  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Judges chapter 13, 14, 15, and 16.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 251 of your Pew Bible.

  3. And as you're turning there, I just want to remind you,

  4. last spring, 2023, Lake Mead in Nevada,

  5. the water levels dropped to an all-time low.

  6. And it was a result of this long, intense drought.

  7. And as those life-giving waters receded, skeletons got exposed.

  8. Dead bodies started showing up.

  9. There was a gruesomeness to that drought.

  10. Now, the book of Judges is like a long, intense, spiritual drought.

  11. God's people, Israel, chronically, repeatedly rejecting God for the gods and values of the Canaanite nations they were living among.

  12. And as a result, the reservoir of holiness among this people just started drying up.

  13. It started to recede.

  14. And they were becoming more and more like the people that they were living among.

  15. Worldliness, Canaanization, is when Christians forget who their Jesus is,

  16. and they start living like the non-Christians around them.

  17. Instead of standing out, they blend in.

  18. Worldliness is toxic to the church.

  19. It's harmful.

  20. It's a spiritual drought.

  21. Brothers and sisters, there's no life in becoming like the world.

  22. There's no life in that.

  23. It's a spiritual drought.

  24. It's a spiritual drought.

  25. It's a spiritual drought.

  26. The Lord Jesus calls us to be full of grace, self-controlled in this present age.

  27. And what we see in this passage of Scripture is a man who is impulsive.

  28. He sees and takes again and again and again.

  29. It's the M.O. of worldliness.

  30. And as the book of Judges, as we've seen it progress, or maybe better said, digress,

  31. each judge has represented a new low in Israel's reservoir of holiness.

  32. There to be holy as God is holy.

  33. Othniel, Ehud, Barak, Gideon, Abimelech, if you want to name them among the judges.

  34. Jephthah.

  35. Jephthah.

  36. It's the reservoir of holiness receding and exposing sin.

  37. And now we find ourselves in the last of the judges, the low watermark of the book of Judges.

  38. Samson.

  39. Samson.

  40. Now, if you grew up in Sunday school, you have learned that Samson is a hero of the faith.

  41. He is a bulking beast of a man.

  42. A hero of the faith.

  43. He's in Hebrews 11.

  44. He does exercise faith after he's humbled and his eyes are gouged out.

  45. But even then, what you're going to see, it's mixed.

  46. It's a mixed thing.

  47. It's a mixed thing.

  48. What we see in Samson is a deeply flawed, profoundly compromised, and a poster child of

  49. Canaanization, of worldliness.

  50. And he represents Israel.

  51. Israel has been Canaanized.

  52. Their refusal to repent of their sin and continually go back to God, God, or the gods of the nations again and again.

  53. Well, it brought them to a point in this drought that is just difficult to see.

  54. Hey, do you know what it's like to be in a spiritual drought, personally?

  55. Maybe you've been Canaanized.

  56. Maybe you've bought into the world's thinking and values and ways of being.

  57. Are you prone to do what's right in your own eyes without reference to God?

  58. This morning, we're going to look at this text.

  59. I want to help you to see three major characters in this text.

  60. And then after we walk through it, I want to help you make some connections.

  61. I want to highlight some things.

  62. And then we're going to apply it to our lives today.

  63. Okay.

  64. So let's look at this text.

  65. Let's dig into it.

  66. What I want to help you understand right out of the gate is that Judges 13, 14, 15, and 16, it rolls out like this.

  67. Chapter 13 is about Samson's parents.

  68. Chapter 14, 15, and 16 are the life and times of Samson.

  69. And it culminates in this situation with this woman named Delilah.

  70. Samson kind of shares his secrets with her.

  71. She hands him over.

  72. He has his hair cut, his eyes gouged out.

  73. He ends up in Gaza in the Temple of Dagon.

  74. And he has his hands and he brings down the house.

  75. You're going to see it's a big disappointment.

  76. Three characters.

  77. Character number one is Manoah, Samson's dad, and his unnamed mom.

  78. In chapter 13, verse 1, we are reminded of the cycle.

  79. We've seen this again and again.

  80. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of God.

  81. They do evil and then God hands them over to an oppressor.

  82. Remember this time in verse 1, it's the Philistines for 40 years.

  83. And typically in that cycle, what happens next is God's people will cry out.

  84. It doesn't happen in this account.

  85. And then after they cry out, God raises up a deliverer, and that deliverer brings peace to the land.

  86. That doesn't happen in this account.

  87. And do you know why it doesn't happen in this account?

  88. Because the cycle is falling apart because Israel is being Canaanized.

  89. In fact, they're becoming more and more like the people around them.

  90. In verses 2 through 25, we're introduced to Samson's parents.

  91. Manoah's dad and his unnamed mom.

  92. In 2 through 7, an angel of the Lord, a real personal, physical manifestation of God,

  93. shows up to Samson's mom before he's born.

  94. And the angel of the Lord tells her that she's going to have a baby.

  95. She's been barren.

  96. And that she's going to have to be very careful with what she eats and what she drinks

  97. because her boy is going to be a Nazarite.

  98. You see that in verse 5?

  99. Now, when you hear Nazarite, don't think Nazareth.

  100. Nazareth is a place.

  101. That's where Jesus grew up.

  102. A Nazarite is a kind of holiness vow.

  103. We can see it in Numbers chapter 6.

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  104. And here's what a Nazarite vow is.

  105. It's one of Israel's people, they could make a voluntary Nazarite vow for a season.

  106. And what they would do is they were not allowed to drink alcohol.

  107. They couldn't touch corpses.

  108. And they couldn't get haircuts.

  109. And so those three things are what comprised a Nazarite vow.

  110. The design for it was so that there would be a consecrated season of holiness.

  111. And so a Nazarite would be like holy of holy among God's people for a season.

  112. And so what's going on here is that the angel of the Lord is telling Samson's wife,

  113. you got a holy one coming.

  114. And it builds our expectations.

  115. Well, Samson's mom tells Samson's dad, Manoah, what the angel of the Lord tells her.

  116. And what I want you to see is their response.

  117. In verses 8 through 23, we see the response of this couple to this angel of the Lord.

  118. Look at verse 8.

  119. Look at verse 8.

  120. Then Manoah prayed to the Lord.

  121. So Manoah's wife tells Manoah what has happened, this angel of the Lord.

  122. And Manoah, his first response is prayer.

  123. This is a welcomed, welcomed kind of event in the book of Judges.

  124. And look what he prays.

  125. Oh, Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent come again to us and teach us.

  126. Not only is he praying, but he's asking that the angel of the Lord would come back and teach them.

  127. Oh, this is good.

  128. This is kind of a posture of humility, a posture towards God, a wanting to understand things.

  129. And it doesn't stop there.

  130. The angel of the Lord does come back.

  131. And Manoah, look what he says to him.

  132. Verse 12.

  133. Now, when your words come true.

  134. Now, when we have this baby boy.

  135. When your words come true.

  136. Do you see what's happening there?

  137. This angel of the Lord is speaking.

  138. And Manoah and his wife are believing.

  139. We see it again in verse 17.

  140. Manoah doesn't recognize the angel of the Lord.

  141. So he says, what is your name?

  142. So that when your words come true, we may honor you.

  143. So there's this posture of prayer, of being willing to be taught, of wanting to be taught, of believing in God's word, of wanting to honor this one with this news.

  144. This is looking good.

  145. This is kind of like we haven't really seen this recently in the book of Judges.

  146. So, this Canaanized land, maybe there is some reservoir of holiness.

  147. In verse 16, Manoah and his wife are like, hey, come eat with us.

  148. And the angel of the Lord is like, I don't eat your food.

  149. Offer it up as an offering to the Lord.

  150. And when they offer up this meal to the Lord, they light it up.

  151. There's this flame.

  152. In verse 20, look what happens.

  153. And when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord went up in the flame of the altar.

  154. Now Manoah and his wife were watching.

  155. They were watching.

  156. And they fell on their faces to the ground.

  157. Awe.

  158. Reverence.

  159. Amazement.

  160. Worship.

  161. This is good.

  162. This parents of Samson.

  163. He's going to have this wonder child.

  164. This miracle baby.

  165. They seem to be tender towards the Lord.

  166. But it's not all perfect because in verse 16, Manoah doesn't seem to recognize the angel of the Lord.

  167. So, that kind of gets at this kind of like dullness, spiritual dullness.

  168. And they actually name him Samson, which most scholars think is a reference to a sun god.

  169. S-U-N, God.

  170. So, there's still kind of like this Canaanized dimension to it.

  171. But by and large, they are responding in humility and godwardness to the angel of the Lord.

  172. And we're left thinking that Samson's mom was obedient.

  173. She didn't eat things or drink things inappropriate to having this child.

  174. It's an instructive for us because God delights in humility.

  175. This is the one to whom I will look.

  176. He was humble, contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.

  177. And we're seeing that in Samson's parents.

  178. So, what about this wonder boy?

  179. So, Manoah, his parents, that's kind of character.

  180. Character's one.

  181. The second character we get to see now is Samson himself.

  182. And of all the judges, Samson is the most profoundly self-centered.

  183. Hey, ladies!

  184. He's a womanizer.

  185. Chapter 14, 1 through 3.

  186. He goes down to Timnah in Philistia.

  187. He sees this Philistine babe.

  188. And he demands his parents hook him up.

  189. I'm marrying her.

  190. I'm marrying her.

  191. She was right in his eyes, verse 3.

  192. Verse 7, 14.

  193. She was right in Samson's eyes.

  194. So, he demands it.

  195. And then, in chapter 16, verses 1 through 3, 1 through 4, Samson's back in Philistia, in Gaza.

  196. And he sees a Philistine prostitute and goes into her.

  197. Again, man, what is up with this Nazarite?

  198. And if that's not enough, as you kind of work through chapter 16, he falls in love with this woman from the valley of Sorek.

  199. Again, Philistia.

  200. Delilah.

  201. Falls head over and heels with her.

  202. This man is, what we're seeing is ruled by his desires.

  203. Unrestrained.

  204. He's a womanizer.

  205. And not just a womanizer.

  206. He's breaking God's law multiple ways.

  207. Because in Deuteronomy 7, 1 through 4, God forbids the parents of Israel from giving their sons and daughters in marriage to the sons and daughters of the nations around them.

  208. Because they will turn their hearts away from them.

  209. What we see here in Samson is he doesn't care.

  210. He sees and he takes.

  211. And he's objectifying these women.

  212. He sees them.

  213. He wants them.

  214. He has them.

  215. This isn't humble.

  216. This isn't God word.

  217. This is prideful.

  218. This is selfish.

  219. This is disobedient.

  220. And this is Samson.

  221. But it doesn't stop there.

  222. We see in chapter 14, verse 5, there's this episode of Samson's heading back to Timnah to meet his Philistine babe.

  223. He's attacked by a lion.

  224. Rips the lion apart.

  225. It's probably, at that moment, he's touching a corpse and he's been defiled.

  226. Well, later he goes back to the corpse.

  227. And you know what's happened in the corpse since he's been there?

  228. Honey bees.

  229. They've made a hive with honey.

  230. He dips into that, starts eating it.

  231. And if he wasn't defiled before, he is defiled now.

  232. Because Nazarites aren't supposed to catch corpses.

  233. He defiles himself.

  234. He doesn't care.

  235. Honey, me want, me take.

  236. He's lacking self-control.

  237. And he's disobedient to his parents.

  238. When he first expressed interest in this Philistine girl in Timnah, his dad is like,

  239. Hey, how about one of the young ladies from Israel?

  240. Not one of these uncircumcised Philistines.

  241. He's like, I don't care.

  242. Get her to me.

  243. He disregards his parents.

  244. In verses 14, chapter 14, 6 and 9, after he kills the lion and eats of the honey and then gives his parents some of that honey, he doesn't tell them.

  245. Again, he's not honoring his parents.

  246. This holy man, this Nazarite, is anything but holy.

  247. He doesn't care about people.

  248. He objectifies women.

  249. He disregards his parents.

  250. There's this whole incident where he puts this riddle to a bunch of these 30 Philistine guys about kind of the honey in the lion.

  251. And they figure it out because they objectify his wife and force her to tell them what's going on.

  252. But Samson had bet on it.

  253. Bet 30 changes of clothes.

  254. And so when he loses, he goes to Ashkelon and he kills 30 Philistines, grabs their clothes, brings them back, and gives them to those 30 dudes.

  255. He doesn't care.

  256. There are a number of other accounts in 14, 15, and 16 in the life and times of Samson.

  257. It's striking.

  258. I mean, there's this incident where he kills a thousand Philistines, this chapter 15, with a jawbone of a donkey.

  259. In verse 18, what we see is this.

  260. And I quote.

  261. Samson was very thirsty and he called upon the Lord and said,

  262. You have granted this great salvation by the hand of your servant.

  263. And shall now I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?

  264. Grumble.

  265. Doubt.

  266. You know who's self-centered?

  267. Samson.

  268. There's this other accounts of his just doing incredibly selfish things.

  269. But even in his death.

  270. He's been handed over by Delilah to the lords of the Philistines.

  271. He has had his hair cut.

  272. By the way, in Numbers chapter 6, if someone breaks a Nazarite vow, they are to shave their heads.

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  273. So it's a picture of humiliation.

  274. Repentance.

  275. He's got his eyes gouged out.

  276. They bring him to the house of Dagon, the god of the Philistines.

  277. And they are just celebrating the Philistines, the victory Dagon has won over Samson and Samson's god.

  278. And when Samson comes out to this house where there's 3,000 Philistines,

  279. and he puts his hands on the pillars of this house, he prays.

  280. In verse 28.

  281. O Lord God.

  282. Chapter 16, 28.

  283. Please remember me.

  284. And please strengthen me only this once, O God,

  285. that I may be the avenged,

  286. that Israel may be avenged,

  287. and that you would be glorified among all the nations.

  288. That I'd be avenged for my eyes.

  289. Even in his death.

  290. Can't see.

  291. But his eyes are on himself.

  292. There's a deliverance.

  293. There's a measure of faith.

  294. But you can't help but say,

  295. wait, wait, isn't he a,

  296. isn't he a Nazarite?

  297. Didn't God call him to deliver?

  298. Why am I disappointed?

  299. Because he's Canaanized.

  300. He's selfish.

  301. He's prideful.

  302. He's the low watermark of the judges in the book of Judges.

  303. Even in his death.

  304. Aren't you glad that our perfect Savior,

  305. who's accomplished a permanent salvation,

  306. that when he went to his death,

  307. that he wasn't self-focused.

  308. He was selfless.

  309. For you and for me.

  310. When he cried out to Talistai,

  311. it is finished.

  312. It was for us.

  313. Which brings me to

  314. the third character

  315. of the Samson account.

  316. God.

  317. In chapter 13,

  318. the angel of the Lord,

  319. this physical manifestation of God himself,

  320. he's referenced 13 times

  321. in chapter 13.

  322. And this angel of the Lord

  323. is God's manifest presence

  324. and he's appearing to Manoah and his wife.

  325. And can I just remind you of something?

  326. That's not because Israel asked.

  327. It's not because they cried out.

  328. It's because God is gracious.

  329. God sent the angel of the Lord

  330. to work a deliverance

  331. for his people.

  332. This is a picture of God's

  333. unmerited favor.

  334. Of his grace.

  335. And then there are these references

  336. to the Spirit of the Lord

  337. throughout this account.

  338. In chapter 13, 25,

  339. the Spirit of the Lord

  340. starts to stir in a young Samson.

  341. In chapter 14, verse 6,

  342. the Spirit of the Lord

  343. rushes upon Samson

  344. and he kills that lion.

  345. In 14, 19,

  346. the Spirit of the Lord

  347. rushes upon Samson

  348. and he kills those 30 guys

  349. from Ashkelon.

  350. In chapter 15, verse 14,

  351. the Spirit of the Lord

  352. rushes upon Samson

  353. and he kills those 1,000 Philistines

  354. with the jawbone of a donkey.

  355. and even implied in chapter 16,

  356. the empowering of Samson

  357. to take down the house,

  358. killing 3,000.

  359. the Spirit of the Lord

  360. is at work in the midst

  361. of a spiritual drought.

  362. Despite Samson

  363. working to bring about

  364. his purposes.

  365. And then there are

  366. the answered prayers.

  367. God answering the prayer

  368. of Manoah,

  369. he heard him

  370. in chapter 13, verse 9.

  371. Even Samson,

  372. when he's whining

  373. and grumbling,

  374. I need something to drink

  375. after killing people.

  376. God opens up a rock.

  377. When Samson prays,

  378. probably the first real prayer

  379. of his life,

  380. of anything close to humility.

  381. In chapter 16, 28,

  382. God again hears

  383. and answers Samson.

  384. What we see

  385. throughout these chapters

  386. is that God is at work.

  387. Despite the spiritual drought,

  388. despite the worldliness

  389. of God's people,

  390. God is still at work.

  391. Chapter 14, verse 4.

  392. Samson has just gone down

  393. to Timnah

  394. and he has demanded

  395. that his parents

  396. make this Philistine woman

  397. his wife

  398. because she's right

  399. in his eyes.

  400. And in verse 4,

  401. chapter 14, verse 4,

  402. we read this.

  403. His father and mother

  404. did not know

  405. that it was from the Lord.

  406. For he, the Lord,

  407. was seeking an opportunity

  408. against the Philistines.

  409. God is sovereign

  410. over all things.

  411. God is providentially

  412. at work

  413. accomplishing his purpose.

  414. It is mysterious.

  415. It is amazing.

  416. And it should make

  417. you have this sense

  418. of our God

  419. is something else.

  420. God is so grateful

  421. that my Savior

  422. is not an imperfect,

  423. selfish Savior,

  424. but a perfect,

  425. selfless Savior.

  426. What's going on

  427. in Judges 13 through 16

  428. is that we have Israel

  429. getting to be at its worst

  430. in the lowest recessions.

  431. It's even going to get lower.

  432. Spiritual drought.

  433. Samson,

  434. the poster child

  435. of Canaanization.

  436. And yet God

  437. is still at work.

  438. Do you know

  439. what kind of God this is?

  440. You want to know his name?

  441. Manoah asks for his name.

  442. In verse,

  443. let me find it for you.

  444. 13, 18.

  445. And the angel of the Lord

  446. said to him,

  447. why do you ask my name?

  448. Seeing it is wonderful.

  449. Wonderful.

  450. A God who works like this,

  451. despite the worldliness

  452. of his people,

  453. carrying out his purposes,

  454. is a wonderful God,

  455. selflessly at work.

  456. You know,

  457. there's some things,

  458. having seen these three characters,

  459. Manoah,

  460. Samson's parents,

  461. Samson himself.

  462. We've seen God at work

  463. in this four chapters.

  464. Let me kind of highlight

  465. some things for you.

  466. First,

  467. there's the contrast

  468. between Samson's parents

  469. and Samson.

  470. Samson's parents

  471. are humble.

  472. They're not perfect.

  473. They're Godward.

  474. They're obedient.

  475. Samson's mom

  476. evidently did what God required.

  477. But Samson,

  478. he's not humble.

  479. He's prideful.

  480. He insists on his own way.

  481. He's not Godward.

  482. He's selfish.

  483. Disobedient.

  484. Again and again and again.

  485. This contrast

  486. gets something done.

  487. And here's what it gets done.

  488. It helps us to see

  489. how far Samson has gone.

  490. Where this leader is.

  491. that he's the low watermark

  492. of the nation

  493. representing the nation.

  494. It's sobering.

  495. The second highlight

  496. is something I just mentioned.

  497. God is at work

  498. even in spiritual drought.

  499. Isn't he wonderful?

  500. Are you in a spiritual drought?

  501. Are you shooting up prayers

  502. that you don't think

  503. are going through the ceiling?

  504. God's at work.

  505. He's bigger than that.

  506. But what I want you to see

  507. are the eyes.

  508. The eyes.

  509. It starts off in chapter 13.1.

  510. And the people of Israel

  511. again did what was evil

  512. in the sight of the Lord

  513. in God's eyes.

  514. In 13.20.

  515. We read of Minoah

  516. and his wife's response

  517. when they see

  518. the angel of the Lord

  519. go into the flame

  520. and go up.

  521. When they see that

  522. they were watching

  523. they fall on their faces.

  524. The Philistines

  525. in the house of Dagon.

  526. They see this humiliated hero

  527. brought out

  528. changed and bound

  529. head shaved off

  530. eyes gouged out

  531. and they think they won.

  532. They think they won.

  533. They think they won.

  534. But

  535. God was up to something

  536. much different.

  537. They don't see

  538. what God's doing.

  539. Samson's eyes.

  540. Chapter 14.3.

  541. He did what was right

  542. in his eyes.

  543. His own eyes.

  544. Chapter 7.

  545. Samson did what was right

  546. in his eyes.

  547. Do you know what happens

  548. after this

  549. in chapter 17

  550. through 21?

  551. Do you know what gets

  552. repeated

  553. in the book of Judges?

  554. There was no king

  555. in the land

  556. and they did what was right

  557. in their own eyes.

  558. It starts with

  559. the Samson account.

  560. And if you turn

  561. to the very last verse

  562. of the book of Judges,

  563. you will read this.

  564. In those days,

  565. there was no king

  566. in Israel.

  567. Everyone did

  568. what was right

  569. in their own eyes.

  570. That,

  571. doing what is right

  572. in your own eyes,

  573. is the MO,

  574. the modus operandi

  575. of worldliness,

  576. of canonization.

  577. It's living life

  578. without any reference

  579. to God

  580. and not caring.

  581. So you know

  582. what the point

  583. of this is?

  584. Don't do what's right

  585. in your own eyes,

  586. brothers and sisters.

  587. Don't do what's right

  588. in your own eyes.

  589. Do what's right

  590. in the eyes

  591. of your Lord.

  592. Do what's right

  593. in His eyes.

  594. And it really begs

  595. the question,

  596. how do you do that?

  597. This is how you do that.

  598. You fix your eyes

  599. upon Jesus.

  600. And when you fix

  601. your eyes

  602. upon Jesus,

  603. your heart

  604. will change.

  605. Your want

  606. muscle

  607. will shift

  608. from wanting

  609. what you want

  610. according to

  611. what you think

  612. is right

  613. to wanting

  614. what God wants

  615. and what He's revealed

  616. in the Scriptures.

  617. Fix your eyes

  618. upon Jesus.

  619. Don't do what's right

  620. in your own eyes,

  621. Samson.

  622. Do what's right

  623. in the eyes

  624. of the Lord

  625. by first fixing

  626. your eyes

  627. on Jesus.

  628. And now let's

  629. apply this.

  630. members of Christ

  631. the King Church.

  632. When you see

  633. a leader

  634. like Samson

  635. doing what's right

  636. in his own eyes

  637. and you realize

  638. what's possible

  639. of leaders

  640. of God's people,

  641. it should

  642. sober us

  643. but it makes

  644. us resolve

  645. as well.

  646. Here's

  647. what we need

  648. to commit to

  649. Christ the King Church.

  650. when it comes

  651. to leaders

  652. in our church

  653. whether they be

  654. elders

  655. or deacons,

  656. aspiring elders,

  657. life group leaders,

  658. ministry directors,

  659. let's insist

  660. by faith

  661. that the leaders

  662. of Christ the King

  663. Church

  664. fix their eyes

  665. on Jesus.

  666. That they don't

  667. do what's right

  668. in their own eyes,

  669. that they seek

  670. to do what's right

  671. in the Lord's eyes.

  672. Let's insist

  673. upon that

  674. as a membership

  675. of this church.

  676. It's a way

  677. of talking

  678. about humility.

  679. It's a way

  680. of recognizing

  681. men and women

  682. who aren't in it

  683. for themselves

  684. but are in it

  685. for the Lord

  686. Jesus Christ.

  687. That's who we want

  688. in leadership positions

  689. of our church.

  690. Do you know why?

  691. Why?

  692. It'll protect us

  693. against spiritual drought.

  694. It'll lead us

  695. into the presence

  696. of our Lord,

  697. not away from it.

  698. We need to insist

  699. in our nomination process

  700. as we're identifying

  701. potential leaders

  702. being God raised up

  703. that they're more

  704. interested in God's plan,

  705. God's purposes

  706. than their own.

  707. The second

  708. way to apply this

  709. is by talking

  710. about self-control.

  711. Samson

  712. was anything

  713. but self-control.

  714. He was

  715. such

  716. the impulsive,

  717. irreverent man,

  718. the poster child

  719. of impulsiveness,

  720. again and again

  721. and again.

  722. He did what was right

  723. in his own eyes.

  724. He lacked

  725. self-control.

  726. What is self-control?

  727. Self-control

  728. is the ability

  729. to say no

  730. to something now

  731. and to say yes

  732. to something later.

  733. It's a delayed

  734. gratification.

  735. It's the ability

  736. to say no

  737. to something now,

  738. to say yes

  739. to something later,

  740. and the difference

  741. between worldly

  742. self-control

  743. and biblical,

  744. godly self-control

  745. is this.

  746. It's who you do it for.

  747. Worldly self-control

  748. is a dependence

  749. on yourself

  750. and you're saying

  751. no to something

  752. now to say yes

  753. to something later

  754. for your own sake,

  755. according to your own eyes.

  756. Biblical,

  757. godly self-control

  758. is when you say

  759. no to something

  760. now

  761. and to say yes

  762. to something later

  763. for the glory

  764. of your god

  765. because of his eyes

  766. for his name's sake

  767. not your own.

  768. This has bearing

  769. in things like

  770. sexual desires,

  771. entertainment choices,

  772. how you speak,

  773. how you manage

  774. your anger,

  775. your eating,

  776. your driving,

  777. your sleeping,

  778. your kind of

  779. workaholism

  780. or your thoughtfulness.

  781. It has bearing

  782. with it all.

  783. In fact,

  784. in the book of Titus,

  785. one of the qualifications

  786. for an elder,

  787. chapter 1, verse 8,

  788. is to be self-controlled.

  789. A man who demonstrates this.

  790. And then in chapter 2,

  791. verses 1 through 6,

  792. the whole church

  793. is called to it.

  794. Would you turn

  795. in your Bibles

  796. to Titus chapter 2?

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  797. I want you to see this.

  798. Paul is writing

  799. to Titus

  800. who is planting

  801. this church

  802. in Crete

  803. and he tells Titus

  804. when it comes

  805. to the older men

  806. of the church,

  807. they're to be

  808. sober-minded,

  809. dignified,

  810. self-controlled

  811. among other things.

  812. Chapter 3,

  813. he says,

  814. instruct the older women

  815. likewise

  816. to be a number

  817. of different things.

  818. They are to teach

  819. the younger women

  820. and one of the things

  821. they're to teach

  822. the younger women

  823. is to be self-controlled.

  824. So not only

  825. younger women

  826. to be self-controlled,

  827. but the older women

  828. must be self-controlled

  829. to teach them

  830. to be self-controlled.

  831. So right now,

  832. we've got older men

  833. to be self-controlled,

  834. older women

  835. to be self-controlled,

  836. younger women

  837. to be self-controlled,

  838. and then we land

  839. in verse 6.

  840. The only thing

  841. he says to younger men

  842. is that they need

  843. to be self-controlled.

  844. unto the glory of Jesus.

  845. Not doing what's right in their own eyes,

  846. doing what's right in the eyes of the Lord.

  847. Being able to say no to sin now

  848. or to lesser things now

  849. in order to say yes to the glory of Jesus then.

  850. A church full.

  851. And then we see in 2.11 how

  852. for the grace of God has appeared

  853. bringing salvation for all people

  854. training us to renounce ungodliness

  855. and worldly passions

  856. and to live self-controlled, upright

  857. and godly lives in the present age.

  858. Brothers and sisters,

  859. we're to be self-controlled.

  860. You know what that does?

  861. It's a preventative against worldliness.

  862. Of not becoming like the world.

  863. When we are trusting God's grace

  864. and God's grace is training us

  865. to say no to ungodliness

  866. and to say yes to Jesus.

  867. There's another application of this

  868. for men in the room.

  869. Stop objectifying women.

  870. Stop.

  871. Stop.

  872. Stop making women,

  873. whether physically or digitally,

  874. the objects of your lust.

  875. You need to say no to that.

  876. And say yes to better things.

  877. God has grace for you, brothers.

  878. And when we start treating women

  879. with dignity,

  880. we start creating a culture

  881. more and more in our church

  882. where both men and women thrive.

  883. The final application is

  884. fix your eyes on Jesus,

  885. brothers and sisters.

  886. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

  887. I've been singing a song this morning.

  888. Turn your eyes upon Jesus.

  889. Look full in His wonderful face.

  890. And the things of earth

  891. will grow strangely dim

  892. in the light of His glory and grace.

  893. worldliness is a spiritual drought

  894. that evaporates godliness

  895. among God's people.

  896. We see it in Samson.

  897. Are you in a spiritual drought?

  898. Because of your own worldliness,

  899. God is at work.

  900. God's bigger than your worldliness.

  901. God is at work.

  902. God is at work.

  903. God is at work.

  904. Turn your eyes to Him.

  905. Stop doing what's right

  906. in your own eyes.

  907. Start doing what's right

  908. in His eyes.

  909. So if you are a Christian

  910. and you are experiencing

  911. the drought of worldliness,

  912. fix your eyes upon Jesus

  913. and find a wellspring of life

  914. for your soul.

  915. Fill the reservoir.

  916. And if you're a non-Christian

  917. in the room,

  918. you're brittle,

  919. you're empty,

  920. Jesus will make you full

  921. and resilient.

  922. The world can't give you life,

  923. but Jesus is the way,

  924. the truth,

  925. and the life.

  926. Do you know what?

  927. There's another way

  928. you can talk about.

  929. Stop doing what's right

  930. in your own eyes

  931. and start doing

  932. what's right

  933. in the Lord's eyes.

  934. There's another way

  935. to say it.

  936. Do you know how it goes?

  937. Walk by faith,

  938. not by sight.

  939. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

  940. Let's pray.

  941. God in heaven,

  942. Father,

  943. would you pour out

  944. your Spirit upon us?

  945. Move upon us

  946. thank you for your Holy Spirit.

  947. And God,

  948. would you make us

  949. self-controlled,

  950. upright in this present age?

  951. Not doing what's right

  952. in our own eyes,

  953. but striving more and more

  954. to do what's right

  955. in your eyes

  956. because you are so worth it.

  957. And it's your name we pray.

  958. Amen.

  959. Amen.

  960. Amen.

  961. Amen.

  962. Amen.

  963. Amen.

  964. Amen.

  965. Amen.

  966. Amen.

  967. Amen.

  968. Amen.

  969. Amen.

  970. Amen.

  971. Amen.

  972. Amen.

  973. Amen.

  974. Amen.
