  1. Well, this morning, as you can see by this horse trough, also known as a baptismal, we

  2. have a baptismal service.

  3. We are baptizing three Christian women, three sisters in the Lord, Annalyn Faminas, where

  4. is she?

  5. There she is.

  6. Barb Pierce, where is she?

  7. There she is.

  8. And Sandra Portillo, each has clearly expressed their faith in Jesus Christ.

  9. Each has worked through a Bible study on baptism.

  10. I had the privilege of sitting in an interview with each of them to hear about their clear

  11. profession of faith, their eagerness to follow the Lord Jesus in baptism.

  12. And so we have those steps just to make sure these people are genuinely converted to Christ.

  13. But I'm aware that there are people in the room who may not know what baptism is or what

  14. it means.

  15. So this morning, here's what I'd like you to do.

  16. I'd like to immerse you in what the Bible teaches about baptism.

  17. I'd like to submerge you into God's thoughts on baptism.

  18. I'd like to dunk you into four truths of what the Bible has to say about baptism.

  19. And in so doing, I think it will help explain why these three women are being baptized today

  20. and why, if you're a Christian and have yet to be baptized, why you should be baptized too.

  21. So we're going to look at four biblical truths about baptism.

  22. The precedent of baptism, the command to be baptized, the symbol of baptism, and the PSA of baptism.

  23. So the precedent of baptism.

  24. In Matthew chapter 3, verses 13 through 17, we see the ultimate precedent in terms of baptism.

    Matthew 3:13–17

  25. Jesus himself was baptized.

  26. What we're going to see throughout the New Testament is a normative pattern of being baptized,

  27. and it starts with Jesus.

  28. And so if you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 3, if you have a pew Bible in front of you,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  29. it's on page 961.

  30. And Jesus has gone to the Jordan River, and he's gone to who we call JTB, John the Baptist.

  31. And he's asked John the Baptist to baptize him.

  32. John the Baptist is a bit reluctant, and then Jesus finally convinced him.

  33. In verse 15, he says,

  34. Let it be so, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.

  35. So let's just be clear about something.

  36. John the Baptist was baptizing with what's called a baptism of repentance,

  37. of turning from your sin and turning to God.

  38. Jesus did not need a baptism of repentance, because he was without sin.

  39. And so what Jesus is doing here is he's modeling something for us.

  40. John the Baptist, he says,

  41. Okay.

  42. And then Jesus is baptized.

  43. He goes down into the Jordan, and John the Baptist pulls him up out of the Jordan,

  44. and when he comes up out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends upon him as a dove.

  45. And the Father, in a loud voice, says this,

  46. This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.

  47. Verse 17.

  48. And so what we have here in the baptism of Jesus

  49. is the beginning of a precedent for Christians.

  50. Jesus is the ultimate example.

  51. Did you guys notice?

  52. The baptism of Jesus is a triune event.

  53. You have the Son being baptized.

  54. You have the Spirit descending upon him.

  55. And you have the Father saying,

  56. This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.

  57. It's beautiful.

  58. It pleases God.

  59. Jesus himself was baptized.

  60. And so these three women today are going to follow Jesus in baptism.

  61. They're going to be baptized as their Savior and Lord was baptized.

  62. But there's another precedent from the book of Acts.

  63. If you're not familiar with the book of Acts, A-C-T-S,

  64. it's a New Testament,

  65. and it is the authorized history of the early church,

  66. the start of the early church,

  67. and the spread of the early church.

  68. And the early church spread as the gospel of Jesus Christ was proclaimed.

  69. All around the Mediterranean basin in that first century,

  70. there were people speaking of Jesus,

  71. of who Jesus was, God in the flesh,

  72. and what he's done.

  73. He's died on the cross for sinners.

  74. And as the gospel of Jesus is being proclaimed,

  75. there are people from all different walks of life

  76. who come to believe in this Jesus.

  77. And then they're baptized.

  78. So what we see in the book of Acts is a pattern.

  79. Christ is proclaimed.

  80. People believe.

  81. They repent of their sins and trust in Christ.

  82. And then they're baptized.

  83. Let me show you three examples.

  84. The first example is in Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  85. There's this guy named Philip.

  86. He's called an evangelist,

  87. which means he preaches Christ a lot.

  88. He ends up in a town.

  89. This is Acts 8, 12 through 13.

  90. He's in Samaria.

  91. And a number of men and women believe who are Samaritans,

  92. which was just extraordinary.

  93. And then they were baptized.

  94. So there's the pattern.

  95. There's the precedent.

  96. Very simple.

  97. Christ is proclaimed.

  98. People believe.

  99. And then they're baptized.

  100. They're not baptized and then believe.

  101. They believe and then they're baptized.

  102. Acts 16.

  103. Paul and Silas, well,

  104. they're in chains in a Philippian jail cell.

  105. God sends an earthquake,

  106. throws open the jail cell doors.

  107. It unshackles them.

  108. The Philippian jailer runs out.

  109. He's about to kill himself

  110. because he's thinking,

  111. all of my prisoners have now escaped.

  112. And Paul says,

  113. don't harm yourself.

  114. Do you remember what the Philippian jailer said?

  115. He said,

  116. what must I do to be saved?

  117. And then Paul and Silas explain to him,

  118. believe in the Lord Jesus Christ

  119. and you will be saved.

  120. Paul and Silas goes to the jailer's home,

  121. share that same gospel with the jailer

  122. and his household,

  123. and all of the household believes

  124. in what Paul and Silas are proclaiming

  125. about Jesus,

  126. that he's Lord.

  127. So there it is again.

  128. You have Christ proclaimed

  129. and you have people believe

  130. and then the whole household

  131. was baptized all at once,

  132. the scriptures say.

  133. So you see the pattern.

  134. Christ proclaimed,

  135. people believe,

  136. and then they're baptized.

  137. There's another example.

  138. And it's the example from Acts 18.

  139. Paul and Silas are now in Corinth.

  140. And in verse 8,

  141. they are testifying

  142. that the Christ was Jesus,

  143. that the Messiah

  144. that the Jews have been waiting for

  145. is Jesus.

  146. And there's a man named Crispus

  147. who is the synagogue ruler

  148. in Corinth.

  149. Well, he comes to believe

  150. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  151. the Lord,

  152. the Christ.

  153. And Crispus,

  154. with many other Corinthians,

  155. believe

  156. and they were baptized.

  157. So Christ is proclaimed,

  158. a number of people believe,

  159. and then they're baptized.

  160. So what we have

  161. in the New Testament

  162. is a precedent.

  163. The book of Acts shows us

  164. a normative pattern,

  165. Christ proclaimed,

  166. people believe,

  167. and then they're baptized.

  168. baptized.

  169. So if I can just take a step back,

  170. now what we've looked at

  171. is this.

  172. Jesus is the ultimate example

  173. of baptism.

  174. He himself was baptized.

  175. And then we see this

  176. as the gospel goes out,

  177. people believe,

  178. and then they too

  179. are baptized.

  180. And might I add just this?

  181. In Acts 8,

  182. where Paul

  183. is baptizing,

  184. or Philip is preaching

  185. and baptizing in Samaria,

  186. later,

  187. that same account,

  188. Philip preaches the gospel

  189. to this Ethiopian eunuch.

  190. And the Ethiopian eunuch,

  191. having believed,

  192. points to some water

  193. and says,

  194. hey,

  195. baptize me.

  196. And he went into the water

  197. and came out.

  198. Both in Jesus' example

  199. and in the Ethiopian eunuch's example,

  200. it's a baptism of immersion.

  201. Going all the way under the water

  202. and coming back out.

  203. And the significance

  204. we'll get to in a second.

  205. But what I just want you to show,

  206. it's biblically precedented.

  207. Now moving from the precedent

  208. of baptism,

  209. I want to point you to

  210. the command to be baptized.

  211. This is point two.

  212. And if you turn in your Bibles

  213. to Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  214. in verses 18 through 20,

  215. here's what's going on.

  216. If you've never heard

  217. of the word gospel before,

  218. when it comes to

  219. the books of the Bible,

  220. a gospel,

  221. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

  222. it's a biography of Jesus.

  223. It's kind of the historical account

  224. of his birth,

  225. life,

  226. death,

  227. and resurrection.

  228. And by the time we get to

  229. Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  230. Jesus has been raised from the dead.

  231. And now he is appearing

  232. to his disciples.

  233. And in Matthew 28,

  234. 18 through 20,

  235. he's back in Galilee

  236. where his ministry started.

  237. He says this to his disciples.

  238. He says in verse 18,

  239. all authority in heaven and earth

  240. has been given to me.

  241. And that's Jesus making a huge claim

  242. that he's like,

  243. I am the king of heaven and earth.

  244. I'm lord of it all.

  245. This is the risen Christ

  246. making that claim.

  247. And then he goes on to say,

  248. go therefore and make disciples

  249. of all nations.

  250. So he's commanding,

  251. commissioning his disciples

  252. to go make more disciples

  253. of Jesus

  254. that they would hear Christ

  255. proclaimed and believe.

  256. And having believed,

  257. they would need to be baptized.

  258. Baptizing them

  259. in the name of the Father

  260. and the Son

  261. and the Holy Spirit.

  262. Again,

  263. it's another Trinitarian moment.

  264. One name,

  265. three persons.

  266. They're to teach them

  267. to observe all that Jesus commands

  268. because he's the king.

  269. He's Aslan on the move.

  270. And so what I just want

  271. to help you see here

  272. at the end of the Gospel of Matthew

  273. is that the risen King Jesus

  274. requiring baptism

  275. of all who become his disciples,

  276. of all who hear the Gospel of Jesus

  277. and believe in Jesus,

  278. they are then to be baptized

  279. in the name of Jesus.

  280. It's a way of going public

  281. for Jesus.

  282. Now I need to make

  283. a quick clarification here.

  284. Baptism is a command.

  285. But it's not a command

  286. that saves you.

  287. In order to be saved,

  288. you need to trust in Jesus.

  289. Jesus saves you.

  290. Baptism doesn't save you.

  291. So,

  292. baptism

  293. is a command,

  294. but it doesn't save you.

  295. No,

  296. those who are saved by Jesus,

  297. they're commanded

  298. to be baptized.

  299. And so these three women

  300. that we're going to see

  301. baptized today,

  302. they've already

  303. believed in Jesus.

  304. And now they're just

  305. following Jesus' command

  306. and taking the step

  307. of baptism

  308. and going public

  309. with their conversion

  310. to Christ.

  311. You might know

  312. Ephesians 2, 8, 9,

  313. for by grace

  314. you've been saved

  315. through faith.

  316. It's not of yourself,

  317. it's a gift of God,

  318. not by works

  319. so that no one

  320. should boast.

  321. Baptism isn't a work

  322. we do to save us.

  323. Baptism,

  324. it's a declaration

  325. of the work

  326. Christ has done

  327. to save us.

  328. In Acts 2,

  329. just to help you

  330. understand this command

  331. of baptism

  332. a little bit more,

  333. the apostle Peter

  334. is preaching

  335. one of the greatest

  336. sermons ever preached

  337. and he's in Jerusalem

  338. and he's preaching

  339. to thousands

  340. of Jewish people

  341. in Jerusalem

  342. and he brings

  343. this sermon to a head.

  344. He's been preaching

  345. Jesus is the Lord

  346. and there are

  347. these thousands

  348. of Jewish people

  349. who then ask

  350. in verse 37,

  351. what do we do?

  352. What do we do now

  353. in light of Jesus

  354. being the Christ?

  355. And Peter says,

  356. repent and be baptized

  357. every one of you.

  358. And that word repent

  359. simply means

  360. to turn from your sins,

  361. from trusting yourself

  362. to save yourself,

  363. and trust in Christ.

  364. It's shorthand

  365. to be converted,

  366. to trust in Jesus,

  367. and then to be baptized.

  368. And in verse 41,

  369. we see that those

  370. who received his word,

  371. those who believed

  372. what he proclaimed

  373. about Jesus,

  374. they are then baptized.

  375. Peter doesn't make

  376. baptism optional.

  377. It's a necessary step

  378. for those who believe

  379. in Jesus

  380. as their Savior and Lord.

  381. It's a command.

  382. It doesn't save you,

  383. but it's a command.

  384. So here's what that means.

  385. For us as a church,

  386. it means this.

  387. We must be baptizing

  388. those men and women,

  389. boys and girls,

  390. who become Christians,

  391. who believe.

  392. We are to baptize them.

  393. That's why we're having

  394. a baptism,

  395. to baptize those

  396. who believe in Jesus.

  397. But it also means this,

  398. that those who come

  399. to faith in Christ,

  400. who repent of their sin

  401. and turn to Christ,

  402. you need to be baptized.

  403. This command applies

  404. to you.

  405. You need to take this step

  406. to go public with Jesus.

  407. It's a command.

  408. It doesn't save you,

  409. but it's a way

  410. that we obey

  411. and follow Jesus.

  412. Now you might be

  413. asking this question,

  414. baptism, baptism,

  415. baptism,

  416. what's the big deal

  417. with baptism?

  418. Well, it's what it represents.

  419. It's what it symbolizes,

  420. which brings me

  421. to the third point,

  422. third biblical truth,

  423. the symbol of baptism.

  424. And I want to bring you

  425. to Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6:1–5

  426. verses 1 through 5,

  427. and I'm going to read

  428. that for us.

  429. What shall we say then?

  430. Are we to continue in sin

  431. that grace may abound?

  432. By no means.

  433. How can we who died to sin

  434. still live in it?

  435. Do you not know

  436. that all of us

  437. who have been baptized

  438. into Christ Jesus

  439. were baptized into his death?

  440. Did you hear

  441. the baptism language?

  442. Do you not know

  443. that all of us

  444. who have been baptized

  445. into Christ Jesus

  446. were baptized into his death?

  447. We were buried, therefore,

  448. with him by baptism

  449. into death

  450. in order that

  451. just as Christ

  452. was raised from the dead

  453. by the glory of the Father,

  454. we too might walk

  455. in newness of life.

  456. The Apostle Paul

  457. is using baptism

  458. as a way of

  459. kind of

  460. a visible demonstration

  461. of our invisible union

  462. with Christ.

  463. He's talking about

  464. using baptism

  465. in a way of,

  466. hey, your baptism

  467. actually

  468. is the visible

  469. kind of seeing

  470. of something

  471. that God has done

  472. within you.

  473. It's called

  474. being united to Christ.

  475. I've been preaching

  476. on Sunday mornings

  477. through the book

  478. of Colossians,

  479. and I've been loving

  480. every minute of it.

  481. And you can sum up

  482. the point

  483. of the whole book

  484. of Colossians

  485. in two words.

  486. Christ central.

  487. Jesus Christ

  488. is the controlling center

  489. of our lives

  490. as Christians.

  491. He's the treasured center

  492. of our lives

  493. as Christians.

  494. He's the life-giving center

  495. of our lives

  496. as Christians.

  497. He is the glorious center

  498. of our lives.

  499. As Christians,

  500. our lives orbit him.

  501. He doesn't orbit us.

  502. When a sinner,

  503. a person who's been sinning

  504. their whole life,

  505. believes in Jesus Christ

  506. for the first time,

  507. at that moment,

  508. they've been converted.

  509. The Bible talks about it

  510. as being made new,

  511. as becoming a new creation.

  512. From Colossians,

  513. we've learned

  514. that when someone believes,

  515. they are delivered

  516. from the domain of darkness

  517. and transferred

  518. into the kingdom

  519. of the beloved son.

  520. They have a new kingdom.

  521. They have a new king,

  522. Jesus.

  523. And we've been learning

  524. from Colossians as well,

  525. as we see here

  526. in Romans 6,

  527. 1 through 5,

  528. they're given a new identity

  529. in Christ.

  530. That they're united

  531. to Christ

  532. in his death

  533. and resurrection.

  534. Remember in Colossians 2,

  535. that we die with Christ

  536. and in 3, 1,

  537. that we are raised

  538. with Christ.

  539. This union with Christ

  540. is absolutely phenomenal.

  541. It makes you

  542. a whole new creation.

  543. And so here's what that means.

  544. When someone believes

  545. in Jesus for the first time,

  546. God unites them

  547. to Christ's death.

  548. And so therefore,

  549. that sinner's sin

  550. is completely forgiven

  551. and sin is no longer

  552. their master.

  553. And they're also raised

  554. with Christ.

  555. And so now,

  556. they're given new life

  557. so that they can live

  558. for God.

  559. You've been united

  560. with Christ

  561. in his death

  562. and resurrection.

  563. And that's why

  564. this is so important.

  565. You might see

  566. a horse trough.

  567. What you need

  568. to be seeing

  569. is a symbol

  570. of Jesus' death.

  571. So Anna Lynn's

  572. going to be the first

  573. to be baptized.

  574. And so she's going

  575. to come up here.

  576. I'm going to introduce

  577. you to her.

  578. And then Eric and I

  579. are going to put her

  580. in the water.

  581. And you're going to hear

  582. me say to her

  583. as she's going down

  584. into the water,

  585. united with Christ

  586. in his death.

  587. And that'll hold her

  588. for three minutes.

  589. We'll sing a song.

  590. Just to make the point.

  591. And then we'll

  592. pull her out

  593. of the water

  594. and you'll hear me say,

  595. and raised with Christ

  596. to newness of life.

  597. So here's what

  598. the water represents,

  599. the death of Jesus.

  600. United with Christ

  601. in his death,

  602. raised with Christ

  603. to newness of life.

  604. So you know what

  605. this baptism symbolizes.

  606. An individual's union

  607. with Christ.

  608. It's a statement

  609. about their conversion.

  610. All three of these women

  611. are saying this

  612. this morning.

  613. I've come to believe

  614. who Jesus is.

  615. I have been united

  616. with Christ

  617. in his death

  618. and resurrection.

  619. I am a new creation.

  620. Three times this morning.

  621. It's a huge statement.

  622. I've been saved

  623. from my sins

  624. because I've been

  625. united to Christ.

  626. That's the big deal

  627. about baptism.

  628. It's what it signifies.

  629. It's an outward expression

  630. of an inward change

  631. that has been brought about

  632. by God himself

  633. in each of these women's lives.

  634. And that's what

  635. they're announcing.

  636. Which brings me

  637. to the fourth point.

  638. The PSA of baptism.

  639. It's the fourth

  640. biblical truth.

  641. You know what a PSA is,

  642. don't you?

  643. Public service announcement.

  644. Years ago

  645. when people actually

  646. watched the Tennecock news

  647. on TV,

  648. there was a

  649. Milwaukee TV station,

  650. a news station

  651. that would make this

  652. PSA at 10 p.m.

  653. It's 10 p.m., parents.

  654. Do you know

  655. where your children are at?

  656. It is just kind of

  657. raising awareness,

  658. making something known.

  659. That's the point

  660. of a public service announcement.

  661. baptism is a biblical

  662. public service announcement.

  663. Let me ground it

  664. not just in its

  665. precedent and command

  666. and its symbolism,

  667. but let me just ground it

  668. in Matthew 10

  669. as an outworking of this.

  670. Listen to what Jesus says.

  671. Jesus is talking

  672. to his apostles

  673. about not fearing

  674. man,

  675. not being afraid

  676. of what other people

  677. think about you.

  678. And he says this,

  679. fear not,

  680. therefore,

  681. you are of more value

  682. than many sparrows.

  683. In verse 32 he says,

  684. so everyone

  685. who acknowledges me

  686. before men,

  687. I also will acknowledge

  688. before my Father

  689. who is in heaven,

  690. but whoever denies me

  691. before men,

  692. I will deny

  693. before my Father

  694. who is in heaven.

  695. And at a minimum,

  696. Jesus is saying

  697. something quite extraordinary.

  698. He's making it very clear

  699. that those who follow him

  700. are not to be ashamed

  701. of him,

  702. but must be willing

  703. to go public for him,

  704. to publicly identify

  705. with him.

  706. And what baptism is,

  707. is a beautiful,

  708. commanded way

  709. to go public

  710. for Jesus,

  711. to acknowledge Jesus

  712. before men.

  713. So when each of these women

  714. are baptized,

  715. do you know

  716. what they're saying?

  717. What Jesus thinks

  718. matters more

  719. than what anybody

  720. in the room thinks.

  721. That's what they're saying.

  722. They're saying,

  723. Jesus is my treasure.

  724. And they're going

  725. public for him.

  726. They're acknowledging him

  727. before this company

  728. of men and women.

  729. Now you can ask the question,

  730. well, who then

  731. is a PSA for?

  732. This thing called baptism.

  733. Well, for sure,

  734. it's for these three sisters

  735. being baptized.

  736. It's for them.

  737. It's for them to go public.

  738. For them to make

  739. an announcement

  740. by way of their

  741. baptism that they

  742. belong to Jesus.

  743. And it's not something

  744. they're going to forget

  745. anytime soon.

  746. But it's also

  747. for everyone in the room,

  748. this public service

  749. announcement.

  750. If you're not a Christian

  751. in the room,

  752. when you see these

  753. three women baptized,

  754. there could be a two-fold

  755. kind of effect.

  756. First one is this.

  757. It's a delineation.

  758. You're thinking,

  759. oh, Sandra,

  760. oh, she's now

  761. a Jesus person.

  762. And she's one of them.

  763. She's no longer

  764. one of us.

  765. She's one of them.

  766. That's what baptism does.

  767. It's a delineation.

  768. It helps people

  769. understand that

  770. this person being

  771. baptized,

  772. it's a PSA.

  773. Hey, I am living

  774. for Jesus now.

  775. So a non-Christian

  776. hears that and like,

  777. okay, sounds good.

  778. The second effect

  779. is this.

  780. When a non-Christian

  781. sees someone baptized,

  782. to be asking this question,

  783. and if you're a non-Christian

  784. in the room,

  785. I hope you're asking

  786. this question when you see

  787. these three women baptized.

  788. Why would someone

  789. ever do something like that?

  790. What is it about this Jesus

  791. that would cause

  792. these women

  793. to take that step?

  794. And it's got everything

  795. to do with who Jesus is

  796. and what he's done.

  797. And so if you're

  798. a non-Christian in the room,

  799. be asking the question,

  800. why would they do this?

  801. Who is this Jesus?

  802. There's another group

  803. of people in the room,

  804. the Christians in the room.

  805. This PSA is for you.

  806. And again,

  807. it's a delineating effect.

  808. It's when you see

  809. Anna Lynn or Barb

  810. or Sandra

  811. going into the water

  812. and coming out,

  813. you're like,

  814. oh,

  815. they're no longer

  816. one of them.

  817. They're one of us.

  818. They live for Jesus now.

  819. And so we get

  820. to be able

  821. to recognize

  822. that these three women

  823. have been brought

  824. into the kingdom of God,

  825. part of the family of faith.

  826. That's why we're having

  827. cake downstairs afterwards.

  828. We're celebrating

  829. their step of obedience.

  830. But it also has this effect.

  831. Last two sermons,

  832. I've been talking about

  833. this thing called

  834. Christocentric resonance.

  835. Here's the illustration

  836. I've been using.

  837. Imagine on the stage,

  838. two baby grand pianos,

  839. each just perfectly tuned.

  840. Someone comes up

  841. and hits center C

  842. on one baby grand.

  843. Ding,

  844. ding,

  845. ding,

  846. ding,

  847. ding.

  848. Do you know

  849. what's going to happen

  850. in the other?

  851. Center C will hum

  852. because it's on

  853. the same frequency.

  854. And so here's going

  855. to be some

  856. Christocentric resonance,

  857. brothers and sisters.

  858. When these three women

  859. go in and are baptized,

  860. it's like they're hitting

  861. Christ central

  862. in the room.

  863. Jesus is everything to them.

  864. And let that resonate

  865. in your being.

  866. And let what comes up

  867. be thankfulness to God.

  868. A yes and amen.

  869. So it's very appropriate

  870. for one,

  871. each of these women

  872. are going to go down

  873. and come up

  874. to say glory to God.

  875. Yes and amen.

  876. All praise to his name.

  877. It's the edifying effect

  878. of a baptism,

  879. of a PSA

  880. among God's people.

  881. So this baptism,

  882. well,

  883. it's a biblical PSA.

  884. It's like

  885. each of these people

  886. are saying,

  887. hey,

  888. it's 11 a.m.

  889. Sunday morning.

  890. do you know

  891. who my Savior

  892. and Lord is?

  893. Jesus.

  894. What is baptism?

  895. Well,

  896. it's a biblical precedent.

  897. We've seen that.

  898. Jesus is the greatest example.

  899. We've seen it

  900. throughout Acts.

  901. Christ proclaimed,

  902. people believe,

  903. then are baptized.

  904. It's a biblical command.

  905. Jesus himself

  906. commands it

  907. by virtue of saying,

  908. go baptize

  909. those

  910. whom you are

  911. making disciples.

  912. it's a biblical picture

  913. of our union

  914. with Christ.

  915. It is beautiful.

  916. And it's a biblical

  917. public service announcement

  918. that these three women

  919. are saying,

  920. hey,

  921. I'm going to acknowledge

  922. my Jesus

  923. before this company

  924. of men.

  925. So if you're a Christian,

  926. a non-Christian

  927. in the room,

  928. a non-Christian

  929. in the room,

  930. let me ask you

  931. just very,

  932. very lovingly

  933. but clearly,

  934. what do you need

  935. to know

  936. in order to become

  937. a follower

  938. of Jesus yourself?

  939. What do you need

  940. to know

  941. in order to turn

  942. from your sin

  943. and turn to Christ?

  944. What else do you need

  945. to know?

  946. What is keeping you

  947. from becoming

  948. a follower

  949. of Jesus today?

  950. I'd be happy

  951. to talk to you

  952. about that

  953. after the service.

  954. If you're a parent

  955. of children

  956. who are expressing

  957. interest

  958. in baptism,

  959. this is the second

  960. group of people,

  961. if your kids

  962. are expressing

  963. interest in baptism,

  964. I would encourage you

  965. as your pastor

  966. to err on the side

  967. of waiting.

  968. Here's why.

  969. So that your children

  970. fully understand

  971. what baptism means.

  972. They're going to be

  973. eager.

  974. They want to please.

  975. We've got a lot

  976. of compliant kids

  977. that want to just do it

  978. because they know

  979. it's good.

  980. But you want to be sure

  981. as their parents

  982. that they understand

  983. why.

  984. So here's what

  985. you're listening for.

  986. I would say

  987. this is what you're

  988. listening for

  989. for both baptism

  990. and the Lord's Supper.

  991. It's listening

  992. for your child's

  993. understanding

  994. of their own

  995. sinfulness.

  996. Does your child

  997. know

  998. that when they

  999. do wrong,

  1000. it's ultimately

  1001. against God.

  1002. It's a Godward

  1003. repentance.

  1004. It's a Godward

  1005. grief.

  1006. And I would

  1007. encourage you

  1008. to wait

  1009. until you're

  1010. hearing that

  1011. in your child.

  1012. That they

  1013. understand more

  1014. and more

  1015. that their sin

  1016. not only hurts

  1017. other people,

  1018. but it grieves

  1019. the God

  1020. who created them.

  1021. that will

  1022. help them

  1023. understand

  1024. both the

  1025. significance

  1026. of the

  1027. Lord's Supper

  1028. and baptism.

  1029. Third group

  1030. of people.

  1031. If you're a

  1032. Christian in the

  1033. room and you

  1034. have not been

  1035. baptized yet,

  1036. here's what you

  1037. need to put on

  1038. your calendar.

  1039. Sunday,

  1040. August 11th.

  1041. It's our

  1042. church picnic.

  1043. We're down

  1044. at Eichelman

  1045. and we use

  1046. this really

  1047. cool baptismal

  1048. called Lake

  1049. Michigan.

  1050. And when I

  1051. say really

  1052. cool,

  1053. I'm literally

  1054. like really

  1055. cool.

  1056. But you want

  1057. to get that

  1058. on your

  1059. calendar.

  1060. In that

  1061. vestibule on

  1062. the Connect

  1063. desk,

  1064. there are

  1065. Bible studies

  1066. on baptism.

  1067. If you want

  1068. to be baptized

  1069. on the 11th,

  1070. grab one of

  1071. those.

  1072. And then you're

  1073. going to want

  1074. to get a hold

  1075. of Kelly Schneeberger.

  1076. Kelly, are you

  1077. in the room?

  1078. Here she is

  1079. down front.

  1080. She's the

  1081. coordinator.

  1082. So if you want

  1083. to be baptized,

  1084. you're going to

  1085. want to talk

  1086. to her and

  1087. she'll set up

  1088. a time we

  1089. get together

  1090. and then make

  1091. sure you're

  1092. ready to be

  1093. baptized.

  1094. So if you're

  1095. not a Christian

  1096. and you want

  1097. to be baptized,

  1098. Sunday,

  1099. August 11th,

  1100. which now

  1101. brings me to

  1102. the fourth

  1103. group of

  1104. people,

  1105. Anna Lynn,

  1106. Barb,

  1107. and Sandra,

  1108. let's apply

  1109. this biblical

  1110. teaching on

  1111. baptism.

  1112. Let me pray

  1113. and then we'll

  1114. have Anna Lynn

  1115. come up.

  1116. God, we're so

  1117. thankful for what

  1118. your word has to

  1119. say about

  1120. baptism.

  1121. You don't

  1122. leave us

  1123. guessing.

  1124. It's very

  1125. clear.

  1126. And God, we want

  1127. to thank you for

  1128. what you've begun

  1129. in these three

  1130. women.

  1131. And thank you for

  1132. this step that

  1133. they're taking in

  1134. terms of going

  1135. public with their

  1136. union with Christ,

  1137. their conversion.

  1138. God, would you

  1139. impress this upon

  1140. their memories for

  1141. the rest of their

  1142. days?

  1143. Would you help

  1144. them use this to

  1145. communicate your

  1146. goodness to them?

  1147. And God, would you

  1148. bring about a

  1149. Christocentric

  1150. resonance in the

  1151. room?

  1152. Pray this in Jesus'

  1153. name.

  1154. Amen.

  1155. Amen.

  1156. Amen.

  1157. Amen.
