  1. If you would like to follow passage in your Bibles, if you have the Pew Bible, it's page 1173, 1 Thessalonians 4.

  2. ! I'm actually going to read the section that Zach preached on last week and then flow into the next section verses 9-12.

  3. That'll kind of help us to see how this all connects, I think.

  4. So, Paul writes to the Thessalonian church,

  5. Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.

  6. For that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia.

  7. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, and to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs,

  8. and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may live properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

  9. You can see some phrases that Paul uses again in the second part that he used in the first part,

  10. about the idea of, for you yourselves have been taught, and so forth, and I ask you to do this more and more, those kinds of things.

  11. So I think all this connects.

  12. Generally speaking, we try hard to please people, and that's appropriate, at least usually.

  13. We certainly are not to be people pleasers.

  14. The Bible's pretty clear about that, in the sense that we would sacrifice truth and righteousness to accomplish that.

  15. But when we do something, I think we do hope that people are pleased by our efforts.

  16. Surely, we don't begin to do something with the expressed intention of irritating other people, like, I hope this really ticks them off.

  17. You know, we don't start that way.

  18. I'm sorry to say that some people, even believers, are not immune to such immature and unspiritual reactions,

  19. but that really should never be a pattern of life for us.

  20. Even more important than living so as to please others, however, is living to please God.

  21. I mean, do we want God to be pleased with the way we live?

  22. I hope we do.

  23. The author of Hebrews reminded us that without faith, it is, what, impossible to please God.

  24. So, if we have any desire to please God, that can only really happen if we have trusted the Savior,

  25. if we have been born again in Him.

  26. Paul told the Corinthians that God was pleased with the foolishness of preaching,

  27. which God uses as a means to make Himself known through the proclamation of the gospel.

  28. Salvation is, remember, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone,

  29. revealed through the Scripture alone, or the glory of God alone.

  30. So, that's the faith that we have.

  31. That's the understanding of the gospel that we should believe.

  32. The author of Hebrews, remember, commended Enoch as one who pleased God.

  33. So, I take it from that that it must be possible for us as believers to be able to please God with the way we live.

  34. Though we who belong to Jesus Christ have the capacity to please God, it's not automatic.

  35. We read in the Scripture that sometimes God is not pleased.

  36. Surely we don't want that.

  37. These are specific statements.

  38. There are specific statements in the Bible that declare that God is pleased if we do what He says.

  39. That's what we have in this particular text.

  40. So, if you want to please God, Paul tells us in this first Thessalonian letter how we can.

  41. And what he declares to us through the written revelation, I think it's practical, it's understandable,

  42. but it's not always very well accomplished or very easily accomplished.

  43. But if we want to please God, this is what we're called to do.

  44. So, the areas that kind of shape in this passage, at least in my understanding,

  45. first, Paul deals with what Zach did last week, how we use our bodies to please God.

  46. And then the next two sections in the little passage that we read after that,

  47. how we treat our brothers and sisters in Christ, how we treat other believers,

  48. and then how we conduct our business.

  49. All of those are important in our understanding of how to please God.

  50. So, I'm going to sort of do a little bit of a recap on some of the things that Zach said,

  51. not because I think he missed anything,

  52. but because I think it's sometimes good for us to be reminded,

  53. and this also kind of gives us a movement ahead into the rest of the passage.

  54. So, if we are to please God in the way we use our bodies,

  55. we have to meet the goal of holiness.

  56. I want to start out with some preventative maintenance just for a minute.

  57. I mean, we may need to hear some things again, so that's what we're going to do.

  58. Growing in Christ means learning how to walk through life in all kinds of situations

  59. with the goal of pleasing God.

  60. Because of factors such as our own sinful tendencies,

  61. the allurements of the world,

  62. and the relentless tempting of the enemy,

  63. we need periodic checkups.

  64. Without realizing it, I think we suffer something I've kind of called carnal creep.

  65. All right?

  66. We slowly slide towards sin without realizing how far away we've wandered.

  67. Now, anything with the word creep in it usually isn't good.

  68. And by the way, though we may creep into carnality,

  69. we do not creep into righteousness.

  70. Okay?

  71. That's a challenge.

  72. That's intentional.

  73. That's work to do that.

  74. That's the direction we should be going.

  75. Well, Paul was encouraging the Thessalonians

  76. to accept as a priority some mid-course corrections,

  77. and we would do well to pay attention.

  78. So, what is at stake here is doing the will of God,

  79. pleasing God, being set apart,

  80. becoming sanctified people of God.

  81. To be set apart to God is the will of God,

  82. and when that happens, God is pleased.

  83. So, there is to be a difference,

  84. an uncommonness in our walk.

  85. It should be a walk of holiness,

  86. a walk of purity.

  87. One way that we should look different

  88. than the walk of the world is,

  89. and by the way, I think sometimes we think

  90. Christians should be weird.

  91. No, they shouldn't.

  92. Okay?

  93. We're not weird.

  94. Okay?

  95. We're not, we're different.

  96. All right?

  97. That's not, there's two different things there.

  98. All right?

  99. I've met some Christians that were probably that way, weird.

  100. But we're to be different,

  101. and the world should pick up on that.

  102. And I think that as we understand

  103. what Paul is saying here,

  104. we'll get that.

  105. The word sanctification is kind of a big word,

  106. but it doesn't need to be a foreign word to us.

  107. It carries the idea of being uncommon,

  108. different, special, set apart for a purpose.

  109. We belong to God because he purchased us.

  110. You remember what Paul said to the Corinthians,

  111. you are not your own.

  112. What?

  113. You are what?

  114. Bought with a price.

  115. Therefore, glorify God in your bodies.

  116. So how we live is to be different

  117. from the way other people live.

  118. How does that look?

  119. Well, he tells us negatively,

  120. some things have no place in the life of believers.

  121. And as Zach addressed this faithfully and firmly last week,

  122. we are to abstain from immorality.

  123. This is a negative aspect of Paul's counsel.

  124. We learned last week that sexual immorality is a general term

  125. describing various forms of behavior that the Bible calls perversion.

  126. We should not be surprised when we see that in the world,

  127. though it is in the world and always before us,

  128. it ought not to have any place in our lives.

  129. To abstain from immorality suggests that we do not participate in the things that would lead in that direction.

  130. Somewhere along the way,

  131. instead of concentrating on pleasing God,

  132. we might begin thinking about pleasing ourselves.

  133. And when that happens,

  134. we begin to see things in the world that appear to answer

  135. the desire for our own pleasure,

  136. which falsely promises to satisfy our appetites.

  137. With approval of flesh

  138. and the encouragement of the enemy,

  139. we start down that slippery slope of perversion.

  140. So Paul says it's time to pump the brakes

  141. and do a rapid 180.

  142. Years ago, I remember coming across a commentary by Warren Wearsby,

  143. and he said something like this

  144. as he was describing this problem of a worldly attitude

  145. and a worldly walk by a believer.

  146. He said,

  147. Anything in the Christian's life

  148. that causes him to lose the enjoyment of the Father's love

  149. or his desire to do the Father's will

  150. must be avoided.

  151. I like that.

  152. Because there are some things that sometimes we do and say

  153. that, frankly, we know

  154. cause us to lose the enjoyment of the Father's love.

  155. And sometimes they cause us

  156. to leave the desire to do the Father's will.

  157. Well, you know that immorality has destroyed countless marriages

  158. and families and careers and churches and reputations.

  159. And for those who have managed to dabble in such things

  160. without actually being exposed,

  161. their lives are at best weak and ineffective,

  162. failing at the very core of Christian responsibility,

  163. which is to please God.

  164. Thankfully, there is a God

  165. who gets our attention,

  166. changes our hearts,

  167. and turns us around.

  168. That's great.

  169. But if we get involved in those things,

  170. we're going to be in trouble.

  171. And we're going to bring chaos

  172. in our lives and the lives of others.

  173. Positively, again,

  174. we are to maintain control.

  175. The believer should be marked by holiness and honor

  176. to provide what we need to live such lives.

  177. We're given the Holy Spirit.

  178. We are to be controlled by the Spirit.

  179. You probably are aware in Galatians chapter 5,

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  180. Paul talks about the fruit of the Spirit.

  181. The last one he mentions is self-control.

  182. How do those two work together?

  183. Well, on the one hand,

  184. we are to be controlled by the Spirit.

  185. On the other hand,

  186. we are equipped by the Holy Spirit

  187. to exercise control over ourselves.

  188. So it's the Holy Spirit who gives us the desire

  189. and the energy to be self-controlled

  190. to the point that we avoid,

  191. even flee from those things

  192. that you read about in the first eight verses.

  193. Always, the nature and work of the Holy Spirit

  194. is holiness.

  195. When we're under his control,

  196. we are moving in the direction of holiness.

  197. One author I came across some time ago said this,

  198. to go on living in impurity

  199. is a direct insult to the divine giver

  200. and a sin against the Holy Spirit

  201. who is the power unto holiness.

  202. He supplies not only the desire,

  203. but also the ability to live a life of purity.

  204. His indwelling puts an end to the pagan plea

  205. that man has no power to resist impure desires.

  206. For believers to go on living in immorality

  207. is to repudiate the gracious provision of God for holiness

  208. and invites his sure judgment as the avenger of sin.

  209. The way to escape is to fly to the giver

  210. and accept and cherish his gift.

  211. So, question,

  212. do we possess a passionate love set on pleasing God,

  213. or is there a passionate lust fixed on satisfying

  214. our carnal desires?

  215. Verse 6 always puzzled me a little bit.

  216. In the text, again, you heard from last week,

  217. that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this manner.

  218. I used to scratch my head and think,

  219. what are you talking about brother here?

  220. I thought this was talking about this individual.

  221. Well, it is true that maybe immorality occurred

  222. and broke up a family or something like that.

  223. I could see how that would hurt another brother.

  224. But it might be simpler than that.

  225. I think Zach hit on this last week.

  226. It goes something like this.

  227. We never sin in a vacuum.

  228. Our sin has a ripple effect on the body of Christ.

  229. When a brother or sister in Christ falls morally,

  230. the church is marked as hypocritical.

  231. The world looks at that,

  232. eh, they're all alike.

  233. Ministry is made more difficult.

  234. The enemy is given more ammunition.

  235. The credibility of Christ takes a hit.

  236. But also, the potential ministry of the person who sinned

  237. is marred or sometimes destroyed.

  238. And God will discipline that individual

  239. and possibly discipline the church

  240. depending on how they respond to the sin

  241. further impacting the work of Christ.

  242. It's a big deal

  243. not to walk in holiness.

  244. If we think we can play around with impurity

  245. while maintaining our walk with Christ,

  246. we really are deceiving ourselves.

  247. And if we blow this off as no big deal,

  248. we are reminded that

  249. to disregard the warning

  250. is not disregarding mere man,

  251. but it's disregarding God.

  252. God has given us this Holy Spirit

  253. to go toward impurity

  254. puts us at odds

  255. with the purpose of God

  256. to sanctify us

  257. and to conform us

  258. to the image of Christ.

  259. If we want to please God,

  260. it really does matter

  261. how we use our bodies.

  262. Check out

  263. Zach's sermon from last week.

  264. You'll be blessed

  265. and taught.

  266. Now let's move into

  267. what he says

  268. in verses 9 and 10

  269. and 11 and 12.

  270. Verse 9 and 10,

  271. he says,

  272. not only do we need to

  273. be careful

  274. how we live our lives

  275. in terms of our bodies,

  276. but also he's saying

  277. how we treat our brothers and sisters

  278. is important.

  279. If the first is the goal of holiness,

  280. the goal here is love.

  281. So again he says in verse 9,

  282. Now concerning brotherly love,

  283. you have no need

  284. for anyone to write to you,

  285. for you yourselves

  286. have been taught by God

  287. to love one another,

  288. for that indeed

  289. is what you are doing

  290. to all the brothers

  291. throughout Macedonia.

  292. But we urge you brothers

  293. to do this

  294. more and more.

  295. So abstaining from

  296. the selfish, sinful actions

  297. produced by a fallen world,

  298. believers are called

  299. to focus attention

  300. and efforts

  301. toward loving one another

  302. by the purest of motives

  303. and the best of conduct.

  304. Such a response

  305. is a strong outward testimony

  306. to the change in us

  307. due to the Spirit's working

  308. of regeneration

  309. and transformation.

  310. So if we're to please God,

  311. it does matter

  312. how we treat other people.

  313. And sometimes,

  314. we don't treat them

  315. all that nicely.

  316. This brotherly love

  317. is the supernatural love.

  318. We're basically selfish people.

  319. We love for other people.

  320. I'm sorry,

  321. love for other people

  322. does not come naturally.

  323. We want others

  324. to show love to us,

  325. but we're not so quick

  326. sometimes to love them.

  327. There's a selflessness

  328. that all of us have

  329. that we're thinking about

  330. how do they view me,

  331. what are they thinking about me,

  332. do they like me,

  333. you know,

  334. and it's like,

  335. just kind of forget that,

  336. please.

  337. It's about them,

  338. not really about us.

  339. Yes,

  340. but it's a tough one.

  341. But the Father,

  342. actually,

  343. it's interesting,

  344. the Trinity here

  345. has taught us

  346. how to love one another.

  347. When Paul says

  348. in the text,

  349. you have been taught

  350. by God

  351. to love one another,

  352. I'm scratching my head

  353. a little bit,

  354. okay,

  355. what does he mean by that?

  356. And this sort of

  357. came to mind.

  358. The Father taught us

  359. to love each other

  360. when he gave us

  361. his Son

  362. to die for us.

  363. That's really what

  364. John was saying

  365. in 1 John 4,

  366. 19.

  367. The Son taught us

  368. to love each other

  369. when he said

  370. in John

    John 13:34

  371. chapter 13,

  372. verse 34,

  373. a new commandment

  374. I give you

  375. that you love

  376. one another.

  377. The Holy Spirit

  378. taught us

  379. to love each other.

  380. Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5:5

  381. verse 5,

  382. Paul says,

  383. God's love

  384. has been poured

  385. into our hearts

  386. through the Holy Spirit

  387. who has been given

  388. to us.

  389. So,

  390. God has been teaching us

  391. all along,

  392. the whole Trinity

  393. has been teaching us

  394. all along

  395. to love one another.

  396. If we fail

  397. or refuse

  398. to love one another,

  399. we're not pleasing God

  400. and frankly,

  401. we're not without excuse.

  402. We have been given

  403. both the example

  404. and the power

  405. to love one another.

  406. This is a supernatural love.

  407. I've watched

  408. over the years

  409. a lot of Christians

  410. take each other apart.

  411. It's not pretty

  412. and it's hard

  413. in churches.

  414. It's anything

  415. but love.

  416. One of the greatest

  417. demonstrations

  418. of the power

  419. of God

  420. and the reality

  421. of salvation

  422. in Christ

  423. is selfless love

  424. of one person

  425. to another.

  426. I think that's

  427. one of the reasons

  428. why we were told

  429. in the Bible

  430. to see how they

  431. love one another

  432. was a big deal

  433. in the early church.

  434. When Paul

  435. told the Ephesians

  436. men,

  437. husbands,

  438. love your wives

  439. as Christ loved

  440. the church

  441. and gave himself

  442. up for her,

  443. that was in the context

  444. of one of the most

  445. amazing descriptions

  446. of the love of God

  447. toward sinners

  448. that you will ever read.

  449. Christ is the example.

  450. The commandment

  451. has been given

  452. without qualification

  453. in that text.

  454. God has been given

  455. to us.

  456. And such a seeming

  457. impossible love

  458. has been made possible

  459. by the presence

  460. and the power

  461. of the Holy Spirit.

  462. He's poured out

  463. his love upon us.

  464. It's a supernatural love.

  465. But it's also

  466. a developing love.

  467. The acknowledgement

  468. here is made by Paul

  469. that the Thessalonians

  470. were doing a good job

  471. with this.

  472. But their generosity

  473. and their acts

  474. of mercy,

  475. their selfless

  476. service throughout Macedonia

  477. had not gone unnoticed

  478. by Paul,

  479. nor had it gone noticed

  480. to those who'd received it.

  481. However,

  482. in everything we do

  483. in our walk with Christ,

  484. there's always room

  485. for improvement.

  486. We don't graduate

  487. from that

  488. until we go to heaven.

  489. We just keep on

  490. more and more.

  491. However,

  492. I guess I could say it this way.

  493. It's impossible

  494. to overdo

  495. loving one another.

  496. I read in a commentary

  497. somewhere,

  498. and I forgot to

  499. note where it came from.

  500. I hate it when that happens.

  501. I got this great quote,

  502. and I don't know

  503. who to give it to,

  504. but there is an endless

  505. source of divine energy

  506. available for Christian living.

  507. Paul was not satisfied

  508. until he

  509. and those he worked with

  510. had it all.

  511. Some might say,

  512. but you have no idea

  513. what I must put up with.

  514. You would not believe

  515. the selfless,

  516. arrogant,

  517. self-righteous,

  518. and they go,

  519. you know,

  520. eh,

  521. it happens.

  522. But if God gave the command

  523. to love one another,

  524. and he gave us the capacity

  525. to love one another,

  526. it seems to me

  527. that there's only one thing missing,

  528. our obedience

  529. to love one another.

  530. No excuses,

  531. no buts,

  532. just do it.

  533. And we can,

  534. really.

  535. We have the Spirit of God.

  536. And in fact,

  537. in Peter's letter,

  538. he says this,

  539. just,

  540. I'm going to read this slow,

  541. kind of let it sink in.

  542. Having purified your souls

  543. by your obedience

  544. to the truth

  545. for a sincere brotherly love,

  546. love one another earnestly

  547. from a pure heart.

  548. Since you have been born again,

  549. not of perishable seed,

  550. but of imperishable,

  551. through the living

  552. and abiding word of God.

  553. When God saved us,

  554. remember,

  555. he poured his love into us

  556. so that now we have the capacity

  557. to pour out that love

  558. to one another.

  559. It's there.

  560. So when we say,

  561. I don't know,

  562. I can't love that person,

  563. maybe we need to re-examine that.

  564. Yeah, you can.

  565. So the goals so far

  566. in pleasing God

  567. have been holiness,

  568. verses 1 through 8,

  569. and love,

  570. verses 9 and 10.

  571. The final one

  572. that Paul deals with here

  573. is respect.

  574. And he sets the context here

  575. that it's important

  576. not only how we use our bodies

  577. and how we treat one another,

  578. our brothers and sisters in Christ,

  579. but how we conduct our business.

  580. So here the goal is respect.

  581. Here are the verses.

  582. I'm going to pick up on verse 10

  583. running into verse 11.

  584. We urge you, brothers,

  585. do this more and more,

  586. and to aspire

  587. to live quietly,

  588. to mind your own affairs,

  589. to work with your hands

  590. as we instructed you,

  591. so that you may walk properly

  592. before outsiders

  593. and be dependent

  594. on no one.

  595. ambition.

  596. So ambition

  597. of a quiet life

  598. he addresses first.

  599. Now that may seem

  600. a little bit paradoxical.

  601. It's kind of interesting

  602. how Paul says it.

  603. Strive eagerly

  604. and zealously

  605. to be quiet.

  606. Kind of weird,

  607. you know.

  608. But

  609. he said something similar

  610. to Timothy

  611. when he said

  612. that you may lead

  613. a peaceful and quiet life,

  614. godly and dignified

  615. in every way.

  616. So,

  617. regardless of your personality,

  618. there is a responsibility

  619. to live a quiet life.

  620. That's an ambition.

  621. Let's see if we can figure out

  622. what that means.

  623. The word quiet

  624. probably carries

  625. the idea

  626. of peace of mind.

  627. It's a striving

  628. to have a balanced,

  629. tranquil perspective

  630. in life.

  631. It's not all hyper,

  632. crazy,

  633. or look at me,

  634. or always stirring the pot.

  635. It's not that.

  636. It's living in quiet confidence

  637. of God's providence,

  638. trusting him

  639. through all kinds

  640. of circumstances,

  641. all kinds of situations,

  642. both pleasant

  643. and difficult.

  644. That says something

  645. about those around us.

  646. It gains

  647. their respect.

  648. It speaks volumes

  649. about our great God.

  650. And such a life

  651. pleases God.

  652. Closely connected

  653. to this ambition

  654. of a quiet life

  655. is an ambition

  656. of a private life.

  657. We need to live lives

  658. that give attention

  659. to our own business

  660. and not be pressing in

  661. on everyone else's business.

  662. It's long been a problem

  663. among believers

  664. to be over-interested

  665. in other people's affairs

  666. while failing to attend

  667. to our own.

  668. Paul would later

  669. have to tell

  670. the Thessalonians

  671. in his second letter

  672. in chapter 3 this,

  673. For we hear

  674. that some among you

  675. walk in idleness,

  676. not busy at work,

  677. but busy bodies.

  678. Now such persons

  679. are we command

  680. and encourage

  681. in the Lord Jesus

  682. to do their work

  683. quietly

  684. and to earn

  685. their own living.

  686. Pastor Mike

  687. will get to

  688. the idea

  689. of something

  690. that was happening

  691. in Thessalonica,

  692. but apparently

  693. people were waiting

  694. for Jesus to come.

  695. And they're excited

  696. about Jesus to come.

  697. Is that a good thing?

  698. Sure.

  699. But they were so excited

  700. and so anticipating

  701. that return

  702. that they quit working.

  703. And then when they quit

  704. working,

  705. they run short

  706. on things.

  707. And then when they run

  708. short on things,

  709. they start depending

  710. on somebody else

  711. to take care of them

  712. while they're

  713. righteously waiting.

  714. And Paul says,

  715. no,

  716. don't do that.

  717. You have a responsibility

  718. to have a quiet life

  719. and a private life,

  720. and we'll get to it

  721. in a minute,

  722. productive life.

  723. That's the call.

  724. Well,

  725. so,

  726. he said,

  727. I mean,

  728. again,

  729. this was a problem

  730. in the first century.

  731. Paul attested to Timothy,

  732. besides that,

  733. you learn to be idlers

  734. going about

  735. from house to house,

  736. and not only idlers,

  737. but also gossips

  738. and busybodies

  739. saying what they should not.

  740. That's a problem.

  741. So,

  742. if you would please God,

  743. then if we would please God,

  744. we need to take care

  745. how we conduct our business.

  746. Paul continues to make the case

  747. that if we would be respected,

  748. we should also make it

  749. our ambition

  750. to be that of a productive life.

  751. Now,

  752. we ought not to be afraid

  753. to work with our hands.

  754. The Greeks believed

  755. that free men

  756. should never stoop

  757. to the level of manual labor.

  758. There was a slave for that.

  759. So,

  760. you don't need to do that.

  761. That's what they would say.

  762. But the attitude

  763. is inconsistent

  764. with true Christianity.

  765. There's no inconsistency

  766. between holy living

  767. and honest work.

  768. By so living to please God

  769. in what we do,

  770. we will gain the respect

  771. of a watching world,

  772. and we will gain

  773. a dignified independence.

  774. It's kind of weird.

  775. Looking back over my life,

  776. I'm not sure anybody

  777. was enamored by sermons

  778. I preached,

  779. but a couple times,

  780. and this, by the way,

  781. was done with the wrong attitude,

  782. but we were in a church

  783. for a while

  784. that there really wasn't,

  785. there wasn't paid people

  786. to help clean

  787. and so forth.

  788. And so people would clean

  789. on a scheduled basis,

  790. you know,

  791. and I would go in

  792. really early

  793. on a Sunday morning

  794. and work on the message

  795. and so forth,

  796. and then I'd kind of

  797. get my heart ready

  798. for the day.

  799. And a few times,

  800. I'd go in

  801. and realize that

  802. the volunteer person

  803. on the list

  804. didn't come in

  805. and clean the church.

  806. Sermon laid aside,

  807. time to clean the church.

  808. And a couple of times,

  809. I hadn't finished yet

  810. when somebody came in

  811. and I was vacuuming

  812. or cleaning the bathroom

  813. or something.

  814. It probably made more impact

  815. on them spiritually

  816. than the sermon

  817. I preached that day.

  818. And they said,

  819. what is wrong

  820. with this guy?

  821. Oh, well,

  822. I guess it's good

  823. that he's doing that.

  824. And I, again,

  825. I was like irritated

  826. that people didn't do it,

  827. but I think what happened

  828. was that they said,

  829. oh, this guy,

  830. he's doing the right thing here.

  831. He's,

  832. that's good to see that.

  833. And it does make a difference

  834. when we demonstrate

  835. that we're not afraid to work

  836. and that we pitch in

  837. and help.

  838. Paul is saying that

  839. to a certain extent.

  840. We need not be dependent

  841. on other people

  842. for our basic needs.

  843. And all this kind of works

  844. around that idea of love.

  845. If we love each other,

  846. we're not going to be

  847. messing around with immorality.

  848. If we love each other,

  849. we're going to be doing

  850. our own,

  851. doing the right thing

  852. by taking care

  853. of our own needs,

  854. by living a quiet life,

  855. by not stirring up things.

  856. All that's around

  857. the idea of love

  858. that he centers on,

  859. love your brothers

  860. and sisters in Christ.

  861. Paul wrote to the Ephesians

  862. about slaves,

  863. about bond servants.

  864. He said,

  865. bond servants,

  866. obey your earthly masters

  867. with fear and trembling,

  868. with a sincere heart,

  869. as you would Christ.

  870. Not by way of eye service,

  871. as people pleasers,

  872. but as bond servants

  873. of Christ,

  874. doing the will of God

  875. from the heart,

  876. rendering service

  877. with a good will

  878. as to the Lord

  879. and not to man.

  880. So when we're serving

  881. other people,

  882. when we're doing honest work,

  883. those kinds of things,

  884. it's not just doing that,

  885. it's as to Christ,

  886. as to the Lord.

  887. That's the kind of service

  888. that we're supposed to do.

  889. Such ambition,

  890. men pleases the Lord

  891. and it gets the attention

  892. of a watching world.

  893. You've probably heard

  894. this little poem.

  895. You are writing a gospel,

  896. a chapter each day,

  897. by the deeds that you do

  898. and the words that you say.

  899. Men read what you write,

  900. distorted or true.

  901. So,

  902. what is the gospel

  903. according to you?

  904. Oh, that we would set

  905. our desires on pleasing God.

  906. Pleasing God

  907. is not a checklist activity

  908. that can be completed

  909. and considered accomplished.

  910. It's an ongoing responsibility

  911. that every believer carries.

  912. And it's inclusive,

  913. involving our personal lives,

  914. involving our relationships

  915. with other people,

  916. and particularly

  917. in the body of Christ,

  918. as well as our interaction

  919. with our community.

  920. So,

  921. we are to walk in purity

  922. and respond in love

  923. and gain respect

  924. from those

  925. with whom we live

  926. and work.

  927. And when that's true,

  928. Paul says,

  929. God is pleased.

  930. And when we fail

  931. at those things,

  932. we fail to please God.

  933. And when we act

  934. in impure ways,

  935. we are not loving

  936. one another.

  937. We are self-absorbed.

  938. And when we fail

  939. to respect others

  940. by not living

  941. a quiet,

  942. productive life,

  943. we're not loving

  944. one another.

  945. We're depending on others

  946. to do for us

  947. what we should be doing

  948. for ourselves

  949. and others.

  950. Sometimes when the Scriptures

  951. take us in a direction

  952. where we're called

  953. to look at ourselves

  954. and make some corrections,

  955. we stumble.

  956. We might want to make

  957. those corrections,

  958. but we either believe

  959. that we are so far off

  960. the path of righteousness

  961. that we can never

  962. find our way back,

  963. or we believe

  964. we're just too weak

  965. to make the return journey.

  966. In either case,

  967. we are thinking

  968. that if we have failed

  969. to please God

  970. at that point in our lives,

  971. we will never be able

  972. to please Him.

  973. That's not true.

  974. There's a way back.

  975. There's hope,

  976. and there's help

  977. in the Lord.

  978. We confess our failures.

  979. We trust Him

  980. to cleanse us,

  981. and He will.

  982. And then we start

  983. walking in holiness

  984. and love and respect.

  985. He promises

  986. to walk with us.

  987. He promises

  988. to provide us

  989. with protection

  990. and grace,

  991. with power

  992. and provision.

  993. And in the process,

  994. God will be pleased,

  995. and we will gain respect

  996. from a watching world,

  997. and the best part of it

  998. is God will be glorified

  999. in all of that.

  1000. So,

  1001. God will someday,

  1002. for all believers,

  1003. sanctify us completely.

  1004. He will someday

  1005. present us blameless

  1006. before Him

  1007. with exceeding joy.

1008. And how do I know that?

  1009. Because

  1010. He who calls me

  1011. is faithful.

  1012. What does that mean?

  1013. It means

1014. He will surely do it.

  1015. And that's the promise

  1016. that Paul recorded

1017. at the end of this letter

  1018. in chapter 5,

  1019. verses 23 and 24

  1020. that you'll hear about

  1021. before too many weeks.

  1022. And that's God's promise

  1023. to us as well.

  1024. Let's pray.

  1025. Father,

  1026. thank You

  1027. for Your

  1028. kind grace

  1029. as You're working

  1030. in our lives.

  1031. We're flawed people,

  1032. but thank You

  1033. that You are

  1034. a faithful God

  1035. and a forgiving God

  1036. and a merciful God.

  1037. and so our

  1038. hope is in You,

1039. our trust is in You.

  1040. Thank You

  1041. that even if we're

  1042. really struggling

1043. and some of these things

  1044. have us

  1045. pinned down,

  1046. thank You

  1047. that by Your Spirit,

  1048. through Your Word,

  1049. with Your grace,

  1050. You're able to

  1051. turn us around

  1052. and make us

  1053. productive

  1054. and pleasing to You

  1055. all for Your glory.

1056. May You make that happen

  1057. in us today.

  1058. If we're doing

  1059. reasonably well,

  1060. may we,

  1061. with Paul's words,

  1062. keep on doing it,

  1063. keep on

  1064. more and more

  1065. loving one another,

  1066. maintaining a purity

1067. as we live our lives

  1068. in this world,

  1069. and serving,

  1070. working,

  1071. to be respected

  1072. by the community

  1073. and again,

  1074. pleasing to You.

  1075. Thank You

  1076. for this congregation.

  1077. Thank You

  1078. for Your kindness

  1079. that You've poured out

  1080. upon us.

  1081. Thank You

  1082. for Your mercies.

  1083. May we be

  1084. a light

  1085. to a watching world

1086. for the glory of Christ.

1087. In His name we pray.

  1088. Amen.
