  1. Well, good morning.

  2. As Mike shared, my name is Dave, and it is a pleasure to be here this morning.

  3. When I first met Mike, I immediately knew that I was going to like him.

  4. His heart for the Lord and for his people is evident, but despite my last name, Cartwright,

  5. which is English, my mom is Italian, so I knew I would like him just based on his name.

  6. And coming into Kenosha this morning, I actually have not really spent much time in Kenosha.

  7. And driving through, it's just like Italian restaurant after Italian restaurant, so I

  8. will take recommendations afterwards of where I should go.

  9. I would appreciate that.

  10. Oh, okay, we already got one.

  11. It's a privilege to be here.

  12. It is good to get to be together with brothers and sisters in the Lord just a few miles away.

  13. It's a unique privilege of working for the Simeon Trust that we just get to see the way

  14. that God is moving in so many different local congregations.

  15. Be encouraged of the work that the Lord is doing simply in southeastern Wisconsin.

  16. You might not always see it, but great things are being done.

  17. Our passage this morning is in Matthew 8.

  18. I'm going to read it in its entirety, Matthew 8, 23 through 9, 8.

  19. Afterwards, I'll pray and then we will jump in.

  20. So if you want to turn there, Matthew 8, starting in verse 23.

  21. And when he, being Jesus, got into the boat, his disciples followed him.

  22. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea so that the boat was being swamped by the waves.

  23. But he was asleep.

  24. And they went and woke him, saying, Save us, Lord, we are perishing.

  25. And he said to them, Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?

  26. Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

  27. And the men marveled, saying, What sort of man is this that even the winds and sea obey him?

  28. And when he came to the other side, to the country of Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him coming out of the tomb so fierce that no one could pass that way.

  29. And behold, they cried out, What have you to do with us, O son of God?

  30. Have you come here to torment us before the time?

  31. Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them, and the demons begged him, saying,

  32. If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.

  33. And he said to them, Go.

  34. So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.

  35. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city, they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men.

  36. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.

  37. Getting into the boat, he crossed over and came to his own city.

  38. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed.

  39. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Take heart, my son, your sins are forgiven.

  40. Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, This man is blaspheming.

  41. But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Why do you think evil in your hearts?

  42. For which is easier to say, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise and walk.

  43. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.

  44. He then said to the paralytic, Rise, pick up your bed, and go home.

  45. And he rose and went home.

  46. When the crowd saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

  47. Let's pray.

  48. Father, we thank you for your word.

  49. We thank you that in the midst of all else that is going on in life, your word draws us back to you.

  50. It comforts us.

  51. It challenges us.

  52. It gives us a picture of who you are.

  53. In your majesty, in your glory, in your love.

  54. And so, Father, as we come here this morning, we pray that you use your word to shape us more into the image of your Son.

  55. We pray all this in his name.

  56. Amen.

  57. Despite all the emotional turmoil that it has given me over the years, I can't help but absolutely love the NFL.

  58. It is one of my favorite hobbies.

  59. It's one of the things that I enjoy most in the world.

  60. It's sitting down on Sunday and watching football.

  61. Now, I'm not originally from Wisconsin, so I kind of dread actually bringing this up in conversation when I'm initially meeting somebody.

  62. Because they will, of course, ask, well, do you follow the Green Bay Packers?

  63. And to my shame, I say, no, I'm not from Wisconsin.

  64. I do not follow the Green Bay Packers.

  65. And they're a little distraught at my response.

  66. And they have the follow-up question, which I dread even more.

  67. Well, then, who do you follow?

  68. It is with great shame I come before you this morning and say, I follow the Dallas Cowboys.

  69. I know.

  70. That's the response.

  71. That's why I hate this conversation.

  72. And then after people collect themselves, they ask the follow-up question.

  73. Why?

  74. Why do you follow the Dallas Cowboys?

  75. I wish I had a good reason.

  76. I wish I could say something like, you know, it was a family team that was passed down from father to son.

  77. And that's why I passionately follow the Dallas Cowboys.

  78. I don't have a good reason for why I follow the Cowboys.

  79. Simply, I was born in the 90s.

  80. I was a frontrunner.

  81. They were the best team, and I followed them.

  82. And I've stuck with them, and I have paid for it ever since.

  83. I do not have a good reason for following the Dallas Cowboys.

  84. I admit it.

  85. The question I have for us this morning is pretty simple.

  86. Why do you follow Jesus?

  87. I mean, why do you follow Jesus day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year?

  88. In good seasons, in bad seasons, when life is full, when life is full of disappointments,

  89. why do you continue to follow Jesus?

  90. Perhaps you're here this morning, and you're not actually a follower of Jesus.

  91. So the question for you is, well, why should you consider even following this Jesus?

  92. Matthew is going to answer this question for us this morning.

  93. And if I could put Matthew's argument of why we should follow Jesus into one simple phrase,

  94. let me say it like this.

  95. Follow the one who has all authority to fix everything.

  96. That's why you and I should follow Jesus.

  97. That's why you and I should continue to follow Jesus.

  98. Because he's the one who has all authority to fix everything.

  99. As we go through our passage this morning, we're going to see three scenes.

  100. Each scene has a different arena, a different realm,

  101. in which Jesus is going to bring his authority into to fix,

  102. to realign things.

  103. He's going to use his authority, his prerogative, and his power

  104. to bring into order, to bring into perfect alignment

  105. that which has become absolute chaos.

  106. The first arena we see is the natural world.

  107. We see this in 8.23-27.

  108. The disciples decided to follow Jesus.

  109. They decided to get onto this boat with him.

  110. And very quickly, it becomes a lot different than perhaps what they expected.

  111. We thought following Jesus was going to be fun.

  112. We thought it was going to be easy.

  113. Now all of a sudden, he's downstairs taking a nap,

  114. and we're in the middle of a storm.

  115. Most of these men were fishermen,

  116. so they probably had some experience in storms,

  117. but not like this.

  118. They did everything they knew how to do to keep the boat up,

  119. but even them, at a certain point,

  120. realized that there was no hope for them.

  121. And so they run down to where Jesus is sleeping,

  122. and they stir him awake.

  123. And in verse 27, or I'm sorry,

  124. then they say to him,

  125. Lord, save us.

  126. They cry out,

  127. and he's right there,

  128. but they're still not confident

  129. that he's actually going to be able to save them.

  130. Now for us, on this side of the cross,

  131. sometimes it's a little easy to poke fun at the disciples, isn't it?

  132. I mean, how foolish of them, how silly of them.

  133. They have Jesus in the boat,

  134. and they are losing their minds.

  135. But don't you and I do the same thing?

  136. Life can become chaotic,

  137. and all of a sudden, we're screaming out,

  138. Lord, save us.

  139. And we're wondering, is he even listening?

  140. Is he even there?

  141. Or is he just asleep at the wheel

  142. as life becomes chaotic?

  143. Jesus wakes up from his nap,

  144. and with one word,

  145. that's all it takes,

  146. he calms this storm.

  147. And the disciples,

  148. their response in verse 27,

  149. look at it again.

  150. They marveled,

  151. saying,

  152. what sort of man is this

  153. that even the winds and the sea obey him?

  154. Indeed, what kind of man

  155. would have authority over nature?

  156. From a Jewish perspective,

  157. it can only be one thing,

  158. one person.

  159. It would have to be God.

  160. The Jewish faith

  161. saw God as the creator.

  162. He was the only one

  163. who had power over nature.

  164. Psalm 107, verse 28 and 29

    Psalms 107:28

  165. put it this way,

  166. they cried out to the Lord

  167. in their trouble,

  168. and he brought them out

  169. of their distress.

  170. He stilled the storm

  171. to a whisper.

  172. The waves of the sea

  173. were hushed.

  174. So what Matthew is showing us here

  175. in this little scene

  176. is Jesus demonstrating

  177. his divine authority

  178. over nature.

  179. This act

  180. is nothing less

  181. than his declaration

  182. of I am fully God.

  183. And while this act

  184. leaves these men

  185. in a state of confusion,

  186. they don't know

  187. what to make of it.

  188. I mean, who is this man

  189. that the seas even obey him?

  190. You and I

  191. are not to be left

  192. in a state of confusion

  193. as they were.

  194. You and I have the benefit

  195. of being on the other side

  196. of the cross

  197. and of Jesus' resurrection.

  198. And when we see Jesus

  199. and his divine authority

  200. over the natural world,

  201. despite all the chaos

  202. that we still see present

  203. in this world,

  204. rather than leading you

  205. to confusion

  206. of where are you, Jesus,

  207. let it bring you

  208. to a place of comfort.

  209. That Jesus is indeed

  210. in control.

  211. That he does indeed

  212. reign over this world.

  213. I don't think I need

  214. to convince anybody

  215. in this room

  216. that this world

  217. is in need of fixing.

  218. We could talk for hours

  219. about the chaos

  220. that we see

  221. as we turn on the news.

  222. Natural disasters,

  223. disease,

  224. mental health problems,

  225. tragic accidents.

  226. The world is a deeply

  227. broken place.

  228. It's in need

  229. of some serious repair.

  230. And you and I

  231. can easily get caught

  232. looking at it

  233. and simply say,

  234. is this ever going

  235. to get better?

  236. When you think of it,

  237. it makes you

  238. a little frantic.

  239. It makes you

  240. a little uneasy

  241. and you get why

  242. the disciples

  243. and we would say,

  244. Lord, save us.

  245. But rather than confusion,

  246. let it drive you

  247. to comfort,

  248. knowing Jesus'

  249. divine authority.

  250. That one day,

  251. even though

  252. your heart will stop

  253. and my heart will stop,

  254. one day,

  255. Jesus will come back

  256. and all who have

  257. followed him

  258. will have eternal life,

  259. that he will bodily

  260. raise us from the dead.

  261. In this fallen world,

  262. nature is distorted,

  263. it deteriorates,

  264. it groans,

  265. it causes damage,

  266. but one day,

  267. when Jesus returns,

  268. he's going to

  269. perfectly restore

  270. and bring harmony

  271. to the natural world

  272. as it was always

  273. meant to be.

  274. and you and I

  275. will live in that

  276. wonderful paradise.

  277. The ailments,

  278. the fragility,

  279. the diseases

  280. that plague

  281. our earthly bodies.

  282. One day,

  283. when Jesus returns,

  284. he says that there

  285. will be no more death

  286. or mourning

  287. or crying

  288. or pain

  289. because he,

  290. praise God,

  291. will make all

  292. things new.

  293. I don't know what

  294. your struggle is

  295. this morning.

  296. I don't know what

  297. chaos in your life

  298. is wreaking havoc.

  299. Maybe it is a disease.

  300. Maybe it is

  301. the damage

  302. that somehow

  303. you have

  304. endured

  305. through a fallen

  306. relationship.

  307. but we are

  308. not to be

  309. confused

  310. about who

  311. is in charge.

  312. Find comfort.

  313. Don't have

  314. little faith

  315. because chaos

  316. does not rule

  317. the day

  318. and it most certainly

  319. will not win.

  320. You and I

  321. know

  322. the one

  323. who has

  324. divine authority

  325. and who has

  326. the power

  327. to restore

  328. our world

  329. as it is

  330. meant to be.

  331. that is why

  332. we follow him.

  333. But of course

  334. it is not just

  335. that the natural

  336. world is out

  337. of order.

  338. We can see

  339. that in the

  340. next scene

  341. Matthew 8

  342. 28-34

  343. here we see

  344. it is not the

  345. natural world

  346. that Jesus

  347. is setting

  348. back to

  349. right

  350. but the

  351. spiritual realm.

  352. Jesus enters

  353. into

  354. this land

  355. which is

  356. actually outside

  357. of Israel.

  358. It is one of

  359. the few places

  360. in the gospel

  361. accounts

  362. that Jesus

  363. goes outside

  364. of Israel

  365. outside of

  366. the promised

  367. land of

  368. God's people.

  369. It is as if

  370. Jesus is

  371. literally

  372. entering

  373. into

  374. enemy

  375. territory.

  376. And he

  377. enters in

  378. and gets

  379. out of

  380. the boat

  381. and he

  382. encounters

  383. these two

  384. demon possessed

  385. men.

  386. He thought

  387. the storm

  388. was powerful

  389. of the natural

  390. world.

  391. Well look

  392. at these

  393. two men

  394. in this

  395. spiritual realm.

  396. The text

  397. says in

  398. verse 28

  399. that no

  400. one could

  401. even get

  402. past them.

  403. But in

  404. verse 29

  405. notice what

  406. they call

  407. him son

  408. of God.

  409. Even

  410. these two

  411. men are

  412. recognizing

  413. Jesus'

  414. divine

  415. nature

  416. and the

  417. authority

  418. that he

  419. carries.

  420. Now of

  421. course when

  422. we come to

  423. a text like

  424. this our

  425. minds

  426. immediately

  427. ask like

  428. okay well

  429. does this

  430. still happen

  431. today?

  432. Like I

  433. mean are

  434. spiritual

  435. forces still

  436. active in

  437. this way?

  438. Let's

  439. start

  440. with the

  441. idea that

  442. 100%

  443. they are

  444. still at

  445. play.

  446. Listen to

  447. me as I

  448. read from

  449. Ephesians 6

  450. this is the

  451. Apostle Paul

  452. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 6:12–13

  453. 6 verses

  454. 12 through

  455. 13.

  456. For we do

  457. not wrestle

  458. against flesh

  459. and blood

  460. but against

  461. the rulers

  462. against the

  463. authorities

  464. against the

  465. cosmic powers

  466. over this

  467. present darkness

  468. against the

  469. spiritual forces

  470. of evil

  471. in the heavenly

  472. places.

  473. Therefore

  474. take up the

  475. whole armor

  476. of God

  477. that you

  478. may be able

  479. to withstand

  480. in the evil

  481. day and

  482. having done

  483. all to

  484. stand firm.

  485. The Apostle

  486. Paul is very

  487. clear that these

  488. spiritual forces

  489. are not

  490. passive.

  491. They are still

  492. very much

  493. active.

  494. And they

  495. are opposed

  496. to God

  497. and to

  498. everybody

  499. who would

  500. desire to

  501. follow him.

  502. And they

  503. love attacking

  504. God's people.

  505. Their tactics

  506. are pretty

  507. simple.

  508. They bind,

  509. deceive,

  510. and they

  511. entice

  512. into sin.

  513. And the

  514. result that

  515. we have

  516. is the

  517. world that

  518. we see.

  519. It's not

  520. one of

  521. natural order

  522. becoming

  523. chaotic

  524. but are

  525. spiritual

  526. one,

  527. are

  528. moral

  529. one.

  530. We see

  531. this as

  532. legitimately

  533. the problem

  534. of evil

  535. that affects

  536. every single

  537. one of us,

  538. every human

  539. that has

  540. ever been

  541. born,

  542. the pain

  543. and destruction

  544. that sin

  545. brings.

  546. But as

  547. powerful as

  548. they are,

  549. they

  550. legitimately

  551. are no

  552. match for

  553. Jesus.

  554. Once again

  555. in verse

  556. 32,

  557. Jesus simply

  558. says one

  559. word,

  560. go.

  561. That's it.

  562. It's not

  563. some giant

  564. struggle,

  565. it's one

  566. word,

  567. and that

  568. carries

  569. enough power,

  570. enough

  571. authority,

  572. enough weight

  573. that they

  574. immediately

  575. are vanquished.

  576. What Matthew

  577. is showing us

  578. in this scene

  579. is that Jesus

  580. not only has

  581. authority to

  582. set right the

  583. natural world,

  584. but he has

  585. authority to

  586. fix the

  587. spiritual one

  588. as well.

  589. What does

  590. this mean for

  591. you and I

  592. this morning?

  593. I would say

  594. simply this,

  595. you no longer

  596. have to walk

  597. as you once

  598. did.

  599. We don't

  600. have to walk

  601. in sin,

  602. we don't have

  603. to walk in

  604. the patterns

  605. of life that

  606. cause so much

  607. damage to

  608. ourselves and

  609. to others,

  610. you are

  611. free to

  612. walk in

  613. the newness

  614. of life

  615. that Jesus

  616. alone provides.

  617. You don't

  618. have to be

  619. living as a

  620. citizen of

  621. the domain

  622. of darkness,

  623. but you are

  624. now freed,

  625. you are now

  626. liberated to

  627. live as a

  628. citizen of

  629. the kingdom

  630. of God.

  631. So my

  632. question for

  633. you is,

  634. which kingdom

  635. are you living

  636. in?

  637. I want to

  638. speak to

  639. those of us

  640. this morning

  641. that perhaps

  642. are feeling

  643. especially weighed

  644. down by

  645. sin,

  646. feeling defeated

  647. by a particular

  648. sin that has

  649. seemingly held

  650. you captive,

  651. that as much

  652. as you try,

  653. as much as you

  654. pray, it seems

  655. that you can't

  656. get free of

  657. it.

  658. I want to

  659. sin.

  660. The idea

  661. that this

  662. sin will

  663. always have

  664. you in

  665. bondage,

  666. that is a

  667. lie.

  668. We see it

  669. simply here.

  670. Jesus has

  671. the authority,

  672. he has the

  673. power.

  674. He has

  675. overcome

  676. that which

  677. binds you.

  678. It's another

  679. lie straight

  680. out of hell

  681. that you will

  682. never be free

  683. of sin

  684. that binds

  685. you.

  686. I think

  687. for a lot

  688. of us,

  689. it is simply

  690. a matter of

  691. believing this

  692. truth,

  693. that Jesus'

  694. authority

  695. actually has

  696. conquered

  697. the spiritual

  698. binds

  699. that are so

  700. easily

  701. around us

  702. and entangle

  703. us.

  704. take hope.

  705. This is

  706. the beauty

  707. of the

  708. gospel,

  709. that though

  710. once we

  711. were in

  712. the kingdom

  713. of darkness,

  714. we can now

  715. live in the

  716. kingdom of

  717. light.

  718. Why do we

  719. follow Jesus?

  720. Simple.

  721. He's the

  722. one who's

  723. liberated us.

  724. He's the

  725. one who has

  726. freed us

  727. and defeated

  728. the evil

  729. spiritual

  730. forces.

  731. What's

  732. interesting in

  733. this little

  734. scene,

  735. though,

  736. is the

  737. town's

  738. response.

  739. The town

  740. sees what

  741. Jesus has

  742. done and

  743. they're not

  744. really impressed.

  745. They're not

  746. rejoicing that

  747. these two men

  748. that have been

  749. bound by this

  750. evil spirit

  751. have been

  752. freed.

  753. And they're

  754. most certainly

  755. not interested

  756. in following

  757. Jesus either.

  758. They just

  759. want him

  760. to leave.

  761. Seeing Jesus

  762. demonstrate his

  763. divine authority

  764. over nature,

  765. that left the

  766. disciples in

  767. confusion,

  768. but seeing his

  769. divine authority

  770. over the

  771. spiritual realm,

  772. that left the

  773. town simply

  774. wanting to

  775. dismiss him,

  776. refusing his

  777. authority.

  778. We want

  779. nothing to do

  780. with you.

  781. We just want

  782. to live as we

  783. want to live.

  784. Don't come in

  785. here and mess it

  786. all up.

  787. Go away.

  788. It reminds me

  789. of Jesus'

  790. words in the

  791. gospel of John

  792. in chapter 3

  793. when he says,

  794. the light has

  795. come into the

  796. world and

  797. people loved the

  798. darkness rather

  799. than the light

  800. because their

  801. works were evil.

  802. You might be

  803. here this morning

  804. and confess Jesus,

  805. but realize that

  806. it's not simply

  807. that you're caught

  808. up in sin,

  809. but you're actively

  810. participating in it,

  811. that you're

  812. voluntarily giving

  813. yourself to it.

  814. you're dismissing

  815. his divine

  816. authority over

  817. your life.

  818. Or maybe you're

  819. here this morning

  820. and you've just

  821. never put your

  822. faith in Jesus

  823. at all.

  824. Maybe you're here

  825. this morning and

  826. you've never

  827. actually responded

  828. to him as the

  829. one who is

  830. Lord and Savior.

  831. And now you're

  832. seeing that Jesus

  833. actually has come,

  834. yes, as the one

  835. with authority,

  836. but the one who

  837. uses his authority

  838. for your good.

  839. To free you from

  840. the power and

  841. bondage of sin.

  842. To bring life

  843. where sin has only

  844. left death.

  845. This is the Jesus

  846. that Matthew says

  847. is worth following

  848. with everything.

  849. And if that is you,

  850. I would plead with

  851. you this morning to

  852. talk to myself,

  853. talk to Mike,

  854. talk to whomever

  855. brought you here

  856. this morning about

  857. what it looks like

  858. to believe and

  859. follow Jesus.

  860. does beg the

  861. question though,

  862. because at some

  863. point we've all

  864. actually rejected

  865. Jesus' authority,

  866. right?

  867. We know that.

  868. So it begs the

  869. question,

  870. well, if I

  871. recognize that I

  872. have rejected

  873. Jesus' authority,

  874. when I come to

  875. him,

  876. will he accept

  877. me?

  878. Or will he just

  879. cast me out?

  880. Matthew moves us

  881. into his last

  882. scene.

  883. We see that Jesus

  884. not only has

  885. authority over

  886. nature,

  887. not only over the

  888. spiritual realm,

  889. he has authority

  890. to repair

  891. our hearts.

  892. The last story

  893. is a unique one.

  894. A man hears that

  895. Jesus is in town.

  896. undoubtedly,

  897. this man had

  898. heard of Jesus'

  899. ability to heal.

  900. And so,

  901. being a paralytic,

  902. he makes sure

  903. that he ends up

  904. in front of Jesus.

  905. He gets some of

  906. his friends to

  907. help him.

  908. And he's

  909. lowered down,

  910. and the initial

  911. words that come

  912. out of Jesus'

  913. mouth are

  914. certainly not

  915. what he expected

  916. to hear.

  917. He was looking

  918. for a physical,

  919. miraculous healing.

  920. He was looking

  921. for the ability

  922. to walk again.

  923. Instead,

  924. Jesus says

  925. something very

  926. strange.

  927. Son,

  928. your sins

  929. are forgiven.

  930. Now,

  931. I want to be

  932. clear,

  933. it isn't that

  934. Jesus is

  935. unconcerned

  936. with our

  937. physical condition.

  938. It's not that

  939. Jesus is

  940. unconcerned

  941. with our

  942. physical

  943. well-being.

  944. In chapter

  945. eight of,

  946. or,

  947. sorry,

  948. in chapter

  949. seven of

  950. Matthew,

  951. you,

  952. we see

  953. Jesus healing

  954. again and

  955. again,

  956. compassionately

  957. going towards

  958. those who

  959. are sick,

  960. who have

  961. diseases.

  962. Jesus is

  963. very concerned

  964. and compassionate

  965. towards our

  966. physical state.

  967. At the same

  968. time,

  969. Jesus knows

  970. it is not

  971. our biggest

  972. problem.

  973. Jesus knows

  974. that there

  975. is something

  976. in much

  977. more need

  978. of repair

  979. than our

  980. physical

  981. bodies.

  982. It's our

  983. hearts.

  984. The question

  985. becomes,

  986. if the human

  987. heart

  988. is in need

  989. of repairing,

  990. who can

  991. actually do

  992. it?

  993. This is

  994. what Jesus

  995. does for us.

  996. So,

  997. who does

  998. he choose

  999. to heal

  1000. though?

  1001. Whose

  1002. hearts

  1003. does he

  1004. repair?

  1005. We see

  1006. it right

  1007. there in

  1008. verse two.

  1009. When Jesus

  1010. saw their

  1011. faith.

  1012. That's it.

  1013. That's all

  1014. it takes.

  1015. It's that

  1016. simple.

  1017. Jesus sees

  1018. this man's

  1019. faith and

  1020. he exercises

  1021. his authority

  1022. to forgive

  1023. sins.

  1024. It doesn't

  1025. matter what

  1026. you've done.

  1027. It doesn't

  1028. matter what

  1029. you will

  1030. do.

  1031. Jesus responds

  1032. to those who

  1033. come to him

  1034. in faith to

  1035. forgive their

  1036. sins.

  1037. Our story

  1038. doesn't end

  1039. there though.

  1040. Usually you

  1041. would think that

  1042. the story would

  1043. end there.

  1044. This man came,

  1045. his sins were

  1046. forgiven,

  1047. everybody goes

  1048. home happy,

  1049. but the story

  1050. doesn't end

  1051. there,

  1052. does it?

  1053. I actually

  1054. like the fact

  1055. that it doesn't

  1056. end there because

  1057. if you're anything

  1058. like me,

  1059. Jesus declaring

  1060. this forgiveness

  1061. over this man,

  1062. you question.

  1063. How do I know?

  1064. How can I be

  1065. confident that

  1066. Jesus actually

  1067. does have the

  1068. authority to

  1069. forgive my

  1070. sins?

  1071. I mean,

  1072. can I be

  1073. confident?

  1074. Can I rest

  1075. assured that

  1076. Jesus actually

  1077. does what he

  1078. says he

  1079. does?

  1080. A few other

  1081. people had the

  1082. same question.

  1083. In verse 3,

  1084. the scribes and

  1085. religious leaders,

  1086. they hear and

  1087. see what he's

  1088. done and they

  1089. say this man is

  1090. blaspheming.

  1091. And there's a

  1092. clear reason why

  1093. they would say

  1094. this in their

  1095. understanding,

  1096. only God can

  1097. forgive sins and

  1098. Jesus is not

  1099. God.

  1100. So, he is

  1101. usurping God's

  1102. authority and

  1103. putting himself in

  1104. position of God.

  1105. Of course that's

  1106. blasphemy.

  1107. And let's be

  1108. clear, if Jesus

  1109. wasn't God, if he

  1110. didn't have this

  1111. divine authority,

  1112. this divine

  1113. prerogative and

  1114. power to do

  1115. such a thing,

  1116. they would be

  1117. absolutely right.

  1118. So, Jesus

  1119. turns to them

  1120. and he's like,

  1121. fine, I'll

  1122. play your little

  1123. game and I'll

  1124. prove it to you.

  1125. I'll prove to

  1126. you that I have

  1127. all authority to

  1128. forgive sins as

  1129. I have said that

  1130. I do.

  1131. What's easier to

  1132. say in verse 5?

  1133. Your sins are

  1134. forgiven or rise

  1135. and walk?

  1136. You have to

  1137. love Jesus'

  1138. move here.

  1139. It's quite

  1140. genius.

  1141. Because what is

  1142. easier?

  1143. To say your sins

  1144. are forgiven or

  1145. to say rise and

  1146. walk?

  1147. Well, anybody can

  1148. say your sins are

  1149. forgiven.

  1150. You can't really

  1151. see it.

  1152. You can't show

  1153. it.

  1154. But rise and

  1155. walk to a

  1156. paralytic?

  1157. That's undeniable

  1158. proof.

  1159. And so, Jesus is

  1160. going to give

  1161. them the proof

  1162. that they so

  1163. desire.

  1164. this indisputable

  1165. proof.

  1166. And I love the

  1167. way that he says

  1168. it, so that you

  1169. may know.

  1170. Again, how can

  1171. you and I be

  1172. certain?

  1173. How can we be

  1174. confident?

  1175. How can we rest

  1176. assured that Jesus

  1177. actually does

  1178. forgive our sins?

  1179. That he does

  1180. have the power and

  1181. authority to do

  1182. so?

  1183. Well, we see it

  1184. in this healing.

  1185. we can be

  1186. confident that

  1187. Jesus means what

  1188. he says when he

  1189. says your sins are

  1190. forgiven.

  1191. And this is the

  1192. Jesus that Matthew

  1193. is imploring you and

  1194. I to follow once

  1195. again, day after day,

  1196. week after week,

  1197. year after year.

  1198. We all sin.

  1199. We all have guilt

  1200. and shame.

  1201. And that guilt

  1202. and shame

  1203. tells us a

  1204. narrative

  1205. about who we

  1206. are, about how

  1207. God and Jesus

  1208. feel about us.

  1209. Church, don't

  1210. let that

  1211. story

  1212. that comes from

  1213. your guilt, that

  1214. comes from your

  1215. shame, have

  1216. more power

  1217. and more

  1218. authority than

  1219. the words of

  1220. your Lord and

  1221. Savior.

  1222. Let those words

  1223. sink deep into

  1224. your soul, that

  1225. you who have

  1226. placed your faith

  1227. in Christ can

  1228. be confident that

  1229. he has forgiven

  1230. you of your

  1231. sins.

  1232. God does not

  1233. want us as his

  1234. people to doubt

  1235. what he has

  1236. done for us.

  1237. He doesn't want

  1238. us to go

  1239. through life

  1240. wondering, is

  1241. he still

  1242. actually mad at

  1243. me?

  1244. Does he still

  1245. hold it against

  1246. me?

  1247. He doesn't want

  1248. us wondering

  1249. whether or not

  1250. we will face

  1251. his wrath when

  1252. we come before

  1253. him face to

  1254. face.

  1255. He wants us

  1256. to be confident

  1257. in his divine

  1258. authority to

  1259. forgive our

  1260. sins.

  1261. And he has

  1262. this authority

  1263. because he's

  1264. the one who

  1265. went to take

  1266. those sins on

  1267. our behalf.

  1268. As we read

  1269. earlier in

  1270. Isaiah 53,

  1271. he bore our

  1272. sins so that

  1273. we might be

  1274. healed.

  1275. And then to

  1276. prove that his

  1277. death was

  1278. sufficient for

  1279. our justification,

  1280. on the third

  1281. day he rose

  1282. again.

  1283. An even

  1284. greater miracle

  1285. for us to

  1286. witness than

  1287. the hearing

  1288. of the

  1289. paralytic.

  1290. So church,

  1291. be confident

  1292. that your

  1293. Lord and

  1294. Savior,

  1295. when he says

  1296. you are

  1297. forgiven,

  1298. you are

  1299. indeed

  1300. forgiven.

  1301. This is why

  1302. we follow

  1303. Jesus.

  1304. He has

  1305. all authority

  1306. to fix

  1307. everything,

  1308. the natural

  1309. world,

  1310. the spiritual

  1311. world.

  1312. Most

  1313. importantly,

  1314. me,

  1315. you.

  1316. He has

  1317. the ability,

  1318. the authority

  1319. to forgive

  1320. us and fix

  1321. us.

  1322. The crowd's

  1323. response is

  1324. a little

  1325. different in

  1326. this last

  1327. scene.

  1328. It's not

  1329. confusion,

  1330. it's not

  1331. dismissal,

  1332. it's one of

  1333. celebration.

  1334. they lift

  1335. their voices

  1336. in

  1337. thanksgiving

  1338. and praise

  1339. because finally

  1340. somebody has

  1341. all authority.

  1342. This world

  1343. needs to fix

  1344. all of its

  1345. problems.

  1346. songs.

  1347. I love

  1348. anthem songs.

  1349. An anthem

  1350. song being,

  1351. you know,

  1352. when you're at a

  1353. barbecue,

  1354. it comes on

  1355. and everybody

  1356. sings along

  1357. to it,

  1358. right?

  1359. It just,

  1360. like,

  1361. everybody knows

  1362. it and it

  1363. captures some

  1364. universal

  1365. experience and

  1366. emotion.

  1367. Something like

  1368. Piano Man.

  1369. We didn't start

  1370. the fire.

  1371. Apparently,

  1372. I love

  1373. Billy Joel.

  1374. I love

  1375. anthem songs.

  1376. One of my

  1377. favorite anthem

  1378. songs is

  1379. is Authority

  1380. song by

  1381. John Mellencamp.

  1382. It captures

  1383. this rebellious

  1384. spirit

  1385. of American

  1386. youth.

  1387. In it,

  1388. he writes

  1389. this simple

  1390. line,

  1391. I fight

  1392. authority

  1393. and authority

  1394. always wins.

  1395. I fight

  1396. authority and

  1397. authority always

  1398. wins.

  1399. It's a great

  1400. anthem.

  1401. I particularly

  1402. enjoy listening

  1403. to it on the

  1404. way to work,

  1405. in my car,

  1406. just screaming

  1407. it out.

  1408. I fight

  1409. authority and

  1410. authority always

  1411. wins.

  1412. Brothers and

  1413. sisters,

  1414. for you and

  1415. I,

  1416. if we are

  1417. following Jesus,

  1418. we have a

  1419. very different

  1420. anthem in our

  1421. hearts.

  1422. Our anthem is

  1423. one that celebrates

  1424. his authority.

  1425. authority and

  1426. thank God that

  1427. his authority

  1428. always wins.

  1429. Let's pray.

  1430. Jesus,

  1431. we thank you

  1432. that you

  1433. indeed do

  1434. have all

  1435. authority.

  1436. Lord,

  1437. in that you

  1438. use your

  1439. authority

  1440. not just to

  1441. serve yourself,

  1442. but to

  1443. serve us.

  1444. as you

  1445. said,

  1446. the Son of

  1447. Man did

  1448. not come

  1449. to be

  1450. served,

  1451. but to

  1452. serve.

  1453. And so,

  1454. Lord,

  1455. we pray

  1456. as we

  1457. look at

  1458. your

  1459. authority,

  1460. we don't

  1461. look at it

  1462. as something

  1463. that is

  1464. confusing to

  1465. us,

  1466. but something

  1467. that comforts

  1468. us.

  1469. Not as

  1470. something to

  1471. dismiss,

  1472. but something

  1473. to accept.

  1474. And something

  1475. to be

  1476. confident in.

  1477. that your

  1478. authority,

  1479. your death

  1480. and resurrection

  1481. are sufficient

  1482. to cover

  1483. all our

  1484. sins if we

  1485. put our

  1486. faith in

  1487. you.

  1488. Amen.
