  1. If you would open up your Bibles to 1 Corinthians chapter 15, it's in your New Testament, and it's on page 1142 of the Black Pew Bible in your pews in front of you.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  2. So 1142, and I'm going to read 1 Corinthians 15, 1 through 4.

  3. Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved.

  4. If you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

  5. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

  6. that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

  7. May God bless the hearing of His word.

  8. When I was a boy, my family went to a relative's funeral, and I was standing with my mom as we were walking by the open gasket of our relative who had died.

  9. And my mom had me touch our relative's hand.

  10. And it was the first time I ever experienced corpse cold.

  11. I knew instantaneously, dead people stayed dead.

  12. There are some people that are brought back from the brink of death.

  13. They're resuscitated.

  14. Minutes go by, but somehow they're able to be brought back from the brink.

  15. The claim of the Christian faith is that Jesus Christ was dead.

  16. Corpse cold dead.

  17. And on the third day, He was raised from the dead.

  18. Dead people stay dead.

  19. Unless you're Jesus Christ.

  20. According to the Christian gospel,

  21. Jesus Christ died by crucifixion on Friday,

  22. Nisan 14.

  23. Nisan is the Jewish word for the month in spring.

  24. He was crucified on Friday, Nisan 14, 80-30,

  25. and was raised from the dead on Sunday, Nisan 16, 80-30.

  26. At the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ are two vital claims.

  27. Christ died for our sins.

  28. And then He was raised from the dead on the third day.

  29. Christ died for our sins.

  30. Payment made.

  31. And Christ was raised on the third day.

  32. Payment accepted.

  33. Payment accepted.

  34. Both claims are absolutely necessary

  35. to make the Christian gospel good news.

  36. You remove either one, Christ's death or His resurrection,

  37. and you've got a worthless religion.

  38. But the gospel is this.

  39. Christ died for our sins,

  40. and was raised from the dead

  41. so that God could make a way for sinners

  42. to be rescued from His wrath

  43. and to be reconciled to Him in peace.

  44. The word gospel,

  45. we think of it as a religious term.

  46. But back in antiquity,

  47. back in the first century and before,

  48. it was not just a religious term.

  49. So it would be used in a military context

  50. where your army would win a battle

  51. and there would be this runner run into the town

  52. and they would announce the gospel of your army's victory.

  53. Or when there was the birth of an emperor,

  54. that news was announced as good news, gospel news.

  55. What you need to understand,

  56. in the first century,

  57. there were a lot of gospels.

  58. Just as in the 21st century.

  59. We just don't call them gospels,

  60. but we talk about them as good news.

  61. The good news of your political party

  62. that is proclaiming a hope for the future of our nation.

  63. The good news of the health industry.

  64. Did you know the U.S. health industry

  65. is a $5 trillion business?

  66. And there are a lot of people

  67. who are proclaiming good news

  68. for the future of your health.

  69. There's the gospel of hedonism

  70. that's proclaiming the hope

  71. in your next sexual encounter.

  72. There's the gospel, of course, of self.

  73. Where your hope is in yourself.

  74. All of these so-called gospels,

  75. though they espouse some kind of hope,

  76. they're actually hopeless.

  77. They're useless.

  78. When it comes to God's wrath,

  79. they provide no solutions.

  80. They just help you ignore it.

  81. Not the gospel of Jesus Christ, though.

  82. The gospel of Jesus Christ

  83. recognizes that our biggest problem

  84. as human beings

  85. is God's wrath.

  86. So this morning,

  87. I'm going to just unpack two parts,

  88. the two vital claims

  89. of the Christian gospel.

  90. That Christ died for our sins,

  91. payment made.

  92. And the second vital claim

  93. is that Christ was raised from the dead.

  94. And Christ's payment was accepted.

  95. If you're not a Christian in the room,

  96. what I want to show you this morning

  97. is the relevance

  98. of Christ's death

  99. and resurrection.

  100. You might not agree with it,

  101. but I just want to show it to you.

  102. I want you to see it.

  103. And if you're a Christian in the room,

  104. I want to help you be encouraged

  105. by the resurrection.

  106. Your Savior lives.

  107. He's alive.

  108. The gospel is of first importance.

  109. It's the most important message

  110. you will ever make a decision on

  111. because only the gospel gives you hope

  112. in the face of God's wrath.

  113. So let's look at this

  114. first vital claim of Christianity.

  115. It's in verse 3.

  116. Christ died for our sins.

  117. If you're here on Friday night,

  118. this is going to sound familiar,

  119. but not all of it.

  120. Christ died for our sins.

  121. For the gospel to be good news,

  122. you've got to be convinced

  123. of something.

  124. Sin.

  125. Sin is any thought,

  126. any feeling,

  127. any word,

  128. or deed

  129. that opposes God's holy character

  130. or opposes His perfect moral will.

  131. We commit sins in two ways.

  132. We commit sins by way of commission.

  133. We do what God says don't do.

  134. And omission.

  135. We don't do what God tells us to do.

  136. Jesus said,

  137. be perfect as your heavenly Father

  138. is perfect.

  139. And as soon as I say that,

  140. I'm guessing everyone in the room

  141. is saying,

  142. well, I'm not perfect.

  143. Well,

  144. anybody morally perfect

  145. in the room?

  146. Please raise your hand.

  147. You know,

  148. I was hoping there would be

  149. just one bold person

  150. because you know what I'd say?

  151. I'd ask that person,

  152. friend,

  153. do you live up to your own expectations,

  154. let alone God's?

  155. Imagine that God keeps track

  156. of your sins.

  157. And He keeps track of your sins

  158. with different sized black marbles.

  159. And every time you sin,

  160. whether that's omission

  161. or commission,

  162. whether that's in your head

  163. or with your mouth

  164. or with your body,

  165. you hear this plunk

  166. into a pickle barrel.

  167. Every one of those marbles,

  168. they're different sizes,

  169. but they're all black.

  170. And then every one

  171. is written the word wrath.

  172. Plunk.

  173. Plunk, plunk.

  174. You're going throughout your day.

  175. Plunk, plunk, plunk.

  176. Plunk.

  177. Could you imagine

  178. what happens in one day?

  179. How many black marbles

  180. you gain in a pickle barrel?

  181. How about a week?

  182. How about a month?

  183. How about a year?

  184. How about a decade?

  185. How many pickle barrels

  186. full of black marbles

  187. will you have?

  188. How about a lifetime?

  189. How about a lifetime?

  190. What this gets at is

  191. how much we sin.

  192. For all have sinned

  193. and fall short

  194. of the glory of God.

  195. And what we tend to do

  196. with all of this guilt

  197. for sin,

  198. real guilt

  199. for real sin

  200. against a real God

  201. is we tend to want

  202. to hide

  203. these pickle barrels

  204. full of black marbles.

  205. We want to keep them

  206. in places we don't see.

  207. We want to avoid them.

  208. We don't want to deal with them.

  209. We don't want to deal with them.

  210. But God's reaction

  211. to our sinning

  212. is far worse

  213. than a black marble.

  214. When we sin against

  215. a holy, eternal,

  216. just God,

  217. His reaction

  218. corresponds to that.

  219. He has a holy,

  220. eternal,

  221. just reaction.

  222. It's called

  223. His wrath.

  224. It's measured.

  225. It's precise.

  226. It's absolutely fair.

  227. Jesus talked about

  228. God's wrath

  229. in John 3, 36.

  230. He said,

  231. those who believe the Son

  232. have eternal life,

  233. but those who do not

  234. obey the Son,

  235. God's wrath

  236. remains on Him.

  237. In Romans 2, 5,

  238. we read this,

  239. that all those

  240. who have a hardened,

  241. penitent heart

  242. are storing up

  243. God's wrath

  244. for the day of wrath

  245. when God's judgment

  246. is revealed.

  247. You see,

  248. all of us,

  249. apart from Christ,

  250. we are

  251. piling up

  252. black marbles

  253. in pickle barrels.

  254. God's wrath

  255. fairly,

  256. justly

  257. stands against us.

  258. And the punishment

  259. for that

  260. is conscious,

  261. eternal,

  262. torment,

  263. fueled by God's wrath.

  264. The punishment

  265. fits the crime

  266. when you sin

  267. against eternal God.

  268. This is why

  269. there's no

  270. political good news

  271. that's going to

  272. address God's wrath.

  273. There's no

  274. economic good news

  275. that's going to

  276. help you

  277. on the day of wrath.

  278. There's no

  279. social,

  280. psychological

  281. good news

  282. for you.

  283. Your sin

  284. is real.

  285. God's wrath

  286. is real.

  287. And we've got

  288. to deal with it.

  289. God holds

  290. every one of us

  291. responsible.

  292. Do you know

  293. what our biggest

  294. problem is?

  295. God's wrath.

  296. And that's why

  297. two little words

  298. should start

  299. to sing

  300. to your soul.

  301. Christ died.

  302. In 1 Corinthians

  303. 15, 3,

  304. we read

  305. that Christ

  306. died for

  307. our sins.

  308. Christ

  309. died for

  310. our sins

  311. is really good news.

  312. It's the first

  313. vital claim

  314. of the gospel.

  315. Christ is a title.

  316. It means Messiah.

  317. And the Old Testament

  318. is full of prophecies

  319. of the coming

  320. Messiah.

  321. We looked at one

  322. Friday night.

  323. It was Isaiah 9, 6.

  324. You remember it.

  325. This is Christmas time.

  326. A son is given.

  327. A child has been born.

  328. A human being

  329. given to us.

  330. His name shall be called

  331. Wonderful Counselor,

  332. Mighty God,

  333. Everlasting Father,

  334. Prince of Peace.

  335. The government

  336. shall be

  337. unpunished shoulders.

  338. He's going to sit

  339. on the throne of David.

  340. His kingdom

  341. will be

  342. everlasting kingdom

  343. without no end.

  344. You see,

  345. what Isaiah 9, 6, and 7

  346. was talking about

  347. is the coming

  348. of the Christ.

  349. Totally God,

  350. eternal.

  351. Totally man,

  352. sinless human being.

  353. Earlier in Isaiah 7,

  354. you will know this.

  355. He goes by a different title,

  356. Emmanuel.

  357. God with us.

  358. His name is Jesus.

  359. God in the flesh

  360. who lived a sinless life.

  361. And this perfect God-man

  362. is the perfect go-between

  363. a holy God

  364. and a sinful humanity

  365. who's piling up

  366. black marvels.

  367. The thing about this Emmanuel

  368. totally God,

  369. totally man

  370. is He died

  371. as a common criminal

  372. on a Roman cross.

  373. And the question is,

  374. why?

  375. Why would

  376. the sinless,

  377. perfect God-man

  378. die on a cross

  379. for our sins?

  380. When you hear those

  381. three words,

  382. for our sins,

  383. I want to put

  384. another three words

  385. in your head.

  386. Penal substitutionary atonement.

  387. Penal.

  388. Christ's death

  389. was a penalty.

  390. He suffered a penalty.

  391. The penalty of God's wrath.

  392. Substitutionary.

  393. He died in our place.

  394. He bore God's eternal wrath.

  395. It's atoning,

  396. which means He removed

  397. the penalty of sin

  398. by satisfying God's wrath.

  399. Check this out.

  400. The eternal second person

  401. of the Trinity,

  402. Jesus the Son,

  403. bore for six hours

  404. on that first Good Friday

  405. all of God's wrath

  406. for all of eternity

  407. on Himself

  408. so that there is no more wrath.

  409. Now,

  410. our biggest problem

  411. is God's wrath.

  412. in the good news

  413. of Jesus Christ

  414. addresses it

  415. head on.

  416. Payment made.

  417. He has made a way

  418. to remove

  419. all of your black marbles,

  420. all of your pickle barrels,

  421. all of it.

  422. And we're told

  423. this is in accordance

  424. with the Scriptures.

  425. In Isaiah 53,

  426. we have this wonderful prophecy

  427. of the coming

  428. of a suffering servant,

  429. the Christ.

  430. And that passage

  431. describes Him

  432. in the most amazing ways

  433. as a substitute.

  434. He would be pierced

  435. for our transgressions.

  436. On Him would be laid

  437. the chastisement

  438. that brings us peace.

  439. What this means is this.

  440. The death of Jesus

  441. has always been

  442. a part of God's plan.

  443. God's loving plan

  444. to rescue sinners

  445. has always,

  446. always had in mind

  447. centrally

  448. the death

  449. of His Son.

  450. In God's love,

  451. God has made a way

  452. to rescue sinners

  453. and remain just

  454. through the death

  455. of Jesus Christ.

  456. This is good news.

  457. This is the power

  458. of the cross.

  459. This is the first vital

  460. claim of the gospel.

  461. This is payment made.

  462. But I've got to ask you

  463. something.

  464. Can you really know?

  465. How do you know

  466. that Christ's death

  467. on the cross

  468. satisfied God's wrath

  469. for your sin?

  470. How can you know that?

  471. Well, let's move

  472. to the second vital claim.

  473. Payment accepted.

  474. Christ raised.

  475. He was raised

  476. on the third day

  477. in accordance

  478. with the scriptures.

  479. 1 Corinthians 15.

  480. 4.

  481. The He of He was raised,

  482. of course,

  483. is Jesus.

  484. Emmanuel.

  485. Totally God.

  486. Totally man.

  487. Crucified on Friday.

  488. Nisan 14.

  489. Laid in a tomb.

  490. The tomb of Joseph

  491. of Arimathea.

  492. If you touched him,

  493. corpse cold.

  494. No brain activity.

  495. All of his vital organs

  496. were no longer functioning.

  497. They had ceased.

  498. He would be clinically dead.

  499. The Bible is claiming

  500. very clearly

  501. He was raised.

  502. He was raised

  503. on Nisan 16.

  504. Where did this take place?

  505. The tomb of Joseph

  506. of Arimathea.

  507. This is the tomb

  508. on Good Friday.

  509. There are these women

  510. who were at the cross.

  511. They saw Jesus crucified.

  512. They saw His body

  513. brought down.

  514. They were with

  515. Joseph of Arimathea

  516. when they brought

  517. Jesus' body

  518. to the tomb.

  519. That's the site

  520. of the resurrection.

  521. That's the empty tomb.

  522. When?

  523. Early Sunday morning

  524. on Nisan 16.

  525. Before dawn.

  526. These three women

  527. witnessed something.

  528. They were coming back

  529. to prepare,

  530. finish preparing

  531. His body.

  532. and the stone

  533. that covered

  534. the entrance

  535. of the tomb

  536. had been rolled away.

  537. There was an angel

  538. and the angel said,

  539. what are you doing

  540. looking for

  541. the living among the dead?

  542. He's not here.

  543. He's risen.

  544. Not being resuscitated.

  545. not some kind of

  546. just the spirit

  547. of Jesus

  548. being raised.

  549. Not the good thought

  550. of Jesus

  551. being raised

  552. from the dead.

  553. Not a group

  554. hallucination

  555. of Jesus

  556. being raised

  557. from the dead.

  558. This claim

  559. is that Jesus

  560. was bodily

  561. raised

  562. from the dead.

  563. and dead people

  564. don't,

  565. they're supposed

  566. to stay dead.

  567. Except Jesus.

  568. How did that happen?

  569. Some of you

  570. in the room

  571. may say,

  572. well,

  573. that's ridiculous

  574. because dead people

  575. stay dead.

  576. Scientifically impossible.

  577. Being raised

  578. from the dead

  579. does not comply

  580. with the laws

  581. of nature.

  582. And you know

  583. what I would say?

  584. Spot on.

  585. This is not

  586. complying

  587. with the laws

  588. of nature.

  589. The bodily

  590. resurrection

  591. of Jesus Christ

  592. from the dead

  593. is supernatural.

  594. It is a miracle.

  595. It is a working,

  596. miraculous working

  597. of God

  598. to raise

  599. God the Son

  600. from the dead.

  601. at the heart

  602. of the Christian

  603. faith

  604. are claims.

  605. And this

  606. claim

  607. of the bodily

  608. resurrection

  609. of Jesus Christ

  610. is a miraculous

  611. claim.

  612. Now,

  613. if the bodily

  614. resurrection

  615. of Jesus Christ

  616. is true,

  617. it changes

  618. everything.

  619. It's extraordinary.

  620. it's absolutely

  621. vital to the

  622. Christian gospel.

  623. You remove

  624. the bodily

  625. resurrection

  626. of Christ

  627. and you are

  628. left with a

  629. dead,

  630. worthless

  631. Christianity

  632. that can't

  633. do anything.

  634. But if it's

  635. true,

  636. but if the

  637. resurrection

  638. is true,

  639. if Jesus

  640. really was

  641. raised from the

  642. dead

  643. practically 2,000

  644. years ago,

  645. what it would

  646. mean is that

  647. he is alive

  648. today.

  649. In 1 Corinthians

  650. 15, 5-8,

  651. if you kept

  652. on reading,

  653. the apostle

  654. Paul who

  655. wrote this,

  656. he wants to

  657. persuade us

  658. of something.

  659. Notice,

  660. I'm going to

  661. try to emphasize

  662. a repeated

  663. word.

  664. In verse 4,

  665. we read,

  666. and that he

  667. was buried,

  668. that he was

  669. raised on the

  670. third day in

  671. accordance with

  672. the scriptures,

  673. and that he

  674. appeared to

  675. Cephas.

  676. It's another

  677. name for

  678. Peter.

  679. And after he

  680. appeared to

  681. Cephas,

  682. then to the

  683. twelve.

  684. So that's

  685. another

  686. appearing.

  687. Verse 6,

  688. then he

  689. appeared to

  690. more than

  691. 500 brothers

  692. at one time,

  693. most of whom

  694. are still alive,

  695. though some

  696. have fallen

  697. asleep.

  698. Then he

  699. appeared to

  700. James,

  701. then to all

  702. the apostles

  703. he appeared.

  704. last of all,

  705. as to one

  706. untimely

  707. born,

  708. he appeared

  709. also to

  710. me.

  711. Do you know

  712. what all this

  713. appearing is

  714. about?

  715. This is

  716. eyewitnesses.

  717. The apostle

  718. Paul is writing

  719. to this church

  720. in Corinth,

  721. and he's

  722. saying,

  723. hey, I know

  724. you've got some

  725. questions about

  726. the resurrection

  727. of Jesus

  728. Christ.

  729. I know

  730. 500 people

  731. that you can

  732. talk to

  733. who are alive

  734. today.

  735. I've got their

  736. cell phone

  737. numbers,

  738. I've got their

  739. email addresses,

  740. you just name

  741. it, I'll get

  742. them to

  743. them so you

  744. can talk to

  745. them.

  746. It's the

  747. eyewitness

  748. testimony of

  749. the risen

  750. Christ.

  751. If I were a

  752. defense attorney

  753. living in the

  754. first century

  755. and I had to

  756. defend the

  757. bodily resurrection

  758. of Jesus

  759. Christ, do you

  760. know what I

  761. would do?

  762. I would subpoena

  763. all 500 plus

  764. witnesses.

  765. And I would

  766. just have them

  767. just take the

  768. stand one at a

  769. time.

  770. Start with

  771. Mary Magdalene.

  772. I went to

  773. the tomb

  774. early Sunday

  775. morning.

  776. I was expecting

  777. to find the

  778. tomb shut

  779. still.

  780. I wasn't sure

  781. how to open

  782. it up, but

  783. when I got

  784. there, stone

  785. had been

  786. rolled away

  787. and there was

  788. an angel

  789. there.

  790. I was

  791. overwhelmed.

  792. I started

  793. to weep.

  794. I was outside

  795. the tomb

  796. and then I

  797. heard my

  798. name spoken

  799. by Jesus.

  800. I dropped

  801. at his feet.

  802. I started

  803. to touch

  804. him and

  805. he said,

  806. stop touching

  807. me.

  808. Or I'd

  809. bring up

  810. Cleopas.

  811. Luke 24,

  812. one of the

  813. two who

  814. is walking

  815. away from

  816. Jerusalem

  817. with another

  818. guy and

  819. they're on

  820. their way

  821. from Jerusalem

  822. on their way

  823. to Emmaus

  824. and they

  825. were talking

  826. as they

  827. went and

  828. all of a

  829. sudden,

  830. Cleopas would

  831. say this,

  832. we were

  833. walking and

  834. a third

  835. person came

  836. up and

  837. started asking

  838. us questions

  839. about what

  840. had happened

  841. in Jerusalem

  842. and we're

  843. like,

  844. you haven't

  845. heard?

  846. Jesus is

  847. crucified,

  848. we thought

  849. he was the

  850. guy,

  851. we thought

  852. he was the

  853. Messiah and

  854. now it's

  855. the third

  856. day?

  857. Cleopas would

  858. go on to

  859. say,

  860. and then he

  861. started to

  862. explain to

  863. us all

  864. that was

  865. true of the

  866. Christ from

  867. the scriptures

  868. and did

  869. our hearts

  870. burn.

  871. We sat

  872. down to

  873. eat and

  874. it's when he

  875. broke bread

  876. that I

  877. recognized

  878. him.

  879. It was

  880. Christ and

  881. then he

  882. was gone.

  883. And then

  884. there's

  885. Thomas,

  886. doubting

  887. Thomas.

  888. Yeah,

  889. I definitely

  890. doubted him.

  891. I said,

  892. I got a

  893. seat with

  894. my own

  895. eyes.

  896. And then

  897. he appeared

  898. to us and

  899. he came up

  900. to me and

  901. he said,

  902. Thomas,

  903. put your

  904. finger here

  905. in my

  906. hand.

  907. Put your

  908. finger here

  909. where the

  910. spear went

  911. into my

  912. side.

  913. I

  914. believed

  915. on the

  916. spot.

  917. My

  918. God and

  919. my

  920. King.

  921. Then I'd

  922. bring the

  923. other,

  924. the 11

  925. disciples

  926. through.

  927. Get them

  928. up on the

  929. stand.

  930. Have them

  931. share each

  932. one after

  933. another,

  934. how Jesus

  935. appeared to

  936. them,

  937. how he

  938. appeared to

  939. them in

  940. the upper

  941. room,

  942. and how

  943. he said,

  944. does anybody

  945. have anything

  946. to eat?

  947. And he

  948. ate broiled

  949. fish with

  950. us.

  951. You see,

  952. the Gospels

  953. go to

  954. great lengths

  955. to share

  956. eyewitness

  957. accounts of

  958. the resurrection

  959. of Jesus

  960. Christ.

  961. And the

  962. question is,

  963. is it

  964. true?

  965. Did it

  966. happen?

  967. And it's the

  968. question that you

  969. need to answer

  970. this morning.

  971. is Jesus

  972. risen from

  973. the dead?

  974. Is he

  975. alive?

  976. The

  977. entirety of

  978. the Christian

  979. faith rises

  980. or falls on

  981. the miraculous

  982. bodily

  983. resurrection of

  984. Jesus Christ.

  985. No

  986. resurrection,

  987. no

  988. Christianity.

  989. No

  990. resurrection,

  991. no rescue

  992. from God's

  993. wrath.

  994. All of

  995. those black

  996. marbles and

  997. all of those

  998. pickle barrels

  999. still stand

  1000. against us.

  1001. In 1

  1002. Corinthians 15

  1003. 17,

  1004. Paul writes,

  1005. if Christ

  1006. has not been

  1007. raised,

  1008. your faith

  1009. is futile

  1010. and you're

  1011. still in

  1012. your sins.

  1013. What the

  1014. resurrection

  1015. of Jesus

  1016. Christ does

  1017. is it

  1018. declares

  1019. that the

  1020. payment

  1021. Christ made

  1022. on the

  1023. cross was

  1024. fully accepted

  1025. by God.

  1026. payment

  1027. received,

  1028. proof of

  1029. purchase,

  1030. the

  1031. resurrected

  1032. Christ,

  1033. which means

  1034. this,

  1035. Christ died

  1036. on this

  1037. on 14,

  1038. payment made,

  1039. Christ was

  1040. raised on

  1041. this on 16,

  1042. payment accepted,

  1043. purchase

  1044. received.

  1045. All of

  1046. God's

  1047. wrath

  1048. for all

  1049. of our

  1050. sins

  1051. can be

  1052. completely

  1053. forgiven

  1054. and

  1055. pardoned.

  1056. we read

  1057. here that

  1058. he was

  1059. raised

  1060. on the

  1061. third

  1062. day.

  1063. That

  1064. phrase

  1065. third day

  1066. is

  1067. significant.

  1068. Did you

  1069. know that

  1070. the reason

  1071. why the

  1072. Christian

  1073. church

  1074. gathers

  1075. on Sunday

  1076. and not

  1077. on the

  1078. Sabbath

  1079. Saturday

  1080. is because

  1081. it's the

  1082. day that

  1083. Jesus was

  1084. raised?

  1085. the

  1086. Lord's

  1087. day,

  1088. the

  1089. first

  1090. day of

  1091. the

  1092. week.

  1093. Every

  1094. time we

  1095. gather

  1096. church,

  1097. we're

  1098. saying

  1099. he's

  1100. alive.

  1101. And

  1102. then there's

  1103. Jesus'

  1104. own

  1105. predictions.

  1106. In the

  1107. Gospel of

  1108. Mark,

  1109. Jesus

  1110. predicts

  1111. his own

  1112. death and

  1113. resurrection

  1114. three times.

  1115. Mark

  1116. 8.

  1117. 31,

  1118. Mark

  1119. 9.

  1120. 30 and

  1121. 31,

  1122. Mark

  1123. 10.

  1124. 33 and

  1125. 34.

  1126. three times

  1127. before he

  1128. dies and

  1129. is raised.

  1130. Now, if

  1131. you're a

  1132. skeptic in

  1133. the room,

  1134. you might

  1135. be thinking

  1136. something like

  1137. this.

  1138. Well,

  1139. maybe that

  1140. Gospel writer

  1141. put those

  1142. predictions

  1143. in after

  1144. the fact to

  1145. make it look

  1146. like Jesus

  1147. fulfilled his

  1148. own words

  1149. because he

  1150. wanted to

  1151. make it look

  1152. like Jesus

  1153. is totally

  1154. God,

  1155. totally man.

  1156. Another

  1157. explanation,

  1158. is this.

  1159. They're

  1160. accurate.

  1161. That's how

  1162. they were

  1163. recorded because

  1164. that's how

  1165. it happened.

  1166. That Jesus

  1167. himself said

  1168. three and

  1169. different times

  1170. that he

  1171. would suffer

  1172. and die

  1173. and on the

  1174. third day

  1175. be raised

  1176. from the

  1177. dead.

  1178. Do you know

  1179. what that

  1180. means?

  1181. Jesus

  1182. predicted the

  1183. manner of

  1184. his own

  1185. death,

  1186. which you're

  1187. like, well,

  1188. some people

  1189. can do

  1190. that.

  1191. And then

  1192. he predicted

  1193. that he'd be

  1194. raised from

  1195. the dead.

  1196. Nobody does

  1197. that.

  1198. And then he

  1199. predicted the

  1200. day he'd be

  1201. raised from

  1202. the dead.

  1203. dead.

  1204. What does that

  1205. say about

  1206. Jesus?

  1207. He's one of

  1208. a kind.

  1209. Totally God,

  1210. totally man,

  1211. willing to give

  1212. his life

  1213. payment,

  1214. and three days

  1215. later, take it up

  1216. again.

  1217. Payment

  1218. received.

  1219. the gospel

  1220. has these two

  1221. vital claims,

  1222. Christ's death

  1223. and Christ's

  1224. resurrection,

  1225. and both are

  1226. displays of

  1227. God's power.

  1228. Beyond Jesus'

  1229. own prediction,

  1230. his resurrection

  1231. on the third

  1232. day is in

  1233. accordance with

  1234. the Scriptures.

  1235. Maybe you're

  1236. aware of the

  1237. Old Testament

  1238. passages that

  1239. speak of

  1240. Christ's

  1241. resurrection.

  1242. Here are

  1243. three.

  1244. Psalm 1610,

  1245. Psalm 1101,

  1246. Isaiah 5310.

  1247. But Jesus

  1248. himself points

  1249. to Jonah

  1250. chapter 117.

  1251. Jonah

    Jonah 2:1

  1252. chapter 2

  1253. verse 1.

  1254. Jesus himself

  1255. in Matthew

  1256. 12 points

  1257. to Jonah,

  1258. a book of

  1259. the Old

  1260. Testament.

  1261. And he

  1262. says that

  1263. Jonah was

  1264. in the belly

  1265. of the whale

  1266. three days and

  1267. three nights.

  1268. It's a sign

  1269. of the Son

  1270. of Man being

  1271. in the belly

  1272. of the earth

  1273. three days and

  1274. three nights.

  1275. You see,

  1276. what Jesus is

  1277. saying is,

  1278. my death and

  1279. my resurrection

  1280. is in

  1281. accordance with

  1282. the Scriptures.

  1283. Which means

  1284. not only Christ's

  1285. death is part of

  1286. God's plan,

  1287. but Christ's

  1288. resurrection is

  1289. part of God's

  1290. plan to rescue

  1291. sinners from

  1292. his wrath in

  1293. order to reconcile

  1294. them to

  1295. himself in

  1296. peace.

  1297. There's no

  1298. other gospel.

  1299. There's no

  1300. other good

  1301. news.

  1302. You cannot

  1303. find refuge

  1304. and help

  1305. from God's

  1306. wrath in

  1307. anything else.

  1308. The gospel

  1309. is God's

  1310. power unto

  1311. salvation.

  1312. God's

  1313. salvation.

  1314. God's

  1315. salvation.

  1316. God's

  1317. salvation.

  1318. God's

  1319. salvation.

  1320. God's

  1321. God's

  1322. God's

  1323. salvation.

  1324. God's

  1325. salvation.

  1326. We've

  1327. looked at

  1328. these two

  1329. vital claims

  1330. of the gospel

  1331. of Jesus

  1332. Christ.

  1333. Let's close

  1334. by applying

  1335. it.

  1336. Christ died

  1337. for our

  1338. sins in

  1339. accordance with

  1340. the scriptures

  1341. and Christ

  1342. has been

  1343. raised on

  1344. the third

  1345. day in

  1346. accordance

  1347. with the

  1348. scriptures.

  1349. Both

  1350. display

  1351. God's

  1352. love and

  1353. power to

  1354. rescue

  1355. sinners from

  1356. his wrath

  1357. and to

  1358. reconcile

  1359. them to

  1360. himself in

  1361. peace.

  1362. These are

  1363. the two

  1364. vital claims.

  1365. You remove

  1366. either one,

  1367. you don't

  1368. have

  1369. Christianity.

  1370. You have

  1371. nothing that

  1372. can save

  1373. you from

  1374. God's

  1375. wrath.

  1376. So what

  1377. difference does

  1378. that make?

  1379. So what?

  1380. Who cares?

  1381. If you're a

  1382. non-Christian in

  1383. the room,

  1384. maybe you grew

  1385. up in a

  1386. family that

  1387. never went to

  1388. church,

  1389. never heard the

  1390. gospel before,

  1391. you're not

  1392. familiar with

  1393. the Bible,

  1394. this is all

  1395. new to you,

  1396. I'm so glad

  1397. that you are

  1398. here.

  1399. Or maybe you

  1400. have grown up

  1401. in the church

  1402. and you're

  1403. maybe your

  1404. parents are

  1405. Christians.

  1406. Maybe you

  1407. have been

  1408. coming to

  1409. church all

  1410. of your

  1411. life and

  1412. you've been

  1413. hearing what

  1414. this preacher

  1415. has been

  1416. saying again

  1417. and again

  1418. and again,

  1419. but you've

  1420. never decided.

  1421. You're not

  1422. a Christian.

  1423. Your parents

  1424. are Christians,

  1425. but you're not

  1426. a Christian.

  1427. Whether you

  1428. are coming

  1429. out of a

  1430. non-Christian

  1431. context or a

  1432. Christian context

  1433. and you are

  1434. not a

  1435. Christian,

  1436. you need to

  1437. decide.

  1438. whether the

  1439. Christian gospel

  1440. in all of

  1441. its miraculous

  1442. claims is

  1443. true or not,

  1444. you need to

  1445. decide that

  1446. yourself.

  1447. Don't let

  1448. someone else

  1449. decide that

  1450. for you.

  1451. You need to

  1452. decide that.

  1453. And then

  1454. when you

  1455. decide,

  1456. if you decide

  1457. no, that's

  1458. not true,

  1459. decision

  1460. respected.

  1461. Grieved,

  1462. but respected.

  1463. But if you

  1464. decide that

  1465. it is true,

  1466. you will

  1467. then need

  1468. to renounce

  1469. all other

  1470. so-called

  1471. gospels.

  1472. You've got to

  1473. turn from

  1474. those in

  1475. order to

  1476. turn to the

  1477. one true

  1478. gospel of

  1479. Jesus Christ

  1480. by which

  1481. you alone

  1482. can be

  1483. saved.

  1484. And then

  1485. this is what

  1486. you say.

  1487. Romans 10

  1488. 9, if you

  1489. confess with

  1490. your mouth

  1491. that Jesus

  1492. is Lord

  1493. and you

  1494. believe in

  1495. your heart

  1496. that God

  1497. raised him

  1498. from the

  1499. dead,

  1500. you will

  1501. be saved.

  1502. You call

  1503. out to him,

  1504. the risen

  1505. one who is

  1506. alive.

  1507. You say,

  1508. Lord Jesus,

  1509. I don't

  1510. want to

  1511. have to

  1512. deal with

  1513. these pickle

  1514. barrels of

  1515. black marbles

  1516. for eternity.

  1517. I will

  1518. take what

  1519. you're given.

  1520. I believe

  1521. you are

  1522. Savior and

  1523. Lord risen

  1524. from the

  1525. dead,

  1526. and at

  1527. that moment

  1528. you will

  1529. be saved.

  1530. Today's the

  1531. day.

  1532. If you

  1533. haven't put

  1534. your trust

  1535. in Christ

  1536. alone before,

  1537. there's no

  1538. better day

  1539. than Resurrection

  1540. Sunday to do

  1541. that.

  1542. And I

  1543. would urge

  1544. you to do

  1545. that today.

  1546. I'll be

  1547. down here

  1548. after the

  1549. service.

  1550. You can

  1551. come down

  1552. and talk

  1553. to me.

  1554. I'll be

  1555. happy to

  1556. pray with

  1557. you unto

  1558. that end.

  1559. Remember

  1560. that Jesus

  1561. is alive,

  1562. and when you

  1563. become a

  1564. Christian,

  1565. you are

  1566. entering into

  1567. a relationship

  1568. with him

  1569. as a

  1570. 21st century

  1571. disciple,

  1572. follower.

  1573. There's

  1574. nothing like

  1575. it.

  1576. But if you're

  1577. a Christian

  1578. in the

  1579. room,

  1580. what

  1581. difference

  1582. does the

  1583. resurrection

  1584. make for

  1585. you?

  1586. I want

  1587. to encourage

  1588. you.

  1589. If you

  1590. came into

  1591. the building

  1592. with some

  1593. degree of

  1594. doubt,

  1595. you've been

  1596. wrestling back

  1597. and forth

  1598. with,

  1599. is this

  1600. Christianity

  1601. thing true

  1602. or not?

  1603. I find

  1604. there's no

  1605. better help

  1606. than making

  1607. a beeline

  1608. to the

  1609. empty tomb.

  1610. And to be

  1611. able to ask

  1612. yourself,

  1613. well,

  1614. is it

  1615. true?

  1616. Is the

  1617. tomb empty?

  1618. Is Jesus

  1619. risen from

  1620. the dead?

  1621. And that

  1622. historic

  1623. event,

  1624. miraculous,

  1625. it is a

  1626. tremendous

  1627. source of

  1628. encouragement

  1629. for those

  1630. who are

  1631. wavering.

  1632. So if you're

  1633. a wavering

  1634. Christian,

  1635. focus on

  1636. the resurrection

  1637. of Christ,

  1638. that it

  1639. happened,

  1640. it's true,

  1641. and then

  1642. you put

  1643. your doubt

  1644. in the

  1645. grave.

  1646. Maybe you

  1647. came into

  1648. here discouraged.

  1649. You're a

  1650. Christian,

  1651. you've been

  1652. slogging it

  1653. out with

  1654. sin,

  1655. you're more

  1656. aware of

  1657. how many

  1658. decisions you

  1659. make that

  1660. are not

  1661. pleasing to

  1662. God,

  1663. that are

  1664. pleasing to

  1665. God.

  1666. You know

  1667. what?

  1668. I've got

  1669. good news

  1670. for you.

  1671. Christ's

  1672. death and

  1673. resurrection.

  1674. Romans 6

  1675. says that

  1676. the moment

  1677. you believed

  1678. Jesus,

  1679. you were

  1680. united to

  1681. Christ in

  1682. his death

  1683. and resurrection,

  1684. which means

  1685. you are now

  1686. dead to sin

  1687. and alive to

  1688. God in

  1689. Christ Jesus,

  1690. which means

  1691. sin is no

  1692. longer your

  1693. master.

  1694. And sin

  1695. no longer

  1696. condemns you.

  1697. All of those

  1698. pickle barrels

  1699. full of black

  1700. marbles have

  1701. been removed

  1702. by Christ's

  1703. death and

  1704. resurrection.

  1705. if you're

  1706. struggling with

  1707. sin,

  1708. make a

  1709. beeline to

  1710. the gospel.

  1711. Christ's

  1712. death and

  1713. resurrection.

  1714. You've been

  1715. united to

  1716. Christ in

  1717. his death

  1718. and resurrection.

  1719. Or maybe

  1720. you came into

  1721. this sanctuary

  1722. this Easter

  1723. Sunday and

  1724. you are

  1725. hopeless because

  1726. of some

  1727. situation that

  1728. you're facing

  1729. with relationships

  1730. or financial

  1731. situation or

  1732. some kind of

  1733. vocational

  1734. situation.

  1735. Can I have

  1736. you repeat

  1737. after me?

  1738. Christ is

  1739. my

  1740. risen and

  1741. reigning

  1742. high priest

  1743. and king

  1744. the anchor

  1745. of my soul.

  1746. There are no

  1747. dead ends if

  1748. you have a

  1749. living Savior.

  1750. If your

  1751. Savior lives,

  1752. there are no

  1753. dead ends.

  1754. He's always

  1755. working on

  1756. your behalf.

  1757. Finally,

  1758. this is for

  1759. more of a

  1760. select group.

  1761. Those whose

  1762. earthly tents

  1763. are wasting

  1764. away.

  1765. You're piling

  1766. up the

  1767. mileage.

  1768. Christ's

  1769. bodily

  1770. resurrection

  1771. from the

  1772. dead

  1773. sets a

  1774. precedent

  1775. because we

  1776. too will

  1777. be made

  1778. like him.

  1779. In 1

  1780. Corinthians

  1781. 1551,

  1782. later on in

  1783. this passage,

  1784. the Apostle

  1785. Paul writes,

  1786. in the

  1787. twinkling of

  1788. an eye,

  1789. at the

  1790. last trumpet,

  1791. those whose

  1792. bodies are

  1793. clothed in

  1794. what is

  1795. perishable

  1796. will put

  1797. on the

  1798. imperishable.

  1799. Those bodies

  1800. of mortality

  1801. will put

  1802. on immortality.

  1803. You will

  1804. receive a

  1805. resurrected

  1806. body that

  1807. doesn't

  1808. creak

  1809. anymore.

  1810. In fact,

  1811. 1 John 3

  1812. 2 says,

  1813. when he

  1814. appears,

  1815. we will see

  1816. him and

  1817. we will

  1818. become like

  1819. him as

  1820. he is in

  1821. his

  1822. resurrected

  1823. glory.

  1824. Take

  1825. one,

  1826. Christian,

  1827. tuck it

  1828. in and

  1829. be encouraged.

  1830. It wouldn't

  1831. be true if

  1832. Jesus hadn't

  1833. been raised

  1834. from the

  1835. dead.

  1836. There are a

  1837. lot of

  1838. so-called

  1839. gospels out

  1840. there, but

  1841. there's only

  1842. one gospel.

  1843. The gospel of

  1844. Jesus Christ,

  1845. payment made,

  1846. payment received,

  1847. Christ died,

  1848. Christ raised,

  1849. that can

  1850. deliver sinners

  1851. from their

  1852. greatest

  1853. problem,

  1854. God's wrath,

  1855. and then

  1856. reunite them

  1857. to himself

  1858. in peace.

  1859. What a

  1860. savior.

  1861. He is

  1862. risen.

  1863. Let's pray.

  1864. risen Lord

  1865. Jesus,

  1866. there is

  1867. none like

  1868. you,

  1869. and because

  1870. of who you

  1871. are and

  1872. what you

  1873. have done,

  1874. it is our

  1875. joy to

  1876. confess you

  1877. as our

  1878. Lord and

  1879. live with you

  1880. as the

  1881. treasure center

  1882. of our

  1883. lives,

  1884. the controlling

  1885. center of

  1886. our lives.

  1887. Lord, we

  1888. are no longer

  1889. our own,

  1890. but yours,

  1891. and we

  1892. will follow

  1893. you with

  1894. joy all

  1895. the days of

  1896. our life

  1897. until that

  1898. twinkling of

  1899. an eye,

  1900. and we

  1901. are with

  1902. you,

  1903. wearing

  1904. immortality.

  1905. Amen.
