  1. And if y'all would open up your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 2, verses 5 through 18, it's on page 1188 of your Pew Bible.

    Hebrews 2:5–18

  2. If you're new to Christ the King Church, we typically preach expositional sermons, which means we are preaching through books at a time, and we've just started preaching through the book of Hebrews.

  3. Hear God's Word.

  4. Verse 5, chapter 2,

  5. For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.

  6. It has been testified somewhere,

  7. What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you care for him?

  8. You made him for a little while lower than the angels.

  9. You have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.

  10. Now, in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control.

  11. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him, but we see him, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death,

  12. so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

  13. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

  14. For he who sanctifies, and those who are being sanctified, those who are sanctified, all have one source.

  15. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying,

  16. I will tell of your name to my brothers.

  17. In the midst of the congregation, I will sing your praise.

  18. And again, I will put my trust in him.

  19. And again, behold, I and the children God has given me.

  20. Since, therefore, the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things,

  21. that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is the devil,

  22. and deliver all those who, through fear of death, were subject to lifelong slavery.

  23. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

  24. Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God,

  25. to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

  26. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

  27. Amen.

  28. Has anybody been to London?

  29. I see those hands.

  30. I have not.

  31. I want to be there.

  32. There is a lot of people in the tube, the subway system of London.

  33. There is tiled into the platform on the subway stations three words.

  34. Mind the gap.

  35. There's this gap between the platform station and the train that comes in.

  36. And it says mind the gap because you don't want to fall into the gap.

  37. You want to step onto the train.

  38. And so you have mind the gap.

  39. So say the Brits.

  40. I think Americans would say don't fall in.

  41. When it comes to the book of Hebrews, mind the gap means don't fall away.

  42. The book of Hebrews is one long exhortation to hold fast to Jesus.

  43. And we've got a gap to mind.

  44. It's not the gap in London subway stations.

  45. A little distance between a platform and a train.

  46. It's the gap of time between Christ's first coming and his second coming.

  47. His first coming, Jesus lived a sinless, perfect life.

  48. He died on the cross for our sins.

  49. He was raised from the dead, ascended on high.

  50. And now he is exalted at the right hand of God, seated on his throne, carrying out his purposes.

  51. That is his first coming.

  52. And his second coming is when he returns to make all things right as the judge of all.

  53. So we're living in between his first coming and his second coming.

  54. We're in a gap.

  55. We're living in the already but not yet.

  56. And when you're living in the gap, you can lose sight of things.

  57. Up until this point in the book of Hebrews, the author of Hebrews has been emphasizing that Jesus is totally God.

  58. His divine nature.

  59. He is the radiance of the glory of God.

  60. He is the exact imprint of his nature.

  61. And not only is he emphasizing the deity of Jesus, the Son, but he also aims us.

  62. He shows us where he is right now.

  63. He is, in verse chapter 1, verse 3, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.

  64. In verse 8, but of the Son, he says, your throne, O God, is forever and ever in heaven.

  65. Verse 13, surely at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.

  66. Not only is he God, he is exalted, reigning on high.

  67. But here we are.

  68. In between his first coming and his second coming.

  69. And even though he's on high and we know that.

  70. It doesn't feel like it sometimes, does it?

  71. When you're looking at this world and you're like, that's not subjected to his reign right now.

  72. That's not subjected to his reign right now.

  73. This world can be such an utter mess.

  74. And so here we are, living in the gap.

  75. We know he's on high, but things don't look like it.

  76. And that can give rise to some discouragement.

  77. Even start to subtly question, like, is this true?

  78. Is this worth it?

  79. Do we press on?

  80. How do we mind the gap?

  81. And this morning, in Hebrews 2, 5 through 18, we're given three ways to mind the gap.

  82. So that we don't drift, but draw near.

  83. We draw near to Jesus.

  84. We, first, we remember his cross and crown.

  85. Second, we remember that his suffering has made us his siblings.

  86. And third, we remember he helps us as our high priest.

  87. And when we mind these things, when we remember these things, we're minding the gap.

  88. And it protects us from drift and helps us to draw near to the one who tasted death for us.

  89. So let's look at these three ways we are to mind the gap.

  90. We're all living in the gap.

  91. In between his first coming and second coming.

  92. So we remember his cross and his crown.

  93. Up until this point, as I've mentioned, the emphasis has been on the divine nature of Jesus.

  94. That he's fully, fully God.

  95. And as totally God, he's enthroned on high right now.

  96. Exalted, surrounded by myriads of angels.

  97. Our brothers and sisters in the faith are with him in his presence.

  98. And the writer of Hebrews has been making the point that Jesus is God and exalted by comparing him to angels.

  99. And to showing us that he's superior to angels.

  100. And these extended quotations from the Old Testament, chapter 1.

  101. We're going to see more here in chapter 2.

  102. They're to show us that Jesus is greater.

  103. But in this chapter, the author not only helps us to see the divine nature of Jesus and his exaltation.

  104. He shows us the humanity of the Son.

  105. That he was fully man.

  106. And that he was humiliated.

  107. His humiliation.

  108. He suffered.

  109. He endured the cross.

  110. He died as a man.

  111. Who experienced everything that we experienced for 33 years, yet without sin.

  112. In verses 5 through 9, what we have is a quoting of Psalm 8.

  113. And then in verses, at the second half of 8 and into 9,

  114. you have the writer of Hebrews showing how Jesus has fulfilled Psalm 8.

  115. And what we're going to see is his cross and his crown.

  116. Psalm 8 is a psalm about God giving dominion to mankind in order for mankind to represent God on earth.

  117. To be fruitful and multiply.

  118. To be his vice regents.

  119. But we blew it.

  120. Instead of making it about God, we make it about ourselves.

  121. And so in steps Jesus as the perfect man.

  122. The ultimate representative of humanity.

  123. Because he's totally God and totally man.

  124. And so what we see in verse 7 from Psalm 8, we read this.

  125. You, God, made him for a little while lower than the angels.

  126. Psalm 8.

  127. Would you now look at verse 9?

  128. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus.

  129. Do you see what's going on there?

  130. Psalm 8 fulfilled in Jesus.

  131. How did Jesus fulfill that?

  132. How was he for a little while made lower than the angels?

  133. Jesus walked the earth for 33 years.

  134. The son of God took on human flesh.

  135. Merry Christmas.

  136. Happy incarnation.

  137. And he walked this planet for 33 years.

  138. Just a little while.

  139. Made lower than the angels.

  140. We're getting at the humanity of Jesus.

  141. His humiliation in the Philippians 2, 3 through 11 cents.

  142. He became a servant.

  143. He took on flesh.

  144. And he died.

  145. He suffered death.

  146. Because he was a human being.

  147. And his death isn't like our deaths.

  148. His death accomplished something.

  149. He tasted death for us.

  150. For everyone who's living in the gap who would believe.

  151. The death is a way of talking about the cross.

  152. Jesus endured the cross.

  153. Totally God.

  154. Totally man.

  155. Tasting death for us as fulfillment of Psalm 8 as our representative.

  156. The second half of verse 7 says,

  157. You have crowned him with glory and honor.

  158. And if you look at the rest of verse 9, it says,

  159. Namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death.

  160. So that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

  161. So not only was Jesus humiliated, became a man, suffered death, cross.

  162. He also, following the cross, was exalted.

  163. Raised to the right hand.

  164. Crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death for us.

  165. He had to experience his cross in order for him to be crowned king on high.

  166. It's his exaltation.

  167. So in this passage, in Psalm 8, we're seeing both his cross, humiliation, and his crown.

  168. His exaltation.

  169. He is totally God and totally man.

  170. It's necessary.

  171. He tasted death for us.

  172. And then comes the gap.

  173. Verse 8, we're Psalm 8.

  174. Putting everything in subjection under his feet.

  175. We now go into the explanation.

  176. The writer says,

  177. Now in putting everything in subjection to him,

  178. and I believe the him is Jesus in this passage, in this verse.

  179. He, God, the Father, left nothing outside his, the Son's, control.

  180. And at present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

  181. We're living in the gap.

  182. We're living in between his death, resurrection, ascension, and exalted crowning, and his return.

  183. It doesn't look like everything is subjection to him because it's not.

  184. But he is on high.

  185. So what do you do?

  186. When you're looking at this world and you just want to despair?

  187. Look at the end of verse 8.

  188. We do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

  189. When we see everything not in subjection to him, what do we do?

  190. Look at verse 9.

  191. We see him.

  192. We set our eyes on Jesus.

  193. We set our eyes on the cross and the crown of our king.

  194. And we realize that, hey, even though it may not feel like things are subjected to him, yet he is raining on high.

  195. And we are one day closer to when all things will be subjected to him.

  196. When his inaugurated reign culminates in fullness of peace on a new heavens and a new earth.

  197. So when we're living in the gap, you know how you mind the gap?

  198. You remember his cross and his crown.

  199. You see things for the way they are, but you remember he's exalted on high.

  200. Cross, suffer death, crown, exalted on high.

  201. Enthroned on high.

  202. Which brings us to the second way we mind the gap.

  203. We remember his suffering made us his siblings.

  204. This is an extraordinary passage.

  205. When you woke up this morning, were you thinking about what Jesus is speaking over you?

  206. You may not know it if you're watching CNN or Fox on a regular basis.

  207. But Jesus is at work right now in the gap.

  208. He's on his throne.

  209. He's carrying out his father's purposes and will.

  210. And when you are living in the gap and you're discouraged by what you see,

  211. you need to remember he suffered to make you his brother and his sister.

  212. In verse 10 we read this.

  213. This is verses 10 through 13.

  214. For it was fitting that he, God the Father, for whom and by whom all things exist,

  215. in bringing many sons to glory, bringing many sinners into salvation,

  216. should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

  217. It was God's Father's will that God the Son would suffer to make us sons and daughters.

  218. It's extraordinary.

  219. Now you might be reading that and you're like,

  220. hold on a second, Pastor Mike.

  221. Should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

  222. Time out.

  223. Time out.

  224. I thought Jesus was perfect.

  225. I thought that Jesus was morally perfect in character and conduct 24-7,

  226. 365 days a year for his 33 years.

  227. That little while he lived lower than the angels.

  228. I thought he was perfect.

  229. I thought he satisfied God's commands fully in the life he lived.

  230. And he did.

  231. He did.

  232. Every thought, every word, every feeling, every act,

  233. fully pleasing to God all the time.

  234. He was on the planet.

  235. Still is now.

  236. So what is being talked about here?

  237. If it's not his character, what are we talking about?

  238. We're talking about his mission.

  239. We're talking about his founding of salvation.

  240. His accomplishing of our salvation.

  241. In order for him to accomplish our salvation,

  242. as the founder of our salvation,

  243. he needed to suffer.

  244. In order for him to suffer,

  245. he needed to be fully human.

  246. He had to die.

  247. He had to suffer death.

  248. He had to taste death for everyone who would believe in him.

  249. It was only through the suffering of the Son

  250. that God would bring many sons to glory.

  251. He would bring many sons.

  252. He would gather many sinners

  253. and adopt them into the family of faith.

  254. Jesus had to suffer.

  255. That's why in verse 11 we read,

  256. for he who sanctifies,

  257. Jesus,

  258. and those who are sanctified,

  259. us,

  260. all have one source,

  261. God the Father.

  262. It's his will.

  263. We all share one heavenly Father.

  264. We are one family.

  265. Jesus suffered to make us his siblings.

  266. And so when Jesus says this,

  267. verse 11,

  268. that's why he's not ashamed to call them brothers.

  269. The author of Hebrews is talking about Jesus

  270. and the way he thinks about you and me.

  271. He's not ashamed to call you brother and sister.

  272. It's amazing.

  273. It's an understatement.

  274. Intentionally.

  275. He delights in calling you brother and sister

  276. because of what he's done for you

  277. to make you his brother and sister.

  278. For the joy set before him,

  279. he endured the cross

  280. and that joy being gathering

  281. and bringing in the sons of glory

  282. in restoration and reconciliation

  283. to the Father,

  284. our salvation.

  285. He delights in what his death has accomplished.

  286. I don't know what you were thinking

  287. when he woke up this morning.

  288. I don't know what you were thinking.

  289. What happens if you wake up tomorrow morning

  290. and the first thought that comes to your mind

  291. is that the son who suffered cross

  292. and was exalted crown,

  293. he's not ashamed of you.

  294. He delights in you.

  295. In order to make that point,

  296. the writer of Hebrews then quotes

  297. two Old Testament passages.

  298. And what's extraordinary about these two

  299. Old Testament passages

  300. is that the writer of Hebrews,

  301. he puts them in the mouth of Jesus.

  302. speaking of you and me.

  303. Look at verse 11 again.

  304. That is why he's not ashamed

  305. to call them brothers,

  306. saying,

  307. so the author of Hebrews is saying,

  308. it's like what he's about to say

  309. is Jesus speaking of you and me.

  310. And the first thing he says

  311. is a quote from Psalm 22, 22.

  312. And you know Psalm 22

  313. because when Jesus was on the cross

  314. and when he cried out,

  315. my God, my God,

  316. why have you forsaken me?

  317. That's Psalm 22, 1.

  318. And Psalm 22, 1 through 21

  319. is a psalm about a righteous man

  320. suffering for God.

  321. And then in verse 22,

  322. the psalm pivots

  323. and it goes from humiliation

  324. to exaltation and vindication.

  325. And it's in verse 22

  326. that the writer of Hebrews

  327. puts it in the mouth of Jesus

  328. about you and me.

  329. Jesus is the I.

  330. I will tell of your,

  331. God the Father,

  332. your name to my brothers,

  333. us.

  334. In the midst of the congregation,

  335. I will sing your praise.

  336. The congregation is the heavenly gathering

  337. of God's blood bought.

  338. But it's Hebrews 12, 22 through 24.

  339. Right now, Jesus is in heaven

  340. and he's boasting of what he's done

  341. and saying,

  342. God the Father,

  343. I told your name to my brothers and sisters

  344. who are all around our throne right now.

  345. It's delight.

  346. It's joy.

  347. It's not ashamed of you.

  348. It's amazing that he's saying this.

  349. I was convinced that

  350. many of you needed to hear that this morning.

  351. He's not ashamed of you.

  352. In the heavenly congregation,

  353. he's delighting in you.

  354. What he's done for you

  355. to bring you to glory.

  356. It doesn't stop there.

  357. Because then we have another quote

  358. from Isaiah chapter 8,

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  359. 17 and 18.

  360. Again, the writer of Hebrews

  361. is putting these words in the mouth of Jesus.

  362. Jesus is fulfilling these.

  363. And he says,

  364. I, Jesus, will put my trust in him.

  365. Isaiah 8,

  366. Isaiah's been experiencing some hardship

  367. and he is saying,

  368. I will put my trust in him

  369. and all these children that you've given me.

  370. We're going to put our trust in you too.

  371. And now,

  372. the writer of Hebrews

  373. is saying,

  374. Jesus is speaking that

  375. in fulfillment regarding us.

  376. Remember when Jesus

  377. was in the Garden of Gethsemane

  378. and he says,

  379. not my will,

  380. but your will be done.

  381. In the midst of suffering,

  382. he put his trust in his Father.

  383. That's what he's saying.

  384. That's what he's getting at.

  385. Jesus suffered faithfully

  386. to make you sons and daughters unto glory.

  387. And then again,

  388. he says,

  389. behold, I and the children

  390. God has given me.

  391. He's saying that of us.

  392. He's saying,

  393. I trust God

  394. and these brothers and sisters

  395. that I tasted death for,

  396. they are going to trust you too.

  397. We're all going to trust you.

  398. Do you know this is a picture of

  399. solidarity.

  400. His suffering has made us

  401. his siblings

  402. and we're not going to drift away

  403. in the gap.

  404. We're going to draw near

  405. and hold fast

  406. and stand firm in the gap.

  407. at the risk of diminishing

  408. the significance of this.

  409. Remember that movie,

  410. High School Musical?

  411. Zac Efron at the end

  412. with his dynamic white outfit.

  413. We're all in this together.

  414. That's what this is getting at.

  415. We're all in this together

  416. because Christ's suffering

  417. as a man

  418. has made us his siblings.

  419. He's not ashamed of you.

  420. Not ashamed.

  421. So when you're in the gap

  422. and you're seeing this world

  423. yet to be subjected to him

  424. and you may just start thinking

  425. maybe it's time to check out.

  426. Maybe just to find an easier way.

  427. Nobody really needs to know

  428. that I'm a follower of Jesus.

  429. Remember,

  430. his suffering has made you his siblings.

  431. He was faithful in his sufferings

  432. and so we must be faithful

  433. in our sufferings

  434. for him in the gap.

  435. We're all in this together.

  436. He's not ashamed of you.

  437. He shed his blood

  438. to unite you to himself

  439. under God.

  440. Now imagine waking up tomorrow morning

  441. and the first thought

  442. that comes into your mind

  443. is that Jesus is not ashamed

  444. to call you brother,

  445. sister.

  446. It's just another way of saying

  447. I am for you

  448. all the way to the end.

  449. The third way

  450. in which we mind the gap

  451. is that verses 14 through 18

  452. we remember his help

  453. as our high priest.

  454. He's willing to help.

  455. Living in the gap

  456. in between his first coming

  457. and his second coming,

  458. that's not easy.

  459. We have a lot of needs.

  460. He's got a lot of help.

  461. He's able to help.

  462. He is willing to help.

  463. Look at all the help.

  464. Verse 16,

  465. for surely it's not angels

  466. that he helps

  467. but he helps the offspring

  468. of Abraham.

  469. Look at verse 18.

  470. At the end,

  471. he is able to help

  472. those who are being tempted.

  473. He offers help.

  474. There's two ways

  475. in this passage

  476. in which

  477. he helps us.

  478. In the face of death

  479. and in the face of temptation.

  480. He is our help

  481. in the face of death.

  482. Verses 14 through 16.

  483. In verse 14,

  484. we have again

  485. this teaching

  486. that the son

  487. was completely human

  488. in all that he was

  489. yet without sin.

  490. Verse 14,

  491. since therefore

  492. the children share

  493. in the flesh and blood,

  494. he himself likewise

  495. partook of the same things.

  496. Jesus took on flesh

  497. and blood

  498. because the people

  499. he needed to bring

  500. to God in glory

  501. were made of flesh

  502. and blood.

  503. But we get afraid

  504. of death.

  505. We're afraid

  506. of our deaths.

  507. We're afraid

  508. of other people's deaths.

  509. Part of living

  510. in the gap

  511. in between

  512. his first coming

  513. and second coming

  514. is all this death.

  515. It can wreak havoc

  516. in people's lives.

  517. And Jesus

  518. tasted death

  519. for us.

  520. In fact,

  521. the death he died

  522. puts death

  523. to death.

  524. Let me help you

  525. see that.

  526. That through death,

  527. verse 14,

  528. he might destroy,

  529. better yet,

  530. dethrone

  531. the one who has

  532. the power of death

  533. that is the devil.

  534. The devil,

  535. the enemy

  536. of our souls,

  537. who is not

  538. God's equal.

  539. Well,

  540. he exercises

  541. his power

  542. over death

  543. through deception

  544. and lies.

  545. The condemning

  546. power of death

  547. is sin.

  548. It's the sting

  549. of death,

  550. 1 Corinthians 15,

  551. 56.

  552. And so what

  553. the devil loves

  554. to do

  555. is to accuse

  556. people

  557. of their

  558. sinfulness

  559. in order

  560. to rub

  561. your face

  562. in your death.

  563. But the death

  564. that Jesus died

  565. killed sin.

  566. It removes

  567. sin.

  568. He dethrones

  569. the devil

  570. and the devil's

  571. power

  572. to make

  573. false accusations

  574. about your sin

  575. freeing you

  576. from death.

  577. Jesus dethroned

  578. the devil

  579. by removing

  580. sin.

  581. His death

  582. was propitious.

  583. The death

  584. that Jesus died,

  585. the death

  586. that Jesus

  587. tasted for

  588. everyone who

  589. believed,

  590. bore all of

  591. God's wrath,

  592. all of it,

  593. for all of your

  594. sin,

  595. so that there

  596. was no more

  597. wrath and you're

  598. completely forgiven

  599. of your sin.

  600. So Jesus,

  601. through his death,

  602. removes this

  603. thing of death

  604. which is sin

  605. and he totally

  606. dethrones the

  607. devil in doing

  608. so.

  609. We learn in Mark

  610. 3 as well

  611. that Jesus,

  612. speaking of the

  613. devil,

  614. Jesus describes

  615. him as a

  616. strong man

  617. and he has

  618. come to bind

  619. the strong man

  620. and plunder

  621. his house.

  622. Jesus is the

  623. great redemptive

  624. plunderer,

  625. you and me,

  626. bringing sons to

  627. glory.

  628. He came for us.

  629. Revelation 13,

  630. the devil is

  631. kicked out of

  632. heaven,

  633. down to the

  634. earth,

  635. where he is

  636. now,

  637. awaiting the

  638. second death.

  639. death,

  640. we know the

  641. truth of the

  642. devil.

  643. He's been

  644. dethroned by

  645. the death of

  646. Jesus and

  647. therefore we've

  648. been delivered

  649. from the fear

  650. of death.

  651. We no longer

  652. live,

  653. Christian,

  654. Christian,

  655. you no longer

  656. need to live in

  657. fear of death.

  658. The sting has

  659. been removed.

  660. John Bunyan

  661. talks about

  662. death,

  663. pictures it in

  664. the pilgrim's

  665. progress as a

  666. final river that

  667. must be crossed

  668. and you will feel

  669. it go up above

  670. your head.

  671. and then

  672. instantaneously

  673. you will be at

  674. the gates of

  675. glory.

  676. Death doesn't

  677. have the final

  678. say.

  679. Jesus does.

  680. He holds the

  681. keys to death,

  682. Revelation 1.

  683. He's the one who

  684. said,

  685. I am the

  686. resurrection and

  687. life.

  688. Whoever dies,

  689. yet shall he

  690. live if he

  691. believes in me.

  692. He's dethroned

  693. the devil.

  694. He's delivered us

  695. from the fear

  696. of death.

  697. Christ's death

  698. has defeated

  699. death.

  700. Can I have an

  701. amen?

  702. Well, there's

  703. another way he

  704. helps.

  705. He helps us in

  706. the face of

  707. temptation,

  708. verses 17

  709. through 18.

  710. He's able to

  711. help those who

  712. are being

  713. tempted,

  714. verse 18.

  715. And it begs

  716. the question,

  717. tempted to

  718. what?

  719. What kind of

  720. temptation?

  721. It could be the

  722. temptation to fear

  723. death,

  724. but I think the

  725. better explanation

  726. is something that

  727. he's just talked to

  728. us about in

  729. Hebrews 2,

  730. 1 through 4.

  731. to not drift.

  732. The temptation

  733. is to drift,

  734. to fall into

  735. the gap,

  736. to be

  737. kind of

  738. as an

  739. exercise of

  740. unbelief in

  741. Jesus,

  742. just to check

  743. out and fall

  744. away.

  745. That's the

  746. temptation.

  747. temptation.

  748. And he can

  749. help us when

  750. tempted that

  751. way.

  752. And I'm

  753. guessing everyone

  754. in the room,

  755. when you look at

  756. this messed up

  757. world, despite

  758. all of its beauty

  759. from time to

  760. time, you can

  761. be discouraged.

  762. We have help

  763. in time of

  764. need.

  765. In verse 17,

  766. again, we have

  767. another reference

  768. to the Jesus

  769. taking on

  770. humanity.

  771. Therefore, he

  772. had to be made

  773. like his

  774. brothers in

  775. every respect,

  776. every respect,

  777. yet without sin.

  778. Fully human.

  779. Totally God,

  780. totally man,

  781. in one person.

  782. And that

  783. uniquely qualifies

  784. him to be our

  785. high priest.

  786. This is the

  787. first time in

  788. the book of

  789. Hebrews that

  790. the writer of

  791. Hebrews drops

  792. high priest

  793. language.

  794. It's going to

  795. show up 17

  796. times in the

  797. book.

  798. It is the

  799. unique contribution

  800. of this book

  801. of Hebrews

  802. to the entire

  803. New Testament

  804. canon.

  805. No other

  806. writer in the

  807. New Testament

  808. talks about

  809. Jesus as our

  810. high priest.

  811. It's only the

  812. writer of Hebrews

  813. and it is

  814. glorious.

  815. A high priest

  816. is a go-between.

  817. A go-between God

  818. and a go-between

  819. man.

  820. And the high

  821. priests of old

  822. were sinners.

  823. And so they

  824. had to make

  825. sacrifice for

  826. themselves before

  827. they could make

  828. sacrifice for

  829. men.

  830. Not Jesus,

  831. not the Son,

  832. who's totally

  833. God and totally

  834. man.

  835. He is the

  836. perfect high

  837. priest because

  838. he's totally

  839. God and

  840. totally man.

  841. It's amazing.

  842. He's our

  843. great high

  844. priest.

  845. And because

  846. he's our

  847. great high

  848. priest, he

  849. made propitiation

  850. for the sins

  851. of us as

  852. people.

  853. Not only is

  854. he the

  855. living,

  856. exalted

  857. high priest,

  858. he himself

  859. was also

  860. the once

  861. and for

  862. all

  863. sacrifice

  864. for our

  865. sins.

  866. Cross,

  867. crown.

  868. That one-time

  869. sacrifice that

  870. our high

  871. priest made

  872. satisfied all

  873. of God's

  874. wrath for

  875. your sin.

  876. So that there

  877. was no more

  878. been forgiven

  879. in full.

  880. he's not

  881. ashamed to

  882. call you

  883. brothers,

  884. sisters.

  885. He gave his

  886. life for you.

  887. And you know

  888. what?

  889. He gets us.

  890. We have a

  891. high priest who

  892. gets us.

  893. Verse 18,

  894. for because he

  895. himself has

  896. suffered when

  897. tempted.

  898. He gets us.

  899. For 33 years,

  900. he lived on this

  901. planet and

  902. experienced everything

  903. that we experience

  904. yet without sin.

  905. He gets us.

  906. He gets us.

  907. And that's why

  908. he's so effective

  909. at helping us

  910. even when we're

  911. being tempted

  912. to drift

  913. in the gap.

  914. what do we do?

  915. What do you do

  916. when you realize

  917. I'm being tempted

  918. right now?

  919. Either I'm

  920. living in fear

  921. of my own death

  922. or the death

  923. of somebody else

  924. or I'm just

  925. wondering if this

  926. whole thing is

  927. worth it.

  928. What do you do?

  929. You go to the

  930. one who can

  931. help.

  932. You don't

  933. turn from

  934. Jesus in

  935. those moments.

  936. You don't

  937. drift from

  938. him.

  939. You turn

  940. to Jesus

  941. in those

  942. moments

  943. and you

  944. draw near

  945. to him

  946. in those

  947. moments.

  948. That's

  949. where you

  950. will find

  951. help.

  952. In the

  953. very one

  954. that you're

  955. wondering

  956. is worth

  957. it,

  958. you turn

  959. to him

  960. and you're

  961. just honest.

  962. Oh God,

  963. I'm

  964. fearing my

  965. death today.

  966. Oh God,

  967. I'm

  968. wondering if

  969. I should

  970. just operate

  971. an excavator

  972. for the rest

  973. of my

  974. life.

  975. He

  976. turned

  977. to Jesus.

  978. If you

  979. would just

  980. let your

  981. eyes scroll

  982. over to

  983. chapter 4

  984. verses 15

  985. and 16.

  986. For we

  987. do not

  988. have a

  989. high priest

  990. who is

  991. unable to

  992. sympathize

  993. with our

  994. weaknesses

  995. but one

  996. who in

  997. every

  998. respect

  999. has been

  1000. tempted

  1001. as we

  1002. are

  1003. yet

  1004. without

  1005. sin

  1006. let us

  1007. then

  1008. with

  1009. confidence

  1010. propitiation

  1011. draw near

  1012. to the

  1013. throne

  1014. of grace

  1015. that we

  1016. may receive

  1017. mercy

  1018. and find

  1019. grace

  1020. to help

  1021. in time

  1022. between

  1023. his first

  1024. coming

  1025. and his

  1026. second

  1027. coming

  1028. when things

  1029. don't look

  1030. subjected

  1031. to him.

  1032. Time of

  1033. need.

  1034. Be honest

  1035. with him

  1036. brother.

  1037. Be honest

  1038. with him

  1039. sister.

  1040. He's not

  1041. ashamed

  1042. of you.

  1043. We're

  1044. living in

  1045. between the

  1046. first coming

  1047. and the

  1048. second coming

  1049. of Jesus.

  1050. We know

  1051. all things

  1052. have been

  1053. subjected

  1054. to him

  1055. but it

  1056. doesn't look

  1057. like it.

  1058. It doesn't

  1059. feel like

  1060. it.

  1061. We've got

  1062. to mind

  1063. the gap.

  1064. in order

  1065. to

  1066. mind

  1067. the gap

  1068. and avoid

  1069. drift

  1070. and avoid

  1071. falling

  1072. away

  1073. into

  1074. the gap

  1075. we look

  1076. to Jesus.

  1077. We remember

  1078. his cross

  1079. and his crown

  1080. we remember

  1081. his suffering

  1082. made us

  1083. his siblings

  1084. and we

  1085. remember

  1086. his help

  1087. as our

  1088. high priest

  1089. all throughout

  1090. this passage

  1091. in each section

  1092. there's a

  1093. suffering

  1094. reference.

  1095. death.

  1096. And the

  1097. only way

  1098. he could

  1099. suffer death

  1100. was by

  1101. being fully

  1102. human.

  1103. And so

  1104. we mind

  1105. the gap

  1106. by remembering

  1107. that Jesus

  1108. is totally

  1109. God

  1110. totally man

  1111. he is

  1112. on his

  1113. throne

  1114. and we

  1115. are one

  1116. day closer

  1117. to him

  1118. bringing

  1119. all things

  1120. together.

  1121. what a

  1122. savior

  1123. what a

  1124. king

  1125. what a

  1126. high

  1127. priest

  1128. what a

  1129. hope

  1130. let's

  1131. pray.

  1132. Thank you

  1133. Jesus

  1134. for becoming

  1135. a man

  1136. for

  1137. suffering

  1138. the way

  1139. you did

  1140. for us.

  1141. Thank you

  1142. for enduring

  1143. the cross

  1144. to make

  1145. us your

  1146. brothers and

  1147. sisters

  1148. to bring

  1149. many sons

  1150. and daughters

  1151. to glory.

  1152. Thank you

  1153. God that

  1154. you have

  1155. not left

  1156. us in the

  1157. gap by

  1158. ourselves

  1159. but the

  1160. Holy Spirit

  1161. is with us

  1162. drawing our

  1163. gaze to

  1164. Jesus again

  1165. and again.

  1166. Lord Jesus

  1167. thank you so

  1168. much for

  1169. being our

  1170. living help

  1171. in time of

  1172. need and we

  1173. know it.

  1174. God

  1175. would you

  1176. unite us?

  1177. would you

  1178. bring solidarity

  1179. to us

  1180. among us

  1181. around

  1182. our

  1183. crucified

  1184. and

  1185. exalted

  1186. king

  1187. Jesus

  1188. and that

  1189. we would

  1190. hold fast

  1191. to him

  1192. all the way

  1193. to the

  1194. end

  1195. because you

  1196. are so

  1197. worthy.

  1198. it's in

  1199. your name

  1200. we pray

  1201. Jesus

  1202. amen.

  1203. Amen.
