  1. This morning, typically on a Sunday morning, I'm preaching through a passage of scripture.

  2. ! This morning is more of a topical sermon because of Membership Sunday.

  3. ! I get to remind you of something.

  4. !

  5. Together, following Jesus.

  6. In all three words, matter.

  7. And so, the most important word is Jesus.

  8. And the way that we talk about Jesus is that He is the controlling center of our life.

  9. He's our one-consuming passion, our all-governing reality.

  10. He is the treasure center of our lives.

  11. And so, we individually and corporately live for Him.

  12. And so, we follow Jesus.

  13. And that word for following, what's that to trigger in your mind is this idea of discipleship.

  14. That we are to deny ourselves, take up our cross, follow Him every day.

  15. And not just individually, we as a church are following Jesus because He is so worth it.

  16. And it's that first word, together, that this Membership Sunday is so poignant about.

  17. We're mutually committed to one another as we're together following Jesus.

  18. And so, think about our church as a pack of disciples who are looking to live for Jesus together.

  19. Here's the thing.

  20. We suffer from what Paul Tripp calls theological amnesia.

  21. We forget who we are.

  22. We forget that Jesus is who He is.

  23. And so, this morning, I want to remind you of who you are as a blood-bought follower of Jesus.

  24. And that we follow Him together.

  25. When someone becomes a Christian, they're converted.

  26. And typically, when you may hear the word conversion, you may think about a decision made for Christ.

  27. And conversion does involve a decision made for Christ.

  28. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

  29. Did you know that conversion is actually this radical reorientation of who you are?

  30. It is a fundamental changing of a person.

  31. The Bible talks about it as someone who is going from darkness into light.

  32. It talks about someone who is dead in their sin being made alive in Christ.

  33. It talks about someone who is converted in Christ being a new creation.

  34. It uses some really strong, important language.

  35. And so, it's more than a decision.

  36. It's a radical change of who you are.

  37. Many of you have heard this illustration before.

  38. It's one of my favorites.

  39. Back in the 16th, 17th century, there's a guy named Copernicus.

  40. He was a Renaissance man.

  41. He was a Christian.

  42. He was a Christian.

  43. And pre-Copernicus, most of the world thought that the sun orbited the earth.

  44. It's called a geocentric solar system.

  45. But what Copernicus did, he made this discovery.

  46. He realized this just by observation that we live in a heliocentric solar system.

  47. That the earth orbits the sun.

  48. Now, here's why that matters.

  49. We've always lived in a heliocentric solar system.

  50. What Copernicus did was he just brought people into the reality of that.

  51. It's always been that way.

  52. And so it is with becoming a Christian.

  53. It's a Copernican realization.

  54. It's when we're born, we're born in sin.

  55. And we're born under this false pretense that it's all about us.

  56. That we are the hero of our own stories.

  57. That's what sin does.

  58. It just kind of reduces your world to you at the center of it.

  59. And everything orbits you, including God.

  60. But when someone believes in Jesus, and someone believes what we talked about last weekend,

  61. that Christ died for their sins and was raised from the dead.

  62. He went into the tomb dead and came out of the tomb alive.

  63. When someone realizes that, sees that, the Lord Jesus brings them into reality.

  64. And that the reality is that he is the controlling center of all things.

  65. He's always been.

  66. And so conversion is being brought into reality.

  67. Through the blood and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  68. You're delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of the beloved son.

  69. You've made a new creation.

  70. The old is gone.

  71. The new has come.

  72. You've been justified.

  73. You've been adopted.

  74. You've been redeemed.

  75. You've been set apart as holy.

  76. And that's something that only the gospel can do.

  77. Only the gospel can change your heart like that.

  78. That's why it's called God's power unto salvation.

  79. So this morning, I want to be clear with everybody of just what a disciple of Jesus Christ is.

  80. And so we use the acrostic tomb.

  81. T-O-M-B.

  82. And so if you're taking notes, you can write on the left side of your bulletin or whatever you're taking notes on.

  83. T-O-M-B.

  84. Jesus went into the tomb dead.

  85. and he came out of the tomb alive

  86. so that we would treasure him above all else.

  87. T, O, obey him in all that he commands.

  88. M, magnify him among all people.

  89. B, belong to him with all of his blood bought.

  90. So I'm gonna walk you through each of these letters.

  91. Many of you have heard it before.

  92. Many of you haven't,

  93. but it's always good to be reminded of it.

  94. And so Jesus died and was raised.

  95. So that we could treasure, obey, magnify,

  96. and belong to him together.

  97. So let's talk about this idea of

  98. treasuring Jesus above all else.

  99. What is a disciple?

  100. A disciple is someone who treasures Jesus above all else.

  101. When we talk about together following Jesus,

  102. we could say together treasuring Jesus.

  103. So when we were dead to God in our sin

  104. prior to our conversions,

  105. we were living for ourselves.

  106. That's what sin does.

  107. It's me first living.

  108. That's what our culture teaches.

  109. Live for yourself.

  110. But the thing is that God has created every human being in his image.

  111. So there's over 8 billion people on the planet right now.

  112. They all bear his image,

  113. and they're all worshipers.

  114. Because they're image bearers,

  115. they are worshipers.

  116. They're hardwired to worship God.

  117. But if you're born into sin,

  118. you're going to worship something other than God.

  119. But you're going to worship something nonetheless.

  120. Well, that all changed when he became a Christian.

  121. God radically,

  122. powerfully,

  123. graciously,

  124. dramatically changed you.

  125. He gave you a new heart.

  126. One of my favorite verses of the Bible

  127. is in 2 Corinthians 5,

  128. 515.

  129. And it gets at this idea of conversion.

  130. It says this,

  131. And he, Christ,

  132. died for all,

  133. that those who live,

  134. those who believe in him,

  135. might no longer live for themselves,

  136. but for him

  137. who for their sake

  138. died and was raised.

  139. And so what conversion is,

  140. is this radical shift

  141. from living for yourself

  142. to living for Christ.

  143. The one who died for you,

  144. you now live for him.

  145. It's a radical,

  146. radical shift.

  147. And it will result in you worshiping him.

  148. Because you're going to start seeing him

  149. for who he really is.

  150. I find it helpful in my own thinking

  151. just to help me to remember

  152. how wonderful Jesus is

  153. to do a little side-by-side comparison.

  154. Do you remember

  155. greater than,

  156. less than,

  157. or equal to?

  158. Okay, you tell me.

  159. Jesus,

  160. the second person of the Trinity,

  161. according to Hebrews 1,

  162. according to John 1,

  163. Colossians 1,

  164. he's the creator of all.

  165. So he's the creator.

  166. I'm created.

  167. You're created.

  168. Greater than,

  169. less than,

  170. or equal to.

  171. Is Jesus greater than,

  172. lesser than,

  173. or equal to you?

  174. Greater than,

  175. because he's the creator

  176. and you're the created.

  177. We also learn from Hebrews 1

  178. that Jesus is the sustainer

  179. of all things,

  180. but we need sustaining.

  181. Our next breath comes from him.

  182. He set our days.

  183. So you tell me,

  184. greater than,

  185. less than,

  186. or equal to.

  187. Jesus is the sustainer.

  188. Is he greater than,

  189. less than,

  190. or equal to us

  191. who need to be sustained?

  192. He's greater.

  193. We can go all the way down.

  194. He's the savior.

  195. We need saving.

  196. He's the Lord.

  197. We need to serve him.

  198. He's the king.

  199. We need to obey him.

  200. He's the judge.

  201. We will be judged by him.

  202. Every time you go down,

  203. every time you recognize

  204. that he's greater,

  205. it has an effect.

  206. He's the giver of our salvation.

  207. And we could only receive this

  208. as a gift.

  209. There's this,

  210. there are these beautiful passages

  211. in the New Testament.

  212. I'm going to show you one right now.

  213. It's Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  214. And why I love it,

  215. it's because

  216. it's a one verse parable.

  217. In Matthew 13, 44,

  218. Jesus starts using

  219. treasure language.

  220. Listen to this.

  221. The kingdom of heaven

  222. is like treasure

  223. hidden in a field,

  224. which man found

  225. and covered up.

  226. Then in his joy,

  227. he goes and sells

  228. all that he has

  229. and buys the field.

  230. So he's comparing

  231. his kingdom

  232. to treasure,

  233. hidden treasure.

  234. And someone who discovers it,

  235. he covers it up

  236. to sell all that he has

  237. in joy.

  238. It's a picture of repentance.

  239. I'm turning away

  240. from my old way of things.

  241. I'm cashing out

  242. so that I can obtain

  243. this treasure beyond treasures.

  244. And what Jesus is describing

  245. in that is his kingdom,

  246. his saving reign,

  247. the saving reign of God.

  248. He talks about it

  249. as treasure

  250. and in joy,

  251. giving up everything to have.

  252. If you flip in your Bibles

  253. to Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3:8

  254. verse 8,

  255. this is the Apostle Paul speaking.

  256. It's page 1166

  257. of your pew Bible.

  258. He says,

  259. Paul says,

  260. indeed I count everything

  261. as loss

  262. because of the surpassing worth

  263. of knowing

  264. Christ Jesus,

  265. my Lord.

  266. It's treasure language.

  267. It's value language.

  268. Paul valued

  269. Jesus so much,

  270. he would then say things like,

  271. for me to live

  272. is Christ

  273. and to die is gain.

  274. He treasured Jesus

  275. more than his own life.

  276. in Mark 8,

  277. Peter has just confessed

  278. that Jesus

  279. is the Christ

  280. and Jesus

  281. corrects that

  282. to make sure

  283. that they understand

  284. that the Christ

  285. will suffer,

  286. die,

  287. and be raised

  288. on the third day.

  289. And then Jesus

  290. says this.

  291. He says this

  292. in verse 34,

  293. if anyone would

  294. come after me,

  295. let him deny himself

  296. and take up his cross

  297. and follow me.

  298. For whoever

  299. would save his life

  300. will lose it,

  301. but whoever

  302. loses his life

  303. for my sake

  304. in the gospels

  305. will save it.

  306. For what does it

  307. profit

  308. a man

  309. to gain the whole world

  310. and forfeit his soul?

  311. For what can a man

  312. give in return

  313. for his soul?

  314. He's doing a

  315. cost-benefit analysis.

  316. And here's what it is.

  317. Jesus is saying,

  318. I'm worth it.

  319. Deny yourself,

  320. to gain me,

  321. you save your soul.

  322. But if you deny me

  323. to gain the world,

  324. you lose your soul.

  325. What Jesus is doing here

  326. is saying,

  327. I am the treasure.

  328. I am your salvation.

  329. At the core of being

  330. a disciple of Jesus

  331. is a changed heart

  332. that is treasuring

  333. Jesus

  334. more and more

  335. and more

  336. above all else,

  337. including

  338. yourself.

  339. The reason why

  340. we

  341. start by talking

  342. about Jesus

  343. as the treasure

  344. when it comes to

  345. talking about a disciple

  346. is that

  347. this is the great

  348. headwaters

  349. of discipleship.

  350. becoming a follower

  351. of Jesus

  352. starts and continues

  353. by treasuring Jesus.

  354. It's where it all starts.

  355. It's where it all

  356. happens every day.

  357. It's that initial

  358. step of conversion

  359. and then every day

  360. after that,

  361. you deny yourself,

  362. take up your cross

  363. and follow him

  364. because he is worth it.

  365. He's the treasure.

  366. what we're talking

  367. about here

  368. is worship.

  369. Worship-driven

  370. discipleship.

  371. It's seeing

  372. and savoring

  373. the glory

  374. of Jesus

  375. and following

  376. him

  377. in light of it.

  378. He is

  379. so worth it.

  380. So we can say

  381. things like this.

  382. We don't follow

  383. Jesus because

  384. we have to.

  385. We follow Jesus

  386. because we want to.

  387. He's changed

  388. our hearts.

  389. We value him now.

  390. We love him.

  391. So let me ask you

  392. a question.

  393. When was the last

  394. time

  395. you

  396. privately

  397. adored

  398. Jesus?

  399. Worshipped him?

  400. You

  401. spoke

  402. his worth

  403. to him?

  404. You told him

  405. how wonderful

  406. he is?

  407. When was the

  408. last time

  409. you did that?

  410. A disciple

  411. is someone

  412. who has been

  413. radically changed

  414. by the gospel

  415. and treasures

  416. Jesus

  417. above all

  418. else.

  419. So let me

  420. issue a challenge

  421. this week.

  422. There is a way

  423. to treasure

  424. Jesus

  425. daily.

  426. You take

  427. things from

  428. what the Bible

  429. says about Jesus,

  430. you read it,

  431. you take it to heart,

  432. and then you speak

  433. it back to him.

  434. Let me give you

  435. an example.

  436. Last week I made

  437. reference to Isaiah

  438. 9-6,

  439. which is that

  440. great Christmas

  441. prophecy.

  442. You know,

  443. this son is going

  444. to be given,

  445. a child given

  446. to us.

  447. His name

  448. shall be called

  449. Wonderful Counselor,

  450. Mighty God,

  451. Everlasting Father,

  452. Prince of Peace.

  453. These are four titles

  454. of the Christ,

  455. and here's what you

  456. can do.

  457. You can say,

  458. oh Lord Jesus,

  459. you are my

  460. Wonderful Counselor,

  461. and today I'm

  462. going to need

  463. your wisdom.

  464. Would you help

  465. me?

  466. Lord Jesus,

  467. you are my

  468. mighty God.

  469. You are totally

  470. God, totally

  471. man.

  472. You are risen

  473. and reigning.

  474. All things are

  475. in your hands.

  476. You are

  477. Everlasting Father,

  478. which is a way

  479. of talking about

  480. kingship.

  481. You're my king.

  482. I will obey you.

  483. You're the Prince

  484. of Peace.

  485. Oh Lord Jesus,

  486. will you bring

  487. shalom to my life

  488. today?

  489. Would you help

  490. me to walk in

  491. peace and be a

  492. peacemaker?

  493. Do you see how

  494. that works?

  495. And so you take

  496. these truths about

  497. Jesus, you digest

  498. them, and you speak

  499. them back to him.

  500. Nobody drifts

  501. into treasuring

  502. Jesus.

  503. You cultivate it.

  504. It's like opening

  505. up a treasure chest

  506. and letting your

  507. fingers work

  508. through the gold

  509. coins and lift

  510. up rubies and

  511. look at them in

  512. the light.

  513. That's what we're

  514. doing with

  515. different aspects

  516. of who Jesus

  517. is.

  518. And it affects

  519. our souls.

  520. What is a

  521. disciple?

  522. Someone who's

  523. been radically

  524. changed by the

  525. gospel, and now

  526. they treasure Jesus

  527. above all else,

  528. even more than

  529. themselves.

  530. Jesus went into

  531. the tomb, dead,

  532. came out alive,

  533. so that you would

  534. treasure him as

  535. well as obey him

  536. in all that he

  537. commands.

  538. At the end of

  539. Matthew 28, Jesus

  540. has been raised

  541. from the dead, he

  542. appears to his

  543. disciples, and he

  544. speaks to them what's

  545. called the Great

  546. Commission.

  547. And this is what he

  548. says.

  549. He says, all

  550. authority in heaven

  551. and on earth has

  552. been given to me.

  553. It is a massive

  554. statement.

  555. What Jesus is

  556. saying here is

  557. that I have the

  558. right to require

  559. obedience of all

  560. people because I'm

  561. the king of kings

  562. and lord of lords.

  563. He's been risen

  564. from the dead.

  565. And he's just not

  566. an all-authoritative

  567. king.

  568. He is our all-authoritative

  569. treasured king.

  570. He's got all this

  571. authority and he's

  572. got all this worth

  573. and it is our joy

  574. to obey him in all

  575. that he commands.

  576. As you read through

  577. the Great

  578. Commission, you read

  579. this.

  580. Go, therefore, make

  581. disciples of all

  582. nations, baptizing

  583. them in the name of

  584. the Father and the

  585. Son and the Holy

  586. Spirit.

  587. In other words, as

  588. people are converted,

  589. they are to publicly

  590. identify with me.

  591. And then he says,

  592. verse 20,

  593. teaching them to

  594. observe all that I

  595. have commanded you.

  596. Teaching them to

  597. observe all that I

  598. have commanded you.

  599. Now, the observation

  600. that Jesus is

  601. requiring right here

  602. is not just

  603. looking.

  604. He's talking about

  605. obeying.

  606. He's requiring

  607. obedience of us

  608. who are present

  609. followers of Jesus

  610. and then anyone

  611. who becomes a

  612. follower of Jesus,

  613. we teach them to

  614. obey all that Jesus

  615. has commanded.

  616. Disciples are

  617. those who have

  618. been radically

  619. changed by the

  620. grace of God and

  621. now they treasure

  622. Jesus and obey

  623. him in all that he

  624. has commanded.

  625. He went into the

  626. tomb dead and he

  627. came out of the

  628. tomb alive so that

  629. we would so that

  630. we could obey

  631. him even with

  632. joy.

  633. Because we know

  634. his commandments

  635. are not burdensome.

  636. Therefore,

  637. are good.

  638. So,

  639. what commands are

  640. we talking about?

  641. One could say,

  642. well, all of the

  643. commands of the

  644. Bible we are to

  645. obey.

  646. It's as if the

  647. triune God is

  648. calling us to

  649. obey from all of

  650. the scriptures,

  651. right?

  652. But more

  653. specifically, we

  654. can point to a

  655. specific place in

  656. the Gospels where

  657. Jesus lays out a

  658. series of his

  659. commands.

  660. And that is in

  661. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  662. 6, and 7.

  663. Would you turn with

  664. me there?

  665. Matthew 5, 6, and

  666. 7.

  667. This is the

  668. Sermon on the

  669. Mount.

  670. This is Jesus, his

  671. kingdom manifesto.

  672. This is him

  673. declaring in the

  674. Beatitudes, this is

  675. what my followers, my

  676. citizens are like, and

  677. then he goes on to

  678. say, this is how

  679. they live.

  680. And he unpacks a

  681. series of commands.

  682. What I want to do

  683. right now is I want

  684. to help you to see

  685. the commands.

  686. I want you to see

  687. what Jesus is calling

  688. you to.

  689. So that's not just

  690. vague, but specific.

  691. So in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  692. chapter 5, if you

  693. look at verse 21,

  694. there's a heading.

  695. It says, anger.

  696. Anger.

  697. Jesus calls his

  698. citizens, his

  699. followers, to live a

  700. certain way when it

  701. comes to our anger.

  702. He requires something

  703. of us.

  704. Not to be ruled by

  705. anger.

  706. Not to sin in our

  707. anger.

  708. And then in verse 27,

  709. he talks about lust.

  710. He requires something

  711. of us when it comes to

  712. the stewardship of our

  713. bodies sexually.

  714. Both physically and

  715. mentally.

  716. He says things about

  717. divorce.

  718. He requires things of

  719. us in verse 31 and

  720. 32.

  721. He talks about oaths.

  722. What he's getting at

  723. there is being a man

  724. and woman of your

  725. word.

  726. He requires something.

  727. Retaliation.

  728. When you get slapped,

  729. he wants us, requires

  730. us to respond a certain

  731. way because we're his

  732. disciples.

  733. love your enemies.

  734. This is a requirement, a

  735. calling of us.

  736. It's not optional.

  737. We are to love our

  738. enemies.

  739. So what I'm helping you

  740. to see here is there is

  741. commands that Jesus has

  742. made known clearly for us

  743. to trust him and obey him

  744. in.

  745. Chapter 6, verse 19,

  746. addressing materialism.

  747. Chapter 6, verse 25,

  748. being anxious over what

  749. you have or don't have.

  750. Chapter 7, verse 1 through

  751. 5, talking about judging

  752. other people.

  753. Not to be hypocritical in

  754. that.

  755. But I wanted to point you

  756. to something at the end

  757. of chapter 7.

  758. People don't realize that

  759. this parable of building

  760. your house on the rock,

  761. they don't realize this is

  762. the conclusion to the

  763. Sermon on the Mount.

  764. This is Jesus kind of

  765. summing up the sermon.

  766. Look what he says.

  767. Everyone then who hears

  768. these words of mine and

  769. does them.

  770. will be like a wise man

  771. who built his house on

  772. the rock and the rain

  773. fell and the floods

  774. came and the winds

  775. blew and beat on the

  776. house but it did not

  777. fall because it had been

  778. founded on the rock.

  779. It perseveres all the way

  780. to the end.

  781. Remains faithful.

  782. But then, verse 26,

  783. everyone who hears the

  784. words of mine and does

  785. not do them will be like

  786. a foolish man who built

  787. his house on the sand

  788. and the rain fell and the

  789. floods came and the winds

  790. blew and beat against the

  791. house and it fell and

  792. great was the fall of it.

  793. And so we have two sets of

  794. builders.

  795. Both hear what Jesus says

  796. but only one of those

  797. groups does it.

  798. Be a hearer of the word

  799. and a doer of the word.

  800. James 1.22.

  801. What Jesus is calling us to

  802. is obedience.

  803. Now I know that it's not

  804. popular to talk about

  805. obedience in our culture.

  806. But this is exactly what

  807. Jesus is calling us to.

  808. It's normal for Christians

  809. to obey our king because

  810. he's our treasure.

  811. He's got all authority and

  812. his commandments are not

  813. burdensome.

  814. They're always meant for our

  815. good.

  816. I think it was Gary Smalley

  817. that wrote a book years ago

  818. The Five Love Languages.

  819. Anybody hear that book?

  820. Do you know what Jesus'

  821. love language is?

  822. Turn with me to John

    John 14 chapter mention

  823. chapter 14.

  824. What communicates love to

  825. Jesus?

  826. John chapter 14 verse 15.

    John 14:15

  827. Jesus says,

  828. If you love me,

  829. you will keep my commandments.

  830. Verse 21.

  831. Whoever has my commandments

  832. and keeps them,

  833. he it is who loves me.

  834. Verse 23.

  835. If anyone loves me,

  836. he will keep my word

  837. and my father will love him

  838. and we will come to him

  839. and make our home with him.

  840. What communicates

  841. devotion

  842. and love to Jesus?

  843. It's not

  844. ecstatic experience.

  845. It's obedience.

  846. Obeying him.

  847. Trusting him.

  848. Obeying him.

  849. So here's a question for you.

  850. When was the last time

  851. you consciously

  852. obeyed

  853. a command

  854. of Jesus?

  855. You came across

  856. a command of his

  857. in the word

  858. and you're like,

  859. I've got to obey him

  860. here.

  861. I've got to change

  862. the way I'm living

  863. and I'm going to

  864. obey him here

  865. out of

  866. trust

  867. and love

  868. for him.

  869. When was the last time?

  870. So here's the challenge.

  871. This week,

  872. make your way

  873. through the Sermon on the Mount.

  874. Walk your way

  875. through

  876. all of this

  877. glorious sermon

  878. in which

  879. Jesus is laying

  880. out his kingdom manifesto.

  881. This is what is to be true

  882. of my citizens.

  883. And as you're reading

  884. through it,

  885. ask the Lord Jesus

  886. to

  887. pierce your heart

  888. with his word.

  889. Show me areas,

  890. Lord,

  891. where I am disobeying you

  892. and show me

  893. where you want me

  894. to obey you.

  895. And because

  896. you are my treasure

  897. and I love you,

  898. I will obey you.

  899. Could you imagine

  900. a church

  901. postured

  902. towards the Lord Jesus

  903. and his word

  904. like that?

  905. What is a disciple?

  906. A disciple

  907. is someone

  908. who's been radically

  909. changed by God's grace,

  910. the gospel.

  911. And now they treasure

  912. Jesus above all else

  913. and they are seeking

  914. to obey Jesus

  915. in all that he commands.

  916. Not perfectly,

  917. but they're seeking

  918. to obey him.

  919. Which brings me

  920. to the M

  921. of tomb.

  922. Treasure,

  923. obey,

  924. magnify.

  925. Magnify Jesus

  926. among all people.

  927. When you treasure

  928. Jesus above all else

  929. and you're seeking

  930. to obey him

  931. in all that he commands,

  932. do you know

  933. what happens?

  934. you shine.

  935. You stand out

  936. from the rest.

  937. It's what Jesus

  938. talks about

  939. in Matthew 5, 16.

  940. He uses

  941. light language.

  942. You're the light

  943. of the world.

  944. In verse 16,

  945. let your light

  946. shine before others

  947. so that they may

  948. see your good works

  949. and give glory

  950. to your Father

  951. who is in heaven.

  952. Do you know

  953. what a marquee is?

  954. A marquee

  955. is this lit up sign

  956. on the side

  957. of a theater

  958. and it's like

  959. an arrow

  960. pointing to

  961. what's inside.

  962. And so when a Christian

  963. is treasuring Jesus

  964. above all else

  965. and seeking to obey him

  966. in all that he commands,

  967. he gets lit up

  968. like a marquee

  969. but he's not drawing

  970. attention to himself

  971. or herself.

  972. He's drawing attention

  973. to Christ.

  974. You see,

  975. what happens

  976. is that when we

  977. are seeking to treasure

  978. and obey Jesus

  979. is that God

  980. brings our

  981. changed life.

  982. What he does

  983. is he brings

  984. the kingdom,

  985. his kingdom

  986. into the public eye.

  987. That word magnify,

  988. there's two ways

  989. to think about it.

  990. Either microscopic

  991. magnification,

  992. it's when you're

  993. looking through

  994. a microscope

  995. at a mitochondria

  996. and you're looking

  997. to kind of bring it up

  998. so you can see

  999. it's a small thing

  1000. made big.

  1001. That's not the kind

  1002. of magnifying

  1003. we're talking about.

  1004. We're talking about,

  1005. as John Piper says,

  1006. telescopic magnification

  1007. and that is where

  1008. you are kind of

  1009. being used by God

  1010. to show other people

  1011. this heavenly glory

  1012. brought near.

  1013. The kingdom

  1014. is brought near

  1015. through your changed life.

  1016. by obeying him

  1017. because you treasure him.

  1018. When you're seeking

  1019. to build your house

  1020. upon the rock

  1021. of Jesus' commands,

  1022. it brings something

  1023. of Christ's kingdom

  1024. into the public eye.

1025. You start to stand out.

  1026. People will experience

  1027. the difference Christ

  1028. makes in your life

  1029. and some people

1030. will mock you for that.

  1031. Other people

  1032. will be curious

  1033. about that.

  1034. I believe

  1035. one of the most

  1036. compelling

  1037. witnesses to Christ

  1038. is a changed life.

  1039. It's a life

  1040. that contrasts

  1041. from everyone else

  1042. around you.

  1043. People see something

  1044. that has changed

  1045. in you.

  1046. You're starting

  1047. to go to church

  1048. on a Sunday morning,

  1049. Sunday after Sunday.

  1050. It wasn't that way

1051. and now people are like,

  1052. why are you going

1053. to church on Sunday morning?

  1054. And you're like,

  1055. I can't get enough

  1056. of Jesus.

  1057. There's been a change.

  1058. People start seeing

  1059. that you are living

  1060. by the words

  1061. of Jesus

  1062. and they take notice.

1063. It could look like this.

1064. A friend comes up to you.

  1065. I notice you don't sleep around

  1066. like you used to.

1067. And you get to say,

  1068. well, I don't sleep around anymore

1069. because I follow Jesus now.

  1070. And I'm just obeying

  1071. what he's commanded.

  1072. I'm trusting that

1073. his good and right ways

  1074. are one man,

  1075. one woman,

  1076. for life,

  1077. in marriage,

1078. and that this good gift

  1079. of sex,

1080. it is to be enjoyed

1081. in the context of marriage

  1082. between one man

  1083. and one woman.

1084. That's how you answer it.

  1085. I'm just following Jesus.

1086. I'm just building my house

  1087. on that rock.

  1088. You have co-workers

1089. come up to you at work

  1090. and they're like,

  1091. hey, why don't you

  1092. trash talk everybody else

  1093. like we do?

  1094. What are you,

  1095. better than us?

1096. And you get to say something

  1097. like,

  1098. I actually used to

  1099. trash talk you, buddy.

  1100. Just kidding.

1101. I used to trash talk,

  1102. but as a follower

  1103. of Jesus now,

  1104. I'm just taking

  1105. what he said seriously.

1106. He says in the sermon,

  1107. he said,

  1108. hey,

  1109. treat other people

1110. like you would be treated.

  1111. It's the golden rule.

  1112. And so,

  1113. I realized,

  1114. man,

  1115. I don't want people

  1116. trash talking me,

1117. so I'm not going to

  1118. trash talk other people.

  1119. That's it.

  1120. You want to know

  1121. why I don't do it?

  1122. It's because of Jesus.

1123. This is how we magnify Jesus.

  1124. Jesus.

  1125. We name drop him.

1126. We give him the reason

1127. for the change in us.

  1128. We're just given credit

  1129. to where credit's due.

1130. The way to magnify Jesus

  1131. among all people

  1132. is by treasuring him

  1133. above all else

  1134. and obeying him

1135. in all that he commands.

  1136. Now, you may be

1137. asking a question like this.

  1138. Hey,

  1139. I'm not magnifying Jesus.

  1140. Well,

  1141. then the question becomes,

  1142. well,

  1143. are you obeying Jesus?

  1144. No,

  1145. I'm not obeying Jesus.

1146. Why aren't you obeying Jesus?

  1147. Well,

  1148. I'm not treasuring Jesus.

  1149. Well,

  1150. that's where we go.

1151. That's where the heart change starts.

  1152. Treasure Jesus.

  1153. And then will come

  1154. the obedience.

  1155. And then will come

  1156. the magnifying.

  1157. And when people come

  1158. into contact

  1159. with a genuine Christian

  1160. whose life is actually

  1161. being changed

  1162. by God's grace,

  1163. it's a game changer.

  1164. On Christmas Eve,

1165. we do this thing here

1166. where we darken the sanctuary.

  1167. It's the last move

  1168. of the service

  1169. and we light candles

  1170. at the front

  1171. and those candles

1172. get lit all the way

  1173. to the back

1174. and then all of a sudden

  1175. this dark room

  1176. is lit up

  1177. with light shining.

  1178. That's who we are,

  1179. church.

  1180. We're God's light

1181. shining in a dark place.

  1182. This dark city.

  1183. Your neighborhood,

  1184. your family,

  1185. your workplace.

  1186. So here's the question.

1187. When was the last time

  1188. you actually

  1189. named dropped Jesus

  1190. with a non-Christian?

  1191. That you gave him

  1192. the credit

  1193. for the change

  1194. that was being seen

  1195. in you?

  1196. The contrast.

1197. When was the last time

  1198. you did that?

  1199. So here's the challenge.

  1200. Would you pray?

  1201. Lord Jesus,

  1202. this week,

  1203. would you give me

  1204. an opportunity

  1205. to witness to you

  1206. and the change

  1207. you've wrought

  1208. in my life?

  1209. Would you help me

1210. to see it when it comes

1211. and would you make me brave,

  1212. unashamed of you?

  1213. I love talking

  1214. about my wife.

  1215. Do you know why?

  1216. Because I treasure her.

  1217. Out of the overflow

  1218. of your treasuring,

  1219. the mouth speaks.

  1220. So if you're having

  1221. a hard time

  1222. talking about Jesus,

  1223. maybe you need

  1224. to treasure him more.

  1225. This brings us

  1226. to the belonging.

  1227. Jesus went into

  1228. this tomb dead

  1229. and came out

  1230. of the tomb alive

  1231. so that we would

  1232. treasure him

  1233. and obey him

  1234. and magnify him

  1235. among all people.

  1236. And the B

  1237. is the B

  1238. of belonging.

  1239. Belonging to Jesus

  1240. with all of his

  1241. blood bought.

  1242. What we're talking

  1243. about here

  1244. in this belonging

  1245. piece

  1246. is being a meaningful

  1247. relationship

  1248. with one another

  1249. because of Christ.

  1250. Here's the reality.

  1251. If it weren't

  1252. for Christ,

  1253. we wouldn't

  1254. know each other.

  1255. We wouldn't.

  1256. Christ has brought

  1257. us together.

  1258. He is

  1259. the unifying

  1260. agent

  1261. of our relationships.

  1262. He's the hub

  1263. of our fellowship.

  1264. We are in relationship

  1265. with one another

  1266. because he

  1267. died

  1268. and was raised

  1269. for us.

  1270. And Jesus

  1271. calls us

  1272. to live out

  1273. our relationships

  1274. with one another

  1275. in a particular

  1276. way.

  1277. In John

  1278. 13,

  1279. 34 and 35,

  1280. he says,

  1281. A new commandment

  1282. I give to you

  1283. that you love

  1284. one another.

  1285. Just as I have

  1286. loved you,

  1287. you also are

  1288. to love one another.

  1289. By this,

  1290. all people will

  1291. know that you

  1292. are my disciples

  1293. if you have

  1294. love for one

  1295. another.

  1296. And so,

  1297. this love

  1298. ethic is to

  1299. be the thing

  1300. governing our

  1301. relationships

  1302. with one another.

  1303. But let me

  1304. just be clear

  1305. on that.

  1306. It's just not

  1307. like rubbing

  1308. our backs.

  1309. How did Jesus

  1310. love us?

  1311. He laid down

  1312. his life

  1313. for us

  1314. so that we

  1315. would live

  1316. for him.

  1317. And so,

  1318. the best way

  1319. that I can

  1320. love you

  1321. is by giving

  1322. myself so

  1323. that you

  1324. would treasure

  1325. Jesus above

  1326. all else.

  1327. How about

  1328. that?

  1329. How about

  1330. we give

  1331. each other

  1332. ourselves to

  1333. one another

  1334. to that end

  1335. that we

  1336. would love

  1337. Jesus more,

  1338. treasure him

  1339. and obey

  1340. him and

  1341. magnify him

  1342. together.

  1343. This kind

  1344. of loving

  1345. one another

  1346. is not

  1347. conditioned

  1348. on someone

  1349. else's

  1350. ethnicity

  1351. or someone

  1352. else's

  1353. biological

  1354. sex

  1355. or someone

  1356. else's

  1357. neighborhood

  1358. that they

  1359. live in

  1360. or someone

  1361. else's

  1362. experience,

  1363. time in

  1364. jail,

  1365. success in

  1366. life.

  1367. We are to

  1368. love one

  1369. another as

  1370. Christ has

  1371. loved us

  1372. sacrificially

  1373. and unto

  1374. Jesus.

  1375. This

  1376. is,

  1377. I wanted to

  1378. quote a

  1379. Boston song,

  1380. more than a

  1381. feeling.

  1382. this is a

  1383. commitment

  1384. that we

  1385. make to

  1386. one another.

  1387. Our

  1388. salvation

  1389. is bound

  1390. up together,

  1391. our salvation

  1392. in Christ.

  1393. So here's a

  1394. specific way I

  1395. want to apply

  1396. that this

  1397. morning, on

  1398. this membership

  1399. Sunday.

  1400. Sunday.

  1401. I'm not sure

  1402. if you have

  1403. thought about

  1404. why you come

  1405. to church on

  1406. a Sunday.

  1407. Maybe you come

  1408. to church on a

  1409. Sunday because,

  1410. hey, I just

  1411. want to get

  1412. built up, I

  1413. love to sing, I

  1414. want to hear

  1415. God's word, it's

  1416. good, I want to

  1417. pray, that's good,

  1418. or I come on

  1419. Sunday because I

  1420. need to serve and

  1421. that's good, but

  1422. have you ever

  1423. thought that you

  1424. come and gather

  1425. on a Sunday

  1426. morning out of

  1427. love for other

  1428. Christians?

  1429. I am showing

  1430. up to build

  1431. up.

  1432. I am showing

  1433. up, not so much

  1434. for myself, but

  1435. for others.

  1436. I am gathering

  1437. in order to

  1438. experience this

  1439. belonging because

  1440. I love these

  1441. people, I'm

  1442. committed to

  1443. them.

  1444. Think about

  1445. belonging as

  1446. uniquely taking

  1447. place when we

  1448. gather on a

  1449. Sunday morning.

  1450. This 75

  1451. minutes on a

  1452. Sunday morning

  1453. is the most

  1454. important 75

  1455. minutes in our

  1456. life as a

  1457. church week by

  1458. week, bar none.

  1459. This is the most

  1460. important time we

  1461. have together, and

  1462. here's why.

  1463. It's the only

  1464. time during the

  1465. week when the

  1466. whole church

  1467. gathers in

  1468. person.

  1469. The only time.

  1470. When we gather

  1471. together, we see

  1472. each other, we're

  1473. in each other's

  1474. presence, one

  1475. place, one

  1476. time, and

  1477. one focus, one

  1478. people.

  1479. We're the

  1480. church.

  1481. Did you know

  1482. that the word for

  1483. the church in

  1484. Greek is

  1485. ekklesia?

  1486. And that means,

  1487. it means called

  1488. out ones, it

  1489. means you're set

  1490. apart, but what it

  1491. also means is

  1492. simply the gathering

  1493. of God's people,

  1494. the assembly of

  1495. God's people, the

  1496. congregating of

  1497. God's people.

  1498. When the people

  1499. gather together,

  1500. that's the church,

  1501. we're the church.

  1502. the visible

  1503. representation of

  1504. the blood

  1505. blood of God.

  1506. That's what

  1507. happens when we

  1508. come together.

  1509. It's the only

  1510. time during the

  1511. week that we

  1512. sing glorious

  1513. truths about the

  1514. treasures of

  1515. Jesus.

  1516. So grateful for

  1517. Zach, for his

  1518. team who lead us.

  1519. They work hard,

  1520. they're skilled,

  1521. so that we sing

  1522. these wonderful

  1523. truths about Jesus

  1524. together.

  1525. Together!

  1526. One of my

  1527. favorite things to

  1528. do, you might do

  1529. it too from time

  1530. to time, I'll

  1531. stop singing so

  1532. that I can listen

  1533. to everybody else

  1534. sing.

  1535. And I am so

  1536. encouraged by that.

  1537. God gets

  1538. something,

  1539. Colossians 3,

  1540. done in us.

  1541. When we together

  1542. are singing to

  1543. God one time,

  1544. one place,

  1545. one focus,

  1546. one people,

  1547. it's the only

  1548. time when we

  1549. get to pray

  1550. together in

  1551. person.

  1552. One place,

  1553. one time,

  1554. one focus,

  1555. one people,

  1556. confessing our

  1557. sin together,

  1558. thanking God

  1559. for things that

  1560. he has done in

  1561. our life together,

  1562. praying for our

  1563. mission partners

  1564. together,

  1565. praying for

  1566. brothers and

  1567. sisters who are

  1568. in need together.

  1569. It is so

  1570. unique.

  1571. It happens

  1572. just once a

  1573. week, 75

  1574. minutes.

  1575. And of course

  1576. there's the

  1577. preaching of his

  1578. word.

  1579. Whoever's

  1580. preaching from

  1581. this pulpit

  1582. has put a

  1583. lot of time

  1584. in preparing

  1585. a message to

  1586. preach.

  1587. But it's

  1588. more than

  1589. that.

  1590. When God's

  1591. word is

  1592. faithfully

  1593. preached,

  1594. God himself

  1595. is forming

  1596. his people

  1597. with his

  1598. word.

  1599. One place,

  1600. one time,

  1601. one focus,

  1602. one people.

  1603. It's

  1604. unprecedented.

  1605. It's

  1606. unprecedented.

  1607. contested.

  1608. We love

  1609. one another

  1610. this way.

  1611. We love

  1612. one another

  1613. by coming

  1614. on a Sunday

  1615. morning and

  1616. gathering

  1617. together.

  1618. It's

  1619. contested.

  1620. Sometimes

  1621. you don't

  1622. want to

  1623. come.

  1624. Do I

  1625. have an

  1626. amen?

  1627. Sometimes

  1628. you don't

  1629. feel like

  1630. it.

  1631. Sometimes

  1632. you don't

  1633. want to

  1634. wrestle the

  1635. kids into

  1636. the car.

  1637. Sometimes

  1638. you'd

  1639. just rather

  1640. stay at

  1641. home.

  1642. But can

  1643. I just

  1644. ask you,

  1645. do you

  1646. think those

  1647. are love

  1648. motives?

  1649. We love

  1650. one another

  1651. by gathering

  1652. together on

  1653. a Sunday

  1654. morning.

  1655. So let me

  1656. ask you a

  1657. question.

  1658. Are you

  1659. working it

  1660. in?

  1661. Is one of

  1662. your motives

  1663. for coming

  1664. on a Sunday

  1665. morning at

  1666. 10 a.m.,

  1667. the 75

  1668. minutes of

  1669. unprecedented

  1670. time together

  1671. because you

  1672. love God's

  1673. people?

  1674. Let that

  1675. soak in.

  1676. Let that

  1677. motivate you.

  1678. you.

  1679. And the

  1680. challenge,

  1681. the challenge

  1682. would be

  1683. this.

  1684. If you

  1685. don't like

  1686. coming to

  1687. church,

  1688. if you're

  1689. not wanting

  1690. to obey

  1691. Jesus,

  1692. not wanting

  1693. to magnify

  1694. him,

  1695. could it be

  1696. a treasure

  1697. issue?

  1698. A

  1699. treasuring

  1700. Jesus

  1701. issue?

  1702. I would

  1703. challenge you

  1704. to treasure

  1705. Jesus more

  1706. and you

  1707. will find

  1708. his love

  1709. for his

  1710. people in

  1711. your

  1712. heart.

  1713. On this

  1714. membership

  1715. Sunday,

  1716. I've been

  1717. asking and

  1718. answering the

  1719. question,

  1720. what is a

  1721. disciple of

  1722. Jesus Christ

  1723. and a

  1724. disciple of

  1725. someone who's

  1726. been radically

  1727. changed by

  1728. God's grace?

  1729. So much so

  1730. that they

  1731. treasure Jesus

  1732. above all

  1733. else,

  1734. obey him in

  1735. all that he

  1736. commands,

  1737. magnifies him

  1738. among all

  1739. people,

  1740. and belongs

  1741. to Jesus

  1742. by gathering

  1743. frequently out

  1744. of love for

  1745. one another.

  1746. Jesus went

  1747. to the tomb

  1748. dead and

  1749. he came up

  1750. alive so

  1751. that we

  1752. could live

  1753. this way,

  1754. together,

  1755. following

  1756. Jesus.

  1757. Let's pray

  1758. together.

  1759. Lord God,

  1760. Lord Jesus,

  1761. there is no

  1762. one like you.

  1763. would you

  1764. stir our

  1765. hearts,

  1766. would you

  1767. call us

  1768. to treasure

  1769. you all

  1770. in new

  1771. and fresh

  1772. and profound

  1773. ways,

  1774. and that we

  1775. would treasure

  1776. you together

  1777. and obey you

  1778. together and

  1779. magnify you

  1780. together and

  1781. of course,

  1782. belong to you

  1783. together.

  1784. You are so

  1785. worthy.

  1786. God, thank you

  1787. for adding to

  1788. our numbers.

  1789. Would you add

  1790. more for the

  1791. glory of your

  1792. name?

  1793. Amen.
