  1. And if you would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. we are looking at the last beatitude together this morning.

  3. But this isn't the last sermon from the Sermon on the Mount I'm going to preach.

  4. So I'm going to preach on blessed are the persecuted, those persecuted this morning.

  5. Next week, salt and light.

  6. The week after that, I'll get to preach on what Jesus means when he says,

  7. I came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.

  8. And that'll get us ready to go for Christmas time.

  9. If you're looking at Matthew chapter 5, let me read these beatitudes, page 962 of your Pew Bible.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  10. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain.

  11. And when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

  12. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  13. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  14. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

  15. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  16. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  17. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  18. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  19. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  20. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  21. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  22. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

  23. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.

  24. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  25. May God bless the reading and hearing of his word.

  26. Well, we've come to the end of the Beatitudes.

  27. I'm a little sad.

  28. And this last Beatitude, the eighth Beatitude, stands out.

  29. Because now what Jesus is talking about is not something that we are to be kind of an attitude in us towards God.

  30. What he's describing in this eighth Beatitude is a response to us.

  31. When we're living out the first seven Beatitudes, we can expect something in return.

  32. Persecution.

  33. If you are declaring spiritual bankruptcy on a regular basis, knowing that your debt, you can't pay it yet, but God's grace paid your debt.

  34. If you are mourning your sin and the sin of others, if you are seeking to grow in humility and meekness, if you're hungering, thirsting after a righteousness from within, a heart righteousness, a God-pleasing righteousness.

  35. If you're showing mercy, if you're striving to be pure in heart, even if you're making peace with others.

  36. You want the fullness of God's goodness experienced in your relationships.

  37. Do you know what's going to happen?

  38. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians puts it this way.

  39. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

  40. To one, a fragrance from death to death.

  41. To the other, a fragrance from life to life.

  42. Do you know what happens when you start living out the Beatitudes?

  43. You start to smell like Jesus.

  44. And for some, that fragrance of Christ is a delight.

  45. But for many others, it is repulsive.

  46. When you smell like Jesus, you will suffer like Jesus.

  47. So, expect to be reviled.

  48. Expect to be treated unfairly, harshly.

  49. Expect to be slandered.

  50. Because to be like Jesus is to suffer like Jesus.

  51. One would think that when you're living out the Beatitudes, that would be a welcome presence in a culture.

  52. Doesn't it make sense?

  53. Jesus is saying, no.

  54. Not always.

  55. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  56. So, if you're a Christian in the room and you're a follower of Jesus.

  57. And you're experiencing some heat for being a follower of Jesus.

  58. How are you responding to that?

  59. Are you experiencing some pushback for being a follower of Jesus?

  60. Jesus tells us that it's going to happen and he tells us how to respond.

  61. We live in a culture that is being handed over more and more to its sinful desires.

  62. It's a judgment of God.

  63. It's Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  64. And so, we can expect as followers of Jesus that resistance to us in our pursuit of the Lord is going to increase as our culture is handed over.

  65. Are you willing to endure hardship for Jesus?

  66. Here's what I want to convince you of this morning.

  67. Kingdom citizens suffer gladly for their king.

  68. Kingdom citizens suffer gladly for their king.

  69. And I'm going to make eight points.

  70. Sorry, you just felt persecuted.

  71. I'm going to make four points.

  72. The remaining beatitude.

  73. Our persecution.

  74. Let's just be clear about it.

  75. Point one.

  76. Point two.

  77. Our reason for our persecution.

  78. We've got to be clear about that.

  79. Point three.

  80. Our rejoicing in our persecution.

  81. And number four.

  82. Our response to our persecutors.

  83. Are you willing to suffer gladly for Jesus?

  84. Point number one.

  85. This remaining beatitude.

  86. Our persecution.

  87. Again, this is unique.

  88. The eighth beatitude is unique.

  89. Jesus is talking about there's going to be a kind of reception to us in a culture.

  90. And not only must we expect a certain kind of resistance, there's a way to respond to it.

  91. As I've been saying all along, all eight of these beatitudes, it's an eight point kind of character list.

  92. A profile of a kingdom citizen.

  93. Anyone who's been delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of the beloved son.

  94. These are to mark us in some measure.

  95. Whether that's just being avoided.

  96. Or that's martyrdom.

  97. Persecution.

  98. All the way across.

  99. Now there's some interesting features of this last beatitude.

  100. Let me point them out to you.

  101. First, it's the last of the list.

  102. Does anybody know what the last of the fruit of the spirit is?

  103. Self-control.

  104. Does anybody know who is the last named of all the disciples in the repeated list throughout the gospels?

  105. Judas Iscariot.

  106. They're in last position in order to emphasize them.

  107. So that this is showing up last, it's not a coincidence.

  108. It's not an afterthought.

  109. There's also something else going on here in the beatitude.

  110. It's called an inclusio.

  111. And so in Matthew 5.3, we read the poor.

  112. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  113. And then in 5.10, blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  114. And that phrase, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, it frames the entire beatitudes.

  115. It brings them to a close.

  116. It unites them all together.

  117. It's who we are and what we can expect of a kingdom citizen.

  118. But it communicates emphasis.

  119. There's another piece of this that I'm not sure if you're picking up on.

  120. It's a surprise.

  121. Blessed are the peacemakers.

  122. Blessed are those who are persecuted.

  123. Blessed are the peacemakers.

  124. Does that not shock you a little bit?

  125. Jesus, are you saying that as I purposely pursue the fullness of God's goodness in relationships with other people,

  126. I'm going to get heat for that?

  127. It's a little surprising.

  128. And that surprise carries emphasis.

  129. And then there's the expansion.

  130. Of all the eight beatitudes, it's only the eighth beatitude that Jesus expands on.

  131. In verses 11 and 12, he goes from 10, blessed are those who are persecuted, to 11, blessed are you when others revile you.

  132. He immediately applies it to the disciples listening to them.

  133. And he expands on it in order to explain it more fully.

  134. So this is what this means.

  135. It being the end of the list.

  136. It being a book end.

  137. It being a surprise.

  138. It being an expanded explanation.

  139. What this means is that when Jesus gave the beatitudes, it wasn't like he was walking up on the mountainside.

  140. And he said, oh, you know what, I need to just kind of drop in something about suffering.

  141. You know what, the eighth beatitude would work.

  142. No, no, this has been culminating.

  143. It's purposeful.

  144. It's intentional that Jesus has been holding this beatitude to the last.

  145. Here's what persecution is.

  146. It's suffering any kind of hostility.

  147. Whether it is an attitude, a word, or an action.

  148. Because of your relationship to Jesus.

  149. That's persecution.

  150. And it goes from being avoided to martyrdom.

  151. Suffering is any kind of hostility because of your relationship to Jesus.

  152. And so what that means is, what Jesus is talking about is suffering for his sake.

  153. Suffering because of Jesus.

  154. That this thing I am experiencing heat for, I would not experience if it weren't for Jesus in my life.

  155. Suffering.

  156. So the eighth beatitude isn't a last minute ad.

  157. Jesus jotted down when he's going to sit down on the mountain.

  158. He's intentionally placed it where it's at.

  159. And therefore, it carries weight.

  160. Paul says it this way in 2 Timothy 2.

  161. Anyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  162. If you smell like Jesus, you will suffer like Jesus.

  163. If you're a Christian, that should help with your expectations a little bit.

  164. Don't be surprised when you get pushed back.

  165. And if you're a non-Christian in the room, thinking about becoming a follower of Jesus,

  166. you can't have it both ways.

  167. Jesus says in John 15, 18,

  168. The world hated me.

  169. It will also hate you.

  170. A servant is not greater than their master.

  171. So, this remaining beatitude is about our persecution.

  172. Blessed are those persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  173. To be a kingdom citizen means that you will suffer gladly for the king.

  174. The second reason is that our...

  175. The second point is our reason for our persecution.

  176. There's a really interesting relationship between verse 10 and verses 11 and 12.

  177. It's this expansion.

  178. Let me help you to see it.

  179. In verse 10,

  180. Blessed are those who are persecuted.

  181. And then in verse 11,

  182. Blessed are you when others' expansion revile you.

  183. That's you being insulted to your face or behind your back.

  184. And persecuted.

  185. You're treated harshly, unfairly.

  186. You're looked over at work because you're committed to doing things right.

  187. For Jesus' sake.

  188. They utter all kinds of evil against you falsely.

  189. That is slander.

  190. And so, Jesus expands what he says in verse 10 and verse 11.

  191. But there's also what's called a parallel.

  192. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  193. And then in verse 11.

  194. Blessed are you when others revile you, persecute you, utter all kinds of evil on my account.

  195. What Jesus is doing is saying, you're being persecuted for righteousness' sake is the same thing as you being suffering on my account.

  196. But his understanding of righteousness is also kind of like dealing with being connected to him.

  197. And so, the righteousness that he's talking about is not the external righteousness of the Pharisees.

  198. It's not the man-pleasing righteousness.

  199. Look at me of the Pharisees.

  200. It's not the pride-fueling righteousness of the Pharisees.

  201. It's not that righteousness.

  202. This is a righteousness that's internal of the heart.

  203. This is a righteousness that is God-pleasing.

  204. Jesus says later in the Sermon on the Mount, if you fast, do so in secret so that your Father in heaven will see and know.

  205. That's the kind of righteousness he's talking about.

  206. And it generates humility.

  207. This righteousness is the result of the new covenant.

  208. This is a righteousness born of the Spirit resulting from Christ's death and resurrection.

  209. This is a righteousness from God.

  210. So, if you're suffering hardship, let's just be clear.

  211. If you're suffering hardship as a consequence to your bad behavior, that's not suffering for Jesus.

  212. That's just dealing with the consequences of bad behavior.

  213. Don't try to over-spiritualize something.

  214. Or, if you are suffering hostility because of your race, or your gender, or your income, or education, or the neighborhood you live in.

  215. That hostility is wrong.

  216. But is it for Jesus?

  217. If you are being ridiculed for your political commitments, as long as other non-Christians are able to suffer with you as well,

  218. likely it's not for Jesus' sake.

  219. Our reason for our persecution that Jesus is talking about is wrapped up in three words.

  220. On my account.

  221. If you are slandered because you're holding to a biblical sexual ethic, because you're a follower of Jesus,

  222. you're like, no, I'm sorry, I cannot agree with that position on homosexual marriage,

  223. because I'm a follower of Jesus, and you catch heat for that?

  224. On my account.

  225. If you are catching flack for saying no to people, no, I don't believe that there are many ways to get to heaven.

  226. Because I'm a follower of Jesus, there is only one way.

  227. There's only one name given among men by which they can be saved, and that's the name of Jesus.

  228. Salvation is found in no one else.

  229. And if you catch heat for that, on my account.

  230. If you are being avoided, you walk into a room and people are talking,

  231. they see you, and the conversation changes because you're a Christian.

  232. You're being looked over at work.

  233. You're being gossiped about because you won't lie, you won't cheat, you won't steal.

  234. Because you're a follower of Jesus, on my account.

  235. We've got to be clear that Jesus is the reason for our being persecuted.

  236. And when you start to smell like Jesus in your character and your conduct,

  237. for some, they'll be like, oh, that smells good.

  238. For others, they will be repulsed.

  239. Kingdom citizens suffer gladly for their king.

  240. He's the reason for our persecution.

  241. Third point, our rejoicing in our persecution.

  242. This is verse 12.

  243. Jesus makes two things clear in this beatitude and expansion.

  244. It's that we will suffer for him.

  245. And then secondly, when we suffer for him,

  246. we are to rejoice and be glad.

  247. He says, rejoice and be glad.

  248. When you're getting mistreated for Jesus,

  249. do you know what time it is?

  250. It's praise and worship time.

  251. When you're catching heat or see a brother or sister catching heat for Jesus,

  252. they're just trying to be faithful to him.

  253. Do you know what time it is for them?

  254. It's praise and worship time.

  255. In Acts 16, there is this incredible story.

  256. Paul and Silas are preaching Christ in Philippi.

  257. They're going around proclaiming Jesus,

  258. and there is this demon-possessed slave girl who's following them around.

  259. And she keeps on making this announcement.

  260. This is what she's saying repeatedly for days.

  261. She's saying,

  262. These men are servants of the most high God who proclaim to you the way of salvation.

  263. So Paul is just trying to preach Christ,

  264. and there is this slave girl who's demon-possessed announcing this again and again and again.

  265. By the way, she's also a huge moneymaker for her masters.

  266. She's also a fortune teller.

  267. And so she is bringing in all sorts of cash for her masters.

  268. Well, finally, Paul can't take it anymore.

  269. So he rebukes the spirit in her.

  270. The spirit departs immediately and dries up the master's revenue stream.

  271. Do you know what happens next?

  272. Those masters don't become Christians.

  273. They grab Paul and Silas and drag them into the marketplace.

  274. They bring them before the rulers.

  275. They set up a mock little court.

  276. They strip them and start beating them with rods.

  277. And they just push it through.

  278. They say to a Philippian jailer,

  279. Hey, lock them up.

  280. Bring them into the inner cell.

  281. And when they brought into the inner cell,

  282. after being beaten and humiliated,

  283. some miscarriage of justice,

  284. they're shackled with their feet,

  285. put in bonds.

  286. And in verse 25,

  287. we read this of chapter 16.

  288. It's praise and worship time.

  289. About midnight,

  290. Paul and Silas were praying

  291. and singing hymns

  292. to God.

  293. And the prisoners were listening to them.

  294. Could you imagine?

  295. Paul on his back,

  296. feet,

  297. ankles,

  298. shackled in.

  299. Silas,

  300. join me.

  301. How great thou art.

  302. Come on,

  303. Silas.

  304. How great thou art.

  305. How does that happen?

  306. How does that happen

  307. when you have been beaten,

  308. humiliated,

  309. a miscarriage of justice,

  310. thrown in jail,

  311. have your feet locked before you,

  312. and you are in a praise and worship session?

  313. How does that happen,

  314. church?

  315. How can you respond that way?

  316. When you get wind of the gossip,

  317. when you sense people are avoiding you,

  318. when certain topics don't come up,

  319. how do you go the way of Paul and Silas

  320. and make that a praise and worship moment?

  321. Well,

  322. let me give you three reasons real quick.

  323. First reason is this.

  324. It's implied in our text.

  325. On my account.

  326. In Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3:8

  327. verse 8,

  328. Paul,

  329. while he's in prison,

  330. writes this.

  331. Indeed,

  332. I count everything as loss

  333. because of the surpassing worth

  334. of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  335. Indeed,

  336. I count everything as loss

  337. because of the surpassing worth

  338. of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  339. For his sake,

  340. I have suffered the loss of all things

  341. and count them as rubbish

  342. in order that I may gain Christ

  343. and be found in him,

  344. not having a righteousness of my own

  345. that comes from the law,

  346. but that which comes through faith in Christ,

  347. the righteousness from God

  348. that depends on faith.

  349. You see,

  350. Paul's joy and glory

  351. in the midst of his suffering

  352. is the glorious Christ.

  353. How is Paul,

  354. how are they doing this?

  355. Because they are treasuring Jesus

  356. above all else.

  357. He and Silas know

  358. that this one

  359. in whom they're suffering for,

  360. that salvation is found

  361. in no one else,

  362. that only through Christ

  363. could they have

  364. their unrighteousness forgiven

  365. and the righteousness of Christ

  366. imputed to them

  367. and made acceptable God.

  368. That's it.

  369. They are worshiping.

  370. He's worth it.

  371. And that should put courage

  372. in your heart.

  373. That should be the stuff

  374. that makes you want to praise

  375. and worship.

  376. But there's two other reasons

  377. from this text

  378. that are explicit

  379. that I want you to point out

  380. and see.

  381. Rejoice and be glad

  382. for your reward

  383. is great in heaven.

  384. Jesus is saying,

  385. hey,

  386. when you suffer for me,

  387. rejoice and be glad

  388. for great is your reward

  389. in heaven.

  390. Notice,

  391. it's in heaven,

  392. not on earth.

  393. It's not here and now,

  394. it's then and there.

  395. You might be asking,

  396. well,

  397. what is this reward?

  398. Is it,

  399. are we talking

  400. mansions in glory

  401. with like different amounts

  402. of rooms in them

  403. and those who suffer more

  404. get more rooms

  405. and things like that?

  406. Well,

  407. I'm not sure.

  408. But what I can point you to

  409. is a couple other passages

  410. that may be helpful.

  411. in Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  412. the hall of faith,

  413. the writer of Hebrews says,

  414. these,

  415. these faithful ones,

  416. all died in faith,

  417. not having received

  418. the things promised,

  419. but having seen them

  420. and greeted them from afar

  421. and having acknowledged

  422. that they were strangers

  423. and exiles on the earth.

  424. For people who speak thus,

  425. make it clear

  426. that they are seeking

  427. a homeland.

  428. If they had been thinking

  429. of that land

  430. from which they had gone out,

  431. they would have had

  432. the opportunity to return,

  433. but as it is,

  434. they desire a better country

  435. that is a heavenly one.

  436. Therefore,

  437. God is not ashamed

  438. to be called their God,

  439. for he has prepared

  440. for them a city.

  441. Could it be

  442. that the great reward

  443. that Jesus is talking about

  444. is heaven?

  445. Our heavenly homeland?

  446. where we go home?

  447. Or maybe,

  448. Revelation chapter 6,

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  449. the lamb is given a scroll

  450. with seven seals,

  451. and he breaks each seal

  452. one at a time.

  453. And when he comes

  454. to the fifth seal,

  455. we are given this scene

  456. in the heavenly throne room

  457. of God.

  458. And you know

  459. what the scene is of?

  460. martyrs under the altar.

  461. Those who have been

  462. persecuted ultimately.

  463. They've given their life

  464. in the proclamation

  465. of Christ.

  466. And you know

  467. what they're saying?

  468. They are saying,

  469. how long,

  470. O Lord,

  471. until you give us vengeance?

  472. But you know

  473. what I want you to see?

  474. Proximity.

  475. Where they're at.

  476. They're under the altar

  477. next to the throne.

  478. Do you know what that means?

  479. They've got great seats.

  480. They're close.

  481. Could it be the great reward

  482. is not just heaven,

  483. but it's proximity

  484. to Jesus in glory?

  485. All of us

  486. who will be in glory

  487. will have no qualms

  488. that they were there,

  489. no matter where you're at.

  490. But it seems that there are

  491. special places

  492. for those who suffer

  493. severely for Christ.

  494. There's a great reward.

  495. It's proximity.

  496. It's heaven.

  497. And she could encourage you.

  498. When you're suffering for Jesus,

  499. we get to say to one another,

  500. your heavenly homeland's coming.

  501. This is light and momentary.

  502. But there's one other thing

  503. I want you to see.

  504. It's good company.

  505. For so they persecuted

  506. the prophets

  507. who were before you.

  508. Just think about it.

  509. Moses,

  510. Isaiah,

  511. Jeremiah,

  512. Ezekiel,

  513. they all suffered.

  514. and they all suffered

  515. proclaiming the Christ to come

  516. on my account.

  517. When we get later

  518. into Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  519. we read this.

  520. Verse 32.

  521. And what more shall I say?

  522. For Timewood family

  523. to tell of Gideon,

  524. Barak, Samson,

  525. Jephthah,

  526. and David,

  527. and Samuel,

  528. and the prophets.

  529. Some were tortured,

  530. refusing to accept

  531. released,

  532. so they might rise again

  533. to a better life.

  534. Others suffered mocking

  535. and flogging

  536. and even chains

  537. and imprisonment.

  538. They were stoned.

  539. They were sawn unto,

  540. a reference to Isaiah.

  541. They were killed

  542. with the sword.

  543. They went about

  544. in skins of sheep

  545. and goats,

  546. destitute,

  547. afflicted, mistreated,

  548. of whom the world

  549. was not worthy,

  550. wandering about

  551. in deserts and mountains

  552. and in dens

  553. and caves

  554. of the earth.

  555. This is the great

  556. cloud of witnesses

  557. of 12.1.

  558. Therefore,

  559. since we're surrounded

  560. by so great a cloud

  561. of witnesses,

  562. we've got good company,

  563. gang.

  564. When we suffer for Jesus,

  565. we're in good company.

  566. Let us also lay aside

  567. every weight in sin

  568. which clings so closely

  569. and let us run

  570. with endurance

  571. the race that is set

  572. before us,

  573. looking to Jesus,

  574. the ultimate example

  575. of suffering,

  576. our greatest companion

  577. of the good company,

  578. the one speaking this.

  579. You know what we get

  580. to say to one another

  581. when we are living

  582. in close proximity

  583. to each other

  584. and we see each other

  585. catching heat

  586. for trying to be faithful

  587. to Jesus?

  588. We get to say,

  589. the glorious Christ

  590. is worth it.

  591. There's a great reward

  592. coming.

  593. Wait on it!

  594. And you're in good company.

  595. So went the prophets

  596. proclaiming Christ.

  597. He should encourage

  598. your heart

  599. and fuel this rejoicing

  600. and being glad

  601. when you catch pushback

  602. for Jesus,

  603. when you're living out

  604. the Beatitudes,

  605. when you're smelling

  606. like Jesus,

  607. you're going to suffer

  608. like Jesus.

  609. Kingdom citizens

  610. suffer gladly

  611. for their king.

  612. Rejoice and be glad.

  613. But how do we respond

  614. to our persecutors?

  615. How do we respond

  616. to the people

  617. that are gossiping

  618. about us

  619. and slandering us

  620. and looking over us?

  621. How do we do that?

  622. Because I don't know

  623. about you,

  624. you're going to face

  625. one of two temptations.

  626. Temptation number one

  627. is just to put your tail

  628. between your legs

  629. and shrink back

  630. in silence.

  631. That's not of God.

  632. The other response

  633. is,

  634. you're going to take

  635. a shot at me?

  636. Here comes the shot

  637. back.

  638. You're going to

  639. persecute me?

  640. I'm coming back

  641. with persecution.

  642. You hit me

  643. and hurt me,

  644. I hit and hurt you

  645. back.

  646. That's not an option

  647. either.

  648. Because kingdom citizens

  649. operate by the king's

  650. code.

  651. In Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  652. Sermon on the Mount,

  653. in verses 43 and 48,

  654. you've got to hear

  655. what your king

  656. tells you to do

  657. when you suffer for him.

  658. Here's what he says.

  659. You've heard that

  660. it was said,

  661. you shall love your neighbor

  662. and hate your enemy.

  663. But I say to you,

  664. love your enemies

  665. and pray for those

  666. who persecute you.

  667. so that you may be

  668. sons of your father

  669. who is in heaven.

  670. For he makes his son

  671. rise on the evil

  672. and the good

  673. and sends rain

  674. on just

  675. and on the unjust.

  676. For if you love

  677. those who love you,

  678. what reward do you have?

  679. Do not even the tax

  680. collectors do the same?

  681. And if you greet

  682. only your brothers,

  683. what more are you doing

  684. than others?

  685. Do not even the Gentiles

  686. do the same?

  687. You therefore

  688. must be perfect

  689. as your heavenly father

  690. is perfect.

  691. And you know

  692. what that is?

  693. Loving your neighbor

  694. for God so loved

  695. the world

  696. who were railing

  697. against him

  698. that he gave

  699. his only begotten son.

  700. When we

  701. are suffering

  702. hardship for Jesus

  703. from other people,

  704. we pray for them.

  705. Do you know

  706. how difficult

  707. it is to keep

  708. a hard heart

  709. towards someone

  710. you're praying for?

  711. Do you know

  712. how hard that is?

  713. when you start

  714. praying for someone

  715. who's persecuting you,

  716. you're going to start

  717. kind of realizing

  718. what they're operating

  719. out of.

  720. And you're going to be like,

  721. oh Lord,

  722. I don't know

  723. where this spite

  724. is coming from,

  725. but God,

  726. it must grieve you.

  727. Oh God,

  728. deliver them

  729. from their hate.

  730. God,

  731. change their hearts,

  732. open their hearts

  733. to the gospel.

  734. We pray for those

  735. who persecute us.

  736. another passage

  737. if you want to look at

  738. is 1 Peter 3,

  739. 8 through 17.

  740. We suffer

  741. for Christ

  742. not only

  743. to make it

  744. a praise and worship time,

  745. because it is.

  746. We also

  747. bless

  748. those who curse us.

  749. Luke 6,

  750. the sermon

  751. on the plain.

  752. we are

  753. to respond

  754. like Jesus

  755. to those

  756. who are

  757. persecuting us

  758. because of Jesus.

  759. We smell

  760. like Jesus,

  761. we suffer

  762. like Jesus,

  763. and then we respond

  764. to them

  765. like Jesus.

  766. Do you see that?

  767. That's his way.

  768. I don't know

  769. about you,

  770. but that sounds

  771. extraordinary to me.

  772. Verging on impossible.

  773. How does that happen?

  774. Well,

  775. if you're declaring

  776. spiritual bankruptcy,

  777. and you've got

  778. all of your eggs

  779. in the basket

  780. of God's grace

  781. to make you right

  782. in God's eyes,

  783. if you're mourning

  784. your sin

  785. and you're lamenting

  786. those people

  787. who are even

  788. sinfully

  789. persecuting you,

  790. if you're growing

  791. in your humility

  792. before God

  793. that you're seeing

  794. yourself as He sees you

  795. and relating to Him

  796. accordingly,

  797. if you're hungering

  798. and thirsting

  799. for this righteousness

  800. of heart

  801. by God's grace

  802. that is seeking

  803. to please God

  804. above all else,

  805. and that you're seeking

  806. to show mercy

  807. as you've been shown mercy,

  808. and to have a purity

  809. of heart

  810. to all people

  811. and to be peacemaking

  812. with them,

  813. you're going to be positioned

  814. that when you are

  815. persecuted,

  816. it is praise

  817. and worship time,

  818. and you will bless

  819. those who curse you.

  820. Our response

  821. to those who

  822. persecute us

  823. is to suffer

  824. gladly for our King.

  825. Blessing

  826. those who

  827. would do us

  828. harm.

  829. The remaining

  830. beatitude

  831. is our persecution.

  832. It's emphatic.

  833. The reason

  834. for our persecution,

  835. three words

  836. on my account.

  837. Our rejoicing

  838. in our persecution

  839. comes from

  840. the glorious Christ

  841. treasuring Him

  842. above all else.

  843. It comes from

  844. knowing that

  845. our great reward

  846. is coming,

  847. knowing that we

  848. are suffering

  849. with good company.

  850. That's the stuff

  851. by which we rejoice

  852. from.

  853. And our response

  854. to our persecutors

  855. who look to

  856. injure us

  857. because we smell

  858. like Jesus

  859. and suffer

  860. like Jesus

  861. is to bless

  862. them

  863. like Jesus.

  864. So if you're

  865. a Christian,

  866. are you surprised

  867. that you're suffering

  868. for Him?

  869. You shouldn't be.

  870. Jesus called it.

  871. Are you responding

  872. with rejoicing

  873. and gladness

  874. just like Paul

  875. and Silas did

  876. in the Philippian jail?

  877. Are you ready?

  878. Do you know

  879. how to prepare yourself

  880. for the persecution

  881. that surely is to come?

  882. You treasure Jesus

  883. above all else.

  884. You savor Him.

  885. You delight in Him.

  886. You think often

  887. with joy

  888. what He's done

  889. for you.

  890. And it's a joy

  891. to suffer for Him.

  892. And if you're

  893. not a Christian,

  894. you need to realize

  895. that if you were

  896. to become a follower

  897. of Jesus,

  898. you are going

  899. to be hated

  900. for Jesus.

  901. You will suffer

  902. for Him.

  903. But He is

  904. so worth it

  905. the one,

  906. the God-man

  907. who suffered

  908. God's wrath

  909. in our place,

  910. who's given us

  911. in eternity

  912. with Him

  913. as a promise,

  914. oh, it's a joy

  915. to suffer for Him.

  916. He's worth it.

  917. And what we suffer now

  918. is just light

  919. and momentary.

  920. with the way

  921. our culture is going,

  922. we're going

  923. to experience

  924. greater degrees

  925. of difficulty

  926. and hardship

  927. from others.

  928. Not everybody,

  929. but it's going

  930. to be a blessing.

  931. Do you know why?

  932. Our persecution

  933. is proof positive

  934. that we are

  935. kingdom citizens

  936. living for our King,

  937. joyfully suffering

  938. for Him.

  939. He's worth it.

  940. Great reward.

  941. Good company.

  942. Let's pray.

  943. God in heaven,

  944. if You would grant us

  945. to suffer for You,

  946. we will.

  947. And we will together.

  948. together,

  949. we hear these words

  950. that You're speaking,

  951. Jesus,

  952. and don't dismiss them.

  953. We know,

  954. we've tasted,

  955. we've felt the heat,

  956. and we gladly say together

  957. that You are worth it.

  958. In Your name we pray.

  959. Amen.

  960. Amen.

  961. Amen.

  962. Amen.

  963. Amen.

  964. Amen.

  965. Amen.

  966. Amen.

  967. Amen.

  968. Amen.

  969. Amen.

  970. Amen.

  971. Amen.

  972. Amen.

  973. Amen.

  974. Amen.

  975. Amen.

  976. Amen.

  977. Amen.

  978. Amen.

  979. Amen.

  980. Amen.
