  1. Well, in 2003, the United States invaded Iraq.

  2. In Saddam Hussein, his regime, his tyranny was toppled.

  3. He had no more authority in Iraq.

  4. But if you're familiar with that time,

  5. it was months before Saddam Hussein was actually captured.

  6. So for months, he was on the run in Iraq,

  7. exerting all sorts of mayhem in that country.

  8. Though he was in hiding, he was exerting influence.

  9. Despite not having any authority, he was still wreaking havoc.

  10. It's a great picture of indwelling sin in the life of a believer.

  11. The cross of Jesus Christ has paid the penalty of sin.

  12. The cross of Jesus Christ has broken the power of sin.

  13. And yet the cross of Jesus Christ has yet to eradicate sin from the life of a believer.

  14. We are simultaneously justified in God's eyes, and yet we still sin.

  15. And we have this little tyrant called indwelling sin wreaking havoc in our lives.

  16. Today we're going to be looking at the second half of Romans 6.

  17. And what you need to know going into Romans, the second half,

  18. is that the Apostle Paul is assuming that a Christian is experiencing the influence of indwelling sin,

  19. and that that sin exerts influence,

  20. and it's wanting you to obey its passions, its desires, its cravings.

  21. You know what I love about my Bible?

  22. It's the best explanation for reality.

  23. It explains my experience as a Christian to a T.

  24. And so what we have here in Romans chapter 6, especially the latter half here,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  25. is a way in which we are to think about our relationship with sin

  26. now that Jesus has radically changed us by His grace.

  27. Last week I asked you, as the close of the sermon,

  28. to be thinking about a particular sin that you,

  29. in the vein of Romans 6, 12, and 13,

  30. that you regularly offer the instruments of your body to.

  31. Where are you tempted to sin?

  32. It would be very appropriate to be asking,

  33. okay, how am I presenting my body to sexual lust?

  34. How am I presenting my body to covetousness,

  35. to greed, to the fear of man,

  36. to this anxiety that can suffocate me,

  37. this pride that thinks I'm better than anybody else,

  38. or I'm not as good as anyone else?

  39. What is this thing in me that causes these outbursts of anger,

  40. and I end up giving myself to it?

  41. Brother, sister, God's will for you is your sanctification,

  42. for you to become more and more like Jesus in your everyday life.

  43. One old timer said it this way.

  44. Be killing sin,

  45. or sin will be killing you.

  46. There's no such thing as indifference with regard to indwelling sin.

  47. If you're indifferent to it,

  48. you are already serving it.

  49. Christians, we no longer serve sin.

  50. We slay sin.

  51. And sanctification is the process of being ruled less and less by indwelling sin

  52. and becoming more and more holy like our Lord Jesus Christ.

  53. You see, God's grace isn't an excuse to sin.

  54. God's grace compels us, trains us to be holy.

  55. So we're going to move forward,

  56. as we have been over the next couple of last Sundays.

  57. We're going to look at doctrine defined.

  58. So we're going to circle back to this thing called sanctification.

  59. I'm going to walk you through that chart I showed you last week

  60. just to remind those of you who are here,

  61. and if you weren't here,

  62. so those of you who weren't here

  63. see a very important distinction

  64. between the doctrine of justification and sanctification.

  65. And then we're going to dive into Romans chapter 6, 15 through 23.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  66. I'm going to help you see that this doctrine of sanctification is biblical.

  67. We just can't agree to it.

  68. We must be engaging in it.

  69. And then finally, I'm going to apply this doctrine in two ways.

  70. A holy mindset, we've got to be thinking a certain way,

  71. and a holy skill set

  72. in which you are equipped to slay your sin

  73. and bring to life godliness.

  74. Hey, have you been using grace as an excuse to sin?

  75. Let's look at this doctrine defined.

  76. Two weeks ago,

  77. I preached a sermon on justification,

  78. and I think it ministered to many of you.

  79. Oh boy.

  80. Just, I know, I got it.

  81. Okay, this is my sanctification.

  82. Yeah, thank you.

  83. Thank you.

  84. Yeah.

  85. I'm a graduate of Thompson Junior High School.

  86. And yes,

  87. I got a massive dry erase marker for this moment.

  88. Okay, justification, just to remind you.

  89. The doctrine of justification teaches this.

  90. We see this in Romans 5, 1.

  91. That God, in a one-time legal act,

  92. declares an unrighteous sinner righteous in His sight,

  93. based upon that sinner's faith

  94. in the finished work of Christ.

  95. And so, the moment a sinner believes in the gospel,

  96. they are now declared righteous legally by God.

  97. They're in right standing with Him.

  98. They were, at one point,

  99. they were without excuse, under God's wrath,

  100. unrighteous in every way,

  101. whether they were a moralist,

  102. or they were a hedonist,

  103. and then God changed them.

  104. Remember this illustration?

  105. Here is you,

  106. with your unrighteousness.

  107. You had a fat list of that.

  108. And God's wrath was over you for that.

  109. And then here's Jesus Christ

  110. with His 33 years of perfect righteousness.

  111. And what God does,

  112. the moment a sinner believes,

  113. is He thinks differently about this.

  114. He considers your righteousness

  115. as now being placed on Christ.

  116. And He applies Christ's death from 2,000 years ago

  117. all the wrath poured out on Christ

  118. is now poured out on Christ

  119. for all of your sin.

  120. So it's completely forgiven.

  121. That's how He thinks about you.

  122. But that's just half that.

  123. Because now, God also thinks of Christ's righteousness

  124. as the fancy word is imputed to you.

  125. It's legally true of you the moment you believe.

  126. All of Christ's righteousness.

  127. And so at that moment,

  128. He sees you and thinks of you

  129. as completely forgiven,

  130. all of His wrath poured out on Christ

  131. for your sake.

  132. And now all of Christ's righteousness

  133. imputed to you.

  134. It's yours now.

  135. And at that moment,

  136. you are justified in His sight

  137. at peace with God.

  138. That's why that verse,

  139. 2 Corinthians 5, 21,

  140. and He, God,

  141. made Him, Jesus,

  142. who knew no sin

  143. to become sin on our behalf,

  144. that we might become

  145. the righteousness of God.

  146. That's what that's talking about.

  147. That's double imputation.

  148. That's the internal workings of justification.

  149. And so,

  150. now,

  151. a justified sinner

  152. has an imputed righteousness

  153. in which they stand.

  154. This doesn't change.

  155. It's a work of God alone.

  156. It's immediate

  157. at the moment you believe.

  158. And it's not just immediate.

  159. What was the word

  160. I wanted there?

  161. Immediate

  162. and

  163. this 51-year-old brain.

  164. It was immediate.

  165. And it was complete.

  166. Because it's

  167. the righteousness of Christ

  168. imputed to you,

  169. there's no more

  170. additional righteousness

  171. of Christ

  172. that needs to be imputed to you.

  173. It's all yours.

  174. It's complete.

  175. The moment you believed.

  176. And therefore,

  177. it's unchanging.

  178. So now,

  179. if I came to Christ

  180. as a 19-year-old,

  181. for the rest of my days

  182. on this planet,

  183. I am fully righteous

  184. in God's sight

  185. because of the finished work

  186. of Christ.

  187. Imputed to me.

  188. Do I have an amen?

  189. Okay.

  190. This is justification.

  191. This happens

  192. the moment

  193. of your salvation.

  194. God alone,

  195. we add nothing to it.

  196. It's immediate,

  197. complete,

  198. unchanging.

  199. For by grace,

  200. you've been saved

  201. through faith.

  202. It's not your own owning.

  203. It's the gift of God.

  204. God.

  205. Now,

  206. when we get to

  207. sanctification,

  208. where justification

  209. is that one-time

  210. legal declaration

  211. of God,

  212. sanctification

  213. is a cooperative

  214. between God

  215. and a justified sinner

  216. in which

  217. we are working together

  218. to work out

  219. what God

  220. has started in us.

  221. It's a process

  222. of being less

  223. and less ruled by sin

  224. and more and more

  225. like Christ

  226. and His holiness.

  227. And so this,

  228. we can call it

  229. practical

  230. or experiential

  231. righteousness.

  232. It's right living,

  233. showing up

  234. day by day

  235. in your life.

  236. It's living for God,

  237. obeying Him.

  238. It's an outworking

  239. of your right standing.

  240. This is right

  241. walking

  242. day by day.

  243. This is the basis

  244. of it all.

  245. You're justified

  246. by God's grace,

  247. period.

  248. This is the outworking

  249. of it.

  250. You are now

  251. walking by God's grace,

  252. dot, dot, dot.

  253. So this is

  254. a cooperative

  255. between God

  256. and the justified,

  257. oh, bad writing,

  258. sinner,

  259. a.k.a. a saint,

  260. where this is immediate,

  261. justification is immediate,

  262. this is ongoing,

  263. where justification

  264. is complete,

  265. you've been given

  266. the full righteousness

  267. of Christ.

  268. This is incomplete

  269. because

  270. it's not until

  271. you are in the very

  272. presence of God,

  273. whether you breathe

  274. your last

  275. or Jesus returns,

  276. that you will now

  277. no longer

  278. need to put sin

  279. to death

  280. and bring to life

  281. what is pleasing

  282. to God.

  283. So you're not

  284. going to be

  285. righteously perfect

  286. this side of glory.

  287. It's incomplete

  288. and therefore

  289. it's changing.

  290. Sanctification is,

  291. some theologians

  292. call it progressive.

  293. It's like the Dow Jones

  294. Industrial Average

  295. over decades

  296. where you're seeing it

  297. gradually increase,

  298. but if you come into

  299. like a three-month period

  300. you see that like

  301. really sharp dips

  302. and rises

  303. and stuff like that,

  304. but the trajectory

  305. over time

  306. is gain.

  307. And so

  308. both are true

  309. of a Christian.

  310. a Christian

  311. the moment they believe

  312. is justified,

  313. that's never going

  314. to change,

  315. it's God alone,

  316. He doesn't revoke it,

  317. and they're being

  318. sanctified,

  319. which is a progress,

  320. progressive,

  321. cooperative with God.

  322. Last week I told you

  323. what happens

  324. when people confuse

  325. these.

  326. Do you know what happens

  327. when someone thinks

  328. that their justification,

  329. your right standing

  330. with God,

  331. depends upon your

  332. sanctification,

  333. your right walking

  334. with God,

  335. do you know what happens?

  336. Misery!

  337. Because you're living

  338. in fear.

  339. Because you think

  340. that your obedience

  341. earns your right standing

  342. with God

  343. and that is just

  344. not biblical.

  345. It's a recipe

  346. for misery.

  347. That's what all

  348. the other religions

  349. in the world

  350. propose.

  351. Our faith,

  352. the Christian faith,

  353. starts with grace

  354. that justifies.

  355. And then it moves

  356. to grace

  357. that sanctifies.

  358. So when you do

  359. get this relationship

  360. clear and right,

  361. now you're positioned

  362. to start putting

  363. sin to death

  364. and bringing to life

  365. godliness,

  366. realizing that

  367. your salvation

  368. doesn't depend on it.

  369. It's not working

  370. of what God

  371. has begun in you.

  372. You guys tracking

  373. with me?

  374. Nods?

  375. Okay.

  376. This,

  377. 20 years ago,

  378. in the life

  379. of Mike Salvati,

  380. rescued me

  381. from a life

  382. of just

  383. heartache

  384. and misery.

  385. I actually thought

  386. my salvation

  387. depended on me.

  388. And it's just

  389. not true.

  390. It's not biblical.

  391. And so when I learned

  392. this,

  393. it was like,

  394. what?

  395. This is God's grace?

  396. It's amazing.

  397. So as a result,

  398. Christian,

  399. you know what you can say?

  400. You're as justified

  401. as you ever will be.

  402. You're as justified

  403. as the Apostle Paul

  404. because you've both

  405. been declared righteous

  406. with the imputed

  407. righteousness

  408. of Jesus Christ.

  409. But when it comes

  410. to our sanctification,

  411. we're working that out.

  412. And some of us

  413. who've been fighting

  414. for a while

  415. are going to be

  416. down the road

  417. a little longer

  418. than some of us

  419. who are just

  420. starting out.

  421. But here's what

  422. I want you to hear.

  423. The grace

  424. that justified you

  425. is the same grace

  426. that is sanctifying you.

  427. The grace

  428. that justified you,

  429. period,

  430. done,

  431. is the grace

  432. that is sanctifying you

  433. ongoingly.

  434. So,

  435. sanctification

  436. is the cooperative

  437. process between

  438. God and a Christian

  439. to be ruled

  440. less and less

  441. by sin

  442. and become more

  443. and more like Christ

  444. in holiness,

  445. day-to-day holiness.

  446. So,

  447. the question now

  448. we've got to ask,

  449. is this biblical?

  450. Do our Bibles

  451. actually teach this?

  452. And that's where

  453. I want you

  454. to turn in your Bibles

  455. to Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6:15–23

  456. verses 15 through 23.

  457. In your pew Bible,

  458. I think it's like

  459. around 1120.

  460. I forgot to check.

  461. 1121.

  462. Thank you, Petey.

  463. I'm going to read

  464. this for us.

  465. Romans 6,

  466. 15 through 23,

  467. Paul makes

  468. a really compelling

  469. case here

  470. and he starts

  471. using a language

  472. he hasn't used yet

  473. in the book of Romans.

  474. Not this explicitly.

  475. What then?

  476. Are we to

  477. sin?

  478. Because we are not

  479. under law

  480. but under grace?

  481. By no means.

  482. Do you not know

  483. that if you present

  484. yourselves to anyone

  485. as obedient slaves,

  486. you are slaves

  487. of the one whom

  488. you obey,

  489. either of sin

  490. which leads to death

  491. or of obedience

  492. which leads to righteousness?

  493. But thanks be to God,

  494. this is the Apostle Paul

  495. writing,

  496. to a church in Rome,

  497. Christians in Rome.

  498. Well, thanks be to God

  499. that you who were

  500. once slaves of sin

  501. have become obedient

  502. from the heart

  503. to the standard of teaching

  504. to which you were committed

  505. and having been set free

  506. from sin

  507. have become slaves

  508. of righteousness.

  509. I'm speaking in human terms

  510. because of your

  511. natural limitations

  512. for just as you once

  513. presented your members

  514. as slaves to impurity

  515. and to lawlessness

  516. leading to more lawlessness,

  517. so now present your members

  518. as slaves to righteousness

  519. leading to sanctification.

  520. For when you were slaves of sin

  521. you were free

  522. in regard to righteousness

  523. but what fruit

  524. were you getting

  525. at that time

  526. from the things

  527. of which you are now ashamed?

  528. For the end of those things

  529. is death.

  530. But now,

  531. now,

  532. that you have been set

  533. free from sin

  534. and have become

  535. slaves of God

  536. the fruit you get

  537. leads to sanctification

  538. and its end

  539. eternal life.

  540. For the wages of sin

  541. is death

  542. but the free gift of God

  543. is eternal life

  544. in Christ Jesus

  545. our Lord.

  546. Is sanctification biblical?

  547. Well,

  548. the word shows up twice

  549. in these verses.

  550. In verse 19,

  551. so now present your members

  552. as slaves to righteousness

  553. leading to sanctification

  554. and then in verse 22,

  555. but now

  556. that you've been set

  557. free from sin

  558. and have become

  559. slaves of God

  560. the fruit you get

  561. leads to

  562. sanctification.

  563. Being less and less

  564. ruled by sin

  565. and becoming more

  566. and more

  567. like Jesus.

  568. In fact,

  569. in 6.4

  570. Paul uses

  571. a very different phrase

  572. to describe sanctification.

  573. It's the last phrase,

  574. we too might walk

  575. in newness of life.

  576. Walk,

  577. live,

  578. carry it out.

  579. Sanctification.

  580. So,

  581. here's what's happening

  582. in Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  583. 15 through 23.

  584. On one level,

  585. it's a simple Q&A.

  586. He asks a question

  587. in verse 15

  588. and 16 through 23

  589. he answers that question.

  590. Very simple.

  591. But what is he addressing?

  592. Paul is seeking

  593. to correct

  594. a possible

  595. misunderstanding

  596. of grace.

  597. Look at verse 14.

  598. For sin will have

  599. no dominion over you

  600. since you are not

  601. under law

  602. but under grace.

  603. And the apostle Paul

  604. knows how people

  605. like us think

  606. under grace.

  607. Did God just write me

  608. a free check to sin?

  609. And so he says,

  610. what then?

  611. Are we to sin?

  612. Go on sinning,

  613. continue in sin

  614. because we're not

  615. under law

  616. but under grace.

  617. If grace is ruling us,

  618. if we're under

  619. the dominion of grace now,

  620. can we sin all we want?

  621. Is being under grace

  622. licensed

  623. to sin?

  624. Well,

  625. what we see here is

  626. his argument is,

  627. no,

  628. grace is not

  629. licensed to sin.

  630. grace trains us

  631. in holiness.

  632. You know,

  633. a lot of evangelicals

  634. think about grace

  635. in terms of

  636. fire extinguisher

  637. from the wrath of God.

  638. True.

  639. They think about grace

  640. as God's safety net.

  641. He'll never let you go.

  642. True.

  643. As God's

  644. kind of

  645. healing balm

  646. on our wounds.

  647. That's true.

  648. But grace is more

  649. than that.

  650. grace is like

  651. the best coach

  652. you will ever have

  653. in your life

  654. who will say,

  655. okay, Mike,

  656. I want you to push

  657. the envelope

  658. of holiness.

  659. You go now, boy!

  660. Grace is muscular.

  661. Grace is gritty.

  662. Grace rescues

  663. and it compels.

  664. And we're going to see

  665. that now played out

  666. with very interesting language.

  667. In 15 through 23,

  668. Paul makes clear

  669. that Christians

  670. are not to use grace

  671. as a license to sin.

  672. Rather,

  673. God's grace

  674. is an empowerment

  675. to obedience.

  676. The grace

  677. that justified you,

  678. Christian,

  679. is the same grace

  680. that is sanctifying you.

  681. So in verse 15,

  682. he starts by saying,

  683. okay,

  684. if we're under grace now,

  685. are we free to sin?

  686. And he says,

  687. by no means.

  688. Salvati translation

  689. is what are you

  690. are you kidding me?

  691. This grace

  692. that you've been

  693. brought under,

  694. you're going to use

  695. that as an excuse

  696. to sin?

  697. Behind this,

  698. Paul knows

  699. that if you think

  700. that about grace,

  701. you've misunderstood grace.

  702. So now he's going

  703. to make a case.

  704. Verse 16,

  705. starting,

  706. verse 16,

  707. he shifts gear.

  708. He's like,

  709. okay,

  710. okay,

  711. I'm guessing

  712. you have a hard time

  713. understanding

  714. what I'm talking about,

  715. being under grace now,

  716. so I'm going to come

  717. at this from a different angle

  718. using kind of language

  719. you're going to understand,

  720. verse 19.

  721. Let's talk slavery.

  722. And Paul's point

  723. in verse 16

  724. is that

  725. you become a slave

  726. to the one

  727. you obey.

  728. If you're presenting

  729. yourself to sin,

  730. you're doing something

  731. that's no longer

  732. true of who you are.

  733. He's now going

  734. to make a case

  735. that grace

  736. has made us

  737. slaves

  738. to righteousness,

  739. to God.

  740. So stop presenting

  741. your members

  742. to slaves

  743. to sin.

  744. That's the argument.

  745. It's like,

  746. do you not know?

  747. Do you not know

  748. that who you present

  749. yourself to

  750. as slaves

  751. you obey?

  752. So in verses 17

  753. through 22,

  754. Paul sets out

  755. to remind

  756. the Christians

  757. in Rome

  758. and the Christians

  759. in Kenosha

  760. of three things.

  761. Who we are now,

  762. what we're to be doing now,

  763. and what is our trajectory

  764. now.

  765. So let me just

  766. draw these out

  767. to you.

  768. There's a device

  769. that he uses

  770. that will help us.

  771. Throughout this passage,

  772. not only is he talking

  773. in slavery,

  774. but he's using

  775. a kind of

  776. a literary device

  777. that is a before

  778. and after technique,

  779. a then and now

  780. technique.

  781. So let me show you.

  782. In verses 17

  783. and 18,

  784. he says,

  785. but thanks be to God

  786. that you

  787. who were once

  788. slaves of sin

  789. before,

  790. have become

  791. now

  792. obedient from the heart

  793. to the standard

  794. of teaching

  795. to which you were

  796. committed.

  797. He's talking about

  798. the apostolic gospel.

  799. Christ,

  800. Jesus,

  801. died and raised

  802. God's kingdom.

  803. And he says,

  804. and having been

  805. set free from sin,

  806. you were a slave

  807. once,

  808. have now become

  809. slaves

  810. of righteousness.

  811. So he's using

  812. this device

  813. of before

  814. and after,

  815. then and now

  816. to help us

  817. understand who we are

  818. in our relationship

  819. to sin.

  820. And did you notice

  821. that little phrase

  822. in verse 17,

  823. have become

  824. obedient from the heart?

  825. Do you know

  826. what that's getting at?

  827. Your conversion.

  828. The moment you got

  829. flipped by God's grace.

  830. The moment you went

  831. from darkness

  832. into light.

  833. The moment you went

  834. from following

  835. the prince of the power

  836. of the air

  837. to now living

  838. for Jesus

  839. because you're

  840. in him now.

  841. You went from

  842. the proxy of Adam

  843. to the proxy

  844. of Christ.

  845. The point he's making

  846. is you were

  847. once slaves

  848. to sin,

  849. but you're slaves

  850. to sin no longer.

  851. You are now

  852. slaves

  853. of righteousness.

  854. Oh, I hope

  855. you are a little

  856. uncomfortable

  857. right now.

  858. Slavery is not

  859. the easiest thing

  860. to talk about,

  861. right?

  862. But here's what

  863. he's getting at.

  864. For many of us

  865. Christians,

  866. we think when we've

  867. been set free,

  868. we've been freed men,

  869. freed women.

  870. Now we can do

  871. whatever we want.

  872. That's not what

  873. he's saying.

  874. What he's saying

  875. is God's grace

  876. transfers you

  877. from one kind

  878. of slavery

  879. to another

  880. kind of slavery.

  881. You used to be

  882. a slave to sin.

  883. Now you're a slave

  884. of righteousness

  885. to God.

  886. God's grace

  887. freed you

  888. from slavery

  889. to sin

  890. so that you can

  891. start obeying God.

  892. God's grace

  893. is not

  894. this is slave

  895. talk.

  896. It's redemption

  897. talk.

  898. It's slave

  899. market talk.

  900. This is talking

  901. about this

  902. process back

  903. in the first

  904. century of

  905. when slaves

  906. would be sold

  907. to slave

  908. masters and

  909. they would go

  910. from being

  911. property of one

  912. to property

  913. of other

  914. to serve.

  915. God's grace

  916. flipped you

  917. brother and

  918. sister.

  919. you used to

  920. be a slave

  921. to sin

  922. and now

  923. you're a slave

  924. of righteousness.

  925. In 1 Corinthians 6

  926. the apostle Paul

  927. is writing this

  928. church in Corinth

  929. and they

  930. were just

  931. messed up.

  932. They had a real

  933. sexual immorality

  934. problem.

  935. And so Paul

  936. writes to them

  937. and he says

  938. to them

  939. you are not

  940. your own.

  941. You were

  942. bought

  943. with a price.

  944. So glorify God

  945. with your body.

  946. It's redemption

  947. language.

  948. It's slave

  949. language.

  950. You're not

  951. your own

  952. anymore.

  953. You never

  954. were.

  955. But you've

  956. been bought

  957. by the blood

  958. of Jesus

  959. and now

  960. you belong

  961. to him.

  962. And now

  963. you use your

  964. body for him

  965. for his fame

  966. for his glory.

  967. And so what

  968. Paul is getting

  969. at here with

  970. all this slave

  971. talk this

  972. before and

  973. after you

  974. were this

  975. now you're

  976. this.

  977. Brother

  978. sister

  979. do you know

  980. why you don't

  981. present your

  982. body to sin

  983. anymore?

  984. You're not

  985. owned by sin

  986. anymore.

  987. You're owned

  988. by Jesus

  989. now.

  990. Property

  991. of

  992. Jesus.

  993. You belong

  994. to him.

  995. He didn't

  996. save you

  997. so that you

  998. can do

  999. anything you

  1000. wanted.

  1001. He saved

  1002. you so that

  1003. you could

  1004. now live

  1005. a life

  1006. for him.

  1007. So this

  1008. passage starts

  1009. out with

  1010. who you

  1011. are now

  1012. as a

  1013. slave of

  1014. righteousness.

  1015. You were

  1016. a slave

  1017. of sin

  1018. now you're

  1019. a slave

  1020. of righteousness.

  1021. And now

  1022. we go to

  1023. what are we

  1024. to be doing

  1025. now?

  1026. Verse 19.

  1027. Verse 19

  1028. after he talks

  1029. about speaking

  1030. in human terms

  1031. because of

  1032. their natural

  1033. limitations

  1034. he says

  1035. for just as

  1036. you once

  1037. presented

  1038. your members

  1039. as slaves

  1040. to impurity

  1041. and to

  1042. lawlessness

  1043. leading more

  1044. lawlessness

  1045. so now

  1046. present your

  1047. members as

  1048. slaves to

  1049. righteousness.

  1050. So there's

  1051. the before

  1052. and after.

  1053. Before

  1054. this is what

  1055. Paul's saying

  1056. hey Romans

  1057. you know

  1058. before you

  1059. became Christians

  1060. you were

  1061. just excellent

  1062. slaves to sin.

  1063. You excelled

  1064. at your slavery

  1065. to sin.

  1066. You just

  1067. presented

  1068. yourself to

  1069. sin and

  1070. impurity

  1071. with just

  1072. exceptional

  1073. force

  1074. and

  1075. consistency.

  1076. and

  1077. then

  1078. he says

  1079. in fact

  1080. you did

  1081. it so

  1082. well

  1083. you went

  1084. from one

  1085. kind of

  1086. lawlessness

  1087. to another

  1088. kind of

  1089. lawlessness.

  1090. You pushed

  1091. the envelope

  1092. of lawlessness.

  1093. You were

  1094. so good

  1095. at sinning

  1096. that you

  1097. blew through

  1098. any kind

  1099. of restriction

  1100. that was

  1101. put on you

  1102. and you

  1103. graduated

  1104. from one

  1105. degree of

  1106. lawlessness

  1107. to the

  1108. next.

  1109. You were

  1110. really good.

  1111. And he

  1112. uses that

  1113. as an

  1114. argument.

  1115. Just as

  1116. you excelled

  1117. at presenting

  1118. yourself as

  1119. slaves to

  1120. sin,

  1121. so now

  1122. present

  1123. yourself

  1124. all in

  1125. as a

  1126. slave

  1127. of

  1128. righteousness.

  1129. All of

  1130. who you

  1131. are

  1132. for all

  1133. of who

  1134. Christ is

  1135. all of

  1136. the time.

  1137. And so

  1138. what are we

  1139. to be doing

  1140. now?

  1141. So now

  1142. present your

  1143. members as

  1144. slaves to

  1145. righteousness

  1146. leading to

  1147. sanctification.

  1148. Because you're

  1149. now, by

  1150. God's grace,

  1151. a slave to

  1152. God and

  1153. righteousness,

  1154. now what you

  1155. do is present

  1156. your members

  1157. to him,

  1158. leading to

  1159. sanctification.

  1160. Less and

  1161. less ruled by

  1162. sin, more

  1163. and more

  1164. like Christ.

  1165. And so now,

  1166. do you know

  1167. what envelope

  1168. we push,

  1169. Christian?

  1170. we push

  1171. the envelope

  1172. of holiness.

  1173. We press

  1174. into becoming

  1175. more like

  1176. Christ in

  1177. what we

  1178. crave, in

  1179. our character,

  1180. in our

  1181. conduct.

  1182. We seek

  1183. to, by

  1184. God's grace,

  1185. push into

  1186. greater degrees

  1187. of holiness,

  1188. to excel

  1189. at that,

  1190. to prioritize

  1191. that.

  1192. That's what we

  1193. do now.

  1194. Grace is

  1195. not an

  1196. excuse to

  1197. sin.

  1198. Grace

  1199. compels us

  1200. to holiness

  1201. because you

  1202. now are a

  1203. slave of

  1204. God.

  1205. The last

  1206. piece, he's

  1207. told us who

  1208. we are now

  1209. and what we're

  1210. to be doing

  1211. now,

  1212. sanctification,

  1213. presenting our

  1214. bodies to

  1215. God, to

  1216. righteousness.

  1217. And finally,

  1218. in verses 20

  1219. and 22,

  1220. he reminds

  1221. us of our

  1222. trajectory now.

  1223. And again,

  1224. there's the

  1225. before and

  1226. after.

  1227. Look at

  1228. verse 20.

  1229. Before, when

  1230. you were

  1231. slaves of

  1232. God, you

  1233. were free

  1234. in regard

  1235. to righteousness.

  1236. In other

  1237. words, you

  1238. were not a

  1239. slave of

  1240. righteousness,

  1241. you were

  1242. not a

  1243. slave of

  1244. God, you

  1245. were dead

  1246. to God

  1247. and alive

  1248. to sin

  1249. outside of

  1250. Christ Jesus.

  1251. But now,

  1252. that has

  1253. changed.

  1254. Look at

  1255. verse 21.

  1256. He uses

  1257. the word

  1258. fruit.

  1259. When you

  1260. were a

  1261. slave to

  1262. sin,

  1263. what fruit

  1264. were you

  1265. getting at

  1266. that time

  1267. from the

  1268. things of

  1269. which you

  1270. are now

  1271. ashamed?

  1272. Fruit is

  1273. talking about

  1274. the produce

  1275. of your

  1276. sinning.

  1277. When you

  1278. were sowing

  1279. to sin,

  1280. you were

  1281. reaping things

  1282. that you're

  1283. now ashamed

  1284. of.

  1285. He's like

  1286. saying, hey,

  1287. do you remember

  1288. back in the

  1289. day, in the

  1290. years, the

  1291. slave to sin

  1292. years?

  1293. Do you

  1294. remember what

  1295. you were

  1296. doing?

  1297. And you

  1298. remember how

  1299. ashamed of

  1300. that you're

  1301. now?

  1302. It's not

  1303. like back

  1304. in the

  1305. slave to

  1306. sin years,

  1307. you were

  1308. now eager

  1309. to tell

  1310. your kids

  1311. about that

  1312. time, eager

  1313. to post on

  1314. Facebook for

  1315. everybody to

  1316. see.

  1317. It's kind

  1318. of like that

  1319. phrase you

  1320. hear about

  1321. Las Vegas,

  1322. what happens

  1323. in Las Vegas

  1324. stays in

  1325. Las Vegas.

  1326. It's kind

  1327. of like, hey,

  1328. what happened

  1329. back in the

  1330. slave to sin

  1331. years, it's

  1332. going to, I

  1333. don't want to

  1334. talk about

  1335. those years

  1336. because I'm

  1337. ashamed of

  1338. those now.

  1339. And that

  1340. fruit that

  1341. you were

  1342. bearing, you

  1343. were sowing to

  1344. sin and you

  1345. were reaping

  1346. things that

  1347. look at the

  1348. end of verse

  1349. 21.

  1350. For the

  1351. end, the

  1352. telos of

  1353. those things

  1354. is death,

  1355. spiritual death,

  1356. without excuse,

  1357. under God's

  1358. wrath, judgment,

  1359. condemnation.

  1360. That's what that

  1361. was waiting.

  1362. that's who

  1363. you were

  1364. doing those

  1365. kinds of

  1366. things.

  1367. You're not

  1368. proud of

  1369. those now.

  1370. You know, if

  1371. you open up

  1372. your Bible, I'll

  1373. just read this

  1374. to you.

  1375. Back in the

  1376. slave to sin

  1377. years, you

  1378. were just

  1379. reaping all

  1380. sorts of

  1381. works of the

  1382. flesh.

  1383. Now, the

  1384. works of the

  1385. flesh, Galatians

  1386. 5, 19,

  1387. are evident.

  1388. Sexual

  1389. immorality,

  1390. that was

  1391. me.

  1392. Impurity,

  1393. sensuality,

  1394. idolatry,

  1395. check,

  1396. sorcery,

  1397. enmity,

  1398. strife,

  1399. definitely,

  1400. jealousy, for

  1401. sure, fits of

  1402. anger, a lot,

  1403. rivalries, yes,

  1404. dissensions,

  1405. divisions,

  1406. envy, uh-huh,

  1407. drunkenness, not

  1408. so much,

  1409. orgies, and

  1410. things like

  1411. these.

  1412. you want to

  1413. go post those

  1414. on Facebook?

  1415. You're ashamed

  1416. of those things

  1417. now.

  1418. Why would you

  1419. ever go back

  1420. to giving

  1421. yourself to

  1422. those things?

  1423. That's who you

  1424. were.

  1425. Look at verse

  1426. 22.

  1427. but now

  1428. that you've

  1429. been set free

  1430. from sin and

  1431. have become

  1432. slaves of God.

  1433. There's this

  1434. great redemptive

  1435. work of grace

  1436. in which he

  1437. flipped you.

  1438. fruit.

  1439. And he says,

  1440. the fruit you

  1441. get, same

  1442. word, fruit,

  1443. that you get

  1444. now, it's

  1445. not the stay

  1446. in Vegas

  1447. stuff.

  1448. It's the stuff

  1449. that you don't

  1450. need to be ashamed

  1451. of.

  1452. It's the stuff

  1453. that pleases

  1454. God.

  1455. For the fruit of

  1456. the Spirit is

  1457. love, joy,

  1458. peace,

  1459. patience,

  1460. kindness,

  1461. goodness,

  1462. gentleness,

  1463. faithfulness,

  1464. self-control.

  1465. Against such

  1466. things there is

  1467. no law.

  1468. God delights

  1469. in these things.

  1470. You don't have

  1471. to be ashamed

  1472. of these things

  1473. now.

  1474. This is the

  1475. fruit of

  1476. sanctification.

  1477. You're being

  1478. less and less

  1479. ruled by sin

  1480. and becoming

  1481. more and more

  1482. like Christ

  1483. because that

  1484. fruit of the

  1485. Spirit forms

  1486. a profile of

  1487. Jesus.

  1488. You want to

  1489. be like him.

  1490. And the end

  1491. of that,

  1492. the telos of

  1493. that is

  1494. eternal life.

  1495. That's the

  1496. trajectory we're

  1497. on,

  1498. brothers and

  1499. sisters.

  1500. We're on the

  1501. grace trajectory

  1502. of becoming

  1503. more and more

  1504. holy which

  1505. results in

  1506. eternal life

  1507. because we've

  1508. been justified

  1509. by his grace.

  1510. We've been

  1511. united with

  1512. Christ in his

  1513. death and

  1514. resurrection.

  1515. We've been

  1516. redeemed.

  1517. So we don't

  1518. go back to

  1519. that stuff.

  1520. life.

  1521. You're no

  1522. longer a

  1523. slave to

  1524. sin but a

  1525. slave to

  1526. God on a

  1527. grace trajectory.

  1528. The fruit is

  1529. sanctification and

  1530. the end is

  1531. eternal life.

  1532. That's who you

  1533. are now.

  1534. Period.

  1535. So Paul's

  1536. making this

  1537. argument in

  1538. Romans 6,

  1539. 15 through

  1540. 23.

  1541. It's like,

  1542. hey, you

  1543. know what?

  1544. We're not,

  1545. we don't come

  1546. under grace so

  1547. that we can

  1548. keep sinning.

  1549. No, it's not

  1550. who we are

  1551. anymore.

  1552. We're slaves of

  1553. God, slaves of

  1554. righteousness.

  1555. What we do now

  1556. is offer our

  1557. bodies to him

  1558. unto sanctification,

  1559. holiness, and

  1560. we are on a

  1561. whole new

  1562. trajectory.

  1563. We're going to

  1564. glory.

  1565. And so we live

  1566. like that now.

  1567. The point is,

  1568. is that we don't

  1569. offer ourselves

  1570. to sin anymore

  1571. because we're now

  1572. slaves of God.

  1573. It's all by his

  1574. grace.

  1575. And at the

  1576. heart of this,

  1577. what flipped

  1578. the script

  1579. is the

  1580. redemptive work

  1581. of God

  1582. in Christ Jesus

  1583. for you.

  1584. He bought you

  1585. with his blood.

  1586. You are not

  1587. your own.

  1588. You've been

  1589. purchased by the

  1590. blood of Christ.

  1591. So present

  1592. yourself

  1593. to God

  1594. as slaves

  1595. of righteousness.

  1596. Anybody

  1597. asking,

  1598. how do I do

  1599. that?

  1600. What does that

  1601. look like?

  1602. How can I

  1603. present myself

  1604. to God

  1605. day in,

  1606. day out

  1607. as a slave

  1608. of righteousness?

  1609. Well,

  1610. let me tell you.

  1611. Doctrine

  1612. applied.

  1613. Would you

  1614. quickly look

  1615. at Titus

    Titus 2:11–14

  1616. chapter 2

  1617. verses 11

  1618. through 14?

  1619. Listen to

  1620. this.

  1621. As my friend

  1622. says,

  1623. peep this.

  1624. Look at that.

  1625. for the grace

  1626. of God

  1627. has appeared,

  1628. bringing salvation

  1629. for all people,

  1630. training us.

  1631. The grace

  1632. of God

  1633. is training

  1634. us

  1635. to renounce

  1636. ungodliness

  1637. and worldly

  1638. passions

  1639. and to live

  1640. self-controlled,

  1641. upright,

  1642. and godly lives

  1643. in the present

  1644. age now,

  1645. waiting for our

  1646. blessed hope,

  1647. the appearing of

  1648. the glory of

  1649. our great God

  1650. and Savior,

  1651. Jesus Christ,

  1652. who gave

  1653. himself for us

  1654. to redeem us

  1655. from all

  1656. lawlessness

  1657. and to purify

  1658. for himself

  1659. a people

  1660. for his own

  1661. possessions

  1662. who are zealous

  1663. for good works.

  1664. You're in

  1665. grace training,

  1666. brother and

  1667. sister in Christ.

  1668. When you

  1669. were flipped

  1670. by God's grace,

  1671. you went into

  1672. grace training.

  1673. The grace

  1674. that justified

  1675. you, period,

  1676. is the same grace

  1677. that is making

  1678. you holy,

  1679. dot, dot, dot.

  1680. It's training

  1681. you.

  1682. It's going to

  1683. train you in

  1684. two ways,

  1685. a holy mindset

  1686. and a holy

  1687. skill set.

  1688. Here's the

  1689. holy mindset.

  1690. The holy

  1691. mindset is a

  1692. way of

  1693. thinking about

  1694. yourself through

  1695. the lens of

  1696. the Bible.

  1697. This morning's

  1698. passage calls

  1699. you Christian

  1700. to believe

  1701. something about

  1702. yourself.

  1703. It calls you

  1704. to trust in

  1705. God's word,

  1706. what God's word

  1707. is saying about

  1708. you more

  1709. than how you

  1710. feel about

  1711. yourself.

  1712. You are a

  1713. slave of God

  1714. now, a slave

  1715. to righteousness.

  1716. That's what

  1717. God's word

  1718. says.

  1719. He bought

  1720. me, he

  1721. bought you

  1722. with his

  1723. blood.

  1724. It's done.

  1725. I'm his.

  1726. You're his.

  1727. And so now

  1728. call to mind

  1729. the sin that

  1730. you're tempted

  1731. to present

  1732. yourself to.

  1733. What did I

  1734. just get hooked

  1735. on?

  1736. Call to

  1737. mind that

  1738. sin that you

  1739. regularly offer

  1740. your body to,

  1741. your mind to,

  1742. and bring it

  1743. against that

  1744. mindset.

  1745. So when you're

  1746. tempted to

  1747. obey the

  1748. passions of

  1749. lust and greed

  1750. and pride and

  1751. anger and

  1752. anxiety and

  1753. fear, you say

  1754. to yourself,

  1755. but that's not

  1756. who I am.

  1757. These things do

  1758. not rule me

  1759. based upon the

  1760. authority of

  1761. God's word.

  1762. this is not

  1763. me anymore.

  1764. This is that

  1765. tyrant kind

  1766. of making

  1767. things messy

  1768. in me.

  1769. And so now

  1770. Titus 2.11,

  1771. I renounce

  1772. these things.

  1773. I say no to

  1774. these things.

  1775. I say to my

  1776. sin, you don't

  1777. own me anymore.

  1778. Jesus does.

  1779. You know how

  1780. to do that?

  1781. You get your

  1782. nose in your

  1783. Bible every

  1784. day.

  1785. So if you

  1786. think, you

  1787. know what, I

  1788. should be

  1789. reading my

  1790. Bible because

  1791. other Christians

  1792. read their

  1793. Bible, that's

  1794. going to last

  1795. like two days.

  1796. When you start

  1797. seeing it this

  1798. way, I've got

  1799. to read my

  1800. Bible, otherwise

  1801. I am going to

  1802. drift back into

  1803. some kind of

  1804. slavery to sin.

  1805. Do you know

  1806. why I read my

  1807. Bible?

  1808. I miss two

  1809. days and all of

  1810. a sudden I'm

  1811. walking by sight,

  1812. not by faith.

  1813. I forget who

  1814. I am.

  1815. I forget who

  1816. so I read a

  1817. passage like

  1818. Romans 6 and

  1819. I say, yes, this

  1820. is God's grace.

  1821. This is who I

  1822. am now.

  1823. So brother and

  1824. sister, one of

  1825. the things that

  1826. you can do to

  1827. develop this

  1828. mindset is to

  1829. renew your mind

  1830. on truth of who

  1831. God says you are

  1832. by His grace.

  1833. You stand on it.

  1834. That will help

  1835. you fight.

  1836. God.

  1837. That's grace

  1838. training.

  1839. Training your

  1840. mind to

  1841. believe what

  1842. is true of

  1843. you.

  1844. The second

  1845. type of

  1846. training is a

  1847. grace, a

  1848. holy skill set.

  1849. I alluded to

  1850. this last week.

  1851. It is the two

  1852. aspects of

  1853. sanctification.

  1854. It's putting

  1855. sin to death

  1856. and bringing to

  1857. life godliness.

  1858. Godliness.

  1859. The old

  1860. timers would

  1861. call it the

  1862. mortification of

  1863. sin, mortify,

  1864. mortician, death,

  1865. and bringing to

  1866. life, vivifying

  1867. godliness.

  1868. So let me help

  1869. you take a step

  1870. in each of

  1871. mortifying your

  1872. sin because you're

  1873. a slave of

  1874. righteousness now.

  1875. It doesn't

  1876. rule.

  1877. You've got to

  1878. slay that tyrant

  1879. wreaking havoc in

  1880. your life.

  1881. The old

  1882. timers, here's

  1883. where to start.

  1884. How to mortify

  1885. your sin.

  1886. This is where it

  1887. begins.

  1888. Pick that thing

  1889. that you're

  1890. tempted to give

  1891. yourself to and

  1892. start here.

  1893. The old timers

  1894. called it loading

  1895. your sin.

  1896. You're loading

  1897. your sin with

  1898. the way that God

  1899. sees your sin and

  1900. feels about your

  1901. sin.

  1902. I am going to

  1903. seed my lust the

  1904. way that God

  1905. through his word

  1906. tells me he sees

  1907. my lust and how

  1908. he feels about my

  1909. lust.

  1910. I'm going to

  1911. load my sin

  1912. that way.

  1913. I'm going to

  1914. talk about lust in

  1915. terms of Matthew

  1916. 5, 28.

  1917. I'm going to talk

  1918. about greed in

  1919. terms of Colossians

  1920. 3, 5.

  1921. I'm going to talk

  1922. about anxiety in

  1923. terms of Philippians

  1924. 4, 6.

  1925. I'm going to talk

  1926. about fear of man

  1927. in terms of

  1928. Proverbs 29, 25.

  1929. The anger of man

  1930. in terms of James

  1931. 1, 19 through 20.

  1932. I'm going to talk

  1933. about the sins of

  1934. my mouth in terms

  1935. of James 3, 1

  1936. through 12.

1937. I am going to see

  1938. these things the

  1939. way that God sees

  1940. them.

  1941. That's loading your

  1942. sin.

  1943. And you know what

  1944. happens?

  1945. You start to hate

  1946. it.

  1947. You're like,

  1948. this does not

  1949. belong here.

  1950. This is grievous

  1951. to my God.

  1952. What fruit will this

  1953. produce?

  1954. What end does this

  1955. result in?

  1956. Would Jesus do this?

  1957. How does this

  1958. affect others?

  1959. Does this advance

  1960. the gospel?

  1961. Will I be ashamed

  1962. of this?

  1963. These are the things

  1964. that we ask to

  1965. load our sin.

  1966. And we're praying

  1967. all along,

  1968. oh God,

  1969. would you help me

  1970. to see this thing

  1971. in me the way

  1972. that you do?

  1973. And would you make

  1974. me feel about this

  1975. thing the way

  1976. that you do?

  1977. You're going to

  1978. have some compelling

  1979. reasons at that

  1980. point to renounce

  1981. it.

  1982. To say no.

  1983. If there was a

  1984. mic in my car

  1985. while I'm driving,

  1986. you'd hear me say

  1987. no a lot.

  1988. No, I'm not

  1989. going to think

  1990. that.

  1991. No, I'm not

  1992. going to go

  1993. there.

  1994. No, that's

  1995. not who I am.

  1996. That's how we

  1997. fight.

  1998. It's part of

  1999. the Christian

  2000. walk now.

  2001. We fight

  2002. sin,

  2003. not give

  2004. ourselves to it.

  2005. The other

  2006. side of this

  2007. is called

  2008. vivification,

  2009. bringing to

  2010. life.

  2011. Putting off

  2012. mortification,

  2013. putting on

  2014. vivification.

  2015. And so here's

  2016. how that works.

  2017. So if you

  2018. lust,

  2019. you're putting

  2020. that to death

  2021. and now you've

  2022. got to bring

  2023. something to life

  2024. in its place.

  2025. Something that

  2026. pleases God.

  2027. Oftentimes if

  2028. you're a brother

  2029. who is looking

  2030. lustfully at

  2031. women,

  2032. what you need

  2033. to do is

  2034. put on image

  2035. bearing,

  2036. dignifying,

  2037. seeing a

  2038. woman as

  2039. God sees

  2040. her.

  2041. You're asking

  2042. the question,

  2043. what would

  2044. God want to

  2045. grow in the

  2046. place of

  2047. this sin

  2048. that I'm

  2049. putting to

  2050. death?

  2051. What fruit

  2052. of the

  2053. spirit?

  2054. What craving

  2055. and desire

  2056. that would be

  2057. pleasing to

  2058. God?

  2059. What character

  2060. trait,

  2061. what conduct

  2062. needs to be

  2063. now grown

  2064. in me?

  2065. God help

  2066. me become

  2067. like Jesus.

  2068. Kill these

  2069. things and

  2070. bring to

  2071. life Christ

  2072. likeness.

  2073. Okay,

  2074. I'm going to

  2075. give you two

  2076. strategies.

  2077. You've been

  2078. great.

  2079. Two strategies

  2080. that apply to

  2081. both.

  2082. You're going to

  2083. want, if you're

  2084. taking notes,

  2085. put down 2

  2086. Corinthians 3

  2087. 18.

  2088. Beholding

  2089. the Lord

  2090. Jesus Christ.

  2091. Beholding the

  2092. glory of God,

  2093. we are being

  2094. transformed from

  2095. one degree of

  2096. glory to the

  2097. next.

  2098. You know one of

  2099. the best things

  2100. that you can

  2101. do to slay

  2102. your sin and

  2103. to bring to

  2104. life Christ

  2105. likeness?

  2106. Set your

  2107. gaze on

  2108. Jesus.

  2109. Be awed

  2110. by Him.

  2111. Be amazed

  2112. by Him.

  2113. Just savor,

  2114. behold His

  2115. glory.

  2116. And you know

  2117. what?

  2118. That godly

  2119. desire starts

  2120. to crowd

  2121. out sinful

  2122. desires.

  2123. The second

  2124. thing I would

  2125. recommend,

  2126. bring in

  2127. like-minded

  2128. brothers and

  2129. sisters.

  2130. There's

  2131. little to

  2132. compare to

  2133. fight sin by

  2134. bringing brothers

  2135. and sisters whom

  2136. you trust in in

  2137. the process.

  2138. I called a

  2139. couple brothers,

  2140. had conversations

  2141. a couple weeks

  2142. ago.

  2143. I was being

  2144. tempted to lust.

  2145. I'm like,

  2146. here's the

  2147. situation.

  2148. And man,

  2149. they helped me

  2150. so much.

  2151. It was just

  2152. so helpful

  2153. talking to

  2154. Him about

  2155. it.

  2156. Bringing it

  2157. into the

  2158. light.

  2159. Walk in

  2160. the light.

  2161. Who can

  2162. you confide

  2163. your fight

  2164. to sin

  2165. with?

  2166. Not only

  2167. will you

  2168. grow in

  2169. your

  2170. sanctification,

  2171. it will

  2172. raise the

  2173. bar.

  2174. Okay.

  2175. I even

  2176. cut down

  2177. this sermon.

  2178. Man,

  2179. I started

  2180. to go

  2181. long.

  2182. Let me

  2183. wrap it

  2184. up.

  2185. Justification.

  2186. God's

  2187. legal one-time

  2188. declaration of

  2189. you that you

  2190. are in

  2191. right standing

  2192. with Him

  2193. based on the

  2194. finished work

  2195. of Christ,

  2196. that doesn't

  2197. change.

  2198. You are in

  2199. right standing

  2200. Christian with

  2201. God.

  2202. If you're not

  2203. a Christian,

  2204. that's the

  2205. next step.

  2206. Believe in

  2207. what God has

  2208. done through

  2209. Jesus and be

  2210. saved.

  2211. Sanctification

  2212. is the

  2213. cooperative between

  2214. God and a

  2215. Christian to

  2216. become more

  2217. and more like

  2218. Christ, to be

  2219. less and less

  2220. ruled by sin.

  2221. And we all

  2222. know there's

  2223. this gap between

  2224. our imputed

  2225. righteousness and

  2226. our experiential

  2227. righteousness.

  2228. Amen?

  2229. Let me close

  2230. with some good

  2231. news.

  2232. We're one day

  2233. closer.

  2234. When Jesus

  2235. comes back and

  2236. all the dead

  2237. are raised and

  2238. He distributes

  2239. our resurrection

  2240. bodies back,

  2241. and yes,

  2242. the penalty of

  2243. sin is paid

  2244. for, and yes,

  2245. the power of

  2246. sin is broken,

  2247. but you know

  2248. what's going

  2249. to be amazing?

  2250. The presence

  2251. of sin will

  2252. be eradicated.

  2253. And now,

  2254. our experience

  2255. is going to

  2256. match our

  2257. legal standing.

  2258. Is that good

  2259. news?

  2260. It's one day

  2261. closer.

  2262. So now,

  2263. we fight.

  2264. Let's pray.

  2265. God in heaven,

  2266. would you take

  2267. my fish and

  2268. loaves of

  2269. your word,

  2270. and would you

  2271. multiply,

  2272. and would you

  2273. attend to my

  2274. brothers and

  2275. sisters,

  2276. and that,

  2277. God, you would

  2278. stir in them

  2279. a hunger and

  2280. thirst for your

  2281. righteousness,

  2282. a boldness

  2283. and a courage

  2284. to fight and

  2285. slay sin,

  2286. and to become

  2287. more and more

  2288. like Christ.

  2289. Christ.

  2290. Thank you,

  2291. God, for your

  2292. justifying work

  2293. with which you've

  2294. done by your

  2295. grace for us,

  2296. and now pour out

  2297. your grace more

  2298. and more,

  2299. that we would

  2300. become more and

  2301. more like Christ

  2302. in all that we

  2303. do.

  2304. Amen.
