  1. Amen.

  2. Amen.

  3. You may be seated, kids.

  4. You are excused to your King's Kids class.

  5. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely.

  6. And let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  7. who, for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  8. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted, so that you wouldn't give up.

  9. May God bless the hearing of his word.

  10. Distracted drivers are dangerous.

  11. A danger to themselves and a danger to others.

  12. A distracted driver is someone who takes their eyes off the road and fixes their eyes on something else.

  13. Maybe it's their phone.

  14. Maybe it's their companion next to them.

  15. Maybe it's a French fry that has fallen to the floor.

  16. Maybe it's an accident on the other side of the road.

  17. You're part of the gaper's delay.

  18. Maybe it's a good thought.

  19. Distracted drivers are a danger to themselves and others, and they need to fix their eyes on the road.

  20. Distracted Christians are also a danger.

  21. Danger to themselves and a danger to others.

  22. There are a variety of things that can distract Christians from Christ,

  23. and one of which that we are hearing again and again in the book of Hebrews

  24. is suffering on account of Christ.

  25. Being marginalized for Jesus.

  26. That can cause you to become weary and faint hearted.

  27. Want to give up.

  28. When you get distracted from Christ, you tend to drift from Christ.

  29. And in some cases, you can actually fall away from Christ.

  30. Where there was no faith to begin with.

  31. It's a disaster.

  32. In Hebrews chapter 12, the author likens the Christian faith to an endurance race.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  33. To a marathon.

  34. In order for you, Christian, to finish the race and to finish strong, you need endurance.

  35. Don't give up.

  36. You need to endure.

  37. And in Hebrews 12, 1 through 3, we're shown how to finish the race and finish strong in four ways.

  38. First is run the legacy.

  39. Second, run light.

  40. Third, run long.

  41. Fourth, run looking.

  42. Those last three I heard in a sermon about 30 years ago.

  43. Stuck with me ever since.

  44. So, four points this morning.

  45. Run the legacy.

  46. Run light.

  47. Run long.

  48. Run looking.

  49. Do you want to finish the race?

  50. And finish strong?

  51. Eyes on Jesus.

  52. So, let's look at this first point.

  53. We'll see it in Hebrews 12, 1.

  54. Run the legacy.

  55. We read, therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.

  56. The cloud of witnesses that the author of Hebrews is talking about here are all of those 20 plus saints of old.

  57. Those people of old commended by God for their faith that we were looking at last week in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  58. They are the cloud of witnesses.

  59. They're the ones commended by God for their faith.

  60. They finished the race that God had set before him.

  61. They endured by trusting God and his promises.

  62. It's a cloud of witnesses.

  63. The original word for witness is the word martyr.

  64. That's where you get the word martyr from.

  65. And when we think of martyr, we think of people who give up their lives out of believing in Jesus and proclaiming him.

  66. And so, what we're getting at here are these, this cloud of witnesses are those who bore witness to God to their last breath.

  67. That they believe in him and they believe in his promises.

  68. They were faithful all the way to the end.

  69. So, what's happening here in Hebrews 12, 1.

  70. Is that the author is making a connection between old covenant saints and new covenant saints.

  71. Those commended by God.

  72. We're being linked to Abel and Enoch and Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Daniel, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah.

  73. All of these commended by God for their faith who've gone before us.

  74. We're being connected to them.

  75. Linked to them.

  76. They're the heroes of the faith.

  77. The who's who of the faith.

  78. Faith.

  79. And they have left for us a legacy of faith.

  80. A legacy is something that those who've gone before us entrust us with.

  81. And what the kind of the heroes of the faith of chapter 11 have entrusted to us is an example of endurance by faith.

  82. In chapter 11, verse 40.

  83. We learn that apart from us, these Old Testament saints will not be made perfect.

  84. Their salvation as ours was found in Christ alone.

  85. Theirs by faith in what Christ would do.

  86. And ours by faith alone in what Christ has done.

  87. We are all united by faith.

  88. We read here that we are surrounded by this great cloud.

  89. It's a very interesting picture.

  90. The Ethiopian Tamaral Tola won the 2024 Olympic marathon with a time of two hours and six minutes.

  91. Pretty quick.

  92. If you saw it, you would see that the last 100 yards of the race, it led into this massive throng.

  93. A cloud of spectators.

  94. And they were cheering him on.

  95. And he ran that last 200 yards to the end.

  96. It was like a stadium filled with people rooting him on.

  97. In chapter 12, verse 1, the author is picturing our holding fast to Christ as a marathon.

  98. And we're being surrounded by those who've endured to the end.

  99. They've gone before us and they wait for us in the heavenly city of God.

  100. They're the ones who we've been linked to.

  101. They're the ones who surround us.

  102. They're the ones who are the legacy entrusted to us.

  103. Run the legacy.

  104. Here's two ways this makes a difference.

  105. First is this.

  106. In our day and age, there's a lot of pressure to signal your tribe.

  107. Whether it's politically, progressive or conservative.

  108. Whether it's theologically.

  109. Whether it's ethnically.

  110. What's going on here is, brothers and sisters, we've got a tribe.

  111. A tribe of faith.

  112. We're to identify with them.

  113. We're to check the box that we are in this group.

  114. Have you ever filled out a government form where it asks for your ethnic heritage, whether you're Caucasian or you're black or you're Hispanic or you're Asian?

  115. Just imagine another box.

  116. By faith.

  117. By faith.

  118. Check.

  119. This is who we identify with.

  120. This is our tribe.

  121. Tribe of faith.

  122. Second thing this thing does is it locates us in God's story.

  123. God has always had a gracious and glorious plan for the fullness of time to gather a people for himself from every tribe, tongue and nation in Christ.

  124. And we're part of the story.

  125. We're part of the unfolding story of God's plan.

  126. We are numbered with this multitude.

  127. We are to be part of this great cloud of witnesses unto God's grace and unto his glory.

  128. This is the fulfillment of the promise he made to Abraham to bless all the nations of the world through his offspring whom we know is Jesus Christ.

  129. Run the legacy.

  130. You want to finish this race?

  131. You want to finish strong?

  132. Run the legacy.

  133. The legacy of faith.

  134. The second point in how to finish strong is you run light.

  135. We read in verse 1,

  136. Let us also lay aside every weight and the sin which clings so closely.

  137. The New International Version of the Bible says,

  138. Let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles.

  139. Have you ever noticed a marathon runner what they wear?

  140. When they're running the race, they don't wear much.

  141. They usually wear like really short shorts.

  142. Who wears short shorts?

  143. And then they have a tank top.

  144. And that's all that they're wearing.

  145. On cold days, they usually put on a stocking hat and have gloves on, but that's it.

  146. They're running light.

  147. In fact, the Greco-Roman Olympics, which began in 776 BC,

  148. they wore no clothing at all.

  149. Which would boost the Olympic kind of viewership if they did that today.

  150. But the point is,

  151. competitors run light.

  152. They compete light to minimize hindrances to the running the race.

  153. They lay things aside that would distract them or hinder them.

  154. Think about it this way.

  155. If it is not helping you run the race for Jesus,

  156. it's probably hindering you from running the race for Jesus.

  157. And the author points to two different types of hindrances in this passage.

  158. The first is every weight.

  159. Let us also lay aside every weight.

  160. A marathon runner may show up to the race in a full-blown body warm-up suit,

  161. but when it's race time, he or she will take off that warm-up suit and lay it aside

  162. because they want to run the race and run it strong.

  163. They don't want anything hindering them from running as strong and as best as they can run.

  164. There are things that aren't in and of themselves sinful

  165. that become hindrances to us running the race.

  166. Let me give you some examples.

  167. Would you say that sleep is bad or good?

  168. It's good.

  169. But if your sleep habits are resulting in your neglecting your pursuit of Christ,

  170. you've got a hindrance.

  171. You've got to lay that aside.

  172. It's not helping you pursue Jesus.

  173. It's hindering you.

  174. It's keeping you from reading the Bible, from praying unto God.

  175. Another example would be work.

  176. Is work good or bad?

  177. The Bible is very clear.

  178. Work is good.

  179. But if you are working so much that it's resulting in you neglecting,

  180. tending to your soul,

  181. it's something out of proportion there.

  182. You need to rein something in.

  183. In our culture, one of the things that people deal with on a regular basis

  184. is busyness as a family.

  185. We have families who are trying to do it all,

  186. to have all of their kids involved in as much as possible,

  187. whether it's athletics or whether it's performance arts

  188. or even serving at the church.

  189. You're trying to do it all.

  190. But over time, it is thinning you out.

  191. Busyness.

  192. Is it good to give yourself to important good things?

  193. Yes, of course it is.

  194. But you can only do a few things really well.

  195. Do you remember back in Luke 10?

  196. Mary and Martha.

  197. Martha was a busy body.

  198. She was getting everything ready because Jesus was there.

  199. And she's like,

  200. Jesus, would you please tell Mary to help me?

  201. Because Mary was sitting at his feet.

  202. And Jesus says,

  203. Mary has chosen the better.

  204. There are first things, brothers and sisters.

  205. When we're thinking about weights to lay aside,

  206. here's the question to be asking.

  207. Is this good thing helping or hindering me run the race?

  208. You might need to cut something out completely

  209. or just simply rein something in a little bit.

  210. Something's gotten away from you.

  211. The second hindrance is outright sin.

  212. And the sin which clings so closely

  213. or the sin which so easily entangles.

  214. Sin is any thought, feeling, word, or action

  215. that contradicts God's character or His command.

  216. It is always by nature wrong, evil,

  217. grievous in God's sight.

  218. And we are to lay it aside.

  219. We're to put it off.

  220. The picture here is not of someone

  221. who is being necessarily hindered by something

  222. but being tripped up by something.

  223. Do you guys know what shackles are?

  224. Shackles are like these steel cuffs

  225. that will go around your wrists

  226. and there's this chain in between

  227. that really limits you.

  228. They're also leg irons,

  229. leg shackles that go cuffs on your ankles

  230. and there's this chain in between you.

  231. Could you imagine if Tamaral Tola,

  232. the 2024 Olympic champion,

  233. he came up to the marathon line,

  234. the starting line,

  235. with shackles on his legs?

  236. Do you think he would finish?

  237. Do you think he would run strong?

  238. No.

  239. He would need to remove the shackles

  240. to lay them aside.

  241. There are some sinful shackles pointed to

  242. in Hebrews 12.

  243. Let me point them out to you.

  244. Later on in verse 15,

  245. we read,

  246. See to it that no one fails

  247. to obtain the grace of God,

  248. that no root of bitterness

  249. springs up and causes trouble,

  250. and by it many become defiled.

  251. Bitterness is a shackle on a Christian.

  252. And it's dangerous for them

  253. and it's dangerous for those around them.

  254. It defiles people.

  255. Bitterness is holding a grudge.

  256. It is a hardness of heart.

  257. It is resentment.

  258. It's blaming someone

  259. for something that has happened

  260. and it's this hatred.

  261. It's hatred.

  262. It's unloving.

  263. It defiles the people.

  264. And it runs in the opposite direction

  265. of verse 14.

  266. Strive for peace with everyone.

  267. You are to lay it aside.

  268. You are to put bitterness off.

  269. You are to repent of that.

  270. There's another shackle.

  271. It's in verse 16.

  272. That no one is sexually immoral

  273. or unholy like Esau

  274. who sold his birthright

  275. for a single meal.

  276. Sexual immorality is sexual sin.

  277. Whether it's adultery,

  278. when you have a spouse

  279. who's been sexually unfaithful

  280. or fornication,

  281. when you have two unmarried people

  282. being sexually unfaithful to God.

  283. Pornography is this visualized sexual sin

  284. and it is wickedly wrong.

  285. What makes this so grievous in God's sight

  286. is it runs against the grain

  287. of his good design of marriage.

  288. This sexuality that he has given us as a gift

  289. is to be enjoyed

  290. in the context of marriage alone.

  291. And when we seek to experience

  292. and enjoy sexuality

  293. outside of the good confines of marriage,

  294. it's grievous in God's sight.

  295. These are shackles.

  296. These will hold you back

  297. from running the race

  298. and it will affect other people.

  299. And then of course,

  300. there's unbelief.

  301. If you,

  302. Amy actually referenced this

  303. when she was praying moments ago.

  304. In Hebrews 3, 12 and 13,

  305. we read this.

  306. Take care, brothers,

  307. lest there be in any of you

  308. an evil, unbelieving heart

  309. leading you to fall away

  310. from the living God.

  311. But exhort one another every day

  312. as long as it's called today

  313. that none of you may be hardened

  314. by the deceitfulness of sin.

  315. Unbelief is a denying of who God is

  316. and what he's done.

  317. And you're to put that off.

  318. That will shackle you.

  319. So here we have shackles

  320. that will immobilize you

  321. as you seek to run for Christ.

  322. You gotta put them off.

  323. I've been praying

  324. that God would put his finger

  325. on something in our lives.

  326. Has God been putting something,

  327. his finger on something

  328. in your life?

  329. Some weight

  330. that you need to lay aside,

  331. some sin that you need to repent of?

  332. That's his loving kindness to you.

  333. He wants you to share

  334. in his holiness.

  335. And he wants you to run the race.

  336. He wants you to finish the race

  337. and finish strong.

  338. So receive that

  339. and turn from these things.

  340. Lay them aside.

  341. When we run,

  342. we run the legacy,

  343. we run light,

  344. and the third point

  345. is that we run long.

  346. In 12.1 we read,

  347. and let us run with endurance

  348. the race that is set before us.

  349. Eugene Peterson,

  350. a title to his book,

  351. helps with a definition.

  352. Endurance is a long obedience

  353. in the same direction.

  354. Endurance is the ability

  355. to press on

  356. in the face of difficulty.

  357. Endurance is not giving up.

  358. It's not quitting.

  359. It's not falling away

  360. or folding like a cheap suit.

  361. Endurance is pressing on.

  362. It's getting back up

  363. and moving forward

  364. unto Christ.

  365. It's holding fast to Christ

  366. all the way to the end.

  367. Your very last breath.

  368. And if you're a Christian,

  369. and you're seeking

  370. to live by faith,

  371. it's just a matter of time

  372. before your faith,

  373. your life,

  374. will get challenged.

  375. Before you'll be marginalized.

  376. You will need to endure that.

  377. You'll need to press through that

  378. by faith.

  379. We got a baptism coming up

  380. in August,

  381. and we have a good group

  382. of people,

  383. like I mentioned,

  384. being baptized.

  385. It's down at Eichelman.

  386. It's highly public.

  387. And anyone who comes out

  388. in the water,

  389. I'm going to ask them

  390. two questions.

  391. First question is this.

  392. Have you put your faith

  393. in Jesus Christ alone

  394. for the forgiveness

  395. of your sin

  396. and the promise

  397. of eternal life?

  398. Yes.

  399. The second question

  400. is the endurance question.

  401. It's the finish

  402. the race question.

  403. It goes like this.

  404. Have you resolved

  405. to follow Jesus

  406. all the days of your life,

  407. no matter what happens?

  408. Are you going to finish

  409. the race?

  410. As far as it depends on you,

  411. trusting in the living God?

  412. Yes.

  413. We baptize him.

  414. Endurance.

  415. The opposite of endurance,

  416. of an enduring faith,

  417. an endurance by faith,

  418. is a falling away

  419. because of unbelief.

  420. faith.

  421. Remember,

  422. faith is like a muscle.

  423. And if your faith

  424. goes unused,

  425. it atrophies.

  426. But with use,

  427. your muscles,

  428. faith muscles,

  429. strengthen,

  430. and you are able

  431. to press through hard things

  432. by faith,

  433. trusting in God's character,

  434. trusting in his promise.

  435. It's by use.

  436. endurance.

  437. This is endurance.

  438. And we are to run

  439. with endurance

  440. the race that God

  441. has set before us.

  442. It's his paths

  443. that he's laid out

  444. before us.

  445. It's a path,

  446. a race for us to run.

  447. He's laid it out.

  448. He's laid it out

  449. according to his word.

  450. And we are to finish

  451. and to finish strong.

  452. God sets this race

  453. before us.

  454. It's a path of faith.

  455. Nowhere does he promise to us

  456. that this race

  457. is going to be easy

  458. and comfortable.

  459. Nowhere.

  460. In fact,

  461. if it's anything,

  462. he duly warns us

  463. Jesus said

  464. at the end of John 16,

  465. in the world,

  466. you will have tribulation.

  467. You will have difficulty

  468. on account of me.

  469. You know,

  470. we sing a song,

  471. Amazing Grace,

  472. Amazing Grace,

  473. and there's this line,

  474. through many dangers,

  475. toils, and snares,

  476. I have already come.

  477. Brothers and sisters,

  478. that's just normal.

  479. Through many dangers,

  480. toils, and snares,

  481. blessed be your name

  482. in a world

  483. that is marked by suffering.

  484. We just sang it.

  485. You'll be marginalized

  486. by being a follower of Jesus.

  487. Don't be surprised by it.

  488. Rejoice in it.

  489. Just like Paul and Silas

  490. rejoiced in the Philippian jail.

  491. Now,

  492. this is an endurance race.

  493. In September,

  494. I'm going to preach

  495. three sermons

  496. on Psalm 23.

  497. I can't wait.

  498. The Lord is my shepherd.

  499. I shall not want.

  500. He makes me

  501. lie down

  502. and greet pastures.

  503. He leads me

  504. beside still waters.

  505. He restores my soul.

  506. Verse 3.

  507. And then it says,

  508. He leads me

  509. in paths of righteousness

  510. for His name's sake.

  511. He's got a race

  512. set out for us.

  513. And then verse 4.

  514. Even though I walk

  515. through the valley

  516. of the shadow of death,

  517. the deep darks,

  518. I shall feel no evil

  519. for you are with me.

  520. Even David knew.

  521. Being a follower

  522. of God

  523. in the paths

  524. that God had set

  525. would lead through

  526. deep darks,

  527. hardship,

  528. difficulty,

  529. suffering on account

  530. of Jesus for us.

  531. He does not promise

  532. ease and comfort.

  533. Hardship and difficult

  534. will surely come.

  535. We must endure.

  536. Not giving up,

  537. not quitting,

  538. pressing on.

  539. You're going to have

  540. some hard decisions

  541. to make.

  542. What are you going

  543. to do

  544. when your

  545. gay nephew

  546. invites you

  547. to come to his

  548. gay wedding?

  549. What are you going

  550. to do?

  551. What does it look like

  552. to walk by faith

  553. there?

  554. Because in God's eyes,

  555. it's not a wedding.

  556. Students,

  557. what do you do

  558. when your classmates

  559. are cheating

  560. on their schoolwork?

  561. what do you do?

  562. What does it look like

  563. to walk by faith?

  564. It might mean

  565. getting marginalized,

  566. taking some heat.

  567. He doesn't promise

  568. ease and comfort

  569. to those who walk

  570. uprightly.

  571. But the thing is,

  572. we get to do this

  573. together.

  574. together.

  575. We run this race

  576. together.

  577. We're like a pack.

  578. Remember the chariots

  579. of fire,

  580. those guys

  581. and runners

  582. and white

  583. on the beach

  584. in England

  585. running

  586. together?

  587. If you look back

  588. at Hebrews 10,

  589. 24 and 25,

  590. I'm going to read

  591. this,

  592. but be thinking

  593. in terms of

  594. running the race.

  595. And let us

  596. consider how to

  597. stir up one another

  598. to love and good works,

  599. not neglecting

  600. to meet together

  601. as is the habit

  602. of some,

  603. but encouraging

  604. one another.

  605. And all the more

  606. as you see the day

  607. drawing near.

  608. As you're running

  609. the race together

  610. and gathering

  611. together every Sunday,

  612. be encouraging

  613. one another

  614. as you see

  615. that day

  616. approaching

  617. when Jesus

  618. comes back.

  619. our Sunday

  620. gathering

  621. is an encouraging

  622. gathering.

  623. It's encouragement.

  624. It is strength

  625. for your soul

  626. to press on.

  627. We do this

  628. together.

  629. Do you want to

  630. finish the race

  631. and finish strong?

  632. You need to run

  633. long

  634. with endurance.

  635. The race marked out

  636. and we do that

  637. together.

  638. One last point.

  639. We run looking.

  640. In verse 2,

  641. we read

  642. looking to Jesus.

  643. In verse 3,

  644. we read

  645. consider him,

  646. Jesus,

  647. who endured

  648. from sinners

  649. such hostility

  650. against himself

  651. so that you

  652. may not grow weary

  653. or faint hearted.

  654. You know,

  655. there's just a general

  656. principle in life.

  657. It goes something

  658. like this.

  659. You move

  660. in the direction

  661. to which you're looking.

  662. You move

  663. to where you're looking.

  664. Whether you're

  665. driving a car

  666. or riding a bike

  667. or running a marathon,

  668. if you look over

  669. your left shoulder,

  670. typically you're going

  671. to move a little left,

  672. right?

  673. Or if you look over

  674. your right shoulder,

  675. you're going to move

  676. a little right.

  677. The general principle

  678. is you move

  679. to where you're looking.

  680. Spiritually speaking,

  681. your looking

  682. aims your living.

  683. you live for

  684. what you're looking

  685. at.

  686. If you're fixing

  687. your eyes,

  688. scrolling,

  689. scrolling for new

  690. purchases,

  691. again and again

  692. and again,

  693. you make the purchase

  694. and you're scrolling

  695. for a new purchase,

  696. you're looking

  697. and your living

  698. follows.

  699. If you're fixated

  700. on something

  701. that's happened

  702. in your past

  703. and you're just

  704. looking and looking

  705. and looking at it,

  706. it's like trying

  707. to move forward,

  708. but you're just

  709. staring in the

  710. rearview mirror,

  711. you're going to be

  712. living in the past.

  713. If you're fixated

  714. on illicit images,

  715. you're setting

  716. your heart

  717. on these things.

  718. You're living

  719. for that

  720. which gives

  721. no life.

  722. They're broken,

  723. empty sin cisterns.

  724. There's no life

  725. in these things.

  726. we're told to lay

  727. these things aside.

  728. There's no life.

  729. They distract us

  730. from Christ.

  731. They're impostors.

  732. If you're a Christian,

  733. but not regularly

  734. looking to Jesus,

  735. and what I mean by that

  736. is this.

  737. Have you ever heard

  738. someone say,

  739. every one look

  740. at sin,

  741. you look ten looks

  742. at Jesus.

  743. every one look

  744. at this past wrong

  745. that you need

  746. to work through,

  747. you need to take

  748. ten at Jesus.

  749. It's that kind

  750. of looking.

  751. If you're not

  752. looking to Jesus,

  753. you're going to be

  754. looking at something

  755. else.

  756. There's dangers there.

  757. There's the danger

  758. of drift.

  759. That word looking,

  760. looking to Jesus,

  761. has a very interesting

  762. nuance to it.

  763. it means to purposefully

  764. stop looking at one thing

  765. and to start looking

  766. at another.

  767. To very intentionally,

  768. to consciously,

  769. purposefully,

  770. take your eyes off

  771. one thing

  772. and put your eyes

  773. on another.

  774. I've got a confession.

  775. Sometimes I come home

  776. from a hard day

  777. of pastoring.

  778. And I walk

  779. in the side door

  780. and I grab

  781. the mail

  782. and I walk

  783. into the kitchen

  784. and sometimes

  785. Jenny's there

  786. and we'll start

  787. talking about our day.

  788. But you know

  789. what I'm doing?

  790. I'm looking

  791. at the mail.

  792. Jenny's asking

  793. me about my day.

  794. Yeah,

  795. huh,

  796. huh.

  797. But I'm,

  798. I'm looking

  799. at an AARP

  800. letter.

  801. Do you know

  802. what I've got to do?

  803. I've got to lay it aside.

  804. And I need to fix

  805. my eyes on Jenny.

  806. And I need to be there.

  807. Does this make sense?

  808. I've got to take

  809. my eyes off one thing

  810. and put my eyes

  811. on another.

  812. In order for you

  813. to finish the race

  814. and finish strong,

  815. you need to learn

  816. and practice

  817. turning your eyes

  818. from lesser things

  819. in order to fix

  820. your eyes

  821. on the greatest

  822. treasure of all,

  823. Jesus.

  824. Eyes

  825. on

  826. Jesus.

  827. And in verses

  828. two and three,

  829. the author gives us

  830. some things about

  831. Jesus to look at.

  832. We've got a couple

  833. titles,

  834. a couple places,

  835. and one example.

  836. the two titles,

  837. essentially two titles

  838. are these.

  839. Looking to Jesus,

  840. the founder and

  841. perfecter of your faith.

  842. Maybe the founder

  843. and finisher

  844. of your faith.

  845. Two titles.

  846. The founder,

  847. the originator

  848. of the faith

  849. of our salvation.

  850. Jesus.

  851. The finisher,

  852. the perfecter,

  853. the completer

  854. of our salvation.

  855. Jesus,

  856. all of Christianity,

  857. begins and

  858. ends

  859. with Jesus.

  860. He is our

  861. everything.

  862. He is

  863. our salvation.

  864. If you're familiar

  865. with Revelation,

  866. in Revelation 22,

  867. 13,

  868. Jesus says this

  869. about himself,

  870. I am the alpha

  871. and the omega,

  872. the first and the last,

  873. the beginning

  874. and the end.

  875. And if you don't know

  876. the Greek alphabet,

  877. it starts with alpha

  878. and ends with omega.

  879. He's the beginning

  880. and the end.

  881. It's all about Jesus.

  882. Have you ever heard

  883. the song,

  884. He's got the whole world.

  885. We can adjust

  886. that a little bit

  887. to Jesus singing,

  888. saying of Jesus,

  889. He's got our whole

  890. salvation in His hands.

  891. He's the beginning

  892. and the end.

  893. These are two titles.

  894. Now let's look

  895. at the two places.

  896. Looking to Jesus,

  897. the founder and perfecter

  898. of our faith

  899. who for the joy

  900. that was set before Him

  901. endured the cross.

  902. Place number one,

  903. the place of His humiliation

  904. and our salvation.

  905. That place,

  906. the cross,

  907. was a shameful way to die.

  908. It was the Romans.

  909. They designed crucifixion

  910. to be the most shameful

  911. and painful experience

  912. anyone can experience

  913. to die.

  914. It was incredibly painful

  915. physically,

  916. emotionally,

  917. and socially.

  918. It was shameful.

  919. You died naked,

  920. suffering greatly.

  921. But for Jesus,

  922. on that cross,

  923. He bore God's wrath

  924. for our sin

  925. once for all.

  926. At the cross,

  927. He founded

  928. our salvation.

  929. Despising the shame.

  930. Whatever.

  931. He had a place

  932. of His grace

  933. and is seated

  934. at the right hand

  935. of the throne of God.

  936. His place of exaltation

  937. where He is now.

  938. Sitting on His throne,

  939. welcoming all

  940. that comes to us

  941. at the cross.

  942. He's the source,

  943. founder of our salvation.

  944. On the throne,

  945. Psalm 110.1,

  946. He is sustaining us.

  947. He's perfecting us.

  948. He's finishing

  949. what He started.

  950. He's pouring out grace.

  951. It's Hebrews 4,

  952. 14 through 16.

  953. Do you have a need?

  954. You make a beeline

  955. to the throne of grace.

  956. And He will give you grace

  957. in that time of need

  958. to sustain you

  959. so that you endure

  960. to the end.

  961. He gives us grace

  962. upon grace.

  963. It's a beauty.

  964. He's the founder

  965. of our salvation cross.

  966. He's the finisher

  967. of our salvation throne.

  968. But in verse 3,

  969. we have an example.

  970. Consider Him

  971. who endured from sinners

  972. such hostility

  973. against Himself.

  974. You see,

  975. not only is Jesus

  976. the source

  977. of our salvation,

  978. He is the ultimate example

  979. of finishing the race.

  980. It's all of Hebrews 11

  981. climaxes in Jesus

  982. as the greatest example

  983. of endurance

  984. who finished doing

  985. God's will

  986. at great cost.

  987. He was mocked,

  988. beaten,

  989. unjustly convicted,

  990. imprisoned,

  991. humiliated,

  992. put to death

  993. the ultimate example

  994. of endurance,

  995. such hostility

  996. against Himself.

  997. And it's there

  998. so you don't grow weary

  999. or faint-hearted

  1000. as you pursue Him.

1001. You know why He did it?

1002. For the joy set before Him.

  1003. It could have been

  1004. the exaltation

  1005. of the throne.

  1006. I think it's more likely

  1007. that it's the joy

  1008. of bringing many sons

  1009. and daughters to glory.

  1010. Of gathering for Himself

1011. a people from every tribe,

  1012. tongue, and nation.

1013. A people that have been

  1014. flipped by God's grace

  1015. and delivered from

  1016. the domain of darkness

  1017. and transferred into

1018. the kingdom of the beloved Son.

  1019. And it's us

  1020. around the throne

  1021. with all of those

  1022. who've gone before us

1023. singing the praises of God

1024. for what He has done.

  1025. That joy,

1026. all of the blood bought

  1027. of God,

  1028. gathered together

  1029. for eternity

1030. in the city of heaven,

1031. which He's prepared for us.

  1032. We become part of

  1033. His great cloud

  1034. of witnesses.

1035. He's the one to whom

1036. we fix our eyes on.

1037. We run looking to Him.

  1038. Do you need help

  1039. looking to Jesus?

  1040. I do.

  1041. To help you

  1042. lay aside

  1043. every weight in sin

  1044. and fix your eyes

  1045. on Jesus,

  1046. do you need help?

  1047. Of course.

  1048. prioritize coming

  1049. on Sunday.

  1050. Prioritize gathering together.

  1051. It's God's good design.

  1052. It's a habit of grace

  1053. that we endure together

  1054. by gathering together.

  1055. Another way to,

  1056. for help,

  1057. you're going to get

  1058. an email this afternoon

  1059. from me.

1060. And what I do is

1061. I lay out this week,

  1062. Monday through next Sunday,

1063. and I give you something

  1064. from the Bible

1065. to fix your eyes upon.

  1066. It would be great

  1067. for you to start

  1068. your day that way.

  1069. It would be great

  1070. if you've been looking

  1071. for something to do

  1072. devotionally with your family,

1073. to be in God's Word,

1074. to fix your eyes on Jesus,

  1075. to pray together.

  1076. This would be

  1077. an easy start.

  1078. You'll get that

  1079. at one o'clock

  1080. this afternoon.

  1081. But here's a way

  1082. that has helped me

  1083. this week.

  1084. Parents,

  1085. use your discretion

  1086. with your kids.

  1087. it's writing something.

1088. On my left index finger,

  1089. earlier this week,

  1090. I've been writing

  1091. E-O-J.

  1092. Eyes on Jesus.

  1093. So whatever I'm doing

  1094. that day,

  1095. driving,

  1096. eating,

  1097. working on things,

  1098. eyes on Jesus.

  1099. it's been so helpful.

  1100. I can,

  1101. I look to Him

  1102. throughout the day.

1103. We must finish the race

  1104. and finish strong.

  1105. Run the legacy,

  1106. run light,

  1107. run long,

  1108. run looking to Jesus.

  1109. Distracted drivers

1110. need to keep their eyes

  1111. on the road.

  1112. Christians prone

  1113. to distraction,

1114. and that's all of us,

  1115. need to learn

  1116. to fix our eyes

  1117. on Jesus.

  1118. Eyes on Jesus.

  1119. Let's pray together.

  1120. Lord Jesus,

  1121. we do acknowledge

  1122. that You are

  1123. exalted

  1124. at the right hand

  1125. of God right now,

  1126. the throne,

  1127. and You give grace

  1128. to those in need.

  1129. and we are

  1130. in ongoing need.

  1131. We need You.

  1132. You are everything.

  1133. You are

  1134. the beginning

  1135. and the end,

  1136. the alpha

  1137. and the omega.

  1138. Would You

  1139. sustain us

  1140. this week?

  1141. Would You help us

  1142. to look to You

  1143. with eyes of faith

  1144. and endure

  1145. to the end

  1146. day by day?

  1147. In Jesus' name

  1148. we pray.

  1149. Amen.

  1150. Amen.
