  1. You may be seated.

  2. Kiddos, you're in with us this morning,

  3. and I just want to let you know,

  4. children, in with us,

  5. this first opening story

  6. is a made-up pretend story.

  7. Would you open up your Bibles to Colossians 3?

  8. I'm going to be preaching on 5 through 11,

  9. but I'm going to read 1 through 11.

  10. It's on page 1169.

  11. And 1170 of your pew Bibles.

  12. Colossians 3, 1.

  13. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  14. seek the things that are above,

  15. where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

  16. Set your minds on things that are above,

  17. not on things that are on earth.

  18. For you have died,

  19. and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  20. When Christ, who is your life, appears,

  21. then you also will appear with him in glory.

  22. Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you,

  23. sexual immorality, impurity, passion,

  24. evil desire, and covetousness,

  25. which is idolatry.

  26. On account of these, the wrath of God is coming.

  27. In these, you too once walked when you were living in them.

  28. But now you must put them all away.

  29. Anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

  30. Do not lie to one another,

  31. seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices,

  32. and have put on the new self,

  33. which is being renewed in the knowledge

  34. after the image of its creator.

  35. Here, there is not Greek and Jew,

  36. circumcised and uncircumcised,

  37. barbarian, Scythian, slave, free,

  38. but Christ is all and in all.

  39. May God bless the reading, hearing of his word.

  40. This is pretend.

  41. Imagine a young man in desperate need of a new suit.

  42. New to him.

  43. Broke and unwilling to ask for help,

  44. he gets an idea.

  45. That night, he sneaks into Green Ridge Cemetery,

  46. just south of here,

  47. and he digs up the corpse of a man

  48. who's been dead for eight years,

  49. who just happens to be a 42 regular,

  50. 36-inch waist, 30-inch inseam.

  51. The living man removes the grave clothes

  52. off the dead man,

  53. puts the dead man back into the coffin,

  54. buries him,

  55. and then puts on the dead man's grave clothes.

  56. Stains of death.

  57. Smell of death.

  58. The crusty texture of death.

  59. That grave suit certainly is disintegrating.

  60. Well, the next day,

  61. that young man is walking along the harbor side

  62. in these grave clothes.

  63. And walking towards him

  64. is this bright-eyed older woman

  65. who sees this young man in these grave clothes,

  66. and so she approaches him and asks,

  67. young man,

  68. why would someone alive

  69. be wearing the grave clothes

  70. of someone dead?

  71. She goes on to say,

  72. come with me.

  73. Let's dispose of those old grave clothes.

  74. They don't belong on you.

  75. I'll get you a new lively suit

  76. that you were born to wear.

  77. What are you, a 42 regular?

  78. Christian,

  79. why would someone made alive

  80. continue wearing the clothes

  81. of someone dead?

  82. Christian, you've been made alive in Christ.

  83. So put off the old clothes of the grave.

  84. And make new room for the new.

  85. Those made new,

  86. put off the sin of old.

  87. Three points from this passage.

  88. Christian, you've been made new.

  89. Second point,

  90. put away the old.

  91. Third point,

  92. make room for the new.

  93. Why would someone made alive in Christ

  94. continue wearing the clothes

  95. of those dead,

  96. separated from Christ?

  97. It's not who you are anymore.

  98. Let's look at this first point,

  99. your new self.

  100. Two weeks ago,

  101. I preached on chapter three,

  102. one through four.

  103. And I made the case,

  104. we need to have our thinking rewired.

  105. Your identity now is in Christ.

  106. Remember 220,

  107. you've died with Christ.

  108. Remember 3.1,

  109. you've been raised with Christ.

  110. We are now united with Christ

  111. in his death and resurrection.

  112. We're not who we used to be.

  113. We have a new identity.

  114. And we have a new aim in Christ.

  115. We set our minds on the things above

  116. where Christ is.

  117. He's our aim.

  118. He's our priority.

  119. And we're on a new time frame.

  120. We live in between Christ's first coming

  121. and his second coming.

  122. We live in the midst of the already and not yet.

  123. Church, what time are we on?

  124. Christ time.

  125. And all of this informs

  126. a Christ central way of thinking and living.

  127. It's who we are now.

  128. Well, in verses five and 11,

  129. Paul continues to develop this new way

  130. of thinking about ourselves

  131. and about our relationship to sin.

  132. In verses seven and eight,

  133. he develops this thinking about ourselves

  134. in terms of before and after.

  135. Look at verse seven.

  136. In these, you too once walked

  137. when you were living in them.

  138. The things that he's talking about,

  139. the them that you were living in,

  140. points back to verse five,

  141. a list of sexual sin.

  142. I'll come back to that in a little bit.

  143. But he's saying,

  144. that was your old grave clothes.

  145. That was before.

  146. Did you see the word once?

  147. See the word when?

  148. Those are time markers

  149. pointing back before you were converted to Christ.

  150. Before, Jesus graciously changed you.

  151. And then in verse eight, of course,

  152. is the but now.

  153. You once were that

  154. when you were living in them.

  155. You're walking in a manner

  156. worthy of yourself and sin,

  157. not Christ.

  158. Before, but now,

  159. we put those things all away.

  160. Because we've been made new.

  161. So there's this development

  162. of how we think about ourselves

  163. in terms of the before and after.

  164. So it's just very helpful.

  165. There's the before mic

  166. when I was living for sin.

  167. And there's the after mic

  168. where Christ is the controlling center

  169. of my life more and more.

  170. But there's also another

  171. kind of line of development.

  172. In verses nine and ten,

  173. it's along the lines of old and new.

  174. Verse nine,

  175. do not lie to one another.

  176. Why?

  177. Why?

  178. Seeing that you have put off

  179. the old self with its practices

  180. and have put on the new self,

  181. which is being renewed in knowledge

  182. after the image of its creator.

  183. So not just before and after,

  184. it's old and new.

  185. We're talking about the nature

  186. of who you were

  187. before and after your conversion,

  188. the spiritual quality

  189. of who you were

  190. and who you are.

  191. So when Paul talks about,

  192. in verse nine,

  193. the old self,

  194. that's the way the apostle Paul

  195. is talking about

  196. who you were

  197. before you were converted to Christ.

  198. And just to spell that out

  199. a little bit,

  200. that's when you were separated

  201. from God

  202. because of your sin.

  203. That's when you were

  204. spiritually dead.

  205. that's when you were

  206. under God's wrath

  207. justly because of the sin

  208. that you were committing

  209. against him.

  210. You were walking in them.

  211. You were living in them

  212. because that qualitatively

  213. is who you were.

  214. You were spiritually dead

  215. in those grave clothes.

  216. Well, those just came

  217. naturally to you.

  218. Another way to think about it

  219. is in terms of

  220. chapter one,

  221. verse 13.

  222. We read this.

  223. He has delivered us

  224. from the domain of darkness

  225. and transferred us

  226. to the kingdom

  227. of the beloved son.

  228. The before you,

  229. the old self you,

  230. was you

  231. when you were living

  232. in the domain of darkness.

  233. That's who you were.

  234. Christ was not

  235. the controlling,

  236. life-giving,

  237. treasure center

  238. of your life.

  239. You were.

  240. Sin was.

  241. And what Paul says

  242. in verse nine

  243. is that

  244. that's been put off.

  245. It's no longer

  246. who you are.

  247. If you've put your faith

  248. in Jesus Christ,

  249. that old self

  250. is before

  251. before.

  252. You were once

  253. clothed

  254. in the old self

  255. with its

  256. evil practices,

  257. but that's not

  258. who you are anymore.

  259. That old self

  260. died

  261. with Christ.

  262. The new self,

  263. verse 10,

  264. is Paul's way

  265. of describing

  266. who you are now

  267. having been raised

  268. with Christ

  269. to newness of life.

  270. Elsewhere,

  271. in 2 Corinthians 5,

  272. the apostle Paul

  273. talks about it like this.

  274. You're a new creation.

  275. The old

  276. has gone.

  277. The new

  278. has come.

  279. You're a new creation

  280. in Christ.

  281. You've been united

  282. with Christ

  283. to his death

  284. and resurrection

  285. and you've been

  286. made new.

  287. Dead to sin,

  288. alive to God.

  289. He has forgiven

  290. all of your sins,

  291. all of them.

  292. That's why God's wrath

  293. is no longer

  294. over your head.

  295. There is therefore

  296. now no condemnation

  297. for those who are

  298. in Christ Jesus.

  299. We no longer walk

  300. according to the

  301. practices of the

  302. old self,

  303. but we walk now

  304. in a manner

  305. worthy of the Lord.

  306. He's our aim.

  307. He's our aim.

  308. He has delivered us

  309. from the domain

  310. of darkness,

  311. old self before,

  312. and transferred us

  313. into the kingdom

  314. of the beloved son,

  315. the kingdom

  316. of the new selves,

  317. the community

  318. of the new,

  319. and we live

  320. for him now.

  321. So,

  322. here we have

  323. your new self

  324. united to Christ.

  325. There's a before,

  326. there is a old,

  327. old self,

  328. old man

  329. that's no longer

  330. died with Christ

  331. and now you're new,

  332. brother, sister,

  333. in Christ.

  334. You're new.

  335. Christ has made you new.

  336. By virtue of being,

  337. you being united to him,

  338. you're new.

  339. Christ has made you new.

  340. Does anybody remember

  341. that great show

  342. way back?

  343. Extreme Makeover

  344. House Edition.

  345. Ty Pennington

  346. and his crew.

  347. Well,

  348. here's what would happen.

  349. There would be this family

  350. and they're living

  351. in this old,

  352. dilapidated house

  353. and they would be sent

  354. to like Disney World

  355. for a week

  356. and Ty and his crew

  357. would come in

  358. and they'd rebuild the house.

  359. They'd bring the family

  360. back in

  361. and they'd put them

  362. behind this bus

  363. and that bus,

  364. they would say,

  365. move that bus

  366. and that bus would move back

  367. and then that family

  368. would see

  369. a new updated house.

  370. Do you remember

  371. what they do?

  372. Faint.

  373. No way.

  374. Joyous.

  375. The old is gone.

  376. The new has come.

  377. The new has come.

  378. Christian,

  379. you're an extreme makeover.

  380. Christ edition.

  381. That's who you are.

  382. The old is gone.

  383. The new has come.

  384. So I got a question for you.

  385. I'm going to ask you

  386. a question.

  387. If you're a Christian

  388. in the room,

  389. I want you to answer it.

  390. I'm going to say,

  391. who are you?

  392. And you're going to tell me,

  393. I've been made new.

  394. Who are you?

  395. I've been made new.

  396. Here we go.

  397. It's who you are now.

  398. It's your new self.

  399. Now we move on to the next point.

  400. Now that you've been made new,

  401. we've been made new,

  402. we must put away the sins of old

  403. because it's not who you are anymore.

  404. Why would someone living

  405. be wearing the grave clothes

  406. of someone who is dead?

  407. In our passage,

  408. in verses five and eight,

  409. there are two sets of grave clothes

  410. of the old man

  411. when you live in the domain of darkness

  412. that we cannot wear anymore

  413. because it's not who we are.

  414. We need to put them away.

  415. We need to put them to death.

  416. And the two wardrobes

  417. are sexual sin

  418. and sinful speech.

  419. Let's take one at a time.

  420. In verse five,

  421. Paul lists out this wardrobe

  422. of grave clothes

  423. of sexual sin.

  424. He lists five of them.

  425. Sexual immorality,

  426. where we get the word porneia.

  427. Impurity, passion, evil desires,

  428. and covetousness.

  429. Now I know what you're thinking.

  430. Covetousness?

  431. Why is that?

  432. What's that doing in a sin list

  433. of sexual sin?

  434. In Exodus chapter 20, verse 17,

    Exodus 20:17

  435. it's the list,

  436. 20 is the listing of the 10 commandments.

  437. Remember those?

  438. The big 10?

  439. The 10th

  440. is a command against coveting.

  441. And God says,

  442. you shall not covet.

  443. You shall not covet

  444. your neighbor's house.

  445. You shall not covet

  446. your neighbor's wife.

  447. Do you know what I'm saying?

  448. If covetousness

  449. is a kind of greed,

  450. he's talking about

  451. sexual greed.

  452. Wanting someone sexually

  453. that you are not allowed to have.

  454. That's the covetousness

  455. he's talking about here,

  456. the apostle Paul.

  457. It actually

  458. sums up the whole list.

  459. It's a sexual greed

  460. that's forbidden by God.

  461. Now here's what you need to know

  462. about these sexual sins.

  463. They're all distortions

  464. of God's good gift

  465. and design

  466. of sexuality.

  467. We can't make

  468. the categorical mistake

  469. of thinking that sex is bad,

  470. sex is wrong.

  471. It's God's good gift to us.

  472. So just to be very clear,

  473. the gold standard

  474. in which God gives us

  475. for us to enjoy

  476. our sexuality

  477. is in marriage.

  478. And so in Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2:24

  479. verses 24 and 25,

  480. God gives Eve to Adam

  481. and they were both naked

  482. and not ashamed.

  483. They became one flesh

  484. and what that's a picture of

  485. is the only place

  486. that God has given

  487. for our good

  488. that we can enjoy

  489. this good gift.

  490. You know what that means?

  491. Anything outside,

  492. any sexual experience

  493. pursuit outside

  494. of these biblical gold standard

  495. of one chromosomal man

  496. and one chromosomal woman

  497. exclusively committed

  498. to each other

  499. before life,

  500. before God,

  501. anything out of that

  502. is a distortion

  503. of God's good gift.

  504. It's sin.

  505. It's wrong.

  506. Based upon what God says.

  507. It's even idolatrous.

  508. Do you know why

  509. it's idolatrous?

  510. Here's what happens.

  511. People reject God

  512. and yet they're still worshipers.

  513. And so you know what they'll worship

  514. in place of God?

  515. Something that makes them happy.

  516. Sexual pleasure

  517. falls into that.

  518. And so what happens is,

  519. this is Romans 1,

  520. people reject God

  521. and they will replace him

  522. with distorted sexual practices.

  523. It's idolatrous

  524. and therefore provokes

  525. God's wrath.

  526. So let me just be crystal clear.

  527. Marital infidelity

  528. when one spouse

  529. of a marriage

  530. is pursuing sexual relationships

  531. outside of that marriage.

  532. That's sin.

  533. That's wrong.

  534. That's grave clothes.

  535. That's old man living.

  536. That's old man living.

  537. That's old man living.

  538. Unmarried sexual enjoyment.

  539. Even when it's committed partners

  540. but you're not married

  541. or it's friends with benefits.

  542. These things are outside of God's good design.

  543. They're wrong.

  544. Pornography in all of its forms,

  545. it's wrong.

  546. It's outside of God's good design.

  547. Self-sex,

  548. homosexuality sex,

  549. it's all outside of God's good design.

  550. Now the world will say,

  551. the earth will say,

  552. these earthly desires,

  553. those who practice them

  554. will say something like this.

  555. Well,

  556. well,

  557. they're in vogue.

  558. They're fashionable.

  559. It's okay.

  560. But God's word is crystal clear.

  561. This is sin.

  562. This is wrong.

  563. It's not his design.

  564. It's not to experience his goodness

  565. along his terms.

  566. So what must we do?

  567. What happens if you're in the room

  568. and you're having an extramarital affair right now?

  569. What happens if you're in the room

  570. and you're looking at pornography?

  571. What happens if you're in the room

  572. and you're having a relationship,

  573. you're not married but with another person

  574. and it's sexual in nature,

  575. what do you do?

  576. The first three words of verse five.

  577. Put it to death.

  578. And what that means is this.

  579. At the basic sense,

  580. it's considering these sexual practices

  581. that are not God's design

  582. as having been put to death

  583. with Christ at the cross.

  584. That's old self.

  585. It's not who you are anymore.

  586. It's not me.

  587. It's not me.

  588. You know those medical dramas

  589. where a critically injured patient

  590. gets rolled into an ER?

  591. The doctor rolls up,

  592. assesses,

  593. starts doing CPR,

  594. takes out those pad things,

  595. doesn't work.

  596. CPR more.

  597. And despite all this,

  598. the doctor has done

  599. in order to resuscitate this person,

  600. the person dies.

  601. Do you know what the doctor does at that point?

  602. You've seen it.

  603. They say something like,

  604. I'm calling it.

  605. Time of death,

  606. 6.43 a.m.

  607. with a little look.

  608. Brothers and sisters,

  609. here's how we put things to death.

  610. You've got sexual sin in your life.

  611. You've got to call it.

  612. You're dead.

  613. When you were converted,

  614. you were united to Christ's death

  615. and resurrection.

  616. And Christ's death,

  617. scholars say,

  618. took place on April 3rd,

  619. 33 A.D.

  620. at 3 p.m.

  621. You call it.

  622. That died.

  623. April 3rd,

  624. 33 A.D.

  625. 3 p.m.

  626. It's not me anymore.

  627. It died with Christ

  628. on the cross.

  629. We don't wear

  630. these grave clothes

  631. of sexual sin anymore

  632. because it's not who we are anymore.

  633. It's idolatrous.

  634. And it's not loving your neighbor.

  635. If I asked for a show of hands,

  636. every hand would go up.

  637. Who has experienced,

  638. don't raise your hands.

  639. I'll raise mine for us all.

  640. Who in this room

  641. has experienced

  642. the disintegration of relationships,

  643. the destruction of relationships

  644. as a result of sexual sin?

  645. everybody's hand goes up.

  646. Whether it's something you've done

  647. or something someone else has done

  648. that has affected you,

  649. we've all experienced the fallout.

  650. it's not loving your neighbor.

  651. That sin

  652. died with your old self

  653. on the cross

  654. with Jesus Christ.

  655. it's not who you are.

  656. It might be common to man.

  657. It might be fashionable

  658. in this world at this time.

  659. It's idolatrous in God's sight.

  660. And you stand on that.

  661. The second set of clothes,

  662. grave clothes,

  663. is raised in verse 8.

  664. We're to put away

  665. all anger,

  666. wrath,

  667. malice,

  668. slander,

  669. and obscene talk.

  670. Do you know what they all have in common?

  671. Where they're coming from.

  672. From

  673. your

  674. mouth.

  675. anger

  676. from your mouth.

  677. Wrath

  678. from your mouth.

  679. Malice

  680. from your mouth.

  681. Slander,

  682. which we get the word

  683. blasphemy

  684. from.

  685. It's attributing,

  686. it's saying

  687. something

  688. is true of someone

  689. when it's not.

  690. And obscene talk,

  691. filthy talk.

  692. From your mouth.

  693. Before.

  694. This is like

  695. your sexuality.

  696. Before you were converted

  697. and you were the controlling center

  698. of your life,

  699. then your controlling center

  700. governed your sexuality.

  701. And it's the same

  702. with your speech.

  703. Before you were converted

  704. to Christ,

  705. before he made you new,

  706. because you were the controlling center,

  707. your sin was

  708. it governed your speech.

  709. You spoke

  710. out of it.

  711. In Luke 6,

  712. Jesus is teaching

  713. and helping his disciples

  714. kind of see false teachers.

  715. And what he says

  716. is helpful for us all,

  717. not just for false teachers,

  718. but to see stuff in ourselves.

  719. And he talks about how

  720. a tree is known

  721. by its fruit,

  722. that the evil treasure

  723. that someone stores up,

  724. it bears evil fruit,

  725. evil speech.

  726. The good treasure

  727. someone stores up

  728. in their heart,

  729. well,

  730. it bears the fruit of,

  731. good fruit.

  732. And then Jesus says,

  733. out of the abundance

  734. of the heart,

  735. the mouth speaks.

  736. Do you know why

  737. we speak sinfully?

  738. In anger

  739. and in wrath

  740. and in malice,

  741. slander people

  742. obscenely?

  743. It's because

  744. sin is still in our hearts.

  745. We've been made new,

  746. yet there's this

  747. still sinful nature

  748. that's got to be put to death

  749. and put down.

  750. And sometimes we go back

  751. to the old way

  752. of our speaking

  753. in which we are

  754. speaking out of self-protection.

  755. We are speaking

  756. to attack someone.

  757. We are speaking,

  758. well, you know what?

  759. Here's another tactic.

  760. You don't speak,

  761. you give the silent treatment,

  762. but it's actually

  763. a verbal attack of a sort.

  764. These are old ways

  765. of speaking.

  766. And these sins

  767. are common to man.

  768. Now, if you are regularly

  769. wearing these grave clothes,

  770. or better yet,

  771. you are speaking

  772. grave talk,

  773. I want to help you

  774. become convinced

  775. of the sinfulness

  776. of those things.

  777. Read James chapter 3

    James 3:7–12

  778. verses 7 through 12.

  779. Take a look at

  780. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4:29

  781. verses 29, 30.

  782. In fact,

  783. let's go there right now.

  784. Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  785. 29 through 30,

  786. we taught our kids

  787. verse 29.

  788. They were grown up,

  789. we would drop that dime

  790. like twice a week,

  791. three times a week.

  792. In verse 29

  793. of Ephesians 4

  794. says this,

  795. let no corrupting talk

  796. come out of your mouths,

  797. but only such

  798. as is good for building up,

  799. as fits the occasion,

  800. that it may give grace

  801. to those who hear.

  802. That's how we speak now

  803. with Christ,

  804. our treasured center,

  805. functioning.

  806. We're not to speak

  807. grave talk.

  808. It tears people down.

  809. It's disintegrating

  810. of relationship.

  811. But it's verse 30

  812. that I want you to see

  813. in the connection

  814. that's being made.

  815. Verse 30,

  816. seemingly out of nowhere,

  817. he says,

  818. and do not grieve

  819. the Holy Spirit of God

  820. by which you've been sealed

  821. for the day of redemption.

  822. Your speech,

  823. your trash talk,

  824. it grieves the Holy Spirit.

  825. Do you know why?

  826. Do you know what the Holy Spirit

  827. is seeking to do

  828. in our church?

  829. The Holy Spirit

  830. is seeking for us

  831. to speak the truth

  832. in love to one another,

  833. to build up our church,

  834. to unite our church.

  835. And when we speak

  836. grave talk,

  837. trash talk,

  838. it goes against

  839. the very work

  840. that the Holy Spirit

  841. is seeking to do

  842. in our midst.

  843. it grieves

  844. the Holy Spirit.

  845. So what do we do?

  846. We put this kind of talk away,

  847. Paul says,

  848. in verse 8.

  849. Put it away.

  850. It's another way

  851. of talking about

  852. putting it to death.

  853. April 3rd,

  854. 80.33,

  855. 3 p.m.,

  856. dead.

  857. That stuff

  858. doesn't come out

  859. of this mouth anymore

  860. because it's dead.

  861. this is a mouth

  862. made new.

  863. This is a new self.

  864. I'm not going there.

  865. We put this

  866. trash talk

  867. in the trash can

  868. because it's not

  869. who we are anymore.

  870. It grieves God

  871. and it's unloving

  872. to others.

  873. For every couple

  874. I get to marry,

  875. I walk them through

  876. a premarital counseling

  877. sequence

  878. and one of the articles

  879. I have them read

  880. is by Paul David Tripp.

  881. It's called

  882. Speaking Redemptively.

  883. It's a thick,

  884. dense article,

  885. but it is so good.

  886. Kelly has put

  887. 20 of those articles

  888. at the connect desk

  889. in that vestibule

  890. to my right.

  891. Pick one up.

  892. It'll help you

  893. think about

  894. your speech more.

  895. Why would someone

  896. living

  897. be wearing

  898. the grave clothes

  899. of someone

  900. who's died?

  901. we put these

  902. things to death

  903. and we put them

  904. away

  905. is another way

  906. of talking about

  907. repenting of your sin.

  908. Turning from your sin.

  909. Turning to Christ

  910. decisively.

  911. And when we do,

  912. we make space

  913. for something new.

  914. We put off the old

  915. and now point three,

  916. we make room

  917. for the new.

  918. What we have

  919. in verse 11,

  920. let me read it.

  921. Here there is not

  922. Greek and Jew,

  923. circumcised and uncircumcised,

  924. barbarian,

  925. Scythian,

  926. slave,

  927. free,

  928. but Christ is all

  929. in all.

  930. Do you know

  931. what we have here?

  932. We have a radical

  933. new way

  934. of relating

  935. with one another.

  936. Let me help you see it.

  937. There are four pairings

  938. of old man relating

  939. where you would relate

  940. to other people

  941. according to a worldly way,

  942. an earthly way.

  943. Here are the pairs.

  944. Here there is not

  945. Greek and Jew.

  946. It's measuring somebody up

  947. based upon their culture,

  948. their background,

  949. their religious kind

  950. of practices.

  951. He goes on to say,

  952. here,

  953. there is not

  954. Greek

  955. or Jew,

  956. circumcised and uncircumcision.

  957. It's, again,

  958. a difference

  959. between cultures

  960. and physical

  961. distinctions.

  962. Don't measure people up

  963. like that.

  964. That's an old way

  965. of doing things.

  966. The next one

  967. is barbarian,

  968. Scythian.

  969. You're like,

  970. whoa,

  971. barbarian,

  972. Scythian.

  973. These are two types

  974. of Gentiles.

  975. And barbarians

  976. were Gentiles

  977. who didn't speak

  978. Greek.

  979. And the Scythians,

  980. well,

  981. they were like,

  982. the bottom of the barrel

  983. when it comes to Gentiles.

  984. Has anybody heard

  985. the expression

  986. of white trash?

  987. Scythians

  988. were the white trash

  989. of Gentiles

  990. in the first century.

  991. That's how they were

  992. looked on.

  993. So you have this,

  994. within Gentiles,

  995. you have this

  996. measuring up

  997. category.

  998. Oh,

  999. you're white trash.

  1000. I'm a barbarian.

  1001. And then,

  1002. of course,

1003. there is slave and free

  1004. who's got the power.

  1005. These are old

  1006. ways

  1007. of relating,

  1008. of measuring up.

  1009. And when Paul says,

  1010. here,

  1011. he's saying,

  1012. among you,

  1013. church.

  1014. Here,

  1015. there is

  1016. none of that.

  1017. Among you,

  1018. none of that.

  1019. None of that

  1020. old,

  1021. Christ-less

  1022. way

  1023. of relating

  1024. to one another.

  1025. Every one of those

  1026. pairings

  1027. had hostility

  1028. within it.

  1029. today,

  1030. we

  1031. measure people up

1032. in a variety of ways

  1033. by physical beauty,

  1034. by physical health,

  1035. by the appearance

  1036. of physical wealth,

1037. of having it all together.

  1038. We measure people up

  1039. politically.

  1040. We measure people up

  1041. educationally.

  1042. We measure people up

  1043. racially.

  1044. We measure people up

  1045. according to their gender,

  1046. according to their

  1047. moral adherence.

  1048. We do this.

  1049. We default

  1050. into a measuring up

  1051. of one another.

  1052. And when it comes

  1053. into the church,

  1054. it's an old way.

  1055. These are grave clothes,

  1056. brothers and sisters.

  1057. believers.

  1058. In fact,

  1059. Paul

  1060. introduces a whole

  1061. new category

  1062. for our church

  1063. in how to relate

  1064. with one another.

  1065. It's those last words.

  1066. But Christ

  1067. is all

  1068. and in all.

1069. You could say it like this.

  1070. Here,

  1071. Christ is all

  1072. and in all.

  1073. Christ is our

  1074. everything.

  1075. Christ defines us.

  1076. Christ unites us.

  1077. We don't do

  1078. the old stuff anymore.

  1079. We live here now.

  1080. That's how we relate

  1081. with one another.

  1082. We put out

  1083. those old clothes.

  1084. Christ

  1085. is all.

  1086. He is our everything.

  1087. He is our life.

  1088. He made us new.

  1089. Because we've been

  1090. united to him

  1091. in his death

  1092. and resurrection,

  1093. we've been made new.

1094. So if I were to point

  1095. to different Christians

  1096. in the room,

  1097. I'd be like,

  1098. he's new.

  1099. He's in Christ.

  1100. She's in Christ.

  1101. Born again.

  1102. Regenerated.

  1103. Yep, yep, yep.

  1104. He's changed us.

1105. And so what that means

  1106. is he defines us.

  1107. Our union with Christ

  1108. is more important

  1109. than what defines us

  1110. politically.

  1111. Our union with Christ

  1112. is more important

  1113. than what defines us,

  1114. how we come down

  1115. on social issues

  1116. or race

  1117. or gender.

  1118. What elevates us,

  1119. what defines us

  1120. are none of these

  1121. old ways

  1122. but Christ.

1123. in the book of Ephesians,

  1124. the apostle Paul

  1125. talks about

  1126. those in Christ

  1127. as a whole new

  1128. people group.

  1129. Neither Jew,

  1130. neither Gentile,

  1131. a whole new

  1132. people group.

  1133. The blood bod

  1134. of God.

  1135. In chapter 1,

  1136. verse 18,

  1137. the apostle Paul

  1138. is talking about

  1139. how awesome

  1140. Jesus is.

  1141. 1.17,

  1142. and he is before

  1143. all things

  1144. and in him

  1145. all things

  1146. hold together.

  1147. Verse 18,

1148. and he is the head

  1149. of the body,

  1150. the church,

  1151. he's the beginning,

  1152. the firstborn

  1153. from the dead

  1154. that in everything

  1155. he might be preeminent.

  1156. In our relationships

  1157. he's preeminent.

  1158. He defines us.

  1159. And then there's

  1160. Christ in all.

  1161. He's in every one

  1162. of us.

  1163. He defines us.

1164. He's in each of us.

  1165. And therefore,

  1166. he unites us.

  1167. Do you know,

  1168. I've used this

  1169. illustration before,

  1170. so bear with me.

  1171. Pretend with me

  1172. there are two

  1173. baby grand pianos

  1174. on the stage.

  1175. They're both in tune.

  1176. If you hit center

  1177. C in one,

  1178. you will hear

  1179. center C

  1180. resonate in the other.

  1181. Our center C

  1182. is Christ central.

  1183. And so when we

  1184. hit Christ central

  1185. as the preeminent,

  1186. uniting,

  1187. defining

  1188. person of our lives,

  1189. it resonates

  1190. with us all.

  1191. Christ is all.

  1192. He defines us.

  1193. Christ is all.

  1194. He unites us.

  1195. The thing is,

  1196. sexual sin,

  1197. sinful speech,

  1198. this old way

  1199. of measuring

  1200. one another up,

  1201. they detract

  1202. from our unity

  1203. as a church.

  1204. That's why we've got

  1205. to put them away.

  1206. That's why we've got

1207. to put them to death.

  1208. At the beginning

  1209. of the sermon,

  1210. do you remember

  1211. what the old lady

  1212. asked the young man

  1213. wearing grave clothes?

  1214. Why would someone alive

  1215. be wearing the clothes

  1216. of someone dead?

  1217. Christian,

  1218. why would

  1219. someone made new

  1220. in Christ

  1221. continue to wear

  1222. the old grave clothes

  1223. of the old man?

  1224. You've been made new.

  1225. We put those

  1226. old grave clothes

  1227. to death.

  1228. We put them away.

1229. They're not who you are.

  1230. They grieve God.

  1231. They're unloving.

  1232. And when we do,

  1233. we make room

  1234. for the new.

  1235. New ways of relating

  1236. and those made new

  1237. in Christ

  1238. they come

  1239. and they experience

  1240. a new way

  1241. of relating.

  1242. That's who we are.

  1243. This is Christ-centered

  1244. living.

  1245. And next week

  1246. we're going to see

  1247. how,

1248. what we must put on

  1249. in order to live

  1250. out

  1251. being Christ's

  1253. with him

  1254. at the center.

  1255. Let's pray together.

  1256. Lord Jesus,

  1257. thank you so much

  1258. for who you are,

  1259. for what you've done,

  1260. what you're doing,

  1261. what you will do.

  1262. We're so grateful

  1263. that you have

  1264. taken center stage

  1265. in our lives

  1266. individually

  1267. and as a church.

  1268. God,

  1269. would you grow us

  1270. in both

  1271. our personal holiness

  1272. and in our

  1273. corporate holiness

  1274. that you would become

  1275. more and more

  1276. the controlling center,

  1277. the controlling treasure

  1278. of our lives

  1279. together,

  1280. defining us,

  1281. uniting us.

  1282. God,

  1283. we pray that you

  1284. would deliver us

  1285. from grave clothes

1286. so that we can walk

  1287. in newness of life

  1288. together.

  1289. In Jesus' name

  1290. we pray.

  1291. Amen.
