  1. And if you would open up to Hebrews chapter 10 in your Bibles, it's on 1194 of your pew Bibles.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  2. I'm going to read for us Hebrews 10, 19 through 25.

  3. I'm actually going to be reaching back into verse 19 for the sermon this morning.

  4. So you can see on your bulletin, I'm going to be preaching 10, 19 through 25.

  5. Hear God's word.

  6. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  7. by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain that is through his flesh,

  8. and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,

  9. let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith,

  10. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience,

  11. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  12. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering,

  13. for he who promised is faithful.

  14. And let us consider to stir up one another to love and good works,

  15. not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some,

  16. but encouraging one another in all the more as you see the day drawing near.

  17. May God bless the hearing of his word.

  18. Hey, let me ask you a question.

  19. How does something become a recurring commitment on your weekly schedule?

  20. Whether that's your personal schedule or whether that is your family schedule,

  21. how does something get on your family schedule on a weekly basis?

  22. Maybe it's you are committed to eating together as a family every week.

  23. Why is that so important to you?

  24. Maybe you and your significant other are committed to a weekly date night.

  25. Why is that so important to you?

  26. Maybe you're exercising weekly.

  27. Why does that matter so much to you?

  28. Maybe this is about children's activities, sports, theater, music.

  29. You're saying no to some things to say yes to those things.

  30. Why is that so important?

  31. Maybe like me, you block off three to four hours every weekend to watch a football game.

  32. Why is that so important?

  33. You know, when we're evaluating some of these things that we commit our time to on a weekly basis,

  34. there's a couple questions you can ask.

  35. Like, okay, what is the long-term good that comes out of this weekly commitment?

  36. What is it producing?

  37. Another question you can do to ask about weekly commitments is this.

  38. When Jesus comes back, what will he think about that commitment?

  39. When it comes to our Sunday-by-Sunday gathering as a church,

  40. we all have a sense that it's important.

  41. Have you ever asked the question, why?

  42. Why is this so important?

  43. Should a Christian do all that they can to gather weekly with their local church?

  44. When I bring these topics up with brothers and sisters, members of our church who have been inconsistent,

  45. chronically inconsistent, attending on a Sunday morning,

  46. when I bring it up, it's usually met with some kind of defensiveness or bristling.

  47. Because they think this is a matter of attendance.

  48. Like they're not following through with their commitment.

  49. That's not why I'm bringing it up.

  50. I'm bringing it up because God's word brings it up.

  51. You see, what I'm concerned about,

  52. what God's concerned about,

  53. is your long-term spiritual health and well-being.

  54. This is not a matter of attendance.

  55. This is a matter of God's grace.

  56. In order for us to persevere to the end,

  57. we need weekly infusions of God's grace.

  58. We need to be encouraged by God's grace together to persevere.

  59. At our weekly grace gathering,

  60. God encourages us to endure to the end.

  61. We need to meet weekly for the grace

  62. so that we can hold fast to the end.

  63. That's the point of Hebrews 10, 19-25.

  64. And this is an argument that the author of Hebrews is making.

  65. And it's a three-step argument.

  66. Step one, verses 19-21,

  67. what God has done,

  68. He has given us unlimited access

  69. and an unlimited abundance of grace.

  70. It's amazing what He's done.

  71. Step two,

  72. how we together respond to that.

  73. Three exhortations.

  74. And then step three,

  75. how we together lay hold of that

  76. by meeting together.

  77. We gather weekly for the grace

  78. to persevere all the way to the end.

  79. So let's look at this first step in this argument.

  80. Now, I realize I'm jumping right into

  81. like the last third of the book of Hebrews.

  82. And I just want to let you know,

  83. this is a little bit of preview

  84. because I'm going to start preaching

  85. through the book of Hebrews

  86. as a whole come February.

  87. The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians

  88. who were drifting,

  89. who would be tempting to walk away.

  90. And this book of Hebrews

  91. is one long 13-chapter encouragement

  92. to hold fast,

  93. to press on and persevere and endure.

  94. And to that end,

  95. the book of Hebrews

  96. over and over again

  97. fixes our eyes on Jesus.

  98. What He has done.

  99. And in this passage,

  100. the author of Hebrews

  101. points us to

  102. the strategy of our local gathering

  103. unto that end.

  104. In verses 19-21,

  105. we have this first step in the argument.

  106. And what the author of Hebrew does

  107. is he points us to two motivations.

  108. And they're marked by the word since.

  109. Verse 19,

  110. Therefore, brothers,

  111. since we have confidence

  112. to enter the holy places

  113. by the blood of Jesus.

  114. Verse 21,

  115. And since we have a great high priest,

  116. great priest over the house of God.

  117. Here's what He's doing.

  118. He's saying,

  119. Since this is true

  120. and since this is true,

  121. then we must do this

  122. and let us do this

  123. and let us do this.

  124. It's an argument.

  125. Trying to persuade us

  126. of the importance of something.

  127. So let's just look at this first sense real quick.

  128. Therefore, brothers,

  129. since we have confidence

  130. to enter the holy places

  131. by the blood of Jesus,

  132. by the new and living way

  133. that He opened to us

  134. through the curtain,

  135. that is through His flesh.

  136. This first grace motivation

  137. is access.

  138. Through Jesus' death and resurrection,

  139. through His blood and the living way,

  140. His resurrection,

  141. the new is a new covenant.

  142. Through these things that Jesus has done,

  143. He has given us unlimited access

  144. to the holy place of God.

  145. The heavenly holy place.

  146. What we'll see in Hebrews 4

  147. is the throne room of God.

  148. Back in the old covenant,

  149. the Holy of Holies

  150. was this place in the temple in Jerusalem

  151. that only one man

  152. could enter once a year

  153. on Yom Kippur.

  154. The high priest.

  155. To make sacrifice for the people.

  156. And on the 364 days

  157. outside of Yom Kippur,

  158. there was like a sign

  159. on the curtain

  160. separating us,

  161. separating them

  162. from the Holy of Holies.

  163. It said,

  164. no admittance,

  165. no access.

  166. What we're being talked about here

  167. is a heavenly holy place.

  168. A heavenly throne room.

  169. And what Jesus has done

  170. through the good news

  171. of His death and resurrection

  172. is His life,

  173. the curtain,

  174. has been opened to us

  175. so that we can enter in

  176. to the holy place,

  177. God's very presence.

  178. We have unlimited access

  179. to the very presence of God.

  180. There was a time

  181. when we couldn't

  182. because we were in our sins.

  183. But now there's a time we can

  184. because we're in Christ now.

  185. It's through Christ's death

  186. and resurrection

  187. that we have unlimited access

  188. to the Holy of Holies,

  189. the very throne room

  190. of God's grace.

  191. And since we have

  192. been given this unlimited access

  193. to the throne of grace,

  194. we do something now.

  195. But that's just the first sense.

  196. There's a second sense.

  197. And since we have

  198. a great high priest

  199. over the house of God,

  200. the book of Hebrews

  201. makes this phenomenal claim

  202. that Jesus is

  203. the great high priest

  204. who has superseded

  205. and made obsolete

  206. the Jewish priesthood.

  207. because he's

  208. made a better sacrifice

  209. once and for all

  210. himself.

  211. It's a once for all payment

  212. that has forgiven us

  213. forever.

  214. He's a high priest

  215. with a better ministry.

  216. He is constantly

  217. making intercession for us

  218. because

  219. he's alive.

  220. He's a better person.

  221. All of the priests

  222. of the Old Testament

  223. are dead.

  224. Their bodies

  225. have wasted away.

  226. Not our high priest.

  227. His is an indestructible life.

  228. He lives to make

  229. intercession for us.

  230. And this great high priest,

  231. do you know what he's

  232. saying to us?

  233. Come to me,

  234. all you who are weary

  235. and heavy laden,

  236. and I'll give you grace.

  237. You see,

  238. what this great high priest

  239. is pointing us to

  240. is not just

  241. we have unlimited access

  242. to him,

  243. we have an unlimited

  244. abundance

  245. to the grace

  246. that he gives.

  247. Unlimited abundance.

  248. It's not like

  249. we only get three servings

  250. every day.

  251. We can go to him

  252. whenever we want

  253. for the grace.

  254. Listen to this.

  255. This is Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  256. 14 through 16.

  257. Since then we have

  258. a great high priest

  259. who has passed

  260. through the heavens,

  261. Jesus,

  262. the Son of God.

  263. Let us hold fast

  264. our confession.

  265. For we do not have

  266. a high priest

  267. who is unable

  268. to sympathize

  269. with our weaknesses,

  270. but one who

  271. in every respect

  272. has been tempted

  273. as we are,

  274. yet without sin.

  275. Let us then

  276. with confidence

  277. draw near

  278. to the throne

  279. of grace

  280. that we may

  281. receive mercy

  282. and find grace

  283. to help

  284. in time of need.

  285. What is grace?

  286. Many of you

  287. who have been

  288. raised in the church

  289. have an answer.

  290. It's God's

  291. unmerited favor.

  292. It's a posture

  293. of God towards us

  294. where a holy God

  295. is his posture

  296. towards us

  297. is not dependent

  298. on our posture

  299. towards him.

  300. It's unconditional

  301. love for us.

  302. And that is

  303. one aspect

  304. of grace

  305. because when I read

  306. Hebrews 4.16,

  307. I read about

  308. a throne of grace

  309. that provides

  310. help in time

  311. of need.

  312. Do you know

  313. what that is?

  314. Power.

  315. Unconditional love,

  316. unlimited power.

  317. The Apostle Paul

  318. in 2 Corinthians 12

  319. has been praying

  320. that God

  321. would remove

  322. this throne,

  323. this thorn

  324. of his flesh

  325. and Jesus

  326. speaks to him.

  327. My grace

  328. is sufficient

  329. for you

  330. for my power

  331. is made perfect

  332. in weakness.

  333. He equates

  334. grace and power.

  335. So here's how

  336. I want you

  337. to think about

  338. God's grace

  339. and what we have

  340. access to

  341. in unlimited fashion

  342. and what is

  343. available to us

  344. in unlimited abundance.

  345. grace.

  346. It's God's

  347. unconditional love

  348. driving his

  349. unlimited power

  350. towards us.

  351. It's all about

  352. grace.

  353. And you know what?

  354. You need that grace

  355. to persevere

  356. to the end.

  357. You can't do it

  358. on your own.

  359. You can't flesh it out.

  360. You can't muscle it out.

  361. And this is what

  362. God has done.

  363. Unlimited access,

  364. unlimited availability

  365. to his grace

  366. at his throne.

  367. This is what

  368. God has done.

  369. And this is where

  370. this little argument

  371. starts.

  372. Since God

  373. has made a way

  374. to his

  375. unlimited grace.

  376. Step two.

  377. How do we respond?

  378. How do you respond

  379. to that kind of

  380. unlimited access

  381. and unlimited

  382. availability of grace?

  383. Well, there's

  384. three exhortations

  385. in verses 22

  386. through 24.

  387. Let's just take them

  388. off one at a time.

  389. God's grace

  390. is available

  391. to us,

  392. brothers and sisters.

  393. So look at

  394. verse 22.

  395. Since this,

  396. since that,

  397. let us draw near.

  398. Let us draw near.

  399. Draw near to what?

  400. He doesn't say.

  401. He's already said

  402. to the throne of grace.

  403. Let us draw near

  404. into God's presence.

  405. grace.

  406. And we're to do

  407. that with confidence.

  408. With a true heart

  409. and full assurance

  410. of faith.

  411. Sprinkled clean.

  412. Bodies washed.

  413. That's talking about

  414. the cleansing work

  415. of God

  416. through Christ.

  417. His death

  418. and His resurrection.

  419. There is therefore

  420. now no condemnation

  421. for those who are

  422. in Christ Jesus.

  423. So now,

  424. because you're in Christ,

  425. you can enter

  426. the very presence

  427. of God

  428. without any fear

  429. whatsoever.

  430. Come to me.

  431. Come to me for grace.

  432. Anytime you want,

  433. you've got full access.

  434. Draw near to me.

  435. Draw near to my throne.

  436. Did you notice

  437. the word us?

  438. Let us draw near.

  439. How does that happen?

  440. Where and when

  441. does that take place?

  442. Exhortation 2

  443. is in verse 23.

  444. Since God

  445. has made available

  446. His grace,

  447. we're to draw near

  448. to Him

  449. together.

  450. And

  451. exhortation 2,

  452. let us hold fast

  453. the confession

  454. of our hope

  455. without wavering.

  456. Hold fast

  457. the confession

  458. of our hope.

  459. A confession

  460. is this

  461. verbal

  462. acknowledgement,

  463. verbal announcement

  464. of what you believe

  465. to be true.

  466. It's out of your heart.

  467. The mouth speaks.

  468. You're saying,

  469. we're saying together,

  470. this is what I believe

  471. about Jesus.

  472. Hope is a theme

  473. throughout the book

  474. of Hebrews

  475. and our hope

  476. is the one

  477. who's gone before us.

  478. Jesus.

  479. Let us hold fast

  480. the confession

  481. of our hope

  482. without wavering.

  483. Wavering

  484. in terms of

  485. wavering of your faith,

  486. wavering of your

  487. pursuit

  488. of our Lord.

  489. Here's what causes us

  490. to waver.

  491. Distraction.

  492. Spiritual dullness.

  493. Doubting.

  494. These are the things

  495. that get in the way.

  496. What causes us

  497. to waver

  498. and what was causing

  499. this first group

  500. of Christians

  501. to waver

  502. is what the world

  503. says.

  504. What the world

  505. prioritizes.

  506. We can't prioritize

  507. what the world

  508. prioritizes

  509. because they don't

  510. confess Jesus

  511. as their king.

  512. We confess

  513. Jesus

  514. and hold fast

  515. to the fact

  516. that he's

  517. the controlling

  518. center of our lives.

  519. All of us

  520. together.

  521. You know

  522. what the opposite

  523. of holding fast

  524. is?

  525. There are words

  526. for it

  527. throughout the book

  528. of Hebrews.

  529. In Hebrews 2.1

  530. it's drifting away.

  531. Hebrews 2.3

  532. it's neglecting

  533. this great salvation.

  534. In verse 5.11

  535. it's pointing to

  536. a dullness

  537. of hearing.

  538. In 10.39

  539. it's a shrinking

  540. back.

  541. And in verses 3

  542. chapter 3

  543. verse 12

  544. and 6

  545. and 6

  546. it's

  547. it's actually apostasy.

  548. It's a falling away.

  549. these are the things

  550. that this book

  551. is written

  552. to help us

  553. fight against

  554. to not get pulled

  555. into.

  556. And so when we talk

  557. about holding fast

  558. it's the very opposite

  559. of drifting away.

  560. It's about persevering.

  561. It's striving

  562. to enter his rest.

  563. It's about enduring

  564. just as the great

  565. hall of fame

  566. all of these

  567. brothers and sisters

  568. they persevere

  569. to the end

  570. just as Jesus

  571. the author

  572. and perfecter

  573. of our faith

  574. has gone before us

  575. enduring the cross.

  576. We're called

  577. to hold fast together.

  578. To press on

  579. to endure

  580. hold fast

  581. this confession

  582. and so together

  583. when we come together

  584. let us

  585. hold fast

  586. the confession

  587. of our hope.

  588. Let us

  589. hold fast

  590. we do this together.

  591. We're saying things

  592. like when we sing

  593. we're singing

  594. to Jesus

  595. we're singing

  596. great things

  597. about our God

  598. we're confessing

  599. what's true

  600. together.

  601. We do this together.

  602. The third

  603. exhortation

  604. is in verse 24

  605. it says

  606. and let us

  607. consider

  608. how to stir up

  609. one another

  610. to love

  611. and good works.

  612. Technically

  613. the exhortation

  614. is to think

  615. carefully.

  616. It's on that

  617. verb consider

  618. but what we're

  619. being told

  620. to consider

  621. is how to

  622. stir one another

  623. up

  624. to love

  625. and good

  626. works

  627. to love

  628. one another

  629. to do

  630. good deeds

  631. and do you know

  632. why we are

  633. to do that?

  634. Because we drift

  635. from that.

  636. We gravitate

  637. to people

  638. who are like

  639. us

  640. who are familiar

  641. with

  642. and what we're

  643. being told

  644. here is to

  645. stir up

  646. one another

  647. to give

  648. careful thought

  649. of how to

  650. stir one another

  651. up

  652. to love

  653. one another

  654. to do good

  655. to one another.

  656. That little

  657. verb

  658. that little

  659. word

  660. stir up

  661. in the ESV

  662. it's a little

  663. stronger than

  664. that.

  665. It's

  666. stir up

  667. is good

  668. but it's

  669. it's

  670. missing

  671. some force.

  672. At the end

  673. of Acts

  674. 15

  675. the same

  676. word is

  677. used

  678. to describe

  679. the sharp

  680. disagreement

  681. between

  682. Paul and

  683. Barnabas.

  684. It's a strong

  685. word.

  686. In fact

  687. the NIV

  688. the New

  689. International

  690. Version

  691. translated this

  692. way

  693. consider how

  694. to spur

  695. one another

  696. on

  697. to love

  698. and good

  699. deeds.

  700. Maybe you've

  701. read a version

  702. that talks

  703. about

  704. provoking

  705. one another

  706. to love

  707. and good

  708. deeds.

  709. This kind

  710. of word

  711. it carries

  712. the sense

  713. of causing

  714. discomfort

  715. of

  716. confrontation

  717. even

  718. of

  719. being able

  720. to come

  721. to one

  722. another

  723. and say

  724. come on

  725. let's

  726. go.

  727. You know

  728. cowboys have

  729. spurs on

  730. their boots.

  731. You know

  732. what they're

  733. for?

  734. Spur the

  735. horse

  736. inflict some

  737. discomfort

  738. so that

  739. beast moves.

  740. and so the

  741. idea here

  742. of

  743. stirring

  744. one another

  745. up

  746. is we're

  747. being in

  748. love

  749. willing to

  750. say things

  751. to one

  752. another

  753. to help

  754. each other

  755. persevere

  756. to love

  757. and to

  758. good deeds.

  759. peace.

  760. You see

  761. these three

  762. exhortations

  763. did you

  764. notice

  765. let us

  766. consider

  767. how to

  768. stir up

  769. one another?

  770. Let us

  771. hold fast?

  772. Let us

  773. draw near?

  774. These

  775. exhortations

  776. are means

  777. by which

  778. we encourage

  779. one another

  780. in light of

  781. God's grace.

  782. In light of

  783. what he's

  784. done.

  785. Because of

  786. his grace

  787. we draw

  788. near together

  789. we hold

  790. fast together

  791. we spur

  792. each other

  793. on.

  794. Where do you

  795. think this

  796. happens?

  797. Week by

  798. week.

  799. Brings us

  800. to the last

  801. step in the

  802. argument.

  803. Verse 25

  804. we're shown

  805. where this

  806. happens.

  807. Not

  808. neglecting to

  809. meet together

  810. as in the

  811. habit of

  812. some but

  813. encouraging

  814. one another

  815. and all the

  816. more as

  817. you see

  818. the day

  819. drawing

  820. near.

  821. The primary

  822. way we

  823. draw near

  824. to God

  825. together,

  826. the primary

  827. way we

  828. hold fast

  829. the good

  830. confession of

  831. Jesus together,

  832. the primary

  833. way in which

  834. we spur

  835. one another

  836. on to love

  837. and good

  838. deeds is

  839. by meeting

  840. together in

  841. person Sunday

  842. after Sunday.

  843. We meet

  844. together because

  845. we are in

  846. desperate need

  847. of God's

  848. grace to

  849. persevere to

  850. the end

  851. together.

  852. Quick

  853. technicality,

  854. grammatical

  855. technicality.

  856. You can check

  857. out, I'll check

  858. you back in in a

  859. minute.

  860. Technically,

  861. verse 25 is a

  862. subordinate clause

  863. of verse 24.

  864. And one can

  865. think that

  866. verse 25 is

  867. therefore kind

  868. of operationalizing

  869. verse 24,

  870. but check back

  871. in.

  872. Follow the flow

  873. of the argument.

  874. In verse 21,

  875. since we have a

  876. great high priest

  877. over the house

  878. of God,

  879. the house of

  880. God,

  881. flip back in

  882. Hebrews,

  883. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 3:6

  884. chapter 3,

  885. verse 6.

  886. But Christ is

  887. faithful over

  888. God's house as

  889. a son,

  890. and we

  891. are his

  892. house.

  893. If indeed we

  894. hold fast our

  895. confidence in our

  896. boasting,

  897. in our hope.

  898. Here's the point I'm

  899. trying to make,

  900. help you see

  901. here.

  902. The writer of

  903. Hebrews is

  904. talking about

  905. the church,

  906. talking about

  907. us,

  908. talking about

  909. the people of

  910. God in a

  911. particular place,

  912. in a particular

  913. time.

  914. He's saying

  915. over the

  916. house of God,

  917. the church,

  918. and then verse

  919. 22, the us

  920. is the house

  921. of God.

  922. Verse 23,

  923. the house,

  924. the us is the

  925. house of God,

  926. the people of

  927. God.

  928. 24 is the

  929. people of

  930. God.

  931. And so when

  932. we get to

  933. 25, it is the

  934. people of God

  935. meeting together,

  936. or not.

  937. All of these

  938. exhortations

  939. happen, they

  940. come to fruition

  941. when we meet

  942. together in

  943. person Sunday

  944. by Sunday.

  945. I'm not sure if

  946. you know this,

  947. but Zach and I

  948. have the privilege

  949. of every week on

  950. our Wednesday

  951. staff meeting,

  952. and we usually

  953. have a blast

  954. doing it.

  955. We create an

  956. order of our

  957. service.

  958. It's what

  959. guides us when

  960. we gather

  961. together as

  962. God's people,

  963. as the house

  964. of God.

  965. It's what some

  966. people call a

  967. liturgy.

  968. And what it is

  969. is basically a

  970. process by which

  971. we draw near to

  972. God, hold fast

  973. our confession,

  974. and spur one

  975. another on.

  976. That's what we

  977. do.

  978. That's one of my

  979. most favorite

  980. moments of the

  981. week.

  982. And so when we

  983. kind of put things

  984. in place, we're

  985. looking to our

  986. Bibles to give

  987. us kind of like,

  988. what do we need to

  989. have together when

  990. we gather?

  991. So there's always a

  992. call to worship.

  993. It's God calling us

  994. to worship.

  995. And then we always

  996. have a benediction,

  997. God kind of wrapping

  998. us up.

  999. And then the songs

  1000. that we sing and

  1001. that we choose,

  1002. they are designed

  1003. to unite us in

  1004. our confession.

  1005. When we pray, like

  1006. Zach prayed a prayer

  1007. of confession this

  1008. morning, it's very

  1009. intentional.

  1010. Do you know why?

  1011. We're drawing near to

  1012. God.

  1013. It's to serve us,

  1014. to serve our

  1015. gathering.

  1016. It's to help us

  1017. lay hold of God's

  1018. grace together.

  1019. And of course, the

  1020. preaching of the

  1021. word, we preach

  1022. Christ and we

  1023. preach so that you

  1024. would be spurred on

  1025. to love and good

  1026. deeds.

  1027. That's what God's

  1028. word gets done.

  1029. You can think about

1030. it as Zach and me

  1031. being curators.

  1032. Like an art curator

  1033. of an art museum

  1034. who designs a show

  1035. from beginning to

  1036. end in which you,

  1037. when you come out,

  1038. you're like, that

  1039. was great.

1040. What Zach and I do

  1041. is to curate a

  1042. gathering in order

1043. to draw near to God,

  1044. hold fast the

  1045. confession of Jesus

  1046. and spur one another

  1047. on.

  1048. But it's not all

  1049. formalities.

1050. You know one of my

  1051. favorite things?

  1052. Before and after

  1053. service?

  1054. Is this informal

  1055. spurring one another

  1056. on.

  1057. It's watching people

  1058. pray together, talk

  1059. together.

  1060. It happens when we

  1061. come together.

  1062. It is so good.

  1063. So when we come

  1064. together, there is

  1065. this outpouring of

  1066. God's grace, both

  1067. formal and informal,

  1068. in order to

  1069. encourage us

  1070. to persevere

  1071. to the end.

  1072. There is a rebuke

  1073. in this passage.

  1074. Not neglecting to

  1075. meet together as is

  1076. the habit of some.

  1077. A rebuke is

  1078. when someone

  1079. says,

  1080. that's not right.

  1081. You shouldn't

  1082. be doing that.

  1083. The original

  1084. audience, if you're

  1085. wondering, if you're

  1086. in your pew right

  1087. now thinking, okay,

  1088. I'm not sure if he's

  1089. talking about the

  1090. Sunday gathering of

  1091. God's people.

  1092. Maybe he's just

  1093. talking about meeting

  1094. together with someone

  1095. over coffee.

  1096. My life group

  1097. getting together.

  1098. I've got an

  1099. accountability group.

  1100. I've got a Bible

  1101. study on Monday

  1102. night.

1103. Let me just help you

  1104. understand something.

  1105. When the original

  1106. audience read this

  1107. letter, there's no

  1108. doubt how they would

  1109. have interpreted that.

  1110. The meeting

  1111. together was the

  1112. meeting together of

  1113. their church for

  1114. worship and exhortation

  1115. with God's word.

  1116. And some people

  1117. had gotten into a

  1118. bad habit of not

  1119. gathering together.

  1120. And here's how that

  1121. pattern shows up.

  1122. Hey, where is so

  1123. and so?

  1124. We haven't seen so

1125. and so for a couple

  1126. weeks.

  1127. That's how you know

  1128. that there's a bad

  1129. habit going on.

  1130. Hey, where is so

  1131. and so?

  1132. Why aren't they

  1133. here?

  1134. Why aren't they

  1135. benefiting from

  1136. God's grace?

  1137. When someone gets

1138. in the bad habit of

  1139. not coming to church,

  1140. gathering with God's

  1141. people, they are

  1142. denying themselves a

  1143. primary means of

  1144. grace.

  1145. and they're opening

  1146. themselves to

  1147. potential drift, to

  1148. potential dullness,

  1149. and apostasy.

  1150. Did you see what

  1151. follows this in

  1152. chapter 10?

  1153. a warning against

  1154. apostasy.

  1155. There's a rebuke,

  1156. and it's a loving

  1157. rebuke, because those

  1158. who neglect the

  1159. gathering of the

  1160. church, they're

  1161. missing out on God's

  1162. grace.

  1163. But there's also a

  1164. correction.

  1165. But encouraging one

  1166. another, and all the

1167. more as you see the

  1168. day drawing near, the

1169. day drawing near is the

  1170. second advent of Jesus.

1171. When he comes back to

  1172. judge, make all things

  1173. right, and we're all

  1174. going to stand before

  1175. the judgment seat of

  1176. Christ someday, and

  1177. we're one day closer.

  1178. So we encourage one

  1179. another.

  1180. By drawing near, by

  1181. holding fast, by

  1182. spurring one another

  1183. on, that's how we

  1184. encourage one another,

1185. and it's not all the

  1186. less.

  1187. It's all the more.

  1188. He's talking about

  1189. gathering.

  1190. That's the immediate

  1191. context.

  1192. Don't neglect meeting

  1193. together.

  1194. Meet together all the

1195. more as you see the day

  1196. approaching.

1197. You need God's grace to

  1198. persevere together.

1199. How do you draw near?

1200. How do we hold fast?

1201. How do we spur each

  1202. other on?

1203. How do we hold each other

  1204. together?

1205. How do we hold each other

  1206. by meeting together in

  1207. person week by week?

1208. It's not the only way.

  1209. It's a primary way.

1210. So what this means for us?

  1211. So what?

  1212. What difference does this

  1213. make?

1214. I've been praying for you

1215. that God's word would have

1216. an effect that would make

  1217. you reconsider your schedule,

  1218. your priorities.

1219. If this is true, then it's

1220. going to be reflected in your

1221. weekly schedule because we all

  1222. need God's grace together.

1223. So why is the Sunday morning

1224. gathering of our church so

  1225. important?

1226. So that you can persevere to the

  1227. end.

1228. It's not about attendance for

  1229. attendance sake.

  1230. It's about God's grace that we

1231. experience when we gather together

  1232. in person.

1233. Are you able to articulate that

1234. argument to yourself and others?

1235. Can you make a case for that?

1236. Are you convinced of that?

1237. Do you see our gathering as

1238. essential to persevering to the

  1239. end?

1240. These are weekly infusions of

1241. grace to ward off unbelief,

1242. drift, and dullness, and to

1243. strengthen us to hold fast to the

  1244. end.

  1245. Do you buy it?

1246. Is that what the author of

  1247. Hebrews is saying?

1248. Is that what God's saying?

1249. Is that what he's calling on you?

1250. Second, in light of that, does

  1251. something need to change?

  1252. Your work schedule.

1253. Is it within your power to shift

1254. around your schedule so that you

1255. can be here on a Sunday morning?

1256. youth sports, I hope what this is

1257. doing is compelling you to have a

  1258. family conversation.

1259. As a family, mom, dad, engage your

1260. children over Hebrews 10 and say,

1261. okay, we see this in our Bibles.

1262. We need to be gathering together as a

1263. church in order to persevere to the

  1264. end.

1265. What do you think, gang?

1266. What do you think this looks like?

1267. What does this mean for what we say no

1268. to and what we say yes to?

1269. What effect will this have over the

  1270. course of our lives?

1271. It doesn't stop when your kids are just

  1272. young.

1273. Our daughter marries in cheer.

1274. This past fall, we learned that there

1275. was a cheer practice called on a Sunday

  1276. morning around 10 a.m.

1277. We had to prepare our daughter for that.

  1278. She's so committed.

1279. She is a tremendous team member.

1280. And we had to let her know, no, sweetheart,

1281. this is a conflict of values.

1282. And what we value more than cheer is our

  1283. gathering as a church.

1284. And so we got her to a point where she

  1285. was okay with it.

1286. And then I called the coach.

1287. I have deep respect for the coach.

  1288. Coach is a believer.

1289. I said, hey, we're not going to be coming.

1290. Mary's not going to be there.

1291. We have a commitment to gathering as a

1292. church that we're seeking to train our

1293. daughter in week after week.

1294. And it's more important than a cheer

  1295. practice.

1296. And you know what I said?

1297. Coach, is this what you want to do?

1298. Do you want to open the door to this?

1299. The coach responded so well.

  1300. They canceled it.

  1301. You know what?

1302. Maybe, parents, if you're in youth sports,

1303. maybe the thing that you need to do is get

1304. on sports league boards and be able to say

  1305. this.

  1306. Hey, you know what?

1307. We'll come to anything except Sunday morning.

1308. Let's schedule our league around that.

1309. Does something need to change?

  1310. Livestream.

1311. If you're watching on Livestream right now,

1312. or if you've watched on Livestream,

1313. Livestream is a good thing.

1314. It helps people who have legitimate reasons

1315. not to be able to make it on a Sunday morning.

1316. But what we have found is that the Livestream

  1317. becomes a crutch.

1318. It makes it easy for people not to come.

1319. But the argument that we're making,

1320. I'm making here this morning,

1321. is it's actually being here in person,

1322. that there's this fullness of God's grace.

1323. So Livestream is at best a lesser grace of God.

1324. And if you're watching on Livestream

1325. and thinking that you're part of our gathering,

1326. you are in one respect,

1327. but you're just kind of like watching in.

1328. It's when we gather as people together,

1329. God is meeting us in a unique way.

1330. Let's say what's best and go after that.

1331. And what's best is gathering together in person,

  1332. week by week.

1333. Another thing that needs to change,

  1334. are you avoiding someone?

1335. Are you not coming to our gathering

  1336. because you're avoiding someone

  1337. or avoiding something?

1338. Consider how to stir up one another

1339. in love and good deeds.

1340. Do you need to get right with someone?

1341. That's the way to deal with that.

1342. Or do you only come on a Sunday

1343. when it's your Sunday to serve?

1344. Will you come on Sundays you're not serving?

1345. Because you need God's grace

1346. to persevere to the end.

1347. Does something need to change?

1348. I want to make one little point right now

1349. and then I'm going to move on to one more thing.

1350. Do you know what is one of the most loving things

1351. you can do, brother and sister in Christ,

  1352. week by week?

  1353. Show up.

  1354. Be present.

1355. Your being here is an encouragement.

  1356. It is good.

1357. It's good for the saints when we gather together

1358. to see one another and hear our voices

1359. as we confess our Lord together.

  1360. It's good.

  1361. Let's add.

  1362. Let's make it a priority.

  1363. It's good.

  1364. It's good.

1365. We love one another by showing up.

  1366. One last question.

1367. How are you preparing yourself to come

  1368. on a Sunday morning?

  1369. What's your process?

1370. How are you getting ready?

1371. I would encourage you to pray.

1372. Oh God, would you pour out your grace

1373. upon our church gathering this morning

1374. that we would draw near to you,

1375. that we'd hold fast to Jesus together

1376. and that we would spur one another

1377. on to love and good deeds.

1378. And then you can pray this.

1379. God, would you encourage me?

1380. And then you can pray this.

1381. God, would you make me an encouragement

1382. to someone else in the room?

1383. Would you give me eyes to see others?

1384. Would you help me to see someone

1385. who needs some kind of encouragement,

  1386. some kind of prayer?

1387. And so now you come as a participant,

1388. not as someone who's just watching.

1389. Should a Christian do all they can do

1390. to gather in person Sunday after Sunday

  1391. with their local church?

1392. On the authority of God's word,

  1393. absolutely.

  1394. Yes.

  1395. Yes.

  1396. We need God's grace

1397. to persevere to the end

  1398. and Sunday,

  1399. our Sunday meeting

1400. is God's primary means of God's grace

1401. to run the race marked out for us.

  1402. The more we gather,

1403. the more we'll be encouraged by God's grace

1404. and the more likely to hold fast.

  1405. The less we gather,

1406. the less we'll be encouraged by God's grace

1407. and the more likely we open ourselves up to drift.

1408. But this weekly grace gathering

1409. encourages us to hold fast to the end

  1410. together following Jesus

  1411. Sunday after Sunday.

  1412. Let's pray together.

  1413. God in heaven,

1414. we want to want to be here together.

1415. Those of us who may not want it,

1416. God, would you change our want?

1417. Would you incline our hearts?

1418. Would you make us courageous

  1419. with our calendars?

1420. Would you help us to say no to good things,

1421. to say yes to best things,

  1422. your things,

  1423. your good design,

  1424. your grace?

1425. Father, would you unite us together

  1426. in our gathering

  1427. week by week?

  1428. Amen.
