  1. Would you turn to your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  2. ! I'm going to read 414 through 510.

  3. ! It's on page of your pew Bible.

  4. It's on page 1189, bottom right.

  5. And on to page 1190.

  6. Hear God's word.

  7. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,

  8. Jesus, the Son of God.

  9. Let us hold fast our confession.

  10. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  11. but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  12. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace

  13. that we may receive and may find help, find grace to help in time of need.

  14. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act

  15. on behalf of men in relationship to God.

  16. To offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

  17. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward,

  18. since he himself is beset with weakness.

  19. Because of this, he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins,

  20. just as he does for those of the people.

  21. And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God,

  22. just as Aaron was.

  23. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest,

  24. but was appointed by him who said to him,

  25. You are my son today, I have begotten you.

  26. As he says also in another place,

  27. You were a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

  28. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications

  29. with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death.

  30. And he was heard because of his reverence.

  31. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.

  32. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal life

  33. to all who obey him.

  34. Being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

  35. May God bless the hearing of his word.

  36. Let me ask you,

  37. what do you have a weakness for?

  38. I have a weakness for chocolate.

  39. Milk chocolate.

  40. Not any of the dark chocolate business.

  41. I have a weakness for something else.

  42. This is going to be difficult to say.

  43. I have a weakness for 1970 and 1980 soft rock.

  44. Also known as yacht rock.

  45. I'm a huge fan.

  46. Do I have an amen?

  47. It's more than I thought.

  48. Okay.

  49. I have a serious weakness

  50. weakness for petite, curly-haired blondes

  51. who are in their second year of teaching kindergarten

  52. and have recently become a grandmother of a boy named Hudson

  53. who has a preference for dark chocolate.

  54. I have a serious weakness for her.

  55. When we talk about weakness,

  56. we're talking about a soft spot, right?

  57. You've got a soft spot for something.

  58. A desire for something.

  59. A wanting of something.

  60. What do you have a weakness for?

  61. We all have a weakness

  62. that's described in Hebrews 4 and 5

  63. that is not talking about an emotional weakness.

  64. It's not talking about a weakness for chocolate,

  65. a physical weakness, a mental weakness.

  66. It's a moral weakness.

  67. We all have a soft spot to sin.

  68. We all have this want

  69. for things that grieve God.

  70. We have a weakness called a sinful nature.

  71. We see this in verse 15 and 5 too

  72. that the Levitical priests were beset with weaknesses.

  73. Therefore, they are obligated

  74. to offer sacrifices for themselves.

  75. Because we have this weakness,

  76. do you know what this means?

  77. We are in constant need of a certain kind of help.

  78. When you're tempted to sin,

  79. when there's this external temptation

  80. that hooks this internal want to sin in you,

  81. where do you turn?

  82. Maybe you give yourself to the sin.

  83. Or maybe you turn to lesser helps

  84. in that time of need.

  85. You reach for a bottle.

  86. Or you reach for some chemicals.

  87. Or you reach for a TV remote.

  88. Or things like that.

  89. Those are just distractions.

  90. They're not true help.

  91. They're false hopes.

  92. When you are tempted to sin,

  93. don't give yourself to it.

  94. Don't settle for lesser helps

  95. as if you're your own high priest.

  96. Don't turn to yourself.

  97. Draw near to your great high priest, Jesus.

  98. When you become aware of your sin weakness,

  99. don't shrink back from him.

  100. Draw near to him, Christian.

  101. And this morning,

  102. we are given two reasons

  103. why we must near to Jesus,

  104. our great high priest,

  105. in our weakness.

  106. And all of us are weak.

  107. Reason number one,

  108. our great high priest

  109. is both willing and able to help us.

  110. And reason number two,

  111. our great high priest

  112. is better qualified

  113. than anybody else to help us.

  114. When you're tempted to sin,

  115. don't shrink from Jesus.

  116. Draw near to him.

  117. So let's look at this first reason

  118. that comes from

  119. what John read

  120. at the beginning of the service,

  121. chapter 4, 14 through 16.

  122. We draw near to him

  123. because he's willing and able to help.

  124. Last week,

  125. I closed the sermon

  126. by pointing you to 4, 12, and 13.

  127. And in verse 12,

  128. God's word is able to pierce

  129. an open heart

  130. and expose our sin weakness.

  131. It cuts us.

  132. It flays us.

  133. It judges, discerns the thoughts

  134. and intentions of the heart.

  135. And when you get exposed

  136. and pierced by the word,

  137. what do you do?

  138. Verse 13,

  139. we have this picture of judgment.

  140. Nothing's hidden from his sight.

  141. There's nothing in your heart and life

  142. that is hidden from his sight.

  143. And when you become aware

  144. of that weakness,

  145. what must you do?

  146. God is lovingly showing you

  147. your need for help.

  148. Where are you going to turn?

  149. At this point in the book of Hebrews,

  150. at 4, 14,

  151. the author turns his attention

  152. in earnest

  153. to the high priesthood

  154. of Jesus Christ.

  155. The book of Hebrews

  156. is one long exhortation

  157. to hold fast to Christ

  158. to the end.

  159. And what takes center stage

  160. in this book

  161. is the high priesthood of Jesus.

  162. We're to hold fast to Jesus

  163. by fixing our eyes

  164. drawing near to Jesus.

  165. In our passage,

  166. the word priest

  167. shows up

  168. a number of times

  169. in 4, 14,

  170. in 4, 15,

  171. in 5, 1,

  172. in 5, 5,

  173. in 5, 6,

  174. and even in 5,

  175. 5, 10.

  176. When you hear the word priest,

  177. I'm guessing

  178. some of you in the room

  179. have a visceral reaction.

  180. That word priest

  181. has a bad connotation

  182. to you.

  183. Others of you

  184. in the room

  185. don't have

  186. a bad connotation.

  187. Maybe you have

  188. a fond recollection

  189. of a priest.

  190. Or maybe some of you

  191. are just kind of like,

  192. you know what,

  193. I grew up in a,

  194. we just didn't really talk

  195. about any kind of priests.

  196. A priest is basically

  197. a go-between

  198. between God

  199. and man.

  200. And you can see it

  201. in the passage

  202. in chapter 5,

  203. verse 1.

  204. For every high priest

  205. chosen from among men

  206. is appointed to act

  207. on behalf of men

  208. in relationship to God.

  209. A priest

  210. is a mediator

  211. between God

  212. and man,

  213. especially when it comes

  214. to our sin.

  215. If we were Jews

  216. in the Old Testament times

  217. living under

  218. the Old Covenant,

  219. if you were to sin

  220. or I were to sin,

  221. we would have to find

  222. a priest.

  223. And what we would

  224. bring to the priest

  225. is an animal

  226. to be sacrificed

  227. to God

  228. for our sins.

  229. And that priest

  230. would kill the animal,

  231. shed its blood

  232. in order to cover

  233. your sin,

  234. cover my sin.

  235. But that

  236. that blood

  237. of bulls and goats,

  238. just temporary.

  239. It doesn't have

  240. the power

  241. to change your heart.

  242. It's just temporary.

  243. It temporarily

  244. atones.

  245. The point is

  246. you would have

  247. needed a priest

  248. in your weakness.

  249. But all that

  250. changed with Jesus.

  251. In verse 14,

  252. we read

  253. that this

  254. Jesus,

  255. we see two titles.

  256. And it's the first time

  257. in the book of Hebrews

  258. that the author

  259. brings these two titles

  260. together.

  261. Since then,

  262. we have a great high priest

  263. who has passed

  264. through the heavens,

  265. Jesus,

  266. the Son of God.

  267. Great high priest

  268. is getting at Jesus

  269. as the greatest

  270. mediator

  271. between God

  272. and man

  273. that there is.

  274. And what we're

  275. going to see

  276. as the book

  277. of Hebrews

  278. unfolds

  279. is just

  280. how wonderful

  281. and great

  282. of a priest

  283. he is

  284. for us.

  285. In fact,

  286. he is so great

  287. a priest,

  288. he makes

  289. the priesthood

  290. of the old

  291. covenant

  292. out of date

  293. and obsolete.

  294. complete.

  295. That title,

  296. Son of God,

  297. in chapters 1 and 2,

  298. the author

  299. of Hebrews

  300. wants you

  301. to believe

  302. that Jesus

  303. is

  304. the

  305. Son of God,

  306. which means

  307. he's fully God.

  308. He's the creator

  309. of all,

  310. the sustainer

  311. of all.

  312. Do you remember

  313. that from chapter 1?

  314. He's superior

  315. to the angels

  316. and he

  317. is at the right

  318. hand of God.

  319. You see that

  320. in verse 14,

  321. this idea

  322. of passing

  323. through the heavens.

  324. Jesus

  325. died,

  326. was raised,

  327. and ascended,

  328. passing

  329. through the heavens

  330. to God's

  331. right hand,

  332. exalted

  333. and throned

  334. on high.

  335. That's the passing

  336. through the heavens.

  337. It locates him

  338. for us.

  339. This high,

  340. great high priest,

  341. this mediator,

  342. is also

  343. our exalted

  344. king.

  345. And he is eager

  346. to help you

  347. in time of weakness.

  348. That little phrase,

  349. hold fast

  350. the confession.

  351. Let us hold fast

  352. our confession.

  353. A confession

  354. is a,

  355. is a statement

  356. of truth.

  357. When you think

  358. of confession,

  359. you probably think

  360. about confessing

  361. sin,

  362. and what you're

  363. doing is

  364. you're,

  365. you're confessing

  366. the truth

  367. about your sin.

  368. There's also

  369. another kind

  370. of confession

  371. where you're

  372. confessing the truth

  373. about who God

  374. is.

  375. And right here,

  376. we're being told

  377. of a confession.

  378. Hold fast

  379. to the confession

  380. about Jesus,

  381. that he is

  382. our great high priest

  383. and our king,

  384. our son of,

  385. the son of God

  386. who reigns on high.

  387. So I want you

  388. to speak a confession

  389. back to me.

  390. I'm going to,

  391. I'm going to feed

  392. you some lines

  393. and I want you

  394. to speak it back.

  395. You ready?

  396. Christ is my,

  397. risen and reigning,

  398. priest and king.

  399. Christ is my,

  400. risen and reigning,

  401. priest and king.

  402. Let's do it one more time.

  403. Christ is my,

  404. Christ is my,

  405. risen and reigning,

  406. priest and king.

  407. Hold fast to that.

  408. This week,

  409. don't let go of that.

  410. Hold fast to that truth.

  411. It's true.

  412. It's who he is.

  413. Jesus,

  414. speak that confession

  415. to yourself.

  416. Now you might be thinking,

  417. okay,

  418. that might be true,

  419. but is Jesus

  420. my priest and king?

  421. Does he want to help me?

  422. Is he willing to help me?

  423. In verse 15,

  424. we read,

  425. for we do not have

  426. a high priest

  427. who is unable to

  428. sympathize with our weakness,

  429. weaknesses,

  430. sin,

  431. weaknesses,

  432. but one who in every respect

  433. has been tempted as we are,

  434. yet without sin.

  435. That word sympathize.

  436. It's tenderhearted.

  437. Even he has an affection

  438. for us,

  439. even in our sin weakness.

  440. He's not fond of our sin.

  441. He's fond of us

  442. trying to deal with our sin.

  443. He totally gets us.

  444. He is both completely holy

  445. and deeply compassionate

  446. towards you.

  447. Now you might be asking

  448. this question,

  449. well,

  450. how can Jesus,

  451. how can he sympathize

  452. with our sin?

  453. I mean,

  454. did Jesus ever sin?

  455. Well,

  456. according to our New Testament

  457. and the rest of the Bible,

  458. the Christ never sinned once.

  459. In fact,

  460. in 2 Corinthians 5.21,

  461. we read about this great thing

  462. that God through Christ

  463. has done for us.

  464. And for us,

  465. he made him.

  466. God made Christ

  467. who knew no sin

  468. to be sin on our behalf

  469. that we might become

  470. the righteousness of God.

  471. Jesus is utterly

  472. without sin,

  473. which raises another question.

  474. Well,

  475. then how does it work?

  476. How can he be tempted

  477. and yet without sin?

  478. It's right there in the text.

  479. Yet without sin.

  480. How's that possible?

  481. Well,

  482. we in our weakness,

  483. this internal sinful nature

  484. that when there's

  485. this external temptation,

  486. our internal sinful desires

  487. want it.

  488. James 1 talks about

  489. that we're carried away,

  490. lured,

  491. enticed

  492. by the desires

  493. inside of us.

  494. Jesus

  495. did not have

  496. a sinful nature.

  497. He didn't have

  498. that internal craving

  499. that we do

  500. to grieve God.

  501. It wasn't there.

  502. He was fully God

  503. and fully man,

  504. sinless

  505. to the core,

  506. which means this.

  507. Jesus experienced

  508. external temptation.

  509. Just think about him

  510. in the wilderness

  511. being tempted

  512. by Satan

  513. in Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  514. Those temptations

  515. were real.

  516. They affected him.

  517. He was

  518. yet he was

  519. without sin

  520. because there was

  521. nothing in him

  522. to grab hold of it.

  523. What it means

  524. is that

  525. what he experienced,

  526. this real

  527. external temptation,

  528. it makes him

  529. sympathetic

  530. to us

  531. when we're

  532. tempted.

  533. And he's not

  534. like this.

  535. It's not like

  536. that Jesus

  537. is looking down

  538. from his throne

  539. on you

  540. and say,

  541. hey,

  542. I handled

  543. that temptation.

  544. You gotta handle

  545. it too.

  546. It's more

  547. like this.

  548. I experienced

  549. that temptation.

  550. I know how hard

  551. it is.

  552. Let me help you.

  553. Let me help you.

  554. You've got a priest king

  555. who's willing

  556. to help you.

  557. Sympathetic.

  558. He's experienced

  559. the full gamut

  560. of temptation

  561. yet without sin.

  562. And his posture

  563. towards you

  564. is,

  565. I'm here to help.

  566. But is he able?

  567. In verse 16,

  568. we read,

  569. let us then

  570. with confidence

  571. draw near

  572. to the throne

  573. of grace

  574. that we may

  575. receive mercy

  576. and find grace

  577. to help in time

  578. of need.

  579. Oh, he is able.

  580. Totally God.

  581. Totally man.

  582. He's the creator

  583. of the universe

  584. and sustainer

  585. of the universe.

  586. He gave himself

  587. for us

  588. bearing God's

  589. wrath in full.

  590. 2.17,

  591. this high priest

  592. was our propitiation.

  593. Oh, he's able

  594. to help.

  595. We draw near

  596. in our weakness

  597. to his throne

  598. of grace

  599. and there's the power.

  600. power.

  601. When you read grace

  602. in your Bibles,

  603. think of both

  604. his power

  605. and his posture

  606. towards you.

  607. His power

  608. to change you,

  609. to help you,

  610. to transform you,

  611. to supply

  612. what you need.

  613. and his posture

  614. behind that power

  615. is love.

  616. Oh, he wants it

  617. for you.

  618. He wants to give

  619. you what you need.

  620. He wants you

  621. to thrive

  622. in godliness.

  623. Anybody see the show?

  624. Who wants to be

  625. a millionaire?

  626. It's kind of dated.

  627. And that show

  628. contestants are asked

  629. multiple choice questions

  630. and if they can't

  631. answer the question,

  632. they are given

  633. some options.

  634. 50-50,

  635. where two of the four

  636. multiple choice

  637. are removed

  638. or poll the audience,

  639. where the audience

  640. chimes in

  641. on what they think

  642. the answer is

  643. and then there's

  644. phone a friend.

  645. You phone like

  646. your expert

  647. in the field

  648. to help you

  649. with that information.

  650. A million dollars

  651. is nothing

  652. when compared

  653. to holding fast

  654. to Jesus Christ

  655. to the end.

  656. Who in the room

  657. wants to hold fast

  658. to Jesus Christ

  659. to the end?

  660. I do.

  661. And do you know what?

  662. We've got something

  663. that's better

  664. than phone a friend.

  665. It's not a phone.

  666. It's a throne.

  667. Authority,

  668. power,

  669. overall.

  670. And on that throne

  671. sits

  672. your great high priest

  673. who is wanting,

  674. eager to help

  675. in pouring out

  676. this grace

  677. to you.

  678. What's keeping you back?

  679. What's holding you back?

  680. What's holding you back

  681. from just making

  682. a beeline to his throne?

  683. Is it shame?

  684. Is it fear?

  685. Oh, don't be afraid.

  686. We are to draw near

  687. with confidence

  688. to the throne.

  689. Do you know why?

  690. Do you know

  691. what's the source

  692. of this boldness?

  693. It's not your performance.

  694. It's what Christ

  695. has done.

  696. If you flip

  697. in your Bibles

  698. back to Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:19–23

  699. chapter 10

  700. verses 19

  701. through 23,

  702. to just

  703. here is

  704. your

  705. confidence,

  706. your boldness

  707. to enter

  708. the throne

  709. of the risen

  710. and reigning

  711. priest king.

  712. Therefore,

  713. brothers,

  714. since we have confidence

  715. to enter the holy places

  716. by the blood

  717. of Jesus,

  718. Jesus,

  719. the throne

  720. is in the heavenly

  721. sanctuary

  722. by the new

  723. and living way

  724. that he opened

  725. for us

  726. through the curtain

  727. that is through his flesh.

  728. And since we have

  729. a great high priest

  730. over the house of God,

  731. let us draw near

  732. with a true heart

  733. and full assurance

  734. of faith

  735. with our hearts

  736. sprinkled clean

  737. from an evil conscience

  738. and our bodies

  739. washed with pure water.

  740. Let us hold fast

  741. the confession

  742. of our hope

  743. without wavering

  744. for he who promised

  745. is faithful.

  746. We draw near

  747. to the throne of grace

  748. in our sin weakness

  749. because Jesus

  750. has paid for our sin.

  751. He's the propitiation

  752. and his posture

  753. towards you is love

  754. and he's eager to help.

  755. Do you know what?

  756. His throne room

  757. is open to you

  758. anytime,

  759. anywhere.

  760. Let's say that you are being,

  761. you're like,

  762. I'm going to be tempted

  763. to sin later today

  764. because I know

  765. that situation.

  766. Go to the throne of grace.

  767. Maybe you're in a situation

  768. and you're being tempted

  769. in that moment.

  770. Make a beeline

  771. to the throne of grace.

  772. Maybe you're on the backside

  773. of when you've sinned

  774. and you're feeling shame

  775. and guilty.

  776. Make a beeline

  777. to the throne of grace

  778. at any time.

  779. Before,

  780. during,

  781. after.

  782. Let me ask you this question.

  783. When tempted,

  784. where do you turn?

  785. When you become aware

  786. of your sin weakness,

  787. to whom do you look?

  788. Don't shrink back.

  789. Don't turn to yourself.

  790. Draw near to the throne.

  791. Draw near to Jesus.

  792. Your great high priest

  793. is both willing

  794. and able to help.

  795. Do I have an amen?

  796. Amen.

  797. The second reason

  798. why we draw near

  799. to our great high priest

  800. and our weakness

  801. is that he is better

  802. qualified to help.

  803. We see this in chapter 5,

  804. verses 1 through 10.

  805. Let's just pretend

  806. for a second.

  807. Let's just pretend

  808. that we were all members

  809. of the original church

  810. that received

  811. the letter of Hebrews.

  812. More likely than not,

  813. you would have come

  814. to faith in Jesus

  815. out of Judaism.

  816. You would have been

  817. a Jewish background believer.

  818. And we know

  819. from chapter 10,

  820. verses 32 through 34,

  821. that we would have suffered

  822. greatly for Jesus.

  823. But we also know

  824. from this book,

  825. we're going to see

  826. this next week,

  827. that we had become

  828. dull in our hearing

  829. and sluggish.

  830. And we've been tempted

  831. to drift from our confession,

  832. to let it go

  833. instead of holding fast.

  834. Our temptation

  835. in those moments

  836. would be to go back

  837. to that old, familiar,

  838. culturally acceptable way

  839. of Judaism.

  840. To go back

  841. to the old priesthood,

  842. to go back

  843. to the old

  844. sacrificial system

  845. of the old covenant.

  846. But you've got to understand,

  847. to go back to that

  848. means you'd have to

  849. reject Christ.

  850. You can't have both

  851. and you can't have

  852. but let's be honest.

  853. If we're granted

  854. to suffer

  855. or if we grow

  856. sluggish

  857. or dull of hearing,

  858. I'm guessing

  859. we're not going

  860. to go back

  861. to Judaism.

  862. We weren't saved

  863. out of Judaism.

  864. No,

  865. I think we'd be tempted

  866. to go back

  867. to a

  868. Christ-less

  869. hedonism

  870. or a

  871. Christ-less

  872. materialism

  873. or a

  874. Christ-less

  875. conservatism

  876. or a

  877. Christ-less

  878. individualism.

  879. And do you know

  880. who the high priest

  881. of individualism is?

  882. you appoint yourself

  883. high priest.

  884. You mediate

  885. what you want

  886. in a

  887. Christ-less

  888. individualism.

  889. Brothers and sisters,

  890. we are not

  891. to go back

  892. to that.

  893. It's

  894. Christ-less.

  895. We've been called

  896. out of a

  897. Christ-less

  898. way of

  899. thinking

  900. and

  901. living.

  902. So if we're

  903. called to share

  904. in the suffering

  905. of Jesus

  906. and we find

  907. ourselves

  908. tempted

  909. to become

  910. dull and

  911. sluggish,

  912. we don't

  913. go back

  914. to individualism.

  915. We draw

  916. near to

  917. Christ

  918. Christ.

  919. And there

  920. are five

  921. reasons

  922. from

  923. 5.1

  924. through 10

  925. why

  926. Jesus is

  927. better

  928. qualified.

  929. It's like

  930. the writer

  931. saying,

  932. don't

  933. go back.

  934. And here's

  935. why.

  936. Number one,

  937. Jesus is

  938. better qualified

  939. in his

  940. appointment.

  941. 5.1

  942. says,

  943. for every

  944. high priest

  945. chosen from

  946. among men

  947. is appointed

  948. to act

  949. on behalf

  950. of men

  951. in relationship

  952. to God

  953. to offer

  954. gifts and

  955. sacrifices

  956. for sins.

  957. 4.

  958. And no

  959. one takes

  960. this honor

  961. for himself

  962. but only

  963. when called

  964. by God

  965. just as

  966. Aaron was.

  967. So the

  968. similarities

  969. between the

  970. Levitical

  971. priesthood,

  972. the priesthood

  973. that comes

  974. from the

  975. line of

  976. Aaron,

  977. and the

  978. priesthood

  979. of Jesus

  980. who he

  981. is in

  982. line with

  983. Melchizedek,

  984. the similarity

  985. is both

  986. priests are

  987. appointed by

  988. God.

  989. Verse 5,

  990. Do you

  991. know what

  992. the difference

  993. is?

  994. The

  995. difference

  996. is that

  997. the Levitical

  998. priesthood,

  999. well,

  1000. they were

  1001. appointed

  1002. according to

  1003. kind of

  1004. family lineage,

  1005. chosen from

  1006. among men,

  1007. one.

  1008. Jesus

  1009. was appointed

  1010. by prophetic

  1011. word of

  1012. God.

  1013. 5.5,

  1014. quoting

  1015. Psalm 2.7,

  1016. we saw this

  1017. in chapter

  1018. one,

  1019. you are my

  1020. son,

  1021. this is

  1022. God the

  1023. father

  1024. speaking to

  1025. God the

  1026. son,

  1027. you are

  1028. my son,

  1029. today I

  1030. have begotten

  1031. you,

  1032. and when we

  1033. saw this

  1034. in chapter

  1035. one,

  1036. this is

  1037. about his

  1038. kingship,

  1039. this is

  1040. about his

  1041. deity,

  1042. this is

  1043. about him

  1044. being

  1045. enthroned

  1046. on high.

  1047. But it's

  1048. not just

  1049. his being

  1050. an exalted

  1051. king,

  1052. for the

  1053. first time

  1054. in Hebrews

  1055. we have

  1056. a quote

  1057. from Psalm

    Psalms 110:6

  1058. 110,

  1059. verse 6,

  1060. as he says

  1061. also in

  1062. another place,

  1063. you are a

  1064. priest forever

  1065. after the

  1066. order of

  1067. Melchizedek,

  1068. this is

  1069. God speaking

  1070. to God

  1071. the son,

  1072. you are

  1073. a priest

  1074. forever

  1075. after the

  1076. order of

  1077. Melchizedek,

  1078. it's a

  1079. better

  1080. appointment,

  1081. prophetic

  1082. word

  1083. fulfilled

  1084. in Jesus

  1085. Christ,

  1086. because

  1087. Jesus is

  1088. at the

  1089. center

  1090. of God's

  1091. plan

  1092. of salvation,

  1093. in chapter

  1094. 7 we're

  1095. going to

  1096. come back

  1097. to Melchizedek

  1098. where the

  1099. writer will

  1100. unpack more

  1101. of that

  1102. for us,

  1103. but let me

  1104. just tell you

  1105. this,

  1106. Melchizedek

  1107. first shows

  1108. up in

  1109. Genesis

    Genesis 14 chapter mention

  1110. chapter 14,

  1111. Abram has

  1112. just rescued

  1113. Lot,

  1114. he's coming

  1115. out with

  1116. all this

  1117. stuff,

  1118. Melchizedek

  1119. comes from

  1120. nowhere,

  1121. and what

  1122. his name

  1123. means is

  1124. king of

  1125. righteousness,

  1126. he's introduced

  1127. as both

  1128. the king

  1129. of Salem

  1130. and the

  1131. high priest

  1132. of God,

  1133. he's both

  1134. a high priest

  1135. and a

  1136. king,

  1137. and you

  1138. know what

  1139. Abram does?

  1140. He gives

  1141. him a tenth

  1142. of everything

  1143. he's got,

  1144. it's from

  1145. that priestly

  1146. order comes

  1147. Jesus,

  1148. the

  1149. appointment

  1150. of Jesus

  1151. as great

  1152. high priest

  1153. is the

  1154. fulfillment

  1155. of scripture,

  1156. it's a

  1157. better

  1158. appointment,

  1159. the second

  1160. way that

  1161. Jesus is

  1162. better

  1163. qualified

  1164. is in

  1165. his

  1166. nature,

  1167. both the

  1168. Levitical

  1169. priests

  1170. and Jesus

  1171. the

  1172. Melchizedekian

  1173. priest,

  1174. both

  1175. priests

  1176. are totally

  1177. human,

  1178. chosen from

  1179. among men,

  1180. 5-1,

  1181. verse 7,

  1182. in the days

  1183. of his flesh,

  1184. speaking of

  1185. Jesus,

  1186. the difference

  1187. is that the

  1188. Aaronic

  1189. priesthood,

  1190. the Levitical

  1191. priesthood,

  1192. was in

  1193. verse 2,

  1194. they were

  1195. beset,

  1196. beset by

  1197. weakness,

  1198. the weakness

  1199. of indwelling

  1200. sin,

  1201. they were

  1202. sinful

  1203. human beings,

  1204. whereas in

  1205. 5-5,

  1206. we read

  1207. about Jesus

  1208. being you

  1209. are my

  1210. son,

  1211. today I

  1212. have begotten

  1213. you,

  1214. he's fully

  1215. God,

  1216. we saw in

  1217. 4-15,

  1218. yet without

  1219. sin,

  1220. he is a

  1221. sinless

  1222. human being,

  1223. by nature,

  1224. Jesus is

  1225. better qualified

  1226. to be a

  1227. high priest

  1228. because he's

  1229. sinless in

  1230. his humanity,

  1231. better in

  1232. nature,

  1233. third,

  1234. he's better

  1235. in relating,

  1236. both

  1237. priests,

  1238. both Levitical

  1239. priests and

  1240. Jesus,

  1241. our great

  1242. high priest,

  1243. they were

  1244. tender-hearted

  1245. to those

  1246. they cared

  1247. for,

  1248. in 5-2,

  1249. we see,

  1250. speaking of the

  1251. Levitical

  1252. priest,

  1253. he can

  1254. deal gently

  1255. with the

  1256. ignorant and

  1257. wayward since

  1258. he himself is

  1259. beset with

  1260. weakness,

  1261. Jesus,

  1262. we saw in

  1263. 4-15,

  1264. he is

  1265. sympathetic,

  1266. he's been

  1267. tempted in

  1268. every way,

  1269. the difference

  1270. is that

  1271. Jesus

  1272. is not a

  1273. fellow

  1274. sinner,

  1275. sinner,

  1276. he's a

  1277. fellow

  1278. sufferer,

  1279. Jesus

  1280. relates to

  1281. us,

  1282. he understands

  1283. our being

  1284. tempted to

  1285. sin,

  1286. but he

  1287. also

  1288. suffered,

  1289. and for

  1290. a church

  1291. that was

  1292. suffering,

  1293. this is

  1294. really helpful,

  1295. we see in

  1296. verses 7 and

  1297. 8 that in

  1298. the days of

  1299. his flesh,

  1300. Jesus offered

  1301. up prayers and

  1302. supplications

  1303. without cries

  1304. and tears to

  1305. him who was

  1306. able to save

  1307. him from

  1308. death,

  1309. and he was

  1310. heard because

  1311. of his

  1312. reverence,

  1313. although he

  1314. was a son,

  1315. he learned

  1316. obedience through

  1317. what he

  1318. suffered,

  1319. Jesus learned

  1320. obedience,

  1321. not because he

  1322. was disobedient,

  1323. but he learned

  1324. true trust and

  1325. obeying of

  1326. God his

  1327. father through

  1328. hardship,

  1329. he learned

  1330. it as a

  1331. fellow human

  1332. being,

  1333. he went

  1334. before us,

  1335. and now he's

  1336. an example to

  1337. us of how

  1338. to endure

  1339. suffering,

  1340. he relates

  1341. to us that

  1342. way,

  1343. because he

  1344. himself suffered,

  1345. he relates

  1346. with us when

  1347. we suffer for

  1348. him,

  1349. he's tender

  1350. towards us,

  1351. he relates

  1352. to us better,

  1353. he understands

  1354. our temptation

  1355. to sin,

  1356. but he

  1357. absolutely

  1358. understands what

  1359. it's like to

  1360. suffer,

  1361. the Levitical

  1362. priesthood,

  1363. they didn't,

  1364. it's better in

  1365. his relating,

  1366. it's better in

  1367. his sacrifice,

  1368. this is the

  1369. fourth qualification

  1370. that separates

  1371. him from the

  1372. Levitical

  1373. priesthood,

  1374. you know

  1375. it's similar

  1376. between the

  1377. two,

  1378. Levitical

  1379. priests and

  1380. Jesus,

  1381. our great

  1382. high priest

  1383. from the

  1384. line of

  1385. Melchizedek,

  1386. both offered

  1387. sacrifices,

  1388. the difference

  1389. is that the

  1390. Levites had

  1391. to offer

  1392. animal sacrifices

  1393. for themselves

  1394. because they

  1395. themselves were

  1396. sinners and

  1397. that animal

  1398. sacrifice only

  1399. lasted for a

  1400. little while for

  1401. their sin,

  1402. just temporarily

  1403. atonement,

  1404. they had to

  1405. offer sacrifice

  1406. repeatedly

  1407. because they

  1408. were repeatedly

  1409. sinning,

  1410. Jesus who

  1411. learned obedience

  1412. through suffering

  1413. became the

  1414. source,

  1415. verse 9,

  1416. of eternal

  1417. life to all

  1418. who obey

  1419. him,

  1420. to all who

  1421. hold fast to

  1422. him to the

  1423. end,

  1424. he became the

  1425. source of our

  1426. eternal life,

  1427. he is the

  1428. greatest sacrifice

  1429. of all,

  1430. our high

  1431. priest is the

  1432. once and for

  1433. all sacrifice

  1434. for our sins,

  1435. and he sat

  1436. down at the

  1437. right hand of

  1438. God,

  1439. he's a better

  1440. sacrifice,

  1441. that in chapter

  1442. 2,

  1443. verse 17,

  1444. the first time

  1445. high priest

  1446. shows up,

  1447. the author

  1448. connects him

  1449. as being our

  1450. propitiation,

  1451. the sacrifice

  1452. that satisfied

  1453. God's wrath

  1454. for our sins,

  1455. he paid it

  1456. all,

  1457. all of your

  1458. sin,

  1459. all of the

  1460. penalty of it,

  1461. paid in full

  1462. in that once

  1463. and for all

  1464. sacrifice by

  1465. your great

  1466. high priest

  1467. king,

  1468. he is

  1469. better qualified

  1470. because he

  1471. offers a

  1472. better sacrifice,

  1473. you need

  1474. help,

  1475. do you need

  1476. help,

  1477. he's addressed

  1478. your greatest

  1479. need,

  1480. what else

  1481. do you need

  1482. to see

  1483. that he

  1484. would give

  1485. his life

  1486. for you,

  1487. that he

  1488. would pay

  1489. the sin,

  1490. the wrath

  1491. your sin

  1492. deserved,

  1493. but I've

  1494. got one

  1495. more,

  1496. hang in

  1497. there with

  1498. me,

  1499. he's

  1500. better,

  1501. he's

  1502. better in

  1503. his living,

  1504. you know,

  1505. the similarities

  1506. between the

  1507. Levitical

  1508. priesthood and

  1509. the priesthood

  1510. of Jesus is

  1511. all of the

  1512. Levitical

  1513. priests,

  1514. as Jesus,

  1515. they lived

  1516. and they

  1517. died,

  1518. that's what

  1519. they have

  1520. in common,

  1521. the difference

  1522. is that

  1523. Jesus

  1524. was raised

  1525. from the

  1526. dead,

  1527. he's alive,

  1528. we have a

  1529. great high

  1530. priest and

  1531. king who

  1532. is exalted

  1533. at the right

  1534. hand of God

  1535. and he

  1536. is alive,

  1537. and that

  1538. quote in

  1539. verse 6,

  1540. as he also

  1541. says in

  1542. another place,

  1543. you are a

  1544. priest

  1545. forever

  1546. in the order

  1547. of Melchizedek,

  1548. did any

  1549. of you

  1550. get a little

  1551. confused

  1552. when you

  1553. were reading

  1554. verse 7,

  1555. in the days

  1556. of his flesh

  1557. Jesus offered

  1558. up prayers

  1559. and supplications

  1560. with loud

  1561. cries and

  1562. tears to

  1563. him who

  1564. was able

  1565. to save

  1566. him from

  1567. death,

  1568. and you're

  1569. thinking,

  1570. hold on a

  1571. second,

  1572. but he

  1573. died,

  1574. what do

  1575. you mean

  1576. saved from

  1577. death?

  1578. He died

  1579. on the

  1580. cross,

  1581. do you know

  1582. how God

  1583. answered

  1584. that prayer?

  1585. He raised

  1586. him from

  1587. the dead.

  1588. God heard

  1589. his prayer

  1590. and answered

  1591. it,

  1592. and so

  1593. now,

  1594. check it

  1595. out,

  1596. our great

  1597. high priest

  1598. and king

  1599. is victorious

  1600. over sin,

  1601. death,

  1602. and the

  1603. devil.

  1604. Oh,

  1605. he's better

  1606. qualified.

  1607. Draw near

  1608. to him,

  1609. he's better

  1610. qualified

  1611. than any

  1612. Levitical

  1613. priest,

  1614. even

  1615. yourself.

  1616. Stop

  1617. dealing

  1618. with your

  1619. own sin.

  1620. Go to

  1621. your great

  1622. high priest.

  1623. Now,

  1624. I don't know

  1625. about you,

  1626. but hey,

  1627. if I were

  1628. taking resumes

  1629. for who's

  1630. going to be

  1631. the great

  1632. high priest

  1633. of my

  1634. life,

  1635. and I'm

  1636. looking at

  1637. resumes

  1638. from

  1639. Levitical

  1640. priests,

  1641. and I'm

  1642. looking at

  1643. my own

  1644. resume,

  1645. and I'm

  1646. looking at

  1647. the resume

  1648. of Jesus,

  1649. do you

  1650. know who

  1651. I'm going

  1652. with?

  1653. Jesus.

  1654. Better

  1655. in his

  1656. appointment,

  1657. better in

  1658. his nature,

  1659. better in

  1660. his relating,

  1661. better in

  1662. his sacrifice,

  1663. better in

  1664. his living.

  1665. He is

  1666. alive today.

  1667. He is

  1668. uniquely

  1669. qualified to

  1670. help you

  1671. in your

  1672. weakness.

  1673. What's keeping

  1674. you from

  1675. his throne?

  1676. Is it

  1677. your shame?

  1678. Is it

  1679. you don't

  1680. want to

  1681. come to

  1682. terms with

  1683. your sin?

  1684. Are you

  1685. just trying

  1686. to avoid

  1687. him?

  1688. Are you

  1689. just trying

  1690. to handle

  1691. your sinfulness

  1692. on your

  1693. terms?

  1694. You make

  1695. for a

  1696. lousy

  1697. mediator.

  1698. He is

  1699. uniquely

  1700. qualified.

  1701. He's

  1702. willing and

  1703. able,

  1704. and he's

  1705. qualified like

  1706. no other.

  1707. draw near

  1708. to him.

  1709. Don't

  1710. shrink back.

  1711. Don't go

  1712. back to

  1713. your

  1714. Levitical

  1715. priests.

  1716. Don't go

  1717. back to

  1718. your

  1719. self-appointed

  1720. priesthood.

  1721. Draw near

  1722. to Jesus

  1723. in your

  1724. weakness

  1725. and you

  1726. will find

  1727. help.

  1728. God

  1729. will

  1730. we all

  1731. have a

  1732. weakness,

  1733. a soft

  1734. spot to

  1735. sin,

  1736. craving to

  1737. sin.

  1738. It's

  1739. internal.

  1740. You're

  1741. going to

  1742. face it

  1743. this

  1744. afternoon.

  1745. You're

  1746. going to

  1747. face it

  1748. tonight.

  1749. You're

  1750. going to

  1751. face it

  1752. this week.

  1753. All of

  1754. us in

  1755. the room,

  1756. our

  1757. internal

  1758. sinful

  1759. nature,

  1760. this

  1761. weakness

  1762. that we

  1763. carry around

  1764. with us,

  1765. it's

  1766. going to

  1767. get

  1768. tempted.

  1769. Where

  1770. are you

  1771. going to

  1772. turn?

  1773. don't

  1774. shrink back

  1775. from Christ

  1776. in your

  1777. weakness.

  1778. Draw

  1779. near.

  1780. Draw

  1781. near in

  1782. your

  1783. most

  1784. gross

  1785. weakness.

  1786. Draw

  1787. near to

  1788. him with

  1789. confidence.

  1790. And

  1791. he'll

  1792. give you

  1793. grace at

  1794. just the

  1795. right time.

  1796. He's

  1797. willing and

  1798. able to

  1799. help.

  1800. He's

  1801. better

  1802. qualified to

  1803. help.

  1804. Now

  1805. repeat

  1806. after me.

  1807. as you

  1808. get ready

  1809. to go,

  1810. repeat

  1811. after me.

  1812. I want

  1813. you

  1814. holding

  1815. fast to

  1816. this.

  1817. Christ

  1818. is

  1819. my

  1820. risen

  1821. and

  1822. reigning

  1823. priest

  1824. and

  1825. king.

  1826. Draw

  1827. near to

  1828. him

  1829. this

  1830. week.

  1831. Let's

  1832. pray.

  1833. Lord

  1834. Jesus,

  1835. we do

  1836. have a

  1837. soft

  1838. spot

  1839. for

  1840. sin,

  1841. but we

  1842. love

  1843. you.

  1844. I

  1845. pray,

  1846. Father,

  1847. that you'd

  1848. pour out

  1849. your

  1850. spirit

  1851. on this

  1852. people

  1853. in this

  1854. room

  1855. and that

  1856. you would

  1857. convince

  1858. them

  1859. that your

  1860. throne of

  1861. grace

  1862. is a

  1863. place

  1864. of

  1865. welcome

  1866. for the

  1867. weak,

  1868. for the

  1869. tempted,

  1870. for those

  1871. who blew

  1872. it,

  1873. that you

  1874. welcomed

  1875. them,

  1876. that you

  1877. have grace

  1878. for them,

  1879. that you

  1880. want to

  1881. strengthen

  1882. them,

  1883. that you

  1884. want to

  1885. help them

  1886. hold fast

  1887. to you

  1888. all the way

  1889. to the

  1890. end.

  1891. God,

  1892. I do

  1893. pray that

  1894. you would

  1895. help us

  1896. to

  1897. remember

  1898. our

  1899. priest and

  1900. king who's

  1901. gone through

  1902. the heavenlies

  1903. and is at

  1904. the right

  1905. hand of

  1906. you,

  1907. majesty on

  1908. high,

  1909. and that

  1910. you invite

  1911. us in

  1912. and it's

  1913. blood-bought.

  1914. We pray this

  1915. in the name

  1916. of Jesus.

  1917. Amen.

  1918. Amen.

  1919. Amen.

  1920. Amen.

  1921. Amen.

  1922. Amen.

  1923. Amen.

  1924. Amen.
