  1. Hebrews chapter 8, verses 1 through 12.

    Hebrews 8:1–12

  2. Now the point in what we are saying is this.

  3. ! We have such a high priest,

  4. Thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.

  5. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all,

  6. since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law.

  7. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things.

  8. For when Moses was about to erect the tent,

  9. he was instructed by God saying,

  10. See that you make everything according to the pattern

  11. that was shown you on the mountain.

  12. Because as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry

  13. that is as much more excellent than the old,

  14. as the covenant he mediates is better,

  15. since it is enacted on better promises.

  16. For if that first covenant had been faultless,

  17. there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

  18. For he finds fault with them when he says,

  19. Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,

  20. when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel

  21. and with the house of Judah.

  22. Not like the covenant that I made with their fathers

  23. on the day when I took them by the hand

  24. to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

  25. For they did not continue in my covenant,

  26. and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

  27. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel

  28. after those days, declares the Lord.

  29. I will put my laws into their minds

  30. and write them on their hearts,

  31. and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

  32. And they shall not teach each one his neighbor

  33. and each one his brother, saying,

  34. Know the Lord, for they shall all know me,

  35. from the least of them to the greatest.

  36. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,

  37. and I will remember their sins no more.

  38. I assume you are all familiar

  39. with General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

  40. Military leader, United States President.

  41. In World War II, he achieved

  42. probably one of the coolest job titles of all time,

  43. supreme allied commander in Europe.

  44. So I want to imagine a story about Eisenhower.

  45. It's totally made up, okay?

  46. There's no historical veracity to it.

  47. Let's imagine a story about Eisenhower.

  48. During World War II, let's say he's home in the States

  49. for some reason, and he's walking along the street,

  50. and he comes along this house with the front yard,

  51. and in the front yard,

  52. there's an eight-year-old boy named Johnny

  53. and a bunch of his friends.

  54. And Johnny and his friends are playing army.

  55. They have cap guns.

  56. They have radio flyer wagons

  57. that sometimes they're pretending are tanks,

  58. and sometimes they're pretending are airplanes.

  59. Some of them are wearing pots on their heads

  60. that they stole from their mom's kitchen as helmets.

  61. And so Eisenhower walks by, and he says,

  62. what are you guys doing?

  63. And Johnny says, we're playing army.

  64. We're fighting a war, and I'm the general.

  65. And Eisenhower chuckles, and he says,

  66. I'm a general too.

  67. And Johnny says, you got any cap guns?

  68. No.

  69. You got a wagon or something to be a tank?

  70. Eisenhower says, no.

  71. Where's your helmet?

  72. I don't have it with me.

  73. Johnny says, you don't seem like a general to me.

  74. Now, if you were watching that unfold,

  75. how many of you would say,

  76. Johnny's got a point?

  77. I guess Eisenhower isn't a general at all.

  78. Of course not.

  79. Because you would know,

  80. the problem is not that Eisenhower

  81. isn't really a general.

  82. It's not that he isn't qualified,

  83. or doesn't have all the necessary rank and status.

  84. The problem, in terms of Johnny's comprehension,

  85. is that Eisenhower is so much more of a real general

  86. than Johnny even realizes

  87. about this guy who's just walked past his front yard.

  88. Eisenhower is the real thing

  89. to which Johnny and his friends

  90. and his cap guns are all pointing towards.

  91. Things that they're copies of.

  92. Let's ask this question.

  93. Let's say it's two weeks before Operation Overlord,

  94. the invasion of Normandy,

  95. two weeks before D-Day.

  96. Who do you think should be in command of that operation?

  97. General Johnny?

  98. Or Supreme Commander Eisenhower?

  99. When the stakes are high,

  100. you need the real thing.

  101. When the stakes are high,

  102. you need the real thing,

  103. not a copy.

  104. And when it comes to our sin,

  105. the stakes are high.

  106. When the problem is as serious

  107. as the evil in our own hearts and lives,

  108. we need a real answer.

  109. And so our text this morning,

  110. Hebrews chapter 8,

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  111. is going to be of little interest

  112. to people who don't feel the weight

  113. of their own sin.

  114. For those who don't understand

  115. just how messed up they are

  116. and how totally unacceptable

  117. they are before God,

  118. Hebrews 8 is going to be

  119. kind of boring and irrelevant.

  120. But,

  121. if you wince

  122. when you take an honest look at yourself,

  123. and if you have deep regret

  124. for the ways that you have hurt others

  125. and you continue to hurt others,

  126. and if you cringe at the thoughts

  127. that go through your mind every day,

  128. and if you've done things

  129. that you'd give anything

  130. if you could just undo them,

  131. and if on top of all that

  132. you've realized that

  133. all of those ugly things

  134. are not just flukes and accidents,

  135. but are expressions of something

  136. that's really wrong

  137. and bad about you,

  138. if that's you,

  139. then Hebrews 8 is for you.

  140. Because the message of Hebrews 8

  141. is take your real sin

  142. to a real high priest

  143. who gives better promises.

  144. Take your real sin

  145. to a real high priest

  146. who gives better promises.

  147. And so we're going to

  148. ask the questions,

  149. what does it mean

  150. that Jesus is a real high priest?

  151. And we're going to ask the question,

  152. what are those better promises?

  153. But before we do,

  154. let's review what we've already learned

  155. about Jesus as a high priest

  156. in Hebrews.

  157. Remember that a priest

  158. is someone who goes

  159. between us and God,

  160. who represents us before God,

  161. who mediates between us and God.

  162. And as we see someone

  163. who offers a sacrifice

  164. for us to God.

  165. So as we think about priests

  166. going between us and God,

  167. we've seen that Jesus

  168. in chapter 4

  169. is a sympathetic high priest.

  170. He understands our weakness

  171. because he's experienced it,

  172. but without sin.

  173. In chapters 5 through 7,

  174. we've seen a variety of things

  175. about Jesus as our high priest.

  176. We saw that he's

  177. a legitimate high priest.

  178. He's not a priest

  179. in the line of Levi,

  180. but he is a legitimate high priest

  181. because he was a different

  182. priestly order

  183. that is also designated by God,

  184. the order of Melchizedek.

  185. And the author of Hebrews

  186. showed us this was part

  187. of God's plan

  188. based on the Old Testament Scriptures.

  189. We've seen that Jesus

  190. is a perfect

  191. and a sinless high priest.

  192. He doesn't need to offer

  193. a sacrifice for his own sins,

  194. but instead he can offer himself

  195. as a perfect sacrifice

  196. for ours.

  197. And we've seen that

  198. he's an eternal high priest.

  199. He has an indestructible life

  200. and he always lives

  201. to intercede for us.

  202. And then now,

  203. as we come to chapter 8,

  204. we see that Jesus

  205. is the real high priest.

  206. The realest,

  207. the most real,

  208. the high priest

  209. of whom every other priest

  210. who came before

  211. is just a copy and a shadow.

  212. So how is Jesus

  213. the real high priest?

  214. What's real about him?

  215. We see it in verses 1-5.

  216. Let's look at verses 1-2 first.

  217. Now the point of what

  218. we are saying is this.

  219. We have such a high priest,

  220. one who is seated

  221. at the right hand

  222. of the throne

  223. of the majesty in heaven,

  224. a minister in the holy places

  225. in the true tent

  226. that the Lord set up,

  227. not man.

  228. So Jesus is the real high priest

  229. because where he is.

  230. He's at the right hand

  231. of the throne of God,

  232. not on earth,

  233. in heaven.

  234. And there's also

  235. the contrast between

  236. the kind of

  237. tabernacle

  238. that he's in.

  239. It says that he's a minister

  240. in the holy places

  241. in the true tent.

  242. When you hear the word tent,

  243. you should think tabernacle.

  244. He's in

  245. the true tabernacle.

  246. So if that's

  247. the true tabernacle,

  248. maybe you think to yourself,

  249. what does that say

  250. about the old tabernacle?

  251. A tabernacle

  252. that the Lord

  253. set up,

  254. not man.

  255. No other priest

  256. can claim these things.

  257. If a priest's role

  258. is to represent us

  259. before God,

  260. to intercede

  261. before God

  262. on our behalf

  263. to offer sacrifices

  264. for us

  265. to God,

  266. then the location

  267. of that priest

  268. is going to make

  269. a difference.

  270. If you have one priest

  271. who is on earth

  272. in an earthly tabernacle,

  273. in an earthly tent,

  274. created by man,

  275. then you have another priest

  276. that's in heaven

  277. right next to God,

  278. speaking directly

  279. into God's ears,

  280. in God's presence,

  281. in the real

  282. holy place.

  283. Which one's going to be

  284. a better priest for you?

  285. This is a tabernacle.

  286. It says that the Lord

  287. set up not man.

  288. Remember in Exodus

  289. when they built

  290. the tabernacle,

  291. God gifted

  292. a man named Bezalel

  293. with the gifts

  294. and the abilities

  295. to help craft,

  296. along with his fellow

  297. craftsmen,

  298. all of the

  299. structures

  300. and utensils

  301. for the tabernacle.

  302. So that's a pretty

  303. nice setup.

  304. A man directly

  305. gifted by God

  306. to build

  307. these things,

  308. and he's given

  309. the plans

  310. from Moses

  311. who got them

  312. directly from God.

  313. God.

  314. And now the author

  315. of Hebrews

  316. is saying,

  317. that's not

  318. the true tabernacle.

  319. There's a different one

  320. that's better

  321. in heaven.

  322. Many of you guys

  323. have probably

  324. participated

  325. in a science fair

  326. at some point

  327. in your education.

  328. Right?

  329. A bunch of students

  330. get together,

  331. they each work

  332. on these projects

  333. for a while,

  334. they present them,

  335. maybe they win

  336. an award

  337. for the best science project.

  338. Imagine a tabernacle

  339. fair,

  340. and Bezalel

  341. shows up,

  342. he's got his tabernacle,

  343. he knows

  344. he's been gifted

  345. by God,

  346. he knows

  347. he's got the plans

  348. exactly

  349. as God gave them

  350. to Moses,

  351. and he thinks

  352. he's got

  353. this tabernacle

  354. fair locked in.

  355. He goes up

  356. to register,

  357. he says,

  358. I'm here to

  359. display my tabernacle,

  360. secretary says,

  361. okay,

  362. you're going to be

  363. at table number

  364. three,

  365. right next to

  366. table number

  367. four,

  368. where the Lord

  369. God is presenting.

  370. Bezalel says,

  371. what?

  372. He says,

  373. yeah,

  374. the Lord is

  375. presenting

  376. at the tabernacle

  377. fair,

  378. he's brought

  379. his heavenly

  380. tabernacle

  381. with a true

  382. holy place.

  383. And Bezalel

  384. says,

  385. and I have

  386. to be at the

  387. table right

  388. next to him?

  389. that's what

  390. the author

  391. of Hebrews

  392. is saying.

  393. Jesus is

  394. our high

  395. priest in

  396. a tabernacle

  397. that's in

  398. heaven,

  399. created by

  400. the Lord,

  401. not man.

  402. He's the

  403. real high

  404. priest.

  405. Now look at

  406. verses three

  407. through four.

  408. For every

  409. high priest

  410. is appointed

  411. to offer

  412. gifts and

  413. sacrifices,

  414. thus it is

  415. necessary for

  416. this priest

  417. also to have

  418. something to

  419. offer.

  420. Now if he

  421. were on

  422. earth,

  423. he would

  424. not be a

  425. priest at

  426. all since

  427. there are

  428. priests who

  429. offer gifts

  430. according to

  431. the law.

  432. Jesus did not

  433. fit into the

  434. earthly Levitical

  435. priesthood of

  436. the Old

  437. Testament.

  438. Remember what

  439. happened with

  440. Eisenhower?

  441. Now imagine

  442. Jesus walking

  443. up to the

  444. Levitical

  445. priests at

  446. their tabernacle

  447. and he says,

  448. I'm a priest.

  449. And I'd say,

  450. well, do you

  451. have our special

  452. priestly garments?

  453. Jesus says,

  454. no.

  455. Do you have

  456. a bull or

  457. a goat or

  458. a dove to

  459. offer as a

  460. priest?

  461. Jesus says,

  462. no, I don't

  463. have that.

  464. Well, are you

  465. even a priest

  466. at all?

  467. Not here on

  468. earth.

  469. Not of this

  470. kind of

  471. priesthood.

  472. Not of this

  473. tabernacle.

  474. verse 5.

  475. These priests

  476. who are on

  477. earth, they

  478. serve a copy

  479. and a shadow

  480. of the heavenly

  481. things.

  482. When Moses was

  483. about to erect

  484. the tent, he

  485. was instructed

  486. by God, see

  487. that you make

  488. everything according

  489. to the pattern

  490. that was shown

  491. you on the

  492. mountain.

  493. These earthly

  494. priests in

  495. their earthly

  496. tent carrying

  497. out their

  498. priestly duties

  499. and their

  500. sacrifices, they

  501. are copies and

  502. shadows of the

  503. ultimate realities

  504. of the heavenly

  505. things.

  506. they are

  507. shadows of

  508. the things

  509. that actually

  510. happen in the

  511. presence of

  512. God.

  513. And God

  514. showed Moses

  515. a very clear

  516. pattern of how

  517. he wanted this

  518. tabernacle and

  519. all its utensils

  520. created and it

  521. was important that

  522. Moses got them

  523. right because they

  524. point to something

  525. that's much more

  526. real and much more

  527. important than

  528. themselves.

  529. They were never

  530. meant to be

  531. ultimate.

  532. So Jesus is the

  533. real high priest.

  534. He's the realist.

  535. And when Hebrews

  536. talks about this

  537. and when I say

  538. he's the true or

  539. the real high priest

  540. it doesn't mean

  541. that everything

  542. that came before

  543. was fake.

  544. Because the

  545. comparison here is

  546. not real versus

  547. fake.

  548. God established

  549. that old

  550. priesthood.

  551. It served a

  552. purpose.

  553. The difference

  554. that the author of

  555. Hebrews is showing

  556. us here is the

  557. difference between

  558. the real thing

  559. and the

  560. representation of

  561. that thing.

  562. The difference

  563. between what is

  564. eternal and what

  565. is only ever meant

  566. to be temporary.

  567. the difference

  568. between the

  569. foreshadowing of

  570. something and

  571. its ultimate

  572. fulfillment.

  573. Of course in the

  574. simplest sense as

  575. the author of

  576. Hebrews says

  577. it's the difference

  578. between a real

  579. thing and a

  580. shadow.

  581. So is a shadow

  582. fake?

  583. No there's

  584. nothing fake

  585. or counterfeit

  586. or deceptive

  587. about a shadow.

  588. it's just not

  589. the real thing.

  590. That's all.

  591. When you see a

  592. friend after a

  593. long time apart

  594. you don't try to

  595. hug their shadow.

  596. And if you're

  597. walking along

  598. outside and you

  599. hear a plane

  600. overhead and a

  601. shadow passes

  602. over you you

  603. don't look at the

  604. ground and start

  605. running and chasing

  606. the shadow and

  607. studying the

  608. shadow.

  609. When a shadow

  610. passes overhead

  611. you look up.

  612. And that's

  613. what the purpose

  614. of all those

  615. detailed,

  616. complicated,

  617. Old Testament

  618. instructions were

  619. for the tabernacle

  620. and the sacrificial

  621. system.

  622. It was to create

  623. a shadow that

  624. would cause us

  625. to look up so

  626. that at the

  627. right time when

  628. Jesus came we

  629. would look up and

  630. we would see him

  631. and recognize him

  632. for who he is.

  633. As the real high

  634. priest in heaven

  635. sitting at the

  636. right hand of the

  637. throne of

  638. majesty.

  639. So when you have

  640. real sin that

  641. condemns you before

  642. God where do you

  643. want your high

  644. priest to be?

  645. In some tent on

  646. earth or at the

  647. right hand of God

  648. interceding for you?

  649. When you have real

  650. sin and you need a

  651. high priest to go

  652. between you and

  653. God what do you

  654. want?

  655. Do you want a

  656. shadow or do you

  657. want the real

  658. thing?

  659. Now you might be

  660. saying to yourself

  661. okay I get it

  662. Jesus is the real

  663. high priest.

  664. He's better than

  665. what came before.

  666. He's the real

  667. thing.

  668. They were copies

  669. and shadows but

  670. I have not been

  671. trying to go back

  672. to that Old

  673. Testament system.

  674. I haven't been

  675. asking some Old

  676. Testament priest to

  677. represent me or

  678. sacrifice for me.

  679. I'm good with that.

  680. Why is it important

  681. for us to see here

  682. in Hebrews that

  683. Jesus is the real

  684. high priest?

  685. Two reasons that

  686. I'll give at least.

  687. One is we need to

  688. know that Jesus as

  689. our high priest has

  690. the full approval of

  691. God the Father.

  692. We need to know that

  693. Jesus as our high

  694. priest is part of

  695. God's plan for all

  696. of time because

  697. there's only one

  698. true God, right?

  699. There's only one God

  700. who created the

  701. world.

  702. There's only one God

  703. who flooded the

  704. earth.

  705. There's only one God

  706. who made covenants

  707. with his people.

  708. There's only one God

  709. who made promises to

  710. Abraham.

  711. There's only one God

  712. who brought his

  713. people out of Egypt

  714. with great power.

  715. There's only one God

  716. who brought them

  717. through the Red Sea.

  718. There's only one God

  719. who has literally

  720. spoken and given

  721. his words in detail

  722. to his people.

  723. There's only one God

  724. who's done any of

  725. that.

  726. And so if Jesus

  727. just comes to us

  728. in a historical

  729. vacuum, totally

  730. disconnected from all

  731. that, there's no

  732. reason for us to

  733. expect that he's

  734. actually connecting

  735. us, representing us

  736. to the one true God.

  737. We need to have

  738. confidence that Jesus

  739. is part of God's

  740. plan for all of time.

  741. He's a continuation

  742. and fulfillment of

  743. what God has been

  744. doing all along.

  745. But not only is he

  746. better than the

  747. Old Testament priests,

  748. we need to know that

  749. Jesus is a better

  750. and real high priest

  751. compared to any

  752. alternatives that we

  753. may try to find for

  754. ourselves.

  755. So we may not be

  756. asking an Old

  757. Testament Levite to

  758. represent us before

  759. God, but what kind

  760. of priest do we

  761. have?

  762. What do we think

  763. will stand before

  764. God for us?

  765. Who do we hope

  766. will mediate between

  767. us and God and

  768. offer sacrifices for

  769. us so that God

  770. will forgive us and

  771. overlook our sin?

  772. Well, here's a few

  773. possibilities.

  774. We might be

  775. trusting in the high

  776. priest of our own

  777. good intentions.

  778. What's going to

  779. represent me before

  780. God?

  781. It's my own good

  782. intentions.

  783. God sees my heart.

  784. He knows it's in the

  785. right place.

  786. He knows that I try

  787. to do good as much

  788. as I can.

  789. He knows that I try

  790. not to do bad stuff

  791. as much as I can.

  792. A lot of times,

  793. even when I do do

  794. bad things, it's not

  795. because I really want

  796. to or I intend to do.

  797. It's just, you know,

  798. circumstances and all

  799. kinds of stuff kind of

  800. worked against me.

  801. And so God knows.

  802. He understands.

  803. So when I stand

  804. before God with my

  805. sin, I'm going to

  806. count on my good

  807. intentions to

  808. represent me before

  809. God so that my

  810. sins may be forgiven.

  811. That's one option.

  812. Maybe we have a high

  813. priest of cultural

  814. excuses.

  815. Well, it's just the

  816. world we live in right

  817. now.

  818. Everyone is doing it.

  819. Everyone is saying

  820. it's okay.

  821. You know, maybe there

  822. were some things that

  823. maybe were wrong or at

  824. least seemed wrong in

  825. the past, but now kind

  826. of in the situation we

  827. live in, it is what it

  828. is.

  829. And so as I stand

  830. before God with my

  831. sin, he's going to

  832. take into account the

  833. culture that I live in.

  834. God's going to see

  835. that.

  836. Or maybe the high

  837. priest of religious

  838. intensity.

  839. I'm going to go to

  840. church as much as I

  841. can.

  842. I'm going to be

  843. involved as much as I

  844. can.

  845. I'm going to serve

  846. every Sunday.

  847. I'm going to do

  848. everything midweek that

  849. I can.

  850. I'm going to read my

  851. Bible every day.

  852. I'm going to pray with

  853. great feeling and

  854. emotion.

  855. I'm going to give and

  856. serve as much as I

  857. can.

  858. And my religious

  859. intensity will

  860. represent me before

  861. God.

  862. He will see that I am

  863. sincerely,

  864. trying to honor him,

  865. that I sincerely

  866. believe in him.

  867. And that will cause

  868. him to overlook my

  869. sin.

  870. Or maybe it's the

  871. high priest of

  872. intense guilt and

  873. self-punishment.

  874. I'm going to make

  875. sure that I feel so

  876. bad about my sin.

  877. No one is going to

  878. feel worse about my

  879. sin than me.

  880. Maybe not even God.

  881. I'm just going to

  882. sit in my guilt and

  883. I'm going to punish

  884. myself.

  885. I'm going to punish

  886. myself mentally or

  887. emotionally or socially

  888. or physically.

  889. But I'm going to

  890. punish myself so that

  891. God doesn't have to.

  892. When I stand before

  893. God with my sin, he's

  894. going to see how much

  895. I've already taken it

  896. out of myself.

  897. And therefore, he will

  898. overlook my sin.

  899. That's my high priest.

  900. Or maybe you say,

  901. my high priest is just

  902. that I'm not as bad

  903. as other people.

  904. What stands between me

  905. and a holy God?

  906. It's all the other bad

  907. people who are worse

  908. than me.

  909. So when God looks at

  910. me, yes, he's going to

  911. see some sin.

  912. But he's going to see a

  913. lot more sin in other

  914. places and in other

  915. people.

  916. And so he's going to

  917. grade on a curve and

  918. I'm going to end up

  919. okay.

  920. Okay.

  921. What stands before

  922. God for you?

  923. None of these are real

  924. high priests.

  925. And in fact, they're

  926. actually worse than the

  927. Levitical high priests

  928. of the Old Testament

  929. because at least those

  930. priests were copies and

  931. shadows pointing towards

  932. something true and

  933. something better.

  934. But these high priests

  935. that we come up with

  936. are totally false.

  937. They do not minister in

  938. heavenly places.

  939. They don't sit at the

  940. right hand of the

  941. throne.

  942. They can't offer any

  943. sacrifice for you.

  944. And they leave you

  945. condemned in your sin.

  946. So the author of

  947. Hebrews is telling us

  948. verses 1 through 5,

  949. Jesus is the real

  950. high priest.

  951. So take your real sin

  952. to a real high priest.

  953. A high priest who gives

  954. better promises.

  955. What are the better

  956. promises?

  957. Verses 6 through 12.

  958. Let's start in verses

  959. 6 and 7.

  960. As it is, Christ has

  961. obtained a ministry, i.e.

  962. a priesthood, that is as

  963. much more excellent than

  964. the old as the covenant

  965. he mediates is better

  966. since it is enacted on

  967. better promises.

  968. For if that first covenant

  969. had been faultless, there

  970. would have been no

  971. occasion to look for a

  972. second.

  973. Jesus has a better

  974. priestly ministry not

  975. only because he serves

  976. true heavenly realities in

  977. the very presence of God

  978. but also because his

  979. covenant is better and

  980. his covenant is better

  981. because it's legislated,

  982. it's enacted on better

  983. promises.

  984. And Hebrews tells us there

  985. was a problem with the

  986. old covenant.

  987. It had a fault.

  988. What was wrong with the

  989. old covenant?

  990. The old covenant came

  991. from God himself.

  992. Did God give his people

  993. something faulty?

  994. Something broken?

  995. And now he's saying I

  996. gotta do a redo, try again?

  997. There's a fault in the

  998. covenant?

  999. What's up with that?

1000. Did God mess up in his

  1001. first covenant?

  1002. Let's look at verse 7

1003. again in the first part of

  1004. verse 8.

1005. For if that first covenant

  1006. had been faultless, there

  1007. would have been no

1008. occasion to look for a

  1009. second.

1010. For he finds fault with

  1011. them when he says.

1012. You would expect him to

1013. say, if the first covenant

  1014. had been faultless, there

  1015. would have been no

1016. occasion to look for a

  1017. second.

1018. For he finds fault with it,

  1019. with the covenant.

1020. But that's not exactly what

  1021. it says.

1022. It says he finds fault with

  1023. them, not it.

1024. See, the real fault in the

1025. old covenant is not the

  1026. covenant itself per se.

  1027. It's with God's covenant

  1028. people.

  1029. Look at verses 8 and 9.

1030. He finds fault with them

1031. when he says, behold, the

  1032. days are coming, declares

1033. the Lord, when I will

  1034. establish a new covenant

1035. with the house of Israel

1036. and with the house of

  1037. Judah, not like the

1038. covenant that I made with

1039. their fathers on the day

1040. when I took them by the

1041. hand to bring them out of

  1042. the land of Egypt.

1043. For they did not continue

1044. in my covenant, so I

  1045. showed no concern for

  1046. them, declares the Lord.

  1047. The people did not

  1048. continue in the covenant.

  1049. They broke the agreement.

1050. They violated it in every

  1051. way and they received

  1052. the promised judgments

  1053. of the covenant.

1054. That's some of the promises

1055. of the old covenant, by

  1056. the way.

  1057. If you do this

  1058. judgment,

1059. that's some of the promises

  1060. of the old covenant.

1061. But this new covenant, which

1062. Jesus is the high priest, has

  1063. better promises that address

  1064. this fault.

  1065. Verses 10 through 12.

1066. For this is the covenant that

1067. I will make with the house of

  1068. Israel after those days,

  1069. declares the Lord.

1070. I will put my laws into their

1071. minds and write them on their

1072. hearts and I will be their God

1073. and they shall be my people

1074. and they shall not teach each

1075. one his neighbor and each one

1076. his brother, saying, know the

1077. Lord, for they shall all know me

1078. from the least of them to the

  1079. greatest.

1080. For I will be merciful toward

1081. their iniquities and I will

1082. remember their sins no more.

1083. What are the better promises of

1084. the new covenant of which Jesus

  1085. is the high priest?

1086. There are at least three that are

  1087. listed here.

1088. God's law internalized in our

  1089. hearts, a personal relationship

1090. with God for every member of

  1091. God's people, and total

  1092. forgiveness of our sins.

1093. What was the law written on in

  1094. the old covenant?

  1095. Tablets of stone.

  1096. External.

  1097. Hearts were not changed.

1098. In the new covenant, God writes

  1099. his law on hearts.

1100. He changes something within us.

1101. Something that was hard and cold

1102. and dead previously is now

1103. changed by God and the law is

1104. not something external to us to

1105. which we constantly try to live

  1106. but it's something that's

  1107. internal, that's empowered by

  1108. God himself.

1109. And we aren't just a group of

1110. God's people where some people

  1111. kind of receive special

1112. dispensations of the Holy Spirit

1113. at special times to accomplish

1114. special tasks and some of us

1115. you know are specially chosen by

1116. God or have a special

  1117. relationship with him.

1118. All of us know God from the

  1119. least to the greatest.

  1120. Everyone has a personal

  1121. relationship with God.

  1122. They know him

  1123. personally.

1124. And of course a total

  1125. forgiveness of our sins.

1126. I'll be merciful towards their

1127. iniquities and I will remember

  1128. their sins no more.

1129. If we were the fault in the old

1130. covenant and our sin and our

  1131. violations and our covenant

1132. breaking, the new covenant has to

1133. have something to account for that.

1134. Something to account for our sin

1135. and God says I will be merciful and I

1136. will remember those sins no more.

  1137. forgiveness and total

  1138. forgetfulness.

1139. So what's new about the new

  1140. covenant?

  1141. Here it is.

1142. This is by the way the longest

1143. quotation of the Old Testament

  1144. in the New Testament.

1145. Three promises available to us

1146. because Jesus is our real high

1147. priest and because he mediates a

  1148. new covenant for us.

1149. The old covenant, the little

1150. biblical priest could not offer

1151. these promises to God's people.

1152. And neither can any of the false

1153. high priests that we may hope in

  1154. today.

1155. The high priest of our good

1156. intentions can't give us any of

  1157. these promises.

1158. The high priest of cultural excuses

1159. cannot give us any of these

  1160. promises.

1161. The high priest of our own

1162. religious intensity cannot give us

  1163. any of these promises.

1164. The high priest of intense guilt and

1165. self-punishment does not offer any

  1166. of these promises.

1167. The high priest of being a little

1168. bit better than most other people

  1169. offers no promises.

1170. So take your real sin to a real high

1171. priest who gives better promises.

1172. We have such a high priest.

1173. The main point of what we're saying

1174. is we have such a high priest.

1175. That's why the good news is called

  1176. the good news.

1177. We have such a high priest.

1178. So where are you this morning?

1179. Are you aware of your sin?

  1180. It's Mother's Day.

1181. Moms, were you a bad mom this week?

  1182. I don't just mean in a joking way.

1183. Did you let your kids down?

1184. Did you treat them in a way that you

  1185. shouldn't have?

1186. Dads, were you a lousy dad this week?

  1187. Did you choose selfishness?

  1188. Did you choose anger?

  1189. kids, were you disobedient?

1190. For all of us, did we give in to greed?

1191. Did we give in to envy?

1192. Did we hurt others with our words?

1193. Did we live in shame of our high

  1194. priest Jesus?

  1195. Take your real sin

1196. to a real high priest

  1197. who offers

  1198. better promises?

1199. Only Jesus sits at the right hand of God.

1200. Always ready to intercede for you.

1201. Only Jesus offers a sacrifice

1202. that is acceptable in heaven

1203. in the very presence of God.

  1204. Only Jesus offers hope

  1205. of real obedience

1206. in our hearts and lives.

1207. Only Jesus gives you direct access

  1208. to know God directly.

  1209. Only Jesus

1210. can take your real sin

1211. and declare it totally forgiven

  1212. and totally forgotten

1213. and show mercy to you.

  1214. We have

  1215. such a high priest.

  1216. That's good news.

1217. And we're going to learn

  1218. a lot more

  1219. about the specifics

  1220. of what this is

  1221. in the coming weeks

1222. as we look at the next few chapters.

  1223. But the main point

  1224. of what we're saying

1225. is we have such a high priest.

  1226. A real one.

1227. So let's take our sin

  1228. to Him.

  1229. Let's pray.

  1230. Father, thank you.

  1231. We are not

  1232. capable or worthy

  1233. in and of ourselves

  1234. to stand before you.

  1235. this week,

  1236. this morning,

  1237. this morning,

  1238. last night,

  1239. all of us

  1240. fell short.

  1241. All of us sinned.

  1242. And so we know

  1243. that

1244. we need a high priest.

  1245. We need Jesus.

  1246. just as much today

  1247. as any other day.

  1248. And we thank you

1249. that He is there for us.

  1250. Thank you that

1251. He always will be there for us.

1252. Help us to believe it.

  1253. Amen.

  1254. Amen.

  1255. Amen.

  1256. Thank you.
