  1. If you would open up your pew Bible to page 1119, I am eventually going to get there.

  2. Well, have you ever changed your mind about someone?

  3. Let's say you met someone initially and you were not impressed.

  4. You're kind of like, who is this person?

  5. Kind of turned off, you're guarded, not thinking you're going to spend much time with it.

  6. Then something happens.

  7. And you have a change of heart towards that person.

  8. You've heard about this in some marriages.

  9. Like the wife is initially turned off by her to-be husband back in the early days.

  10. And then something dramatic happens.

  11. And all of a sudden, the wife changes her heart towards this young man and they get married.

  12. Change of heart.

  13. Or maybe someone has changed their mind about you.

  14. You started out out of favor with someone.

  15. And for whatever reason, that person changed their mind about you.

  16. You went from being out of favor to being in favor with them.

  17. Last week's sermon, I made the case from Romans 1, 2, and 3, that all of us, all of us are unrighteous in God's sight.

  18. Whether we are unrighteous hedonists or unrighteous moralists, we're all without excuse before God.

  19. We can't excuse ourselves.

  20. And we are justly under His wrath because of that.

  21. In Romans 5, 10, we read,

  22. We were enemies of God.

  23. Out of favor.

  24. Enemies.

  25. Let me ask you, what would it take

  26. For God to change His mind about an unrighteous sinner who is without excuse and under His wrath?

  27. What would it take for God to change His mind towards you and towards me?

  28. If we are all justly without excuse?

  29. If we are all justly under God's wrath, what would need to change the mind of a just God towards us?

  30. God would need to change us.

  31. God would need to change us.

  32. Justly.

  33. And here we have the doctrine of justification.

  34. Last week, I shared with you from Romans 1 that the gospel of Jesus Christ, this message from God to an unrighteous humanity, it is historic and powerful.

  35. Christ's life, death, and resurrection happened in real space and time.

  36. And that event of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, according to our Bibles, is the source of God's power to people of salvation.

  37. I'm not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God's power for salvation to all who believe, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  38. For in it, the righteousness of God has been revealed from faith to faith.

  39. For it is by faith.

  40. The righteous shall live.

  41. The righteous shall live by faith.

  42. The gospel solves our terrible unrighteousness problem by making us right in the eyes of God.

  43. It is extraordinary.

  44. At the end of the sermon, I circled back to Romans 3.21 because Paul circles back to the gospel.

  45. And I introduced three words to you.

  46. Do you remember those three words if you're here?

  47. The first one was propitiation in 3.25.

  48. It comes from the realm of animal sacrifice.

  49. And animal is sacrificed.

  50. Its blood would shed.

  51. And it would satisfy God's wrath.

  52. Back in the Old Testament, it was only temporary.

  53. But Jesus is our propitiation now.

  54. And his blood shed for us satisfies all of God's wrath that was hanging over us for our unrighteousness.

  55. Then there's another word, redemption.

  56. It's the language of the slave market.

  57. And Jesus ransomed his life to deliver you out of slavery to sin.

  58. And then we came across that word justification, which is in the domain of the law court.

  59. It's legal ease.

  60. By believing in Jesus and his finished work, God declares an unrighteous sinner righteous in his sight.

  61. You go from being out of favor with God, in wrong standing with God,

  62. to by this declaration of God, you are in right standing with God.

  63. So this morning, I'm going to devote the whole sermon to the doctrine of justification.

  64. And here's how we're going to do it.

  65. Doctrine defined, doctrine supported, doctrine applied.

  66. The doctrine of justification explained.

  67. That's why we have this in front of us.

  68. Doctrine supported.

  69. We're going to do a tour de force of Romans 4 and 5.

  70. And then doctrine applied.

  71. There are a number of ways that the doctrine of justification will bring health to your soul, Christian.

  72. And if you're a non-Christian, this is one of the best things you're going to hear in your whole life.

  73. If you're a Christian, God has changed his mind towards you once for all.

  74. You were once under wrath, but now you are under his grace because he changed you.

  75. So let's look at this doctrine defined.

  76. Now I know, some of you in the room, I hear the word doctrine, and you're like,

  77. honey, wake me up in about 30 minutes.

  78. When you hear the word doctrine, you think academy.

  79. You think sleep time.

  80. You think boredom.

  81. You think of the Peanuts cartoon where Charlie Brown's sitting and his teacher's going,

  82. wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.

  83. When you begin to the New Testament, especially in the past orals, the first, second Timothy,

  84. Titus, whenever that word doctrine shows up, there's usually an adjective in front of it.

  85. Translated healthy, sound.

  86. Doctrine simply means teaching what the Bible teaches about something.

  87. And biblical doctrine, Bible teaching is healthy for the Christian.

  88. It brings soundness to the Christian.

  89. And so when we talk about the doctrine of justification, oh, it will bring health to your soul.

  90. In this little book, Concise Theology by J.I. Packer, this is an introduction to Christian doctrine.

  91. And about halfway through the book, he talks about justification and he defines it.

  92. Let me define it for you, according to J.I. Packer.

  93. Justification is a judicial act of God pardoning sinners, accepting them as just,

  94. and so putting permanently right their previously estranged relationship with him.

  95. This justifying sentence or declaration is God's gift of righteousness.

  96. It's bestowal of a status of acceptance for Jesus' sake.

  97. When God justifies an unrighteous sinner, God changes that unrighteous sinner's legal standing before him.

  98. It's a legal change of status.

  99. And he changes his mind about us.

  100. Now, right out of the gate, I want to help you understand how God did that.

  101. The inner workings of how the God of the universe can change his mind about an unrighteous sinner.

  102. Would you turn in your Bibles, if you have a pew Bible, it will be to page 1143.

  103. It's in the book of 2 Corinthians 524.

  104. And Paul's been talking about reconciliation.

  105. We're going to come back to that later in the sermon.

  106. But in 521, he says this.

  107. For our sake, he, God, made him, Jesus, to be sin who knew no sin,

  108. so that in him, Jesus, we might become the righteousness of God.

  109. So right out of the gate, I want to help you understand what theologians call double imputation or the great exchange.

  110. So in light of 2 Corinthians 521, in our conversation about justification to God,

  111. God making just right an unrighteous sinner,

  112. there are two things I want you to see.

  113. Here you are.

  114. And before you believed in Jesus, you were justly under God's wrath.

  115. And so all of God's wrath was storing up over you and would have poured out on you for eternity.

  116. Now the reason for that is, dun, dun, dun, dun.

  117. Can you read this?

  118. This is a binder of your unrighteousness.

  119. A list of offenses in great detail about your life.

  120. Your thought life, your actions, sins of commissions, sins of omissions.

  121. All right here.

  122. And this was the data God needed to pour out his wrath on you.

  123. Justly.

  124. Now over here, we have Jesus Christ.

  125. And Jesus Christ, totally God, totally man, lived on this planet.

  126. And his binder is of perfect righteousness.

  127. Christ's righteousness.

  128. Every day of his life, 24-7, 365.

  129. He pleased God.

  130. He did what none of us can do just in a single day.

  131. He did it his whole life.

  132. So here you have it.

  133. Jesus Christ, Christ's righteousness.

  134. You, under God's wrath because of your unrighteousness.

  135. By the way, Jesus was beloved by the Father.

  136. Accepted fully.

  137. So here is what the doctrine of double imputation is.

  138. When a sinner like you and me believes,

  139. God now responds to that faith by thinking differently.

  140. He now thinks of your righteousness being placed on Jesus.

  141. And that wrath that was over you, he pours out on full.

  142. Poured.

  143. Out on full on Jesus Christ on Good Friday for you.

  144. On all of your sin.

  145. So much so, all of God's wrath for all of your sin was poured out in full.

  146. So there's no more wrath.

  147. He satisfied it.

  148. Propitiated your wrath.

  149. That's the first part of double imputation.

  150. And it gets better.

  151. Because God in that single response,

  152. His justifying grace and mercy,

  153. not only considered your unrighteousness placed on Christ

  154. and all of His wrath poured out on it,

  155. He now thinks of Christ's righteousness

  156. as being imputed to you.

  157. Legally.

  158. A new legal status for the Christian.

  159. And instead of God's fury being poured out,

  160. Oh, there's nothing but favor and mercy and grace,

  161. beloved child that you are.

  162. Do you hear what's going on here?

  163. Now the question is, when did that happen?

  164. The moment you believed that Jesus died for you for the very first time.

  165. That moment, God changed His mind about you.

  166. Because He justified you on the basis of imputing your unrighteousness to Christ

  167. and Christ's righteousness to you.

  168. Can anybody give me an amen?

  169. Amen.

  170. Let me drill down on this a little bit more.

  171. So when we talk about the doctrine of justification,

  172. we're talking about a change of legal status.

  173. There's five things you need to know about the doctrine of justification.

  174. It is a legal declaration.

  175. It's not necessarily experiential.

  176. God changes your legal status.

  177. We've got a couple, James and Joelle,

  178. they're going to be married this Saturday.

  179. I think they're over there.

  180. Give me, hoorah!

  181. They're going to have a legal marital status change.

  182. Done.

  183. When God justifies an unrighteous sinner,

  184. they have a change of legal status before God.

  185. Now that legal declaration is a declaration of God alone.

  186. An unrighteous sinner has nothing to contribute to it.

  187. If you want to say we can contribute to it,

  188. it would be just simply our faith of receiving God's grace.

  189. It's not a work, it's a response.

  190. And even that originates from God's work in you.

  191. So justification is a legal declaration.

  192. It is God alone.

  193. We don't play a role in that other than receive the gift.

  194. It's immediate.

  195. Instantaneous.

  196. The moment you believe,

  197. you are justified in God's sight.

  198. And it's complete.

  199. When you believe for the first time,

  200. and God justifies you,

  201. it's not like God's like,

  202. hey, I'm going to put 10% of your justification down,

  203. and follow up 90% with the rest when you're dead.

  204. No, no.

  205. It's all of Christ's righteousness imputed to you

  206. the moment you believe.

  207. It's complete.

  208. It's full.

  209. That's why the fifth one is,

  210. it's unchanging.

  211. You can have the worst day of your life, Christian,

  212. but you're still completely justified in God's sight.

  213. Isn't that good news?

  214. It's a legal declaration.

  215. It's by God alone.

  216. It's immediate.

  217. It's complete.

  218. It's unchanging.

  219. And you know what?

  220. We can walk away by saying,

  221. you're as justified follower of Jesus

  222. as the apostle Paul is justified.

  223. Because you both share the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

  224. Christ, it's not going to change.

  225. You can't earn this.

  226. You can't work,

  227. put this on layaway and work to it.

  228. It's only received as a gift.

  229. That's why Romans 3.24 says that we're justified

  230. by His grace as a gift.

  231. So the one time and forever legal judgment of God

  232. in which He justly declares an unrighteous sinner

  233. to be righteous in His sight

  234. on the basis of Jesus Christ's finished work,

  235. that's what justification is.

  236. You can do it shorthand.

  237. You can say,

  238. God's declaration of an unrighteous sinner

  239. righteous in His sight.

  240. It's legal.

  241. And so once you've been justified,

  242. you're totally forgiven,

  243. totally accepted.

  244. The great exchange has taken place.

  245. It doesn't get revoked.

  246. It's yours forever.

  247. What has God done to change His mind about you?

  248. He's changed you.

  249. You see?

  250. That's doctrine defined.

  251. Let's look at doctrine supported.

  252. Now you may be sitting in your seat

  253. and you're like,

  254. somebody,

  255. this is just too good to be true.

  256. Are you sure Paul didn't make that up?

  257. How do you know that's true?

  258. When Paul and Silas were on their second missionary journey in Acts 17,

  259. they showed up in this town called Berea,

  260. shared the gospel,

  261. and the Bereans,

  262. they examined the scriptures daily

  263. to see if these things were so.

  264. So for us,

  265. when we hear something

  266. as amazing as this doctrine of justification,

  267. it is good and right for us to say,

  268. is this biblical?

  269. And for what we see in Romans 4 and 5,

  270. the Apostle Paul

  271. lays out four lines of support

  272. for the doctrine of justification,

  273. for a righteousness that's by faith.

  274. You ready?

  275. Tour de force.

  276. We're going to blaze through it.

  277. First line of support,

  278. we read in Romans 4,

  279. 1-12.

  280. Precedent.

  281. Old Testament precedent.

  282. He's laying out a case.

  283. In Romans 4,

  284. 1-12,

  285. the Apostle Paul starts

  286. by talking about

  287. Abraham

  288. and how Abraham

  289. was justified

  290. not by his works

  291. but by his faith.

  292. So in verses

  293. 1-5,

  294. 1-4,

  295. Paul points to Abraham

  296. and says,

  297. Abraham was justified,

  298. made righteous

  299. by faith

  300. in God's grace.

  301. And he quotes

  302. Genesis 15-6.

  303. Abraham believed God

  304. and it was counted

  305. to him as righteousness.

  306. And then in verse 6,

  307. verse 5 and 6,

  308. 7 and 8,

  309. he moves from Abraham

  310. then talking about

  311. David.

  312. And he quotes

  313. Psalm 32,

  314. 1 and 2,

  315. Blessed are those

  316. whose lawless needs

  317. are forgiven

  318. and whose sins are covered.

  319. Blessed is the man

  320. against whom the Lord

  321. will not count

  322. his sin.

  323. And so,

  324. right out of the gate,

  325. Paul is supporting

  326. this righteousness

  327. by faith,

  328. this alien righteousness

  329. imputed to sinners,

  330. the righteousness of Christ,

  331. by pointing to

  332. Genesis 15

  333. and by Psalm 32.

  334. And he's already

  335. showed his cards.

  336. Because back

  337. in Romans 1,

  338. 16 and 17,

  339. this righteousness

  340. from God,

  341. this is how it's always been,

  342. Habakkuk 2-4,

  343. the righteous shall live

  344. by faith.

  345. So I hope you see

  346. what Paul's doing here.

  347. He's setting the precedent.

  348. Now,

  349. there is a word

  350. that gets repeated

  351. in this section.

  352. It's the word count.

  353. In verse 3,

  354. Abraham believed God

  355. and it was counted.

  356. Verse 4,

  357. his wages are not counted

  358. as a gift,

  359. but as his due.

  360. Verse 5,

  361. his faith is counted

  362. as righteousness.

  363. Verse 6,

  364. of the one to whom God

  365. counts righteousness

  366. apart from the work.

  367. Verse 8,

  368. the Lord will not

  369. count his sin.

  370. Verse 9,

  371. that faith was counted

  372. to Abraham as righteousness.

  373. Verse 10,

  374. how then was it counted

  375. to him?

  376. Verse 11,

  377. righteousness would be

  378. counted to them as well.

  379. And if you go all the way

  380. down to verses 22-23,

  381. you've got three more

  382. counted.

  383. What's all this counting?

  384. This is Paul talking

  385. about God's thinking.

  386. God's change of mind.

  387. God's reckoning

  388. a righteousness,

  389. not your own to you.

  390. He's again and again

  391. saying it.

  392. That's what happened

  393. to Abraham.

  394. That's what happened

  395. to David.

  396. That's what Habakkuk

  397. was talking about.

  398. And when you get into

  399. Hebrews 11

  400. and the Hall of Fame,

  401. all those men

  402. and women of faith

  403. made righteous

  404. in God's sight

  405. by faith in God's grace.

  406. In fact,

  407. in verses 9 and 12,

  408. Abraham was justified.

  409. Paul makes this point clear.

  410. Before he was circumcised.

  411. By faith,

  412. not by works.

  413. Here's the point.

  414. Justification by faith,

  415. not works,

  416. is what the Bible

  417. has always taught.

  418. So here's what that means.

  419. Maybe you grew up

  420. in the church

  421. and you're like,

  422. oh yeah,

  423. the Old Testament.

  424. The Old Testament

  425. teaches a salvation

  426. by works of the law.

  427. And the New Testament

  428. teaches a salvation

  429. by faith in God's grace.

  430. You're mistaken.

  431. It's always been

  432. God's grace

  433. receiving righteousness

  434. by faith.

  435. That's the point

  436. Paul's making here

  437. in Romans 4.

  438. Isn't that good news?

  439. Now you may be asking,

  440. hold on a second.

  441. So,

  442. alright,

  443. okay,

  444. alright,

  445. I'm justified

  446. by trusting

  447. in the past

  448. finished work

  449. of Jesus.

  450. Okay,

  451. how about,

  452. like,

  453. how is Abraham

  454. justified

  455. if Jesus hadn't died yet?

  456. How's David justified

  457. if Jesus hasn't died yet?

  458. God justified

  459. Abraham,

  460. David,

  461. and these

  462. Old Testament saints

  463. based on their faith

  464. in the future

  465. finished work

  466. of Jesus.

  467. It's always been

  468. by faith.

  469. Line one,

  470. Old Testament precedent.

  471. Line two,

  472. why justification

  473. is the real deal.

  474. We see this

  475. in chapter 4

  476. verses 13 through 25

  477. in Romans

  478. and it has to do

  479. with this word promise.

  480. If you look

  481. through this part

  482. you will see

  483. the word promise

  484. showing up

  485. a number of times.

  486. In verse 13

  487. we see the word promise.

  488. For the promise

  489. to Abraham

  490. and his offspring

  491. that he would bear

  492. be the heir of the world

  493. did not come through the law

  494. but through the righteousness

  495. of faith.

  496. Verse 14

  497. and the promise

  498. is void.

  499. Verse 16

  500. in order that the promise

  501. may rest on grace

  502. and be guaranteed

  503. to all his offspring.

  504. You scroll down

  505. to verse 20

  506. no unbelief

  507. made him waver

  508. concerning the promise

  509. of God

  510. but he grew strong

  511. in the faith

  512. as he gave glory

  513. to God.

  514. Fully convinced

  515. verse 21

  516. that God was able

  517. to do what he had promised.

  518. But you know what?

  519. There's more.

  520. Because in verse 17

  521. the word promise

  522. isn't used

  523. but there's an actual promise.

  524. As it is written

  525. I have made you

  526. Abraham

  527. the father of many nations.

  528. Promise.

  529. That's Genesis 17.5

  530. And then at the end

  531. of verse 18

  532. God says

  533. so shall your offspring be.

  534. Genesis 15.5

  535. Promise.

  536. What's this promise?

  537. It's God's promise

  538. to Abraham

  539. that through

  540. one of his offspring

  541. he will bless

  542. all the nations

  543. of the world.

  544. That Abraham

  545. will be the father

  546. of many nations.

  547. Not just Israel

  548. the circumcised folk

  549. but everybody.

  550. He will make him

  551. the father of many nations.

  552. His heirs

  553. will number

  554. as the stars

  555. of the heavens.

  556. That promise.

  557. And the point

  558. Paul is making here

  559. is that God's plan

  560. for the very fullness

  561. of time

  562. from the very beginning

  563. was to save

  564. to bless

  565. people

  566. from all nations

  567. through Jesus Christ.

  568. Paul in Galatians 3

  569. makes the case

  570. grammatically

  571. that Jesus Christ

  572. is the offspring

  573. of Abraham

  574. through whom

  575. God will bless

  576. the nation.

  577. So what does this

  578. have to do

  579. with justification

  580. by faith?

  581. This promise

  582. rests on grace

  583. received by faith

  584. not the law.

  585. So that

  586. you can have people

  587. coming into

  588. the kingdom

  589. who aren't Jews

  590. but Gentiles too.

  591. The heirs of this promise

  592. are made righteous

  593. by God's grace

  594. received by faith.

  595. God's promise

  596. to bless the nations

  597. to Abraham

  598. was a promise

  599. of grace

  600. to all people

  601. through Jesus Christ.

  602. God's promise

  603. plan

  604. is a plan

  605. of grace

  606. in which he would

  607. change his mind

  608. towards unrighteous

  609. sinners

  610. by changing

  611. them

  612. by his grace.

  613. God's promise

  614. to Abraham

  615. So when we sing

  616. Father Abraham

  617. had many sons

  618. and many sons

  619. had Father Abraham

  620. I am one of them

  621. and so are you

  622. so

  623. let's just praise

  624. the Lord.

  625. Do you know

  626. how you can be

  627. a son or daughter

  628. of Abraham?

  629. It's not by being

  630. circumcised

  631. it's not by

  632. obedience to

  633. Jewish dietary laws

  634. it comes

  635. through a righteousness

  636. by faith

  637. based on grace

  638. it's the promise

  639. Do I have an amen?

  640. Come on

  641. I'm so thrilled

  642. all week long

  643. man

  644. you should think

  645. I'm like lying on my back

  646. can't we preach this?

  647. Alright

  648. third line of support

  649. I'm going to have to

  650. speed this up

  651. a little bit

  652. this next section

  653. is chapter 5

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  654. 1 through 11

  655. Tour de force

  656. and in this section

  657. we go from

  658. talking about promise

  659. to talking about

  660. a very important word

  661. in your Bible

  662. let me see if I can

  663. emphasize it

  664. by reading it

  665. therefore

  666. since we have been

  667. justified by faith

  668. we have

  669. peace with God

  670. through our Lord

  671. Jesus Christ

  672. peace

  673. shalom

  674. and the peace

  675. that's being talked

  676. about is

  677. the satisfaction

  678. of all of God's

  679. wrath

  680. for your sin

  681. in the propitiating

  682. work of Jesus

  683. and you being

  684. made righteous

  685. in his sight

  686. by being imputed

  687. the righteousness

  688. of Christ

  689. so there is

  690. therefore now

  691. no condemnation

  692. for those who are

  693. in Christ Jesus

  694. that's the peace

  695. so now you turn

  696. to the end

  697. of this section

  698. and you're like

  699. okay

  700. where's the peace

  701. verse 10

  702. salvation

  703. where's the peace

  704. no peace

  705. verse 11

  706. no peace

  707. there's a different word

  708. reconciled

  709. for if while

  710. we were enemies

  711. we were

  712. reconciled to God

  713. by the death

  714. of his son

  715. made peace with

  716. much more

  717. now that we are

  718. reconciled

  719. shall we be saved

  720. by his life

  721. more than that

  722. we also rejoice

  723. in God

  724. through our Lord

  725. Jesus Christ

  726. whom we have

  727. now received

  728. reconciliation

  729. peace

  730. this passage

  731. is about peace

  732. this is what

  733. the justifying

  734. grace of God

  735. does for sinners

  736. it results

  737. in peace

  738. real peace

  739. not fake peace

  740. real peace

  741. it is the only

  742. means given

  743. by God

  744. in which a sinner

  745. can be at peace

  746. with God

  747. Paul is arguing

  748. here

  749. there's no other

  750. peace

  751. with God

  752. outside of this

  753. justification

  754. by grace

  755. through faith

  756. God has changed

  757. his mind

  758. by changing

  759. you

  760. now there's

  761. something

  762. you just gotta

  763. see

  764. just gotta

  765. see it

  766. in the middle

  767. of this

  768. passage about

  769. peace

  770. something else

  771. comes up

  772. what

  773. would

  774. compel

  775. a just

  776. and holy

  777. God

  778. to go

  779. to such

  780. lengths

  781. to send

  782. his one

  783. and only

  784. son

  785. to live

  786. a perfect

  787. life

  788. to die

  789. in the

  790. place

  791. of sinners

  792. to be

  793. raised

  794. from the

  795. dead

  796. reigning

  797. on high

  798. and offer

  799. salvation

  800. to the

  801. nations

  802. what

  803. would

  804. compel

  805. God

  806. to go

  807. to such

  808. extreme

  809. lengths

  810. for

  811. sinners

  812. check out

  813. verse 6

  814. chapter 5

  815. for while

  816. we were

  817. still weak

  818. at the

  819. right time

  820. Christ

  821. died

  822. for the

  823. ungodly

  824. for one

  825. will scarcely

  826. die for

  827. a righteous

  828. person

  829. though perhaps

  830. for a good

  831. person

  832. one dare

  833. even to

  834. die

  835. but God

  836. shows

  837. his

  838. love

  839. for us

  840. in that

  841. while we

  842. were still

  843. sinners

  844. Christ

  845. died

  846. for us

  847. since

  848. therefore

  849. we have

  850. now been

  851. justified

  852. by his

  853. blood

  854. much more

  855. shall

  856. we be

  857. saved

  858. by him

  859. from the

  860. wrath

  861. of God

  862. you see

  863. what

  864. drove

  865. our

  866. just

  867. and holy

  868. God

  869. to go

  870. to such

  871. lengths

  872. to make

  873. you

  874. righteous

  875. in his

  876. sight

  877. was his

  878. love

  879. for you

  880. he wanted

  881. to be

  882. reconciled

  883. with you

  884. he needed

  885. to make

  886. peace

  887. with you

  888. he knew

  889. you couldn't

  890. make peace

  891. with him

  892. your unrighteous

  893. deeds stood

  894. against you

  895. so he

  896. made a

  897. way

  898. through

  899. Jesus

  900. the peacemaker

  901. all throughout

  902. this passage

  903. you have

  904. Christ

  905. died

  906. for the

  907. unrighteous

  908. godly

  909. Christ

  910. died

  911. for us

  912. justified

  913. by his

  914. blood

  915. we are

  916. enemies

  917. reconciled

  918. to God

  919. by the

  920. death

  921. of his

  922. son

  923. the death

  924. of Jesus

  925. is God's

  926. love

  927. for sinners

  928. to make

  929. peace

  930. with us

  931. to justify

  932. us

  933. it's

  934. beautiful

  935. so by

  936. believing

  937. in the

  938. gospel

  939. a sinner

  940. is not

  941. just

  942. justified

  943. in God's

  944. sight

  945. he is

  946. she is

  947. reconciled

  948. to God

  949. and there

  950. is peace

  951. between the

  952. sinner

  953. and God

  954. and what

  955. drove that

  956. is love

  957. perfect love

  958. casts out

  959. fear

  960. what a

  961. God

  962. what peace

  963. okay the

  964. fourth line

  965. of support

  966. is in 5

  967. 12 through

  968. 21

  969. we've looked

  970. at precedent

  971. we've looked

  972. at promise

  973. we've looked

  974. at peace

  975. and now the

  976. fourth p word

  977. proxy

  978. in chapter 5

  979. 12 through

  980. 21

  981. one of the

  982. other results

  983. of God's

  984. grace in our

  985. life

  986. is that we've

  987. got a new

  988. proxy

  989. in 12

  990. to 21

  991. Paul

  992. contrasts

  993. two men

  994. Adam

  995. and Jesus

  996. Christ

  997. and think

  998. of these

  999. two men

  1000. as the

  1001. proxies

  1002. for all

  1003. mankind

  1004. you're

  1005. you're

  1006. either

  1007. represented

  1008. by Adam

  1009. or you're

  1010. represented

  1011. by Jesus

  1012. all human

  1013. beings

  1014. are either

  1015. in Adam

  1016. or in

  1017. Jesus

  1018. and by

  1019. proxy

  1020. as a

  1021. representative

  1022. head

  1023. and throughout

  1024. this passage

  1025. Paul lumps

  1026. all people

  1027. as either

  1028. being in

  1029. Adam

  1030. or being

  1031. in Christ

  1032. Jesus

  1033. notice

  1034. he doesn't

  1035. lump all

  1036. people as

  1037. either Jew

  1038. or Gentile

  1039. what he's

  1040. talking about

  1041. is how

  1042. God

  1043. sees

  1044. all people

  1045. as either

  1046. being in

  1047. Adam

  1048. or being

  1049. in Jesus

  1050. and if you're

  1051. in Adam

  1052. you're

  1053. experiencing a

  1054. life marked

  1055. by sin

  1056. death

  1057. judgment

  1058. condemnation

  1059. the reign

  1060. of sin

  1061. but if

  1062. you're

  1063. in

  1064. Christ

  1065. Jesus

  1066. your life

  1067. is marked

  1068. by ongoing

  1069. righteousness

  1070. it's

  1071. life

  1072. not death

  1073. grace

  1074. as a

  1075. free gift

  1076. you're

  1077. made

  1078. righteous

  1079. legally

  1080. and now

  1081. you're

  1082. under

  1083. the reign

  1084. of grace

  1085. who's your

  1086. proxy

  1087. how

  1088. does

  1089. God

  1090. change

  1091. his mind

  1092. about you

  1093. he gives

  1094. you a new

  1095. proxy

  1096. Jesus

  1097. his

  1098. justifying

  1099. grace

  1100. moves you

  1101. from

  1102. Adam

  1103. to Jesus

  1104. you know

  1105. I know

  1106. not everybody

  1107. is a

  1108. what's his

  1109. name

  1110. I forget

  1111. his name

  1112. Harry

  1113. Potter

  1114. fan

  1115. I've read

  1116. the books

  1117. seen some

  1118. of the movies

  1119. I know

  1120. it's about

  1121. wizards

  1122. going to

  1123. wizard school

  1124. apparently

  1125. when

  1126. first year

  1127. wizards

  1128. go to

  1129. the wizard

  1130. school

  1131. of

  1132. Hogwarts

  1133. they're

  1134. eating

  1135. in this

  1136. big

  1137. banquet

  1138. hall

  1139. and

  1140. there's

  1141. this

  1142. talking

  1143. hat

  1144. that

  1145. goes

  1146. on

  1147. their

  1148. head

  1149. and

  1150. the

  1151. talking

  1152. hat

  1153. decides

  1154. which

  1155. house

  1156. for them

  1157. to go

  1158. to

  1159. and

  1160. there

  1161. are

  1162. four

  1163. houses

  1164. in

  1165. Hogwarts

  1166. but

  1167. there's

  1168. really

  1169. two

  1170. that

  1171. matter

  1172. most

  1173. Slytherin

  1174. and

  1175. Gryffindorff

  1176. and

  1177. this

  1178. hat

  1179. decides

  1180. which

  1181. house

  1182. you're

  1183. in

  1184. God's

  1185. word

  1186. here

  1187. we're

  1188. learning

  1189. that

  1190. God

  1191. sees

  1192. all

  1193. humanity

  1194. in

  1195. one

  1196. of

  1197. two

  1198. houses

  1199. house

  1200. of

  1201. Adam

  1202. sin

  1203. reigning

  1204. to

  1205. death

  1206. or

  1207. the

  1208. house

  1209. of

  1210. Jesus

  1211. grace

  1212. reigning

  1213. in

  1214. life

  1215. and

  1216. the

  1217. way

  1218. you

  1219. move

  1220. from

  1221. one

  1222. house

  1223. to

  1224. the

  1225. other

  1226. is

  1227. not

  1228. by

  1229. working

  1230. your

  1231. way

  1232. there

  1233. it's

  1234. by

  1235. trusting

  1236. in

  1237. Jesus

  1238. finished

  1239. work

  1240. there

  1241. and

  1242. so

  1243. God

  1244. now

  1245. declares

  1246. a

  1247. sinner

  1248. righteous

  1249. in

  1250. his

  1251. sight

  1252. in

  1253. the

  1254. house

  1255. of

  1256. Jesus

  1257. solely

  1258. based

  1259. on

  1260. that

  1261. sinner's

  1262. trusting

  1263. in

  1264. God's

  1265. promise

  1266. is that

  1267. amazing

  1268. Christian

  1269. you're

  1270. in the

  1271. house

  1272. of

  1273. Jesus

  1274. now

  1275. non

  1276. Christian

  1277. it's

  1278. time to

  1279. go

  1280. from

  1281. the

  1282. house

  1283. of

  1284. Adam

  1285. to

  1286. the

  1287. house

  1288. of

  1289. Jesus

  1290. all

  1291. right

  1292. let's

  1293. do

  1294. doctrine

  1295. applied

  1296. we've

  1297. defined

  1298. justification

  1299. God

  1300. declaring

  1301. an

  1302. unrighteous

  1303. sinner

  1304. righteous

  1305. in

  1306. his

  1307. sight

  1308. based

  1309. on

  1310. the

  1311. finished

  1312. work

  1313. of

  1314. Jesus

  1315. we've

  1316. looked

  1317. at

  1318. the

  1319. support

  1320. there

  1321. is

  1322. biblical

  1323. precedent

  1324. there

  1325. is

  1326. the

  1327. promise

  1328. to

  1329. Abraham

  1330. there

  1331. is

  1332. this

  1333. peace

  1334. and

  1335. now

  1336. Jesus

  1337. is

  1338. our

  1339. proxy

  1340. doctrine

  1341. applied

  1342. I

  1343. actually

  1344. have

  1345. five

  1346. B's

  1347. but

  1348. I'm

  1349. getting

  1350. hot

  1351. up

  1352. here

  1353. is

  1354. anybody

  1355. hot

  1356. out

  1357. there

  1358. I'm

  1359. about

  1360. to

  1361. wilt

  1362. but

  1363. man

  1364. I'll

  1365. name

  1366. the

  1367. B's

  1368. and

  1369. I'm

  1370. going

  1371. to

  1372. pick

  1373. just

  1374. two

  1375. to

  1376. hit

  1377. doctrine

  1378. applied

  1379. for

  1380. Christians

  1381. the

  1382. doctrine

  1383. of

  1384. justification

  1385. is

  1386. your

  1387. belay

  1388. one

  1389. the

  1390. doctrine

  1391. of

  1392. justification

  1393. is

  1394. your

  1395. ballast

  1396. two

  1397. the

  1398. doctrine

  1399. of

  1400. justification

  1401. is

  1402. your

  1403. boldness

  1404. three

  1405. the

  1406. doctrine

  1407. of

  1408. justification

  1409. is

  1410. your

  1411. battle

  1412. cry

  1413. four

  1414. and

  1415. the

  1416. doctrine

  1417. of

  1418. justification

  1419. is

  1420. your

  1421. boast

  1422. five

  1423. let's

  1424. talk

  1425. belay

  1426. ballast

  1427. battle

  1428. cry

  1429. when I

  1430. was a

  1431. youth

  1432. pastor

  1433. I'd

  1434. bring

  1435. youth

  1436. all

  1437. around

  1438. Wisconsin

  1439. and we

  1440. would

  1441. do a

  1442. lot

  1443. of

  1444. rock

  1445. climbing

  1446. it

  1447. was

  1448. great

  1449. for

  1450. young

  1451. people

  1452. to

  1453. get

  1454. stretched

  1455. team

  1456. building

  1457. is

  1458. wonderful

  1459. but

  1460. what

  1461. would

  1462. happen

  1463. is

  1464. a

  1465. student

  1466. would

  1467. wear

  1468. a

  1469. girdle

  1470. and

  1471. there's

  1472. this

  1473. rope

  1474. that

  1475. goes

  1476. down

  1477. they

  1478. would

  1479. click

  1480. in

  1481. with

  1482. a

  1483. carabiner

  1484. and

  1485. that

  1486. rope

  1487. would

  1488. go

  1489. all

  1490. the

  1491. way

  1492. to

  1493. the

  1494. top

  1495. of

  1496. the

  1497. cliff

  1498. that's

  1499. anchored

  1500. up

  1501. there

  1502. and

  1503. they

  1504. would

  1505. come

  1506. down

  1507. and

  1508. behind

  1509. them

  1510. was

  1511. a

  1512. person

  1513. called

  1514. a

  1515. belayer

  1516. and

  1517. that

  1518. belayer

  1519. was

  1520. actually

  1521. kind

  1522. of

  1523. anchoring

  1524. the

  1525. rope

  1526. and

  1527. so

  1528. this

  1529. climber's

  1530. health

  1531. and

  1532. well

  1533. being

  1534. actually

  1535. depended

  1536. on

  1537. the

  1538. belayer

  1539. and

  1540. so

  1541. when

  1542. a

  1543. student

  1544. was

  1545. about

  1546. to

  1547. climb

  1548. they

  1549. would

  1550. look

  1551. back

  1552. at

  1553. the

  1554. belayer

  1555. and

  1556. they

  1557. would

  1558. say

  1559. belayer

  1560. on

  1561. question

  1562. mark

  1563. and

  1564. the

  1565. belayer

  1566. would

  1567. say

  1568. back

  1569. belayer

  1570. on

  1571. I

  1572. got

  1573. you

  1574. the

  1575. doctrine

  1576. of

  1577. justification

  1578. is

  1579. like

  1580. this

  1581. inseparable

  1582. rope

  1583. between

  1584. you

  1585. and

  1586. Jesus

  1587. in

  1588. which

  1589. you

  1590. every

  1591. morning

  1592. can

  1593. you

  1594. imagine

  1595. you

  1596. are

  1597. turning

  1598. to

  1599. the

  1600. God

  1601. of

  1602. the

  1603. universe

  1604. and

  1605. you're

  1606. like

  1607. belayer

  1608. on

  1609. am I

  1610. justified

  1611. and

  1612. then

  1613. the

  1614. God

  1615. of

  1616. the

  1617. universe

  1618. says

  1619. belayer

  1620. on

  1621. baby

  1622. if

  1623. God

  1624. is

  1625. for

  1626. you

  1627. who

  1628. can

  1629. be

  1630. against

  1631. you

  1632. the

  1633. thing

  1634. is

  1635. if

  1636. you're

  1637. a

  1638. believed

  1639. in

  1640. Jesus

  1641. the

  1642. belayer

  1643. is

  1644. on

  1645. whether

  1646. you

  1647. think

  1648. it's

  1649. on

  1650. or

  1651. not

  1652. he's

  1653. got

  1654. you

  1655. regardless

  1656. of

  1657. how

  1658. you

  1659. feel

  1660. you're

  1661. justified

  1662. it

  1663. is

  1664. a

  1665. legal

  1666. declaration

  1667. if

  1668. you

  1669. were

  1670. American

  1671. living

  1672. in

  1673. Iran

  1674. chances

  1675. are

  1676. you're

  1677. not

  1678. going

  1679. to

  1680. be

  1681. feeling

  1682. too

  1683. American

  1684. but

  1685. you

  1686. are

  1687. a

  1688. U.S.

  1689. citizen

  1690. you

  1691. if

  1692. you're

  1693. justified

  1694. you

  1695. are

  1696. justified

  1697. and

  1698. belayed

  1699. in

  1700. regardless

  1701. of

  1702. how

  1703. you

  1704. feel

  1705. ballast

  1706. anybody

  1707. know

  1708. the song

  1709. the wreck

  1710. of the

  1711. Edmund

  1712. Fitzgerald

  1713. that would

  1714. have been

  1715. awesome

  1716. if that

  1717. was

  1718. actually

  1719. the wreck

  1720. of the

  1721. Edmund

  1722. Fitzgerald

  1723. well

  1724. on Lake

  1725. Michigan

  1726. you

  1727. can

  1728. get

  1729. some

  1730. crazy

  1731. seas

  1732. crazy

  1733. lake

  1734. waves

  1735. and

  1736. obviously

  1737. on the

  1738. Atlantic

  1739. Pacific

  1740. too

  1741. and

  1742. back

  1743. in the

  1744. day

  1745. I

  1746. think

  1747. they

  1748. still

  1749. do

  1750. this

  1751. they

  1752. would

  1753. put

  1754. ballast

  1755. at

  1756. the

  1757. very

  1758. bottom

  1759. the

  1760. hull

  1761. of

  1762. a

  1763. boat

  1764. and

  1765. ballast

  1766. would

  1767. be

  1768. rocks

  1769. metal

  1770. things

  1771. like

  1772. that

  1773. and

  1774. so

  1775. what

  1776. happens

  1777. is

  1778. the

  1779. center

  1780. of

  1781. gravity

  1782. for

  1783. a

  1784. boat

  1785. it

  1786. actually

  1787. then

  1788. resides

  1789. underneath

  1790. the

  1791. water

  1792. line

  1793. you

  1794. know

  1795. what

  1796. that

  1797. does

  1798. it

  1799. keeps a

  1800. boat

  1801. from

  1802. being

  1803. overturned

  1804. it

  1805. can

  1806. get

  1807. hit

  1808. by

  1809. a

  1810. rogue

  1811. wave

  1812. and

  1813. it

  1814. doesn't

  1815. overturn

  1816. the

  1817. doctrine

  1818. of

  1819. justification

  1820. is

  1821. ballast

  1822. for a

  1823. Christian

  1824. soul

  1825. because

  1826. if

  1827. you're

  1828. like

  1829. me

  1830. usually

  1831. a few

  1832. times

  1833. a week

  1834. maybe

  1835. a few

  1836. times

  1837. a day

  1838. you

  1839. get

  1840. accused

  1841. you

  1842. get

  1843. a

  1844. fiery

  1845. dark

  1846. shot

  1847. at you

  1848. trying

  1849. to

  1850. make

  1851. you

  1852. think

  1853. that

  1854. you

  1855. should

  1856. be

  1857. afraid

  1858. of

  1859. God

  1860. I

  1861. did

  1862. some

  1863. things

  1864. in

  1865. high

  1866. school

  1867. that

  1868. I

  1869. have

  1870. such

  1871. deep

  1872. regrets

  1873. over

  1874. and

  1875. to

  1876. this

  1877. day

  1878. I

  1879. know

  1880. I'm

  1881. 51

  1882. I

  1883. look

  1884. like

  1885. I'm

  1886. 23

  1887. but

  1888. to

  1889. this

  1890. day

  1891. to

  1892. this

  1893. day

  1894. those

  1895. things

  1896. can

  1897. haunt

  1898. me

  1899. and

  1900. you

  1901. know

  1902. what

  1903. I

  1904. have

  1905. to

  1906. say

  1907. to

  1908. them

  1909. I'm

  1910. belayed

  1911. in

  1912. and

  1913. Jesus

  1914. is

  1915. my

  1916. ballast

  1917. you

  1918. can

  1919. throw

  1920. anything

  1921. at

  1922. me

  1923. but

  1924. everything

  1925. that

  1926. I've

  1927. done

  1928. has

  1929. been

  1930. paid

  1931. in

  1932. full

  1933. by

  1934. Jesus

  1935. doesn't

  1936. stick

  1937. I'm

  1938. going to

  1939. keep

  1940. chugging

  1941. by God's

  1942. grace

  1943. the doctrine

  1944. of justification

  1945. is

  1946. your

  1947. ballast

  1948. we

  1949. need

  1950. to

  1951. help

  1952. each

  1953. other

  1954. there

  1955. remind

  1956. each

  1957. other

  1958. the

  1959. ballast

  1960. in

  1961. us

  1962. through

  1963. Christ

  1964. boldness

  1965. hey

  1966. confess

  1967. your sins

  1968. you've

  1969. got

  1970. nothing

  1971. to be

  1972. ashamed

  1973. of

  1974. battle

  1975. cry

  1976. the

  1977. doctrine

  1978. of

  1979. justification

  1980. you

  1981. know

  1982. what

  1983. it

  1984. does

  1985. it

  1986. makes

  1987. you

  1988. come

  1989. out

  1990. swinging

  1991. instead

  1992. of

  1993. letting

  1994. your

  1995. sin

  1996. rule

  1997. over

  1998. you

  1999. like

  2000. you're

  2001. still

  2002. under

  2003. your

  2004. old

  2005. proxy

  2006. Adam

  2007. you've

  2008. been

  2009. shifted

  2010. to a

  2011. new

  2012. house

  2013. you're

  2014. not

  2015. under

  2016. sin

  2017. anymore

  2018. at

  2019. the

  2020. reign

  2021. of

  2022. sin

  2023. has

  2024. been

  2025. destroyed

  2026. that

  2027. dominion

  2028. has

  2029. been

  2030. crushed

  2031. by

  2032. Jesus

  2033. and

  2034. now

  2035. we

  2036. are

  2037. under

  2038. the

  2039. reign

  2040. of

  2041. grace

  2042. and

  2043. so

  2044. when

  2045. I

  2046. think

  2047. of

  2048. being

  2049. justified

  2050. and

  2051. I

  2052. belay

  2053. in

  2054. in

  2055. the

  2056. morning

  2057. and

  2058. when

  2059. you

  2060. think

  2061. about

  2062. that

  2063. too

  2064. that

  2065. is

  2066. your

  2067. battle

  2068. cry

  2069. to

  2070. fight

  2071. the

  2072. sin

  2073. that

  2074. remains

  2075. within

  2076. because

  2077. the

  2078. reality

  2079. is

  2080. you're

  2081. simultaneously

  2082. justified

  2083. and

  2084. sinful

  2085. this

  2086. side

  2087. of

  2088. glory

  2089. justification

  2090. when

  2091. I

  2092. encounter

  2093. a

  2094. brother

  2095. who's

  2096. struggling

  2097. with

  2098. pornography

  2099. do

  2100. you

  2101. know

  2102. what

  2103. I

  2104. set

  2105. out

  2106. to

  2107. do

  2108. to

  2109. convince

  2110. him

  2111. of

  2112. his

  2113. justification

  2114. that's

  2115. what

  2116. I

  2117. set

  2118. out

  2119. to

  2120. do

  2121. and

  2122. that's

  2123. what

  2124. Paul

  2125. does

  2126. in

  2127. Romans

  2128. 3

  2129. 4

  2130. and

  2131. 5

  2132. justifications

  2133. laid

  2134. out

  2135. and

  2136. then

  2137. Romans

  2138. 6

  2139. he

  2140. starts

  2141. going

  2142. after

  2143. sanctification

  2144. and

  2145. that's

  2146. where

  2147. we're

  2148. going

  2149. to

  2150. go

  2151. for

  2152. for

  2153. for

  2154. for

  2155. for

  2156. for

  2157. the next

  2158. two weeks

  2159. I

  2160. needed to

  2161. help you

  2162. understand

  2163. what

  2164. we can

  2165. pursue

  2166. sanctification

  2167. justification

  2168. is the

  2169. one time

  2170. act of

  2171. God

  2172. in which

  2173. we're

  2174. made

  2175. legally

  2176. righteous

  2177. in

  2178. his

  2179. sight

  2180. sanctification

  2181. is the

  2182. day

  2183. in

  2184. day

  2185. out

  2186. street

  2187. fight

  2188. of

  2189. living

  2190. out

  2191. that

  2192. righteousness

  2193. come

  2194. for the

  2195. next

  2196. two

  2197. weeks

  2198. we're

  2199. going

  2200. to be

  2201. in

  2202. Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  2203. chapter

  2204. 6

  2205. alright

  2206. doctrine

  2207. defined

  2208. doctrine

  2209. supported

  2210. doctrine

  2211. applied

  2212. somewhat

  2213. Christian

  2214. on the

  2215. basis

  2216. of

  2217. Christ's

  2218. finished

  2219. work

  2220. God

  2221. has

  2222. changed

  2223. his

  2224. mind

  2225. towards

  2226. you

  2227. because

  2228. he

  2229. changed

  2230. you

  2231. belay

  2232. on

  2233. belay

  2234. on

  2235. you're

  2236. justified

  2237. the

  2238. doctrine

  2239. of

  2240. justification

  2241. is

  2242. health

  2243. to

  2244. your

  2245. soul

  2246. non

  2247. Christian

  2248. if

  2249. you

  2250. still

  2251. fear

  2252. God

  2253. has

  2254. yet

  2255. to

  2256. change

  2257. his

  2258. mind

  2259. about

  2260. you

  2261. that

  2262. you're

  2263. still

  2264. without

  2265. excuse

  2266. you're

  2267. still

  2268. under

  2269. his

  2270. wrath

  2271. that

  2272. you

  2273. think

  2274. it

  2275. up

  2276. to

  2277. you

  2278. to

  2279. fix

  2280. your

  2281. life

  2282. he

  2283. loves

  2284. you

  2285. so

  2286. much

  2287. that

  2288. he

  2289. sent

  2290. his

  2291. son

  2292. to

  2293. die

  2294. for

  2295. you

  2296. to

  2297. change

  2298. you

  2299. so

  2300. he

  2301. could

  2302. change

  2303. his

  2304. mind

  2305. about

  2306. you

  2307. too

  2308. he

  2309. offers

  2310. you

  2311. full

  2312. forgiveness

  2313. and

  2314. acceptance

  2315. today

  2316. and you

  2317. too

  2318. can

  2319. belay

  2320. in

  2321. if

  2322. you're

  2323. a

  2324. non

  2325. Christian

  2326. it's

  2327. time

  2328. to

  2329. leave

  2330. the

  2331. house

  2332. of

  2333. Adam

  2334. and

  2335. come

  2336. into

  2337. the

  2338. house

  2339. of

  2340. Jesus

  2341. by

  2342. faith

  2343. if

  2344. you

  2345. confess

  2346. with

  2347. your

  2348. mouth

  2349. that

  2350. Jesus

  2351. is

  2352. Lord

  2353. and

  2354. believe

  2355. in

  2356. your

  2357. heart

  2358. that

  2359. God

  2360. raised

  2361. him

  2362. from

  2363. the

  2364. dead

  2365. you'll

  2366. be

  2367. saved

  2368. or

  2369. you

  2370. will

  2371. be

  2372. justified

  2373. pray

  2374. with

  2375. me

  2376. God

  2377. in

  2378. heaven

  2379. would

  2380. you

  2381. use

  2382. my

  2383. little

  2384. fish

  2385. and

  2386. loaves

  2387. to

  2388. do

  2389. big

  2390. work

  2391. in

  2392. people's

  2393. lives

  2394. for

  2395. the

  2396. glory

  2397. of

  2398. your

  2399. name
