  1. If you would open up your Bibles to Matthew, chapter 5, this is our last installment for

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. our fall series on the Beatitudes.

  3. So during the fall, we've been focusing on one Beatitude at a time in Matthew 5, and

  4. then we're lingering a little longer, and so last week we were in the salt and light,

  5. and today we are in Jesus talking about His relationship to the Old Testament.

  6. It is extraordinary.

  7. And so on page 963 of your pew Bible, or in Matthew 5, 17 through 20, let's hear what

  8. our King has to say.

  9. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or prophets.

  10. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  11. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot will pass

  12. from the law until all is accomplished.

  13. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of these least of these commandments and teaches others to

  14. do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

  15. But whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  16. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  17. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  18. May God bless the hearing of His word.

  19. There is a terrible epidemic in the United States.

  20. This is me being dramatic.

  21. Terrible epidemic.

  22. Where do you put your old tech?

  23. Where does it go?

  24. We have drawers in the Salvati household with old phones and external disk drives, old laptops,

  25. even a camcorder or two.

  26. What?

  27. This old tech is out of date.

  28. It's irrelevant and useless.

  29. And so we put it in drawers and shelves, out of sight, out of mind.

  30. I don't know what to do with them.

  31. Do you?

  32. Some people, when it comes to the Old Testament, the 39 books starting in Genesis, ending in Malachi,

  33. the Law, the Prophets, the Psalms, some people, they think the Old Testament's like old tech.

  34. It's out of date, irrelevant, and useless.

  35. The question is, what does Jesus think about the Old Testament?

  36. And how do we, His kingdom citizens, how do we take on the same mindset of Jesus towards the Old Testament?

  37. We must think about the Old Testament the way that our interpreter-in-chief, our forever king,

  38. has told us to understand the Old Testament.

  39. So just exactly how are we supposed to understand it?

  40. Well, Jesus is going to say something extraordinary.

  41. Maybe you've already picked up on it when I was reading it.

  42. Far from being out of date, irrelevant, and useless,

  43. Jesus is going to say something like,

  44. the Old Testament actually points to me.

  45. And Jesus is never outdated.

  46. He's never irrelevant.

  47. He's never useless.

  48. Quite the contrary.

  49. Amen.

  50. So here's how I want you to walk away from this morning.

  51. Here's the point.

  52. We need to understand the Old Testament the way that Jesus teaches us to understand the Old Testament.

  53. We need to be interpreters of the Old Testament as Jesus interpreted the Old Testament,

  54. which is essentially about Him.

  55. It's an extraordinary claim.

  56. And so in order to help you this morning,

  57. I'm going to ask and answer five questions about this passage.

  58. And Lord willing, you're going to walk away with a clearer sense of what the Old Testament is accomplishing.

  59. So question number one.

  60. Generally speaking, what did Jesus think about the Old Testament?

  61. What did Jesus think about the Old Testament?

  62. Well, He mentions the law and the prophets here in verse 17.

  63. But if you flip back to the end, towards the end of the Sermon on the Mount in 7.12,

  64. you know this as the golden rule.

  65. He says,

  66. So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.

  67. For this is the law and the prophets.

  68. So whatever Jesus thinks about the Old Testament, the law and the prophets,

  69. He has a high view of it.

  70. If you turn all the way back towards the end of Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  71. In Matthew chapter 22, verses 34 through 40, which I know is elder Steve Bickle's, one of his favorite passages.

    Matthew 22:34–40

  72. Amen.

  73. Jesus gets peppered with questions by a lawyer.

  74. Teacher, verse 36,

  75. Which is the great commandment in the law?

  76. Jesus said to them,

  77. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  78. This is the great first commandment, and the second is like it.

  79. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  80. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  81. Jesus has a high view of the Old Testament.

  82. In our passage, verse 18, we see some other truths about how Jesus viewed the Old Testament.

  83. He sees it as enduring.

  84. He says,

  85. As long as there's a heaven, as long as there's an earth, there's going to be the Old Testament.

  86. It's got a really long shelf life.

  87. The other truth that he points to is that he gets at the extent of it.

  88. There's maybe a view of the Old Testament as,

  89. Yeah, generally speaking, that's from God in kind of big picture kind of ways.

  90. But did you see what Jesus said?

  91. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot.

  92. The most minute details of the Old Testament.

  93. Not an iota, not a dot.

  94. We'll pass from the law until all is accomplished.

  95. The iota and the dot are referring to the smallest strokes of the Hebrew letters in the Old Testament.

  96. The vowel pointing.

  97. The slightest stroke that distinguished one Hebrew letter from the next.

  98. It would be kind of like the hook on the English lowercase j that separates it from an i.

  99. What Jesus is saying is it's all from God.

  100. Not just in its enduring nature.

  101. Not just in its detail.

  102. But it's seeking to accomplish something.

  103. Before we talk about this little phrase, until it's all accomplished,

  104. would you just turn to your right in your New Testament to 2 Timothy 3.16?

  105. The Apostle Paul, scholars believe, made up a word to get at the very nature of the Old Testament.

  106. Paul says, all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable.

  107. The Old Scripture, all Scripture he's referring to is all the Old Testament.

  108. And that English phrase, breathed out by God, is one word in the original language.

  109. And what it's getting at is the God-originating nature of every word in the Old Testament.

  110. And what Paul is saying is simply kind of capturing what Jesus believed about the Old Testament.

  111. Every word has come from the mouth of God.

  112. Of the Old Testament.

  113. Every word.

  114. Every word.

  115. That's what makes it enduring.

  116. That's why down to the most smallest details, it's going to endure.

  117. And it's going to accomplish something.

  118. Until all is accomplished.

  119. It reveals there's a plan.

  120. You don't talk about something being accomplished unless something is seeking to get something done.

  121. There's a plan.

  122. There's a purpose.

  123. And we actually, in the verse before 2 Timothy 3.16, we get at the plan.

  124. Paul talks about it this way.

  125. But as for you, verse 14.

  126. This is 2 Timothy 3.14 and 15.

  127. But as for you, continuing what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it,

  128. and how from childhood you've been acquainted with the sacred writings, the Old Testament,

  129. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  130. Until it's all accomplished.

  131. The Old Testament is revealing God's plan for the fullness of time for all people everywhere to have a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

  132. And that is going to culminate in a moment where Jesus comes back and he makes all wrongs right.

  133. And he judges the world, separating them like sheep and the goats.

  134. And at that moment, God will have gathered all of his people from all of time to sing his praises.

  135. Jesus, this plan that he's seeking to accomplish is a big plan and it's a glory plan.

  136. And Jesus is saying that plan is made known in the Old Testament.

  137. Jesus has a very high view of the Old Testament.

  138. Because he believes it's God speaking.

  139. In fact, you can make an argument that Jesus, the second person of the Trinity,

  140. was actually there when the Old Testament was given.

  141. It's enduring down to the details.

  142. It reveals a plan that is going to find its culmination in Jesus.

  143. That's a high view of the Old Testament.

  144. How does Jesus view the Old Testament, generally speaking?

  145. Very highly.

  146. Second question.

  147. How did Jesus view his relationship to the Old Testament specifically?

  148. Specifically, there's this word fulfill.

  149. In chapter 17, we read,

  150. I have not come to abolish them, the law or the prophets,

  151. but to fulfill them.

  152. In other words, Jesus didn't come to relax the law or reduce the law or to remove the law.

  153. He came to fulfill the law and the prophets and the Psalms, all of the Old Testament.

  154. He came to fulfill it.

  155. So the question becomes, how does Jesus fulfill the Old Testament?

  156. What does that mean?

  157. What does that look like?

  158. And I get to tell you this morning, he fulfills it in more than one way.

  159. The first way that you think of, generally, that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament is through Old Testament predictive prophecy.

  160. Like, if you flip back to Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14,

    Isaiah 7:14

  161. I mean, we're getting ready for the Advent season.

  162. We read this by Isaiah,

  163. And then we look at Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1:20–23

  164. verses 20 through 23,

  165. and we learn this,

  166. That's just one prophecy, predictive prophecy.

  167. From a prophet.

  168. Do you guys know the first predictive prophecy of the coming of Jesus?

  169. Genesis 3.15.

  170. It's actually a curse on the serpent.

  171. There's going to be a descendant of Eve that's going to crush his head.

  172. So there's this predictive prophecy in both the law and the prophets of the Old Testament,

  173. but that's just one way.

  174. There's another way that Jesus fulfills the Old Testament,

  175. and it's by way of themes,

  176. or what some people call typology.

  177. It's like this.

  178. In the Old Testament,

  179. you have this sacrificial system established,

  180. where there is sinning by God's people,

  181. and then they've got a sacrifice.

  182. Blood must be shed to atone for the sin,

  183. and it happens over and over and over again.

  184. It happens all the way through the Old Testament,

  185. and when you get to the New Testament,

  186. in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  187. when John sees Jesus,

  188. do you remember what he says?

  189. Behold, the Lamb of God,

  190. who comes to take away the sin of the world.

  191. The greatest sacrifice.

  192. Hebrews 10 talks about Jesus being the once-for-all sacrifice.

  193. There's no more need for the blood of goats and bulls,

  194. because Jesus has died once and for all.

  195. So there we have a theme,

  196. a kind of typology being kind of fulfilled in Jesus,

  197. and we have that with kingship,

  198. we have that with the priesthood,

  199. we have that with the temple,

  200. we have that with places.

  201. It is all throughout your Old Testament

  202. being fulfilled by Jesus in the New.

  203. And then there's the moral fulfillment of Jesus,

  204. of the Old Testament.

  205. I'm guessing if I said,

  206. hey, can you rattle off the Ten Commandments,

  207. you'd be able to like, yeah, six of them.

  208. And then if I ask, hey, of those six,

  209. have you been obeying all of them today?

  210. You're like, well,

  211. two of them.

  212. Check it out.

  213. Jesus lived 33 years.

  214. Let's just take the Ten Commandments.

  215. Every day, every week, of every month, of every year,

  216. he perfectly obeyed,

  217. both in behavior and in emotion,

  218. heart intent,

  219. all of the Ten Commandments,

  220. every day of his life for 33 years.

  221. And that's just ten of the commandments.

  222. I have a hard time obeying one every day.

  223. Jesus was morally perfect

  224. when it comes to the commands

  225. of the Old Testament law.

  226. He obeyed them,

  227. and we couldn't.

  228. He was the righteous one.

  229. It's 1 Peter 3.18,

  230. who gave his life for the unrighteous.

  231. And then,

  232. there's this other fulfillment

  233. that I'm calling

  234. gospel fulfillment.

  235. At the end of Luke,

  236. if you want to turn there,

  237. Luke 24,

  238. it's on page 1052 of your pew Bible,

  239. Jesus has risen from the dead.

  240. And he now is appearing

  241. to his disciples.

  242. And he shows up

  243. with two of his disciples

  244. on the road to Emmaus.

  245. And this conversation ensues,

  246. and then Jesus says this

  247. in verse 25 through 27,

  248. O foolish ones,

  249. slow of heart to believe

  250. all that the prophets have spoken.

  251. Was it not necessary

  252. that the Christ should suffer

  253. for these things,

  254. a reference to his death,

  255. and enter into his glory,

  256. a reference to his resurrection?

  257. And beginning with Moses

  258. and all the prophets,

  259. he interpreted to them

  260. and all the scriptures

  261. the things concerning himself.

  262. Jesus is clearly saying

  263. that there are an abundance

  264. of scriptures

  265. in the Old Testament

  266. that are pointing to me,

  267. and not just me,

  268. his death and his resurrection,

  269. the very good news

  270. that we get to proclaim.

  271. It's gospel fulfillment.

  272. And 24 continues,

  273. and his disciples

  274. are back in Jerusalem.

  275. He shows up there

  276. in Jerusalem among them,

  277. says, hey, peace be with you.

  278. And then in verse 44,

  279. we read this,

  280. these are my words

  281. that I spoke to you

  282. while I was still with you,

  283. that everything written about me

  284. in the law of Moses

  285. and the prophets

  286. and the Psalms

  287. must be fulfilled.

  288. Then he opened their minds

  289. to understand the scriptures

  290. and said to them,

  291. thus it is written,

  292. that the Christ should suffer

  293. and on the third day

  294. rise from the dead

  295. and that repentance

  296. for the forgiveness of sins

  297. should be proclaimed

  298. in his name

  299. to all nations

  300. beginning from Jerusalem.

  301. You are witnesses

  302. of these things.

  303. It's gospel fulfillment.

  304. Jesus fulfills

  305. the Old Testament

  306. in a number of ways.

  307. We call this

  308. a Christological understanding

  309. of the Old Testament

  310. or a Christocentric way

  311. of understanding

  312. the Old Testament.

  313. And it is absolutely remarkable

  314. because who makes a claim

  315. like that

  316. other than Emmanuel,

  317. God with us?

  318. How did Jesus understand

  319. his relationship

  320. to the Old Testament?

  321. Well, to put it short and sweet,

  322. he says it's about me.

  323. I came not to abolish them

  324. but to fulfill them.

  325. Which brings up

  326. question number three.

  327. Another aspect

  328. of this fulfillment,

  329. we see it

  330. in the verses

  331. that follow

  332. back in Matthew 5

  333. in verses 21

  334. through 48,

  335. Jesus is talking about

  336. restoring the original intent

  337. of these Old Testament commands.

  338. I mean, we just looked at

  339. Luke 24

  340. and on a higher level,

  341. Jesus is saying

  342. the Old Testament

  343. is pointing to me,

  344. my death and resurrection

  345. in a variety

  346. of different ways.

  347. But in verses 21

  348. through 48,

  349. Jesus tackles

  350. six examples

  351. of how

  352. he

  353. restores

  354. the original

  355. scope

  356. and intent

  357. of the law

  358. of God.

  359. He brings fullness

  360. to it.

  361. He restores it.

  362. He restores it.

  363. He restores

  364. the original intent

  365. of the law.

  366. And can I just tell you

  367. the way in which

  368. he restores it

  369. is found in verse 48

  370. of chapter 5.

  371. He says,

  372. you therefore

  373. must be perfect

  374. as your heavenly

  375. Father is perfect.

  376. And so he's going

  377. to explain

  378. these six examples

  379. by way of

  380. kingdom perfection.

  381. perfection.

  382. This is what

  383. true righteousness

  384. and holiness

  385. looks like.

  386. In verses 21

  387. through,

  388. I'll just point to

  389. verses 21

  390. through 26,

  391. it starts by saying,

  392. you've heard that

  393. it was said

  394. to those of old,

  395. you shall not murder

  396. and whoever murders

  397. will be liable

  398. to the judgment.

  399. Verse 22,

  400. but I say to you

  401. that everyone

  402. who is angry

  403. with his brother

  404. will be liable

  405. to the judgment.

  406. Whoever insults

  407. his brother

  408. will be liable

  409. to the counsel

  410. and whoever says

  411. you fool

  412. will be liable

  413. to the hell of fire.

  414. Do you know

  415. what he's doing?

  416. He's like,

  417. here's the true intent

  418. of the command

  419. you shall not murder.

  420. It's not only

  421. forbidding the actual

  422. physical act

  423. of murder,

  424. but it's actually

  425. addressing

  426. your anger

  427. and hatred

  428. to your brothers

  429. and sisters.

  430. he's saying

  431. your anger

  432. is murderous

  433. intent.

  434. So he's bringing

  435. out the fullness,

  436. the full meaning

  437. of the law.

  438. And in verses 27

  439. through 30

  440. he does something

  441. very similar

  442. with the law

  443. you shall not

  444. commit adultery.

  445. You've heard

  446. that it was said

  447. verse 20,

  448. you shall not

  449. commit adultery,

  450. but I say to you

  451. that everyone

  452. who looks at a woman

  453. with lustful intent

  454. has already committed

  455. adultery with her

  456. in his heart.

  457. So someone can think

  458. oh you should not

  459. commit adultery

  460. like okay I'm not

  461. going to touch

  462. anybody else's spouse,

  463. right?

  464. But what Jesus is saying

  465. is even if you look

  466. lustfully at someone else

  467. you've broken the command.

  468. Your lust

  469. is adulterous intent.

  470. And so what Jesus

  471. is doing is

  472. he's moving beyond

  473. the behaviors

  474. and exposing

  475. our hearts.

  476. Do you remember

  477. in times where people

  478. would talk about Jesus

  479. as one speaking

  480. with authority?

  481. This is it.

  482. Here's the true

  483. intent of the law.

  484. It is to expose you.

  485. It's to show you

  486. who you really are

  487. and you can't hide

  488. behind your behaviors.

  489. You can't just manage

  490. your behaviors

  491. and think you're okay.

  492. And so what he does

  493. in verse 31

  494. with no fault divorce

  495. what he does

  496. in verses 33

  497. through 37

  498. in terms of

  499. how you use your words

  500. to swear oaths

  501. and he gets at

  502. in 38 through 42

  503. when he gets at

  504. this kind of

  505. this vindication

  506. we can feel

  507. an eye for an eye

  508. tooth for a tooth

  509. and he gets at

  510. in 43 through 47

  511. when people say

  512. love your neighbor

  513. but hate your enemies

  514. and he's like

  515. what?

  516. Did you not know

  517. that your enemy

  518. is your neighbor

  519. and you're to love

  520. your enemy?

  521. He brings about

  522. the true intent

  523. of the law.

  524. He restores

  525. the original scope

  526. and reach

  527. of the command.

  528. Remember he was there

  529. when they were given.

  530. There's no escape.

  531. It exposes our hearts.

  532. We are shown

  533. for who we are

  534. and you know

  535. what it leads us to?

  536. Declaration of

  537. spiritual bankruptcy.

  538. of being able

  539. to say

  540. you know that's

  541. I'm a breaker

  542. of that command.

  543. I can't

  544. I don't obey

  545. that command.

  546. I'm

  547. I'm in debt

  548. I'm in over my head.

  549. That's the intent

  550. of the law.

  551. That's how Paul

  552. talks about

  553. the use of the law

  554. when the law

  555. is a tutor.

  556. It brings us

  557. to the end

  558. of ourselves.

  559. It exposes

  560. our hearts

  561. shows us

  562. who we are

  563. and it shows us

  564. our desperate

  565. need

  566. for a savior.

  567. The guy's speaking.

  568. So how does Jesus

  569. restore

  570. the commands?

  571. He brings

  572. he brings

  573. their true

  574. intent back.

  575. He

  576. wants

  577. our hearts

  578. to be exposed

  579. leading us

  580. to spiritual bankruptcy

  581. leading us

  582. to mourning

  583. over our sin

  584. leading us

  585. to a meekness

  586. leading us

  587. to a true hunger

  588. and thirsting

  589. for true righteousness

  590. purity of heart

  591. mercy

  592. and it's a way

  593. in which he fulfills

  594. the law.

  595. he brings

  596. back its

  597. true meaning.

  598. Can't escape it.

  599. Fourth question.

  600. What does it mean

  601. when Jesus says

  602. relaxing the least

  603. of these commandments?

  604. We read that

  605. in verse 19.

  606. Therefore whoever

  607. relaxes one of the least

  608. of these commandments

  609. and teaches others

  610. to do the same

  611. will be called

  612. least in the kingdom

  613. of heaven.

  614. Remember Jesus

  615. has been reiterating

  616. in this passage

  617. that he did not

  618. come to remove

  619. the law

  620. or to reduce

  621. the law

  622. or to relax

  623. the law

  624. but he's come

  625. to restore

  626. the true intent

  627. of the law.

  628. Maybe a better

  629. question to ask

  630. is

  631. who's Jesus

  632. talking about?

  633. Who's relaxing

  634. the commandments?

  635. Who does he have

  636. in mind?

  637. And the surprise

  638. is that he has

  639. in mind

  640. is the Pharisees.

  641. The religious

  642. professionals

  643. of the day.

  644. it was these

  645. religious

  646. professionals

  647. that

  648. are the ones

  649. he quotes.

  650. You've heard

  651. that it was said

  652. to those of old

  653. in verse 21

  654. 27

  655. you've heard

  656. that it was said

  657. verse 31

  658. it was also said

  659. 33

  660. again

  661. you've heard

  662. that it was said

  663. 38

  664. you've heard

  665. that it was said

  666. 43

  667. you've heard

  668. that it was said

  669. you should not

  670. you should love

  671. your neighbor

  672. and hate

  673. your enemy

  674. your Bible

  675. doesn't say that

  676. it's actually

  677. a relaxing

  678. of the law

  679. you're like

  680. what hey

  681. how does that work?

  682. Here's how

  683. they're relaxing

  684. the law

  685. they're adding

  686. to the commands

  687. they're focusing

  688. on behavior

  689. and by doing so

  690. they are actually

  691. avoiding

  692. having

  693. the commands

  694. thoroughly

  695. search

  696. their hearts

  697. they're avoiding

  698. the exposure

  699. to be the sinners

  700. that they

  701. really were

  702. so these six

  703. examples

  704. that you have

  705. heard

  706. that it was said

  707. these are the

  708. distortions

  709. of the Pharisees

  710. this is actually

  711. them relaxing

  712. the commands

  713. so that they

  714. can manage

  715. the commands

  716. and feel good

  717. about themselves

  718. but Jesus

  719. says

  720. in every

  721. single

  722. of these six

  723. examples

  724. but I say

  725. to you

  726. let me

  727. just correct

  728. this relaxation

  729. of the command

  730. and he

  731. presses into

  732. the full

  733. intent

  734. and impact

  735. of it

  736. calling us

  737. to perfection

  738. he doesn't

  739. Jesus doesn't

  740. relax

  741. the standard

  742. of perfection

  743. of pure

  744. holiness

  745. he calls

  746. us to it

  747. and so

  748. these Pharisees

  749. they thought

  750. they were

  751. perfect examples

  752. of righteousness

  753. but you remember

  754. what Jesus

  755. calls them

  756. whitewashed

  757. tombs

  758. you look great

  759. on the outside

  760. but on the inside

  761. you're just

  762. rotten death

  763. kingdom citizens

  764. when we

  765. come across

  766. the commands

  767. instead of

  768. thinking

  769. okay

  770. okay

  771. how can I

  772. how can I

  773. make this command

  774. fit my life

  775. what we do

  776. is like

  777. oh

  778. I'm exposed

  779. I'm exposed

  780. my heart

  781. has been exposed

  782. I declare

  783. spiritual bankruptcy

  784. so relaxing

  785. the commandments

  786. is interpreting

  787. God's commands

  788. in such a way

  789. to avoid

  790. the sin

  791. in your heart

  792. to manage

  793. behavior

  794. so let me ask you

  795. a question

  796. along these lines

  797. when you confess

  798. your sins

  799. to God

  800. what are you

  801. typically

  802. confessing

  803. are you

  804. confessing

  805. behaviors

  806. or are you

  807. also

  808. confessing

  809. sinful

  810. acts

  811. sinful

  812. behaviors

  813. and sinful

  814. attitudes

  815. sinful

  816. heart

  817. postures

  818. anger

  819. and hate

  820. and lust

  821. and greed

  822. and

  823. insatiable

  824. desire

  825. for comfort

  826. if you're not

  827. you've got

  828. room to grow

  829. to be able

  830. to say

  831. oh God

  832. would you

  833. expose

  834. my heart

  835. shine your

  836. light

  837. through your

  838. commands

  839. on the

  840. darkness

  841. in my

  842. heart

  843. so that I

  844. can walk

  845. in a

  846. purity of

  847. heart

  848. of acknowledging

  849. your sin

  850. now if you're

  851. in the room

  852. and you're

  853. actually saying

  854. something like

  855. this

  856. you know

  857. what

  858. let's see

  859. I'm trying

  860. to remember

  861. the last time

  862. I actually

  863. confessed

  864. my sin

  865. in which

  866. I wasn't

  867. prompted

  868. hmm

  869. if you don't

  870. remember the last

  871. time you've

  872. confessed your

  873. sin

  874. you need to

  875. ask a

  876. different

  877. question

  878. what does

  879. that reveal

  880. about you

  881. what does

  882. that reveal

  883. about your

  884. hunger

  885. and thirst

  886. for righteousness

  887. maybe

  888. you're not

  889. relaxing

  890. the commands

  891. as much

  892. as you are

  893. a little

  894. too

  895. relaxed

  896. about

  897. the commands

  898. you're not

  899. taking them

  900. seriously

  901. enough

  902. we must

  903. view the

  904. Old Testament

  905. the way that

  906. Jesus viewed

  907. the Old Testament

  908. not relaxing

  909. the commandments

  910. but allowing

  911. the commandments

  912. to search

  913. our hearts

  914. and expose

  915. us

  916. and then we

  917. cry out to

  918. him

  919. again and

  920. again and

  921. again

  922. one last

  923. question and

  924. answer

  925. chapter or

  926. chapter 5

  927. verse 20

  928. for I tell you

  929. unless your

  930. righteousness exceeds

  931. that of the

  932. scribes and

  933. Pharisees

  934. you will

  935. never

  936. enter the

  937. kingdom of

  938. heaven

  939. what kind

  940. of righteousness

  941. is this

  942. that exceeds

  943. the scribes

  944. and the

  945. Pharisees

  946. I mean

  947. weren't the

  948. scribes and

  949. Pharisees the

  950. most righteous

  951. people around

  952. they were the

  953. ones that would

  954. kind of wrap

  955. their cloaks

  956. around them

  957. when they were

  958. walking through

  959. just the normal

  960. everyday people

  961. so not to be

  962. touched and

  963. made unclean

  964. aren't they the

  965. most righteous

  966. people aren't

  967. aren't they the

  968. ones who are

  969. pictures of

  970. holiness

  971. if you ask

  972. them they would

  973. say of course

  974. we are

  975. but they were

  976. relaxing the

  977. commandments

  978. Jesus isn't

  979. calling us to

  980. a just like

  981. two notches

  982. better than the

  983. righteousness of

  984. the Pharisees

  985. by degree

  986. that's not the

  987. righteousness that

  988. Jesus is referring

  989. to here

  990. he's talking

  991. about a

  992. different kind

  993. of righteousness

  994. he's talking

  995. about a

  996. righteousness

  997. that is

  998. given to

  999. those who

  1000. declare spiritual

  1001. bankruptcy

  1002. those who

  1003. are saying

  1004. I am utterly

  1005. unrighteous

  1006. help me

  1007. Lord

  1008. and then

  1009. they're made

  1010. righteous

  1011. don't you

  1012. want to know

  1013. how that works

  1014. remember

  1015. Jesus fulfilled

  1016. the righteous

  1017. requirements of

  1018. the whole law

  1019. and the prophets

  1020. he did what we

  1021. could never do

  1022. and when a

  1023. sinner declares

  1024. spiritual bankruptcy

  1025. for the first

  1026. time they're like

  1027. I am shot

  1028. through by these

  1029. commands I am

  1030. exposed for the

  1031. sinner that I am

  1032. there's no way I

  1033. could save myself

  1034. I am justly

  1035. under God's

  1036. wrath

  1037. when you

  1038. recognize that

  1039. and admit that

  1040. to God

  1041. and say

  1042. oh help me

  1043. Lord Jesus

  1044. God forgives

  1045. your sin debt

  1046. Jesus pays

  1047. for all that

  1048. debt on the

  1049. cross

  1050. so there's no

  1051. more debt over

  1052. your head

  1053. and it just

  1054. doesn't end

  1055. there

  1056. it's God

  1057. then credits

  1058. your account

  1059. with the very

  1060. righteousness

  1061. of Christ

  1062. so not

  1063. check it out

  1064. the righteous one

  1065. was made

  1066. unrighteous

  1067. so that the

  1068. unrighteous ones

  1069. could be made

  1070. righteous

  1071. and on the

  1072. basis of

  1073. that work

  1074. by faith

  1075. in Christ

  1076. welcome to

  1077. the kingdom

  1078. what kind of

  1079. righteousness

  1080. exceeds that

  1081. of the

  1082. scribes and

  1083. Pharisees

  1084. it's Christ's

  1085. righteousness

  1086. and without it

  1087. no one can

  1088. enter the

  1089. kingdom of

  1090. heaven

  1091. and when

  1092. Christ's

  1093. righteousness

  1094. is imputed

  1095. to you

  1096. you are going

  1097. to hunger

  1098. and thirst

  1099. for the

  1100. real

  1101. righteousness

  1102. a heart

  1103. righteousness

  1104. that which

  1105. the commands

  1106. actually call

  1107. us to

  1108. I started

  1109. talking about

  1110. an epidemic

  1111. where do you

  1112. put old

  1113. tech

  1114. maybe your

  1115. home has

  1116. an old

  1117. tech

  1118. graveyard

  1119. like our

  1120. home does

  1121. old tech

  1122. that's

  1123. irrelevant

  1124. it's out

  1125. of date

  1126. it's useless

  1127. but as we've

  1128. been seeing

  1129. Jesus here

  1130. speak about

  1131. the Old

  1132. Testament

  1133. what I hope

  1134. you're seeing

  1135. this morning

  1136. is that Jesus

  1137. is extraordinary

  1138. and this claim

  1139. by which he says

  1140. he came to

  1141. fulfill the Old

  1142. Testament

  1143. it's extraordinary

  1144. so far

  1145. from being

  1146. out of date

  1147. irrelevant

  1148. and useless

  1149. the Old

  1150. Testament

  1151. is always

  1152. to date

  1153. it's incredibly

  1154. relevant

  1155. and it's

  1156. super useful

  1157. because it

  1158. gives us

  1159. Jesus

  1160. it points

  1161. us to him

  1162. again

  1163. and again

  1164. and again

  1165. the Old

  1166. Testament

  1167. is a

  1168. Christological

  1169. gold mine

  1170. unto salvation

  1171. but don't

  1172. take my

  1173. word for

  1174. it

  1175. take

  1176. Jesus

  1177. word for

  1178. it

  1179. I came

  1180. not to

  1181. abolish

  1182. them

  1183. the law

  1184. and the

  1185. prophets

  1186. but to

  1187. fulfill

  1188. them

  1189. that's

  1190. something to

  1191. be very

  1192. thankful

  1193. about

  1194. and it

  1195. changes

  1196. the way

  1197. you view

  1198. the Old

  1199. Testament

  1200. let's pray

  1201. God in

  1202. heaven

  1203. thank you

  1204. for the

  1205. Old

  1206. Testament

  1207. every word

  1208. in it

  1209. and thank

  1210. you for

  1211. these words

  1212. of Jesus

  1213. that give

  1214. us light

  1215. in order

  1216. to understand

  1217. the Old

  1218. Testament

  1219. that in

  1220. ways that

  1221. not

  1222. we don't

  1223. always

  1224. understand

  1225. but are

  1226. ways that

  1227. are glorious

  1228. that these

  1229. 39 books

  1230. point again

  1231. and again

  1232. to your

  1233. great work

  1234. realized in

  1235. the person

  1236. of Jesus

  1237. Christ

  1238. by which

  1239. you're gathering

  1240. a people

  1241. for yourself

  1242. who will

  1243. praise you

  1244. for eternity

  1245. God thank you

  1246. so much

  1247. for the

  1248. Beatitudes

  1249. thank you

  1250. so much

  1251. for these

  1252. words of

  1253. Jesus

  1254. we've been

  1255. gathering

  1256. around this

  1257. fall

  1258. would you

  1259. prepare our

  1260. hearts

  1261. as we

  1262. enter

  1263. the Advent

  1264. season

  1265. in Jesus

  1266. name we

  1267. pray

  1268. amen

  1269. amen

  1270. so
