  1. Well, good morning.

  2. It's a real privilege and honor to be here at Christ the King, to be able to preach this

  3. morning.

  4. And it's an honor for a number of reasons.

  5. One is the people, there have been people in this church who have played a big role

  6. in my life and in my wife's life.

  7. So to be here and preach at Christ the King is a privilege for that reason.

  8. And it's also a privilege to come and preach here as the head of school of Kenosha Christian

  9. Academy.

  10. We are so grateful for Christ the King and your support of us, but also of the people

  11. here who are on mission with us.

  12. To be on mission with some of the families here at Christ the King is an honor and a

  13. privilege.

  14. So I appreciate the opportunity to bring God's word to us this morning.

  15. So for the message today, I want to focus on a few stories.

  16. From the world's perspective, it's odd that we're still telling these stories because they

  17. have little to do with what we would see today as important.

  18. The people aren't rich or famous.

  19. They were actually poor.

  20. They lived in small towns and lived ordinary lives when we first meet them.

  21. We know little of their personalities.

  22. And yet these stories are some of the turning points in God's redemptive work in the world.

  23. The story that I'll start with begins in 1 Samuel, where God is establishing his kingdom amongst

  24. the people of Israel.

  25. And when the King of the universe wants to break into this sin-cursed world, when he wants

  26. to reestablish his kingdom and fight the powers of darkness, what does he do?

  27. Who does he use?

  28. What does it look like?

  29. These are some of the questions we'll look at today, and here's how we're going to do it.

  30. We're going to look at these stories like four acts in a play.

  31. So plays have these different acts that move the story along.

  32. And so we'll have four of those this morning.

  33. In the first act, I'll start by telling the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel, starting in chapter

  34. 1 and then chapter 2, which culminates in her prayer of thanksgiving to God.

  35. It's a fascinating prayer because of its beauty and depth, but it's also fascinating because

  36. in this prayer is the unifying thread for the rest of the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, revealing

  37. the DNA of God's kingdom.

  38. So after reading through the prayer, we'll walk through a few of those stories in Samuel

  39. to show how the prayer helps us see the meaning of the book as a whole.

  40. But the DNA of God's kingdom extends beyond the book of Samuel.

  41. It reveals the very nature of God and his people.

  42. And naturally, Hannah's prayer becomes an important passage at another key point in redemptive history.

  43. After we walk through Samuel, we'll turn to the act 2 in the play, where there's another turning

  44. point in redemptive history that draws from Hannah's prayer.

  45. So we'll find this act 2 in the book of Luke and act 3 in the book of Acts.

  46. These books are the continuation, the drawing out of the DNA of Hannah's prayer.

  47. And when we look through these passages, here's going to be one repeating thing, one repeating

  48. call on our lives.

  49. As God's kingdom breaks into the world, humble yourselves before God.

  50. So as God's kingdom breaks into the world, humble yourselves before God.

  51. And if we humble ourselves before God and all that that entails, if we trust him to save

  52. us and to work through us, then we'll be a part of this eternal kingdom, God's eternal kingdom

  53. breaking into the world.

  54. So before we get into 1 Samuel here, let me pray for us.

  55. Father, thank you for your word.

  56. Thank you for how it tells this grand and great story about what you are doing in the world

  57. and how you are doing it and how we can be a part of it.

  58. Thank you for this prayer from a young mom that tells us so much about your work and your

  59. kingdom and about how we should respond.

  60. We ask for faith and strength to respond to it rightly.

  61. In Jesus' name, amen.

  62. All right, so you can turn in your Bibles to 1 Samuel.

  63. So the background of 1 Samuel is we, when we get to 1 Samuel 1, we're still at the end

  64. of the period of the judges.

  65. And if you remember anything about the period of the judges, it was a pretty dark time in

  66. Israel's history.

  67. By the time the book of judges ended, we're at one of the most depressing parts in Israel's story.

  68. You have these stories of Israel's incredible brokenness and rebellion against God to the

  69. point that these stories are showing that Israel had become worse than Sodom and Gomorrah.

  70. So the end of the judges leaves us with these refrains that there was no king in Israel and

  71. everyone did what was right in their own eyes.

  72. And it leaves us longing for someone, for some king to come and lead the people of Israel out

  73. of this darkness and under God's good rule.

  74. So that's the time we find ourselves in when we hear the opening words of the book of 1 Samuel

  75. that tells us about a man named Elkanah, a man who has two wives, one named Peninnah and the other

  76. Hannah.

  77. And of these two wives, Peninnah has several children and Hannah has none.

  78. Every year they would go up to the temple in Shiloh and they would offer sacrifices to God

  79. there.

  80. And this was a uniquely hurtful time for Hannah because Peninnah would use this time to rub

  81. in that Hannah had no children.

  82. And in this day, and even more so in that day, to not be able to have children was a really

  83. painful thing.

  84. It could even be a really shameful thing.

  85. And so for Hannah not to have any children was deeply hurtful and discouraging.

  86. And Peninnah would rub it in that she didn't have any children and that Peninnah did.

  87. And so this happened year after year as they went up to the temple.

  88. And one year, Hannah was at the end of herself.

  89. She was distraught.

  90. And so she goes up to the temple and she pours her heart out to God.

  91. And she cries out to him and she asks God to give her a child.

  92. And that if she does get a child, that she will give this child back to the Lord.

  93. And she's crying out in her heart to God.

  94. And she's visibly moved and distraught.

  95. But no words are coming out of her mouth.

  96. And Eli, the priest, sees her in this state and he assumes that she's drunk.

  97. And so he comes up to her and rebukes her and says, what are you doing?

  98. Put your wine away from you.

  99. Enough of this.

  100. And Hannah responds, no, no, no, I'm not drunk.

  101. You see, I'm crying out to God that he would give me a child.

  102. And Eli responds by saying, may God grant you what you asked for.

  103. So Hannah leaves and true to Eli's word, Hannah becomes pregnant.

  104. She gives birth to a child.

  105. They name him Samuel.

  106. And after Samuel's weaned, true to Hannah's word, they take him back to the temple.

  107. And leave him to be in service to God for the rest of his life.

  108. And as they go up to the temple and worship God there,

  109. Hannah breaks out into a prayer of thanksgiving to God.

  110. And this prayer of thanksgiving to God, as we'll see,

  111. sets the trajectory for the rest of the book and actually for the rest of the kingdom of God.

  112. So let's read this prayer together.

  113. It starts in chapter 2, and I'll read verses 1 through 11.

  114. And Hannah prayed and said, my heart exalts in the Lord.

  115. My horn is exalted in the Lord.

  116. My mouth derides my enemies because I rejoice in your salvation.

  117. There is none holy like the Lord, for there is none besides you.

  118. There is no rock like our God.

  119. Talk no more so very proudly.

  120. Let not arrogance come from your mouth.

  121. For the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

  122. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength.

  123. Those who are full have hired themselves out for bread.

  124. But those who are hungry have ceased to hunger.

  125. The barren has born seven, but she who has many children is forlorn.

  126. The Lord kills and brings to life.

  127. He brings down to Sheol and rises up and raises up.

  128. The Lord makes poor and makes rich.

  129. He brings low and he exalts.

  130. He raises up the poor from the dust.

  131. He lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor.

  132. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world.

  133. He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness.

  134. For not by might shall a man prevail.

  135. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces.

  136. Against them he will thunder in heaven.

  137. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.

  138. He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.

  139. Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, and the boy was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest.

  140. So this passage would certainly warrant extended exposition for an entire sermon.

  141. But what I want to do here is just draw out a few pieces of this prayer,

  142. and then show how they're traced out through the rest of the book of Samuel.

  143. So notice one of the main things here is that God is sovereign.

  144. This is all over this prayer.

  145. He talks about how God is the one who breaks the bows of the mighty.

  146. He binds, the feeble bind on strength.

  147. Those who are full have hired themselves out for bread,

  148. but those who are hungry have ceased to hunger.

  149. So there's, God is the one doing all of this.

  150. Throughout each of these verses, you can see how God's strength, his power,

  151. his ability to do any work in the world, that God has that power.

  152. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.

  153. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces.

  154. We'll see this theme throughout, that God is strong and mighty,

  155. and he can do as he pleases.

  156. We also see that the God raises up the humble,

  157. and he casts down the proud.

  158. So you see how there's this reference kind of to Peninnah and Hannah and their situation,

  159. that those who are full have hired themselves out for bread,

  160. but those who are hungry have ceased to hunger.

  161. The barren has born seven, but she who has many children is forlorn.

  162. So there's this reversal of how things were.

  163. Those who had a lot now find themselves with little.

  164. Those who were strong and mighty are brought down.

  165. Those who were poor, God makes rich.

  166. God brings low when he pleases and he exalts.

  167. And so the proper posture of God's people is to humble ourselves before him.

  168. It's to recognize that we bring to God nothing,

  169. that we don't go our own way, but submit to God and his words.

  170. And then you see, so you see God is sovereign.

  171. You see how he raises up the humble.

  172. And then you see how he's going to raise up a king.

  173. You see that in verse 10,

  174. that he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.

  175. And so through the book of Samuel,

  176. we'll see this continuing on,

  177. how God is going to raise up a king to rule over his people.

  178. So with that, what I want to do now

  179. is to take some stops throughout the book of Samuel

  180. to show how some of the individual stories

  181. and the details of this story

  182. are drawing out the threads from this prayer.

  183. So to start, we'll go to 1 Samuel chapter 3.

    1 Samuel 3 chapter mention

  184. So Samuel is a young boy ministering to the temple.

  185. And in the temple, you have Eli the priest

  186. and his sons Hophni and Phinehas.

  187. And these are some of the most powerful people

  188. in the nation of Israel.

  189. This is the priest and his sons ministering in the temple.

  190. They have so much authority and responsibility.

  191. And we see that the sons in particular,

  192. Hophni and Phinehas, are abusing this authority.

  193. They are using it to get rich,

  194. to fill their stomachs.

  195. They're using it to indulge in sexual immorality.

  196. And so, as we saw in Hannah's prayer,

  197. that's not what God expects of his people.

  198. So we have this story

  199. of God bringing a word of judgment

  200. to these powerful people.

  201. Samuel, and who does he use but a little boy?

  202. You might know this story.

  203. Samuel is sleeping, and he hears this voice of Samuel.

  204. Samuel.

  205. So he runs over to Eli,

  206. thinking that Eli was calling him.

  207. But Eli tells him to go back to sleep.

  208. And this happens a few times.

  209. And Eli realizes it was probably a message from the Lord.

  210. And so Samuel goes back the next time

  211. and hears God's voice.

  212. And God tells this little boy

  213. that he was going to judge Eli and his family.

  214. And so Eli ends up getting this message

  215. of judgment on him and his family

  216. from a little boy.

  217. God raises up the humble,

  218. and he casts down the proud.

  219. So that's one of those stories.

  220. Let's take a stop at another one of these stories.

  221. I'll just give an overview of the story of Saul here.

  222. So Israel is in a place

  223. where they don't yet have a kingdom.

  224. They're this large family group of people

  225. under Moses' law,

  226. but they don't yet have an established kingdom.

  227. And they look out, and they see the world,

  228. and they see the world have these impressive kings.

  229. These kings who rule over them,

  230. who lead them in battle.

  231. And Israel sees these other nations,

  232. and they say,

  233. we want to be like them.

  234. We want kings like them.

  235. They think,

  236. they're thinking like the world thinks.

  237. They think that power and status

  238. is what's important.

  239. And so God, to start,

  240. gives them what they want.

  241. He gives them a strong

  242. and good-looking king

  243. who can lead the people in battle.

  244. And you see,

  245. Saul has military victory after victory.

  246. He's conquering Israel's enemies.

  247. He's doing everything

  248. that a world might want in a king,

  249. except he's doing it for himself.

  250. He's doing it to grow his own power,

  251. to grow his own kingdom.

  252. And God,

  253. even though Saul was so powerful and strong,

  254. he was no match for God.

  255. That God is sovereign,

  256. and so God decides

  257. that he's going to cast Saul down.

  258. He gives a word of judgment to him

  259. because Saul was proud,

  260. and so God casts him down

  261. and said that he's going to reject Saul

  262. and his family.

  263. And that leaves them in need

  264. of another king,

  265. and that takes us

  266. to the story of Samuel

  267. going to Bethlehem

  268. to find a new king.

  269. Bethlehem wasn't the first place

  270. that you would think

  271. that he would go

  272. to find a king,

  273. but he does.

  274. He knocks on the door of Jesse.

  275. Jesse has eight sons,

  276. and he goes into Jesse's house,

  277. and Jesse brings before him

  278. his oldest son,

  279. and the oldest son

  280. is what you would think of

  281. as a king.

  282. He was good-looking.

  283. He was tall and strong,

  284. and Samuel thinks,

  285. surely this man

  286. should be the next king of Israel,

  287. and God tells,

  288. do you remember what God tells him?

  289. Like,

  290. man looks on the outward appearance,

  291. but God looks on the heart.

  292. And so,

  293. Jesse brings out his next son

  294. and his next one,

  295. and God says,

  296. no, no, no,

  297. and he says no

  298. to all seven of his sons,

  299. and Samuel says,

  300. is there any more?

  301. And Jesse says,

  302. well, there's one more,

  303. but we didn't invite him

  304. because he's the youngest,

  305. and he's out watching the sheep.

  306. So they bring in David,

  307. the youngest son,

  308. smaller than any of his brothers,

  309. still young,

  310. and God tells him,

  311. this is the one.

  312. Like, this is who I want

  313. to be king of Israel.

  314. You see,

  315. God raises up the humble,

  316. and he casts down the proud,

  317. because we see David's heart

  318. for the Lord,

  319. that he didn't have,

  320. at that time,

  321. the outward appearance

  322. that would have marked him

  323. as a king,

  324. but his heart was devoted to God,

  325. and that's what God wanted.

  326. That's what God cared about

  327. in a king.

  328. And so,

  329. in the next story,

  330. we get the story

  331. of David and Goliath.

  332. And if you read the details

  333. of this story,

  334. you see that

  335. throughout this story,

  336. there's this heightening

  337. of the different power dynamics,

  338. of status and significance,

  339. of showing Goliath on one hand,

  340. the mighty and strong Goliath,

  341. and the details of the text

  342. show his strength and his size.

  343. And then we see how Israel cowers

  344. before Goliath

  345. as he issues this challenge

  346. to the army of Israel.

  347. Israel.

  348. So as they're out

  349. waiting

  350. across from the Philistines,

  351. David's brothers

  352. were part of the Israelite army.

  353. And so one day,

  354. David's father

  355. tells David

  356. to come in

  357. from watching the sheep

  358. and to go out

  359. and give his brothers

  360. some food.

  361. And as he sends

  362. his brothers out with food,

  363. notice he also sends them,

  364. he sends David out

  365. with some cheese

  366. for the commander

  367. of their thousand.

  368. So again,

  369. these details show

  370. he wants to schmooze

  371. the important people

  372. in the army.

  373. So you have

  374. the commander

  375. of the thousands,

  376. you have Saul,

  377. you have David's

  378. strapping brothers,

  379. and then you have David,

  380. this boy,

  381. coming in

  382. and he starts

  383. to hear

  384. these rumblings

  385. of what's going on

  386. of this mighty Goliath

  387. defying the living God

  388. and he gets upset.

  389. He gets worked up

  390. and he says,

  391. well,

  392. I can take him.

  393. And his brother,

  394. do you remember

  395. his brother's response

  396. of saying,

  397. what are you doing here?

  398. Like,

  399. who's watching

  400. those few sheep?

  401. Just doing everything

  402. he can

  403. to contrast

  404. the status

  405. and power

  406. of themselves

  407. and of Goliath

  408. with David.

  409. But David

  410. is insistent

  411. that he knew God,

  412. he knew him so well,

  413. and he also knew

  414. God's promise to him.

  415. Because remember,

  416. Samuel anointed

  417. David

  418. as the next king

  419. of Israel,

  420. and David knew

  421. that God

  422. would keep his promise.

  423. So David

  424. works his way

  425. up to the king,

  426. Saul,

  427. and says that

  428. he wants to fight Goliath.

  429. So Saul,

  430. at first,

  431. sends him out

  432. with his armor,

  433. which David

  434. can barely move in.

  435. So David says,

  436. I'm just going to,

  437. no,

  438. I'm just going to go out

  439. with my sling

  440. and these rocks.

  441. And David does.

  442. He goes out

  443. to the battlefield,

  444. this boy

  445. with no armor,

  446. a sling in his hand

  447. against this giant warrior

  448. with this incredible armor,

  449. and he gives this speech

  450. to Goliath

  451. that you come to me

  452. with a spear

  453. and a sword,

  454. but I come to you

  455. in the name of the Lord.

  456. Do you remember

  457. that line from Hannah

  458. for not by might,

  459. not in might

  460. does the Lord

  461. raise up?

  462. That God is the one

  463. who doesn't need might

  464. to win a battle.

  465. So David takes out

  466. his sling with a rock,

  467. he slings it around,

  468. throws the rock

  469. through the air,

  470. and strikes Goliath

  471. in the forehead

  472. and kills

  473. the mighty Goliath.

  474. God raises up

  475. the humble

  476. and he casts down

  477. the proud.

  478. So do you see this?

  479. How Hannah's prayer

  480. operates as this thread

  481. that's woven

  482. through the book of Samuel?

  483. How it's becoming

  484. the DNA

  485. of God's kingdom

  486. and what God's people

  487. should be?

  488. Hannah gives us

  489. the keys

  490. to understand

  491. these stories.

  492. And if you read through

  493. from 1 Samuel 1

  494. through the end

  495. of the book,

  496. you'll see how

  497. it goes through

  498. the entire book.

  499. You'll see how

  500. God rejects Saul

  501. and casts him down

  502. because of his pride

  503. and he raises up

  504. the humble David

  505. who trusts in him.

  506. And as you read on though,

  507. you'll see that

  508. David becomes proud too.

  509. He ends up committing

  510. adultery and murder.

  511. He issues the census

  512. and God casts down

  513. even David.

  514. But God made this promise

  515. that he would use

  516. David's house,

  517. that he would use

  518. the house of David

  519. to restore his kingdom

  520. and his world

  521. in the world.

  522. So act,

  523. this first act

  524. comes to an end.

  525. We get to the end

  526. of Samuel

  527. and see the kingdom

  528. being passed on.

  529. We see that David

  530. wasn't the savior

  531. that they had hoped for

  532. and neither were his children.

  533. We're left longing

  534. for one of David's sons

  535. to restore his throne

  536. and to restore

  537. God's proper rule

  538. which brings us

  539. to Acts 2.

  540. Around a thousand years later,

  541. Israel was languishing.

  542. They had returned

  543. from exile,

  544. but God

  545. was silent.

  546. Israel was under

  547. Roman rule.

  548. A king from David's line

  549. was nowhere to be found.

  550. People of all different

  551. kinds

  552. were speculating

  553. about how God

  554. would intervene,

  555. how God would

  556. restore his people.

  557. So how would the great

  558. living God

  559. return to establish

  560. his kingdom?

  561. C.S. Lewis describes

  562. the moment this way.

  563. The whole thing

  564. narrows and narrows

  565. until at last

  566. it comes down

  567. to a little point,

  568. small as the point

  569. of a spear,

  570. a Jewish girl

  571. at her prayers.

  572. That's right.

  573. The grand story

  574. of redemption

  575. zooms in

  576. on an engaged

  577. Jewish girl

  578. from no special family.

  579. An angel appears

  580. to her

  581. and tells her

  582. that she will give birth

  583. to the king

  584. who will sit

  585. on David's throne

  586. forever.

  587. The story continues

  588. with Mary

  589. visiting her cousin

  590. Elizabeth,

  591. a previously

  592. barren older woman,

  593. remember Hannah,

  594. who is also expecting.

  595. Mary greets her cousin

  596. and then sings

  597. a song of praise

  598. to God.

  599. Here are a few lines

  600. from that,

  601. from Luke 1,

  602. 51 through 53.

  603. He has shown strength

  604. with his arms.

  605. He has scattered

  606. the proud

  607. in their thoughts

  608. of their hearts.

  609. He has brought down

  610. the mighty

  611. from their thrones

  612. and exalted

  613. those of humble estate.

  614. He has filled

  615. the hungry

  616. with good things

  617. and the rich

  618. he has sent away empty.

  619. Does that sound familiar?

  620. It's almost a,

  621. part of that,

  622. it's almost a quotation

  623. from Hannah's prayer

  624. in 1 Samuel 2.

  625. This new work

  626. happening in God's kingdom

  627. is following

  628. the same storyline

  629. at the beginning

  630. of Israel's kingdom

  631. in the book of Samuel.

  632. A barren woman

  633. giving birth.

  634. God raising up

  635. the most unlikely people.

  636. A song of praise

  637. from the mother

  638. singing about God's work

  639. to raise the humble.

  640. The establishment

  641. of a new king.

  642. The weaving of these things

  643. throughout the rest

  644. of the book.

  645. It's just like before.

  646. It seems as though

  647. God had picked

  648. the least likely people

  649. to be a part

  650. of this new turn

  651. in his redemptive work.

  652. But if you know

  653. the DNA of God's kingdom

  654. from Hannah's prayer,

  655. then it's not

  656. that all unlikely.

  657. God had been working

  658. this way all along.

  659. Using the humble,

  660. the people no one else

  661. expected.

  662. Those who trusted

  663. in him

  664. and not in themselves.

  665. This DNA,

  666. as we see it worked out

  667. in the rest

  668. of the book of Luke,

  669. shows up most clearly

  670. in the Davidic king,

  671. Jesus himself.

  672. So as Israel is charged

  673. with,

  674. in that time,

  675. Israel has so many

  676. expectations of a Messiah.

  677. Of what this person

  678. will look like.

  679. And as that's happening,

  680. the Messiah slips in

  681. without almost anyone noticing.

  682. He's born in a barn

  683. laid to sleep

  684. in a freeing trough.

  685. He grows up

  686. in the backwoods town

  687. of Nazareth.

  688. And as the book

  689. of Luke unfolds,

  690. we see

  691. the resemblance,

  692. we see the resemblance

  693. to Samuel continue.

  694. Just like Hannah's prayer

  695. presents the theme

  696. of the rest

  697. of the book of Samuel,

  698. Mary's prayer

  699. sets the theme,

  700. the major themes

  701. of Luke

  702. and Acts.

  703. So this theme

  704. introduced by Hannah,

  705. that God raises up

  706. the humble

  707. and casts down the proud,

  708. shows up everywhere

  709. in the book of Luke.

  710. Jesus ministers

  711. to the poor,

  712. the sinners,

  713. the blind,

  714. the outcast.

  715. He proclaims good news

  716. to them,

  717. that God's reign

  718. is coming.

  719. Characters like

  720. Zacchaeus,

  721. Lazarus,

  722. and the rich man,

  723. the publican,

  724. and the Pharisee

  725. who pray in the temple,

  726. the prodigal son,

  727. those stories show up

  728. only in the book of Luke.

  729. And in Luke's gospel,

  730. more than any other,

  731. we hear Jesus calling

  732. his followers

  733. to minister

  734. to the poor,

  735. the blind,

  736. and the outcasts.

  737. It's continuing

  738. the same message,

  739. the same unfolding DNA

  740. from Hannah's prayer.

  741. And these stories

  742. and these characters

  743. are remarkable.

  744. But it's nothing compared

  745. to how this second act closes.

  746. While most kings

  747. are coronated

  748. in a palace

  749. with a lavish ceremony,

  750. King Jesus is crowned

  751. by dying naked

  752. on a cross,

  753. being tortured

  754. and killed

  755. to save his people

  756. from their sins.

  757. You couldn't imagine

  758. a more humble

  759. and humiliating way

  760. to die.

  761. Jesus embodies

  762. the message,

  763. the cry of Hannah's song

  764. from so long before.

  765. But the story

  766. doesn't end there.

  767. because Jesus

  768. is raised up

  769. by God

  770. from the dead.

  771. And this brings us

  772. to Act 3

  773. in the story.

  774. The risen

  775. King Jesus

  776. ascends into heaven

  777. and he sends

  778. his spirit

  779. to empower the church

  780. to continue

  781. his work.

  782. I know you went

  783. through the book

  784. of Acts last year,

  785. so you probably

  786. remember the many ways

  787. that the church

  788. reflects the practices

  789. of Jesus.

  790. They carry the same

  791. DNA as him,

  792. humble, trusting

  793. in the sovereign God

  794. to bring people

  795. to himself

  796. and to build up

  797. his kingdom.

  798. And so the cast

  799. of the early church

  800. isn't Caiaphas

  801. or Herod

  802. or Nero.

  803. It's fishermen,

  804. slaves,

  805. jailers.

  806. God's people

  807. aren't marked

  808. by a hunger

  809. to pursue fame

  810. or influence

  811. on the world's term.

  812. They're marked

  813. by humility,

  814. care for the poor,

  815. submission to God's word,

  816. preaching of the gospel

  817. just like Hannah

  818. described,

  819. just like Jesus

  820. described.

  821. And as Act 3

  822. continues

  823. or as we move

  824. into application,

  825. Act 3 isn't over.

  826. We don't move on

  827. from Act 3

  828. as we come to today

  829. because as

  830. Christ the King Church,

  831. this is your part

  832. of the story.

  833. This is your act.

  834. The DNA

  835. of God's kingdom

  836. found in Hannah's prayer

  837. is your DNA.

  838. You're trusting

  839. in a sovereign God

  840. who will rescue

  841. the world

  842. through his King Jesus.

  843. The risen Jesus'

  844. spirit lives among you

  845. working to make you

  846. humble and godly

  847. people like Hannah,

  848. like Mary,

  849. like Jesus,

  850. like Peter.

  851. And as we close,

  852. I want to draw out

  853. a few ways

  854. that that looks

  855. for us today,

  856. both as individuals

  857. and as Christ the King Church.

  858. So for us

  859. as individuals,

  860. as we are surrounded

  861. by pictures

  862. of another kingdom,

  863. maybe you're

  864. a high school student

  865. or a middle school student,

  866. and when you're at school,

  867. you feel the need

  868. to fit in.

  869. And you feel the need

  870. to fit in

  871. by being funny

  872. or pretty

  873. or by dressing

  874. in a certain way.

  875. You want to fit in

  876. with the cool kids,

  877. and that's not anything new.

  878. That's what was happening

  879. in Hannah's day.

  880. It's what was happening

  881. in Mary's day.

  882. Or maybe you're

  883. at a job

  884. where all the time

  885. you're watching

  886. as people are jockeying

  887. for attention,

  888. for a raise,

  889. for a new title.

  890. They're schmoozing

  891. the boss,

  892. misrepresenting

  893. their own work

  894. and yours

  895. in order to get ahead.

  896. Well,

  897. you see,

  898. first,

  899. that doesn't work.

  900. To try

  901. and gain

  902. the approval

  903. of others

  904. and get satisfaction

  905. from others,

  906. it doesn't work.

  907. To try and raise

  908. yourself up

  909. like that

  910. doesn't work

  911. because once you

  912. become popular

  913. or rich,

  914. you realize

  915. that it offers

  916. no fulfillment

  917. at all.

  918. That you're left

  919. emptier than

  920. when you started.

  921. Do you remember

  922. those stories

  923. of Eli

  924. and his sons,

  925. of Saul,

  926. of the Pharisees?

  927. God casts them down.

  928. It doesn't work out.

  929. God isn't impressed

  930. with their power

  931. or with their looks

  932. or with their strength.

  933. But know also

  934. how God's ways

  935. lead to life.

  936. Instead of working

  937. to puff up

  938. your own image

  939. or to fit in

  940. with the crowd,

  941. remember that

  942. you're a part

  943. of a kingdom

  944. that follows

  945. a crucified Savior.

  946. One that

  947. looks to serve

  948. people in his interactions

  949. rather than

  950. to be served.

  951. And remember

  952. that following Jesus

  953. means looking different

  954. from other people.

  955. It means

  956. often being unpopular

  957. because we care

  958. about different things.

  959. And remember

  960. that on the other side

  961. of the cross

  962. is resurrection

  963. and life,

  964. eternal life

  965. with Jesus.

  966. That's a word

  967. to individuals.

  968. Now,

  969. a word to

  970. the church

  971. as the whole.

  972. We looked at

  973. the DNA

  974. found in Hannah's prayer

  975. and how it shouldn't

  976. just mark individuals.

  977. It should mark

  978. the people of God

  979. as a whole.

  980. First,

  981. the nation of Israel

  982. and now

  983. in the church.

  984. The first thing

  985. I want to point to you,

  986. point out to you,

  987. and point you to,

  988. as Christ the King Church,

  989. is the glory

  990. of being part

  991. of Hannah's story,

  992. of Jesus' story.

  993. The living God

  994. has chosen the church

  995. as the primary way

  996. to display

  997. his redemptive work

  998. in the world.

  999. As the world

  1000. looks to politics

  1001. and money,

  1002. you know that

  1003. God's redemptive work

  1004. is continuing

  1005. and breaking in

1006. as you love the poor.

  1007. Study and submit

  1008. to God's word,

  1009. deny yourselves,

  1010. and gather regularly

  1011. around Jesus' table

  1012. to remember

  1013. his broken body

  1014. and spilled blood.

  1015. It breaks in

  1016. as you choose

1017. to be humble before God,

  1018. as you seek

1019. to love God and neighbor,

1020. and if you have eyes to see,

  1021. you'll realize

  1022. that's what's going on

  1023. in these things.

1024. And that is far better,

  1025. far more important

  1026. than what's going on

  1027. in Washington

  1028. or Madison

  1029. or Hollywood.

  1030. God's work

  1031. was through

  1032. a dejected,

  1033. barren woman,

  1034. a shepherd boy,

  1035. a teenage girl,

  1036. a crucified Messiah.

1037. It can break in here

  1038. in this place

  1039. if you seek

  1040. his kingdom

  1041. above earthly values.

  1042. But there is still

  1043. a draw for us,

  1044. even as God's people,

1045. to live by the rules

  1046. of other kingdoms.

  1047. We can be tempted

  1048. by money

  1049. and influence,

  1050. things that aren't bad

  1051. in themselves,

  1052. but become

1053. the things we trust in.

  1054. we can be tempted

  1055. to place

1056. or we can be tempted

  1057. for our conversations

  1058. to be surrounded

  1059. or centered around

  1060. values that more reflect

  1061. values of the world

  1062. than of God's kingdom,

  1063. where we're trying more

  1064. to impress other people

  1065. and show others

  1066. how important we are,

  1067. where we look

  1068. at outward appearance

  1069. more than the posture

  1070. of the heart.

  1071. But God calls us

  1072. to something different,

  1073. to not look

  1074. on the outward appearance,

  1075. but to look

  1076. on the heart.

  1077. So when someone

1078. comes into Christ the King,

  1079. are they judged more

  1080. by their job

  1081. or social status,

1082. or are they judged more

  1083. by their sensed need

  1084. for a savior?

  1085. One other note here

  1086. of application

1087. for us as a church.

  1088. There is a draw

  1089. in the world

  1090. to think that politics

1091. is the most important thing,

  1092. that that is

  1093. the most important activity

  1094. of the church.

  1095. But I think

  1096. a clear point

  1097. from Samuel and Luke

1098. is that what's going on here

  1099. in the church,

  1100. in the local church,

  1101. is far more important

  1102. than politics.

  1103. There's an interesting passage

  1104. in Luke chapter 3

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  1105. where Luke mentions

  1106. the most important people

  1107. in the world.

  1108. Remember, politics

  1109. were really important

  1110. in Jesus' day too.

  1111. They were really important.

  1112. It was what people

  1113. were talking about.

1114. And so in Luke chapter 3,

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  1115. it mentions them all.

  1116. Or the most important,

  1117. Caesar.

  1118. It mentions Herod

  1119. and Pilate.

  1120. But it mentions them

  1121. almost in order

  1122. to forget them.

  1123. It mentions them

  1124. and then goes on

  1125. to talk about

  1126. the Simeons

  1127. and the shepherds

  1128. and the fishermen

  1129. and John the Baptist.

  1130. It says,

  1131. yeah, there's Caesar

  1132. and, by the way,

  1133. there's Caesar

  1134. and Herod and Pilate.

1135. Let's get to the real story.

1136. Let's get to the most important

  1137. part of the story.

  1138. And it's the part

  1139. of the story

  1140. that's talking about

  1141. these humble people

  1142. who God is using

  1143. to establish

  1144. His kingdom

  1145. in the world.

1146. And that's for us too.

  1147. That though politics

1148. can be an important way

  1149. to love our neighbor

  1150. and to do good,

1151. it is not more important.

  1152. It is not preeminent

1153. over what is going on

  1154. in the life

  1155. of the local church

1156. as we love each other

1157. and submit to God's word,

1158. as we preach the gospel,

1159. as we do acts of love

  1160. in our city.

  1161. That is more important.

  1162. That's where God

  1163. is most glorified.

  1164. Christ the King,

  1165. we're a part of God's kingdom,

  1166. God's story.

  1167. And in a world

  1168. dominated by appearance,

  1169. status,

  1170. money, and power,

  1171. we're a people

  1172. pursuing humility,

  1173. submitting to God's word.

  1174. And as the church

  1175. in 2023,

  1176. we're still living

  1177. in this third act

  1178. of the story.

  1179. There's a fourth act

  1180. to come.

  1181. One day,

  1182. the trumpet will sound

  1183. and Jesus will return

  1184. to establish His kingdom

  1185. once and for all.

  1186. Hannah's prayer says

  1187. that God will exalt

1188. the horn of His anointed.

  1189. And on that day,

  1190. with the world

  1191. made right again,

  1192. with death defeated,

1193. with every tear wiped away,

  1194. every knee will bow

  1195. and worship the King

  1196. who became obedient

  1197. to death,

  1198. even the death

  1199. on a cross.

  1200. Let's pray together.

  1201. Father,

  1202. we are so grateful

  1203. to You

  1204. for how You are

  1205. working in the world.

  1206. You don't want

1207. what we bring to the table,

  1208. but You want us

  1209. to humble ourselves

  1210. before You.

1211. So may we do that.

  1212. May we live

  1213. and dwell

  1214. this story

  1215. of Hannah's prayer,

  1216. of David,

  1217. of Mary,

  1218. of Jesus.

  1219. And may we long

  1220. for the day

  1221. when You will come

  1222. and establish

  1223. Your kingdom in full.

  1224. In Jesus' name,

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.

  1237. Amen.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. Amen.

  1240. Amen.

  1241. Amen.

  1242. Amen.

  1243. Amen.

  1244. Amen.
