  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Judges chapter 19, 20, and 21, it's on page 257 of your Pew Bible.

    Judges 19 chapter mention

  2. Well, in February 2023, there was a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and it resulted

  3. in a massive toxic waste spill.

  4. It was quite a train wreck.

  5. And the cause, it turns out, was a failed wheel bearing in the train itself.

  6. This morning, we're going to look at the book of Judges, and the book of Judges ends in a train wreck.

  7. You could say the whole book of Judges is a train wreck.

  8. God's old covenant people, Israel, failing to dispossess the nations of the promised land,

  9. and they failed to dispossess them because they failed to trust that their king was in their midst.

  10. They failed to trust Yahweh.

  11. It resulted in a train wreck with toxic waste all over the place.

  12. Cycle after cycle, throughout the Judges, we see Israel denying and disobeying their king who was in their midst.

  13. The tragedy is that Israel becomes like the Canaanite nations that they were to devote to destruction.

  14. And at the end of the book of Judges, do you know who's devoted to destruction?

  15. Judges 19, 20, and 21 is a smoldering wreckage of God's people.

  16. Israel has been Canaanite.

  17. Israel has been Canaanized.

  18. They've become just like the nations they were to dispossess.

  19. Israel's greatest enemy, it turns out, wasn't the surrounding nations.

  20. It was themselves.

  21. They were the cause to their own train wreck.

  22. Now, if you were a railway inspector back in February 2023,

  23. and you showed up to East Palestine,

  24. you would have been given the responsibility to find out what was the cause of that train wreck.

  25. And this morning, we get to see kind of the final kind of wreckage of this train wreck called Israel.

  26. So, the cause of their Canaanization is what we're going after.

  27. They were their own worst enemy.

  28. And you know what?

  29. It begs the question, church,

  30. are we our own worst enemy?

  31. Is there a train wreck for us just waiting to happen?

  32. Four scenes.

  33. Scene 1, chapter 19, 1 through 10,

  34. we have an introduction,

  35. and you're going to smell something off.

  36. Scene 2, chapter 19, 10 through 28,

  37. we have one of the most graphic, wicked acts in your Bible.

  38. Scene 3, chapter 19, 29 through chapter 20, verse 48,

  39. there is a holy war.

  40. And there's deep, dark irony.

  41. Scene 4, all of chapter 21, damage control,

  42. according to what's right in your own eyes.

  43. The book of Judges poses a warning for the Christian church today.

  44. Are we our own worst enemy?

  45. Let's look at scene 1.

  46. We've got a marital spat.

  47. Chapter 19, 1 through 10.

  48. And before we get into something,

  49. I just want you to notice verse 1.

  50. In those days when there was no king in Israel,

  51. that's the author being a little bit tongue-in-cheek.

  52. There was not a human king in Israel.

  53. But Yahweh, the king of all, was in Israel.

  54. His people just weren't acknowledging him as king.

  55. So we start off there.

  56. And then we learn about this marital spat.

  57. We are brought into, in verses 2 through 10,

  58. this marital spat between an unnamed Levite and his concubine.

  59. Now remember, a Levite was the clergy of Israel.

  60. They were their own tribe.

  61. They were like the pastors of Israel.

  62. They were the spiritual leaders of Israel.

  63. So they were the ones who were to be leading the nation spiritually.

  64. And this Levite, turns out, he's got a concubine

  65. who took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem, 19.

  66. 1.

  67. A concubine was a second-class wife,

  68. usually a servant or a slave,

  69. and their primary responsibility was to generate babies.

  70. It was demeaning.

  71. And what should strike you out of the gate

  72. is that a spiritual leader of Israel has a concubine.

  73. Smells a little off.

  74. Well, in verse 3, he goes from the hill country of Ephraim,

  75. where he's sojourning,

  76. and he goes to Bethlehem to where she went to be with her father

  77. because she had committed some kind of unfaithfulness.

  78. He gets there.

  79. He speaks kindly to her.

  80. She welcomes him in,

  81. and it looks like things are getting patched up.

  82. And then verses 4 through 9,

  83. we are introduced to the concubine's dad

  84. who is, like, aggressively hospitable.

  85. So in verse 4, we read that

  86. he made the Levite,

  87. his concubine,

  88. the daughter of the Bethlehemite,

  89. and his servant stay three days.

  90. Come stay.

  91. Let's drink and be merry.

  92. Next day, verse 5, day 4,

  93. the Levite, his concubine,

  94. their servant,

  95. they get ready to go.

  96. This hospitable Bethlehemite says,

  97. no, no, come on.

  98. You don't want to go.

  99. He's kind of full-course press, hospitality.

  100. No, let's eat, drink.

  101. Let's enjoy each other's company.

  102. The day passes.

  103. They stay another night.

  104. Verses 8 through 10,

  105. day 5 rolls around.

  106. They get up.

  107. They get ready to go.

  108. The day passes.

  109. The dad is putting full-court press hospitality on,

  110. and you start kind of asking,

  111. why is he being so hospitable?

  112. Does he know something that we don't know?

  113. But eventually in verse 10,

  114. the man, the Levite,

  115. would not spend the night.

  116. So he rose and departs.

  117. And so this is well into the day.

  118. So here's the introduction.

  119. We've got a Levite,

  120. his concubine wife,

  121. and this very hospitable dad.

  122. And this is how this account,

  123. this,

  124. the end of the book of Judges,

  125. this account starts.

  126. And there's something that you need to know is off here.

  127. First is this.

  128. We don't know the nature of the concubine's unfaithfulness.

  129. And so we learn that.

  130. Verse 2,

  131. and his concubine was unfaithful to him,

  132. but we're not told how.

  133. And then,

  134. the second thing we notice that's kind of off

  135. is this kind of aggressive,

  136. over-the-top hospitality by the concubine's dad.

  137. Like, what's that all about?

  138. Does he know something we don't know?

  139. But what should really get your attention

  140. is that the spiritual leader,

  141. one of the spiritual leaders of Israel,

  142. has a concubine.

  143. He is clearly ignoring Genesis 2, 24 and 25,

  144. which is very clear in saying

  145. God's design for marriage

  146. is one man married to one woman

  147. before him for life.

  148. So we start with a bit of some compromise here.

  149. Moral compromise.

  150. Now, if you were inspecting a train wreck

  151. in Judges 19, 20, and 21,

  152. you're looking at a spiritual leader

  153. who's compromised.

  154. Despite his sweet talking,

  155. something's off here.

  156. But what we're going to see

  157. is we're not looking at the cause

  158. of the train wreck.

  159. The failure of the train wreck

  160. is something else.

  161. So let's move on to scene two.

  162. Scene two is in chapter 19, 10 through 28.

  163. And just to remind you

  164. that the Levite is concubine,

  165. and the servant with their donkeys,

  166. they have left Bethlehem,

  167. and they're going to go back

  168. up to the hill country of Ephraim.

  169. And so that's basically

  170. a 10 to 12 mile trek north.

  171. They got a day started late in the day.

  172. And so in verses 10 through 15,

  173. what we see is

  174. they need to make a decision

  175. of where they're going to stay the night

  176. because they got to stop somewhere

  177. because it's too far to travel

  178. to get back to the hill country of Ephraim.

  179. And so what we notice right out of the gate

  180. is that they get near to this place

  181. called Jebus.

  182. And we see the author chime in,

  183. that is Jerusalem.

  184. And so what that means is this.

  185. This city, which is later to become Jerusalem,

  186. is in control of Canaanites,

  187. non-Israelites,

  188. or what the Levite will say is foreigners.

  189. Well, we see in verse 11

  190. that the servant says,

  191. hey, Master Levite,

  192. hey, let's turn aside

  193. to this city of the Jebusites, Jebus,

  194. and we will just kind of bed down for the night.

  195. To which the Levite said,

  196. absolutely not, verse 12 and 13.

  197. They're foreigners.

  198. They don't belong to the people of Israel.

  199. We're going to move past them

  200. and go another four or five miles to Gibeah.

  201. Let's go there

  202. because that's our people.

  203. And what he knows is

  204. they're going to be hospitable.

  205. The Jebusites,

  206. they're not going to be hospitable to us Jews.

  207. They're foreigners.

  208. But when we get to Gibeah,

  209. which is of the tribe of Benjamin,

  210. they will treat us well.

  211. So in verse 15,

  212. we fast forward,

  213. they show up in Gibeah.

  214. They went into the square,

  215. which a traveling Jew would go into,

  216. and they would expect someone

  217. to be hospitable to them.

  218. And look what happens.

  219. No one took them into his house

  220. to spend the night, verse 15.

  221. And what you need to know

  222. is that is a red flag.

  223. Their inhospitableness,

  224. that is not good.

  225. In verses 16 through 21,

  226. the story continues.

  227. There's this old man,

  228. not from Gibeah,

  229. but from the hill country of Ephraim.

  230. He's a sojourner in Gibeah.

  231. He's doing some work there.

  232. And we learn in verse 16,

  233. he's coming back from his work

  234. in the field at evening,

  235. and he comes into the town square,

  236. and he sees the Levite,

  237. the concubine,

  238. and their servant in the square.

  239. He engages them in conversation.

  240. And then eventually,

  241. he invites them into his home.

  242. He says in verse 20,

  243. peace be to you.

  244. I will care for all your wants.

  245. And here's what you need.

  246. It's a person not from Gibeah

  247. showing hospitality

  248. to these kind of sojourners

  249. coming through.

  250. It's a bit odd.

  251. And then comes something

  252. of an ominous warning.

  253. Only, verse 20,

  254. only do not spend the night

  255. in the square.

  256. He knows something.

  257. He knows something

  258. that the Levite,

  259. the concubine,

  260. and their servant,

  261. does not know.

  262. And so I think it was more like,

  263. peace be to you.

  264. I will care for you.

  265. He's looking at his watch.

  266. All right,

  267. you don't want to be out here

  268. in the square.

  269. Let's get in my house.

  270. And then it's in verse 22 through 28

  271. that we will see

  272. one of the most horrific scenes

  273. in your Bible.

  274. Now, I need to let you know up front,

  275. it is graphic.

  276. But I also need to let you know

  277. that it's intended

  278. to make you think

  279. of another passage

  280. in your Bible.

  281. In Genesis 19,

  282. Sodom,

  283. God sends two angels

  284. to rescue Lot

  285. and then bring judgment

  286. on Sodom and Gomorrah.

  287. And then the men

  288. of the city of Sodom

  289. surround the house

  290. and they demand

  291. to know the two men

  292. who are angels.

  293. and we see something

  294. very similar happen

  295. in verses 22 through 28.

  296. 22, as they are making

  297. their hearts merry,

  298. this is happening in Israel.

  299. This is happening

  300. in a city of the Benjamites.

  301. They have not gone to Jabez

  302. in order to be

  303. among their own.

  304. The men of the city,

  305. worthless fellows,

  306. surrounded the house,

  307. beating on the door,

  308. and they said to the old man,

  309. the master of the house,

  310. bring out the man

  311. who came into your house

  312. that we may know him.

  313. It's a demand.

  314. And it's what's called

  315. a euphemism.

  316. Have you ever heard about,

  317. you know,

  318. you're somewhere

  319. and you hear about

  320. Tim and Georgina

  321. hooking up?

  322. That hookup language

  323. is a euphemism

  324. for having sex.

  325. This phrase

  326. that we may know him

  327. is a euphemism

  328. for this gang

  329. of violent,

  330. worthless fellows

  331. having sex

  332. with the Levite.

  333. This is a threat

  334. of homosexual gang rape.

  335. Now typically,

  336. we're not exposed

  337. to homosexual gang rape

  338. outside of context

  339. of prison scenes.

  340. What's being done here

  341. is showing you

  342. just how far

  343. Israel has fallen.

  344. these men

  345. are Sodom-like men.

  346. They are

  347. Sodomite-like.

  348. This is a wicked act.

  349. In verses 23 and 24,

  350. the old man,

  351. he defends his guests.

  352. He says,

  353. no,

  354. my brothers,

  355. do not act so.

  356. Look it,

  357. wickedly

  358. since this man

  359. has come into my house.

  360. Do not do this

  361. vile thing

  362. at the end of verse 24,

  363. but against this man.

  364. Do not do

  365. this outrageous

  366. thing.

  367. There are some people

  368. in the church

  369. that claim to be Christians

  370. who would say

  371. what is vile

  372. and wicked

  373. and outrageous

  374. is not the homosexual

  375. nature of this.

  376. It is the rape of it

  377. because we don't have

  378. consenting adults.

  379. What's wrong here

  380. is the lack of consent,

  381. some people would say.

  382. And that is wrong.

  383. But what's clearly

  384. being said

  385. as wicked

  386. and vile

  387. and outrageous

  388. is the homosexual

  389. nature of this.

  390. make no mistake,

  391. the Bible is very clear

  392. on homosexuality.

  393. In Leviticus 18.22,

  394. the people of Israel

  395. are told

  396. a man cannot lie

  397. with a man

  398. nor a woman

  399. with a woman.

  400. It goes on

  401. in that same passage

  402. to talk about

  403. forbidding incest

  404. and bestiality.

  405. And then in 18.24,

  406. do you know what

  407. is written?

  408. Don't do this.

  409. Don't become like

  410. the nations around you.

  411. Romans 1

  412. in your New Testament

  413. 18-32

  414. clearly

  415. forbid homosexuality

  416. and it points

  417. to homosexuality

  418. as a sign

  419. of forsaking God

  420. and giving them up

  421. and God handing people

  422. over to their sinful desires.

  423. These men of Gibeah,

  424. these worthless fellows,

  425. were more like

  426. the men of Sodom.

  427. But the big difference is

  428. the men of Sodom

  429. didn't claim

  430. to be,

  431. to have Yahweh

  432. as their king.

  433. men.

  434. This is horrific.

  435. And it gets worse.

  436. Verse 24,

  437. the old man

  438. offers his virgin daughter

  439. and then the Levite's

  440. concubine

  441. to try to somehow

  442. satisfy the lust

  443. of this mob of men.

  444. You know what he's doing?

  445. He's trying to protect

  446. this one man's honor

  447. by giving away

  448. to women.

  449. You know what that means?

  450. He was messed up.

  451. He's trying to do

  452. what's right

  453. in his own eyes,

  454. that old man.

  455. Not just these worthless

  456. fellows in Gibeah,

  457. but the old man too.

  458. Women are not

  459. of less value

  460. than men.

  461. And then it gets

  462. just horrific.

  463. The men in 25,

  464. they don't listen.

  465. Like, no.

  466. Bang, bang, bang,

  467. bang, bang.

  468. And then the Levite,

  469. verse 26,

  470. the man

  471. pushes out

  472. his concubine.

  473. Pushes her out.

  474. Closes the door.

  475. And we read

  476. that this gang

  477. of violent men

  478. rape her

  479. all night long.

  480. A daybreak.

  481. She manages

  482. the strength

  483. to get back

  484. to the old man's house.

  485. She cannot get in.

  486. She doesn't have

  487. the strength.

  488. She's been

  489. horrifically abused.

  490. Horrifically abused.

  491. And then

  492. the next day

  493. rolls around.

  494. Verse 27.

  495. And her master,

  496. notice the language change,

  497. her master,

  498. he slept

  499. that night.

  500. What?

  501. He got up,

  502. made coffee,

  503. shaved,

  504. grabbed his briefcase,

  505. made sure he's got

  506. his day pack,

  507. and he's leaving

  508. the house

  509. to go on his way

  510. to the hill country

  511. of Ephraim,

  512. and he just happens

  513. to stumble across

  514. his concubine

  515. who's at the doorway.

  516. And notice,

  517. verse 27,

  518. with her hands

  519. on the threshold,

  520. that should get

  521. into your brain.

  522. So close.

  523. And literally,

  524. this Levite

  525. walks over her.

  526. Now,

  527. start looking back

  528. on that whole little

  529. line in verse 2

  530. about she was unfaithful

  531. to her husband,

  532. you start to wonder,

  533. hmm,

  534. callous,

  535. uncaring,

  536. treating her

  537. like some kind

  538. of meat,

  539. demeaning,

  540. and you know what?

  541. We don't know

  542. if she's dead or not.

  543. Look what he does.

  544. 28,

  545. get up,

  546. let's go!

  547. We gotta beat

  548. the morning traffic.

  549. Talk about vile.

  550. He picks her up,

  551. puts her on her donkey,

  552. and they go

  553. all the way back

  554. to the hill country

  555. of Ephraim.

  556. This is a horrific scene.

  557. Gruesome in many ways.

  558. It's gonna get

  559. even more gruesome.

  560. Now,

  561. if you were inspecting

  562. this train wreck

  563. and you see this

  564. toxic waste

  565. all over the place,

  566. you're gonna notice

  567. a couple things.

  568. There's a lack

  569. of hospitality.

  570. You notice

  571. the men of Gibeah

  572. who are

  573. Sodom-like,

  574. but they're Israelites,

  575. Canaanized.

  576. And you can't help

  577. but notice

  578. how this Levite,

  579. so callous,

  580. how he treats

  581. his concubine,

  582. he demeans her.

  583. Do you know what, gang?

  584. When we leave

  585. our first love,

  586. brothers,

  587. when we leave

  588. our first love,

  589. when we leave

  590. King Jesus,

  591. do you know

  592. who will suffer?

  593. The women

  594. in our lives.

  595. Man, don't you wish

  596. they just stopped

  597. at Jabez,

  598. the foreign town?

  599. But we're not seeing

  600. the cause

  601. of this train wreck.

  602. Scene three,

  603. holy war.

  604. this is 1929

  605. through 2048.

  606. We pick up

  607. where we left off.

  608. The Levite

  609. has put this woman,

  610. we're not sure

  611. she's dead or not.

  612. He brings her back

  613. to his house

  614. in the hill country

  615. of Ephraim

  616. and he takes out

  617. a knife

  618. and he dismembers her

  619. and he sends

  620. the members

  621. of her body

  622. all throughout Israel.

  623. Gruesome.

  624. Even in her death,

  625. he demeans her.

  626. You know what it is?

  627. It's a call to war.

  628. He goes out

  629. to all the tribes

  630. and all the tribes

  631. see this

  632. and they've never

  633. seen anything

  634. like this before.

  635. And then in chapter 20,

  636. 1 through 7,

  637. there's this

  638. holy gathering

  639. of God's people.

  640. We have not seen this

  641. in the book of Judges.

  642. Not one judge

  643. was able to do this.

  644. We have

  645. the tribes

  646. of Israel

  647. in a holy convocation

  648. coming together

  649. in Mitzpah,

  650. which is right

  651. in between

  652. the tribe

  653. of Benjamin,

  654. the land of Benjamin

  655. and the land of Ephraim.

  656. they gather

  657. as one people,

  658. one man,

  659. verse 1.

  660. Well,

  661. almost one man

  662. because in verse 3,

  663. the Benjamites

  664. hear about this

  665. and they don't go.

  666. So this is like

  667. 11 of the 12 tribes

  668. in almost

  669. unified Israel.

  670. The leaders

  671. of all these

  672. tribes

  673. that have gathered

  674. in verses 4 through 7,

  675. they want an explanation

  676. from the Levite.

  677. What's behind all this?

  678. And he tells them.

  679. In verses 4 through 7,

  680. he gives an explanation.

  681. What I want you to see

  682. is in verse 5.

  683. And he says,

  684. and the leaders

  685. of Gibeah

  686. rose against me.

  687. This is the Levite.

  688. And the leaders

  689. of Gibeah

  690. rose against me

  691. and surrounded

  692. the house against me

  693. by night.

  694. They meant to kill me

  695. and they violated

  696. my concubine

  697. and she's dead.

  698. Do you know

  699. what that is?

  700. That's keeping people

  701. from incriminating him

  702. language.

  703. language.

  704. He doesn't say

  705. how she died.

  706. And it leaves us,

  707. the readers,

  708. thinking,

  709. uh,

  710. Mr. Levite,

  711. it looks like

  712. you're leaving out

  713. something pretty

  714. significant here,

  715. which means

  716. this whole thing

  717. is under suspicion

  718. of false pretense.

  719. in verses 8 through 11,

  720. he presents,

  721. well,

  722. he presents his case

  723. in the verses 8 through 11.

  724. It gets its effect.

  725. One man responds.

  726. The whole peoples

  727. are like,

  728. yes,

  729. we're going to do this.

  730. And they call together

  731. hundreds of thousands

  732. of men to battle,

  733. 400,000.

  734. notice,

  735. nobody's calling

  736. on the Lord.

  737. Nobody.

  738. In verses 12

  739. and through 13,

  740. there's a delegate

  741. sent from these

  742. 11 tribes

  743. to Benjamin.

  744. They say,

  745. hey,

  746. would you please

  747. hand over

  748. these worthless

  749. fellows

  750. that did this

  751. terrible deed

  752. so that we can

  753. put them to death?

  754. And you know

  755. what Benjamin does?

  756. Verse 13,

  757. he says,

  758. they say,

  759. no.

  760. They're not going

  761. to give him up.

  762. Verse 14,

  763. then the people

  764. of Benjamin

  765. came together

  766. out of the cities

  767. of Gibeah

  768. to go out to battle

  769. against the people

  770. of Israel.

  771. They would not listen

  772. to the voice

  773. of their brothers.

  774. There's something

  775. wrong here.

  776. Terribly wrong.

  777. And so,

  778. in verses 14 through 17,

  779. the battle lines

  780. are formed.

  781. You have just over

  782. 26,000 Benjamites

  783. squaring off

  784. against 400,000

  785. Israelites.

  786. This, my friends,

  787. is a holy war

  788. and it is a highly

  789. ironic civil war

  790. because the Benjamins,

  791. Benjaminites,

  792. are acting

  793. like Canaanites.

  794. Israel's greatest enemy

  795. is itself.

  796. There's a three-day war

  797. that follows.

  798. Day one,

  799. 19 through 23,

  800. Israel seeks God.

  801. They go out

  802. to face

  803. the Benjamites

  804. and 22,000

  805. Israelites

  806. are killed.

  807. Day two,

  808. verses 24 through 28,

  809. after seeking God,

  810. Israel

  811. goes to battle again.

  812. The Benjamites

  813. again defeat

  814. Israel,

  815. killing 18,000

  816. Israelites.

  817. And then they respond

  818. by seeking the Lord,

  819. by weeping

  820. and fasting

  821. and they're presenting

  822. offerings

  823. and it's what

  824. they should have been

  825. doing all along

  826. at the beginning

  827. of the book.

  828. When they couldn't

  829. push out

  830. the Canaanite nations,

  831. this is what they

  832. should have been doing.

  833. Day three,

  834. Israel engages

  835. Benjamin again.

  836. This is 29 through 48.

  837. They change their tactics.

  838. They set up an ambush.

  839. The Benjamites

  840. think they're winning

  841. again

  842. and then

  843. the whole thing

  844. turns.

  845. And that day,

  846. Benjamin was decimated.

  847. In verse 44,

  848. 18,000 killed.

  849. Verse 45,

  850. 5,000 Benjamites killed.

  851. At the end of verse 45,

  852. 2,000 Benjamites fall.

  853. And so what you have left

  854. are 600 Benjamites left.

  855. Complete and utter decimation.

  856. We learn that it's

  857. verse 35,

  858. the Lord

  859. defeated Benjamin.

  860. In verse 48,

  861. and the men of Israel

  862. turned back against

  863. the people of Benjamin

  864. and struck them

  865. with the edge

  866. of the sword,

  867. the city,

  868. the men,

  869. beasts,

  870. all that they found,

  871. and all the towns

  872. that they found,

  873. they set on fire.

  874. Devoted to destruction.

  875. Holy war

  876. on itself

  877. because they've been

  878. Ganonized.

  879. Israel has become

  880. its own worst enemy.

  881. The destruction

  882. of this

  883. tribe of

  884. Benjamin

  885. is an outworking

  886. of God's

  887. justice.

  888. And you can't help

  889. but notice,

  890. if you're an inspector

  891. on this train wreck,

  892. a couple things,

  893. Benjamin refuses

  894. to listen to her brothers

  895. just as the men

  896. of Gibeah

  897. refuse to listen

  898. to the old man.

  899. We got a tribe

  900. kind of characteristic

  901. there.

  902. It's not good.

  903. And you can't help

  904. but think,

  905. this whole thing

  906. started with a big

  907. question mark.

  908. Was that Levite

  909. honest?

  910. Is this whole thing

  911. under false pretense,

  912. and yet God,

  913. God did what

  914. he wanted to do.

  915. And yet here,

  916. with civil war,

  917. we're not seeing

  918. the cause.

  919. What got him there?

  920. What's behind

  921. all this?

  922. Scene four

  923. is the aftermath.

  924. 600 wives

  925. for 600 Benjamites.

  926. There's a change

  927. of heart

  928. among the Israelites

  929. in two through four.

  930. We learn in verse

  931. one of chapter 21

  932. that they made a vow

  933. that when they had

  934. all gathered

  935. in Mitzpah,

  936. they said,

  937. we're not going back

  938. to our homes

  939. until this is all done.

  940. And by the way,

  941. vow number two

  942. is that we're not

  943. going to give our wives,

  944. any of our daughters,

  945. to these Benjamites

  946. for their wives,

  947. ensuring that they

  948. would be totally destroyed

  949. from the face

  950. of the earth.

  951. But they have a change

  952. of kind of heart.

  953. In verses two through four,

  954. six and seven,

  955. they start having compassion

  956. on Benjamin.

  957. They start asking,

  958. wait,

  959. we don't want to see them

  960. wiped off the face

  961. of the planet.

  962. So now they start

  963. asking the question,

  964. wait,

  965. how can we provide

  966. wives

  967. for these Benjamites,

  968. 600,

  969. who escaped

  970. to the wilderness,

  971. and yet preserve

  972. our word?

  973. that we don't have

  974. to break our vow?

  975. That we don't go back

  976. on what we say?

  977. It's completely ridiculous.

  978. It's like the rash vow

  979. of Jephthah.

  980. These men have vowed

  981. not to give their daughters

  982. as wives

  983. to these Benjamites,

  984. and now they're going

  985. to protect their vow

  986. at all costs.

  987. It would have been

  988. far better

  989. if they would just

  990. have confessed

  991. the foolishness

  992. of their vow

  993. and given their daughters

  994. as wives.

  995. But they don't.

  996. And what they do

  997. instead

  998. is awful.

  999. In verses eight through twelve,

  1000. they completely destroy

  1001. another Israelite city,

  1002. Jebesh Gilead,

  1003. devoting it to destruction.

  1004. And of all,

  1005. the only ones

  1006. that survived

  1007. Jebesh Gilead

  1008. were four hundred

  1009. virgin girls.

  1010. And they bring

  1011. those four hundred

  1012. virgin girls,

  1013. which they essentially

  1014. kidnapped as a result

  1015. of murder,

  1016. and they bring them

  1017. to the Benjamites,

1018. the 600 in the wilderness.

  1019. But there's 600

  1020. in the wilderness.

  1021. There's just 400

  1022. young ladies.

  1023. They're short 200.

  1024. And so,

  1025. they bring up

  1026. this other plan

  1027. where they

  1028. say,

  1029. and this is

  1030. verses 16 through 24,

  1031. they tell

  1032. this Benjamite,

  1033. hey, you know what?

  1034. There is this feast

  1035. in Shiloh.

  1036. The daughters of Shiloh

  1037. always come out

  1038. and do the dance.

  1039. You guys wait

  1040. and ambush

  1041. and then grab them

  1042. for yourselves.

  1043. And when the men

1044. of Shiloh come to us,

  1045. say,

  1046. what's going on?

  1047. We'll say,

  1048. hey,

1049. we needed to do this.

  1050. We kept you

  1051. in the dark,

  1052. men of Shiloh.

  1053. We want to preserve

  1054. our word.

  1055. It's ridiculous.

  1056. 200 women kidnapped.

  1057. 400 women kidnapped.

  1058. Hundreds of people

  1059. killed

  1060. so they can keep

  1061. their word.

  1062. They don't have to

  1063. break their vow.

  1064. They were doing

  1065. what's right

  1066. in their own eyes.

  1067. They're not consulting

1068. the Lord at any point.

  1069. They're more concerned

  1070. about preserving

  1071. their honor

  1072. than the honor

  1073. of King Yahweh.

  1074. If you're inspecting

  1075. this train wreck,

  1076. seeing the pride,

  1077. doing it,

  1078. making sure you are

  1079. keeping your honor,

1080. being right at all costs,

  1081. the killing,

  1082. the kidnapping,

  1083. you're seeing Israel

  1084. as a smoldering wreck

  1085. of a people,

  1086. and the question is,

1087. why would they do this?

  1088. How does this get

  1089. to be this?

  1090. Scene one,

1091. we have a sketchy Levite.

  1092. Scene two,

  1093. we have these

  1094. Sodom-like men.

  1095. Scene three,

  1096. we have this

  1097. holy civil war

  1098. of Benjamin

  1099. being devoted

  1100. to destruction.

  1101. Scene four is this

  1102. trying to figure out

  1103. how to damage control

  1104. according to what's

1105. right in your own eyes.

  1106. What's happened?

  1107. It's the last verse

  1108. of the entire book.

  1109. In those days,

  1110. there was no king

  1111. in Israel.

  1112. Everyone did what was

1113. right in his own eyes.

  1114. this last verse

  1115. points to

  1116. the very heart

  1117. of this train wreck.

  1118. It's apostasy.

1119. It's the people of Israel

  1120. rejecting Yahweh

  1121. as their king.

  1122. And they deny him,

  1123. they disobey him.

  1124. There may not be

  1125. a human king

  1126. in Israel,

  1127. but there is

  1128. a divine king

  1129. in Israel

  1130. and they have

  1131. totally rejected him.

  1132. They give him

  1133. lip service,

  1134. but that's about it.

  1135. You know,

  1136. when you start

  1137. looking at this

  1138. toxic waste

  1139. all over

  1140. 1920 and 21,

  1141. this compromised

  1142. spiritual leader,

  1143. the sexual abomination

  1144. of homosexual rape

  1145. and then heterosexual rape,

  1146. you see the inhospitality,

  1147. you see the peddling

  1148. of false pretense,

  1149. rash vows,

  1150. men protecting their honor

  1151. at all costs,

1152. the needless loss of life,

  1153. and throughout this story

1154. is the demeaning of women

  1155. time and time again.

1156. It's the way of the world.

  1157. It's doing what's right

  1158. in your own eyes

  1159. and it's the result

1160. of leaving your first love,

  1161. King Yahweh.

  1162. The train wreck

  1163. was caused

  1164. by Israel's unfaithfulness.

1165. And the big question is,

  1166. if Israel

  1167. became its own

  1168. worst enemy

  1169. through apostasy,

  1170. can the church,

1171. is there a train wreck

  1172. waiting to happen

  1173. for us?

  1174. Are we going to

  1175. deny and disobey

  1176. King Jesus

  1177. and have the same

  1178. kind of toxic waste

  1179. strewn about?

  1180. It's already happening.

  1181. Spiritual leaders

  1182. experiencing,

  1183. committing sexual immorality,

  1184. every three months

1185. it seems like we hear

  1186. of another pastor

  1187. who's committed

  1188. sexual immorality.

  1189. Not to mention

  1190. the plague

  1191. of pastors

  1192. succumbing to

  1193. pornography.

  1194. There's the waffling

  1195. on sexual issues

  1196. in the church.

  1197. Claiming that

  1198. homosexuality

  1199. is an acceptable

  1200. lifestyle

  1201. instead of grievous

  1202. in God's sight.

  1203. It's not good.

  1204. The men of Gibeah

  1205. and Benjamin

  1206. who wouldn't listen

  1207. to their brothers,

  1208. they don't want

  1209. to be corrected.

  1210. Even the men

  1211. of Benjamin

  1212. kind of closing

  1213. ranks around

  1214. rapists

  1215. to protect

  1216. their own.

  1217. And then there's

  1218. civil war

  1219. in the church

  1220. allowing politics

  1221. to demonize

  1222. fellow believers.

  1223. Quick to judge,

  1224. quick to spread

  1225. false rumors,

  1226. speculations,

  1227. false pretenses.

  1228. And then there's

  1229. the demeaning

  1230. of women

  1231. in the church.

  1232. We believe

  1233. the Bible

  1234. is very clear

  1235. about male

  1236. headship

  1237. in the home

  1238. and in the church

  1239. but that's not

  1240. chauvinism.

  1241. No,

  1242. we believe

  1243. male headship

  1244. is exercised

  1245. in a way

  1246. that causes

  1247. the ladies

  1248. in our life

  1249. to thrive.

  1250. Is the church

  1251. a train wreck

  1252. waiting to happen?

  1253. Yes,

  1254. we are.

  1255. If

  1256. we leave

  1257. our first love,

  1258. it's going to happen.

  1259. how do we not

  1260. become a train wreck?

  1261. The failure

  1262. of Israel

  1263. is that

  1264. they forgot

  1265. that their God

  1266. was in their midst.

  1267. There was

  1268. no king

  1269. in Israel.

  1270. In the book

  1271. of Revelation,

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  1272. chapter 1,

  1273. we have

  1274. this incredible

  1275. vision

  1276. of the risen,

  1277. radiant,

  1278. and reigning Christ

  1279. from 12

  1280. through 16.

  1281. And

  1282. John tells us

  1283. in verse 12,

  1284. then I turned

  1285. to see the voice

  1286. that was speaking

  1287. to me

  1288. and on turning

  1289. I saw seven

  1290. golden lampstands

  1291. which we know

  1292. in verse 20

  1293. are the seven churches.

  1294. And in the midst

  1295. of the lampstands,

1296. one like a son of man.

  1297. in the midst

  1298. of the lampstands,

  1299. in the midst

  1300. of the churches,

  1301. one standing

1302. like the son of man.

  1303. Do you know

  1304. who's in our midst?

  1305. The risen,

  1306. radiant,

  1307. and reigning

  1308. King Jesus.

  1309. Do you know

  1310. how we not

  1311. become a train wreck?

  1312. Do you know

  1313. how we keep ourselves

  1314. from becoming

  1315. our own worst enemy?

  1316. By keeping Jesus

  1317. as our first love.

  1318. This same Jesus

  1319. wrote seven letters

  1320. to seven churches,

  1321. chapters 2 and 3.

1322. And to the first church,

  1323. Ephesus,

  1324. he said,

1325. I have this against you,

  1326. that you have lost

  1327. your first love.

  1328. They're doing

  1329. everything right,

  1330. but they wandered

  1331. away from Jesus.

  1332. How do we become

  1333. our own worst enemy?

  1334. We will become

  1335. our own worst enemy.

  1336. We will become

  1337. a train wreck

  1338. if we leave Jesus.

1339. If we forget about him.

1340. If we let secondary things

  1341. become primary things.

  1342. So do you know

  1343. how to keep Jesus

  1344. as our first love?

1345. We cry out to him.

  1346. We confess him

  1347. as our first love.

  1348. We ask him

1349. to show us his glory.

1350. And then we open up

  1351. the Bible

  1352. and we take big,

  1353. long looks

  1354. at our king.

1355. When was the last time

  1356. you read

  1357. Revelation chapter 1?

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  1358. Revelation chapter 2 and 3?

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  1359. Revelation chapter 19?

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  1360. Take long, deep looks

  1361. at your king.

1362. We got to keep him

  1363. central.

1364. And when we keep him

  1365. central, do you know

  1366. what's going to happen?

  1367. Pastors will become

  1368. examples of sexual

  1369. faithfulness.

  1370. Churches will speak

  1371. courageously

  1372. on issues of

  1373. sexuality

  1374. and the sifting

  1375. sands of our culture.

  1376. We will welcome

  1377. rebuke.

  1378. We will

  1379. not

  1380. despise

  1381. women

  1382. brothers.

  1383. We won't

  1384. demean them.

  1385. We will

  1386. help them

  1387. thrive in

  1388. all areas.

  1389. We won't

  1390. fan the flames

  1391. of civil war

  1392. within ourselves

  1393. but pursue

  1394. peace,

  1395. unity,

  1396. maintaining the

  1397. bond of the

  1398. spirit and the

  1399. bond of peace.

  1400. King Jesus

  1401. is our answer.

  1402. He's in our

  1403. midst

  1404. and he will

  1405. keep us

  1406. from becoming

  1407. our own

  1408. worst enemy,

  1409. from keep us

  1410. becoming a

  1411. train wreck.

  1412. We've come to

  1413. the end of

  1414. Judges.

  1415. It's been one

  1416. long train wreck

  1417. of God's

  1418. old covenant

  1419. people and the

  1420. cause is apostasy.

  1421. They left

  1422. their first love.

  1423. And Judges,

  1424. it's a sober

  1425. warning.

  1426. what will

  1427. happen

  1428. if we

  1429. forget our

  1430. God.

  1431. But it

  1432. also points

  1433. us to

  1434. our perfect

  1435. king who

  1436. accomplished a

  1437. forever salvation.

  1438. He's our

  1439. first love.

  1440. He's worthy

  1441. of it.

  1442. Let's not be a

  1443. train wreck,

  1444. church.

  1445. Let's

  1446. be a

  1447. bright and

  1448. beautiful

  1449. bride

  1450. of Christ.

  1451. let's pray

  1452. together.

  1453. God in

  1454. heaven,

  1455. we thank you

  1456. for the

  1457. book of

  1458. Judges.

  1459. We thank

  1460. you that

  1461. you have

  1462. given it

  1463. to us

  1464. for our

  1465. good,

  1466. that we

  1467. can learn.

  1468. God,

  1469. would you

  1470. help us

  1471. to take

  1472. this lesson

  1473. to heart

  1474. from Israel

  1475. so that we

  1476. can remain

  1477. faithful to

  1478. you.

  1479. Lord Jesus,

  1480. you are our

  1481. king.

  1482. And you

  1483. are the same

  1484. today,

  1485. yesterday,

  1486. and forever.

  1487. Lord,

  1488. would you

  1489. not just

  1490. keep us

  1491. from becoming

  1492. a train wreck,

  1493. but God,

  1494. would you

  1495. cause us

  1496. to shine

  1497. bright in

  1498. this dark

  1499. city for

  1500. the glory

  1501. of your

  1502. name.

  1503. Amen.
