  1. Amen. You may be seated.

  2. Kids, you're excused to your King's Kids class.

  3. !

  4. But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, sisters, about those who are asleep, Christians

  5. who have died before the coming of Jesus.

  6. That you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.

  7. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring

  8. with Him those who have fallen asleep.

  9. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left

  10. until the coming of the Lord, will not proceed those who have fallen asleep.

  11. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an

  12. archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.

  13. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

  14. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds

  15. to meet the Lord in the air.

  16. And so we will always be with the Lord.

  17. Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

  18. May God bless the hearing of His word.

  19. There is a very good chance that we will be attending each other's funerals.

  20. Have you ever thought about that?

  21. You might be thinking now, Mike, you're just considering your own mortality given in your

  22. bike accident recently.

  23. Well, there's some of that.

  24. But part of together following Jesus, we'll be walking through death together.

  25. When a fellow Christian dies, how must we respond?

  26. Imagine a brother in Christ, Stan, from our church who dies, widowing his wife, Charlotte,

  27. of 50 plus years.

  28. She too is a Christian who loves the Lord deeply, but his death has left her grieving.

  29. Grief is the sting of someone's absence.

  30. You attend Stan's funeral here in the sanctuary.

  31. And after the funeral, you go downstairs to the fellowship hall for a luncheon.

  32. There's a lack of chairs.

  33. So you go into the side room to find some chairs.

  34. And there you find Charlotte.

  35. You're alone with her.

  36. She's quietly weeping.

  37. What do you do?

  38. What do you say?

  39. Oops.

  40. So sorry.

  41. And you take your leave.

  42. Or you nod and you say, Stan will be missed.

  43. You grab some chairs.

  44. You put your hand on Charlotte's shoulder and you say, God is working all things out for the good.

  45. Now I've got to grab these chairs.

  46. Or maybe you say something like this.

  47. You know, Charlotte, Stan is in a better place.

  48. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

  49. 2 Corinthians 5.8.

  50. Which is true.

  51. What would you do if you encountered a newly minted widow in a side room after her husband's funeral?

  52. The apostle Paul, in writing 1 Thessalonians, is writing a fledgling church.

  53. They had just been established.

  54. And this fledgling church is also a church in grieving.

  55. We pick it up in verse 13.

  56. Brothers, sisters, about those who are asleep.

  57. About those Christians who were church members of yours who have died.

  58. They've been to the funeral services of a number of their members.

  59. And they've been thrown by it.

  60. A number of their church members have died.

  61. They're grieving.

  62. They've been rattled.

  63. Because they don't know how to make sense of their fellow Christians who have died in Christ's return.

  64. They don't have the information.

  65. They're lacking information.

  66. So Paul attends to it head on.

  67. In verses 13 through 18, he addresses this in three moves.

  68. The first move is in verse 13.

  69. He addresses their hopelessly uninformed situation.

  70. Hopelessly uninformed.

  71. And then the second move, he gives hopeful instruction.

  72. It's going to be the bulk of the sermon.

  73. And then the third move, he closes with a hope-spreading exhortation.

  74. Now here's the claim of this passage.

  75. When fellow Christians die, we encourage one another with the hope of Christ's return.

  76. Not just they're in the presence of the Lord.

  77. But we go beyond that by pointing people, grieving brothers and sisters in Christ,

  78. to what will happen when Jesus comes back.

  79. So, let's look at this first move where Paul addresses these hopelessly uninformed Christians in verse 13.

  80. And just to remind you, Paul loves this church.

  81. If you just flip back in your Bibles to chapter 2, verses 19 and 20,

  82. listen to what he says of this church.

  83. For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming?

  84. Is it not you?

  85. For you are our glory and joy.

  86. Now those are words of affection, of delight.

  87. And this church came into being under very difficult circumstances.

  88. In fact, if you want to read about it, you can read about it at the beginning of Acts 17,

  89. where Paul, Silas, and Timothy, they got a split Philippi.

  90. They show up in Thessalonica.

  91. They start preaching Christ, and there is this response.

  92. But there's also a response, not of faith and repentance, but of violence,

  93. and of things getting out of hand in Thessalonica.

  94. I mean, just read.

  95. You can read about the thoroughness of their conversion,

  96. of those who heard the gospel in chapter 1, verses 9 and 10.

  97. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you,

  98. and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,

  99. and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus,

  100. who delivers us from the wrath to come.

  101. Not only were they delivered from their sin,

  102. they were looking forward to Christ's return.

  103. These Christians were thoroughly, thoroughly converted.

  104. And then, because things started getting out of hand,

  105. Paul, Silas, and Timothy, they had to cut out of Thessalonica under the cover of night.

  106. Now, could you imagine how this affected Paul?

  107. He leaves this fledgling church in the midst of very difficult circumstances.

  108. And so you can imagine, as the weeks and the months are going by,

  109. he's just wondering, what is going on in Thessalonica?

  110. What's happening in this church?

  111. No word.

  112. So what Paul eventually does, you can see it in chapter 3, verses 1 and 2.

  113. Paul sends Timothy back to the church in Thessalonica to see what's going on.

  114. And then Timothy brings back a report.

  115. And to the great relief of everybody,

  116. he comes back with a very encouraging report.

  117. Chapter 3, verses 6 through 9.

  118. You want to get a taste of what's going on?

  119. Look at chapter 4, verse 1.

  120. Finally then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus,

  121. that as you receive from us how you ought to walk and to please God,

  122. just as you are doing,

  123. that you do so more and more.

  124. The only reason why he knew that is Timothy's report.

  125. That they are following Jesus together.

  126. Look at chapter 4, verse 9.

  127. Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for anyone to write you,

  128. for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,

  129. for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia.

  130. They are loving each other.

  131. They are walking by faith.

  132. And Paul is like, excel still more, brothers and sisters.

  133. Press in.

  134. Keep going.

  135. They seem to be doing really well.

  136. In chapter 5, verses 1-2.

  137. Now concerning the times and the seasons of Christ's return,

  138. brothers and sisters, you have no need to have anything written to you,

  139. for you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord,

  140. the coming of Christ, will come like a thief in the night.

  141. So they're well instructed.

  142. Look at verse 11 of chapter 5.

  143. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up,

  144. just as you are doing.

  145. They're already talking to each other about the return of Christ.

  146. This would have been a very encouraging report.

  147. But this church was lacking something.

  148. You pick up on it.

  149. In chapter 3, verse 10.

  150. Paul is praying for them,

  151. as we pray most earnestly night and day,

  152. that wait, we may see you face to face,

  153. and supply what is lacking in your faith.

  154. Despite all these good things going on,

  155. Paul was aware that they were missing something.

  156. They were missing some information.

  157. And what was that information?

  158. They knew what Christ had done,

  159. death, resurrection.

  160. They knew that Christ was coming back.

  161. But given these recent deaths of their fellow Christians,

  162. something got exposed in them.

  163. They did not know what to think

  164. about what would happen to these Christians

  165. who had died before Christ's return.

  166. What's going to happen?

  167. They were, verse 13, uninformed.

  168. Do you see that?

  169. But we do not want you to be uninformed,

  170. brothers and sisters.

  171. That's not being misled.

  172. That's not being mistaught.

  173. That is their missing information

  174. about those who are asleep.

  175. That little phrase, asleep,

  176. shows up a few times in this passage.

  177. We see it in verse 13,

  178. that you may not grieve as others do

  179. over those who are asleep.

  180. Look at verse 14.

  181. It shows up again.

  182. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again,

  183. even so, through Jesus,

  184. God will bring with him

  185. those who have, say it, fallen asleep.

  186. Look at verse 15.

  187. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord,

  188. that we who are alive,

  189. who are left until the coming of the Lord,

  190. will not precede those who have, say it, fallen asleep.

  191. So those who have fallen asleep, who are they?

  192. Well, we're told in verse 16,

  193. Scripture interprets Scripture, right?

  194. Look at verse 16.

  195. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven

  196. with a cry of command,

  197. with the voice of the archangel,

  198. and with the sound of the trumpet of God,

  199. and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  200. Those who have fallen asleep

  201. are the dead in Christ.

  202. Those Christians who have died

  203. before the coming of the Lord,

  204. that's those who have fallen asleep.

  205. So Paul not only addresses this issue,

  206. what about those who have fallen asleep?

  207. He'll get there in a second,

  208. but he also addresses the effect,

  209. the effect on this Thessalonian church

  210. of not knowing this information.

  211. He doesn't want them to grieve

  212. like those who do not have hope,

  213. like non-Christians who do not have hope

  214. in the face of death.

  215. He wants to put hope in their hearts.

  216. He doesn't want them to get pulled away

  217. in their hopelessness of not knowing

  218. what will happen to their Christian brothers and sisters

  219. who have died.

  220. You see, their lack of knowing

  221. what would happen to them

  222. was tempting them to a hopelessness.

  223. They were missing information.

  224. They were uninformed,

  225. and it was having an unhealthy effect.

  226. They were being tempted to hopelessness.

  227. Grief is the sting of someone's absence,

  228. and it can take over.

  229. When grief is not tempered by faith,

  230. it can take over.

  231. It can rule you.

  232. And so Paul here is not forbidding grief.

  233. What Paul is doing is he's addressing

  234. an uninformed grief

  235. that results in hopelessness.

  236. So the first move we see here

  237. is the Apostle Paul

  238. addressing these hopelessly uninformed Christians.

  239. He knows their situation.

  240. He's opening their hearts

  241. to receive what he's about to tell them.

  242. And that's the second move.

  243. Paul gives them hopeful instruction.

  244. He just doesn't let them

  245. kind of just wallow in the mire of not knowing.

  246. He addresses their situation

  247. with hopeful instruction.

  248. Has anybody seen a video?

  249. This is point two.

  250. Hopeful instruction.

  251. Has anybody seen a video

  252. of like a hurricane

  253. or a tornado

  254. that sweeps in

  255. and it just picks up everything around it

  256. and hurls it wherever it may go?

  257. Just imagine like a trampoline in Oklahoma

  258. and a tornado.

  259. It just kind of scoops that baby up

  260. and hurls it.

  261. You know what I'm talking about?

  262. Have you seen those videos?

  263. Grief can be like a hurricane.

  264. Grief can be like a tornado.

  265. It can just pick you up and hurl you.

  266. It can take over.

  267. And that's why

  268. if you have

  269. trampoline in Oklahoma

  270. you've got to anchor it down.

  271. And that's why

  272. the apostle Paul

  273. in verses 14 through 17

  274. gives very hopeful instruction

  275. that is anchoring

  276. this grief stricken church

  277. into God's word.

  278. and he does this

  279. in three ways.

  280. The first way

  281. he anchors

  282. this grieving church

  283. with hopeful instruction

  284. is in verse 14.

  285. For since we believe

  286. that Jesus died

  287. and rose again

  288. even so

  289. through Jesus

  290. God will bring

  291. with him

  292. those who have fallen asleep.

  293. What we have here

  294. is called a gospel promise.

  295. It's a since then argument.

  296. Since this is true

  297. then this is true.

  298. Let me give you an example.

  299. Since Jordan Love

  300. is better than Aaron Rodgers

  301. then

  302. the Packers beat the Steelers.

  303. Do I have an amen?

  304. It's a since then argument.

  305. Here's the since then argument

  306. in verse 14.

  307. Since Jesus

  308. died and rose.

  309. Gospel.

  310. Since that's true

  311. in everything that comes with it too

  312. like his return

  313. since Jesus died

  314. and rose

  315. and will return someday

  316. and we believe that to be true

  317. since that's true

  318. then

  319. then in verse 14

  320. even so

  321. through Jesus

  322. God will bring with him

  323. those who have fallen asleep.

  324. Since we believe

  325. that Jesus rose from the dead

  326. and he's going to return

  327. then we also believe

  328. that when Jesus returns

  329. he's going to bring back with him

  330. those whom he died

  331. and rose for.

  332. When he returns

  333. just as we believe the gospel

  334. we believe this promise

  335. that he's bringing these people

  336. back with him.

  337. These are those who have died

  338. and are now in God's presence.

  339. They are disembodied souls

  340. in the very presence

  341. of the Lord Jesus.

  342. This is what the apostle Paul

  343. talks about in 2 Corinthians 5

  344. when he talks about

  345. being absent from the body

  346. but being in the presence of the Lord

  347. or in Philippians chapter 1

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  348. where he says

  349. you know what would be better for me

  350. if I were absent

  351. you know away from my body

  352. in the presence of the Lord.

  353. It's this idea

  354. that when a Christian dies

  355. their soul goes to be

  356. in the presence of the Lord.

  357. These disembodied souls

  358. are in the presence of the Lord now

  359. and when Jesus returns

  360. he's bringing them back with him.

  361. And so what Paul is doing here

  362. is he's anchoring grief

  363. into God's truth

  364. a gospel promise.

  365. Here's another way to think about it.

  366. These Thessalonians are like

  367. what's going to happen

  368. to our brothers and sisters in Christ

  369. who have died when Jesus returns?

  370. Paul's like

  371. it's not like Jesus will forget

  372. to bring those whom he's died

  373. and raised him for.

  374. Those whom fallen asleep

  375. he's bringing them back with him.

  376. And so this

  377. this first

  378. hopeful piece

  379. of hopeful instruction

  380. is that

  381. the Apostle Paul

  382. God

  383. is grounding grief

  384. it's anchoring grief

  385. in this gospel promise.

  386. The second

  387. anchor

  388. is in verse 15.

  389. And it comes

  390. by way of a word

  391. from the Lord.

  392. For this we declare to you

  393. by a word

  394. from the Lord.

  395. Now

  396. it's possible

  397. that this reference

  398. to a word

  399. from the Lord

  400. could be a reference

  401. to something that Jesus said

  402. that we

  403. we have no record of.

  404. It's possible

  405. that's the case.

  406. But I think

  407. it's

  408. it's much more likely

  409. that what Paul

  410. is referring to

  411. is a prophetic word

  412. that the risen Christ

  413. spoke to him

  414. or Silas

  415. another prophet

  416. New Testament prophet.

  417. And it has to do

  418. with the

  419. sequencing

  420. the procedural

  421. sequencing

  422. of Christ's return

  423. and those who have died.

  424. We see it in verse 15.

  425. for this we declare

  426. to you

  427. by a word

  428. from the Lord

  429. that we

  430. who are alive

  431. who are left

  432. until the coming

  433. of the Lord

  434. in other words

  435. those who will be alive

  436. when Christ returns

  437. those of us

  438. who will see Jesus

  439. upon his return

  440. on earth

  441. we will not

  442. precede

  443. those who have

  444. fallen asleep.

  445. We will not

  446. go before

  447. in procedural

  448. sequence

  449. those who have

  450. died in Christ

  451. before his return.

  452. And so what we're

  453. being told here

  454. this word

  455. from the Lord

  456. is

  457. Paul saying

  458. the risen Lord

  459. told me

  460. apostolic authority

  461. we're to interpret

  462. this with

  463. Christ's full

  464. authoritative word

  465. that

  466. when Christ

  467. returns

  468. those of us

  469. who are alive

  470. at his coming

  471. we're not going

  472. to go before

  473. those who have

  474. died before

  475. his coming.

  476. It's a very

  477. simple

  478. simple point

  479. and the

  480. specificity of it

  481. the detail of it

  482. the texture of it

  483. it anchors us

  484. in it.

  485. It's truth

  486. for us

  487. to anchor

  488. our hearts

  489. when we are

  490. affected by the

  491. grief of someone

  492. who has died

  493. a Christian

  494. who has died

  495. this word

  496. of the Lord

  497. Paul's talking

  498. about two groups

  499. of Christians

  500. those who are

  501. alive

  502. who are left

  503. until the coming

  504. of Christ

  505. and those who

  506. have fallen asleep

  507. and he's

  508. saying here

  509. there's

  510. a sequence

  511. when Christ

  512. comes back

  513. there's a procedure

  514. now I want to

  515. point out too

  516. in 1 Corinthians

  517. 15

  518. the parallel

  519. passage

  520. to this passage

  521. in your New

  522. Testament

  523. Paul says this

  524. in verse 51

  525. he says

  526. behold

  527. I tell you

  528. a mystery

  529. that's

  530. revelation

  531. talk

  532. that is

  533. making

  534. something

  535. known

  536. that has

  537. been

  538. kind of

  539. not revealed

  540. this is prophetic

  541. in that sense

  542. behold I tell you

  543. a mystery

  544. we shall not all

  545. sleep but we shall

  546. all be changed

  547. in a moment

  548. in the twinkling

  549. of an eye

  550. the last trumpet

  551. for the trumpet

  552. will sound

  553. and the dead

  554. will be raised

  555. imperishable

  556. and we

  557. who are alive

  558. at the coming

  559. of Christ

  560. shall be changed

  561. and so what we

  562. have here

  563. this word

  564. of the Lord

  565. is the

  566. second

  567. anchor

  568. by which

  569. we're being

  570. anchored to truth

  571. which gives us

  572. hope

  573. the third

  574. anchor

  575. is in

  576. verses

  577. 16

  578. and 17

  579. it's the

  580. third anchor

  581. of this hopeful

  582. instruction

  583. and it's

  584. actually an

  585. expansion

  586. of verse

  587. 15

  588. but it

  589. expands it

  590. by way

  591. of description

  592. it expands

  593. it by way

  594. of prophetic

  595. vision

  596. it helps

  597. you to

  598. see

  599. something

  600. check it

  601. out

  602. for the

  603. Lord himself

  604. will descend

  605. I hope

  606. that you're

  607. seeing that

  608. in your mind

  609. for the

  610. Lord himself

  611. will descend

  612. from heaven

  613. with a cry

  614. of command

  615. with the

  616. voice of

  617. an archangel

  618. and with

  619. the sound

  620. of the

  621. trumpet

  622. of God

  623. when Jesus

  624. comes back

  625. it's going

  626. to be

  627. a cacophony

  628. it's going

  629. to be

  630. noisy

  631. and you

  632. might read

  633. three things

  634. there

  635. cry of

  636. command

  637. voice of

  638. an archangel

  639. sound of

  640. the trumpet

  641. but there's

  642. actually

  643. two things

  644. the cry

  645. of command

  646. is the

  647. voice

  648. of the

  649. archangel

  650. in Matthew

  651. 24

  652. 31

  653. when Jesus

  654. talks about

  655. his return

  656. when he

  657. comes back

  658. all of his

  659. angels are

  660. going to be

  661. sent out

  662. to the

  663. four winds

  664. of the

  665. earth

  666. to gather

  667. all of

  668. his blood

  669. bought

  670. and that

  671. sending forth

  672. of angels

  673. tied to this

  674. passage

  675. will go by

  676. way of a

  677. cry of

  678. command

  679. from an

  680. archangel

  681. the only

  682. archangel

  683. named

  684. in your

  685. bible

  686. is

  687. Michael

  688. doesn't

  689. mean he's

  690. the only

  691. archangel

  692. but he's

  693. referenced

  694. in Jude

  695. 9

  696. something is

  697. going to

  698. happen

  699. when Jesus

  700. comes back

  701. there is

  702. going to

  703. be loud

  704. noise

  705. it's

  706. going to

  707. be an

  708. announcement

  709. a cry

  710. of command

  711. and there's

  712. going to

  713. be the

  714. trumpet

  715. of God

  716. that blares

  717. not just

  718. announcing

  719. Christ's

  720. return

  721. but announcing

  722. the resurrection

  723. of the dead

  724. it's going

  725. to be a

  726. holy

  727. cacophony

  728. of noise

  729. and you

  730. are to

  731. be

  732. visualizing

  733. this

  734. you

  735. this is a

  736. sensory

  737. experience

  738. right now

  739. we're to

  740. be anticipating

  741. this

  742. and then we

  743. learn

  744. of the

  745. order

  746. of the

  747. sequence

  748. and the

  749. dead in

  750. Christ

  751. will rise

  752. first

  753. the

  754. disembodied

  755. souls

  756. coming back

  757. with Christ

  758. they

  759. will be

  760. reunited

  761. with a

  762. resurrection

  763. body

  764. that will

  765. happen

  766. first

  767. and then

  768. verse 17

  769. then

  770. we who

  771. are alive

  772. who are left

  773. the same

  774. language as in

  775. verse 15

  776. we who are

  777. alive who are

  778. left

  779. will be

  780. caught up

  781. together

  782. will be

  783. raptured

  784. will be

  785. raptured

  786. with them

  787. those who

  788. have received

  789. resurrection

  790. bodies

  791. who died

  792. before the

  793. coming of

  794. the Lord

  795. will be

  796. raptured

  797. with them

  798. in the

  799. clouds

  800. just as

  801. Jesus

  802. went up

  803. Acts 1

  804. 9

  805. he's going

  806. to come

  807. back on

  808. the clouds

  809. the son

  810. of man

  811. returning

  812. in glory

  813. to meet

  814. the Lord

  815. in the

  816. air

  817. here's what

  818. this last

  819. prophetic

  820. vision

  821. adds

  822. to all

  823. of these

  824. anchors

  825. it's a

  826. picture

  827. of a

  828. mid-air

  829. reunion

  830. all

  831. of those

  832. Christians

  833. that you

  834. miss

  835. right now

  836. who have

  837. died

  838. you

  839. will be

  840. reunited

  841. with them

  842. at the

  843. coming of

  844. the Lord

  845. Jesus

  846. Christ

  847. if he

  848. comes in

  849. our

  850. lifetimes

  851. and we'll

  852. be reunited

  853. with them

  854. in the

  855. air

  856. all of

  857. us

  858. being

  859. radically

  860. transformed

  861. with

  862. resurrection

  863. bodies

  864. but there's

  865. no question

  866. the dead

  867. in Christ

  868. are raised

  869. first

  870. they have

  871. the priority

  872. they will

  873. not be

  874. forgotten

  875. and we

  876. will meet

  877. them

  878. we will

  879. meet

  880. them

  881. in the

  882. air

  883. now there's

  884. a number

  885. of different

  886. positions

  887. Christians

  888. holds

  889. regarding

  890. the rapture

  891. of the

  892. church

  893. I

  894. personally

  895. do not

  896. believe

  897. in a

  898. secret

  899. rapture

  900. of the

  901. church

  902. I

  903. believe

  904. that

  905. when

  906. Jesus

  907. comes

  908. back

  909. he's

  910. coming

  911. back

  912. he's

  913. going

  914. to

  915. set

  916. up

  917. shop

  918. with

  919. all

  920. of

  921. his

  922. blood

  923. bought

  924. and that's

  925. why

  926. regardless

  927. of

  928. what

  929. position

  930. you

  931. hold

  932. in

  933. terms

  934. of

  935. Christ's

  936. rapturing

  937. of his

  938. church

  939. that little

  940. phrase

  941. and so

  942. we will

  943. always

  944. be

  945. with

  946. the

  947. Lord

  948. that

  949. should

  950. put

  951. great

  952. courage

  953. and joy

  954. into

  955. your

  956. heart

  957. when

  958. he

  959. comes

  960. back

  961. from

  962. then

  963. on

  964. out

  965. we

  966. together

  967. all

  968. of

  969. the

  970. blood

  971. bought

  972. who

  973. have

  974. been

  975. given

  976. resurrection

  977. bodies

  978. we

  979. will

  980. be

  981. with

  982. the

  983. Lord

  984. together

  985. in

  986. his

  987. presence

  988. so

  989. we

  990. will

  991. always

  992. be

  993. with

  994. him

  995. three

  996. anchors

  997. here's

  998. a

  999. grieving

  1000. church

  1001. fledgling

  1002. church

  1003. they're

  1004. missing

  1005. some

  1006. information

  1007. they're

  1008. hopelessly

  1009. uninformed

  1010. and here

  1011. is

  1012. Paul

  1013. giving

  1014. hopeful

  1015. instruction

  1016. to

  1017. them

  1018. three

  1019. anchors

  1020. a

  1021. gospel

  1022. promise

  1023. Christ

  1024. will

  1025. not

  1026. forget

  1027. those

  1028. who

  1029. have

  1030. fallen

  1031. asleep

  1032. he

  1033. died

  1034. and

  1035. was

  1036. raised

  1037. for

  1038. them

  1039. there's

  1040. the

  1041. word

  1042. from

  1043. the

  1044. Lord

  1045. there's

  1046. this

  1047. procedural

  1048. sequence

  1049. those

  1050. who

  1051. are

  1052. alive

  1053. will

  1054. not

  1055. precede

  1056. those

  1057. who

  1058. are

  1059. dead

  1060. and

  1061. then

  1062. we

  1063. have

  1064. this

  1065. prophetic

  1066. picture

  1067. this

  1068. vision

  1069. of a

  1070. mid

  1071. air

  1072. reunion

  1073. all

  1074. of that

  1075. together

  1076. what

  1077. that

  1078. does

  1079. is

  1080. Paul

  1081. anchors

  1082. grief

  1083. into

  1084. the

  1085. truth

  1086. of

  1087. God's

  1088. word

  1089. resulting

  1090. in

  1091. hope

  1092. hope

  1093. hope

  1094. in

  1095. light

  1096. of

  1097. those

  1098. Christians

  1099. who

  1100. have

  1101. died

  1102. when

  1103. a

  1104. fellow

  1105. Christian

  1106. dies

  1107. we

  1108. encourage

  1109. one

  1110. another

  1111. with

  1112. the

  1113. hope

  1114. of

  1115. Christ's

  1116. return

  1117. did you

  1118. notice

  1119. how

  1120. all

  1121. of

  1122. these

  1123. anchors

  1124. they

  1125. have

  1126. Christ's

  1127. return

  1128. central

  1129. to

  1130. them

  1131. it's

  1132. not

  1133. just

  1134. saying

  1135. hey

  1136. he

  1137. he

  1138. or

  1139. she

  1140. is

  1141. in

  1142. the

  1143. presence

  1144. of

  1145. the

  1146. Lord

  1147. it's

  1148. that

  1149. and

  1150. and

  1151. he's

  1152. coming

  1153. back

  1154. and

  1155. when

  1156. he

  1157. does

  1158. we

  1159. will

  1160. be

  1161. reunited

  1162. hopelessly

  1163. uninformed

  1164. to

  1165. this

  1166. hopeful

  1167. instruction

  1168. point

  1169. two

  1170. and

  1171. now

  1172. Paul

  1173. doesn't

  1174. leave

  1175. it

  1176. there

  1177. he

  1178. closes

  1179. with

  1180. a

  1181. hope

  1182. spreading

  1183. exhortation

  1184. these

  1185. Thessalonian

  1186. Christians

  1187. they

  1188. are

  1189. they're

  1190. under

  1191. duress

  1192. they're

  1193. being

  1194. persecuted

  1195. they're

  1196. suffering

  1197. for

  1198. Christ

  1199. brothers

  1200. and

  1201. sisters

  1202. in

  1203. Christ

  1204. had

  1205. died

  1206. and

  1207. likely

  1208. more

  1209. were

  1210. to

  1211. die

  1212. just

  1213. as

  1214. likely

  1215. we

  1216. will

  1217. be

  1218. attending

  1219. one

  1220. another's

  1221. funerals

  1222. and so

  1223. Paul

  1224. urges

  1225. these

  1226. Thessalonians

  1227. and God

  1228. through

  1229. Paul

  1230. us

  1231. to

  1232. keep

  1233. these

  1234. words

  1235. these

  1236. grief

  1237. anchoring

  1238. into

  1239. truth

  1240. hope

  1241. giving

  1242. words

  1243. in

  1244. front

  1245. of

  1246. us

  1247. here's

  1248. the

  1249. exhortation

  1250. therefore

  1251. encourage

  1252. one

  1253. another

  1254. with

  1255. these

  1256. words

  1257. encourage

  1258. one

  1259. another

  1260. with

  1261. these

  1262. words

  1263. speak

  1264. these

  1265. words

  1266. brothers

  1267. and

  1268. sisters

  1269. anchor

  1270. one

  1271. another's

  1272. grief

  1273. into

  1274. the

  1275. truth

  1276. resulting

  1277. in

  1278. hope

  1279. speak

  1280. these

  1281. words

  1282. in

  1283. love

  1284. to

  1285. one

  1286. another

  1287. keep

  1288. speaking

  1289. these

  1290. words

  1291. this

  1292. gospel

  1293. promise

  1294. this

  1295. since

  1296. Jesus

  1297. died

  1298. raised

  1299. and

  1300. he's

  1301. coming

  1302. back

  1303. then

  1304. he

  1305. is

  1306. bringing

  1307. back

  1308. with

  1309. them

  1310. those

  1311. who

  1312. have

  1313. died

  1314. in

  1315. the

  1316. Lord

  1317. this

  1318. word

  1319. of

  1320. the

  1321. Lord

  1322. this

  1323. sequence

  1324. and

  1325. this

  1326. prophetic

  1327. picture

  1328. of a

  1329. mid-air

  1330. reunion

  1331. don't

  1332. be like

  1333. a

  1334. trampoline

  1335. that's

  1336. not

  1337. anchored

  1338. picked

  1339. up

  1340. and hurled

  1341. about

  1342. by the

  1343. the

  1344. gales

  1345. of

  1346. grief

  1347. don't

  1348. be

  1349. like

  1350. that

  1351. don't

  1352. grieve

  1353. as

  1354. though

  1355. you

  1356. don't

  1357. have

  1358. hope

  1359. no

  1360. God

  1361. is

  1362. God's

  1363. not

  1364. forbidding

  1365. grief

  1366. he's

  1367. exhorting

  1368. us

  1369. to

  1370. be

  1371. anchoring

  1372. one

  1373. another

  1374. in

  1375. these

  1376. words

  1377. of

  1378. hope

  1379. these

  1380. truthful

  1381. words

  1382. of

  1383. what

  1384. will

  1385. happen

  1386. when

  1387. Christ

  1388. returns

  1389. here's

  1390. what

  1391. this

  1392. means

  1393. when

  1394. we

  1395. walk

  1396. with

  1397. each

  1398. other

  1399. through

  1400. death

  1401. when

  1402. we

  1403. attend

  1404. each

  1405. other's

  1406. funerals

  1407. when

  1408. we

  1409. seek

  1410. to

  1411. comfort

  1412. the

  1413. spouses

  1414. of

  1415. those

  1416. who

  1417. die

  1418. it

  1419. means

  1420. we've

  1421. got

  1422. something

  1423. to

  1424. say

  1425. not

  1426. only

  1427. is

  1428. this

  1429. deceased

  1430. Christian

  1431. in

  1432. the

  1433. presence

  1434. of

  1435. the

  1436. Lord

  1437. if

  1438. we

  1439. are

  1440. alive

  1441. when

  1442. Christ

  1443. returns

  1444. we

  1445. will

  1446. be

  1447. reunited

  1448. with

  1449. them

  1450. and

  1451. Christ

  1452. forever

  1453. it's

  1454. the

  1455. greater

  1456. hope

  1457. when

  1458. we

  1459. all

  1460. are

  1461. encouraging

  1462. one

  1463. another

  1464. with

  1465. these

  1466. words

  1467. 14

  1468. through

  1469. 17

  1470. we

  1471. build

  1472. one

  1473. another

  1474. up

  1475. in

  1476. Christian

  1477. hope

  1478. brothers

  1479. and

  1480. sisters

  1481. you

  1482. can

  1483. do

  1484. !

  1485. brothers

  1486. and

  1487. sisters

  1488. you

  1489. must

  1490. do

  1491. this

  1492. when

  1493. fellow

  1494. Christians

  1495. die

  1496. we

  1497. encourage

  1498. one

  1501. the

  1502. hope

  1503. of

  1504. Christ's

  1505. return

  1506. so

  1507. here

  1508. you

  1509. are

  1510. alone

  1511. with

  1512. Charlotte

  1513. in

  1514. this

  1515. side

  1516. room

  1517. with

  1518. her

  1519. gently

  1520. weeping

  1521. what

  1522. do

  1523. you

  1524. do

  1525. well

  1526. here's

  1527. some

  1528. suggestions

  1529. you

  1530. say

  1531. can

  1532. I

  1533. give

  1534. you

  1535. a

  1536. hug

  1537. and

  1538. you

  1539. hug

  1540. her

  1541. as

  1542. long

  1543. as

  1544. she

  1545. hugs

  1546. you

  1547. and

  1548. if

  1549. you

  1550. start

  1551. feeling

  1552. the

  1553. warm

  1554. wet

  1555. of

  1556. her

  1557. tears

  1558. on

  1559. your

  1560. neck

  1561. or

  1562. working

  1563. through

  1564. your

  1565. shirt

  1566. you

  1567. hang

  1568. on

  1569. until

  1570. she

  1571. lets

  1572. you

  1573. go

  1574. you

  1575. hug

  1576. her

  1577. and

  1578. then

  1579. you

  1580. say

  1581. into

  1582. her

  1583. ear

  1584. Charlotte

  1585. if

  1586. we

  1587. are

  1588. alive

  1589. when

  1590. Christ

  1591. returns

  1592. we

  1593. will

  1594. be

  1595. reunited

  1596. with

  1597. Stan

  1598. and

  1599. Jesus!

  1600. and

  1601. after a

  1602. moment

  1603. when

  1604. she

  1605. finally

  1606. lets

  1607. you

  1608. go

  1609. you

  1610. ask

  1611. Charlotte

  1612. Charlotte

  1613. I know

  1614. we need to get

  1615. back to the

  1616. luncheon

  1617. but

  1618. would you

  1619. come over

  1620. for dinner

  1621. in a week

  1622. or two

  1623. we

  1624. want to

  1625. be

  1626. with

  1627. you

  1628. we

  1629. want

  1630. you

  1631. to

  1632. be

  1633. with

  1634. us

  1635. and

  1636. when

  1637. Charlotte

  1638. finally

  1639. comes

  1640. over

  1641. and

  1642. you

  1643. have

  1644. a

  1645. meal

  1646. together

  1647. maybe

  1648. you

  1649. don't

  1650. even

  1651. talk

  1652. about

  1653. Stan

  1654. you

  1655. walk

  1656. her

  1657. out

  1658. to

  1659. her

  1660. car

  1661. and

  1662. you

  1663. just

  1664. say

  1665. to

  1666. Charlotte

  1667. I

  1668. just

  1669. want

  1670. to

  1671. remind

  1672. you

  1673. that

  1674. if

  1675. we

  1676. are

  1677. alive

  1678. when

  1679. Christ

  1680. returns

  1681. we

  1682. will

  1683. be

  1684. reunited

  1685. with

  1686. both

  1687. Stan

  1688. and

  1689. Jesus

  1690. just

  1691. want

  1692. to

  1693. remind

  1694. you

  1695. and

  1696. then

  1697. a

  1698. year

  1699. later

  1700. it

  1701. Stan's

  1702. death

  1703. anniversary

  1704. because

  1705. you've

  1706. written

  1707. it

  1708. down

  1709. you've

  1710. remembered

  1711. you

  1712. reach

  1713. out

  1714. you

  1715. reach

  1716. out

  1717. to

  1718. Charlotte

  1719. you

  1720. bring

  1721. her

  1722. over

  1723. again

  1724. you

  1725. say

  1726. how

  1727. are

  1728. you

  1729. doing

  1730. and

  1731. you

  1732. say

  1733. I

  1734. just

  1735. want

  1736. to

  1737. remind

  1738. you

  1739. if

  1740. we're

  1741. alive

  1742. when

  1743. Jesus

  1744. returns

  1745. we

  1746. will

  1747. be

  1748. reunited

  1749. with

  1750. both

  1751. Stan

  1752. and

  1753. Jesus

  1754. it

  1755. will

  1756. be

  1757. good

  1758. that's

  1759. what

  1760. we

  1761. do

  1762. that's

  1763. how

  1764. we

  1765. love

  1766. one

  1767. another

  1768. that's

  1769. how

  1770. we

  1771. grieve

  1772. with

  1773. those

  1774. who

  1775. grieve

  1776. how

  1777. we

  1778. comfort

  1779. with

  1780. the

  1781. hope

  1782. the

  1783. unique

  1784. Christian

  1785. hope

  1786. now

  1787. this

  1788. is a

  1789. comfort

  1790. Christians

  1791. have

  1792. when a

  1793. fellow

  1794. Christian

  1795. dies

  1796. but it

  1797. may

  1798. raise

  1799. the

  1800. question

  1801. with

  1802. you

  1803. what

  1804. about

  1805. when a

  1806. non

  1807. Christian

  1808. dies

  1809. what

  1810. then

  1811. there's

  1812. no

  1813. way

  1814. around

  1815. the

  1816. sadness

  1817. and the

  1818. sobriety

  1819. of

  1820. realizing

  1821. that

  1822. this

  1823. person

  1824. who

  1825. has

  1826. died

  1827. apart

  1828. from

  1829. Christ's

  1830. death

  1831. and

  1832. resurrection

  1833. they

  1834. will

  1835. experience

  1836. God's

  1837. just

  1838. wrath

  1839. for

  1840. eternity

  1841. there

  1842. is

  1843. no

  1844. way

  1845. around

  1846. that

  1847. you

  1848. can't

  1849. reduce

  1850. that

  1851. you

  1852. can't

  1853. ignore

  1854. that

  1855. there

  1856. is

  1857. heartache

  1858. in

  1859. this

  1860. life

  1861. brothers

  1862. and

  1863. sisters

  1864. the

  1865. stakes

  1866. are

  1867. high

  1868. so

  1869. we

  1870. preach

  1871. Christ

  1872. we

  1873. preach

  1874. Christ

  1875. at a

  1876. non

  1877. Christian's

  1878. funeral

  1879. and at

  1880. a

  1881. Christian's

  1882. funeral

  1883. and

  1884. we

  1885. preach

  1886. Christ

  1887. to

  1888. those

  1889. non

  1890. Christians

  1891. who

  1892. God

  1893. gives

  1894. life

  1895. today

  1896. that's

  1897. how we

  1898. respond

  1899. to

  1900. that

  1901. Jesus

  1902. Christ

  1903. is the

  1904. difference

  1905. between

  1906. hope

  1907. and

  1908. hopelessness

  1909. in the

  1910. face

  1911. of

  1912. death

  1913. but

  1914. when

  1915. fellow

  1916. Christians

  1917. die

  1918. we

  1919. encourage

  1920. one

  1921. another

  1922. with

  1923. the

  1924. hope

  1925. of

  1926. Christ

  1927. return

  1928. let's

  1929. pray

  1930. together

  1931. Lord

  1932. Jesus

  1933. we're

  1934. so

  1935. grateful

  1936. that

  1937. you

  1938. are

  1939. risen

  1940. reigning

  1941. and

  1942. radiant

  1943. you

  1944. are

  1945. being

  1946. worshipped

  1947. by

  1948. innumerable

  1949. angels

  1950. and

  1951. by

  1952. countless

  1953. brothers

  1954. and sisters

  1955. in Christ

  1956. who have

  1957. gone

  1958. before us

  1959. and who

  1960. are in

  1961. your

  1962. presence

  1963. right

  1964. now

  1965. Lord

  1966. Jesus

  1967. we look

  1968. forward

  1969. to the

  1970. day

  1971. in

  1972. Revelation

  1973. 21

  1974. when you

  1975. come back

  1976. and you

  1977. wipe away

  1978. every tear

  1979. from our

  1980. eyes

  1981. Lord

  1982. Jesus

  1983. you have

  1984. promised

  1985. I am

  1986. coming

  1987. soon

  1988. and we

  1989. say

  1990. back

  1991. to you

  1992. come

  1993. Lord

  1994. Jesus

  1995. come

  1996. would you

  1997. comfort us

  1998. in our

  1999. grief

  2000. and would you

  2001. make us

  2002. bold in our

  2003. evangelism

  2004. we pray this

  2005. in your name

  2006. amen

  2007. holy
