  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Colossians chapter 1, in your pew Bibles on page 1168.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  2. You know, it's always good to know where you're going.

  3. This past summer, you all so graciously gave me a seven-week sabbatical.

  4. It was awesome.

  5. And the first four weeks of that was an epic road trip.

  6. So my wife Jenny, our youngest Mary, we all got in our little CRV, and we did this epic road trip west.

  7. But I got to tell you something.

  8. It was all kind of vague until just a couple months beforehand.

  9. And it wasn't until a couple months beforehand that we actually got the itinerary in place where we knew where we were going.

  10. We'd know we were going to go see the mountains in Crested Butte.

  11. And then we were going to go see Zion National Park in Utah.

  12. Then we were going to hit LA and San Diego, Yosemite.

  13. Then we're going to go to the Ruby Mountains in Nevada.

  14. And then show up in the Tetons.

  15. Hit Mount Rushmore.

  16. Badlands.

  17. Waldrug.

  18. And come back home.

  19. Oh man, when we saw this trip laid out on a map and the majesty of the American West laid out before us.

  20. Man, we were ready to go.

  21. It stirred our anticipation.

  22. It's always good to know where you're going.

  23. This morning, my goal is to stir your anticipation.

  24. To let you know where we're going in the book of Colossians.

  25. So that you can see the majesty of Christ Central laid out in this book again and again.

  26. We've got an epic five and a half month journey as a church through this book.

  27. And we're going to see the glories of Christ again and again and again.

  28. So this morning, you may have not heard a sermon like this before.

  29. It's an overview sermon.

  30. What I'm going to do is briefly give you a little background on the book of Colossians.

  31. And then I'm actually going to walk you through the book of Colossians.

  32. There's like seven pearls strung together with one common theme.

  33. I'm going to walk you through it to build your anticipation for what God has for us.

  34. And then I'm going to show you what the argument is.

  35. What the Holy Spirit is wanting to convince us of over the next five and a half months.

  36. And do you know what I'm going to do then?

  37. I'm going to take Colossians 4.16 to heart.

  38. And I'm going to read you the book.

  39. It takes about 11 minutes.

  40. And so we got our work cut out for us.

  41. But let's start with me giving you some background.

  42. First thing to know is who wrote this letter.

  43. By the way, if you're taking notes, don't write anything yet.

  44. Don't waste your note taking space on the background stuff.

  45. When we get to the structure of the book, the itinerary, that's when you start to need to take notes.

  46. So background, who wrote this letter?

  47. Well, we see in chapter 1, verse 1, Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God.

  48. That's the guy who wrote the book.

  49. Now, if you don't know who an apostle is or have never heard that word before,

  50. an apostle is a man who was commissioned by Christ himself and given authority to preach Christ

  51. and to establish the church around the nations.

  52. A unique authority.

  53. There are no more apostles like that anymore.

  54. But that authority continues on today in the writings of the apostles.

  55. So when we read a book like Colossians, we're putting ourselves under the apostolic authority of Paul.

  56. Paul was the small A author of the book of Colossians.

  57. The capital A author is the Holy Spirit.

  58. And the Holy Spirit authored every word, inspired every word of this,

  59. so that Paul wrote down everything that God wanted him to write down for those Colossians and for us, Kenosians.

  60. The thing that you need to know about this book, though, that makes it even more interesting is where Paul wrote it from.

  61. He wrote it from a Roman prison cell.

  62. And so when you see the centrality of Christ throughout this book,

  63. in the midst of all that kind of suffering, it's incredible.

  64. So who wrote the letter?

  65. Well, Paul, an apostle.

  66. Who were the recipients of the letter?

  67. Well, we see that in verse 2.

  68. To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae.

  69. Now, Colossae was a town in what is now modern-day Turkey.

  70. It was Asia Minor, and it was primarily a Gentile town, a non-Jewish town.

  71. Anybody familiar with the seven churches of Revelation chapter 2 and 3?

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  72. Those churches were in Asia Minor, and Colossae was really close to them.

  73. So it's kind of the northern Mediterranean basin, southwestern Turkey today.

  74. And these men and women had been flipped by God's grace in Christ.

  75. They had never met Paul.

  76. They had never seen him face to face.

  77. You'll see that in chapter 2, verse 1.

  78. But what did happen is a guy named Epaphras.

  79. You see this in chapter 1, verse 7.

  80. Just as you learned it from Epaphras, our beloved servant.

  81. Epaphras was a Colossian, and somehow he had become a Christian.

  82. And he went back to Colossae and started making Christ known among his fellow Colossians.

  83. And they started to believe.

  84. They had faith in Jesus Christ, and their eternities changed.

  85. And there was such a response that they were able to gather a church there.

  86. Paul hears about it.

  87. So he writes this letter to them.

  88. Now, Paul, remember, is the small a author of Colossians.

  89. And the Holy Spirit is the capital A author.

  90. That's why this book is not only good for that first century church in Colossae.

  91. It's really good for a 21st century church in Kenosha.

  92. So why was this letter written?

  93. There was a problem.

  94. The church was being influenced by thinking, maybe even better said, a way of being,

  95. that was minimizing Jesus and decentralizing Jesus.

  96. And something else had come into the controlling center of this church.

  97. And so what Paul is going to argue throughout this letter is that Jesus is the controlling center of all things.

  98. Jesus is enough.

  99. You don't need to add to him.

  100. And so what we see here happening in the book of Colossians is Paul correcting a decentralizing of Jesus by recentralizing Jesus.

  101. Anybody benefit from hearing that day in and day out?

  102. We all have a tendency to decentralize Jesus.

  103. This is going to be good news for us.

  104. You're going to see a glorious Christ worthy of your life again and again and again.

  105. So now, that's the background.

  106. Let's get to where the action is.

  107. The structure of the book.

  108. The unfolding of the book.

  109. There are ten pearls here.

  110. No, no.

  111. Seven pearls in Colossians.

  112. And they're all strung together by one central argument.

  113. Now, if you're taking notes, here's what I'd like you to do on the left side of that kind of note-taking space on the back of your bulletin or on a piece of paper.

  114. Just write one, two, three, four, five, six, seven on the left side.

  115. And then I want you to write words next to them.

  116. Number one, intro.

  117. Number two, purpose.

  118. Number three, threat.

  119. Number four.

  120. I know I'm going quick here.

  121. Number four, who with an arrow that points to how.

  122. Number five.

  123. Let me show if I got my facts right.

  124. Household.

  125. Number six, outsiders.

  126. Number seven, network.

  127. Okay, my goal here is to prime the pump of your heart to build into you some kind of anticipation for the goodness that God has for us.

  128. So I'm going to walk you through these seven pearls.

  129. I'm going to walk you through this itinerary.

  130. And I want you to be coming out of this saying, oh, man, this is going to be good for the next five and a half months.

  131. So let me walk you through, starting with number one, intro.

  132. The introduction of Colossians takes up the most space in Colossians.

  133. Believe it or not, it starts in chapter one, verse one, and goes all the way to chapter two, verse five.

  134. So it's a really big introduction.

  135. Paul kind of introduces himself, says hi to the Colossian church.

  136. And then in verses three through eight, he starts giving thanksgiving for what God has started in this church.

  137. They were loving one another.

  138. They had hope.

  139. They had faith in Christ.

  140. So he's like grateful, thankful for what God had done in this Colossian church.

  141. And then in verses nine through 14, he starts praying for the church.

  142. There's an apostolic prayer in your Bible.

  143. There are multiple of them.

  144. One of them is in Colossians chapter one, verses nine through 14.

  145. And he prays something very specific for this church that gets us on what his burden is for this church.

  146. Look at verse nine.

  147. Asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will and all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  148. Verse 10, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him.

  149. What Paul is writing for, what he's getting at in this prayer,

  150. is he's praying something for this church that they would walk in a manner worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  151. Christ central.

  152. Fully pleasing to him.

  153. Christ central.

  154. It's a beautiful passage.

  155. But then he gets into verses 15 through 23, which is kind of like Christological fireworks.

  156. It is believably unbelievable.

  157. And so what the apostle Paul does here is he sets forth this glorious vision for who Jesus is and what he's done.

  158. So in verses 15 through 17, he points to Jesus as being the Lord over all creation.

  159. And then in verses 18 through 20, he points to Jesus as being Lord over all redemption.

  160. He's Lord over all.

  161. He is preeminent over all things and his reign is comprehensive through everything.

  162. Christ central.

  163. There's a reason why this is in the introduction of this book.

  164. The apostle Paul is already centralizing Jesus for this church.

  165. We're going to see this passage played out, echo through the rest of the book.

  166. In chapter 1, verse 24 through 25, again, part of the introduction, the apostle Paul is kind of saying,

  167. okay, this is my labor for you.

  168. This is, this is, this Christ is who I am serving and suffering for so that you would be, verse 28,

  169. so I could present you mature in Christ.

  170. That Christ would be central to your lives.

  171. He starts talking about a mystery in this section.

  172. A mystery revealed.

  173. And that mystery revealed is Christ.

  174. So that's the intro to the book of Colossians.

  175. That's the first pearl.

  176. That's where he starts.

  177. Big Jesus.

  178. And now he moves on in verses 2, 6, and 7 to the purpose.

  179. It's a purpose statement for the book.

  180. Look, you can read it in verse 2, 6.

  181. Therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.

  182. Here, I'm going to read that again.

  183. I'm going to read, therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus the Lord.

  184. And I want you all to say back to me, so walk in him.

  185. Ready?

  186. Therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.

  187. Just as you received Christ Jesus as the Lord over all creation and the Lord over the new creation,

  188. so walk in him.

  189. Central, functional to all that you are.

  190. This is the purpose statement of the book.

  191. Paul is impressing upon this church.

  192. Jesus is enough, and he's central to all that you are and all that you do.

  193. Christ central walking.

  194. That word walk, so walk in him.

  195. You might think kind of like walk.

  196. What he's talking about is like living your life.

  197. Living your life in every detail of your life.

  198. Wherever you find yourself living, that is where you're walking.

  199. And what he's arguing here for is Christ is be the controlling center of all that you do.

  200. So that's the purpose.

  201. Let's move on to the third pearl.

  202. The third pearl is threat.

  203. In verses, chapter 2, verses 8 through 23, Paul identifies the threat to the church in Colossae.

  204. And there is a corresponding threat to the church in Kenosha.

  205. There's this, back in the day, there's this dangerous teaching, a dangerous way of being that was toxic to the church.

  206. Now, this threat came in a particular form.

  207. And it's what's called syncretism.

  208. And what syncretism is, is when a Christian starts adding things that are not necessary or essential,

  209. and adding them to the Christian faith and making them necessary and essential.

  210. Even making them central.

  211. And so instead of this beautiful body of Jesus, the church,

  212. what can happen with syncretism is a Frankenstein beast that stops being Christianity.

  213. And so when you read through verses like 8 through 23,

  214. you see a number of these things that are coming up.

  215. There was this secular influence.

  216. Look at verse 8.

  217. See that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition,

  218. according to the elemental spirits of the world.

  219. And notice that, next phrase, and not according to Christ.

  220. They were buying into some kind of philosophy that had nothing to do with Jesus.

  221. And they were making it important to following Jesus.

  222. And then there's all these kind of religious, Jewish kind of religious references.

  223. There's a phrase talking about verse 11.

  224. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands.

  225. By the circumcision of Christ.

  226. Apparently circumcision was an issue.

  227. Look at verse 16.

  228. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink,

  229. or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

  230. So somebody was influencing the church by saying,

  231. you know what, it really matters what you eat and drink

  232. in order to walking and living for Jesus.

  233. Or it really matters that you keep this religious calendar.

  234. That's really important.

  235. And look what Paul says in verse 17.

  236. These are a shadow of the things to come,

  237. but the substance, the centrality of all things, belongs to Christ.

  238. He goes on to talking about asceticism,

  239. about the worship of angels,

  240. about getting caught up with visions.

  241. And then in verse 20,

  242. he starts talking about 2021.

  243. These things that were being said in the church.

  244. Do not handle.

  245. Do not taste.

  246. Do not touch.

  247. No, no.

  248. No, no.

  249. No.

  250. Don't do that.

  251. No.

  252. No.

  253. And Paul wraps up by saying in verse 23,

  254. hey, these have an appearance of wisdom

  255. in promoting self-made religion,

  256. self-made religion,

  257. Frankenstein religion,

  258. and asceticism and severity to the body,

  259. but they are of no value

  260. in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  261. They are no value to your godliness.

  262. They are no value to living for Christ.

  263. These things are a shadow.

  264. These things can be toxic.

  265. Guess what, gang?

  266. As it was true back in the first century,

  267. it's true in the 21st century.

  268. There are toxins in American culture

  269. that we're breathing in.

  270. And we've got to point them out and say,

  271. no, no, that's not healthy for us.

  272. No, that's not central to our walking with Jesus.

  273. That's at best on the outside.

  274. So there's a real threat going on

  275. to this Colossian church.

  276. The threat of syncretism.

  277. It's still a threat today.

  278. The fourth pearl

  279. is in chapter 3, verses 1 through 17,

  280. and it's actually Paul's response

  281. to this Frankenstein Christianity

  282. that has no value for stopping

  283. the indulgence of the flesh.

  284. It is the who to how

  285. of Christian living.

  286. This is what it means

  287. to truly walk in a manner

  288. worthy of Christ,

  289. walking in a manner that pleases Him.

  290. He says that's not the way

  291. in chapter 2,

  292. and then lays out for us

  293. in chapter 3,

  294. this is the way

  295. to live for Christ.

  296. And what I want you to see

  297. is a very important relationship.

  298. In chapter 3, 1 through 4,

  299. Paul is going to say,

  300. this is who you are in Christ.

  301. And then in chapter 3,

  302. verses 5 through 17,

  303. he says,

  304. and this is how you live for Christ.

  305. Who you are in Christ

  306. determines how you live for Christ.

  307. Who Christ is

  308. and what Christ has done

  309. defines and determines

  310. who we are

  311. and how we live.

  312. This is a very important passage for us

  313. because he's going to get into

  314. the nitty-gritty of some things.

  315. It's going to help us

  316. recognize that Jesus is enough

  317. and Jesus is central

  318. to our daily living.

  319. And so he hits,

  320. in this part of chapter 3,

  321. he hits on Jesus

  322. kind of like general godliness.

  323. It's what progressive sanctification,

  324. becoming more and more like Jesus,

  325. looks like day in and day out.

  326. The fifth pearl

  327. is he now moves

  328. from these general kind of principles

  329. of godly living for Christ

  330. to now living godly lives

  331. in real relationships

  332. with one another.

  333. Household relationships.

  334. And this is chapter 3, verse 18

    Isaiah 3:18

  335. through chapter 4, verse 1.

  336. If you look at it,

  337. it's really interesting.

  338. He identifies three sets of relationships.

  339. He talks about marriage, 18 and 19.

  340. He talks about the family,

  341. children in verse 20,

  342. parents in verse 21.

  343. And then he talks about the workplace.

  344. Bond servants and masters.

  345. We're going to think about that

  346. in terms of

  347. if you are playing some kind of

  348. what's the word?

  349. If you're playing,

  350. I want to say a subservient world,

  351. but that's not it.

  352. The word I'm looking for,

  353. where did I write this word?

  354. Subordinate world.

  355. Sorry about that.

  356. What he's going to address is

  357. how to live as a subordinate

  358. in the workplace

  359. and then how to live

  360. if you're a supervisor

  361. in the workplace.

  362. So it's really interesting

  363. how he lays all this stuff out.

  364. And what I want you to notice

  365. is that Christ is central to it all.

  366. Wives,

  367. you should look at

  368. verse 18.

  369. Wives,

  370. submit to your husbands

  371. as is fitting

  372. in the Lord.

  373. Children,

  374. obey your parents in everything

  375. for this pleases the Lord.

  376. Christ central.

  377. Bond servants,

  378. obey in everything

  379. those who are your earthly masters

  380. fearing the Lord.

  381. Work hardly for the Lord.

  382. You are serving the Lord Christ.

  383. Christ central.

  384. Masters,

  385. supervisors,

  386. treat your subordinates

  387. justly and fairly

  388. knowing that you also have

  389. a supervisor,

  390. Christ central,

  391. in heaven.

  392. Christ central

  393. all the way through.

  394. The next stop

  395. is in chapter 4

  396. verses 2 through 6

  397. and then Paul makes

  398. a very quick move

  399. to those outside the faith.

  400. In verse 2,

  401. he calls this church,

  402. God is calling us

  403. to be praying

  404. watchfully,

  405. evangelistically.

  406. And then in verses 3 and 4,

  407. Paul asks this church

  408. to pray for

  409. his gospel work.

  410. And then in verses 5

  411. through 6,

  412. he moves to the Colossians

  413. themselves

  414. and says,

  415. okay,

  416. this is,

  417. here's some instructions

  418. in order,

  419. how to engage

  420. those outsiders

  421. that you're living among,

  422. those who are not

  423. in Christ

  424. but outside of Christ.

  425. And so,

  426. in verses 2 through 6

  427. of chapter 4,

  428. he's helping us

  429. think evangelistically.

  430. And then finally,

  431. in chapter 4,

  432. verses 7 through 18,

  433. is the close

  434. of the book,

  435. seventh pearl.

  436. And you might

  437. see that

  438. and start thinking,

  439. oh man,

  440. there's a lot of names.

  441. Isn't that interesting?

  442. That's wonderful.

  443. You can dismiss it.

  444. Let's not dismiss it.

  445. The Holy Spirit

  446. has this here

  447. for a reason.

  448. In this passage,

  449. in 7 through 18,

  450. Paul name drops

  451. 10 people.

  452. And if you include himself,

  453. it's 18.

  454. No, verse 18.

  455. Including himself,

  456. it's 11.

  457. But interwoven

  458. throughout these names

  459. are greetings.

  460. Christians from all over

  461. the Mediterranean basin

  462. greeting one another.

  463. There's a network here.

  464. And intermingled

  465. with all these greetings,

  466. Paul is making reference

  467. to this gospel labor

  468. of people who are

  469. seeking to make Christ known

  470. in these cities

  471. around the Mediterranean Sea.

  472. And so what you have here

  473. at the end

  474. of the book of Colossians

  475. is a Christ central

  476. missional network.

  477. The book ends

  478. with this sense

  479. that the Colossian church

  480. is not alone

  481. in what God is doing

  482. around the world.

  483. They have a part to play.

  484. So these are the seven pearls.

  485. This is the itinerary

  486. of the book of Colossians.

  487. There is a lot here.

  488. But there is a cord

  489. holding all these pearls together.

  490. All these seven distinct moves.

  491. They unfold

  492. with one common theme.

  493. Christ central.

  494. Christ preeminent over all.

  495. Christ comprehensively reigning

  496. through all.

  497. The main argument of the book

  498. is not just that Christ

  499. is central.

  500. The main argument

  501. of the book

  502. is that Christ

  503. is the functional

  504. center of our lives.

  505. He controls

  506. and determines everything.

  507. You can say it this way.

  508. Because of who Christ is

  509. and what Christ has done,

  510. what Christ is doing,

  511. He must

  512. be the controlling center

  513. of who we are

  514. and what we do.

  515. Christ

  516. central.

  517. Jesus is enough.

  518. I hope it's kind of

  519. stirring some anticipation

  520. in you.

  521. We've got some

  522. majesty of Jesus

  523. coming our way

  524. through the book

  525. of Colossians.

  526. So now what I'd like

  527. to do is

  528. read the book

  529. of Colossians to you.

  530. In chapter 4,

  531. verse 16,

  532. Paul says,

  533. and when this letter

  534. has been read among you,

  535. have it also read

  536. in the church

  537. of the Laodiceans.

  538. This letter

  539. was meant to be read.

  540. This letter was meant

  541. to be heard

  542. by Christians.

  543. So I'm going to read it

  544. and I'm going to ask you

  545. right now,

  546. ask the Lord,

  547. Lord instruct me

  548. as I listen.

  549. Paul,

  550. an apostle of Christ Jesus

  551. by the will of God

  552. and Timothy,

  553. our brother,

  554. to the saints

  555. and faithful brothers

  556. in Christ

  557. at Colossae,

  558. grace to you

  559. and peace

  560. from God our Father.

  561. We always thank God

  562. the Father

  563. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  564. when we pray for you

  565. since we heard

  566. of your faith

  567. in Christ Jesus

  568. and of the love

  569. that you have

  570. for all the saints

  571. because of the hope

  572. laid up for you

  573. in heaven.

  574. Of this you have heard

  575. before

  576. in the word of truth,

  577. the gospel,

  578. which has come to you

  579. as indeed in the whole world

  580. it is bearing fruit

  581. and increasing

  582. as it also does

  583. among you

  584. since the day you heard it

  585. and understood the grace

  586. of God in truth

  587. just as you learned it

  588. from Epaphras,

  589. our beloved fellow servant.

  590. He is a faithful minister

  591. of Christ on your behalf

  592. and has made known to us

  593. your love in the Spirit.

  594. And so from the day we heard,

  595. we have not ceased

  596. to pray for you

  597. asking that you may be filled

  598. with the knowledge

  599. of his will

  600. in all spiritual wisdom

  601. and understanding

  602. so as to walk

  603. in a manner worthy

  604. of the Lord,

  605. fully pleasing to him,

  606. bearing fruit

  607. in every good work

  608. and in increasing

  609. in knowledge of God,

  610. being strengthened

  611. with all power

  612. according to his glorious might

  613. for all endurance

  614. and patience

  615. with joy,

  616. giving thanks to the Father

  617. who has qualified you

  618. to share in the inheritance

  619. of the saints in light.

  620. He has delivered us

  621. from the domain of darkness

  622. and transferred us

  623. to the kingdom

  624. of his beloved Son

  625. in whom we have redemption,

  626. the forgiveness of sins.

  627. And then he starts

  628. talking about Jesus.

  629. He is the image

  630. of the invisible God,

  631. the firstborn of all creation.

  632. For by him,

  633. all things were created

  634. in heaven and on earth,

  635. visible and invisible,

  636. whether thrones

  637. or dominions

  638. or rulers or authorities,

  639. all things were created

  640. through him

  641. and for him.

  642. And he is before all things

  643. and in him,

  644. all things hold together.

  645. And he is the head

  646. of the body,

  647. the church.

  648. He's the beginning,

  649. the firstborn from the dead,

  650. that in everything

  651. he might be preeminent.

  652. For in him,

  653. all the fullness of God

  654. was pleased to dwell

  655. and through him

  656. to reconcile to himself

  657. all things,

  658. whether on earth

  659. or in heaven,

  660. making peace

  661. by the blood of his cross.

  662. And you,

  663. who once were alienated

  664. and hostile in mind,

  665. doing evil things,

  666. he has now reconciled

  667. in his body of flesh

  668. by his death

  669. in order to present you

  670. holy and blameless

  671. and above reproach

  672. before him,

  673. if indeed you continue

  674. in the faith,

  675. stable and steadfast,

  676. not shifting from the hope

  677. of the gospel

  678. that you have heard,

  679. which has been proclaimed

  680. in all creation

  681. under heaven

  682. and of which I,

  683. Paul,

  684. became a minister,

  685. now I rejoice

  686. in my sufferings

  687. for your sake.

  688. And in my flesh

  689. I am filling up

  690. what is lacking

  691. in Christ's affliction

  692. for the sake

  693. of his body,

  694. that is the church,

  695. of which I became

  696. a minister

  697. according to the stewardship

  698. from God

  699. that was given to me

  700. for you

  701. to make the word

  702. of God fully known.

  703. The mystery,

  704. hidden for ages

  705. and generations,

  706. but now revealed

  707. to his saints,

  708. to them God

  709. chose to make known

  710. how great among

  711. the Gentiles

  712. are the riches

  713. of the glory

  714. of this mystery

  715. which is Christ

  716. in you,

  717. the hope of glory.

  718. Him we proclaim,

  719. warning everyone

  720. and teaching everyone

  721. with all wisdom

  722. that we may present

  723. to everyone

  724. mature in Christ.

  725. For this I toil,

  726. struggling with all

  727. his energy

  728. that he powerfully

  729. works within me.

  730. For I want you to know

  731. how great a struggle

  732. I have for you

  733. and for those

  734. that Laodicea

  735. and for all

  736. who have not seen

  737. me face to face,

  738. that their hearts

  739. may be encouraged

  740. being knit together

  741. in love

  742. to reach all the riches

  743. of the fullness

  744. of assurance

  745. of understanding

  746. and the knowledge

  747. of God's mystery

  748. which is Christ

  749. in whom are hidden

  750. all treasures

  751. of wisdom

  752. and knowledge.

  753. I say this

  754. in order that

  755. no one may delude you

  756. with plausible arguments

  757. for though I am

  758. absent in the body

  759. yet I am with you

  760. in spirit

  761. rejoicing to see

  762. your good order

  763. in the firmness

  764. of your faith

  765. in Christ.

  766. Therefore,

  767. as you receive

  768. Christ Jesus the Lord,

  769. so walk in him.

  770. Rooted and built up

  771. in him

  772. and established

  773. in the faith

  774. just as you were taught

  775. abounding in thanksgiving.

  776. See to it

  777. that no one

  778. takes you captive

  779. by philosophy

  780. and empty conceit

  781. according to human tradition,

  782. according to the elemental

  783. spirits of the world

  784. and not according

  785. to Christ.

  786. For in him

  787. the whole fullness

  788. of deity dwells bodily

  789. and you have been

  790. filled in him

  791. who is the head

  792. of all rule

  793. and authority.

  794. In him also

  795. you were circumcised

  796. with a circumcision

  797. made without hands

  798. by putting off

  799. the body of the flesh

  800. by the circumcision

  801. of Christ

  802. having been buried

  803. with him in baptism

  804. in which you were also

  805. raised with him

  806. through faith

  807. in the powerful

  808. working of God

  809. who raised him

  810. from the dead.

  811. And you

  812. who were dead

  813. in your trespasses

  814. in the uncircumcision

  815. of your flesh

  816. God made alive

  817. together with him

  818. having forgiven us

  819. all our trespasses

  820. by canceling

  821. the record of debt

  822. that stood against us

  823. with its legal demands

  824. this he set aside

  825. nailing it to the cross

  826. he disarmed the rulers

  827. and the authorities

  828. and put them

  829. to open shame

  830. by triumphing over them

  831. in him.

  832. Therefore

  833. let no one

  834. pass judgment on you

  835. in questions of food

  836. and drink

  837. or with regard

  838. to a festival

  839. or a new moon

  840. or a Sabbath

  841. these are a shadow

  842. of the things to come

  843. but the substance

  844. belongs to Christ.

  845. Let no one

  846. disqualify you

  847. insisting on asceticism

  848. and the worship

  849. of angels

  850. going on in detail

  851. about visions

  852. puffed up without reason

  853. by a sensuous mind

  854. and not holding fast

  855. to the head

  856. from whom the whole body

  857. nourished and knit together

  858. through its joints

  859. and ligaments

  860. grows with the growth

  861. that is from God.

  862. If with Christ

  863. you die

  864. to the elemental spirits

  865. of the world

  866. why

  867. as if you were still

  868. alive in the world

  869. do you submit

  870. to regulations

  871. do not handle

  872. do not taste

  873. do not touch

  874. referring to things

  875. that all perish

  876. as they are used

  877. according to human

  878. precepts and teachings.

  879. These have indeed

  880. an appearance of wisdom

  881. in promoting

  882. self-made religion

  883. and asceticism

  884. in severity

  885. to the body

  886. but they

  887. are of no value

  888. in stopping

  889. the indulgence

  890. of the flesh.

  891. If then

  892. you've been raised

  893. with Christ

  894. seek the things

  895. that are above

  896. where Christ is

  897. seated

  898. at the right hand

  899. of God.

  900. set your minds

  901. on things

  902. that are above

  903. not on things

  904. that are on earth

  905. for you have died

  906. and your life

  907. is hidden

  908. with Christ

  909. in God

  910. when Christ

  911. who is

  912. your life

  913. appears

  914. then you also

  915. will appear

  916. with him

  917. in glory.

  918. Put to death

  919. therefore

  920. what is earthly

  921. in you

  922. sexual immorality

  923. impurity

  924. passion

  925. evil desire

  926. and covetousness

  927. which is

  928. idolatry

  929. on account

  930. of these

  931. the wrath

  932. of God

  933. is coming

  934. in these

  935. you too

  936. once walked

  937. when you were

  938. living in them

  939. but now

  940. you must put

  941. them all away

  942. anger

  943. wrath

  944. malice

  945. slander

  946. and obscene

  947. talk from your mouth

  948. do not lie

  949. to one another

  950. seeing that you

  951. have put off

  952. the old self

  953. with its practices

  954. and put

  955. have put on

  956. the new self

  957. which is being

  958. renewed in the

  959. knowledge after

  960. the image

  961. of its creator

  962. a reference

  963. to Jesus

  964. here there is

  965. not Greek

  966. and Jew

  967. circumcised

  968. and uncircumcised

  969. barbarian

  970. Scythian

  971. slave

  972. free

  973. but Christ

  974. is all

  975. and in all

  976. put on then

  977. as God's chosen

  978. ones

  979. holy and beloved

  980. compassionate

  981. hearts

  982. kindness

  983. humility

  984. meekness

  985. and patience

  986. bearing with one

  987. another

  988. and if

  989. one has a

  990. complaint against

  991. another

  992. forgiving each

  993. other

  994. as the Lord

  995. has forgiven

  996. you

  997. so you

  998. also

  999. must

  1000. forgive

  1001. and above

  1002. all these

  1003. put on

  1004. love

  1005. which binds

  1006. everything

  1007. together

  1008. in perfect

  1009. harmony

  1010. and let

  1011. the peace

  1012. of Christ

  1013. rule in

  1014. your hearts

  1015. to which

  1016. indeed

  1017. you were

  1018. called

  1019. in one

  1020. body

  1021. and be

  1022. thankful

  1023. let the

  1024. word of

  1025. Christ

  1026. dwell

  1027. in you

  1028. richly

  1029. teaching

  1030. and admonishing

  1031. one another

  1032. in all wisdom

  1033. singing songs

  1034. and hymns

  1035. and spiritual

  1036. songs

  1037. with thankfulness

  1038. in your

  1039. hearts

  1040. to God

  1041. and whatever

  1042. you do

  1043. in word

  1044. or deed

  1045. do

  1046. everything

  1047. in the name

  1048. of the Lord

  1049. Jesus

  1050. giving thanks

  1051. to God

  1052. the Father

  1053. through him

  1054. wives

  1055. submit to your

  1056. husbands

  1057. as is fitting

  1058. in the Lord

  1059. husbands

  1060. love your

  1061. wives

  1062. and do not

  1063. be harsh

  1064. with them

  1065. children

  1066. obey your

  1067. parents

  1068. in everything

  1069. for this

  1070. pleases

  1071. the Lord

  1072. fathers

  1073. do not

  1074. provoke

  1075. your children

  1076. lest they

  1077. become

  1078. discouraged

  1079. bond

  1080. servants

  1081. subordinates

  1082. obey in

  1083. everything

  1084. those who

  1085. are your

  1086. earthly

  1087. masters

  1088. not by way

  1089. of eye

  1090. service

  1091. as people

  1092. pleasers

  1093. but with

  1094. sincerity

  1095. of heart

  1096. fearing

  1097. the Lord

  1098. whatever

  1099. you do

  1100. bond

  1101. servant

  1102. subordinate

  1103. work

  1104. heartily

  1105. as for

  1106. the Lord

  1107. and not

  1108. for men

  1109. knowing that

  1110. from the

  1111. Lord

  1112. you will

  1113. receive

  1114. the

  1115. inheritance

  1116. as your

  1117. reward

  1118. you are

  1119. serving

  1120. the Lord

  1121. Christ

  1122. for the

  1123. wrongdoer

  1124. will be

  1125. paid

  1126. back

  1127. for the

  1128. wrong

  1129. he has

  1130. done

  1131. and there

  1132. is no

  1133. partiality

  1134. masters

  1135. treat

  1136. your

  1137. bond

  1138. servants

  1139. supervisors

  1140. treat

  1141. your

  1142. subordinates

  1143. justly

  1144. and fairly

  1145. knowing

  1146. that you

  1147. also

  1148. have

  1149. the

  1150. ultimate

  1151. supervisor

  1152. in heaven

  1153. continue

  1154. steadfastly

  1155. in prayer

  1156. being watchful

  1157. in it

  1158. with thanksgiving

  1159. at the same

  1160. time

  1161. pray also

  1162. for us

  1163. that God

  1164. may

  1165. open to

  1166. us

  1167. a door

  1168. for the

  1169. word

  1170. to declare

  1171. the mystery

  1172. of Christ

  1173. on account

  1174. of which

  1175. I am

  1176. in prison

  1177. that I

  1178. make it

  1179. clear

  1180. which is

  1181. how I

  1182. ought to

  1183. speak

  1184. walk in

  1185. wisdom

  1186. toward

  1187. outsiders

  1188. making

  1189. the best

  1190. use

  1191. of the

  1192. time

  1193. let your

  1194. speech

  1195. always be

  1196. gracious

  1197. seasoned

  1198. with salt

  1199. so that

  1200. you may

  1201. know

  1202. how you

  1203. ought

  1204. to

  1205. answer

  1206. each

  1207. person

  1208. Tychicus

  1209. will tell
