  1. Amen. You may be seated, kids. You are dismissed to your King's Kids classes.

  2. And if I would invite you to open up to your Bibles to Matthew, chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  3. We've been making our way through the Beatitudes, the very beginning of Jesus' Kingdom Manifesto.

  4. So, I'm going to read Matthew 5, 1 through 10.

  5. Seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him.

  6. And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying,

  7. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  8. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  9. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  10. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  11. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  12. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  13. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  14. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,

  15. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  16. And may God bless the hearing of His word.

  17. One of the things that I've been trying to draw to your attention as we've been making our way through the Beatitudes

  18. is the purposeful sequence to the Beatitudes.

  19. It's not just thrown together.

  20. It's purposeful.

  21. And this fifth Beatitude that we're in, blessed are the merciful, represents a development in that sequence.

  22. And so, the first Beatitude, blessed are the poor in spirit,

  23. we're being told we need to declare spiritual bankruptcy before God.

  24. Blessed are those who mourn.

  25. Not only are we to declare spiritual bankruptcy,

  26. but we are to have this godly grief over our sin against God.

  27. Blessed are the meek.

  28. When we see ourselves as God sees us, it is humbling.

  29. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.

  30. Caleb, thank you so much for preaching last week on this.

  31. This exceeding righteousness.

  32. This inward righteousness.

  33. This beautiful and refreshing righteousness.

  34. Not only for our own souls, but beginning for the souls around us.

  35. And now we come to the fifth Beatitude.

  36. Blessed are the merciful.

  37. And what Jesus is getting at is our posture of heart towards those in need around us.

  38. So let me ask you a question.

  39. What is your typical response when you encounter a person in need?

  40. Maybe it's a material need for money, for transportation, food, clothing.

  41. Or maybe it's an emotional need.

  42. Someone is emotional, in emotional distress.

  43. Maybe it's a relational need.

  44. You encounter someone who is in a strained relationship with someone else.

  45. What's your response?

  46. Spiritual needs.

  47. Is your typical response one of a tenderness of heart?

  48. Or hardness of heart?

  49. One that says, oh man.

  50. I know I've been there.

  51. Or more pharisaical.

  52. Mmm.

  53. Sorry, buddy.

  54. John Stott, in his commentary on the Sermon on the Mount.

  55. He defines mercy as compassion for people in need.

  56. But if you're a fan of Boston, the band,

  57. you know that compassion is more than a feeling.

  58. No.

  59. It's compassion in action towards people in need.

  60. Mercy isn't just feeling bad for people in need.

  61. It's doing something about it.

  62. It's moving towards them.

  63. So mercy is compassion in action for people in need.

  64. And it requires a tenderness of heart.

  65. It doesn't mean you look past people's sin or hardships

  66. or what people have contributed to their own difficulty.

  67. But it does mean tenderly trying to help them in their need.

  68. Do you know what gets in the way

  69. of us extending mercy to people in our lives that are in need?

  70. Not the people in need.

  71. It's us.

  72. We've got a problem in our hearts.

  73. If you regularly experience impatience with people in need,

  74. frustration with people in need,

  75. avoidance of people in need,

  76. maybe you are disgusted by people in need.

  77. Maybe there's an unwillingness in you to be inconvenienced

  78. to help people in need.

  79. Do you know what you need to hear?

  80. Blessed are the merciful,

  81. for they shall receive mercy.

  82. I'm going to make a case this morning

  83. that's aimed at your heart.

  84. I'm not going to go into,

  85. here are some practical steps

  86. of how to help people in need without hurting them.

  87. There's this very helpful kind of book.

  88. It's called Helping Without Hurting.

  89. It's how we mercifully and wisely meet people in their needs.

  90. I'm not going after that this morning.

  91. What Jesus' words is giving us an opportunity

  92. is to tend to our hearts.

  93. So here's what I'm going to argue.

  94. I want to convince you of it.

  95. The tender mercy of God tenderizes our hearts

  96. towards those in need.

  97. You need the mercy of God to be merciful to others.

  98. I'm going to make this in four points.

  99. First is this.

  100. We're going to look at mercy personified,

  101. mercy incarnate.

  102. Then we're going to look at his mercy people,

  103. mercy's pathway,

  104. and then the mercy that's promised.

  105. So let's dig in.

  106. Mercy personified.

  107. Steve opened to the service this morning

  108. in Exodus 34, 6 and 7.

  109. God reveals himself to Moses,

  110. the Lord, the Lord, merciful and gracious.

  111. The first thing God says about himself to Moses

  112. is, hey, I'm merciful.

  113. Now he's just and holy and righteous.

  114. I mean, we're going to see in a little bit

  115. he's the judge,

  116. but he's full of mercy,

  117. merciful and gracious.

  118. It might make you wonder,

  119. what's the difference between mercy and grace?

  120. Both God's mercy and God's grace

  121. are ways God expresses his love for people in need.

  122. But as I was reading this week

  123. and preparing for the sermon,

  124. I came across this distinction

  125. that I thought was helpful.

  126. I think it will help you.

  127. It's not necessarily airtight,

  128. but you'll get the point.

  129. God's grace is God's loving pardon

  130. to people in their sin.

  131. It forgives our sin.

  132. It pours out God's wrath on Christ

  133. for those who believe

  134. and imputes Christ's righteousness

  135. on those who believe.

  136. It deals with pardon for our sin.

  137. God's mercy is his loving relief

  138. of people in the misery

  139. of experiencing sin's effects.

  140. Whether their own sin

  141. or the sin of others

  142. or being in a fallen world.

  143. Mercy is God's compassion

  144. in action towards those in need.

  145. I want you to see it

  146. in the person of Jesus.

  147. When you look at the Gospels,

  148. your Gospels are just so full

  149. of your merciful King's heart

  150. towards those in need.

  151. It's just packed with it.

  152. So I picked four passages

  153. in which people actually ask Jesus for mercy.

  154. I just want you to see how he responds.

  155. In Matthew chapter 10,

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  156. there are these two blind guys

  157. and they cry out to Jesus,

  158. have mercy on us, son of David.

  159. Son of David is the title of the king.

  160. I mean, Jesus is Joseph's son,

  161. but he's David's greater son,

  162. the king.

  163. What does Jesus do?

  164. He goes into their house,

  165. he asks them some questions,

  166. and then he opens their eyes.

  167. What's the need?

  168. They can't see.

  169. What's the mercy?

  170. He causes them to see.

  171. Mercy.

  172. The next example I want you to see

  173. is in Matthew 15.

  174. Jesus is now not in Israel,

  175. he's in Tyre and Sidon,

  176. which is Gentile territory,

  177. and he walks into a woman's house

  178. and she's a Canaanite woman.

  179. And in verse 22,

  180. she says,

  181. Have mercy on me,

  182. O Lord, son of David.

  183. She acknowledges him

  184. as the son of David.

  185. And then she says,

  186. My daughter is severely oppressed

  187. by a demon.

  188. The need?

  189. Her daughter is being oppressed

  190. by a demon.

  191. Jesus hears it.

  192. And what does Jesus do?

  193. He heals the daughter

  194. of the demon.

  195. Do you know why?

  196. Because he's full of mercy.

  197. In Matthew 17,

  198. there's a guy,

  199. he comes up to Jesus,

  200. Lord, have mercy on my son,

  201. for he has seizures

  202. and he suffers terribly,

  203. for often he falls in the fire

  204. and often into the water.

  205. Jesus' disciples couldn't do anything,

  206. so Jesus did something about it.

  207. He cries out for mercy.

  208. The need is his son.

  209. This demon is just oppressing him.

  210. And what does Jesus do?

  211. He heals him.

  212. Matthew 20,

  213. two more dudes,

  214. blind guys,

  215. outside of Jericho.

  216. Lord, have mercy on us,

  217. son of David.

  218. You picking up on the theme?

  219. This king,

  220. and what does Jesus do?

  221. He sees the need,

  222. he has pity,

  223. he gives them sight.

  224. Do you know what this means?

  225. I mean,

  226. we haven't even talked about

  227. the woman

  228. who has 12 years of bleeding

  229. who comes up behind Jesus,

  230. touches him,

  231. and she's healed.

  232. Mercy!

  233. We even even talk about

  234. Jesus showing up

  235. at a wedding.

  236. His mom says,

  237. hey,

  238. we're short on wine.

  239. Jesus!

  240. And in his mercy,

  241. he makes water into wine.

  242. How about that?

  243. Our Jesus,

  244. the son of David,

  245. is full of mercy.

  246. Again,

  247. and again,

  248. and again,

  249. people in need

  250. come to him,

  251. and they cry out for mercy,

  252. and he gives it to them.

  253. He's tender.

  254. He welcomes the needy.

  255. He moves towards the needy.

  256. There's his ministry,

  257. and then there's his cross.

  258. Theologians talk about the cross

  259. as the place where justice

  260. and mercy meet.

  261. God's just wrath

  262. met by God's mercy,

  263. giving salvation

  264. to all who believe.

  265. You know,

  266. it's at the cross

  267. of Jesus Christ

  268. that he addresses

  269. and relieves

  270. our greatest need

  271. as human beings

  272. on the planet

  273. to be relieved

  274. from sin's penalty

  275. and power

  276. and one day

  277. sin's very presence.

  278. So we see this

  279. merciful king

  280. being tender

  281. in his mercy,

  282. in his ministry,

  283. two people,

  284. and then on the cross,

  285. and then there's

  286. the throne.

  287. Jesus died.

  288. He was buried.

  289. He was raised,

  290. and he ascended

  291. into heaven

  292. where he's at the

  293. right hand of God

  294. seated on the throne,

  295. and we learn

  296. from Hebrews,

  297. he,

  298. Jesus,

  299. is our merciful

  300. high priest

  301. who can identify

  302. and sympathize

  303. with us

  304. in every way,

  305. and he's like,

  306. come to the throne

  307. of grace,

  308. come to the throne

  309. of mercy

  310. in your need.

  311. Come find mercy.

  312. So,

  313. brothers and sisters,

  314. when you hear

  315. these words,

  316. blessed

  317. are the merciful,

  318. people,

  319. they're coming

  320. from the lips

  321. of mercy

  322. incarnate,

  323. the king

  324. who's full

  325. of mercy,

  326. compassion

  327. and action

  328. towards those

  329. in need,

  330. and his ministry

  331. on earth,

  332. on his cross,

  333. and on his throne.

  334. is he begrudging

  335. in his mercy?

  336. No.

  337. He's tender,

  338. eager to show mercy.

  339. Does that not

  340. tenderize your heart?

  341. That,

  342. that he would be

  343. that way to you

  344. and your need?

  345. Does that not just,

  346. I don't deserve that.

  347. Is anyone

  348. in the room

  349. in need?

  350. Material need?

  351. Emotional need?

  352. Relational need?

  353. Spiritual need?

  354. Take your cue.

  355. Son of David,

  356. have mercy

  357. on me.

  358. He's not going

  359. to begrudge you mercy.

  360. mercy.

  361. Jesus is mercy

  362. personified,

  363. mercy incarnate,

  364. and we,

  365. his people,

  366. are a mercy people.

  367. So we move

  368. from mercy personified

  369. to mercy people.

  370. Blessed are

  371. the merciful.

  372. And let me just

  373. remind you of

  374. how Jesus

  375. frames the Beatitudes.

  376. In 5.3,

  377. he says this,

  378. blessed are

  379. the poor in spirit.

  380. Then comes the promise,

  381. for theirs

  382. is the kingdom

  383. of heaven.

  384. Now,

  385. if you declare

  386. spiritual poverty

  387. to Jesus,

  388. he brings you

  389. into the kingdom.

  390. And then in verse 10,

  391. blessed are those

  392. who are persecuted

  393. for righteousness' sake,

  394. for theirs

  395. is the kingdom

  396. of heaven.

  397. You suffer for Jesus,

  398. it's just evidence

  399. that you're in the kingdom.

  400. kingdom.

  401. So,

  402. the first

  403. and the last

  404. of the Beatitudes,

  405. this character profile

  406. of a citizen

  407. of the kingdom,

  408. it's now kingdom.

  409. It's being brought

  410. into his kingdom

  411. now.

  412. These

  413. mercy people,

  414. blessed are the merciful,

  415. these are people

  416. who have been brought

  417. into the kingdom.

  418. kingdom.

  419. These are people

  420. who have already

  421. experienced

  422. the mercy of God.

  423. They've already been

  424. delivered from the

  425. domain of darkness

  426. and by God's grace

  427. and mercy

  428. transferred into

  429. the kingdom

  430. of the beloved son.

  431. Every Christian

  432. is to be characterized

  433. by all eight

  434. of these Beatitudes.

  435. It's who we are

  436. now that we've been

  437. made new,

  438. given new hearts,

  439. given new desires,

  440. given a new purpose.

  441. Our Father

  442. who art in heaven

  443. hallowed be your name,

  444. your kingdom come,

  445. your will be done.

  446. May we show mercy.

  447. This people,

  448. this merciful people,

  449. this blessed people,

  450. they've already

  451. been shown mercy.

  452. Listen to how Peter

  453. says in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  454. chapter 2.

  455. And mind you,

  456. he's writing to

  457. church of Gentiles

  458. and Jews.

  459. He says,

  460. but you are a chosen race,

  461. a royal priesthood,

  462. a holy nation,

  463. a people for his own

  464. possession,

  465. that you may proclaim

  466. the excellencies

  467. of him who called you

  468. out of darkness

  469. into his marvelous light.

  470. Once you were not

  471. a people,

  472. but now you are

  473. God's people.

  474. Once you had

  475. not received mercy,

  476. but now you have

  477. received mercy.

  478. Do you know why

  479. we are to be merciful?

  480. Because we've been

  481. received mercy.

  482. We've been

  483. mercied.

  484. Brothers,

  485. sister,

  486. God has

  487. mercifully

  488. helped you

  489. with your

  490. greatest need

  491. of all

  492. to be reconciled

  493. to him,

  494. to be rescued

  495. from your sin.

  496. And because

  497. we are a people

  498. of God's mercy,

  499. we are to show

  500. mercy

  501. to others

  502. because of God's

  503. tender mercy

  504. towards us,

  505. us in need,

  506. and we're still needy,

  507. so we are to

  508. be tender

  509. towards others

  510. in need.

  511. Now I can imagine

  512. someone in the room

  513. saying,

  514. time out.

  515. Whoa,

  516. time out,

  517. Salvati!

  518. We're all busy people.

  519. There will always

  520. be people in need.

  521. Is showing mercy

  522. really that important?

  523. Would you turn

  524. in your Bible

  525. to Matthew

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  526. chapter 25?

  527. It's one of my

  528. favorite sounds

  529. in the world

  530. right there.

  531. In Matthew

  532. 25,

  533. 31,

  534. Jesus is talking

  535. about what happens

  536. when he comes

  537. back.

  538. Listen to what

  539. he says,

  540. and then be

  541. listening

  542. for the

  543. concrete

  544. data point

  545. of his

  546. judgment

  547. at the

  548. end

  549. of time.

  550. When the

  551. Son of Man

  552. comes in

  553. his glory

  554. and all

  555. the angels

  556. with him,

  557. then he will

  558. sit on his

  559. glorious throne.

  560. Before him

  561. will be gathered

  562. all the

  563. nations,

  564. and he will

  565. separate

  566. people one

  567. from another

  568. as shepherd

  569. separates the

  570. sheep from

  571. the goats.

  572. That's talking

  573. about the

  574. judgment.

  575. And he

  576. will place

  577. the sheep

  578. on his

  579. right,

  580. but the

  581. goats on

  582. the left.

  583. So all of

  584. humanity

  585. separated at

  586. this point

  587. in time,

  588. at the throne

  589. by Jesus.

  590. Then the

  591. king will say

  592. to those on

  593. his right,

  594. come,

  595. you are

  596. blessed by

  597. my father,

  598. blessed by

  599. my father.

  600. Inherit the

  601. kingdom prepared

  602. for you from

  603. the foundation

  604. of the world.

  605. Lord.

  606. And then it

  607. gets personal.

  608. For I was

  609. hungry and

  610. you gave me

  611. food.

  612. I was thirsty

  613. and you

  614. gave me

  615. drink.

  616. I was a

  617. stranger and

  618. you welcomed

  619. me.

  620. I was naked

  621. and you

  622. clothed me.

  623. I was sick

  624. and you

  625. visited me.

  626. I was in

  627. prison and

  628. you came

  629. to me.

  630. Then the

  631. righteous will

  632. answer him

  633. saying,

  634. whoa,

  635. Lord,

  636. when did we

  637. see you hungry

  638. and feed you

  639. or thirsty

  640. and give you

  641. drink?

  642. And when did

  643. we see you

  644. a stranger

  645. and welcome

  646. you or naked

  647. and clothe

  648. you?

  649. And when

  650. did we see

  651. you sick

  652. or in

  653. prison and

  654. visit you?

  655. And then the

  656. king will

  657. answer them,

  658. the king of

  659. mercy.

  660. Truly I

  661. say to you,

  662. as you did

  663. it to one

  664. of these

  665. least,

  666. one of the

  667. least of

  668. these my

  669. brothers,

  670. these sheep

  671. on my

  672. right,

  673. one of the

  674. least,

  675. one of the

  676. most needy

  677. and vulnerable

  678. as you did

  679. to them,

  680. you did to

  681. me.

  682. Is it

  683. important?

  684. It shows

  685. up at the

  686. judgment.

  687. whether you

  688. show mercy

  689. or not

  690. is the

  691. stuff,

  692. the evidence

  693. that demonstrates

  694. you've been

  695. transferred from

  696. the kingdom of

  697. darkness into

  698. the kingdom of

  699. the beloved

  700. son.

  701. There's no

  702. arguing it.

  703. It's

  704. undeniable

  705. proof of

  706. conversion.

  707. In

  708. Matthew

  709. 7,

  710. this is at

  711. the end of

  712. the sermon

  713. on the

  714. mount.

  715. In verse

  716. 21,

  717. Jesus

  718. says something

  719. similar.

  720. Not everyone

  721. who says to

  722. me,

  723. Lord,

  724. Lord,

  725. will enter

  726. the kingdom

  727. of heaven,

  728. but the

  729. one who

  730. does the

  731. will of

  732. my

  733. father,

  734. who is

  735. in heaven.

  736. On that

  737. day,

  738. what we

  739. just read,

  740. on that

  741. day,

  742. many will

  743. say to

  744. me,

  745. Lord,

  746. Lord,

  747. did we

  748. not prophesy

  749. in your

  750. name,

  751. and cast

  752. out demons

  753. in your

  754. name,

  755. and do

  756. many mighty

  757. works in

  758. your name,

  759. and then I

  760. will declare

  761. to them,

  762. I never

  763. knew you,

  764. depart from

  765. me,

  766. you workers

  767. of lawlessness.

  768. You know

  769. what?

  770. You know

  771. what Jesus

  772. is looking

  773. for?

  774. Mercy,

  775. not sacrifice.

  776. Mercy,

  777. not big

  778. shows of

  779. spirituality.

  780. He's looking

  781. for mercy.

  782. You showing

  783. mercy to

  784. people in

  785. need,

  786. just as he

  787. showed you

  788. mercy in

  789. your need.

  790. Blessed are

  791. the merciful.

  792. He has

  793. shown us

  794. mercy.

  795. The tender

  796. mercy of

  797. God is

  798. to tenderize

  799. our hearts

  800. to those

  801. in need.

  802. It is

  803. proof positive

  804. you're in the

  805. kingdom,

  806. and if it's

  807. not there,

  808. the question

  809. is,

  810. are you in

  811. the kingdom?

  812. I don't know

  813. about you,

  814. but this

  815. kind of

  816. tender

  817. mercy,

  818. boy,

  819. it tenderizes

  820. me.

  821. mercy.

  822. That's

  823. mercy,

  824. people.

  825. Those who

  826. have been

  827. shown mercy,

  828. they're

  829. blessed.

  830. But maybe

  831. you're sitting

  832. in your pew

  833. saying,

  834. gulp.

  835. I'm not

  836. sure if I'm

  837. seeing the

  838. mercy that

  839. Jesus is

  840. talking about.

  841. Maybe

  842. some of

  843. you are

  844. getting a

  845. nervous.

  846. I want

  847. to help

  848. you right

  849. now in

  850. talking about

  851. mercy's

  852. pathway.

  853. Because

  854. mercy

  855. flows

  856. down and

  857. out

  858. from the

  859. throne in

  860. heaven down

  861. to earth

  862. and out to

  863. people in

  864. need.

  865. there's

  866. this flow,

  867. but it

  868. gets

  869. dammed

  870. up.

  871. There's

  872. this

  873. principle

  874. throughout

  875. your

  876. Bible.

  877. It's a

  878. cause and

  879. effect

  880. principle.

  881. And we

  882. see it

  883. in a

  884. passage like

  885. 1 John.

  886. 1 John 4.

  887. You don't need to

  888. turn there.

  889. I'll turn there

  890. and read it

  891. for you.

  892. In 1 John 4,

  893. we read

  894. this.

  895. Listen for the

  896. cause and

  897. effect.

  898. Do you

  899. see the

  900. cause and

  901. effect?

  902. God loves

  903. us.

  904. We love

  905. others.

  906. Vertical

  907. horizontal.

  908. We see it

  909. in John 13

  910. in the

  911. new commandment.

  912. A new

  913. commandment I

  914. give to you,

  915. that you

  916. love one

  917. another.

  918. Just as I

  919. have loved

  920. you, you

  921. are to

  922. love one

  923. another.

  924. And by

  925. this, all

  926. people will

  927. know that

  928. you're my

  929. disciples.

  930. Jesus is

  931. the great

  932. example and

  933. source of

  934. our love

  935. for one

  936. another.

  937. He loves

  938. us.

  939. We love

  940. one another.

  941. Mercy

  942. flows along

  943. the same

  944. route.

  945. Because

  946. mercy is

  947. actually a

  948. demonstration

  949. of love.

  950. It's an

  951. exercise of

  952. love to

  953. other people,

  954. those in

  955. need.

  956. So God

  957. has mercy

  958. on us,

  959. and we

  960. have mercy

  961. towards

  962. others.

  963. Imagine

  964. you are in

  965. a, you

  966. own a

  967. cabin in

  968. Colorado,

  969. and I'm

  970. going to make

  971. up the mountain

  972. you're next to.

  973. it's called

  974. mercy peak.

  975. And mercy

  976. peak, it's

  977. topped, it's

  978. capped with

  979. snow, it's

  980. snow melt, runs

  981. down this

  982. mountainous stream

  983. called

  984. mercy stream.

  985. And mercy

  986. stream flows

  987. into, next to

  988. your cabin,

  989. mercy lake.

  990. It's pristine

  991. waters, it's

  992. snow melt.

  993. Every morning you

  994. drink it up and

  995. you drink out

  996. of it.

  997. It just gives

  998. you life.

  999. And then what

  1000. you do is you're

  1001. like, oh this is

  1002. so good.

  1003. You get buckets

  1004. of it and you

  1005. carry it over to

  1006. your neighbors so

  1007. that everybody

  1008. drinks from

  1009. mercy lake.

  1010. And everybody's

  1011. like, yes, we

  1012. love the water

  1013. of mercy lake.

  1014. Well one morning

  1015. you wake up and

  1016. you walk outside

  1017. and your mercy

  1018. lake is a mud

  1019. puddle.

  1020. So you pull out

  1021. your binoculars.

  1022. Okay, there's

  1023. still snow on

  1024. Mercy Peak.

  1025. Oh yep, I can,

  1026. yep, there's some

  1027. kind of snow run

  1028. off.

  1029. I see it, yep,

  1030. yep, yep, yep,

  1031. yep.

  1032. I'm following it

  1033. down.

  1034. Oh, oh, there's a

  1035. problem.

  1036. Huh.

  1037. About 400 yards

  1038. up there's been

  1039. this dam of

  1040. stumps, of

  1041. brush, of

  1042. rocks.

  1043. There's this

  1044. sticks, trees,

  1045. and they have

  1046. formed this dam

  1047. and it's blocking

  1048. Mercy Stream from

  1049. running.

  1050. Do you know what

  1051. you're going to

  1052. need to do?

  1053. You're going to

  1054. get your hiking

  1055. boots on.

  1056. You're going to

  1057. go up there and

  1058. you're going to

  1059. dismantle the

  1060. dam so that

  1061. mercy flows.

  1062. Do you know

  1063. where I'm going?

  1064. If you find

  1065. yourself impatient,

  1066. frustrated,

  1067. avoiding,

  1068. disgusted,

  1069. unwilling to be

  1070. inconvenienced for

  1071. people in need,

  1072. you've got a dam

  1073. on your mercy

  1074. stream, on God's

  1075. mercy.

  1076. It's in you.

  1077. It's in your

  1078. heart.

  1079. And the way that

  1080. you dismantle that

  1081. dam is by

  1082. confession of the

  1083. sin, that allows

  1084. mercy to flow and

  1085. you need mercy

  1086. first and foremost

  1087. for yourself.

  1088. You need a drink

  1089. of that lake.

  1090. You need mercy.

  1091. So let me press

  1092. into that.

  1093. this dismantling of

  1094. the dam that

  1095. backs up mercy to

  1096. you and to

  1097. others.

  1098. Well, you've

  1099. got to remove the

  1100. sticks of

  1101. impatience.

  1102. Oh God, forgive

  1103. me.

  1104. Son of David, have

  1105. mercy on me.

  1106. I see my

  1107. impatience again.

  1108. Forgive me.

  1109. There's the brush

  1110. of busyness.

  1111. business.

  1112. I was in New

  1113. York City recently

  1114. and I love to

  1115. ride the subway.

  1116. But the subway

  1117. would shoot through

  1118. these like subway

  1119. stations at 900

  1120. miles an hour.

  1121. And you're like

  1122. looking out the

  1123. window and you're

  1124. going so fast,

  1125. people on the

  1126. subway station

  1127. platform are just

  1128. a blur.

  1129. For many of us,

  1130. we're living life

  1131. so busy, we're

  1132. flying by people

  1133. in need.

  1134. We've got to

  1135. dismantle the

  1136. brush of busyness.

  1137. We've got to

  1138. slow down.

  1139. There's a pile up

  1140. of the stumps

  1141. of grudges.

  1142. Maybe you've

  1143. tried to help

  1144. somebody.

  1145. Maybe they've

  1146. bitten you.

  1147. Maybe they've

  1148. gotten mad at

  1149. you.

  1150. Maybe they're

  1151. like, I want to

  1152. be helped this

  1153. way.

  1154. And it's like,

  1155. I'm not putting

  1156. myself up against

  1157. that again.

  1158. You need

  1159. mercy.

  1160. That's backing

  1161. up the flow.

  1162. Oh God, have

  1163. mercy on me for

  1164. holding a grudge

  1165. against this

  1166. person I'm

  1167. trying to help

  1168. and they're just

  1169. not letting me

  1170. help them the

  1171. way I want to

  1172. help them.

  1173. The rocks of

  1174. the unwillingness

  1175. to be

  1176. inconvenienced.

  1177. Maybe it

  1178. shows up like

  1179. this.

  1180. You encounter

  1181. someone in

  1182. need and

  1183. you're like,

  1184. that's above

  1185. my pay grade.

  1186. Pastor!

  1187. No.

  1188. You're not

  1189. above that.

  1190. That's not

  1191. above you.

  1192. It's not

  1193. beyond you.

  1194. Our Lord Jesus

  1195. wants mercy,

  1196. not avoidance,

  1197. engaging people,

  1198. moving towards

  1199. people.

  1200. There's another

  1201. area that's a

  1202. little delicate.

  1203. Our

  1204. affluence.

  1205. Listen to

  1206. 1 Timothy 6.

  1207. As for the

  1208. rich in this

  1209. present age,

  1210. charge them

  1211. not to be

  1212. haughty,

  1213. to think that

  1214. they're better,

  1215. to separate

  1216. themselves,

  1217. to not be

  1218. willing to get

  1219. their hands

  1220. dirty,

  1221. nor to set

  1222. their hopes

  1223. on the

  1224. uncertainty of

  1225. riches,

  1226. but on God

  1227. who richly

  1228. provides us

  1229. with everything

  1230. to enjoy.

  1231. They are to

  1232. do good,

  1233. to be rich

  1234. in good works,

  1235. rich in mercy.

  1236. To be

  1237. generous and

  1238. ready to

  1239. share,

  1240. thus storing up

  1241. treasures for

  1242. themselves as

  1243. a good foundation

  1244. for the future,

  1245. so that they

  1246. may take hold

  1247. of that which

  1248. is truly life.

  1249. Yes,

  1250. even our

  1251. affluence

  1252. can be a

  1253. dam to

  1254. the flow of

  1255. God's mercy.

  1256. Oh,

  1257. Lord,

  1258. have mercy on

  1259. me for

  1260. seeing,

  1261. for allowing

  1262. my wealth

  1263. to get in

  1264. the way of

  1265. helping people

  1266. in need.

  1267. this is what's

  1268. going to take

  1269. for us to

  1270. dismantle

  1271. these dams.

  1272. What it

  1273. gets at

  1274. is our

  1275. ongoing need

  1276. for mercy.

  1277. Ironically,

  1278. there is

  1279. mercy

  1280. to help you

  1281. dismantle

  1282. your dam.

  1283. And then

  1284. there is

  1285. mercy

  1286. that meets

  1287. you when

  1288. you are

  1289. like,

  1290. oh,

  1291. this is

  1292. bad.

  1293. Mercy!

  1294. Oh,

  1295. I don't

  1296. like this

  1297. attitude.

  1298. God,

  1299. that must

  1300. agree with you.

  1301. Mercy!

  1302. Mercy,

  1303. mercy,

  1304. mercy,

  1305. mercy me.

  1306. mercy.

  1307. I don't

  1308. know about

  1309. you,

  1310. but when

  1311. I see

  1312. these things

  1313. in myself,

  1314. son of

  1315. David,

  1316. have mercy

  1317. on me.

  1318. Have mercy

  1319. on me

  1320. for my

  1321. merciless

  1322. heart,

  1323. for a

  1324. lack of

  1325. tenderness

  1326. towards

  1327. these people

  1328. in need.

  1329. Could it

  1330. be,

  1331. brothers,

  1332. the reason

  1333. why

  1334. there's not

  1335. more mercy

  1336. is because

  1337. of our

  1338. sin?

  1339. Brothers

  1340. and sisters,

  1341. blessed are

  1342. the merciful.

  1343. Aren't you

  1344. glad to know

  1345. God's mercy

  1346. is more?

  1347. God,

  1348. mercy is

  1349. bigger than

  1350. my heart.

  1351. Mercy has

  1352. a pathway,

  1353. down and

  1354. out,

  1355. and God

  1356. wants to

  1357. adjust your

  1358. heart to

  1359. use you

  1360. to extending

  1361. mercy,

  1362. bringing

  1363. buckets of

  1364. water to

  1365. people in

  1366. need.

  1367. So now

  1368. let's look at

  1369. this mercy

  1370. promised.

  1371. This

  1372. beatitude

  1373. is broken

  1374. into two

  1375. parts.

  1376. It's like

  1377. the rest

  1378. of the

  1379. beatitudes.

  1380. There is

  1381. this

  1382. character

  1383. trait,

  1384. merciful,

  1385. blessed,

  1386. it's of

  1387. God,

  1388. it's a

  1389. result of

  1390. God's

  1391. grace,

  1392. and then

  1393. there's a

  1394. promise.

  1395. And in

  1396. this case,

  1397. it's a

  1398. future

  1399. promise.

  1400. Blessed

  1401. are the

  1402. merciful,

  1403. for they

  1404. shall receive

  1405. mercy.

  1406. Now that

  1407. might sound a

  1408. little confusing

  1409. to some

  1410. of you.

  1411. Because it

  1412. may sound

  1413. like Jesus

  1414. is making

  1415. future mercy

  1416. conditional on

  1417. your present

  1418. mercy shown.

  1419. It can sound

  1420. something like

  1421. this,

  1422. if you show

  1423. mercy now,

  1424. then I will

  1425. show you

  1426. mercy then.

  1427. it can sound

  1428. like God

  1429. will show

  1430. us future

  1431. mercy

  1432. depending on

  1433. our show

  1434. of present

  1435. mercy to

  1436. others.

  1437. It sounds

  1438. conditional.

  1439. Is it?

  1440. No.

  1441. Jesus isn't

  1442. saying that.

  1443. If Jesus were

  1444. saying that,

  1445. we'd have to

  1446. throw out our

  1447. New Testament.

  1448. it.

  1449. Jesus is

  1450. saying something

  1451. else.

  1452. Because

  1453. salvation,

  1454. our salvation,

  1455. is not by

  1456. works.

  1457. Our salvation

  1458. is not

  1459. conditioned on

  1460. our obedience,

  1461. on our

  1462. obedient show

  1463. of mercy.

  1464. Our salvation

  1465. depends solely

  1466. on God's

  1467. grace and

  1468. mercy.

  1469. mercy.

  1470. So,

  1471. so if it's

  1472. not that,

  1473. what is

  1474. Jesus saying?

  1475. Well,

  1476. remember who

  1477. he's talking

  1478. to.

  1479. That these

  1480. citizens of

  1481. heaven are

  1482. people who've

  1483. already been

  1484. brought into

  1485. the kingdom

  1486. of the

  1487. beloved son.

  1488. Remember,

  1489. theirs is the

  1490. kingdom of

  1491. heaven.

  1492. That's what

  1493. bookends this

  1494. group of

  1495. people.

  1496. These people

  1497. have been

  1498. shown mercy.

  1499. These,

  1500. these blessed

  1501. ones,

  1502. they've been

  1503. shown mercy.

  1504. First Peter

  1505. 2, 9, and

  1506. 10.

  1507. These blessed

  1508. kingdom citizens

  1509. are being

  1510. shown mercy.

  1511. They have a

  1512. merciful high

  1513. priest who

  1514. pours out

  1515. mercy from

  1516. his throne.

  1517. And they

  1518. will be

  1519. shown mercy

  1520. at the

  1521. judgment.

  1522. Do you

  1523. remember the

  1524. response of

  1525. the people

  1526. on the right

  1527. hand of

  1528. Jesus, the

  1529. king in

  1530. Matthew 25?

  1531. They're like,

  1532. what?

  1533. When did we

  1534. show you

  1535. mercy,

  1536. king?

  1537. all along?

  1538. When you're

  1539. showing mercy

  1540. to the

  1541. least of

  1542. these of

  1543. mine that

  1544. I paid

  1545. for?

  1546. Listen up.

  1547. If you're in

  1548. the kingdom,

  1549. the judgment

  1550. throne is a

  1551. mercy throne.

  1552. The judgment

  1553. throne is a

  1554. mercy throne.

  1555. Jesus is not

  1556. making a

  1557. future mercy

  1558. conditioned on

  1559. our present

  1560. obedience.

  1561. This is

  1562. future mercy

  1563. promised to

  1564. present kingdom

  1565. citizens, those

  1566. already who've

  1567. been brought

  1568. into the

  1569. kingdom.

  1570. And now

  1571. proof positive

  1572. of their

  1573. citizenship is

  1574. they show

  1575. mercy, just

  1576. as their

  1577. king has

  1578. shown them

  1579. mercy.

  1580. You know

  1581. what that

  1582. makes a

  1583. weekend say?

  1584. Light of

  1585. the judgment?

  1586. Son of

  1587. David, you

  1588. will show

  1589. mercy to

  1590. me on

  1591. that day.

  1592. There is

  1593. therefore now

  1594. no condemnation

  1595. for those who

  1596. are in

  1597. Christ Jesus.

  1598. There is

  1599. mercy.

  1600. Do I have

  1601. an amen?

  1602. Amen?

  1603. mercy awaits

  1604. brothers and

  1605. sisters.

  1606. And I

  1607. don't know

  1608. about you,

  1609. but that

  1610. mercy to

  1611. come tenderizes

  1612. me to show

  1613. mercy now.

  1614. Mercy

  1615. personified.

  1616. The one

  1617. speaking this

  1618. beatitude is

  1619. mercy incarnate.

  1620. His

  1621. ministry is

  1622. cross his

  1623. throne.

  1624. mercy people.

  1625. We've been

  1626. mercied.

  1627. We've been

  1628. brought into

  1629. the kingdom

  1630. by his

  1631. mercy.

  1632. We once

  1633. were not

  1634. shown mercy,

  1635. now we

  1636. have been

  1637. shown mercy.

  1638. There's this

  1639. mercy pathway.

  1640. It flows

  1641. down and

  1642. out.

  1643. And maybe

  1644. you've got

  1645. some work

  1646. this afternoon

  1647. to confess

  1648. and dismantle

  1649. some of the

  1650. things blocking

  1651. the flow of

  1652. mercy to you

  1653. and others.

  1654. Mercy

  1655. promised.

  1656. Mercy

  1657. awaits.

  1658. We look

  1659. forward to

  1660. that day.

  1661. Now you may

  1662. be asking this

  1663. question,

  1664. maybe you've

  1665. been asking

  1666. it all

  1667. along.

  1668. Who do I

  1669. show mercy

  1670. to?

  1671. And I'm

  1672. going to

  1673. close by

  1674. reading another

  1675. parable of

  1676. Jesus where he

  1677. answers that

  1678. question.

  1679. said to him,

  1680. and behold,

  1681. a lawyer stood

  1682. up to put him

  1683. to the test,

  1684. saying,

1685. what shall I do to inherit

  1686. eternal life?

  1687. He said to him,

1688. what is written in the law?

1689. How do you read it?

  1690. And the lawyer answered,

1691. you shall love the Lord your God

1692. with all your heart and with all

1693. your soul and with all your

1694. strength and with all your mind

1695. and your neighbor as yourself.

1696. And Jesus said to him,

  1697. you have answered correctly.

1698. Do this and you will live.

  1699. But he, the lawyer,

  1700. desiring to justify himself,

  1701. said to Jesus,

1702. and who is my neighbor?

  1703. Jesus replied,

1704. a man was going down

  1705. from Jerusalem to Jericho

1706. and he fell among robbers

  1707. who stripped him

  1708. and beat him

  1709. and departed,

  1710. leaving him half dead.

  1711. Now by chance,

  1712. a Jewish priest

  1713. was going down

  1714. that road

1715. and when he saw him,

  1716. he passed by

  1717. on the other side,

  1718. maybe saying,

1719. I need to get to this

  1720. prayer meeting.

  1721. So likewise,

  1722. a Jewish Levite,

1723. when he came to the place

  1724. and saw him,

1725. passed by on the other side.

1726. I've got kingdom work to do.

  1727. But a Samaritan,

  1728. as he journeyed,

1729. came to where he was

1730. and when he saw him,

  1731. he had compassion.

  1732. He went to him

1733. and bound up his wounds,

1734. pouring on oil and wine.

  1735. Then he sent him

  1736. on his own animal

1737. and brought him to an inn

1738. and took care of him.

  1739. And the next day,

1740. he took out two denarii

1741. and gave them to the innkeeper,

  1742. saying,

  1743. Take care of him

1744. and whatever more you spend,

  1745. I will repay you

  1746. when I come back.

  1747. Jesus then said,

  1748. Which of these three

  1749. do you think,

  1750. Mr. Lawyer,

1751. proved to be a neighbor

  1752. to the man

1753. who fell among the robbers?

  1754. And the lawyer said,

1755. The one who showed mercy.

1756. And Jesus said to him,

1757. You go and do likewise.

  1758. Brothers and sisters,

1759. the kingdom of heaven has come.

  1760. We've been mercied.

1761. Now let's go and do likewise.

1762. Let's go with the flow

  1763. and let's show mercy

1764. as those who've been tenderized

1765. by the very mercy of God.

1766. And you know what's going to happen?

1767. It's going to distinguish us

1768. from the rest of the world

  1769. who is merciless.

  1770. Let's pray.

  1771. God in heaven,

  1772. we are a people

1773. in need of your mercy

  1774. every day.

  1775. Forgive us

  1776. for allowing other things

1777. to get in the way

1778. of us seeing our need

  1779. and drinking deep

  1780. from your flow

  1781. of mercy to us.

  1782. Oh, we're so grateful

  1783. that we can come

1784. to your throne of mercy

  1785. and find mercy

  1786. in time of need.

  1787. We thank you, Jesus,

  1788. that you see us

  1789. as we are.

1790. Lord, would you use us?

  1791. Would you help us

1792. to see people in need

  1793. with eyes of mercy,

  1794. tender,

  1795. helpful,

  1796. humble,

  1797. and pray this

  1798. in Jesus' name?

  1799. Amen.
