  1. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  2. Amen, and good morning once again.

  3. It's that time of year again to get ready for a new year.

  4. And so we're passing from 2025 and we're moving into 2026,

  5. and it's a great time to kind of reflect on what is taking place in 2025

  6. and to anticipate what is going to happen in 2026.

  7. And so maybe some of your highlights from 2025 have been some movies you've seen

  8. maybe it's some music you've listened to,

  9. maybe it's a vacation that you went on,

  10. or maybe there are some lowlights to 2025 that you're just so glad you're moving on from.

  11. Maybe you've got some bad news.

  12. And as we turn to 2026, we move from reflection to anticipation,

  13. maybe there's some things that you're looking forward to.

  14. Maybe there's a movie coming out.

  15. Maybe there's a show that's going to drop.

  16. Maybe that you've got a book that you're wanting to read.

  17. I've been given a book that I can't help.

  18. I am really looking forward to cutting through it.

  19. 2026, what does it hold, right?

  20. Maybe there's things that are going to happen where something's going to be painful in 2026.

  21. Maybe it's a move.

  22. Maybe it's someone who's ill right now.

  23. It's going to go from bad to worse.

  24. What I want to help you do this morning is just not reflect and anticipate 2026.

  25. I want to help move your gaze Godward.

  26. But I also need some new artwork in my office.

  27. So here's the plan.

  28. Everybody, I hope you have a bulletin.

  29. The bulletin is this.

  30. As you can see, I'm going to be using the whiteboard this morning.

  31. I'm going to draw a diagram.

  32. And there's two reasons why I'm drawing this diagram.

  33. I need artwork in my office.

  34. And so it's just kind of bland.

  35. It's kind of blasé.

  36. And so what I'm going to have you do is kind of follow my lead, write this diagram, and then give it to me afterwards.

  37. I'm going to have you sign it and either leave it in your pew or hand it to me.

  38. If you want to keep it, take a picture of it with your phone.

  39. But if you're a child in the room, you're not going to King's Kids today, I need you to draw this picture with me and then give it to me.

  40. Okay?

  41. So this is very much I am in need of artwork in my office.

  42. If you need a bulletin, would you raise your hand?

  43. Or you need a pen?

  44. Would you raise your hand?

  45. We've got some people from our Connect team to help out with that.

  46. Anybody?

  47. Okay.

  48. All right.

  49. But the primary reason why we're doing this is to move your gaze towards your God and move from manger to mission.

  50. And so this morning, the way I'm going to do that is going to highlight five distinct features of God's glory plan to make disciples of all the nations.

  51. So five distinct features.

  52. I'm going to draw them so that you can follow with me.

  53. I hope they'll kind of sink in for you.

  54. So here's what I'm going to be arguing.

  55. The triune God is presently, actively at work in our world making disciples, gathering for him worshipers of his name.

  56. He's doing that right now.

  57. So here's the argument.

  58. Here's what I'm trying to convince you of.

  59. Let's join him.

  60. Let's join him in what he is doing.

  61. Let's do this together as a church.

  62. Let's join our great triune God in his global work of gathering worshipers in his name.

  63. And so with all that said, let's move to the first feature of this.

  64. And it is, this is a, number one, this is a triune plan.

  65. This big plan for the fullness of time is a triune plan.

  66. So I'm going to ask, what's distinct feature number one?

  67. And you're going to say triune.

  68. What's distinct feature number one?

  69. It's a triune plan.

  70. So when we're talking about triune, we're talking about the triune God over all things.

  71. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, three distinct persons, each are fully God, one God.

  72. So three eternally existent people of the Godhead, each are fully God.

  73. There is one God, there is one God, that is kind of the biblical idea of what the Trinity is.

  74. And in Ephesians chapter 1, verses 3 through 14, we have the Trinity.

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  75. In verse 3, you might not have seen it.

  76. Blessed be the God and Father, first person of the Trinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ, second person of the Trinity,

  77. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.

  78. That spiritual blessing, it's probably better translated, spirit blessing.

  79. Spirit given blessing.

  80. So here in verse 3, we have a Trinity sighting.

  81. But it doesn't stop there.

  82. There's more.

  83. And so if you look at verses 4 through 6,

  84. even as He, God the Father, first person of the Trinity,

  85. chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,

  86. that we should be holy and blameless before Him in love,

  87. He predestined to us.

  88. So here we have God the Father who is ordaining our salvation,

  89. choosing us and predestining us,

  90. electing us.

  91. It is His glorious work in our salvation.

  92. So God the Father ordains our salvation from before the foundation of the world.

  93. This is deep waters theologically.

  94. It's a beauty to it.

  95. It's His sovereign grace at work.

  96. So in verses 4 through 6,

  97. we see the first person of the Trinity getting,

  98. kind of getting some air time.

  99. And then in verses 7 through 12,

  100. the focus shifts from God the Father to God the Son.

  101. And in verses 7 through 12,

  102. we see the Son accomplishing what God has ordained,

  103. God the Father has ordained.

  104. And so we have phrases like this.

  105. In verse 7,

  106. in Him,

  107. the beloved,

  108. verse 6,

  109. we have redemption through His blood.

  110. So it's the Son accomplishing what God the Father has ordained.

  111. The word redemption,

  112. by the way,

  113. means to purchase someone from slavery at a price,

  114. at a ransom price.

  115. Do you remember what Jesus said in Mark 10, 45?

  116. I came not to be served,

  117. but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for many,

  118. to buy sinners back from slavery to sin,

  119. to set them free.

  120. And so what we see in verses 7 through 12

  121. is this time and again emphasis on what the Son has done.

  122. And so Jesus has accomplished our salvation by ransoming us.

  123. And so another way to talk about it is

  124. those who are living in the domain of darkness

  125. have been transferred into the kingdom of the beloved Son

  126. through the redemption that's in His blood,

  127. through the forgiveness that comes through Him.

  128. And so the Son has accomplished what God the Father has ordained.

  129. And then in verses 13 through 14,

  130. the focus shifts to the Holy Spirit.

  131. And so in verses 13 and 14,

  132. we see in Him you also,

  133. when you heard the word of the truth,

  134. the gospel of your salvation,

  135. and believed in Him,

  136. you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  137. who is the guarantee of our inheritance

  138. until we acquire possession of it.

  139. Now there is a little bit of a risk

  140. when you hear the word sealed by the Holy Spirit,

  141. you start thinking like silicone caulk

  142. and kind of doing kind of window work

  143. or kind of sealing your kitchen sink

  144. onto your kind of cabinet top.

  145. That's not the kind of sealing we're talking about.

  146. What we're talking about is a signet ring sealing

  147. from God Himself.

  148. The Holy Spirit is sealing you,

  149. marking you as belonging to the triune God.

  150. You're His.

  151. And so it's a guarantee

  152. that we are His possession,

  153. that we belong to Him.

  154. And that guarantees not only who we belong to,

  155. but it guarantees the inheritance to come.

  156. And that's the work of the Holy Spirit.

  157. So what the Holy Spirit is doing,

  158. the Holy Spirit is applying

  159. the finished work of Christ,

  160. that Christ accomplished,

  161. to us in order to fulfill

  162. what God His Father has ordained.

  163. So it is a whole kind of triune working of salvation.

  164. This plan, it's a triune plan.

  165. You see it?

  166. Is there a little amen?

  167. Okay.

  168. Who likes jazz?

  169. All right.

  170. Imagine a jazz trio.

  171. Joodle-le-peep-ba-peep.

  172. A saxophonist like Ryan Cook's.

  173. Wee-da-peep-beep.

  174. Wee-da-peep-beep.

  175. And then you have a guy on the drums.

  176. T-t-t-pa-te-te-te-peep-erp.

  177. And then you have a guy on the bass.

  178. B-ga-jig-a-de-ba-ga-jig-a-doo.

  179. And so these three musicians

  180. are working together,

  181. bringing about jazz music.

  182. The thing about jazz music is it's spontaneous.

  183. The working of the triune God

  184. is a plan that was established

  185. before the foundation of the world.

  186. And they are working together in harmony

  187. in order to bring about

  188. the rescuing of sinners

  189. for the glory of God.

  190. It is music to our souls.

  191. This is the good news.

  192. This is gospel good.

  193. So we start with this big plan of God, right?

  194. This God's plan for the fullness of time.

  195. And the first thing you need to do,

  196. it's a triune plan.

  197. All right.

  198. Second.

  199. Second.

  200. I need you to turn now.

  201. Oh, I should have told you this.

  202. I'm sorry to do this to you.

  203. You're going to want to make sure

  204. this is sideways.

  205. Yes.

  206. So I don't want you to, like,

  207. cross out the Trinity in a bad way.

  208. But think about this

  209. as the triune God up here.

  210. And now I'm going to have you

  211. put an arrow like this.

  212. You want to leave room on either side.

  213. Okay?

  214. So the second feature

  215. is that this is a big plan.

  216. And do a big arrow like that.

  217. Sorry about messing up your diagram.

  218. Now when I draw a picture like that

  219. and say it's a big plan,

  220. you say how big is it?

  221. It's a big plan.

  222. It's a God-sized big plan.

  223. It's not a Mike-sized big plan.

  224. It's a God-sized big plan.

  225. This is a big plan.

  226. And it's big in two ways.

  227. Scope of it, it's all time.

  228. And the scale of it is all things.

  229. So it's scope and scale big.

  230. Bigger than you, bigger than me.

  231. And let me just show you

  232. where I find that in Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  233. It's in verse 10.

  234. Nine, making known to us

  235. the mystery of his will

  236. according to his purpose

  237. which he set forth in Christ

  238. as a plan for the fullness of time.

  239. All of time.

  240. To unite all things in him.

  241. In Christ.

  242. Things in heaven and things on earth.

  243. So this is a big plan.

  244. And it's a big plan

  245. in terms of scope and scale.

  246. The fullness of time.

  247. When you think of your time

  248. like I was born in 1991.

  249. It's a joke.

  250. I was born in 71.

  251. And I have a start date.

  252. God and his plan

  253. doesn't have a start date.

  254. It is,

  255. this plan is from eternity to eternity.

  256. It's a big plan.

  257. And it begins and ends with God.

  258. And this plan,

  259. it encapsulates all of human history.

  260. And you can sum up human history

  261. in three words.

  262. Creation,

  263. fall,

  264. redemption,

  265. consummation.

  266. When God brings everything together

  267. in the end.

  268. Creation,

  269. fall,

  270. redemption,

  271. consummation.

  272. God's plan for the fullness of time

  273. captures it all.

  274. And so the whole Bible

  275. captures God's plan

  276. for the fullness of time

  277. from Genesis to Revelation.

  278. And so God's plan

  279. to gather disciples for himself

  280. for the glory of his name,

  281. it's a big plan.

  282. All time.

  283. Eternity past,

  284. eternity future,

  285. creation,

  286. fall,

  287. redemption,

  288. consummation.

  289. And the scale of it

  290. involves all things.

  291. In heaven and on earth,

  292. God has a plan

  293. for all time

  294. to unite all things.

  295. That includes

  296. all eight plus billion people

  297. on the earth right now.

  298. And God will be glorified

  299. when a number

  300. of those eight billion people

  301. are worshiping him

  302. for eternity.

  303. And then he will also

  304. be glorified

  305. when a portion

  306. of that eight billion people

  307. on the planet right now

  308. are under his torment,

  309. under his wrath

  310. for eternity.

  311. God will be glorified

  312. regardless.

  313. He'll be exalted.

  314. He'll be praised.

  315. He'll be honored.

  316. His justice will prevail.

  317. And this idea

  318. of uniting all things

  319. in his name,

  320. there's this sense

  321. of bringing it together.

  322. There being this sense

  323. of reconciliation.

  324. There being this sense

  325. of full and final

  326. and forever shalom.

  327. Our relationship with God

  328. and with ourselves

  329. and each other

  330. and with all of creation.

  331. This plan ultimately

  332. is aimed at bringing shalom

  333. as far as the curse is found.

  334. It's to unite all things

  335. in him.

  336. Now, when you think about

  337. big plans for your life,

  338. you might be thinking

  339. marriage.

  340. Our marriages

  341. typically span decades.

  342. You might be thinking

  343. about raising children

  344. because raising children

  345. isn't just about 18 years.

  346. We all,

  347. if you're beyond that,

  348. you know that.

  349. And then there's

  350. grandchildren, right?

  351. Maybe you're thinking

  352. about your career.

  353. Your career will span decades.

  354. Maybe you're thinking

  355. about your retirement.

  356. So when you hit that,

  357. you know,

  358. 68, 70,

  359. 70-something mark,

  360. you're able to say,

  361. you know what,

  362. we were saving

  363. for the last 50 years

  364. and we were just

  365. putting away things

  366. year after year after year

  367. and over those five decades,

  368. we just kind of built,

  369. built, built our nest egg

  370. and maybe you're

  371. on the other side of it

  372. in your retirement right now

  373. and you're kind of like,

  374. we're benefiting

  375. from that saving

  376. or you're like,

  377. I'm doing my best

  378. to catch up right now

  379. or maybe you're like,

  380. I'm not even thinking

  381. about my retirement right now.

  382. But what we can do

  383. is we can frame our lives

  384. around our retirements

  385. but you got to understand

  386. that's just a drop

  387. in the bucket

  388. compared to God's eternal plan

  389. for the fullness of time.

  390. It starts to beg the question,

  391. who are you living for?

  392. Are you living for your 70 to 80 years

  393. or are you living in light

  394. of eternity,

  395. God's plan for the fullness of time?

  396. Are you living in light

  397. of not just the scope of all things

  398. but the scale of all things?

  399. Is that in your mindset?

  400. And so what we're talking about here

  401. is God's big plan

  402. and it's way bigger than any of us.

  403. We'll live 70, 80 years, maybe.

  404. This plan has been happening,

  405. unfolding before us

  406. and it'll unfold after us.

  407. Whose plan are you living for?

  408. Whose plan is central

  409. to your thinking

  410. and organizing your life around?

  411. So this is a big plan.

  412. So, so far,

  413. this plan of God

  414. for the fullness of time

  415. to gather from self-worshippers

  416. for the glory of His name,

  417. we've learned it's triune,

  418. Father, Son, Holy Spirit,

  419. and we learned

  420. it is a big plan,

  421. bigger than any one of us.

  422. And that should cause us

  423. to step back a little bit

  424. and say,

  425. whoa,

  426. I'm not that big.

  427. This is God-sized big,

  428. not Mike-sized big,

  429. not fill in your name

  430. in the blank big.

  431. It's bigger than you.

  432. Okay,

  433. the third distinctive feature

  434. right here.

  435. In fact,

  436. this third distinctive feature

  437. is so significant,

  438. I think there are three people

  439. in the room

  440. who have this particular symbol

  441. tattooed on their bodies.

  442. Okay, so here it is.

  443. This is a Christocentric plan.

  444. In the middle of this plan

  445. is Jesus.

  446. So you see the J,

  447. do you see the cross?

  448. And this little arrow

  449. is not a roof,

  450. it points to the resurrection

  451. of Jesus Christ.

  452. So Jesus Christ,

  453. crucified and raised.

  454. This is a Christocentric,

  455. gospel-centered plan

  456. for the fullness of time.

  457. We also know that Jesus,

  458. we saw this in John 1,

  459. 1 through 3,

  460. is the creator of all things.

  461. And we also know that

  462. in Matthew 25,

  463. as well as in Revelation chapter 20,

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  464. it's Jesus who's going to be

  465. the judge of all things.

  466. And so this is a Christocentric plan.

  467. And what I love about this

  468. is how it gets carried out

  469. in this passage

  470. in Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  471. It's a triune plan, yes,

  472. but the focus is on Jesus.

  473. Right now we are living

  474. between the first advent of Jesus

  475. and the second advent of Jesus.

  476. We're living in between

  477. here and here,

  478. if you will.

  479. in terms of a linear timeline.

  480. In verse 7,

  481. we read,

  482. in Him,

  483. Jesus,

  484. we have redemption

  485. through His,

  486. Jesus,

  487. Jesus' blood,

  488. according to the riches

  489. of His grace.

  490. And if you keep going down,

  491. you'll see

  492. Him, Him, Him, Him,

  493. Him, Him, Him, Him, Him,

  494. Him, Him, Him, Him, Him, Him.

  495. In verses 3, 4, and 5,

  496. there's a lot of hymns.

  497. Even as He chose us in Him

  498. before the foundation of the world.

  499. In love,

  500. He predestined us for adoption

  501. to Himself as sons

  502. through Jesus Christ,

  503. according to the purpose

  504. of His will,

  505. to the praise of His glory

  506. of grace,

  507. which He has blessed us

  508. in the beloved,

  509. in Him,

  510. which He lavished upon us.

  511. Verse 8,

  512. in all wisdom and light,

  513. making known to us

  514. the mystery of His will,

  515. according to His purpose,

  516. which He sent forth in Christ

  517. in a plan for the fullness of time

  518. to unite all things in Him,

  519. Jesus Christ,

  520. to unite all things in Him.

  521. In Him,

  522. we have obtained an inheritance.

  523. That's 11.

  524. That's Jesus' hymn.

  525. So this is just full

  526. of references to Jesus.

  527. 7, 3, 4, and 5,

  528. there's a number of them.

  529. Verse 9, verse 10,

  530. verse 11, verse 12,

  531. verse 13,

  532. in Him, in Him, in Him, in Him.

  533. So this redemption,

  534. that this whole plan is about

  535. is accomplished

  536. through Jesus Christ,

  537. through His death

  538. and through His resurrection.

  539. Jesus is the hero

  540. of God's story

  541. for the fullness of time.

  542. In Luke 24,

  543. after Jesus has been raised

  544. from the dead,

  545. He appears to two different groups

  546. of His disciples.

  547. And on both occasions,

  548. it's really interesting

  549. what He tells them.

  550. He tells both of them,

  551. both sets, both situations,

  552. that His coming,

  553. that His death

  554. and His resurrection,

  555. they were in the fulfillment

  556. of these full

  557. and frequent

  558. Old Testament passages

  559. anticipating

  560. the Messiah to come.

  561. That what He was saying

  562. is that the Old Testament

  563. was pointing to Him

  564. in very specific,

  565. unique,

  566. and frequent ways,

  567. and not just to Him,

  568. to His death

  569. and His resurrection.

  570. And so what Jesus says

  571. in Luke 24

  572. is a Christocentric

  573. understanding

  574. of the Old Testament.

  575. that the Old Testament,

  576. many very unique

  577. and frequent ways

  578. are pointing to Him.

  579. And so what this means

  580. is that our Bibles,

  581. all of it,

  582. is some way,

  583. somehow,

  584. pointing to Jesus Christ

  585. because He is

  586. the center of God's plan

  587. for the fullness of time,

  588. His plan of salvation.

  589. He's the hero

  590. of God's story.

  591. When we read in 10,

  592. as a plan for the fullness

  593. of time to unite

  594. all things in Him,

  595. it's the Christ,

  596. Jesus,

  597. who is the shalom maker

  598. on earth.

  599. He's the unifier

  600. of all things.

  601. He brings it all together.

  602. God's plan

  603. of salvation

  604. centers on the person

  605. and work of Jesus Christ

  606. to accomplish it.

  607. That's why we call it

  608. Christocentric.

  609. Christ-centered.

  610. Jesus is the controlling center,

  611. of God's plan

  612. for the fullness of time.

  613. That's why He becomes

  614. our controlling center

  615. when we become Christians,

  616. when we become followers

  617. of Him.

  618. This is good news.

  619. This is what happens.

  620. This is what's been happening,

  621. whether you've been conscious

  622. of it or not.

  623. God has this plan

  624. for the fullness of time,

  625. and Jesus is at the center of it.

  626. You know,

  627. in pretty much

  628. every organization,

  629. you think about

  630. a football team,

  631. football teams have quarterbacks,

  632. orchestras have a lead chair,

  633. a first chair,

  634. theater has,

  635. they have a lead actor

  636. or actress,

  637. a business has a CEO,

  638. and so all of these organizations,

  639. you have a leader.

  640. And then we,

  641. we as a culture,

  642. we love our superheroes,

  643. don't we?

  644. We love Superman,

  645. Batman,

  646. and Wonder Woman.

  647. I'm personally a big Aquaman fan.

  648. We love our superheroes.

  649. There's a reason why

  650. we have this thing in us

  651. for a perfect human being

  652. to save us.

  653. And Jesus is better

  654. than any superhero.

  655. He is the hero of heroes

  656. because he's 100% man,

  657. 100% God,

  658. and he has never sinned.

  659. He has no weaknesses.

  660. There's no kryptonite for Jesus.

  661. He is all glorious

  662. and all powerful.

  663. He is the hero,

  664. the center of God's plan

  665. for the fullness of time.

  666. This is a Christocentric plan.

  667. So it's a big plan.

  668. It's Christocentric.

  669. Okay, everybody,

  670. how are you doing

  671. on your diagram?

  672. So far, so good?

  673. All right.

  674. Do I have some good artwork

  675. coming from my office?

  676. I hope so.

  677. Okay.

  678. Okay, so we've moved this way.

  679. This Christocentric plan,

  680. what it does is

  681. it changes people.

  682. And so the fourth

  683. distinctive feature

  684. is that this is

  685. a disciple-making plan.

  686. It's a people-moving plan.

  687. It's a Matthew 16, 18

  688. church-building plan

  689. in the words of Jesus.

  690. And so it's moving people

  691. from one domain

  692. into another domain.

  693. It's a movement

  694. from eternity to eternity.

  695. And so let me try

  696. to illustrate that for you.

  697. I'm grounding this,

  698. by the way,

  699. in a word.

  700. It's the word we

  701. in verse three.

  702. Blessed be the God

  703. and Father

  704. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  705. who has blessed us,

  706. it's actually the word us,

  707. in Christ

  708. with every spiritual blessing

  709. in the heavenly places.

  710. You see,

  711. we who are blessed

  712. in Christ

  713. were once

  714. under God's curse.

  715. and that dramatically

  716. changed because of

  717. what Jesus has done.

  718. So here's the disciple-making,

  719. people-moving plan.

  720. Before,

  721. we became aware

  722. of who Jesus is

  723. and what he's done for us.

  724. We are living

  725. in the DOD,

  726. not the Department of Defense,

  727. the domain of darkness,

  728. Colossians 1, 13.

  729. Okay?

  730. And we were running.

  731. This is very powerful

  732. artistry right here.

  733. We were running

  734. not to God

  735. but away from him.

  736. And the Bible describes this

  737. as living in darkness.

  738. We were,

  739. Ephesians 2,

  740. 1 through 3,

  741. we were dead

  742. in our trespasses

  743. and sins.

  744. We were following

  745. the prince of the power

  746. of the air.

  747. We were children of wrath

  748. just like everybody else.

  749. We were dead

  750. in our sins.

  751. We had no desire

  752. to live for God.

  753. In fact,

  754. before you became

  755. a Christian,

  756. if you wanted God,

  757. it was usually

  758. because you were trying

  759. to use God

  760. for yourself.

  761. And so we were all living

  762. in the domain

  763. of darkness

  764. and we were dead

  765. in our sins.

  766. We were,

  767. at this point,

  768. underneath the wrath

  769. of the triune God

  770. justly.

  771. And then something happened.

  772. And so,

  773. this disciple making

  774. is a,

  775. not bigger than God.

  776. God is bigger than this.

  777. And what God does

  778. is he brings people

  779. from the domain

  780. of darkness.

  781. He calls them to himself

  782. through Christ,

  783. Holy Spirit drawing them,

  784. and he flips them.

  785. He repose them.

  786. He transforms them.

  787. He gives them new life.

  788. And now,

  789. instead of living

  790. apart from God

  791. and running away from him,

  792. God in his grace

  793. calls us to him

  794. through Christ,

  795. Christ,

  796. and because of Christ's

  797. finished work,

  798. he radically changes us

  799. from within.

  800. He gives us new hearts

  801. that actually want

  802. to live for God now.

  803. And he makes us,

  804. he gives us new life.

  805. And it's by believing

  806. in the person and work

  807. of Jesus Christ.

  808. That's the only way

  809. you go from living

  810. in darkness

  811. to being brought

  812. into the kingdom

  813. of the beloved son.

  814. It's simply by trusting

  815. in the person and work

  816. of Jesus Christ.

  817. That's all that it is.

  818. It's a gift.

  819. You don't work for it.

  820. You can't.

  821. It's by faith.

  822. And the moment that happens,

  823. you're a new creation.

  824. You've been changed.

  825. You've been flipped.

  826. Now,

  827. in another kind of presentation

  828. I do,

  829. I talk about this

  830. as the Copernican revolution

  831. of the soul.

  832. We were once believers

  833. like in the old days

  834. when people thought

  835. that instead of the earth

  836. orbiting the sun,

  837. people thought the sun

  838. orbited the earth.

  839. It was a geocentric view

  840. of the solar system.

  841. But Copernicus helped us

  842. realize that we live

  843. in a heliocentric solar system,

  844. that the earth actually

  845. orbits the sun.

  846. And what happens here is

  847. when we're living this way,

  848. we think that all things

  849. orbit us,

  850. that we're the center

  851. of all things.

  852. But praise be to God,

  853. he gives us new eyes

  854. and a new heart.

  855. And now,

  856. we have Jesus Christ

  857. as the controlling center

  858. of our lives.

  859. And so,

  860. this is what this means.

  861. This is the part

  862. of the illustration

  863. I'm trying to develop

  864. more for us.

  865. And so,

  866. here's what happens.

  867. On this side of Jesus,

  868. someone is living

  869. with Jesus

  870. as the controlling center

  871. of their life.

  872. So,

  873. they're in Jesus' orbit now.

  874. Jesus has always been

  875. at the center.

  876. It's just now that they are

  877. actually functionally

  878. trying to live that out.

  879. Now,

  880. when you have multiple people

  881. living with Jesus

  882. at the center

  883. of their lives,

  884. in the same time,

  885. in the same place,

  886. under the same leadership,

  887. you've got a church.

  888. So,

  889. we are a people

  890. with Jesus

  891. as the controlling center

  892. because we've been

  893. flipped by Jesus.

  894. We've been repoed

  895. by Jesus

  896. and placed together

  897. by the living God.

  898. I've been saying repo a lot.

  899. Do you know

  900. what a repo man is?

  901. A repo man is someone

  902. who's hired by a bank.

  903. Let's say that

  904. this has never happened

  905. in the room,

  906. I'm sure.

  907. You fall behind

  908. on your payments

  909. for your car.

  910. A repo man,

  911. what he does is

  912. he actually steals back

  913. the car

  914. because it belongs

  915. to the bank.

  916. You know,

  917. you default

  918. on your payments

  919. and you get reclaimed

  920. by the bank

  921. and the bank

  922. sends out the repo man.

  923. Jesus is the great repo man.

  924. You defaulted on God,

  925. giving him the glory

  926. that he deserved.

  927. And so God,

  928. in his love for you,

  929. wanted you to be in,

  930. right relationship

  931. with him.

  932. So he sent Jesus

  933. to steal you back

  934. to himself

  935. out of his love

  936. for you.

  937. You got repoed.

  938. If you're a Christian

  939. in the room,

  940. you got repoed.

  941. Repoed by the risen

  942. and reigning Christ.

  943. And so now we live

  944. for him

  945. and we don't do

  946. that individually.

  947. We do that as a church

  948. and we do that together,

  949. together following

  950. our repo man,

  951. Jesus.

  952. And so what we have here,

  953. this people moving plan

  954. is part of God's plan

  955. for the fullness of time.

  956. We are making disciples.

  957. That's why Jesus commands us

  958. to go make disciples

  959. in Matthew 28.

  960. It's not just an original idea.

  961. It's him making a command

  962. because this has been

  963. God's plan all along

  964. to go make disciples

  965. of all nations,

  966. to gather worshipers

  967. for yourself.

  968. So the question becomes,

  969. are you aware of the plan?

  970. Are you joining

  971. in what God is doing

  972. in moving people

  973. from the domain of darkness

  974. into the kingdom

  975. of the beloved son?

  976. Now this process here

  977. is also called sanctification

  978. of growing in Christlikeness

  979. and we're all helping

  980. each other do that.

  981. But this is part

  982. of discipleship.

  983. This is all part

  984. of following Jesus.

  985. How are you presently

  986. participating

  987. in this aspect

  988. of God's plan?

  989. Right now,

  990. how are you

  991. participating

  992. in moving people

  993. towards Jesus?

  994. It's a good question

  995. to ask,

  996. to reflect on,

  997. and then to anticipate

  998. for 2026.

  999. So we've covered

  1000. four of the five.

1001. Will you repeat after me?

  1002. Distinct feature number one

  1003. is a triune plan.

  1004. Distinct feature number two,

  1005. it's a big plan.

  1006. Number three,

  1007. it's a Christocentric plan.

  1008. Number four is a disciple-making plan.

  1009. And number five,

1010. and this tends to be my favorite,

  1011. it's a glory plan.

1012. You know how we were singing Gloria

1013. just a little bit ago?

  1014. It's a glory plan.

  1015. This is really cool

  1016. in this passage.

  1017. Look at verse six.

1018. To the praise of His glorious grace.

1019. To the praise of God the Father,

1020. the first person of the Trinity,

  1021. for ordaining salvation,

1022. praise to His glorious grace.

1023. You see the word glorious?

  1024. Now,

  1025. look at verse 12.

  1026. After talking about

  1027. the work of Jesus,

1028. the second person of the Trinity,

1029. so that we who are the first

  1030. to hope in Christ

1031. might be to the praise

  1032. of His glory.

1033. There's that word glory again,

  1034. but this time,

  1035. after referencing

1036. the work of the second person

  1037. of the Trinity.

  1038. And then,

  1039. after referencing the work

  1040. of the third person

  1041. of the Trinity,

  1042. in verse 14,

1043. to the praise of His glory.

  1044. Glory.

  1045. Glory.

  1046. Glory.

1047. Glory is a wonderful word

  1048. in your Bible.

1049. The Greek word is doxa,

  1050. D-O-X-A.

1051. And the Hebrew word is kabod.

  1052. Just say it.

  1053. Kabod.

  1054. Doesn't it come up?

  1055. He said,

  1056. Kabod.

  1057. Now,

  1058. the word kabod

  1059. actually has,

  1060. as its root,

  1061. it means heavy.

  1062. It means weighty.

  1063. And so,

  1064. to give God

  1065. His kabod,

  1066. His weight,

1067. is to give Him glory.

1068. It's to give Him worship.

  1069. It's to recognize

  1070. who He is

  1071. and what He's doing.

  1072. It's to see His

  1073. kind of like

  1074. accumulative

  1075. kind of weight

  1076. and majesty

1077. across all of who He is.

  1078. John Piper,

  1079. in his book,

  1080. Providence,

  1081. talks about

  1082. God's glory

1083. as not a distinct feature

  1084. of His character,

  1085. but it is the

  1086. accumulative

  1087. kind of

  1088. effect

  1089. of all

  1090. of His

  1091. perfections

  1092. when they are

  1093. seen and valued.

  1094. It's when you

  1095. start to understand

  1096. that God is big

  1097. and He is

  1098. wonderful

  1099. and you start

  1100. understanding

  1101. these different

  1102. kind of

  1103. perfections

  1104. or characteristics

  1105. of God

  1106. and how He has

  1107. been acting

  1108. in human history

  1109. and in your history.

  1110. when you start

  1111. understanding

  1112. who God is

  1113. and what He's doing

  1114. and He's greater

  1115. than you,

1116. you want to give Him

  1117. kabod.

1118. You want to give Him

  1119. doxa.

1120. You want to give Him

  1121. glory.

  1122. And when that glory

  1123. gets visibly

  1124. manifested,

  1125. it's spectacular.

  1126. It can be blinding.

  1127. It's about glory.

  1128. This plan

  1129. is a glory plan.

  1130. It's about making

  1131. worshipers.

  1132. The Westminster

  1133. Catechism

  1134. says it this way,

  1135. the chief end

  1136. of man

  1137. is to glorify

  1138. God

  1139. and enjoy

  1140. Him

  1141. forever.

  1142. Not to us,

  1143. O Lord,

  1144. not to us,

  1145. but to Your name

  1146. give kabod,

  1147. give glory

  1148. because of Your

  1149. steadfast love

  1150. and faithfulness.

  1151. We're seeing

  1152. God's glory a lot.

  1153. There's a reason

  1154. for that

  1155. because He is

  1156. majestic

  1157. and He is

  1158. wonderful.

  1159. This plan

  1160. for the fullness

  1161. of time

  1162. through Christ

  1163. delivers image

  1164. bearers who

  1165. are in the domain

  1166. of darkness

  1167. and transfers

  1168. them into the

  1169. kingdom of the

  1170. beloved Son

  1171. and it

  1172. results

  1173. in God's glory.

  1174. So let me try

  1175. to illustrate it

  1176. this way for you.

  1177. when you have

  1178. people who are

  1179. spiritually dead

  1180. made spiritually

  1181. alive,

  1182. their eternities

  1183. change,

  1184. you're populating.

  1185. You're populating

  1186. heaven

  1187. with worshipers.

  1188. believers.

  1189. And so right

  1190. now,

  1191. we know this

  1192. from Revelation

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  1193. chapter 7,

  1194. all around

  1195. God's throne,

  1196. you have

  1197. myriads of

  1198. people from

  1199. every tribe,

  1200. tongue,

  1201. and nation

  1202. who are giving

  1203. praise and glory

  1204. to our God.

  1205. They're worshiping

  1206. Him.

  1207. They're making

  1208. much of Him.

  1209. And so,

  1210. you know,

  1211. it all starts,

  1212. and we don't

  1213. wait to start

  1214. singing to God

  1215. until glory.

  1216. We're worshiping

  1217. Him now,

  1218. right?

  1219. We're delighting

  1220. in things that

  1221. are very different

  1222. than when we were

  1223. living in the

  1224. domain of darkness

  1225. because our hearts

  1226. have been changed.

  1227. That's what the

  1228. gospel does.

  1229. It radically

  1230. changes our hearts.

  1231. It radically

  1232. changes us.

  1233. God gets the

  1234. glory for what

  1235. He's been doing

  1236. in us.

  1237. You know,

  1238. whenever you

  1239. have an

  1240. organization,

  1241. a team,

  1242. a band,

  1243. you have

  1244. objectives.

  1245. You're trying

  1246. to accomplish

  1247. something.

  1248. There's an aim.

  1249. There is a goal.

  1250. There's a telos,

  1251. a reason for

  1252. your being.

  1253. And this is our

  1254. reason for our

  1255. being.

  1256. God's glory,

  1257. His worship,

  1258. His praise.

  1259. I was telling

  1260. someone yesterday

  1261. on the phone

  1262. that worship

  1263. actually comes from

  1264. an old English word

  1265. that means

  1266. worth-ship,

  1267. giving God

  1268. His weight,

  1269. giving Him His

  1270. due,

  1271. helping people

  1272. see Him.

  1273. Imagine this.

  1274. Has anybody

  1275. been on a night

  1276. flight?

  1277. Yeah,

  1278. you're flying over

  1279. the United States

  1280. at night.

  1281. It's a lot of fun

  1282. because you're

  1283. looking out the

  1284. window and you

  1285. are going through

  1286. just big sections

  1287. of darkness

  1288. darkness and then

  1289. you hit this

  1290. concentrated,

  1291. brilliant light.

  1292. It's a city of

  1293. some sort.

  1294. And big cities

  1295. shine real bright.

  1296. Think of that

  1297. as the worship

  1298. lens with which

  1299. God sees the

  1300. world.

  1301. Not in terms of

  1302. kind of night

  1303. and day,

  1304. but in terms of

  1305. spiritually alive

  1306. or spiritually dead,

  1307. people who are

  1308. giving God

  1309. worship or not.

  1310. When God looks

  1311. down on this

  1312. planet,

  1313. He is seeing

  1314. the brightness,

  1315. the light of

  1316. those He's made

  1317. alive in worshiping

  1318. Him among this

  1319. darkness of dead.

  1320. People who are

  1321. worshiping things

  1322. other than Him.

  1323. And so what God

  1324. is doing is He's

  1325. radically changing

  1326. people's hearts

  1327. through the gospel

  1328. to make worshipers

  1329. for His name.

  1330. And what it sounds

  1331. like is that,

  1332. man, God is very

  1333. self-centered.

  1334. And He is.

  1335. And He has every

  1336. right to be

  1337. because He's God.

  1338. We get to give

  1339. Him the glory

  1340. that's due His

  1341. name.

  1342. One of my

  1343. favorite quotes,

  1344. this is probably

  1345. my favorite quote

  1346. on why there's

  1347. mission is by

  1348. John Piper.

  1349. And he says,

  1350. missions exists

  1351. because the

  1352. worship of God

  1353. does not.

  1354. It's a beautiful

  1355. way to think

  1356. about this.

  1357. And so the idea

  1358. here is we

  1359. mobilize and we

  1360. reach out to

  1361. our neighbors and

  1362. friends and families

  1363. ultimately for the

  1364. worship of God,

  1365. for the glory of

  1366. His name,

  1367. for populating

  1368. the heavenlies

  1369. with worshipers.

  1370. It's a wonder.

  1371. It's a wonder.

  1372. God's plan for the

  1373. fullness of time

  1374. is a glory plan.

  1375. Okay.

  1376. Triune, big,

  1377. Christocentric,

  1378. disciple-making,

  1379. glory.

  1380. These are the five

  1381. distinct features of

  1382. God's plan for the

  1383. fullness of time.

  1384. It moves us from

  1385. manger to mission.

1386. And so just a few

  1387. questions for you

  1388. and then we'll wrap

  1389. it up.

  1390. Question number one.

  1391. Looking back on

  1392. 2025,

  1393. what has God

  1394. personally done in

  1395. your life that you

  1396. can thank Him for?

  1397. What has God done

1398. in your life in 2025

  1399. that you can thank

  1400. Him for?

  1401. I would say,

  1402. take some time today.

  1403. Go for a walk.

  1404. And if you're having

  1405. a hard time thinking

  1406. about things,

1407. ask God to show you.

  1408. God, how have you

  1409. worked in my life

  1410. this past year?

  1411. And then when you

  1412. are shown that,

  1413. give Him thanks for

  1414. that.

  1415. So this exercise is

  1416. one towards

  1417. thankfulness to God.

  1418. God, thank you so

  1419. much for getting me

  1420. through that hard time.

  1421. Thank you so much,

  1422. God, for showing me

1423. that sin in my life

  1424. and helping me

  1425. take a step to

  1426. become more like

  1427. Jesus.

  1428. Thank you, God,

  1429. for my friends.

  1430. Thank you, God,

  1431. for the support.

  1432. Thank you for my

  1433. church.

  1434. Thank you for saving

  1435. this person.

  1436. So there's so much

  1437. that we can be

  1438. thankful for.

  1439. So take some time

  1440. to ask the question,

  1441. God, what have you

  1442. done for me this

  1443. past year?

  1444. So that's reflection.

  1445. Question number two.

  1446. This is a prayerful

  1447. question.

  1448. Looking forward

  1449. into 2026,

  1450. here's what you pray.

  1451. God, would you

  1452. change me?

  1453. No qualifications,

  1454. no limits,

  1455. no reservations,

  1456. no conditions.

  1457. Would you change me?

  1458. Would you conform me

1459. to the image of Jesus?

  1460. Would you make me

1461. holy as he is holy?

1462. Would you do a work

  1463. in me in 2026

1464. that I can look back

  1465. on?

  1466. If you don't return,

1467. I can look back on

1468. and say, all glory be

  1469. to your name.

  1470. Thank you for doing

  1471. this in my life.

  1472. God, would you do

  1473. this work in me?

  1474. Looking forward

  1475. to 2026,

1476. make it a glory prayer.

1477. God, help me to bring

  1478. glory to you

  1479. through a changed life.

  1480. And question number

  1481. three is this.

  1482. It's another

  1483. prayerful question.

  1484. Where are you

  1485. working, God,

  1486. that you would

1487. have me join you in?

  1488. Where are you

  1489. working that I can

  1490. join you,

1491. that I can step in

  1492. and be a part

  1493. of what you're doing?

  1494. If you're married,

  1495. the answer starts here.

  1496. God, what are you

  1497. doing in my,

  1498. the question is,

  1499. what are you doing

  1500. in my spouse's life

1501. and how can I join you

  1502. in what you're doing

  1503. in my spouse's life?

  1504. Or your parent,

1505. God, in each of your

  1506. children, God,

  1507. what are you doing

  1508. in this child's life

1509. and how can I join you

  1510. in what you're doing

1511. in his or her life?

  1512. These are the questions.

  1513. God, what are you

  1514. doing in my midst,

  1515. in my orbit,

1516. that I can be part

1517. of what you are doing?

  1518. If you're a student

  1519. in the room,

  1520. you're middle school

1521. and you're in high school,

  1522. here's a question to ask.

  1523. Think about your friends.

  1524. They're extremely

  1525. important to you.

1526. God, what are you doing

  1527. in my friend's life

1528. and how can I join you

  1529. in what you're doing

  1530. in them?

  1531. It changes the way

  1532. you think about

  1533. your friendships.

  1534. How can I be a part

  1535. of what you're doing

  1536. in my friends?

  1537. Our church,

1538. God, what are you doing

1539. in and through our church

1540. and how can I be

  1541. a part of that?

1542. God, I want to join

1543. in what you are doing.

  1544. So, we end 2025

  1545. and we start 2026

  1546. with a Godward gaze.

  1547. God has a plan

1548. for the fullness of time

1549. to make disciples of Jesus.

  1550. It's a glory plan.

  1551. Now, here's what

1552. I'd like you to do.

  1553. That little diagram

  1554. you just did,

  1555. would you sign it?

  1556. Date it?

1557. And after we're wrapped up,

1558. either bring it to me

1559. or just put it in your pew.

  1560. We'll collect it

  1561. and I'll hang them

1562. this week in my office

  1563. because I need artwork.

1564. But we all also need

1565. to have our gaze renewed

  1566. from manger to mission

1567. and it is a glorious mission.

  1568. I mean, that's why

1569. Jesus went to the manger.

1570. God, I'm going to pray

1571. so that you hang on a cross

1572. so that he would gather

  1573. worshipers for his name

  1574. for eternity.

  1575. Let's pray together.

  1576. God in heaven,

  1577. thank you so much

  1578. for giving us eyes

  1579. to see this plan.

  1580. We are delighted

1581. to be part of what

  1582. you are doing.

1583. God, we confess this morning

  1584. that you don't exist

  1585. for us.

  1586. We exist for you

1587. and we want to bring you

  1588. honor and glory

1589. in all that we do.

  1590. God, we don't know

1591. what you have for us

  1592. in 2026,

  1593. but we would ask

  1594. that you would

  1595. continue to

  1596. make your presence

  1597. known to us,

1598. that you would grow us,

1599. that you would grow us

  1600. individually,

1601. make us more like Jesus

  1602. and you'd grow us

  1603. numerically.

  1604. Not for numbers,

  1605. but for worshipers,

  1606. that you would get

  1607. all praise and glory

  1608. and honor.

  1609. God, would you

  1610. fill us

  1611. with your spirit

  1612. that we would make

  1613. much of Jesus

1614. in all that we do

  1615. for the glory

  1616. of your name.

  1617. Amen.

  1618. Amen.
