  1. Amen.

  2. If you would open up your Bibles to 1 Thessalonians.

  3. Today is the first sermon of nine.

  4. We're going to make our way through the book of 1 Thessalonians.

  5. It'll bring us through November.

  6. And then by the time we get to December,

  7. we're jumping into the book of John, the gospel of John.

  8. And then we'll be in John for some time after that.

  9. 1 Thessalonians chapter 1, verses 1 through 10.

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  10. This is on page 1172 of your Pew Bible.

  11. Hear the word of the Lord.

  12. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

  13. to the church of the Thessalonians and God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

  14. grace to you and peace.

  15. We give thanks to God always for all of you,

  16. constantly mentioning you in our prayers,

  17. remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love

  18. and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  19. For we know, brothers, loved by God, that He has chosen you.

  20. Because our gospel came to you not only in word,

  21. but also in power, in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.

  22. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake?

  23. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord.

  24. For you received the word in much affliction with the joy of the Holy Spirit.

  25. So that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

  26. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia,

  27. but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere so that we need not say anything.

  28. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you.

  29. And how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God

  30. and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead,

  31. Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.

  32. May God bless the hearing of His word.

  33. Do you know what a chain reaction is?

  34. A chain reaction is when there's a catalyst,

  35. a powerful initiating force or action,

  36. and it sets in motion a series of changes after it,

  37. a series of reactions.

  38. Do you know the song,

  39. It only takes a spark to get a fire going.

  40. You know that song?

  41. You know, it's campfire season.

  42. When you start a campfire,

  43. chain reaction.

  44. Flick, flick, flick.

  45. Click, click, click.

  46. Kindling, burning flames.

  47. Oh, the light, the warmth, the crackle.

  48. Chain reaction.

  49. I know there's at least one man who served on a submarine in this room.

  50. A nuclear sub, Ohio class, U.S. Navy.

  51. You know what it's got power in that thing?

  52. A nuclear reactor.

  53. A reactor.

  54. It's a chain reaction.

  55. The fission happening in the nuclear reactor

  56. is affecting the whole boat.

  57. It powers the whole thing.

  58. And then, of course,

  59. dominoes.

  60. When I was a boy growing up,

  61. me and my brother would get these dominoes,

  62. and we'd stack them on end in long lines,

  63. and then my brother and me would flick the first domino,

  64. and it would start a chain reaction.

  65. And then growing up in the 70s and 80s,

  66. there were these, like, shows devoted to these domino fallings,

  67. like the Guinness Book of World Record,

  68. the biggest domino fall of all.

  69. One domino is struck,

  70. and a whole gymnasium is transformed

  71. with all of these dominoes falling.

  72. Chain reaction.

  73. The gospel of Jesus Christ

  74. is God's catalyst

  75. that brings about a chain reaction

  76. in the lives of people.

  77. The gospel is God's divine catalyst

  78. which brings about change.

  79. And the book of 1 Thessalonians

  80. is record of how the gospel

  81. has radically changed a people's lives.

  82. You can break 1 Thessalonians

  83. basically into two parts.

  84. Chapters 1, 2, and 3,

  85. and then chapters 4 and 5.

  86. And 1, 2, and 3 is like a long introduction.

  87. And chapters 4 and 5,

  88. Paul gets to a lot of the content

  89. that he wants to teach on.

  90. Here in 1 Thessalonians 1, 1 through 10,

  91. I want you to see this.

  92. I want you to see something

  93. that is the effect of the gospel.

  94. It's Thanksgiving.

  95. Chapter 1, 1 through 10,

  96. it's all about Thanksgiving.

  97. And what we have here is

  98. that the gospel of God

  99. makes people thankful to God.

  100. The gospel of God

  101. makes us thankful to God.

  102. It's a cause-effect relationship.

  103. And so here's how this unpacks.

  104. It's in the outlines

  105. in the back of your bulletin.

  106. I'm going to give you the blanks,

  107. fill in the blanks right now.

  108. The Christian norm.

  109. The Christian norm.

  110. Constant thanksgiving.

  111. Reason 1, chosen by God.

  112. Reason 2, changed by God.

  113. Reason 3, converted to God.

  114. And these provide the reasons

  115. why Paul, Silas, and Timothy

  116. are so thankful to God

  117. for what's happening

  118. in this church in Thessalonica.

  119. The gospel of God

  120. makes us thankful to God.

  121. It changes the way you pray

  122. and it even changes

  123. the time zone you're living in.

  124. Let's look at the Christian norm.

  125. Constant thanksgiving to God.

  126. One of the obvious changes

  127. the gospel brings to somebody's life

  128. is it makes them grateful,

  129. makes them thankful.

  130. So look at verse 2.

  131. We give thanks to God always,

  132. always for all of you.

  133. We give thanks to God

  134. always for all of you.

  135. The we, of course,

  136. we find in verse 1.

  137. Paul, Silvanus,

  138. also known as Silas,

  139. and Timothy.

  140. I'll refer to them as PST.

  141. Paul, Silas, Timothy.

  142. Paul, Silas, and Timothy, PST,

  143. are so grateful to God

  144. for what's going on

  145. in the Thessalonian church.

  146. I mean, if you know anything

  147. about Paul and Silas and Timothy,

  148. you know that these three men

  149. have been radically changed

  150. by the gospel of Jesus Christ themselves.

  151. Paul was formerly

  152. a persecutor of the church

  153. and then he met the risen Christ

  154. on the road to Damascus

  155. and he went from being

  156. a persecutor of Christ

  157. to a proclaimer of Christ

  158. and a planter of churches

  159. who worship Jesus Christ.

  160. The Thessalonian church

  161. came into being

  162. during Paul's second missionary journey.

  163. And here's the story behind that.

  164. At the end of Acts 15,

  165. Paul takes Silas

  166. and they're going to go back

  167. to the churches

  168. that were established

  169. during his first missionary journey.

  170. Well, they stop in Lystra.

  171. They pick up Timothy

  172. and now they've gone

  173. to two to three, PST.

  174. You get it?

  175. So they start moving along

  176. and Paul is given a vision

  177. of this guy in Macedonia,

  178. which is the Balkan Peninsula,

  179. more on that later,

  180. and he's like,

  181. come to me.

  182. And so PST changes their plans

  183. and they go to the city of Philippi.

  184. You're familiar with Philippi

  185. because that's where Paul was preaching

  186. and they get arrested,

  187. Paul and Silas.

  188. They're in a jail cell.

  189. Midnight, they're singing hymns.

  190. Big earthquake.

  191. The jailer's like,

  192. what must I do to be saved?

  193. And he and his whole household

  194. become Christians.

  195. Remember that story?

  196. Acts 16?

  197. From Philippi,

  198. Paul, Silas, and Timothy, PST,

  199. they go to Thessalonica.

  200. And so the we here

  201. is Paul the Apostle,

  202. Silas, and Timothy,

  203. and they are so thankful to God

  204. always for all of you.

  205. The you is actually a y'all.

  206. The church of the Thessalonians.

  207. And they are quite an interesting people.

  208. If you turn in your Bibles

  209. to Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  210. here's the account

  211. of the gospel first coming

  212. to the city of Thessalonica

  213. and how it was received.

  214. I'm just going to read it.

  215. It's on page 1100

  216. of your Pew Bible.

  217. Acts 17.

  218. Now when they had passed through

  219. Amphipolis,

  220. something of that nature,

  221. in Apollonia,

  222. they came to Thessalonica

  223. where there was a synagogue

  224. of the Jews.

  225. And Paul went in

  226. as was his custom.

  227. And on three Sabbath days,

  228. he reasoned with them

  229. from the scriptures,

  230. explaining and proving

  231. that it was necessary

  232. for the Christ to suffer

  233. and to rise from the dead

  234. and saying,

  235. this Jesus whom I proclaim to you

  236. is the Christ.

  237. That's him proclaiming the gospel.

  238. For example,

  239. Jesus is the Christ

  240. who died and was raised

  241. for your salvation.

  242. And then look what happens.

  243. Verse 4.

  244. And some of them

  245. were persuaded.

  246. Some of the Jews

  247. who were in the synagogues

  248. were persuaded

  249. and joined Paul and Silas.

  250. They switched teams.

  251. They became Christians.

  252. As did a great many

  253. of the devout Greeks

  254. and not a few

  255. of the leading women.

  256. Those are Gentiles.

  257. And so there was a group

  258. of Jews that became Christians

  259. and then a really big group

  260. of Gentiles

  261. that became Christians.

  262. But the Jews,

  263. those who didn't believe,

  264. the Jews were jealous.

  265. And taking some wicked men

  266. of the rabble,

  267. they formed a mob

  268. and set the city

  269. in an uproar

  270. and attacked the house

  271. of Jason,

  272. seeking to bring them

  273. out of the ground.

  274. Them being Paul, Silas,

  275. and Timothy, PST.

  276. And when they could not

  277. find them,

  278. they dragged Jason

  279. and some of the brothers,

  280. recent converts,

  281. before the city authorities,

  282. shouting,

  283. These men who have turned

  284. the world upside down

  285. have come here also.

  286. And Jason has received them,

  287. that punk,

  288. and they are all acting

  289. against the decrees

  290. of Caesar,

  291. saying that there's

  292. another king,

  293. Jesus.

  294. Amen.

  295. Amen.

  296. And the people

  297. in the city authorities

  298. were disturbed

  299. when they heard these things

  300. and when they had taken money

  301. as security from Jason

  302. and the rest,

  303. they let them go.

  304. Look at verse 10.

  305. The brothers,

  306. recent converts

  307. in Thessalonica,

  308. immediately sent Paul

  309. and Silas away

  310. by night to Berea.

  311. That's the start

  312. of the Thessalonian church.

  313. It's extraordinary.

  314. The gospel comes,

  315. comes in power,

  316. there's this huge response,

  317. and not just a response

  318. of followers of Jesus,

  319. there is persecution

  320. that breaks out,

  321. affliction,

  322. hardship,

  323. hardship.

  324. But there's more

  325. to the story.

  326. When Paul leaves

  327. by night,

  328. if you look at

  329. chapter 2,

  330. verse 17,

  331. here's his own words

  332. on it.

  333. But since we were

  334. torn away from you,

  335. brothers,

  336. something happened

  337. between Paul

  338. and the Thessalonian church.

  339. Something sweet,

  340. something good.

  341. It was a tearing away

  342. from this people.

  343. He didn't want to go.

  344. And so they leave,

  345. they then go to Berea,

  346. and then Paul goes to Athens,

  347. chapter 17,

  348. preaches to the Areopagus,

  349. right,

  350. Mars Hill,

  351. if you remember that.

  352. And then from Athens,

  353. he then goes to Corinth

  354. to plant a church there,

  355. and he's in Corinth

  356. for 18 months.

  357. But before he went

  358. to Corinth,

  359. they sent Timothy

  360. back to Thessalonica.

  361. You can see that

  362. in chapter 3,

  363. verse 1,

  364. therefore when we

  365. could bear it no longer,

  366. we were willing

  367. to be left behind

  368. at Athens alone,

  369. and we sent Timothy,

  370. our brother and God's

  371. co-worker in the gospel

  372. of Christ to establish

  373. and exhort you

  374. in the faith.

  375. So they send Timothy back.

  376. They're like,

  377. Paul's like,

  378. will you please

  379. check on these Thessalonians?

  380. I'm so concerned

  381. about them.

  382. And so Paul goes

  383. on to Corinth,

  384. and then they all

  385. meet back up in Corinth.

  386. And could you imagine

  387. that meeting?

  388. Paul sees Timothy

  389. coming up

  390. wherever he's staying,

  391. now if I was Paul,

  392. I'd be like,

  393. okay,

  394. I gotta be nice

  395. to Timothy,

  396. but I really wanna know

  397. about the Thessalonians.

  398. So Timothy,

  399. how are you doing?

  400. Anything interesting?

  401. How are the Thessalonians?

  402. And what

  403. Timothy shares,

  404. you can see in verse 6

  405. of chapter 3,

  406. but now that Timothy

  407. has come to us

  408. from you

  409. and has brought

  410. us the good news

  411. of your faith

  412. and love

  413. and reported that

  414. always,

  415. you will always

  416. remember us kindly

  417. and long to see you.

  418. Look at verse 8.

  419. For now we live

  420. if you are standing

  421. fast in the Lord.

  422. They were suffering

  423. for Jesus

  424. in their absence

  425. and they were thriving

  426. in Jesus.

  427. You wanna know

  428. why this book

  429. is written?

  430. Paul is so thankful

  431. for what God

  432. is doing

  433. among these people.

  434. So thankful.

  435. And it's a constant

  436. thanksgiving.

  437. But it's just not true

  438. of Paul,

  439. Silas,

  440. and Timothy

  441. having regular

  442. breakouts of

  443. thanksgiving

  444. in Corinth

  445. for what God

  446. is doing

  447. in Thessalonica.

  448. If you look at

  449. most of the

  450. New Testament books

  451. and how they start,

  452. Colossians 1.3,

  453. Philippians 1.3,

  454. Ephesians 1.16,

  455. 1 Corinthians 1.4,

  456. Romans 1.8,

  457. 2 Timothy 1.3,

  458. Philemon 4.

  459. It all starts

  460. with thanksgiving

  461. for what God

  462. is doing

  463. in a particular church.

  464. That's a lot

  465. of prayers

  466. of thanksgiving

  467. that PST

  468. were making.

  469. What's extraordinary

  470. about it

  471. is how they are

  472. so others focused.

  473. Their prayers

  474. are to God

  475. with thanksgiving

  476. for what he is doing

  477. in the lives

  478. of so many

  479. other people.

  480. Their lives

  481. were enriched.

  482. in their knowledge

  483. of what God

  484. was doing.

  485. When you pray

  486. for people,

  487. what are you praying?

  488. Are you giving

  489. thanks for what

  490. God is doing

  491. in their lives?

  492. Do you know?

  493. It's very instructive.

  494. So what we see here,

  495. the Christian norm,

  496. is this constant,

  497. constant thanksgiving.

  498. And now,

  499. let's get into

  500. the three reasons.

  501. There are reasons

  502. why Paul

  503. is so thankful.

  504. Why this group

  505. of three

  506. are regularly

  507. giving thanksgiving.

  508. Reason number one

  509. is they know

  510. that these Thessalonians

  511. were chosen

  512. by God.

  513. Look at verse four.

  514. For we know,

  515. brothers,

  516. sisters,

  517. loved by God,

  518. that he has chosen you.

  519. What a statement

  520. coming from

  521. an apostle.

  522. Wait,

  523. the apostle Paul

  524. is thanking God

  525. that he has chosen us?

  526. That would have been

  527. so encouraging

  528. if you were a Thessalonian.

  529. Now,

  530. when you hear

  531. and read chosen,

  532. we're talking about

  533. God's role

  534. in our salvation.

  535. And with that

  536. come some other words

  537. that you may or may not

  538. be familiar with.

  539. Election,

  540. predestination,

  541. and all of a sudden,

  542. we're all together

  543. swimming in the deep end

  544. of the theological pool.

  545. What is the relationship

  546. between God's sovereignty,

  547. his choice,

  548. and our responsibility

  549. of repentance

  550. and faith?

  551. How does that

  552. work out?

  553. Well,

  554. let's get in the deep end

  555. of the pool a little bit.

  556. There are basically

  557. two ways

  558. to understand

  559. what it means

  560. to be chosen by God.

  561. The first way

  562. is to think along this,

  563. like this.

  564. God chooses us,

  565. his choice of us

  566. is determined

  567. by us

  568. first choosing him.

  569. And the idea

  570. behind that

  571. is an interpretation

  572. of Romans 829

  573. where those whom

  574. God foreknew,

  575. he also predestined.

  576. And so the thinking

  577. goes like this.

  578. God foreseeing

  579. into the future

  580. those who would

  581. choose him,

  582. trust him,

  583. believe in him,

  584. he predestined them

  585. based on

  586. their choice of him.

  587. So God's choosing

  588. is made

  589. on our choosing

  590. in his foreseeing

  591. of that.

  592. It's a common view.

  593. I used to hold

  594. to this view

  595. and I used to hold

  596. to this view passionately.

  597. I got into some

  598. fights over it.

  599. But that changed.

  600. The second view

  601. is that

  602. our choosing

  603. God

  604. is determined

  605. by God

  606. first choosing

  607. us.

  608. That's the second

  609. view,

  610. second way

  611. of understanding

  612. that.

  613. And it

  614. understands

  615. Romans 829,

  616. those whom

  617. God foreknew,

  618. he predestined.

  619. It's not so much

  620. of a foreseeing

  621. as a foreloving,

  622. as a love

  623. from eternity past.

  624. And before

  625. the foundation

  626. of the world,

  627. God set his love

  628. on those

  629. who would later

  630. choose him.

  631. So,

  632. it's God

  633. initiated.

  634. Now,

  635. I personally

  636. came to that

  637. view,

  638. it took a long

  639. time.

  640. I had to have

  641. a lot of

  642. conversations

  643. with a lot

  644. of people

  645. and wrestled

  646. with my Bible

  647. quite a bit.

  648. When I first

  649. heard this

  650. view,

  651. I was

  652. repulsed by it.

  653. It wasn't

  654. my experience.

  655. But as I

  656. strove to

  657. understand God's

  658. word fully,

  659. and as I

  660. strove to

  661. understand what

  662. exactly is

  663. God's sovereignty,

  664. and what

  665. exactly is the

  666. extent of our

  667. sinfulness,

  668. and how that

  669. affects us,

  670. I soon realized,

  671. oh man,

  672. I need to give

  673. this more

  674. thought.

  675. Now,

  676. if this is new

  677. to you,

  678. I have a book

  679. for you.

  680. I've got one

  681. up here and four

  682. on the

  683. connect desk

  684. outside those

  685. doors.

  686. It's called

  687. Humble Calvinism.

  688. It's by J.A.

  689. Meadors.

  690. It's a laugh

  691. out loud book.

  692. He doesn't

  693. take himself

  694. too seriously.

  695. And so,

  696. if this is new

  697. to you,

  698. this would be

  699. a great book

  700. to read,

  701. to get acquainted

  702. with this idea

  703. of God's

  704. sovereign role

  705. in choosing

  706. us before

  707. the foundation

  708. of the world.

  709. Now,

  710. there's a word

  711. in verse

  712. four that I

  713. want you to

  714. see.

  715. It's not the

  716. word chosen.

  717. It's the

  718. word loved.

  719. For we know,

  720. brothers,

  721. loved by God,

  722. that he has

  723. chosen you.

  724. God's choosing

  725. us was out

  726. of his love

  727. for us,

  728. loved before

  729. the foundation

  730. of the world.

  731. So,

  732. whether you

  733. believe God's

  734. choosing us

  735. was first

  736. determined by

  737. our choosing

  738. him,

  739. or our

  740. choice of

  741. God was

  742. first determined

  743. by God's

  744. choice of

  745. us,

  746. we do know

  747. that he

  748. chose us

  749. because he

  750. loves us.

  751. Listen to

  752. Ephesians

  753. chapter one,

  754. verses four

  755. and five.

  756. deep waters.

  757. Deep waters.

  758. A lot to

  759. think about.

  760. God.

  761. But what

  762. Paul is

  763. saying here

  764. is he's

  765. giving thanks

  766. to God

  767. for this

  768. Thessalonian

  769. church because

  770. he recognizes

  771. God had

  772. chosen them.

  773. They

  774. belong to

  775. him.

  776. And again,

  777. if you were

  778. a Thessalonian

  779. reading that,

  780. you would be

  781. incredibly

  782. encouraged by

  783. that.

  784. It would be

  785. a tremendous

  786. assurance,

  787. a tremendous

  788. comfort,

  789. and my

  790. opinion is

  791. the doctrine

  792. of election,

  793. the doctrine

  794. of predestination

  795. is to

  796. encourage and

  797. comfort

  798. Christians.

  799. But Paul

  800. points to

  801. something here.

  802. He says,

  803. here's how I

  804. know.

  805. Here's how I

  806. know you're

  807. chosen.

  808. It's in

  809. verse five,

  810. because.

  811. For we know

  812. brothers,

  813. loved by God,

  814. that he has

  815. chosen you

  816. because.

  817. Because what?

  818. What happened?

  819. Because our

  820. gospel came to

  821. you not only

  822. in word,

  823. but also in

  824. power and in

  825. the Holy Spirit

  826. and with full

  827. conviction.

  828. We're back in

  829. Acts 17,

  830. 1 through 10.

  831. We're back

  832. there where

  833. Paul is

  834. preaching Christ

  835. in the synagogue

  836. in Thessalonica

  837. three Saturdays

  838. in a row,

  839. and something

  840. happens.

  841. PST is aware

  842. of a unique

  843. happening during

  844. the preaching

  845. of Christ.

  846. theologians

  847. talk about it

  848. as the general

  849. call of the

  850. gospel and the

  851. effectual call

  852. of the gospel.

  853. The general

  854. call of the

  855. gospel is when

  856. a person

  857. proclaims Christ

  858. with words.

  859. The effectual

  860. call is when

  861. God is

  862. powerfully

  863. working in

  864. that preaching

  865. to draw people

  866. to himself.

  867. And that is

  868. what they're

  869. describing here.

  870. they were

  871. aware that

  872. God was

  873. powerfully

  874. at work

  875. in Thessalonica

  876. when they were

  877. preaching the

  878. gospel.

  879. Look at how

  880. they describe it.

  881. Because our

  882. gospel came

  883. to you not

  884. only in word,

  885. not just a

  886. general call,

  887. but also in

  888. power, in the

  889. Holy Spirit,

  890. and with full

  891. conviction.

  892. It was

  893. effectual.

  894. Paul describes

  895. this power in

  896. two ways.

  897. He describes

  898. it, the

  899. source of the

  900. power, as the

  901. Holy Spirit,

  902. and the effect

  903. of that as

  904. full conviction.

  905. The Holy Spirit,

  906. more likely than

  907. not, there were

  908. signs and wonders

  909. happening in

  910. Thessalonica when

  911. the gospel was

  912. being proclaimed.

  913. But you can

  914. better believe it,

  915. that the Spirit

  916. of God was

  917. convicting these

  918. Thessalonians

  919. of their

  920. idolatry.

  921. That they were

  922. worshiping false

  923. gods.

  924. That the lives

  925. that they were

  926. living were

  927. abhorrent in

  928. God's sight.

  929. That their sin

  930. condemned them

  931. in God's eyes.

  932. It was a

  933. kindness that the

  934. Holy Spirit would

  935. convict them of

  936. that.

  937. But then you can

  938. bank on it, the

  939. Spirit was

  940. illuminating them

  941. at the same time

  942. so that they

  943. would see that

  944. Jesus is the

  945. only name given

  946. among men by

  947. which we can be

  948. saved.

  949. Their eyes were

  950. opened, their

  951. hearts were

  952. inclined.

  953. And so this

  954. powerful pouring

  955. out of God's

  956. Spirit in

  957. Thessalonica, Paul

  958. is saying, we

  959. know you were

  960. chosen because

  961. look at it.

  962. Look what God

  963. did.

  964. The full

  965. conviction is

  966. describing the

  967. response.

  968. It's kind of like

  969. this.

  970. it's when the

  971. Thessalonians were

  972. listening to Paul

  973. preach Christ and

  974. they're sitting

  975. there like, man, I

  976. am a sinner.

  977. Oh man, and this

  978. is the best news I

  979. have ever heard in

  980. my life.

  981. There's only one

  982. way to be saved,

  983. it's through this

  984. Jesus.

  985. I'm fully

  986. convinced.

  987. In other words,

  988. they were all in.

  989. They responded with

  990. full conviction that

  991. they recognized this

  992. is God addressing

  993. their hearts.

  994. And so Paul,

  995. Silas,

  996. Timothy are giving

  997. thanks to God that

  998. this group of

  999. Christians were

  1000. chosen by God.

  1001. They're so

  1002. thankful.

  1003. faithful.

  1004. This is what the

  1005. gospel does.

  1006. Romans 1.16, I am

  1007. not ashamed of the

  1008. gospel because it

  1009. is God's power unto

  1010. salvation.

  1011. It's God's power to

  1012. forgive sin and

  1013. satisfy God's wrath.

  1014. It's God's power to

  1015. give spiritual life to

  1016. the spiritual dead.

  1017. It's God's power to

  1018. change someone's

  1019. eternity.

  1020. It's God's power to

  1021. change your desires

1022. from wanting to sin to

  1023. wanting to live for

  1024. Jesus Christ,

  1025. treasuring him above

  1026. all else.

  1027. Only the gospel does

  1028. that.

  1029. And that's why they're

  1030. giving thanks.

  1031. They're so thankful.

  1032. The gospel of God

  1033. makes us thankful to

  1034. God.

  1035. It's a catalyst.

  1036. And so this first

  1037. reason is that they're

  1038. giving thanks because

  1039. they were convinced

  1040. that this church is

  1041. chosen.

  1042. Chosen by God's grace

  1043. and mercy.

  1044. Reason number two,

  1045. they were changed by

  1046. God.

  1047. They're given thanks

  1048. because they had been

  1049. changed by God.

1050. And I'm going to fast

  1051. forward this one because

1052. I really want to get

  1053. the reason number three.

1054. So let me give you the

  1055. nuts and bolts.

  1056. Changed by God.

1057. We see it in verse six,

  1058. and you became imitators

1059. of us and of the Lord.

1060. The gospel had such an

  1061. impact that these

  1062. Thessalonians got

  1063. flipped.

  1064. They switched to who

  1065. they were imitating.

  1066. I don't know who they're

  1067. imitating before, but then

  1068. they start imitating Paul,

  1069. Silas, and Timothy, and

  1070. Jesus.

1071. Did you see that in verse

  1072. six?

1073. And you became imitators of

1074. us and of the Lord.

1075. So they were changed in who

  1076. they imitate.

1077. imitate, and we get to

1078. ask the question, in what

  1079. way?

  1080. How were they imitating

  1081. them?

1082. And we see in verse six,

1083. for you received the word

1084. in much affliction with joy

  1085. of the Holy Spirit.

  1086. What marked their change

1087. and their imitating of PST

1088. in the Lord Jesus Christ

1089. was not only that they were

  1090. being afflicted for Christ,

1091. but they were full of joy

1092. from the Holy Spirit in the

  1093. midst of that.

1094. How do you explain that?

  1095. Other than they've been

1096. changed by the power of

  1097. God.

1098. And so they became imitators

  1099. of Paul, Silas, Timothy,

  1100. and Jesus.

1101. But it's more than that.

1102. Not only did they become

  1103. imitators, look at verse

  1104. seven.

  1105. They became examples.

1106. So that you became an

1107. example to all the believers

  1108. in Macedonia and Achaia.

  1109. That's the Balkan

  1110. Peninsula.

  1111. Maybe you know where

  1112. Greece is.

  1113. Maybe you know where

  1114. Albania is.

1115. On the west side of the

  1116. Balkan Peninsula is the

  1117. Adriatic Sea.

1118. On the east side is the

  1119. Aegean Sea.

1120. On the south side is the

  1121. Mediterranean Sea.

1122. The churches in this area,

1123. they would have been the

  1124. churches like Philippi, of

  1125. Corinth, of Athens.

  1126. Sancria, where if you're

  1127. familiar with Lydia from

1128. Romans 16, where she is

  1129. from.

  1130. Berea.

1131. These were the churches in

1132. this area and they became

1133. aware of what God had been

  1134. doing in the Thessalonians.

1135. Here's the equivalent of it.

  1136. What's happening is the

  1137. equivalent, first century

  1138. equivalent, of something going

  1139. viral.

  1140. It's gone viral.

1141. The faith of the Thessalonians,

1142. of what God has done, has

  1143. gone viral.

1144. Their example, not only of

1145. their suffering, but of their

  1146. evangelism.

1147. Let me point that out to you.

1148. For not only, verse 8, has the

1149. word of the Lord sounded forth

1150. from you in Macedonia and Achaia.

1151. That sounded forth, the word of

1152. the Lord, that's the gospel.

  1153. It's echoing through the

  1154. region.

1155. But your faith in God has gone

1156. forth everywhere so that we

  1157. need not say anything.

1158. Do you see how they've become

  1159. examples?

1160. Not just in their joyful

1161. suffering, but in their bold

  1162. evangelism.

1163. The evangelized have become the

  1164. evangelists.

  1165. It's beautiful.

1166. So, they've been changed by God.

  1167. They're no longer

  1168. proselytizing something other

  1169. than Jesus.

  1170. They are proclaiming Christ

  1171. boldly, at cost.

1172. We can ask this question coming

  1173. out of it.

1174. It's, has the gospel changed you

  1175. like that?

1176. Who are you seeking to imitate?

1177. Are you seeking to imitate

  1178. Jesus?

1179. How bold is your evangelism?

1180. Are you talking to other people

  1181. about Jesus?

1182. You see, the gospel is God's

1183. catalyst, and it brings about a

1184. chain reaction in the way that we

1185. suffer with joy, and it brings

1186. about boldness in our evangelism.

1187. The third reason why PST, we're

1188. so thankful to God for the

1189. Thessalonians, is that PST were

1190. convinced that they had been

  1191. converted to God.

1192. So, chosen by God, changed by

1193. God, third reason, converted to

1194. God, and we see that in verse

  1195. nine.

  1196. For they themselves report

1197. concerning us the kind of

1198. reception we had among you, and

  1199. here comes the conversion

1200. language, and how you turn to God

1201. from idols to serve the living and

1202. true God, and to wait for his son

1203. from heaven, whom he raised from

1204. the dead, Jesus who delivers us

1205. from the wrath to come.

  1206. Amen.

1207. What has gone viral is that the

  1208. Thessalonians had been radically

  1209. changed by the gospel.

1210. And this turning language, and how you

1211. turn to God from idols to serve the

1212. living and true God, that is getting

1213. at this idea of conversion.

1214. Turning from idols and turning to God,

  1215. God.

  1216. It's how you become a Christian.

  1217. You've become a Christian by being

  1218. converted.

  1219. Imagine this.

1220. This is going to be incredibly, this

1221. is a very sensitive topic.

1222. And so, please, just hear me out.

  1223. Could you imagine this?

1224. A Bears fan converting to becoming a

  1225. Packers fan.

  1226. Could you imagine that?

  1227. Here's what would happen.

1228. Here's what would need to happen.

1229. The Bears fan would be like, I'm

  1230. giving, burning my jerseys.

1231. I'm pulling down my posters.

1232. I am taking off the license plate frame

  1233. thing.

1234. I'm peeling off the bumper sticker.

1235. I am no longer watching Bears games.

  1236. I don't care what's happening to the

1237. coaches and players and trades.

  1238. I don't, where is Soldier Field

  1239. anyway?

  1240. They don't care.

1241. They've turned their back on being a

1242. Bears fan, and they've gone full in

1243. to being a Packers fan.

1244. They've got Packers fan jerseys, knit

  1245. hats.

1246. They have Packers platters in which

  1247. they serve cheese.

1248. This is what they do.

1249. Really cool bumper stickers, and they get

  1250. a tattoo of a cheese head.

1251. You know that they're all in.

  1252. You switch teams.

1253. When someone becomes a Christian, they

  1254. switch teams decisively, definitively.

1255. I'm no longer part of team world who are

1256. living for things that are fake and have no

1257. life, and I have made a full switch to team

1258. Jesus, in whom alone is salvation, the living and

  1259. true God.

1260. Conversion is a dramatic, decisive change.

  1261. Conversion.

1262. You're turning your back on sin, and you're

1263. turning to God through Christ.

  1264. Conversion.

1265. And what Paul is saying is here is like, we know

  1266. you were converted.

1267. We know you've been radically changed.

1268. We know that you are no longer living for idols, false

1269. gods, false promises, no life there.

1270. The Thessalonians were probably worshiping Greco-Roman

  1271. gods.

1272. They were probably living sexually promiscuous

1273. lifestyles, because that was the norm of the world.

1274. They were probably just living for themselves.

1275. In 21st century America, what Carl Truman says,

  1276. expressive individualism.

  1277. Live your truth.

1278. We've got to turn our back on that.

  1279. Moral therapeutic deism.

1280. It's God works for me to make me feel good.

1281. It's making God in our own image.

1282. We turn to these things.

  1283. These are idols.

1284. There's no life in them.

1285. Or maybe it's the God of the like.

1286. We just want to be liked.

1287. You just want to be approved and accepted.

  1288. There's no life there.

1289. You've got to turn to that.

  1290. Idol.

  1291. Turn away from that.

1292. And you turn to the living and true God.

1293. The God of the Bible.

  1294. The living God.

1295. Who is the giver of all life.

  1296. Both physical and spiritual.

1297. The God who is the true God.

  1298. He is true reality.

  1299. Reality.

1300. And he reveals what is true in his word.

1301. You turn from these false, dead, hopeless things.

1302. And you turn to that God who is alive and is true and is our hope.

  1303. But.

1304. You can't do that on your own.

1305. The only thing that can make a dead sinner who is living for idols want to live for the one true living God is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

1306. It's the power of God unto salvation.

1307. There's nothing that you can do to change yourself.

1308. It's only by God's grace and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  1309. Think about this.

1310. Jesus is the ultimate repo man.

  1311. You can't repo yourself.

1312. You are in wicked debt to God because of your sin.

1313. But Jesus came for you.

  1314. And he repoed you.

1315. And now you belong as you should be to the living God.

  1316. There's no going back.

1317. Or maybe do you remember the 16th century stargazer, Nicholas Copernicus?

1318. Because before Copernicus, everybody thought that we lived in a geocentric solar system, that the sun orbited the earth.

1319. And then Copernicus, with his kind of observations, realized, no, no, no, no, no.

1320. We live in a heliocentric solar system.

1321. The earth orbits the sun.

1322. It was always like that.

  1323. He just discovered reality.

1324. What the gospel does is it gives sinners eyes to see that you are not the center of your solar system.

  1325. Jesus is.

1326. And it moves us from living for ourselves to living, bring brought into reality that Jesus Christ, risen, reigning, one day returning,

1327. he is the controlling center of all things in whom we orbit.

  1328. He is.

  1329. Joyfully.

  1330. This is conversion.

1331. This is the change that happens when you encounter the power of God in the gospel.

  1332. And it's wonderful.

1333. So here's the question it begs.

  1334. Have you been converted?

  1335. Have you switched teams?

1336. Have you turned your back on false idols in order to serve the living God?

  1337. Have you done that?

1338. You can do that today.

  1339. You just cry out.

1340. You say, Lord Jesus, you're where it's at.

  1341. I'm a sinner.

1342. You've died for my sin.

  1343. I'm living for you.

1344. It's the stake in the ground.

1345. And you can do that today.

1346. Come find me after the service.

1347. I'd be happy to help you pray that to God.

1348. And you go from death to life.

  1349. You switch teams.

  1350. Please.

1351. There's one effect that I need you to see here.

  1352. One additional effect.

1353. When you become a Christian, you switch time zones.

1354. We recently had some people from our church in Israel that came back.

1355. And it takes a while to switch back to time zones.

1356. Did you notice verse 10?

  1357. Word is out.

  1358. It's viral.

1359. That the Thessalonians had been converted.

1360. And now they're waiting for his son from heaven.

1361. Whom he raised from the dead.

1362. Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

1363. They were living in a new time zone now.

  1364. It's called Christ time.

  1365. Not mountain time.

  1366. Not central time.

  1367. Christ time.

1368. And what that is, is now, because of the gospel,

1369. it now changes your outlook.

  1370. It changes your hope.

1371. And now we're waiting for the return of Jesus.

1372. And we're living lives in accordance with that.

1373. First Thessalonians is packed with references to the return of Jesus Christ.

  1374. It's very strategic to a church that's suffering.

  1375. It aims us.

1376. So one of the further effects of the gospel is that it changes our hope.

1377. What we're looking forward to most.

1378. First, and in this case, it's the return of Jesus Christ.

1379. Steadfast in your hope, Paul says in verse 3.

1380. The hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1381. Him coming back.

1382. And here's how it all works.

1383. When you are on Christ time, you're saying things like,

1384. we're one day closer to Jesus coming back.

  1385. Woo!

  1386. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

1387. When you're aware that Christ is coming back,

1388. you're going to be aware of eternal things.

1389. You're going to be aware that when Jesus comes back,

1390. not only is he coming to deliver us,

1391. but the wrath of God is coming too.

1392. Which means it changes the way that we see people.

1393. We see people, and how will they stand on that day?

1394. So when you're living on Christ time,

1395. it will embolden your evangelism.

1396. It will change the way that you see people,

1397. not in relationship to you,

1398. but in relationship to Christ.

  1399. Christ.

  1400. It's a good effect.

  1401. It's a healthy effect.

1402. When you're serving the living God.

1403. And it was because of this conversion

1404. that they are giving thanks.

1405. Chosen by God, changed by God, converted to God.

1406. This is what stirs their thankfulness.

  1407. This past week, midweek,

1408. I started changing the way I pray for you.

1409. I pray for 10 of our members every day.

  1410. And I'm usually praying,

1411. Oh Lord, would you help so-and-so treasure you?

1412. Would you help them treasure you in their marriage,

1413. in their parenting, in their work?

1414. If I'm aware of other things going on,

1415. I'll pray for that as well.

1416. But did you know when I started praying for you this week?

1417. Oh God, thank you so much

  1418. for choosing this person,

  1419. for changing this person,

  1420. for converting this person.

1421. Thank you God for your kindness to them.

  1422. Thank you.

1423. It's a game changer in terms of your prayer life.

1424. It gets you focused on what God is doing

1425. in the lives of others around you.

1426. And it gets our focus on God.

1427. It changes the way you pray.

1428. And it changes how you synchronize your watch.

1429. The gospel of Jesus Christ,

  1430. the gospel of God,

1431. makes us thankful to God

1432. because of what God is doing.

  1433. Let's pray.

1434. God, thank you so much for your word.

1435. Thank you for 1 Thessalonians.

1436. God, would you use this to stir us

  1437. in new ways

  1438. that we would delight

  1439. more and more

1440. in what you are doing in our midst.

1441. And then more and more,

  1442. we are awaiting

1443. the return of your son,

  1444. our king, Jesus.

1445. In your name we pray.

  1446. Amen.
