  1. Hear God's Word.

  2. When the Sabbath was passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the Romans, and Salome bought

  3. spices so that they might go and anoint Him, Jesus, who had died.

  4. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.

  5. And they were saying to one another, who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance

  6. of the tomb?

  7. And looking up, they saw the stone had been rolled back.

  8. It was very large, and entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side,

  9. dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed.

  10. And He said to them, do not be alarmed.

  11. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who is crucified.

  12. He is risen.

  13. He has risen.

  14. He's not here.

  15. See the place where they laid Him?

  16. But go tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you to Galilee.

  17. There you will see Him, just as He told you.

  18. And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them.

  19. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

  20. May God bless the Word.

  21. Aslan.

  22. Aslan.

  23. That great Christ figure of the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis.

  24. The Mighty Lion.

  25. What a great book series if you haven't read that.

  26. Parents, if you've not yet read through the Narnia series with your children, get that on your short list.

  27. Well, Aslan, as C.S. Lewis betrays him, is this Christ figure.

  28. And early on in the Narnia series, and I think it's the magician's nephew,

  29. Lewis portrays this lion as singing into creation all of Narnia.

  30. It's a beautiful sight.

  31. In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,

  32. Aslan rescues this Narnia from the perpetual winter of the reign of the White Witch.

  33. Well, at this moment in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,

  34. there's this dramatic moment where Aslan offers himself to be killed in the place of Edmund.

  35. One of the four Pevensey children.

  36. Edmund was the traitor.

  37. And though betrayed, Aslan willingly offers himself to be killed by the White Witch

  38. on that ancient stone table.

  39. With Susan and Lucy looking on.

  40. And then the White Witch kills Aslan.

  41. Leaves him for dead.

  42. And then go bringing her, her horde of beasts goes to fight Aslan's army.

  43. Shortly afterwards, Lucy and Susan are mourning the death of Aslan.

  44. And all of a sudden, they hear this splitting of stone.

  45. Granite being sheaved in two.

  46. The stone table has been split.

  47. Deep magic has brought Aslan back from the grave.

  48. He appears.

  49. He's risen from the dead.

  50. His death and resurrection changes everything in Narnia.

  51. Aslan is this Christ figure.

  52. And after his resurrection, he is on the move.

  53. Breathing his life-giving breath on all of those who's been turned to stone.

  54. This fall, we've been making our way through the Gospel of Mark.

  55. And Mark has been making this argument all throughout it that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

  56. Two weeks ago, we beheld our rejected King.

  57. Chapter 14.

  58. Last week, we beheld our crucified King.

  59. Chapter 15.

  60. Remember, when Jesus breathes his last.

  61. The curtain of the temple is torn in two from top to bottom.

  62. And then the centurion, he cries out, having witnessed what Jesus has just done.

  63. Says, truly, this man was the Son of God.

  64. Today, we behold our risen King.

  65. There are three words that come from the mouth of an angel.

  66. And it changes everything.

  67. He has risen.

  68. And that should put some awe in your heart.

  69. Because that means, by implication, that Jesus is alive today.

  70. Are you living as if Jesus is presently alive?

  71. Or as if he's long dead?

  72. This Jesus is alive today.

  73. And there are three scenes in Mark 16, 1 through 8, that will help us to see that.

  74. Going to the tomb.

  75. In the tomb.

  76. Coming out of the tomb.

  77. So let's look at scene number one.

  78. Going to the tomb.

  79. It's in verses 1 through 4.

  80. And we start with these women.

  81. When the Sabbath was passed.

  82. That's Saturday.

  83. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome.

  84. Bought spices so that they go and anoint Jesus.

  85. Jesus, of course, has been killed on Friday.

  86. It's now Sunday.

  87. We've already been introduced to the Marys.

  88. If you look up one verse to 1547.

  89. At Christ's death, his body's been given to Pilate.

  90. Been placed in a tomb.

  91. In verse 47, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Jesus, Joseph, saw where he was laid.

  92. So Mary and Mary have eyewitness account of the tomb that Jesus' body was laid in.

  93. If you look at 1540, they're also referenced.

  94. The centurion has just said,

  95. Surely this man was the Son of God.

  96. In verse 40, there were also women looking on from a distance,

  97. among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, the younger, and of Joseph.

  98. And Salome.

  99. They had been with Jesus from the beginning.

  100. They've been supporting in his ministry.

  101. So you have these three women who are, on Sunday morning, have spices in hand and are going to the tomb.

  102. By the way, that Mary of Joseph, that's Jesus' mother.

  103. And don't miss the fact that the male disciples of Jesus are MIA.

  104. Nowhere to be found.

  105. Now we come to the tomb in verses 2 and 3.

  106. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.

  107. And they were saying to one another,

  108. Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?

  109. A tomb was a place to place a body.

  110. It was basically a cave with a small entrance,

  111. and there was a bigger room inside that they had a burial platform

  112. that you'd place the corpse of someone.

  113. And there was a confined space.

  114. But it's pretty safe to say at this point in the account

  115. that these three women,

  116. what do you think they were expecting to find in the tomb?

  117. The dead body of Jesus.

  118. This tomb actually belonged to Joseph of Arimathea.

  119. We learn that in verses 42 through 47 in chapter 15.

  120. Joseph was a rich man.

  121. He was part of the Sanhedrin.

  122. He was looking for the kingdom of God,

  123. which means he was a follower of Jesus.

  124. After Jesus dies, he, Joseph of Arimathea,

  125. goes to Pilate and asks for the body.

  126. Pilate's surprised that Jesus had died so fast.

  127. So he wants to confirm that.

  128. He asks for the centurion who confessed that Jesus was the Son of God.

  129. The centurion comes.

  130. He says, yeah, he's dead.

  131. Pilate grants Joseph the body of Jesus.

  132. And because it was just before the Sabbath,

  133. Joseph puts the corpse of Jesus in his tomb,

  134. seals it up,

  135. and we're on our way.

  136. Now you might be thinking, well, that's interesting.

  137. Those are little interesting little tidbits.

  138. Until you realize that Mark is actually doing something else.

  139. Do you remember how in chapter 14 and chapter 15,

  140. there's all these allusions to Isaiah 53,

  141. and then in chapter 15 to Psalm 22,

  142. but Isaiah 53 is all over the place.

  143. What we have here is another allusion to Isaiah 53.

  144. The suffering servant.

  145. Let me just read it.

  146. This is verse 9.

  147. And they made his grave with the wicked,

  148. and with a rich man in his death.

  149. You see, what's going on here

  150. is not just historic.

  151. It actually happened.

  152. But Mark is helping us make a connection.

  153. This is all according to God's plan.

  154. This is the fulfillment of Isaiah 53.

  155. It's all according to the Scriptures.

  156. There's a time stamp as well.

  157. We saw the time stamps last week in Mark 15.

  158. The 6th hour and the 9th hour.

  159. Here we're told it's a particular day.

  160. Do you see that in verse 2?

  161. And very early on the first day of the week.

  162. That means it's Sunday.

  163. Which means it's the third day

  164. since Jesus was crucified.

  165. He was crucified on day 1, Friday.

  166. Then there's the Sabbath, day 2.

  167. And then there's Sunday, day 3.

  168. It's the third day.

  169. This is fulfilling what Jesus himself has said

  170. over and over and over.

  171. I'm going to be rejected, killed,

  172. and on the third day I will rise.

  173. There's a time stamp.

  174. It's at sunrise.

  175. So this is very early on, on that Sunday.

  176. These women have, they're not wasting any time.

  177. They've got burial spices in hand

  178. that they are going to the tomb.

  179. And then they remember something.

  180. Who's going to move away the stone for us?

  181. And evidently the stone was so big

  182. that the three of them themselves couldn't move it.

  183. That's how big it was.

  184. Now you may be wondering,

  185. well how can he forget a detail like that?

  186. Has anybody planned the funeral

  187. of a loved one that recently died?

  188. It's hard work.

  189. You're in a state of numbness.

  190. It's surreal.

  191. You've got details that you're trying to take care of.

  192. I think you need to realize

  193. the mood of this moment

  194. as these three women are making their way to the tomb.

  195. They're not happy.

  196. They're sad.

  197. They're somber.

  198. They're quiet.

  199. They're grieving.

  200. They're forgetting details

  201. because they're distracted.

  202. These women have spent a lot of time

  203. with Jesus over the last three years.

  204. And now they've seen him die.

  205. They saw where he was buried.

  206. And as they're making their way to the tomb,

  207. they are expecting to find

  208. the corpse of Jesus in that tomb.

  209. But as they walk in verse 4

  210. up to the tomb,

  211. they see that the stone has been rolled away.

  212. And their immediate thought is not

  213. he's been raised from the dead.

  214. If you were them,

  215. I'm guessing you'd be like,

  216. what's going on?

  217. Who got here before us?

  218. I'm guessing their heart rate

  219. would have started going up.

  220. Maybe you came into this building this morning

  221. and you've got some questions

  222. about the empty tomb.

  223. Maybe you've been a Christian for a long time

  224. and you've never thought

  225. about what the empty tomb

  226. actually means for you.

  227. Let's go into the tomb.

  228. That's where Mark brings us.

  229. Scene 2,

  230. while in the tomb,

  231. verses 5 through 7.

  232. And entering the tomb,

  233. they saw a young man

  234. sitting on the right side

  235. dressed in a white robe

  236. and they were alarmed.

  237. Kids, if you want to draw a picture for me,

  238. this is it.

  239. And he said to them,

  240. do not be alarmed.

  241. You seek Jesus of Nazareth

  242. who was crucified.

  243. He is risen.

  244. He's not here.

  245. See the place where they laid him.

  246. But go,

  247. tell his disciples and Peter

  248. that he is going before you to Galilee.

  249. There you will see him

  250. just as he told you.

  251. Now,

  252. if you're one of these three women,

  253. you're expecting to find

  254. in this tomb

  255. the corpse of Jesus.

  256. And so the first surprise

  257. of the empty tomb,

  258. and there are a number of surprises

  259. in the empty tomb.

  260. The first surprise

  261. is a surprising sight.

  262. Verse 5.

  263. This young man

  264. dressed in white.

  265. They don't see the body.

  266. They see this young man

  267. dressed in white.

  268. The other gospels

  269. talk about there being

  270. two angels,

  271. dazzling appearance,

  272. and in classic Mark fashion,

  273. he gives you bare bones.

  274. Yes?

  275. This would have been spectacular.

  276. This young man is an angel,

  277. a messenger from heaven,

  278. because God knows

  279. that these women

  280. will need a heavenly explanation

  281. to make sense

  282. of the empty tomb.

  283. You see,

  284. this angel

  285. is to give all of us

  286. God's perspective

  287. and explanation

  288. for the empty tomb.

  289. Could you imagine

  290. if these women

  291. had heart rate monitors

  292. on them?

  293. The three of them

  294. have a different

  295. heart rate monitor

  296. on them.

  297. As they're approaching

  298. the tomb,

  299. they see this stone

  300. rolled away.

  301. I'm guessing,

  302. amidst their grief,

  303. they're starting now

  304. to get concerned,

  305. and so their heart rate

  306. starts going up.

  307. But when they walk

  308. into the tomb,

  309. they come underneath

  310. the entrance

  311. into the opening,

  312. and they see

  313. a young man

  314. dressed in white,

  315. sitting to the right

  316. of this burial platform.

  317. No body.

  318. I'm guessing,

  319. if we were reading it

  320. on a digital display,

  321. their heart rates

  322. would have gone

  323. through the roof.

  324. What's going on?

  325. They're obviously alarmed,

  326. as you and I would be.

  327. This is a heavenly visitor

  328. with them

  329. in a confined space

  330. of this tomb

  331. where Jesus had been laid,

  332. but His body's not there.

  333. Surprise two.

  334. This angel

  335. has a surprise

  336. explanation.

  337. He's going to explain

  338. to them

  339. what has happened.

  340. He starts by saying,

  341. do not be alarmed

  342. because He

  343. has Heaven's

  344. point of view.

  345. He

  346. knows that this is

  347. all according to plan.

  348. He knows

  349. something that

  350. these three women

  351. haven't yet

  352. fully realized,

  353. and that Jesus

  354. has been true

  355. to His Word.

  356. He says to them,

  357. you seek

  358. Jesus of Nazareth.

  359. They're all talking

  360. about the same person.

  361. This Jesus

  362. of Nazareth

  363. who was crucified.

  364. crucified.

  365. This angel

  366. knows that

  367. these women

  368. just witnessed

  369. three days earlier

  370. the death

  371. of Jesus.

  372. And I'm guessing

  373. all Heaven

  374. had witnessed

  375. the death

  376. of Jesus.

  377. Which makes

  378. one wonder,

  379. how do you think

  380. Heaven responded

  381. when Jesus

  382. breathed

  383. His last

  384. and the curtain

  385. was torn in two

  386. and the centurion

  387. confessed,

  388. truly this man

  389. was the Son of God.

  390. Do you think

  391. that there was

  392. just like

  393. this heavenly

  394. thunderous ovation?

  395. Or do you think

  396. there was just

  397. such silence

  398. around the throne

  399. that this

  400. is what God

  401. has done

  402. to save

  403. sinners?

  404. This angel

  405. knows

  406. that He

  407. was crucified.

  408. And then

  409. He speaks

  410. those three

  411. words that

  412. change everything.

  413. He has

  414. risen.

  415. In the

  416. Greek

  417. it's just

  418. one verb.

  419. To roughly

  420. translate it

  421. into English

  422. you could say

  423. He has

  424. been risen.

  425. The angel

  426. is saying

  427. Jesus didn't

  428. raise Himself

  429. He was raised

  430. by God

  431. the Father.

  432. The divine

  433. Son of God

  434. who

  435. bore the wrath

  436. of God

  437. the Father

  438. on Friday

  439. has now

  440. been raised

  441. by the same

  442. God the Father

  443. on Sunday

  444. morning.

  445. This is

  446. all according

  447. to God's plan.

  448. This is

  449. according to

  450. the Scriptures.

  451. This is

  452. actually

  453. surprising

  454. good news.

  455. These three

  456. words the

  457. angel

  458. is speaking

  459. I'm guessing

  460. if you're one

  461. of these

  462. three ladies

  463. with your

  464. heart rate

  465. kind of

  466. heart in

  467. your chest

  468. you're kind

  469. of like

  470. what?

  471. I'm not

  472. sure if they

  473. totally understood

  474. what's being

  475. said here.

  476. Maybe you've

  477. never thought

  478. about the

  479. implications

  480. of those

  481. three words.

  482. He has

  483. risen.

  484. He's

  485. alive today.

  486. The angel

  487. goes on to

  488. say he's

  489. not here

  490. and sitting

  491. to the right

  492. of this

  493. burial platform

  494. he kind of

  495. gestures and

  496. say see the

  497. place where

  498. they laid

  499. him?

  500. Nothing.

  501. No body.

  502. No corpse.

  503. No Jesus.

  504. Empty.

  505. It's an

  506. empty tomb.

  507. Here we

  508. have an

  509. angel

  510. explaining

  511. the empty

  512. tomb.

  513. Surprise!

  514. He has

  515. risen.

  516. This is a

  517. God-sized

  518. miracle

  519. for the

  520. God-sized

  521. work of

  522. saving

  523. sinners.

  524. It's at the

  525. heart of the

  526. gospel.

  527. It's all

  528. accordance to

  529. the scriptures.

  530. And you

  531. know what?

  532. It either

  533. happened or

  534. it didn't.

  535. He was

  536. either raised

  537. from the

  538. dead or he

  539. wasn't.

  540. He's

  541. either alive

  542. today or

  543. he's been

  544. long dead.

  545. So this is

  546. an angelic

  547. heavenly

  548. explanation for

  549. the empty

  550. tomb.

  551. But there's

  552. more surprises

  553. coming from

  554. the empty

  555. tomb.

  556. In verse

  557. 6, this

  558. angel explains

  559. why the

  560. body's not

  561. there.

  562. He is

  563. risen.

  564. In verse

  565. 7, he

  566. goes into

  567. some surprise

  568. instruction.

  569. Look at

  570. verse 7.

  571. But go

  572. tell his

  573. disciples and

  574. Peter that

  575. he is going

  576. before you to

  577. Galilee.

  578. There you

  579. will see

  580. him just

  581. as he

  582. told you.

  583. Well, that's

  584. rather surprising.

  585. He has

  586. risen.

  587. Go tell.

  588. What's

  589. historically

  590. interesting about

  591. this and

  592. striking is

  593. that the

  594. first witnesses

  595. to the

  596. empty tomb,

  597. the first

  598. people to

  599. bear testimony,

  600. the first

  601. humans to

  602. bear testimony

  603. that Jesus

  604. has risen

  605. from the

  606. dead are

  607. these women.

  608. It was

  609. historically

  610. remarkable

  611. because back

  612. in that

  613. time, their

  614. testimony would

  615. not have been

  616. considered having

  617. much weight.

  618. this is

  619. extraordinary.

  620. Now, it

  621. even gets

  622. more

  623. extraordinary.

  624. This

  625. angel says,

  626. but go tell

  627. his disciples

  628. and Peter.

  629. Now, I

  630. don't know

  631. about you,

  632. but if I

  633. were Jesus

  634. and had been

  635. abandoned by

  636. all my dudes,

  637. I'd be like,

  638. you're fired.

  639. Done.

  640. I'll go find

  641. some other

  642. Gentile folks

  643. to do this.

  644. but that's

  645. not what's

  646. going on

  647. here.

  648. This

  649. angel seems

  650. to think

  651. that the

  652. risen

  653. Jesus

  654. hasn't

  655. disowned

  656. his

  657. disciples,

  658. but still

  659. claims them

  660. as his

  661. own.

  662. Do you

  663. remember back

  664. in chapter

  665. 14,

  666. what Jesus

  667. said to

  668. them?

  669. 1427,

  670. and Jesus

  671. said to

  672. them,

  673. while on

  674. the Mount

  675. of Olives

  676. that just

  677. had the

  678. last supper

  679. before

  680. Gethsemane,

  681. you will

  682. all fall

  683. away for

  684. it is

  685. written,

  686. I will

  687. strike the

  688. shepherd,

  689. and the

  690. sheep will

  691. be scattered,

  692. Zechariah

  693. 13.

  694. 7.

  695. And it

  696. happened.

  697. They had

  698. all abandoned

  699. him.

  700. Despite

  701. their

  702. failures,

  703. Jesus

  704. still claims

  705. them as

  706. his own.

  707. Did you

  708. notice the

  709. angel singles

  710. out Peter?

  711. But go

  712. tell his

  713. disciples and

  714. Peter.

  715. Maybe it's

  716. better understood

  717. if it went

  718. something like

  719. that.

  720. But go

  721. tell his

  722. disciples,

  723. especially

  724. Peter.

  725. Remember

  726. where we

  727. left Peter

  728. at the end

  729. of Mark

  730. 14.

  731. Let me

  732. just point

  733. you there.

  734. Mark

    Mark 14:72

  735. 14,

  736. verse

  737. 72.

  738. The

  739. verse

  740. before

  741. Peter,

  742. third

  743. denial,

  744. he makes

  745. it big.

  746. He calls

  747. down a

  748. curse on

  749. himself,

  750. and he

  751. swears,

  752. I do

  753. not know

  754. this man

  755. of whom

  756. you speak.

  757. Cock-a-doodle-doo.

  758. Do you

  759. remember?

  760. Do you

  761. remember?

  762. Peter

  763. breaks down

  764. and weeps

  765. because

  766. Jesus'

  767. words to

  768. him in

  769. 30 have

  770. come to

  771. pass.

  772. He has

  773. denied

  774. Jesus three

  775. times

  776. before the

  777. cock crowed

  778. twice.

  779. he's

  780. been

  781. exposed

  782. as the

  783. complete

  784. and utter

  785. failure

  786. that he

  787. is.

  788. So he

  789. breaks down

  790. and weeps.

  791. In the

  792. empty tomb,

  793. this angel

  794. speaks

  795. words

  796. that are

  797. full

  798. of

  799. grace.

  800. Forgiveness.

  801. Restoration.

  802. Regathering.

  803. They would

  804. all see

  805. him again

  806. in Galilee,

  807. including

  808. these women.

  809. They would

  810. all be

  811. with him

  812. and he

  813. would forgive

  814. them and

  815. restore them

  816. and regather

  817. them,

  818. even

  819. recommission

  820. them to

  821. go to the

  822. nations,

  823. proclaiming

  824. that he

  825. is a

  826. crucified

  827. and risen

  828. king.

  829. I just

  830. want to

  831. pause here

  832. for a

  833. second.

  834. This is

  835. surprising.

  836. In the

  837. tomb,

  838. this angel

  839. speaks

  840. words full

  841. of grace.

  842. Anyone

  843. in the

  844. room

  845. come into

  846. this

  847. place

  848. this

  849. morning

  850. thinking

  851. that you

  852. are

  853. somehow

  854. unworthy,

  855. that you've

  856. done something

  857. so awful,

  858. so terrible,

  859. that it

  860. is beyond

  861. God's

  862. grace,

  863. that you've

  864. been

  865. permanently

  866. disqualified

  867. from following

  868. Jesus,

  869. that somehow

  870. because of

  871. something you've

  872. done,

  873. you bear the

  874. black mark

  875. in Jesus'

  876. eyes,

  877. and now you

  878. are at

  879. best second

  880. class in

  881. the family

  882. of God.

  883. Anybody

  884. come in

  885. like that?

  886. That you

  887. don't measure

  888. up?

  889. why would

  890. Jesus want

  891. to bother

  892. with me?

  893. I'm a

  894. mess.

  895. I've

  896. sinned

  897. too much.

  898. From the

  899. bloody cross

  900. and the

  901. empty

  902. tomb

  903. issues

  904. forth

  905. some

  906. really good

  907. news for

  908. you.

  909. God's

  910. grace

  911. is greater

  912. than your

  913. failure.

  914. God's

  915. grace is

  916. greater than

  917. your

  918. failure.

  919. It's a

  920. surprise

  921. in the

  922. surprise.

  923. From the

  924. empty tomb,

  925. this angel

  926. speaks words

  927. full of

  928. grace.

  929. If he can

  930. restore Peter,

  931. he certainly

  932. can restore

  933. me.

  934. He can

  935. certainly

  936. restore you.

  937. God's

  938. grace

  939. is greater

  940. than your

  941. failure.

  942. That's

  943. nothing.

  944. There's

  945. more.

  946. You want

  947. to see

  948. another

  949. surprise?

  950. this angel

  951. says,

  952. there you

  953. will see

  954. him just

  955. as he

  956. told you.

  957. Just as

  958. he told

  959. you.

  960. Wait,

  961. Mr.

  962. Angel,

  963. are you

  964. saying that

  965. Jesus told

  966. his disciples

  967. that he

  968. would see

  969. them in

  970. Galilee after

  971. he's been

  972. raised up?

  973. That's

  974. exactly what

  975. he's saying.

  976. Turn back

  977. to Mark

    Mark 14:27

  978. chapter 14

  979. verse 27,

  980. and Jesus

  981. said to

  982. them,

  983. you will

  984. all fall

  985. away for

  986. it is

  987. written,

  988. I will

  989. strike the

  990. shepherd and

  991. the sheep

  992. will be

  993. scattered.

  994. Look at

  995. verse 28.

  996. This is

  997. Jesus

  998. speaking.

  999. But after

  1000. I am

  1001. raised up,

  1002. I will

  1003. go before

  1004. you to

  1005. Galilee.

  1006. Do you

  1007. know what

  1008. this means?

  1009. Jesus

  1010. knew all

  1011. of his

  1012. disciples would

  1013. abandon him.

  1014. and he

  1015. factored it

  1016. in.

  1017. His plan

  1018. all along

  1019. factored in

  1020. their failure

  1021. and his

  1022. forgiving them

  1023. post-resurrection.

  1024. Recommissioning

  1025. them to

  1026. take this

  1027. good news

  1028. of a God

  1029. who became

  1030. man and

  1031. was crucified

  1032. for sins

  1033. and raised

  1034. victorious

  1035. over sin

  1036. and death.

  1037. to take

  1038. that to

  1039. the nations.

  1040. It's all

  1041. according to

  1042. plan.

  1043. And if

  1044. he's able

  1045. to factor

  1046. in the

  1047. failures of

  1048. those early

  1049. disciples,

  1050. he is able

  1051. to factor

  1052. in our

  1053. failures too.

  1054. In fact,

  1055. our God

  1056. specializes

  1057. in pouring

  1058. out grace

  1059. on failures

  1060. to accomplish

  1061. his glorious

  1062. purposes.

  1063. Keeps us

  1064. humble,

  1065. doesn't it?

  1066. There's one

  1067. more

  1068. surprise

  1069. and that

  1070. is

  1071. go tell

  1072. his disciples

  1073. that he is

  1074. going before

  1075. you to

  1076. Galilee.

  1077. Aslan's

  1078. on the

  1079. move.

  1080. He's on

  1081. the move.

  1082. This empty

  1083. tomb is full

  1084. of surprises.

  1085. One surprise

  1086. after another

  1087. he is

  1088. alive.

  1089. He is

  1090. restoring

  1091. grace.

  1092. And he's

  1093. on the

  1094. move.

  1095. Which brings

  1096. us to

  1097. scene three.

  1098. Coming out

  1099. of the

  1100. tomb.

  1101. And they

  1102. went out

  1103. and fled

  1104. from the

  1105. tomb for

  1106. trembling

  1107. in astonishment

  1108. had seized

  1109. them and

  1110. they said

  1111. nothing to

  1112. anyone for

  1113. they were

  1114. afraid.

  1115. I mean,

  1116. seriously,

  1117. could you

  1118. imagine being

  1119. these three

  1120. women at

  1121. this moment?

  1122. They're

  1123. expecting to

  1124. find his

  1125. corpse,

  1126. but they

  1127. find an

  1128. angel

  1129. announcing

  1130. that he

  1131. is risen

  1132. and then

  1133. they're

  1134. like,

  1135. go tell

  1136. his

  1137. disciples

  1138. that you

  1139. all are

  1140. going to

  1141. see him

  1142. in

  1143. Galilee.

  1144. Just like

  1145. he said,

  1146. you're

  1147. like,

  1148. what?

  1149. They went

  1150. to the

  1151. tomb

  1152. mourning

  1153. and they

  1154. come out

  1155. of the

  1156. tomb

  1157. in

  1158. awe.

  1159. Something

  1160. happened.

  1161. all

  1162. these

  1163. surprises

  1164. lying

  1165. within

  1166. the

  1167. empty

  1168. tomb.

  1169. What's

  1170. going on

  1171. here in

  1172. verse 8?

  1173. There's

  1174. trembling,

  1175. which literally

  1176. means shaking,

  1177. astonishment,

  1178. they're totally

  1179. overwhelmed,

  1180. they've been

  1181. seized by

  1182. these feelings,

  1183. which means

  1184. they're

  1185. controlled by

  1186. them,

  1187. they're

  1188. saying

  1189. nothing to

  1190. anyone,

  1191. which means

  1192. they're

  1193. speechless

  1194. in that

  1195. last phrase,

  1196. for they

  1197. were afraid.

  1198. What kind

  1199. of fear

  1200. is this?

  1201. Let's

  1202. rule out

  1203. a couple

  1204. things.

  1205. Well,

  1206. they're

  1207. obviously

  1208. not

  1209. overjoyed,

  1210. happy

  1211. ladies,

  1212. are they?

  1213. We can

  1214. rule that

  1215. out.

  1216. But they

  1217. didn't

  1218. run out

  1219. of the

  1220. tomb

  1221. screaming

  1222. in terror,

  1223. did they?

  1224. What kind

  1225. of fear

  1226. is this?

  1227. We come

  1228. across a

  1229. similar phrase,

  1230. they were

  1231. afraid,

  1232. in Mark

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  1233. chapter 5.

  1234. Jesus

  1235. has just

  1236. released

  1237. a man

  1238. who has

  1239. been ruled

  1240. by a

  1241. legion of

  1242. demons

  1243. for who

  1244. knows how

  1245. long,

  1246. and nobody

  1247. in that

  1248. region could

  1249. subdue him.

  1250. Word gets

  1251. out to the

  1252. people in the

  1253. surrounding city

  1254. and countryside,

  1255. they come to

  1256. him,

  1257. they see

  1258. Jesus,

  1259. they see

  1260. this man

  1261. who they

  1262. could not

  1263. subdue,

  1264. sitting next

  1265. to Jesus,

  1266. clothed in

  1267. his right

  1268. mind,

  1269. and you

  1270. know what

  1271. their response

  1272. was?

  1273. They were

  1274. afraid.

  1275. They

  1276. actually begged

  1277. Jesus to

  1278. leave at

  1279. that point.

  1280. These three

  1281. women,

  1282. they come out

  1283. of the empty

  1284. tomb,

  1285. full of

  1286. surprises,

  1287. he has

  1288. risen,

  1289. and they

  1290. are speechless

  1291. in awe.

  1292. Because they

  1293. are realizing

  1294. that what

  1295. Jesus has

  1296. repeatedly

  1297. said about

  1298. himself has

  1299. come to

  1300. pass.

  1301. I'll be

  1302. raised on

  1303. the third

  1304. day.

  1305. This is not

  1306. disbelief,

  1307. this is not

  1308. unbelief,

  1309. this is

  1310. speechless,

  1311. fear and

  1312. trembling awe.

  1313. They have

  1314. heard,

  1315. and have

  1316. begun to

  1317. believe that

  1318. Jesus is

  1319. alive.

  1320. They went

  1321. to the

  1322. empty tomb

  1323. grieving,

  1324. and they

  1325. flee the

  1326. tomb in

  1327. hopeful

  1328. awe,

  1329. expecting to

  1330. see a

  1331. risen Jesus

  1332. in Galilee.

  1333. The empty

  1334. tomb is full

  1335. of surprises,

  1336. isn't it?

  1337. It changes

  1338. people.

  1339. It changes

  1340. people.

  1341. Jesus is

  1342. alive,

  1343. he's on

  1344. the move,

  1345. they will

  1346. see him

  1347. soon,

  1348. just as

  1349. he has

  1350. said.

  1351. What does

  1352. this mean

  1353. for us?

  1354. What's the

  1355. point?

  1356. The point are

  1357. just really

  1358. three words.

  1359. He has

  1360. risen.

  1361. Let me say

  1362. that,

  1363. you respond.

  1364. He has

  1365. risen.

  1366. Which means

  1367. Jesus is

  1368. alive today.

  1369. Today.

  1370. Today.

  1371. this surprise

  1372. announcement of

  1373. this angel in

  1374. the empty

  1375. tomb, it

  1376. speaks of a

  1377. reality that

  1378. changes everything,

  1379. and it changes

  1380. everything for

  1381. all who believe

  1382. it.

  1383. Do you

  1384. believe that

  1385. Jesus has

  1386. been risen

  1387. from the

  1388. dead?

  1389. Do you

  1390. believe that

  1391. Jesus is

  1392. alive today?

  1393. These three

  1394. little words

  1395. change

  1396. everything.

  1397. He has

  1398. risen.

  1399. It's a

  1400. surprising

  1401. fulfillment.

  1402. This is

  1403. according to

  1404. the scriptures

  1405. of Psalm

  1406. 16 and

  1407. Isaiah 53

  1408. again,

  1409. verse 10.

  1410. His day

  1411. shall be

  1412. prolonged.

  1413. It's all in

  1414. accordance with

  1415. the scriptures,

  1416. but not just

  1417. Old Testament

  1418. scriptures.

  1419. This is

  1420. fulfilling of

  1421. what Jesus

  1422. himself has

  1423. said five

  1424. times in

  1425. Mark.

  1426. He said

  1427. he'd be

  1428. raised from

  1429. the dead.

  1430. Do you

  1431. know anybody

  1432. like that?

  1433. Not only

  1434. know you're

  1435. going to

  1436. die,

  1437. when you're

  1438. going to

  1439. die,

  1440. but then

  1441. you're

  1442. going to

  1443. be raised

  1444. and then

  1445. it happens.

  1446. Who is

  1447. this guy?

  1448. If all

  1449. this is

  1450. true,

  1451. if he died

  1452. for our

  1453. sins and

  1454. was raised

  1455. from the

  1456. dead and

  1457. he's alive

  1458. today,

  1459. if that's

  1460. true,

  1461. then Jesus

  1462. is unlike

  1463. anyone else

  1464. in existence.

  1465. not just

  1466. surprising

  1467. fulfillment,

  1468. but surprising

  1469. grace.

  1470. I mean,

  1471. restorative

  1472. grace.

  1473. These words

  1474. full of grace

  1475. come out of

  1476. the tomb.

  1477. Isn't that

  1478. good news

  1479. for us?

  1480. I needed

  1481. to hear

  1482. that.

  1483. If Jesus

  1484. can restore

  1485. Peter,

  1486. he can

  1487. restore you

  1488. and me.

  1489. This is a

  1490. surprising

  1491. claim.

  1492. he has

  1493. risen.

  1494. It's a

  1495. surprising

  1496. claim.

  1497. People don't

  1498. rise from

  1499. the dead.

  1500. This is a

  1501. God-sized

  1502. miracle.

  1503. And all

  1504. of Christianity

  1505. falls or

  1506. rises on

  1507. these three

  1508. words.

  1509. He has

  1510. risen.

  1511. He's either

  1512. alive today

  1513. or he's

  1514. long dead.

  1515. We're given

  1516. a surprising

  1517. glimpse that

  1518. Jesus is

  1519. on the

  1520. move.

  1521. Aslan

  1522. is on

  1523. the move.

  1524. Today,

  1525. he's at

  1526. work all

  1527. around this

  1528. globe calling

  1529. a people from

  1530. every tribe,

  1531. tongue,

  1532. and nation to

  1533. himself because

  1534. he's been

  1535. given a

  1536. dominion,

  1537. a kingdom,

  1538. everlasting

  1539. and indestructible

  1540. because he is

  1541. the son of

  1542. man.

  1543. Surprising

  1544. glimpse.

  1545. His

  1546. resurrection

  1547. defeated sin.

  1548. His

  1549. resurrection

  1550. defeated death.

  1551. His

  1552. resurrection

  1553. defeated the

  1554. devil.

  1555. And if you

  1556. believe in

  1557. him, you

  1558. are brought

  1559. into that

  1560. victory over

  1561. sin, death,

  1562. and the devil

  1563. too.

  1564. His bloody

  1565. cross and

  1566. his empty

  1567. tomb are

  1568. good news.

  1569. Behold your

  1570. risen king.

  1571. risen.

  1572. How do we

  1573. respond?

  1574. These three

  1575. words, he

  1576. has risen,

  1577. which means

  1578. for us he's

  1579. alive today.

  1580. How do you

  1581. respond to

  1582. that?

  1583. Well, if you're

  1584. not a Christian

  1585. in the room,

  1586. you've got to

  1587. come to terms

  1588. with these

  1589. words.

  1590. They're either

  1591. true or

  1592. they're not.

  1593. Jesus is either

  1594. presently alive

  1595. or he's

  1596. long dead.

  1597. All of

  1598. Christianity

  1599. rises or

  1600. falls on

  1601. it.

  1602. If he

  1603. wasn't raised

  1604. from the

  1605. dead, don't

  1606. waste your

  1607. time with

  1608. Christianity.

  1609. But if he's

  1610. been raised

  1611. from the

  1612. dead, his

  1613. claims of

  1614. being the

  1615. Christ, his

  1616. claims of

  1617. being the

  1618. Son of

  1619. Man and

  1620. the Son

  1621. of God,

  1622. the great

  1623. I Am,

  1624. man, that

  1625. means he's

  1626. the king

  1627. of all.

  1628. God's

  1629. only way

  1630. of salvation,

  1631. the way to

  1632. respond to

  1633. that is

  1634. Romans 10

  1635. 9.

  1636. If we

  1637. confess with

  1638. our mouth

  1639. that Jesus

  1640. is Lord,

  1641. King, and

  1642. believe in

  1643. our hearts

  1644. that God

  1645. raised him

  1646. from the

  1647. dead, you

  1648. will be

  1649. saved, you'll

  1650. be rescued,

  1651. you'll be

  1652. brought into

  1653. the kingdom,

  1654. and the way

  1655. that we

  1656. respond to

  1657. this great

  1658. news is

  1659. confessing

  1660. him and

  1661. then denying

  1662. ourselves,

  1663. taking up

  1664. our cross,

  1665. and following

  1666. him for

  1667. the rest of

  1668. our lives.

  1669. There's a

  1670. group of

  1671. people in

  1672. the room

  1673. that I'm

  1674. concerned

  1675. about that

  1676. I just

  1677. want to

  1678. say, let

  1679. me help

  1680. you think

  1681. this through

  1682. a little

  1683. bit.

  1684. If you've

  1685. grown up

  1686. in the

  1687. church, and

  1688. you've heard

  1689. this good

  1690. news over

  1691. and over

  1692. again, do

  1693. you know

  1694. when it's

  1695. possible to

  1696. respond to

  1697. it?

  1698. It's

  1699. possible to

  1700. respond this

  1701. way.

  1702. Yeah, I

  1703. believe that's

  1704. true, but

  1705. you never

  1706. actually

  1707. commit to

  1708. following

  1709. Jesus.

  1710. You think,

  1711. yeah, I

  1712. agree with

  1713. that, but

  1714. you're still

  1715. living for

  1716. yourself.

  1717. According to

  1718. the New

  1719. Testament,

  1720. those who

  1721. confess Jesus

  1722. as their

  1723. king, then

  1724. deny

  1725. themselves, take

  1726. up their

  1727. cross and

  1728. follow him.

  1729. They commit

  1730. to him.

  1731. if you're

  1732. not a

  1733. Christian, or

  1734. you think

  1735. you're a

  1736. Christian, but

  1737. you're not,

  1738. you need to

  1739. decide whether

  1740. or not the

  1741. resurrection

  1742. actually happened,

  1743. is it true or

  1744. not, and

  1745. then you need

  1746. to decide,

  1747. will I

  1748. commit to

  1749. following

  1750. Jesus?

  1751. For those

  1752. of us who

  1753. are Christians,

  1754. isn't this

  1755. just wonderful

  1756. to hear?

  1757. Our king's

  1758. alive.

  1759. Our Aslan,

  1760. the Lion of

  1761. Judah, is

  1762. alive.

  1763. It's easy

  1764. to forget.

  1765. It's easy

  1766. to fall

  1767. asleep,

  1768. to drift,

  1769. to lose

  1770. sight of

  1771. what matters

  1772. most.

  1773. In those

  1774. three words,

  1775. he has

  1776. risen.

  1777. They're

  1778. like smelling

  1779. salts to

  1780. our souls.

  1781. They wake

  1782. us up.

  1783. They help

  1784. us to

  1785. not just

  1786. stay awake,

  1787. but stay

  1788. awake looking

  1789. for our

  1790. king,

  1791. anticipating

  1792. his return.

  1793. Jesus went

  1794. to the

  1795. tomb dead

  1796. and came

  1797. out of the

  1798. tomb alive

  1799. so that we

  1800. would be

  1801. wholehearted

  1802. followers of

  1803. him.

  1804. To

  1805. treasure

  1806. Jesus above

  1807. all else.

  1808. To

  1809. obey him

  1810. in all

  1811. that he

  1812. commands.

  1813. To

  1814. magnify him

  1815. among all

  1816. people.

  1817. We no longer

  1818. make a name

  1819. for ourselves,

  1820. nor do we

  1821. seek to

  1822. protect our

  1823. reputations

  1824. when it

  1825. comes to

  1826. him.

  1827. We magnify

  1828. him.

  1829. We speak

  1830. of our

  1831. crucified and

  1832. risen king,

  1833. and we

  1834. belong to

  1835. him with

  1836. all who

  1837. treasure him.

  1838. He is

  1839. forming a

  1840. new family

  1841. of faith

  1842. and we

  1843. are bound

  1844. together by

  1845. a love

  1846. that is

  1847. born of

  1848. the spirit.

  1849. Blood

  1850. bought,

  1851. blood bound,

  1852. spirit

  1853. empowered love

  1854. for one another

  1855. in the family.

  1856. We belong to

  1857. one another

  1858. regardless

  1859. of our

  1860. backgrounds,

  1861. regardless of

  1862. skin color,

  1863. regardless of

  1864. salary rates,

  1865. education,

  1866. you name it.

  1867. We belong

  1868. to him with

  1869. all who

  1870. treasure him.

  1871. We're the

  1872. new family

  1873. of faith

  1874. doing his

  1875. will.

  1876. Jesus went

  1877. to the tomb

  1878. and came out

  1879. so that we

  1880. would treasure,

  1881. obey,

  1882. magnify,

  1883. and belong

  1884. to him.

  1885. Because he's

  1886. our one

  1887. consuming

  1888. passion.

  1889. He's our

  1890. all governing

  1891. reality.

  1892. and we

  1893. stay awake.

  1894. In the

  1895. Lion,

  1896. the Witch,

  1897. and the

  1898. Wardrobe,

  1899. after Aslan

  1900. comes back

  1901. to life,

  1902. he travels

  1903. throughout

  1904. Narnia

  1905. breathing his

  1906. life-giving

  1907. breath on

  1908. all his

  1909. own that

  1910. were turned

  1911. to stone

  1912. by the

  1913. White Witch.

  1914. He gives

  1915. them life,

  1916. gathers

  1917. them together,

  1918. and together

  1919. they follow

  1920. Aslan.

  1921. There's no

  1922. one like

  1923. Jesus.

  1924. The Gospel

  1925. of Mark,

  1926. over and

  1927. over again,

  1928. there's no

  1929. one like

  1930. him.

  1931. He's the

  1932. Christ,

  1933. the Son

  1934. of Man,

  1935. the Son

  1936. of God,

  1937. the incarnate

  1938. I Am,

  1939. crucified and

  1940. raised.

  1941. Jesus is

  1942. alive today.

  1943. Do you

  1944. know how

  1945. we respond?

  1946. Deny

  1947. ourselves,

  1948. take up

  1949. our cross,

  1950. follow him,

  1951. and together

  1952. follow Jesus.

  1953. Christ the

  1954. King Church,

  1955. as we head

  1956. into Christmas

  1957. season,

  1958. behold your

  1959. King,

  1960. rejected,

  1961. crucified,

  1962. and raised.

  1963. He is alive.

  1964. Let's pray.

  1965. God in

  1966. heaven,

  1967. Lord Jesus,

  1968. we know

  1969. you're hearing

  1970. us now.

  1971. Thank you

  1972. for what you've

  1973. done for us,

  1974. for both in

  1975. your death

  1976. and resurrection.

  1977. Lord Jesus,

  1978. would you be

  1979. about your

  1980. work and

  1981. would you

  1982. graciously

  1983. allow us

  1984. to be a

  1985. part of

  1986. what you

  1987. are doing

  1988. for your

  1989. namesake?

  1990. Amen.

  1991. Amen.

  1992. Amen.

  1993. Amen.

  1994. Amen.

  1995. Amen.

  1996. Amen.

  1997. Amen.

  1998. Amen.

  1999. Amen.

  2000. Amen.

  2001. Amen.

  2002. Amen.

  2003. Amen.

  2004. Amen.

  2005. Amen.

  2006. Amen.

  2007. Amen.
