  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5, it's on page 962 of your Pew Bible.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. And let me read, let me read the beginning of this sermon from Jesus.

  3. Seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him,

  4. just like we've come to Him today.

  5. And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying,

  6. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  7. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  8. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  9. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  10. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  11. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  12. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  13. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  14. May God bless the hearing of His word.

  15. Well, if you are a follower of Jesus, if you are a Christian, you are a citizen of heaven.

  16. You have been delivered from the domain of darkness, and you've been transferred into the kingdom of His beloved Son.

  17. What Jesus says here is the kingdom of heaven.

  18. And in God's kingdom, character matters.

  19. In His kingdom manifesto, the Sermon on the Mount, which is Matthew 5, 6, and 7,

  20. Jesus begins with an eight-point character profile of each and every one of His kingdom's citizens.

  21. This is to be true of every one of us who are a follower of Jesus.

  22. This is to be true of every one of us who are a follower of Jesus.

  23. But I do have Google.

  24. So I looked up what is an echocardiogram, and I'm summing it up, but this is what it is.

  25. It's a painless process by which your heart in your chest is mapped by sound waves.

  26. So there's an echocardiogram machine.

  27. It gets hooked up, and it shoots sound waves into your chest, and an image is put forward of your heart.

  28. So your doctor can see the structure of your heart fundamentally to make sure you're alive.

  29. Also, the doctor wants to see the blood flow in your heart to make sure there's no kind of buildups within your heart.

  30. And she's also checking for the right ordering of your valves.

  31. So an echocardiogram, well, it's a tool to assess the physical well-being of that one-pound muscle pumping blood in your chest right now.

  32. But this morning, these words of Jesus are an echocardiogram of a different sort.

  33. His words are echoing through your soul.

  34. And we're going to see some things.

  35. It may not be painless this morning.

  36. We know from Hebrews chapter 4 that the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  37. It pierces joint and marrow and discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  38. Hebrews 4.12 isn't talking about the muscle in your chest.

  39. It's talking about this part of you that is the central operating system of your being.

  40. These words of Jesus, blessed are the pure in heart.

  41. It's his divine echocardiogram to help us see our own health of our own hearts.

  42. And so this echocardiogram this morning is going to proceed in two steps.

  43. Step number one, we're going to ask this question, what does Jesus mean by pure in heart?

  44. We're going to spend the bulk of our time this morning on that phrase.

  45. And then we're going to proceed to the second question, what does Jesus mean by this promise?

  46. For they shall see God.

  47. What I want you to help you to see is the pure in heart, well, they know they're not pure in heart.

  48. But because of God's grace, they're striving to be pure in heart because they're in the kingdom.

  49. The pure in heart strive to be pure in heart.

  50. So let's ask and answer this first question.

  51. What does Jesus mean by being pure in heart?

  52. Blessed are the pure in heart.

  53. What does that mean?

  54. Again, we're not talking about the muscle in your chest.

  55. Jesus is talking about a different heart.

  56. And I just want to help you think, what does the Bible mean by heart?

  57. First, when the Bible talks about our hearts, the heart is central to your being.

  58. Your heart is central to your being.

  59. The Bible talks about the heart as the operational center of who you are.

  60. We see that in Hebrews 4.12, but we also see it in Proverbs 4.23.

  61. Guard your heart above all else, for from it flow the wellsprings of life.

  62. You live your life out of your heart.

  63. Here's the thing, Americans make this head-heart split.

  64. You think with your heart, and you think with your head, and you feel with your heart.

  65. The Bible's use of heart doesn't rule that way.

  66. The Bible talks about the heart as the seat of your thinking, of your emotions, of your desires, and of your will.

  67. It's all in one spot.

  68. And it determines how you live your life.

  69. Any Star Trek fans?

  70. I'm not talking newer Star Trek.

  71. I'm talking old school Star Trek.

  72. Yeah.

  73. Captain Kirk.

  74. Scotty.

  75. Bones.

  76. Spock.

  77. If you were a Klingon, and you wanted to take over the USS Enterprise, where would you be beamed into?

  78. The bridge.

  79. Because the bridge of the USS Enterprise is the controlling center of the ship.

  80. You've got comms there, weapons there.

  81. You've got navigational direction, the throttle, whatever that looked like.

  82. It's all there on the bridge.

  83. Whatever controlled the bridge of the USS Enterprise controlled the USS Enterprise.

  84. So it is with your heart.

  85. Your heart is the place, the operational center of your life, and whatever controls your thinking, and your feeling, and your desires, and your will controls your life.

  86. Your heart is central to your being.

  87. But it's not just central to your being.

  88. It's central to your worship.

  89. What you worship.

  90. It's your praise factory.

  91. God has hardwired you for this.

  92. There's 8.2 billion people on the planet.

  93. And they're all hardwired to worship.

  94. It's not if you're going to worship something.

  95. It's what are you worshiping.

  96. Etymology is the study of the origin of words.

  97. and the etymology of the word worship is quite interesting.

  98. It comes from an old English word, worth-ship.

  99. It's where you are recognizing something's value,

  100. something's worth,

  101. and then you're responding accordingly to it.

  102. And when we talk about worship in the context of God,

  103. it's we are recognizing His unsurpassed worth

  104. and we are giving Him the praise due His name.

  105. Psalm 96.4,

  106. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

  107. That is a function of your heart.

  108. And so when Jesus says,

  109. blessed are the pure in heart,

  110. He's addressing the center of your being,

  111. the center of your worship,

  112. of your praise generator,

  113. of your worship center,

  114. and I hope you're starting to sense

  115. how important your heart is to God.

  116. Your heart is also central to your problems.

  117. Yesterday morning, I gave a talk to the men of our church

  118. on self-control and sexuality,

  119. and at one point I said this,

  120. when the world,

  121. and what I mean by that is sinful humanity

  122. in organized rebellion against God,

  123. when the world sees someone doing something wrong or evil,

  124. usually the world will explain that in one of two ways.

  125. Nature,

  126. they were genetically disposed to that,

  127. or nurture,

  128. well, they were raised in a context

  129. that predisposed them to that.

  130. Your Bibles tend to not disregard those,

  131. but what your Bible will do,

  132. what God will do,

  133. is say the source of evil in human beings

  134. is a nasty,

  135. not nature,

  136. not nurture,

  137. nasty.

  138. It's your heart.

  139. The source of evil in each of us

  140. is resident in our hearts.

  141. When Adam and Eve sinned,

  142. they introduced sin into the world,

  143. into our experience,

  144. and each and every one of us since

  145. has been born with a sinful nature.

  146. And so,

  147. if you would turn with me to Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  148. I want you to see how Jesus talks about it.

  149. Any IT people in the room?

  150. IT?

  151. I don't even know what it means.

  152. That tells you how IT-oriented I am.

  153. But let's just say this.

  154. If your heart is the operating system of your life,

  155. sin is a wicked malware that came with it.

  156. Listen to what Jesus has to say.

  157. Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7:20–23

  158. verses 20 through 23.

  159. Jesus' disciples didn't wash their hands.

  160. The Pharisees are like,

  161. naughty boys,

  162. you've been defiled in the eyes of God.

  163. And Jesus is like,

  164. no.

  165. It's not what goes into you

  166. that defiles you.

  167. And then he goes,

  168. in verse 20,

  169. what comes out of a person

  170. is what defiles them.

  171. For from within,

  172. where, Jesus?

  173. Where from within?

  174. Out of the heart of man

  175. come evil thoughts,

  176. sexual immorality,

  177. theft,

  178. murder,

  179. adultery,

  180. coveting,

  181. wickedness,

  182. deceit,

  183. sensuality,

  184. envy,

  185. slander,

  186. pride,

  187. foolishness.

  188. 13 things.

  189. Just,

  190. it's representative.

  191. All of these evil things

  192. come from within,

  193. and they defile a person.

  194. John Calvin talked about

  195. your heart as being

  196. an idol factory.

  197. Sin factory.

  198. So,

  199. so not only is your heart

  200. the center of your being

  201. and the center of your worship,

  202. it's the center of your problems.

  203. It's the source of sin in you.

  204. You can't blame nature.

  205. You can't blame nurture.

  206. You got sin in you

  207. that God holds you

  208. responsible for.

  209. Here's the effect.

  210. It deadens you to God.

  211. In Ephesians,

    Ephesians 2:1

  212. chapter 2,

  213. verse 1,

  214. says,

  215. and you were dead

  216. in the trespasses

  217. and sins

  218. in which you once walked,

  219. dead to God.

  220. And that's just not deadness.

  221. You've been defiled.

  222. Your sin defiles you

  223. in God's eyes.

  224. That's what Jesus' point is

  225. in Mark 7.

  226. And it's just not that.

  227. Sin brings about

  228. a disorder of loves

  229. in your heart.

  230. It's the whole point

  231. of Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  232. You exchange the truth

  233. of God for a lie.

  234. You exchange the creator

  235. for the creator created.

  236. And you're going to have

  237. idols all abounding.

  238. It disorders your loves.

  239. You start to put

  240. created things

  241. over the creator.

  242. That's a sinful

  243. disordering.

  244. That's called idolatry.

  245. Your heart

  246. is central

  247. to your problems.

  248. Anybody want some good news?

  249. your heart

  250. is central

  251. to God's work

  252. of salvation.

  253. Do you know

  254. what's amazing

  255. about God's love?

  256. We were just singing

  257. about it.

  258. For God so loved

  259. the world.

  260. Sinful humanity

  261. and organized rebellion

  262. against God.

  263. For God so loved

  264. the dead

  265. in their sin.

  266. The defiled

  267. in their sin.

  268. The disordered

  269. loves

  270. of sinful humanity.

  271. For God so loved

  272. the world

  273. that he gave

  274. his only begotten son.

  275. It's not that

  276. we're

  277. lovable.

  278. It's that

  279. he is loving.

  280. And in his

  281. great love

  282. for us

  283. he carries

  284. out a work

  285. of salvation

  286. that addresses

  287. this sin problem

  288. deep within

  289. us.

  290. In fact

  291. Zach alluded

  292. to it in his

  293. prayer.

  294. This has always

  295. been the plan.

  296. In Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  297. chapter 36

  298. we hear this

  299. prophecy.

  300. I will sprinkle

  301. clean water

  302. on you

  303. and you shall

  304. be clean

  305. from all your

  306. uncleanliness

  307. and from all

  308. your idols

  309. I will cleanse

  310. you.

  311. And I will

  312. give you a new

  313. heart

  314. and a new

  315. spirit I will

  316. put within

  317. you.

  318. And I will

  319. remove the

  320. heart of stone

  321. from your

  322. flesh

  323. and give you

  324. a heart

  325. of flesh

  326. and I will

  327. put my

  328. spirit within

  329. you

  330. and cause

  331. you to

  332. walk in

  333. my statutes

  334. and be

  335. careful to

  336. obey my

  337. rules.

  338. You see

  339. in the

  340. new

  341. covenant

  342. that was

  343. established

  344. by Jesus

  345. on the

  346. cross

  347. he brought

  348. in

  349. Ezekiel

  350. 36.

  351. Salvation

  352. now at

  353. its essence

  354. is a

  355. heart

  356. transplant

  357. by the

  358. miracle

  359. of the

  360. Holy Spirit

  361. working in

  362. you.

  363. He

  364. removes

  365. your

  366. stony

  367. heart

  368. that was

  369. dead to

  370. God

  371. and replaces

  372. it with

  373. a fleshly

  374. living heart

  375. wanting to

  376. obey

  377. God.

  378. What a

  379. glorious

  380. plan.

  381. It's

  382. something only

  383. God can

  384. do and

  385. that gets

  386. us at

  387. the power

  388. of the

  389. gospel of

  390. Jesus

  391. Christ.

  392. When a

  393. sinner

  394. dead in

  395. their sin

  396. defiled by

  397. sin

  398. disordered by

  399. sin

  400. puts their

  401. faith in

  402. the Christ

  403. who died

  404. and was

  405. raised for

  406. their sin

  407. that alone

  408. has the

  409. power to

  410. flip a

  411. human being

  412. from being

  413. a worshiper

  414. of sin

  415. to a

  416. worshiper

  417. of God.

  418. That alone

  419. changes their

  420. hearts.

  421. It's a

  422. miracle.

  423. It's a

  424. miracle.

  425. Ephesians 2

  426. talks about it

  427. as being

  428. dead in

  429. sin but

  430. God made

  431. us alive

  432. in Christ.

  433. Your

  434. heart

  435. is very

  436. important to

  437. God.

  438. He sent

  439. Jesus

  440. to change

  441. your heart.

  442. So you

  443. may be

  444. asking,

  445. okay,

  446. why is

  447. Jesus

  448. getting to

  449. the heart

  450. now in

  451. the Beatitudes?

  452. We're on

  453. Beatitude

  454. number six.

  455. If the

  456. heart is so

  457. important,

  458. why is

  459. he talking

  460. about it

  461. now?

  462. He's been

  463. talking about

  464. it all

  465. along.

  466. Poor in

  467. spirit,

  468. where do you

  469. think that

  470. is?

  471. Mourning

  472. your sin,

  473. where do you

  474. think that

  475. comes from?

  476. Being meek,

  477. humble,

  478. of heart?

  479. What do you

  480. think hungering

  481. and thirsting

  482. for righteousness

  483. is?

  484. It's a

  485. heart

  486. posture.

  487. What do you

  488. think mercy

  489. flows from?

  490. Oh,

  491. he has been

  492. talking about

  493. the heart

  494. all along

  495. here.

  496. He just

  497. gets explicit

  498. right now.

  499. But then,

  500. for the rest

  501. of the sermon,

  502. for the rest

  503. of the sermon

  504. on the mount,

  505. he pounds

  506. the heart.

  507. He goes

  508. after the

  509. internals.

  510. It's one

  511. big echo

  512. cardiogram of

  513. a sermon.

  514. God's

  515. God's

  516. God

  517. so much

  518. so

  519. that

  520. Jesus,

  521. God in

  522. the flesh,

  523. suffered

  524. God's

  525. wrath

  526. on the

  527. cross

  528. for you

  529. and then

  530. was raised

  531. from the

  532. dead

  533. to give

  534. you a

  535. new

  536. heart.

  537. Blessed

  538. are the

  539. pure in

  540. heart.

  541. Blessed

  542. are those

  543. who God's

  544. grace has

  545. fallen upon,

  546. whose the

  547. spirit has

  548. given new

  549. life,

  550. who've

  551. gone from

  552. being dead

  553. to alive.

  554. Blessed

  555. are the

  556. pure in

  557. heart.

  558. Your

  559. heart's

  560. important.

  561. You live

  562. out of your

  563. heart.

  564. Now let's

  565. talk about

  566. this word

  567. pure.

  568. Blessed

  569. are the

  570. pure in

  571. heart.

  572. What is

  573. this

  574. purity

  575. business?

  576. Well,

  577. at least

  578. implied,

  579. this

  580. purity

  581. that

  582. Jesus

  583. is

  584. talking

  585. about

  586. is not

  587. a

  588. self-generated

  589. purity.

  590. The purity

  591. that he's

  592. talking about

  593. here,

  594. it's a

  595. made

  596. alive

  597. purity.

  598. This is a

  599. purity in

  600. your heart

  601. that doesn't

  602. come from

  603. your wicked

  604. heart.

  605. This is a

  606. purity that

  607. comes from

  608. the God

  609. who's made

  610. you alive.

  611. life.

  612. There's no

  613. way human

  614. obedience and

  615. works can

  616. bring about

  617. a spiritual

  618. life that

  619. brings about

  620. a purity

  621. of heart

  622. to a

  623. heart that

  624. is dead

  625. and defiled

  626. and disordered.

  627. The purity

  628. first and

  629. foremost that

  630. you need to

  631. understand

  632. is a

  633. living

  634. purity.

  635. This is a

  636. spirit made

  637. alive purity.

  638. This is a

  639. born again

  640. John 3

  641. purity.

  642. Given a

  643. new heart,

  644. the spirit

  645. blows where

  646. he wishes.

  647. Not just

  648. that,

  649. it's a

  650. purity that

  651. has brought

  652. someone who's

  653. dead into

  654. spiritual life

  655. by the

  656. spirit of

  657. God.

  658. It is a

  659. washing

  660. clean by

  661. the blood

  662. of Jesus

  663. purity.

  664. It's a

  665. washing

  666. clean of

  667. the defilement

  668. that made

  669. us so

  670. grievous in

  671. God's sight.

  672. It's referred

  673. to in

  674. Ezekiel 36

  675. as that

  676. sprinkling

  677. clean.

  678. It's in

  679. Isaiah 1.8,

  680. come let us

  681. reason together

  682. so that your

  683. sins that are

  684. scarlet can be

  685. washed white as

  686. snow as

  687. wool.

  688. That's the

  689. cleaning we're

  690. talking about

  691. here.

  692. When the

  693. Bible talks

  694. about cleaning,

  695. purity,

  696. it's talking

  697. about forgiveness

  698. of your

  699. sins,

  700. of making

  701. you clean

  702. in God's

  703. sight.

  704. There's this

  705. great passage

  706. in Colossians.

  707. It uses a

  708. little different

  709. language,

  710. but you'll

  711. get it.

  712. In Colossians

  713. 2.13,

  714. we read

  715. this.

  716. And you,

  717. who were

  718. dead in

  719. your

  720. trespasses,

  721. in the

  722. uncircumcision

  723. of your

  724. flesh,

  725. God made

  726. alive together

  727. with him,

  728. having forgiven

  729. us all our

  730. trespasses.

  731. By canceling

  732. the record of

  733. debt that

  734. stood against

  735. us with its

  736. legal demands,

  737. this he set

  738. aside,

  739. nailing it to

  740. the cross.

  741. The forgiveness

  742. of sins is being

  743. talked about as a

  744. cancellation of

  745. debt in this

  746. context,

  747. but we can talk

  748. about it as being

  749. washed clean,

  750. by the blood of

  751. Jesus.

  752. It's another way,

  753. another description

  754. of it.

  755. There is a

  756. fountain filled

  757. with blood drawn

  758. from Emmanuel's

  759. veins, and

  760. sinners plunged

  761. beneath that

  762. flood lose all

  763. their guilty

  764. stains.

  765. This washed

  766. clean, this

  767. purity in

  768. heart is a

  769. cleansing that

  770. comes from the

  771. shed blood of

  772. Jesus on the

  773. cross, in

  774. which covering

  775. you, it's

  776. cleansed you.

  777. It happens at

  778. the moment you

  779. believe, at your

  780. conversion.

  781. There's this

  782. positional cleansing

  783. in which you've been

  784. forgiven of all of

  785. your sin, past,

  786. present, and future.

  787. It is a yes and

  788. amen.

  789. And then there is

  790. this ongoing need

  791. for cleansing,

  792. because even

  793. though the penalty

  794. of sin has been

  795. paid, the power of

  796. sin has been

  797. broken, the

  798. presence of sin

  799. remains, which

  800. means even though

  801. I've been made

  802. pure positionally, I'm

  803. going to continue to

  804. sin, and I'm going to

  805. continue to need to be

  806. forgiven, and I'm going

  807. to continue to need to

  808. be cleansed.

  809. And so when we read a

  810. passage like 1 John 1,

  811. 9, if we confess our

  812. sins, he is faithful and

  813. just to forgive our sins

  814. and to cleanse us from

  815. all unrighteousness.

  816. There is this, you

  817. have been made pure,

  818. you are being made

  819. pure, and you will be

  820. made pure, fully and

  821. finally and completely.

  822. It's going to happen at

  823. his appearing when you

  824. see him, 1 Corinthians

  825. 15.

  826. Your imperishable tent is

  827. going to get swallowed

  828. up by what is

  829. perishable.

  830. And at that moment, in

  831. the twinkling eye, and

  832. the blowing of the

  833. trumpet, you see him.

  834. And you're going to be

  835. made new all the way

  836. through.

  837. That wickedness in you,

  838. that idol maker in you,

  839. gone.

  840. All by the blood of

  841. Jesus.

  842. It's all the fruit of

  843. his cross work.

  844. His positional cleansing,

  845. his practical day-by-day

  846. cleansing, and then this

  847. promised full and forever

  848. cleansing that will come

  849. where he deals with the

  850. defilement of our sin.

  851. Hebrews 10, 14 says it

  852. this way, for by a single

  853. offering, he has perfected

  854. for all time those who are

  855. being sanctified.

  856. Or in the language we've

  857. been using, for by a single

  858. offering, by a single

  859. cleaning at the cross, he has

  860. purified for all time those

  861. who are being purified.

  862. But this purity is not just

  863. being made alive from the

  864. dead, it's not just simply

  865. being washed clean from

  866. defilement, it's having your

  867. loves rightly reordered.

  868. The effects of sin on our

  869. humans, on our hearts, is

  870. idolatrous.

  871. We would oftentimes rather

  872. worship at the altar of

  873. comfort than to live fully for

  874. our risen king.

  875. When you got flipped, when

  876. you were delivered from the

  877. domain of darkness and you

  878. were transferred into the

  879. kingdom of the beloved son,

  880. all by God's grace, a

  881. miraculous work, at that

  882. moment you got rightly

  883. reordered.

  884. Jesus became the controlling

  885. center of your life.

  886. He is the great one thing.

  887. He's the great first love.

  888. When Jesus comes to town and

  889. he claims you as your own, he

  890. is going to reorder your

  891. loves.

  892. In Matthew 22, a lawyer

  893. approaches Jesus.

  894. Can you hear?

  895. What's the greatest commandment

  896. in the law?

  897. Jesus responds.

  898. The first and greatest

  899. commandment is to love the

  900. Lord your God with all your

  901. heart, soul, mind, and

  902. strength.

  903. And the second is like it.

  904. To love your neighbor as

  905. yourself.

  906. These two great love

  907. commandments, all of the

  908. prophets hang on them.

  909. God's love.

  910. And it's for us a reordering

  911. of our loves.

  912. He is going to want to

  913. reorder in you on a daily

  914. basis a love for God first

  915. and foremost that controls

  916. everything, even your love

  917. for your neighbor.

  918. It's a reordering of our

  919. loves.

  920. You could say it this way.

  921. You were redeemed to live for

  922. the glory of God.

  923. And so if you're following me,

  924. this purity of heart is being

  925. made alive by the spirit,

  926. being washed clean by the blood

  927. of Jesus, and now you've been

  928. reordered, realigned to live for

  929. the glory of God.

  930. How about that for purity in

  931. heart?

  932. So what is purity in heart?

  933. Well, it's a heart that's been

  934. made alive by the spirit, washed

  935. clean by the blood of Jesus, and

  936. it's a person who is now living

  937. for the glory of God.

  938. Blessed, blessed are the pure in

  939. heart.

  940. It shows that they have been

  941. graced of God.

  942. It's at this point, though,

  943. I've got to let you know about

  944. something.

  945. The book of Matthew is very, the

  946. structure of the book is

  947. beautiful.

  948. Here are these eight beatitudes

  949. at the beginning of the book, and

  950. towards the end of the book, in

  951. Matthew 23, we have seven woes.

  952. Jesus speaking woe on the scribes

  953. and the Pharisees.

  954. They are the opposite of being

  955. pure in heart.

  956. They emphasize being clean on the

  957. outside, of having a righteousness

  958. that everybody can see.

  959. Let me just read to you what Jesus

  960. has to say to them in Matthew

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  961. chapter 23.

  962. This is verses 25 through 27.

  963. Jesus says this.

  964. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,

  965. hypocrites!

  966. For you clean the outside of the cup

  967. and the plate, but inside they are

  968. full of greed and self-indulgence.

  969. Those are heart products.

  970. You blind Pharisee, first clean the

  971. inside of the cup and plate, that the

  972. outside also may be clean.

  973. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,

  974. hypocrites!

  975. For you are like whitewashed tombs,

  976. which outwardly appear beautiful,

  977. but within are full of dead people's

  978. bones and all uncleanness.

  979. Cleanness!

  980. So you also outwardly appear

  981. righteous to others, but within you

  982. are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  983. Jesus is making a stark contrast

  984. between the blessed ones of his

  985. kingdom who are pure in heart,

  986. and not necessarily perfect in heart,

  987. but striving for purity,

  988. and these Pharisees, woe to them!

  989. They're under God's curse!

  990. They're not in the kingdom,

  991. because they're dead in their sin!

  992. They're defiled!

  993. They're disordered!

  994. It's a sober warning for us.

  995. And it gets at something that is

  996. essential to what it means to be

  997. pure in heart.

  998. Your heart is aimed at one thing.

  999. Jesus.

1000. Treasure Him above all else.

  1001. It's an undivided heart.

1002. A pure heart is a heart that has a

1003. singularity of purpose and focus.

1004. Treasuring Jesus above all else.

1005. Okay, I'm going to bring you now

  1006. in this echocardiogram.

1007. We're going to get some specific work

  1008. done.

1009. When Jesus speaks of being pure in heart,

1010. it applies to your anger.

  1011. In 521, Jesus says,

1012. You have heard that it was said,

  1013. to those of old,

  1014. you shall not murder,

  1015. and whoever murders

1016. will be liable to judgment.

1017. But I say to you,

1018. that everyone who is angry

  1019. with his brother

1020. will be liable to judgment.

  1021. Whoever insults his brother

1022. will be liable to the council.

  1023. And whoever says,

  1024. You fool,

1025. will be liable to the hell of fire.

  1026. Sinful anger

1027. is an impurity of heart

  1028. and must be confessed.

  1029. Lust.

1030. You've heard that it was said,

  1031. verse 27,

1032. you shall not commit adultery.

1033. But I say to you,

1034. that everyone who looks at a woman

  1035. with lustful intent

  1036. has already committed adultery

1037. with her in his heart.

  1038. It's not simply

  1039. not doing things externally.

  1040. It's what's going on

  1041. on the inside.

1042. Lust is an impurity of heart.

1043. He goes on to talk about

  1044. many other things.

  1045. One being hate.

  1046. Okay,

1047. we are in a contentious

  1048. political cycle.

  1049. Right?

  1050. Election for president.

  1051. Listen to this.

  1052. Verse 43,

1053. You've heard that it was said,

1054. You shall love your neighbor

  1055. and hate your enemy.

1056. But I say to you,

  1057. love your enemies,

  1058. even political enemies,

  1059. and pray for those

  1060. who persecute you.

  1061. Hatred towards others

1062. is an impurity of heart.

  1063. Needs to be confessed.

1064. He goes on to talk about greed.

1065. He goes on to talk about anxiety.

1066. He goes on to talk about

  1067. in chapter 27,

1068. that if you are judging

  1069. other people

1070. and not first taking the log

1071. out of your own eye,

1072. you are impure of heart.

  1073. Again and again,

  1074. this whole sermon

  1075. is one big echocardiogram

  1076. to not only expose,

  1077. for His Word

  1078. to expose us

1079. and the way to respond to this

1080. when you're seeing this stuff

  1081. in your heart,

  1082. which we all do,

  1083. is to say,

  1084. Oh Lord,

  1085. have mercy on me.

1086. Pour out Your grace on me.

  1087. Make me pure

  1088. as You are pure.

  1089. Purity of heart

  1090. we're talking about

1091. are those in the kingdom

  1092. who've been made pure

  1093. on one level,

  1094. but they're aware

  1095. of their impurity

  1096. on another,

  1097. and yet they're striving

1098. to be pure in heart

  1099. because they've been brought

  1100. into the kingdom.

  1101. It's all by God's grace.

1102. Now quickly to this promise.

1103. Blessed are the pure in heart

1104. for they shall see God.

  1105. This is talking about

  1106. when you will actually

1107. lay your eyes on God.

  1108. It's when,

  1109. what Paul talks about

  1110. when faith becomes sight.

1111. Right now we are looking at it

  1112. through a mirror dimly,

1113. but then we will see

  1114. face to face.

  1115. This seeing God

  1116. is this literal

  1117. when you will be

  1118. in His presence,

  1119. in His place,

1120. and you will see Him.

  1121. And the first time

  1122. you will see Him

  1123. is at His appearing.

  1124. And your Bible

1125. has much to say about that.

  1126. In Titus chapter 2,

    Titus 2:13

  1127. verse 13,

1128. waiting for our blessed hope,

1129. the appearing of the glory

  1130. of our God,

  1131. great God and Savior,

  1132. Jesus Christ,

  1133. 1 John 3, 2

  1134. speaks of His appearing

  1135. and the purifying effect

1136. it is to anticipate that.

1137. It speaks of in 1 Corinthians 15

  1138. all the way through

  1139. the return of Jesus,

  1140. and it has this

  1141. strengthening effect

1142. for those who are doing

1143. the work of the Lord.

1144. that you will see Him

  1145. with your own eyes.

  1146. This is a promise

  1147. for those of us

  1148. in the kingdom

1149. so that we keep on

  1150. pursuing purity of heart.

  1151. What's beautiful

  1152. about the promise,

1153. it has this kind of

  1154. anticipation of a future

  1155. seeing Him

1156. as a present purifying effect.

  1157. Longing for Him,

  1158. pursuing holiness,

  1159. persevering.

  1160. What does Jesus mean

1161. by being pure in heart?

  1162. Well,

  1163. He means that

1164. those blessed of the Lord,

1165. those who are in the kingdom

  1166. are made alive

1167. by the Spirit of God,

  1168. that they've been cleansed

1169. by the blood of Christ,

  1170. that they're living

1171. for the glory of God.

1172. They know they haven't arrived,

  1173. but they are continuing

  1174. to pursue greater degrees

  1175. of holiness and purity.

1176. And what does Jesus mean

1177. by we shall see God?

  1178. Well,

  1179. this promise is

1180. that we're one day closer

1181. to seeing Him face to face.

  1182. And the only way

1183. He can wipe a tear

  1184. from your face

1185. is if He's face to face.

  1186. So let me close

  1187. with just four questions

  1188. for you.

1189. We've come to the end

  1190. of the echocardiogram.

  1191. Does your heart

  1192. need Spirit reviving?

  1193. Has sin

  1194. deadened your heart?

  1195. Dulled your heart?

  1196. Distracted your heart?

  1197. Cry out.

  1198. Don't wait.

  1199. Spirit,

  1200. revive my heart

  1201. that I would want

  1202. Jesus.

  1203. Are you in need

  1204. of fresh cleansing

  1205. from the flood,

  1206. from the fountain,

  1207. from the blood

  1208. of Jesus?

  1209. Don't,

  1210. don't wait.

  1211. 1 John 1.9,

1212. if we confess our sins,

  1213. He's faithful and just

1214. to forgive us our sins

  1215. and to cleanse us

  1216. from all unrighteousness.

  1217. Is your life

  1218. out of order?

  1219. Are you putting

  1220. third things first

  1221. instead of

  1222. first things first?

  1223. Do you need

1224. to go to your King

  1225. and say,

  1226. oh, forgive me, Lord.

  1227. help me

  1228. to treasure you

  1229. above all else.

  1230. You are the controlling

  1231. center of my life.

  1232. And finally,

  1233. have you forgotten

  1234. that you're going

  1235. to see Him

  1236. face to face?

  1237. Maybe this afternoon.

  1238. Take some time out.

  1239. Pull out your Bible.

  1240. read Revelation 19,

  1241. 20, 21, and 22.

  1242. Pull out your Bible.

  1243. Read 1 Corinthians 15.

  1244. Pull out your Bible.

  1245. Read Matthew 24 and 25.

  1246. Where we're given

  1247. these sites of Him.

  1248. We're citizens

  1249. of the United States

  1250. in an election year.

  1251. But we're citizens

  1252. of the kingdom

  1253. forever.

  1254. So let's,

  1255. by God's grace,

  1256. strive

1257. to be pure in heart.

  1258. Amen?

  1259. God in heaven,

  1260. we are so grateful

  1261. that you address us

  1262. so lovingly.

  1263. It's out of love,

  1264. Jesus,

  1265. you speak these words.

1266. And it's out of love

  1267. for you

  1268. that we receive them

  1269. and we say,

  1270. oh, Lord,

  1271. thank you.

  1272. Would you purify

  1273. our hearts?

  1274. Would you

  1275. grow us

  1276. in Christ-likeness?

  1277. Lord Jesus,

  1278. we recognize you

  1279. as being

  1280. the purest

  1281. in heart

  1282. of all.

  1283. Thank you for dying

  1284. for us.

  1285. In Jesus' name

  1286. we pray.

  1287. Amen.

  1288. Amen.

  1289. God.

  1290. Thank you for

  1291. God.
