  1. Thank you, everyone who led here in singing.

  2. What a joy to be here today singing praises to King Jesus.

  3. It's such a joy for my wife and I, Carol's right here in the first seat, to be here with

  4. you all this morning.

  5. And just a quick introduction.

  6. We're both from Brazil, Belo Horizonte is the name of our city.

  7. My father, about 15 years ago, he started a ministry called Escali, which aims at equipping,

  8. training lay Christian leaders and pastors in Brazil.

  9. And that's what we feel called to continue doing.

  10. That's why we're here having our education at Trinity.

  11. I know Dr. Tully is not here today, so I feel a little bit more off-campus.

  12. And it's a great privilege to be here with you all today.

  13. And I would like to invite you all to open your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5, Matthew chapter

Matthew 5 chapter mention Matthew 5 chapter mention

  14. 5 and verses 38 to 42.

  15. I'll ask you to please leave it open there for a second.

  16. And I just want to situate us on where this text is located.

  17. You know, chapters 5 to 7 of Matthew are a collection of the Sermon on the Mount, which is Jesus' most famous teachings.

  18. But however famous it is, there's also lots of confusion about what it means and how we should relate to it.

  19. It doesn't take a long time for anyone who's reading through these chapters to see that the Sermon on the Mount paints a picture of a way of life,

  20. which is totally upside down to us.

  21. The meek inherit the earth.

  22. The persecuted rejoice.

  23. The enemies are loved.

  24. This is not at all how the world around us operates.

  25. It's foreign to us both conceptually, like how could I even begin to think about living life this way?

  26. And practically, how can I begin to take steps towards this?

  27. But this is what God's kingdom is like.

  28. It is what true righteousness looks like and what men and women were ultimately made for.

  29. And it is what a blessed life looks like.

  30. And as we read Jesus' words and meditate on them, we're deeply confronted with truths that go against every inclination of our bodies.

  31. There's a disconnect between the way of life in God's kingdom and what we often desire.

  32. Isn't there?

  33. I know that's how I feel sometimes.

  34. And if you've never been confronted or convicted by the teachings of Jesus, you really need to evaluate if you're being honest to your life or to the text in front of you.

  35. So what is the point of the Sermon on the Mount?

  36. Is it just Jesus' way of frustrating us with things that we can't ever do?

  37. Or is it actually a way that we can live our lives?

  38. So I believe we can summarize what the Sermon on the Mount is with three statements.

  39. First, it is a declaration of what true righteousness in God's kingdom look like.

  40. It's Jesus' big manifesto of what people will look like in this kingdom.

  41. How they will talk to each other.

  42. How they will walk.

  43. How they will interact.

  44. What kind of community it is.

  45. But the Sermon on the Mount is also like a big mirror that makes us look at ourselves and compare our way of living with true righteousness.

  46. Chapter 5, verse 20 says,

  47. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  48. Verse 48,

  49. You, therefore, must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  50. Strong words from Jesus that really makes us sit back and reflect,

  51. How do I compare to the way of life in God's kingdom?

  52. And lastly, the Sermon on the Mount points us to a fulfillment in Jesus.

  53. Matthew 5, 17,

  54. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets.

  55. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  56. And to make the point clearer, the sermon ends with this note,

  57. And when Jesus finished these saints, the crowds were astonished as His teaching,

  58. for He was teaching them as one who had authority and not as the scribes.

  59. So, having this big picture, let us now read this text and how Jesus is accomplishing all that in these few five verses that we're going to read right now.

  60. So, follow along with me.

  61. Matthew 5, verses 38 to 42.

    Matthew 5:38–42

  62. Matthew 5, verse 39.

    Matthew 5:39

  63. We have all probably heard this text or parts of it several times growing up, right?

  64. And even if we didn't go to church, we know that we're supposed to give the other cheek.

  65. Many of us have used this text to say that in God's kingdom, there is no place for punishment, justice, or violence of any kind.

  66. Others have taught that this text is about nothing more than not giving revenge.

  67. But as we'll go on, we'll see that vengeance and retaliation are only part of the issue.

  68. And Jesus is trying to get to the heart of where these things actually come from.

  69. So, as we go over this text, we'll spend most of our time first trying to gradually understand, with all the examples that Jesus is giving,

  70. what is true righteousness in this text and how we compare to it.

  71. And then, finally, we'll spend the last minutes of this sermon seeing how this text points us to Jesus as the fulfillment of all righteousness

  72. and why that actually is good news for us as God's people.

  73. So, what is true righteousness and how do we compare to it?

  74. Jesus begins this passage by quoting a part of the law that God had given to Israel through His servant Moses.

  75. Verse 38, He says,

  76. You have heard that it was said in the law, an eye for an eye and a two for a two.

  77. Now, I don't know about you, but many times I forget that even though the law of Moses was something pretty far removed in the past,

  78. for us, it was already very ancient even in Jesus' day.

  79. I sometimes have the tendency to think that all the characters in the Bible are just like people living in different villages,

  80. as if Jesus could say,

  81. You know, Moses, when he came with those two big pieces of stone, he told us a good story.

  82. You know how it goes. Here it is.

  83. But that's not at all the case, right?

  84. They live centuries apart.

  85. And just as it is for us, it was also hard for them in Jesus' day to keep fresh in their minds what was the true intent of the law.

  86. That's why in verses 21 to 48 in this chapter 5, Jesus says it several times.

  87. You have heard that it was said this, but I tell you that.

  88. It's not as if Jesus is saying that the law is useless and they're not correct anymore.

  89. He's just trying to address the issues of people's current misunderstandings of the law and to show them what is the true righteousness that it pointed to.

  90. So what's the correct understanding of an eye for an eye and a two for a two?

  91. It sure sounds very violent, to say the least, right?

  92. However, if we go back to the text on the law that addressed this issue, we'll see that far from being something the law was encouraging people to do,

  93. this phrase, which was intentionally easy to remember, was placed as a limit to the extent of punishment a crime should have.

  94. It was a provision in the law, much like the provision of divorce, which became allowed in some cases because of the hardness of people's heart.

  95. And this provision was supposed to restrict vengeance and to limit vindictiveness.

  96. The question was, have you been wronged by someone?

  97. And if so, whoever wronged you will be punished.

  98. And the punishment, it must fit the crime.

  99. You can't put a person in jail for stumbling on your foot,

  100. and we're not going to let someone who robbed your house just go away with a written warning.

  101. Instead, it will be like an eye for an eye and a two for a two.

  102. So, for example, Leviticus 24, 21 says,

  103. Whoever kills a person shall be put to death.

  104. The punishment fits the crime.

  105. Verse 22,

  106. You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the Lord your God.

  107. This was a law for the land of Israel and all of those in it.

  108. It was supposed to be applied not by the person who received the crime, you see,

  109. but by the government officials, by the governors, or sometimes called princes or elders of the people.

  110. And they were supposed to make this judgment based on the evidence of two or three people.

  111. That's what the law said, and it was commonly summarized in an eye for an eye and a two for a two.

  112. Now, fast forward several hundred years,

  113. and how were the people in Jesus' day actually practicing this law?

  114. Instead of limiting it to the court of law,

  115. they were applying this principle without thinking about any intention of justice and righteousness.

  116. They didn't care if there was an investigation or not, witnesses or not.

  117. They just thought of this law as a concession to take vengeance into their own hands.

  118. They thought,

  119. Okay, he got a chicken for me,

  120. so I'll go ahead and grab two from him,

  121. and then three,

  122. and so on and so forth.

  123. Things just piled up without any control

  124. because they didn't care for justice.

  125. Then what does Jesus say

  126. the citizens of God's upside-down kingdom

  127. should do instead?

  128. Beginning of verse 39,

  129. But I say to you,

  130. do not resist the one who is evil.

  131. For him,

  132. when it comes to our relationship with other people,

  133. it's not up to us

  134. to offer the proper retribution to evil.

  135. And please hear me well here.

  136. Jesus was not saying,

  137. forget about all that punishment

  138. and forget about retribution.

  139. People should do just whatever they want

  140. whenever they feel like it.

  141. No,

  142. not a chance.

  143. The law was intended for good.

  144. What Jesus is saying

  145. is that we don't take vengeance

  146. into our own hands.

  147. The governments and authorities

  148. are the ones set up by God to do so.

  149. Romans 13, 4 says that

  150. the human's authority

  151. are the servants of God,

  152. an avenger who carries out

  153. God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

  154. Not us.

  155. Even more than that,

  156. the Bible says that

  157. God is the ultimate retributer.

  158. 1 Corinthians 3, 17 says,

  159. If anyone destroys God's temple,

  160. that is our body,

  161. God will destroy him.

  162. Do you see how this language

  163. fits with the goodness of retribution

  164. that the law was actually pointing to?

  165. But when it comes to our daily lives

  166. and our personal interactions,

  167. we should have a certain orientation

  168. about life

  169. that does not seek to repay offenses

  170. and that does not desire

  171. to preserve our honor

  172. and our pride at all costs.

  173. So we got the principle down.

  174. Do not resist the evil person.

  175. But the question then comes,

  176. how does that look like in real life?

  177. And that's why Jesus

  178. wants to make it clear

  179. with four different examples

  180. of how we should apply it.

  181. And as we go along,

  182. we'll get a better understanding

  183. of what Jesus means

  184. by not resisting the evil person.

  185. Because that is only part

  186. of the picture

  187. of what true righteousness is

  188. in this text.

  189. And the examples are set up

  190. in such a way

  191. that we're supposed to look

  192. at each of them

  193. and ask ourselves,

  194. how do I compare to this?

  195. Verse 39 again,

  196. second part of it now.

  197. If anyone slaps you

  198. on the right cheek,

  199. give him the other also.

  200. We tend to think of this

  201. as a physical attack, right?

  202. Slap on the cheek.

  203. But if we read carefully,

  204. he says on the right cheek.

  205. That may not seem like much,

  206. but it means it wasn't

  207. a full right-handed slap,

  208. not a sounding and impactful,

  209. hurtful slap to the face,

  210. but an ironic, humiliating slap

  211. with the back of the hand.

  212. It was the kind of thing

  213. that you would do

  214. to make the person feel

  215. like the scum of the earth.

  216. It was an assault

  217. on the person's honor.

  218. And what does that look like

  219. for us today?

  220. I mean,

  221. a slap on the face

  222. is still pretty humiliating.

  223. But our lives

  224. are filled with things

  225. usually that are

  226. much more subtle

  227. and much more nuanced

  228. that are nevertheless

  229. damaging to our honor.

  230. Sometimes it can be

  231. as obvious as a boss

  232. yelling at us

  233. across the room

  234. for everyone to hear.

  235. Or a joke

  236. that someone tells

  237. to the whole group

  238. about a flaw that you have.

  239. sometimes just a look,

  240. depending on how it's done

  241. and by whom it's done,

  242. can be very humiliating

  243. and hurting

  244. deep down on our pride.

  245. I'm certain that we have

  246. all experienced this

  247. to one degree or another

  248. at some point in life.

  249. And how do we typically respond?

  250. With a strike back

  251. at their honor.

  252. Right?

  253. We don't absorb the blow,

  254. much less give the other cheek.

  255. No, we need to make

  256. things right again.

  257. It almost seems like

  258. a socially accepted idea.

  259. Right?

  260. Think about

  261. a random guy

  262. at the end of his

  263. bar fight story

  264. saying,

  265. I just

  266. didn't let my kid

  267. think I was a loser.

  268. Or

  269. think of the response

  270. of her friends

  271. after a girl says

  272. what was her sarcastic reply

  273. to the inappropriate comment

  274. she heard at work.

  275. Yeah, girl.

  276. You showed him.

  277. has become

  278. socially accepted

  279. and valued.

  280. And unfortunately,

  281. this socially accepted

  282. practice

  283. has infiltrated

  284. many of our own

  285. families.

  286. Our very houses.

  287. Whenever we feel

  288. attacked

  289. by the words

  290. of our spouses

  291. or of our parents,

  292. these are the people

  293. that we know

  294. most intimately.

  295. Right?

  296. We know what

  297. ticks them.

  298. We know what

  299. could hurt them

  300. back.

  301. It's easy

  302. to

  303. vindicate

  304. ourselves

  305. and the family

  306. because we can

  307. hurt them back.

  308. Instead of

  309. doing that,

  310. Jesus tells us

  311. to show

  312. no concern

  313. at all

  314. for the

  315. maintenance

  316. of our honor.

  317. Give the other

  318. cheek.

  319. Give them grace

  320. instead of

  321. any payback

  322. that you're

  323. thinking of

  324. giving

  325. and that

  326. you're

  327. able

  328. to give.

  329. Verse 40.

  330. And if anyone

  331. would sue you

  332. and take your

  333. tunic,

  334. let him have

  335. your cloak

  336. as well.

  337. Now,

  338. the tunic

  339. was someone's

  340. first layer.

  341. In my case,

  342. it's this shirt

  343. underneath.

  344. And the cloak

  345. was the outer layer.

  346. So,

  347. in other words,

  348. he's saying,

  349. if anyone wants

  350. to sue you

  351. for your shirt,

  352. let him have

  353. your coat

  354. also,

  355. or something

  356. like that.

  357. And I want

  358. to emphasize

  359. that he says

  360. if anyone

  361. wants to.

  362. Because if they

  363. actually do

  364. sue you

  365. for your shirt

  366. and win your shirt,

  367. which is not

  368. something common here,

  369. but it was more

  370. back then,

  371. you don't just

  372. give your coat.

  373. But if they're

  374. threatening you

  375. to sue you

  376. for something

  377. small like a shirt

  378. and they're using

  379. that to provoke

  380. you to anger,

  381. then show

  382. that in your heart

  383. you could do

  384. even more than that.

  385. Like your coat,

  386. for example.

  387. we all have

  388. the tendency

  389. of thinking,

  390. are we supposed

  391. to literally

  392. do this?

  393. Right?

  394. And we proceed

  395. to try to draw

  396. a line

  397. of where

  398. good is good enough.

  399. Hey, Jesus,

  400. this is the most

  401. I can do.

  402. But that's not

  403. the point that

  404. Jesus is aiming at.

  405. So,

  406. imagine for a second

  407. that you're preparing

  408. your wedding.

  409. I don't know

  410. how many of you

  411. have gone through that.

  412. My wife and I

  413. went through that.

  414. A couple years ago.

  415. In Brazil,

  416. we usually have

  417. big weddings.

  418. At least compared

  419. to what I've heard

  420. is the common

  421. here in the US.

  422. So,

  423. we really need

  424. to make sure

  425. that we count

  426. exactly how many

  427. people are coming

  428. because otherwise

  429. we'll pay more

  430. for the buffet,

  431. which is the most

  432. expensive part.

  433. Imagine that

  434. you're at the

  435. final stages

  436. of your preparation,

  437. you and your wife.

  438. And one day

  439. you're in the middle

  440. of a random

  441. family gathering

  442. that you're having

  443. and your cousin

  444. turns to your wife

  445. out of the blue

  446. and just says,

  447. so,

  448. since you brought

  449. your little girlfriend

  450. or your little boyfriend

  451. to my birthday party

  452. a couple years ago,

  453. I'll just bring

  454. some of my friends

  455. to your wedding.

  456. That's okay, right?

  457. This is a clear

  458. challenge to you.

  459. Much like the one

  460. who wants to sue

  461. someone else

  462. for their shirt,

  463. the situation

  464. just begs the answer.

  465. What are you going

  466. to say about that?

  467. Your cousin

  468. obviously wants

  469. to see you

  470. and your wife

  471. lose your mind

  472. over this.

  473. Now,

  474. imagine instead

  475. of saying,

  476. no,

  477. what's wrong

  478. with you?

  479. You guys responded

  480. as if this person

  481. didn't just offend

  482. and expose you

  483. in front of

  484. the entire family.

  485. Imagine instead

  486. that you said,

  487. you know what,

  488. cousin,

  489. I know there aren't

  490. going to be too many

  491. people that you know

  492. there and it's

  493. really just our goal

  494. that everyone

  495. has a good time.

  496. So yeah,

  497. definitely bring

  498. as many friends

  499. as you want.

  500. I don't want you

  501. to be feeling

  502. left out.

  503. Now,

  504. I don't know

  505. if Carol and I

  506. would have the composure

  507. to have that kind

  508. of answer

  509. if this actually

  510. happened to us.

  511. But if I were

  512. the imaginary offender

  513. in this case,

  514. the cousin,

  515. I would have no idea

  516. how to respond.

  517. Right?

  518. I would be puzzled

  519. and surprised.

  520. Like,

  521. how can someone

  522. be so loving?

  523. And Paul says

  524. in Romans 12

  525. that this type

  526. of loving response

  527. puts burning coals

  528. on the heads

  529. of our enemies.

  530. They are now

  531. the ones ashamed

  532. and probably convicted

  533. by their own selfishness.

  534. now,

  535. again,

  536. how do we compare

  537. to this kind

  538. of righteousness?

  539. How do we compare

  540. to this kind

  541. of really

  542. it's not a big deal

  543. type of attitude

  544. to the offenses

  545. and threats

  546. against us?

  547. Verse 41,

  548. And if anyone

  549. forces you

  550. to go one mile,

  551. go with him

  552. two miles.

  553. It was a common

  554. practice in the Roman

  555. Empire for soldiers

  556. to ask random

  557. civilians to carry

  558. their military

  559. equipment for them.

  560. Of course,

  561. there was no other

  562. option.

  563. You could only

  564. obey.

  565. But the most

  566. they could ask

  567. for was one mile.

  568. Now,

  569. we don't have to be

  570. experts in the culture

  571. of that time

  572. to know

  573. that the Israelites

  574. didn't like

  575. the Romans

  576. very much.

  577. I mean,

  578. they invaded

  579. their country,

  580. taxed them,

  581. and abused them

  582. in several ways.

  583. So,

  584. you can imagine

  585. how they felt

  586. about these

  587. mile-long heavy lifting.

  588. Now,

  589. how do we deal

  590. with those

  591. who have authority

  592. over us,

  593. especially

  594. when things

  595. seem to go

  596. against us

  597. in a discomforting

  598. way?

  599. Are we more

  600. inclined

  601. to submit

  602. and endure

  603. with patience

  604. and grace,

  605. even if it seems

  606. unfair at the

  607. moment?

  608. Or are we

  609. too concerned

  610. with reclaiming

  611. our rights

  612. to even think

  613. about submitting,

  614. let alone

  615. walking the extra

  616. mile?

  617. Again,

  618. it's not about

  619. making little rules

  620. for every situation

  621. where we can't ever

  622. deviate from them,

  623. but it's a matter

  624. of the heart,

  625. a desire

  626. and posture

  627. of fighting

  628. against

  629. all inclination

  630. that tell us

  631. to fight back

  632. and to hold

  633. our ground

  634. when we feel

  635. attacked by others

  636. in our pride.

  637. And with the

  638. examples we've

  639. seen so far,

  640. we can start

  641. to sketch out

  642. a better understanding

  643. of what true

  644. righteousness is

  645. in this text.

  646. You see,

  647. it's not really

  648. just about

  649. not resisting

  650. the evil person,

  651. as verse 39

  652. seemed to indicate,

  653. but true

  654. righteousness

  655. abandons

  656. sinful impulses

  657. of self-preservation.

  658. What do I mean

  659. by that?

  660. Not only are we

  661. to let go

  662. of vengeance,

  663. but all

  664. sinful,

  665. that is,

  666. all the wrong

  667. impulses

  668. towards

  669. self-preservation.

  670. By implication,

  671. there are

  672. such things

  673. as good

  674. impulses

  675. of self-preservation.

  676. Right?

  677. It's good

  678. for a mother

  679. to protect

  680. her life

  681. and health

  682. so she can

  683. take good care

  684. of her kids,

  685. whether it be

  686. her life

  687. from the attacks

  688. of others

  689. or her health

  690. from fat,

  691. trans fat,

  692. fat trans,

  693. I don't know

  694. how to say that.

  695. You know,

  696. eating well.

  697. It is not good,

  698. however,

  699. for a mother

  700. to yell

  701. at a stranger

  702. who cut her

  703. off in traffic

  704. so her daughter

  705. will see her

  706. as the strong

  707. independent woman

  708. she always

  709. dreams for her

  710. kid to be.

  711. That's not

  712. the type of

  713. impulse

  714. to preserve.

  715. Of course,

  716. too,

  717. we should all

  718. be concerned

  719. for justice

  720. and for those

  721. who are abused

  722. and afflicted.

  723. Isaiah 1.17

  724. says,

  725. Seek justice,

  726. defend the oppressed,

  727. take up the cause

  728. of the fatherless,

  729. plead the case

  730. of the widow,

  731. and so on.

  732. And these things

  733. are especially relevant

  734. here in the U.S.,

  735. and I don't want to

  736. downplay them

  737. at all.

  738. But the question is,

  739. what are you really

  740. trying to preserve

  741. or fight for?

  742. Are you standing

  743. for those

  744. who are suffering

  745. justice

  746. or just for your

  747. personal honor

  748. and in some

  749. twisted way

  750. making everything

  751. about your pride

  752. and your personal

  753. self and pride?

  754. The point

  755. is simple

  756. to understand

  757. but is

  758. so hard

  759. to apply.

  760. What heart

  761. inclination

  762. are you going

  763. to listen to

  764. before your next

  765. step?

  766. Is it one that

  767. simply wants to

  768. reclaim your honor,

  769. your time,

  770. your energy,

  771. your rights,

  772. your self-esteem,

  773. your social status?

  774. Don't listen

  775. to that anymore.

  776. Verse 42.

  777. Give to the one

  778. who begs from you

  779. and do not refuse

  780. the one who wants

  781. to borrow from you.

  782. Now,

  783. what does this verse

  784. have in common

  785. with the ones

  786. that came before it?

  787. It does not follow

  788. the same pattern

  789. of if this,

  790. then that.

  791. And it's not really

  792. about vengeance

  793. like the previous ones.

  794. So,

  795. what brings all

  796. these verses together?

  797. What do they

  798. have in common?

  799. If we look closely

  800. at these examples,

  801. we'll see that

  802. in all of them,

  803. without exception,

  804. the controlling

  805. impulse

  806. from our sinful nature

  807. is to fight

  808. to preserve

  809. something.

  810. Think about it.

  811. The person

  812. who slaps back

  813. instead of giving

  814. the other cheek

  815. isn't really trying

  816. to hurt

  817. the other person

  818. in their face

  819. but to put them

  820. back on equal

  821. grounds of honor.

  822. The heart

  823. is begging

  824. to have its

  825. treasured honor

  826. back.

  827. The one who

  828. fights back

  829. against those

  830. who want to sue

  831. them

  832. do not necessarily

  833. want something

  834. from that person

  835. but they want

  836. to say,

  837. hey,

  838. I'm no pushover.

  839. I don't care

  840. if it's a shirt,

  841. a blouse,

  842. or even a sock.

  843. I will not let you

  844. go out there

  845. as if you're

  846. somehow above me.

  847. The one who

  848. resists the

  849. inconvenience

  850. of walking

  851. the mile

  852. requested

  853. is saying

  854. in his heart,

  855. why me?

  856. Why am I

  857. always the one

  858. who needs to

  859. put up

  860. with this

  861. kind of stuff?

  862. Ask Steve

  863. or Pastor Mike

  864. or something.

  865. Don't ask me.

  866. And finally,

  867. of the one

  868. to whom

  869. people are asking

  870. and to whom

  871. they want

  872. to borrow from,

  873. what are they

  874. seeking to preserve?

  875. Money.

  876. Right?

  877. I mean,

  878. they think,

  879. it's my money

  880. after all

  881. and I can do

  882. with it

  883. whatever I want.

  884. And if you're

  885. going to get

  886. any money

  887. from me,

  888. you better give

  889. me a pretty

  890. good reason

  891. why I should

  892. trust you

  893. and I will

  894. treat you

  895. like you're

  896. beneath me

  897. the whole time

  898. until you

  899. pay me back

  900. every cent.

  901. Obviously,

  902. just like

  903. the other

  904. examples,

  905. this does not

  906. mean that we

  907. must give

  908. money to

  909. everyone

  910. who asks

  911. every time.

  912. demanding

  913. this

  914. is making

  915. the same

  916. mistake

  917. as the

  918. person

  919. who says

  920. that there

  921. is never

  922. space for

  923. retaliation

  924. and justice

  925. just because

  926. Jesus told

  927. us to give

  928. the other

  929. cheek.

  930. We are

  931. instead supposed

  932. to have a

  933. certain view

  934. of our

  935. money

  936. that is not

  937. striving to

  938. preserve it

  939. at all times

  940. just for the

  941. sake of it

  942. or for the

  943. love of it.

  944. We are to be

  945. generous people.

  946. on the

  947. other hand,

  948. it's not

  949. because someone

  950. asks for

  951. money.

  952. That money

  953. is what

  954. they need

  955. or even

  956. what's the

  957. most loving

  958. thing to

  959. give them.

  960. Right?

  961. Let's say

  962. it's summertime

  963. and you're

  964. eating outside

  965. at one of

  966. the restaurants

  967. downtown

  968. and a

  969. disheveled

  970. man smelling

  971. like alcohol

  972. comes up to

  973. you and

  974. asks for

  975. five bucks

  976. to get

  977. something to

  978. eat.

  979. In this

  980. instance,

  981. how does

  982. want to

  983. obey what

  984. Jesus is

  985. requiring

  986. in verse

  987. 42?

  988. What is

  989. the best

  990. way to

  991. help this

  992. man?

  993. Is it

  994. to give

  995. him the

  996. cash?

  997. Well,

  998. here's what

  999. you could

  1000. do.

  1001. You could

  1002. say to

  1003. them,

  1004. sir,

  1005. I'm not

  1006. going to

  1007. give you

  1008. any money

  1009. but I'll

  1010. do something

  1011. better.

  1012. Just pick

  1013. something off

  1014. the menu

  1015. here and

  1016. I'll buy

  1017. it for

  1018. you.

  1019. In doing

  1020. so,

  1021. you obey

  1022. Jesus by

  1023. not refusing

  1024. the one

  1025. who's asking

  1026. and you

  1027. avoid unwisely

  1028. contributing to

  1029. something that

  1030. might be harmful

  1031. to the person

  1032. that is

  1033. alcohol.

  1034. You help

  1035. him without

  1036. hurting him

  1037. and that's

  1038. true righteousness.

  1039. So,

  1040. you see,

  1041. this whole

  1042. section is

  1043. not just

  1044. about not

  1045. giving vengeance

  1046. or revenge

  1047. and at this

  1048. point it's

  1049. clear that

  1050. true righteousness

  1051. also does not

  1052. stop at

  1053. abandoning the

  1054. sinful impulses

  1055. of self-preservation.

  1056. true righteousness

  1057. also embraces

  1058. a lifestyle

  1059. of mercy

  1060. and grace.

  1061. Mercy

  1062. does not

  1063. give what

  1064. the person

  1065. deserves.

  1066. The person

  1067. who offends

  1068. you deserves

  1069. punishment.

  1070. You don't

  1071. give that to

  1072. them.

  1073. Grace

  1074. gives even

  1075. when they

  1076. don't deserve

  1077. it,

  1078. especially

  1079. because they

  1080. don't deserve

  1081. it.

  1082. Our offenders

  1083. and those who

  1084. beg from us

  1085. are not entitled

  1086. to anything

  1087. from us,

  1088. but we give

  1089. it to them

  1090. anyway.

  1091. As imitators

  1092. of God

  1093. himself who

  1094. does the

  1095. same thing

  1096. for us.

  1097. As Jesus

  1098. will say in

  1099. a few

  1100. verses,

  1101. love your

  1102. enemies so

  1103. that you may

  1104. be sons of

  1105. your fathers,

  1106. that is,

  1107. imitators of

  1108. your fathers.

  1109. For he

  1110. makes his

  1111. son rise on

  1112. the evil

  1113. and on the

  1114. good,

  1115. and he

  1116. sends rain

  1117. on the just

  1118. and on the

  1119. unjust.

  1120. So,

  1121. what Jesus

  1122. is saying

  1123. in all these

  1124. five verses

  1125. is that

  1126. true righteousness

  1127. both abandons

  1128. sinful impulses

  1129. of self-preservation

  1130. and it

  1131. also

  1132. embraces

  1133. a lifestyle

  1134. of mercy

  1135. and of grace.

  1136. And I think

  1137. we can all

  1138. agree that

  1139. in one degree

  1140. or another

  1141. we all fall

  1142. short of this.

  1143. So,

  1144. with that in

  1145. mind,

  1146. we come to

  1147. our second

  1148. and final

  1149. point.

  1150. How does

  1151. this teaching

  1152. point us

  1153. to Jesus

  1154. as the

  1155. fulfillment

  1156. of all

  1157. righteousness

  1158. and why

  1159. is that

  1160. good news

  1161. for us?

  1162. So,

  1163. friends,

  1164. the thing

  1165. about these

  1166. early chapters

  1167. of Matthew's

  1168. gospel is

  1169. that when we

  1170. look at the

  1171. Sermon on the

  1172. Mount,

  1173. we're only

  1174. getting a

  1175. glimpse of

  1176. the whole

  1177. story.

  1178. We're taking

  1179. a peek at

  1180. the guest

  1181. room when

  1182. he's building

  1183. this whole

  1184. house in

  1185. the book.

  1186. He's inviting

  1187. us,

  1188. Matthew,

  1189. the author

  1190. of this

  1191. gospel,

  1192. to continue

  1193. reading so

  1194. we can fully

  1195. understand what

  1196. Jesus means

  1197. with being

  1198. the fulfillment

  1199. of the

  1200. law.

  1201. If you

  1202. remember a

  1203. few verses

  1204. earlier,

  1205. verse 17,

  1206. he said,

  1207. do not

  1208. think that I

  1209. have come

  1210. to abolish

  1211. the law

  1212. and the

  1213. prophets.

  1214. I have

  1215. not come

  1216. to abolish

  1217. them,

  1218. but to

  1219. fulfill

  1220. them.

  1221. We need

  1222. to understand

  1223. that Jesus

  1224. was the

  1225. center of

  1226. everything that

  1227. God's law

  1228. pointed to.

  1229. In fact,

  1230. Jesus was

  1231. such a

  1232. turning point

  1233. to the

  1234. way people

  1235. needed to

  1236. see and

  1237. relate to

  1238. God and

  1239. his law,

  1240. that he

  1241. said things

  1242. like this

  1243. throughout

  1244. the whole

  1245. sermon.

  1246. You heard

  1247. that it

  1248. was said,

  1249. this thing

  1250. on the

  1251. law,

  1252. but I

  1253. tell you,

  1254. this is

  1255. no ordinary

  1256. teacher,

  1257. and Matthew

  1258. makes it

  1259. clear by

  1260. the end

  1261. of the

  1262. sermon

  1263. just how

  1264. unlike

  1265. the other

  1266. teachers

  1267. of Israel

  1268. Jesus

  1269. was.

  1270. The

  1271. crowds

  1272. were

  1273. astonished

  1274. at his

  1275. teaching,

  1276. for he

  1277. was teaching

  1278. them with

  1279. one who

  1280. had

  1281. authority.

  1282. What

  1283. kind of

  1284. authority

  1285. is this?

  1286. What

  1287. does it

  1288. do?

  1289. What is

  1290. it for?

  1291. Matthew

  1292. wants us

  1293. to keep

  1294. reading.

  1295. On chapter

  1296. 9,

  1297. Jesus is

  1298. going to

  1299. heal the

  1300. paralytic,

  1301. and the

  1302. reason why

  1303. he does

  1304. that is,

  1305. verse 6,

  1306. so you

  1307. may know

  1308. that the

  1309. Son of

  1310. Man has

  1311. authority on

  1312. earth to

  1313. forgive sins.

  1314. Likewise,

  1315. chapter 10,

  1316. verse 1,

  1317. Jesus gives

  1318. his apostles

  1319. authority to

  1320. drive out

  1321. impure spirits

  1322. and heal

  1323. every disease.

  1324. And if we

  1325. keep reading,

  1326. later on we'll

  1327. see Jesus

  1328. suffering without

  1329. taking revenge

  1330. into his own

  1331. hands and

  1332. dying a shameful

  1333. death though he

  1334. lived a sinless

  1335. life.

  1336. But by his

  1337. authority he

  1338. defeated the

  1339. grave and

  1340. raised to

  1341. life as he

  1342. said he

  1343. would.

  1344. And right

  1345. before he

  1346. went back to

  1347. the Father he

  1348. said to the

  1349. apostles,

  1350. all authority

  1351. in heaven and

  1352. on earth has

  1353. been given to

  1354. me.

  1355. Not just

  1356. authority to

  1357. teach, to

  1358. heal, to

  1359. cast out

  1360. demons, but

  1361. all authority.

  1362. Go therefore

  1363. by his

  1364. authority and

  1365. make disciples

  1366. of all nations

  1367. baptizing them

  1368. in the name of

  1369. the Father, the

  1370. Son, and the

  1371. Holy Spirit.

  1372. Teaching them to

  1373. observe all that

  1374. I have commended

  1375. you.

  1376. And behold, I'm

  1377. with you always

  1378. to the end of

  1379. the age.

  1380. So for

  1381. Matthew, the

  1382. pathway towards

  1383. true righteousness

  1384. is not first and

  1385. foremost to strive

  1386. to be a

  1387. citizen of

  1388. heaven.

  1389. By ourselves, any

  1390. such effort is

  1391. vain.

  1392. As we've seen

  1393. today looking at

  1394. this text and as

  1395. we know from

  1396. experience, true

  1397. righteousness is

  1398. only found in the

  1399. one who holds all

  1400. authority, even to

  1401. fulfill the law and

  1402. even to make

  1403. disciples out of

  1404. people like us who

  1405. once lived according

  1406. to the values of

  1407. this world and not

  1408. of his kingdom.

  1409. And the

  1410. my friends, we

  1411. are the

  1412. benefactors of

  1413. this authority.

  1414. He's making

  1415. disciples of all

  1416. the nations to

  1417. this day.

  1418. He has not

  1419. abandoned us, but

  1420. has included us

  1421. into his kingdom.

  1422. If we by faith

  1423. desire to be his

  1424. disciples.

  1425. And he will

  1426. remain with us

  1427. always to the

  1428. end of the age.

  1429. And that is a

  1430. reason for great

  1431. hope.

  1432. especially for

  1433. those of you

  1434. who like me

  1435. have been at

  1436. times actually

  1437. discouraged by a

  1438. text like this.

  1439. Not because it's

  1440. hard to understand,

  1441. you see, but

  1442. because it's so

  1443. difficult to live

  1444. out.

1445. The way of life in

  1446. God's kingdom is so

  1447. beautiful.

  1448. But for me, it

  1449. seems so distant

  1450. at times because of

  1451. how poorly I

  1452. compare to it.

  1453. But then I'm

  1454. reminded of this

  1455. promise.

  1456. the one who

  1457. has all authority

  1458. and who is the

  1459. fulfillment of all

  1460. righteousness has

  1461. called me himself

  1462. and guaranteed that

1463. he will be with me

  1464. always to the end

  1465. of the age.

  1466. That's what gives me

  1467. confidence to wake

  1468. up every morning to

  1469. follow his footsteps.

  1470. And what gives me

  1471. confidence at all to

  1472. preach this this

  1473. morning.

  1474. So friends, as we

  1475. conclude, I really

1476. want us to read one

1477. last text as we wrap

  1478. it up.

1479. You can open it with

  1480. me or not.

  1481. It's 1 Peter 2, 21-24.

  1482. It's a really

  1483. important text and the

  1484. echoes to our passage

1485. in Matthew 5 are just

  1486. too obvious to ignore.

  1487. So let's read the

  1488. words of the Apostle

  1489. Peter who wanted to

  1490. encourage those

  1491. Christians who were

  1492. suffering under

  1493. persecution to remain

  1494. faithful to this

  1495. teaching and maybe it

  1496. served as an

  1497. encouragement for us

  1498. too.

  1499. 1 Peter 2, 21-24

  1500. says,

1501. For to this you have

  1502. been called, because

  1503. Christ also suffered

  1504. for you, leaving you

1505. an example so that you

  1506. might follow in his

  1507. footsteps.

  1508. And look at the

  1509. example he left to

  1510. those whom he called.

  1511. He committed no sin,

  1512. neither was deceit

  1513. found in his mouth.

1514. When he was reviled, he

1515. did not revile in return.

  1516. When he suffered, he

  1517. did not threaten, but

  1518. continued entrusting

  1519. himself to him who

  1520. judges justly.

  1521. Friends, things don't go

  1522. unnoticed in God's

  1523. kingdom.

  1524. God takes vengeance for

1525. us so we don't have to

  1526. take it.

  1527. And thankfully, he's much

1528. more just than we'll ever

  1529. be.

  1530. Verse 24, he himself

1531. bore our sins in his

1532. body on the cross that we

1533. might die to sin and live

  1534. for righteousness.

1535. By his wounds you have

  1536. been healed.

  1537. What a blessed hope.

  1538. Friends, isn't it amazing

1539. that we can be assured

  1540. that our wounds have

  1541. already been healed?

1542. In Christ, we can find

  1543. forgiveness of our sins

  1544. and all of our

  1545. unrighteousness.

1546. Christ died for us so that

1547. we might die to sin and to

1548. enable us to, in fact, live

  1549. for righteousness, which we

  1550. can't without him.

1551. Because of the nature of

1552. our calling and what Christ

1553. has done for us, we can

  1554. abandon sinful impulses of

  1555. self-preservation and embrace

1556. a life of mercy and grace.

1557. And this can be true for any

1558. of us if we only take up his

1559. calling with faith and follow

  1560. him.

1561. It is for this that we have

1562. been called, to follow his

  1563. footsteps.

1564. And that's why he healed us, to

  1565. be like him.

1566. And he empowers us to do so by

1567. his abiding presence with us.

  1568. That's what a blessed life truly

  1569. looks like.

1570. Not what the world has to offer

1571. with all of its advertisements

1572. and career plans and diets and

  1573. exercises and retirements in

  1574. Florida.

  1575. No.

  1576. True righteousness in Christ.

  1577. That's the blessed life that I

1578. want for myself, for my family,

1579. for each of us today, and for

  1580. God's people worldwide.

1581. And I hope you want it too.

  1582. Let's pray.

  1583. Dear God,

1584. we are both convicted and

  1585. encouraged by this message,

  1586. Lord.

1587. Thank you because you have not

1588. left us for our own efforts.

1589. But you have empowered us,

1590. Lord, through your Holy Spirit

  1591. in us.

  1592. Jesus' presence with us.

1593. To live in a life of true

  1594. righteousness.

1595. It will not be perfect here,

  1596. Lord.

  1597. We know that.

1598. But we know that you're working

  1599. with us.

1600. And one day, you'll bring us back

  1601. to glory with you.

1602. Where we will, in fact, forever

1603. reign in righteousness with you.

  1604. Thank you, Lord Jesus.

1605. Help us to live out this life today

  1606. as we walk out.

1607. And be with us, Lord,

  1608. because we need you.

  1609. In Jesus' name.

  1610. Amen.

  1611. Thank you.
