  1. And if you would open up your Bibles to John chapter 1 verses 1 through 18.

    John 1:1–18

  2. ! So the four Gospels are all accounts of the life of Jesus.

  3. Matthew and Luke keep record of the birth of Jesus.

  4. Mark just kind of jumps into the life of Jesus.

  5. And John 1 through 18 holds record of the prologue to John,

  6. the introduction to John, and it accounts the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

  7. with a little different language.

  8. Would you hear John 1, 1 through 18?

  9. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  10. He was in the beginning with God.

  11. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  12. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

  13. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  14. There was a man sent from God whose name was John, John the Baptist.

  15. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through Him.

  16. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

  17. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

  18. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

  19. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.

  20. But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God,

  21. who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  22. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.

  23. And we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son, the one-of-a-kind Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  24. John the Baptist bore witness about Him, and cried out,

  25. This was He of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because He was before me.

  26. For from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

  27. For the law was given through Moses.

  28. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  29. No one has ever seen God, the only God, the one-of-a-kind God,

  30. who is at the Father's side.

  31. He has made Him known.

  32. May God bless the hearing of His Word.

  33. It gets pretty dark in Wisconsin during the wintertime.

  34. And it's not just the sun setting around four in the afternoon.

  35. Winter in Wisconsin can be one dark, overcast day after another.

  36. And it can have psychological effects.

  37. But, some of my favorite days as a Wisconsin resident,

  38. are those crisp Wisconsin winter days when the sun is shining.

  39. You come outside, and you're like,

  40. Look it!

  41. Behold!

  42. The sun is shining in its glory!

  43. Surprise!

  44. Surprise!

  45. Those are great days.

  46. This morning reminded me of that.

  47. And this morning, here we are four days out from Christmas Day,

  48. and there is a different sun shining in His glory.

  49. Behold!

  50. The Word shining!

  51. Jesus Christ, in His incarnate glory, is shining today.

  52. And He will be shining for the rest of our lives until He returns.

  53. He will be even shining on Friday, December 26th of this week.

  54. He will be shining even when your soul feels cold.

  55. He will be shining even when the circumstances of your life are one overcast day after another.

  56. Or maybe you've come into the sanctuary this morning,

  57. and you're feeling like my Christmas tree right now.

  58. And that is, it's starting to dry out.

  59. It's starting to get a little brittle.

  60. Needles are falling.

  61. And you're like, I just need some life.

  62. The sun, the Word incarnate, is always shining.

  63. And He is a life giver.

  64. He gives life.

  65. If you want to feel the sun shine upon your face.

  66. Well, we've reached a point in John 1, 1 through 18.

  67. We've reached the last section of this prologue.

  68. And these 18 verses are designed to pique your interest in what's to come in the rest of the book.

  69. John has been giving us glimpses of the glory of Jesus Christ.

  70. And I don't know about you, but I've been asking myself, who is this Word made flesh?

  71. The Gospel of John answers that question.

  72. You might be kind of feeling this, like I want this light which gives eternal life.

  73. I want it.

  74. That's what this book is designed to do.

  75. You might be saying, I want His light to shine into my darkness and give me life.

  76. Behold the Word shining in His incarnate glory.

  77. And this morning, I'm going to show you three ways He is shining from verses 14 through 18.

  78. His super grace is shining.

  79. See that in verse 16.

  80. His surpassing greatness is shining.

  81. We'll see that in verses 15 and 17.

  82. And His seeable glory is shining.

  83. And that's in verses 14 and 18.

  84. Behold the Word incarnate shining who gives us life.

  85. Do you need life this morning?

  86. You feel like a dried out Christmas tree?

  87. It's just a matter of time.

  88. The Word is shining in His life-giving grace.

  89. Let's look at His super grace in verse 16.

  90. You've got to see this.

  91. This is extraordinary.

  92. Verse 16 says,

  93. For from His, the Word incarnate, Jesus Christ,

  94. from His fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.

  95. Of course, the His, His fullness, is the Word Jesus.

  96. 1-1, John 1-1, in the beginning was the Word.

  97. He was in the beginning.

  98. It's a shout out to Genesis 1-1.

  99. He is the uncreated creator of all things.

  100. The second person of the Trinity.

  101. He was distinct from God.

  102. And yet, He was with God.

  103. He was in relationship with God.

  104. We're going to see that in verse 18 when we get there.

  105. The Word was God.

  106. Totally God.

  107. Fully God.

  108. Completely God.

  109. And in verse 4, we see that in Him was life.

  110. Not just the physical life of creation.

  111. He sustains all things by the Word of His power.

  112. But spiritual life.

  113. Eternal life.

  114. Saving life.

  115. He is not just the creator,

  116. but the recreator of a whole new creation.

  117. Starting with the souls of men and women.

  118. He is our light shining into the darkness of our sinful, spiritually dead world.

  119. And last week, we learned that if you receive Him, if you believe in His name.

  120. And again, that's not just some kind of passive acknowledgement, but it's an act of faith.

  121. Remember the illustration from last week?

  122. When I brought you to Lincoln Lagoon, it's frozen over.

  123. I put a hundred bucks, rubber banded it around a rock, put it in a yellow festival bag,

  124. and threw it on the middle of the ice and said, go get it.

  125. In order for you to get that hundred bucks, you need to exercise faith.

  126. Got to walk on the ice.

  127. You can't just say you believe and stand by me.

  128. Saving faith is an act of faith in His name.

  129. All that Jesus Christ is.

  130. And it's His fullness.

  131. The fullness of His grace.

  132. Grace upon grace.

  133. It's a super grace that we have received.

  134. His grace gives life.

  135. You remember John 3.16.

  136. He gives eternal life to those who believe.

  137. John 10.10.

  138. I came that they might have life and might have it abundantly.

  139. What is grace?

  140. Grace is God's posture towards sinners.

  141. His unconditional love.

  142. But God's grace is not limited to His posture.

  143. God's grace is also God's power.

  144. His power to make sinners who were dead in their sins and enemies to Him living in darkness.

  145. And powerfully give them new life.

  146. Making them His sons and daughters.

  147. And bringing them into His family.

  148. His kingdom of light.

  149. That is His power.

  150. It's His power to forgive.

  151. It's His power to give us new desires.

  152. New affections.

  153. New priorities.

  154. A new telos.

  155. A new reason for being.

  156. And this grace.

  157. It brings peace.

  158. It brings shalom.

  159. Remember the angels in Luke 2.

  160. Glory to God in the highest.

  161. Christ.

  162. And on earth peace among those whom He is pleased.

  163. His posture.

  164. His power.

  165. Brings us peace.

  166. Because He makes us pleasing in His sight.

  167. By paying a great price.

  168. We can think about this grace in two ways.

  169. It's a superseding grace.

  170. And what I mean by that is this.

  171. I'll explain it in the next point a little bit more.

  172. But God gave Israel the law through Moses.

  173. We see that in verse 17.

  174. And the law was the first covenant.

  175. Or what we have come to see through Hebrews as the old covenant.

  176. And God gave Israel the law.

  177. He made them His people.

  178. Not because they earned it or deserved it.

  179. It was all by His grace.

  180. And the grace that now comes from Jesus Christ.

  181. Supersedes the grace of the old covenant.

  182. It is a new fuller grace.

  183. A new covenant grace.

  184. Both covenants were costly.

  185. They came with blood.

  186. The new covenant comes with the blood of Jesus.

  187. Because He is totally God and totally man.

  188. And that blood has brought us peace.

  189. It's a superseding grace.

  190. And it's a super abounding grace.

  191. Isn't it good to know that when you are saved by God's grace.

  192. It's not just a one and done grace.

  193. God graces you.

  194. Saves you.

  195. And He's done pouring out His grace.

  196. No.

  197. He keeps pouring out His grace.

  198. Paul tells Timothy in 2 Timothy 2.1.

  199. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

  200. His super abounding grace.

  201. His posture to us continues to give us strength and power.

  202. His grace is a ferociously flowing grace.

  203. Jesus isn't in the manger anymore.

  204. We don't worship a baby in a feeding trough anymore.

  205. Nope.

  206. He grew up.

  207. He lived a perfect life.

  208. He died for sinners.

  209. He was raised victorious over sin, death, and the devil.

  210. He's reigning on high.

  211. And we're one Christmas closer to His second advent.

  212. And the throne that He sits on.

  213. Hebrews 4.

  214. Is a throne of grace.

  215. And it's not just a trickle grace from the throne.

  216. It's not just this kind of like dripping faucet grace from His throne.

  217. It's Niagara grace.

  218. It is flowing.

  219. 681,000 gallons of water are flowing over Niagara right now.

  220. Every second.

  221. Now.

  222. Every second.

  223. It's unmeasurable.

  224. It's unceasing.

  225. It's unstoppable.

  226. God's grace is unconditional.

  227. It's always flowing.

  228. Super abounding.

  229. Niagara-like grace.

  230. Super seeding.

  231. Super abounding.

  232. It's super grace.

  233. Are you starting to see the grace?

  234. This grace upon grace.

  235. Grace.

  236. Behold the word shining.

  237. His grace is spectacular.

  238. It's nothing that we earn.

  239. And it's located in Him.

  240. In Jesus.

  241. And grace is there.

  242. Life is in there.

  243. Our Christmas tree?

  244. It's starting to die.

  245. But if you're rooted in Jesus.

  246. Grace upon grace.

  247. Grace.

  248. We have seen.

  249. His super grace.

  250. Now let's take a look.

  251. At His surpassing greatness.

  252. Because that too.

  253. Well that's shining.

  254. In verses 15 and 17.

  255. John points us to.

  256. Two members of the Bible's prophetic.

  257. Hall of fame.

  258. Verse 15.

  259. JTB.

  260. John the Baptist.

  261. And in verse 17.

  262. Moses.

  263. Two members of the prophetic.

  264. Hall of fame.

  265. And there is a reason why.

  266. We're being showed.

  267. John the Baptist.

  268. And Moses.

  269. On either side.

  270. Of this grace.

  271. Upon grace.

  272. You see.

  273. This one.

  274. In whom.

  275. Grace is found.

  276. Life is found.

  277. He is.

  278. Of surpassing greatness.

  279. Than John the Baptist.

  280. And Moses.

  281. We've already been introduced.

  282. To John the Baptist.

  283. In verses 6 through 8.

  284. He was not the true light.

  285. But came.

  286. As a witness to the light.

  287. He was.

  288. The Isaiah 40.

  289. Verse 3.

  290. Voice crying.

  291. Out in the wilderness.

  292. Make straight.

  293. The ways of the Lord.

  294. He will say that here.

  295. In John.

  296. Verse 123.

  297. In verse 15.

  298. John the disciple.

  299. Quotes.

  300. John the Baptist.

  301. As saying.

  302. He.

  303. Speaking of the incarnate word.

  304. He who comes after me.

  305. Ranks.

  306. Before me.

  307. He's greater than me.

  308. Because he was before me.

  309. Now I know that kind of sounds like a riddle.

  310. But it's not.

  311. It's an extraordinary declaration.

  312. Of the eternal pre-existence.

  313. Of the word.

  314. He who comes after me.

  315. John the Baptist.

  316. Is talking about how Jesus was born.

  317. Six months after him.

  318. He started his ministry.

  319. After him.

  320. And in that culture.

  321. Those who are older.

  322. Had a higher social standing.

  323. Than those who are younger.

  324. But not in this case.

  325. No.

  326. John the Baptist says.

  327. No.

  328. He ranks.

  329. Higher.

  330. Than me.

  331. He's greater than me.

  332. Because John the Baptist knows.

  333. That he has come.

  334. To make way.

  335. The way of the Lord.

  336. God.

  337. John the Baptist knows.

  338. That this who comes after him.

  339. Has no beginning.

  340. John the Baptist knows.

  341. That this incarnate word.

  342. Jesus Christ.

  343. Was totally God.

  344. God.

  345. And he's bearing witness.

  346. To that the word incarnate.

  347. Is God.

  348. Eternal.

  349. Become a man.

  350. The uncreated creator.

  351. The one with no beginning.

  352. From everlasting.

  353. To everlasting.

  354. The second son.

  355. The second member.

  356. Of the Trinity.

  357. Is God.

  358. So what JTB.

  359. Is saying here.

  360. Is that Jesus.

  361. The word incarnate.

  362. Is God.

  363. Eternal.

  364. Which makes him.

  365. Of surpassing greatness.

  366. Than John the Baptist.

  367. And then in verse 17.

  368. We are.

  369. We see that.

  370. That Jesus.

  371. Is greater than Moses.

  372. Moses.

  373. Moses was the man.

  374. He wrote the first five books.

  375. Of the Old Testament.

  376. The law.

  377. God.

  378. God delivered.

  379. Israel.

  380. Out of the slavery.

  381. To Egypt.

  382. Under the leadership.

  383. Of Moses.

  384. God.

  385. Gave.

  386. Moses.

  387. The Ten Commandments.

  388. On Mount Sinai.

  389. When God made a covenant.

  390. With Israel.

  391. That God.

  392. Would be.

  393. Their God.

  394. In Israel.

  395. Would be.

  396. His people.

  397. It was only by God's grace.

  398. That he would do.

  399. Such a thing.

  400. It's not on the basis.

  401. Of anything.

  402. That Israel had done.

  403. God had chosen them.

  404. By his grace.

  405. But.

  406. But Israel.

  407. Failed.

  408. To keep the covenant.

  409. That God had established.

  410. They failed.

  411. To keep the law.

  412. That was given.

  413. By Moses.

  414. But God.

  415. Had a succession.

  416. Plan of grace.

  417. In place.

  418. He had it in place.

  419. All along.

  420. The old covenant.

  421. Was superseded.

  422. By the new covenant.

  423. Grace upon grace.

  424. The law.

  425. Was given through Moses.

  426. Grace.

  427. And truth.

  428. Came through Jesus Christ.

  429. Now in the gospel of John.

  430. This is the first time.

  431. In verse 17.

  432. Jesus Christ is named.

  433. But there's something.

  434. Even more.

  435. Spectacular.

  436. Going on here.

  437. The little phrase.

  438. Grace and truth.

  439. In the language.

  440. Of the new testament.

  441. Is actually.

  442. Capturing something.

  443. From the language.

  444. Of the old testament.

  445. Something that had been.

  446. Repeated over.

  447. And over.

  448. And over again.

  449. Something that.

  450. Was repeated.

  451. In God.

  452. Had actually.

  453. Said about himself.

  454. Grace and truth.

  455. Is actually.

  456. A translation.

  457. Of.

  458. God's.

  459. Steadfast.

  460. Love.

  461. And faithfulness.

  462. And why that is.

  463. Significant.

  464. Is this.

  465. God.

  466. Appeared to Moses.

  467. In Exodus.

  468. In Exodus 34.

  469. Six through eight.

  470. And God.

  471. Proclaimed himself.

  472. To Moses.

  473. As he went by Moses.

  474. He had.

  475. He had put Moses.

  476. In a cleft of a rock.

  477. And he couldn't see his glory.

  478. Straight away.

  479. So God.

  480. Passes him by.

  481. And.

  482. But God.

  483. Declares himself.

  484. Among other things.

  485. Slow to anger.

  486. Full of mercy.

  487. Abounding.

  488. Full of.

  489. Steadfast.

  490. Love.

  491. And faithfulness.

  492. And what we are being shown here.

  493. Is that Jesus.

  494. The word incarnate.

  495. Is.

  496. The Lord incarnate.

  497. Abounding.

  498. In steadfast.

  499. Love.

  500. And faithfulness.

  501. In the flesh.

  502. Grace and truth.

  503. Moses.

  504. Was putting a cleft of a rock.

  505. Because he couldn't handle.

  506. The surpassing greatness.

  507. Of God.

  508. Going by.

  509. What this means is.

  510. Jesus is greater than Moses.

  511. God.

  512. Eternal.

  513. Abounding.

  514. In steadfast.

  515. Love.

  516. And faithfulness.

  517. The maker.

  518. And keeper.

  519. Of covenants.

  520. He has come.

  521. In the flesh.

  522. Do you see.

  523. His surpassing.

  524. Greatness.

  525. Here.

  526. In verse.

  527. 15 and 17.

  528. Let me ask you.

  529. Three questions.

  530. Is.

  531. The incarnate.

  532. Word.

  533. Jesus Christ.

  534. Greater than.

  535. Less than.

  536. Or equal to.

  537. John the Baptist.

  538. Amen.

  539. Is.

  540. Jesus Christ.

  541. Wonderful.

  542. Counselor.

  543. Mighty God.

  544. Everlasting.

  545. Father.

  546. Prince of Peace.

  547. Is he greater than.

  548. Less than.

  549. Or equal to.

  550. Moses.

  551. Jesus.

  552. Amen.

  553. Amen.

  554. Is.

  555. The king of kings.

  556. And lord of lords.

  557. Greater.

  558. Less than.

  559. Or equal to.

  560. You.

  561. Greater than.

  562. He's greater than us all.

  563. And what we see here.

  564. Is that.

  565. His surpassing.

  566. Greatness.

  567. Is.

  568. Because.

  569. He is.

  570. God.

  571. In.

  572. The flesh.

  573. The baby.

  574. In the feeding trough.

  575. Was.

  576. God.

  577. Eternal.

  578. Full of.

  579. Steadfast.

  580. Love.

  581. And.

  582. Faithfulness.

  583. The maker.

  584. Of a new covenant.

  585. Come to rescue.

  586. Us.

  587. Do you have an amen.

  588. So now.

  589. We move on to.

  590. seeing His seeable glory.

  591. We've seen His super grace

  592. towards you and me.

  593. We have seen His surpassing greatness

  594. greater than you and me.

  595. And now, let's behold His seeable glory.

  596. This is in verses 14 and 18.

  597. Again,

  598. it's extraordinary.

  599. Verses 14 and 18

  600. make an extraordinary claim

  601. about the Christian faith.

  602. And if you're new to the Christian faith,

  603. in order to become a Christian,

  604. you're going to have to own this,

  605. believe this.

  606. And the Word became flesh.

  607. One commentator that I read this week

  608. said that this is John

  609. putting the incarnation

  610. of the second person of the Trinity

  611. in the most blunt of words.

  612. And the Word became flesh.

  613. It's kind of like this.

  614. And the Word took on human meat.

  615. That kind of bluntness.

  616. The Word became a man.

  617. 100% God became 100% human,

  618. yet without sin.

  619. And this is one of the glorious wonders

  620. of Christmas,

  621. that God became a man.

  622. We sang it just moments ago.

  623. The second verse of

  624. Hark the Herald Angels Sing.

  625. Christ by highest.

  626. You know, I'd sing it for you

  627. because I'm one of two crooners

  628. in the room.

  629. But I shan't.

  630. Christ by highest heaven adored.

  631. Christ the everlasting Lord.

  632. Late in time, behold Him come.

  633. Galatians 4.4.

  634. Offspring of the virgin's womb.

  635. Veiled in flesh,

  636. the Godhead.

  637. Behold.

  638. See.

  639. Hail,

  640. the incarnate deity.

  641. Pleased as man with men to dwell.

  642. Jesus,

  643. our

  644. God with us.

  645. Emmanuel.

  646. Hark the Herald Angels Sing.

  647. Glory to the newborn King.

  648. It's a wonder.

  649. It's amazing.

  650. And

  651. this,

  652. the Word became flesh.

  653. And the next phrase is,

  654. and dwelt among us.

  655. Literally,

  656. that will read,

  657. He pitched His tent among us.

  658. And we're to think about how God in the Old Testament

  659. pitched His tent with His people in the wilderness.

  660. How God would descend in His cloud of glory

  661. and enter the tabernacle,

  662. which was this really fancy, elaborate tent of God's design

  663. in order for God to dwell in with His people.

  664. So God came to dwell with His people in a tent.

  665. And we're being told here,

  666. God came to dwell again with His people

  667. in a tent of humanity,

  668. in the flesh.

  669. And He remains in the flesh.

  670. That's amazing.

  671. And then John said,

  672. we beheld His glory.

  673. John and the disciples

  674. saw the glory

  675. of the incarnate God

  676. in His human tent.

  677. His glory on display

  678. when we go through the book of John.

  679. We'll be in it for several months

  680. in 2026.

  681. Lord willing.

  682. And what we'll see is the glory

  683. of Christ

  684. on display

  685. in a variety of different ways.

  686. He will perform seven signs

  687. through the gospel of John.

  688. And each one shows us His glory.

  689. But the distinct

  690. and brightest glory

  691. of the gospel of John

  692. comes at the end

  693. when the one and only Son

  694. dies on the cross.

  695. That is the glory of glories

  696. of the Son

  697. that they beheld.

  698. God in the flesh

  699. the maker of everything

  700. the uncreated creator

  701. no beginning

  702. taking on flesh

  703. would die.

  704. Glory

  705. for sinners like you and me.

  706. Spectacular display

  707. of glory on the cross

  708. for those who have eyes to see.

  709. So what we see here

  710. is absolutely stunning.

  711. John and his disciples

  712. seeing the glory of the Son

  713. the seeable glory of the Son.

  714. And now we turn

  715. to verse 18.

  716. These two verses are related.

  717. No one has ever seen God.

  718. John starts.

  719. He's talking about

  720. the first person of the Trinity.

  721. No one has ever

  722. seen God's face

  723. in fullness.

  724. Moses

  725. Joshua

  726. Isaiah

  727. Daniel

  728. had glimpses of God.

  729. They had shielded views

  730. of God.

  731. Even the six winged

  732. seraphim

  733. in God's presence

  734. shield their eyes

  735. with a pair of their wings

  736. so as not to look

  737. directly at the glory

  738. of the first person

  739. of the Trinity.

  740. Exodus 33.

  741. 20.

  742. God says to Moses

  743. you cannot see

  744. my face and live.

  745. But that all changed.

  746. That all changed

  747. with the birth of Jesus.

  748. The word become flesh.

  749. You know this song.

  750. Mary did you know?

  751. Mary did you know

  752. that your baby boy

  753. would one day

  754. walk on water?

  755. Mary did you know

  756. that your baby boy

  757. would save

  758. our sons and daughters?

  759. Did you know

  760. that your baby boy

  761. has come to make you new?

  762. Mary he came for you.

  763. This child that you delivered

  764. will soon deliver you.

  765. Mary did you know

  766. that your baby boy

  767. will give sight

  768. to the blind man?

  769. Glory.

  770. Mary did you know

  771. that your baby boy

  772. would calm a storm

  773. with his hand?

  774. Glory.

  775. did you know

  776. that your baby boy

  777. has walked

  778. where angels trod

  779. and when you kiss

  780. your little baby

  781. you've kissed

  782. the face of God?

  783. Mary did you know

  784. that your baby boy

  785. is the Lord

  786. of all creation?

  787. Glory.

  788. Mary did you know

  789. that your baby boy

  790. will one day

  791. rule the nations?

  792. Come Lord Jesus.

  793. Did you know

  794. that your baby boy

  795. was heaven's perfect lamb

  796. and the sleeping child

  797. you're holding

  798. is the great I am?

  799. How about that

  800. for glory?

  801. Spectacular.

  802. And then we read this.

  803. For God who said

  804. let light shine

  805. out of darkness

  806. has shown in our hearts

  807. to give the light

  808. of the knowledge

  809. of the glory of God

  810. in the face

  811. of Jesus Christ.

  812. You see

  813. the word incarnate

  814. is shining

  815. in the face

  816. of Jesus Christ.

  817. Life.

  818. We read

  819. in 18

  820. no one has ever seen God

  821. the only God.

  822. It's the same

  823. word

  824. in verse 14

  825. being used.

  826. Glory as of the only

  827. son from the father

  828. the only God

  829. and the only son

  830. it's one of a kind

  831. from the father.

  832. It's the same

  833. language used

  834. in John 3 16

  835. for God so loved

  836. the world

  837. that he gave

  838. his one of a kind

  839. son

  840. that whoever

  841. believes in him

  842. shall not perish

  843. but have eternal life.

  844. He's one of a kind

  845. because he's totally

  846. God

  847. and totally man

  848. the perfect mediator

  849. between God

  850. and man.

  851. And this

  852. one of a kind

  853. son

  854. who's at the father's side

  855. it's getting back

  856. at this relationship

  857. between father and son

  858. that was in place

  859. at the beginning

  860. of creation.

  861. That little phrase

  862. at the father's side

  863. was used of

  864. the disciple

  865. of John

  866. leaning on

  867. Jesus' chest

  868. at the dinner.

  869. It's a picture

  870. of closeness

  871. of relational

  872. intimacy.

  873. intimacy.

  874. This

  875. enfleshed

  876. second person

  877. of the Trinity

  878. Jesus

  879. who has this

  880. relationship

  881. with God

  882. the father

  883. he has

  884. made

  885. seeable

  886. the

  887. never before

  888. seen

  889. God.

  890. Eternal

  891. the uncreated

  892. creator.

  893. covenant

  894. maker

  895. and keeper.

  896. The God

  897. of steadfast

  898. love

  899. and faithfulness

  900. can now

  901. be seen

  902. because

  903. he's been

  904. made known.

  905. The son

  906. has made

  907. known

  908. the father.

  909. Philip

  910. in

  911. John 14

  912. says

  913. have we seen

  914. the father?

  915. Can you show us

  916. the father?

  917. And Jesus

  918. says

  919. if you've seen

  920. me

  921. you've seen

  922. the father.

  923. father.

  924. He is

  925. the exact

  926. representation

  927. of him.

  928. He's the

  929. radiance

  930. of the

  931. glory

  932. of God.

  933. He is

  934. the visible

  935. unseen

  936. God.

  937. He is

  938. a wonder

  939. and he

  940. is shining

  941. into

  942. the darkness.

  943. You can think

  944. about it

  945. this way.

  946. Jesus

  947. is preaching

  948. God the

  949. father

  950. with an

  951. incarnate

  952. sermon.

  953. this word

  954. of being

  955. made known

  956. is where

  957. we get

  958. exegesis

  959. from.

  960. It means

  961. to explain

  962. to draw

  963. out

  964. to bring

  965. out the

  966. nuance

  967. and the

  968. wonders

  969. of something.

  970. And so

  971. you can be

  972. thinking this

  973. as Jesus

  974. the son

  975. narrates

  976. God the

  977. father.

  978. He makes

  979. him known.

  980. It's

  981. absolutely

  982. wonderful.

  983. You see

  984. both 14

  985. and 15

  986. both

  987. point to

  988. the one

  989. and only

  990. son.

  991. The one

  992. and only

  993. God.

  994. And both

  995. are talking

  996. about this

  997. making known

  998. of God.

  999. The word

  1000. became flesh

  1001. in order

  1002. to make

  1003. known

  1004. the unseen

  1005. God.

  1006. The God

  1007. of steadfast

  1008. love and

  1009. faithfulness.

  1010. And that

  1011. glory is

  1012. best seen

  1013. at the

  1014. cross.

  1015. But

  1016. what?

  1017. You say

  1018. how can I

  1019. see his

  1020. glory today?

  1021. I mean

  1022. John

  1023. we

  1024. behold his

  1025. glory.

  1026. They were

  1027. they saw him

  1028. they walked

  1029. with him.

  1030. They saw him

  1031. raise the

  1032. dead.

  1033. They saw him

  1034. on the cross.

  1035. They saw him

  1036. after his

  1037. resurrection.

  1038. They saw him

  1039. their eyewitnesses.

  1040. How are we

  1041. to behold

  1042. his glory?

  1043. glory.

  1044. The gospel

  1045. of John

  1046. all of its

  1047. pages are

  1048. glory pages.

  1049. Are revelation

  1050. after revelation

  1051. of the glory

  1052. of the son.

  1053. The unique

  1054. glory culminating

  1055. in his death

  1056. and resurrection.

  1057. That's where we

  1058. look.

  1059. Right here.

  1060. That's where we'll

  1061. see his glory.

  1062. Show me your glory.

  1063. And then we'll

  1064. read it.

  1065. For the months

  1066. to come we're

  1067. going to get

  1068. into the gospel

  1069. of John

  1070. and we're

  1071. going to be

  1072. beholding the

  1073. glory of the

  1074. son.

  1075. So come

  1076. Sunday after

  1077. Sunday

  1078. and we will

  1079. behold his

  1080. glory together.

  1081. Behold it.

  1082. Believe in him

  1083. and we will

  1084. live.

  1085. By the way

  1086. the Holy Spirit

  1087. the third person

  1088. of the Trinity

  1089. he's not left

  1090. out of all this.

  1091. What he is

  1092. eager to do

  1093. is he is eager

  1094. to spotlight

  1095. the son.

  1096. The second person

  1097. of the Trinity

  1098. because salvation

  1099. is found in no

  1100. one else.

  1101. And like Moses

  1102. we respond

  1103. by saying

  1104. show us your

  1105. glory.

  1106. Help us to see.

  1107. We want to be

  1108. changed.

  1109. Do you want

  1110. to see his

  1111. glory?

  1112. Do you want

  1113. to be changed?

  1114. Do you want

  1115. the life

  1116. that he alone

  1117. can give?

  1118. Are you

  1119. feeling like

  1120. a dried out

  1121. Christmas tree?

  1122. If it's not

  1123. today

  1124. he probably

  1125. will in

  1126. February.

  1127. Show me

  1128. your glory

  1129. and when he

  1130. shows you

  1131. his glory

  1132. it's his

  1133. grace on

  1134. display

  1135. and it is

  1136. a life

  1137. giving

  1138. grace.

  1139. Show me

  1140. your glory.

  1141. behold

  1142. the

  1143. incarnate

  1144. word

  1145. shining

  1146. his

  1147. super

  1148. grace

  1149. superseding

  1150. grace

  1151. super

  1152. abounding

  1153. grace

  1154. that gives

  1155. life

  1156. his

  1157. surpassing

  1158. greatness

  1159. he's

  1160. greater than

  1161. John the

  1162. Baptist

  1163. he's

  1164. greater than

  1165. Moses

  1166. and he's

  1167. greater than

  1168. you and

  1169. me

  1170. and his

  1171. seeable

  1172. glory.

  1173. The gospel

  1174. of John

  1175. puts the

  1176. glory of

  1177. Christ

  1178. on display

  1179. again

  1180. and again

  1181. and again

  1182. and the

  1183. most spectacular

  1184. fashion will

  1185. take place

  1186. at his

  1187. cross.

  1188. He's

  1189. always

  1190. shining.

  1191. This

  1192. child

  1193. born to

  1194. us

  1195. this

  1196. son

  1197. given

  1198. to us

  1199. is the

  1200. true

  1201. light

  1202. that

  1203. brings

  1204. light

  1205. and

  1206. life

  1207. into

  1208. our

  1209. darkness.

  1210. Merry

  1211. Christmas.

  1212. Let us

  1213. pray.

  1214. Lord

  1215. Jesus

  1216. we love

  1217. it when

  1218. you steal

  1219. the show

  1220. and there's

  1221. no stealing.

  1222. because you

  1223. are due

  1224. rightfully

  1225. yours

  1226. all glory

  1227. and power

  1228. majesty

  1229. and might.

  1230. God

  1231. would you

  1232. give us

  1233. hearts

  1234. that have

  1235. received your

  1236. fullness

  1237. grace upon

  1238. grace

  1239. that we

  1240. would be

  1241. full of

  1242. life

  1243. and

  1244. whether

  1245. that's this

  1246. coming

  1247. Thursday

  1248. or this

  1249. coming

  1250. Friday

  1251. that you

  1252. would be

  1253. the

  1254. controlling

  1255. center

  1256. of our

  1257. life

  1258. and

  1259. because

  1260. you

  1261. and

  1262. your

  1263. grace

  1264. are at

  1265. the

  1266. center

  1267. of our

  1268. life

  1269. we

  1270. would

  1271. be

  1272. enlivened.

  1273. Would you

  1274. give us

  1275. life?

  1276. God we're

  1277. so grateful

  1278. to gather
