  1. Amen. You may be seated. Kids, you can be excused to your King's Kids class.

  2. And if you would open up, I would ask that everybody open up their pew Bible

  3. because there's something I want you to see in an actual Bible this morning to Hebrews chapter 3.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  4. I'm going to be preaching on an extended section, but it's on 1188 and 189 of your Bibles.

  5. But before I get to preaching, I just want to say, Jenny and I had a great time last weekend

  6. at the Weekend to Remember in Madison. And so we are grateful for the time to refresh our marriage.

  7. One of our favorite parts was seeing John and Terry Tipman in their element, serving people.

  8. We got the sense that God was significantly at work in many people's lives.

  9. And if you're wondering what a weekend to remember is, I would just point you to the Tipmans.

  10. Would you guys raise your hands?

  11. It is designed to help husbands and wives who are getting married or are married.

  12. It's an enriching. There's a couple in our area. They're about to happen. It's not too late.

  13. Now to Hebrews chapter 3. I'm going to read this extended section.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  14. It's one unit. It's one argument. So 3.7 through 4.13.

  15. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

  16. Take care, brothers, sisters.

  17. Lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

  18. But exhort one another every day, as long as it's called today, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  19. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

  20. As it is said, today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.

  21. For who were those who heard and yet rebelled?

  22. Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?

  23. And with whom was he provoked for forty years?

  24. Was it not those who had sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

  25. And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

  26. So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

  27. Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear, lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it.

  28. For good news came to us just as to them.

  29. But the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

  30. For we have believed, enter that rest.

  31. As he has said, as I swore my wrath, they will not enter my rest.

  32. Although his works were finished from the foundation of the world, for he has said, he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way,

  33. and God rested on the seventh day from all his works.

  34. And again, in this passage, he said, they shall not enter my rest.

  35. Since therefore, it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience.

  36. Again, he appoints a certain day today, saying through David, so long afterward, and the words already quoted,

  37. today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.

  38. For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.

  39. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

  40. For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his work as God did from his.

  41. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  42. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,

  43. piercing to the division of soul and spirit of joints and marrow,

  44. and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  45. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.

  46. May God bless the reading of his word.

  47. Every Saturday in Kenosha at 10.30 a.m. on the nose,

  48. there's the testing of the severe weather warning system.

  49. Sirens blare.

  50. You can't miss it.

  51. In fact, those sirens are tested every Saturday in order to tune your ear,

  52. so that when July rolls around,

  53. and we have some of these big thunderstorms come in,

  54. or tornado watch warning,

  55. when those sirens blare,

  56. not only do you hear them, but you heed them.

  57. You take shelter.

  58. If you don't,

  59. you're in danger.

  60. Now, there's a danger being spoken about in this passage,

  61. this extended passage.

  62. It's the danger of a hardened heart.

  63. A hardened heart is a heart that doesn't care about God.

  64. A hardened heart hears God's word,

  65. and God's word just bounce off.

  66. It's a very dangerous place to be.

  67. And what this passage is,

  68. is its own warning.

  69. The book of Hebrews is one long exhortation to hold fast to Jesus Christ all the way to the end.

  70. In Hebrews, the book contains five warning passages.

  71. And this morning, we're looking at the second warning passage.

  72. The first was in chapter, at the beginning of chapter 2.

  73. It's not a blaring siren.

  74. It's the Holy Spirit speaking.

  75. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.

  76. When you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.

  77. If you chronically, habitually harden your heart to God speaking,

  78. you're like the wilderness generation of Israel,

  79. who left Egypt but did not enter God's promised rest because of their hardened hearts.

  80. No.

  81. What we're being called to hear is not to harden our hearts,

  82. but to open our hearts.

  83. To let God's word penetrate our hearts

  84. so that we can strive all the way to the end

  85. into God's promised rest.

  86. His full, final, and forever rest.

  87. And so what I want you to help you to see,

  88. I'm going to walk through,

  89. is this one extended passage has four alarms in it.

  90. It's a four-alarm warning.

  91. First alarm is the quote in Psalm 95.

  92. The second alarm is an unbelief alarm.

  93. The third alarm is a no-entry alarm.

  94. And the fourth alarm is a judgment alarm.

  95. So today, if you hear God speaking,

  96. don't harden your hearts.

  97. Open your hearts.

  98. Let God's word do God's work.

  99. So let's look at this first alarm.

  100. The Psalm 95 alarm.

  101. And this is in chapter 3, verse 7 through 11.

  102. And there's a few things I want you to notice.

  103. The first one is this.

  104. If you just look at the layout in your open Bible, Pew Bible,

  105. you're going to notice something.

  106. And so you're going to notice that verses 7 through 11 are indented.

  107. And then you see they're indented quotes.

  108. And then you'll see another series of indented quotes in verse 15,

  109. in verse 4, verse 3, and 4, verse 5, and 4, verse 7.

  110. And they're all references back to this original quote from Psalm 95.

  111. So you have these quotes that are indented,

  112. and then you're followed by blocks of words.

  113. And you know what's going on?

  114. The writer of Hebrews is taking Psalm 95, 7 through 11,

  115. and he is expositing it to the original hearers.

  116. He's explaining and applying it to them.

  117. So what I want you to see is the nature of this is pretty elegant.

  118. This is a written exposition of a section from Psalm 95.

  119. The next thing I want you to notice is the location of this warning,

  120. the context of it.

  121. If you look at 3.6, where Les was preaching last week, we read this,

  122. but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son, and we are his house.

  123. If indeed we hold fast, our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

  124. So Jesus Christ, superior to Moses, hold fast to him.

  125. That's 3.6.

  126. And then I'll look at 4.14.

  127. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,

  128. Jesus, the Son of God.

  129. Let us hold fast our confession.

  130. And so this extended kind of exposition of Psalm 95 is a warning

  131. in between a call to hold fast to Jesus in 3.6

  132. and a call to hold fast to Jesus in 4.14.

  133. Do you see it?

  134. Which means that this is a warning passage.

  135. What will keep you from holding fast to Jesus all the way to the end?

  136. Now that sheds light on why the author chose Psalm 95, 7 through 11.

  137. It's a warning.

  138. It's a warning.

  139. It's a warning.

  140. Psalm 95 was originally written by David.

  141. And what David is doing, this is a thousand years before Christ.

  142. And David wrote Psalm 95.

  143. It starts with this call to worship and ends with a warning.

  144. And what he's doing in the warning in verses 7 through 11 is he's taking that warning

  145. and he's writing the warning actually to David's generation.

  146. But he's looking back on the wilderness generation hundreds of years before.

  147. The wilderness generation that came out of Egypt but didn't make it to the promised land.

  148. And David is writing this to warn his generation of the failure of that generation.

  149. You following?

  150. And so what the writer of Hebrews is doing is he's taking David's warning to his people

  151. about that generation and now he's using that same thing to warn his generation.

  152. And here we are in the 21st century taking that same warning and applying it to us.

  153. We've got four generations of God's people here.

  154. What happened in the wilderness in verse 8?

  155. Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion on the day of testing in the wilderness.

  156. What was the failure?

  157. What happened?

  158. Well, if you turn back into Psalm 95 in your Old Testament,

  159. you will see that there's actually two places named in Psalm 95 8.

  160. Massa and Meribah.

  161. There's an event that happened, Numbers 20 at Massa.

  162. There's an event that happened in Exodus 17 at Meribah.

  163. In both situations, Israel started to grumble and complain because they were in the wilderness

  164. and they were like, we just want something to drink.

  165. Oh, Moses, you take us off.

  166. We want to be back in Egypt.

  167. Start getting really mad.

  168. They get fighting.

  169. God eventually provides water from them in God's gracious fashion.

  170. But you know what gets revealed about Israel?

  171. They're grumblers.

  172. It's a mark of unbelief, of disobedience.

  173. In Numbers 13 and 14, do you remember this story where the spies are sent out into Canaan

  174. to check out the land?

  175. And so Joshua and Caleb were part of that group, guys.

  176. They go out.

  177. They check it out.

  178. They come back.

  179. They bring back a cluster of grapes.

  180. And Joshua and Caleb are like, let's do it.

  181. Let's trust God.

  182. Let's go in.

  183. But everybody else is like, oh, the people of Canaan, they're just too big.

  184. We can't handle them.

  185. We can't do this.

  186. And they respond in fear, which is another outworking of unbelief.

  187. And God, it provoked God.

  188. And he said, I will swear in my wrath that this people will not enter my promised land,

  189. my promised rest.

  190. For 40 years, they provoked him like this.

  191. And what it is, it's an example of habitual, settled unbelief.

  192. And because of that, God did not allow them into his promised rest of that land.

  193. So David has picked this note.

  194. So the writer of Hebrews has picked Psalm 95 in order to warn his people,

  195. the original audience, of what will happen if there's chronic habitual unbelief among them.

  196. God will not allow them into his rest.

  197. It's an alarm.

  198. It's like a check engine light in your car.

  199. Psalm 95 is blinking, 7 through 11.

  200. And the question is this morning, are you going to pay attention to it?

  201. Are you going to allow Psalm 95 to do its work in your heart?

  202. Are you going to allow it to penetrate you?

  203. Or is it just going to bounce off you?

  204. In fact, Psalm 95, 7 through 11 was not only alarm to David's generation,

  205. and then to the original audience of Hebrews,

  206. but it's meant to be alarm for us.

  207. To say, okay, let's heed these words.

  208. Let's not harden our hearts.

  209. Let's open our hearts.

  210. And did you notice?

  211. That it's the Holy Spirit who's saying this in verse 7?

  212. The second alarm is the unbelief alarm.

  213. And that's in verses 12 through 19 of chapter 3.

  214. And the writer begins explaining and applying Psalm 95, 7 through 11 to his original audience.

  215. And there's a couple things about this that I want you to notice.

  216. There's a warning.

  217. In verse 12, it says,

  218. Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart,

  219. leading you to fall away from the living God.

  220. Technically, that take care,

  221. technically, it's watch out.

  222. Now, keep your eyes open.

  223. Watch out, brothers and sisters.

  224. Lest there be in any of you an evil and unbelieving heart.

  225. Now, biblically speaking, the heart was the center,

  226. the controlling center of a person's life.

  227. It was the seat of their thinking, of their feeling, of their will.

  228. And so whatever reigned supreme in one's heart,

  229. that controlled your life.

  230. And so if you can imagine evil or unbelief kind of reigning in your heart,

  231. it's controlling your life.

  232. And so the writer of Hebrews is saying,

  233. Hey, remember that Psalm of David and the warning that he gave

  234. because of the wilderness generation?

  235. Take it to heart.

  236. Let there not be evil, habitual evil.

  237. It's chronically setting your heart on the very things that grieves God

  238. and provokes him to wrath.

  239. Watch out for an unbelieving heart.

  240. The Greek word for that literally translates into apostasy.

  241. Unbelief.

  242. It's not a season of doubt or questioning.

  243. It's a settled posture of heart.

  244. It's a state of being.

  245. It's habitual.

  246. And so what he's doing here is he's warning.

  247. Watch out that there's not this kind of heart,

  248. these things controlling your hearts among you

  249. that would cause you to fall away from the living God.

  250. Remember, this is in between two calls to hold fast to Jesus

  251. all the way to the end.

  252. Now you might be wondering,

  253. Hey, what would I be looking for in myself or in others

  254. that would be kind of manifestations of evil in unbelief?

  255. Well, you can just point back to the wilderness generation.

  256. Grumbling, infighting.

  257. Complaining.

  258. Fear.

  259. Being ruled by fear that God can't act for his people,

  260. for the glory of his name and the good of his people.

  261. Chronic postures of heart like that.

  262. One of the things that Hebrews is going to raise

  263. is when God's people don't gather together,

  264. we neglect the coming together,

  265. that can become a sign of a settled unbelief.

  266. The book of Proverbs talks about that this way, 18.1.

  267. Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire.

  268. He breaks out against all sound judgment.

  269. These are just some things that evidence a settled posture of heart

  270. that is grievous in God's sight.

  271. You could call it like a virus.

  272. Unbelief, unchecked evil is a virus in a body of Christ,

  273. in a church.

  274. And the way that you kind of like address it,

  275. the antidote for that virus is in verse 13.

  276. But exhort one another every day,

  277. as long as it's called today,

  278. that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  279. So we are being exhorted to exhort one another.

  280. And if you're wondering what an exhortation is,

  281. it's like you're using your words to urge people on.

  282. Maybe you've been to a cross-country meet or a marathon.

  283. You know someone who's running in them.

  284. And what you do is like the person is running,

  285. and you go up to a place where they're going to pass.

  286. And you're like, you keep on going.

  287. You run, run, run, run, run.

  288. Give me more cowbell.

  289. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.

  290. And then they pass you,

  291. and then you run to the next place where they will be,

  292. and you're like, go, go, go, go, go.

  293. Don't give up.

  294. You're urging them on.

  295. You're exhorting them.

  296. You're not going to say, listen to your body.

  297. Don't stop running.

  298. Don't do it.

  299. You're going to tell them, press on.

  300. Go to the end.

  301. What we're being told to do here is we're to exhort one another.

  302. A Christian church spurs one another on.

  303. We encourage one another.

  304. We exhort one another to not give up, to hold fast to Jesus,

  305. to watch out for the deceitfulness of sin.

  306. Don't let that rule your heart, but press on to Jesus.

  307. It's the priesthood of all believers, brothers and sisters.

  308. It's the household of God.

  309. It's not just the pastor's job.

  310. We're all to be doing it together,

  311. to be encouraging one another, exhorting one another.

  312. And do you notice we're to be doing this daily,

  313. but exhort one another every day,

  314. as long as it's called today?

  315. That's impressive.

  316. It also gets to the sneakiness of sin.

  317. Daily, needing to be exhorted.

  318. I mean, we gather on a Sunday morning every week

  319. to be exhorted by God's word,

  320. to press on, to not give up.

  321. We send out the word of encouragement

  322. to our people in our church every Thursday,

  323. to press them on, to encourage them,

  324. to not give up.

  325. Do you know what?

  326. I don't know if you know what this is.

  327. This is called a cellular phone.

  328. It is a computer.

  329. I can send messages to people with it,

  330. and I can exhort people with it.

  331. I can send, today, fix your eyes on Jesus, dear brother.

  332. Today, don't give up.

  333. He is worthy.

  334. Today, remember Jesus is the treasure hidden in the field.

  335. Today, today, run for him.

  336. Look for him.

  337. Don't give up on him.

  338. See?

  339. See?

  340. We can exhort one another.

  341. Daily.

  342. It's to keep us from being hardened.

  343. The Old Testament talks about it

  344. as becoming stiff-necked.

  345. I hope you're seeing what's going on.

  346. The preventative from hardening your heart

  347. to God's word

  348. is by being exhorted by God's word.

  349. That's the content.

  350. We exhort one another with God speaking.

  351. We send texts to one another

  352. of God's word addressing them.

  353. Don't give up.

  354. Now, I want you to see something.

  355. Do you remember?

  356. It's the Spirit speaking in verse 7.

  357. And in chapter 1-1,

  358. we read,

  359. Long ago at many times and in many ways,

  360. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,

  361. but in these last days,

  362. he's spoken to us by his Son.

  363. Today, if you hear his voice,

  364. Jesus is the incarnate voice of God.

  365. One of the greatest ways

  366. we can exhort one another

  367. is by aiming one another at Jesus,

  368. the one we are to hold fast to

  369. all the way to the end.

  370. He is our great high priest.

  371. He's seated on his throne.

  372. He has grace to give in time of need.

  373. We exhort to him.

  374. So there's a warning.

  375. There's an exhortation.

  376. Unbelief should be alarming.

  377. We've got to take these kind of measures

  378. in order to kind of prevent it

  379. from taking place.

  380. There's an assurance in verse 14.

  381. It's conditional.

  382. For we have come to share in Christ

  383. if indeed we hold our original confidence

  384. firm to the end.

  385. It echoes what we read in chapter 3, verse 6.

  386. Notice the writer of Hebrews includes himself.

  387. For we have come to share in Christ

  388. if indeed we hold our original confidence firm

  389. to the end.

  390. He's not being presumptuous.

  391. He's saying,

  392. I'm going to press on and hold fast to Jesus too.

  393. One of the things I want to keep on reminding you

  394. through this series

  395. is that a genuine saving faith

  396. is a persevering faith.

  397. The way that genuine faith

  398. will be ultimately demonstrated

  399. is if you follow Jesus

  400. all the way through the end.

  401. Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 24.

  402. That those who will be saved

  403. will persevere to the end.

  404. And so what's being told to us here

  405. is yes, there's no denial

  406. that Jesus is the anchor of our souls.

  407. The focus here

  408. is on our responsibility

  409. to remain faithful to him.

  410. We're to persevere all the way to the end.

  411. And when you are holding fast to Jesus,

  412. not perfectly but faithfully,

  413. it should be a confidence.

  414. So how do you know

  415. if you are someone holding fast to Jesus

  416. or if someone is holding fast

  417. or Jesus or not?

  418. It's when you exhort them,

  419. how do they respond to God's word?

  420. Are they hardened in heart?

  421. Does it bounce just off?

  422. Or does it penetrate their heart?

  423. Causing them to strive

  424. strive to hold fast to Jesus

  425. all the way to the end?

  426. What happens in the rest of chapter 3

  427. in verses 15 through 18,

  428. we have a series of rhetorical questions

  429. that's an example

  430. of people who claim to be

  431. part of God's people

  432. who started but didn't finish.

  433. that unbelief kept them

  434. from entering God's rest.

  435. It's a stark warning.

  436. What I want you to notice

  437. is in verse 12,

  438. take care, brothers,

  439. lest there be in any of you

  440. an evil, unbelieving heart.

  441. See the word unbelieving?

  442. And then look at verse 19.

  443. So we see that you were unable,

  444. that they were unable to enter

  445. because of unbelief.

  446. It's that word unbelief.

  447. It bookends this little passage.

  448. It's what's being emphasized here.

  449. It's an unbelief warning.

  450. An alarm.

  451. And the way that we address the alarm

  452. is by asking the question,

  453. oh God, is there unbelief in me?

  454. Is there something in my heart

  455. that I'm not trusting your word?

  456. Either I'm grumbling or complaining

  457. or I'm living in fear.

  458. I'm overly anxious.

  459. I'm withholding myself

  460. from fellowshipping

  461. with brothers and sisters.

  462. Is some kind of unbelief virus in me?

  463. And this week,

  464. as I've been asking myself the question,

  465. God in his grace and mercy

  466. showed me some things.

  467. Showed me some things.

  468. I needed to confess.

  469. And so we respond

  470. by allowing God's word

  471. to do its work,

  472. but then we exhort one another

  473. with God's word.

  474. So we gather on a Sunday morning.

  475. We are exhorted by God's word.

  476. We listen and read

  477. and watch faithful preaching

  478. and healthy teaching.

  479. Text one another with his voice

  480. to spur each other on.

  481. Anybody been through

  482. an airport security?

  483. You know,

  484. you walk into the tube thing

  485. and this thing goes around you.

  486. And then you get flagged

  487. and you walk out

  488. and then you get wanded.

  489. That's how this is functioning.

  490. So this passage,

  491. this unbelief alarm

  492. is like God's word

  493. passing over your heart.

  494. Beep, beep, beep.

  495. Got some unbelief in there?

  496. Beep, beep.

  497. The way you do it

  498. is you confess it.

  499. Don't let it bounce off.

  500. Let it penetrate.

  501. Let God's word do its work.

  502. The next alarm

  503. is the no entry alarm.

  504. And that's in chapter 4,

  505. 1 through 11.

  506. And what you'll notice is this.

  507. Just as unbelief bookended

  508. that last passage

  509. in verse 12 and 19,

  510. we have a phrase

  511. bookending this passage.

  512. Therefore,

  513. while the promise

  514. of entering his rest

  515. still stands,

  516. of entering his rest.

  517. See that in 4, 1?

  518. Now look at 4, 11.

  519. Let us therefore strive

  520. to enter that rest

  521. so that no one may fall

  522. by the same sort of disobedience.

  523. So this idea

  524. of entering God's rest,

  525. it frames this next section

  526. so it's a no entry alarm.

  527. What will keep you

  528. from entering God's rest?

  529. Remember,

  530. what we're talking about here

  531. is not an unbelief

  532. that you see

  533. and confess to the Lord.

  534. we're talking about

  535. an unbelief in someone

  536. that they will ignore

  537. and disregard

  538. because they have

  539. a hardened heart.

  540. They don't care.

  541. The question is,

  542. what is this rest?

  543. What is this rest

  544. that it just permeates

  545. this passage

  546. from verses 4, 1 through 11?

  547. It shows up

  548. in so many different ways.

  549. As I swore my wrath,

  550. they shall not enter my rest,

  551. verse 3.

  552. They shall not enter my rest,

  553. verse 5.

  554. Verse 8,

  555. if Joshua is able

  556. to give them rest.

  557. 9,

  558. there remains a Sabbath rest.

  559. What is this rest?

  560. Let us strive

  561. to enter this rest.

  562. What rest

  563. are we talking about?

  564. It's God's rest.

  565. And the writer of Hebrews

  566. says something

  567. very interesting.

  568. He connects it

  569. to Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  570. Look at verse 3 and 4

  571. of chapter 4.

  572. For we who have believed

  573. enter that rest.

  574. So,

  575. belief in Jesus

  576. gets us into God's rest

  577. where unbelief

  578. keeps us out of his rest.

  579. And then he says,

  580. as he said,

  581. as I swore my wrath,

  582. they shall not enter my rest,

  583. although his works

  584. were finished

  585. from the foundation

  586. of the world.

  587. For he has somewhere

  588. spoken of the seventh day

  589. in this way,

  590. and God rested

  591. on the seventh day

  592. from all his works.

  593. So what the Hebrews writer

  594. is doing

  595. is he's connecting

  596. Genesis 2 rest

  597. with Psalm 95 rest.

  598. What is his rest?

  599. What he's saying is

  600. God's rest

  601. actually began

  602. in Genesis 2

  603. when he was finished

  604. from his work

  605. of creating the world.

  606. Just think about Eden.

  607. God dwelling

  608. with his people,

  609. Adam and Eve,

  610. in his place.

  611. Eden experiencing

  612. his peace

  613. in his rest.

  614. You know,

  615. one of my favorite

  616. verses is Genesis 3, 8

  617. where God comes

  618. a-walking

  619. in the cool

  620. of the day,

  621. calling out

  622. for Adam and Eve.

  623. It was before their sin.

  624. It was a place

  625. of perfect peace

  626. and rest.

  627. Them with God

  628. in his finished

  629. work of creation.

  630. but because of their unbelief

  631. and disobedience

  632. God removed

  633. from his rest

  634. and then they had

  635. to toil.

  636. And we were

  637. born into

  638. sinful toil.

  639. And so that's the,

  640. that's where rest

  641. began in Eden,

  642. right?

  643. But then there was

  644. another kind of rest

  645. promised.

  646. rest.

  647. In 4, 2,

  648. for good news

  649. came to us

  650. just as to them,

  651. the wilderness

  652. generation.

  653. But the message

  654. they heard

  655. did not benefit

  656. them because

  657. they were not

  658. united by faith

  659. with those

  660. who listened.

  661. Verse 6,

  662. since therefore

  663. it remains for

  664. some to enter

  665. it, rest,

  666. those who formerly

  667. received the good

  668. news,

  669. the wilderness

  670. generation,

  671. failed to enter

  672. because of

  673. disobedience.

  674. So there was

  675. a promise,

  676. good news,

  677. proclaimed to

  678. that wilderness

  679. generation.

  680. Do you know

  681. what it was?

  682. I'm going to

  683. bring you out

  684. of Egypt

  685. and I'm going

  686. to bring you

  687. into Canaan,

  688. my promised

  689. rest,

  690. my promised

  691. land,

  692. flowing with

  693. milk and

  694. honey.

  695. It is my

  696. place.

  697. You will

  698. dwell with

  699. me and

  700. we will

  701. dwell together

  702. and it

  703. will be

  704. good.

  705. We'll be

  706. together.

  707. You just

  708. need to

  709. trust and

  710. obey me.

  711. And they

  712. didn't trust

  713. and obey

  714. him.

  715. For 40

  716. years they

  717. provoked

  718. him.

  719. So he

  720. swore in

  721. his rest

  722. or his

  723. wrath,

  724. you will

  725. not enter

  726. my rest.

  727. No

  728. admittance,

  729. no thank

  730. you,

  731. you can't

  732. come in

  733. here because

  734. of your

  735. unbelief.

  736. And then

  737. in Psalm

  738. 95,

  739. David is

  740. talking about

  741. a different

  742. rest.

  743. Because

  744. Joshua had

  745. brought

  746. Israel into

  747. the promised

  748. land and

  749. David wrote

  750. Psalm 95

  751. after Joshua.

  752. So this is a

  753. different kind

  754. of rest.

  755. The rest

  756. of Psalm 95

  757. is addressing

  758. a full,

  759. final,

  760. and forever

  761. rest

  762. of God.

  763. Not in

  764. Canaan.

  765. The rest

  766. that's being

  767. talked about

  768. here,

  769. this God's

  770. rest,

  771. well it's a

  772. rest that

  773. still stands.

  774. Look at

  775. 4.1.

  776. While the

  777. promise of

  778. entering his

  779. rest still

  780. stands,

  781. we can still

  782. enter the

  783. rest.

  784. Look at

  785. 4.6.

  786. Since

  787. therefore it,

  788. God's rest,

  789. remains for

  790. some to

  791. enter it.

  792. Look at

  793. 4.9.

  794. So then

  795. there remains

  796. a Sabbath

  797. rest for the

  798. people of

  799. God, the

  800. new covenant

  801. people of

  802. God.

  803. There remains

  804. a rest,

  805. brothers and

  806. sisters,

  807. that we can

  808. enter.

  809. what is

  810. this rest?

  811. Well, let's

  812. think about

  813. this rest

  814. in two

  815. ways, as

  816. a person

  817. and as a

  818. place.

  819. God's

  820. rest as

  821. a person,

  822. Jesus.

  823. Here,

  824. Matthew 11.

  825. Come to

  826. me,

  827. all you

  828. who labor

  829. and are

  830. heavy laden,

  831. and I

  832. will give

  833. you rest.

  834. Take my

  835. yoke upon

  836. you and

  837. learn from

  838. me, for

  839. I am

  840. gentle and

  841. lowly and

  842. hard, and

  843. you will

  844. find rest

  845. for your

  846. souls, for

  847. my yoke is

  848. easy and

  849. my burden

  850. is light.

  851. Jesus is

  852. rest incarnate.

  853. And so our

  854. rest as

  855. Christians begins

  856. with a

  857. relationship with

  858. Jesus who is

  859. alive.

  860. we don't

  861. have to work

  862. anymore for

  863. salvation.

  864. He's

  865. accomplished it

  866. for us.

  867. He is our

  868. peace.

  869. But this

  870. rest is not

  871. just a person,

  872. it's a place.

  873. Jesus,

  874. starting a

  875. relationship with

  876. him is the

  877. beginning of

  878. our entrance

  879. into God's

  880. rest, but

  881. the full,

  882. final, and

  883. forever rest,

  884. that's a

  885. place.

  886. and the

  887. writer of

  888. Hebrews talks

  889. about it.

  890. Would you

  891. open up to

  892. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  893. 11?

  894. Let me just

  895. show you a

  896. couple spots.

  897. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:10

  898. chapter 11

  899. verse 10.

  900. Speaking of

  901. Jacob, for

  902. he, Jacob,

  903. was looking

  904. forward to

  905. the city

  906. that has

  907. foundations

  908. whose designer

  909. and builder

  910. is God.

  911. Our full,

  912. final, and

  913. forever place

  914. is a city

  915. not built

  916. by human

  917. hands,

  918. built by

  919. God.

  920. In verses

  921. 13 through

  922. 16, we

  923. see this,

  924. these all

  925. died in the

  926. faith, not

  927. having received

  928. the things

  929. promised, but

  930. having seen

  931. them, this is

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  932. chapter 11,

  933. but having

  934. seen them and

  935. greeted them

  936. from afar, and

  937. having acknowledged

  938. that they were

  939. strangers and

  940. exiles on the

  941. earth, for

  942. people who

  943. speak thus,

  944. make it clear

  945. that they are

  946. seeking a

  947. homeland.

  948. If they had

  949. been thinking

  950. of their land

  951. from which they

  952. had gone out,

  953. they would

  954. have had

  955. opportunity to

  956. return, but

  957. as it is, they

  958. desire a better

  959. country that is

  960. a heavenly one.

  961. Therefore, God

  962. is not ashamed

  963. that he called

  964. their God, for

  965. he has prepared

  966. for them a

  967. city.

  968. The place of

  969. full, final,

  970. and forever

  971. rest.

  972. Chapter 12,

  973. verse 22,

  974. but you have

  975. come to

  976. Mount Zion

  977. and the city

  978. of the living

  979. God, the

  980. heavenly Jerusalem

  981. and to

  982. innumerable

  983. angels and

  984. festal

  985. gathering, and

  986. to the

  987. assembly of

  988. the firstborn

  989. who are

  990. enrolled in

  991. heaven and

  992. to God, the

  993. judge of

  994. all, and

  995. the spirit

  996. of the

  997. righteous

  998. made perfect

  999. and to

  1000. Jesus, the

  1001. mediator of

  1002. a new

  1003. covenant.

  1004. It's a

  1005. city.

  1006. Revelation

  1007. 21, 22,

  1008. talk about

  1009. this heavenly

  1010. Jerusalem as

  1011. when after

  1012. Jesus returns,

  1013. it descends

  1014. upon the

  1015. new earth,

  1016. and God

  1017. dwells with

  1018. his people

  1019. forever in

  1020. his place in

  1021. perfect peace.

  1022. Peace.

  1023. Peace.

  1024. that's God's

  1025. rest.

  1026. Starts in a

  1027. relationship with

  1028. Jesus, and

  1029. it comes to

  1030. fruition in

  1031. the heavenly

  1032. Jerusalem.

  1033. Full, final,

  1034. and forever

  1035. peace.

  1036. Do you

  1037. remember?

  1038. Before you

  1039. became a

  1040. Christian, God

  1041. was a threat

  1042. to you, you

  1043. were a threat

  1044. to yourself,

  1045. relationships were

  1046. threatening, this

  1047. creation was

  1048. threatening with

  1049. claws and teeth

  1050. at you, but

  1051. now what we're

  1052. looking at is in

  1053. the new

  1054. Jerusalem, there

  1055. is no more

  1056. threat.

  1057. Nothing but

  1058. peace, nothing

  1059. but rest.

  1060. With God, with

  1061. yourself, others,

  1062. in the seven

  1063. Siberian tigers

  1064. I'll have as

  1065. pets.

  1066. No threat.

  1067. Do you know

  1068. what will keep

  1069. you out of

  1070. that?

  1071. No.

  1072. Chronic

  1073. unbelief.

  1074. Unrepentant,

  1075. unchecked,

  1076. unbelief.

  1077. That's a

  1078. rejecting of

  1079. Christ.

  1080. Jenny, Mary,

  1081. and me were in

  1082. New York City

  1083. this past summer

  1084. and we were

  1085. riding the

  1086. subway and you

  1087. have this key

  1088. card and in

  1089. order to get on

  1090. the subway you

  1091. have to go

  1092. and you'll

  1093. either get up

  1094. and you're

  1095. locked or

  1096. you'll get a

  1097. green light

  1098. and a

  1099. and so if

  1100. you have the

  1101. right key

  1102. card, you

  1103. can enter.

  1104. The right key

  1105. card is

  1106. Jesus, the

  1107. one who died

  1108. for our sins,

  1109. the one who's

  1110. been raised from

  1111. the dead, the

  1112. one who sits

  1113. on his throne,

  1114. the one who's

  1115. coming back and

  1116. we're one day

  1117. closer.

  1118. This is a

  1119. no entry

  1120. alarm.

  1121. Do you have

  1122. Jesus?

  1123. Are you holding

  1124. fast to him?

  1125. Now,

  1126. today,

  1127. are you trusting

  1128. him?

  1129. There's two

  1130. responses from

  1131. this passage

  1132. itself of how

  1133. to respond.

  1134. God's

  1135. love.

  1136. We see the

  1137. one in

  1138. chapter 4,

  1139. verse 1.

  1140. Therefore,

  1141. while the

  1142. promise of

  1143. entering his

  1144. rest still

  1145. stands, let

  1146. us fear,

  1147. lest any

  1148. of you should

  1149. seem to have

  1150. failed to

  1151. reach it.

  1152. The fear is

  1153. that someone

  1154. in this room

  1155. fails to

  1156. enter God's

  1157. rest.

  1158. That's the

  1159. fear.

  1160. Because of

  1161. unbelief.

  1162. Because sin

  1163. had hardened

  1164. their hearts.

  1165. Because

  1166. the other

  1167. way to

  1168. respond is

  1169. in verse

  1170. 11.

  1171. Let us

  1172. therefore strive

  1173. to enter

  1174. that rest

  1175. so that no

  1176. one may fall

  1177. by the same

  1178. sort of

  1179. disobedience

  1180. of the

  1181. wilderness

  1182. generation

  1183. type of

  1184. unbelief.

  1185. That

  1186. strive to

  1187. enter his

  1188. rest might

  1189. sound like

  1190. an oxymoron

  1191. in your

  1192. ears, like

  1193. a contradiction

  1194. in terms.

  1195. But it's

  1196. what the

  1197. writer of

  1198. Hebrews has

  1199. been saying

  1200. all along.

  1201. It's just

  1202. another way of

  1203. talking about

  1204. holding fast

  1205. to Jesus

  1206. all the

  1207. way to

  1208. the end.

  1209. Strive

  1210. to enter

  1211. that full

  1212. final

  1213. and forever

  1214. rest.

  1215. The strive

  1216. means to

  1217. do your

  1218. best.

  1219. What's being

  1220. talked about

  1221. here is not

  1222. minimal what

  1223. you can do,

  1224. it's maximal

  1225. what you do.

  1226. It's not

  1227. casually

  1228. drifting into

  1229. the new

  1230. Jerusalem,

  1231. it's

  1232. purposefully

  1233. striding

  1234. into the

  1235. new

  1236. Jerusalem.

  1237. It's

  1238. finishing

  1239. strong,

  1240. it's doing

  1241. your best,

  1242. not because

  1243. your salvation

  1244. depends on

  1245. it,

  1246. because you

  1247. have been

  1248. saved,

  1249. genuinely,

  1250. and you're

  1251. just working

  1252. it out.

  1253. This is

  1254. the no

  1255. entry alarm.

  1256. alarm.

  1257. The last

  1258. alarm is

  1259. in chapter

  1260. three,

  1261. chapter four,

  1262. excuse me,

  1263. verses 12

  1264. and 13.

  1265. And for the

  1266. sake of time,

  1267. I just want

  1268. to point you

  1269. to two

  1270. things,

  1271. that the

  1272. word of

  1273. God is

  1274. living and

  1275. active.

  1276. It

  1277. penetrates.

  1278. It's

  1279. sharper than

  1280. a two-edged

  1281. sword.

  1282. The two-edged

  1283. sword is a

  1284. sword that was

  1285. designed for

  1286. not slicing

  1287. and cutting,

  1288. but for

  1289. piercing.

  1290. For

  1291. penetrating,

  1292. for dividing,

  1293. for doing

  1294. deep damage.

  1295. In this

  1296. case,

  1297. deep good.

  1298. This

  1299. word of

  1300. God that

  1301. pierces

  1302. dividing soul

  1303. and spirit,

  1304. joints and

  1305. marrow,

  1306. discerning the

  1307. thoughts and

  1308. intentions of

  1309. the heart.

  1310. Do you know

  1311. what's being

  1312. described here?

  1313. It's the

  1314. opposite of

  1315. a hard

  1316. heart.

  1317. It's not

  1318. a hard

  1319. heart that

  1320. God's word

  1321. just bounces

  1322. off because

  1323. of the

  1324. hardness and

  1325. unbelief of

  1326. the person.

  1327. No,

  1328. this is a

  1329. heart that

  1330. is open

  1331. to God's

  1332. word and

  1333. says things

  1334. like,

  1335. oh God,

  1336. have your

  1337. work in

  1338. me.

  1339. Show me

  1340. any

  1341. unbelief in

  1342. my heart.

  1343. Help me put

  1344. to death

  1345. what grieves

  1346. you and would

  1347. you bring to

  1348. life faith and

  1349. obedience.

  1350. Use your

  1351. word to

  1352. deeply

  1353. address my

  1354. innermost

  1355. being so

  1356. that I

  1357. can wholeheartedly

  1358. live for

  1359. you.

  1360. This word

  1361. of God is

  1362. literally

  1363. logos of

  1364. God.

  1365. And this

  1366. section begins

  1367. with 412,

  1368. for the

  1369. logos of

  1370. God and

  1371. it ends

  1372. with a

  1373. logos to

  1374. whom we

  1375. must give

  1376. a logos

  1377. account.

  1378. It's framed

  1379. with word,

  1380. framed with

  1381. giving account.

  1382. And so

  1383. that last

  1384. verse,

  1385. verse 13,

  1386. is this

  1387. judgment

  1388. alarm.

  1389. All of us

  1390. in the room

  1391. will stand

  1392. before the

  1393. living God

  1394. to have to

  1395. give an

  1396. account,

  1397. a word,

  1398. for every

  1399. single day

  1400. of our

  1401. lives.

  1402. Every day.

  1403. For those

  1404. who strive

  1405. to enter

  1406. the new

  1407. Jerusalem,

  1408. God's rest,

  1409. who have

  1410. opened their

  1411. hearts for

  1412. God to do

  1413. the piercing

  1414. work of

  1415. his word

  1416. that judges

  1417. our hearts

  1418. to kill

  1419. sin and

  1420. bring to

  1421. life what

  1422. pleases the

  1423. God,

  1424. that day

  1425. is not

  1426. something you

  1427. fear.

  1428. That's a

  1429. day you

  1430. look forward

  1431. to,

  1432. where you

  1433. hear your

  1434. Savior say,

  1435. well done,

  1436. good and

  1437. faithful servant.

  1438. Come,

  1439. enter the

  1440. joy,

  1441. the rest

  1442. of your

  1443. master.

  1444. But for

  1445. those who

  1446. have hardened

  1447. hearts,

  1448. God is

  1449. sworn in

  1450. his wrath,

  1451. you will

  1452. not enter

  1453. his rest.

  1454. You can't

  1455. hide from

  1456. him.

  1457. You can't

  1458. pretend you're

  1459. something you're

  1460. not.

  1461. He sees

  1462. all,

  1463. everything is

  1464. revealed before

  1465. nothing is

  1466. hidden from

  1467. his sight.

  1468. So if you

  1469. are aware

  1470. of unbelief

  1471. in your heart,

  1472. and God's

  1473. word is

  1474. getting through

  1475. enough where

  1476. it is

  1477. registering,

  1478. what you

  1479. do is you

  1480. confess it

  1481. to him.

  1482. That's

  1483. normal Christian

  1484. course.

  1485. When God

  1486. pierces your

  1487. heart,

  1488. you confess

  1489. it to him

  1490. and that's

  1491. why 416

  1492. is in your

  1493. Bible.

  1494. Then we

  1495. draw near

  1496. with confidence

  1497. to the throne

  1498. of grace

  1499. that we may

  1500. receive mercy

  1501. and grace

  1502. in time of

  1503. need.

  1504. It turns out

  1505. we're in need

  1506. a lot of the

  1507. time.

  1508. Do I have an

  1509. amen?

  1510. Every Saturday

  1511. is in

  1512. Kenosha,

  1513. 1030 a.m.

  1514. It's a

  1515. testing of

  1516. the weather

  1517. warning system.

  1518. Sirens

  1519. blare.

  1520. It's a

  1521. four alarm

  1522. warning.

  1523. And today,

  1524. this day,

  1525. March 23rd,

  1526. 2025,

  1527. are you

  1528. hearing

  1529. the warning

  1530. of God?

  1531. Are you

  1532. hearing the

  1533. Holy Spirit

  1534. speaking?

  1535. Are you

  1536. allowing

  1537. his words

  1538. of Psalm

  1539. 95 to

  1540. penetrate

  1541. into the

  1542. recesses of

  1543. your heart

  1544. or are you

  1545. just going

  1546. to let him

  1547. bounce off?

  1548. If God's

  1549. word is

  1550. piercing your

  1551. heart,

  1552. exposing your

  1553. sin of

  1554. unbelief,

  1555. ingratitude,

  1556. neglect of

  1557. getting together,

  1558. you know what

  1559. you do?

  1560. You thank

  1561. him for it.

  1562. It's his

  1563. kindness to

  1564. you.

  1565. it's

  1566. normal for

  1567. those striving

  1568. to enter

  1569. God's

  1570. full and

  1571. final rest.

  1572. That's

  1573. normal.

  1574. So we

  1575. draw near

  1576. to him

  1577. and find

  1578. grace in

  1579. that time

  1580. of need.

  1581. It keeps

  1582. our hearts

  1583. tender.

  1584. Be warned,

  1585. !

  1586. hold fast

  1587. to Christ

  1588. all the way

  1589. to the end.

  1590. Let's pray.

  1591. God in

  1592. heaven,

  1593. Lord,

  1594. would you

  1595. address

  1596. things in

  1597. us and

  1598. purify us,

  1599. your people,

  1600. so that we

  1601. would live

  1602. wholeheartedly

  1603. holding fast

  1604. to you all

  1605. the way to

  1606. the end and

  1607. we're doing

  1608. that together.

  1609. God,

  1610. thank you so

  1611. much for

  1612. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1613. 3,

  1614. 7 through

  1615. 4,

  1616. 13.

  1617. Would you

  1618. make much

  1619. of your

  1620. word in our

  1621. lives?

  1622. In Jesus'

  1623. name we

  1624. pray.

  1625. Amen.

  1626. Amen.
