  1. Good morning.

  2. If you'd like to, there are plenty of Bibles in the pews around you.

  3. ! I think it's page 780 is where we're going to park a little bit today.

  4. So you can be turning there.

  5. You saw on the back of your bulletin there's a little bit of an outline to follow.

  6. Now, Jeremiah chapter 29 verse 11 may have been a favorite verse of many over the centuries.

    Jeremiah 29:11

  7. But I don't remember people quoting it when I was a kid.

  8. I think that since the escalation of something called the health and wealth movement over the past few decades,

  9. this verse has probably been quoted as a favorite verse and is seen on plaques and in greeting cards

  10. and other Christian merchandise.

  11. In fact, I just received this week a refrigerator magnet of Jeremiah 29 11.

  12. And I put it on my refrigerator, alright?

  13. Generally, this verse is quoted in the New International Version of the Bible.

  14. It goes like this,

  15. Now, on its face, I would say that believers, I want to emphasize that,

  16. believers in the Lord Jesus can say,

  17. Amen.

  18. Certainly, God knows the plans He has for us, right?

  19. I mean, after all, they're His plans, right?

  20. And He works all things according to His will and for His own good pleasure.

  21. His plans are for us good and not evil.

  22. We learn that from many places in the Bible.

  23. In Him, we have hope regarding the future,

  24. at least for our future glorification.

  25. That's certain.

  26. There are good things to remember.

  27. These are good things to remember.

  28. Good reasons to give thanks to God and good reasons to rejoice.

  29. Unfortunately, too many people have fixated their attention on plans to prosper you.

  30. I think assuming material possessions are the focal point of Jeremiah's prophecy.

  31. The expectation of hope in a future is often understood today as short-term

  32. in expectation of or anticipating material blessings here during our earthly lives,

  33. even expecting prosperity in the immediate future.

  34. And I would like for us to look a little bit more closely to the context of this passage.

  35. We'll get there in a couple minutes.

  36. I would like for us to...

  37. And part of the reason is I think that together we need to learn perhaps a little bit more

  38. about how to interpret the Bible

  39. so that we make sure that we interpret it correctly

  40. and that will help us sharpen our focus on the promises that God has made

  41. and promises that He will absolutely keep.

  42. What I don't want to do is to rip off a promise like tearing,

  43. trying to remove a stubborn bandage and leave you in pain.

  44. I'm not trying to do that.

  45. But what I want us to do is to understand this passage in its context

  46. and then see if we can actually accurately and appropriately make some application

  47. and see if we can understand a little bit more what this is saying.

  48. So here's the verse again.

  49. This is from NIV to start with.

  50. We'll get to another translation in a bit.

  51. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,

  52. plans to prosper you and not to harm you,

  53. plans to give you hope and a future.

  54. Let's pray before we get into this.

  55. Father, thank You for Your Word.

  56. Thank You that Your Word is given to us by You

  57. through prophets, apostles, and others who recorded it.

  58. Thank You that we have it.

  59. You desire that we understand it.

  60. And You call us to make appropriate application to it.

  61. And You call us to have our lives driven by it.

  62. So help us, we pray, as we study this text

  63. and then encourage us by the promises that You have made.

  64. For Your promises that are made certainly are always kept.

  65. And we thank You in Jesus' name.

  66. Amen.

  67. All right.

  68. Context in terms of where this verse appears.

  69. Nebuchadnezzar, that's probably a name you know.

  70. Nebuchadnezzar was during the time of Daniel.

  71. He was involved with the Babylonian people,

  72. the Babylonian Empire.

  73. Nebuchadnezzar was leading the Babylonian army.

  74. He besieged Jerusalem about 605 B.C.

  75. And he was on the threshold of taking the city.

  76. In fact, he succeeded actually in bringing the king of Judah, Jehoiakim, to a place of surrender.

  77. And he planned to take him back to Babylon.

  78. But before the process could be completed,

  79. Nebuchadnezzar got a very serious and important message given to him

  80. that his father, the king Nebuchadnezzar, had just died.

  81. Well, he had to hurry and get back to Babylon in order to secure the throne for himself.

  82. So he didn't complete his siege against the city.

  83. But before he left, he did force Jehoiakim, the king of Judah,

  84. to promise loyalty by paying annual tributes.

  85. It went something like this.

  86. You give me money, maybe I won't destroy you.

  87. How's that for an agreement?

  88. That was pretty much what was going on.

  89. So some of the Israelites were deported at this time.

  90. Daniel, you know the stories of Daniel and his three friends.

  91. We know them as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  92. They were all transported back to Babylon.

  93. There are many others that were too.

  94. Well, things went reasonably well during that three years

  95. that Jehoiakim was paying tribute to Nebuchadnezzar.

  96. But at the end of three years, he decided to no longer do that.

  97. That was against the threat of Nebuchadnezzar coming back.

  98. But it was also against the warnings, the vigorous warnings by the prophet Jeremiah.

  99. So actually this verse that we're considering was written to the exiles

  100. from Jerusalem who were in Babylon.

  101. Not to the people in Jerusalem at the time, but to the exiles.

  102. Those who were already there in Babylon, including Daniel and others.

  103. Jeremiah prophesied that the captivity would eventually end,

  104. but it would be many years before it actually would happen.

  105. The city was captured in 597 B.C.,

  106. methodically destroyed by the time of 586 B.C.

  107. Temple gone, walls gone, city gone.

  108. Well, here's a portion of the text that will help us to get a grip

  109. on what Jeremiah 29.11 is saying.

  110. This is from the English Standard Version,

  111. the version that we typically use here at Christ the King Church

  112. when we preach and teach.

  113. So here it is. You can turn there if you like.

  114. It's the beginning of chapter 29.

  115. These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem

  116. to the surviving elders of the exiles,

  117. and to the priests, and to the prophets,

  118. and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile

  119. from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  120. Thus says the Lord of hosts, verse 4,

  121. Now, what's he talking about? Babylon.

  122. Babylon. All you people in Babylon do this.

  123. Seek the welfare of the city, Babylon, where I have sent you in exile,

  124. and pray to the Lord on its behalf,

  125. for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

  126. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,

  127. Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you,

  128. and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,

  129. for it's a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name.

  130. I did not send them, declares the Lord.

  131. For thus says the Lord,

  132. When seventy years are completed for Babylon,

  133. I will visit you.

  134. I will fulfill to you my promise,

  135. and bring you back to this place.

  136. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord.

  137. Plans for welfare, not for evil,

  138. to give you a future and a hope.

  139. So all that related to them being exiled,

  140. and then seventy years brought back.

  141. The rest of the part of the text I'm going to read begins at verse 12.

  142. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me,

  143. and I will hear you.

  144. You will seek me and find me,

  145. and when you seek me with all your heart,

  146. I will be found by you, declares the Lord.

  147. I will restore your fortunes and gather you

  148. from all the nations and all the places where I've driven you,

  149. declares the Lord,

  150. and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.

  151. And that's what happened.

  152. After seventy years,

  153. God's promise was fulfilled.

  154. Judah was allowed back into the land of promise.

  155. But most of the people,

  156. I think this is important to remember,

  157. most of the people in exile,

  158. to whom the letter was written by Jeremiah,

  159. a letter probably written in 594 B.C.,

  160. most of those people never made it back to Jerusalem.

  161. You know why?

  162. Because if they were an adult going into exile,

  163. seventy years passed before they could go back.

  164. Most of them died in Babylon.

  165. Though false prophets,

  166. both in Jerusalem and in Babylon,

  167. claimed the captivity would be over very quickly,

  168. God, through Jeremiah, said no.

  169. Even the time of the captivity was made very clear.

  170. In one of the verses I read,

  171. it was prophesied to be seventy years,

  172. and it was exactly true,

  173. just as God had said.

  174. All right.

  175. So, let's go back to that verse

  176. and see if we can learn a little bit more.

  177. Jeremiah 29 11.

  178. I'm going to read about four different translations,

  179. just to give you an idea of what translators

  180. sometimes do with the text.

  181. The verse that you often see on refrigerator magnets

  182. and other places,

  183. the verses that you see are almost always quoted

  184. in the New International Version.

  185. And here's the verse.

  186. For I know the plans I have for you,

  187. declares the Lord,

  188. plans to prosper you

  189. and not to harm you,

  190. plans to give you hope

  191. in a future.

  192. ESV, which we use,

  193. for I know the plans I have for you,

  194. declares the Lord,

  195. the Lord,

  196. the Lord,

  197. plans for not prosper,

  198. but plans for welfare

  199. and not harm,

  200. but not for evil,

  201. to give you a future

  202. and a hope.

  203. King James,

  204. if you still are using the King James Version,

  205. goes like this.

  206. For I know the thoughts

  207. that I think toward you,

  208. saith the Lord,

  209. thoughts of peace

  210. and not of evil,

  211. to give you an expected end.

  212. The New King James,

  213. which updated a few things,

  214. said,

  215. for I know the thoughts

  216. that I think toward you,

  217. says the Lord,

  218. thoughts of peace,

  219. and not of evil,

  220. to give you a future

  221. and a hope.

  222. So the Hebrew word

  223. that's translated prosper

  224. in the one text,

  225. welfare in another,

  226. and peace in the other two,

  227. is actually the word shalom.

  228. That's the Hebrew word.

  229. So we're going to compare that

  230. a little bit

  231. with another passage,

  232. another verse,

  233. that comes from Jeremiah,

  234. comes from God through Jeremiah,

  235. and it's in Jeremiah chapter 38.

    Jeremiah 38 chapter mention

  236. You can look at that if you like,

  237. chapter 38, verse 4.

  238. When Jerusalem was under siege,

  239. Jeremiah was telling the people

  240. to surrender to the Babylonians

  241. and to go with them

  242. into captivity without resistance.

  243. That was his message.

  244. That's what God had told him to do.

  245. Remember?

  246. Go there

  247. and live the way

  248. you're supposed to live there.

  249. Raise your families there.

  250. Build houses there.

  251. But in 70 years

  252. will bring the nation back.

  253. That was the promise.

  254. Well,

  255. if the Jews refused

  256. and they stayed in Jerusalem,

  257. guess what would happen to them?

  258. They would perish.

  259. So,

  260. Jeremiah's encouraging them,

  261. surrender to Babylon,

  262. go to Babylon in exile.

  263. Here's the verse.

  264. Then the officials,

  265. these are the officials

  266. of Jerusalem,

  267. in Jerusalem,

  268. said to the king,

  269. the king of Judah,

  270. let this man be put to death.

  271. They're talking about Jeremiah.

  272. Let this man be put to death

  273. for he is weakening

  274. the hands of the soldiers

  275. who are left in this city

  276. and the hands of all the people

  277. by speaking such words to them.

  278. For this man is not,

  279. not seeking the welfare

  280. of this people,

  281. but their harm.

  282. Interesting, isn't it?

  283. Just about backwards

  284. of what God had said.

  285. The promise of peace

  286. was given to the exiles

  287. in Babylon,

  288. not to the people

  289. who were in Jerusalem.

  290. God's plan for the exiles

  291. was for their welfare,

  292. not for their harm,

  293. not for evil against them.

  294. If they surrendered

  295. to the Babylonians,

  296. but if they remained

  297. in Jerusalem

  298. resisting the Babylonians,

  299. harm would come to them.

  300. The officials were warning

  301. that if Jeremiah's counsel

  302. was followed,

  303. the results would be

  304. exactly opposite

  305. of what God had said,

  306. God had promised

  307. and Jeremiah had announced.

  308. So Jeremiah was telling

  309. the exiles in Babylon

  310. to live out their lives

  311. in Babylon

  312. as normal as they could.

  313. The promise to return

  314. would come eventually,

  315. but for most,

  316. they would probably

  317. not see it.

  318. That's the background

  319. of our text.

  320. For I know the plans

  321. I have for you,

  322. declares the Lord,

  323. plans for welfare

  324. and not for evil,

  325. to give you a future

  326. and a hope.

  327. Now, let's look at

  328. application just a little bit.

  329. Is there appropriate

  330. application for believers

  331. from Jeremiah 29, verse 11?

    Jeremiah 29:11

  332. Let's start with just looking

  333. at Daniel and his three friends

  334. for a moment.

  335. They were exiled to Babylon

  336. and they remained there.

  337. They rose to prominent positions

  338. there, actually,

  339. but their lives were not

  340. without trials and dangers.

  341. Remember that they were

  342. charged with betrayal

  343. by jealous coworkers.

  344. They were demanded

  345. to bow to idolatrous images

  346. or they would face death

  347. by being burned alive

  348. in a fiery furnace

  349. or thrown into a den

  350. of hungry lions.

  351. You know the stories.

  352. With God's protection,

  353. these people

  354. lived out their years

  355. generally in peace

  356. as God had promised

  357. regarding their welfare

  358. and their protection

  359. from evil.

  360. So do we have

  361. a parallel today?

  362. Well,

  363. though the fulfillment

  364. of the promise

  365. of hope and a future

  366. was decades away,

  367. God's purposes remained

  368. and he was in complete control.

  369. Certainly that's true today.

  370. After 70 years,

  371. God promised his people

  372. that judgment

  373. would be fulfilled

  374. and they would go back

  375. into the land.

  376. But even exile,

  377. God was with his people.

  378. In fact,

  379. I'm sorry,

  380. Isaiah prophesied

  381. about 100 years

  382. before any of this happened

  383. in a passage you know,

  384. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  385. You know the end of it,

  386. I'm sure.

  387. He's talking about Babylon.

  388. He's talking about

  389. what was going to happen.

  390. Ten decades from there.

  391. Behold,

  392. the Lord God comes

  393. with might

  394. and his arm rules

  395. for him.

  396. Behold,

  397. his reward is with him

  398. and his recompense

  399. before him.

  400. He will tread his flock

  401. like a shepherd.

  402. I'm sorry,

  403. tend his flock

  404. like a shepherd.

  405. He will gather

  406. the lambs in his arms.

  407. He will carry them

  408. in his bosom

  409. and gently lead

  410. those that are

  411. with young.

  412. even youths

  413. shall faint

  414. and be weary

  415. and young men

  416. shall fall exhausted

  417. but those who wait

  418. for the Lord

  419. shall renew their strength.

  420. They shall mount up

  421. with wings

  422. like eagles.

  423. They shall run

  424. and not be weary.

  425. They shall walk

  426. and not faint.

  427. Most likely a prophecy

  428. for the people

  429. in Babylon.

  430. Now I think

  431. we can make

  432. a good case

  433. right now

  434. that we as believers

  435. are essentially

  436. aliens,

  437. exiles,

  438. right?

  439. I mean,

  440. we are living

  441. in a Babylonish world,

  442. okay?

  443. We're living

  444. in a lost world,

  445. a messed up world,

  446. a terrible world

  447. and so in that sense

  448. we are kind of like

  449. the exiles

  450. of Judah

  451. and we need

  452. to remember

  453. that our citizenship

  454. is in heaven

  455. and Jesus promises

  456. us that we will

  457. have tribulations

  458. here,

  459. right?

  460. But remember

  461. what he said,

  462. in me

  463. you will have

  464. peace.

  465. It's a great promise.

  466. And then he said,

  467. take heart,

  468. I have overcome

  469. the world.

  470. So though we may

  471. live in a Babylonish

  472. world kind of today

  473. and we are exiles

  474. on our way

  475. to heaven,

  476. the problems

  477. are there,

  478. the difficulties

  479. are there,

  480. but we have

  481. his peace

  482. and we have

  483. the assurance

  484. that he has

  485. overcome the world.

  486. Now there's no

  487. promise

  488. guaranteeing

  489. that we will be

  490. healthy and wealthy

  491. throughout this life.

  492. In fact,

  493. any biblical promises

  494. of prosperity

  495. for the believer

  496. is spiritual.

  497. It's not physical.

  498. Some may live

  499. a long time

  500. and have excellent

  501. health.

  502. Others may be

  503. sickly most

  504. of their lives.

  505. Some will gain

  506. much of this

  507. world's possessions

  508. while others

  509. will have very little.

  510. Any riches

  511. we might possess

  512. did not come to us

  513. as rewards

  514. for faithfulness.

  515. In fact,

  516. sometimes

  517. they are more

  518. of a curse

  519. than a blessing.

  520. The Bible

  521. talks about that.

  522. They are often

  523. a distraction

  524. from following

  525. Jesus.

  526. Contentment

  527. is the blessing

  528. regardless of

  529. whether we have

  530. little or much.

  531. Thanks for that,

  532. Zach,

  533. yesterday.

  534. God has

  535. to understand

  536. the plans

  537. God has

  538. for us

  539. and for our

  540. peace

  541. and for our

  542. hope

  543. and for our

  544. future.

  545. What I'd like to do

  546. is take those

  547. concepts

  548. that appear

  549. in Jeremiah 29

  550. and transpose

  551. those,

  552. if you will,

  553. to the New Testament

  554. and give you

  555. promises

  556. promises

  557. that were

  558. specifically

  559. given

  560. to us

  561. as believers

  562. in Jesus

  563. right now.

  564. Okay?

  565. So let's start

  566. with a sample

  567. of New Testament

  568. promises

  569. given to us

  570. by God

  571. about His

  572. plans for us.

  573. I love this

  574. passage.

  575. You know it,

  576. but sometimes

  577. we don't get

  578. the magnitude

  579. of it.

  580. For we know

  581. that those

  582. who love God,

  583. let me read it

  584. again,

  585. and we know

  586. that for those

  587. who love God,

  588. all things,

  589. all things

  590. work together

  591. for good.

  592. Not all things

  593. are good.

  594. All things work

  595. together for good

  596. for those

  597. who are called

  598. according to

  599. His purpose.

  600. Talk about plans

  601. that God has

  602. for us.

  603. That's amazing.

  604. What about this?

  605. This gets even

  606. more specific.

  607. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:31–32

  608. verses 31-32.

  609. If God is for us,

  610. what?

  611. Who can be

  612. against us?

  613. He who did not

  614. spare His own

  615. Son but gave

  616. Him up for us

  617. all, how will

  618. He not also

  619. with Him

  620. graciously give

  621. us all things?

  622. And the all

  623. things are all

  624. the things we

  625. live to live

  626. godly in Christ

  627. Jesus.

  628. That's His

  629. promise to us.

  630. Or how about

  631. this?

  632. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  633. 1.

  634. In Him we have

  635. redemption

  636. through His blood,

  637. the forgiveness

  638. of our trespasses

  639. according to

  640. the riches

  641. of His grace

  642. which He

  643. lavished on us

  644. in all wisdom

  645. and insight

  646. making known

  647. to us the

  648. mystery of His

  649. will according

  650. to His purpose

  651. which He set

  652. forth in Christ

  653. as a plan

  654. for the fullness

  655. of time

  656. to unite all

  657. things in Him,

  658. things in heaven

  659. and things on earth.

  660. Wow.

  661. They're His plans

  662. for us.

  663. That good?

  664. And remember

  665. what God

  666. promises

  667. He always

  668. answers.

  669. He keeps

  670. His promises.

  671. Alright,

  672. how about

  673. peace?

  674. The Bible

  675. has some

  676. things to say

  677. about peace.

  678. Jesus said

  679. to His

  680. disciples,

  681. Peace I

  682. leave with

  683. you,

  684. my peace

  685. I give

  686. to you,

  687. not as the

  688. world gives

  689. do I give

  690. to you,

  691. let not your

  692. hearts be

  693. troubled,

  694. neither let

  695. them be

  696. afraid.

  697. Whatever our

  698. circumstances,

  699. we have

  700. His peace.

  701. That's a

  702. promise.

  703. peace.

  704. And the

  705. peace of

  706. God,

  707. he says

  708. in Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  709. chapter 3,

  710. Paul writes,

  711. and the

  712. peace of

  713. God which

  714. surpasses

  715. all

  716. understanding

  717. will guard

  718. your hearts

  719. and your

  720. minds in

  721. Christ Jesus.

  722. I'm so

  723. grateful we

  724. have something

  725. guarding that.

  726. Peace

  727. seems like

  728. for many

  729. of us

  730. sort of

  731. one of

  732. those

  733. it drifts

  734. in and

  735. out

  736. kind of

  737. thing.

  738. No,

  739. no,

  740. God

  741. guards

  742. His

  743. peace

  744. in us.

  745. Peace of

  746. God which

  747. surpasses

  748. all

  749. understanding

  750. will guard

  751. your

  752. hearts

  753. and

  754. your

  755. minds.

  756. Let's

  757. look at

  758. Romans 5.

  759. Since we

  760. have been

  761. justified

  762. by faith,

  763. we have

  764. peace

  765. with God

  766. through our

  767. Lord Jesus

  768. Christ.

  769. Through

  770. Him,

  771. we have

  772. also

  773. obtained

  774. access

  775. by faith

  776. into this

  777. grace in

  778. which we

  779. stand and

  780. we rejoice

  781. in hope

  782. of the

  783. glory of

  784. God.

  785. That gives

  786. us a

  787. transition

  788. now to

  789. hope.

  790. Here's

  791. some

  792. samples

  793. of what

  794. the

  795. Bible

  796. has

  797. to

  798. say

  799. to

  800. us.

  801. Promises

  802. of

  803. God

  804. to

  805. believers

  806. about

  807. hope.

  808. Here's

  809. the first

  810. one.

  811. No,

  812. in all

  813. these

  814. things

  815. we are

  816. more

  817. than

  818. conquerors

  819. through

  820. Him

  821. who

  822. loved

  823. us.

  824. These

  825. are

  826. Paul's

  827. words.

  828. They're

  829. amazing.

  830. For

  831. I am

  832. sure

  833. that

  834. neither

  835. death

  836. nor

  837. life

  838. nor

  839. angels

  840. nor

  841. rulers

  842. nor

  843. things

  844. present

  845. nor

  846. things

  847. to

  848. come

  849. nor

  850. powers

  851. nor

  852. height

  853. nor

  854. depth

  855. anything

  856. else

  857. in all

  858. creation

  859. will be

  860. able to

  861. separate

  862. us

  863. from the

  864. love of

  865. God

  866. in

  867. Christ

  868. Jesus

  869. our

  870. Lord.

  871. That

  872. is

  873. hope.

  874. Amazing

  875. hope.

  876. We read

  877. from the

  878. words of

  879. Jesus

  880. in John

  881. 14.

  882. Let not

  883. your hearts

  884. be troubled.

  885. Believe in

  886. God,

  887. believe also

  888. in me.

  889. In my

  890. Father's

  891. house

  892. are many

  893. rooms.

  894. If it

  895. were not

  896. so,

  897. would I

  898. have told

  899. you that

  900. I go

  901. to prepare

  902. a place

  903. for you?

  904. And if

  905. I go

  906. and prepare

  907. a place

  908. for you,

  909. I will

  910. come again

  911. and take

  912. you to

  913. myself,

  914. that where

  915. I am,

  916. you may

  917. be also.

  918. Do you

  919. realize that

  920. the promise

  921. that God

  922. has made

  923. for everybody

  924. who belongs

  925. to Jesus

  926. is someday

  927. you will be

  928. with Him?

  929. Face

  930. to face?

  931. That's

  932. hope.

  933. And this

  934. I love

  935. from Peter

  936. chapter 1.

  937. Blessed

  938. be the

  939. God and

  940. Father of

  941. our Lord

  942. Jesus

  943. Christ.

  944. According

  945. to His

  946. great

  947. mercy,

  948. He has

  949. caused

  950. us to

  951. be born

  952. again

  953. to a

  954. living

  955. hope

  956. through

  957. the

  958. resurrection

  959. of Jesus

  960. Christ

  961. from the

  962. dead.

  963. Though

  964. we have

  965. not

  966. seen

  967. Him,

  968. though

  969. you have

  970. not

  971. seen

  972. Him,

  973. you love

  974. Him.

  975. And though

  976. you do

  977. not now

  978. see Him,

  979. you believe

  980. in Him

  981. and rejoice

  982. with joy

  983. that is

  984. inexpressible

  985. and filled

  986. with glory,

  987. obtaining

  988. the outcome

  989. of your

  990. faith,

  991. the salvation

  992. of your

  993. souls.

  994. And then

  995. verse 13

  996. of chapter 1

  997. he says,

  998. set your

  999. hope

  1000. fully

  1001. on the

  1002. grace

  1003. that will

  1004. be brought

  1005. to you

  1006. at the

  1007. revelation

  1008. of Jesus

  1009. Christ.

  1010. That means

  1011. our hope

  1012. becomes

  1013. reality.

  1014. Our

  1015. assurance

  1016. is made

  1017. full

  1018. in the

  1019. presence

  1020. of Jesus.

  1021. And I love

  1022. this passage.

  1023. 1 John 3

  1024. See what kind

  1025. of love the

  1026. Father has

  1027. given to us?

  1028. That we should

  1029. be called

  1030. children of

  1031. God?

  1032. And so

  1033. we are,

  1034. John writes.

  1035. The reason

  1036. why this

  1037. world does

  1038. not know

  1039. us is that

  1040. it did

  1041. not know

  1042. Him.

  1043. Beloved,

  1044. we are

  1045. God's

  1046. children

  1047. now and

  1048. what we

  1049. will be

  1050. has not

  1051. yet appeared

  1052. but we

  1053. know that

  1054. when He

  1055. appears

  1056. we shall

  1057. be like

  1058. Him

  1059. because we

  1060. shall see

  1061. Him as

  1062. He is.

  1063. And everyone

  1064. who has

  1065. and everyone

  1066. who thus

  1067. hopes in

  1068. Him

  1069. purifies

  1070. Himself

  1071. even as

  1072. He is

  1073. pure.

  1074. That's

  1075. real hope

  1076. directed

  1077. to a

  1078. certain

  1079. future.

  1080. And what

  1081. is that

  1082. future for

  1083. us?

  1084. Here are

  1085. some passages

  1086. that remind

  1087. us of

  1088. those

  1089. promises.

  1090. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1091. chapter 8

  1092. again.

  1093. For

  1094. those

  1095. whom

  1096. He

  1097. foreknew

  1098. He also

  1099. predestined

  1100. to be

  1101. conformed

  1102. to the

  1103. image

  1104. of His

  1105. Son.

  1106. It's

  1107. going to

  1108. happen.

  1109. I look

  1110. at myself

  1111. and it

  1112. isn't even

  1113. close to

  1114. being in

  1115. the image

  1116. of Jesus.

  1117. But the

  1118. promise that

  1119. God makes

  1120. is if

  1121. He foreknew

  1122. me,

  1123. if He

  1124. loved me a

  1125. long time

  1126. ago,

  1127. predestined

  1128. me to be

  1129. conformed to

  1130. the image

  1131. of His

  1132. Son,

  1133. it's going

  1134. to happen.

  1135. That's

  1136. His

  1137. promise.

  1138. And those

  1139. whom He

  1140. predestined

  1141. He also

  1142. called,

  1143. and those

  1144. whom He

  1145. called He

  1146. also

  1147. justified,

  1148. declared as

  1149. righteous,

  1150. and those

  1151. whom He

  1152. justified He

  1153. also glorified.

  1154. It's very

  1155. interesting,

  1156. Paul uses

  1157. all past tense

  1158. words there.

  1159. Now,

  1160. I get the

  1161. predestined

  1162. and the

  1163. conformed

  1164. and the

  1165. called

  1166. and the

  1167. justified,

  1168. but I

  1169. got news

  1170. for you,

  1171. I'm not

  1172. glorified yet.

  1173. Starting with

  1174. my voice

  1175. today,

  1176. sorry about

  1177. that.

  1178. We're not

  1179. glorified,

  1180. we got

  1181. aches and

  1182. pains and

  1183. difficulties and

  1184. problems and

  1185. the only thing

  1186. certain for us

  1187. in the future

  1188. is probably a

  1189. box,

  1190. okay?

  1191. I mean,

  1192. that's where

  1193. we're kind of

  1194. heading,

  1195. unless Jesus

  1196. comes back,

  1197. right?

  1198. But Paul

  1199. says,

  1200. it is so

  1201. certain to

  1202. happen,

  1203. I already

  1204. wrote it as

  1205. if it did.

  1206. Not only have

  1207. you been

  1208. called,

  1209. and not only have

  1210. you been

  1211. justified,

  1212. you have

  1213. been glorified

  1214. in God's

  1215. plan and

  1216. purpose,

  1217. that is

  1218. your future

  1219. guaranteed.

  1220. That's

  1221. amazing.

  1222. And he

  1223. goes on,

  1224. Jesus said

  1225. to Martha

  1226. at the funeral

  1227. of Lazarus,

  1228. I'm the

  1229. resurrection

  1230. and the

  1231. life.

  1232. Whoever

  1233. believes in

  1234. me,

  1235. though he

  1236. die,

  1237. yet shall

  1238. he live.

  1239. And everyone

  1240. who lives

  1241. and believes

  1242. in me shall

  1243. never die.

  1244. The promise

  1245. for my

  1246. future is,

  1247. the day I

  1248. close my

  1249. eyes on

  1250. the planet

  1251. earth and

  1252. open them

  1253. again,

  1254. I will be

  1255. in heaven.

  1256. Death,

  1257. though he

  1258. die,

  1259. yet shall

  1260. he live.

  1261. That's

  1262. God's

  1263. promise.

  1264. That's

  1265. amazing.

  1266. And how

  1267. about this?

  1268. Titus

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  1269. chapter 3,

  1270. but when

  1271. the goodness

  1272. and loving

  1273. kindness of

  1274. God,

  1275. our Savior

  1276. appeared,

  1277. he saved

  1278. us,

  1279. not because

  1280. of works

  1281. done by

  1282. us in

  1283. righteousness,

  1284. but according

  1285. to his

  1286. own mercy,

  1287. by the

  1288. washing of

  1289. regeneration

  1290. and renewal

  1291. of the Holy

  1292. Spirit,

  1293. whom he

  1294. poured out

  1295. on us

  1296. richly

  1297. through Jesus

  1298. Christ,

  1299. our Savior,

  1300. so that being

  1301. justified by

  1302. his grace,

  1303. we might

  1304. become heirs

  1305. according to

  1306. the hope

  1307. of eternal

  1308. life.

  1309. A couple

  1310. more.

  1311. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  1312. chapter 4,

  1313. for the

  1314. Lord himself

  1315. will descend

  1316. from heaven

  1317. with the

  1318. cry of

  1319. command,

  1320. with the

  1321. voice of

  1322. the

  1323. archangel,

  1324. with the

  1325. sound of

  1326. the trumpet

  1327. of God,

  1328. in the

  1329. dead in

  1330. Christ,

  1331. our bodies

  1332. rise first.

  1333. Then we

  1334. who are

  1335. alive and

  1336. remain,

  1337. who are

  1338. left,

  1339. will be

  1340. caught up

  1341. together with

  1342. him in

  1343. the clouds

  1344. to meet

  1345. the Lord

  1346. in the

  1347. air,

  1348. in this

  1349. part of

  1350. the promise.

  1351. And so

  1352. we will

  1353. always be

  1354. with the

  1355. Lord.

  1356. What a

  1357. promise.

  1358. And then

  1359. one of my

  1360. favorite verses

  1361. in all the

  1362. Bible,

  1363. Jude 24

  1364. and 25,

  1365. now to

  1366. him who

  1367. is able to

  1368. keep you

  1369. from stumbling

  1370. and to

  1371. present you

  1372. blameless

  1373. before the

  1374. presence of

  1375. his glory

  1376. with great

  1377. joy,

  1378. to the

  1379. only God

  1380. our Savior

  1381. through Jesus

  1382. Christ our

  1383. Lord,

  1384. be glory,

  1385. majesty,

  1386. dominion,

  1387. and authority

  1388. before all

  1389. time and

  1390. now and

  1391. forevermore.

  1392. Amen.

  1393. Now that

  1394. believer is

  1395. what God

  1396. has planned

  1397. for you.

  1398. That's your

  1399. hope in

  1400. him.

  1401. That's your

  1402. future in

  1403. Jesus Christ.

  1404. Our great

  1405. God has

  1406. plans for

  1407. us and

  1408. he's going

  1409. to work

  1410. them out,

  1411. all those

  1412. plans to

  1413. perfection.

  1414. Those plans

  1415. are not

  1416. for evil.

  1417. Those plans

  1418. are for

  1419. peace,

  1420. his peace

  1421. which he

  1422. promised

  1423. to us.

  1424. It's for

  1425. our

  1426. spiritual

  1427. welfare

  1428. which he

  1429. promised

  1430. us.

  1431. He has

  1432. promised us

  1433. a future

  1434. that will

  1435. ultimately

  1436. open up

  1437. into eternity

  1438. with him.

  1439. That's our

  1440. hope.

  1441. That's our

  1442. confidence.

  1443. That's our

  1444. assurance.

  1445. What the

  1446. Lord said to

  1447. the Jews

  1448. in exile

  1449. through the

  1450. prophet Jeremiah

  1451. was very

  1452. good and

  1453. very encouraging.

  1454. But what

  1455. he has

  1456. promised to

  1457. us is

  1458. beyond

  1459. comparison.

  1460. Hallelujah.

  1461. To our

  1462. wonderful

  1463. counselor

  1464. who has

  1465. declared his

  1466. plans and

  1467. his purpose

  1468. for us.

  1469. Who as

  1470. the prince

  1471. of peace

  1472. has extended

  1473. to us

  1474. a peace

  1475. that passes

  1476. all understanding.

  1477. As the

  1478. father of

  1479. eternity

  1480. has our

  1481. future in

  1482. his hands

  1483. and as

  1484. the God

  1485. of might

  1486. he will

  1487. not let

  1488. go.

  1489. To know

  1490. and love

  1491. this God

  1492. is to

  1493. have hope

  1494. that it

  1495. will never

  1496. dissipate

  1497. or be

  1498. lost.

  1499. All of

  1500. this

  1501. and more

  1502. is yours

  1503. if you

  1504. belong to

  1505. the Lord

  1506. Jesus

  1507. Christ.

  1508. Have you

  1509. trusted him?

  1510. If not

  1511. ask him to

  1512. save you

  1513. and watch

  1514. what he

  1515. does.

  1516. He has a

  1517. plan that

  1518. includes peace

  1519. and hope

  1520. and a future

  1521. for all who

  1522. belong to

  1523. him.

  1524. Hallelujah.

  1525. Thank you

  1526. Jesus

  1527. for what

  1528. you promised

  1529. us.

  1530. I'm hanging

  1531. on to those

  1532. promises.

  1533. Unfortunately

  1534. he's got a

  1535. hold of them

  1536. even tighter

  1537. and they

  1538. will come

  1539. true.

  1540. We've got

  1541. an amazing

  1542. future out

  1543. of us.

  1544. Let's pray.

  1545. Father

  1546. we thank

  1547. you for

  1548. your word

  1549. and we thank

  1550. you that

  1551. your word

  1552. is clear.

  1553. We thank

  1554. you that if

  1555. we spend

  1556. a little bit

  1557. of time

  1558. looking at

  1559. it we may

  1560. discover

  1561. truths that

  1562. we never

  1563. really

  1564. realized.

  1565. We never

  1566. saw them

  1567. there before.

  1568. We never

  1569. were able to

  1570. get into the

  1571. depth of

  1572. what they

  1573. mean.

  1574. We thank

  1575. you that

  1576. you are

  1577. a God

  1578. who gives

  1579. promises

  1580. throughout

  1581. your word.

  1582. And to

  1583. us you've

  1584. given many

  1585. promises

  1586. and you

  1587. keep them.

  1588. And we

  1589. thank you

  1590. for that.

  1591. Our confidence

  1592. is in you

  1593. because you

  1594. always do

  1595. what you

  1596. say.

  1597. And so

  1598. we rest

  1599. in you.

  1600. If there

  1601. are some

  1602. here who

  1603. do not

  1604. know you

  1605. and never

  1606. trusted you

  1607. as Savior

  1608. and Lord,

  1609. dear Father

  1610. I pray that

  1611. you would

  1612. call them.

  1613. That you

  1614. would open

  1615. their heart

  1616. to believe.

  1617. That they

  1618. would cry

  1619. out to you

  1620. that they

  1621. want to know

  1622. you and

  1623. trust you.

  1624. And you

  1625. would bring

  1626. new life

  1627. into their

  1628. heart.

  1629. Save them.

  1630. justify them.

  1631. Declare them

  1632. righteous.

  1633. Welcome them

  1634. into the

  1635. family.

  1636. And all

  1637. those promises

  1638. then are

  1639. applied to

  1640. them.

  1641. Grant that

  1642. we pray

  1643. in your

  1644. name.

  1645. Your precious

  1646. name.

  1647. Amen.
