  1. You may be seated, kids, you now may be excused to your King's Kids class, and if you would,

  2. please open up your Bibles to Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  3. I'm going to read 3.22 through 4.1.

  4. We've come to the end of this section in Colossians that's called kind of the household code or

  5. the household rules, and we've seen Paul time and again instructing on these sets of relationships,

  6. wives and husbands, children and parents, and now bond slaves and their masters.

  7. Hear God's Word.

  8. Bond servants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye service

  9. as people pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

  10. Lord, whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and not for men.

  11. Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward, you are serving

  12. the Lord Christ.

  13. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

  14. Masters, treat your bond servants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a master

  15. in heaven.

  16. May God bless the reading of his Word.

  17. Name that tune.

  18. Name that movie.

  19. Snow White.

  20. Hi-ho!

  21. Hi-ho!

  22. It's?

  23. Name that movie.

  24. Snow White, 1937 Disney classic.

  25. We got a bunch of happy dwarves going to work.

  26. And then later on, in the same movie, we have an interesting situation with Snow White.

  27. She's confronted with this cluttered house.

  28. Oh, no, what is she going to do?

  29. She needs to clean it up.

  30. How is she going to clean it up?

  31. She's going to whistle while she works.

  32. Whistle while you work.

  33. And she enlists these creatures from the forest to help her clean her house.

  34. Could you imagine Snow White working for you?

  35. That would be great.

  36. Man, she would make a great employee, wouldn't she?

  37. But brothers and sisters, here I am right now to tell you we can do far better than whistle

  38. while we work.

  39. Because Jesus is the controlling center of our lives.

  40. We worship while we work.

  41. Christian, who do you work for?

  42. You work for Jesus.

  43. We work for Jesus.

  44. Now, if you are a Christian, also known as a saint, a holy one.

  45. If you're a saint, you know what?

  46. You're going to have to work like the majority of the 8.1 billion people on the planet.

  47. We've got to work.

  48. We've got to work to make a living.

  49. God has given us good things.

  50. If you want a 30-second theology of work, here it is.

  51. God created work.

  52. It is good.

  53. Sin distorts work.

  54. Now it can be a toil.

  55. But Christ redeems our work so that now we can take joy in working for Him.

  56. And then at the final consummation, when we're all in glory together,

  57. we get to work some more for the glory of His name.

  58. Brothers and sisters, we don't get a pass when it comes to work.

  59. Rather, we are to work a certain way and for a certain who.

  60. We are to work for Jesus.

  61. So if you're a subordinate worker in the room,

  62. or if you're a supervisor in the room at work,

  63. we are to work for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  64. Christ, we can do far better than whistle while you work.

  65. We get to worship while you work.

  66. This section that we're in right now,

  67. Paul has addressed wives and husbands.

  68. With Christ as their controlling centers,

  69. wives are to submit to their husbands.

  70. Husbands are to lead their wives.

  71. And it's to be good.

  72. Children are to obey their parents.

  73. Parents, dads, you are to lead your children.

  74. Children are to lead their children.

  75. And it is good.

  76. And here we are talking about bond servants and masters.

  77. Does anybody have slaves in the house?

  78. No.

  79. Does anybody feel enslaved?

  80. Well, don't answer that one.

  81. Don't want you to answer that one.

  82. Now, if you're interested in the New Testament,

  83. when it talks about slavery,

  84. what is meant by slavery,

  85. and how that differs from the chattel slavery of Africans in our country,

  86. that's a blight on our history.

  87. If you want to know the difference between that.

  88. Or you're wondering as you're reading through this,

  89. why doesn't Paul just tell these masters to let their slaves free?

  90. I want you to grab this article.

  91. Does the New Testament support slavery?

  92. It is on the Connect desk in the vestibule on your way out.

  93. But here's how I'm going to proceed this morning.

  94. Given that this particular relationship is having to do with work,

  95. I'm going to move forward applying this passage

  96. to those who are in a subordinate role of work

  97. and those who are in a supervising role at work.

  98. And I think we're going to capture the intent of what God is saying.

  99. Brothers and sisters,

  100. whether you're a subordinate or a supervisor,

  101. you work for the Lord Jesus.

  102. And so here is how we're going to proceed.

  103. Brothers and sisters,

  104. you need a reminder.

  105. We are saints who work.

  106. And then I want to help you think,

  107. how does a saint who is a subordinate work?

  108. That's two.

  109. And then number three is,

  110. how does a saint who is a supervisor work?

  111. Whether you're a subordinate or a supervisor,

  112. if Christ is the controlling center of your life,

  113. you are a saint and you work for Jesus,

  114. changes the way you work.

  115. We are saints who work.

  116. You've probably noticed I've been using the word saint a lot.

  117. If you flip back in Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:2

  118. verse 2,

  119. Paul is writing these Christians in Colossae,

  120. this church,

  121. and he says in verse 2,

  122. to the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae.

  123. Saint is just a word that means holy one.

  124. And if you look at 312,

  125. do you remember when I preached this weeks ago?

  126. We are told,

  127. put on then as God's chosen ones,

  128. holy and beloved,

  129. beloved saints chosen by God's grace.

  130. Do you know who's going to work tomorrow?

  131. Raise your hand.

  132. Man, you walk into work.

  133. Do you know who's walking into work?

  134. A saint of the living God.

  135. A beloved saint.

  136. There are such a variety of occupations represented in this room.

  137. And every one of us who've been flipped by the grace of God,

  138. we enter our workplaces as holy ones,

  139. as saints.

  140. So let me just kind of unpack that for you,

  141. just to convince you,

  142. remind you of who you are.

  143. Remember chapter 1, verse 13,

  144. we have been delivered from the domain of darkness

  145. and transferred into the kingdom of the beloved son.

  146. You're a saint because you've got a new king

  147. and a new kingdom.

  148. And Jesus has become the controlling center of your life.

  149. He's no ordinary king.

  150. In 115, he is the firstborn of creation.

  151. The king of creation.

  152. And in 118, he is the firstborn from the dead.

  153. He's the king of the new creation.

  154. Do you know what kind of kingdom we're a part of?

  155. We're part of a new creation kingdom.

  156. And you're a new creation in that kingdom, brother, sister.

  157. You're a saint.

  158. You got flipped by Jesus.

  159. You've been repoed by Jesus Christ.

  160. And you've also been given a new ID,

  161. a new identification.

  162. It's a holy ID.

  163. In 2.20, we read this.

  164. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world.

  165. And then 3.1, we read, if you've been raised with Christ.

  166. If you've died with Christ, if you've been raised with Christ,

  167. means you've been united with Christ in his death and resurrection.

  168. You're a new creation.

  169. The old is gone.

  170. The new has come.

  171. Changes everything.

  172. We're talking about your union with Christ.

  173. And because you've been united with Christ in his death and resurrection,

  174. you're dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  175. It changes everything.

  176. You're a saint who's walking into your workplace tomorrow, brother, sister.

  177. We're not done.

  178. It changes your aim.

  179. 3.1, we're to seek the things that are above,

  180. where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

  181. Jesus is reigning on high over all things.

  182. Ephesians 1.22 says,

  183. all things have been put under his feet.

  184. So when you go into your workplace and you're thinking,

  185. everything's a mess here,

  186. Jesus is reigning over it all.

  187. Even your CEO.

  188. All things are under his feet.

  189. And we work for him.

  190. He is our greatest aim.

  191. He's the one in whom we're looking to please above all else.

  192. And we're on a new time frame.

  193. Church, what time is it?

  194. It's Christ time.

  195. We live in between the first coming and the second coming of Jesus.

  196. And when he comes back, he's going to judge it all, even you.

  197. So you know what that means?

  198. You walk into work,

  199. and you might think I'm on company time,

  200. and you are on company time,

  201. but you're also on Christ time.

  202. And it matters to him.

  203. Your aim is Christ,

  204. and you will one day give an account for your work life.

  205. We're on Christ time.

  206. We live in light of the eternity

  207. that Christ has rescued us for in our daily working.

  208. But you also have new work wear.

  209. We have new wardrobe.

  210. Before you put on your work outfit tomorrow morning,

  211. you've got to put on your Christ wear.

  212. You've got to put off the grave clothes of the old self

  213. that used to live under the dominion of darkness.

  214. And you're to put on as chosen,

  215. God's chosen, holy, and beloved,

  216. things like compassionate hearts,

  217. meekness, kindness, humility,

  218. patience.

  219. You put that on first,

  220. and then you put your work outfit on over that.

  221. So you walk into your workplace tomorrow,

  222. and you've got Christ wear on

  223. underneath your business attire.

  224. It's Christ likeness

  225. that we're aiming at,

  226. that we're living for.

  227. Hey, who's walking into the workplace tomorrow?

  228. A saint!

  229. I went to high school outside of Chicago,

  230. and I grew up in a suburb called St. Charles,

  231. and our mascot, well, they were the fighting saints.

  232. And on our football team,

  233. I don't think there were any kind of biblical saints.

  234. But do you know what our school song was?

  235. Oh, when the saints come marching in,

  236. oh, when the saints come marching in,

  237. tomorrow morning,

  238. when you walk into your workplace,

  239. you can be singing this song.

  240. Oh, when this saint

  241. comes walking in

  242. to this workplace,

  243. oh, when this saint comes walking in,

  244. I'm going to work

  245. for King Jesus.

  246. Oh, when this saint comes walking in,

  247. do you know who's walking into work tomorrow, brother?

  248. A holy one of God.

  249. That's who you are.

  250. Don't forget it.

  251. Remember who you are.

  252. You've got a new kingdom,

  253. a new ID,

  254. a new aim,

  255. a new time frame.

  256. You've got a new wardrobe,

  257. and that's who's walking in

  258. because Jesus is the controlling center

  259. of your life.

  260. When you go to work tomorrow,

  261. you can worship him

  262. while you work.

  263. That's who you are.

  264. We are saints who work.

  265. It's the intersection of two kingdoms

  266. in the workplace.

  267. Now, if you are a saint

  268. and you're a subordinate,

  269. point two,

  270. how do you go about your work

  271. as a subordinate for Jesus?

  272. And we see this in chapter 3,

  273. verses 22 through 25.

  274. Now, remember,

  275. Paul is originally addressing bond slaves,

  276. and I'm going to apply

  277. what Paul instructs here

  278. to work subordinates,

  279. and you are a work subordinate

  280. if you report to someone above you.

  281. If someone has a responsibility

  282. and authority over you

  283. in terms of your work performance,

  284. then you are a subordinate.

  285. You might be a supervisor too,

  286. but you are a subordinate.

  287. In this passage,

  288. in 322 through 25,

  289. when Paul addresses subordinates,

  290. we see a what,

  291. a how,

  292. and a why.

  293. The what.

  294. Verse 22,

  295. we read this.

  296. Bond servants,

  297. obey in everything

  298. those who are your earthly masters.

  299. The what is obey.

  300. If you are work subordinate,

  301. you are to obey

  302. your work supervisor.

  303. It's the same word used

  304. earlier in verse 20

  305. when talking about children,

  306. obey your parents.

  307. It's the same word.

  308. It's the same exhortation.

  309. Obey.

  310. Obey in everything

  311. your earthly masters,

  312. your earthly supervisors.

  313. Obey in everything.

  314. It's like God is addressing you,

  315. brother, sister,

  316. in a subordinate role.

  317. He's addressing you

  318. and saying,

  319. here's how I want you

  320. to live for me

  321. in your workplace.

  322. I want you to be known

  323. for your obedience

  324. to your supervisors.

  325. I want you to be known for that.

  326. Now, when you read the words

  327. in everything,

  328. maybe you start getting

  329. a little nervous.

  330. Well, there's two qualifications

  331. with this.

  332. If you're a subordinate,

  333. you are to obey

  334. your supervisor

  335. in everything

  336. with two qualifications.

  337. First one is this.

  338. You are to obey them

  339. in everything

  340. insofar as what they are

  341. requiring of you

  342. pleases the Lord.

  343. So if your supervisor

  344. is asking you to lie,

  345. you need to say,

  346. sorry, boss,

  347. I can't do that

  348. for the glory of Jesus.

  349. If your supervisor

  350. is asking you

  351. to look the other way

  352. because there's something

  353. going on

  354. that he doesn't want to be

  355. or she doesn't want

  356. to be held accountable for,

  357. you can't go along

  358. with that.

  359. If you are being told

  360. to treat someone

  361. in a way that is grievous

  362. in God's sight,

  363. you can't do that.

  364. If you're told

  365. to kind of make

  366. some numbers change,

  367. you can't do that.

  368. because you are working

  369. for Jesus

  370. in your workplace.

  371. And so you are to obey

  372. your boss in everything

  373. insofar as it pleases

  374. the Lord.

  375. Secondly,

  376. you are to obey

  377. your supervisor

  378. in everything

  379. so long as it pertains

  380. to work.

  381. So if your supervisor

  382. is insisting

  383. that you take

  384. her marriage advice,

  385. you don't have to

  386. because she's

  387. out of her lane.

  388. She doesn't have

  389. authority over you

  390. for that.

  391. She doesn't have

  392. responsibility for you

  393. in that.

  394. If your supervisor

  395. is telling you

  396. how to invest

  397. your money,

  398. you can take

  399. that with a grain of salt

  400. but you don't need

  401. to do that.

  402. You don't need

  403. to obey them in that.

  404. They don't have

  405. responsibility for you

  406. in that.

  407. So insofar

  408. as it's pleasing

  409. to the Lord

  410. and it pertains

  411. to work,

  412. you are to obey

  413. your supervisors

  414. and everything

  415. and you are to

  416. obey them

  417. quickly

  418. and you are to

  419. obey them well

  420. and you are to do it

  421. with all of your heart

  422. which brings me

  423. to not just

  424. the what

  425. of obeying

  426. but the how

  427. we are to obey.

  428. And we see this

  429. in verses 22,

  430. all the way

  431. down into 24

  432. but what

  433. the apostle Paul

  434. does here

  435. is he sets up

  436. a really interesting

  437. contrast.

  438. He wants us

  439. to obey

  440. our supervisors

  441. but he goes

  442. in to say

  443. don't obey

  444. them this way,

  445. obey them

  446. this way.

  447. Look at the passage.

  448. On servants

  449. obey in everything

  450. those who are

  451. your earthly masters

  452. not by way

  453. of eye service

  454. as people

  455. pleasers

  456. how not

  457. to obey them.

  458. But here's how

  459. you obey them

  460. but with sincerity

  461. of heart

  462. fearing the Lord

  463. whatever you do

  464. work heartily

  465. as for the Lord

  466. and not for men.

  467. So how are we

  468. to obey

  469. our supervisors?

  470. Well in everything

  471. as to the Lord.

  472. this idea

  473. of eye service

  474. as people pleasers

  475. means you're

  476. more concerned

  477. with what

  478. your earthly

  479. supervisor

  480. thinks

  481. than what

  482. your eternal

  483. king thinks

  484. and that you're

  485. willing

  486. to do

  487. eye service.

  488. It's this

  489. extrinsic

  490. outside

  491. kind of

  492. motivation

  493. that you're

  494. doing something

  495. like for your boss.

  496. Classic example

  497. it's summertime

  498. if there are

  499. people who work

  500. for the

  501. Wisconsin Department

  502. of Transportation

  503. this is nothing

  504. against you

  505. but let's say

  506. you're driving

  507. on the highway

  508. there's a work

  509. crew working

  510. and you're

  511. at a crawl

  512. and you're

  513. watching these

  514. guys lollygagging

  515. you know

  516. talking it up

  517. leaning on

  518. their shovels

  519. and then you

  520. watch their

  521. supervisor

  522. shows up

  523. and then

  524. shovel starts

  525. flying.

  526. That is

  527. eye service

  528. people pleasing.

  529. They start

  530. working because

  531. they see

  532. and want to

  533. impress a

  534. human being

  535. but

  536. contrast

  537. this

  538. eye service

  539. people pleasers

  540. with this

  541. internal

  542. sincerity of

  543. heart

  544. fearing the

  545. Lord.

  546. Whatever you do

  547. work heartily

  548. internally

  549. as for the

  550. Lord.

  551. Not for

  552. men.

  553. This is

  554. intrinsic

  555. motivation.

  556. This is

  557. you work

  558. hard and

  559. you work

  560. well

  561. for

  562. anybody

  563. because

  564. you serve

  565. the Lord

  566. in this.

  567. The best

  568. workers

  569. in town

  570. should be

  571. followers

  572. of Jesus.

  573. Sincerity

  574. of heart.

  575. We do

  576. things with

  577. excellence.

  578. We do

  579. things well

  580. and we

  581. follow through

  582. on it.

  583. We work

  584. hard.

  585. The object

  586. of course

  587. is

  588. Jesus.

  589. We're

  590. working for

  591. Him.

  592. Aimed at

  593. Him.

  594. Now you

  595. tell me

  596. who would

  597. you want

  598. working for

  599. you?

  600. I

  601. service

  602. people

  603. pleaser?

  604. I

  605. work

  606. or

  607. working

  608. heartily for

  609. the Lord.

  610. Come on.

  611. That's the

  612. how.

  613. And now

  614. the why.

  615. In

  616. verses

  617. 24 and

  618. 25,

  619. 24 you

  620. see this

  621. word

  622. knowing?

  623. That's

  624. going to

  625. show up

  626. again in

  627. 4.1 but

  628. that word

  629. knowing is

  630. to tell you

  631. something.

  632. If you're a

  633. subordinate

  634. who is

  635. working in

  636. a place,

  637. you need

  638. to know

  639. something.

  640. And it's

  641. going to

  642. inform,

  643. motivate you

  644. in order to

  645. work heartily

  646. for the

  647. Lord,

  648. not for

  649. men.

  650. And what

  651. is it?

  652. Knowing that

  653. from the

  654. Lord you

  655. will receive

  656. the inheritance

  657. as a reward.

  658. You are

  659. serving the

  660. Lord Christ.

  661. If you

  662. are a

  663. saint who's

  664. working as

  665. a subordinate,

  666. you must

  667. know that

  668. your reward

  669. is coming

  670. from the

  671. Lord Jesus.

  672. your bonus

  673. is not

  674. based upon

  675. your work

  676. performance.

  677. Did you see

  678. the word

  679. inheritance?

  680. Do you know

  681. what that's

  682. for?

  683. That's for

  684. someone who

  685. is a

  686. son or

  687. a daughter.

  688. It's not

  689. based on

  690. performance.

  691. It's based

  692. on grace.

  693. Your reward

  694. is the

  695. salvation

  696. that will

  697. come

  698. fully

  699. realized.

  700. realized.

  701. That's

  702. knowing

  703. that

  704. is why

  705. we work

  706. heartily for

  707. the Lord.

  708. We're being

  709. aimed here.

  710. It's

  711. Christ the

  712. Lord who

  713. rewards us

  714. at the

  715. judgment,

  716. of course.

  717. It's a

  718. promise.

  719. Full

  720. and final

  721. salvation

  722. to be

  723. realized

  724. and enjoyed.

  725. It's the

  726. reward of

  727. our

  728. inheritance.

  729. We work

  730. hard because

  731. God in

  732. His grace

  733. has poured

  734. out His

  735. grace upon

  736. us and

  737. will continue

  738. to all the

  739. way through.

  740. But we

  741. also have

  742. something of

  743. a warning

  744. in verse

  745. 25.

  746. For the

  747. wrongdoer

  748. will be

  749. paid back

  750. for the

  751. wrong he

  752. has done.

  753. Know that.

  754. There's no

  755. partiality.

  756. You've got to

  757. know that.

  758. And if you

  759. are a

  760. worker in

  761. the room,

  762. if you

  763. are a

  764. saint,

  765. a subordinate,

  766. and you

  767. are doing

  768. what is

  769. wrong,

  770. and you

  771. know it,

  772. you're wearing

  773. grave clothes

  774. at work,

  775. you're

  776. deceiving

  777. your

  778. supervisors,

  779. you're being

  780. lazy,

  781. you're not

  782. trustworthy,

  783. if you're

  784. doing these

  785. things,

  786. that needs

  787. to stop

  788. because the

  789. Lord sees

  790. it.

  791. But there's

  792. another reason

  793. why this is

  794. here.

  795. let's say

  796. that you

  797. have a

  798. supervisor

  799. who's

  800. wronging

  801. you.

  802. Isn't it

  803. good to

  804. know

  805. that the

  806. Lord Jesus

  807. will hand

  808. out

  809. consequences

  810. to your

  811. supervisor?

  812. No

  813. partiality.

  814. Doesn't mean

  815. you need to

  816. stay at your

  817. place of

  818. employment,

  819. commitment,

  820. but what it

  821. does mean

  822. is like,

  823. okay,

  824. I don't

  825. need to

  826. take this

  827. into my

  828. own hands

  829. necessarily.

  830. I know

  831. the Lord

  832. is seeing

  833. this and

  834. He will

  835. act.

  836. Did you

  837. notice all

  838. the references

  839. to the

  840. Lord?

  841. Fearing the

  842. Lord,

  843. work

  844. heartily as

  845. for the

  846. Lord,

  847. knowing that

  848. from the

  849. Lord you

  850. will receive

  851. the inheritance,

  852. you are

  853. serving the

  854. Lord

  855. Christ.

  856. The

  857. emphasis

  858. is loud

  859. and clear

  860. if you are

  861. a subordinate.

  862. You work

  863. for the

  864. Lord Jesus.

  865. Do I

  866. have an

  867. amen?

  868. Okay,

  869. let's do

  870. some

  871. assessment.

  872. If you're

  873. a subordinate,

  874. I want to

  875. help you to

  876. assess

  877. yourself.

  878. Brother,

  879. sister,

  880. what is your

  881. aim at

  882. work?

  883. work?

  884. Who are

  885. you working

  886. for?

  887. You've got to

  888. remind yourself

  889. of who you

  890. are before

  891. you walk

  892. into your

  893. place of

  894. employment.

  895. Whether that's

  896. a work site,

  897. that's an

  898. actual building,

  899. whether that

  900. is some

  901. kind of

  902. home office,

  903. or you're

  904. visiting a

  905. client,

  906. whatever you're

  907. doing,

  908. you need to

  909. remember first

  910. and foremost

  911. that you're

  912. a saint who

  913. works and

  914. your aim is

  915. the Lord

  916. Jesus.

  917. You're going

  918. to work for

  919. Him.

  920. Brother,

  921. sister,

  922. what's your

  923. attitude like

  924. at work?

  925. Do you

  926. have a

  927. grave clothes

  928. attitude?

  929. Let me point

  930. you to some.

  931. Verse 8 and

  932. 9.

  933. Anger,

  934. wrath,

  935. malice,

  936. slander,

  937. obscene talk

  938. from your

  939. mouth,

  940. lying to

  941. one another.

  942. Is that

  943. what's

  944. characterizing

  945. you at

  946. work?

  947. That attitude

  948. is to go.

  949. That's grave

  950. clothes.

  951. We're to be

  952. marked by the

  953. 312,

  954. compassionate

  955. hearts,

  956. kindness,

  957. humility,

  958. meekness,

  959. and patience.

  960. Putting on

  961. the love,

  962. verse 14.

  963. It's

  964. attitude.

  965. That's what

  966. you bring to

  967. your place

  968. of employment

  969. and action.

  970. Brother and

  971. sister,

  972. are you

  973. working as to

  974. the Lord with

  975. sincerity of

  976. heart?

  977. Are you

  978. working hard?

  979. Are you

  980. working well?

  981. Are you

  982. pursuing excellence?

  983. Or are you

  984. being prodded?

  985. if you are

  986. known to be

  987. a Christian

  988. at your

  989. workplace,

  990. but you

  991. show up

  992. late,

  993. you do

  994. shoddy work,

  995. and you're

  996. continually being

  997. prodded to

  998. work harder

  999. and faster,

  1000. something needs

  1001. to change.

  1002. These are just

  1003. standards for

  1004. everybody.

  1005. You work for

  1006. the Lord,

  1007. and so what

  1008. will happen

  1009. is if you're

  1010. saying you're

  1011. a Christian,

  1012. but you're

  1013. living like

  1014. that,

  1015. it undermines

  1016. your witness.

  1017. And the way

  1018. that you

  1019. regain your

  1020. witness is by

  1021. working heartily

  1022. unto the

  1023. Lord.

  1024. One final

  1025. question before

  1026. we move on

  1027. to supervisors.

  1028. Just a

  1029. self-reflective

  1030. question.

  1031. Subordinate,

  1032. would you

  1033. want to be

  1034. your

  1035. supervisor?

  1036. Would you

  1037. want you

  1038. working for

  1039. you?

  1040. You get

  1041. it?

  1042. And if you

  1043. wouldn't,

  1044. why not?

  1045. We work for

  1046. the Lord,

  1047. intrinsically

  1048. motivated from

  1049. the heart.

  1050. Now let's

  1051. say that you're

  1052. a saint who

  1053. is in a

  1054. supervisory role.

  1055. We see this

  1056. in 4.1.

  1057. Now you

  1058. may be

  1059. reporting to

  1060. someone above

  1061. you, which

  1062. makes you a

  1063. subordinate, but

  1064. you have at

  1065. least one

  1066. person's

  1067. reporting to

  1068. you.

  1069. You have

  1070. responsibility for

  1071. the work

  1072. performance of

  1073. somebody else,

  1074. and therefore

  1075. you have

  1076. authority in

  1077. order to help

  1078. them work

  1079. better.

  1080. Now I just

  1081. want to remind

  1082. you of the

  1083. nature of

  1084. authority.

  1085. I've been

  1086. trying to

  1087. make this

  1088. case with

  1089. each of

  1090. these pairings,

  1091. with wives

  1092. and husbands

  1093. and children

  1094. and parents,

  1095. and here with

  1096. workers and

  1097. supervisors.

  1098. Remember,

  1099. authority is

  1100. an outworking

  1101. of responsibility.

  1102. If you have

  1103. responsibility for

  1104. someone, God

  1105. gives you

  1106. authority to

  1107. act on their

  1108. behalf.

  1109. And it's

  1110. true of the

  1111. workplace.

  1112. So supervisors

  1113. have the

  1114. distinct

  1115. responsibility to

  1116. make sure that

  1117. his or her

  1118. subordinates are

  1119. doing what

  1120. they've been

  1121. hired to do.

  1122. So as a

  1123. supervisor, you

  1124. have authority

  1125. over a

  1126. subordinate as

  1127. far as it

  1128. relates to

  1129. their work.

  1130. So if you're

  1131. a saint who's

  1132. supervising at

  1133. least one

  1134. subordinate, God

  1135. requires something

  1136. of you.

  1137. He's saying,

  1138. okay, here's how

  1139. I want you to

  1140. do your work,

  1141. supervisor.

  1142. And just like we

  1143. saw with

  1144. subordinates,

  1145. there is a

  1146. what, there is a

  1147. how, and there

  1148. is a why.

  1149. You ready?

  1150. The what?

  1151. 4.1.

  1152. Masters, treat

  1153. your bond

  1154. servants.

  1155. He's not saying

  1156. treat them with

  1157. candy.

  1158. That word is

  1159. more like direct

  1160. them, manage

  1161. them.

  1162. All I want to

  1163. put into place

  1164. here is dignify

  1165. them.

  1166. You treat your

  1167. subordinates with

  1168. dignity.

  1169. dignity.

  1170. Because they

  1171. are either

  1172. full-on image

  1173. bearers or

  1174. they're blood-bought

  1175. image bearers.

  1176. Treat them with

  1177. dignity.

  1178. And the

  1179. you're in this

  1180. is that you

  1181. don't own

  1182. them.

  1183. But you do

  1184. have responsibility

  1185. for them at

  1186. work.

  1187. So you want to

  1188. take this

  1189. exhortation to

  1190. our heart.

  1191. There is a

  1192. way in which

  1193. you as a

  1194. supervisor treat

  1195. your subordinates.

  1196. And now let's

  1197. look at the

  1198. manner of that,

  1199. the way of

  1200. that, how that

  1201. actually looks

  1202. like.

  1203. We see that.

  1204. Masters, treat

  1205. your bond

  1206. servants, two

  1207. words, justly

  1208. and fairly.

  1209. Justly and

  1210. fairly.

  1211. That word

  1212. justly, here's

  1213. how you need to

  1214. think about it.

  1215. It's biblically

  1216. speaking, it's

  1217. doing your

  1218. subordinates

  1219. right.

  1220. You do them

  1221. right.

  1222. And that

  1223. starts with

  1224. being very

  1225. clear with

  1226. them what's

  1227. expected of

  1228. them.

  1229. So if you're

  1230. a supervisor

  1231. in the room

  1232. and you're not

  1233. using some

  1234. kind of job

  1235. description,

  1236. you need to.

  1237. To be just.

  1238. To be clear.

  1239. To help them

  1240. know what

  1241. they're supposed

  1242. to do.

  1243. Clear on

  1244. what's expected.

  1245. And make sure

  1246. that thing's

  1247. updated.

  1248. And you

  1249. want to be

  1250. consistent with

  1251. consequences.

  1252. That's being

  1253. just.

  1254. You want to

  1255. help them

  1256. understand what's

  1257. expected of

  1258. them.

  1259. And when they

  1260. fall short, you

  1261. can reprimand

  1262. them.

  1263. And when they

  1264. do well, you

  1265. reward them.

  1266. But you're

  1267. consistent.

  1268. And it's all

  1269. based upon this

  1270. objective realities

  1271. laid out for

  1272. them in their

  1273. job description.

  1274. You are to be

  1275. honest and

  1276. helpful in

  1277. instructing how

  1278. they are to do

  1279. their jobs

  1280. well.

  1281. You're to be

  1282. impartial in

  1283. all of it.

  1284. Not showing

  1285. favorites.

  1286. You don't want

  1287. to be accused

  1288. if you're a

  1289. Christian supervisor

  1290. showing favor to

  1291. a Christian

  1292. subordinate,

  1293. especially if

  1294. they're not

  1295. performing well.

  1296. one of the

  1297. other ways that

  1298. we are just is

  1299. making sure those

  1300. who are our

  1301. subordinates are

  1302. rightly compensated

  1303. for their time

  1304. and labor.

  1305. And we

  1306. never,

  1307. never give

  1308. them reason to

  1309. sin against God.

  1310. Never.

  1311. Justly.

  1312. We dignify

  1313. people that way.

  1314. And then we

  1315. treat them

  1316. fairly.

  1317. It's not just

  1318. doing one of

  1319. your subordinates

  1320. right.

  1321. It's doing all

  1322. of your subordinates

  1323. right.

  1324. It's equity.

  1325. It's fairness

  1326. across the board.

  1327. That you're

  1328. consistent in

  1329. your treatment of

  1330. all the

  1331. subordinates that

  1332. you're responsible

  1333. for.

  1334. No partiality.

  1335. No favoritism.

  1336. No

  1337. I think what

  1338. Paul is getting

  1339. at here is

  1340. what's shown up

  1341. in this household

  1342. code.

  1343. It shows up

  1344. between wives

  1345. and husbands.

  1346. He says to

  1347. husbands,

  1348. don't be harsh

  1349. with your wives.

  1350. And then he

  1351. says to fathers,

  1352. hey, don't

  1353. discourage your

  1354. children.

  1355. I think what's

  1356. getting at here

  1357. with just and

  1358. fair is

  1359. excluding harsh

  1360. treatment of

  1361. your subordinates.

  1362. If you're being

  1363. harsh and

  1364. unpredictable,

  1365. do you know

  1366. what it does?

  1367. It destabilizes

  1368. the work

  1369. environment.

  1370. But if you're

  1371. being just

  1372. and fair,

  1373. it stabilizes

  1374. your work

  1375. environment.

  1376. All for Jesus.

  1377. Now why?

  1378. We've seen the

  1379. what?

  1380. Treat them with

  1381. dignity.

  1382. The how?

  1383. Justly and

  1384. fairly.

  1385. Now the why.

  1386. Again, it's

  1387. queued up with

  1388. the word

  1389. knowing.

  1390. Knowing that

  1391. you also have

  1392. a master in

  1393. heaven.

  1394. If you're a

  1395. supervisor in

  1396. the room,

  1397. you don't get

  1398. to do whatever

  1399. you want with

  1400. your subordinates

  1401. because you have

  1402. a heavenly

  1403. supervisor that

  1404. you're accountable

  1405. to.

  1406. He'll hold you

  1407. accountable.

  1408. by the way

  1409. you treat

  1410. your subordinates.

  1411. You work for

  1412. the Lord,

  1413. supervisor.

  1414. You work for

  1415. him.

  1416. And if he's

  1417. the controlling

  1418. center of your

  1419. life,

  1420. it will show up

  1421. in the way

  1422. that you treat

  1423. those you're

  1424. responsible for

  1425. in the workplace.

  1426. So let's do

  1427. some self-assessment,

  1428. supervisor.

  1429. You go into

  1430. work tomorrow.

  1431. what is your

  1432. aim?

  1433. Who are you

  1434. working for?

  1435. Who are you

  1436. supervising for?

  1437. Not for the

  1438. eyes of man.

  1439. Not to impress

  1440. your subordinates,

  1441. but for the

  1442. Lord Jesus.

  1443. What kind of

  1444. attitude are you

  1445. to bring as a

  1446. supervisor?

  1447. Are you to be

  1448. unjust,

  1449. unfair,

  1450. unpredictable,

  1451. and harsh?

  1452. That does not

  1453. line up with

  1454. the Christ wear

  1455. that you were

  1456. to be putting

  1457. on that morning.

  1458. No.

  1459. We are to live

  1460. out Christ's

  1461. likeness.

  1462. That doesn't

  1463. mean you're a

  1464. pushover.

  1465. That means you

  1466. are just and

  1467. fair to all

  1468. of your

  1469. subordinates.

  1470. What kind of

  1471. action?

  1472. It's that just

  1473. and fairness,

  1474. consistent and

  1475. clear.

  1476. you do all

  1477. of your

  1478. subordinates

  1479. right.

  1480. Because you're

  1481. worshiping while

  1482. you work.

  1483. Now, if you

  1484. are a

  1485. supervisor and

  1486. people know

  1487. you as a

  1488. Christian and

  1489. you are being

  1490. unjust and

  1491. unfair, you're

  1492. being harsh,

  1493. impatient, you

  1494. might get

  1495. results, but

  1496. are you

  1497. pleasing Jesus?

  1498. And the answer

  1499. is no, you're

  1500. not.

  1501. That needs to

  1502. change for the

  1503. glory of Jesus.

  1504. So, supervisor,

  1505. here's the

  1506. question for you.

  1507. Would you

  1508. want to be your

  1509. subordinate?

  1510. Would you

  1511. want to be

  1512. reporting to

  1513. you?

  1514. Whether you

  1515. are a

  1516. subordinate

  1517. or supervisor

  1518. or both,

  1519. work life?

  1520. If you're a

  1521. saint, you

  1522. work for

  1523. Jesus.

  1524. Your work

  1525. life is to

  1526. magnify Christ,

  1527. to telescope

  1528. him so that

  1529. other people can

  1530. see how wonderful

  1531. he is.

  1532. It shows up in

  1533. the way you

  1534. work, how you

  1535. interact with

  1536. fellow workmates,

  1537. to work in a

  1538. manner worthy

  1539. of the Lord.

  1540. I started this

  1541. sermon talking

  1542. about snow

  1543. white, whistling

  1544. while you work.

  1545. Brothers and

  1546. sisters, we can

  1547. do far better

  1548. than whistle

  1549. while you work

  1550. because Christ

  1551. is the controlling

  1552. center of our

  1553. lives.

  1554. I mean, he's the

  1555. king of creation.

  1556. He is the king

  1557. of the new

  1558. creation.

  1559. He is full

  1560. reign of every

  1561. area of our

  1562. lives.

  1563. Because he's the

  1564. controlling center,

  1565. we worship him

  1566. while we work.

  1567. Remember

  1568. chapter 3, 17,

  1569. in whatever you

  1570. do, whatever you

  1571. do in word or

  1572. deed, do

  1573. everything in the

  1574. name of the

  1575. Lord Jesus,

  1576. giving thanks to

  1577. God the Father

  1578. through him.

  1579. If you're a

  1580. wife, do

  1581. everything in the

  1582. name of the

  1583. Lord Jesus,

  1584. word or deed.

  1585. If you're a

  1586. husband, do

  1587. everything, word

  1588. or deed.

  1589. If you're a

  1590. child or parent,

  1591. everything, word

  1592. or deed.

  1593. Subordinate,

  1594. everything, word

  1595. and deed.

  1596. Supervisor,

  1597. everything, word

  1598. and deed.

  1599. Do everything in

  1600. the name of the

  1601. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1602. He's your

  1603. controlling center.

  1604. Brothers and

  1605. sisters,

  1606. saints of the

  1607. living God,

  1608. God, when you

  1609. go in to work

  1610. tomorrow, you

  1611. can go in

  1612. singing, oh,

  1613. when the

  1614. saint comes

  1615. walking in, oh,

  1616. when this saint

  1617. comes walking

  1618. in, I'm doing

  1619. all my work for

  1620. my King Jesus.

  1621. Oh, when the

  1622. saint comes walking

  1623. in, walking out,

  1624. we work for

  1625. Jesus, therefore,

  1626. we worship him

  1627. while we work,

  1628. and it is a

  1629. witness to him

  1630. while we work.

  1631. Let me pray.

  1632. Lord Jesus, we are

  1633. so thankful that

  1634. you call us

  1635. out.

  1636. you call us

  1637. out of the

  1638. worldly grime

  1639. of work,

  1640. and you call

  1641. us to do

  1642. our work from

  1643. our hearts

  1644. for you with

  1645. all that we

  1646. got.

  1647. Lord Jesus,

  1648. you're worthy.

  1649. Would you,

  1650. Father, do a

  1651. work by your

  1652. spirit in which

  1653. we, this

  1654. week, even

  1655. tomorrow, we

  1656. work aimed

  1657. at Jesus on

  1658. Christ's time

  1659. because you

  1660. have wonderfully

  1661. changed us.

  1662. Lord Jesus,

  1663. you are worthy.

  1664. It's your name

  1665. we pray.

  1666. Amen.
