  1. If you would open up your Bibles to page 627 of your pew Bibles, it's Proverbs chapter 3, if you've brought your own.

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  2. Last week I started preaching two sermons on generosity.

  3. And let me just read this for you. This is Proverbs chapter 3.

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  4. I'm going to focus on 9, and I'm actually going to focus on one word in verse 9.

  5. Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.

  6. Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.

  7. May God bless the hearing and application of His word.

  8. Let's say this week you get an unexpected phone call from an estate attorney.

  9. Your recently deceased neighbor, she was in her 80s, and you and your family had essentially adopted her.

  10. You were showing her kindness. You were helping her out in so many different ways.

  11. Well, it turns out she wrote you into her will.

  12. You didn't plan that. You weren't pining for that.

  13. You didn't even know she had any money.

  14. You were just seeking to love your neighbor.

  15. This lawyer says, I'm just calling to let you know that you're going to be receiving $10,000

  16. from Gladys' estate by the end of this month.

  17. So for us, it'd be like this coming week. We'd get $10,000 in the mail.

  18. Let me ask you a question.

  19. What do you do?

  20. How does God want you to respond to that?

  21. What should be your attitude, your posture towards that $10,000?

  22. And then what should be your actions, your practice?

  23. What do you do with that?

  24. I hope you're at least asking this.

  25. As God's steward of all that He has given you,

  26. you're asking God, what would you have me do with this?

  27. What would you do with this?

  28. Let's move from a kind of one-time windfall

  29. to now your monthly income.

  30. Most of us in this room are receiving some kind of monthly income.

  31. Maybe you are receiving $20,000 a month,

  32. $10,000 a month.

  33. Maybe you're receiving $5,000 or $3,000 a month.

  34. Maybe you're receiving $5,000 or $3,000 a month.

  35. What should be your posture toward that monthly income?

  36. And what should be the practices of good stewardship

  37. in stewarding that money in a way that pleases the Lord?

  38. Now, if you weren't here last week,

  39. I preached on Proverbs 3, 9 and 10,

  40. and I was trying to make a case that the gospel of Jesus Christ

  41. radically, radically changes our hearts towards money.

  42. Instead of seeing money for our own glory,

  43. now we have been rescued and money is a means to God's glory.

  44. So we're going to steward it to God's glory

  45. because we're God's stewards trusting in God's promises.

  46. This is what the gospel does.

  47. It de-golemizes us.

  48. Remember that?

  49. My precious.

  50. The love of money is like the ring of power in our hands.

  51. It's not a ring.

  52. It's usually on our smartphones

  53. where we're looking at our bank accounts.

  54. Oh, my precious.

  55. The gospel rescues us from that.

  56. This morning, I want to move from

  57. the why we give last week

  58. to the how we give.

  59. And it's that word firstfruits

  60. that is such a help.

  61. When you read that in 3.9,

  62. firstfruits,

  63. with the firstfruits,

  64. we're to honor the Lord

  65. with the firstfruits of all your produce.

  66. The original recipients would have been thinking

  67. like the firstfruits of their barley harvest,

  68. of their wheat harvest.

  69. There's multiple harvests

  70. during the growing year in Israel.

  71. Or if you had a flock,

  72. it would be the firstfruits of your flock.

  73. And it's okay to think in terms of sequence,

  74. like this is the first we give back to God

  75. of what He's given to us.

  76. But this word is not just sequential

  77. in its firstfruits.

  78. This word is qualitative.

  79. We give our best to the Lord.

  80. When we honor the Lord with our wealth,

  81. we give Him the best we have.

  82. And so this morning,

  83. what I want to help you to think through is,

  84. you're going to hear me say that,

  85. give your best to the Lord.

  86. In light of what Christ has done for us,

  87. let's give our best to Him.

  88. And so, I want to help you think through

  89. how to give your best to the Lord

  90. attitudinally,

  91. and how to give your best to the Lord

  92. by way of action.

  93. How to give your best to the Lord

  94. by way of posture of heart,

  95. and how to give your best to the Lord

  96. by way of practice.

  97. There is much grace here.

  98. Now, let's just state the obvious.

  99. There in this room are people

  100. with a wide range of incomes.

  101. Not all of us have the same income,

  102. and that's okay.

  103. We're not making any claim

  104. that all of us should have the same income.

  105. But here's what's going to unite us,

  106. brothers and sisters, as a church.

  107. It's when we are united

  108. in giving our best to the Lord

  109. with whatever He's given to us.

  110. When we are doing that together,

  111. it unites us in a God-pleasing posture.

  112. And so let's give our best to the Lord.

  113. Whatever He's given of us,

  114. let's give our best back.

  115. And let's start off with this

  116. kind of sense of attitude, of posture.

  117. By attitude and posture,

  118. what I'm talking about

  119. essentially is your motivation.

  120. What is the motivation

  121. behind your stewardship in general

  122. and your giving in particular?

  123. And in order to drill down into that,

  124. we're going to move away

  125. from Proverbs chapter 3,

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  126. and I want to bring you

  127. to a passage in 2 Corinthians.

  128. It's in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

  129. If you're looking at your pew Bible,

  130. it starts on page 1149.

  131. And so I just want to give you

  132. some background of what's going on

  133. in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

  134. At this time in the first century,

  135. there was a devastating famine

  136. that had broken out in Jerusalem

  137. and the surrounding areas of Jerusalem.

  138. And it was wreaking havoc

  139. in the Jerusalem church.

  140. So the Jerusalem church

  141. were primary Jewish Christians,

  142. and they were now suffering

  143. because of this famine.

  144. And so the Apostle Paul does something.

  145. It's one of the first Christian relief efforts,

  146. a Christian relief fund.

  147. Do you know what the Apostle Paul does?

  148. He reaches out to primarily Gentile churches

  149. around the Mediterranean basin,

  150. churches in Macedonia,

  151. and the churches in Galatia,

  152. and the church of Corinth.

  153. And he says,

  154. okay gang,

  155. what can you do

  156. to help your brothers and sisters

  157. in the Jerusalem church?

  158. And so what he's doing

  159. in 8 and 9

  160. is he's circling back

  161. to a commitment

  162. they had already made,

  163. and he's motivating them to give.

  164. And so for us,

  165. it's very helpful

  166. because we're going to apply this

  167. not to a one-time gift

  168. to people in need.

  169. We're going to apply this

  170. to our monthly stewardship of God,

  171. what he entrusts to us.

  172. And so with that said,

  173. what I want you to see

  174. in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9

  175. are three motivations,

  176. three attitudinal

  177. kind of lining up

  178. to what pleases God.

  179. The first one is this.

  180. It's in 2 Corinthians 8, 8 and 9.

  181. It's gospel.

  182. It's a gospel-shaped generosity.

  183. It's attitudinal.

  184. It's posture of heart.

  185. It's motivational.

  186. Look what he says.

  187. In verse 8 he says,

  188. I say this not as a command,

  189. but to prove by earnestness

  190. of others that your love

  191. is also genuine.

  192. He's talking about this relief effort

  193. that they've been kind of gathering

  194. for about a year

  195. and they're going to send it.

  196. And he says in verse 9,

  197. for you know the grace

  198. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  199. that though he was rich,

  200. yet for your sake he became poor

  201. so that you by his poverty

  202. might become rich.

  203. This is a gospel motivation

  204. towards generosity.

  205. What's being said here

  206. is that Jesus himself

  207. became poor

  208. so that he would enrich us

  209. with salvation

  210. and that should motivate us

  211. in our giving

  212. to divest ourselves

  213. of some of our wealth

  214. to help other people

  215. become enriched in Jesus.

  216. Jesus.

  217. It's a gospel motivation.

  218. The idea of

  219. he who became rich,

  220. he who was rich

  221. became poor

  222. is talking about

  223. his incarnation.

  224. This is Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  225. 3 through 11

  226. where Jesus who

  227. before he took on flesh,

  228. before the second person

  229. of the Trinity

  230. was incarnated,

  231. he was in glory in heaven

  232. and when he took on flesh,

  233. he took the form of a servant.

  234. He humbled himself.

  235. He became poor

  236. and then he lived

  237. a perfect life,

  238. died on the cross

  239. and through that death

  240. and resurrection,

  241. he brings wealth

  242. to sinners.

  243. He makes us rich

  244. for those who believe.

  245. Yet for your sake,

  246. he who was rich

  247. became poor.

  248. And you know what kind

  249. of riches

  250. it's the riches

  251. of salvation.

  252. It's the riches

  253. of God's grace

  254. that are in Christ Jesus.

  255. It's Jesus himself.

  256. Our riches

  257. in Christ.

  258. Jesus is our treasure.

  259. And so,

  260. when you think about this,

  261. that Jesus is our treasure,

  262. can you stack Jesus up

  263. next to anything

  264. you could possibly think of

  265. on this planet

  266. and say,

  267. how could that

  268. in any way

  269. be more valuable

  270. than him?

  271. This gospel motivation

  272. gets at something

  273. in us

  274. in which

  275. God is saying to us,

  276. just as your God

  277. became poor

  278. to make you rich,

  279. so now you

  280. handle your wealth

  281. to make others

  282. rich in Jesus.

  283. it's powerful motivation.

  284. It's powerful motivation.

  285. Didn't deserve it.

  286. We didn't deserve

  287. Jesus becoming

  288. poor to make us rich.

  289. That's why we read

  290. that this is

  291. the grace

  292. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  293. Christ.

  294. So this first

  295. motivation,

  296. this first dimension

  297. is gospel.

  298. The second aspect

  299. of it is

  300. generosity.

  301. We're to be generous.

  302. If you flip over

  303. to 2 Corinthians 9,

  304. 6,

  305. Paul starts drawing

  306. on a particular

  307. illustration,

  308. particular way

  309. of being

  310. that that congregation

  311. would have been

  312. very familiar with.

  313. The point is this,

  314. Paul writes,

  315. whoever sows sparingly

  316. will also reap sparingly,

  317. and whoever sows

  318. bountifully,

  319. generously,

  320. will also reap

  321. bountifully.

  322. We're not talking

  323. about sowing

  324. as in a sowing machine.

  325. What we're talking

  326. about is

  327. sowing seed.

  328. We're talking about

  329. planting

  330. and growing

  331. and harvesting.

  332. And Paul

  333. is using

  334. this

  335. illustration

  336. to attend

  337. to how we give.

  338. You sow a little,

  339. you reap a little.

  340. You give a little,

  341. you reap

  342. a little.

  343. The sowing

  344. is analogous

  345. to financial giving.

  346. Giving of your

  347. financial resources.

  348. And we're not

  349. to give minimally

  350. according to what

  351. Paul is saying here

  352. is the

  353. principle is we

  354. give generously.

  355. We give abundantly.

  356. Now, if you flip

  357. back to 2 Corinthians

  358. 8,

  359. Apostle Paul does

  360. something really

  361. interesting.

  362. In verses 1 and 2,

  363. he brings up

  364. some other churches.

  365. The churches

  366. of Macedonia.

  367. And he's kind of like,

  368. you know what,

  369. Corinthians,

  370. let me just tell you

  371. what the Macedonians

  372. are doing.

  373. And then he goes on

  374. in verse 3

  375. and he says,

  376. for they,

  377. the Macedonian churches,

  378. gave according to

  379. their means,

  380. as I can testify,

  381. and beyond their means

  382. of their own accord.

  383. In other words,

  384. they had started

  385. to give sacrificially.

  386. Going beyond their means.

  387. These Macedonians

  388. who had nothing

  389. were finding ways

  390. to give

  391. because they

  392. had a gospel

  393. motivation going on.

  394. And they want to be

  395. part of this

  396. relief effort.

  397. They want to be part

  398. of what God was doing.

  399. And so,

  400. what we see here

  401. is not only just

  402. a sowing,

  403. not of a little,

  404. but a sowing

  405. of abundance

  406. and even moving

  407. into sacrificial

  408. giving.

  409. It's kind of like this.

  410. Let's say we're

  411. living in first,

  412. let's say we're

  413. living in Corinth,

  414. but it's Corinth

  415. 21st century.

  416. And if your family

  417. is kind of a,

  418. you stop at Starbucks

  419. a lot.

  420. And there's not

  421. necessarily wrong

  422. with that,

  423. but let's say

  424. you hear about

  425. this need

  426. in the Jerusalem church

  427. and you gather

  428. your family,

  429. you're a dad,

  430. you're leading your home

  431. and you're like,

  432. here's what we're

  433. going to do, gang.

  434. We're going to go

  435. without Starbucks

  436. all year long

  437. and we're going to

  438. take the stuff

  439. that we'd spend

  440. for Starbucks,

  441. we're going to

  442. pile it up

  443. and we're going

  444. to send it

  445. to the church

  446. in Jerusalem

  447. because we can

  448. go without Starbucks

  449. so that they can

  450. eat.

  451. It's that kind

  452. of mentality,

  453. others oriented.

  454. What is really

  455. interesting is when

  456. you start asking

  457. the question,

  458. well, what is

  459. the abundant

  460. harvest that's being

  461. talked about here?

  462. If we're to sow

  463. abundantly,

  464. we're going to

  465. reap abundantly,

  466. what is the

  467. abundant reaping

  468. that we're talking

  469. about?

  470. And you start

  471. to see it

  472. at the end

  473. of chapter 9,

  474. starting in verse 11,

  475. I'm going to

  476. highlight some

  477. words for you.

  478. You will be rich

  479. in every way,

  480. to be generous

  481. in every way,

  482. which through us

  483. will produce

  484. thanksgiving

  485. to God.

  486. Verse 12,

  487. for the ministry

  488. of this service

  489. is not only supplying

  490. the needs of the saints,

  491. but is overflowing

  492. and many thanksgivings

  493. to God.

  494. By their approval

  495. of this service,

  496. they will glorify God

  497. because of your

  498. submission that comes

  499. from your confession

  500. of the gospel of Christ.

  501. Gospel-driven

  502. generosity

  503. and the generosity

  504. of your contribution

  505. for them

  506. and for all others

  507. while they long

  508. for you

  509. and pray for you.

  510. It's uniting

  511. these Christians

  512. because of the

  513. surpassing grace

  514. of God upon you.

  515. Their generosity

  516. is an outworking

  517. of God grace

  518. in them.

  519. And then Paul says,

  520. thanks be to God

  521. for his inexpressible gift.

  522. The harvest

  523. is thanksgiving

  524. among God's people

  525. all over the place.

  526. God gets the glory.

  527. God gets the praise.

  528. He knits his churches

  529. together.

  530. And everybody's saying,

  531. yes and amen,

  532. isn't this good?

  533. It's the second

  534. kind of attitudinal feature

  535. in this passage.

  536. We saw gospel.

  537. Now we've seen generosity.

  538. The last thing

  539. I want you to see

  540. is the joy

  541. in 9-7.

  542. Each one must give

  543. as he's decided

  544. in his heart.

  545. We all have

  546. different incomes.

  547. We're all in

  548. different situations.

  549. But we each must decide

  550. before the Lord

  551. what we give.

  552. Not reluctantly

  553. or under compulsion

  554. for God loves

  555. a cheerful giver.

  556. Would you look at

  557. the person next to you

  558. and just say,

  559. God loves

  560. a cheerful giver?

  561. God loves

  562. a cheerful giver.

  563. And the way

  564. that Paul is talking

  565. about cheerful giving

  566. in the actual verse,

  567. he qualifies it

  568. with some nots.

  569. He says,

  570. cheerful giving

  571. is not reluctantly.

  572. Could you imagine

  573. someone writing a check

  574. to Christ the King Church

  575. and they're kind of like,

  576. oh, fine.

  577. Yeah, okay.

  578. I'll write this,

  579. I guess.

  580. Take it.

  581. You're kind of reluctant.

  582. Paul's like,

  583. keep it.

  584. God loves

  585. a cheerful giver.

  586. A voluntary giver.

  587. Not under compulsion.

  588. You don't feel like

  589. you're having

  590. your arm twisted.

  591. But this is flowing

  592. out of God's work

  593. of grace.

  594. This is flowing

  595. out of what Christ

  596. has done for you

  597. and you're like,

  598. you just,

  599. give me opportunities.

  600. Have you heard

  601. of those stories

  602. about churches

  603. that pass the plate

  604. and the head

  605. of the stewardship

  606. committee looks

  607. at the plate

  608. and that's not enough

  609. and they pass

  610. the plate again?

  611. It's called compulsion.

  612. It's a little manipulative.

  613. Let's just see

  614. what God's word says

  615. and let's respond

  616. in faith.

  617. A cheerful heart

  618. is a heart

  619. shaped by gospel grace.

  620. It's a heart

  621. that is generous

  622. in wanting God

  623. to be exalted

  624. and praised.

  625. it's a heart

  626. that is finding

  627. joy

  628. in what God

  629. is doing

  630. and is happy

  631. to share

  632. their wealth.

  633. It's this

  634. kind of idea

  635. where you're like,

  636. whatever I'm contributing,

  637. if that's going

  638. to more

  639. and more people

  640. treasuring Jesus

  641. above all else,

  642. it's going

  643. to more and more people

  644. that Jesus

  645. is the treasured

  646. center,

  647. the controlling

  648. center of their lives.

  649. Oh,

  650. go

  651. with joy.

  652. So,

  653. these are what

  654. goes into

  655. forming

  656. a mature Christian

  657. attitude

  658. when it comes

  659. to stewardship

  660. in general

  661. and then giving

  662. in particular.

  663. So,

  664. let me ask you,

  665. let's do an audit.

  666. How does your heart

  667. line up?

  668. how is the gospel

  669. shaping,

  670. motivating

  671. your stewardship

  672. and your giving?

  673. How is this,

  674. is there,

  675. is there this sense

  676. of abundant,

  677. I want to be giving

  678. more abundantly,

  679. not sparingly,

  680. but abundantly

  681. so that there would be

  682. this harvest of praise

  683. to God.

  684. is that functional

  685. in you?

  686. Is there joy

  687. in your heart

  688. as you give?

  689. Now,

  690. if you're saying,

  691. well,

  692. no,

  693. I'm not really,

  694. do you know

  695. what you do?

  696. You run

  697. to chapter 8,

  698. verse 9,

  699. and you give thought

  700. to the second person

  701. of the Trinity

  702. becoming poor

  703. in order to make you

  704. rich with Him.

  705. That gospel

  706. tending to your heart

  707. will bring about

  708. a God-pleasing change.

  709. So,

  710. this is getting at,

  711. hey,

  712. let's give our best

  713. to the Lord

  714. and it starts

  715. with attitude.

  716. It starts with heart posture.

  717. So,

  718. for the balance

  719. of our time,

  720. what I'd like to do

  721. is,

  722. what does it mean

  723. to give our best

  724. to the Lord

  725. by way of actions

  726. and by way of practice?

  727. So,

  728. let's say

  729. that you bring

  730. this gospel-shaped heart

  731. to your $20,000

  732. a month income

  733. or $10,000

  734. or $5,000

  735. or $3,000

  736. and your posture

  737. has been transformed

  738. towards this money.

  739. You're like,

  740. Psalm 24,

  741. 1,

  742. all of this

  743. is the Lord

  744. so I'm going

  745. to give back

  746. some of it

  747. to the Lord

  748. with joy.

  749. Now what?

  750. What does that look like?

  751. I wish someone

  752. would have told me

  753. what I'm about to tell you

  754. when I was 23 years old.

  755. This isn't rocket science.

  756. What I'm about to share with you

  757. is common grace,

  758. but I think it will help you.

  759. Here are three categories

  760. to think about

  761. all of your income

  762. of what God entrusts you.

  763. Here are three ways

  764. to think about it.

  765. Three words,

  766. give,

  767. save,

  768. spend.

  769. And as a starting point,

  770. you want to be thinking

  771. very practically

  772. to be giving 10%

  773. of what God has given you,

  774. to be saving 10%

  775. of what God gives you,

  776. and to be spending 80%

  777. of what God gives you.

  778. Just as a starting point.

  779. And so it just gives you

  780. something to aim at.

  781. And so what I'd like to do now

  782. for the rest of our time

  783. is just kind of unpack

  784. these things.

  785. I'm going to spend

  786. the bulk of my time

  787. in the giving category,

  788. move to saving,

  789. and then if I've got some time,

  790. I'll talk about spending.

  791. Give your best

  792. to the Lord

  793. of your monthly income.

  794. 9-7,

  795. each one must give

  796. as he decided

  797. in his art.

  798. Each one of us

  799. is to be stewarding

  800. that which God entrusts to us.

  801. We're to give

  802. a portion of that

  803. back to the Lord.

  804. First fruits,

  805. the best.

  806. The first,

  807. the best.

  808. So the principle

  809. I want you to hear right now

  810. is when you give,

  811. don't give leftovers

  812. at the end of the month.

  813. Give the best

  814. at the beginning of the month.

  815. start there,

  816. and if you come up short,

  817. you're going to deal

  818. with that in your spending,

  819. not your giving.

  820. Decide how much.

  821. And the,

  822. under the Old Covenant,

  823. Old Covenant saints

  824. were commanded

  825. to give 10%

  826. of their monthly produce,

  827. of their monthly income.

  828. And when we get

  829. to the New Testament,

  830. the New Testament

  831. is rather silent

  832. on the tithe.

  833. And so,

  834. you really can't make

  835. this airtight argument

  836. either way

  837. for the tithe

  838. in the New Testament

  839. because it's pretty quiet on it.

  840. But I'm with Randy Alcorn.

  841. Randy Alcorn

  842. wrote this book,

  843. The Treasure Principle.

  844. I think we've got

  845. four copies still

  846. at the Connect Desk

  847. out there

  848. if you want this.

  849. It's outstanding.

  850. What Randy Alcorn does

  851. is he makes this case

  852. of using the tithe

  853. to help you give.

  854. Think of the tithe

  855. as training wheels

  856. on your giving bike.

  857. Just getting started.

  858. And it helps you

  859. in terms of aiming

  860. at something

  861. to be giving back

  862. to what God is giving you.

  863. Giving your best

  864. back to the Lord.

  865. And you know what?

  866. You're going to find this.

  867. Because

  868. riding your bike

  869. with training wheels

  870. is kind of fun.

  871. Riding your bike

  872. without training wheels

  873. is even better.

  874. And so,

  875. see those training wheels

  876. as to get you going.

  877. But you don't have to stay

  878. riding your bike

  879. with training wheels on

  880. if you're able.

  881. He makes this case,

  882. Randy Alcorn,

  883. when it comes to the tithe.

  884. The old covenant saints,

  885. well,

  886. they were commanded

  887. to give 10%.

  888. How much more

  889. should new covenant saints

  890. who know the grace

  891. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  892. give more?

  893. There's this study

  894. that was done.

  895. I came across it

  896. this past week

  897. getting ready.

  898. It's called

  899. The Giving Gap.

  900. Changes in Evangelical Generosity.

  901. It's really interesting.

  902. I just read

  903. the executive summary,

  904. which is 12

  905. kind of summary statements.

  906. And

  907. this is what

  908. the eighth summary statement is.

  909. Generosity is the proportion

  910. of household income

  911. given away.

  912. Now,

  913. this is all evangelicals

  914. in the American church

  915. over 2024.

  916. Think of it as a percentage

  917. of your annual income.

  918. The average donor gives

  919. Do you know how,

  920. do you know what the percentage is?

  921. The average donor gives

  922. blank of household income

  923. to the church annually.

  924. It's 2.8%.

  925. And that's down

  926. from 3.2%

  927. in 2021.

  928. It's interesting.

  929. It's like,

  930. okay,

  931. giving's good.

  932. We're giving something.

  933. But if you're going to

  934. talk about this

  935. in terms of

  936. giving sparingly

  937. versus giving abundantly,

  938. where would that fall?

  939. And where would that fall

  940. in terms of prioritizing

  941. your giving,

  942. giving your best

  943. to the Lord?

  944. It's a helpful

  945. assessment

  946. of where the American church

  947. is,

  948. the wealthiest church

  949. in the world.

  950. It's a helpful

  951. So maybe right now

  952. you're saying,

  953. 10%?

  954. We can never do that.

  955. How about this?

  956. How about

  957. asking the question,

  958. what can

  959. you do?

  960. Are you giving

  961. to begin with?

  962. And

  963. what's your next step

  964. in your giving?

  965. Can you start

  966. looking at

  967. what you spend

  968. and say,

  969. you know what,

  970. that's a want.

  971. We don't need that.

  972. Let's reassign

  973. that to

  974. that which is

  975. even more pleasing

  976. to the Lord.

  977. Are you giving at all?

  978. What's your next step?

  979. And see the 10%

  980. as training wheels

  981. to be

  982. getting going

  983. in your giving.

  984. And remember,

  985. Jesus became

  986. poor

  987. to make us

  988. rich

  989. so that

  990. we

  991. could

  992. sow

  993. abundantly

  994. so that

  995. more and more

  996. people

  997. would reap

  998. a praise

  999. harvest

  1000. to the Lord.

  1001. Finding their

  1002. treasure in

  1003. Jesus.

  1004. I was going to

  1005. talk about

  1006. frequency.

  1007. I'm going to

  1008. skip that.

  1009. Here are two

  1010. thoughts.

  1011. I was given

  1012. this book

  1013. by a brother

  1014. from the church

  1015. to read.

  1016. It's called

  1017. True Riches.

  1018. It's by

  1019. John Cortinez

  1020. and Gregory

  1021. Baumer.

  1022. It's a really

  1023. helpful book.

  1024. I'd recommend it.

  1025. I don't agree

  1026. with everything

  1027. in it.

  1028. But you know

  1029. what was

  1030. challenging

  1031. about this

  1032. book?

  1033. Here's what's

  1034. challenging

  1035. about this

  1036. book.

  1037. They raised

  1038. the question

  1039. of what do

  1040. you base

  1041. your lifestyle

  1042. on?

  1043. Do you base

  1044. your lifestyle

  1045. on your

  1046. income

  1047. or do you

  1048. base your

  1049. lifestyle

  1050. on your

  1051. giving?

  1052. It was a

  1053. very challenging

  1054. and provocative

  1055. question.

  1056. So it started

  1057. us re-evaluating

  1058. hey what do

  1059. we need

  1060. what do we

  1061. need to

  1062. live on

  1063. so that we

  1064. can free

  1065. up more

  1066. money to

  1067. give?

  1068. Because we

  1069. delight in

  1070. Jesus.

  1071. Another thought

  1072. is this.

  1073. It's about

  1074. progress.

  1075. It's about

  1076. growth.

  1077. Giving is an

  1078. act of grace.

  1079. 2 Corinthians

  1080. 8.

  1081. It's something

  1082. that God

  1083. is at work

  1084. in us

  1085. and we

  1086. respond to

  1087. and step

  1088. into

  1089. and experience

  1090. more and more

  1091. of his joy

  1092. so what's

  1093. your next

  1094. step?

  1095. What's

  1096. your next

  1097. step

  1098. individually?

  1099. What's

  1100. your next

  1101. step as

  1102. a family?

  1103. How can

  1104. you excel

  1105. still more

  1106. in this

  1107. act of

  1108. grace?

  1109. So

  1110. giving.

  1111. Give.

  1112. Give your

  1113. best to

  1114. the Lord.

  1115. Second

  1116. category is

  1117. save.

  1118. Saving

  1119. is putting

  1120. away money

  1121. and if

  1122. you're aiming

  1123. at 10%

  1124. aiming at

  1125. it.

  1126. Just like

  1127. giving,

  1128. you're aiming

  1129. at it,

  1130. you're moving

  1131. towards it.

  1132. That's

  1133. good.

  1134. It's just

  1135. important to

  1136. start.

  1137. Can I give

  1138. you a principle

  1139. from the

  1140. Proverbs

  1141. about saving?

  1142. This is

  1143. really helpful.

  1144. This is

  1145. Proverbs 13,

  1146. 11 and

  1147. it says

  1148. this,

  1149. wealth

  1150. gained

  1151. hastily

  1152. will

  1153. dwindle

  1154. but whoever

  1155. gathers

  1156. little by

  1157. little will

  1158. increase it.

  1159. Little by

  1160. little.

  1161. saving

  1162. little by

  1163. little.

  1164. So maybe

  1165. it's long

  1166. term saving

  1167. little by

  1168. little.

  1169. You're

  1170. saving,

  1171. you're putting

  1172. money away

  1173. for your

  1174. retirement or

  1175. you're building

  1176. up towards

  1177. a new car

  1178. to you that

  1179. you need to

  1180. purchase.

  1181. It's little by

  1182. little you're

  1183. putting away.

  1184. Or it's more

  1185. of a short

  1186. term 12 month

  1187. savings.

  1188. You're saying

  1189. okay you know

  1190. what we've got a

  1191. summer vacation

  1192. coming up and

  1193. so we're just

  1194. going to put a

  1195. little money

  1196. away little

  1197. bit by little

  1198. bit kind of

  1199. throughout the

  1200. year to be

  1201. ready for that

  1202. when it

  1203. comes or we

  1204. have a property

  1205. tax come and

  1206. due in December

  1207. and we're going

  1208. to put away

  1209. a little bit

  1210. little bit

  1211. little bit

  1212. and be ready

  1213. to pay that

  1214. property tax.

  1215. Christmas

  1216. we're trying to

  1217. save now put a

  1218. little way a

  1219. little way for

  1220. Christmas 2020

  1221. 25.

  1222. And so you're

  1223. just putting

  1224. money away

  1225. tucking away

  1226. a little little

  1227. by little for

  1228. different things

  1229. coming down the

  1230. line.

  1231. But when it

  1232. comes to saving

  1233. I want to give

  1234. you a category

  1235. that I think

  1236. you should

  1237. consider.

  1238. It's called

  1239. an emergency

  1240. fund.

  1241. And what an

  1242. emergency fund

  1243. is is something

  1244. you save

  1245. towards.

  1246. It's usually

  1247. about $1,000 to

  1248. $2,000.

  1249. And how to

  1250. think about it

  1251. is like a

  1252. red case with

  1253. glass that

  1254. says break in

  1255. case of

  1256. emergency.

  1257. And so this

  1258. money for your

  1259. emergency fund

  1260. would be something

  1261. like you have a

  1262. medical expense that

  1263. you weren't

  1264. planning for.

  1265. you break into

  1266. your emergency

  1267. fund.

  1268. Or you have a

  1269. house expense

  1270. something goes

  1271. big time on your

  1272. house and you

  1273. weren't ready for

  1274. it.

  1275. Emergency fund.

  1276. Something else

  1277. happens.

  1278. Car expense.

  1279. Or maybe you

  1280. have a brother

  1281. and sister that

  1282. is facing a

  1283. crisis.

  1284. Break into the

  1285. emergency fund.

  1286. What then you

  1287. do is you

  1288. rebuild the

  1289. emergency fund

  1290. after you use

  1291. it.

  1292. And what that

  1293. will do is

  1294. it will protect

  1295. your cash flow.

  1296. It will help

  1297. you if you're

  1298. living paycheck

  1299. by paycheck

  1300. and maybe you're

  1301. in a cycle of

  1302. debt to help

  1303. you get out of

  1304. a cycle of

  1305. debt.

  1306. When it

  1307. comes to

  1308. saving,

  1309. I just need

  1310. you to hear

  1311. this.

  1312. We don't

  1313. trust in our

  1314. savings.

  1315. savings.

  1316. We trust in

  1317. God's promises.

  1318. But we're

  1319. wise in doing

  1320. our savings.

  1321. The third

  1322. category of

  1323. kind of like

  1324. giving our

  1325. best to the

  1326. Lord is by

  1327. way of our

  1328. spending.

  1329. You know,

  1330. I gave you

  1331. the percentages.

  1332. Give 10%,

  1333. save 10%,

  1334. spend 80%.

  1335. You know,

  1336. you don't

  1337. have to

  1338. spend 80%

  1339. if you

  1340. don't want

  1341. to,

  1342. if you don't

  1343. have to.

  1344. You don't

  1345. have to do

  1346. that.

  1347. What has

  1348. been really

  1349. helpful for me

  1350. over the years

  1351. has been

  1352. thinking in

  1353. two categories,

  1354. what are my

  1355. needs and

  1356. what are my

  1357. wants?

  1358. Can I just

  1359. define for you

  1360. what a need

  1361. is?

  1362. A need

  1363. is something

  1364. that is

  1365. necessary for

  1366. you to

  1367. live.

  1368. It's food.

  1369. It's clothing.

  1370. It's shelter.

  1371. It's, you

  1372. can make a

  1373. case for

  1374. transportation.

  1375. I think you

  1376. can make a

  1377. case for a

  1378. phone to be

  1379. functional in

  1380. our culture.

  1381. And so,

  1382. when you start

  1383. realizing what

  1384. your needs

  1385. truly are and

  1386. then what are

  1387. your wants,

  1388. what is

  1389. unnecessary,

  1390. but good.

  1391. Helpful.

  1392. It gives

  1393. you a sense

  1394. of priority.

  1395. And so,

  1396. if you're

  1397. putting together

  1398. a budget,

  1399. which is

  1400. simply a tool

  1401. to help you

  1402. steward God's

  1403. funds,

  1404. the first

  1405. things that

  1406. you're going

  1407. to want to

  1408. spend on

  1409. are your

  1410. needs.

  1411. And then,

  1412. and then the

  1413. discretionary

  1414. spending are

  1415. your wants.

  1416. Very helpful

  1417. categories.

  1418. Now,

  1419. if you want

  1420. a helpful

  1421. exercise,

  1422. download your

  1423. monthly bank

  1424. statement and

  1425. look at all

  1426. of what you

  1427. have purchased

  1428. as you have

  1429. made and

  1430. right next to

  1431. each one in

  1432. N or a W.

  1433. This is a need,

  1434. this is a want.

  1435. It'll be

  1436. interesting to

  1437. see what you

  1438. find out.

  1439. Jenny and I,

  1440. neither of us

  1441. are money

  1442. managers.

  1443. Neither of us

  1444. are administrative

  1445. powerhouses.

  1446. services.

  1447. And the tool

  1448. that has helped

  1449. us grow us,

  1450. serve us in

  1451. our financial

  1452. stewardship is

  1453. called a cash

  1454. envelope system.

  1455. It's old school.

  1456. And what it is,

  1457. is we have this

  1458. little accordion

  1459. file with 12

  1460. slots.

  1461. And at the

  1462. beginning of

  1463. every month,

  1464. I go to the

  1465. bank and I get

  1466. cash out and I

  1467. put it in each

  1468. slot for groceries

  1469. and for

  1470. upcoming auto

  1471. maintenance and

  1472. for clothes and

  1473. for haircuts and

  1474. for other things

  1475. like that.

  1476. And for us,

  1477. this is just

  1478. where we live.

  1479. It helps us

  1480. because we

  1481. always see what

  1482. we have in a

  1483. category.

  1484. And when we're

  1485. out of it,

  1486. we're out of it.

  1487. And it has

  1488. served us as

  1489. we want to

  1490. give our best

  1491. to the Lord.

  1492. And if that's

  1493. where you are,

  1494. I would highly

  1495. recommend it.

  1496. It is a really

  1497. helpful tool.

  1498. And it can

  1499. function as an

  1500. emergency fund at

  1501. the same time.

  1502. Now, I know I

  1503. haven't talked

  1504. about debt.

  1505. I know I

  1506. haven't gone into

  1507. talking about

  1508. budgets.

  1509. Let me point you

  1510. to some resources

  1511. that can help you

  1512. without some

  1513. websites,

  1514. Crown Financial,

  1515. Dave Ramsey.

  1516. People are

  1517. different sides of

  1518. the fence with

  1519. Dave Ramsey,

  1520. but he offers

  1521. this course called

  1522. Financial Peace

  1523. University.

  1524. It will help

  1525. you.

  1526. Compass,

  1527. Compass

  1528. Finances

  1529. God's Way.

  1530. It's a good

  1531. organization to

  1532. help.

  1533. You can go to

  1534. any of those

  1535. websites to

  1536. get help here.

  1537. There's this

  1538. book,

  1539. a recommended

  1540. treasure principle.

  1541. There's true

  1542. riches.

  1543. But if you want

  1544. to talk to a

  1545. human being,

  1546. and you're

  1547. like,

  1548. we need help,

  1549. would you come

  1550. find me?

  1551. We can direct

  1552. you to someone

  1553. in our church

  1554. who can really

  1555. help you with

  1556. these kinds of

  1557. things.

  1558. things.

  1559. So when we

  1560. talk about

  1561. giving your

  1562. best to the

  1563. Lord,

  1564. three categories.

  1565. Give,

  1566. save,

  1567. spend.

  1568. What's your

  1569. next step?

  1570. To give your

  1571. best to the

  1572. Lord in your

  1573. actions.

  1574. Giving your

  1575. best to the

  1576. Lord is both

  1577. dealing with

  1578. posture and

  1579. practice,

  1580. kindness.

  1581. And every one

  1582. of us in the

  1583. room has room

  1584. to grow.

  1585. We all have

  1586. different income

  1587. levels in this

  1588. room, but what

  1589. will unite us in

  1590. our generosity as

  1591. we move forward

1592. is if each of us

  1593. is growing in

  1594. giving our best

  1595. to the Lord.

  1596. We can do that

  1597. together.

  1598. So,

  1599. if you receive a

  1600. 10,000 check in

  1601. the mail this

  1602. week from the

  1603. settlement of an

  1604. estate, what

  1605. would be

  1606. governing your

  1607. heart and your

  1608. actions?

  1609. I'd hope it be

  1610. at least this

  1611. question.

  1612. God is your

  1613. steward.

  1614. How can I

  1615. honor you best

  1616. in stewarding

  1617. this money?

  1618. Let's pray

  1619. together.

  1620. God in heaven,

  1621. we do thank you

  1622. so much for the

  1623. money you've

  1624. entrusted to us.

  1625. We want to be

  1626. delivered from the

  1627. love of money

  1628. day by day, and

  1629. the gospel does

  1630. just that.

  1631. It moves our

  1632. heart off of

  1633. money and moves

  1634. our heart onto

  1635. the treasure of

  1636. our soul,

  1637. Jesus.

  1638. Would you grow

  1639. us in our

  1640. attitudes and our

  1641. actions, our

  1642. postures and our

  1643. practice so that we

  1644. would excel still

  1645. more in this act

  1646. of grace.

  1647. It's in your name

  1648. we pray.

  1649. Amen.
