  1. Good morning to you all. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this ongoing series on the book of Judges.

  2. I'm grateful to be able to speak this morning. Last week, Zach spoke on Abimelech in Judges chapter 9.

    Judges 9 chapter mention

  3. And this morning, our task is Jephthah in chapters 10 through 12.

  4. So that's about two and a half chapters. We'll skip along and make our way through it somewhat quickly.

  5. Would you turn there in your Bibles, Judges chapter 10 verse 6.

    Judges 10:6

  6. You can navigate there on your phone or if you're using the Pew Bible in front of you, it's on page 249.

  7. We're going to start in Judges 10 chapter 6.

  8. One of the things that we've seen in this series so far is something that Mike showed us right in the very first sermon about this cycle that keeps repeating in the book.

  9. You can see that there's, at least on this diagram, seven steps to the cycle.

  10. And it just keeps repeating as we go through each judge.

  11. In number four, the people cry out.

  12. In number five, God empowers a judge and he goes out and defeats the enemy.

  13. And then that brings relief.

  14. And in number six, there's peace in the land.

  15. But the problem is this pattern isn't static in the book.

  16. Each time the judge defeats the enemy and the land goes back to rest,

  17. the people return to their sin in a worse way than they were before.

  18. So the sin keeps getting worse and they keep becoming more and more like the Canaanites.

  19. And their repentance becomes less serious each time they get back around to number four.

  20. And there are more and more innocent victims caught up in the machinery of sin and chaos.

  21. Last week, Zach talked about the people of Shechem who are slaughtered along with countless women who are just completely innocent.

  22. So it's not really like a wheel that just keeps rolling down the road in a static way.

  23. It's more like a drain that is emptying.

  24. It's like a drain that's circling.

  25. And it just keeps getting lower and lower.

  26. Everything is degenerating in the nation.

  27. As we're getting to see what it looks like when people reject God and when they draw away from him.

  28. The people of Israel are getting worse and the judges are getting worse.

  29. The judges are personifications of the sin of the nation.

  30. So the first judge, Othniel, pretty good guy.

  31. Very straightforward.

  32. He just goes out and saves Israel.

  33. The second judge, Ehud, he saves Israel.

  34. But it's not quite as clean because he uses deception.

  35. And remember, he plunges the dagger into the fat king.

  36. Then you have Barak.

  37. He saved Israel too.

  38. But it's even messier because now he goes to Deborah.

  39. And he says, I'm not going if you don't go.

  40. And she says, okay.

  41. But then, you know, the victory is going to be given into the hands of a woman.

  42. So it's just a little bit more messy.

  43. Then we get to Gideon.

  44. He lacked faith.

  45. And that story ended up in idol worship.

  46. And then his son Abimelech comes up.

  47. He's not even a judge.

  48. But he becomes the king.

  49. And he puts himself in power.

  50. And then he's killing not Canaanites but Israelites.

  51. And now we come to Jephthah.

  52. And if this pattern holds in the book, we expect Jephthah to be the worst judge yet.

  53. And he is.

  54. This is a story that focuses on the consequences of bad leadership among the people of God.

  55. And maybe you're saying, oh, good.

  56. Well, I'm not a leader.

  57. So this doesn't have anything to do with me.

  58. I can just sort of check out.

  59. But leaders are not just simply those that have titles.

  60. But those who have some kind of influence over other people.

  61. Some leaders do have official titles like pastor, elder, deacon.

  62. Parents are the leaders of their children.

  63. Some leaders don't have any kind of a title.

  64. But even kids can be leaders, right?

  65. Every elementary school teacher knows that it only takes one kid to wreck your year.

  66. Right?

  67. In some ways, all of us lead at different times.

  68. And so this story does concern all of us.

  69. Last year, Forbes Media Company, you know, they've got a magazine and a website.

  70. Forbes Media Company published an article titled,

  71. Courageous Leadership Style, Is It Harming or Nurturing Your Company?

  72. Is Your Leadership Style Harming the Company?

  73. Or is it making it stronger?

  74. And this is what the article says.

  75. The leader you are has a ripple effect that radiates through your business and your employees

  76. into the market and to your customers, vendors, and stakeholders.

  77. It can go even further than this.

  78. It is highly contagious.

  79. Whether you like it or not, you are either spreading rainbows

  80. or spreading thunderstorms, and sometimes both.

  81. Leaders are in a position of influence to either bring great good

  82. to the people that look up to them or great harm.

  83. And we're going to see that Jephthah causes great harm,

  84. and that is going to serve as an important negative example for us.

  85. So let's look at the story of Jephthah,

  86. and we're going to draw some conclusions at the end

  87. about leadership in the church and in our personal lives.

  88. The story unfolds in five scenes.

  89. The Lord withdraws.

  90. Number one, the Lord withdraws.

  91. Number two, Israel recruits Jephthah.

  92. Number three, Jephthah's war against the Ammonites.

  93. Number four, Jephthah's evil vow.

  94. And number five, Jephthah's war with Israelites.

  95. Oops.

  96. Yeah, so we're going to move pretty quickly through these

  97. and just hit the high points.

  98. And I'd like to ask you to just follow along with me in your Bible.

  99. We're going to kind of announce the verses as we go.

  100. And so here we go.

  101. Scene number one, if you're taking notes, this is in 10, 6 to 16.

  102. Chapter 10, verse 6 to 16.

  103. Scene one, the Lord withdraws.

  104. Now our passage begins in verse 6 with the most detailed description yet

  105. of sin and idolatry among the people of Israel.

  106. In the Othniel story, back at the very beginning,

  107. they served the Baals and the Asherahs.

  108. And that was bad.

  109. But now, it says in verse 6 and 7,

  110. they served the Baals and the Ashtaroth

  111. and the gods of Syria and the gods of Sidon

  112. and the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites,

  113. the gods of the Philistines,

  114. and they forsook the Lord and did not serve him.

  115. So they are just covering their bases.

  116. From the compass all the way around,

  117. north, south, east, and west,

  118. all the surrounding peoples are just gathering their gods in

  119. and worshiping them and forsaking the Lord.

  120. And now, because of their sin,

  121. look at what it says in verses 7 and 8,

  122. he sold them into the hand of the Philistines

  123. and into the hand of the Ammonites,

  124. and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel.

  125. For 18 years, they oppressed all the people of Israel

  126. so that Israel was severely distressed.

  127. 18 years of military and political oppression by these enemies.

  128. So, verse 9,

  129. the Israelites cry out to the Lord,

  130. and it sounds pretty good.

  131. We have sinned against you

  132. because we have forsaken our God and served the Baals.

  133. That seems like pretty straightforward confession.

  134. But surprisingly, this time,

  135. because now we're in Judges chapter 10,

    Judges 10 chapter mention

  136. this time, the Lord does not take their repentance very seriously.

  137. You know, as a rule in the Bible,

  138. the Lord is so eager to show mercy and forgiveness.

  139. He is just primed for grace.

  140. He is a God gracious and compassionate.

  141. It only takes a hint of repentance,

  142. and God's like, okay, I won't punish you.

  143. But here, he becomes angry and even sarcastic.

  144. He says,

  145. Did I not save you from the Egyptians

  146. and from the Amorites,

  147. from the Ammonites and the Philistines before?

  148. Haven't we been here before?

  149. We've done this before.

  150. I am a God of mercy,

  151. but I will not be taken advantage of.

  152. There is a limit, right, to God's mercy.

  153. And now that the cycle has repeated itself

  154. one, two, three, four, five times,

  155. he's done.

  156. He's out.

  157. God's going to sit this one out

  158. and just watch

  159. while the people continue to be afflicted.

  160. And he says at the end of verse 13,

  161. I will save you no more.

  162. Go and cry out to the other gods

  163. that you've chosen

  164. and let them save you

  165. in the time of your distress.

  166. So the Israelites try to negotiate with God.

  167. They say,

  168. We have sinned.

  169. Do to us whatever seems good to you.

  170. Only deliver us this day.

  171. Right?

  172. That sounds good.

  173. It sounds like they're finally submitting to him

  174. and that this time they're really sorry.

  175. But it's manipulative.

  176. The problem exists

  177. not because God isn't doing

  178. what seems good to him,

  179. but because he is.

  180. This is judgment.

  181. And then unbelievably,

  182. in verse 16,

  183. they remove their foreign gods.

  184. Which means that they had not done so up until now,

  185. even though previously they had confessed

  186. and repented of their sin.

  187. So in verse 10,

  188. they confess their sin,

  189. but they didn't actually get rid of anything

  190. because they're doing that now.

  191. And so it says at the end of verse 16,

  192. and God became impatient

  193. over the misery of Israel.

  194. He's frustrated.

  195. He's impatient with their half-hearted,

  196. half-baked repentance.

  197. He's out this time,

  198. and they can deal with this problem on their own.

  199. And now for the rest of the story,

  200. with one exception,

  201. God is absent.

  202. So we're going to get to see

  203. what it looks like

  204. when people just kind of make things up as they go.

  205. They're still being attacked by their enemies,

  206. and so now it's time for Israel

  207. to develop a strategic plan.

  208. It's time to set some goals.

  209. It's time to find the headhunter

  210. and do some recruiting

  211. and clarify their vision and purpose statements

  212. and get some new leadership.

  213. And that brings us to scene two,

  214. which is chapter 10, verse 17 to 11.

  215. Chapter two,

  216. Israel recruits Jephthah.

  217. Now the Ammonites are on the move against Israel,

  218. so the Israelites scramble to find a leader.

  219. In previous episodes in the book,

  220. the Lord has raised up the deliverer, right?

  221. He's the one that raised up Othniel

  222. and raised up Jephthah,

  223. but now he's checked out,

  224. and so they're going to have to go on their own.

  225. And so they say in verse 18,

  226. who is the man

  227. who will begin to fight against the Ammonites?

  228. He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

  229. And in verses 1 through 3 of chapter 11,

  230. we're introduced to Jephthah.

  231. Number one,

  232. we learn that he's a warrior,

  233. so it makes sense

  234. that he would be the one to go out

  235. and lead the troops.

  236. Number two,

  237. we learn that he's the son of a prostitute,

  238. and therefore he's not a rightful heir of the family,

  239. and he's not really even a full member of the family.

  240. And so his brothers drive him out of the home,

  241. and they say in chapter 11, verse 2,

  242. you shall not have an inheritance in our father's house,

  243. for you are the son of another woman.

  244. And so he runs away,

  245. and he joins a gang of worthless fellows.

  246. It says in verse 3,

  247. this term worthless fellows

  248. is the same word that describes Abimelech's hoodlums

  249. back in chapter 9

  250. that helped him kill his 70 brothers.

  251. They're scoundrels.

  252. These are worthless guys that are up to no good.

  253. So it's probably a reflection on Jephthah

  254. because that's who he's hanging out with.

  255. So, so far,

  256. nothing about Jephthah

  257. gives us any confidence

  258. that he is going to be the right kind of leader.

  259. But hey,

  260. he's a good warrior,

  261. so he's going to get the job done,

  262. and that's what they need.

  263. So when the Ammonites attack,

  264. they go to recruit him,

  265. and this is why the background

  266. in verses 1 through 3 of chapter 11

  267. is important.

  268. It tells us

  269. that the people of Gilead

  270. have already kicked him out

  271. because he's a,

  272. he's kind of a reject,

  273. and he doesn't belong to the family,

  274. and,

  275. but now they come groveling to him.

  276. Not because he's suddenly of good character,

  277. but because they need someone

  278. to lead them into battle.

  279. And so he agrees,

  280. and they make it official.

  281. And that's scene 2.

  282. The Lord has checked out.

  283. They're on their own.

  284. But instead of doing what it takes

  285. to make things right with God,

  286. instead of properly submitting themselves

  287. to God and really repenting this time

  288. to fix that relationship,

  289. they just raise up their own deliverer

  290. to fight for them.

  291. And he may be a scoundrel,

  292. and he may be surrounded by scoundrels.

  293. He may not really be leadership material.

  294. He's opportunistic,

  295. and he's self-serving.

  296. He agrees to work for them

  297. so that he can be their boss at the end.

  298. There's no indication

  299. that he has any of the right motivations.

  300. But the Ammonites are attacking,

  301. so what do you do?

  302. Scene 3.

  303. Okay, here's scene 3,

  304. chapter 11, verses 12 to 28.

  305. Jephthah's war with the Ammonites.

  306. In chapter 11, verse 12, it says,

  307. Then Jephthah sent messengers

  308. to the king of the Ammonites and said,

  309. What do you have against me

  310. that you have come to me

  311. to fight against my land?

  312. Well, this is a curious way to start

  313. for a couple of reasons.

  314. First of all, notice here

  315. how he is elevating himself.

  316. Why have you come against me?

  317. You've come to me

  318. to fight against my land.

  319. That's interesting self-centeredness.

  320. It's also strange

  321. that he's trying to negotiate

  322. with the enemy

  323. instead of destroying them.

  324. That's not typically

  325. how things happen

  326. in the book of Judges.

  327. And he doesn't show any awareness

  328. that the Ammonites have come

  329. to attack as judgment from God

  330. that God has sent them.

  331. It's like he's just kind of

  332. starting from scratch here

  333. with these negotiations.

  334. But he'll give peace a chance.

  335. He'll see if he can

  336. talk himself out of this one.

  337. And what follows

  338. in verses 13 to 27

  339. is a prolonged negotiation

  340. with multiple sets of messengers

  341. back and forth

  342. between the Ammonites and Jephthah.

  343. And in verse 13,

  344. the Ammonites say,

  345. Well, it's a land dispute.

  346. And then in verse 15,

  347. Jephthah says,

  348. We haven't taken your land.

  349. And then in verses 16 to 22,

  350. Jephthah recounts Israel's history

  351. and he says in verse 26,

  352. Look, you've had 300 years

  353. to come and take back this land.

  354. Don't bother me with it now.

  355. And finally,

  356. finally the Ammonites send word

  357. that the negotiations are over.

  358. They're just not going to deal.

  359. And it says in verse 28,

  360. But the king of the Ammonites

  361. did not listen to the words of Jephthah

  362. that he had sent to him.

  363. This is all crazy.

  364. This is not what happens

  365. in the book of Jephthah.

  366. The deliverer goes out

  367. in the power of the Spirit of God

  368. and slaughters the enemy.

  369. And Jephthah's just sort of like

  370. having these long negotiations

  371. about land disputes.

  372. And in fact,

  373. if you count the words

  374. in the original Hebrew,

  375. Jephthah's negotiations

  376. with the Ammonites

  377. are 390 words long.

  378. But the entire story

  379. to this point

  380. has only been 278 words.

  381. So he's just talking

  382. and talking and talking

  383. and the messengers

  384. go back and forth.

  385. Jephthah is really trying

  386. diplomacy here.

  387. But it doesn't work.

  388. They're coming anyway.

  389. You know,

  390. this is what

  391. the headhunter

  392. found Jephthah for.

  393. This was his

  394. big employment contract

  395. to run the show.

  396. He's a leader.

  397. He's a big man.

  398. He's going to get it done.

  399. But compared to the early judges

  400. like Othniel and Ehid,

  401. this is pretty lame.

  402. What is he negotiating here?

  403. But he's going to have

  404. to go to war.

  405. All right, scene 4.

  406. This is chapter 11,

  407. verses 29 to 40.

  408. Scene 4.

  409. This is Jephthah's evil vow.

  410. Here we come to kind of

  411. the climax of the story.

  412. In verse 29,

  413. there's a surprise

  414. that as Jephthah goes out

  415. to fight against the Ammonites,

  416. the Holy Spirit

  417. comes to empower him.

  418. That's a little bit

  419. of a surprise

  420. because it turns out

  421. God is not entirely checked out.

  422. This sounds a little bit more

  423. like the pattern

  424. in the book of Judges.

  425. At this crucial moment,

  426. God steps in

  427. and he is willing

  428. to empower Jephthah

  429. to have victory here.

  430. And yet,

  431. Jephthah

  432. can't

  433. stop

  434. negotiating.

  435. He just can't

  436. stop negotiating.

  437. And so he makes

  438. a vow to the Lord.

  439. Look at verse 30.

  440. Jephthah made a vow

  441. to the Lord and said,

  442. If you will give

  443. the Ammonites

  444. into my hand,

  445. then whatever comes

  446. out from the doors

  447. of my house

  448. to meet me

  449. when I return

  450. in peace from the Ammonites

  451. shall be the Lord's

  452. and I will offer it up

  453. as a burnt offering.

  454. I mean,

  455. first of all,

  456. he does not need

  457. to make this vow.

  458. We've already been told

  459. that the Holy Spirit

  460. is upon him

  461. to empower him

  462. to victory.

  463. So this is completely

  464. extraneous.

  465. But he's still

  466. trying to do things

  467. his way.

  468. He's still trying

  469. to manipulate God

  470. further

  471. to force the issue

  472. to try to find

  473. a way to get God

  474. onto his side

  475. even more.

  476. And so he vows

  477. that when he gets home

  478. from the battle,

  479. whatever comes out

  480. of his house,

  481. he will kill

  482. that thing,

  483. that person,

  484. that animal

  485. and offer it up

  486. as a burnt offering.

  487. That does raise

  488. the question,

  489. what is he expecting here?

  490. What does he think

  491. will come out

  492. of his house?

  493. Well,

  494. this is an artist's

  495. reconstruction

  496. from archaeology

  497. of an ancient

  498. Israelite home.

  499. And you can see here

  500. that it was very often

  501. that the animals

  502. did live inside the house,

  503. you know,

  504. cows and chickens

  505. and goats

  506. and things like that.

  507. And the people

  508. slept upstairs

  509. and so on cool nights

  510. the warmth

  511. from the animal,

  512. and probably their smells too,

  513. would waft up

  514. and keep the people

  515. warm up

  516. on the second floor.

  517. So I suppose

  518. it is possible

  519. that Jephthah

  520. is just being

  521. completely foolish here

  522. and he's thinking

  523. to himself,

  524. well,

  525. maybe an animal

  526. will come out

  527. and I will,

  528. there's a young goat

  529. and I will sacrifice

  530. it to the Lord.

  531. But I actually think

  532. that he has in mind

  533. a person,

  534. a member of his family

  535. and I've got three reasons

  536. for thinking that.

  537. Number one,

  538. in the structure

  539. of the book,

  540. we expect him

  541. to be worse

  542. than Abimelech

  543. and worse

  544. than Gideon

  545. and those are bad guys.

  546. Number two,

  547. this gift to God

  548. would have to be

  549. extravagant

  550. because he is trying

  551. to force God

  552. to help him

  553. even though God

  554. already said he would.

  555. And number three,

  556. there are other

  557. biblical texts

  558. and there are actually

  559. other extra-biblical texts

  560. that describe

  561. exactly this,

  562. extraordinary,

  563. painful,

  564. human sacrifice

  565. as a statement

  566. of serious devotion

  567. to a God

  568. to try and get that God

  569. to do what you want him

  570. to do.

  571. Well, maybe you object

  572. and you say,

  573. well, surely not.

  574. Surely,

  575. Jephthah doesn't intend

  576. human sacrifice.

  577. Certainly,

  578. human sacrifice

  579. isn't in view here.

  580. How could Jephthah

  581. mean that?

  582. But I think

  583. that is exactly

  584. the point.

  585. Jephthah either

  586. doesn't know

  587. or doesn't care

  588. what God has said

  589. about human sacrifice

  590. in his word.

  591. He is being

  592. completely reckless here.

  593. It's a reckless vow.

  594. He's intending here

  595. to make God

  596. an offer

  597. that he can't refuse.

  598. And this is what happens

  599. when a leader

  600. is not submitting

  601. to God

  602. and just makes things up

  603. as he goes along.

  604. Now,

  605. Jephthah goes out

  606. to war

  607. against the Ammonites

  608. and the narrator

  609. doesn't care too much

  610. about this battle.

  611. It's not that important

  612. to him

  613. and so he sums

  614. the whole thing up

  615. in verse 33.

  616. He struck them

  617. from Aror

  618. to the neighborhood

  619. of Minith,

  620. 20 cities

  621. and as far as

  622. Ebo-Kerimim

  623. with a great blow.

  624. Okay,

  625. all you need to know

  626. is that Jephthah

  627. won that battle.

  628. All the details

  629. are not important.

  630. The focus here

  631. is on what happens

  632. when Jephthah

  633. gets home.

  634. It says

  635. in verse 34,

  636. then after the battle

  637. Jephthah came

  638. to his home

  639. at Mizpah

  640. and behold

  641. his daughter

  642. came out

  643. to meet him

  644. with tambourines

  645. and with dances.

  646. She was his only child.

  647. Besides her

  648. he had neither son

  649. nor daughter.

  650. And now

  651. the great negotiator

  652. has found himself

  653. in a trap

  654. of his own making.

  655. It wasn't his second cousin

  656. that came out

  657. of the house.

  658. It wasn't his uncle.

  659. It wasn't his wife.

  660. It was his only daughter.

  661. And in her innocence

  662. she comes out

  663. of the house

  664. singing and dancing

  665. to celebrate

  666. her father's victory

  667. in battle.

  668. And it says

  669. in verse 35,

  670. as soon as he saw her

  671. he tore his clothes

  672. and said,

  673. Alas,

  674. my daughter,

  675. you have brought me

  676. very low

  677. and you have become

  678. the cause of great trouble

  679. to me

  680. for I have opened

  681. my mouth to the Lord

  682. and I cannot take back

  683. my vow.

  684. Well,

  685. it sounds a little bit

  686. like he's blaming her.

  687. You have brought me

  688. very low.

  689. You have become

  690. the cause of my sorrow.

  691. But in verse 39

  692. it says,

  693. At the end of two months

  694. she returned to her father

  695. who did with her

  696. according to his vow

  697. that he had made.

  698. She had never known

  699. a man.

  700. So he did kill her

  701. and he did offer her up

  702. as a burnt offering

  703. to the Lord

  704. and it's important

  705. that she had never

  706. known a man

  707. because that means

  708. he did not have

  709. a grandchild

  710. and that means

  711. his family line

  712. is dead.

  713. So it's a tragedy

  714. but it's not just

  715. a tragedy.

  716. It's a tragedy

  717. filled with irony.

  718. She is coming out

  719. to celebrate

  720. her father's victory

  721. but it only causes

  722. her own death.

  723. She is making music

  724. and dancing

  725. to celebrate

  726. but it brings

  727. her father grief.

  728. Jephthah,

  729. because he was

  730. the son of a prostitute,

  731. had been thrown

  732. out of his own

  733. family home

  734. and now a child

  735. has come out

  736. of his home.

  737. He had no share

  738. in his father's

  739. inheritance

  740. and now his own

  741. family line

  742. has come to an end.

  743. His daughter

  744. will die

  745. a virgin

  746. and she does.

  747. Jephthah had meant

  748. to secure victory

  749. in the present

  750. but it cost him

  751. his future.

  752. This is what it

  753. looks like

  754. when leaders

  755. wing it,

  756. when they are

  757. so detached

  758. from the character

  759. and the word

  760. and the will

  761. and the wisdom

  762. of God

  763. that they just

  764. wing it

  765. and they just

  766. make it up

  767. as they go,

  768. it ends in

  769. disaster,

  770. even personal

  771. disaster

  772. for Jephthah.

  773. Jephthah has

  774. damaged himself

  775. and his innocent

  776. daughter has been

  777. swept up in the mess

  778. that he created

  779. and has become

  780. a victim

  781. and unfortunately

  782. this is not

  783. the last one,

  784. it's not the first,

  785. or the last

  786. innocent woman

  787. in this book

  788. that is going

  789. to be sacrificed

  790. as victims

  791. by ignorant,

  792. evil,

  793. Israelite men

  794. who are becoming

  795. more and more

  796. like the Canaanites

  797. around them.

  798. Scene 5,

  799. this is the last scene,

  800. this is in chapter 12,

  801. 1 to 7.

  802. Jephthah's war,

  803. not with the Ammonites,

  804. but with the Israelites.

  805. This story just keeps

  806. getting crazier

  807. and crazier.

  808. Jephthah has just

  809. killed his only daughter

  810. and now he's going

  811. to have more trouble

  812. on his hands

  813. because soldiers

  814. from the neighboring

  815. Israelite tribe

  816. of Ephraim

  817. are angry.

  818. Now these are Israelites.

  819. Look at chapter 12,

  820. verse 1.

  821. The men of Ephraim

  822. said to Jephthah,

  823. why did you cross over

  824. to fight against

  825. the Ammonites

  826. and did not call us

  827. to go with you?

  828. We will burn your house

  829. over you

  830. with fire.

  831. Interestingly,

  832. this is another occurrence

  833. of the word house,

  834. right?

  835. He had been kicked

  836. out of his house

  837. and his daughter

  838. came out of his house

  839. and now the Ephraimites

  840. are going to burn down

  841. his house

  842. because they're so mad.

  843. And look what Jephthah says

  844. in verses 2 and 3

  845. of chapter 12.

  846. And as I read this,

  847. listen to all the references

  848. to I and me

  849. and how self-centered he is.

  850. Jephthah said to them

  851. in verse 2,

  852. I and my people

  853. had a great dispute

  854. with the Ammonites

  855. and when I called you,

  856. you did not save me

  857. from their hand

  858. and when I saw

  859. that you would not save me,

  860. I took my life

  861. in my hand

  862. and crossed over

  863. against the Ammonites

  864. and the Lord gave them

  865. into my hand.

  866. Why then have you

  867. come up to me

  868. this day

  869. to fight against me?

  870. Boy,

  871. talk about a narcissist.

  872. Everything revolves

  873. around this guy,

  874. right?

  875. 13 references

  876. to himself

  877. in two verses.

  878. He is completely

  879. self-centered.

  880. It's all about

  881. his own power.

  882. But he's not going

  883. to take this insult

  884. from these neighboring

  885. Israelites

  886. and so he gathers

  887. his men

  888. and he goes to war

  889. against the Israelites

  890. in the Civil War

  891. and he strategically,

  892. he's good at this,

  893. he strategically

  894. cuts off their escape

  895. and then he identifies

  896. them by their Hebrew

  897. accent

  898. and kills them

  899. and actually

  900. the word in the

  901. original Hebrew

  902. is slaughter.

  903. He slaughters them.

  904. This is not

  905. typical warfare.

  906. This is not

  907. taking a strategic

  908. position on a hill.

  909. This is hunting

  910. down the Ephraimite

  911. tribe and slaughtering

  912. them and wiping

  913. them out.

  914. And in chapter 12

  915. verse 6

  916. it says that he

  917. killed 42,000

  918. of these Israelites

  919. from Ephraim.

  920. Now think about

  921. the comparison

  922. between that

  923. and what he had

  924. done with the

  925. Ammonites.

  926. With the Ammonites

  927. he negotiates,

  928. there's long

  929. negotiations,

  930. you know,

  931. 390 words.

  932. The battle's very

  933. simple and straightforward.

  934. It was probably

  935. a strategic victory.

  936. But here,

  937. against the Ephraimites,

  938. short negotiations,

  939. tempers flaring.

  940. Jephthah wins the battle

  941. but that's not good

  942. enough because he

  943. hunts them down

  944. and slaughters them.

  945. And the narrative,

  946. the story concludes

  947. in chapter 12

  948. verse 7.

  949. Jephthah led Israel

  950. six years,

  951. then Jephthah the

  952. Gileadite died

  953. and was buried

  954. in a town

  955. in Gilead.

  956. And what's

  957. interesting here

  958. is it does not

  959. say,

  960. as it has said

  961. earlier in the book,

  962. that the land

  963. had rest.

  964. What a mess.

  965. What an absolute

  966. disaster

  967. this has been.

  968. Okay,

  969. let's put all

  970. this together.

  971. We've got a lot

  972. of moving pieces

  973. here but let's

  974. put this together

  975. with six observations

  976. and then three

  977. aspects of application.

  978. Okay,

  979. we've got nine

  980. parts to go here,

  981. six observations

  982. and three aspects

  983. of application.

  984. These are going

  985. to go pretty quick.

  986. First of all,

  987. six observations

  988. of key details

  989. in this story.

  990. I just want to

  991. summarize where

  992. we've been.

  993. Observation number

  994. one,

  995. the proper application

  996. of the book of

  997. Judges is not

  998. the sin and

  999. leadership problems

  1000. in the United

  1001. States or in

  1002. your business.

  1003. Okay,

1004. I know some of us

  1005. are thinking like,

  1006. oh,

  1007. I know politicians

  1008. like that.

  1009. No,

  1010. the proper

  1011. application of

  1012. the book of

  1013. Judges is the

  1014. church because

  1015. this is about

  1016. the people of

  1017. God and in

  1018. the Old Testament

  1019. the people of

  1020. God were in

  1021. Israel in the

  1022. covenant relationship

  1023. with the Lord and

  1024. now the people of

  1025. God are located

  1026. in the church.

1027. So we need to be

  1028. thinking about the

  1029. church and our

  1030. own personal

  1031. spiritual lives.

  1032. Observation

  1033. number two,

  1034. the narrator is

  1035. very clear at the

  1036. beginning of the

  1037. story that God

  1038. checks out.

  1039. He wants us to

  1040. see all the

  1041. chaos and all

  1042. the selfishness

  1043. and all the

  1044. cruelty that

  1045. comes when people

  1046. just do whatever

  1047. they want without

  1048. submitting to God.

  1049. Observation

  1050. number three,

  1051. Jephthah is a

  1052. skilled leader.

  1053. He is pretty good

  1054. at what he does.

  1055. He's a warrior

  1056. and he does know

  1057. how to negotiate

  1058. and he does win

  1059. his battles.

  1060. And that blinds

  1061. the people to

  1062. his character

  1063. flaws.

  1064. See, that's the

  1065. temptation, right?

  1066. That is the central

  1067. temptation in this

  1068. story.

  1069. That the skill of

  1070. the leader and

  1071. his ability to get

  1072. things done is

  1073. what blinds people

  1074. to his character.

  1075. Observation

  1076. number four,

  1077. Jephthah is

  1078. motivated by

  1079. power.

  1080. He agrees to

  1081. lead because

  1082. they promise him

  1083. more authority.

  1084. Observation

  1085. number five,

  1086. Jephthah attempts

  1087. to solve

  1088. leadership problems

  1089. with purely

  1090. human strategies.

  1091. The fact that

  1092. God had empowered

  1093. him with his

  1094. Holy Spirit is

  1095. kind of beside the

  1096. point, isn't it?

  1097. I don't even know,

  1098. does that even

  1099. factor in?

  1100. I don't know.

  1101. purely human

  1102. strategies of

  1103. negotiating,

  1104. manipulating,

  1105. and harsh

  1106. vengeance.

  1107. Observation

  1108. number six,

  1109. the story ends

  1110. in disaster.

  1111. Jephthah has

  1112. killed his own

  1113. daughter,

  1114. his family line

  1115. is ended,

  1116. he has started

  1117. a civil war,

  1118. and he has

  1119. slaughtered 49,000

  1120. other Israelites.

  1121. You know,

  1122. when we consider

  1123. all the details

  1124. of this complex

  1125. story,

  1126. and we think

  1127. about its

  1128. relationship to

  1129. the rest of

  1130. the book of

  1131. Judges,

  1132. here is how I

  1133. would articulate

  1134. its point in

  1135. one sentence.

  1136. It's not rocket

  1137. science.

  1138. A leader of

  1139. God's people

  1140. who is not

  1141. led by God

  1142. causes great

  1143. harm.

  1144. But that's not

  1145. what leaders are

  1146. supposed to do.

  1147. Leaders are

  1148. supposed to do

  1149. the opposite

  1150. of that.

  1151. They're not

  1152. supposed to

  1153. bring great

  1154. harm,

  1155. they're supposed

  1156. to create an

  1157. environment for

  1158. flourishing and

  1159. health and

  1160. growth.

  1161. But unless the

  1162. leaders of God's

  1163. people are

  1164. themselves led

  1165. by God,

  1166. they bring

  1167. disaster and

  1168. pain and

  1169. trouble.

  1170. Now let's talk

  1171. about the

  1172. application of

  1173. this in three

  1174. aspects,

  1175. three groups,

  1176. in the church,

  1177. in the family,

  1178. in our personal

  1179. lives, three

  1180. groups, and

  1181. I'm going to

  1182. try and be

  1183. specific here

  1184. as I kind of

  1185. brainstorm this.

  1186. What does this

  1187. look like in

  1188. our lives?

  1189. Group number

  1190. one.

  1191. These are the

  1192. leaders that we

  1193. think of first

  1194. in the church.

  1195. These are the

  1196. leaders that have

  1197. official titles

  1198. like pastor,

  1199. elder, and

  1200. deacon.

  1201. God has placed

  1202. these leaders

  1203. over us for

  1204. our good.

  1205. They commit

  1206. themselves to

  1207. leading us in

  1208. our relationship

  1209. with the

  1210. Lord.

  1211. They sacrifice

  1212. their time.

  1213. They carry

  1214. our burdens.

  1215. They worry

  1216. about us.

  1217. They hear our

  1218. confession of

  1219. sin.

  1220. They visit us

  1221. when we are

  1222. sick.

  1223. They preach

  1224. and teach God's

  1225. word faithfully.

  1226. They create

  1227. opportunities for

  1228. us to grow in

  1229. our faith.

  1230. They have

  1231. incredible

  1232. potential to

  1233. strengthen our

  1234. faith and

  1235. redirect us,

  1236. and confront

  1237. us over sin

  1238. and teach us

  1239. what is right.

  1240. And I have

  1241. good news.

  1242. I have good

  1243. news.

  1244. Now that I've

  1245. stepped off the

  1246. elder team,

  1247. I can say this

  1248. without any

  1249. conflict of

  1250. interest.

  1251. We have

  1252. wonderful

  1253. pastors and

  1254. elders and

  1255. deacons at

  1256. this church.

  1257. They are the

  1258. real deal.

  1259. And I can tell

  1260. you that as

  1261. someone who's

  1262. been on the

  1263. inside.

  1264. They are

  1265. godly men

  1266. and women with

  1267. hearts that

  1268. seek after God

  1269. and we are

  1270. really, really

  1271. blessed here to

  1272. have these

  1273. people in

  1274. leadership over

  1275. us.

  1276. But if

  1277. pastors and

  1278. elders and

  1279. deacons are

  1280. not led by

  1281. God, it

  1282. is possible

  1283. to continue

  1284. in unrepentant

  1285. sin, to

  1286. lose confidence

  1287. in God's

  1288. word, to

  1289. seek after

  1290. power, to

  1291. mistreat

  1292. people, and

  1293. then to just

  1294. keep right on

  1295. going with

  1296. ministry.

  1297. You know

  1298. that's true.

  1299. You can be

  1300. the worst

  1301. person with

  1302. the worst

  1303. character, the

  1304. most godless

  1305. individual with

  1306. all of that

  1307. hidden sin, and

  1308. you can just

  1309. keep right on

  1310. rolling through

  1311. ministry.

  1312. It's very easy

  1313. to do.

  1314. There's a form

  1315. of ministry,

  1316. there's a form

  1317. of leadership,

  1318. it looks

  1319. Christian, it

  1320. sounds Christian,

  1321. but it's

  1322. lifeless and

  1323. godless.

  1324. There's no

  1325. spiritual power

  1326. in it because

  1327. no one is

  1328. actually listening

  1329. to God and

  1330. his word.

  1331. These leaders

  1332. talk about

  1333. him, they

  1334. refer to God,

  1335. all the usual

  1336. language is in

  1337. place.

  1338. On the surface

  1339. it looks like

  1340. spirit-empowered

  1341. ministry, but

  1342. they're really

  1343. just doing their

  1344. own thing.

  1345. They are leading

  1346. God's people, but

  1347. they themselves are

  1348. not being led by

  1349. God.

  1350. And here's the

  1351. catch, here's the

  1352. trick, and I think

1353. this comes up in the

  1354. story of Jephthah,

  1355. that ministry

  1356. might thrive.

  1357. the church

  1358. might grow,

  1359. the budget

  1360. might get

  1361. bigger, they

  1362. might have to

  1363. go out and

  1364. build a new

  1365. building because

  1366. it's getting

  1367. so big.

  1368. But all of

  1369. those gifts

  1370. of leadership

  1371. and networking

  1372. and communicating

  1373. clearly are

  1374. probably leading

  1375. the people of

  1376. God toward the

  1377. wrong thing.

  1378. and the gifting

  1379. and the skills

  1380. that they have

  1381. are only making

  1382. that leader

  1383. more

  1384. more

  1385. effective

  1386. at doing

  1387. damage.

  1388. Like Jephthah,

  1389. he was a skilled

  1390. leader, but he

  1391. brought disaster.

  1392. Let me ask you

  1393. this question.

  1394. Let's think

  1395. hypothetically

  1396. here.

  1397. Would Jephthah's

  1398. daughter have

  1399. been better

  1400. off under the

  1401. rule of the

  1402. Ammonites or in

  1403. her father's

  1404. house?

  1405. That's an easy

  1406. answer.

  1407. Here's another

  1408. question.

  1409. If you were an

  1410. Ephraimite,

  1411. who is the

  1412. bigger threat?

  1413. The foreign

  1414. pagan Ammonites

  1415. pastor or

  1416. Jephthah?

  1417. A pastor or

  1418. someone who has

  1419. an official

  1420. position of

  1421. authority at a

  1422. church who is

  1423. not led by God

  1424. has the potential

  1425. to do incredible

  1426. damage.

  1427. God is absent.

  1428. There is no

  1429. submission to his

  1430. word, but the

  1431. leaders just keep

  1432. on leading and

  1433. the ministry just

  1434. keeps on growing

  1435. until eventually it

  1436. crashes and burns.

  1437. And we've all

  1438. heard stories like

  1439. this.

  1440. It's tragic.

  1441. All right,

  1442. number two, let's

  1443. talk about a

  1444. second group, and

  1445. that is parents.

  1446. Parents, God has

  1447. placed us in

  1448. authority over our

  1449. children for their

  1450. good.

  1451. No one has the

  1452. ability to

  1453. influence our

  1454. children like we

  1455. do.

  1456. We are ingrained

  1457. in our children's

  1458. hearts and minds in

  1459. a way that can

  1460. never be replaced

  1461. by someone else.

  1462. We have incredible

  1463. power to help them

  1464. grow and develop

  1465. and thrive.

  1466. We can teach our

  1467. kids to be good

  1468. conversationalists and

1469. to have a variety of

  1470. interests and to do

1471. well in school and to

  1472. eat healthy and to

  1473. play sports and to

1474. set them up for a

  1475. successful life.

1476. We can give them a

  1477. sense of safety and

  1478. security and a

  1479. knowledge that they're

  1480. loved, and that is

  1481. just going to give

  1482. them a great

  1483. foundation for

  1484. launching off into

  1485. life.

  1486. And we, more than

  1487. anyone else, are in

  1488. an influential

  1489. position to point

  1490. them toward Jesus.

  1491. There's a reason that

  1492. God calls himself our

  1493. father.

1494. Because dads, we are a

1495. daily picture of God to

1496. our kids, and we can

  1497. help them love him.

1498. But listen, if we are

  1499. not ourselves led by

1500. God, we can be skilled

  1501. parents in many ways.

1502. But then we can use the

  1503. great influence that we

1504. have over our children to

  1505. destroy their faith.

  1506. The problem with Jephthah

1507. was not that he was

  1508. unskilled, it's that he

  1509. was skilled, and that

  1510. was why Israel chose

  1511. him.

  1512. The problem with Jephthah

  1513. was that he was

  1514. self-centered, interested

1515. only in power, he was

  1516. proud, and he was

  1517. harsh.

1518. And I'm just going to

  1519. speak to myself here.

1520. If we are not being led

1521. by God, parents, we can

  1522. do incredible damage to

  1523. our kids.

  1524. We can teach our

  1525. children that church is

  1526. not that important by

  1527. prioritizing other things

  1528. on a regular basis.

1529. We can teach our kids

  1530. that sins should be

  1531. hidden and ignored

1532. rather than be models of

  1533. confession, apology, and

  1534. repentance.

1535. We can teach our children

1536. to be cruel toward other

  1537. people when we ourselves

1538. laugh at what is wrong.

1539. we can give our kids

  1540. entertainment that is dark

  1541. and violent and impure

1542. and that will harden their

1543. hearts to the things of God.

1544. We can teach our kids that

  1545. God is untrustworthy and

  1546. unsafe when we are

  1547. unreliable and unfaithful

1548. faithful and harsh and when we

  1549. mistreat them.

1550. As parents, we are in

  1551. leadership over our kids.

1552. That has been given to us

1553. by God and they depend on us

1554. and they learn from us day

1555. after day in close quarters

1556. and it's impossible to fake

  1557. it.

1558. So we have to be dependent on

1559. the Lord and to be people of

1560. character who do things God's

  1561. way.

  1562. Finally, let's talk about a

1563. third group of leaders and

1564. here I'm going to cheat and

  1565. just include everyone.

  1566. Everyone has influence in

  1567. certain situations.

1568. It doesn't matter who you

  1569. are.

1570. There is someone who looks up

  1571. to you.

1572. There is someone who hopes

1573. that you will step up and

1574. take the lead in doing what is

  1575. right.

1576. God has given us to each

1577. other to lead in various

  1578. capacities and at different

1579. times and in different ways

  1580. for our good.

1581. And in the church and in our

1582. daily lives, we have the

1583. opportunity, all of us, to

1584. use that influence to benefit

1585. other people and to point

  1586. them toward the Lord.

1587. We have a responsibility to

  1588. use whatever influence and

1589. resources we have to make it

1590. easier for the people around

1591. us and in the household of

1592. faith to love and obey God

1593. and to make it harder for

  1594. them to become discouraged

1595. and to fall into sin.

1596. We can be leaders in

  1597. protecting the vulnerable and

1598. standing up for those who are

1599. weak and need extra support.

1600. Jephthah came from a difficult

  1601. background.

  1602. His mother was a

1603. prostitute and that meant that

1604. he was probably very poor.

1605. He had been rejected, probably

1606. socially, but certainly by his

  1607. family.

1608. But he had leadership ability

1609. and the problem was that

1610. instead of caring for the

1611. vulnerable and the poor, he

  1612. exploited them.

1613. He used his influence to secure

1614. his own power to increase his

1615. own power no matter what it

1616. cost the people around him.

  1617. teenagers.

1618. There are other kids your age who

  1619. look up to you.

1620. You have some kind of influence.

1621. There is a popularity system.

  1622. I know about it.

  1623. We know.

1624. There are other kids who look up

  1625. to you.

1626. What are you doing with that

  1627. influence?

1628. What are you doing with that

  1629. influence?

1630. Are you leading the way to

1631. stand up for the kid that

1632. everyone picks on and makes

  1633. fun of?

1634. Are you encouraging others in

1635. your school or in your youth

1636. group to do what is right?

1637. Or are you using your

  1638. influence, like Jephthah, to

1639. gain even more popularity no

1640. matter how much the people

  1641. around you get hurt?

1642. Actually, those are pretty good

  1643. questions for adults too.

1644. Because every time we walk

1645. into a room, we look around

1646. and we say, who here is

  1647. greater than I am?

1648. And who here is less than I

  1649. am?

1650. And how can I angle in order

1651. to influence, in order to

  1652. increase my influence and

  1653. power?

  1654. It's a constant temptation for

  1655. all of us.

1656. When people look up to us, that

1657. is a kind of power.

1658. And we should say to the Lord,

1659. Lord, this is a resource.

1660. What do you want me to, who do

1661. you want me to encourage?

1662. Who do you want me to

  1663. protect?

1664. Who do you want me to

  1665. confront?

1666. Who do you want me to

1667. organize so that we can all

  1668. serve you more effectively?

1669. How can I use the influence

1670. that I have, as small as it

1671. may be, in this family of

1672. faith and in my personal

1673. life in order to honor you?

1674. Or am I just using my own

1675. influence to just gain more

  1676. power?

1677. No matter who gets trampled in

  1678. the process.

1679. Now, let's just finish with

  1680. this, some good news.

1681. The Jephthah story is pretty

  1682. dark.

1683. But God is still there.

  1684. He is there.

1685. And as we watch the book of

  1686. Judges just disintegrate and

  1687. degenerate into moral disaster,

  1688. God is still there.

1689. He's still there in the

1690. background, no matter how much

1691. Israel sins and rejects God.

1692. In fact, it's about to get

  1693. worse.

1694. Samson is worse than Jephthah,

1695. and then after that, it really

  1696. gets dark.

1697. And yet, God is always there.

1698. And in fact, the worse things

1699. get in the book of Judges, the

1700. better God looks by comparison.

  1701. He is loving.

  1702. He is patient.

  1703. He is gentle.

  1704. He's forgiving.

1705. He leads us like a kind

  1706. shepherd.

1707. He lifts us up when we're weak

1708. and gives us strength instead

  1709. of exploiting us.

1710. And that is a model for us as

1711. we discern how we can use our

1712. influence in the lives of other

  1713. people.

1714. God is worthy of our trust, and

1715. it is important that we be led

  1716. by him.

1717. And then that we lead other

1718. people in a way that honors him

  1719. as well.

  1720. Let's pray.

1721. Father, thinking about all these

1722. things just reminds us again that

  1723. we need you.

1724. We need your Holy Spirit to empower

1725. us to do what is right, to point

1726. out our blind spots, to help us to

1727. see things in a new way.

1728. We know that the story of Jephthah

1729. is a negative example, but Lord, we

1730. thank you that we serve a God who

1731. leads us so well, so kindly and

1732. gently, and has provided grace in

1733. Jesus Christ for those times when we

  1734. have not measured up.

1735. We know that in our church, in our

1736. families, in our parenting, in our

1737. ministries, we have a lot of

1738. responsibility, and it's hard to

  1739. always get it right.

1740. And so we pray for your help.

  1741. In Jesus' name, amen.
