  1. If you'd open up your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 9, I'm going to be preaching on Hebrews

Hebrews 9 chapter mention Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  2. chapter 9.

  3. A golden urn holding the manna and Aaron's staff that budded in the tablets of the covenant.

  4. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat.

  5. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

  6. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section

  7. performing their ritual duties, but into the second only the high priest goes.

  8. And he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for

  9. the unintentional sins of the people, by this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into

  10. the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing, which

  11. is symbolic for the present age.

  12. According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience

  13. of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations of the body

  14. imposed until the time of reformation.

  15. Verse 11.

  16. But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is not of this creation,

  17. he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood,

  18. thus securing an eternal redemption.

  19. For if the bloods of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of heifer sanctify for the purication of the flesh,

  20. how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself without blemish to God,

  21. purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

  22. Amen.

  23. You know, when the check engine light appears on your car's dashboard, it means you've got to do something.

  24. It usually means there's either a malfunction with your car, or you just need to get it regularly serviced.

  25. And if you're like me, the temptation is to just to flat out ignore it, and here's why.

  26. I don't want the inconvenience of having to schedule bringing the car into a mechanic,

  27. and I definitely don't want to be confronted with what I've got to pay.

  28. Maybe you can relate.

  29. Anybody in the room with a check engine light on?

  30. I see that hand.

  31. Anybody else in the room with a check engine light on?

  32. Your conscience is the check engine light of your soul.

  33. Your conscience is your moral self-awareness.

  34. When you do something wrong, your conscience lights up to tell you that your heart needs servicing.

  35. You've got to address this sin, this wrong that you've done.

  36. Guilt is knowing that you have sinned and that you're responsible for it.

  37. A guilty verdict in a court of law is a declaration that someone has committed a crime and that they are responsible for it,

  38. and there's a consequence that they must pay.

  39. Real sin results in real guilt with real consequences.

  40. Do you know what we're talking about this morning?

  41. We're talking about a guilty conscience.

  42. When the check engine light of your soul turns on after you've done something wrong.

  43. What do you do?

  44. When your conscience convicts you of real guilt for real sin.

  45. Is there any real help?

  46. Is it possible for a guilty conscience to be purified?

  47. Or in the words of the writer of Hebrews, perfected?

  48. Can a guilty conscience be made clean?

  49. Well, that's what Hebrews 9, 1 through 14 answers.

  50. Here's the answer.

  51. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse your guilty conscience.

  52. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse your guilty conscience.

  53. And so, this passage, we can divide it into two sections.

  54. What cannot clean your conscience?

  55. Verses 1 through 10.

  56. And then 11 through 14.

  57. What can clean your conscience?

  58. When the check engine light of your soul turns on, don't turn to what can't clean your conscience.

  59. Draw near to what can clean your conscience.

  60. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse your guilty conscience.

  61. So, what can't clean your conscience?

  62. Let's look at verses 1 through 10.

  63. Now, remember that the original audience of the book of Hebrews, this letter came into a church.

  64. And they were Christians with a Jewish Hebrew background.

  65. They had been suffering for Christ.

  66. We're going to see that more as we get into the latter chapters of the book of Hebrews.

  67. And they were being tempted to go back to the old covenant of Judaism.

  68. With its earthly tabernacle.

  69. And its Levitical priesthood.

  70. And its animal sacrifices.

  71. The problem was that by going back to these old covenant arrangements,

  72. they would have to forsake Christ.

  73. And the new covenant he had established in his blood.

  74. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse a guilty conscience.

  75. Not the blood of bulls and goats.

  76. So, in verses 1 through 10, the writer of Hebrews shows us how the old covenant arrangements of the earthly tabernacle

  77. and the Levitical priesthood and animal sacrifices fall short of cleansing a guilty conscience.

  78. It's shown to be faulty.

  79. Incomplete.

  80. So, in verses 1 through 5, we see a description of the earthly tabernacle.

  81. Maybe you haven't heard of the earthly tabernacle before.

  82. It was a portable tent that God had the Jewish people design.

  83. And he would come and dwell in that tent.

  84. And he would kind of like go with his people in the wilderness and into the promised land.

  85. If you want to take a deeper look at the tabernacle, look at Exodus chapter 25, verses chapter 25 through chapter 31.

    Exodus 25 chapter mention

  86. In this passage, we learn that it's an earthly place of holiness.

  87. It's a real dwelling place of God.

  88. In 2 through 5, we learn that there's two sections of this tent.

  89. The first is this outer section, the holy place with a lampstand and a table and the bread of presents.

  90. And the second section is called the holy of holies.

  91. It's the inner section.

  92. You would have to go through the holy place to get into the holy of holies.

  93. And in the holy of holies was the Ark of the Covenant.

  94. And inside the Ark of the Covenant, you had an urn holding the manna, God's provision for his people in the wilderness.

  95. You had the staff of Aaron that budded, showing that he was a priest from God.

  96. And that you had the tablets of the Old Covenant, the Ten Commandments.

  97. And so the Ark was this kind of remembrance of the Old Covenant.

  98. And on it, the top of the Ark was the mercy seat.

  99. And it was believed, we see it throughout the Old Testament, God would dwell.

  100. He would come in his cloud of presence, the Shekinah glory, and come within the holy of holies to dwell with his people.

  101. It's quite a description.

  102. It was a real way in which God was dwelling with his people.

  103. But what the tabernacle, the earthly tabernacle, with these two sections make very clear is this.

  104. Even though God was with his people, he was separate from his people.

  105. Restricted access.

  106. So we move from the earthly temple.

  107. Now let's talk about the Levitical priests.

  108. In verses 6 and 7, we have this description of priestly duties.

  109. In verse 6, we have kind of the everyday priests who come in and out of that first section, the holy place.

  110. And what they were doing, and they're coming in and going out.

  111. They were tending to the oil in the lampstand.

  112. They were placing the bread of presence.

  113. They were making sure there was incense on the altar.

  114. But what you need to understand is, it was only Levitical priests who were entering the holy place.

  115. No other person from Israel could enter.

  116. Restricted access.

  117. And then we look at verse 7.

  118. And in verse 7, it even gets more restricted.

  119. Because the high priest, only the high priest, could enter the holy of holies only once a year.

  120. And he would enter on what's called the Day of Atonement.

  121. Yom Kippur.

  122. Restricted access.

  123. And now we move to the animal sacrifice.

  124. Of the old covenant.

  125. The former arrangement.

  126. In verses 7 through 10, we see that the high priest, he had to sacrifice a bull.

  127. The shedding of blood to cover his own sin.

  128. Before he'd go into the holy of holies on Yom Kippur.

  129. At which time he would bring in the blood of an unblemished goat.

  130. And sprinkle it upon the mercy seat to cover the sins of Israel for the year.

  131. This was repeated year after year after year.

  132. Could you imagine a time lapse photography?

  133. You know those time lapse photographies of like, of seasons in Yosemite?

  134. Could you just imagine a time lapse photography over 15 or 20 years of the same high priest

  135. entering into the holy of holies with the blood?

  136. And over 10 to 15, 20 years you have this man who's getting more and more aged and decrepit.

  137. Kind of entering into the holy of holies.

  138. Bringing blood and then leaving.

  139. Bringing blood and then leaving.

  140. Do you know what it means?

  141. It's what we read later.

  142. It's the blood of bulls in coats cannot take away sins.

  143. Again and again and again.

  144. And what God's people and us are being reminded of in this is that sin results,

  145. real sin results in real guilt and requires real blood.

  146. Something has to die.

  147. We read in 10.4 that the blood of bulls and goats can, it's impossible to take away sins.

  148. Excuse me, in 9 verses 9 and 10 we read this.

  149. According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered

  150. that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper.

  151. It cannot.

  152. It comes up short.

  153. The blood of bulls and goats, it's impossible for those to take away sins.

  154. It's impossible for animal blood to take away, make clean our consciences, our inner beings.

  155. It's impossible for us.

  156. Animal sacrifice.

  157. All part of the old covenant arrangement.

  158. The seriousness of sin, but couldn't cleanse the heart of sinners.

  159. And so that's why we read 8.7.

  160. For if the first covenant had been faultless,

  161. there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

  162. Or in verse 13 of chapter 8,

  163. and speaking of a new covenant,

  164. he makes the first one obsolete.

  165. This arrangement has been made obsolete.

  166. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish, vanish away.

  167. But did you notice verse 8 in chapter 9?

  168. By this arrangement, the Holy Spirit indicates,

  169. the Holy Spirit speaking a word,

  170. that the way into the holy places is not yet opened,

  171. as long as the first section is still standing,

  172. which is symbolic for the present age.

  173. That word in verse 9, symbolic,

  174. we get the word parable from.

  175. And so the Holy Spirit is pointing to the old covenant arrangement

  176. and saying, hey, you in the present age,

  177. this is a little parable for you.

  178. Learn from it.

  179. And what he's saying is,

  180. as long as this system is up and operational,

  181. it keeps closed,

  182. the true way into

  183. the heavenly tent,

  184. God's heavenly dwelling place.

  185. Don't go back.

  186. Don't go back to the first covenant.

  187. You can't cleanse your guilty conscience.

  188. Only the blood of Christ can.

  189. But I'm guessing the majority of us are like,

  190. I don't care.

  191. I'm not looking to go back to an earthly tabernacle.

  192. I am not looking for a Levitical priest on Google.

  193. I'm definitely not going to Meijer

  194. to find an animal sacrifice.

  195. But what you need to understand is that

  196. though we're not tempted to go back to the old covenant,

  197. we are tempted to look to arrangements

  198. incapable of cleansing our consciences.

  199. We try to mediate our own atonements.

  200. When the check engine light of your soul turns on,

  201. I'm guessing you turn to one of the following early on.

  202. Here's the first one.

  203. When you become aware of the guilt of your sin,

  204. you try to outgood your guilt.

  205. Your thinking is, I just need to do more good than wrong.

  206. And if I do more good than wrong,

  207. God will see that in the end,

  208. and I'll be okay.

  209. But the sad thing is, God doesn't settle accounts that way.

  210. You can't outgood your guilt.

  211. Your guilt for real sin stands against you.

  212. It condemns you.

  213. You can't cover it up with your own do-gooding.

  214. That's not going to work.

  215. Or maybe, instead of trying to outgood your guilt,

  216. you make others pay for your guilt.

  217. This is kind of a victim mentality or blame shifting.

  218. It's a way to avoid taking responsibility for your real sin

  219. and your real guilt and your real consequences that are due.

  220. You're like, this person is the reason why I feel so guilty.

  221. And maybe there's something to that,

  222. but we must take responsibility for our own sin.

  223. Another way that we try to,

  224. another arrangement,

  225. is to try to minimize our guilt.

  226. And the way that we minimize our guilt is

  227. by comparing ourselves to other people.

  228. We're like, you know, I know I'm pretty bad,

  229. but I'm not that bad.

  230. Here's another way that we try to minimize our guilt.

  231. We theologize it.

  232. We say things like this.

  233. God doesn't see that small stuff.

  234. Or we say, God doesn't care about the details like that.

  235. It's not a big deal to him.

  236. He sees that's not significant.

  237. Or the ultimate minimization of God is this.

  238. The ultimate way to minimize your guilt

  239. is by cutting God off.

  240. You know, one of the easiest ways

  241. to be relieved of your guilt

  242. is to separate it from God.

  243. You just say, God doesn't exist.

  244. There is a way you can stop feeling guilty

  245. about your wrongs.

  246. It's just not true.

  247. Other ways that people try to

  248. kind of deal with their guilt,

  249. they implode.

  250. They are so aware.

  251. They're so ashamed.

  252. They're so guilt-ridden.

  253. They can't sleep at night.

  254. And we all know the stories of people

  255. who have taken their own lives

  256. because they're so guilty.

  257. I happen to think

  258. that the primary way

  259. that people seek to deal with their own sin,

  260. they find an arrangement,

  261. is by numbing themselves to their guilt.

  262. You find ways to distract yourself,

  263. to numb yourself

  264. by being busy,

  265. by finding entertainment,

  266. by drinking yourself numb to your guilt,

  267. by smoking yourself numb to your guilt,

  268. by sexing yourself numb to your guilt.

  269. They're just different tactics

  270. to numb yourself to your real guilt.

  271. All these arrangements,

  272. like the old covenant,

  273. are incapable of cleansing,

  274. of purifying,

  275. of perfecting a guilty conscience.

  276. Don't turn to that.

  277. When your check engine light goes on,

  278. don't turn to those things.

  279. They can't cleanse you.

  280. There's only one thing that can cleanse you,

  281. to which we now turn.

  282. What can cleanse your conscience?

  283. Verses 11 through 14,

  284. only Christ's blood

  285. can cleanse your guilty conscience.

  286. That's the point of verses 11 through 14.

  287. And 11 through 14,

  288. it's a contrast.

  289. It's a contrast between

  290. the new covenant arrangement in Christ

  291. and the old covenant arrangement.

  292. What we see in verses 11 through 14

  293. is a better tabernacle,

  294. a better priest,

  295. and a better sacrifice.

  296. Verse 11,

  297. the second half in particular,

  298. we see the better tent.

  299. But when Christ appeared

  300. as a high priest

  301. of the good things that have come,

  302. then through the greater

  303. and more perfect tent,

  304. not made with hands,

  305. that is not of this creation,

  306. he entered once for all

  307. into the holy places.

  308. If you turn back

  309. in your Bible

  310. to Hebrews chapter 8, verse 5,

    Hebrews 8:5

  311. we see that the earthly tabernacle

  312. pointed to the heavenly tabernacle.

  313. In verse 5 we read,

  314. they served a copy

  315. in shadow of the heavenly things.

  316. For when Moses was about

  317. to erect the tent,

  318. Exodus 25 through 31,

  319. when he was about

  320. to erect the tent,

  321. he was instructed by God saying,

  322. see that you make everything

  323. according to the pattern

  324. that was shown you on the mountain.

  325. In other words,

  326. the earthly tabernacle

  327. is patterned off

  328. the heavenly tabernacle.

  329. The heavenly dwelling place,

  330. the heavenly sanctuary,

  331. where God is.

  332. It's not made with human hands.

  333. It's not of this creation.

  334. We're talking about

  335. the actual, present,

  336. permanent, dwelling place

  337. of God.

  338. 8, 1, and 2.

  339. Now the point in what

  340. we are saying is this,

  341. we have such a high priest,

  342. one who is seated

  343. at the right hand

  344. of the throne

  345. of the majesty in heaven,

  346. a minister in the holy places,

  347. in the true tent

  348. that the Lord set up,

  349. not man.

  350. Better tent.

  351. Look at 924.

  352. For Christ has entered

  353. not into holy places

  354. made with hands,

  355. which are copies

  356. of the true things,

  357. but into heaven itself,

  358. now to appear

  359. in the presence of God

  360. on our behalf.

  361. You see,

  362. the new covenant,

  363. what you learned

  364. about last week,

  365. has ushered in

  366. a better tent,

  367. better tabernacle.

  368. And through the blood

  369. of Christ,

  370. we have unrestricted access

  371. to the very presence

  372. of God.

  373. Better tent.

  374. Better priest.

  375. If you look back

  376. at verse 11,

  377. chapter 9,

  378. but when Christ appeared

  379. as a high priest

  380. of the good things

  381. that have come,

  382. high priest

  383. of the good things

  384. that have come.

  385. Remember,

  386. Jesus Christ

  387. is not a priest

  388. in the order

  389. of the Levitical priesthood.

  390. He's a priest

  391. in the order

  392. of Melchizedek,

  393. which means

  394. he is a king priest,

  395. which means

  396. he is indestructible,

  397. which means

  398. he has a permanent priesthood.

  399. Would you repeat

  400. after me?

  401. Christ is my

  402. risen and reigning

  403. priest and king

  404. the anchor

  405. of my soul

  406. whose blood

  407. cleanses

  408. my conscience.

  409. Unlike

  410. the Levitical priests

  411. who were sinners

  412. and died,

  413. Christ

  414. is sinless

  415. and lives

  416. an indestructible

  417. life.

  418. In verse 11,

  419. we read that

  420. but when Christ

  421. appeared

  422. as a high priest.

  423. Did anybody

  424. notice I

  425. didn't mention

  426. verse 10?

  427. If you look

  428. back at verse 10,

  429. but deal only,

  430. speaking of the

  431. old covenant

  432. and its regulations,

  433. they only deal

  434. with food

  435. and drink

  436. and various

  437. washings

  438. outside,

  439. kind of like

  440. ceremonial

  441. cleanness,

  442. regulations

  443. of the body,

  444. external,

  445. imposed until

  446. the time

  447. of reformation.

  448. the time

  449. of

  450. reformation

  451. in the

  452. Greek language

  453. in which the

  454. New Testament

  455. was written

  456. in,

  457. that word

  458. reformation

  459. means to

  460. make straight.

  461. It was used

  462. in first century

  463. medical terminology

  464. in order to

  465. set straight

  466. a broken

  467. arm,

  468. to set

  469. in place

  470. a joint

  471. out of place,

  472. to make it

  473. straight.

  474. And so what

  475. we're being told

  476. here is that

  477. the new covenant

  478. makes straight

  479. what the old

  480. covenant

  481. couldn't.

  482. That time

  483. of reformation

  484. began

  485. when Jesus

  486. appeared.

  487. He brought

  488. the good

  489. things of

  490. the new

  491. covenant

  492. with him.

  493. He came

  494. to make

  495. straight

  496. what was

  497. crooked.

  498. He came

  499. to inaugurate

  500. a new

  501. covenant

  502. that made

  503. the old

  504. covenant

  505. obsolete

  506. and useless.

  507. And notice

  508. in verse 12

  509. that it's

  510. through his

  511. blood

  512. that he

  513. entered

  514. God's

  515. dwelling

  516. place.

  517. And that

  518. once for

  519. all.

  520. Unlike the

  521. priests,

  522. Levitical

  523. priests who

  524. came and

  525. went in

  526. and out

  527. of the

  528. early tent,

  529. remember

  530. that,

  531. those kind

  532. of like

  533. 15 to 20

  534. year photos

  535. of the

  536. high

  537. priest

  538. coming in

  539. and out,

  540. Jesus

  541. has

  542. entered

  543. the

  544. heavenly

  545. dwelling

  546. place of

  547. God

  548. permanently.

  549. If you look

  550. back at

  551. chapter 7

  552. verses 24

  553. and 25,

  554. we read

  555. this,

  556. but he

  557. holds his

  558. priesthood

  559. permanently

  560. because he

  561. continues

  562. forever.

  563. Consequently,

  564. he's able

  565. to save

  566. to the

  567. uttermost

  568. those who

  569. draw near

  570. to God

  571. through him

  572. draw near

  573. into the

  574. heavenly

  575. tent.

  576. Since he

  577. always lives

  578. to make

  579. intercession

  580. for them,

  581. he's a

  582. better

  583. priest

  584. and he

  585. has a

  586. better

  587. ministry.

  588. Especially,

  589. especially,

  590. especially

  591. when the

  592. check engine

  593. light of your

  594. soul turns

  595. on.

  596. better

  597. priest,

  598. better

  599. tent,

  600. better

  601. sacrifice.

  602. What we

  603. see in

  604. verses 11

  605. through 14

  606. is that

  607. this new

  608. covenant

  609. arrangement

  610. is a

  611. better

  612. sacrifice

  613. with better

  614. blood.

  615. Not the

  616. blood of

  617. goats,

  618. bulls,

  619. heifers,

  620. but the

  621. blood of

  622. the unblemished

  623. priest king,

  624. the blood

  625. of Christ.

  626. In verses

  627. 13 and

  628. 14,

  629. we have

  630. what's

  631. called a

  632. lesser to

  633. greater

  634. argument.

  635. It goes

  636. like this.

  637. The

  638. lesser,

  639. verse 13.

  640. For if

  641. the blood

  642. of goats

  643. and bulls

  644. and the

  645. sprinkling

  646. of deviled

  647. persons

  648. with the

  649. ashes of

  650. a heifer

  651. sanctify

  652. for the

  653. purification

  654. of the

  655. flesh,

  656. in other

  657. words,

  658. hey,

  659. the old

  660. covenant

  661. did some

  662. purifying,

  663. it was

  664. of the

  665. outer

  666. person,

  667. it was

  668. good.

  669. If the

  670. blood of

  671. bulls and

  672. goats could

  673. do that,

  674. verse 14,

  675. how much

  676. more?

  677. How much

  678. more will

  679. the blood

  680. of Christ,

  681. who through

  682. the eternal

  683. spirit,

  684. that is the

  685. Holy Spirit

  686. working in

  687. Jesus as

  688. he lived

  689. on this

  690. planet to

  691. live a

  692. perfect

  693. life,

  694. he never,

  695. there was

  696. no,

  697. not once,

  698. a check

  699. engine light

  700. in his

  701. soul,

  702. but the

  703. blood of

  704. Christ who

  705. threw the

  706. eternal

  707. spirit off

  708. himself,

  709. purify our

  710. conscience from

  711. dead works to

  712. serve the

  713. living God,

  714. you see,

  715. the blood of

  716. Christ can

  717. do what the

  718. blood of

  719. animals can't,

  720. purify our

  721. conscience from

  722. dead works,

  723. cleanse us

  724. through and

  725. through,

  726. it's a

  727. comparison

  728. between the

  729. blood of

  730. animals and

  731. the blood

  732. of Christ's,

  733. the blood

  734. of animals,

  735. hey,

  736. can perfect

  737. your body,

  738. make you

  739. clean on the

  740. outside,

  741. but it's

  742. only the

  743. blood of

  744. Christ that

  745. can clean

  746. you in

  747. the inside,

  748. what makes

  749. Christ's blood

  750. better than

  751. the blood of

  752. animals?

  753. why can't

  754. the blood of

  755. bulls and

  756. goats take

  757. away sin,

  758. but the

  759. blood of

  760. Christ can?

  761. Christ is

  762. totally God

  763. and totally

  764. man,

  765. totally,

  766. completely,

  767. utterly man,

  768. sinless life,

  769. perfect

  770. conscience,

  771. perfect

  772. conscience,

  773. and he's

  774. totally God,

  775. eternal,

  776. indestructible,

  777. and when

  778. this totally

  779. God,

  780. totally man,

  781. Jesus Christ

  782. died on the

  783. cross,

  784. his blood

  785. was the

  786. perfect

  787. unblemished

  788. sacrifice,

  789. his death

  790. paid for

  791. your sin

  792. once and

  793. for all

  794. and in

  795. full.

  796. If your

  797. sin provoked

  798. God's eternal

  799. wrath,

  800. Christ's

  801. blood

  802. satisfies

  803. that

  804. eternal

  805. wrath,

  806. because he's

  807. both totally

  808. God and

  809. totally man.

  810. What this

  811. means is that

  812. his blood

  813. secured in

  814. eternal

  815. redemption.

  816. You see that

  817. in verse

  818. 12?

  819. Thus

  820. securing in

  821. eternal

  822. redemption.

  823. That word

  824. redemption is

  825. oftentimes a

  826. kind of a

  827. religious word,

  828. but what it

  829. means is just

  830. another way of

  831. talking about

  832. salvation in

  833. terms of a

  834. transaction.

  835. Redemption,

  836. that language

  837. was used in

  838. the first

  839. century to

  840. describe buying

  841. someone out

  842. of slavery,

  843. or buying

  844. someone out

  845. of prison,

  846. or buying

  847. someone out

  848. of debt,

  849. that you

  850. would pay a

  851. redemption price

  852. called a

  853. ransom,

  854. and that would

  855. free that

  856. person from

  857. prison or

  858. slavery or

  859. debt.

  860. And so

  861. this eternal

  862. redemption that

  863. has been

  864. secured has

  865. been secured

  866. by the

  867. blood of

  868. Christ for

  869. all who

  870. believe.

  871. All of

  872. God's wrath

  873. for all of

  874. your sin was

  875. poured out for

  876. all and in

  877. full on

  878. Christ, which

  879. means all of

  880. your sin, the

  881. penalty of it,

  882. has been

  883. forgiven.

  884. forgiven.

  885. Totally,

  886. utterly,

  887. completely,

  888. really

  889. forgiven.

  890. Let me mix

  891. my metaphors.

  892. Let's say

  893. you have a

  894. fever.

  895. Your fever

  896. means you

  897. have an

  898. infection.

  899. You can

  900. manage your

  901. fever, or

  902. you can use

  903. antibiotics, or

  904. essential oils,

  905. any fans?

  906. to address

  907. the infection.

  908. And when you

  909. address the

  910. infection, the

  911. fever goes

  912. away.

  913. God, through

  914. Christ's blood,

  915. paid the

  916. penalty of

  917. your sin so

  918. that your guilt

  919. fever goes

  920. away.

  921. Christ's blood

  922. is so better

  923. than the blood

  924. of animals.

  925. it does

  926. only what

  927. God can

  928. do.

  929. Remove the

  930. penalty of

  931. sin, and

  932. therefore remove

  933. the guilt of

  934. your sin, and

  935. therefore cleanse

  936. your guilty

  937. conscience.

  938. The real

  939. guilt for your

  940. real sin has

  941. been really

  942. forgiven in

  943. Christ.

  944. It turns

  945. off the

  946. check engine

  947. light.

  948. It relieves

  949. you of the

  950. burden.

  951. Once for

  952. all, and

  953. in full, Christ

  954. shed his

  955. blood for the

  956. penalty of

  957. your sin.

  958. You know

  959. what this

  960. means?

  961. Don't go

  962. back to

  963. to that

  964. which can't

  965. cleanse your

  966. guilty conscience.

  967. Draw near to

  968. who can.

  969. This is good

  970. news.

  971. This is gospel

  972. news for a

  973. guilty conscience.

  974. It's a better

  975. tent, a better

  976. priest, and a

  977. better sacrifice

  978. with better

  979. blood that

  980. establishes a

  981. better redemption

  982. for eternity.

  983. So you know

  984. what we must do?

  985. Here's what we

  986. must do.

  987. three ways to

  988. apply this.

  989. When you are

  990. reminded of

  991. past sins,

  992. anybody in the

  993. room reminded

  994. of past sins?

  995. I've got some

  996. horrific past

  997. sins.

  998. And sometimes

  999. the devil uses

  1000. a flaming arrow

  1001. to launch at

  1002. me.

  1003. When you are

  1004. reminded of

  1005. past sins,

  1006. do you know

  1007. what you need

  1008. to do?

  1009. You need

  1010. to preach.

  1011. You need

  1012. to preach

  1013. the gospel

  1014. to yourself.

  1015. You need

  1016. to say

  1017. things like

  1018. this,

  1019. Christian,

  1020. that sin,

  1021. not in

  1022. part,

  1023. but the

  1024. whole,

  1025. was paid

  1026. for by the

  1027. blood of

  1028. Christ.

  1029. I've been

  1030. cleansed.

  1031. No more

  1032. guilt.

  1033. Am I

  1034. grieved that

  1035. I did that?

  1036. Yes.

  1037. Am I

  1038. guilty that I

  1039. did that?

  1040. No more.

  1041. So the

  1042. first way

  1043. we draw

  1044. near is by

  1045. preaching

  1046. the blood

  1047. to ourselves.

  1048. Nothing but

  1049. the blood

  1050. of Jesus.

  1051. Okay,

  1052. second,

  1053. let's

  1054. just say,

  1055. hypothetically

  1056. speaking,

  1057. you have a

  1058. brother or

  1059. sister in

  1060. Christ,

  1061. and they

  1062. believe that

  1063. Christ's

  1064. blood can

  1065. cleanse them

  1066. of the

  1067. little to

  1068. moderate sized

  1069. sins,

  1070. but not the

  1071. big stuff.

  1072. Not rape,

  1073. too big.

  1074. Not if you

  1075. sold your body

  1076. for money,

  1077. that's too big.

  1078. Not if you

  1079. committed adultery,

  1080. that's too big.

  1081. not if you

  1082. extorted

  1083. somebody,

  1084. not if you

  1085. were part in

  1086. an abortion,

  1087. too big.

  1088. Jenny and I

  1089. recently brought

  1090. our grandson

  1091. Hudson

  1092. through the

  1093. quick trip

  1094. car wash.

  1095. I was

  1096. thrilled.

  1097. Hudson

  1098. didn't care.

  1099. But our

  1100. Honda CRV

  1101. fit perfect.

  1102. Could you

  1103. imagine our

  1104. Honda CRV

  1105. pulling out

  1106. and at the

  1107. other end of

  1108. the quick

  1109. trip car wash

  1110. is an

  1111. 18-wheeler

  1112. tractor trailer

  1113. with a

  1114. 53-foot

  1115. trailer.

  1116. You're like,

  1117. that doesn't

  1118. fit.

  1119. There's some

  1120. people in this

  1121. room right now

  1122. who think that

  1123. you have a

  1124. semi-tractor

  1125. trailer sized

  1126. sin that

  1127. can't fit

  1128. through the

  1129. guilt wash

  1130. of the

  1131. blood.

  1132. It's too

  1133. big.

  1134. It's too

  1135. big.

  1136. I can handle

  1137. my little

  1138. sins but

  1139. can't handle

  1140. the big

  1141. stuff.

  1142. You're

  1143. underestimating

  1144. the blood.

  1145. There is

  1146. no sin

  1147. too

  1148. big

  1149. for the

  1150. guilt wash

  1151. of the

  1152. blood.

  1153. No sin

  1154. too big.

  1155. He is

  1156. able.

  1157. Perhaps

  1158. you and

  1159. your shame

  1160. are thinking

  1161. too little

  1162. of the

  1163. blood.

  1164. Your sin

  1165. is not

  1166. too big

  1167. for the

  1168. blood.

  1169. In fact,

  1170. the blood

  1171. of Christ

  1172. is bigger

  1173. and better

  1174. than the

  1175. biggest sin

  1176. you've ever

  1177. made.

  1178. there is

  1179. forgiveness,

  1180. there is

  1181. cleansing

  1182. through the

  1183. blood.

  1184. So you

  1185. tell your

  1186. friend,

  1187. no,

  1188. that sin

  1189. isn't bigger

  1190. than Christ's

  1191. blood.

  1192. Christ's blood is

  1193. bigger than that.

  1194. The guilt of that

  1195. has been paid

  1196. for.

  1197. I've got plenty

  1198. of 18 wheelers

  1199. that have been

  1200. forgiven and

  1201. cleansed.

  1202. The third

  1203. area is

  1204. this.

  1205. You're like,

  1206. okay,

  1207. okay,

  1208. past sins,

  1209. I get it,

  1210. but what happens

  1211. if I sin

  1212. today?

  1213. What happens

  1214. if I sin

  1215. tomorrow or

  1216. later in

  1217. the week?

  1218. What do

  1219. I do?

  1220. Well,

  1221. this once

  1222. for all

  1223. and in

  1224. full

  1225. blood

  1226. payment,

  1227. that's

  1228. always

  1229. waiting.

  1230. It's

  1231. promised.

  1232. It's been

  1233. done.

  1234. He's

  1235. paid it.

  1236. He's

  1237. in the

  1238. heaven.

  1239. He's

  1240. interceding

  1241. for you.

  1242. So when

  1243. you sin,

  1244. you make

  1245. a beeline

  1246. to your

  1247. priest king.

  1248. You don't

  1249. avoid him.

  1250. You confess

  1251. your sin

  1252. to him.

  1253. Like,

  1254. oh,

  1255. Lord Jesus,

  1256. I did it

  1257. again.

  1258. Paid

  1259. in full

  1260. once

  1261. for all.

  1262. If we

  1263. confess

  1264. our sins,

  1265. he's

  1266. faithful

  1267. and just

  1268. to forgive

  1269. us our

  1270. sins

  1271. and to

  1272. cleanse

  1273. us

  1274. from all

  1275. unrighteousness.

  1276. 1 John

  1277. 1.

  1278. 9.

  1279. And then

  1280. when you

  1281. confess

  1282. your sins,

  1283. you confess

  1284. his peace

  1285. cleansed

  1286. by the

  1287. blood.

  1288. Constantly

  1289. available.

  1290. Your guilt

  1291. has been

  1292. permanently

  1293. removed

  1294. because

  1295. the payment

  1296. has been

  1297. made.

  1298. what can

  1299. cleanse

  1300. your guilty

  1301. conscience?

  1302. Nothing

  1303. but the

  1304. blood

  1305. of

  1306. Jesus.

  1307. We've

  1308. looked at

  1309. what can't

  1310. cleanse

  1311. your guilty

  1312. conscience

  1313. and we've

  1314. looked at

  1315. what can

  1316. cleanse

  1317. your guilty

  1318. conscience.

  1319. So when

  1320. the

  1321. check

  1322. engine

  1323. light of

  1324. your soul

  1325. turns on

  1326. and you

  1327. are feeling

  1328. guilt,

  1329. don't

  1330. turn to

  1331. what can't

  1332. clean

  1333. your conscience.

  1334. Draw near

  1335. to who

  1336. has

  1337. cleaned

  1338. your

  1339. conscience

  1340. only by

  1341. the blood

  1342. of Christ.

  1343. The book

  1344. of Hebrews

  1345. is one

  1346. long

  1347. exhortation

  1348. warning

  1349. us

  1350. to

  1351. don't

  1352. drift,

  1353. to don't

  1354. go back

  1355. and

  1356. encouraging

  1357. us

  1358. to draw

  1359. near,

  1360. to hold

  1361. fast,

  1362. to press

  1363. on,

  1364. and to

  1365. convince

  1366. you

  1367. the blood

  1368. of Christ

  1369. has

  1370. covered

  1371. you

  1372. forever.

  1373. Makes you

  1374. want to say

  1375. thank you.

  1376. Let's pray

  1377. and sing.

  1378. Lord Jesus,

  1379. our

  1380. indestructible

  1381. priest and

  1382. king

  1383. who right

  1384. now you

  1385. are in

  1386. the very

  1387. presence

  1388. of God.

  1389. Thank you.

  1390. Thank you

  1391. for doing

  1392. what none

  1393. of us

  1394. can do

  1395. for no

  1396. blood

  1397. can cover

  1398. your

  1399. blood.

  1400. We thank

  1401. you for

  1402. giving

  1403. yourself

  1404. for us,

  1405. for cleansing

  1406. our

  1407. consciences.

  1408. it is

  1409. such

  1410. good

  1411. news.

  1412. Will

  1413. you

  1414. receive

  1415. our

  1416. praise

  1417. now

  1418. Lord?

  1419. In

  1420. your

  1421. name

  1422. we

  1423. pray.

  1424. Amen.

  1425. Amen.

  1426. Amen.
