  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Colossians chapter 4, it's on page 1170 of your pew Bible.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  2. And you need to know something that the Apostle Paul has been writing Colossians and up to

  3. this point he's been writing primarily to Christians and how to relate to other Christians.

  4. And here in 4.2, 2 through 6, he does a pivot and he starts talking about, writing about

  5. how we are to relate with non-Christians.

  6. Hear God's Word.

  7. Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

  8. At the same time, pray also for us that God may open to us a door for the Word to declare

  9. the mystery of Christ, on account of which I'm in prison, that I may make it clear which

  10. is how I ought, even must, speak.

  11. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.

  12. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought

  13. or must answer each person.

  14. May God bless the reading and now the preaching of His Word.

  15. If you've lived long enough, you've begun to accumulate missed opportunities.

  16. Missed opportunities in love, the one that got away.

  17. Missed opportunities in career.

  18. Maybe I should have taken that job with so-and-so.

  19. Missed opportunities of enrichment.

  20. One of my regrets is I was a jock in high school and I thought everybody in theater were a bunch

  21. of nerds and I so regret it.

  22. I wish I was in theater in high school.

  23. Missed opportunities.

  24. Have you noticed that with missed opportunities, oftentimes they're accompanied by regret?

  25. Regret.

  26. There is a regularly missed opportunity unique to Christians.

  27. Missed witnessing opportunities.

  28. When you hear witness, you may think court of law.

  29. A witness takes the stand.

  30. A bailiff says something to the extent of, put your hand on the Bible.

  31. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help me God.

  32. And the witness says, I do.

  33. I do.

  34. A witness when it comes to the Christian faith is someone who is telling the truth, the whole truth,

  35. and nothing but the truth about Jesus and what he has done in your life.

  36. We bear witness.

  37. But many Christians, you're going to have to give me an amen on this one.

  38. But many Christians would rather have a root canal than bear witness to Christ to people they know.

  39. Do I have an amen?

  40. Why don't we witness?

  41. Why are we missing witnessing opportunities?

  42. Not everyone, but many of us.

  43. God is giving us witnessing opportunities.

  44. There's a number of reasons why we don't witness.

  45. But I think it boils down to one thing.

  46. We witness to Christ little because we treasure Christ little.

  47. And so the solution to witnessing more is to treasure Christ more.

  48. Jesus himself said, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

  49. Did you know you talk about what you treasure?

  50. It's an overflow.

  51. You talk about what you treasure.

  52. And when Christ is the controlling center of your life,

  53. when he is the treasured center of your life,

  54. you're going to want to talk about him.

  55. You must talk about him.

  56. Brothers and sisters, here's what I want to convince you of.

  57. Let's not just ask God for opportunities to witness.

  58. Let's take them.

  59. Let's ask God for opportunities to witness,

  60. and let's take them.

  61. So three points to the sermon.

  62. To help you take the opportunities that God will surely give us,

  63. three points.

  64. Treasure.

  65. Pray.

  66. Show and tell.

  67. Let's take the witnessing opportunities God gives us this summer

  68. because we get to talk about treasure.

  69. First point.

  70. The treasure of our witness.

  71. How do we overcome the reasons why we don't witness?

  72. Here are some reasons.

  73. We're distracted by the world.

  74. We're distracted by the temporary trinkets of the world.

  75. How do you overcome that?

  76. Or, I think with many of us in the room,

  77. we're afraid.

  78. We're afraid what people will think about us,

  79. Jesus freak,

  80. or we're afraid of what it will do to a relationship.

  81. We think that if I share,

  82. talk about Jesus to this person,

  83. it will forever change our relationship.

  84. And so you're unwilling to talk about the greatest treasure ever

  85. out of fear of what someone will think

  86. and how that will affect your relationship.

  87. Sometimes we don't share the gospel because we don't know what to say.

  88. One of the things in our membership interviews

  89. that the elders have started doing is asking this question,

  90. what is the gospel?

  91. And one of the things that we have found is a lack of clarity

  92. in what the gospel is and how people can communicate it.

  93. And so I just want you to know up front

  94. that we've made this book available,

  95. What is the Gospel? by Greg Gilbert.

  96. We've got ten copies outside either of the doors.

  97. Grab one per family.

  98. This will bring clarity in how to communicate the gospel.

  99. He does that in four words.

  100. God, man, Christ, response.

  101. Very helpful.

  102. But again, I think that's more symptomatic

  103. of why we don't witness.

  104. The cause, I believe, is that we treasure Jesus little.

  105. So we overcome these things by treasuring Jesus more.

  106. And out of the abundance of your heart,

  107. your mouth will speak.

  108. You'll actually say the name Jesus to people.

  109. Amen.

  110. So how do you do that?

  111. The best thing for our evangelism,

  112. brothers and sisters,

  113. is to treasure Jesus above all else.

  114. We get to talk about treasure.

  115. So let me just remind you of this treasure

  116. to stir your hearts

  117. and maybe stir your want

  118. to tell someone about this Jesus.

  119. Remember his person.

  120. Do you remember this from chapter 1, verse 15?

  121. That this Jesus,

  122. he is the image of the invisible God.

  123. If you flip to Colossians 2, verse 9,

    Colossians 2:9

  124. you read this,

  125. for in him,

  126. Jesus,

  127. the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.

  128. In this person of Jesus,

  129. he's totally God

  130. and totally man,

  131. one person.

  132. Treasure.

  133. That's whom we proclaim.

  134. That's whom we get to talk about.

  135. If you look at Colossians 1, verse 15,

    Colossians 1:15

  136. even closer,

  137. you see this.

  138. He is the image of the invisible God,

  139. the firstborn of all creation.

  140. Verse 17,

  141. and he's before all things

  142. and in him all things hold together.

  143. He is the head of the church,

  144. the body of the church.

  145. He is the beginning,

  146. the firstborn from the dead.

  147. Firstborn.

  148. Firstborn of creation.

  149. Firstborn from the dead.

  150. And that firstborn language

  151. is talking about kingship.

  152. Psalm 89, 27.

  153. He's the king of all creation

  154. and he's the king of the new creation.

  155. Firstborn from the dead.

  156. That's who we get to talk about.

  157. He reigns over all things.

  158. Because of who Jesus is,

  159. totally God,

  160. totally man,

  161. king of creation,

  162. king of the new creation,

  163. he reigns over all.

  164. You know what that means?

  165. He is the controlling center

  166. of all things.

  167. That's the reality of it.

  168. And we get to tell people about that.

  169. But it's just not his person

  170. that is just of incomparable worth.

  171. It's what he does.

  172. It's his work.

  173. The person and work of Jesus Christ.

  174. Our treasure.

  175. You know, in 3, 4,

  176. we are told,

  177. when Christ, who is your life,

  178. appears,

  179. he's going to appear.

  180. He's going to come back.

  181. He's going to return.

  182. And when he comes back and returns,

  183. he's going to judge everyone.

  184. Matthew 25 talks about it

  185. as the separation from the sheep,

  186. from the goats,

  187. Christians from non-Christians.

  188. Matthew 13 uses a parable

  189. to talk about it

  190. as a harvest that separates

  191. the wheat from the weeds.

  192. But he's also reigning right now.

  193. Look at 3, 1.

  194. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  195. seek the things that are above.

  196. Where Christ is,

  197. seated at the right hand of God.

  198. He is seated at the right hand of God,

  199. reigning on high.

  200. And do you know what he's doing?

  201. One of the things he's doing,

  202. he's expanding his new creation kingdom

  203. across the world.

  204. Right now.

  205. Today.

  206. All around the globe.

  207. He's gathering for himself

  208. a people from every tribe,

  209. tongue, and nation

  210. who will worship him

  211. and live for him

  212. and follow him.

  213. Boast in him.

  214. But the work,

  215. the work,

  216. the central work of Jesus

  217. that we get to talk about

  218. as the greatest of all treasures

  219. is his death and resurrection.

  220. Totally God, totally man,

  221. died on a Roman cross

  222. in the place of sinners

  223. and then was raised from the dead.

  224. Do you know what that accomplished?

  225. Salvation.

  226. Salvation.

  227. Listen to how the Apostle Paul

  228. talks about it

  229. in Colossians 2, 13 and 14.

  230. And you,

  231. speaking to Christian saints,

  232. you who were dead in your trespasses

  233. in the uncircumcision of your flesh,

  234. God made alive together with him,

  235. having forgiven us

  236. all our trespasses

  237. by canceling the record of debt

  238. that stood against us

  239. with its legal demands.

  240. This he set aside,

  241. nailing it to the cross.

  242. His death and resurrection

  243. resulted in the forgiveness of our sin

  244. which gives us new life,

  245. new creations.

  246. It's the new creation kingdom.

  247. This is treasure.

  248. And this is whom we proclaim.

  249. The person and work of Jesus Christ.

  250. For a long time, it was a mystery.

  251. The Old Testament pointed to it

  252. that there's this king coming

  253. in Isaiah 53.

  254. He would die in the place of sinners

  255. and he'd be raised,

  256. but nobody knew who it was.

  257. And then Jesus showed up.

  258. And the apostle Paul says,

  259. he's the one.

  260. Him we proclaim.

  261. He's the Christ.

  262. Mystery made known.

  263. There's this little parable.

  264. It's one of my favorite parables

  265. in Matthew 13, 13, 44.

  266. Jesus tells this parable

  267. of a guy who is out in a field digging.

  268. Dig, dig, dig, dig, dig, dig.

  269. And his shovel hits something.

  270. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.

  271. Pulls it out.

  272. It's treasure.

  273. Buried treasure.

  274. And so what Jesus says

  275. is what this guy did.

  276. He covered it back up

  277. and then in his joy,

  278. he sells all that he has

  279. and obtains the field

  280. and makes the treasure his own.

  281. It's a concealed treasure

  282. that's made known.

  283. Do you know who that is?

  284. Jesus is the treasure.

  285. We get to speak of treasure, gang.

  286. Think of witnessing,

  287. not as root canal,

  288. and it's treasure talking.

  289. Brothers and sisters,

  290. when we pray for opportunities

  291. for God to open doors

  292. to proclaim Christ,

  293. we're asking for opportunities

  294. to speak about treasure.

  295. Now that brings me

  296. to this passage in particular

  297. where Paul pivots.

  298. He takes a turn.

  299. He's been talking to Christians

  300. about relating to other Christians

  301. and now he starts talking

  302. to these Christians in Colossae.

  303. Remember, Paul's in Rome.

  304. He's in prison.

  305. He's shackled to a Roman Praetorian guard

  306. 1,300 miles away from Colossae.

  307. And he says to them,

  308. continue steadfastly in prayer,

  309. being watchful in it

  310. with thanksgiving.

  311. The prayers of our witness.

  312. What we pray.

  313. Prayer, if you're wondering,

  314. is simply just talking to God.

  315. And there's a variety of prayers

  316. you can pray.

  317. You can pray prayers of thanksgiving.

  318. You can pray prayers of lament.

  319. You can pray prayers of confession.

  320. You can pray prayers of supplication

  321. where you make a petition

  322. on behalf of other people.

  323. There's all sorts of different

  324. kinds of prayers.

  325. And what prayer does

  326. is it expresses our ongoing dependency

  327. on our Christ.

  328. He's the vine.

  329. We're the branches.

  330. Apart from him,

  331. we can do nothing.

  332. It aligns us with the will of God.

  333. And so Paul is saying,

  334. hey, church, pray.

  335. And when he calls us to pray,

  336. he does two things.

  337. He tells us how to pray,

  338. and then he tells us what to pray.

  339. So let's look at the how.

  340. In verse 2,

  341. continue steadfastly in prayer,

  342. being watchful in it

  343. with thanksgiving.

  344. Continue steadfastly

  345. is just a way of talking about

  346. praying without ceasing.

  347. Maybe you know that

  348. from 1 Thessalonians 5.17.

  349. It's persevering prayer.

  350. It's devoted prayer.

  351. Do you know why we're to be

  352. without ceasing,

  353. continually steadfast in our prayer?

  354. It's because we're in constant

  355. need of Jesus.

  356. He's the vine where the branch is.

  357. Apart from him,

  358. we can do nothing.

  359. He's the controlling center

  360. of our life.

  361. You can even say

  362. he's the enlivening center

  363. of our lives.

  364. But did you notice

  365. the word watchful?

  366. Continue steadfastly in prayer.

  367. Don't stop.

  368. Keep trusting in Jesus.

  369. Being watchful in it,

  370. in prayer.

  371. What is this watchfulness?

  372. Well, it means to be alert.

  373. It's like DEFCON 4.

  374. Be aware.

  375. And that word watchful

  376. is used a variety

  377. of different places

  378. in the New Testament.

  379. Jesus talks about

  380. his disciples in Gethsemane.

  381. He says,

  382. hey, watch and pray

  383. lest you fall into temptation.

  384. In Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  385. the apostle Paul

  386. is writing to the Ephesians

  387. about spiritual warfare.

  388. And he tells them

  389. to be alert in verse 18,

  390. making supplication

  391. for all the saints.

  392. In 1 Peter 5.18,

  393. Peter says,

  394. be sober-minded.

  395. Be alert.

  396. Pay attention.

  397. Watch out for lion attack

  398. because the devil prowls around

  399. like a lion

  400. seeking someone to devour.

  401. There is spiritual warfare

  402. all around us

  403. and we are praying

  404. watchfully.

  405. Even from Colossians chapter 2,

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  406. we saw that there is

  407. this false teaching

  408. infecting the Colossian church

  409. and we are to be watchful

  410. of false teaching

  411. because it is demonic.

  412. It takes our attention

  413. off of Christ.

  414. But I think,

  415. given the context of this,

  416. there is more

  417. to this watchfulness.

  418. I mean,

  419. Paul is just about

  420. to tell them

  421. to pray for him

  422. that God would open doors

  423. to share the gospel

  424. with people in Rome.

  425. And then he says

  426. in verse 5,

  427. walk in wisdom

  428. toward outsiders.

  429. There seems to be

  430. a watchfulness

  431. of whom you are living around.

  432. It is part of this

  433. being on alert,

  434. being aware of,

  435. even praying for.

  436. It is this next word

  437. that,

  438. you know how foodies

  439. talk about pairings

  440. of things

  441. like this beverage

  442. and this food?

  443. I am really interested

  444. in this pairing

  445. between watchfulness

  446. and prayer

  447. and being thankful

  448. in prayer.

  449. Isn't that interesting?

  450. What kind of pairing

  451. is that?

  452. All throughout Colossians,

  453. you see the word

  454. thanksgiving show up.

  455. It's 1, 10, 2, 6, 3, 15,

  456. 16, and 17

  457. and here in chapter 4.

  458. And usually,

  459. it's a cluster.

  460. This thanksgiving

  461. is clustered around

  462. what Christ has done

  463. for us.

  464. This gratitude

  465. given voice

  466. over being delivered

  467. from the domain

  468. of darkness

  469. and transferred

  470. into the kingdom

  471. of the beloved son.

  472. We are to be thankful

  473. always

  474. in what God

  475. in Christ

  476. has done

  477. for us.

  478. Which makes

  479. for an interesting

  480. pairing

  481. with watchfulness.

  482. Do you know

  483. what it does?

  484. It creates

  485. tension in us.

  486. Because when we're aware

  487. of the non-Christians

  488. in our midst

  489. and we're aware

  490. that they are

  491. in darkness,

  492. that they're under

  493. God's wrath

  494. because of their sin,

  495. they're trying

  496. to make sense

  497. of this world

  498. apart from God's word,

  499. it grieves us

  500. and then we are thinking

  501. we're so,

  502. God, thank you

  503. for saving me

  504. from that.

  505. It creates

  506. tension in us.

  507. It's good tension.

  508. It's burden

  509. for the non-Christians

  510. in our midst.

  511. this first aspect

  512. of praying

  513. of continually

  514. steadfast.

  515. We are constantly

  516. trusting in Jesus.

  517. We're watchful

  518. for a number

  519. of things

  520. but particularly

  521. towards non-Christians

  522. in our life

  523. and we're also

  524. thankful

  525. for what God

  526. has done

  527. in our life

  528. and it results

  529. in us

  530. wanting the same

  531. for those people

  532. around us

  533. who are presently

  534. living in darkness.

  535. But it's not

  536. just that.

  537. just not the how

  538. we pray.

  539. By the way,

  540. are you praying?

  541. Are you praying

  542. watchfully?

  543. Are you praying

  544. regularly

  545. giving thanks

  546. to God

  547. for what he's

  548. done in your life?

  549. But now we move

  550. to the what.

  551. In verses 3 and 4

  552. Paul makes this

  553. two-fold request.

  554. It's not really

  555. a request.

  556. It's more of

  557. an urging.

  558. He says this,

  559. in light

  560. of their praying

  561. he says,

  562. hey at the same

  563. time,

  564. well you're

  565. praying for

  566. all of that

  567. around you guys

  568. pray also

  569. for us

  570. that

  571. God may open

  572. to us

  573. a door

  574. for the word

  575. to declare

  576. the mystery

  577. of Christ

  578. on account

  579. of which

  580. I am in

  581. prison.

  582. He's saying

  583. open it,

  584. pray for us

  585. 1300 miles

  586. away that God

  587. would open

  588. a door

  589. for us.

  590. the open

  591. door language

  592. is we see

  593. it showing

  594. up in

  595. 1 and 2

  596. Corinthians

  597. Acts 14

  598. and what

  599. that is

  600. talking about

  601. is God

  602. sovereignly

  603. and clearly

  604. orchestrating

  605. events to

  606. give non-Christians

  607. an opportunity

  608. to hear about

  609. Jesus Christ.

  610. That's an

  611. open door.

  612. When you're

  613. like, oh boy,

  614. thank you Lord

  615. for this.

  616. I was in

  617. festival the

  618. other day.

  619. I was just

  620. in a bike

  621. crash,

  622. so I was

  623. moving slow.

  624. I was picking

  625. Sprecher root beer

  626. out.

  627. This lady

  628. comes up to

  629. me and says,

  630. oh, you look

  631. like you're in

  632. pain.

  633. And then she

  634. went into

  635. talking about

  636. how she

  637. wants to

  638. dance with

  639. her daughter

  640. at her

  641. daughter's

  642. wedding.

  643. And she

  644. was like

  645. just sad

  646. because she

  647. probably wouldn't

  648. because she's

  649. had all these

  650. surgeries.

  651. And I said,

  652. ma'am,

  653. do you know

  654. I'm a

  655. pastor?

  656. She goes,

  657. oh, that's

  658. nice.

  659. And I'm

  660. like, do you

  661. know what I

  662. tell people

  663. in my

  664. church when

  665. they're

  666. having body

  667. problems?

  668. That Jesus

  669. is alive.

  670. That he's

  671. been raised

  672. from the dead.

  673. And he

  674. promises

  675. resurrection

  676. bodies to

  677. all who

  678. believe.

  679. In the

  680. aisle of

  681. festival.

  682. Open

  683. door.

  684. It's

  685. clear.

  686. It's

  687. apparent.

  688. And it's

  689. an open

  690. door for

  691. the gospel.

  692. The word.

  693. The mystery

  694. of Christ.

  695. It's

  696. actually the

  697. mystery about

  698. Christ.

  699. It's

  700. actually the

  701. mystery made

  702. known in

  703. Christ.

  704. Him we

  705. proclaim.

  706. Paul's

  707. saying,

  708. hey,

  709. would you

  710. pray for us?

  711. I'm holding

  712. my hand up

  713. because he's

  714. probably chained

  715. to a Roman

  716. praetorian.

  717. would you

  718. pray for us

  719. that God

  720. would open

  721. up doors

  722. to the

  723. gospel?

  724. Of

  725. everything

  726. Paul could

  727. have asked

  728. for.

  729. Of

  730. anything he

  731. could have

  732. urged the

  733. Colossians to

  734. pray for.

  735. He

  736. prays that

  737. God would

  738. prays

  739. that he

  740. asked them

  741. to pray

  742. for God

  743. to open

  744. doors.

  745. It is

  746. extraordinary.

  747. Do you

  748. know what

  749. that means?

  750. It shows

  751. something of

  752. Paul's

  753. priorities,

  754. right?

  755. And it

  756. points to

  757. what Paul

  758. treasures.

  759. He treasures

  760. Jesus and he

  761. wants other

  762. people to

  763. treasure Jesus

  764. too, even

  765. praetorian

  766. guards.

  767. So the

  768. first urging,

  769. the first of

  770. this two-fold

  771. request is pray

  772. that God would

  773. open doors for

  774. us, that we

  775. would proclaim

  776. Christ even

  777. in prison.

  778. second, he

  779. says that I

  780. may make it

  781. clear which

  782. is how I

  783. ought to

  784. speak.

  785. That's in

  786. verse 4,

  787. that I

  788. may make

  789. it clear.

  790. That he

  791. can make

  792. clear to

  793. those he

  794. gets to

  795. share the

  796. gospel with.

  797. God opens

  798. the door and

  799. that he

  800. walks through

  801. it and he's

  802. saying, would

  803. you pray that

  804. God would

  805. give me clarity

  806. of speech with

  807. those non-Christians

  808. I get to talk

  809. to the gospel?

  810. Share the

  811. gospel with.

  812. If the

  813. apostle Paul

  814. needed God's

  815. help in being

  816. clear to preach

  817. the gospel,

  818. what does that

  819. mean for us?

  820. We need it

  821. too.

  822. Paul wanted

  823. to be simple

  824. and clear in

  825. communicating the

  826. person and work

  827. of Jesus Christ

  828. to anyone that

  829. God opened the

  830. door to share

  831. the gospel with.

  832. God

  833. again, I want

  834. to recommend

  835. to you that

  836. book by Greg

  837. Gilbert.

  838. It makes the

  839. gospel really

  840. clear.

  841. God, man,

  842. Christ, response.

  843. God is the

  844. creator.

  845. Man sins

  846. against him.

  847. God in his

  848. love for these

  849. sinners sends

  850. his son, Jesus

  851. Christ, to die

  852. in their place.

  853. And the way to

  854. respond is by

  855. repentance and

  856. faith.

  857. simple and

  858. clear.

  859. There's an

  860. interesting word

  861. here that I

  862. may make it

  863. clear, which is

  864. how I ought to

  865. speak.

  866. And that word

  867. ought, it's

  868. actually in the

  869. original language,

  870. it's a little bit

  871. more muscular.

  872. It's a little bit

  873. more forceful.

  874. It's more like

  875. must.

  876. Which is how I

  877. must speak.

  878. clearly

  879. proclaiming Christ

  880. when given an

  881. opportunity.

  882. I must.

  883. Woe is me if I

  884. do not preach the

  885. gospel, says

  886. Paul.

  887. Well, what does

  888. this mean for

  889. us?

  890. What does all

  891. this mean for

  892. us?

  893. Well, we need to

  894. be praying,

  895. right?

  896. Steadfast,

  897. watchful,

  898. thankfully.

  899. And we too

  900. should be asking

  901. God to open

  902. doors.

  903. Not for the

  904. apostle Paul,

  905. he's dead, he's in

  906. the presence of

  907. Jesus, he doesn't

  908. need that now.

  909. But we have

  910. mission partners.

  911. We're mission

  912. partners,

  913. Kenosha Christian

  914. Academy.

  915. We can pray that

  916. God would open

  917. doors for the

  918. staff at Kenosha

  919. Christian Academy

  920. to give doors,

  921. open doors into

  922. families in our

  923. community.

  924. And that God

  925. would also give

  926. the staff of

  927. KCA clarity and

  928. courage in

  929. proclaiming Christ.

  930. Alliance,

  931. Crisis Pregnancy

  932. Center, we're

  933. partners, mission

  934. partners with them.

  935. They preach Christ

  936. to people who are

  937. in crisis.

  938. We pray for open

  939. doors, that they

  940. would proclaim Christ

  941. clearly,

  942. courageously.

  943. the Titmans with

  944. their weekends to

  945. remember.

  946. Paul Bondi in

  947. Kenya, reaching

  948. Indians Ministries

  949. International,

  950. Sajay Lukos.

  951. I have a Zoom

  952. call set up for

  953. this Thursday

  954. morning.

  955. It's a Zoom

  956. call with Sajay

  957. and a number of

  958. their leaders from

  959. a state in India

  960. called Uttar

  961. Pradesh.

  962. And we're going to

  963. learn about what

  964. God is doing in

  965. Uttar Pradesh.

  966. It's a northern

  967. state.

  968. And we get to

  969. pray that God

  970. would open doors

  971. for our brothers

  972. and sisters there

  973. to preach the

  974. gospel.

  975. Make it clear.

  976. Be courageous.

  977. But even more

  978. so, it's for us.

  979. We pray these

  980. things for us, that

  981. God would open

  982. doors to the

  983. gospel for us,

  984. Christ the King

  985. Church, corporately

  986. and individually,

  987. that we can share

  988. the treasure of

  989. Christ.

  990. Christ, of who

  991. he is and what

  992. he's done.

  993. Think about it

  994. this way.

  995. I don't think

  996. this is irreverent.

  997. Imagine Jesus

  998. seated at the

  999. right hand of God

  1000. in glory, looking

  1001. at our church.

  1002. Ask me.

  1003. Ask me.

  1004. I'll open doors

  1005. for you.

  1006. Ask me.

  1007. I'm sovereign

  1008. over all.

  1009. All things are

  1010. under my feet.

  1011. You ask me, I

  1012. will open doors

  1013. for you.

  1014. Make me known.

  1015. Ask me.

  1016. Ask me.

  1017. Do you know

  1018. why?

  1019. He wants people

  1020. to worship him

  1021. more than any of

  1022. us in the room.

  1023. He wants to be

  1024. treasured.

  1025. He wants people

  1026. living in darkness

  1027. to treasure him.

  1028. He wants to use

  1029. us to that

  1030. end.

  1031. Ask me.

  1032. Ask me.

  1033. Brothers and

  1034. sisters, let's

  1035. not miss the

  1036. opportunities this

  1037. summer.

  1038. Let's be asking

  1039. for them and

  1040. taking them.

  1041. One more point.

  1042. Show and tell.

  1043. Now, we see

  1044. this in verse

  1045. five and six.

  1046. The show and

  1047. tell of our

  1048. treasure.

  1049. Showing and

  1050. telling of our

  1051. treasure.

  1052. You may be

  1053. like, oh, how

  1054. does that happen?

  1055. We're praying for

  1056. open doors.

  1057. Then what?

  1058. Show and tell.

  1059. Walk and talk.

  1060. It's right there

  1061. in five and six.

  1062. When I was in

  1063. second grade, I

  1064. went to Roaring

  1065. Brook Elementary

  1066. School in Avon,

  1067. Connecticut, and my

  1068. second grade teacher

  1069. was a woman named

  1070. Mrs. Ball.

  1071. I was in love

  1072. with her.

  1073. She had this

  1074. thing.

  1075. I was in love

  1076. with a lot of

  1077. my teachers.

  1078. Well, she did

  1079. this thing called

  1080. show and tell.

  1081. And so my

  1082. classmates brought

  1083. in things and

  1084. showed and

  1085. tell.

  1086. I brought in

  1087. our family dog,

  1088. a German shepherd

  1089. named Jody.

  1090. I love the dog.

  1091. And I could just

  1092. talk about her.

  1093. This is my dog.

  1094. Talk, talk, talk,

  1095. talk, talk.

  1096. Show and tell.

  1097. It wasn't hard.

  1098. Because I love

  1099. my dog.

  1100. Jesus is greater

  1101. than a dog.

  1102. We get to show

  1103. and tell the

  1104. treasure of

  1105. Jesus.

  1106. How do you do

  1107. that?

  1108. Well, the show is

  1109. verse five.

  1110. Walk in wisdom

  1111. toward outsiders,

  1112. making the best

  1113. use of the time.

  1114. Of course, that

  1115. word walk is the

  1116. Hebrew way of

  1117. talking about living

  1118. your life.

  1119. Walking in a manner

  1120. worthy of the

  1121. Lord, 110.

  1122. And just as we

  1123. received Christ

  1124. Jesus as Lord,

  1125. so walk in him

  1126. to six.

  1127. We are to live

  1128. our lives with

  1129. Jesus as the

  1130. controlling center

  1131. of our lives.

  1132. To please him,

  1133. which brings us

  1134. to wisdom.

  1135. Walk wisely.

  1136. Look at

  1137. 2.3.

  1138. Chapter 2,

  1139. verse 3 of

  1140. Colossians.

  1141. In whom,

  1142. Jesus,

  1143. are hidden all

  1144. the treasures of

  1145. wisdom and

  1146. knowledge.

  1147. 1 Corinthians

  1148. 1.30.

  1149. Paul says that

  1150. Christ Jesus is

  1151. our wisdom.

  1152. In the Old

  1153. Testament,

  1154. wisdom was the

  1155. art of godly

  1156. living.

  1157. It was you

  1158. fear the Lord

  1159. and you live

  1160. your life in

  1161. light of who

  1162. God is.

  1163. Applied to

  1164. this, it's

  1165. Jesus Christ is

  1166. the controlling,

  1167. treasured center

  1168. of your life.

  1169. Right?

  1170. And we are to

  1171. live with Christ

  1172. as the controlling

  1173. center of our

  1174. life around

  1175. outsiders,

  1176. non-Christians,

  1177. those who are

  1178. still living in

  1179. the domain of

  1180. darkness.

  1181. We don't live

  1182. one way when

  1183. we're gathered

  1184. together and

  1185. another way when

  1186. we're apart.

  1187. We're always

  1188. living for Jesus.

  1189. And that

  1190. requires a

  1191. change of

  1192. clothes.

  1193. It's

  1194. love.

  1195. Remember back

  1196. in 3.5, we

  1197. are to put to

  1198. death what is

  1199. earthly in you,

  1200. sexual immorality,

  1201. impurity, passion,

  1202. evil desire,

  1203. and covetousness.

  1204. It's all sexual

  1205. sin.

  1206. And then verse

  1207. 8 and 9, but

  1208. now you must put

  1209. them all away,

  1210. anger, wrath,

  1211. malice, slander,

  1212. and obscene talk

  1213. from your mouth.

  1214. Do not lie to

  1215. one another.

  1216. You've put on

  1217. the new self,

  1218. which is being

  1219. renewed in the

  1220. knowledge after the

  1221. image of its

  1222. creator, who is

  1223. Jesus.

  1224. These are the

  1225. grave clothes of

  1226. the old self, and

  1227. we don't wear

  1228. them anymore.

  1229. We don't wear

  1230. them in

  1231. relationship with

  1232. non-Christians.

  1233. We don't engage

  1234. in sexual

  1235. immorality, period.

  1236. We don't engage

  1237. in sexual

  1238. immorality with

  1239. non-Christians.

  1240. We don't speak,

  1241. carry ourselves

  1242. hatefully anymore.

  1243. Inga, rest,

  1244. math, malice,

  1245. math, slander.

  1246. We don't do

  1247. that anymore.

  1248. That's not how we

  1249. interact with

  1250. non-Christians.

  1251. Because we've got

  1252. grave clothes,

  1253. those are off.

  1254. It's not who we

  1255. are, but we're

  1256. going to put

  1257. Christ wear on.

  1258. 312, how are we

  1259. to walk in the

  1260. midst of non-Christians?

  1261. Put on then as

  1262. God's chosen ones,

  1263. holy, saints,

  1264. and beloved,

  1265. compassionate hearts,

  1266. meekness,

  1267. humility, meekness,

  1268. and patience,

  1269. bearing with one

  1270. another, putting on

  1271. love, the love.

  1272. What Paul is

  1273. getting at here,

  1274. walk in wisdom

  1275. toward outsiders,

  1276. in the midst of

  1277. outsiders, is he

  1278. assumes that we're

  1279. in close proximity

  1280. to non-Christians.

  1281. It is this

  1282. intersection between

  1283. kingdoms.

  1284. kings.

  1285. You are a saint

  1286. of the kingdom

  1287. of God,

  1288. transferred into

  1289. the kingdom of

  1290. the beloved son,

  1291. and you are

  1292. regularly crossing

  1293. paths with people

  1294. living in the domain

  1295. of darkness.

1296. And we are to be

  1297. wearing Christ-like

  1298. clothing.

  1299. That's making the

  1300. best use of the

  1301. time.

  1302. That's redeeming

  1303. the time.

  1304. Think about it

  1305. this way.

  1306. If you're within

  1307. eyeshot of a

  1308. non-Christian,

  1309. the way you live

  1310. in your life,

  1311. that non-Christian

  1312. will likely think

  1313. two things about

  1314. you, if they know

  1315. you're a Christian.

  1316. He's not perfect,

  1317. but he's also

  1318. different.

  1319. not perfect,

  1320. but different.

  1321. And you know

  1322. what God is doing

  1323. when that happens?

  1324. He's opening

  1325. a door.

  1326. He's using

  1327. your grace

  1328. transformed

  1329. life

  1330. to open

  1331. a door.

  1332. That's what

  1333. he's doing.

  1334. People wonder

  1335. why you don't

  1336. look at porn

  1337. anymore.

  1338. Because of

  1339. something he

  1340. has done.

  1341. Why I don't

  1342. cuss anymore?

  1343. Why I don't

  1344. lie anymore?

  1345. Why I don't

  1346. misrepresent

  1347. myself?

  1348. It's something

  1349. he has done.

  1350. It's making

  1351. the best use

  1352. of the time.

  1353. It's doing

  1354. what we would

  1355. normally do

  1356. anyway.

  1357. Just live

  1358. for Jesus.

  1359. peace.

  1360. And when

  1361. he gives

  1362. you those

  1363. open doors,

  1364. do you know

  1365. what you do?

  1366. You tell.

  1367. Show and

  1368. tell.

  1369. The show

  1370. is a life

  1371. transformed

  1372. by the grace

  1373. of God

  1374. in Christ

  1375. Jesus.

  1376. And the

  1377. tell

  1378. is Christ

  1379. Jesus.

  1380. Verse 6,

  1381. let your

  1382. speech

  1383. always be

  1384. gracious,

  1385. seasoned with

  1386. salt so

  1387. that you

  1388. may know

  1389. how you

  1390. ought to

  1391. answer each

  1392. person.

  1393. You know,

  1394. you put salt

  1395. on stuff

  1396. to give it

  1397. flavor,

  1398. right?

  1399. And so in

  1400. our conversation

  1401. with other

  1402. people,

  1403. we're putting

  1404. a little

  1405. Jesus salt

  1406. on things.

  1407. We're talking

  1408. about Jesus.

  1409. You know

  1410. what?

  1411. Brothers and

  1412. sisters,

  1413. drop his

  1414. name.

  1415. Drop his

  1416. name in a

  1417. conversation.

  1418. put a stake

  1419. in the

  1420. ground,

  1421. drop his

  1422. name,

  1423. that you're

  1424. a follower

  1425. of Jesus.

  1426. Make it

  1427. known.

  1428. Season

  1429. your speech

  1430. with grace

  1431. and the

  1432. greatest

  1433. demonstration

  1434. of God's

  1435. grace is

  1436. Jesus.

  1437. God's

  1438. riches at

  1439. Christ's

  1440. expense.

  1441. You can

  1442. do it,

  1443. especially

  1444. when he's

  1445. your greatest

  1446. treasure.

  1447. You've

  1448. heard of

  1449. something

  1450. that's

  1451. savory

  1452. before.

  1453. Think of

  1454. your speech

  1455. as

  1456. savory,

  1457. Jesus-y,

  1458. Christ-y

  1459. speech.

  1460. Someone

  1461. asks you,

  1462. hey,

  1463. why don't

  1464. you be

  1465. a jerk

  1466. like everybody

  1467. else to

  1468. this fellow

  1469. coworker?

  1470. Like,

  1471. I don't do

  1472. that anymore

  1473. because I'm

  1474. a follower

  1475. of Jesus.

  1476. Done.

  1477. Done.

  1478. God will

  1479. do with it

  1480. as he

  1481. pleases.

  1482. Name

  1483. drop Jesus,

  1484. brothers and

  1485. sisters.

  1486. Name

  1487. drop him.

  1488. Make your

  1489. speech

  1490. savory.

  1491. So that

  1492. you may

  1493. know how

  1494. you ought

  1495. to answer

  1496. each person.

  1497. That ought

  1498. is the same

  1499. word that we

  1500. saw in

  1501. verse 4.

  1502. It's a

  1503. must.

  1504. It's like

  1505. this.

  1506. Someone sees

  1507. your life,

  1508. it's changing,

  1509. and they're

  1510. like,

  1511. why are you

  1512. like that?

  1513. And you're

  1514. like,

  1515. well,

  1516. that's how

  1517. I was

  1518. raised.

  1519. It's not

  1520. true.

  1521. Give credit

  1522. to where

  1523. credit's due.

  1524. That it's the

  1525. grace of

  1526. Jesus Christ

  1527. changing you.

  1528. Give credit

  1529. to where

  1530. credit's due.

  1531. That's the

  1532. must.

  1533. I can't

  1534. let you

  1535. think that

  1536. this life

  1537. is something

  1538. that I've

  1539. done.

  1540. it's

  1541. something

  1542. that he's

  1543. doing.

  1544. Give credit

  1545. to where

  1546. credit's due.

  1547. Name

  1548. drop them.

  1549. And did

  1550. you notice

  1551. this is

  1552. word and

  1553. deed?

  1554. Check it

  1555. out.

  1556. 317.

  1557. And whatever

  1558. you do,

  1559. in word or

  1560. deed,

  1561. do everything

  1562. in the name

  1563. of the Lord

  1564. Jesus Christ,

  1565. giving thanks

  1566. to God the

  1567. Father through

  1568. him,

  1569. even in

  1570. your

  1571. relationships

  1572. with non-Christians.

  1573. do everything

  1574. in the name

  1575. of the Lord

  1576. Jesus Christ.

  1577. Name drop

  1578. them.

  1579. Show and

  1580. tell.

  1581. Okay,

  1582. gang.

  1583. I think

  1584. we've missed

  1585. enough witnessing

  1586. opportunities.

  1587. What do you

  1588. think?

  1589. Let's

  1590. change

  1591. course.

  1592. Let's

  1593. treasure

  1594. Jesus

  1595. above all

  1596. else.

  1597. Let's

  1598. pray for

  1599. open doors

  1600. so that

  1601. we can

  1602. speak of

  1603. our

  1604. treasure

  1605. and let's

  1606. show and

  1607. tell our

  1608. treasure.

  1609. With

  1610. life

  1611. transformed,

  1612. being

  1613. transformed by

  1614. the grace

  1615. of Jesus,

  1616. we just

  1617. give credit

  1618. to where

  1619. credit's due.

  1620. This

  1621. summer,

  1622. let's

  1623. take the

  1624. witnessing

  1625. opportunity

  1626. God gives

  1627. us.

  1628. And

  1629. wouldn't

  1630. it be

  1631. wonderful?

  1632. And

  1633. wouldn't

  1634. it be

  1635. wonderful?

  1636. Wouldn't

  1637. it be just

  1638. a great

  1639. cause of

  1640. thanksgiving

  1641. and rejoicing

  1642. that come

  1643. September and

  1644. October,

  1645. Lord willing,

  1646. if he should

  1647. tarry,

  1648. there are

  1649. more people

  1650. in the

  1651. sanctuary.

  1652. That in

  1653. June,

  1654. they were

  1655. in the

  1656. domain of

  1657. darkness,

  1658. and come

  1659. September,

  1660. they've been

  1661. transferred into

  1662. the kingdom

  1663. of the

  1664. beloved

  1665. son,

  1666. because

  1667. God opened

  1668. doors for

  1669. us,

  1670. and we

  1671. took

  1672. them.

  1673. Not to

  1674. us,

  1675. O Lord,

  1676. not to

  1677. us,

  1678. but to

  1679. your name

  1680. give glory

  1681. because of

  1682. your steadfast

  1683. love and

  1684. faithfulness.

  1685. Brothers and

  1686. sisters,

  1687. we get to

  1688. join in

  1689. what Jesus

  1690. is doing

  1691. in our

  1692. city.

  1693. Let's pray

  1694. together.

  1695. Father,

  1696. would you

  1697. pour out

  1698. your

  1699. spirit

  1700. upon

  1701. us,

  1702. Christ the

  1703. King

  1704. Church,

  1705. and not

  1706. just a

  1707. little bit,

  1708. a lot,

  1709. full pouring

  1710. out of your

  1711. spirit upon

  1712. us,

  1713. that you

  1714. would embolden

  1715. us,

  1716. that we

  1717. would preach

  1718. Christ clearly

  1719. and courageously.

  1720. Father,

  1721. would you

  1722. open doors

  1723. for the

  1724. gospel in

  1725. our lives,

  1726. both individually

  1727. and corporately,

  1728. and would you

  1729. add to our

  1730. number through

  1731. conversion?

  1732. Would you

  1733. bring about

  1734. more

  1735. worshipers

  1736. for those

  1737. people that

  1738. we so long

  1739. to worship

  1740. you?

  1741. Father,

  1742. we look to

  1743. you for

  1744. this.

  1745. We confess

  1746. our distractions,

  1747. we confess

  1748. our fears,

  1749. we confess

  1750. our lack of

  1751. being able

  1752. to articulate

  1753. the gospel

  1754. in helpful

  1755. ways.

  1756. God,

  1757. but above

  1758. all,

  1759. we confess,

  1760. we treasure

  1761. Jesus little.

  1762. Would you

  1763. stir our

  1764. hearts,

  1765. and would

  1766. you cause

  1767. us to see

  1768. him for

  1769. who he is

  1770. and what

  1771. he's done,

  1772. and that,

  1773. God,

  1774. you would

  1775. burden us,

  1776. and that we

  1777. would speak of

  1778. treasure,

  1779. Jesus' treasure,

  1780. all summer

  1781. long.

  1782. It's your name

  1783. we pray.

  1784. Amen.
