  1. Children, you are excused if you haven't been already.

  2. And I am going to be preaching from John chapter 1 verses 19 through 51.

    John 1:19–51

  3. ! It's on page 1053 of your pew Bible.

  4. ! It's the black Bible in your pew.

  5. In the late 80s, U2 released their greatest album of all time,

  6. Joshua Tree.

  7. I still remember hearing, I still haven't found what I'm looking for when I was in high school.

  8. I must have heard that a million times.

  9. In fact, this past week, I watched the music video of I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

  10. There you have him, Bono singing, I still haven't found what I'm looking for,

  11. as he walks through the glimmer, the lights of Las Vegas.

  12. You have the edge on his acoustic guitar and really interesting hat.

  13. And he's walking through and they're all singing.

  14. There are other two guys in the band, don't know them, they were walking around too.

  15. But the point is, they're walking around Las Vegas.

  16. With all of its lights and glamour and gambling, Sin City!

  17. And they keep on singing, but I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

  18. Are you looking for something?

  19. But still haven't found it?

  20. Are you finding something to scratch the itch?

  21. To fill the hole?

  22. To satisfy your soul?

  23. Maybe it's in companionship.

  24. You are so lonely that you think,

  25. if I just get another human being in a relationship, I'll be happy.

  26. It's elusive.

  27. Maybe it's about your reputation.

  28. You want to make a name for yourself.

  29. Or you don't want particular information to get out about yourself.

  30. It's elusive.

  31. Maybe you're trying to scratch the itch, fill the hole with being useful.

  32. For being productive.

  33. But that's elusive too.

  34. Maybe you're trying to satisfy your soul with this longing for peace.

  35. Peace for your kids in the future.

  36. Peace of financial security.

  37. Peace of knowing that your body's just going to be fine.

  38. That you're going to be healthy all the way through.

  39. It's elusive too.

  40. What are you looking for?

  41. This morning we're going to see in John 1, 19 through 15.

  42. It's one big historical account with four scenes.

  43. And these four scenes unfold the answer to the question,

  44. what are you looking for?

  45. And John the evangelist is going to point us again and again to the one that we are looking for.

  46. We're going to see in one of these scenes, Jesus ask this question.

  47. And he's going to ask you this question this morning.

  48. What are you seeking?

  49. What are you looking for?

  50. And then he answers that.

  51. He says, come and see.

  52. He's inviting you to come and find what you're looking for in him.

  53. These four scenes give an unprecedented list of titles and descriptions of who Jesus is.

  54. It's a pile up of his glory.

  55. And it's designed to make your heart rise to him.

  56. And these titles and descriptions belong to Jesus alone.

  57. What are you looking for?

  58. Jesus would say, come and see.

  59. So let's look at the first scene.

  60. It's chapter 1, verses 19 through 28.

  61. And this scene is actually a dialogue between John the Baptist, JTB, and this delegation sent from Jerusalem.

  62. You can see it in verse 19.

  63. And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, who are you?

  64. So what we have here in verses 19 through 28 are two sets of questions.

  65. Now here's what's going on.

  66. The Jews is a reference to the Jews who are in authority in Jerusalem.

  67. And by and large in the Gospel of John, they are Jews who oppose Jesus.

  68. So these Jews have gotten word that there are large crowds of Jews going out to John the Baptist and the Jordan and northern Israel.

  69. And he's baptizing them.

  70. And so they're like, what's going on?

  71. We're going to send a delegation to find out who this guy is and what he is doing.

  72. And so the first set of questions begins in verse 19.

  73. Who are you?

  74. And in verse 20, John the Baptist responds in a little bit surprising way.

  75. He confessed and did not deny, but confessed.

  76. That's emphatic.

  77. He says, I'm not the Christ.

  78. If they were coming looking for the Christ, he is saying, I'm not the Christ.

  79. The Christ is the first title we come across in this scene.

  80. And it means Messiah, the anointed one.

  81. The long looked for king who would sit on David's throne forever.

  82. Well, the questions continue.

  83. Verse 21, they asked him, what then?

  84. Are you Elijah?

  85. Elijah was a really impressive prophet from 2 Kings 2.

  86. 2 Kings 2, Elijah is taken up alive to heaven in a chariot of fire.

  87. And then in Malachi 4, 5, we're told this prophecy that Elijah would return before the great and awesome day of the Lord.

  88. And so what we have in common with the Christ and Elijah are these biblical figures who are being looked forward to coming back.

  89. They're looking for him.

  90. John the Baptist says in verse 21, oh, am I Elijah?

  91. I am not.

  92. And then there's another question.

  93. Verse 21, are you the prophet?

  94. It's another anticipated biblical figure who they are looking forward to.

  95. This time, this prophet is a reference to something that Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 18.15.

  96. God will raise up one like me, Moses says, from among you.

  97. This delegation sent from these Jews who are going to oppose Jesus, they're asking John the Baptist, are you the prophet?

  98. Flat out, no.

  99. And in verse 27, we see this.

  100. Oh, excuse me.

  101. Verse 23.

  102. Verse 22, I apologize.

  103. They reach this point where they're like, okay, John, work with us.

  104. We got to go back.

  105. We got to tell our supervisors.

  106. We got to give them some kind of answer.

  107. So who are you?

  108. And then he finally says in verse 23, I am the voice of the one crying out in the wilderness.

  109. Make straight the way of the Lord as the prophet Isaiah said.

  110. This is Isaiah 40, verse 3.

    Isaiah 40:3

  111. And what he's saying here is, I am the forerunner of the Lord.

  112. When we read here, make straight the way of the Lord, back in your Old Testament in Isaiah, that's all small caps.

  113. That's the way of Yahweh.

  114. The I am.

  115. He is going to go before the way of the Lord.

  116. And so what he's saying is, hey, I am someone you should be looking forward to.

  117. I am that voice in the wilderness making straight the path of Yahweh.

  118. But it doesn't seem as though this delegation hears what he says.

  119. This is another title.

  120. Lord.

  121. It's going to be applied to Jesus.

  122. He is the I am incarnate.

  123. In verse 25, we have a second set of questions.

  124. Actually, just one question.

  125. We move from who he is to what he's doing.

  126. And they want to know, why are you baptizing?

  127. Verse 25.

  128. If you're not the Christ, if you're not Elijah, if you're not the prophet, what are you doing?

  129. Why are you baptizing?

  130. And he answers them in verse 26.

  131. He says, I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know.

  132. He goes on to say, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.

  133. In our common day, that'd be like, hey, I can't even untie his shoelace.

  134. That's how awesome he is.

  135. John the Baptist answers their question by saying, my baptism, me baptizing, it's getting people ready to see the revealing of the one who comes after me.

  136. That's what my baptism is doing.

  137. And you don't recognize the one who stands among you.

  138. You see, the Lord has come now.

  139. And you don't recognize him.

  140. They're not finding what they're looking for.

  141. Kind of curious as to how, what they actually reported when they got back to Jerusalem.

  142. I think it would be like, you know what, we didn't really find anything.

  143. He's not the Christ.

  144. He's not Elijah.

  145. He's not the prophet.

  146. He said something from Isaiah.

  147. What are you looking for?

  148. What we have here is a group of people who are looking for something, but they're not finding it.

  149. And we're given these titles of Christ and Lord.

  150. And this one who comes after John, he's not even worthy to untie his shoelaces.

  151. The next scene, scene two, is verses 29 through 34.

  152. And in this scene, we see John the Baptist seeing Jesus and making an announcement.

  153. And it's queued up in verse 29, the next day.

  154. That means there's a scene change.

  155. The next day, John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him.

  156. And he says, he doesn't catcall.

  157. He's not like, doesn't do that.

  158. What he does do is he says, behold, the Lamb of God.

  159. And what follows in this section, verses 29 through 34, it's like a Messiah sandwich.

  160. We have titles on both sides and a bunch of descriptions in the middle.

  161. What we have here is John the Baptist acting like an announcer at a prize fight.

  162. You know those guys that announce the challenger and the champ?

  163. They get the mic and they're like, you know, are you ready to rumble?

  164. And then they announce the challenger.

  165. And then when they turn to the champ, they're like, and in the blue corner.

  166. And then they start naming titles.

  167. He owns this belt and he owns that belt.

  168. He's done these KOs and he has this reputation.

  169. That's what John the Baptist is doing.

  170. He's not making this announcement to Jesus.

  171. He's making this announcement to everyone around the Jordan.

  172. Look what he says.

  173. Behold, the Lamb of God.

  174. Look, the Lamb of God.

  175. Hey, everybody, look, the Lamb of God.

  176. Lambs played a central role in the Jewish sacrificial system,

  177. especially when we get to the holy days of Passover, the Passover lamb.

  178. Lambs were repeatedly offered.

  179. Their blood was shed and they died to atone for the sins of sinners.

  180. They were killed in the place of sinners.

  181. That's called a substitute.

  182. JTB is announcing, behold, God's ultimate sacrifice for your sin.

  183. That's what he's saying.

  184. Behold, God's salvation.

  185. Right there.

  186. That guy.

  187. That guy.

  188. And we read this description that follows,

  189. who takes away the sins, the sin of the world.

  190. Now, when you hear the word world,

  191. don't think the planet Earth.

  192. Be thinking more in terms of sinful humanity

  193. in organized rebellion against God.

  194. People living in darkness.

  195. You see, Christ's death satisfied once and for all

  196. God's wrath towards our sin.

  197. So there were no more sacrificial lambs needed.

  198. It's a great description.

  199. And then he goes on to another description in verse 30.

  200. We're familiar with this one already.

  201. John keeps on saying to the crowd,

  202. this is he of whom I said,

  203. after me comes a man who ranks before me

  204. because he was before me.

  205. Yes, sounds like a riddle.

  206. But what he's saying is,

  207. this guy that was born six months after me,

  208. he's actually greater than me

  209. because he's always existed before me.

  210. He is the preexistent second person of the Trinity.

  211. He's not quite saying it like that,

  212. but that's how we understand it.

  213. He's claiming that this Lamb of God

  214. is from everlasting to everlasting.

  215. He is God.

  216. And then in verses 31 through 34,

  217. we move to the focus on the baptism of Jesus.

  218. In verse 31, he says,

  219. this is the one whom I said.

  220. In verse, I myself do not know him.

  221. That might seem a little confusing.

  222. What it means is,

  223. is John the Baptist didn't fully understand

  224. who Jesus was until his baptism.

  225. Then it all becomes clear to him.

  226. And he says,

  227. for this purpose,

  228. I came baptizing with the water

  229. that he might be revealed to Israel.

  230. His baptism,

  231. and what happens at his baptism,

  232. discloses who he is.

  233. And then we have this other description

  234. in verse 32.

  235. It's an eyewitness.

  236. I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove,

  237. and it remained on him.

  238. This is the anointing of Jesus Christ

  239. for ministry.

  240. And John saw it.

  241. The baptism of Jesus is recorded

  242. in all of the Gospels.

  243. And what we see happening here

  244. is the anointing of Jesus the Christ.

  245. In the Old Testament,

  246. prophets, priests, and kings

  247. were anointed with oil

  248. for ministry to be set apart,

  249. and the Spirit would come upon them

  250. and even leave them.

  251. But here, it's not oil,

  252. but the Holy Spirit himself

  253. who comes down upon Jesus,

  254. and he remains on Jesus permanently.

  255. It's his anointing.

  256. He is the ultimate prophet, priest, and king.

  257. And then we see in verse 33

  258. that he's also an ear witness.

  259. I myself did not know him.

  260. I didn't know him fully.

  261. But he who sent me,

  262. God the Father,

  263. to baptize with water,

  264. said to me,

  265. he on whom you see the Spirit

  266. descend and remain,

  267. this is he who baptizes

  268. with the Holy Spirit.

  269. So, John, upon seeing

  270. Jesus anointed by the Holy Spirit,

  271. it's a fulfillment

  272. of what God the Father

  273. has told him,

  274. and he's like,

  275. that's him!

  276. That's the one!

  277. He's the baptizer

  278. with the Holy Spirit.

  279. That's a reference

  280. to the second,

  281. the new covenant.

  282. We read about it in Ezra,

  283. Ezekiel chapter 36,

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  284. the Holy Spirit

  285. coming upon us

  286. in a new covenant way

  287. in which we are now

  288. able to live for God.

  289. He is the baptizer

  290. with the Holy Spirit.

  291. We see it happen

  292. at Pentecost.

  293. And if you become a believer,

  294. at the moment you believe,

  295. you're baptized

  296. by the Holy Spirit.

  297. So we have all these descriptions,

  298. and then in verse 34

  299. we have the final

  300. kind of like title.

  301. And I have seen

  302. and have borne witness

  303. that this is the Son of God.

  304. So we start with the Lamb of God,

  305. we end with the Son of God,

  306. and we have these descriptions

  307. in between

  308. that are just lovely.

  309. That he come to take away

  310. the sins of the world,

  311. that he was before me,

  312. that from everlasting

  313. to everlasting,

  314. he is God,

  315. that he has been anointed

  316. by the Spirit,

  317. that he is the baptizer

  318. with the Spirit.

  319. This is all about Jesus.

  320. What are you looking for?

  321. Scene 2,

  322. John the Evangelist,

  323. helps us to see

  324. Jesus,

  325. behold the Lamb of God.

  326. Scene 3.

  327. Look at verse 35.

  328. We have a new scene.

  329. Again,

  330. the next day.

  331. Scene change,

  332. and then we have

  333. more characters involved.

  334. This time we see

  335. John the Baptist,

  336. once again,

  337. he's standing,

  338. but this time he's standing

  339. with two of his disciples,

  340. and we know one of their names

  341. is Andrew.

  342. We don't know

  343. the other disciple's name.

  344. Some scholars believe

  345. it's John the Evangelist,

  346. just not referring to himself.

  347. So these are standing together,

  348. and look,

  349. verse 36,

  350. John the Baptist

  351. looks at Jesus

  352. as he walked by,

  353. and again,

  354. he says,

  355. behold the Lamb of God.

  356. Look,

  357. there he is,

  358. the Lamb of God,

  359. God's salvation,

  360. God's ultimate sacrifice

  361. to take away our sins.

  362. What's different is that

  363. he's got two of his disciples

  364. standing with him.

  365. Yes,

  366. John the Baptist

  367. had his own disciples,

  368. and then they follow Jesus,

  369. and John the Baptist

  370. has no problem with that.

  371. He's like,

  372. you go and follow him.

  373. It's like,

  374. I am the guy

  375. that is the forerunner

  376. to that guy.

  377. You go follow him.

  378. And in verse 38,

  379. we have the first recorded words

  380. of Jesus in John's gospel.

  381. It's a question.

  382. It's a question for those two disciples.

  383. Jesus senses them following him.

  384. He turns around,

  385. and he asks them a question.

  386. And I want to help you realize

  387. he's asking you

  388. the very same question this morning.

  389. Amen.

  390. What are you seeking?

  391. What are you looking for?

  392. What are you looking for?

  393. Where are you looking for life?

  394. What are you looking to

  395. to scratch the itch,

  396. to fill the hole,

  397. to make sense of things,

  398. to have purpose and meaning,

  399. to be happy?

  400. Where are you looking for that?

  401. Now,

  402. Jesus is about

  403. to show them where to look.

  404. So,

  405. verse 38,

  406. Jesus asks them

  407. and asks us,

  408. what are you looking for?

  409. And then they answer

  410. with another title,

  411. rabbi,

  412. which means teacher.

  413. In the original language,

  414. what happens in this passage

  415. is that you have

  416. a Hebrew word like rabbi,

  417. and that what John would do,

  418. he would translate it

  419. into Greek

  420. for his Greek-speaking audience.

  421. So,

  422. he actually translates

  423. rabbi

  424. into a Greek word

  425. for teacher

  426. that's translated here

  427. in English

  428. as teacher.

  429. But what he's doing is

  430. he's helping his people

  431. understand what they're saying,

  432. what's being said.

  433. And they ask,

  434. where are you saying?

  435. Now,

  436. you can't miss

  437. what they're actually asking.

  438. They're not just simply

  439. asking for his address

  440. so that they can put it

  441. in their phones.

  442. They're asking

  443. for where he's staying

  444. so that they could be with him,

  445. so that they can learn from him,

  446. so that they can see him

  447. in real time,

  448. how he interacts with them.

  449. They're like,

  450. can we come and be with you?

  451. And how Jesus responds

  452. is so encouraging.

  453. He says to them,

  454. this is the second recorded thing

  455. he says

  456. in the Gospel of John,

  457. come and you will see.

  458. Come.

  459. Find out.

  460. Come and see.

  461. Come with me.

  462. And they spend

  463. the rest of the day with him

  464. and you can see that

  465. at the end of verse 39.

  466. They come

  467. and they spend time

  468. with Jesus

  469. with where he was staying.

  470. Can you just imagine that?

  471. Jesus coming to Kenosha.

  472. You come across him

  473. and like,

  474. Jesus, where are you staying?

  475. And he's like,

  476. I'm staying.

  477. And you know what?

  478. They have Hampton Inn.

  479. And you're like,

  480. well, what room?

  481. He's like,

  482. room 302.

  483. Can I,

  484. come hang out with me.

  485. That would be amazing.

  486. Come and you will see.

  487. This is getting at the nature

  488. of discipleship,

  489. which we'll talk about more

  490. in just a second.

  491. But they are being invited

  492. to come into his presence.

  493. And so they did.

  494. They spend the day with him.

  495. They behold his glory.

  496. Glory is of the only begotten,

  497. one and only of the Father.

  498. And then in verse 40 and 41,

  499. something interesting happens.

  500. Something very interesting happens.

  501. We read this.

  502. one of the two who heard John speak

  503. and follow Jesus was Andrew,

  504. Simon Peter's brother.

  505. He first found his own brother Simon

  506. and said to him,

  507. we have found the Messiah.

  508. What's interesting is

  509. after spending the day with Jesus,

  510. Andrew makes a beeline

  511. to his brother Simon.

  512. And he's like,

  513. you've got to come

  514. meet this guy.

  515. So you see,

  516. when you come into

  517. the presence of Jesus,

  518. when you spend a day

  519. with him in his place,

  520. when you interact with him,

  521. and you get to know him,

  522. it's the most purest form

  523. of evangelism.

  524. It's when you go to someone,

  525. oftentimes the closest people

  526. you know and love,

  527. and you're like,

  528. you've got to meet him.

  529. It's evangelism in its purest form.

  530. Spending time in the presence

  531. of the Word incarnate,

  532. it makes you contagious.

  533. You go viral.

  534. You want others to experience

  535. his steadfast love

  536. and faithfulness.

  537. You want others to see,

  538. to behold his glory,

  539. to stand amazed.

  540. How marvelous,

  541. how wonderful

  542. is this Nazarene?

  543. 41.

  544. Andrew finds Peter.

  545. He brings him

  546. and he says,

  547. we have found the Messiah.

  548. This is that title again.

  549. The Christ.

  550. John translates it

  551. for his audience.

  552. It means anointed one.

  553. The long-looked-for king

  554. in the line of David

  555. who would establish

  556. a new forever kingdom.

  557. It's him.

  558. We found him.

  559. I don't think he was yawning

  560. when he told Peter this.

  561. And in verse 42,

  562. Andrew brings Simon to Jesus.

  563. It's that Simon,

  564. we all know,

  565. who would get over

  566. his ski tips a lot.

  567. He would shoot first

  568. with his mouth

  569. and then aim second.

  570. We love him for it.

  571. And in verse 42,

  572. before Simon can say anything,

  573. before he can say anything,

  574. Jesus says to him,

  575. you are Simon,

  576. the son of John,

  577. you shall be called Cephas,

  578. which means Peter.

  579. Again, he's doing this translating.

  580. Cephas in Aramaic

  581. means rock.

  582. And in Greek,

  583. rock is translated Petros,

  584. or Peter.

  585. And what Jesus is doing here

  586. and what we're seeing,

  587. it's a description of sorts.

  588. He knows Peter.

  589. He knows Simon.

  590. He knows what's going to become of him.

  591. It's just a little taste,

  592. a little insight

  593. into what Jesus knows.

  594. We're going to see more of this

  595. in just a second.

  596. But in this scene,

  597. we have a number of titles.

  598. Lamb of God,

  599. Rabbi,

  600. Messiah Christ.

  601. We see this description,

  602. this invitation to come and see.

  603. We see this kind of knowledge

  604. unlike anybody else.

  605. He already knows Simon

  606. and gives him a name.

  607. And we have this really interesting

  608. kind of like pure evangelism

  609. of Andrew going to find his brother

  610. because they have found him.

  611. And so now we move on to scene four,

  612. verses 43 through 51,

  613. and we have another day,

  614. a new scene.

  615. Verse 43,

  616. the next day.

  617. And we have new characters.

  618. So in verse 43,

  619. we see that Jesus decides

  620. to go to Galilee.

  621. They were with John the Baptist

  622. in the area around the Jordan,

  623. and now they make a beeline

  624. to Galilee.

  625. And what comes next

  626. is remarkable.

  627. In verse 43,

  628. there's just three words.

  629. He found Philip

  630. and said to him,

  631. follow me.

  632. Now it would be possible

  633. to think that

  634. this is just a chance encounter.

  635. That Jesus was just walking

  636. through the streets of Galilee

  637. and he kind of bumps into Philip

  638. and he's like,

  639. oh, hey, follow me.

  640. That's not what it says.

  641. He found Philip.

  642. He went to Galilee

  643. looking for Philip

  644. among other people.

  645. This is not a chance encounter.

  646. Let me just ask you this.

  647. How would it make you feel

  648. if Jesus came into Kenosha today

  649. and he came looking for you?

  650. He's here to see you.

  651. He's here to have

  652. a conversation with you.

  653. He finds Philip and says,

  654. follow me.

  655. This is another kind of invitation.

  656. It's an invitation

  657. to become a disciple of Jesus.

  658. And first century discipleship

  659. is a little different

  660. than what we think about it today.

  661. It's a huge commitment.

  662. It involves accompanying

  663. a rabbi or a master

  664. in order to listen to them

  665. and to watch them

  666. and to interact with them.

  667. It was a whole life commitment.

  668. So you are spending time

  669. traveling with this,

  670. your rabbi,

  671. in order to watch

  672. how he lived

  673. and how he lived out

  674. his teaching in real time

  675. so that you yourself

  676. could then imitate him.

  677. to live out his teaching

  678. in real time.

  679. Discipleship to Jesus

  680. is like what apprenticeship

  681. is to us today.

  682. You know what apprenticeship is

  683. where there's this master

  684. and in order to learn a trade

  685. you become his or her apprentice

  686. and so you follow them

  687. and you're watching them work

  688. and you're asking them questions

  689. and he or she gives you work to do

  690. and then they evaluate you

  691. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  692. But what it means

  693. to become an apprentice of Jesus,

  694. a disciple of Jesus

  695. goes beyond learning a trade.

  696. It pertains to all of life.

  697. Every aspect of your life.

  698. It means living with Jesus

  699. as the controlling center

  700. of your life.

  701. It means living with Jesus

  702. as the operational center

  703. of your life.

  704. It means living with Jesus

  705. as the master of your life.

  706. And Philip must have said yes

  707. because after Jesus finds Philip,

  708. Philip finds Nathanael.

  709. And we see this in verse 45.

  710. Nathanael was most likely

  711. also went by another name,

  712. Bartholomew.

  713. And when he finds him,

  714. verse 45,

  715. look what Philip has to say.

  716. We have found him

  717. of whom Moses in the law

  718. and also the prophets wrote,

  719. Jesus of Nazareth,

  720. the son of Joseph.

  721. We have found him

  722. whom Moses in the law

  723. and also the prophets wrote,

  724. Jesus of Nazareth,

  725. the son of Joseph,

  726. the Messiah.

  727. The king's come.

  728. We found him.

  729. All that we read in Moses

  730. about the prophet who's coming,

  731. about whom all the sacrificial system

  732. points to,

  733. and all the prophets

  734. who they're speaking about.

  735. Think of Isaiah 7,

  736. Isaiah 9,

  737. Isaiah 53.

  738. It's him.

  739. We found him.

  740. Again,

  741. I don't think he's yawning.

  742. I don't think he's like,

  743. oh,

  744. I almost forgot Nathanael.

  745. We found him.

  746. I think he made a beeline

  747. to Nathanael

  748. because he found him.

  749. Nathanael's not so enthusiastic.

  750. Look at verse 46.

  751. Can anything come out of Nazareth?

  752. It's like Philip was like,

  753. we found him!

  754. It's Jesus of Nazareth!

  755. Nathanael's like,

  756. yeah, right.

  757. Whatever.

  758. Can anything good

  759. come out of Nazareth?

  760. Nazareth was known

  761. kind of as a backwater town.

  762. But something good

  763. was in Nazareth,

  764. came from Nazareth.

  765. God's goodness incarnate.

  766. And so what we see is

  767. Philip essentially repeat

  768. what Jesus said to Andrew.

  769. Nathanael,

  770. come and see.

  771. You gotta meet him.

  772. Again,

  773. it's this evangelism

  774. in purest form.

  775. It's this,

  776. I've been in his presence

  777. and you've got to meet him.

  778. Amen.

  779. And so Nathanael goes

  780. with Philip.

  781. Philip knowing that

  782. Nathanael just meets him.

  783. Then his opinion's gonna change.

  784. In verse 47 through 51

  785. we see the interaction.

  786. Nathanael doesn't get to speak once.

  787. Not at first at least.

  788. Jesus saw Nathanael

  789. coming toward him

  790. and Jesus says to Nathanael,

  791. behold an Israelite indeed

  792. in whom there is no deceit.

  793. It's like he's like,

  794. there he is.

  795. The real deal right there, baby.

  796. No nonsense.

  797. Shooter,

  798. straight shooter.

  799. You got it.

  800. Jesus must have said something

  801. to Nathanael here

  802. that had affected Nathanael

  803. in a way

  804. that it registered.

  805. So Nathanael responds to that

  806. in verse 48.

  807. He says,

  808. how do you know me?

  809. It'd be more like

  810. someone coming up to you

  811. in Target

  812. and they start talking to you

  813. like they know you

  814. and you're like,

  815. have we met?

  816. How do you know me?

  817. You see,

  818. Jesus knows Nathanael

  819. and he knows how he's wired.

  820. And so what Jesus says to him

  821. pings him at his heart.

  822. He's known.

  823. Don't you want to be known?

  824. Have we met?

  825. How do you know me?

  826. Verse 48,

  827. Jesus answered,

  828. before Philip called you,

  829. when you were under the fig tree,

  830. I saw you.

  831. When you were under the fig tree,

  832. I saw you.

  833. He wasn't there physically,

  834. but he saw him under the fig tree.

  835. I saw you.

  836. I know you.

  837. I see you.

  838. could it be,

  839. dear friend,

  840. that you're seeing,

  841. that he sees you,

  842. that not only would he come to Kenosha

  843. to get you,

  844. but he sees you

  845. and knows you

  846. and he knows everything about you.

  847. He sees you sitting under your fig tree.

  848. And immediately,

  849. there's this confession from Nathanael.

  850. Rabbi,

  851. we know that title.

  852. You are the son of God.

  853. We've seen that title.

  854. You are the king of Israel.

  855. You are the king,

  856. the Messiah.

  857. You are the one

  858. who has come

  859. to sit upon David's throne.

  860. He's convinced.

  861. And Jesus is like,

  862. I saw you under the fig tree.

  863. I told you that

  864. and you believe.

  865. That's it.

  866. You just had this little

  867. kind of piece of glory

  868. you saw in me

  869. and you believe.

  870. And then he says to him,

  871. you will see greater things

  872. than these.

  873. There's more glory to behold.

  874. There's more wonders waiting.

  875. What we see here

  876. is that Jesus has this divine knowledge.

  877. That he sees into us.

  878. He knows us.

  879. And he loves us.

  880. In verses 15 and 51,

  881. I see you under the fig tree.

  882. You see greater things.

  883. And Jesus says to him,

  884. truly, truly,

  885. in verse 51,

  886. I say to you,

  887. you will see heaven opened

  888. and the angels of God

  889. ascending and descending

  890. on the Son of Man.

  891. It's a reference

  892. to Jacob's ladder

  893. in Genesis chapter 28.

    Genesis 28 chapter mention

  894. It's Jacob's dream

  895. where God reveals

  896. to Jacob his name.

  897. And not only does he reveal

  898. his name to Jacob,

  899. he reminds Jacob

  900. that through Jacob's offspring,

  901. he will bless

  902. all the families

  903. of the earth.

  904. And so what Jesus

  905. is doing here

  906. is he's saying,

  907. I'm greater than Jacob.

  908. You will see it.

  909. You will see who I am.

  910. And not only will you

  911. see who I am,

  912. you will know

  913. the name of God.

  914. But in me,

  915. all the nations

  916. of the earth,

  917. all the families

  918. of the earth

  919. will be blessed.

  920. And then he caps it

  921. with his favorite title

  922. for himself.

  923. the Son of Man.

  924. This is the only title

  925. Jesus refers to himself

  926. in this passage.

  927. Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7:13–14

  928. verse 13 through 14.

  929. One like a Son of Man

  930. will come to the

  931. Ancient of Days,

  932. the Father.

  933. And the Father,

  934. the Ancient of Days,

  935. will give the Son of Man

  936. a dominion

  937. that will last forever

  938. over all peoples.

  939. There's no question

  940. who that is.

  941. It's the Messiah.

  942. Titles,

  943. Rabbi,

  944. Son of God,

  945. King of Israel,

  946. Son of Man.

  947. Descriptions.

  948. One who Moses

  949. and the prophets wrote.

  950. This description of saying,

  951. I saw you.

  952. Come and see.

  953. Come and see greater things.

  954. What are you looking for?

  955. Who are you looking to

  956. to scratch your itch?

  957. Who are you looking,

  958. what are you looking to

  959. for life?

  960. Are you trying to make trips

  961. to Sin City,

  962. hoping not to get caught

  963. because you think

  964. life is there?

  965. No.

  966. Here's the point

  967. of all these scenes.

  968. John the evangelist

  969. is asking

  970. and answering

  971. the question,

  972. what are you looking for?

  973. And this morning,

  974. we see the answer

  975. in all of these titles

  976. and all of these descriptions.

  977. The one that you're looking for,

  978. the whole Bible,

  979. is saying

  980. the one that you are looking for

  981. is this Jesus of Nazareth.

  982. He's the Christ,

  983. Messiah,

  984. Son of God.

  985. He is the Lord,

  986. King of Israel.

  987. He is the Rabbi.

  988. He is the Lamb of God.

  989. He is the Son of Man.

  990. He is the King of Israel,

  991. the King of Kings

  992. of all.

  993. That's who He is.

  994. He takes away

  995. the sins of the world.

  996. He was before me

  997. because He's preexistent,

  998. everlasting to everlasting,

  999. anointed by the Spirit.

1000. He baptized with the Spirit.

  1001. He's the inviter.

  1002. Come and see.

  1003. Follow me.

  1004. One who Moses

  1005. and the prophets spoke,

  1006. He's greater than Jacob

1007. and He is the one.

  1008. He is the point.

  1009. We are all looking

  1010. for something, right?

  1011. And the Bible says

  1012. the something

1013. that you are looking for

  1014. is a someone.

  1015. Jesus of Nazareth.

  1016. Let me apply this

  1017. in three ways.

  1018. He sees you.

  1019. He knows you

  1020. and He loves you.

  1021. That little,

  1022. those little words

  1023. that He says

  1024. to Nathaniel,

  1025. when you're under

  1026. the fig tree,

  1027. I saw you.

  1028. In your craziness,

  1029. He sees you.

  1030. When you're sleeping,

  1031. He sees you.

  1032. At your worst,

  1033. He sees you.

  1034. At your best,

  1035. He sees you.

  1036. He knows you.

  1037. He loves you.

  1038. Do you believe that?

  1039. Receive it.

1040. And not only does He see you,

  1041. He's inviting you.

  1042. Come and see.

  1043. Come and see me.

  1044. Three times,

  1045. there's an invitation.

  1046. First with Jesus,

1047. come and you will see.

  1048. And then it is,

1049. I think it is Philip,

  1050. come and see.

  1051. And then Jesus

  1052. to Nathaniel,

  1053. He says,

1054. you will see greater things.

1055. Come and see greater things.

1056. Come back Sunday after Sunday.

  1057. Come,

  1058. come on Sundays.

  1059. Make it a point

  1060. to be here at 10 a.m.

1061. so that you can behold

1062. the glory of the sun

  1063. again and again.

  1064. Let the sun,

  1065. sunshine,

  1066. shine

  1067. into your darkness.

  1068. Behold His glory.

1069. And then you're going to

  1070. start doing the math.

1071. He's greater than any companion.

1072. He's greater than any reputation.

1073. He's greater than Sin City.

1074. He's greater than any piece

  1075. of finances,

  1076. of health.

  1077. He's greater.

  1078. He's better.

  1079. He's bigger.

  1080. He's awesome.

  1081. Come and see.

  1082. Follow Him.

  1083. I guess there's four applications.

1084. Not just come and see.

1085. Come and be His apprentice.

  1086. Come for His all-life

  1087. apprenticeship.

1088. Come to where He's staying

  1089. and say,

  1090. show me.

  1091. Teach me.

1092. I want to see you.

1093. I want to live like that.

  1094. I want to together

  1095. follow you

  1096. with brothers and sisters

  1097. doing the same.

1098. I want to make you

  1099. the controlling center

  1100. of my life,

1101. the master of my life.

1102. Let's do that together, gang.

  1103. He's so worth it.

  1104. He's so greater than.

  1105. Amen.

  1106. And then the thing,

1107. if you didn't catch it

  1108. in this passage,

  1109. that's an application

  1110. is what we see

  1111. John the Baptist do

  1112. with his two disciples.

  1113. It's what Andrew does

  1114. with Peter.

  1115. It's what Philip does

  1116. with Nathaniel.

  1117. He finds a way

1118. after being in the presence

  1119. of Jesus,

  1120. they find ways

1121. to bring others to Him.

  1122. To invite them.

  1123. If you have friends

1124. and family in the area,

  1125. invite them to come

  1126. on Sunday morning.

  1127. And don't come saying,

  1128. oh, the preacher's awesome

  1129. because he's not.

  1130. Jesus is awesome.

1131. Say, you've got to hear

1132. what this guy is saying

  1133. about Jesus

1134. from the Gospel of John.

  1135. Come with me.

  1136. Come with me.

  1137. Meet Him.

  1138. Meet Jesus.

  1139. Behold His glory.

  1140. Four scenes.

  1141. All answering the question,

1142. what are you looking for?

  1143. You know, I realized

  1144. 20 years after

  1145. listening to U2s.

  1146. I still haven't found

  1147. what I'm looking for,

  1148. how tragic it is.

1149. Listen to the final stanza.

1150. I believe in the kingdom come,

  1151. and all the colors

  1152. will bleed into one,

  1153. bleed into one.

1154. But yes, I'm still running.

  1155. You broke the bonds.

  1156. You loosed the chains.

  1157. Chains carried the cross.

  1158. Who's he talking about?

  1159. Of my shame.

  1160. Oh, my shame.

1161. You know I believe it.

  1162. But I still haven't found

  1163. what I'm looking for.

  1164. That's the tragedy

  1165. of that song.

1166. And you know what's tragic

  1167. is when Christians,

1168. they come and sing on Sundays

1169. of how wonderful Jesus is in,

1170. and then Monday through Saturday,

1171. they are looking for life

  1172. in anything but Jesus.

  1173. It's tragic.

  1174. He's what we're looking for.

  1175. He is the Lord,

  1176. everlasting to everlasting,

  1177. the Lamb of God,

  1178. anointed of the Spirit,

  1179. baptizer with the Spirit,

  1180. the Son of God,

  1181. our Rabbi,

  1182. our Master,

  1183. our Christ,

  1184. our Messiah,

  1185. one of whom Moses

  1186. and the prophets spoke.

1187. He's not just the King of Israel.

  1188. He's King of everything.

  1189. Jesus of Nazareth,

  1190. the Son of Man.

  1191. He sees you.

1192. Will you come follow Him?

  1193. Let's pray together.

  1194. God,

  1195. we are so grateful

  1196. for our Bibles,

  1197. and Lord Jesus,

  1198. we are so grateful

  1199. that You want us

  1200. to know You.

  1201. So we come

  1202. as Your people,

  1203. and we ask,

  1204. show us Your glory.

  1205. Show us Your glory,

  1206. Lord Jesus.

  1207. Father,

1208. would You pour out Your Spirit,

1209. because we tend to be thick

  1210. and dense.

  1211. We forget so much,

1212. and we run after things

  1213. that don't,

  1214. aren't worth it,

  1215. but God,

  1216. would You just

  1217. fill us afresh

  1218. with Your Spirit.

1219. Incline our hearts to You.

1220. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.
