  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5, we started a series in the Beatitudes.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 962 of your Pew Bible, and I'm going to read the Beatitudes right now.

  3. We're going to focus on Matthew 5 verse 4 this morning.

    Matthew 5:4

  4. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him,

  5. just like we're coming to him this morning.

  6. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  7. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  8. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  9. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  10. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  11. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  12. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  13. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  14. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,

  15. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  16. May God bless the hearing of God's words.

  17. Amen.

  18. Any Charlie Brown fans in the room?

  19. Whoa, we got some amens?

  20. Good.

  21. We all know that Charlie Brown is a glutton for punishment.

  22. And regularly what will happen when Charlie Brown is on the receiving end of something that doesn't work out,

  23. he will lament, and he will say,

  24. Good grief.

  25. Good grief.

  26. And we all know what it's expressing.

  27. It's all, you know, he's expressing kind of like disappointment in his circumstances.

  28. But then when you look about, when you actually think about those two words, good grief,

  29. you're like, what?

  30. This is like a contradiction in terms.

  31. It's an oxymoron.

  32. What grief is good?

  33. When we think about grief or mourning,

  34. we're thinking about a deep sadness over the loss of something good.

  35. Whether it's a job,

  36. or your health,

  37. or the strain of a relationship,

  38. or even the death of a loved one.

  39. When we think about mourning,

  40. we're thinking about the loss,

  41. sadness over the loss of something good.

  42. Last week, we started this series in the Beatitudes,

  43. just to remind ourselves what it means to be a kingdom citizen living here in the fall of 2024.

  44. And last week, I walked you through the Beatitudes,

  45. and one of the points I made is that all eight of these Beatitudes,

  46. they are, it's like a kingdom profile.

  47. It's a character profile of someone who has been brought into the kingdom of heaven,

  48. into the kingdom of the beloved son.

  49. So all eight,

  50. we're to take as,

  51. to mark each of us,

  52. every Christian,

  53. is to be marked by these character traits.

  54. And today, we're looking at the character trait of mourning.

  55. Blessed are those who mourn.

  56. This mourning is a godly grief.

  57. This mourning that Jesus is talking about is lamenting over sin.

  58. Sin against God.

  59. When you're spiritually bankrupt,

  60. when you are poor in spirit,

  61. you will grieve sin.

  62. Citizens of the kingdom,

  63. they grieve what grieves God.

  64. We have a whole new value system.

  65. Now, I don't know if you realized this when you became a Christian.

  66. But when you became a Christian,

  67. you opened yourself up to a whole new kind of grief.

  68. A godly grief over sin.

  69. Sin against God.

  70. Because your whole life has shifted

  71. from orbiting yourself

  72. to orbiting the living God.

  73. So this morning,

  74. as we look at this beatitude,

  75. we're going to see two parts of it.

  76. Our good grief,

  77. blessed are those who mourn,

  78. and God's promised comfort,

  79. for they shall be comforted.

  80. The question before us this morning is,

  81. not if you mourn.

  82. We all mourn.

  83. We all grieve.

  84. We're living in a sin-riddled world.

  85. The question is,

  86. do you grieve what grieves God?

  87. And is there anything in you today

  88. that is grieving,

  89. offending the living God?

  90. Charlie Brown.

  91. Charlie Brown.

  92. Turns out there is a good grief.

  93. It's called godly grief.

  94. And let's look at it.

  95. Blessed are those who mourn.

  96. That word blessed

  97. shows up a number of times

  98. in the Beatitudes,

  99. nine times all the way through verse 11.

  100. And it's Jesus announcing blessing

  101. on all those people

  102. who are demonstrating

  103. these character traits

  104. because they have been delivered

  105. from the domain of darkness

  106. and transferred into his kingdom,

  107. the kingdom of the beloved son.

  108. These are people who have received

  109. God's transforming grace

  110. and have been moved

  111. under the saving reign of Jesus.

  112. Jesus.

  113. These are graced people.

  114. These blessings.

  115. This is God's goodness

  116. to these people

  117. who have received

  118. the new covenant blessing

  119. of being in Christ.

  120. And so what I want you to help you understand

  121. is when we read

  122. blessed are those who mourn,

  123. this mourner

  124. in chapter 5 verse 4

  125. is a kingdom citizen.

  126. They are grieved

  127. over what grieves God.

  128. And what I want to try

  129. to convince you of this morning

  130. is this.

  131. For you, Christian,

  132. that's normal.

  133. It's normal

  134. for kingdom citizens

  135. to grieve that which grieves God.

  136. It's normal.

  137. So these blessed ones

  138. are those who've been graced by God,

  139. who've been brought into his kingdom,

  140. who share God's heart,

  141. particularly when it comes to sin.

  142. Sin in them

  143. and sin outside of them.

  144. So what kind of mourning

  145. is this exactly?

  146. What are we talking about here?

  147. Well, last week we saw

  148. blessed are the poor in spirit

  149. and that poor in spirit,

  150. you're poor in spirit

  151. in relationship to God.

  152. And it carries down

  153. into verse 4.

  154. That we are mourning something,

  155. we're grieving something,

  156. we're lamenting something

  157. in relationship to God.

  158. This is a godly sorrow

  159. over sin.

  160. That word sin

  161. tends to take a bum rap

  162. in our culture today.

  163. Dismissive.

  164. Biblically speaking,

  165. it means missing the mark.

  166. Imagine

  167. an Olympic archer

  168. pulling back the string,

  169. releasing an arrow

  170. at the target,

  171. and that arrow

  172. just missing the bullseye

  173. by two centimeters.

  174. That's missing the mark.

  175. If they miss the mark

  176. by two feet,

  177. it's missing the mark.

  178. What sin is,

  179. is missing the mark

  180. of God's character

  181. in His command.

  182. It's not believing Him

  183. or obeying Him.

  184. And biblically speaking,

  185. everyone sins.

  186. For all have sinned

  187. and fall short

  188. of the glory of God.

  189. For all have missed the mark

  190. and come up short

  191. of God's perfection.

  192. Sin is a human problem.

  193. And I just want to remind you

  194. when talking about sin,

  195. that sin,

  196. just one,

  197. will condemn you

  198. to an eternal punishment

  199. apart from God.

  200. Because when we sin,

  201. we sin against

  202. an eternal,

  203. holy,

  204. and just God.

  205. for the wages of sin

  206. is death,

  207. eternal death,

  208. God's wrath

  209. for eternity.

  210. Sin is serious business

  211. in God's sight.

  212. I want to ask you

  213. just to evaluate yourself.

  214. have you recently

  215. given thought

  216. to how offensive

  217. and grievous

  218. your sin is to God?

  219. Let me point to a couple things

  220. that will help that.

  221. Think about sin's punishment,

  222. which I just referenced.

  223. in John 3, 36,

  224. we read this,

  225. whoever believes in the Son

  226. has eternal life,

  227. whoever does not obey the Son

  228. shall not see life,

  229. but the wrath of God

  230. remains on him.

  231. When you think about

  232. the punishment of sin

  233. being God's eternal,

  234. just,

  235. tormenting wrath,

  236. it should make you think

  237. sin is serious business

  238. in God's sight.

  239. But,

  240. and then when you think

  241. of sin's solution

  242. that God provided,

  243. John 3, 16,

  244. for God so loved the world

  245. that he gave his only Son

  246. that whoever believes in him

  247. shall not experience

  248. the eternal wrath of God,

  249. but have eternal life.

  250. When you think

  251. that what God did

  252. in order to rescue sinners

  253. from their sin against him,

  254. that he became a man,

  255. that he lived a perfect life,

  256. that he died on the cross

  257. and bore God's wrath

  258. for all of our sin,

  259. for anyone who would believe,

  260. so that there's no more wrath.

  261. And then he was raised

  262. from the dead.

  263. What is this

  264. that God would do

  265. such a thing for sinners?

  266. It's getting at

  267. the seriousness of sin.

  268. Let me try to push this home

  269. a little bit more.

  270. Imagine with me.

  271. Do you know right now

  272. on the seventh floor

  273. of the Museum of Modern Art

  274. in New York City,

  275. there is Van Gogh's

  276. Starry Night?

  277. Do you know what I'm talking about?

  278. Do you know what the painting

  279. I'm talking about?

  280. It's a masterpiece

  281. worth millions.

  282. Let's say that

  283. the Museum of Modern Art

  284. calls up the Salvati's

  285. and they're like,

  286. hey, Mike and Jenny,

  287. do you want to hang Starry Night

  288. in your living room

  289. for a little bit?

  290. And we're like,

  291. yeah, sure, okay, yeah.

  292. So they bring it on,

  293. we hang it in our living room

  294. and then I invite everybody

  295. from our church

  296. to come take a look

  297. at Starry Night.

  298. So you come over

  299. on a Saturday morning,

  300. but you stop off

  301. at Oliver's

  302. on your way here

  303. to our house

  304. and you pick up

  305. your favorite jelly donut

  306. with raspberry jelly.

  307. You walk into our house,

  308. you walk up to Starry Night

  309. with your donut in hand,

  310. you're like,

  311. hmm, yes, yes, yes,

  312. it's just speaking to me,

  313. yes, yes, yes.

  314. You take a bite

  315. of your donut

  316. and it squirts

  317. raspberry jelly

  318. all over Starry Night.

  319. You're like, oops.

  320. You kind of sneak your way

  321. into the kitchen,

  322. you grab some paper towels,

  323. you come back to Starry Night

  324. and you proceed

  325. to wipe your raspberry jelly

  326. all into Starry Night.

  327. Everybody in the room

  328. who knows Starry Night's value,

  329. it's a masterpiece,

  330. they are mourning

  331. and grieving, right?

  332. Because you've just

  333. utterly defaced

  334. something of incredible

  335. worth and beauty.

  336. What makes that act

  337. so grievous

  338. is not your jelly.

  339. It's the work of art.

  340. When we sin against God,

  341. our little jelly squirts,

  342. we're sinning

  343. against the most glorious,

  344. treasured being

  345. in all of creation.

  346. Listen.

  347. Brothers and sisters,

  348. our problem is not

  349. that we take sin

  350. too seriously.

  351. We don't take it

  352. seriously enough.

  353. And that has everything

  354. to do

  355. with how we think

  356. about God.

  357. We have a man-centered

  358. view of God,

  359. of our sin,

  360. a man-centered view

  361. of our sin.

  362. And what we need

  363. is a God-centered view.

  364. He's the masterpiece,

  365. the treasure

  366. above all else.

  367. And when we see

  368. our sin against Him,

  369. we will grieve.

  370. We will mourn.

  371. Because we're gaining

  372. His heart.

  373. We need a God-centered

  374. view of our sin.

  375. One of my favorite

  376. preachers and writers

  377. is John Piper.

  378. And he gave a talk

  379. called,

  380. What is Sin?

  381. Listen to what he wrote.

  382. My definition of sinning

  383. is,

  384. sinning is any feeling

  385. or thought

  386. or speech

  387. or action

  388. that comes from

  389. a heart

  390. that does not

  391. treasure God

  392. over all things.

  393. In the bottom of sin,

  394. the root of all sinning

  395. is such a heart,

  396. a heart that prefers

  397. anything above God.

  398. A heart that does not

  399. treasure God

  400. over all persons

  401. and all other things.

  402. What is sin?

  403. Sin is,

  404. follow this,

  405. the glory of God

  406. not honored,

  407. the holiness of God

  408. not reverenced,

  409. the greatness of God

  410. not admired,

  411. the power of God

  412. not praised,

  413. the truth of God

  414. not sought,

  415. the wisdom of God

  416. not esteemed,

  417. the beauty of God

  418. not treasured,

  419. the goodness of God

  420. not savored,

  421. the faithfulness of God

  422. not trusted,

  423. the promises of God

  424. not believed,

  425. the commandments of God

  426. not obeyed,

  427. the justice of God

  428. not respected,

  429. the wrath of God

  430. not feared,

  431. the grace of God

  432. not cherished,

  433. the presence of God

  434. not prized,

  435. the person of God

  436. not loved.

  437. what John Piper does for us

  438. is he helps us think about our sin

  439. against God, the center of all things.

  440. This is a biblical view of our sin.

  441. A God-centered view of our sin.

  442. But what about sin in you?

  443. If you're a Christian in the room,

  444. according to Galatians 5, 16 and 17,

  445. when you were converted,

  446. things got interesting.

  447. Because now you have a conflict of interest

  448. within yourself.

  449. You have your flesh,

  450. the desires of your flesh,

  451. wanting to do sinful things,

  452. and you've got the Holy Spirit of God living in you,

  453. the desires of the Spirit,

  454. wanting to form,

  455. he wants to form in you

  456. good God-glorifying things.

  457. And so there's this conflict within us

  458. did you know, Christian,

  459. that you are simultaneously justified and sinful

  460. at the same time?

  461. Declared righteous in God's sight,

  462. and yet we have a sinful nature?

  463. You know what the question becomes?

  464. Here's the question.

  465. Do you have a godly sorrow

  466. over the pride in you presently?

  467. Over the lust in you?

  468. Over the greed in you?

  469. The gossip?

  470. The hate?

  471. The lack of self-control?

  472. The question becomes,

  473. how does God see these things in you?

  474. How does he feel about these things in you?

  475. Ephesians 4.30 says,

  476. do not grieve the Holy Spirit

  477. who has sealed you for the day of redemption.

  478. Do not grieve him by sinning.

  479. I don't know what's happening in you right now

  480. hearing this.

  481. I hope it goes something like this.

  482. God, would you help me

  483. to see and feel

  484. about my sin in me

  485. the way that you see and feel

  486. about the sin in me?

  487. Would you show me?

  488. Would you grieve me?

  489. Would you burden me?

  490. Would you help me to see

  491. my utter bankruptcy in your sight

  492. so that I can mourn it?

  493. When God lovingly convicts

  494. his sons or daughters of their sins,

  495. you can say,

  496. I am a blessed child of God.

  497. You know why?

  498. Because God,

  499. your heavenly loving Father,

  500. is at work in you

  501. so that you can share

  502. in his blessed holiness.

  503. It is a good thing

  504. that you grieve your sin.

  505. It's a good thing.

  506. And if you're new

  507. to the Christian faith,

  508. I want to help you

  509. set your expectations right.

  510. Because as you grow

  511. as a Christian,

  512. you don't grieve less.

  513. You grieve more.

  514. because you start seeing

  515. the utter effect of sin

  516. in your life.

  517. And as you get to know

  518. your God more and more,

  519. you start realizing,

  520. oh, this sin in me

  521. must be grievous in his sight.

  522. He's so holy and good and just.

  523. And so the reasoning goes,

  524. Christian,

  525. if you're maturing in Christ,

  526. you're not going to be

  527. less grievous of your sin.

  528. You're going to be more

  529. as you become more and more holy.

  530. But what happens

  531. if you don't grieve your sin?

  532. What happens if you don't care?

  533. Well, that probably means

  534. you're not a kingdom.

  535. You're not in the kingdom of Jesus.

  536. And what you need to hear

  537. is that you need to cry out to God

  538. and say, oh God,

  539. would you burden me?

  540. Help me to see my sin.

  541. Take it seriously as you see it

  542. so I can run to Jesus.

  543. Or maybe you are a Christian

  544. not taking their sin seriously.

  545. We've seen that.

  546. We saw that in the book of Judges.

  547. God's people being canonized,

  548. becoming like the world.

  549. When you become like the world,

  550. you're not going to grieve

  551. what grieves God.

  552. You're going to do

  553. what's right in your own eyes.

  554. You're not going to seek

  555. to do what is right

  556. in God's eyes.

  557. And so if you're a Christian

  558. in the room

  559. and you're like,

  560. man, I'm not grieved.

  561. Well, is it because

  562. you've just been canonized?

  563. And that's something

  564. to repent of.

  565. God, forgive me

  566. for living according

  567. to the world's values,

  568. not yours.

  569. Brothers and sisters,

  570. this is our good grief

  571. of being a kingdom citizen.

  572. We're sharing in God's heart

  573. towards sin in us

  574. and outside of us.

  575. This is normal,

  576. brothers and sisters.

  577. This is normal

  578. for those in the kingdom.

  579. But I want to move now

  580. from our good grief

  581. to God's comforting promise.

  582. Blessed are those who mourn,

  583. for theirs is the kingdom.

  584. Oops, for theirs,

  585. for they shall be comforted.

  586. Amen.

  587. Time out.

  588. I forgot something.

  589. And it's important.

  590. Before we move on

  591. to the promised comfort,

  592. which I think a lot of you

  593. want to move on to right now,

  594. I need you to help you

  595. think about something.

  596. I want to introduce you

  597. to the idea of lament.

  598. C.S. Lewis

  599. has written

  600. a commentary on the Psalms.

  601. I was given this

  602. by a friend this past week.

  603. And C.S. Lewis writes,

  604. I think we delight to praise

  605. what we enjoy

  606. because the praise

  607. not merely expresses

  608. but completes the enjoyment.

  609. It is its appointed

  610. consummation.

  611. So when we in the congregation

  612. are gathered

  613. and we're dwelling upon

  614. these glorious truths of God,

  615. we're just delighting it,

  616. we're enjoying it,

  617. that it's not complete

  618. until we sing

  619. his praises together.

  620. Then it's complete.

  621. You see my point?

  622. See what he's writing?

  623. Applied to mourning

  624. of sin.

  625. Applied to

  626. godly grief.

  627. The appointed

  628. consummation

  629. of godly grief

  630. when you're seeing

  631. sin in you

  632. or outside of you

  633. is what the Bible

  634. calls lament.

  635. It brings closure.

  636. It brings expression.

  637. And it's always

  638. in the minor key.

  639. It's not always

  640. fun to sing.

  641. It's not always

  642. fun to speak

  643. because it's a sadness.

  644. In your Bibles

  645. there are different

  646. kinds of laments.

  647. There's personal lament.

  648. Psalm 13.

  649. Psalm 51.

  650. When

  651. David sins

  652. adultery

  653. with Bathsheba

  654. then kills

  655. her husband Uriah

  656. to cover it up.

  657. He writes

  658. Psalm 51

  659. and in verse 4

  660. he says

  661. in this lament

  662. to God

  663. against you

  664. God

  665. and you alone

  666. have I sinned.

  667. That's a God

  668. centered view

  669. of his sin

  670. operating.

  671. And that's

  672. a personal lament.

  673. And so personal lament

  674. is giving expression

  675. to godly grief.

  676. It contains confession.

  677. But you're expressing

  678. your sorrow

  679. over your grief

  680. for what you've done

  681. in God's eyes.

  682. Not only is there

  683. personal lament

  684. there is corporate lament.

  685. And just as a

  686. point of reference

  687. would you just write

  688. if you're taking notes

  689. Ezra chapter 9

    Ezra 9 chapter mention

  690. and 10.

  691. Take a look at that.

  692. God's people

  693. are intermarrying

  694. Ezra

  695. one of the leaders

  696. of God's people

  697. he actually

  698. prays a prayer

  699. of lament

  700. not for his sin

  701. but for the people's sin

  702. and then the people

  703. join in

  704. in chapter 10

  705. and there's all this

  706. weeping going on

  707. do you know

  708. what that means?

  709. It's corporate

  710. lament

  711. for their sin.

  712. And then there's

  713. the Jesus lament.

  714. in Luke 19

  715. Jesus has just

  716. entered Jerusalem

  717. and we read this

  718. and when he drew near

  719. and saw the city

  720. he wept over it

  721. saying

  722. would that you

  723. even you

  724. had known on this day

  725. the things that make

  726. for peace

  727. but now they are

  728. hidden from your eyes

  729. the things that make

  730. for peace

  731. Jesus was referring

  732. to himself

  733. they didn't recognize him

  734. for the days

  735. will come upon you

  736. when your enemies

  737. will set up a barricade

  738. around you

  739. and surround you

  740. and hem you in

  741. on every side

  742. and tear you down

  743. to the ground

  744. you and your children

  745. within you

  746. and they will not

  747. leave one stone

  748. upon another

  749. in you

  750. because you did not

  751. know the time

  752. of your visitation

  753. Jesus is lamenting

  754. over Jerusalem

  755. that he has come

  756. and they don't

  757. recognize him

  758. and now salvation

  759. is going to pass them by

  760. and judgment's

  761. going to come.

  762. Jesus weeps

  763. and pronounces this

  764. lament

  765. how many

  766. don't show your hands

  767. but how many

  768. in this room

  769. have friends

  770. and family

  771. we love

  772. that at present

  773. have rejected

  774. Jesus

  775. they have not seen

  776. the time of his

  777. visitation as of yet

  778. and so God's wrath

  779. hangs over them

  780. my friends

  781. don't hate them

  782. grieve them

  783. grieve

  784. what is happening

  785. there's another

  786. lament

  787. in Psalm 119

  788. 136

  789. where the

  790. psalmist says

  791. I cry

  792. streams

  793. of tears

  794. because

  795. this people

  796. does not

  797. obey your

  798. commandments

  799. so brothers

  800. and sisters

  801. when we

  802. become aware

  803. of the murdering

  804. of image bearers

  805. in the womb

  806. and we

  807. know

  808. the command

  809. thou shall not

  810. murder

  811. we grieve

  812. that

  813. because it grieves

  814. God

  815. when we see

  816. men marrying

  817. men

  818. and women

  819. marrying women

  820. we grieve

  821. that

  822. because that's

  823. not God's

  824. design

  825. one man

  826. one woman

  827. for life

  828. under God

  829. when we

  830. see the

  831. confusion

  832. of biological

  833. men

  834. thinking that

  835. they're women

  836. and biological

  837. women thinking

  838. confused that

  839. they're men

  840. that's not

  841. God's will

  842. and design

  843. we grieve

  844. that confusion

  845. and chaos

  846. and cry out

  847. to God

  848. when a hurricane

  849. like Helena

  850. rips through

  851. our nation

  852. when tornadoes

  853. and floods

  854. and forest fires

  855. wreak havoc

  856. and bring death

  857. and we see

  858. sin's

  859. distorting effect

  860. on God's

  861. created order

  862. we grieve

  863. that

  864. it's not the way

  865. it's supposed to be

  866. God's sovereign

  867. over all these

  868. things

  869. we lament

  870. it

  871. oh God

  872. have mercy

  873. Thomas Watson

  874. Puritan

  875. said this

  876. till sin

  877. be bitter

  878. Christ

  879. will not

  880. be

  881. sweet

  882. and the way

  883. that you learn

  884. to grieve

  885. your sin

  886. is to grieve

  887. it in light

  888. of who

  889. God

  890. is

  891. and you learn

  892. to lament

  893. you learn

  894. to lament

  895. now to the

  896. promised comfort

  897. we fly

  898. blessed are those

  899. who mourn

  900. what a glorious

  901. promise

  902. for they shall

  903. be comforted

  904. glorious promise

  905. when you

  906. are grieving

  907. your sin

  908. when you

  909. are grieving

  910. the sins

  911. of those

  912. around you

  913. the sins

  914. of our culture

  915. the sin

  916. affected

  917. created order

  918. when we're

  919. grieving

  920. these things

  921. take heart

  922. be comforted

  923. there's a promise

  924. promise

  925. says

  926. don't you want

  927. to know

  928. this is a

  929. comfort from

  930. God

  931. brothers and

  932. sisters

  933. in our

  934. grieving

  935. when we

  936. grieve

  937. what God

  938. grieves

  939. we are

  940. comforted

  941. by God's

  942. promise

  943. promise

  944. and I

  945. hope you

  946. see in

  947. this

  948. passage

  949. in verse

  950. 4

  951. for they

  952. shall be

  953. comforted

  954. is a

  955. future

  956. promise

  957. let me

  958. aim you

  959. at this

  960. future

  961. promise

  962. in

  963. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  964. chapter

  965. 21

  966. Zach

  967. made

  968. reference

  969. it

  970. this past

  971. week

  972. in the

  973. word of

  974. encouragement

  975. let me

  976. read it

  977. to you

  978. be

  979. encouraged

  980. grievous

  981. ones

  982. mourners

  983. of the

  984. kingdom

  985. be

  986. encouraged

  987. then I

  988. saw a

  989. new heaven

  990. and a

  991. new earth

  992. for the

  993. first heaven

  994. and the

  995. first earth

  996. had passed

  997. away and

  998. the sea

  999. was no

  1000. more

  1001. and I

  1002. saw the

  1003. holy city

  1004. new

  1005. Jerusalem

  1006. coming down

  1007. out of

  1008. heaven

  1009. from God

  1010. prepared

  1011. as a

  1012. bride

  1013. adorned

  1014. for her

  1015. husband

  1016. and I

  1017. heard a

  1018. loud voice

  1019. from the

  1020. throne

  1021. saying

  1022. what are

  1023. you

  1024. saying

  1025. what's

  1026. going to

  1027. be

  1028. said

  1029. behold

  1030. the

  1031. dwelling

  1032. place of

  1033. God

  1034. is with

  1035. man

  1036. he

  1037. will

  1038. dwell

  1039. with

  1040. them

  1041. and they

  1042. will be

  1043. his

  1044. people

  1045. and God

  1046. himself

  1047. will be

  1048. with them

  1049. as their

  1050. God

  1051. he

  1052. will wipe

  1053. every tear

  1054. from their

  1055. eyes

  1056. and death

  1057. shall be

  1058. no more

  1059. neither

  1060. there shall

  1061. be

  1062. mourning

  1063. nor crying

  1064. nor pain

  1065. anymore

  1066. for the

  1067. former things

  1068. have passed

  1069. away

  1070. we have

  1071. a promise

  1072. of a new

  1073. heavens

  1074. and a new

  1075. earth

  1076. and with

  1077. the new

  1078. heavens

  1079. and the new

  1080. earth

  1081. comes a

  1082. new

  1083. reality

  1084. there's no

  1085. more mourning

  1086. no more

  1087. no more

  1088. crying

  1089. no more

  1090. pain

  1091. do you

  1092. know why

  1093. there's

  1094. no more

  1095. sin

  1096. not even

  1097. in you

  1098. you'll have

  1099. a new

  1100. resurrected

  1101. body

  1102. none of

  1103. that

  1104. no more

  1105. but that's

  1106. not the

  1107. best part

  1108. it's like

  1109. the gospel

  1110. the goodness

  1111. of the gospel

  1112. is God

  1113. look who

  1114. it is

  1115. it's God

  1116. himself

  1117. wiping away

  1118. the tears

  1119. from your

  1120. face

  1121. it's his

  1122. presence

  1123. when faith

  1124. turns to

  1125. sight

  1126. we see

  1127. him

  1128. face

  1129. to face

  1130. we will

  1131. be in

  1132. his

  1133. presence

  1134. we will

  1135. hear his

  1136. audible

  1137. voice

  1138. we will

  1139. smell

  1140. him

  1141. and be

  1142. with him

  1143. are you

  1144. mourning

  1145. sin

  1146. oh

  1147. be comforted

  1148. by that

  1149. promise

  1150. we're one

  1151. day closer

  1152. my friends

  1153. do you know

  1154. what that's

  1155. called

  1156. that's

  1157. called

  1158. hope

  1159. hope

  1160. is this

  1161. forward

  1162. looking

  1163. faith

  1164. in the

  1165. future

  1166. fulfillment

  1167. of God's

  1168. promise

  1169. that's

  1170. hope

  1171. and when

  1172. we are

  1173. grieving

  1174. our sin

  1175. against

  1176. God

  1177. we need

  1178. that kind

  1179. of hope

  1180. and he

  1181. gives it

  1182. that's a

  1183. comfort from

  1184. God

  1185. that's a

  1186. future

  1187. promise

  1188. friends

  1189. that's the

  1190. text

  1191. let me give

  1192. you a

  1193. present

  1194. promise

  1195. Jesus

  1196. at the

  1197. end of

  1198. the

  1199. great

  1200. commission

  1201. says

  1202. go make

  1203. disciples

  1204. and he

  1205. closes it

  1206. with a

  1207. promise

  1208. he says

  1209. lo I am

  1210. with you

  1211. always

  1212. even to

  1213. the end

  1214. of the

  1215. age

  1216. so not

  1217. only is

  1218. God's

  1219. promised

  1220. future

  1221. his

  1222. presence

  1223. God's

  1224. promise

  1225. now

  1226. is his

  1227. presence

  1228. and he

  1229. manifests

  1230. his presence

  1231. to us

  1232. right now

  1233. not

  1234. physically

  1235. you don't

  1236. smell him

  1237. you don't

  1238. hear him

  1239. audibly

  1240. you're not

  1241. feeling he's

  1242. kind of hand

  1243. wiping away

  1244. your tears

  1245. he's manifested

  1246. in us

  1247. by his

  1248. Holy Spirit

  1249. but there's

  1250. more

  1251. if right

  1252. now

  1253. you are

  1254. overwhelmed

  1255. by your

  1256. own

  1257. sinfulness

  1258. Christian

  1259. you're like

  1260. I have

  1261. not been

  1262. wanting

  1263. to look

  1264. at this

  1265. sin trash

  1266. in me

  1267. because I

  1268. don't want

  1269. to deal

  1270. with it

  1271. and I

  1272. certainly

  1273. don't want

  1274. to go

  1275. to God

  1276. with it

  1277. if that's

  1278. you

  1279. oh I've

  1280. got a

  1281. promise

  1282. for you

  1283. God's

  1284. word

  1285. has a

  1286. promise

  1287. for you

  1288. it's

  1289. the promise

  1290. of justification

  1291. it's

  1292. it's

  1293. this

  1294. promise

  1295. that if

  1296. you put

  1297. your faith

  1298. in Jesus

  1299. Christ

  1300. you have

  1301. peace

  1302. with God

  1303. because he's

  1304. declared you

  1305. righteous in his

  1306. sight

  1307. all of

  1308. your sin

  1309. has been

  1310. forgiven

  1311. because all

  1312. of God's

  1313. wrath has

  1314. been poured

  1315. out on

  1316. your sin

  1317. so that

  1318. there's no

  1319. more wrath

  1320. there's

  1321. there's

  1322. therefore

  1323. now no

  1324. condemnation

  1325. no more

  1326. wrath for

  1327. those who

  1328. are in

  1329. Christ

  1330. Jesus

  1331. and not

  1332. just that

  1333. you have

  1334. been imputed

  1335. with the

  1336. righteousness

  1337. of Christ

  1338. you stand

  1339. before

  1340. God

  1341. righteous in

  1342. his sight

  1343. with Christ's

  1344. righteousness

  1345. and so

  1346. you have

  1347. hope

  1348. that you

  1349. can stand

  1350. before the

  1351. judge

  1352. without being

  1353. condemned

  1354. because of

  1355. the finished

  1356. work of

  1357. Jesus

  1358. he's

  1359. declared

  1360. you

  1361. righteous

  1362. in his

  1363. sight

  1364. receive that

  1365. promise

  1366. live in that

  1367. promise

  1368. it doesn't

  1369. mean you

  1370. don't own

  1371. your sin

  1372. it means you

  1373. freely go to

  1374. the throne

  1375. of grace

  1376. with your

  1377. sin

  1378. what's being

  1379. promised

  1380. in Matthew

  1381. 5

  1382. 4

  1383. is the

  1384. future

  1385. presence

  1386. of our

  1387. Lord Jesus

  1388. in a new

  1389. heavens

  1390. in a new

  1391. earth

  1392. when there's

  1393. no more

  1394. sin

  1395. but there's

  1396. also the

  1397. present

  1398. presence

  1399. present

  1400. promise

  1401. he's with

  1402. us

  1403. our sins

  1404. are not

  1405. over our

  1406. heads

  1407. anymore

  1408. but there's

  1409. coming a

  1410. day my

  1411. friends

  1412. when there's

  1413. no more

  1414. hurricane

  1415. helenas

  1416. there's no

  1417. more contentious

  1418. presidential

  1419. elections

  1420. there's no

  1421. more abortions

  1422. there's no

  1423. more sexual

  1424. sins

  1425. there's no

  1426. more identity

  1427. chaos

  1428. there's no

  1429. more threat

  1430. from creation

  1431. itself

  1432. because it's

  1433. all been

  1434. completely

  1435. done

  1436. with

  1437. so now

  1438. we

  1439. we lament

  1440. with

  1441. hope

  1442. secure

  1443. in these

  1444. promises

  1445. when we

  1446. take sin

  1447. seriously

  1448. because God

  1449. takes sin

  1450. seriously

  1451. we lament

  1452. we give

  1453. voice to

  1454. that

  1455. by lamenting

  1456. it

  1457. but we

  1458. also

  1459. stand

  1460. upon

  1461. these

  1462. promises

  1463. our

  1464. good

  1465. grief

  1466. blessed

  1467. are those

  1468. who

  1469. mourn

  1470. God's

  1471. promise

  1472. comfort

  1473. for they

  1474. shall be

  1475. comforted

  1476. as a

  1477. Christian

  1478. as a

  1479. citizen

  1480. of Christ's

  1481. kingdom

  1482. living in

  1483. the sin

  1484. riddled

  1485. world

  1486. you will

  1487. mourn

  1488. the devastation

  1489. and offense

  1490. of sin

  1491. as you

  1492. get to

  1493. know your

  1494. God

  1495. and as

  1496. you see

  1497. your sin

  1498. more

  1499. accurately

  1500. but you

  1501. will do

  1502. so with

  1503. hope

  1504. in God's

  1505. promises

  1506. and be

  1507. blessed

  1508. he's wiped

  1509. away the

  1510. penalty of

  1511. your sin

  1512. and he

  1513. will wipe

  1514. away every

  1515. tear

  1516. from your

  1517. eye

  1518. blessed

  1519. are those

  1520. who mourn

  1521. for they

  1522. will be

  1523. comforted

  1524. this is

  1525. no

  1526. Charlie Brown

  1527. good grief

  1528. this is

  1529. the grief

  1530. the blessed

  1531. grief

  1532. of a

  1533. citizen

  1534. of the

  1535. kingdom

  1536. God in

  1537. heaven

  1538. Father God

  1539. we come

  1540. to you

  1541. now

  1542. and we

  1543. come to

  1544. you

  1545. with honest

  1546. hearts

  1547. we come

  1548. to you

  1549. acknowledging

  1550. the sin

  1551. at work

  1552. in us

  1553. still

  1554. we all

  1555. have sinful

  1556. natures

  1557. still

  1558. we grieve

  1559. our pride

  1560. we grieve

  1561. our lust

  1562. we grieve

  1563. our words

  1564. that we

  1565. speak

  1566. in anger

  1567. we grieve

  1568. these things

  1569. God

  1570. we grieve

  1571. the way

  1572. that instead

  1573. of loving

  1574. one another

  1575. we hate

  1576. each other

  1577. how we

  1578. avoid

  1579. each other

  1580. we grieve

  1581. these things

  1582. God

  1583. we grieve

  1584. the American

  1585. church

  1586. and how

  1587. the American

  1588. church

  1589. takes you

  1590. so lightly

  1591. how we

  1592. are

  1593. infrequently

  1594. considering

  1595. the glory

  1596. of your

  1597. name

  1598. how we

  1599. belittle

  1600. you

  1601. and how

  1602. casual

  1603. we are

  1604. when it

  1605. comes to

  1606. you

  1607. God

  1608. we grieve

  1609. this

  1610. we

  1611. grieve

  1612. along the

  1613. lines of

  1614. Isaiah 520

  1615. our culture

  1616. which is

  1617. calling evil

  1618. good and

  1619. good evil

  1620. we grieve

  1621. that

  1622. we

  1623. we grieve

  1624. those who

  1625. put darkness

  1626. for light

  1627. and light

  1628. for darkness

  1629. who put bitter

  1630. for sweet

  1631. and sweet

  1632. for bitter

  1633. oh God

  1634. we grieve

  1635. this in our

  1636. culture

  1637. we grieve

  1638. this in our

  1639. city

  1640. we grieve

  1641. over the

  1642. children who

  1643. are traumatized

  1644. in the

  1645. neighborhoods

  1646. around this

  1647. building

  1648. who are

  1649. growing up

  1650. in contexts

  1651. that are

  1652. just so

  1653. difficult

  1654. we grieve

  1655. these things

  1656. God

  1657. and we

  1658. call upon

  1659. you to

  1660. bring about

  1661. a gospel

  1662. change

  1663. in us

  1664. in the

  1665. American

  1666. church

  1667. in the

  1668. neighborhoods

  1669. surrounding

  1670. this building

  1671. the people

  1672. in our

  1673. lives

  1674. oh God

  1675. would you

  1676. use us

  1677. to bring

  1678. hope

  1679. God

  1680. we

  1681. acknowledge

  1682. this

  1683. promise

  1684. of yours

  1685. of a

  1686. future

  1687. comfort

  1688. God

  1689. would you

  1690. press that

  1691. in deep

  1692. into our

  1693. hearts

  1694. we

  1695. God

  1696. take great

  1697. hope

  1698. in knowing

  1699. Lord Jesus

  1700. you are

  1701. with us

  1702. that we

  1703. are justified

  1704. would you

  1705. press these

  1706. things deep

  1707. within our

  1708. hearts

  1709. as we

  1710. see our

  1711. own

  1712. sin

  1713. God

  1714. we

  1715. are

  1716. your

  1717. mourners

  1718. and we

  1719. are so

  1720. thankful

  1721. for your

  1722. comfort

  1723. and we

  1724. pray this

  1725. all in

  1726. Jesus name

  1727. Amen
