  1. All right.

  2. Well, it's great to be back in this pulpit.

  3. And I just want to thank you once again for the sabbatical that you so graciously gave Jenny and me and our family.

  4. I come back refreshed and eager to get back into the harness.

  5. And it was a refreshing time.

  6. But come on, you tell me.

  7. Sometimes you just need to be refreshed.

  8. Do I have an amen?

  9. If you're married, sometimes your marriage needs a refresher.

  10. John Tippman, who opened us and is going to close to seeing his wife, Terry.

  11. They're part of a ministry called Family Life.

  12. And they organize conferences called Weekend to Remembers.

  13. And what they're designed to do is bring couples and bring God's word to bear on marriage.

  14. And it's designed to refresh couples in God's good design of marriage.

  15. Sometimes you just need a refresher for your marriage.

  16. Sometimes you need a refresher for your finances.

  17. You turn to God's word and you see what God's word has to say about financial stewardship so that you can be refreshed and walking by God's word.

  18. Jenny and I are refreshing our finances right now.

  19. And this morning, we're going to look to God's word, the first three chapters of the book of Romans, to be refreshed in the gospel.

  20. One of the effects I'm praying for, as we are reminded of the Christian gospel, is that you will walk away this morning, not just refreshed, but rejoicing.

  21. Rejoicing in what God has done through Jesus Christ to rescue you.

  22. And so think of this sermon as a flyover of the first three chapters of Romans.

  23. Of course, I'm not going to get into every detail.

  24. But there's three things I want you to see, three points.

  25. The gospel defined.

  26. And our problem elaborated in we have got a terrible unrighteousness problem.

  27. And then the gospel applied.

  28. And it's there where I'm hoping you're going to be like, what an amazing God we have.

  29. So, let's look at the gospel defined.

  30. It's Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  31. If you have a pew Bible, it's page 1116, 1116 of your pew Bible.

  32. Well, let's ask this question.

  33. What is this Christian gospel?

  34. I grew up in Connecticut.

  35. I grew up outside of Hartford.

  36. And the immediate neighbors to the south of us were the Freemans.

  37. And the Freemans had moved in from Great Britain.

  38. And it turns out we spoke English.

  39. But they spoke British English.

  40. And the Salvati spoke American English.

  41. And though we used the same English words, there were some very odd, strange moments.

  42. For example, they called a truck a lorry.

  43. And so, for some time, you can imagine.

  44. Are they talking about a woman named Lori who's as big as a truck?

  45. They called the trunk of a car a boot.

  46. And so, Mrs. Freeman would ask her sons, boys, go get the groceries out of the boot.

  47. And I was kind of like, what is she talking about?

  48. They call elevators lifts.

  49. If you're familiar with weightlifting, we're not talking about a clean and jerk lift.

  50. We're talking about something that brings you up into the floors of a multi-story building.

  51. The point is, it's possible to use the same English word, but have two different meanings.

  52. And it creates confusion.

  53. Therefore, in order to unite together as a church, let's look at what Romans 1 has to say about the gospel.

  54. We need to be clear on what the Bible means by the gospel.

  55. It's that not only we can unite as a church around what the Bible means by the gospel, but unite in what God has done through the gospel.

  56. So there are two essential elements of the Christian gospel from Romans 1.

  57. It's historic.

  58. We see that in chapter 1, verses 1 through 4.

  59. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle God, set apart for the gospel of God,

  60. which he promised beforehand through his prophets and the holy scriptures,

  61. concerning his son, who is descended from David according to the flesh,

  62. and it was declared to be the son of God in power according to the spirit of holiness,

  63. by his resurrection from the dead.

  64. Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  65. Just a couple things I want to point out.

  66. That word gospel, when used in antiquity, first century, when Paul was writing,

  67. it was not a religious word.

  68. It just simply meant an announcement of something good and important.

  69. So let's say like the 11th legion of the Roman military,

  70. they had stormed some kind of beach in northern Africa, and they won a victory.

  71. They would send someone to Rome with the good news, the gospel that they won.

  72. And what we see here in Romans 1, 1,

  73. we see set apart for the gospel, the good news of God.

  74. Here's how you need to think about that.

  75. This is God's announcement to humanity of something that he has done in space and time

  76. that is good and important.

  77. The gospel is God's announcement.

  78. It's historic.

  79. It happened in time and space.

  80. And it has to do with verse 3 concerning his son, Jesus Christ.

  81. Whatever this good news is about, whatever happened, is about Jesus.

  82. And in verse 4, we see the actual event.

  83. By his resurrection from the dead.

  84. The good news, the historic good news of the Christian gospel is God's announcement that Jesus Christ's death and resurrection

  85. accomplish something that is absolutely unbelievable.

  86. Actually, it's very believable.

  87. But it is amazing.

  88. Matt Chandler, who wrote the book, The Explicit Gospel, talks about describing the gospel in two ways.

  89. As kind of a close-up, like Christ died for our sins.

  90. Very personal.

  91. It addresses our greatest need now here.

  92. But he also talks about the gospel being spoken of in a panorama.

  93. That this is the good news for all time.

  94. It's a plan for the fullness of time.

  95. Both are true.

  96. This good news, this event that God wants all the world to know,

  97. has everything to do with your greatest needs individually,

  98. and it's got everything to do with the history of mankind.

  99. So the first element is that the gospel is historic.

  100. We're talking about a specific time and place that Jesus Christ died and was raised.

  101. It either happened or it didn't.

  102. Second, the gospel is effectual.

  103. It's powerful.

  104. Look at verses 16 and 17.

  105. Many of you have memorized verse 16.

  106. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

  107. To the Jew first and also to the Greek, for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith.

  108. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  109. Habakkuk 2.4.

  110. The gospel, this historic event, Christ's death and resurrection, it gets something done.

  111. It's powerful.

  112. Look at verse 16.

  113. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it, the gospel, the death and resurrection,

  114. the gospel, the resurrection of Jesus is the power of God for salvation.

  115. That historic event of Christ's death and resurrection is God's power getting something done.

  116. Our salvation.

  117. Our rescue.

  118. And whatever we needed to be rescued from, it required God's power to rescue us.

  119. We can't rescue ourselves.

  120. We can't save ourselves from this predicament that we're in.

  121. Salvation only comes from something that God has powerfully done.

  122. And God has made that known to us.

  123. Verse 16, it's for everyone who believes.

  124. For the Jew first and also the Greek.

  125. For the Jewish mind, Paul who wrote this was a Jew.

  126. And for the Jewish mind, all of humanity is divided into two camps.

  127. You're a Jew or you're not a Jew.

  128. And what we're hearing here is this gospel announcement that God is making to all of humanity.

  129. He is making to both Jews and non-Jews.

  130. To all who believe.

  131. And did you notice verse 17?

  132. This gospel, it trades in righteousness.

  133. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed.

  134. In it, the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith.

  135. Righteousness is addressing God's upright moral character and God's upright moral activity.

  136. He is perfect in all that He does.

  137. And this gospel that God announces having to do with the death and resurrection of Jesus is a manifestation of His righteousness.

  138. And that's raising our biggest problem.

  139. Our unrighteousness.

  140. So just let's make sure we're on the same page here.

  141. The Christian gospel, biblically defined, is historic and powerful.

  142. It's God's power to rescue us from our unrighteousness.

  143. If our greatest problem is the unrighteousness of man,

  144. God's solution is the righteousness of God.

  145. Through the gospel.

  146. Okay, we've covered that ground.

  147. Let's move on to our problem elaborated.

  148. In chapter 1, verses 18 through chapter 3, verse 20,

  149. Paul exposes and elaborates on our terrible unrighteousness problem.

  150. He divides all humanity into two types of sinners.

  151. There are the unrighteous hedonists,

  152. and there are the unrighteous moralists.

  153. And in 1, verses 18 through 32,

  154. it's an elaboration on the unrighteous hedonist.

  155. Now, a hedonist is someone who casts off all rules and regulations

  156. in order for him or her to pursue pleasure,

  157. illicit pleasure.

  158. Nothing will stop them from it.

  159. They're like, all of God's good rules,

  160. get out of my way,

  161. I'm going to live,

  162. and I'm going to do and get what I want.

  163. Listen to Romans chapter 118.

  164. I'll read through 20.

  165. Now, these hedonists are most likely Gentiles,

  166. and Gentiles of this day were probably people

  167. who didn't have a Bible in their house.

  168. But what Paul is saying here,

  169. in verses 18 through 20,

  170. is that if you're an unrighteous hedonist

  171. without a Bible in your house,

  172. you are still without excuse

  173. before of the living God.

  174. You are actually under His wrath,

  175. for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  176. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

  177. Now, you may be saying,

  178. well, that doesn't sound fair.

  179. Well, in verse 20, we are told it is fair.

  180. For His invisible attributes,

  181. namely His eternal power and divine nature,

  182. have been clearly perceived

  183. ever since the creation of the world

  184. and the things that have been made.

  185. So they're without excuse.

  186. They might not have a Bible,

  187. but they have all of creation.

  188. God revealing His power

  189. and bringing this all in from nothing.

  190. And His goodness,

  191. He provides for all people on the earth.

  192. And so what's being said here is

  193. God has sufficiently revealed Himself

  194. to all people on the planet

  195. so that there's no hedonist

  196. who doesn't have a Bible in their house

  197. who can say they're without excuse.

  198. In fact, they're under God's wrath.

  199. They suppress the truth about God and His ways.

  200. Look at verses 21 through 23.

  201. For although they knew God,

  202. they did not honor Him as God

  203. or give thanks to Him,

  204. but they became futile in their thinking.

  205. And their foolish hearts were darkened.

  206. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.

  207. Listen to verse 23.

  208. And exchanged the glory of the immortal God

  209. for images resembling mortal man and birds

  210. and animals and creeping things.

  211. Do you know what is at the heart of hedonism?

  212. Idolatry.

  213. It's an exchange.

  214. It's not just a rejection of God.

  215. It's a swapping out of God.

  216. It's an exchange.

  217. Exchanging the one true glorious God

  218. for created things.

  219. And that's why they are without excuse

  220. under God's wrath.

  221. And then in verses 24 through 32,

  222. we see this repeated phrase,

  223. God gave them up.

  224. You see it in verse 24.

  225. Therefore, God gave them up.

  226. Verse 26.

  227. For this reason, God gave them up.

  228. In verse 28.

  229. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God,

  230. God gave them up.

  231. Have you ever been wondering

  232. why our culture in America right now

  233. seems to be just spinning downwards?

  234. If you've been around the block,

  235. maybe 20, 30 years,

  236. you're kind of like,

  237. what is going on with our culture?

  238. Romans 1.

  239. Our culture is being handed over by God

  240. to their sinful desires.

  241. It's a judgment.

  242. And we're living in the middle of it.

  243. This giving up language

  244. is a kind of judgment.

  245. That's what's happening in our culture.

  246. In verse 24, we read,

  247. therefore God gave them up

  248. in the lusts of their heart

  249. to impurity,

  250. to the dishonoring of their bodies

  251. among themselves.

  252. Impurity is probably

  253. referenced to some kind of sexual sin.

  254. but this dishonoring of their bodies.

  255. Of having,

  256. giving their bodies the things

  257. that they shouldn't be doing.

  258. It's where we're living right now.

  259. God has designed our bodies

  260. very specifically.

  261. Biblically speaking,

  262. the Bible approaches gender

  263. by defining gender biologically.

  264. Whether you have a Y chromosome or not.

  265. We're living in a culture

  266. in which our culture is adrift.

  267. And instead of having

  268. a biologically informed definition of gender,

  269. we have a psychologically informed

  270. definition of gender.

  271. It's how you feel.

  272. To match your body

  273. to how you feel.

  274. And now we live in a time,

  275. it's unprecedented,

  276. now people

  277. can have surgery

  278. or have some kind of

  279. hormonal treatment

  280. that changes their body

  281. to match their feelings.

  282. Claiming to be wise,

  283. they've become fools.

  284. At the heart of gender dysphoria,

  285. at the heart of transgenderism,

  286. there's an idolatry.

  287. An exchanging of God

  288. for a lie.

  289. That's where we're living.

  290. We're living in Romans 1 again.

  291. In 26 and 27,

  292. for this reason,

  293. God gave them up

  294. to dishonorable passions.

  295. And then he goes into,

  296. for their women

  297. exchanged natural relations

  298. for those that are not

  299. contrary to nature.

  300. And the men likewise

  301. gave up natural relations

  302. with women

  303. and were consumed

  304. with passion.

  305. The natural relations

  306. are simply God's good design

  307. of a man and a woman

  308. in physical union

  309. in the context of marriage.

  310. One chromosomal man,

  311. husband,

  312. married to one chromosomal woman,

  313. wife,

  314. uniting together physically

  315. till death do they part

  316. under God's purview.

  317. And what we see here

  318. is when you exchange God

  319. for a lie,

  320. it's going to show up

  321. in your practice of sexuality

  322. in your culture.

  323. What becomes normal?

  324. Homosexuality

  325. is categorically sinful,

  326. and unrighteous

  327. in God's eyes.

  328. And at the heart of it

  329. is idolatry.

  330. Are we sympathetic

  331. in seeking to care

  332. for our friends and family

  333. who are struggling

  334. with homosexuality

  335. or transgenderism?

  336. Yes, of course.

  337. But at the root of it,

  338. it's idolatry.

  339. There's a man,

  340. his name is Christopher Yon.

  341. He's a brother in Christ

  342. who is entrenched

  343. in the homosexual lifestyle.

  344. God awakened him,

  345. radically transformed him.

  346. Eventually,

  347. he became a professor

  348. down at Moody Bible Institute.

  349. And now he has a ministry

  350. based out of California.

  351. I would encourage you,

  352. if you want to read

  353. some helpful material

  354. on what the Bible

  355. has to say about homosexuality,

  356. read Christopher Yon.

  357. Y-U-A-N.

  358. He has a very helpful perspective.

  359. In fact, he will say,

  360. what a homosexual needs

  361. is not to be made straight.

  362. They need to hear the gospel

  363. to address their heart idolatry.

  364. In verses 28 through 32,

  365. we have the third God gave them up,

  366. and it's to a debased mind.

  367. Do you know what a debased mind is?

  368. Think of it this way.

  369. If someone doesn't know God,

  370. if they have no fear of God

  371. before their eyes,

  372. they are still going to think

  373. and they're going to still

  374. build their life.

  375. But what they will think about

  376. and build their life on

  377. has no God foundation of it.

  378. It's off the foundation.

  379. It's debased.

  380. Do you see?

  381. Proverbs 1-7 says,

  382. the fear of the Lord

  383. is the beginning of knowledge.

  384. Proverbs 9-10 says,

  385. the fear of the Lord

  386. is the beginning of wisdom.

  387. We build our lives

  388. on who God is

  389. and what He says in His Word.

  390. That's knowledge and wisdom.

  391. And if that's not there,

  392. you're building on the sand.

  393. And what we see

  394. in verses 29 through 31

  395. is quite a sin list.

  396. Let me read it.

  397. They were filled with

  398. all manner of unrighteousness.

  399. These hedonists.

  400. Evil, covetousness, malice.

  401. They are full of envy,

  402. murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness.

  403. They are gossip, slanderers,

  404. haters of God,

  405. insolent, haughty, boastful,

  406. inventors of evil,

  407. disobedient to parents,

  408. foolish, faithless,

  409. heartless, ruthless.

  410. Do you see it in you?

  411. Do you see your inner hedonist?

  412. Maybe you're not struggling

  413. with transgenderism.

  414. Have you ever coveted

  415. someone else's body?

  416. Do you gossip?

  417. Do you gossip?

  418. Do you slander?

  419. Boy,

  420. we've got all,

  421. all of us have got

  422. some of this in us.

  423. Be honest with yourself.

  424. As you come to God's word,

  425. be asking the question,

  426. hey,

  427. what's wrong with this guy?

  428. No, no, no.

  429. It starts with you.

  430. It starts with me.

  431. Verse 32,

  432. though they know

  433. God's righteous decree,

  434. these unrighteous hedonists,

  435. they know down deep

  436. God's righteous decree

  437. that those who practice

  438. such things deserve to die.

  439. They not only do them,

  440. but give approval

  441. to those who practice them.

  442. And in our culture right now,

  443. not just approval,

  444. we make laws

  445. saying that it's okay.

  446. Corporate policy

  447. these are the times

  448. we live in.

  449. At the heart of it all

  450. is idolatry.

  451. Exchanging the truth

  452. of God for a lie,

  453. claiming to be wise,

  454. they become fools.

  455. Our culture,

  456. brothers and sisters,

  457. God is handing over.

  458. That's where we find ourselves.

  459. Can I just remind you

  460. of something?

  461. The Apostle Paul wrote Romans

  462. to Rome

  463. in the Roman Empire

  464. in the first century.

  465. You see,

  466. human history

  467. is a history of God

  468. handing over

  469. culture,

  470. individuals,

  471. over and over again

  472. to their sinful desires.

  473. It even goes back

  474. to judges in Israel.

  475. being handed over

  476. to what they want.

  477. It's a kind of a judgment

  478. and it is the story

  479. of human history.

  480. Not just 21st century America.

  481. Humanity.

  482. Unrighteous before God.

  483. Now, if the problem

  484. is the unrighteousness of man,

  485. then the solution

  486. is the righteousness of God.

  487. And you know what this means?

  488. This announcement

  489. of the gospel

  490. God talked about.

  491. We saw in Romans 1.

  492. This gospel

  493. is for the unrighteous hedonist.

  494. Even though they're

  495. without excuse,

  496. even though they're

  497. under God's wrath,

  498. God says,

  499. here's good news

  500. of what I have done

  501. about your unrighteousness.

  502. Now,

  503. you might be thinking like,

  504. you know what, Paul?

  505. You give it to them.

  506. Give it to them, Paul.

  507. Bring it.

  508. Bring down the hammer

  509. on those hedonists.

  510. But Paul doesn't stop

  511. with the unrighteous hedonist.

  512. There's another type

  513. of sinner

  514. starting in chapter 2,

  515. verse 1,

  516. going through chapter 3,

  517. verse 8,

  518. the unrighteous

  519. moralist.

  520. Where the hedonist

  521. rejects God's law,

  522. the moralist

  523. prides himself

  524. or herself

  525. in keeping God's law.

  526. These moralists,

  527. which in chapter 2,

  528. verse 17,

  529. Paul calls them Jews,

  530. Jews,

  531. it's not too difficult

  532. to imagine

  533. present-day Christians

  534. in this same camp.

  535. The problem

  536. of the moralist,

  537. simply put,

  538. is hypocrisy.

  539. The hedonist

  540. swaps out God

  541. for sin, right?

  542. The moralist

  543. is hypocrisy.

  544. Look at chapter 2,

  545. verse 1 through 3.

  546. Therefore,

  547. you have no excuse,

  548. O man,

  549. every one of you

  550. who judges.

  551. Paul is anticipating

  552. the moralist response.

  553. All these hands over,

  554. handing over,

  555. and the moralist

  556. is saying,

  557. yeah,

  558. you give it to him,

  559. you give it to him.

  560. And then Paul says,

  561. whoa on, buddy.

  562. You have no excuse

  563. either,

  564. you moralist.

  565. O man,

  566. every one of you

  567. who judges

  568. for in passing judgment

  569. on another,

  570. you condemn yourself

  571. because you,

  572. the judge,

  573. practice the same,

  574. very,

  575. very same things.

  576. We know that the judgment

  577. of God rightly falls

  578. on those who practice

  579. such things.

  580. Do you suppose,

  581. O man,

  582. you who judge those

  583. who practice such things

  584. and yet do them yourself,

  585. that you will escape

  586. the judgment of God?

  587. Verse 4,

  588. or do you presume

  589. on the riches

  590. of his kindness

  591. and the forbearance

  592. and patience

  593. and not knowing

  594. that the kindness,

  595. God's kindness

  596. is meant to lead you

  597. to repentance?

  598. Verse 5,

  599. but because of your

  600. hard and impenitent heart,

  601. you moralist

  602. are storing up wrath

  603. for yourself

  604. on the day of wrath

  605. when God's righteous judgment

  606. will be revealed.

  607. Apparently,

  608. the gospel

  609. is not just for hedonists,

  610. it's for moralists too.

  611. The reality is

  612. a moralist

  613. will obey

  614. some of God's holy law.

  615. Think of Steve's

  616. Ten Commandments.

  617. God's Ten Commandments

  618. spoken by Steve.

  619. Run me out of here.

  620. A moralist

  621. will obey

  622. some of God's commands

  623. some of the time.

  624. But a moralist

  625. cannot obey

  626. all of God's holy law

  627. all of the time.

  628. That's the reality.

  629. The problem

  630. is the hypocrisy.

  631. It's when a moralist

  632. thinks some is enough

  633. and because some is enough

  634. I can now judge

  635. other people.

  636. That's the problem

  637. that Paul is addressing.

  638. The moralist

  639. who judges

  640. the hedonist

  641. in their self-righteousness,

  642. Paul says,

  643. you are without excuse.

  644. You are storing up

  645. God's wrath.

  646. Verse 5,

  647. the moralist

  648. is in as much danger

  649. as the hedonist

  650. of God's wrath.

  651. Look at verses 17

  652. through 24

  653. in chapter 2.

  654. But if you call yourself

  655. a Jew

  656. and rely on the law

  657. and boast in God

  658. and know His will

  659. and approve what is excellent

  660. because you are instructed

  661. from the law

  662. and if you are sure

  663. that you yourself

  664. are a guide to the blind,

  665. a light to those

  666. who are in darkness,

  667. an instructor of the foolish,

  668. a teacher of children,

  669. having in the law

  670. the embodiment

  671. of knowledge and truth,

  672. you then who teach others,

  673. do you not teach yourself?

  674. While you preach

  675. against stealing,

  676. do you steal?

  677. You say that

  678. one must not

  679. commit adultery.

  680. Do you commit adultery?

  681. You who abhor idols,

  682. do you rob temples?

  683. You who boast in the law

  684. dishonor God

  685. by breaking the law

  686. and then he quotes

  687. Isaiah 52.

  688. He says,

  689. as it is written,

  690. the name of God

  691. is blasphemed

  692. among the Gentiles

  693. because of you.

  694. So who's in a worse position?

  695. It seems like the moralist

  696. because the moralist hypocrisy

  697. is causing the hedonist

  698. to say,

  699. eh,

  700. their God is not

  701. such a big deal.

  702. Our hypocrisy

  703. confuses non-Christians.

  704. Do you see

  705. your inner moralist

  706. quick to judge

  707. but slow to see

  708. the log in your own eye?

  709. Maybe you judge

  710. the adulterer

  711. yet you are feeding

  712. your sexual lust.

  713. Maybe you judge

  714. the greedy

  715. and yet you give

  716. only when it's convenient.

  717. Maybe you judge

  718. someone else's harshness

  719. yet hop in the minivan

  720. and yell at your kids.

  721. Do you see

  722. your unrighteousness?

  723. All of us

  724. fall short

  725. of God's glory.

  726. None of us.

  727. None

  728. is righteous.

  729. No,

  730. not one.

  731. One of my favorite

  732. parables of Jesus

  733. is Luke 18,

  734. 9-14.

  735. It's the parable

  736. of the Pharisee

  737. and the tax collector.

  738. The parable

  739. of the moralist

  740. and the hedonist.

  741. And Jesus

  742. depicts

  743. both praying to God

  744. and the moralist

  745. is saying,

  746. Oh God Almighty,

  747. thank you

  748. for not making me

  749. a hedonist.

  750. I pray often,

  751. I give much.

  752. And then he turns

  753. to the tax collector

  754. who prays,

  755. have mercy on me,

  756. a sinner.

  757. to which Jesus

  758. says,

  759. who went up

  760. justified

  761. that day?

  762. The hedonist.

  763. Part of the problem

  764. of moralism

  765. is that

  766. it blinds us

  767. to our own

  768. unrighteousness.

  769. Only if we would

  770. humbly take the log

  771. out of our own eye

  772. first

  773. to see our

  774. unrighteousness

  775. problem.

  776. But you know what?

  777. God proclaims

  778. the good news

  779. to you,

  780. moralist.

  781. He's got

  782. God's righteousness

  783. for you.

  784. In chapter 3

  785. verses 9

  786. through 20,

  787. Paul lumps

  788. both the unrighteous

  789. hedonist

  790. and the unrighteous

  791. moralist

  792. together

  793. into the

  794. unrighteous

  795. all of us.

  796. listen to what he says.

  797. This is chapter 3

    Isaiah 3:10

  798. verse 10.

  799. None is righteous,

  800. no, not one.

  801. No one understands,

  802. no one seeks for God.

  803. All have turned aside.

  804. Together they have

  805. become worthless.

  806. No one does good.

  807. No, not even one.

  808. Verse 18,

  809. there is no fear

  810. of God

  811. before their eyes.

  812. Speaking of both

  813. the hedonist

  814. and the moralist.

  815. There may be

  816. different types

  817. of sinner,

  818. different types

  819. of unrighteousness,

  820. but all are

  821. without excuse.

  822. All are under

  823. God's wrath.

  824. The hedonist

  825. and the moralist

  826. are without excuse.

  827. The hedonist

  828. and the moralist

  829. are under God's wrath.

  830. No one is righteous,

  831. no, not even one.

  832. Which means,

  833. right now,

  834. no one on the planet,

  835. no one in and of themselves

  836. has the power

  837. to excuse themselves

  838. from God's judgment.

  839. No one has the power

  840. to escape God's wrath.

  841. No one can make themselves

  842. righteous in his sight.

  843. Brothers and sisters,

  844. our biggest problem

  845. is an unrighteousness problem.

  846. That is the biggest problem

  847. on the planet.

  848. But in order for

  849. God's gospel of righteousness

  850. to make sense to you,

  851. you must own

  852. your unrighteousness.

  853. Whether it's hedonistic

  854. or moralistic,

  855. or like me,

  856. a combination of the two.

  857. Now let's look at

  858. the gospel applied.

  859. Verses 21,

  860. it goes all the way

  861. through 31,

  862. but I'm going to be focusing

  863. really 21 through 25.

  864. Paul has just spent

  865. a lot of time

  866. elaborating on

  867. human unrighteousness.

  868. And in verse 21

  869. of chapter 3,

  870. he circles back

  871. to the gospel.

  872. Oh, thank God

  873. he circles back

  874. to the gospel.

  875. He circles back

  876. to the historic,

  877. effectual,

  878. gospel.

  879. But now the righteousness

  880. of God has been

  881. manifested.

  882. He's been talking

  883. about the unrighteousness

  884. of man.

  885. And now he says,

  886. but now the righteousness

  887. of God has been manifested

  888. apart from the law.

  889. Although the law

  890. and the prophets

  891. bear witness to it,

  892. the righteousness

  893. of God

  894. through faith

  895. in Jesus Christ

  896. for all who believe,

  897. there is no

  898. distinction.

  899. This is good news,

  900. brothers and sisters.

  901. may your soul

  902. rise to what

  903. you're about to hear.

  904. To the unrighteous,

  905. God declares

  906. the good news

  907. of a righteousness,

  908. not our own,

  909. but his,

  910. that saves.

  911. When an unrighteous

  912. hedonist

  913. or moralist

  914. hears and believes

  915. the good news

  916. of the gospel

  917. that Jesus Christ

  918. died and was raised

  919. from the dead,

  920. when they hear that

  921. and they believe that,

  922. God applies

  923. what Christ

  924. has accomplished

  925. through his life,

  926. death,

  927. and resurrection

  928. to that sinner.

  929. It's their salvation,

  930. it's their rescue,

  931. it's their transformation,

  932. it is glorious.

  933. And it's only

  934. by God's grace,

  935. it's only by his power.

  936. Let me point you

  937. to three specific areas

  938. in which God

  939. demonstrates

  940. his saving power

  941. in this passage.

  942. They show up

  943. as three words.

  944. In verse 23,

  945. for all have sinned

  946. and fall short

  947. of the glory of God.

  948. 24,

  949. and are justified

  950. by his grace.

  951. That's a word

  952. you need to pay attention to.

  953. Through the redemption

  954. that is in Christ Jesus,

  955. justification,

  956. redemption,

  957. 25,

  958. whom God put forward

  959. as a propitiation

  960. by his blood

  961. to be received by faith.

  962. Propitiation.

  963. Now you might be thinking,

  964. what?

  965. Propitiation?

  966. I can't even pronounce that.

  967. Justification?

  968. What?

  969. Redemption?

  970. Huh?

  971. Oh,

  972. brothers and sisters,

  973. don't let

  974. the scrabble words

  975. distract you

  976. from the glory.

  977. Let's take them

  978. one at a time

  979. starting with propitiation.

  980. Propitiation is a word

  981. that is having to do

  982. with the realm

  983. of sacrifice.

  984. Offering animal sacrifice.

  985. In the Old Testament,

  986. animal sacrifices

  987. would be offered

  988. on an altar.

  989. Their blood would be spilt

  990. and the belief was that

  991. that shed blood

  992. would propitiate

  993. God's wrath

  994. temporarily.

  995. Satisfy God's wrath.

  996. And what we're reading here

  997. for all those

  998. under God's wrath

  999. is that

1000. by the blood of Jesus,

  1001. God's wrath

  1002. is fully satisfied

  1003. so that there's

  1004. no more wrath.

  1005. On Good Friday,

  1006. Jesus on the cross

  1007. endured God's wrath

  1008. and for all

  1009. who would believe

  1010. all of God's wrath

  1011. that you would

  1012. ever commit

  1013. past,

  1014. present,

  1015. future,

  1016. all of God's wrath

  1017. for your unrighteousness

  1018. was poured out

  1019. on Jesus.

  1020. So the moment

  1021. you believe,

  1022. you are therefore

  1023. now,

  1024. no condemnation

  1025. for those who are

  1026. in Christ Jesus.

  1027. God's wrath

  1028. fully satisfied

  1029. both for the hedonist

  1030. and the moralist.

1031. Do I have an amen?

  1032. That's propitiation.

  1033. You can preach

  1034. like seven sermons

  1035. on that.

  1036. Let's move

  1037. to the next word.

  1038. Redemption.

  1039. Redemption.

  1040. Redemption is having

1041. to do with the realm

  1042. of the slave market.

  1043. Redemption was

  1044. the act of buying

  1045. a slave

  1046. at a ransom price.

  1047. Jesus is not just

  1048. our propitiation,

  1049. He's our redemption.

  1050. When we believed,

  1051. God acted.

  1052. He purchased us

  1053. out of the slavery

  1054. to sin

  1055. and has brought us

  1056. into slavery

  1057. to God.

  1058. Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

1059. You know what that means?

  1060. Have you ever seen

  1061. somebody wearing

  1062. property of UW Parkside?

  1063. Redemption means

  1064. you wear

  1065. property of Jesus.

1066. You belong to Him now.

  1067. And it shows up

1068. in the way we live

  1069. our lives today.

  1070. The last word

  1071. is the word justification.

  1072. It's in verse 24.

  1073. Do you remember

  1074. how both hedonist

  1075. and moralist

  1076. were both without excuse

  1077. because of their

  1078. unrighteousness?

  1079. Justification is

  1080. the language

  1081. of the law court.

  1082. To be justified

  1083. is to be legally

  1084. declared righteous

  1085. in God's sight.

  1086. It's forensic.

  1087. It's legal.

  1088. It's a change

  1089. of your legal status.

  1090. So the moment

  1091. you unrighteous

  1092. one believed

  1093. in the gospel,

  1094. cried out to God,

  1095. God now declared

  1096. you righteous

  1097. in His sight.

  1098. Not on the basis

  1099. of your righteousness

  1100. though.

  1101. On the basis

  1102. of Christ's righteousness.

  1103. The righteousness

  1104. of God.

  1105. Fully imputed

  1106. to you

  1107. forever.

  1108. I'm devoting

  1109. next Sunday's sermon

  1110. to justification

  1111. because it's so important.

  1112. You coming back?

  1113. I can't wait

1114. to what I'm going to say

  1115. because it's like

  1116. for me too.

1117. It's all by His grace.

  1118. Verse 24,

  1119. and are justified

  1120. by His grace

  1121. as a gift.

  1122. You're made righteous

  1123. in God's sight.

1124. You who are without excuse

  1125. now have an excuse.

  1126. Jesus' righteousness.

  1127. And therefore,

  1128. you're righteous

  1129. in His sight.

  1130. It's by His grace.

  1131. Think of grace

  1132. as an acronym.

  1133. God's righteousness

  1134. at Christ's expense.

  1135. By His grace.

  1136. It's all good news.

  1137. Propitiation,

  1138. redemption,

  1139. justification.

  1140. These are words

  1141. that are communicating

  1142. gospel truth,

  1143. gospel goodness

  1144. for those

  1145. who've been rescued

  1146. by the gospel.

  1147. gospel.

  1148. And what's amazing

  1149. about all of this

  1150. is that God

  1151. remains just

  1152. in His justifying

  1153. sinners.

  1154. His character

  1155. doesn't change.

  1156. Is this not the

  1157. greatest news

  1158. you've heard all day?

  1159. It's the greatest news

  1160. you're going to hear

  1161. all week.

  1162. It's the greatest news

  1163. you're going to hear

  1164. all month,

  1165. all summer,

  1166. all fall,

  1167. all year,

  1168. all life.

  1169. Does it refresh

  1170. your soul?

  1171. The gospel defined.

  1172. It's historic.

  1173. Powerful.

  1174. Our problem elaborated.

  1175. All unrighteous

  1176. hedonists and moralists

  1177. are without excuse

  1178. under God's wrath.

  1179. The gospel applied.

  1180. Our God's wrath

  1181. propitiated.

  1182. We have been

  1183. delivered out

  1184. of slavery to sin

  1185. and we have been

  1186. declared righteous

  1187. all by the workings

  1188. of the gospel

  1189. of Jesus Christ.

  1190. Christ.

  1191. It's all focused

  1192. on Him

  1193. and what He's

  1194. accomplished.

  1195. All resulting

  1196. from His life,

  1197. death,

  1198. and resurrection.

  1199. That's why

  1200. no one can boast.

  1201. It's all accomplished

  1202. by Jesus.

  1203. So if you're not

1204. a Christian in the house,

  1205. have you been

  1206. convinced that

  1207. you are unrighteous?

  1208. That you're

  1209. without excuse?

  1210. That you're under

  1211. God's wrath

  1212. this morning?

  1213. If you've come

  1214. to realize that,

  1215. what is keeping you

  1216. from crying out

  1217. to this just

  1218. and loving God

  1219. who will save you

  1220. forever?

  1221. If you're a Christian,

  1222. oh, I hope

  1223. your soul rejoices

  1224. that you've been

  1225. refreshed by remembering

  1226. what God has done

  1227. for you through Christ.

  1228. it's all true

  1229. despite the way

  1230. you feel.

  1231. Do you know

  1232. what I was doing

  1233. at 2 a.m.

  1234. Thursday morning?

  1235. I was walking

  1236. around my neighborhood.

  1237. Do you know why?

  1238. Because I couldn't sleep.

  1239. Do you know why I couldn't?

  1240. Because I was freaking

  1241. out over something.

  1242. And as I'm walking

  1243. on the back nine

  1244. of my block,

  1245. God brings to mind

  1246. the gospel.

  1247. Mike,

  1248. I've propitiated

  1249. the wrath of God

  1250. for you.

  1251. I've redeemed you

  1252. out of slavery.

  1253. I've justified you.

  1254. And when that sunk

  1255. into my heart,

1256. do you know what I said?

  1257. I can sleep now.

1258. And you know what I did?

  1259. I went to sleep.

  1260. We can rejoice

  1261. in this truth

1262. in the ins and outs

  1263. of life

  1264. because God

  1265. has taken care

  1266. of our greatest problem

  1267. in an amazing fashion.

  1268. One last point.

  1269. Brother, sister,

  1270. are you ashamed

  1271. of this gospel?

  1272. Are you ashamed?

  1273. Are you afraid

  1274. to talk about this?

  1275. This announcement

  1276. of God

  1277. to all humanity

  1278. is the only hope

  1279. for all unrighteous humanity.

  1280. It's their only hope.

  1281. We cannot be ashamed

  1282. because everyone

  1283. must hear.

  1284. And with that,

1285. I'm going to close you

  1286. in 2 Corinthians 5.20

  1287. where,

1288. if my memory serves me,

  1289. Paul says,

  1290. we are ambassadors

  1291. of Christ.

  1292. God

  1293. making his appeal

  1294. gospel

  1295. through us.

1296. Let me pray for us.

  1297. God in heaven,

  1298. you are amazing.

1299. And what you have done

  1300. for us,

1301. we are so grateful for.

  1302. Would you cause

  1303. these truths

  1304. to soak

  1305. into the gray matter

  1306. of our brains

  1307. so it permeates

  1308. our life

  1309. with gospel joy?

  1310. God,

  1311. help us

  1312. to live here

  1313. for the rest

  1314. of today

  1315. and this week

  1316. until next week.

  1317. We trust you.

  1318. Thank you,

  1319. God,

  1320. for this word.

1321. In your name we pray.

  1322. Amen.

  1323. Amen.
