  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Colossians chapter 1 verses 3 through 8,

    Colossians 1:3–8

  2. it's on page 1168 in your pew Bible, which is in your pew.

  3. Now, if you're new to a Christian service like this,

  4. what I'm about to do is I'm going to preach from the Bible.

  5. And so I'm going to read this passage,

  6. and then I'm going to proclaim it and explain it and apply it to our lives.

  7. So that's what I'll be doing for the next several minutes.

  8. Let me read Colossians 1, 3 through 8.

  9. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.

  10. Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,

  11. because of the hope laid up for you in heaven,

  12. of this you have heard before in the word of truth,

  13. the gospel which has come to you,

  14. as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing,

  15. as it always does among you,

  16. since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God and truth,

  17. just as you learned it from Epaphras,

  18. our beloved fellow servant.

  19. He is a faithful minister of God on your behalf,

  20. and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

  21. May God bless the hearing of His word.

  22. Now if I were to ask you this question,

  23. if you were to describe what I just read,

  24. in terms of darkness or brightness,

  25. how would you describe it?

  26. Is verses 3 through 8 dark?

  27. Or is it bright?

  28. And I'm guessing you all would say something like,

  29. it's bright.

  30. It's bright because it's full of thanksgiving to God.

  31. And the Colossian church,

  32. the group of Christians 20 centuries ago

  33. who first received this,

  34. they would have been encouraged by this.

  35. They would have been assured by this.

  36. But could you imagine if the Apostle Paul started off

  37. with a little something more dark?

  38. Like this.

  39. Saints in Colossae, it's Paul.

  40. You all are such a headache.

  41. If what Epaphras told us is true,

  42. you all can't seem to recognize a basic false teaching

  43. that is distracting you from the centrality of Christ.

  44. Seriously?

  45. You all need to get your act together

  46. because I'm starting to wonder

  47. if you all are worth my time and suffering.

  48. Lovesies.

  49. T-A-P.

  50. The Apostle Paul.

  51. Now could you imagine if you were in the room

  52. when this letter starting that way was first read?

  53. If you were in that church,

  54. I'm guessing you'd be like,

  55. oh man.

  56. Discouraged.

  57. Devastated perhaps.

  58. Doubtful even.

  59. This is not a dark start to Colossians.

  60. This is a bright start of thanksgiving to God.

  61. And these verses are extraordinary

  62. because of the thankfulness of them,

  63. because of the brightness.

  64. Throughout the week,

  65. you're inundated with messages

  66. that are not bright with thanksgiving,

  67. but are dark with hopelessness.

  68. And what makes this even more extraordinary

  69. is when you realize where Paul is writing from.

  70. He's writing from a prison in Rome.

  71. Just feet from him is a Praetorian guard.

  72. He's waiting on whether he is going to die or not.

  73. And in the depths of that darkness of circumstance

  74. comes this bright thanksgiving.

  75. How can somebody

  76. under these circumstances

  77. be so thankful?

  78. Have you heard the hymn,

  79. Prone to Wander?

  80. Prone to grumble.

  81. Lord, I feel it.

  82. Prone to grumble

  83. against the God I love.

  84. Brothers and sisters,

  85. what's at the heart of thanksgiving?

  86. What's at the heart of Christian thanksgiving?

  87. Because I don't know about you,

  88. but I need it.

  89. Do you need it?

  90. Yes and amen.

  91. We all need it.

  92. And in this passage,

  93. what is going to become clear

  94. is at the heart of the Apostle Paul's

  95. thanksgiving in brightness

  96. is a Christ centrality

  97. that makes him others focused.

  98. Christ.

  99. And we're going to see that played out

  100. as he gives us three reasons for his thanksgiving.

  101. Reason number one is going to be this.

  102. God's proofs of purchase.

  103. Reason number two is God's global work.

  104. And the third reason for this thankfulness

  105. is a particular faithful servant of Jesus.

  106. What's at the center of all

  107. is a Christ-centered others orientation

  108. that makes this apostle pray this way.

  109. And I find it super compelling.

  110. At the center of it all is Christ.

  111. Christ.

  112. So let's get into this.

  113. The reason one for Paul's thanksgiving.

  114. Why he would say,

  115. we always thank God when we pray for you.

  116. That's extraordinary.

  117. Why?

  118. Reason number one is in verses four through five.

  119. God's proofs of purchase.

  120. And I'm using proofs

  121. because there's more than one proof.

  122. The first proof of purchase

  123. is in verse four.

  124. We always thank God when we pray for you

  125. since we heard of your faith

  126. in Christ Jesus.

  127. Faith, of course, is an active trust.

  128. Last month I was talking about faith

  129. as an exercise of like stepping out onto ice.

  130. And that ice is the object of your faith.

  131. What you're putting your faith in.

  132. When it comes to Christianity,

  133. we are putting our faith,

  134. not in ourselves.

  135. We're not putting our faith in our faith.

  136. We're putting our faith in Christ Jesus.

  137. And so what Paul is saying here

  138. is he's giving thanks to God

  139. whenever he prays for these Colossians

  140. because of their faith in Christ Jesus.

  141. That he's totally God, totally man.

  142. That Jesus has hung on a cross

  143. for six hours on a particular Friday

  144. to bear all of God's wrath

  145. for all who would ever believe.

  146. Salvation is in no one else.

  147. You know, the result of this kind of saving faith,

  148. you read it in Colossians chapter one,

  149. verses 13 and 14.

  150. For those who believe,

  151. he's delivered us from the domain of darkness

  152. and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved son

  153. in whom we have redemption,

  154. the forgiveness of sins.

  155. You get flipped by God's grace.

  156. So the first thing that fuels Paul's thanksgiving,

  157. the first proof here,

  158. is their actual faith in Christ.

  159. Now, I find it interesting

  160. that the Apostle Paul gives thanks to God

  161. for the Colossians' faith in Christ.

  162. Now, don't you find that interesting?

  163. The second proof

  164. is found in verse four,

  165. and of the love that you have for all the saints.

  166. The love that Paul is talking about

  167. is a distinct love among Christians.

  168. It is the hallmark virtue of all Christians.

  169. It's what we're to be known most for,

  170. our love for one another.

  171. It's the sticky love.

  172. Not sticky gross, sticky good.

  173. That Jesus commands us to in John 13.

  174. Let me read you this.

  175. This is the new commandment that he gives us.

  176. A new commandment I give to you

  177. that you love one another

  178. just as I have loved you.

  179. You also are to love one another.

  180. By this, all people will know

  181. that you are my disciples

  182. if you have love for one another.

  183. A sacrificial love.

  184. A love that goes beyond stereotypes.

  185. A love that goes beyond gender.

  186. A love that goes beyond race.

  187. A love that goes beyond economic background.

  188. What baggage you got.

  189. It's I love you the way that Christ loves me,

  190. and that is a furious love.

  191. And the Colossians were loving each other that way.

  192. All the saints.

  193. Now I find it interesting

  194. that Paul is actually thanking God

  195. for the way that these Colossians

  196. are loving one another.

  197. Don't you?

  198. The third proof is in verse 5.

  199. Because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.

  200. What is this hope

  201. that the Apostle Paul is writing about

  202. from his prison cell?

  203. Look at chapter 3, verses 1 and 2.

  204. We don't need to speculate.

  205. We just look in the context.

  206. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  207. seek the things that are above.

  208. Huh.

  209. Hope.

  210. You know, up in heaven.

  211. Where Christ is.

  212. Seated at the right hand of God.

  213. Set your minds on the things that are above,

  214. not on the things that are on earth.

  215. The hope that Paul is talking about

  216. that's stored up for these Colossians

  217. is none other than the risen and reigning Jesus Christ.

  218. Are you following this?

  219. Faith in Christ.

  220. Love like Christ.

  221. Hope in Christ.

  222. The hope that Jesus is not just risen,

  223. but He's reigning.

  224. All things have been put under His feet.

  225. And He's bringing His reign to bear

  226. all across the world today.

  227. He is our hope.

  228. There's something interesting in verses 4 and 5.

  229. There's an interesting relationship

  230. between the Colossians' love for all the saints

  231. and their hope that is laid up for them in heaven.

  232. Look at the first word of verse 5.

  233. It's the word because.

  234. Do you know what the Apostle Paul is saying?

  235. Do you know what the Apostle Paul is saying?

  236. That this church loves all the saints

  237. because of this hope laid up for them in heaven.

  238. Because Jesus is risen and reigning,

  239. they love each other furiously.

  240. It's interesting though,

  241. that Paul is thanking God for their hope.

  242. He's not thanking the Colossians.

  243. He's not thanking Colossians,

  244. thank you so much for being so full of faith towards Jesus.

  245. Colossians, thank you so much for your love for one another.

  246. Thank you so much for the hope laid up for you in heaven.

  247. Do you know why Paul is thanking God for these things that he sees,

  248. he's heard of in the Colossians?

  249. Because it's all God's grace.

  250. This is all God's grace in the Colossian church.

  251. Their faith in Christ is a result of God's grace in their life.

  252. Their love for one another is a result of God's grace in their life.

  253. Their hope laid up for them in heaven is God's grace to them.

  254. Nothing they earned in their three proofs of purchase.

  255. Do you know what a proof of purchase is?

  256. Let me give you an example.

  257. I walk into Piggly Wiggly.

  258. I walk three miles to the dairy department

  259. because they always put in the back of the room.

  260. I grab a gallon of milk.

  261. I walk up to the checkout aisle.

  262. The checkout person checks me out.

  263. And then they put an orange sticker on the milk gallon

  264. with a smiley, piggly, wiggly face.

  265. Do you know what I'm talking about?

  266. Do you know what that is?

  267. It's a proof of purchase.

  268. So when I'm leaving the building

  269. and someone stops me as a potential thief,

  270. I hold up my milk jug and say,

  271. proof of purchase!

  272. I've never done that.

  273. I'm being a little dramatic.

  274. But what Paul is saying here is this.

  275. Your love for one another,

  276. your faith in Christ,

  277. your hope in Jesus risen and reigning,

  278. proofs of purchase.

  279. You've been bought by the blood of Jesus.

  280. That's what he's saying.

  281. That's what he's thankful for.

  282. And there's a beauty to it, isn't there?

  283. They've been flipped by God's grace.

  284. You know, when the Colossians heard this read to them

  285. for the first time,

  286. you know what the effect of them would be?

  287. All glory to God.

  288. Thank you, God, for what you're doing in our midst.

  289. It's Godward.

  290. It's Christ-centered.

  291. It's others-oriented.

  292. Now, the question that I want to ask for us right now

  293. before we move on to the second reason for this Thanksgiving

  294. is ask this question,

  295. so what?

  296. What difference does this make 20 centuries later?

  297. Well, here's the first difference.

  298. Does anybody have a lagging prayer life?

  299. This will jumpstart your prayer life.

  300. When you start praying Christ-centered,

  301. God-thanking prayers

  302. that are focused on others,

  303. you know what I've been doing for the last,

  304. several hours, last few days,

  305. I've been thanking God.

  306. We were down outside Chicago

  307. for my dad's birthday yesterday,

  308. and I've been thanking God

  309. for the faith of my father,

  310. for the love my dad has shown the saints,

  311. for the hope he has

  312. that's in heaven.

  313. Thank you, God,

  314. for your work of grace

  315. and Steve Salvati.

  316. Man, that jumpstarts your prayer life.

  317. Christ-centered,

  318. God-thanking,

  319. others-oriented.

  320. The second thing

  321. that I just want to point out,

  322. this,

  323. there's a kingdom priority going on here.

  324. I find it really interesting

  325. what Paul chooses to focus on

  326. in his thanksgiving

  327. in verses 4 and 5.

  328. He could have said this,

  329. I give thanks to God,

  330. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  331. whenever I pray for you,

  332. for all of the speaking in tongues

  333. you're doing,

  334. for all the prophecies being given,

  335. for all the healings

  336. that have been being made.

  337. I thank God

  338. for all the really personal

  339. and meaningful worship experiences

  340. you've been having

  341. on a Sunday morning.

  342. He doesn't do that.

  343. He's not denying that.

  344. But he's prioritizing something.

  345. Faith.

  346. Love.

  347. Hope.

  348. This is the holy triad.

  349. We see it showing up

  350. in 1 Corinthians 13, 13.

  351. The greatest of which is love.

  352. Because love never ends.

  353. I find that very instructive

  354. in terms of

  355. what we must be prioritizing,

  356. what we must be valuing,

  357. what we're looking for

  358. when we're looking on

  359. our brothers and sisters

  360. and we're looking to spy

  361. God's grace at work.

  362. We're looking for faith in Christ.

  363. We're looking for love

  364. for the saints.

  365. We're looking for hope

  366. in the risen and reigning

  367. and soon to be returning Jesus.

  368. God's grace at us.

  369. It's instructive.

  370. It's helpful.

  371. Now I don't know about you

  372. but

  373. I want to be like that.

  374. I want to pray like that.

  375. I want to prioritize like that.

  376. I want to be Christ-centered

  377. others oriented.

  378. Do you?

  379. Reason one,

  380. God's proofs of purchase.

  381. Reason two,

  382. God's global work.

  383. work.

  384. In verse five,

  385. we read this,

  386. because of the hope

  387. laid up for you in heaven,

  388. of this,

  389. it's a reference to the hope

  390. laid up for them in heaven,

  391. of this hope laid up for you

  392. in heaven,

  393. you heard before

  394. in the word of truth

  395. the gospel.

  396. That word gospel,

  397. it's a word that many of us

  398. hear often

  399. but back in antiquity

  400. when that word

  401. is being used

  402. more generally,

  403. it was being used

  404. to talk about

  405. the announcement

  406. of any good thing.

  407. The good news of a birth.

  408. The good news of a military victory.

  409. The good news of a job promotion.

  410. The gospel.

  411. Oh yeah,

  412. I got gospel news.

  413. You know,

  414. my niece has been born.

  415. The Christian gospel

  416. is good news

  417. announcing who Jesus is

  418. and what he's done.

  419. It's a gospel

  420. unlike any other gospel.

  421. There's no good news like it

  422. because God became a man,

  423. he lived a perfect life,

  424. died on the cross for sinners,

  425. was raised from the dead,

  426. he's risen and reigning

  427. at the right hand of God

  428. on high

  429. and he's one day closer

  430. to his return

  431. and it's all good news.

  432. The gospel puts Jesus

  433. at the center of everything.

  434. The gospel of Jesus Christ.

  435. And did you notice

  436. that little phrase,

  437. the word of truth?

  438. You heard about

  439. the risen and reigning Christ

  440. from the word of truth,

  441. the gospel.

  442. That phrase,

  443. the word of truth

  444. and the gospel

  445. are being used synonymously.

  446. The word of truth

  447. is the gospel,

  448. the gospel is the word of truth,

  449. but the word of truth

  450. has a little different nuance to it.

  451. It's like this.

  452. Think about the word of truth,

  453. that phrase,

  454. as this.

  455. God's claim on reality.

  456. This is the way things are.

  457. The word of truth.

  458. God's saying,

  459. this is what is true.

  460. And what he's saying is true

  461. is that Jesus Christ

  462. is the center of everything.

  463. Christ central.

  464. You know,

  465. if everything was a solar system,

  466. Jesus Christ

  467. is the son

  468. of that solar system.

  469. Everything

  470. orbits

  471. Jesus.

  472. We're going to see

  473. in a couple weeks,

  474. he's the creator of all

  475. and the sustainer of all.

  476. He is the savior of all.

  477. All things

  478. orbit

  479. him.

  480. Which means this,

  481. when someone believes

  482. in the gospel

  483. and they are delivered

  484. from the domain of darkness

  485. and transferred

  486. into the kingdom

  487. of the beloved son,

  488. they are being put

  489. in right orbit.

  490. They are being brought

  491. into reality.

  492. The way things

  493. truly are.

  494. Christ

  495. central.

  496. So what we see

  497. going on here

  498. in verse

  499. five

  500. is

  501. the apostle Paul

  502. starts talking about

  503. this gospel

  504. gospel.

  505. Now look at it

  506. in verse six.

  507. The gospel

  508. which has come to you.

  509. The which is a reference

  510. to the gospel.

  511. The gospel has come to you,

  512. Colossians.

  513. As indeed in the whole world,

  514. it,

  515. the gospel,

  516. is bearing fruit

  517. and increasing.

  518. As it,

  519. the gospel,

  520. also does among you

  521. since the day you heard

  522. it,

  523. the gospel,

  524. and understood the grace

  525. of God and truth.

  526. Another reference

  527. to the gospel.

  528. Just as you learned

  529. it,

  530. the gospel,

  531. verse seven,

  532. from Epaphras,

  533. our beloved fellow servant.

  534. The gospel is all over the place

  535. in five,

  536. six,

  537. and seven.

  538. The gospel of Jesus Christ.

  539. Did you notice

  540. the global scope

  541. going on here?

  542. As indeed

  543. the whole world.

  544. God,

  545. through the gospel

  546. of Jesus Christ,

  547. is seeking

  548. to do something

  549. throughout

  550. all of creation,

  551. all of fallen creation,

  552. all the earth,

  553. the whole world,

  554. all people,

  555. all time,

  556. every place.

  557. It's a big plan

  558. for the fullness

  559. of time.

  560. It's a global work.

  561. And did you notice

  562. the filling effect

  563. of the gospel?

  564. Not only is it global

  565. in its scope,

  566. it's looking to fill

  567. the world.

  568. Which has come to you

  569. indeed in the whole world.

  570. It is bearing fruit

  571. and increasing

  572. as it also does

  573. among you.

  574. Whole world,

  575. bearing fruit,

  576. increasing,

  577. filling the world.

  578. I'm indebted to a

  579. theologian named

  580. G.K. Beal

  581. who helped me see

  582. over the last

  583. about month or so

  584. that this is an

  585. allusion to

  586. Genesis chapter 128.

  587. Maybe you're

  588. familiar with it.

  589. Do you remember

  590. Adam and Eve?

  591. God says to them,

  592. be fruitful

  593. and multiply,

  594. fill the earth.

  595. Remember that?

  596. Do you know

  597. what's going on here?

  598. The apostle Paul

  599. is talking about

  600. the spread

  601. of the gospel

  602. as a new creation

  603. work.

  604. A Jesus

  605. centering

  606. that bears

  607. fruit

  608. and multiplies

  609. all around

  610. the world.

  611. He has gone

  612. from being localized

  613. in Colossi

  614. to now talking,

  615. going panorama

  616. and talking about

  617. the whole world.

  618. A global work

  619. of God

  620. in the gospel

  621. of Jesus Christ

  622. resulting in

  623. bearing fruit

  624. and multiplying

  625. and worshippers

  626. being made.

  627. The singing

  628. of God's praises

  629. throughout the earth.

  630. You can see

  631. why he's thankful

  632. about that.

  633. Being Christ

  634. centered

  635. and others

  636. oriented.

  637. He's so thankful

  638. at what God

  639. is doing

  640. globally.

  641. Not just

  642. in Colossi,

  643. globally

  644. through the good

  645. news of Jesus

  646. Christ.

  647. God's praises

  648. to the good

  649. world.

  650. So,

  651. how do we

  652. apply this

  653. to our lives

  654. today?

  655. Anybody

  656. familiar with

  657. C.S. Lewis?

  658. Any familiar

  659. with the Narnia series?

  660. The Lion,

  661. the Witch,

  662. and the Wardrobe?

  663. There are two

  664. characters that I love.

  665. Mr. and Mrs.

  666. Beaver.

  667. Man,

  668. he's snotty.

  669. Well,

  670. Mr. and Mrs.

  671. Beaver,

  672. I think it was

  673. from them first

  674. that you start

  675. hearing about

  676. something.

  677. It's spoken

  678. in kind of

  679. hushed terms.

  680. And then you

  681. start hearing

  682. different characters

  683. say it.

  684. Do you know

  685. Aslan's on the move?

  686. Aslan's on the move.

  687. Do you hear

  688. the rumors?

  689. Aslan's on the move

  690. in Narnia.

  691. Something's happening.

  692. My cousin's

  693. neighbor

  694. said so.

  695. Something's up.

  696. And C.S. Lewis

  697. who wrote

  698. the Narnia series

  699. and Aslan

  700. in order to

  701. point people

  702. to Jesus,

  703. what he's

  704. saying is

  705. Jesus is on the move.

  706. What the Apostle

  707. Paul

  708. is saying here

  709. in verses 5,

  710. 6,

  711. and 7

  712. is that

  713. Jesus is on the move

  714. in the first century

  715. world.

  716. And he's

  717. on the move

  718. in the

  719. 21st century

  720. world.

  721. In our world.

  722. In our day.

  723. Jesus is alive.

  724. He's reigning.

  725. All things are

  726. under his feet.

  727. He's spreading

  728. his kingdom

  729. today.

  730. He's on the move

  731. in our church.

  732. People are being

  733. saved.

  734. People are being

  735. sanctified.

  736. They are growing

  737. in their faith

  738. in Christ.

  739. In their love

  740. for one another.

  741. In their hope

  742. in the risen

  743. and reigning

  744. Jesus.

  745. Other churches

  746. in Kenosha

  747. are proclaiming

  748. Jesus

  749. and making

  750. disciples.

  751. I've got a

  752. lunch appointment

  753. with a brother

  754. in just a couple

  755. weeks.

  756. He's part of

  757. the Evangelical

  758. Free Church

  759. of America.

  760. Our family

  761. of churches.

  762. And there's

  763. a work underway

  764. in Union Grove

  765. to plant a church.

  766. The gospel's

  767. bearing fruit

  768. and multiplying.

  769. Jesus is on

  770. the move.

  771. Kenosha

  772. Christian Academy

  773. is a church

  774. plant in its

  775. second year.

  776. And it's

  777. seeking to make

  778. and sustain

  779. a gospel

  780. witness

  781. in our city.

  782. Jesus is on

  783. the move.

  784. The gospel's

  785. bearing fruit

  786. and multiplying.

  787. John and Terry

  788. Tipman.

  789. You saw John

  790. up here

  791. with me

  792. just moments

  793. ago.

  794. He opened

  795. a service.

  796. He'll close

  797. the service.

  798. He and Terry

  799. are part of a

  800. ministry called

  801. Family Life.

  802. It's a ministry

  803. of crew.

  804. And they do

  805. a lot of planning

  806. for what's called

  807. a weekend to

  808. remember.

  809. It's a marriage

  810. conference.

  811. It's held

  812. throughout the

  813. nation,

  814. multiple places,

  815. multiple times.

  816. And we

  817. constantly get

  818. reports.

  819. Constantly get

  820. reports.

  821. It's actually a

  822. gospel ministry

  823. in disguise.

  824. Do you know

  825. how many people

  826. have been saved

  827. and brought to

  828. Jesus who got

  829. flipped by the

  830. grace of God

  831. at these marriage

  832. conferences?

  833. Jesus is on

  834. the move.

  835. The gospel's

  836. bearing fruit

  837. and multiplying.

  838. Paul Bandy,

  839. Kenya,

  840. mission partner.

  841. He's pastoring

  842. a church and

  843. he's ministering

  844. to pastors to

  845. proclaim Christ

  846. all throughout

  847. Kenya and

  848. Nairobi and

  849. into the bush.

  850. The gospel of

  851. Jesus Christ is

  852. bearing fruit

  853. and multiplying

  854. today.

  855. Saji Lukos,

  856. he preached here

  857. just weeks ago

  858. with reaching

  859. Indians Ministries

  860. International in

  861. India, in

  862. Nepal.

  863. They are planting

  864. churches and

  865. an extraordinary

  866. rate.

  867. Bearing fruit,

  868. multiplying in

  869. all the world.

  870. We have two

  871. dear friends,

  872. Jiwon and

  873. Caitlin Rye.

  874. They were

  875. former members

  876. here at Christ

  877. the King.

  878. He's located in

  879. Nepal and he

  880. has this ministry

  881. to pastors in

  882. the villages at

  883. the base of

  884. Mount Everest.

  885. It's remarkable.

  886. He's going to

  887. Hong Kong in just

  888. a couple weeks to

  889. preach.

  890. The gospel is

  891. bearing fruit and

  892. multiplying around

  893. the world.

  894. Today, Jesus is

  895. on the move.

  896. Our dear brother

  897. Eric Tully, one

  898. of the elders, is

  899. going back to

  900. Liberia this March

  901. to equip Liberian

  902. pastors at the

  903. Evangelical Seminary

  904. of West Africa.

  905. Jesus is on the

  906. move.

  907. The gospel of

  908. Jesus Christ is

  909. bearing fruit and

  910. multiplying around

  911. the world.

  912. And you know

  913. what, gang?

  914. This is just what

  915. we know about.

  916. What else is God

  917. doing?

  918. You're hearing

  919. rumors.

  920. Aslan's on the

  921. move.

  922. You can see why

  923. this becomes a

  924. reason in and of

  925. itself for Paul to

  926. give thanks.

  927. Do you want your

  928. prayer life juiced?

  929. Start giving

  930. thanks to God for

  931. what he is doing

  932. around the world.

  933. Thank you, God,

  934. for Saji.

  935. Thank you so much

  936. for Paul.

  937. Thank you for the

  938. Tipmans.

  939. God, would you

  940. prepare Eric?

  941. God, let your

  942. glory shine forth

  943. in the face of

  944. Jesus.

  945. Doesn't that do

  946. your heart good?

  947. It would have

  948. done the Colossians

  949. heart really good

  950. to hear what God

  951. is doing globally.

  952. The third reason

  953. is God's

  954. faithful servant.

  955. The Apostle Paul

  956. gives one more

  957. reason in this

  958. passage for

  959. thanksgiving and it

  960. has to do with a

  961. guy named Epaphras.

  962. Just as you learned

  963. it, the gospel from

  964. Epaphras, our beloved

  965. fellow servant.

  966. He's a faithful

  967. minister of Christ on

  968. your behalf and has

  969. made known to us your

  970. love in the spirit.

  971. The gospel that came

  972. to Colossi didn't

  973. come through the

  974. Apostle Paul.

  975. It came with

  976. Epaphras.

  977. We don't know the

  978. background.

  979. We don't know how he

  980. became a Christian.

  981. We don't know how he

  982. got linked up with the

  983. Apostle Paul.

  984. All we know is that at

  985. some point Epaphras was

  986. born again, God's grace

  987. flipped him, and he

  988. started proclaiming

  989. Christ.

  990. And he's like, I

  991. got to go back to my

  992. hometown and tell

  993. everybody there.

  994. So he goes back to

  995. Colossi.

  996. He starts proclaiming

  997. Christ.

  998. People start believing

  999. in Christ.

  1000. They form a church.

1001. There are a number of

  1002. descriptions of Epaphras

  1003. that Paul makes.

  1004. And there's no question

  1005. that Paul is commending

  1006. Epaphras to this church.

1007. He's going to come back

  1008. in chapter 4, verse 12,

  1009. and commend him some

  1010. more.

  1011. But he's commending him

  1012. in a spirit of

  1013. thankfulness to God.

  1014. Paul's thankful for

  1015. Epaphras' ministry to

  1016. the Colossian church.

  1017. Of all the different

  1018. descriptions, I just

1019. want to point out one.

  1020. It's the word faithful.

  1021. He's a faithful minister

1022. of Christ on your behalf.

  1023. Faithful.

  1024. Faithfulness is

  1025. reliability.

  1026. Faithfulness is

  1027. trustworthiness of

  1028. dependability.

1029. It is a confidence that

  1030. you have in someone

1031. that they're going to get

  1032. it done.

  1033. And it's a faithfulness

1034. as a minister of Christ.

  1035. They're going to be

  1036. faithful to serving

  1037. Jesus even if they're

  1038. having their fingernails

  1039. pulled out.

  1040. going to be faithful

  1041. to Jesus.

  1042. Faithfulness is a

  1043. highly valued

  1044. kingdom character

  1045. trait.

  1046. In fact, Jesus

  1047. spoke of it.

  1048. Do you remember

  1049. in Matthew 25

  1050. the parable

  1051. of the talents?

  1052. Jesus talks about

  1053. this story

  1054. of a

  1055. master

  1056. who's going

  1057. on a long journey.

  1058. He gives

  1059. different sums

  1060. of money

  1061. to three servants.

  1062. He comes back

  1063. after a long time.

  1064. He comes to

  1065. one of the servants

  1066. the first one.

  1067. He gave five talents

  1068. which was a load

  1069. of money.

  1070. And that servant

  1071. said, yeah,

1072. I doubled it for you.

  1073. And the master

  1074. says to him,

  1075. well done,

  1076. good and

  1077. faithful servant.

  1078. You were faithful

  1079. in a little.

  1080. Now I'm going to

  1081. give you much.

  1082. Enter the joy

  1083. of your master.

  1084. Second servant,

  1085. he just gave

  1086. two talents.

  1087. He doubled it.

  1088. The master

  1089. says to him,

  1090. well done,

  1091. good and

  1092. faithful servant.

  1093. You've been faithful

  1094. with a little.

  1095. I'm going to

  1096. entrust you

  1097. with much.

  1098. Welcome.

  1099. Come on into

  1100. the joy

  1101. of your master.

  1102. That third servant,

  1103. he squandered it,

  1104. sat on it,

  1105. was sheepish

  1106. and shameful

  1107. and when the master

  1108. holds him to account,

  1109. he reprimands him

  1110. and casts him out.

  1111. Faithfulness

  1112. is a kingdom value.

  1113. Faithfulness

  1114. to Jesus.

  1115. We see it

  1116. in Colossians

    Colossians 1:27

  1117. chapter 1

  1118. verse 27.

  1119. To them

  1120. God chose

  1121. to make known

  1122. how great

  1123. among the Gentiles

  1124. are the riches

  1125. of the glory

  1126. of this mystery

  1127. which is Christ

  1128. in you,

  1129. the hope of glory.

  1130. It's faithfulness

  1131. to him.

  1132. He says

  1133. in 28,

  1134. him,

  1135. Jesus we proclaim

  1136. warning everyone

  1137. and teaching everyone

  1138. with all wisdom

  1139. that we may present

  1140. everyone mature

  1141. in Christ.

  1142. For this I toil

  1143. faithfully

  1144. struggling with all

  1145. his energy

  1146. that he powerfully

  1147. works within me.

  1148. Faithfulness

  1149. to Christ.

  1150. Paul

  1151. is thanking God

  1152. for this brother's

  1153. faithfulness

  1154. not just to Jesus

  1155. but to the church.

  1156. This morning

  1157. I sent a text out

  1158. to Zach

  1159. and Josiah

  1160. from 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:5

  1161. chapter 4

  1162. verses 5, 6, and 7

  1163. gets at this

  1164. faithfulness.

  1165. For what we proclaim

  1166. is not ourselves

  1167. but Jesus Christ

  1168. as Lord

  1169. with ourselves

  1170. as your servants

  1171. for Jesus' sake.

  1172. For God

  1173. who said

  1174. let light shine

  1175. out of darkness

1176. has shown in our hearts

  1177. to give the light

  1178. of the knowledge

1179. of the glory of God

  1180. in the face

  1181. of Jesus Christ.

  1182. A new gospel creation.

1183. But we have this treasure

  1184. in jars of clay

  1185. to show that the

  1186. surpassing power

  1187. belongs to God

  1188. and not to us.

  1189. Faithfulness.

  1190. Do you know why

  1191. kingdom faithfulness

  1192. is highly valued?

  1193. Because God

  1194. is faithful.

  1195. Fully dependable.

  1196. Always true

  1197. to his promises.

  1198. Always true

  1199. to his character.

  1200. Have you guys heard

  1201. of Crossway Community Church?

  1202. It's about 8 miles

  1203. due west.

  1204. Crossway planted

  1205. our church

  1206. about 10 years ago

  1207. and the senior pastor

  1208. there is a man

  1209. named Mike Bullmore.

  1210. I served with Mike

  1211. for 10 years

  1212. as an associate pastor

  1213. of youth ministry

  1214. over there

  1215. for a long time.

  1216. Today is Mike's

  1217. last day

  1218. serving as the

  1219. senior pastor

  1220. of Crossway Community Church.

  1221. A couple weeks ago

  1222. there was a gathering

  1223. at Crossway

  1224. where we were

  1225. expressing our thanks

  1226. to God

  1227. for this man's

  1228. faithfulness.

  1229. He's not perfect.

  1230. He'd be the first

  1231. to admit

  1232. but faithful.

  1233. Faithfully

  1234. proclaiming Christ.

  1235. Faithfully

  1236. walking

  1237. personally

  1238. with Christ.

  1239. It's good

  1240. to be thankful

  1241. to God

  1242. for faithful

  1243. brothers and sisters.

  1244. Here's how this

  1245. applies to us.

  1246. We value

  1247. faithfulness

  1248. to Christ

  1249. in those who minister.

  1250. We value

  1251. faithfulness to God.

  1252. Faithfulness

  1253. to his word.

  1254. Faithfulness

  1255. to our

  1256. master

  1257. in King

  1258. Jesus.

  1259. So

  1260. this spring

  1261. we're going to have

  1262. a nomination process

  1263. for elders

  1264. and deacons.

  1265. Do you know

  1266. what we should be

  1267. looking for?

  1268. Faithfulness.

  1269. If we get down

  1270. the line

  1271. and we need to

  1272. hire more

  1273. staff people

  1274. do you know

  1275. what we're looking

  1276. for?

  1277. Faithfulness.

  1278. Faithfulness.

  1279. reliable.

  1280. Trustworthy.

  1281. Dependable.

  1282. Confidence

  1283. in representing

  1284. Jesus

  1285. in all things.

  1286. When you see

  1287. God's grace

  1288. at work like that

  1289. you're thankful

  1290. to God for it.

  1291. Okay.

  1292. Three reasons

  1293. for Paul's

  1294. thankfulness to God.

  1295. God's proofs

  1296. of purchase.

  1297. God's global work.

  1298. God's faithful servant.

  1299. And do you know

  1300. what they all have

  1301. in common?

  1302. A Christ

  1303. centrality.

  1304. Think of the proofs.

  1305. Faith in Christ.

  1306. Christ like love.

  1307. Hope in Christ.

1308. Think of the global work.

  1309. Spreading the truth

  1310. of the gospel

  1311. of Jesus Christ.

  1312. Think of the faithful

  1313. servant Epaphras.

  1314. He was a faithful

  1315. minister

  1316. of Christ.

  1317. At the heart

  1318. of Paul's

  1319. thankfulness

  1320. is Christ.

  1321. Christ.

  1322. So when Christ

  1323. is central

  1324. to who you are

  1325. not only

  1326. will you grow

  1327. in your faith

  1328. not only

  1329. will you grow

  1330. in your love

  1331. for all the saints

  1332. not only

  1333. will you grow

  1334. in your knowledge

  1335. and delight

  1336. in the risen

  1337. and reigning

  1338. Jesus our hope

  1339. not only

  1340. will you grow

  1341. in participating

  1342. in God's global work

  1343. not only

  1344. will you grow

  1345. in your own

  1346. faithfulness

  1347. to serving

  1348. Jesus yourself

  1349. you're also

  1350. going to grow

  1351. in thanking

  1352. God

  1353. for what

  1354. he's doing

  1355. in our midst

  1356. because of Christ.

  1357. Brothers and sisters

1358. do you want to grow

  1359. in thankfulness?

  1360. Grow in Christ

  1361. centeredness

  1362. and be thankful

  1363. to God.

  1364. Let's pray together.

  1365. God in heaven

  1366. you are all glorious

  1367. we are so grateful

1368. for what you are doing

  1369. God we would ask

  1370. that you would

  1371. pour out your spirit

  1372. more and more

  1373. upon us

  1374. your church

  1375. that Christ

  1376. would be exalted

  1377. more and more

  1378. that Christ

  1379. would be spotlighted

  1380. and magnified

  1381. that more and more

  1382. people will see

  1383. Jesus lifted

  1384. and say

  1385. he is my everything

  1386. God would you

  1387. do a work

  1388. in the city

  1389. in the city of

  1390. Kenosha

  1391. causing the gospel

  1392. of Jesus Christ

  1393. to be fruitful

  1394. and multiply

1395. would you do a work

  1396. in our state

  1397. and in our country

  1398. and around the world

  1399. in which

  1400. the gospel

  1401. of Jesus Christ

  1402. bears more

  1403. and more fruit

  1404. and there is

  1405. the multiplying

  1406. of witnesses

  1407. globally

  1408. of your glory

  1409. all

  1410. for the sake

  1411. of Jesus name

  1412. amen

  1413. and

  1414. Center

  1415. the

  1416. and

  1417. here

  1418. all

  1419. we

  1420. come here

  1421. now

  1422. and

  1423. that

  1424. our

  1425. Well

  1426. and

  1427. I

  1428. have

  1430. married

  1431. and

  1433. and
