  1. All right, children are free to go to their classes now, and please open your Bible to

  2. Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  3. And if you do have a Bible, please open it.

  4. We're going to be bouncing all around the gospel of Matthew, and I hope you're able

  5. to see it for yourself.

  6. And forgive me if I cough a little bit as I go along.

  7. Matthew chapter 5, verses 1 through 12.

    Matthew 5:1–12

  8. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to

  9. him.

  10. And he opened his mouth, and he taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for

  11. theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  12. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  13. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  14. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  15. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  16. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  17. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  18. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  19. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you

  20. falsely on my account.

  21. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets

  22. who were before you.

  23. We're in the Beatitudes.

  24. And our Beatitude for this morning is verse 6.

  25. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  26. So before we look at that, I want to say just a couple things about what we're doing here to

  27. remind us of why we're in the Beatitudes.

  28. I work at Chick-fil-A.

  29. We have a few Chick-fil-A people here as well.

  30. And at Chick-fil-A we have something called the Core Four.

  31. It's how we want every team member to engage with every guest every time.

  32. The Core Four is make eye contact, smile, speak enthusiastically, and always say my pleasure.

  33. And occasionally we'll have a team member who kind of says something like, you know, just

  34. smiling is not really who I am.

  35. I'm not much of an enthusiastic person.

  36. And the response they get is, well, if smiling is not really who you are, then you don't really

  37. want to work at Chick-fil-A.

  38. Because that's core to who we are.

  39. It's part of our Core Four.

  40. The Sermon on the Mount has a similar function.

  41. It's Jesus' kingdom manifesto where he says, this is what it looks like to be a citizen of

  42. my kingdom.

  43. This is what it looks like if you're going to call yourself a follower of mine.

  44. And if anyone says, well, you know, these things, I hear them, I kind of see what you're saying,

  45. but I'm not really interested in that.

  46. That's not really who I am.

  47. That's not who I want to be.

  48. And the truth is, then you don't really want to be a follower of Jesus.

  49. Because Jesus has told us what it means to be a citizen of his kingdom.

  50. And so as Jesus preaches this Sermon on the Mount in general, and the Beatitudes in particular,

  51. he's telling us what it looks like.

  52. And he has some hard words for us about what it means to be his followers.

  53. But he shares these hard words with us because he loves us and he wants us to be in his kingdom.

  54. So that's the first thing I want to say about the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes.

  55. Second thing is, do you remember why Mike said we're looking at the Beatitudes at this time?

  56. It's explicitly because we are in a contentious and divisive and extremely close election season.

  57. And Mike said that he wants to love us well by reminding us of the Beatitudes, of who Jesus calls us to be.

  58. And there are a lot of pastors in this country who right now, either on Sunday mornings or on social media or wherever,

  59. to their churches are standing up and they're waving a Trump flag in front of their people.

  60. Or they're waving a Harris flag in front of their people.

  61. And saying, this is what it means to follow Jesus in this season.

  62. And Mike has made the choice that he's going to stand up here at this time, week after week,

  63. and he's going to wave a King Jesus flag in front of us.

  64. And there are some people who think that's the wrong choice.

  65. But woe to us, we're going to hear some woes in this sermon, woe to us here at Christ the King Church,

  66. if we see the King Jesus flag in front of us every week, and we choose to pick up a different one.

  67. The Apostle John said,

  68. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  69. And the currents are strong right now, almost unavoidable,

  70. pulling us to idolize political partisanship and personality and power,

  71. and to make us in the image of those idols.

  72. So let's give thanks for Pastor Mike directing us to Jesus' kingdom manifesto at this time.

  73. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  74. The question for pretty much all of these beatitudes, as Jesus proclaims them,

  75. is, is that me?

  76. Am I blessed?

  77. Do I fit that profile?

  78. So the question for us this morning is,

  79. do I hunger and thirst for righteousness?

  80. And so to figure that out, we're going to have to answer three questions.

  81. First, what is righteousness?

  82. Second, what does it mean to hunger and thirst for it?

  83. And third, what is the satisfaction that is promised?

  84. So first of all, what is righteousness?

  85. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  86. The definition, all give this morning, there are a variety of ways you can think about it.

  87. That I should all give this morning is,

  88. righteousness is conformity to God's law.

  89. Or righteousness is God's will in your heart and in your life.

  90. Why do I say that?

  91. Why do I say that righteousness is conformity to God's law?

  92. Look at Matthew 17 through 20.

  93. Sorry, Matthew 5, 17 through 20, here in the Sermon on the Mount.

  94. Jesus says,

  95. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  96. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  97. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,

  98. not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

  99. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments

  100. and teaches others to the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

  101. But whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  102. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  103. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  104. So Jesus is drawing a clear connection here.

  105. He's saying the law is crucial.

  106. It's important.

  107. The law must be fulfilled.

  108. I will fulfill it.

  109. And you better not devalue it.

  110. You need to understand it.

  111. You need to teach it.

  112. And he says,

  113. Unless your righteousness in this regard exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  114. you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  115. And what he means is,

  116. Unless your righteousness,

  117. unless your conformity to God's law exceeds the Pharisees,

  118. you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

  119. And what he means by that,

  120. as you see in the rest of the Sermon on the Mount,

  121. is that not only do you have to follow the law outwardly,

  122. the law has to shape who you are inwardly.

  123. You have to follow the law in every,

  124. in the deepest part of who you are.

  125. That's how your righteousness has to exceed that of the scribes and the Pharisees,

  126. by conforming to God's law in every way.

  127. Look at Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7:21–23

  128. verses 21 through 23.

  129. Jesus says,

  130. this is still in the Sermon on the Mount, by the way,

  131. not everyone who says to me,

  132. Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  133. but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  134. On that day, many will say to me,

  135. Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name,

  136. and cast out demons in your name,

  137. and do many mighty works in your name?

  138. And then I will declare to them,

  139. I never knew you.

  140. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  141. As Jesus is saying,

  142. it's not about your profession only,

  143. or the amount of good works that you do,

  144. or the amount of ministry that you do.

  145. It's whether or not you follow the law,

  146. or whether you're a worker of lawlessness.

  147. That's what defines those who are part of Jesus' kingdom.

  148. And flip way over in Matthew to chapter 23.

  149. In Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  150. Jesus is giving some anti-beatitudes,

  151. woes.

  152. A woe is like a cross between a warning and a curse.

  153. And he's giving these woes to the scribes and the Pharisees

  154. for the ways they have failed to be

  155. the spiritual leaders and teachers of God's people.

  156. In verses 27 through 28,

  157. he says,

  158. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites,

  159. for you are like whitewashed tombs,

  160. which outwardly appear beautiful,

  161. but within are full of dead people's bones

  162. and all uncleanness.

  163. So outwardly,

  164. you appear righteous to others.

  165. You appear righteous.

  166. But within,

  167. you are full of hypocrisy and what?

  168. Lawlessness.

  169. So the opposite of righteousness

  170. is lawlessness.

  171. So righteousness is a conformity to God's law.

  172. It's God's will in your heart

  173. and in your life.

  174. And righteousness has a few features to it.

  175. It's exacting and it's comprehensive,

  176. but it's also beautiful and refreshing.

  177. I say it's exacting and comprehensive.

  178. It touches every part of life

  179. and it touches every part of who we are.

  180. Going back to Matthew 5

  181. in the Sermon on the Mount again,

  182. verses 21 through 48.

  183. One way of thinking about the Sermon on the Mount

  184. is it's Jesus' sermon on what righteousness means.

  185. And in verses 21 through 48,

  186. right after he's saying,

  187. your righteousness has to exceed that of the scribes

  188. and the Pharisees,

  189. he's going on to explain exactly what that looks like.

  190. And we see how exacting and comprehensive

  191. righteousness really is.

  192. So we're going to read all of this,

  193. verse 21 through 48.

  194. Verse 21 through 48.

  195. You have heard that it was said to those of old,

  196. you shall not murder.

  197. And whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

  198. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother

  199. will be liable to judgment.

  200. Whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council.

  201. And whoever says you fool will be liable to the hell of fire.

  202. So if you're offering your gift at the altar

  203. and there remember that your brother has something against you,

  204. leave your gift there before the altar and go.

  205. First be reconciled to your brother

  206. and then come and offer your gift.

  207. Come to terms quickly with your accuser

  208. while you're going with him to court.

  209. Lest your accuser hand you over to the judge

  210. and the judge to the guard,

  211. you may put in prison.

  212. Truly I say to you,

  213. you will never get out

  214. until you have paid the last penny.

  215. So what you're saying?

  216. You haven't murdered anyone?

  217. So you think you're all right before the law?

  218. No, the law is deeper than that.

  219. You have heard that it was said

  220. you should not commit adultery.

  221. But I say that everyone who looks at a woman

  222. with lustful intent

  223. has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  224. If your right eye causes you to sin,

  225. tear it out and throw it away.

  226. For it is better that you lose one of your members

  227. than your whole body be thrown into hell.

  228. And if your right hand causes you to sin,

  229. cut it off and throw it away.

  230. For it is better that you lose one of your members

  231. than that your whole body go into hell.

  232. So if you manage to avoid adultery,

  233. that doesn't mean you've kept the law.

  234. Where's your heart?

  235. Verse 31,

  236. You think divorce is easy,

  237. no fault,

  238. any reason,

  239. no consequences?

  240. Not according to Jesus' law.

  241. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old,

  242. you shall not swear falsely,

  243. but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  244. But I say to you,

  245. do not take an oath at all,

  246. either by heaven,

  247. for it is the throne of God,

  248. or by the earth,

  249. for it is footstool,

  250. or by Jerusalem,

  251. for it is the city of the great king.

  252. And do not take an oath by your head,

  253. for you cannot make one hair white or black.

  254. Let what you say be simply yes or no.

  255. Complete truthfulness and trustworthiness.

  256. Anything more than this comes from evil.

  257. You have heard that it was said,

  258. an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

  259. But I say to you,

  260. do not resist one who is evil.

  261. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek,

  262. turn to him the other also.

  263. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,

  264. let him have your cloak as well.

  265. And if anyone forces you to go one mile,

  266. go with him two miles.

  267. Give to the one who begs from you,

  268. and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

  269. You have heard that it was said,

  270. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  271. But I say to you,

  272. love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

  273. so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.

  274. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good,

  275. and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

  276. For if you love those who love you,

  277. what reward do you have?

  278. Do not even the tax collectors do the same.

  279. And if you greet only your brothers,

  280. what more are you doing than others?

  281. Do not even the Gentiles do the same.

  282. You therefore must be perfect,

  283. as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  284. So over and over again,

  285. Jesus is either taking quotations from the law,

  286. or taking quotations from tradition based on the law,

  287. and he's saying,

  288. this is what you think righteousness is.

  289. It's not good enough.

  290. It's not comprehensive enough.

  291. It's not deep enough in who you are.

  292. The law is more than that.

  293. Righteousness is more than that.

  294. So righteousness is exacting and comprehensive.

  295. It goes farther than we ever thought,

  296. and it goes deeper into who we are than we ever thought.

  297. But righteousness is also beautiful and refreshing,

  298. because we don't want to make the mistake of the scribes and Pharisees,

  299. of leading our understanding of righteousness

  300. to make us judgmental, miserable, oppressive people.

  301. Chapter 7, verse 12.

  302. Here in the Sermon on the Mount,

  303. Jesus gives us a rule of thumb about what it means to follow the law.

  304. This is very familiar to us.

  305. Whatever you wish that others would do to you,

  306. do also to them,

  307. for this is the law and the prophets.

  308. You want to understand kind of a good litmus test to say,

  309. am I following the law or not?

  310. Am I being righteous in this moment or not?

  311. Would I want someone else to do this to me?

  312. If not, don't do it.

  313. If yes, do that.

  314. So the law is something that orients us towards doing good to others,

  315. because it's a beautiful and refreshing law.

  316. Really similar rule of thumb we see in Matthew 22, verses 36 through 40.

    Matthew 22:36–40

  317. Someone asked Jesus,

  318. Teacher, what is the great commandment in the law?

  319. And he said to him,

  320. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart

  321. and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  322. This is the great and first commandment.

  323. And the second is like it.

  324. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  325. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  326. So the law is beautiful and refreshing

  327. because the law, properly understood,

  328. always orients us towards love of God and love of others.

  329. And if we ever think that we are righteous

  330. and yet our heart is not being led towards love for God

  331. and love for others, we are not being righteous.

  332. So while the law is exacting comprehensive

  333. and while righteousness is exacting comprehensive,

  334. righteousness is also beautiful and refreshing.

  335. Jesus was the perfectly righteous one

  336. and sinners loved to be with him.

  337. Sinners who knew their need loved to be near to Jesus

  338. because his righteousness was refreshing to them.

  339. So when you think about righteousness,

  340. don't think conformity to God's law.

  341. Oh man, who wants conformity?

  342. That's a negative word in our time.

  343. Law.

  344. Who wants law?

  345. Why would I want conformity to a law?

  346. Don't think conformity to God's law as a straitjacket.

  347. Think of it as setting a broken bone.

  348. Restoring something to the way it was meant to be.

  349. No one says, oh, you think femurs should be in one piece instead of two?

  350. That's so old-fashioned.

  351. It's really kind of oppressive that you would feel like that's how everyone should be.

  352. Or like, man, you don't understand the unique beauty of a compound fracture?

  353. No.

  354. No.

  355. Righteousness is a restoring to health.

  356. It's a restoring to the way things were meant to be.

  357. It's conforming to real health.

  358. I live near the Chewauke Prairie Preserve.

  359. I don't know if you guys have been over there.

  360. It's by the lake.

  361. Really beautiful place.

  362. And every year, when we're out walking, we see volunteers out there pulling up weeds for hours.

  363. Just, you know, in the prairie, up to their shoulders, pulling out invasive species.

  364. Why do they do that?

  365. Because they're trying to conform the prairie to its true state.

  366. To its natural state.

  367. To a state of real health.

  368. They're not saying, hey, we're just going to let anything happen in this prairie.

  369. Anything can grow up.

  370. Whatever seeds fall can grow.

  371. Whatever happens organically is going to be fine.

  372. They know that some conformity is required in order for true health in the prairie.

  373. And the result of conformity is beauty and life and flourishing.

  374. And it's the same for us.

  375. True righteousness is beautiful and refreshing.

  376. Righteousness is conformity to God's law.

  377. It's God's will in your heart and in your life.

  378. That's the first question.

  379. What is righteousness?

  380. Second question.

  381. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for it?

  382. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  383. For they shall be satisfied.

  384. Most of you have probably heard of this psychological concept called Maslow's hierarchy.

  385. It's often pictured as a pyramid.

  386. It's a hierarchy of needs that this guy came up with.

  387. And in his view, there were different levels of need.

  388. In order to be able to meet one level of need, you had to make sure the levels of need below were met first.

  389. So at the bottom, the base level of this hierarchy is physiological needs.

  390. Food, water, shelter.

  391. The kind of things you need just to keep your body alive for a little while.

  392. The next level of need after that is safety.

  393. Safety from outside attacks.

  394. Safety from sickness.

  395. Safety from financial ruin.

  396. The next level of need after that is love and belonging needs.

  397. So how are my relationships?

  398. Family, friends.

  399. The next level of need after that is esteem needs.

  400. So am I accomplishing good things in the world and receive the recognition for it?

  401. And then the top of the hierarchy of needs, as he thought of it, was what he called self-actualization.

  402. When someone has all of these needs below being met and they are free to fully live out all that they have the potential to be.

  403. Now I'm not saying that this hierarchy of needs is necessarily accurate or, you know, the best way of thinking about human psychology.

  404. We're probably a little more complicated than that.

  405. But it is going to help us understand what Jesus means when he says,

  406. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  407. That pair of words, hunger and thirst, in the New Testament, denote need and desperation.

  408. When you put hunger and thirst together, what the image that is brought up in your mind, if you read through the Gospels,

  409. is someone who's poor, someone who can't provide for themselves, someone who's desperate, someone who needs help.

  410. So hunger and thirst denote need and desperation.

  411. And when he uses these physical metaphors of hunger and thirst, here's what Jesus is saying.

  412. He's saying, Blessed are those who move righteousness to the bottom of their hierarchy of needs.

  413. Because what we're tempted to do is to say, You know what?

  414. I do want to be righteous.

  415. I know that's what I should be.

  416. But I need to get some other things in order first, okay?

  417. Obviously, I need to make sure that my physical needs are provided for.

  418. I need to have job security.

  419. I need to have financial security.

  420. I need to get my family under control.

  421. I need to have my friendships in order.

  422. I would really like to be, you know, working in a job that really fulfills me.

  423. And kind of like, okay, like that's when I'm going to have the time and the space to think about righteousness.

  424. Righteousness.

  425. So we naturally tend to put righteousness at the top of the hierarchy, coming last.

  426. And Jesus says it needs to sink all the way to the bottom.

  427. That it's the most basic need that you have in your life.

  428. I need righteousness before I need anything else.

  429. And Jesus is not saying put it down along with food and water.

  430. He's saying put it below food and drink.

  431. Are you sure about that?

  432. Yes.

  433. Let's look at Matthew chapter 6, verse 33.

    Matthew 6:33

  434. Still in the Sermon on the Mount.

  435. Jesus is encouraging his kingdom citizens to not be anxious about food and drink and clothing.

  436. In verse 31 he says,

  437. Therefore do not be anxious, saying, what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear?

  438. For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

  439. But seek first before those things.

  440. The kingdom of God and his righteousness.

  441. And all these things will be added to you.

  442. Do you see that?

  443. Jesus is saying, citizens of my kingdom need to move the need for righteousness to the very bottom.

  444. The very foundation that I need righteousness more than I need anything else.

  445. I need to be conformed to God's law more than I need to eat.

  446. I need God's will in my heart and in my life more than I need to drink.

  447. I need to be righteous more than I need a stable bank account.

  448. It comes first.

  449. And just like hunger and thirst, what Jesus is getting at is that we feel the lack of it.

  450. As we go through our lives, when we recognize an area of unrighteousness,

  451. when we realize that righteousness is lacking, we feel that.

  452. When we're hungry, what do we do?

  453. We go on the hunt for food.

  454. We open the fridge.

  455. We look at the shelf.

  456. We go to the store.

  457. We go to Chick-fil-A.

  458. When we're hungry, we go on the hunt.

  459. And we feel our lack of righteousness.

  460. We feel it.

  461. We say, I need to address this.

  462. I need to get righteousness in this part of my life.

  463. And I'm not going to rest or be satisfied until I do.

  464. I do.

  465. I need to get to know.

  466. We hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  467. We make conformity to God's law essential to our life.

  468. So if you're like me, right now you're thinking,

  469. that's not a very accurate description of me.

  470. I probably cannot honestly say that right now, in general, that's the way righteousness sits in my heart.

  471. Well, that's why Jesus gave us the beatitudes to call us into his kingdom.

  472. So how do we take steps towards fitting this profile?

  473. How do we develop a hunger and a thirst for righteousness in ourselves?

  474. A few quick thoughts.

  475. The first thing we need is a new heart.

  476. You will never hunger and thirst for righteousness without a new heart given through faith in Jesus.

  477. That is one of the chief promises of the new covenant that Jesus brought,

  478. is that we would have a new heart.

  479. Jeremiah 31, 33, looking forward to this new covenant that we have in Jesus, says,

  480. For this is the covenant, this is God talking,

  481. that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord.

  482. I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts,

  483. and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

  484. A hunger for righteousness can only exist in a new heart given through faith in Jesus.

  485. So if your faith is not in Jesus,

  486. that's your first step.

  487. You need to realize,

  488. I need salvation.

  489. I am unrighteous,

  490. and I need the perfectly righteous one to save me and give me a new heart.

  491. Only a new heart can hunger and thirst for righteousness.

  492. Second way we can cultivate a hunger and thirst for righteousness is by studying God's law.

  493. The Old Testament and the New Testament,

  494. looking at them,

  495. you can't hunger for what you don't know.

  496. You can't recognize a lack of righteousness

  497. if you don't know what righteousness actually looks like.

  498. So we have to spend time in God's word,

  499. hearing God's will expressed to us,

  500. understanding his law,

  501. understanding his character,

  502. understanding what he's calling his people to,

  503. so that then we have the framework to say,

  504. okay, this is what righteousness looks like,

  505. and this is what unrighteousness looks like,

  506. because sometimes we can be deceived,

  507. even with a new heart.

  508. So if we are not studying God's law,

  509. we can't expect that we can hunger to conform to it.

  510. Number three, we need space for reflection.

  511. We need time to reflect on God's law

  512. and time to reflect on our own hearts and lives.

  513. And I don't know that we're busier now than people have ever been,

  514. but I do know 100% that it's a lot more possible

  515. to fill every little crack of time and attention

  516. than it ever has been before.

  517. And you can go from the moment you wake up

  518. when you grab your phone off your nightstand

  519. to the moment you go to bed

  520. when you put it back on your nightstand

  521. and literally not have a single moment of quiet reflection.

  522. Because if you are not working

  523. or talking to friends or family,

  524. you are looking at your phone

  525. or you are listening to music or a podcast

  526. or you are watching a show or something like that,

  527. and in 24 hours you might not have a single moment

  528. of meditation or reflection.

  529. Do you remember the beatitude from Psalm 1?

  530. Blessed is the man

  531. who does what?

  532. Walks not in the way of sinners

  533. nor walks not in the way of...

  534. I probably should make sure I get this right.

  535. Walks not in the way of...

  536. In the counsel of the wicked

  537. nor stands in the way of sinners

  538. nor sits in the seat of scoffers,

  539. but what?

  540. His delight is in the law of the Lord,

  541. and on his law he meditates day and night.

  542. Blessed is that man

  543. who meditates on God's law day and night.

  544. The Psalm 1 beatitude.

  545. So we need space for reflection.

  546. And then lastly,

  547. we just need to do it.

  548. Right?

  549. When we see what righteousness looks like,

  550. when we see what God's law calls us to,

  551. we just need to act on it.

  552. Look at Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7:24–27

  553. verses 24 through 27.

  554. This is the very end

  555. of the Sermon on the Mount.

  556. After everything that Jesus has said

  557. in this sermon,

  558. this is how he finishes it off.

  559. Everyone then who hears these words of mine

  560. and does them

  561. will be like a wise man

  562. who built his house on the rock.

  563. And the rain fell,

  564. and the floods came,

  565. and the winds blew,

  566. and beat on that house,

  567. but it did not fall

  568. because it had been founded on the rock.

  569. And everyone who hears these words of mine

  570. and does not do them

  571. will be like a foolish man

  572. who built his house on the sand.

  573. And the rain fell,

  574. and the floods came,

  575. and the winds blew,

  576. and beat against that house,

  577. and it fell,

  578. and great was the fall of it.

  579. Sometimes we just have to obey.

  580. And in the obedience,

  581. we will find our joy

  582. in righteousness increases.

  583. So what is righteousness?

  584. It's conformity to God's law.

  585. It's God's will in your heart

  586. and in your life.

  587. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for it?

  588. It means that conformity to God's will

  589. is essential to your life.

  590. It's the need that comes before

  591. all other needs.

  592. Last question,

  593. what is the satisfaction

  594. that is promised?

  595. Blessed are those who hunger

  596. and thirst for righteousness,

  597. for they shall be satisfied.

  598. So the danger for this beatitude,

  599. and really for all the beatitudes,

  600. is that we hear them,

  601. and we wonder if it's worth it.

  602. What's the point

  603. of fitting this profile

  604. to be poor in spirit,

  605. to mourn,

  606. to meek,

  607. to hunger and thirst

  608. for righteousness,

  609. to be merciful,

  610. to be pure in heart,

  611. to be peacemakers,

  612. to be persecuted?

  613. None of those things

  614. are valued

  615. by the world around us.

  616. Not one of them.

  617. None of those things

  618. are encouraged

  619. by the world around us.

  620. So what's the point

  621. of conforming ourselves

  622. to that kind of profile?

  623. What's the payoff?

  624. Especially when we take into account

  625. that like,

  626. okay, well,

  627. even when I do hunger

  628. and thirst for righteousness,

  629. I can't seem to accomplish it fully.

  630. So am I just struggling

  631. and hungering

  632. and thirsting

  633. and striving

  634. and missing out

  635. on a lot of things

  636. for nothing?

  637. And what about

  638. everyone else

  639. who is not righteous

  640. at all?

  641. What about those

  642. who oppress others

  643. and lie

  644. and cheat

  645. and hurt

  646. and kill?

  647. What about them

  648. because oftentimes

  649. their unrighteousness

  650. seems to be working out

  651. just fine for them?

  652. I hope it's not

  653. too offensive

  654. to point out

  655. that our two major

  656. candidates

  657. for president

  658. have lives

  659. and policies

  660. that are deeply

  661. marked by unrighteousness.

  662. What's the point?

  663. Jesus promises,

  664. blessed are those

  665. who hunger

  666. and thirst

  667. for righteousness

  668. for they shall be

  669. satisfied.

  670. satisfied.

  671. Jesus promises

  672. that you

  673. will

  674. be satisfied,

  675. that you will

  676. see the point,

  677. that you will

  678. have a payoff

  679. if your life

  680. is characterized

  681. by righteousness.

  682. And there are

  683. three ways

  684. that we can think

  685. about our hunger

  686. and thirst

  687. for righteousness

  688. being satisfied.

  689. The first one

  690. is the righteousness

  691. being accomplished

  692. by Jesus.

  693. Remember

  694. Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5:17

  695. verse 17,

  696. do not think

  697. that I have come

  698. to abolish

  699. the law

  700. of the prophets.

  701. I have not

  702. come to abolish

  703. them but to

  704. fulfill them.

  705. Jesus says,

  706. I got this.

  707. My mission

  708. is to fulfill

  709. God's law

  710. perfectly

  711. and he did it.

  712. Righteousness,

  713. full righteousness,

  714. as comprehensive

  715. and exacting

  716. and as deep

  717. as it is

  718. was accomplished

  719. by Jesus.

  720. So when we

  721. are wondering

  722. if our desire

  723. for righteousness

  724. will ever be fulfilled,

  725. we can have peace

  726. knowing that Jesus

  727. has already

  728. accomplished

  729. that righteousness.

  730. Look at Matthew

    Matthew 11:28–30

  731. chapter 11

  732. verses 28

  733. through 30.

  734. Jesus says,

  735. Come to me

  736. all who labor

  737. and are heavy laden

  738. and I will give you

  739. rest.

  740. Take my yoke

  741. upon you

  742. and learn from me

  743. for I am gentle

  744. and lowly in heart

  745. and you will find

  746. rest for your souls

  747. for my yoke

  748. is easy

  749. and my burden

  750. is light.

  751. It's like,

  752. well Jesus,

  753. you already preached

  754. the sermon

  755. on the mount.

  756. How can you call

  757. that easy

  758. and light?

  759. Jesus' burden

  760. is light

  761. because he

  762. carried it

  763. for us

  764. and we're

  765. joining with him

  766. in that.

  767. So full righteousness

  768. has been accomplished

  769. by Jesus

  770. so we have peace.

  771. So even when we

  772. hunger and thirst

  773. and we fall short,

  774. we have peace

  775. with God

  776. because of what

  777. Jesus has done.

  778. So our hunger

  779. and thirst for righteousness

  780. is satisfied

  781. in that way.

  782. Secondly,

  783. our hunger

  784. and thirst for righteousness

  785. can be satisfied

  786. because righteousness

  787. is now possible

  788. in us.

  789. Remember Jeremiah

  790. 31, 33,

  791. we have a new heart.

  792. God's law

  793. is written on our hearts

  794. and where previously

  795. we had no power,

  796. no ability

  797. to be righteous

  798. in any way,

  799. we have a new heart

  800. and we have

  801. the life of Jesus

  802. in us

  803. enabling us

  804. to grow in righteousness

  805. more and more.

  806. So our hunger

  807. and thirst for righteousness

  808. will be satisfied

  809. because as we hunger

  810. and thirst for it,

  811. we will see our righteousness

  812. grow and increase.

  813. It's not futile.

  814. We have the power

  815. to increase

  816. in our conformity

  817. to God's law,

  818. to see God's will

  819. in our heart

  820. and our lives

  821. more and more and more.

  822. And then lastly

  823. and perhaps

  824. most importantly

  825. here in the Beatitudes,

  826. our hunger

  827. and thirst

  828. for righteousness

  829. will be satisfied

  830. fully

  831. and finally

  832. in Jesus'

  833. final kingdom.

  834. Righteousness

  835. will be perfected

  836. in Jesus'

  837. final kingdom.

  838. Righteousness

  839. in us

  840. and righteousness

  841. in the world

  842. around us

  843. and so we

  844. hope for that

  845. knowing that

  846. full satisfaction

  847. is coming.

  848. Now one thing

  849. that I wish

  850. we had more time

  851. to talk about

  852. is that righteousness

  853. is not just

  854. personal.

  855. It's not just

  856. in your own heart

  857. and in your own life.

  858. Righteousness

  859. is also something

  860. that God wants

  861. to characterize

  862. families

  863. and communities

  864. and towns

  865. and nations

  866. and businesses.

  867. And we should

  868. hunger and thirst

  869. for righteousness

  870. to be accomplished

  871. in all of those

  872. areas as well.

  873. And if we

  874. understand

  875. what righteousness

  876. really is

  877. and we look around

  878. at the world

  879. around us

  880. all of the

  881. systems and

  882. organizations

  883. and groups

  884. we're going to

  885. find a lot

  886. of unrighteousness.

  887. And if we are

  888. kingdom citizens

  889. we can let go

  890. of the need

  891. to be apologists

  892. for the

  893. Republican Party

  894. or apologists

  895. for the

  896. Democratic Party

  897. or for

  898. any other

  899. system or

  900. group

  901. and we don't

  902. have to be

  903. people who say

  904. hey no

  905. we're all good

  906. here the problem

  907. is with the

  908. other guys.

  909. If we're true

  910. kingdom citizens

  911. who are hungering

  912. and thirsting

  913. for righteousness

  914. we can look

  915. at any group

  916. including group

  917. that we might

  918. call our own

  919. and say

  920. there's unrighteousness

  921. here and I'm

  922. not okay with

  923. it and I'm

  924. not going to

  925. cover it over

  926. because of the

  927. unrighteousness in

  928. some other group.

  929. And one of the

  930. promises of

  931. Jesus' kingdom

  932. is that righteousness

  933. will not just be

  934. personal it'll be

  935. societal

  936. in his full and

  937. final kingdom.

  938. And Jesus

  939. talks about that

  940. in Matthew

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  941. chapter 13.

  942. So this is your

  943. last page turn.

  944. Turn to Matthew

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  945. chapter 13.

  946. Jesus tells a

  947. parable

  948. talking about

  949. what

  950. his kingdom

  951. is like

  952. his coming

  953. kingdom.

  954. First

  955. in verses 24

  956. through 30

  957. he tells

  958. the parable.

  959. He put another

  960. parable before them

  961. saying,

  962. the kingdom

  963. of heaven

  964. may be compared

  965. to a man

  966. who sowed

  967. good seed

  968. in his field.

  969. But while his

  970. men were sleeping

  971. his enemy came

  972. and sowed weeds

  973. among the wheat

  974. and went away.

  975. So when the

  976. plants came up

  977. and bore grain

  978. then the weeds

  979. appeared also.

  980. And the servants

  981. of the master

  982. of the house

  983. came and said

  984. to him,

  985. Master did you

  986. not sow

  987. good seed

  988. in your field?

  989. How then

  990. does it have

  991. weeds?

  992. He said to them

  993. an enemy has

  994. done this.

  995. So the servants

  996. said to him

  997. then do you

  998. want us to go

  999. and gather them?

  1000. But he said

  1001. no,

  1002. less than gathering

  1003. the weeds

  1004. you root up

  1005. the wheat

  1006. along with them.

  1007. Let both

  1008. grow together

  1009. until the harvest.

  1010. And at harvest

  1011. time I will

  1012. tell the wheat

  1013. reapers

  1014. gather the weeds

  1015. first and buy

  1016. them in bundles

  1017. to be burned

  1018. but gather the

  1019. wheat into

  1020. my barn.

  1021. So that's

  1022. Jesus' parable

  1023. about his

  1024. coming kingdom.

  1025. And in verses

  1026. 36 through 43

  1027. he explains it.

  1028. Then he left

  1029. the crowds

  1030. and went

  1031. into the house

  1032. and his

  1033. disciples

  1034. came to him

  1035. saying,

  1036. Explain to us

  1037. the parable

  1038. of the weeds

  1039. of the field.

  1040. And he

  1041. answered,

  1042. The one who

  1043. sows the good

  1044. seed is the

  1045. son of man.

  1046. The field

  1047. is the world

  1048. and the good

  1049. seed is the

  1050. sons of the

  1051. kingdom,

  1052. kingdom citizens.

  1053. The weeds

  1054. are the sons

  1055. of the evil

  1056. one.

  1057. And the enemy

  1058. who sowed

  1059. them is the

  1060. devil.

  1061. The harvest

  1062. is the

  1063. close of

  1064. the age

  1065. and the

  1066. reapers

  1067. are angels.

  1068. Just as

  1069. the weeds

  1070. are gathered

  1071. and burned

  1072. with fire

  1073. so will

  1074. it be

  1075. at the

  1076. close of

  1077. the age.

  1078. The son

  1079. of man

  1080. will send

  1081. his angels

  1082. and they

  1083. will gather

  1084. out of

  1085. his kingdom

  1086. all causes

  1087. of sin

  1088. and all

  1089. lawbreakers

  1090. and throw

  1091. them into

  1092. the fiery

  1093. furnace.

  1094. In that

  1095. place there

  1096. will be

  1097. weeping

  1098. and gnashing

  1099. of teeth.

  1100. Then the

  1101. righteous

  1102. will shine

  1103. like the

  1104. son in

  1105. the kingdom

  1106. of their

  1107. father.

  1108. He who

  1109. has ears

  1110. let him

  1111. hear.

  1112. You see

  1113. what Jesus

  1114. is promising

  1115. there?

  1116. He's saying

  1117. the same

  1118. thing that

  1119. he said

  1120. in Matthew

  1121. 5, 6

  1122. blessed are

  1123. those who

  1124. hunger and

  1125. thirst for

  1126. righteousness

  1127. for they

  1128. shall be

  1129. satisfied.

  1130. He's saying

  1131. there's a

  1132. payoff coming.

  1133. There's a

  1134. moment coming

  1135. when full

  1136. righteousness

  1137. is going to

  1138. be accomplished

  1139. and those

  1140. who are

  1141. right,

  1142. first of

  1143. all

  1144. cause of

  1145. sin and

  1146. law breaking

  1147. will be

  1148. taken out

  1149. of the

  1150. kingdom

  1151. so there

  1152. is no

  1153. more

  1154. oppression

  1155. and pain

  1156. and then

  1157. the

  1158. righteous

  1159. those who

  1160. have spent

  1161. their lives

  1162. hungering and

  1163. thirsting for

  1164. righteousness

  1165. then the

  1166. righteous will

  1167. shine like

  1168. the sun in

  1169. the kingdom

  1170. of their

  1171. father

  1172. for they

  1173. shall be

  1174. satisfied.

  1175. Let's

  1176. pray.

  1177. father we

  1178. feel our

  1179. lack of

  1180. righteousness

  1181. and we

  1182. ask that you

  1183. would help

  1184. us to feel

  1185. it more.

  1186. Help us to

  1187. hunger and

  1188. thirst for

  1189. righteousness

  1190. and may we

  1191. be kingdom

  1192. citizens who

  1193. display the

  1194. beauty and

  1195. refreshing nature

  1196. what righteousness

  1197. is to the

  1198. world around

  1199. us.

  1200. We can

  1201. only come to

  1202. you and

  1203. pray these

  1204. things and

  1205. ask these

  1206. things because

  1207. Jesus is our

  1208. king and he

  1209. died for us

  1210. and he rose

  1211. for us and

  1212. he is going to

  1213. return to

  1214. establish his

  1215. full kingdom.

  1216. Amen.

  1217. Amen.

  1218. Amen.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.

  1237. Amen.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. Amen.

  1240. Amen.

  1241. Amen.

  1242. Amen.

  1243. Amen.

  1244. Amen.
