  1. Amen. If you would open up your Bibles to Colossians chapter 3, I'd like to excuse the

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. children to go to their King's Kids class. In your pew Bible, it's page 1169. I'm going

  3. to be preaching on four verses this morning, Colossians 3, 1 through 4. Hear God's Word.

  4. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above. Where Christ

  5. is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things

  6. that are on earth. For you have died. And your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  7. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. May

  8. God bless the reading, hearing, and now preaching of His Word. In the fall of 2013, Jenny and

  9. I purchased the house we're living in, and we got it for a song because it was a fixer-upper.

  10. And one of the first things that we did was we replaced the old fuse box with a new and

  11. updated circuit breaker box. That box is what the electricity in the house comes into and

  12. distributes it. And so this is like the electrical life of the house comes in and out of that box,

  13. and we upgraded it. New ownership, new box, and some rewiring. With that new box, we had to do a bunch

  14. of rewiring in that house. If you're a Christian, the moment you believed in Christ, you were

  15. purchased by Christ, new ownership, and you were delivered from the domain of darkness and

  16. transferred into His kingdom, the kingdom of the beloved Son, in whom you have redemption,

  17. the forgiveness of sins. And as part of that redemption, He swapped out your box.

  18. According to the Old Testament, the new covenant would be marked by people whose hearts of stone

  19. would be replaced with a heart of flesh in order to live for God. And so when Christ purchased you

  20. for Himself, He replaced your heart, that box in you, with a heart for God. And He regenerated you

  21. by His Spirit. And with that new heart comes a new life. You're a new creation, Christian. The old is

  22. gone. The new has come. You've got a new heart. And now God is rewiring our thinking. He's helping us to

  23. think His thoughts. This new way of living is called sanctification. Sanctification is the process of

  24. becoming more like Christ in your thinking, and in your character, and in your conduct. It's what the

  25. Apostle Paul talks about in terms of walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, worthy of our calling.

  26. And so as we are walking more and more worthy, we are being sanctified more and more like Christ.

  27. becoming like Him. We're living more and more with Christ as the controlling center of our lives.

  28. What's essential to Christ-centered living is Christ-central thinking.

  29. What you think matters to God. And in Colossians 2, 8-23, a couple weeks ago, we were told how not to walk,

  30. how not to think. We're not to be taken captive by the Christ-less philosophies and practices of this

  31. world. But in Colossians 3, Paul turns the corner and he starts to instruct us how we are to walk,

  32. how we are to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. And it begins with this Christ-central way of thinking.

  33. It's a new thinking.

  34. And what is absolutely essential to

  35. living for Christ is adopting a Christ-central mindset.

  36. And so this morning, I want to point to

  37. three new ways of thinking from Colossians 3, 1-4.

  38. A new way of thinking about your identity.

  39. Who you are.

  40. A new way of thinking about your aim.

  41. Your purpose.

  42. Your orientation.

  43. From the things on earth to the things above.

  44. And a new time frame.

  45. Christ-King Church, what time is it?

  46. It's Christ time.

  47. These three elements of a Christian mindset are essential to Christian living.

  48. So let's dig in.

  49. Verse 1, we're told,

  50. if then you've been raised with Christ.

  51. God is actively rewiring the way we think about ourselves.

  52. Our identity.

  53. God wants you to live out who you are in Christ

  54. with a Christ-shaped identity.

  55. It's a new way of thinking.

  56. It's who you are now.

  57. Identity.

  58. What I mean by that is,

  59. what is true about you?

  60. What defines you?

  61. The truth that defines you.

  62. For many people, that is a political party.

  63. Others, that's a last name.

  64. That is one's maleness or femaleness.

  65. Youngness, oldness, skinniness.

  66. Heavy setness.

  67. One's job.

  68. It's not infrequent in conversations.

  69. Hey, what do you do?

  70. Because it defines you.

  71. Are you a creative?

  72. Or are you pragmatic?

  73. These are the things that define us.

  74. What's interesting in our day and age

  75. is that Christians and non-Christians alike

  76. are wrestling to find the answer

  77. to a very basic question in life.

  78. It's this question.

  79. Who am I?

  80. Christian,

  81. who are you?

  82. When you look in the mirror every morning,

  83. who are you looking at?

  84. God has a very definitive answer.

  85. Who God says you are

  86. is very different than

  87. who the world says you are.

  88. Even what you say you are.

  89. If you look up at chapter 2, verse 20,

  90. we read this.

  91. If with Christ you die to the elemental spirits

  92. of the world.

  93. Now look at chapter 3, verse 1.

  94. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  95. seek the things that are above.

  96. Both of those statements start with the word

  97. if.

  98. And they sound iffy.

  99. But they're not iffy.

  100. Those are statements that are called

  101. conditions of fact.

  102. It's as though the apostle Paul

  103. is saying like this.

  104. If with Christ you die to the elemental spirits

  105. of the world,

  106. and you have.

  107. Or in 3.1,

  108. if then you've been raised with Christ,

  109. and you have.

  110. So what you can do is you can replace

  111. the if with a since.

  112. Since with Christ you've died

  113. to the elemental spirits of the world.

  114. Since then you have been raised with Christ.

  115. And what these statements are,

  116. are statements of who you are in Christ.

  117. Your identity.

  118. What is getting,

  119. what we're seeing here

  120. is what people call our union with Christ.

  121. Did you notice the with Christ language?

  122. If with Christ you die to the elemental spirits.

  123. Verse chapter 3.1,

  124. if then you have been raised with Christ.

  125. It's describing our union with Christ.

  126. Your conversion to Christ, Christian,

  127. is vodically linked to you being united to Christ.

  128. Because you've been united to Christ in his death,

  129. that means you've been forgiven of all of your sin.

  130. Sin does no longer,

  131. has no longer mastery over you.

  132. The penalty's been paid.

  133. Because you've been united with Christ in his death,

  134. the world no longer has mastery over you.

  135. Death has no longer mastery over you.

  136. It's because you've been united with

  137. the work of Christ on the cross.

  138. your identity is tied

  139. powerfully

  140. to the cross work of Jesus.

  141. But it doesn't end with being united to his death.

  142. We've also been united with his resurrection.

  143. If then you've been raised with Christ.

  144. What that means is this.

  145. Because you've been raised with Christ,

  146. you no longer are ruled by sin,

  147. but now you can live for God.

  148. You can obey him with joy.

  149. And now you live for the things of God.

  150. Your union with Christ in his death

  151. delivered you from something.

  152. And your union with Christ in his resurrection

  153. delivered you to something.

  154. From sin in this world,

  155. to God,

  156. and living according to his kingdom.

  157. This shows up in Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  158. Your union with Christ results in you being dead to sin

  159. and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  160. And here in Colossians,

  161. your union with Christ,

  162. with his death,

  163. means you're no longer held captive

  164. by the Christless philosophies

  165. and practices of this world.

  166. You've been freed from that.

  167. You've been redeemed from that.

  168. You've been delivered from that.

  169. It's not who you are anymore.

  170. And in Colossians,

  171. your union with Christ in his resurrection

  172. means you've been freed to now

  173. seek the things above where Christ is,

  174. to set your mind on the things above,

  175. not in the things on the earth.

  176. So having been purchased by Christ,

  177. you now have a Christ-shaped identity,

  178. gospel identity.

  179. You've been united with Christ

  180. and his death and his resurrection.

  181. That's who you are.

  182. You know what the application is

  183. from this part of the sermon?

  184. Believe.

  185. Trust.

  186. define yourself this way.

  187. It's a Christ-shaped identity.

  188. It's who you are now.

  189. And this is a new way of thinking

  190. for many of us.

  191. We tend to let our circumstances

  192. define who we are.

  193. But God has changed that.

  194. Believer, you need to be convinced of this.

  195. You are united with Christ

  196. in his death and resurrection

  197. regardless of how you feel.

  198. It's true.

  199. It's true of you.

  200. Your union with Christ,

  201. it's not just a truth

  202. that defines you.

  203. It is the truth

  204. that defines you

  205. in every aspect

  206. of your life.

  207. So brother, sister in Christ,

  208. when you look in the mirror,

  209. who do you see?

  210. You know, the real question is,

  211. who does God see?

  212. In the book of James,

  213. the book of James talks about the Bible

  214. as a mirror.

  215. And when you look into the mirror

  216. of God's Word, Christian,

  217. do you know who's looking back at you?

  218. A sinner that's been united to Christ

  219. in his death and resurrection,

  220. and you are now a saint.

  221. Do you need to grow in this area?

  222. Do you need to grow in

  223. how you think about yourself?

  224. The way you do that

  225. is by getting God's Word

  226. on your mind.

  227. Just a simple verse

  228. like Romans 6.11,

  229. so consider yourself

  230. dead to sin

  231. and alive

  232. to God in Christ Jesus

  233. because you've been united to Him.

  234. If you get that on your mind,

  235. you know what happens?

  236. You walk through your day

  237. a little differently.

  238. You walk through your day

  239. tempted to things,

  240. and you're like, no.

  241. That's not who I am anymore.

  242. That's not me.

  243. I live for Christ now.

  244. God is actively rewiring

  245. how we think about ourselves,

  246. our identities,

  247. into this more and more

  248. Christ-shaped identity.

  249. It's who you are,

  250. regardless of how you feel.

  251. And this Christ-centered mindset

  252. about you yourself

  253. tied to Christ

  254. is absolutely crucial

  255. to Christ-centered living.

  256. Now we move from identity

  257. to aim.

  258. in verses 1 and 2,

  259. the Apostle Paul starts talking about,

  260. he starts using above language.

  261. He starts using

  262. what you're aimed at language.

  263. Your purpose.

  264. If then you see,

  265. if you have been raised with Christ,

  266. united with Christ,

  267. seek the things that are above

  268. where Christ is,

  269. seated at the right hand of God.

  270. set your minds on things

  271. that are above,

  272. not on things that are on earth.

  273. When we come across words like this,

  274. like strong words,

  275. seek,

  276. set your minds,

  277. this is God urging us

  278. to think a certain way,

  279. to have a certain mindset,

  280. to have a certain posture.

  281. If you've got a Christ-shaped identity,

  282. you must have

  283. a Christ above aim.

  284. That word seek

  285. is a wonderful word

  286. and it shows up a lot

  287. in your Bible.

  288. It shows up a lot

  289. actually in the Psalms.

  290. Let me just orient you

  291. to a couple Psalms

  292. where there's this seek language.

  293. Psalm 27, 4.

  294. One thing have I asked of the Lord

  295. that will I seek after

  296. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

  297. all the days of my life

  298. to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

  299. and inquire in His temple.

  300. Verse 8, Psalm 27.

  301. You have said,

  302. God has said,

  303. seek my face.

  304. David says,

  305. my heart says to you, God,

  306. your face, Lord, do I seek.

  307. It's beautiful.

  308. Les read something this morning

  309. from Psalm 34 to open us up.

  310. The young lions suffer want and hunger,

  311. but those who seek the Lord

  312. lack no good thing.

  313. Psalm 63, verse 1.

    Psalms 63:1

  314. Many of you know this one.

  315. Oh God, you are my God.

  316. Earnestly I seek you.

  317. My soul thirsts for you.

  318. My flesh faints for you

  319. as in a dry and weary land

  320. where there is no water.

  321. So I have looked upon you

  322. in the sanctuary,

  323. beholding your power

  324. and your glory.

  325. David in these Psalms

  326. is talking about seeking the Lord

  327. in the sanctuary,

  328. the temple on earth.

  329. Paul is urging us

  330. to seek the Lord

  331. in the heavenly sanctuary.

  332. To seek the things that are above.

  333. where Christ is.

  334. Right now.

  335. Seated at the right hand of God.

  336. Now you,

  337. if you've been around the block,

  338. you hear that phrase,

  339. seated at the right hand of God,

  340. and you're like,

  341. yeah, I know that verse.

  342. It's more about,

  343. more than just who Christ is,

  344. it's where He's at

  345. and what He's doing.

  346. It's a reference to Psalm 110.

  347. And if you want to turn in your Bibles

  348. to Psalm 110,

  349. Psalm 110.1

  350. is one of those Old Testament verses

  351. that is one of the most frequently quoted

  352. Old Testament verses

  353. in the New Testament.

  354. And the reason why,

  355. it's because Jesus Christ fulfills it.

  356. But,

  357. David,

  358. saying to God,

  359. says,

  360. the Lord says to my Lord,

  361. sit at my right hand

  362. until I make your enemies

  363. your footstool.

  364. Fulfilled in Christ,

  365. Jesus is known as David's greater son.

  366. That the Lord God

  367. has set all things

  368. as a footstool

  369. under the feet

  370. of Jesus Christ,

  371. David's Lord.

  372. And so what we're being told to do here

  373. is seek Christ above

  374. on His throne

  375. who's reigning over everything.

  376. And what this is to do

  377. is to reorient ourselves

  378. off this present earth

  379. and onto Christ's reign

  380. in heaven.

  381. His throne room

  382. where He is carrying out

  383. His new creation work

  384. on this fallen old earth.

  385. this is the one whom we seek

  386. and where we seek Him.

  387. We seek Him where He's at.

  388. Above.

  389. Sitting on His heavenly throne.

  390. He's reigning over all.

  391. It's contested

  392. now,

  393. but He's reigning over all.

  394. It reorients us

  395. to Christ's rule in heaven.

  396. There's this phrase

  397. in Daniel chapter 4 and 5.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  398. It's heaven rules.

  399. Jesus is ruling

  400. from heaven now.

  401. It's one of these truths

  402. that we need to get

  403. our minds on.

  404. Set your minds

  405. on the things above.

  406. Chapter 3, verse 2.

  407. What the Apostle Paul is doing.

  408. He says,

  409. Seek the things above.

  410. And then he says,

  411. By setting your mind

  412. on the things above.

  413. On Christ.

  414. We seek the things above

  415. by setting our minds

  416. on the things above.

  417. We renew our minds

  418. on the truth

  419. of who Jesus is

  420. and where He's at.

  421. Heaven rules.

  422. Jesus is reigning.

  423. Imagine you are working

  424. for a company

  425. whose headquarters

  426. are in Sydney, Australia.

  427. And you are living

  428. in Sydney, Australia.

  429. Down under.

  430. But that headquarters

  431. moves to Chicago, Illinois.

  432. But you're still in Sydney.

  433. You know what's going

  434. to need to happen.

  435. Your thinking is going

  436. to get reoriented.

  437. You're going to go

  438. from below thinking

  439. to above thinking

  440. in terms of

  441. your headquarters.

  442. Brothers and sisters,

  443. our headquarters

  444. is not on earth,

  445. but in heaven.

  446. Let me say that again.

  447. Our headquarters

  448. is not on earth.

  449. It's in heaven

  450. where Christ is.

  451. And so we need to

  452. learn to think

  453. oriented to heaven

  454. and where Jesus is.

  455. Not on the things of earth.

  456. We're to think

  457. of where Christ is.

  458. What He's doing.

  459. His work of a new creation.

  460. Making new creatures.

  461. Paul says,

  462. think on that.

  463. Not on the things

  464. that are on earth.

  465. And before you start thinking

  466. about particular material things,

  467. remember the context.

  468. In Colossians 2,

  469. 8-23,

  470. the Apostle Paul

  471. has been talking

  472. about the things

  473. of earth

  474. as philosophies,

  475. as lifestyles,

  476. as practices.

  477. Don't set your mind

  478. on those things.

  479. On all the isms.

  480. Expressive individualism,

  481. scientism,

  482. materialism,

  483. Christian nationalism.

  484. Don't set your mind

  485. on those.

  486. Set your minds above

  487. where Christ is.

  488. Think those thoughts.

  489. And with that reorientation

  490. of where Christ is,

  491. you align yourself

  492. with not just

  493. who Christ is

  494. and where He's at,

  495. but what He's doing.

  496. You're positioned

  497. to walk in a manner

  498. worthy of the Lord

  499. in the fallen earth.

  500. this is essential.

  501. This mindset,

  502. this Christ above aim

  503. and orientation,

  504. it's essential

  505. to a Christ-centered walk

  506. on earth.

  507. This is unseen, right?

  508. Christ at the right hand of God,

  509. ruling on high,

  510. it's unseen.

  511. Because we walk by faith,

  512. not by sight.

  513. We are inundated

  514. with thousands of claims

  515. every day

  516. through a variety

  517. of different screens

  518. and voices

  519. that are making the case daily

  520. that this world

  521. is all that there is.

  522. we must be vigilant

  523. in reminding ourselves,

  524. renewing our minds,

  525. setting our minds

  526. on Christ above

  527. to fight back,

  528. to push back,

  529. to remember,

  530. no, no, no, no,

  531. no, no, no.

  532. This season we're in,

  533. it's not just a presidential

  534. election cycle.

  535. No, no,

  536. there's other things,

  537. there's greater things

  538. going on.

  539. Christ's reign.

  540. So let me urge you

  541. to consider something.

  542. If you tend to get focused

  543. on this earth

  544. and you're realizing,

  545. man,

  546. I can take some ground

  547. and setting my mind

  548. on things above,

  549. you want to get Bible

  550. on your mind.

  551. You want to get Scripture

  552. in your heart.

  553. You want to allow Scripture

  554. to aim your soul.

  555. And one of the things

  556. you can do is

  557. write out of Colossians 3.1.

  558. They're just seven words.

  559. Write them somewhere.

  560. Write them on their heart,

  561. on your heart.

  562. Seek the things above

  563. where Christ is.

  564. Seek the things above

  565. where Christ is.

  566. Could you imagine

  567. popping out of bed?

  568. Seek the things above

  569. where Christ is.

  570. What a great way

  571. to start your day.

  572. And then you walk

  573. through the day

  574. with those seven words

  575. rolling around in your mind.

  576. It will aim you

  577. throughout the day.

  578. Seek the things above

  579. where Christ is.

  580. God is rewiring

  581. our priorities.

  582. He's rewiring

  583. the thinking

  584. of what we're aimed at

  585. day in and day out.

  586. It's absolutely essential,

  587. this way of thinking,

  588. meaning this aim

  589. as we walk

  590. on this earth

  591. day in and day out.

  592. We live for unseen things now.

  593. Things above,

  594. not things below.

  595. Things that are eternal.

  596. Things that are lasting.

  597. Not things that are

  598. temporary and passing.

  599. Nothing.

  600. Who you are in Christ,

  601. your identity,

  602. is to aim you

  603. at things above

  604. as we live

  605. in a certain time frame.

  606. And this is where

  607. we want to land

  608. the sermon.

  609. We're going to close it

  610. with these points,

  611. this last point.

  612. In verses 3 and 4,

  613. God is seeking

  614. to rewire our minds

  615. in a certain time.

  616. Church,

  617. what time is it?

  618. Let me show you.

  619. Right now,

  620. you woke up today,

  621. how did you frame

  622. your life,

  623. time frame wise?

  624. Well,

  625. I got to get to church,

  626. you know,

  627. we've got lunch afterwards.

  628. You kind of frame

  629. your life

  630. in terms of the day.

  631. Or maybe you frame

  632. your life in terms

  633. of your birth

  634. and your death.

  635. Maybe you frame

  636. your life

  637. in terms of your marriage,

  638. in terms of a season

  639. of parenting,

  640. or maybe you're framing

  641. your life in terms

  642. of your work life

  643. when you start work

  644. and when you will

  645. one day retire.

  646. Maybe you are framing

  647. your life in terms

  648. of a presidential

  649. election cycle.

  650. Paul starts verse 3

  651. with reason language.

  652. For you have died.

  653. So we set our minds

  654. on the things above,

  655. not on the earth

  656. because we've died

  657. with Christ.

  658. We've been raised

  659. with Christ.

  660. And we're ushered

  661. into a Christ-framed life.

  662. We, brothers and sisters,

  663. live in between

  664. the already of Christ's

  665. inaugurated reign

  666. and the not yet

  667. of the fulfillment

  668. of that reign.

  669. We live in between

  670. the first coming

  671. of Christ

  672. where He died,

  673. He was raised,

  674. and 40 days later

  675. He was ascended

  676. to the right hand

  677. of God

  678. where He's been reigning

  679. ever since,

  680. up until this point,

  681. until the second coming.

  682. His appearing

  683. when He returns.

  684. And at that point,

  685. He makes everything new.

  686. He judges all

  687. and recreates

  688. the heaven and the earth.

  689. So we live now

  690. between the already

  691. and the not yet.

  692. The beginning of Christ's reign

  693. and the fulfillment

  694. of Christ's reign.

  695. What time do we live on?

  696. How do we synchronize

  697. our watches together?

  698. We synchronize them together

  699. to Christ.

  700. Christ time.

  701. We live in between

  702. Christ's present reign

  703. and the fulfillment

  704. of His reign.

  705. Let me just show you

  706. from the text.

  707. In 3.3,

  708. we're said,

  709. for you have died

  710. and your life

  711. is hidden

  712. with Christ in God.

  713. Do you remember

  714. where Christ is right now?

  715. He's above in heaven.

  716. So when we're talking

  717. about our hiddenness,

  718. our out-of-sightness

  719. with Christ in God,

  720. it's located.

  721. Just like in Ephesians 2.6,

  722. the Apostle Paul

  723. talks about that

  724. Christians are seated

  725. in the heavenly places.

  726. Now,

  727. we have a spiritual place

  728. with Christ

  729. in the heavenly realm.

  730. And why that's important

  731. is what comes with that.

  732. Sometimes Christians think

  733. that because

  734. Jesus is in heaven,

  735. He leaves us exposed

  736. on earth.

  737. Exposed to demonic attacks.

  738. Exposed to wrongs

  739. that are outside of His reign.

  740. No.

  741. No.

  742. Believe it,

  743. you're hidden

  744. with Christ in God.

  745. Scholars think

  746. this is a reference

  747. to Psalm 27

  748. and I tend to agree with them.

  749. If you want to turn back

  750. to,

  751. if you want to look

  752. at Psalm 27, 5, and 6,

  753. hear what David says.

  754. For He will hide me

  755. in His shelter

  756. in the day of trouble.

  757. He will conceal me

  758. under the cover

  759. of His tent.

  760. He will lift me

  761. high upon a rock.

  762. And now my head

  763. shall be lifted up

  764. above my enemies

  765. all around me.

  766. And I will offer

  767. in His tent

  768. sacrifices

  769. with shouts of joy.

  770. I will sing

  771. and make melody

  772. to the Lord.

  773. Again, this is the temple

  774. on earth.

  775. We are hidden

  776. with Christ

  777. in the heavenly temple.

  778. We've got a place

  779. with Him.

  780. It's a picture

  781. of protection,

  782. guardedness,

  783. sheltering,

  784. concealment

  785. in the day of trouble.

  786. Oh,

  787. brother and sister,

  788. you've been hidden

  789. with Christ.

  790. Christ in God.

  791. You are not exposed.

  792. You're not in danger.

  793. You're protected in Him.

  794. In fact,

  795. you're defined by Him.

  796. You're united to Him.

  797. We are hidden

  798. with Christ in God

  799. as He reigns on high.

  800. This is the already

  801. of His present reign.

  802. We are hidden

  803. with Christ in God.

  804. Nothing

  805. and no one

  806. can separate us

  807. from the love of God

  808. in Christ Jesus.

  809. But there's also

  810. the not yet.

  811. We're hidden

  812. with Christ in God,

  813. but when He appears,

  814. verse 4,

  815. when Christ

  816. who is your life

  817. appears,

  818. then you also

  819. will appear

  820. with Him in glory.

  821. What we're talking about

  822. is a heavenly mindset,

  823. a heavenly framework

  824. of Christ's present reign

  825. and Christ's future

  826. fulfilling reign.

  827. One reign is hidden

  828. and unseen,

  829. but when He comes,

  830. it appears

  831. with fullness of glory.

  832. glory.

  833. Paul is pointing

  834. to the promise

  835. that Jesus has made

  836. that He Himself

  837. will come back

  838. in glory.

  839. That's Matthew 24,

  840. 36-51,

  841. where Jesus talks

  842. about His second coming

  843. will be like a thief.

  844. In fact,

  845. it shows up so much

  846. in the New Testament.

  847. 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5,

  848. the Thessalonians

  849. were to encourage

  850. one another

  851. with the promised return

  852. of Jesus Christ.

  853. 1 Corinthians 15,

  854. there's going to be

  855. a blast

  856. of a trumpet

  857. of an archangel

  858. and Christ will return.

  859. Don't lose heart.

  860. Titus 2,

  861. 11-15,

  862. we are all

  863. waiting

  864. for the glorious

  865. appearing

  866. of our God and Savior,

  867. Jesus Christ.

  868. And so we press on,

  869. growing in self-control,

  870. Revelation 19,

  871. 11-16,

  872. Jesus is pictured

  873. as a returning

  874. victor

  875. on a white war horse

  876. with a number of titles.

  877. When we read here,

  878. when Christ,

  879. who is your life,

  880. appears,

  881. then He will also appear

  882. with Him in glory.

  883. Jesus,

  884. we're one day closer,

  885. brothers and sisters,

  886. to this

  887. surprise return

  888. of Jesus.

  889. Glorious

  890. and awesome

  891. and for those

  892. who don't believe,

  893. terrifying.

  894. He's no longer

  895. hidden.

  896. He appears

  897. fully for all

  898. to see.

  899. And we,

  900. who have been

  901. united with Him

  902. in His death

  903. and resurrection,

  904. we,

  905. who have been

  906. hidden with Him

  907. in God

  908. during His present reign,

  909. we will appear

  910. with Him

  911. in glory

  912. when He returns.

  913. This promise

  914. of glorious,

  915. His glorious appearing,

  916. it,

  917. it puts hope

  918. in our hearts.

  919. It,

  920. it gets a time frame

  921. in place.

  922. It's a,

  923. it's a Christ

  924. frame way

  925. of thinking

  926. and living.

  927. We,

  928. we live in between

  929. the first coming

  930. and the second coming.

  931. We live in between

  932. His hidden,

  933. present reign

  934. and His appearing

  935. when He returns

  936. and makes

  937. all things

  938. right.

  939. And this kind of

  940. Christ-framed

  941. time frame

  942. is absolutely

  943. essential

  944. to living

  945. a Christ-central

  946. life

  947. on earth.

  948. What time

  949. is it,

  950. church?

  951. Who you are

  952. in Christ

  953. aims you

  954. at where

  955. Christ is

  956. in between

  957. the already

  958. and not yet

  959. of Christ's

  960. appearing.

  961. Who you are,

  962. you,

  963. Christian,

  964. have a Christ-shaped

  965. identity.

  966. What's your aim?

  967. Christ above

  968. aim.

  969. When you live,

  970. you live

  971. as I do

  972. between Christ's

  973. first coming

  974. and His second.

  975. Between the already

  976. and the not yet

  977. in these three

  978. elements,

  979. they shape

  980. our minds

  981. so that we can

  982. live for Christ

  983. on earth

  984. by faith.

  985. Now,

  986. I just want to

  987. point you to something.

  988. because this

  989. isn't just

  990. kind of a little

  991. deposit

  992. and Paul

  993. moves on.

  994. He tells us

  995. these things

  996. here in 3,

  997. 1 through 4

  998. because in 3,

  999. 5,

  1000. and through 11,

  1001. he gets into

  1002. this.

  1003. He says,

  1004. who you are,

  1005. it requires you,

  1006. who you are

  1007. in Christ

  1008. will now require

  1009. you to put

  1010. your sin

  1011. to death,

  1012. to put it

  1013. off

  1014. on earth.

  1015. Christ.

  1016. And then in

  1017. 12 through 17,

  1018. who you are

  1019. in Christ,

  1020. your identity

  1021. with Him

  1022. requires you

  1023. to put on

  1024. Christ-like

  1025. character

  1026. and conduct.

  1027. And then he

  1028. takes that way

  1029. of thinking

  1030. of putting off

  1031. sin and putting

  1032. on Christ-likeness,

  1033. he brings it

  1034. into our

  1035. everyday lives.

  1036. In verses

  1037. 18 and 19,

  1038. we live out

  1039. our identity

  1040. in Christ

  1041. in our marriages,

  1042. wives and husbands.

  1043. We live out

  1044. this identity

  1045. in Christ,

  1046. verses 20 and 21

  1047. of chapter 3,

  1048. in our families,

  1049. children and parents.

  1050. And then in

  1051. chapter 3,

  1052. verses 22 through 4,

  1053. 1,

  1054. we live out

  1055. this identity

  1056. in Christ

  1057. with this

  1058. aim

  1059. and time frame

  1060. in our workplaces.

  1061. Whether we have

  1062. a subordinate

  1063. role or a

  1064. supervisory role,

  1065. we're living

  1066. for Christ.

  1067. And this kind

  1068. of thinking

  1069. is absolutely

  1070. crucial to that.

  1071. Your identity

  1072. in Christ

  1073. informs all

  1074. of who you are.

  1075. All of who

  1076. you are.

  1077. When you

  1078. became a Christian,

  1079. Christ

  1080. purchased you

  1081. with his blood

  1082. for himself.

  1083. Change of ownership.

  1084. And he swapped

  1085. out your box.

  1086. He took out

  1087. that heart of stone

  1088. and put in

  1089. a fleshly,

  1090. soft heart

  1091. to live

  1092. for him.

  1093. And he is

  1094. rewiring

  1095. our thinking.

  1096. How we think

  1097. about ourselves,

  1098. what our aim is,

  1099. even the time frame

  1100. that we're on.

  1101. Christ the King

  1102. Church,

1103. what time are we on?

  1104. One more time.

  1105. Christ's time.

  1106. Do you know why?

  1107. Christ

  1108. is

  1109. our

  1110. life.

  1111. God in heaven,

1112. we thank you so much

  1113. for your word.

  1114. Would you use

  1115. your word

  1116. to form

  1117. our thinking

  1118. so that

  1119. we can live

  1120. faithfully

  1121. with you

  1122. as the center

  1123. of all

  1124. that there is.

  1125. Bring us

  1126. into that reality

  1127. more and more.

  1128. It is reality.

  1129. Father,

  1130. would you pour out

  1131. your spirit?

  1132. Would you press

  1133. these truths

  1134. into our being

  1135. and that,

  1136. God,

1137. you would set us free?

  1138. We pray this

  1139. in Jesus' name.

  1140. Amen.
