  1. Good morning. It's good to be back with you. I was here last week. I know some of you

  2. ! I know some of you weren't here last week. So just a brief introduction so I'm not too much

  3. ! of a stranger. Do you have the photo of my whole family there? So this is my whole family.

  4. I'm delighted this morning to have my wife with me, Jessica, and my son, Trevor, and then

  5. we have three others who are about to say youngsters, but they're less and less youngsters.

  6. And so and then I'm part of a ministry called Promote Humility, and we do workshops and coaching

  7. and have some initiatives, focus on disability ministry around the world and other aspects

  8. of what it means to grow in humility. And so that's a little about me. And Pastor Mike,

  9. we actually went to the same seminary at the same time, and we have some overlapping relationships.

  10. So he invited me here, and he's been in Alaska, where my wife and I served for 10 years. And so

  11. when I asked last week how many people have been to Alaska, I was very disappointed in the number

  12. of people who are here. So it's God's country up there. It's beautiful.

  13. But we're in... So Pastor Mike said, you know, Phil, could you come with a two-part series?

  14. And so I thought, you know, let's just go to Revelation for two weeks, right? Just something

  15. really easy. But what I've been wanting to do here is to really rekindle your interest,

  16. draw toward this incredible book of Revelation. Pastor Mike said he preached it back in 2018.

  17. I'm sure you remember most of those sermons. But we always need to be refreshed in our memory of

  18. God's Word. Last week, and I'm trying to come at Revelation from some angles that you may not

  19. think about often. And sometimes you come to the book of Revelation, and people talk about timelines.

  20. And I'm coming from a different angle of... Well, last week, we looked at this incredible imagery

  21. of the Lamb on the throne. Over two dozen times or so, he's called the Lamb on the throne. Not the Lion

  22. on the throne. A lamb on the throne. And so what we did was we took apart different layers of what

  23. that image, imagery is. He's a lamb. Image of weakness. But he's a lamb that was... But we don't just

  24. think of the symbolism just from thin air. We look at the context. And we saw in the context,

  25. there's emphasis this lamb was slain. And then we go another... We peeled back another layer of this

  26. onion. And we saw in the context in chapter 5 that this lamb, he was slain, but he's conquered.

  27. And then he invites his sheep to follow him, to conquer along with him and reign with him.

  28. And so this week, I thought we would come at Revelation from yet another angle.

  29. And we'll do that by looking at chapters 2 and 3, where there's seven messages. So if you turn,

  30. if you haven't already turned to Revelation, we'll focus on chapters 2 and 3.

  31. And you recall, if you were here last week, we talked about this very interesting genre of Revelation,

  32. where it's kind of three genres mixed. There's apocalyptic, so there's a lot of imagery and

  33. metaphor and all these layers. There's prophecy. It says very explicitly that prophecies are things

  34. it's saying will come in the future. And it's also a letter. It's a letter that the apostle John

  35. wrote to these churches.

  36. I'm very grateful that was part of our passage today. And chapter 1 was read. So go back to chapter 1,

  37. because before we get to chapter 2, I want to just set the context there.

  38. But what I like to do before we start reading Scripture is to pray as we come to God's Word. So would

  39. you close your eyes and bow your heads and just take a moment, ask God to speak to you through his Word

  40. this morning.

  41. Amen.

  42. You are a glorious Christ.

  43. We want to stand in awe of you. We want to see you clearer.

  44. Father, would you send your Spirit to just open our eyes so we might see another layer of your majesty

  45. and greatness and goodness and grace. And our hearts, whatever our hearts need this morning,

  46. you would bring through your Word. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. So, the passage this morning that was read was chapter 1, verse 12. But if you'd go back just a little

  49. before that to chapter 1, verse 9, just to set the context a little bit. And you see here,

  50. chapter 1, and if you're still looking for the book of Revelation, last book of the Bible,

  51. chapter 1, verse 9. I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom

  52. and the patient endurance that are in Jesus was on the island called Patmos on account of the Word of God

  53. and the testimony of Jesus. And I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice

  54. like a trumpet saying, write what you see in a book and send it. So, it's a book that's made into a kind of a letter

  55. because it's being sent to the seven churches, Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira

  56. and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea. And in chapters, if you just flip the page there,

  57. chapters 2 and 3 are to those seven churches in that order. These churches were in the,

  58. what's geography, it's where Turkey is right now on the western side of Turkey. And it's as if

  59. these are all kind of in an order as if a mailman was going around to these different churches.

  60. One thing to keep in mind as we look at the passage we are today, I just want, I titled this message

  61. Stunning Generosity. Last week, we saw this stunning reveal as the Lamb was revealed on the

  62. throne and we marveled at the fact that it's a Lamb. In the back of your mind here, I want you to think

  63. about the stunning generosity of this Lamb. And we saw the glorious picture of this Jesus as was read

  64. earlier of chapter 1, verses 12 and following of this glorious King in which John falls before.

  65. His face shining like the sun in full strength.

  66. We already see God's generosity. This glorious one is among the lampstands. Do you see that in verse 12?

  67. There's seven golden lampstands. And then at the very end of chapter 1, it says in the seven lampstands

  68. are the seven churches. So there's this picture of this glorious, bright, really terrifying,

  69. conquering, glorious one. And he's walking among the churches. You think about Kenosha.

  70. This king walking among his people. And so you say this glorious generosity of this king coming along to

  71. this people and each church having its specific issue. He knows these churches and he knows the

  72. particular temptations of some, discouragements of some, where they need to be warned, where they need

  73. to be encouraged. He knows his people like a tender shepherd. By the way, something I was just thinking

  74. about. Isn't that interesting that he's described in such glorious terms here in chapter 1? So bright and

  75. fearsome. It could have been that the descriptions of Jesus for the rest of the book could have been

  76. the glorious one on the throne. But he's described as a lamb on the throne. It's very interesting how the

  77. book is put together. So it's written to seven churches, or this whole book is written to seven

  78. churches. But it's all within, and here's very interesting, it's all within one book.

  79. So think about the other letters in the Bible. You have a book to Corinth. It's to, you know,

  80. one location. There may be some house churches in that book, but it's to Corinth. Or it's to Thessalonica.

  81. But we have something very unique here, and something to keep in mind as you read the book of Revelation.

  82. It's one letter written to seven churches in very unique situations. They need the book of Revelation

  83. for a different reason. Again, some that need to be warned. Some need to be encouraged.

  84. So in a sense, you need to read the book of Revelation seven times at least.

  85. Having read the context of each of these seven churches,

  86. they are seven letters or messages in chapter two and three.

  87. What was it like in that particular church? What were they facing? What were the temptations or

  88. discouragements? And then,

  89. read the book of Revelation. What did they need to hear?

  90. What we're going to do today is, just like last week, we peeled an onion.

  91. Today, we're going to go the opposite direction.

  92. We're going to be like an image of a telescope.

  93. We're going to focus on one of these churches. We're just going to start with the first one.

  94. We're going to look at the book of, or the message

  95. to the church in Ephesus, chapter two, verses one through seven.

  96. We'll focus in on that. And then what we'll do is, we'll take a,

  97. we'll change the lens a little bit.

  98. And then we'll, and then we'll change it once again.

  99. What was it like for Ephesians to get this message to them particularly?

  100. But then,

  101. what was it like for the Ephesians to read the other people's mail?

  102. Do you realize that?

  103. These aren't just individual messages to this particular church,

  104. but they are given the opportunity to read other people's mail and see what was said.

  105. And it's very interesting what the Ephesians need to hear as they read what was written to the other churches.

  106. Because the one phrase that's repeated exactly the same in each,

  107. each message,

  108. you can see it in chapter two, verse seven.

  109. He who has an ear,

  110. let him hear what the Spirit says to the

  111. Ephesians?

  112. No, to the churches, all the churches.

  113. That same phrase is said each place.

  114. Listen to what

  115. Jesus is saying to all the churches.

  116. You need this.

  117. And we'll find,

  118. especially with Ephesians,

  119. that the message of the Ephesians is that,

  120. and these seven,

  121. there's seven by the way,

  122. a characteristic of literature

  123. in the Bible often is a chiastic structure.

  124. That means there's a similarity between the first and the last.

  125. There's a similarity between the second and the second to last, etc.

  126. And that's what we actually find here.

  127. If you want to look at two churches that there was only encouragement,

  128. there was no warning,

  129. they only needed to be challenged to persevere,

  130. it's the second and the second to last.

  131. And we'll find today

  132. is the first and the last,

  133. Ephesus and Laodicea.

  134. There's some similarities

  135. of what their challenges were

  136. and what they needed to hear.

  137. So, let's look at the telescope here.

  138. Let's just look at Ephesus, okay?

  139. And what we have is a warning.

  140. Chapter 2, verse 2.

  141. Jesus is saying,

  142. and by the way, back up in verse 1,

  143. to the angel of the church in Ephesus.

  144. Now, that could be just the leader of the church.

  145. The words of him who holds the seven stars in his hands

  146. and who walks,

  147. I love this,

  148. walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  149. That is, he walks among the churches.

  150. He knows what they need.

  151. And this is what this particular church needs.

  152. I know your works,

  153. your toil,

  154. and your patient endurance

  155. and how you cannot bear

  156. with those who are evil

  157. but have tested those

  158. who call themselves apostles

  159. and are not

  160. and found them to be false.

  161. I know you are enduring patiently

  162. and bearing up for my name's sake

  163. and you have not grown weary.

  164. This is an amazing church.

  165. I'd recommend you go to this church

  166. by what's been written already.

  167. Here are some,

  168. what's admirable about this,

  169. admirable strength.

  170. Do you notice there,

  171. they've not,

  172. they've not grown weary.

  173. Patient endurance.

  174. There's been,

  175. there's been hardship.

  176. There's been persecution.

  177. There's been hard things

  178. but they have persevered.

  179. They're not like the seed

  180. that fell among the rocky soil

  181. that just died off

  182. when the persecution came.

  183. No, their roots have gone deep

  184. and they've persevered.

  185. Admirable strength.

  186. And they have admirable minds.

  187. They knew what was right and wrong.

  188. Look at verse,

  189. verse two.

  190. But you have tested those

  191. who call themselves apostles

  192. and are not

  193. and found them to be false.

  194. They knew what was right and wrong.

  195. They courageously stood up

  196. to these false teachers.

  197. Admirable minds,

  198. admirable strength.

  199. And perhaps this could be said

  200. of Christ the King,

  201. Kenosha.

  202. You've endured through hard things.

  203. You've got bright minds.

  204. You're able to decipher

  205. what's good and bad.

  206. But

  207. I was noticing

  208. that the description of

  209. Jesus in chapter one,

  210. his eyes were like

  211. a flame of fire.

  212. I.e.

  213. his eyes could see,

  214. bring light

  215. to dark places.

  216. He could see

  217. what was really going on.

  218. On the surface,

  219. you go,

  220. wow,

  221. great church.

  222. But something else

  223. is being

  224. unveiled.

  225. Verse four.

  226. But I have this against you

  227. that you have abandoned

  228. the love

  229. you had

  230. at first.

  231. So,

  232. admirable minds,

  233. admirable strength,

  234. but absent hearts.

  235. And what's

  236. really remarkable

  237. is this is

  238. Ephesus.

  239. If you know your Bibles,

  240. this is where

  241. Timothy was a pastor.

  242. Paul wrote a letter

  243. to the church

  244. in Ephesus.

  245. But that

  246. motivation

  247. out of a genuine

  248. affection for God

  249. were

  250. drained away.

  251. It was becoming

  252. mechanical.

  253. They knew the right

  254. things to do.

  255. They knew the right

  256. things to say

  257. and do,

  258. but

  259. they

  260. no longer

  261. delighted

  262. in God.

  263. Perhaps when they

  264. first fell in love

  265. with God,

  266. they loved to

  267. walk with Him

  268. and talk with Him.

  269. They loved to sing

  270. and their hearts

  271. were overflowing.

  272. They loved to tell

  273. people about Jesus

  274. out of that overflow.

  275. But now,

  276. it was just

  277. duty.

  278. It was good

  279. duty,

  280. great duty,

  281. but it was

  282. just

  283. duty.

  284. And this

  285. doesn't speak

  286. of specifically

  287. you've abandoned

  288. the love

  289. at first.

  290. It doesn't say

  291. love toward God

  292. or love towards

  293. others,

  294. so it's probably

  295. a bit ambiguous

  296. as it's both.

  297. So when at first

  298. their love

  299. for one another

  300. was sacrificial

  301. and long-suffering

  302. now is just

  303. they just kind of

  304. put up with people.

  305. They just loved

  306. the people that

  307. were easy to love,

  308. not the ways

  309. that was sacrificial

  310. and loving.

  311. So let's just

  312. stop here

  313. and reflect.

  314. Think about

  315. a married couple.

  316. Imagine a couple

  317. that the husband

  318. is madly

  319. in love

  320. with his wife,

  321. but over time

  322. the wife's

  323. love

  324. just starts

  325. to grow

  326. cold.

  327. Nothing that

  328. the husband

  329. has been doing,

  330. it's just her,

  331. just her attention

  332. as other places

  333. get involved

  334. in hobbies

  335. and activities,

  336. a side job,

  337. the kids,

  338. the friends,

  339. and her heart

  340. just drifts

  341. ever so slowly

  342. away over time.

  343. She's still faithful

  344. to her husband,

  345. still fulfills

  346. her responsibilities

  347. at home,

  348. but she doesn't

  349. delight in him.

  350. So a while back,

  351. Jessica,

  352. my wife,

  353. and I

  354. were on a walk

  355. and

  356. we were holding

  357. hands

  358. and a couple

  359. older folks

  360. were coming

  361. the other direction

  362. and I still

  363. remember

  364. one of them

  365. mentioning,

  366. oh,

  367. it's great to see

  368. young people

  369. holding hands

  370. and I was like,

  371. well,

  372. of course I'm

  373. going to hold

  374. my wife's hand,

  375. but it was just

  376. an image

  377. that caught me.

  378. you know,

  379. I still remember

  380. my father

  381. who's passed away

  382. eight years ago

  383. or so,

  384. his big hands

  385. and my mom's

  386. very slender hands

  387. and all the way

  388. up till his,

  389. he could no longer

  390. walk,

  391. they'd be walking

  392. through the halls

  393. of the retirement

  394. center,

  395. and he'd have

  396. his big hands

  397. on her hands,

  398. like that affection.

  399. And so I just,

  400. as an image for you,

  401. are you holding

  402. God's hand

  403. or are you just

  404. kind of marching

  405. and getting things

  406. done and knowing

  407. this is the right

  408. direction to go

  409. or are you actually

  410. holding his hand

  411. in affection?

  412. Because if you're

  413. holding his hand,

  414. you'll go the right

  415. direction and you'll

  416. have endurance.

  417. Are we holding

  418. his hand?

  419. But this is no

  420. small matter.

  421. Look,

  422. look at verse 4

  423. again,

  424. but I have this

  425. against you

  426. that you have

  427. abandoned the

  428. love you had

  429. at first.

  430. Remember,

  431. therefore,

  432. from where

  433. you have fallen.

  434. Repent

  435. and do the

  436. things you did

  437. at first.

  438. If not,

  439. I will come

  440. to you

  441. and remove

  442. your lampstand

  443. from its place

  444. unless you repent.

  445. Wow.

  446. Lampstand

  447. referring to

  448. the church

  449. where God's

  450. spirit is working

  451. and he would

  452. just move

  453. away.

  454. I don't know

  455. how immediate,

  456. maybe over

  457. decades or

  458. something,

  459. but the life,

  460. God's life

  461. in the church

  462. would ebb away.

  463. He would

  464. leave it.

  465. So it's a warning,

  466. a warning to love.

  467. Well,

  468. what if you feel

  469. like your love

  470. has grown cold?

  471. Well,

  472. this is what he

  473. says,

  474. the Ephesians

  475. kind of the three R's,

  476. just briefly there,

  477. verse 5,

  478. remember,

  479. therefore,

  480. from when you're

  481. fallen,

  482. so remember,

  483. what was that

  484. when I was

  485. on fire for

  486. Jesus,

  487. what did that

  488. look like?

  489. Again,

  490. I walked with

  491. him,

  492. I was talking

  493. to him,

  494. I was singing,

  495. I was telling,

  496. what was that

  497. like?

  498. So I remember,

  499. second R,

  500. repent,

  501. right,

  502. middle of verse

  503. 5,

  504. repent,

  505. just a humble

  506. recognition,

  507. yeah,

  508. this is how

  509. it is.

  510. My affection

  511. has grown

  512. cold,

  513. and so don't

  514. be dismissive,

  515. don't think

  516. about somebody

  517. on the other

  518. pew there,

  519. it's,

  520. it's,

  521. I need

  522. this,

  523. and then

  524. return,

  525. and do the

  526. works you did

  527. at first.

  528. But I'm

  529. really glad,

  530. unfortunately,

  531. we read

  532. this,

  533. and that's

  534. all we

  535. read.

  536. I'm so

  537. glad that's

  538. not it.

  539. That this

  540. message,

  541. the Ephesians,

  542. was put

  543. in another

  544. context.

  545. And so

  546. let's back

  547. up here

  548. with the

  549. telescope,

  550. and look

  551. at what

  552. the Ephesians

  553. would have

  554. read in

  555. addition to

  556. this message.

  557. again,

  558. these seven

  559. books,

  560. and there's

  561. a similarity

  562. between the

  563. first message

  564. and the

  565. last one.

  566. Look at the

  567. last one,

  568. chapter 3,

  569. verse 14.

  570. they would be

  571. reading this

  572. after they

  573. read about

  574. their own

  575. situation,

  576. and perhaps

  577. they're feeling

  578. like,

  579. oh boy,

  580. love is not

  581. like a,

  582. affection is not

  583. like a switch

  584. you flip,

  585. you know,

  586. just turn the

  587. lights on,

  588. and I have

  589. this affection

  590. for God.

  591. what's a

  592. good thing

  593. they keep

  594. on reading.

  595. And they

  596. run across

  597. the church

  598. of Laodicea

  599. in a very

  600. similar situation

  601. in which

  602. love has

  603. grown cool.

  604. Chapter 3,

  605. verse 14,

  606. and the

  607. angel of the

  608. church in

  609. Laodicea

  610. write the

  611. words of

  612. the amen,

  613. the faithful

  614. and the

  615. true witness,

  616. the beginning

  617. of God's

  618. creation.

  619. I know

  620. your works.

  621. You are

  622. neither cold

  623. nor hot.

  624. They've

  625. lost the

  626. warmth of

  627. their affection

  628. for God.

  629. Would that

  630. you were

  631. either cold

  632. or hot.

  633. So because

  634. you are

  635. lukewarm

  636. and neither

  637. hot nor

  638. cold,

  639. I will spit

  640. you out

  641. of my

  642. mouth.

  643. Consequence

  644. again,

  645. quite dramatic.

  646. For you

  647. say,

  648. this is,

  649. you say,

  650. I am rich,

  651. I have

  652. prospered,

  653. and I

  654. need

  655. nothing.

  656. Too often

  657. we see

  658. the things

  659. going well

  660. and we

  661. think,

  662. well,

  663. we've

  664. arrived

  665. as a

  666. church.

  667. not

  668. realizing

  669. that you

  670. are

  671. wretched,

  672. pitiful,

  673. poor,

  674. blind,

  675. and naked.

  676. I

  677. counsel

  678. you

  679. to buy

  680. from me

  681. gold.

  682. That is,

  683. come to

  684. another

  685. market,

  686. as it

  687. were,

  688. which we

  689. find all

  690. these things

  691. are free

  692. in this

  693. market.

  694. Come to

  695. Jesus and

  696. you'll find

  697. gold,

  698. gold refined

  699. by fire,

  700. so you may

  701. be rich in

  702. white garments,

  703. so you may

  704. be clothed

  705. yourself,

  706. and the

  707. shame of

  708. your

  709. nakedness

  710. may not

  711. be seen

  712. and salved

  713. to anoint

  714. your eyes

  715. so that

  716. you may

  717. see.

  718. Everything

  719. is at

  720. the

  721. Jesus

  722. market.

  723. And notice

  724. verse 19

  725. though,

  726. very,

  727. very

  728. interesting.

  729. Those

  730. whom

  731. I

  732. love,

  733. I

  734. reprove

  735. and

  736. discipline,

  737. so be

  738. zealous

  739. and repent.

  740. Very

  741. interesting.

  742. The

  743. seven,

  744. that's

  745. this

  746. chiastic

  747. structure,

  748. you see

  749. the very

  750. first one,

  751. they're

  752. lacking

  753. love.

  754. And the

  755. last one,

  756. the emphasis

  757. is on

  758. God's

  759. love

  760. for his

  761. people.

  762. And look

  763. at this

  764. beautiful

  765. image

  766. of Jesus'

  767. love

  768. for his

  769. church,

  770. a church

  771. that has

  772. grown cold

  773. in its

  774. love or

  775. cruel in

  776. its love.

  777. Verse 19,

  778. those whom

  779. I love,

  780. I reprove

  781. discipline,

  782. so be

  783. zealous

  784. and repent.

  785. Behold,

  786. verse 20,

  787. beautiful image

  788. here.

  789. Behold,

  790. I stand

  791. at the

  792. door and

  793. knock.

  794. If anyone

  795. hears my

  796. voice and

  797. opens the

  798. door, I

  799. will come

  800. into him

  801. and eat

  802. with him

  803. and he

  804. with me.

  805. It's

  806. such a

  807. beautiful

  808. image.

  809. And this

  810. is for

  811. Christians.

  812. This is

  813. for a

  814. church.

  815. This is

  816. not for

  817. non-Christians

  818. to get

  819. introduced

  820. to Jesus.

  821. This is

  822. for the

  823. church to

  824. be

  825. reintroduced

  826. to Jesus

  827. and he's

  828. offering

  829. himself

  830. to the

  831. church.

  832. He's

  833. ready to

  834. come in.

  835. What do

  836. you do

  837. to grow

  838. in your

  839. affection

  840. for Jesus?

  841. Do you

  842. kind of

  843. work up

  844. this energy

  845. and this

  846. to love

  847. Jesus more?

  848. You just

  849. open the

  850. door.

  851. You have

  852. him come

  853. in.

  854. he wants

  855. to be

  856. with you.

  857. He's

  858. the one

  859. taking

  860. the

  861. initiative.

  862. And it's

  863. this image

  864. of fellowship.

  865. Come in

  866. and eat

  867. with him

  868. and he

  869. with me.

  870. So this

  871. idea,

  872. sitting

  873. around a

  874. table,

  875. being with

  876. him,

  877. enjoying

  878. his

  879. company.

  880. every

  881. day,

  882. we say,

  883. I need

  884. you.

  885. Come

  886. in.

  887. I want

  888. you.

  889. I want

  890. more of

  891. you.

  892. So if

  893. you look

  894. at the

  895. church in

  896. Ephesus,

  897. if you just

  898. looked at the

  899. message of

  900. them,

  901. there's this

  902. warning.

  903. They're to

  904. repent of

  905. this lack

  906. of affection.

  907. But as you

  908. open the

  909. telescope a

  910. little bit,

  911. as they've

  912. continued to

  913. read,

  914. they learn

  915. about this

  916. generosity

  917. of this

  918. Jesus that

  919. keeps on

  920. knocking.

  921. This is not

  922. the first time

  923. he's come,

  924. but he keeps

  925. on knocking.

  926. He wants

  927. to have

  928. fellowship and

  929. friendship with

  930. them.

  931. And so

  932. they've,

  933. that's the

  934. second,

  935. they've

  936. read the

  937. other mail

  938. because that's

  939. purposely here

  940. for them.

  941. But there's

  942. yet one

  943. more.

  944. Because

  945. these letters

  946. don't end

  947. there.

  948. This,

  949. this whole

  950. letter,

  951. including the

  952. what's to

  953. the Ephesians,

  954. continues for

  955. the rest of

  956. the book.

  957. So here's the

  958. question.

  959. This is why

  960. you need to

  961. read the

  962. book of

  963. Revelation

  964. seven times

  965. in each of

  966. those churches

  967. seats,

  968. as it were.

  969. what did

  970. the church

  971. in Ephesus

  972. need from

  973. the rest

  974. of the

  975. book?

  976. Because often

  977. we think,

  978. well,

  979. what the

  980. churches

  981. needed at

  982. that time

  983. with all

  984. the persecution

  985. and hardship,

  986. and some of

  987. these churches,

  988. they were

  989. suffering,

  990. and what they

  991. needed to hear

  992. from Jesus

  993. was endure.

  994. Don't be

  995. afraid.

  996. And so as

  997. they would

  998. read the

  999. book of

  1000. Revelation,

  1001. they'd learn

  1002. about this

  1003. conquering

  1004. king that

  1005. they could

  1006. depend on

  1007. to bring

  1008. full redemption

  1009. to them.

  1010. Yes,

  1011. that's what

  1012. they needed

  1013. to hear.

  1014. But what

  1015. did the

  1016. church in

  1017. Ephesus

  1018. need?

  1019. They needed

  1020. their hearts

  1021. rekindled.

  1022. So for

  1023. them,

  1024. that's what

  1025. the rest

  1026. of the

  1027. book of

  1028. Revelation

  1029. was for,

  1030. was to

  1031. rekindle

  1032. their delight

  1033. in God,

  1034. to stir

  1035. their affections

  1036. afresh.

  1037. And so what

  1038. I encourage

  1039. you to do

  1040. is read

  1041. the book

  1042. of Revelation

  1043. with that

  1044. lens on,

  1045. Jesus,

  1046. I want to

  1047. fall in

  1048. love with

  1049. you again.

  1050. And see

  1051. what the

  1052. book of

  1053. Revelation

  1054. does for

  1055. your heart.

  1056. Let me

  1057. just give you

  1058. a number of

  1059. the images

  1060. that you run

  1061. across the

  1062. book of

  1063. Revelation

  1064. that I

  1065. found just

  1066. wow.

  1067. In certain

  1068. seasons,

  1069. I need

  1070. these images.

  1071. Obviously,

  1072. last week,

  1073. it was the

  1074. lamb on

  1075. the throne.

  1076. And you

  1077. just meditate

  1078. on, oh,

  1079. my goodness,

  1080. he's this

  1081. symbol of

  1082. weakness

  1083. that conquers

  1084. and when

  1085. we feel

  1086. weak,

  1087. we're strong

  1088. when we're

  1089. in Jesus

  1090. and depending

  1091. on him,

  1092. his power

  1093. is made

  1094. perfect in

  1095. weakness.

  1096. Incredible

  1097. image you

  1098. meditate on.

  1099. One of the

  1100. images I

  1101. mentioned last

  1102. week also

  1103. is this

  1104. spring of

  1105. water,

  1106. repeatedly

  1107. in this

  1108. book,

  1109. to the

  1110. thirsty

  1111. I will

  1112. give from

  1113. the spring

  1114. of the

  1115. water of

  1116. life without

  1117. payment.

  1118. it's a

  1119. beautiful

  1120. image I

  1121. can come

  1122. to Jesus

  1123. with as

  1124. by

  1125. greatest

  1126. thirst and

  1127. hunger.

  1128. I don't

  1129. have to

  1130. bring

  1131. anything.

  1132. I just

  1133. come with

  1134. my neediness

  1135. and my

  1136. lack and

  1137. he is

  1138. there with

  1139. eternal

  1140. living

  1141. water.

  1142. Wow.

  1143. And it's

  1144. described in

  1145. Revelation 22

  1146. as a river

  1147. plentiful

  1148. righteous

  1149. the water

  1150. of life.

  1151. So maybe

  1152. you need

  1153. that

  1154. encouragement.

  1155. Or maybe

  1156. you're just

  1157. feeling a

  1158. lack of

  1159. you're feeling

  1160. alone

  1161. and then

  1162. you run

  1163. across this

  1164. image of

  1165. this wedding

  1166. feast and

  1167. the Lamb's

  1168. delight in

  1169. his bride.

  1170. In this

  1171. wedding feast

  1172. that's just

  1173. overflowing

  1174. and he's

  1175. building a

  1176. home for

  1177. his bride.

  1178. And so

  1179. perhaps you

  1180. are also

  1181. feeling a

  1182. sense of

  1183. insecurity

  1184. and you

  1185. learn about

  1186. this city

  1187. he's building

  1188. which is

  1189. perfectly

  1190. secure.

  1191. Safe.

  1192. Oh and

  1193. along the

  1194. way you

  1195. read all

  1196. these songs

  1197. that can

  1198. stir our

  1199. hearts in

  1200. affection for

  1201. this king.

  1202. Oh also

  1203. to those

  1204. of you

  1205. who are

  1206. in the

  1207. midst of

  1208. struggling

  1209. through

  1210. being

  1211. taken

  1212. advantage

  1213. of.

  1214. There's

  1215. injustice.

  1216. You're

  1217. angry at

  1218. how you've

  1219. been treated.

  1220. Oh

  1221. Revelation

  1222. is a good

  1223. book for

  1224. you.

  1225. There's a

  1226. rider on

  1227. a white

  1228. horse.

  1229. There will

  1230. be justice

  1231. and as we

  1232. sang earlier

  1233. on

  1234. everything

  1235. will be

  1236. made

  1237. right.

  1238. everything.

  1239. It's a

  1240. bloody

  1241. book.

  1242. And for

  1243. those who

  1244. have faced

  1245. injustice

  1246. it's good

  1247. news.

  1248. And so

  1249. what we

  1250. find is

  1251. this book

  1252. is a

  1253. feast.

  1254. So do

  1255. you see

  1256. what's

  1257. happened

  1258. as we

  1259. have

  1260. opened up

  1261. the

  1262. telescope

  1263. if you

  1264. were in

  1265. Ephesus

  1266. you've

  1267. read the

  1268. letter to

  1269. yourself

  1270. and you've

  1271. had a

  1272. warning.

  1273. You open

  1274. the telescope

  1275. a little

  1276. more and

  1277. you have

  1278. this

  1279. invitation

  1280. of this

  1281. king

  1282. and wants

  1283. to sit

  1284. with you

  1285. and you

  1286. open it

  1287. even further

  1288. and there

  1289. is a

  1290. feast.

  1291. Jesus

  1292. is the

  1293. feast for

  1294. you.

  1295. And he

  1296. comes in

  1297. so many

  1298. different

  1299. images

  1300. to satisfy

  1301. your needs

  1302. and that

  1303. you might

  1304. follow him

  1305. and worship

  1306. him for

  1307. all that

  1308. he is

  1309. for us.

  1310. And so

  1311. think of

  1312. this stunning

  1313. generosity

  1314. of this

  1315. feast.

  1316. Talking to

  1317. Jessica

  1318. as we

  1319. were

  1320. driving

  1321. up here

  1322. I don't

  1323. know if

  1324. you've

  1325. seen the

  1326. websites

  1327. where you

  1328. can zoom

  1329. really far

  1330. in like

  1331. to an

  1332. atom or

  1333. smaller and

  1334. then zoom

  1335. way out

  1336. and you can

  1337. see the

  1338. galaxies.

  1339. It's just a

  1340. website that

  1341. helps you see

  1342. the big

  1343. and the small.

  1344. That's what I

  1345. encourage you

  1346. as you come to

  1347. the book of

  1348. Revelation.

  1349. Think of that

  1350. image.

  1351. You come to

  1352. these images

  1353. and you

  1354. kind of peel

  1355. back the

  1356. layers like

  1357. that onion

  1358. or you

  1359. back up

  1360. and you

  1361. see all

  1362. these

  1363. incredible

  1364. images

  1365. and may

  1366. it be a

  1367. stunning

  1368. generously

  1369. stunning

  1370. feast

  1371. for your

  1372. souls.

  1373. Let's pray.

  1374. Father, I

  1375. just want to

  1376. give another

  1377. moment of

  1378. quiet for

  1379. my brothers

  1380. and sisters

  1381. here and

  1382. that they

  1383. would just

  1384. take this

  1385. moment and

  1386. what images

  1387. perhaps that

  1388. have already

  1389. been mentioned

  1390. do you want

  1391. to feast

  1392. upon for

  1393. this coming

  1394. week?

  1395. What is it

  1396. about Jesus

  1397. that you want

  1398. to grow in

  1399. your awe

  1400. and your

  1401. delight in?

  1402. Take a

  1403. moment and

  1404. do that.

  1405. And Father,

  1406. as we see

  1407. so often

  1408. in the book

  1409. of Revelation,

  1410. your people

  1411. turn to

  1412. sing.

  1413. We have

  1414. so much

  1415. to sing

  1416. about.

  1417. You

  1418. bring

  1419. so many

  1420. lavish

  1421. blessings

  1422. even though

  1423. we don't

  1424. deserve it.

  1425. We come

  1426. empty handed.

  1427. You are

  1428. so,

  1429. so generous

  1430. to us.

  1431. As

  1432. we prayed

  1433. last week,

  1434. tune our

  1435. hearts

  1436. souls

  1437. to sing

  1438. your

  1439. grace.

  1440. Streams

  1441. of mercy

  1442. never

  1443. ceasing

  1444. call for

  1445. songs

  1446. of

  1447. loudest

  1448. praise.

  1449. Pray this

  1450. in Jesus'

  1451. name.

  1452. Amen.

  1453. Amen.

  1454. Thank you.
