  1. What makes us unclean in God's sight?

  2. What makes us unclean in God's sight?

  3. The Bible talks about sin in a variety of different ways.

  4. False worship, idolatry, rebellion, losing your way.

  5. It talks about sin as sickness, as crossing a line, as missing the mark, as a stain, dirty

  6. or unclean.

  7. And we're going to be looking at a passage in Mark chapter 7 verses 1 through 23 in which

    Mark 7:1–23

  8. Jesus speaks about sin as that which defiles someone in God's sight.

  9. Sin is something that's morally unclean, something that is morally dirty in God's sight.

  10. The opposite of moral defilement is moral purity which is another way of talking about holiness.

  11. So the question being asked in Mark chapter 7 verses 1 through 23 is what actually defiles

    Mark 7:1–23

  12. a human being in God's sight?

  13. What makes us dirty in His eyes?

  14. What makes us unclean in His sight?

  15. Now if I were to ask you, why do you sin?

  16. I'm guessing many of you would be able to give me a really concise answer.

  17. Something like this.

  18. Well Pastor Mike, I still sin because sin is still in me.

  19. Even as a Christian, I am simultaneously justified and yet sinful.

  20. I've got these sinful desires coming up from my flesh even though the Spirit has given me

  21. a new heart.

  22. But even though you might be theologically precise in that, there's another question related to

  23. this that's a little bit more difficult to answer.

  24. How are you at owning your sin?

  25. How are you at taking responsibility for your sin?

  26. If you're like me, I know not all of you are like me.

  27. But if you're like me in this way, I tend to be slow to take responsibility for my sin

  28. and I am really quick at blaming others for my sin.

  29. The devil made me do it.

  30. The world made me do it.

  31. This person that sinned against me made me do it.

  32. But here's the deal with all that.

  33. This blame shifting that we're so prone to.

  34. Even if there was no devil, I would still be sinning.

  35. Even if we were not living in the world, I would still be sinning.

  36. So would you.

  37. Even if no one else ever sinned against me, I'd still be a sinner.

  38. This is a classic and common mistake that we make.

  39. We tend to push the blame of our sin outside of us.

  40. And today Jesus blows it all up.

  41. He's going to say the evil that defiles us.

  42. Well, it doesn't come from outside of us.

  43. The evil that defiles us, that makes us dirty in God's sight,

  44. it actually comes from within us.

  45. We are defiled not from the outside in,

  46. but from the inside out.

  47. Chapter 7, verses 1-23.

  48. You can break them into two sections.

  49. Verses 1-13.

  50. There's a Q&A with Jesus.

  51. It's the questions asked by Pharisees and scribes,

  52. and Jesus answers it.

  53. And then in verses 14-23,

  54. there's another Q&A with Jesus,

  55. but it's His disciples asking Him the question,

  56. and Jesus answers it.

  57. The first set of questions,

  58. Jesus exposes a mistake of thinking

  59. that we're defiled from the outside in.

  60. And then in the latter part,

  61. He corrects it.

  62. And He explains it,

  63. and He helps us to see that we are defiled in God's sight

  64. from the inside out.

  65. As Thomas Watson has said,

  66. Till sin be bitter,

  67. Christ will not be sweet.

  68. So let's open our hearts

  69. to what our Lord Jesus has to say.

  70. You're going to need to behold your King this morning,

  71. because He speaks with authority and clarity

  72. on something that we all must hear.

  73. And the question is,

  74. is it true or not?

  75. So would you look at verses 1-13 in chapter 7?

  76. I'm going to read through them.

  77. It's Q&A with these religious leaders.

  78. Now when the Pharisees gathered to Him,

  79. Jesus,

  80. with some of the scribes

  81. who had come from Jerusalem,

  82. they saw that some of His disciples

  83. ate with hands that were defiled,

  84. that is, unwashed.

  85. For the Pharisees and all the Jews

  86. do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,

  87. holding to the tradition of the elders.

  88. And when they come from the marketplace,

  89. they do not eat unless they wash.

  90. And there are many other traditions

  91. that they observe,

  92. such as the washing of cups and pots

  93. and copper vessels and dining couches.

  94. And the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus,

  95. Why do your disciples not walk

  96. according to the tradition of the elders,

  97. but eat with defiled hands?

  98. And Jesus said to them,

  99. Well, did Isaiah prophesy of you, hypocrites?

  100. As it is written,

  101. This people honors Me with their lips,

  102. but their heart is far from Me.

  103. In vain do they worship Me,

  104. teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

  105. You have the commandment of God,

  106. and you leave the commandment of God,

  107. and hold to the tradition of men.

  108. And then He said to them,

  109. You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God

  110. in order to establish your tradition.

  111. For Moses said,

  112. Honor your father and your mother,

  113. and whoever reviles father or mother

  114. must surely die.

  115. But you say,

  116. If a man tells his father or his mother,

  117. Whatever you would have gained from Me

  118. is Corban,

  119. that is given to God,

  120. then you no longer permit Him

  121. to do anything for his father or mother.

  122. Thus, making the void,

  123. the Word of God,

  124. by your tradition that you've handed down.

  125. And many such things you do.

  126. In verses 1-13,

  127. Jesus has this very sharp interaction

  128. with the Jewish religious leaders in Israel.

  129. Some Pharisees and scribes

  130. have observed Jesus' disciples

  131. doing something in that culture

  132. would have been very peculiar.

  133. They were eating,

  134. some of His disciples were eating food

  135. without washing their hands.

  136. So, the Pharisees and the scribes

  137. asked Jesus,

  138. What's going on here?

  139. And then Jesus answers them

  140. with a very sharp rebuke.

  141. There's a question and an answer.

  142. The question is in verse 5,

  143. and the answer is in verses 6-13.

  144. But preceding the question,

  145. is some peculiar activity.

  146. In verse 2,

  147. these Pharisees and scribes,

  148. they observed something

  149. that's peculiar.

  150. What is it?

  151. Some of Jesus' Pharisees

  152. were eating without washing their hands.

  153. And you might be thinking,

  154. what's the big deal?

  155. I mean, I had a meal this week

  156. and I didn't wash my hands before I ate.

  157. What's the big deal with that?

  158. Well, the big deal is represented

  159. in a little word.

  160. It's in verse 2.

  161. They saw that some of His disciples

  162. ate with hands that were defiled.

  163. The Pharisees and the scribes

  164. weren't physical hygiene police.

  165. They were morality police.

  166. And they had observed

  167. a big moral no-no

  168. among some of Jesus' disciples.

  169. They were eating without washed hands.

  170. And they had made themselves,

  171. in their opinion,

  172. spiritually unclean.

  173. Now you may be asking,

  174. well, how does that work?

  175. Well, Mark tells us how that works.

  176. In verses 3 and 4,

  177. you see how it's in parentheses?

  178. He's anticipating Gentiles like us

  179. need a little bit more information.

  180. And so what Mark does

  181. in verses 3 and 4

  182. is he kind of spells out

  183. the extent of all this washing.

  184. We read

  185. that the Pharisees and all the Jews,

  186. so this is a cultural norm.

  187. They do not eat

  188. unless they wash their hands.

  189. Every meal,

  190. they've got to wash their hands

  191. a certain way.

  192. Every meal,

  193. it has to be done

  194. a certain way.

  195. And so there's this frequency

  196. to this.

  197. It's happening

  198. all the time.

  199. And it's not just frequency

  200. dealing with

  201. kind of like what you eat.

  202. It's where you come from.

  203. Did you see that?

  204. So,

  205. in verse 4,

  206. when they come from the marketplace,

  207. the agora,

  208. from meyer,

  209. from woodman's,

  210. you've got to wash

  211. a certain way

  212. before you would even eat again

  213. because you were there.

  214. So it's just not every meal.

  215. You've got to be paying attention

  216. to where you come from.

  217. And it's not just

  218. having your meals

  219. and where you come from.

  220. Look at the scope of this

  221. at the end of verse 4.

  222. Such as the washing,

  223. so there were many other traditions

  224. such as the washing of cups,

  225. pots,

  226. copper vessels,

  227. and dining couches.

  228. Not only were they

  229. washing their hands

  230. and coming from meyer

  231. and having to wash,

  232. but they were also

  233. having to be washing

  234. what they made their food in,

  235. what they presented their food in,

  236. and what they sat on

  237. when they ate their food.

  238. So what we're seeing here

  239. is this like extent

  240. of this washing.

  241. The idea behind it was this.

  242. That defilement

  243. was transmitted,

  244. transferred by touch.

  245. And so to stop

  246. the transmission of defilement,

  247. you've got to do a lot of washing.

  248. Has anybody heard of the phrase

  249. OCD?

  250. Obsessive-compulsive disorder?

  251. This is O-C-W-D.

  252. Obsessive-compulsive

  253. washing disorder.

  254. They had created

  255. these layers upon layers

  256. of washing

  257. in order to keep

  258. in order to keep

  259. the defilement

  260. from the outside

  261. from getting

  262. into the inside.

  263. And if you notice

  264. in verse 3,

  265. the Pharisees

  266. and all the Jews

  267. practiced these things.

  268. It was a cultural norm.

  269. You would have grown up in it.

  270. You know,

  271. you might be asking,

  272. hey, where did all this come from?

  273. What authority

  274. is driving this?

  275. And you see it

  276. referenced twice.

  277. It's the tradition

  278. of the elders

  279. in verse 3

  280. and in the question

  281. in verse 5.

  282. Why do disciples

  283. not walk according

  284. to the tradition

  285. of the elders?

  286. The tradition

  287. of the elders

  288. was this,

  289. these applications

  290. that rabbis

  291. had come up with

  292. over the centuries.

  293. They would take

  294. God's commands

  295. commands,

  296. and then they would

  297. think through

  298. how to apply it

  299. to every possible

  300. situation

  301. that they could imagine.

  302. Every possible situation.

  303. And so,

  304. over time,

  305. it became an oral tradition

  306. and it started

  307. to become more

  308. and more authoritative.

  309. And then it took

  310. a written form

  311. called the Mishnah.

  312. And so,

  313. all of a sudden,

  314. what you have over time

  315. is this new

  316. competing authority

  317. with God's commands

  318. that have been

  319. made up by man

  320. in order to apply

  321. God's law

  322. to people's lives.

  323. But,

  324. it wasn't

  325. the Word of God.

  326. It wasn't

  327. the Torah.

  328. And over centuries,

  329. what happens

  330. is these

  331. traditions

  332. become treated

  333. as if

  334. they were

  335. God's law.

  336. And

  337. the whole reason

  338. why is

  339. they didn't want

  340. to be defiled.

  341. Because they thought

  342. defilement

  343. came from the

  344. outside in.

  345. They had built

  346. all these rules

  347. to keep it out.

  348. It's a man-made

  349. system

  350. being treated

  351. as

  352. coming from God

  353. when it wasn't.

  354. So,

  355. are you starting

  356. to understand

  357. what's behind

  358. the question

  359. in verse 5?

  360. Jesus,

  361. why do your

  362. disciples not walk

  363. according to the

  364. tradition of the

  365. elders

  366. like the rest

  367. of us?

  368. Why are you

  369. letting your

  370. disciples

  371. become unclean?

  372. They're dirty

  373. in God's sight.

  374. Why would you

  375. do that?

  376. So,

  377. this is the

  378. question.

  379. Jesus,

  380. why aren't you

  381. enforcing the

  382. rules?

  383. And in verses

  384. 6-13,

  385. Jesus answers

  386. their question

  387. with a

  388. very sharp

  389. rebuke.

  390. Have you

  391. ever seen

  392. a hockey

  393. game?

  394. When a

  395. fight breaks

  396. out,

  397. gloves are

  398. off.

  399. Look at

  400. verse 6.

  401. And Jesus

  402. said to them,

  403. well did

  404. Isaiah prophesy

  405. of you

  406. hypocrites.

  407. You notice,

  408. Jesus is not

  409. appealing to

  410. the tradition

  411. of the

  412. elders.

  413. Jesus is

  414. quoting

  415. Isaiah 29-13.

  416. Verse 6-13.

  417. This

  418. people,

  419. he's speaking

  420. to the

  421. Pharisees

  422. and scribes,

  423. this people

  424. honors me

  425. with their

  426. lips,

  427. but their

  428. heart is

  429. far from

  430. me.

  431. Hypocrisy.

  432. You're saying

  433. one thing,

  434. tradition of

  435. the elders,

  436. but you're

  437. actually,

  438. your heart is

  439. seeking to

  440. accomplish

  441. something else.

  442. We'll see

  443. that in a

  444. sec.

  445. He goes

  446. on to say,

  447. in vain do

  448. they worship

  449. me.

  450. All of these

  451. washings,

  452. it's just

  453. vanity.

  454. It's

  455. pointless.

  456. It's not

  457. accomplishing

  458. what you

  459. think it's

  460. accomplishing.

  461. Teaching as

  462. doctrines the

  463. commandments of

  464. men,

  465. they have

  466. elevated these

  467. traditions of

  468. the elders,

  469. these applications

  470. that are not

  471. God's Word,

  472. on the same

  473. par as

  474. God's Word.

  475. The gloves

  476. are off.

  477. And so

  478. using God's

  479. Word,

  480. Jesus answers

  481. the Pharisees

  482. with quite a

  483. rebuke.

  484. In verse 8,

  485. he goes on to

  486. say,

  487. you leave the

  488. commandment of

  489. God and hold

  490. to the

  491. tradition of

  492. men.

  493. This is what's

  494. really going

  495. on.

  496. So verse 5

  497. carries this

  498. kind of like

  499. veiled

  500. accusation

  501. that Jesus

  502. and his

  503. disciples are

  504. not obeying

  505. God's will

  506. by not observing

  507. the tradition

  508. of the elders.

  509. And what

  510. Jesus does

  511. is,

  512. he's like,

  513. hold on a

  514. second.

  515. You are the

  516. ones who are

  517. not living

  518. according to

  519. God's Word.

  520. You've

  521. actually left

  522. God's commandments

  523. to lay hold

  524. of these

  525. traditions.

  526. Behold your

  527. king.

  528. Calling him

  529. out.

  530. And in

  531. verse 9,

  532. you see

  533. something that

  534. may make you

  535. a little

  536. uncomfortable

  537. from Jesus.

  538. It's

  539. Jesus'

  540. sarcasm.

  541. The

  542. sarcasm of

  543. the Son

  544. of God.

  545. Sarcasm of

  546. the Son

  547. of Man.

  548. And he

  549. said to

  550. them,

  551. you have a

  552. fine way of

  553. rejecting the

  554. commandment of

  555. God in order

  556. to establish

  557. your tradition.

  558. That is

  559. not a

  560. compliment.

  561. He's using

  562. sarcasm to

  563. expose

  564. their hypocrisy.

  565. And in

  566. verses 10

  567. and 13,

  568. Jesus goes

  569. on to give

  570. a very

  571. specific

  572. example of

  573. how the

  574. Pharisees and

  575. scribes had

  576. rejected the

  577. commandment of

  578. God to

  579. establish their

  580. tradition.

  581. It was a

  582. tradition introduced

  583. by the elders

  584. and the

  585. Pharisees and

  586. scribes called

  587. Corban.

  588. Corban means

  589. dedicated to

  590. God.

  591. God.

  592. So here's

  593. what was

  594. happening in

  595. a nutshell.

  596. God had

  597. commanded

  598. his people to

  599. honor your

  600. father and

  601. your mother.

  602. And so I

  603. have parents

  604. in their

  605. 70s.

  606. And so that

  607. command to

  608. me at that

  609. time would

  610. have showed

  611. up like,

  612. okay, we're

  613. going to use

  614. our resources

  615. to care for

  616. my parents.

  617. And what

  618. the Pharisees

  619. and scribes

  620. had done is

  621. they introduced

  622. this Corban

  623. thinking to be

  624. able to say

  625. things, you

  626. know what,

  627. Mike?

  628. You don't

  629. need to give

  630. that money to

  631. your parents

  632. because if you

  633. call it Corban,

  634. then you dedicate

  635. it to God and

  636. you're not no

  637. longer responsible

  638. to care for

  639. your parents.

  640. And that

  641. money, of

  642. course, do you

  643. know where it

  644. goes?

  645. Temple treasury.

  646. So what Jesus

  647. is pointing out

  648. is this.

  649. These Pharisees

  650. and scribes

  651. had rejected

  652. honor your

  653. father and

  654. your mother in

  655. order to

  656. hold to the

  657. tradition of

  658. the elders,

  659. Corban,

  660. and their

  661. hearts were

  662. far from

  663. God.

  664. It's hypocrisy.

  665. It's self-serving.

  666. And what Jesus

  667. says in verse

  668. 13, he says,

  669. and many such

  670. things you do.

  671. This is just

  672. one other,

  673. there's more.

  674. So here's this

  675. Q&A.

  676. Jesus is

  677. answering,

  678. and what we're

  679. seeing are two

  680. things.

  681. First is this.

  682. The thinking

  683. that defilement

  684. comes from the

  685. outside in,

  686. and that you

  687. need to be

  688. obsessively,

  689. compulsively

  690. washing in

  691. order to

  692. keep it

  693. outside,

  694. it's a

  695. terrible mistake.

  696. And here's

  697. what we're

  698. going to

  699. find out

  700. in a second.

  701. Because it

  702. doesn't make

  703. you clean.

  704. And the

  705. second terrible

  706. thing we're

  707. seeing here

  708. is the

  709. tendency among

  710. human beings

  711. to elevate

  712. their thoughts,

  713. their traditions,

  714. their intentions

  715. on the same

  716. par as

  717. God's

  718. word.

  719. You might be

  720. thinking,

  721. well,

  722. whoo,

  723. we don't

  724. practice

  725. Corban

  726. around here.

  727. We don't

  728. do the

  729. OCWD

  730. thing around

  731. here.

  732. Well,

  733. we don't.

  734. But we

  735. have this

  736. knack for

  737. making

  738. applications

  739. of God's

  740. good word

  741. into

  742. pharisaical

  743. rules.

  744. And so,

  745. every parent

  746. in the

  747. room is

  748. called to

  749. raise their

  750. children in

  751. the fear

  752. and admonition

  753. of the

  754. Lord.

  755. Lord.

  756. And in

  757. that

  758. command,

  759. parents,

  760. you're

  761. going to

  762. need to

  763. decide how

  764. your kids

  765. are going

  766. to be

  767. educated.

  768. Are we

  769. going to

  770. send them

  771. to public

  772. school?

  773. Are we

  774. going to

  775. send them

  776. to Christian

  777. school?

  778. Are we

  779. going to

  780. homeschool?

  781. There are

  782. groups of

  783. Christians who

  784. will say

  785. something like

  786. this.

  787. All

  788. Christians

  789. must

  790. homeschool

  791. their

  792. children.

  793. That is

  794. pharisaical.

  795. That is

  796. moving beyond

  797. the scriptures.

  798. Is it a

  799. good option?

  800. Sure.

  801. Is it

  802. God's

  803. defined

  804. will?

  805. No.

  806. So we

  807. can't

  808. raise it

  809. to the

  810. same

  811. par as

  812. scriptures.

  813. Do you

  814. see?

  815. Here is

  816. another way

  817. we do

  818. it.

  819. No

  820. Christian

  821. should

  822. drink

  823. alcohol.

  824. When the

  825. Bible itself

  826. doesn't forbid

  827. alcohol, it

  828. forbids getting

  829. drunk.

  830. We cannot

  831. insist upon

  832. things that

  833. the Bible

  834. itself does

  835. not insist

  836. on.

  837. We don't

  838. go beyond

  839. what the

  840. scriptures

  841. say.

  842. No

  843. Christian

  844. should

  845. participate

  846. in

  847. Halloween.

  848. People

  849. have

  850. different

  851. opinions

  852. on

  853. Halloween.

  854. But can

  855. you make

  856. that into

  857. a thus

  858. saith the

  859. Lord?

  860. Lord, you

  861. can't.

  862. Make a

  863. good case.

  864. Let's

  865. debate it.

  866. Here's the

  867. ways that we

  868. as Christians

  869. today have

  870. made our

  871. applications.

  872. We raise

  873. them to the

  874. same bar as

  875. thus saith

  876. the Lord.

  877. Every one

  878. of us has

  879. an inner

  880. Pharisee.

  881. we like

  882. to make

  883. rules and

  884. regulations

  885. to live

  886. by.

  887. Because we

  888. think we're

  889. safe.

  890. But these

  891. man-made

  892. restrictions

  893. that go

  894. beyond God's

  895. Word,

  896. they don't

  897. keep us

  898. clean.

  899. And we

  900. make the

  901. mistake

  902. of putting

  903. our words

  904. in the

  905. mouth of

  906. God.

  907. God.

  908. So here

  909. we have

  910. Jesus

  911. in verses

  912. 1-13

  913. exposing

  914. the

  915. outside-in

  916. mistake.

  917. But then

  918. in verses

  919. 14-23

  920. He

  921. supplies a

  922. corrective

  923. inside-out

  924. defilement,

  925. the way

  926. things really

  927. are.

  928. Let me

  929. read that

  930. for you.

  931. 14-23

  932. and He

  933. called the

  934. people to

  935. Him again

  936. and said

  937. to them,

  938. Hear me

  939. all of

  940. you and

  941. understand,

  942. there is

  943. nothing

  944. outside a

  945. person that

  946. by going

  947. into him

  948. can defile

  949. him,

  950. but the

  951. things that

  952. come out

  953. of a

  954. person are

  955. what defile

  956. him.

  957. And when

  958. He had

  959. entered the

  960. house and

  961. left the

  962. people,

  963. His

  964. disciples

  965. asked Him

  966. about the

  967. parable,

  968. and He

  969. said to

  970. them,

  971. Then are

  972. you also

  973. without

  974. understanding?

  975. Do you

  976. not see

  977. that whatever

  978. goes into

  979. a person

  980. from outside

  981. cannot defile

  982. him,

  983. since it

  984. enters not

  985. his heart

  986. but his

  987. stomach and

  988. is expelled?

  989. Thus He

  990. declared all

  991. foods clean.

  992. Amen.

  993. And He

  994. said,

  995. What comes

  996. out of a

  997. person is

  998. what defiles

  999. him.

  1000. From within,

  1001. out of the

  1002. heart of

  1003. man,

  1004. come evil

  1005. thoughts,

  1006. sexual

  1007. immorality,

  1008. theft,

  1009. murder,

  1010. adultery,

  1011. coveting,

  1012. wickedness,

  1013. deceit,

  1014. sensuality,

  1015. envy,

  1016. slander,

  1017. pride,

  1018. foolishness.

  1019. All these

  1020. evil things

  1021. come from

  1022. within,

  1023. and they

  1024. defile a

  1025. person.

  1026. So this

  1027. whole passage,

  1028. verses 1-23,

  1029. it now takes

  1030. a turn in

  1031. verse 14.

  1032. And you

  1033. can see it

  1034. because He's

  1035. no longer

  1036. talking to

  1037. the Pharisees

  1038. and scribes.

  1039. He's now

  1040. called a

  1041. people back

  1042. to Him.

  1043. This crowd

  1044. comes back

  1045. to them,

  1046. and what

  1047. Jesus is

  1048. doing here,

  1049. He's saying,

  1050. let me just

  1051. set the

  1052. record straight,

  1053. everybody.

  1054. Everybody.

  1055. And He

  1056. says in

  1057. verse 15,

  1058. there is

  1059. nothing outside

  1060. a person

  1061. that by going

  1062. into Him

  1063. can defile

  1064. Him,

  1065. but the

  1066. things that

  1067. come out

  1068. of a person

  1069. are what

  1070. defile Him.

  1071. And in

  1072. that sentence,

  1073. He blows

  1074. up the

  1075. tradition of

  1076. the elders.

  1077. Blows it

  1078. up.

  1079. Because what

  1080. He's saying

  1081. is defilement

  1082. isn't

  1083. transferred

  1084. by touch.

  1085. it's not

  1086. what you

  1087. eat that

  1088. will defile

  1089. you.

  1090. And in

  1091. verses 17

  1092. through 23,

  1093. there's another

  1094. scene change.

  1095. He goes

  1096. from talking

  1097. to this

  1098. crowd outside

  1099. to moving

  1100. into a

  1101. house,

  1102. leaves the

  1103. crowd,

  1104. and is now

  1105. with His

  1106. family of

  1107. faith,

  1108. His disciples.

  1109. Remember,

  1110. at the end

  1111. of Mark

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  1112. chapter 3.

  1113. And they

  1114. have a

  1115. question for

  1116. Him.

  1117. Verse 17.

  1118. And in

  1119. verses 18

  1120. to 23,

  1121. He supplies

  1122. the answer.

  1123. So the

  1124. question in

  1125. verse 17

  1126. is asked

  1127. by His

  1128. disciples.

  1129. They want

  1130. to know

  1131. about this

  1132. saying,

  1133. this parable

  1134. that He

  1135. said.

  1136. Let me

  1137. just read

  1138. it to

  1139. you again.

  1140. There's

  1141. nothing

  1142. outside a

  1143. person that

  1144. by going

  1145. into Him

  1146. can defile

  1147. him,

  1148. but the

  1149. things that

  1150. come out

  1151. of a

  1152. person are

  1153. what

  1154. defile

  1155. them.

  1156. Now,

  1157. if you

  1158. were one

  1159. of His

  1160. disciples,

  1161. most likely

  1162. you grew

  1163. up in

  1164. some kind

  1165. of Jewish

  1166. context of

  1167. that time.

  1168. So you're

  1169. thinking,

  1170. hold on a

  1171. second,

  1172. Jesus,

  1173. I don't

  1174. think I've

  1175. ever heard

  1176. you say

  1177. that before.

  1178. Are you

  1179. saying we

  1180. don't need

  1181. to wash

  1182. our hands?

  1183. Because I

  1184. grew up in

  1185. a culture,

  1186. I was being

  1187. told every

  1188. day since

  1189. I grew up,

  1190. Michael,

  1191. have you

  1192. washed your

  1193. hands so

  1194. that you

  1195. can be

  1196. pure before

  1197. you eat?

  1198. Jesus,

  1199. are you

  1200. saying it

  1201. doesn't matter

  1202. what we

  1203. eat?

  1204. So when

  1205. you think

  1206. about it,

  1207. there's good

  1208. reason for

  1209. His disciples

  1210. to be asking

  1211. questions about

  1212. that saying.

  1213. 18-23,

  1214. Jesus answers

  1215. their question

  1216. and 18

  1217. starts with

  1218. a mild

  1219. rebuke.

  1220. Then are

  1221. you also

  1222. without

  1223. understanding?

  1224. You guys

  1225. seem to be

  1226. a little

  1227. slow.

  1228. The reality

  1229. is I think

  1230. everybody in

  1231. the room

  1232. identifies with

  1233. being a little

  1234. slow.

  1235. It takes

  1236. some time

  1237. to fully

  1238. understand

  1239. what Jesus

  1240. calls us

  1241. to.

  1242. And then

  1243. in the

  1244. second part

  1245. of 18

  1246. into 19,

  1247. He starts

  1248. to spell

  1249. it out

  1250. for His

  1251. disciples.

  1252. Just spell

  1253. it out

  1254. for us,

  1255. Jesus.

  1256. Look what

  1257. He says.

  1258. Do you

  1259. not see

  1260. that whatever

  1261. goes into

  1262. a person

  1263. from outside

  1264. Him

  1265. cannot defile

  1266. Him?

  1267. Verse 19,

  1268. since it

  1269. enters not

  1270. His heart

  1271. but His

  1272. stomach

  1273. and is

  1274. expelled.

  1275. What Jesus

  1276. does is He

  1277. gives us an

  1278. anatomy lesson.

  1279. He's like,

  1280. hey, do you

  1281. not realize

  1282. that what you

  1283. eat, it

  1284. doesn't defile

  1285. you because

  1286. it goes

  1287. into your

  1288. mouth,

  1289. into your

  1290. stomach,

  1291. and then

  1292. expelled.

  1293. And His

  1294. point is

  1295. this.

  1296. In verse 19,

  1297. it never

  1298. enters your

  1299. heart.

  1300. And when

  1301. Jesus starts

  1302. talking about

  1303. the heart,

  1304. He's not

  1305. talking about

  1306. the muscle

  1307. in your

  1308. chest right

  1309. now that

  1310. is pumping

  1311. oxygen-rich

  1312. blood into

  1313. your body

  1314. so that you

  1315. can live.

  1316. He's not

  1317. talking about

  1318. that heart.

  1319. He's talking

  1320. about what

  1321. the Hebrews

  1322. thought as

  1323. the core

  1324. of who you

  1325. are, the

  1326. control center

  1327. of your

  1328. life, the

  1329. seat of a

  1330. person's

  1331. emotions and

  1332. thinking and

  1333. will and

  1334. worship.

  1335. You live out

  1336. of your

  1337. heart.

  1338. Is anybody

  1339. in the room

  1340. a Star Trek

  1341. fan?

  1342. I see

  1343. that hand.

  1344. Well, I'm

  1345. a bit of a

  1346. Star Trek

  1347. fan.

  1348. Old school

  1349. Captain

  1350. James T.

  1351. Kirk of

  1352. the USS

  1353. Enterprise.

  1354. There you

  1355. go.

  1356. James T.

  1357. Kirk, do

  1358. you know

  1359. where we

  1360. see James

  1361. T. Kirk

  1362. a lot in

  1363. episodes?

  1364. He's in his

  1365. captain's chair

  1366. on the what?

  1367. The bridge

  1368. of the USS

  1369. Enterprise.

  1370. Now, if we

  1371. were a Klingon

  1372. horde wanting

  1373. to take over

  1374. the USS

  1375. Enterprise,

  1376. I would

  1377. have our

  1378. beamer

  1379. person,

  1380. beam us

  1381. all onto

  1382. the bridge

  1383. of the USS

  1384. Enterprise.

  1385. Do you know

  1386. why?

  1387. If you

  1388. control the

  1389. bridge of

  1390. the USS

  1391. Enterprise,

  1392. you control

  1393. the USS

  1394. Enterprise.

  1395. We can

  1396. hijack it.

  1397. So when

  1398. Jesus is

  1399. talking about

  1400. the heart,

  1401. he's talking

  1402. about the

  1403. control center,

  1404. your bridge

  1405. of your

  1406. life.

  1407. What controls

  1408. you?

  1409. Where you

  1410. make decisions,

  1411. emotions,

  1412. where you

  1413. make priorities

  1414. from where

  1415. you worship,

  1416. out of the

  1417. overflow of

  1418. the heart,

  1419. you live.

  1420. So what

  1421. Jesus is

  1422. doing here

  1423. is very

  1424. simple.

  1425. He's saying

  1426. what you

  1427. eat has

  1428. no defiling

  1429. influence or

  1430. consequence on

  1431. the control

  1432. center of

  1433. your being.

  1434. Food

  1435. doesn't

  1436. defile

  1437. you because

  1438. it can't.

  1439. It doesn't

  1440. enter your

  1441. heart.

  1442. And Mark

  1443. spells out

  1444. the immediate

  1445. implication.

  1446. He declared

  1447. all foods

  1448. clean.

  1449. Do you know

  1450. what yours

  1451. truly had

  1452. this week?

  1453. I had some

  1454. pork chops

  1455. and they were

  1456. delicious.

  1457. Not once

  1458. did I think

  1459. they defiled

  1460. me.

  1461. If I were

  1462. a Jew

  1463. growing up

  1464. in Galilee

  1465. at this

  1466. time,

  1467. oh, I

  1468. would have

  1469. been in a

  1470. lot of

  1471. trouble.

  1472. But Jesus

  1473. is saying

  1474. no, that's

  1475. not your

  1476. problem.

  1477. Food

  1478. coming into

  1479. you is not

  1480. your problem.

  1481. But if food

  1482. can't defile

  1483. us in God's

  1484. sight, what

  1485. does?

  1486. defiles us.

  1487. And Jesus

  1488. continues with

  1489. his correction.

  1490. In verses

  1491. 20-23, he

  1492. clearly shows

  1493. us what

  1494. defiles us.

  1495. He clearly

  1496. shows where,

  1497. from where,

  1498. we are

  1499. defiled.

  1500. And it's not

  1501. outside of us,

  1502. it's inside of

  1503. us.

  1504. Look at verse

  1505. 20.

  1506. And he said,

  1507. what comes out

  1508. of a person is

  1509. what defiles

  1510. him.

  1511. Look at verse

  1512. 21.

  1513. He gets a

  1514. little bit

  1515. narrower.

  1516. From within.

  1517. And then the

  1518. next phrase,

  1519. he hits the

  1520. bullseye.

  1521. Out of the

  1522. heart of man.

  1523. Your control

  1524. center is a

  1525. corruption

  1526. center.

  1527. John Calvin

  1528. talked about the

  1529. human heart as

  1530. an idle

  1531. factory.

  1532. Jesus talks

  1533. about the

  1534. human heart as

  1535. an evil

  1536. factory.

  1537. You generate

  1538. evil from your

  1539. heart.

  1540. And then he

  1541. uses that

  1542. phrase,

  1543. evil thoughts.

  1544. It's like a

  1545. banner flying

  1546. over the

  1547. next 12

  1548. evils.

  1549. Let me just

  1550. list them for

  1551. you.

  1552. Out of your

  1553. heart comes

  1554. sexual immorality.

  1555. Any sexual

  1556. activity outside

  1557. the marital

  1558. union.

  1559. Out of your

  1560. heart comes

  1561. theft.

  1562. Out of your

  1563. heart comes

  1564. murder and

  1565. adultery and

  1566. coveting and

  1567. wickedness,

  1568. which is malice.

  1569. It's hate

  1570. heartedness.

  1571. Out of your

  1572. heart comes

  1573. deceit.

  1574. Out of your

  1575. heart comes

  1576. sensuality,

  1577. this hedonism

  1578. that's pursuing

  1579. pleasure.

  1580. Out of your

  1581. heart comes

  1582. envy.

  1583. Out of your

  1584. heart comes

  1585. slander.

  1586. Out of your

  1587. heart comes

  1588. pride and

  1589. foolishness.

  1590. He does

  1591. not relent,

  1592. does he?

  1593. In what he's

  1594. doing there,

  1595. this is not a

  1596. list coming

  1597. from the

  1598. tradition of

  1599. the elders.

  1600. This is a

  1601. list coming

  1602. from your

  1603. Bible.

  1604. Five of the

  1605. twelve come

  1606. right out of

  1607. the Ten

  1608. Commandments.

  1609. what Jesus

  1610. is saying,

  1611. and this is

  1612. where you

  1613. need to

  1614. just ask

  1615. the question,

  1616. is it

  1617. true or

  1618. not?

  1619. Is that

  1620. everyone in

  1621. the room,

  1622. every one of

  1623. our hearts

  1624. is capable

  1625. of producing

  1626. any and

  1627. all of

  1628. these twelve

  1629. evil things.

  1630. all of

  1631. us.

  1632. These evils,

  1633. according to

  1634. Jesus,

  1635. come from

  1636. our hearts.

  1637. They're not

  1638. outside of

  1639. us.

  1640. The devil

  1641. doesn't make

  1642. me do it.

  1643. The world

  1644. doesn't make

  1645. me do it.

  1646. The person

  1647. that sinned

  1648. against me

  1649. doesn't make

  1650. me do this.

  1651. I make

  1652. me do

  1653. this.

  1654. It's not

  1655. outside of

  1656. you.

  1657. It's inside

  1658. of you in

  1659. the point

  1660. Jesus is

  1661. getting at

  1662. and you're

  1663. responsible.

  1664. you're

  1665. responsible for

  1666. your heart.

  1667. Jeremiah 17

  1668. 9 says,

  1669. the heart is

  1670. deceitful above

  1671. all else and

  1672. desperately sick.

  1673. Who can

  1674. understand it?

  1675. Jeremiah 17

  1676. 10 says,

  1677. the heart,

  1678. the Lord

  1679. knows the

  1680. heart.

  1681. And so

  1682. Jesus is not

  1683. painting a

  1684. flattering picture

  1685. of our sinful

  1686. condition,

  1687. is he?

  1688. He's getting

  1689. at the

  1690. depravity of

  1691. sin.

  1692. It's at the

  1693. root,

  1694. brothers and

  1695. sisters.

  1696. It's in

  1697. our hearts.

  1698. We have an

  1699. evil factory

  1700. dwelling within.

  1701. So Jesus

  1702. is exposing

  1703. our hearts.

  1704. We have an

  1705. evil producing

  1706. control center

  1707. that we live

  1708. out of.

  1709. The question

  1710. is,

  1711. is it

  1712. true?

  1713. Do you know

  1714. how you can

  1715. test it?

  1716. Has anybody

  1717. committed sexual

  1718. immorality in

  1719. the room?

  1720. No.

  1721. I have.

  1722. Guilty.

  1723. It's true.

  1724. Has anybody

  1725. stolen?

  1726. Has anybody

  1727. coveted?

  1728. Just go down

  1729. the list and

  1730. ask, has it

  1731. come out of

  1732. your heart?

  1733. Yes.

  1734. The evil that

  1735. defiles us,

  1736. verse 23,

  1737. is coming from

  1738. inside of us.

  1739. we defile

  1740. ourselves

  1741. because of the

  1742. evil in our

  1743. hearts.

  1744. Here's what this

  1745. means.

  1746. It means you

  1747. need to decide

  1748. if these words

  1749. of Jesus are

  1750. true or not.

  1751. Either our

  1752. hearts are

  1753. producing evil

  1754. and that they

  1755. are defiling us

  1756. or your heart

  1757. doesn't do that.

  1758. if your heart

  1759. is producing

  1760. evils,

  1761. you are

  1762. responsible for

  1763. those evils.

  1764. You can't

  1765. blame the

  1766. devil.

  1767. You can't

  1768. blame the

  1769. world.

  1770. You can't

  1771. blame someone

  1772. else for

  1773. sinning against

  1774. you.

  1775. You are

  1776. responsible

  1777. for what is

  1778. defiling you

  1779. and it's

  1780. coming from

  1781. within you.

  1782. So,

  1783. why do we

  1784. sin?

  1785. Why do we

  1786. sin?

  1787. Our own

  1788. hearts

  1789. cause us

  1790. to sin.

  1791. And yet,

  1792. till sin

  1793. be bitter,

  1794. Christ will

  1795. not be

  1796. sweet.

  1797. What's the

  1798. point of this

  1799. passage?

  1800. Well, the

  1801. point is

  1802. simple.

  1803. The evil

  1804. within

  1805. defiles each

  1806. of us.

  1807. That's the

  1808. point.

  1809. It's not

  1810. outside of

  1811. us, it's

  1812. inside of

  1813. us.

  1814. And don't

  1815. forget who's

  1816. saying this.

  1817. Remember the

  1818. Gospel of

  1819. Mark, what

  1820. it says about

  1821. Jesus, that

  1822. Jesus Christ

  1823. is the Son

  1824. of God, that

  1825. Jesus Christ

  1826. is the Son

  1827. of Man.

  1828. That Jesus

  1829. Christ has

  1830. the authority

  1831. to forgive

  1832. sin.

  1833. That Jesus

  1834. Christ has

  1835. authority over

  1836. nature, Mark

  1837. 4.

  1838. That Jesus

  1839. Christ has

  1840. authority over

  1841. demons, Mark

  1842. 5.

  1843. That Jesus

  1844. Christ has

  1845. authority over

  1846. disease, Mark

  1847. 5.

  1848. Jesus Christ

  1849. has even

  1850. authority over

  1851. death.

  1852. The all

  1853. authoritative

  1854. King of the

  1855. universe is

  1856. clearly declaring

  1857. to us this

  1858. morning that

  1859. the evil that

  1860. defiles us

  1861. doesn't come

  1862. from outside

  1863. of us, it

  1864. comes from

  1865. inside of us.

  1866. And we're

  1867. responsible for

  1868. it.

  1869. Till sin be

  1870. bitter, Christ

  1871. will not be

  1872. sweet.

  1873. You want

  1874. some good

  1875. news?

  1876. The very

  1877. one who

  1878. exposes our

  1879. defiled hearts

  1880. is the only

  1881. one who can

  1882. purify our

  1883. defiled hearts.

  1884. Isn't that

  1885. good news?

  1886. He's the only

  1887. one.

  1888. making,

  1889. obeying rules

  1890. that's not

  1891. going to block

  1892. the defilement

  1893. because the

  1894. defilement

  1895. comes from

  1896. within.

  1897. Making,

  1898. obeying rules

  1899. cannot

  1900. cleanse your

  1901. heart.

  1902. Only Jesus

  1903. can purify

  1904. your heart.

  1905. who can

  1906. forgive sins

  1907. but God

  1908. alone.

  1909. As an

  1910. example of

  1911. this, do

  1912. you remember

  1913. when King

  1914. David in

  1915. 2 Samuel,

  1916. remember when

  1917. he sinned,

  1918. he had

  1919. committed adultery

  1920. with Bathsheba,

  1921. and then he

  1922. killed her

  1923. husband Uriah,

  1924. murdered him

  1925. to cover it

  1926. up.

  1927. And then in

  1928. Psalm 51,

  1929. David confesses

  1930. it.

  1931. And he uses

  1932. this kind of

  1933. language,

  1934. cleanse me,

  1935. wash me with

  1936. and make me

  1937. clean,

  1938. create in me

  1939. a clean

  1940. heart.

  1941. Where we go,

  1942. when we

  1943. acknowledge

  1944. the defiling

  1945. evil in our

  1946. hearts,

  1947. we run

  1948. to God

  1949. and seek

  1950. cleansing

  1951. from Him.

  1952. Do you want

  1953. to be cleansed

  1954. from your

  1955. evil?

  1956. Just as

  1957. David cried

  1958. out to God,

  1959. we cry out

  1960. to our

  1961. Emmanuel.

  1962. There is a

  1963. fountain filled

  1964. with blood

  1965. drawn from

  1966. Emmanuel's

  1967. veins,

  1968. and sinners

  1969. plunged beneath

  1970. that flood

  1971. lose all

  1972. their guilty

  1973. sayings.

  1974. What can

  1975. wash me

  1976. from my

  1977. sin?

  1978. Nothing but

  1979. the blood

  1980. of Jesus.

  1981. God's

  1982. cleansing

  1983. grace

  1984. is greater

  1985. than the

  1986. evil

  1987. that defiles

  1988. our hearts.

  1989. Amen.

  1990. Amen.

  1991. So this

  1992. morning,

  1993. if you've

  1994. been convinced

  1995. by these

  1996. words of

  1997. Jesus,

  1998. that the

  1999. evil that

  2000. you need to

  2001. be most

  2002. concerned about

  2003. is not

  2004. outside of

  2005. you,

  2006. but inside

  2007. of you,

  2008. here are

  2009. three quick

  2010. applications.

  2011. Application

  2012. one.

  2013. You don't

  2014. need your

  2015. hands washed.

  2016. You need

  2017. your heart

  2018. washed.

  2019. Again and

  2020. again.

  2021. We know

  2022. that if

  2023. you're a

  2024. believer in

  2025. the room,

  2026. you're

  2027. simultaneously

  2028. justified in

  2029. right standing

  2030. with God,

  2031. and yet you

  2032. still sin,

  2033. which means

  2034. you're going

  2035. to need

  2036. cleansing

  2037. again and

  2038. again and

  2039. again.

  2040. That's why

  2041. 1 John 1

  2042. 9 says,

  2043. if we

  2044. confess our

  2045. sins,

  2046. He is

  2047. faithful and

  2048. just to

  2049. forgive our

  2050. sins and

  2051. cleanse us

  2052. from all

  2053. unrighteousness.

  2054. Christian,

  2055. you need

  2056. your heart

  2057. cleansed.

  2058. Again and

  2059. again.

  2060. Because it's

  2061. generating

  2062. evils.

  2063. If you're

  2064. not a

  2065. Christian,

  2066. you just

  2067. need to

  2068. start by

  2069. asking Jesus

  2070. to wash

  2071. you white

  2072. as snow.

  2073. He can

  2074. and He

  2075. will.

  2076. Until sin

  2077. be bitter,

  2078. Christ will

  2079. not be

  2080. sweet.

  2081. Point two.

  2082. Sanctification

  2083. is the

  2084. hard work

  2085. of heart

  2086. work.

  2087. Jesus

  2088. goes right

  2089. to the

  2090. heart and

  2091. so must

  2092. we.

  2093. As we

  2094. want to

  2095. become less

  2096. and less

  2097. ruled by

  2098. sin and

  2099. more and

  2100. more like

  2101. Jesus,

  2102. we've got to

  2103. pay attention

  2104. to our

  2105. hearts.

  2106. Paul Tripp

  2107. talks about

  2108. how a

  2109. Christian grows

  2110. and he

  2111. compares a

  2112. root of a

  2113. tree and

  2114. its fruit to

  2115. the heart and

  2116. the actions of

  2117. a Christian.

  2118. You've got a

  2119. bad root,

  2120. you've got bad

  2121. fruit.

  2122. You've got an

  2123. evil heart,

  2124. you'll have

  2125. evil actions.

  2126. And so what

  2127. we need to be

  2128. doing to

  2129. really grow

  2130. is tend to

  2131. the root,

  2132. the heart of

  2133. the situation.

  2134. Can I

  2135. challenge you

  2136. with something?

  2137. Because I

  2138. love you.

  2139. Psalm 139

    Psalms 139:23

  2140. verses 23

  2141. and 24

  2142. is a

  2143. psalm of

  2144. David.

  2145. Can I

  2146. encourage you

  2147. to pray that

  2148. to God?

  2149. Search me,

  2150. O God,

  2151. and know my

  2152. heart.

  2153. Try me and

  2154. know my

  2155. thoughts and

  2156. see if there

  2157. be any

  2158. grievous way

  2159. in me and

  2160. lead me in

  2161. the way

  2162. everlasting.

  2163. God might

  2164. show you that

  2165. you are lying.

  2166. This question

  2167. is, why are

  2168. you lying?

  2169. I was

  2170. praying this

  2171. and I got

  2172. exposed of a

  2173. fear that

  2174. tempts me to

  2175. speak a certain

  2176. way to

  2177. someone.

  2178. God?

  2179. Would you

  2180. ask your

  2181. God to

  2182. expose

  2183. the evils

  2184. in your

  2185. heart and

  2186. then ask

  2187. him to make

  2188. you white as

  2189. snow?

  2190. The third

  2191. application,

  2192. till sin be

  2193. bitter, Christ

  2194. will not be

  2195. sweet.

  2196. The third

  2197. application is

  2198. this.

  2199. Because you've

  2200. got an inner

  2201. Pharisee living

  2202. inside of

  2203. you.

  2204. Remember

  2205. these words

  2206. of Jesus.

  2207. Judge not

  2208. that you not

  2209. be judged.

  2210. For with the

  2211. judgment you

  2212. pronounce, you

  2213. will be judged.

  2214. And with the

  2215. measure that you

  2216. use, it will be

  2217. measured to you.

  2218. Why do you see

  2219. the speck that

  2220. is in your

  2221. brother's eye, but

  2222. do not notice

  2223. the log that

  2224. is in your

  2225. own eye?

  2226. Or how can

  2227. you say to

  2228. your brother,

  2229. let me take

  2230. the speck out

  2231. of your eye,

  2232. when there is

  2233. the log in

  2234. your own eye?

  2235. You hypocrite,

  2236. first take the

  2237. log out of

  2238. your own eye,

  2239. and then you

  2240. will see clearly

  2241. to take the

  2242. speck out of

  2243. your brother's

  2244. eye.

  2245. Just as a

  2246. word of

  2247. process.

  2248. First, be

  2249. doing the

  2250. hard work of

  2251. your own

  2252. heart work,

  2253. before volunteering

  2254. to do the

  2255. hard work of

  2256. heart work in

  2257. someone else.

  2258. The reason

  2259. why is it will

  2260. keep you humble

  2261. and make you

  2262. helpful, because

  2263. you'll be working

  2264. out of this, I

  2265. am in constant

  2266. need of God's

  2267. sanctifying grace.

  2268. And if I can

  2269. help you, I'd

  2270. be glad to, but

  2271. I've got to deal

  2272. with me first.

  2273. Until sin be

  2274. bitter, Christ

  2275. will not be

  2276. sweet.

  2277. Why do you

  2278. sin?

  2279. Jesus is

  2280. crystal clear.

  2281. All these

  2282. evils, they

  2283. come from

  2284. within, and

  2285. they defile a

  2286. person.

  2287. But the

  2288. very one who

  2289. exposes our

  2290. evil hearts is

  2291. the very one,

  2292. the only one,

  2293. who purifies

  2294. our hearts.

  2295. Isn't that

  2296. good news?

  2297. And as we

  2298. trust Him and

  2299. go to Him

  2300. daily for

  2301. fresh cleansing,

  2302. He slowly

  2303. changes our

  2304. hearts, purifies

  2305. our hearts.

  2306. Blessed are the

  2307. pure of heart,

  2308. for they will

  2309. see God.

  2310. And over time,

  2311. our lives

  2312. change.

  2313. And we

  2314. treasure Jesus

  2315. more.

  2316. Till sin be

  2317. bitter, Christ

  2318. will not be

  2319. sweet.

  2320. let's pray.

  2321. God in

  2322. heaven,

  2323. Father, would

  2324. you just

  2325. continue to

  2326. show us our

  2327. desperate need

  2328. for you because

  2329. our hearts are

  2330. desperately wicked.

  2331. Father, thank you

  2332. for filling us

  2333. with your

  2334. Spirit, for

  2335. indwelling us

  2336. with your

  2337. Spirit, for

  2338. giving us a

  2339. new affection

  2340. by your

  2341. Spirit's power.

  2342. God, would

  2343. you make us

  2344. more and more

  2345. like Jesus

  2346. and less and

  2347. less ruled by

  2348. these evil

  2349. desires.

  2350. We look

  2351. forward to

  2352. the day

  2353. when you

  2354. purify us

  2355. completely.

  2356. In Jesus'

  2357. name,

  2358. Amen.

  2359. Amen.

  2360. Amen.

  2361. Amen.

  2362. Amen.

  2363. Amen.

  2364. Amen.

  2365. Amen.

  2366. Amen.

  2367. Amen.

  2368. Amen.

  2369. Amen.

  2370. Amen.

  2371. Amen.

  2372. Amen.

  2373. Amen.

  2374. Amen.

  2375. Amen.

  2376. Amen.

  2377. Amen.

  2378. Amen.

  2379. Amen.
