  1. And children, you are dismissed to your King's Kids class.

  2. ! And if y'all would open up your Bibles to 1 Thessalonians 5,

  3. ! I am going to read verses 1-11.

  4. We've only got three more sermons left, counting today, in 1 Thessalonians.

  5. And then we're going to get into the Gospel of John.

  6. It's page 1174.

  7. 1 Thessalonians 5, 1-11.

  8. Hear God's Word.

  9. Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters,

  10. you have no need to have anything written to you,

  11. for you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

  12. While people are saying, there is peace and security,

  13. then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman,

  14. and they will not escape.

  15. But you are not in darkness, brothers and sisters, for that day to surprise you like a thief.

  16. For you are all children of light, children of the day.

  17. We are not of the night or of the darkness.

  18. So then let us keep awake and be sober.

  19. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.

  20. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love,

  21. and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

  22. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  23. who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we might live with Him.

  24. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

  25. May God bless the hearing of His Word.

  26. Knock, knock, knock.

  27. Knock, knock, knock, knock.

  28. Ah.

  29. You have an unexpected visitor at your front door.

  30. What would be the first thing you do?

  31. Here's what I would do.

  32. I would sneak a peek out the side window.

  33. Who is this visiting our house unexpectedly?

  34. And lo and behold, let's just say it is a bill collector.

  35. I'm guessing many of you may say something like,

  36. Okay, family, let's just pretend no one's home.

  37. Or maybe it's a police officer.

  38. You might be thinking, uh-oh.

  39. What's going to happen?

  40. But if it is your best friend, with a smile, unexpected, with a four-pack of Sprecher root beer,

  41. you're going to be like, Oh, yeah!

  42. Come on in!

  43. Surprise visitors have a way of revealing our hearts, don't they?

  44. One of the themes of 1 Thessalonians is the unexpected coming, second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  45. And in the passage I just read, it's referred to as the day of the Lord, verse 2.

  46. On that day of His coming.

  47. On the day of Christ's coming.

  48. And by the way, all the world will know.

  49. It will be a glorious, highly public event when Jesus comes back.

  50. On that day, what will be happening inside of you if you're here on that day?

  51. What will be going on?

  52. Will you be saying, Oh, no!

  53. Or will you be saying, Oh, yeah!

  54. For many Christians, including the Thessalonians who Paul wrote this letter to,

  55. the unexpected, the second coming of Jesus Christ can make you nervous.

  56. It can unsettle you.

  57. Even make you fearful.

  58. Christian, if the second coming of Jesus Christ is unsettling to you,

  59. you are in the right place.

  60. Because 1 Thessalonians 5, 1 through 11, it's designed to assure you.

  61. It's designed to comfort you.

  62. To put courage into your heart.

  63. In a one-sentence nutshell,

  64. here's what God is telling us this morning from this passage.

  65. Christian, don't fear that day.

  66. Be ready for it.

  67. Christian, don't fear that day,

  68. the coming of the Lord.

  69. Be ready for it.

  70. And this passage is intended to assure us that we have nothing to fear at Christ's coming on the day of the Lord.

  71. And it's going to do it by making an extended contrast.

  72. It contrasts between two peoples and two lifestyles and two destinies.

  73. And so here are the four points this morning that I'm going to walk you through.

  74. That coming day, what you need to know about it.

  75. Two contrasting people, point two.

  76. Point three is two contrasting lifestyles.

  77. And point four is two contrasting destinies.

  78. Christian, you don't need to fear that day.

  79. You need to be ready for it.

  80. So let's hear what Paul has to say about this coming day of the Lord.

  81. In verses one and two, we read this.

  82. Now concerning the times and the seasons, or as Jesus would say, the day and the hour.

  83. Concerning the times and seasons, brothers and sisters,

  84. you have no need to have anything written to you,

  85. for you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

  86. Now, Paul is essentially saying here that with regard to the timing of Christ's return,

  87. he has nothing new to write them.

  88. He already covered that ground when he was with them,

  89. when he visited them for a few weeks, maybe a month, maybe two.

  90. We can read that back in Acts 17.

  91. When he was there, not only did he lead them to Christ,

  92. he explained to them what to expect when it comes to the second coming of Christ.

  93. But there's two things in verses one and two I just want you to see, help you understand.

  94. The first one is the phrase, the day of the Lord.

  95. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

  96. That's a significant phrase because it shows up frequently in the Old Testament.

  97. And what I want to do is just very briefly help you understand the scope of that phrase,

  98. what that's getting at.

  99. And we could look at a variety of Old Testament passages,

  100. but just to give you a sense,

  101. if you looked at Isaiah chapter 13, verses 6 through 16,

    Isaiah 13:6–16

  102. you would see that the day of the Lord is a terrible thing,

  103. is a frightful thing.

  104. That it's a day when God comes and he brings with him full and final judgment

  105. upon those outside of the people of God, unbelievers.

  106. It's a terrible day.

  107. But we also read in Isaiah 27, 1 through 13,

  108. that the day of the Lord, for those who belong to God,

  109. for who are of his people, who are believers in him,

  110. that day is not a terrible day.

  111. That's a joyful day.

  112. That's a day of salvation.

  113. That's when he comes back and he makes all things right.

  114. One, if you are an unbeliever on the day of the Lord,

  115. it's going to be a horror.

  116. But if you are a believer on that day of the Lord,

  117. it is going to be a day of rejoicing.

  118. So the day of the Lord carries that full sense.

  119. And we see it in our passage.

  120. In verse 3, while people are saying there is peace and security,

  121. then sudden destruction will come upon them

  122. as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman

  123. and they will not escape.

  124. The day of the Lord is going to bring sudden destruction.

  125. We also read in verse 9 that that day is going to be a day

  126. in which those who believe in Christ obtain salvation

  127. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  128. A day of sudden, inescapable destruction for unbelievers

  129. and a day in which we will begin to live with him

  130. with all of the blood bought forever.

  131. So the day of the Lord is a future coming of God

  132. in which he brings with him full and final destruction

  133. for unbelievers and full and final salvation for believers.

  134. So what Paul is doing here is he's actually equating

  135. the day of the Lord with the second coming of Jesus Christ.

  136. The day of the Lord is the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  137. If you were to open up your Bible to Revelation 19.15,

  138. it's a great passage when Jesus is pictured on a great white war horse

  139. coming back and he's got four names.

  140. But in verse 15, we read this, that when he comes,

  141. he will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

  142. It's a horrific picture.

  143. But we also read in Revelation 21.3-4 that when he comes back,

  144. when the new Jerusalem descends,

  145. God will wipe away every tear from our face of believers.

  146. It's quite a contrast.

  147. We also read that the day of the Lord in verse 2

  148. is coming like a thief in the night.

  149. Thiefs come unexpectedly.

  150. They don't text you to let you know at what hour they're coming.

  151. And what Paul is doing here is he's just simply reiterating

  152. what Jesus taught in Matthew chapter 24.

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  153. And you can read what Jesus taught about the day and the hour of his return

  154. in verses 36-34.

  155. He says,

  156. And what Jesus is referring to is the day in which he will come back

  157. and he will bring with him destruction for those who do not believe

  158. and he brings salvation for those who do believe

  159. and nobody knows when.

  160. No one in this room knows when Jesus is coming back.

  161. And so, we're not to try to guess.

  162. We're not to try to speculate.

  163. Here's the closest thing we can do

  164. when it comes to trying to anticipate the coming day of the Lord.

  165. It's this.

  166. By the end of today, we can, Lord willing,

  167. say, well, we're one day closer.

  168. You see, the window isn't lengthening to Christ's return.

  169. The window's closing.

  170. We're one day closer.

  171. We can say that.

  172. And what that does is put us in a state of readiness.

  173. We need to be ready.

  174. Like a thief who comes in the night.

  175. We gotta be ready.

  176. Does anybody remember Y2K?

  177. If you are young and never heard of that before,

  178. Google it.

  179. You'll find it interesting.

  180. But for those of us who lived through it,

  181. there was a lot of people prepping,

  182. getting ready for a global computer glitch,

  183. which never really happened.

  184. We knew the day and the hour,

  185. and we were getting ready for it.

  186. What we're being told here is,

  187. hey, we don't know the day or the hour.

  188. But we need to be ready for it.

  189. And it raises the question,

  190. how do we get ready for that day?

  191. A day we don't know.

  192. Well, we're not to fear that day.

  193. We're to be ready for it.

  194. So let me ask you two questions before I move on.

  195. Have you considered that Jesus Christ may return in your lifetime?

  196. Have you considered that?

  197. And then, does that strike fear into your heart?

  198. Or does that stir longing in your heart?

  199. That day.

  200. That coming day is one day closer.

  201. So now let's move on to the next point,

  202. two contrasting people.

  203. And this passage uniquely assures us

  204. that we don't need to fear that day

  205. by way of a running contrast.

  206. And the first contrast I want you to see

  207. is a contrast between two people.

  208. The day people and the night people.

  209. Let's look at the day people.

  210. In verses four and five,

  211. Paul says to these Christians,

  212. but you are not in darkness,

  213. brothers and sisters,

  214. for that day to surprise you like a thief.

  215. It's interesting that he says you're not in darkness.

  216. You're not like those in whom sudden destruction will fall upon

  217. and they cannot escape it.

  218. But brothers and sisters,

  219. family of faith is how he addresses them.

  220. These are the day people.

  221. And look at verse five.

  222. For you are children of light,

  223. children of the day.

  224. It's a contrast between day and night.

  225. Children of the day are Christians

  226. who have by God's grace

  227. been delivered from the domain of darkness

  228. and transferred into the kingdom of the beloved son,

  229. the kingdom of light.

  230. We who were once dead to God,

  231. following the prince of the power of the air

  232. in the domain of darkness,

  233. have now by God's grace been made alive to God,

  234. are following King Jesus,

  235. and are in God's kingdom citizens of the kingdom of light.

  236. That's who we are right now.

  237. If you're a child of the day,

  238. you're a child of the light,

  239. which means you are a child of the living God.

  240. He has adopted you by his grace

  241. into his family.

  242. And it's not on the basis of anything

  243. that you have done, John 1.12.

  244. And because God is light,

  245. I mean Jesus said,

  246. I am the light of the world.

  247. We now bear the family resemblance.

  248. If you're a Christian,

  249. you have been lit up by God's grace,

  250. and God will not abandon you.

  251. He will not unadopt you.

  252. We have all the legal rights and privileges

  253. of being sons and daughters of the living God,

  254. and that means an eternal inheritance

  255. for which we are waiting and long for,

  256. and Jesus is bringing back with him.

  257. Christians,

  258. don't fear that day.

  259. Because of who you are,

  260. by God's grace.

  261. And that's contrasted with those

  262. who belong to the night.

  263. In 5.3, they're described as people

  264. who are saying there is peace and security,

  265. peace, peace.

  266. When there is no peace,

  267. they think all is well.

  268. When in fact it's not,

  269. then sudden destruction will come upon them

  270. as labor pains upon a pregnant woman.

  271. I am not a woman,

  272. nor am I pregnant.

  273. But my understanding is,

  274. you don't really kind of set a date

  275. for contractions to arrive,

  276. and they're inescapable.

  277. These are people who will experience

  278. sudden, inescapable,

  279. eternal destruction

  280. on the day of the Lord.

  281. They're of the night.

  282. In verse 9,

  283. we infer that those in darkness

  284. will be objects of God's wrath

  285. on that day.

  286. And what Paul says is very clear

  287. in 5.5 regarding Christians.

  288. We are not of the night.

  289. We are not of the darkness.

  290. That is not who we are anymore.

  291. What we have here is a contrast of identity.

  292. Those who are children of the day,

  293. children of God,

  294. and those who belong to the night.

  295. Unbelievers.

  296. Who you are.

  297. One of the great assurances

  298. that you don't need to fear that day

  299. is who you are in Christ.

  300. You know what an ID card is, don't you?

  301. Driver's license.

  302. Student ID.

  303. Passport.

  304. Just imagine every Christian

  305. carrying a grace ID card.

  306. You can pull that card out.

  307. I don't have my wallet on it,

  308. but you pull that card out.

  309. Your name's on it.

  310. It's state,

  311. sinner saved by grace.

  312. Adopted by the living God.

  313. Under my name,

  314. it would say,

  315. son of the living God.

  316. If you're a lady,

  317. you'd be daughter of the living God.

  318. It would have your rebirth date on it.

  319. The day that God,

  320. he gave you new life.

  321. And if you smelled it,

  322. if you smelled that card,

  323. do you know what it smelled like?

  324. Do you know what the fragrance it carries?

  325. It's the fragrance of Jesus.

  326. Because your identity

  327. is in Christ.

  328. It's your grace ID card.

  329. It's who you are.

  330. The argument here,

  331. where Paul starts with these contrasts,

  332. is you don't need to fear that day

  333. because of who you are in Christ.

  334. Christ.

  335. That's the point of these contrasting people.

  336. You don't fear that day

  337. because you carry a grace ID card.

  338. It's who you are.

  339. Which brings us to the next point.

  340. Two contrasting people

  341. have two contrasting lifestyles.

  342. We see this is in verse 6 and 8.

  343. And the principle is this.

  344. Who you are

  345. determines how you live.

  346. And we have two different lifestyles.

  347. We have the day life,

  348. children of the day.

  349. And we've got the night life,

  350. those in darkness.

  351. The day life,

  352. you can see in verse 6,

  353. are those who are to keep awake

  354. and be sober.

  355. And the night life,

  356. in verse 7,

  357. are those who are asleep and drunk.

  358. Children of the day have a lifestyle

  359. of wakefulness and sobriety.

  360. And those of darkness,

  361. of the night,

  362. have a lifestyle of sleeping

  363. and of drunkenness.

  364. Let's look at the night life.

  365. Notice in verse 7

  366. that both activities of sleeping

  367. and getting drunk

  368. happen at night.

  369. For those who sleep,

  370. sleep at night.

  371. And those who get drunk

  372. are drunk at night.

  373. Now,

  374. I hope you can tell

  375. that Paul is using

  376. this sleep

  377. and getting drunk,

  378. he's using these things

  379. metaphorically.

  380. He's describing

  381. a way of being.

  382. So what does

  383. this being asleep mean?

  384. Well,

  385. you know what it's like

  386. to be asleep.

  387. You become unconscious

  388. of the things around you.

  389. You're unaware

  390. of reality.

  391. Unless you're like my dad

  392. who doesn't sleep that well.

  393. And when I was a boy

  394. and I'd come into his room,

  395. he'd like,

  396. pop out of bed!

  397. You get the point.

  398. Being asleep means

  399. being unawares.

  400. The description

  401. of a non-Christian's

  402. posture towards God.

  403. Unawares of God.

  404. Doesn't care.

  405. Doesn't care about God.

  406. Doesn't care about

  407. what God has accomplished

  408. through Christ

  409. in our salvation.

  410. And specifically,

  411. they are asleep

  412. with regard

  413. to the coming

  414. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  415. That's the sleep metaphor.

  416. What's the getting drunk metaphor?

  417. Well, let me just state this

  418. to just state the obvious.

  419. When it comes to

  420. literally drinking,

  421. the Bible permits

  422. drinking alcohol,

  423. but it forbids

  424. drunkenness.

  425. Because when you get drunk,

  426. you're no longer

  427. thinking clearly.

  428. You know what a DWI is?

  429. Driving while intoxicated.

  430. There is an LWI.

  431. Living while intoxicated.

  432. What Paul is raising here

  433. is living under the influence

  434. of sinful intoxicants

  435. of the world

  436. that just take over.

  437. In 1 John 2.16,

  438. John describes

  439. the lifestyle

  440. lifestyle

  441. of the darkness.

  442. Of the desires

  443. of the flesh.

  444. Desires of the eyes.

  445. In the prideful

  446. way of life.

  447. Pride of life.

  448. These are the

  449. anti-virtues

  450. of darkness.

  451. And those who are

  452. living in the darkness

  453. are living

  454. while intoxicated,

  455. are being ruled

  456. by these things.

  457. darkness.

  458. And we all

  459. once lived there,

  460. didn't we?

  461. Who you are

  462. determines how you live.

  463. And so if you're

  464. of the darkness,

  465. you're going to be

  466. living these

  467. virtues of darkness.

  468. Anti-virtues,

  469. better said.

  470. Contrast these things

  471. to the day life

  472. in 5.6.

  473. So then let us

  474. not sleep.

  475. as others do,

  476. non-Christians.

  477. But let us

  478. keep awake

  479. and be sober.

  480. Keep awake

  481. is to be

  482. conscious of God.

  483. You're living

  484. in reality.

  485. It's what the

  486. Proverbs talk about

  487. as living

  488. in the fear

  489. of the Lord.

  490. Where you

  491. take God

  492. seriously

  493. in every

  494. area of your

  495. life.

  496. You are

  497. aware of

  498. Him.

  499. You are

  500. seeking to

  501. live with Him

  502. as the

  503. controlling

  504. center of

  505. your life.

  506. your one

  507. consuming

  508. passion.

  509. You're all

  510. governing

  511. reality.

  512. When Jesus

  513. becomes the

  514. controlling

  515. treasure of

  516. your life.

  517. That's the

  518. day life.

  519. That's being

  520. awake.

  521. It's living

  522. in light of

  523. the salvation

  524. that as a

  525. God has

  526. accomplished

  527. in Christ.

  528. And it

  529. means keeping

  530. a clear

  531. head to

  532. that day

  533. that is

  534. one day

  535. closer.

  536. We live

  537. this day

  538. in light

  539. light of

  540. that day.

  541. And that's

  542. what it

  543. means to

  544. be sober.

  545. Not just

  546. living,

  547. being awake,

  548. but being

  549. sober means

  550. being clear

  551. headed.

  552. Not being

  553. distracted or

  554. disabled by the

  555. intoxicating desires

  556. of the world.

  557. old.

  558. I doubt

  559. anybody's

  560. heard this

  561. phrase before.

  562. Have you

  563. ever heard

  564. the phrase

  565. beer

  566. goggle?

  567. It's when

  568. someone gets

  569. drunk on

  570. beer and

  571. their vision

  572. is distorted

  573. and they

  574. see people

  575. in a

  576. distorted

  577. way.

  578. those who

  579. are in

  580. the night

  581. life

  582. have a

  583. distorted

  584. view of

  585. all things.

  586. But those

  587. who are

  588. living in

  589. the day

  590. life who

  591. are sober,

  592. we word

  593. goggle.

  594. We see

  595. with eyes

  596. of faith.

  597. We see

  598. clearly.

  599. We keep

  600. our

  601. minds

  602. sober,

  603. self-controlled.

  604. it's how

  605. we live

  606. in the

  607. light.

  608. What's

  609. interesting

  610. here is

  611. that Paul

  612. in verse

  613. 8 then

  614. mixes his

  615. metaphors.

  616. He's talking

  617. about sobriety

  618. in verse

  619. 8.

  620. He reiterates

  621. what he's

  622. just said.

  623. But since

  624. we belong

  625. to the

  626. day,

  627. let us

  628. be sober.

  629. Okay,

  630. got it,

  631. clear headed.

  632. But then

  633. he mixes

  634. his

  635. metaphors.

  636. Having

  637. put on

  638. the breastplate

  639. of faith

  640. and love

  641. and for

  642. a helmet

  643. the hope

  644. of salvation.

  645. salvation.

  646. You might

  647. think

  648. immediately

  649. of Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  650. chapter 6

  651. of the

  652. armor of

  653. God,

  654. of standing

  655. firm.

  656. But this

  657. is not

  658. the breastplate

  659. of righteousness.

  660. What he's

  661. talking about

  662. is the

  663. breastplate

  664. of faith

  665. and love.

  666. And then

  667. he talks

  668. about putting

  669. on the

  670. helmet.

  671. We're to

  672. be military

  673. ready.

  674. We're to

  675. gear up

  676. with gospel

  677. armor.

  678. We're to

  679. put on the

  680. helmet

  681. the hope

  682. of salvation.

  683. And that

  684. hope of

  685. salvation

  686. is the

  687. anticipation

  688. of the

  689. coming of

  690. the Lord

  691. Jesus

  692. who will

  693. bring a

  694. full and

  695. final salvation

  696. with him.

  697. What you

  698. have here

  699. is a

  700. triad.

  701. Faith,

  702. love,

  703. and hope.

  704. Maybe that

  705. rings a bell

  706. from 1 Corinthians

  707. 13.

  708. Faith,

  709. hope,

  710. and love,

  711. the greatest

  712. of which is

  713. love.

  714. He's writing

  715. to the

  716. Corinthians.

  717. You guys

  718. need to

  719. love each

  720. other.

  721. Let me

  722. emphasize

  723. love.

  724. Here,

  725. he's

  726. emphasizing

  727. hope.

  728. Put on

  729. the breastplate

  730. of faith

  731. and love.

  732. Faith in

  733. God's word,

  734. love for the

  735. brothers,

  736. and put on

  737. the helmet

  738. the hope

  739. of salvation.

  740. Be

  741. controlled.

  742. Live in

  743. light of

  744. the coming

  745. of Jesus

  746. because we're

  747. one day

  748. closer.

  749. You're to

  750. gear up

  751. that way.

  752. That is

  753. a way

  754. by which

  755. we are

  756. to be

  757. sober-minded.

  758. What's

  759. interesting

  760. here is

  761. Paul,

  762. what he

  763. prescribes

  764. in light

  765. of the

  766. coming

  767. of Jesus

  768. is not

  769. necessarily

  770. to open

  771. up your

  772. newspaper

  773. and open

  774. up your

  775. Bible.

  776. He's

  777. telling us

  778. to prep

  779. a different

  780. way.

  781. He's

  782. saying prep

  783. by storing

  784. up faith

  785. and hope

  786. and love.

  787. That's how

  788. we live

  789. ready

  790. for the

  791. coming of

  792. Jesus.

  793. let me

  794. ask you

  795. a question.

  796. The

  797. night

  798. life

  799. and the

  800. day

  801. life.

  802. Of those

  803. two,

  804. which

  805. characterizes

  806. your life

  807. right now?

  808. Who you

  809. are determines

  810. how you

  811. live.

  812. If you

  813. are living

  814. awake

  815. and you

  816. are living

  817. sober,

  818. you are

  819. geared up

  820. with gospel

  821. armor,

  822. you don't

  823. need to

  824. fear that

  825. day because

  826. how you

  827. are living

  828. reveals who

  829. you are.

  830. You can

  831. be assured.

  832. But if

  833. you're trying

  834. to live

  835. the night

  836. life while

  837. being a

  838. child of

  839. the light,

  840. do you know

  841. what that's

  842. going to

  843. result in?

  844. You're

  845. going to be

  846. miserable.

  847. What does

  848. light have

  849. common with

  850. darkness?

  851. this?

  852. You're

  853. going to be

  854. miserable.

  855. I lived

  856. that way

  857. for a long

  858. time and

  859. I was

  860. miserable.

  861. God be

  862. praised.

  863. Here's the

  864. question I

  865. have for you.

  866. Do you

  867. want to

  868. walk in

  869. the light?

  870. Do you

  871. want to

  872. live by

  873. faith?

  874. Do you

  875. want to

  876. love your

  877. brothers and

  878. sisters?

  879. sisters, do

  880. you want

  881. Jesus to

  882. come back?

  883. In Y2K,

  884. people were

  885. prepping by

  886. putting all

  887. sorts of

  888. food in

  889. their

  890. basements.

  891. We prep

  892. by putting

  893. on the

  894. armor of

  895. God,

  896. faith,

  897. love,

  898. hope.

  899. That's how

  900. we get

  901. ready.

  902. We've

  903. seen two

  904. contrasting

  905. people.

  906. We've seen

  907. two contrasting

  908. lifestyles.

  909. Who you

  910. are determines

  911. how you

  912. live and

  913. it also

  914. determines

  915. your destiny.

  916. Two

  917. contrasting

  918. destinies.

  919. They're so

  920. contrasting,

  921. they are as

  922. different as

  923. day and

  924. night.

  925. The first

  926. destiny is

  927. that of those

  928. who belong to

  929. the night.

  930. These are the

  931. people who are

  932. dead to God.

  933. They're

  934. oblivious to

  935. him.

  936. They don't

  937. take him

  938. seriously.

  939. They don't

  940. really care

  941. about the

  942. salvation that

  943. he's accomplished

  944. in Christ.

  945. Christ's return

  946. is just maybe

  947. an interest,

  948. but they

  949. really don't

  950. care much

  951. more about it

  952. than that,

  953. if anything.

  954. They are

  955. drunk on

  956. worldly

  957. toxins.

  958. Their destiny

  959. is clear,

  960. verse 3 of

  961. chapter 5,

  962. while they're

  963. saying,

  964. peace,

  965. insecurity,

  966. sudden destruction

  967. will come upon

  968. them as labor

  969. pains,

  970. and they

  971. will not

  972. escape.

  973. Inescapable

  974. destruction,

  975. an endless

  976. pouring out

  977. of the wrath

  978. of God.

  979. Do you know

  980. what Revelation

  981. 1-7 says?

  982. That when Jesus

  983. comes back,

  984. all of the

  985. non-Christians

  986. on the planet

  987. will wail,

  988. they'll

  989. wail,

  990. because when

  991. Jesus comes

  992. back,

  993. it will be

  994. obvious there's

  995. no escaping

  996. the destruction

  997. he brings with

  998. him.

  999. He is going

  1000. to tread

  1001. the winepress

  1002. of the fury

  1003. of the wrath

  1004. of God

  1005. Almighty.

  1006. Now,

  1007. you may be

  1008. in your seat

  1009. saying,

  1010. wait,

  1011. wait,

  1012. wait,

  1013. time out.

  1014. I thought

  1015. God was a

  1016. God of love.

  1017. what's all

  1018. this wrathful

  1019. stuff?

  1020. Fury

  1021. winepress,

  1022. violent

  1023. treading

  1024. business.

  1025. You might

  1026. be thinking,

  1027. what's

  1028. God's

  1029. problem?

  1030. Let me

  1031. just humbly

  1032. say this.

  1033. That's the

  1034. wrong question.

  1035. The real

  1036. question

  1037. has to do

  1038. with us.

  1039. the everlasting

  1040. fury of

  1041. God's wrath

  1042. points to

  1043. our problem.

  1044. The sinfulness

  1045. of our sin

  1046. against a

  1047. holy,

  1048. just,

  1049. eternal God

  1050. who is

  1051. bound by

  1052. his righteous

  1053. character

  1054. to execute

  1055. holy,

  1056. just,

  1057. and eternal

  1058. judgment

  1059. on our sin.

  1060. He is

  1061. bound to it.

  1062. You don't

  1063. want an

  1064. unjust God.

  1065. God,

  1066. the destiny

  1067. of those

  1068. who belong

  1069. to the

  1070. night,

  1071. apart from

  1072. Christ,

  1073. unexpected,

  1074. inescapable,

  1075. eternal wrath

  1076. of God

  1077. poured out,

  1078. and I just

  1079. need to add

  1080. one more

  1081. thing.

  1082. God will

  1083. be glorified

  1084. in that.

  1085. God

  1086. will be

  1087. glorified

  1088. in that.

  1089. It's

  1090. the destiny

  1091. of those

  1092. who do

  1093. not

  1094. repent,

  1095. but for

  1096. those

  1097. who by

  1098. God's

  1099. grace

  1100. do

  1101. repent

  1102. and believe

  1103. in Christ,

  1104. their destiny,

  1105. our destiny,

  1106. is as

  1107. different as

  1108. the day

  1109. is from

  1110. the night.

  1111. In

  1112. verse 9,

  1113. we read,

  1114. for God

  1115. has not

  1116. destined us

  1117. for wrath,

  1118. but to

  1119. obtain salvation

  1120. through our

  1121. Lord Jesus

  1122. Christ.

  1123. That

  1124. is our

  1125. destiny.

  1126. salvation

  1127. through Jesus

  1128. Christ.

  1129. Wait a

  1130. second,

  1131. you say?

  1132. Aren't

  1133. Christians

  1134. sinners

  1135. too?

  1136. Yes,

  1137. Christians

  1138. are sinners

  1139. saved by

  1140. grace.

  1141. Why

  1142. isn't

  1143. God's

  1144. wrath

  1145. our

  1146. destiny?

  1147. What's

  1148. the difference?

  1149. What's

  1150. the difference

  1151. between the

  1152. two?

  1153. We see

  1154. in verse

  1155. 10.

  1156. But to

  1157. obtain salvation

  1158. through our

  1159. Lord Jesus

  1160. Christ,

  1161. who died

  1162. for us.

  1163. Who died

  1164. for us?

  1165. Christ

  1166. died as

  1167. a substitute

  1168. for all

  1169. who would

  1170. believe in

  1171. him.

  1172. For us,

  1173. he died

  1174. in our

  1175. place.

  1176. Christ's

  1177. finished work

  1178. on the

  1179. cross has

  1180. secured our

  1181. salvation,

  1182. past,

  1183. present,

  1184. future.

  1185. Past,

  1186. we've been

  1187. justified,

  1188. we've been

  1189. adopted.

  1190. Present,

  1191. we are being

  1192. sanctified,

  1193. we are being

  1194. conformed into

  1195. the image

  1196. of Christ.

  1197. And for

  1198. the future,

  1199. we will

  1200. one day

  1201. be glorified.

  1202. That is

  1203. coming.

  1204. When we

  1205. will

  1206. experience,

  1207. we will be

  1208. in God's

  1209. presence,

  1210. with God's

  1211. people,

  1212. in God's

  1213. place,

  1214. experiencing

  1215. God's

  1216. everlasting

  1217. peace.

  1218. You see,

  1219. what the

  1220. cross has

  1221. done,

  1222. it has

  1223. secured

  1224. our destiny.

  1225. If Christ

  1226. died for

  1227. you,

  1228. instead of

  1229. a destiny

  1230. of just

  1231. wrath of

  1232. God,

  1233. we await

  1234. a destiny

  1235. of God's

  1236. good

  1237. presence.

  1238. Christian,

  1239. you don't

  1240. need to

  1241. fear that

  1242. day.

  1243. It's not

  1244. who you

  1245. are.

  1246. It's not

  1247. how you're

  1248. living.

  1249. It's not

  1250. your destiny.

  1251. destiny.

  1252. In fact,

  1253. our destiny,

  1254. did you

  1255. see that?

  1256. Whether we

  1257. are awake

  1258. or asleep,

  1259. that goes

  1260. back to

  1261. the last

  1262. week's

  1263. passage.

  1264. If you

  1265. are awake,

  1266. if you're

  1267. alive when

  1268. Jesus returns,

  1269. or if you've

  1270. fallen asleep,

  1271. if you've

  1272. died before

  1273. Christ's

  1274. return,

  1275. whether you're

  1276. awake or

  1277. asleep,

  1278. we might

  1279. live with

  1280. him.

  1281. The end

  1282. of this

  1283. obtaining of

  1284. salvation,

  1285. and when

  1286. Christ comes

  1287. back,

  1288. we will

  1289. all be

  1290. united,

  1291. and from

  1292. that point

  1293. on,

  1294. we will

  1295. live with

  1296. him in

  1297. his presence.

  1298. Two very

  1299. different

  1300. destinies.

  1301. 1 Thessalonians

  1302. 5, 1

  1303. through 11

  1304. is in

  1305. your Bible,

  1306. Christian,

  1307. to assure

  1308. you,

  1309. you need

  1310. not fear

  1311. that day.

  1312. but you

  1313. do need

  1314. to be

  1315. ready for

  1316. it.

  1317. That day

  1318. of the

  1319. Lord is

  1320. one day

  1321. closer.

  1322. Okay,

  1323. everybody,

  1324. get your

  1325. watch out,

  1326. synchronize

  1327. your watches,

  1328. mark one

  1329. day closer.

  1330. And of

  1331. those two

  1332. contrasting

  1333. people,

  1334. if you're a

  1335. Christian,

  1336. you're a

  1337. child of

  1338. the day.

  1339. You have

  1340. been blood

  1341. bought.

  1342. And brought

  1343. into God's

  1344. family,

  1345. so you

  1346. stand

  1347. assured.

  1348. And of

  1349. those two

  1350. different

  1351. lifestyles,

  1352. the lifestyles,

  1353. night life,

  1354. and the

  1355. day life,

  1356. if you are

  1357. awake and

  1358. sober,

  1359. if you are

  1360. growing in

  1361. those things,

  1362. if you're

  1363. gearing up

  1364. with gospel

  1365. armor,

  1366. and you are

  1367. saying,

  1368. I want to

  1369. walk by

  1370. faith,

  1371. I want to

  1372. love the

  1373. brothers,

  1374. I want to

  1375. keep on

  1376. hoping in

  1377. that coming

  1378. day,

  1379. be assured.

  1380. Lord,

  1381. and of

  1382. these two

  1383. different

  1384. destinies,

  1385. one of

  1386. God's

  1387. everlasting

  1388. judgment and

  1389. one of

  1390. God's

  1391. everlasting

  1392. peace,

  1393. for those

  1394. of us who

  1395. belong to

  1396. the day,

  1397. Christ's

  1398. death has

  1399. also secured

  1400. our future.

  1401. we don't

  1402. need to

  1403. fear that

  1404. day.

  1405. What we

  1406. have is to

  1407. anticipate

  1408. eternity in

  1409. his presence,

  1410. with his

  1411. people,

  1412. in his

  1413. place,

  1414. experiencing

  1415. his peace.

  1416. So if you

  1417. are in the

  1418. room this

  1419. morning,

  1420. and you're

  1421. fearing the

  1422. day of

  1423. Christ's

  1424. coming,

  1425. because you

  1426. know you

  1427. are not a

  1428. Christian,

  1429. today is the

  1430. day of

  1431. salvation.

  1432. put your

  1433. trust in

  1434. Christ alone.

  1435. Romans 10

  1436. says,

  1437. if we

  1438. confess Jesus

  1439. is Lord,

  1440. and believe

  1441. in your

  1442. heart that

  1443. God raised

  1444. him from

  1445. the dead,

  1446. you will

  1447. be saved,

  1448. you will

  1449. be delivered

  1450. from the

  1451. domain of

  1452. darkness,

  1453. transferred into

  1454. the kingdom

  1455. of the beloved

  1456. son,

  1457. and on that

  1458. day you

  1459. can be

  1460. assured of

  1461. welcome.

  1462. come.

  1463. And if you

  1464. are looking

  1465. forward to

  1466. that day,

  1467. if you

  1468. long for

  1469. the day,

  1470. if you're

  1471. saying,

  1472. come Lord

  1473. Jesus,

  1474. you don't

  1475. need to fear

  1476. knock,

  1477. knock,

  1478. knock at

  1479. the door.

  1480. You don't

  1481. need to fear

  1482. the glorious

  1483. return of

  1484. Jesus when

  1485. he comes

  1486. back on a

  1487. white horse.

  1488. You look

  1489. forward to

  1490. that.

  1491. You long

  1492. for that.

  1493. And what

  1494. we're being

  1495. called to do

  1496. here in

  1497. verse 11 is

  1498. to encourage

  1499. one another

  1500. in light of

  1501. that.

  1502. And this is

  1503. how you can

  1504. do it.

  1505. I'm going

  1506. to have

  1507. the congregation

  1508. on my left.

  1509. You say

  1510. this.

  1511. Child of the

  1512. day, say

  1513. it.

  1514. And the

  1515. people on

  1516. my right,

  1517. you say,

  1518. we're one

  1519. day closer.

  1520. child of

  1521. the day,

  1522. we're one

  1523. day closer.

  1524. You ready?

  1525. I'm going to

  1526. point to you

  1527. and now you

  1528. say it.

  1529. So when you

  1530. bump into a

  1531. fellow brother

  1532. or sister this

  1533. week, you

  1534. know what you

  1535. can say to

  1536. them?

  1537. Christian,

  1538. don't fear

  1539. that day.

  1540. Be ready

  1541. for it.

  1542. We just

  1543. sang it.

  1544. Fear is

  1545. gone and

  1546. hope is

  1547. sure.

  1548. Christ is

  1549. mine forever

  1550. more.

  1551. Will you

  1552. pray with

  1553. me?

  1554. Three times

  1555. in Revelation

  1556. 22, the Lord

  1557. Jesus, you

  1558. say,

  1559. behold, I'm

  1560. coming soon.

  1561. to which we

  1562. say to you

  1563. now, come

  1564. Lord Jesus.

  1565. Come.

  1566. We long

  1567. for you.

  1568. We're ready

  1569. for you.

  1570. God, would you

  1571. bless us, your

  1572. people, and

  1573. would you help

  1574. us to live

  1575. ready for

  1576. that day?

  1577. In your name

  1578. we pray.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.
