  1. To make it real easy, the text for this morning is on the back of your bulletin.

  2. So if you can read that fairly small print or turn in your Bibles, you can take a look at

  3. that. We're going to be looking at what happened in John chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  4. All right, here's the text.

  5. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

  6. And the mother of Jesus was there.

  7. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  8. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, they have no wine.

  9. And Jesus said to her, woman, what does that have to do with me?

  10. My hour has not yet come.

  11. His mother said to the servants, do whatever he tells you.

  12. Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification,

  13. each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

  14. Jesus said to the servants, fill the jars with water.

  15. And they filled them up to the brim.

  16. And he said to them, now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.

  17. So they took it.

  18. When the master of the feast tasted the water, now become wine,

  19. and did not know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew,

  20. the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him,

  21. everyone serves the good wine first.

  22. And when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine.

  23. But you have kept the good wine until now.

  24. This is the first of his signs.

  25. Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and manifested his glory.

  26. And his disciples believed in him.

  27. After this, he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples,

  28. and they stayed there for a few days.

  29. Let's pray.

  30. Heavenly Father, thank you for this text.

  31. Thank you for the opportunity to look at it together.

  32. May we see the glory of Jesus in this text.

  33. And then may we also see what your glory, being beheld by us, does to us.

  34. We pray in your name.

  35. Amen.

  36. Well, of all of the miracles in the gospel accounts,

  37. this may be the most difficult to understand.

  38. Not because it's hard to understand what Jesus did,

  39. but why he did it at all.

  40. I mean, of all the things Jesus could have done,

  41. why did he choose to do the first miracle at a small-town wedding?

  42. And why did it have to involve wine?

  43. And not just a little.

  44. Further, the wedding was a human celebration

  45. with little or no obvious spiritual connotation or application.

  46. Many preachers of the Bible and Bible teachers

  47. go to an effort to try to make this text

  48. into some kind of allegorical story

  49. about our joy in Christ, which gets better through time.

  50. But I'm not convinced that was the purpose of the text.

  51. It's important to know what John is doing

  52. and why he includes this as he does.

  53. He began with a thesis statement.

  54. You've heard Pastor Mike say this a number of times

  55. from John 1, verses 1 to 18,

    John 1:1–18

  56. declaring that Jesus is God in human flesh.

  57. And then the last, toward the end of John's gospel,

  58. really the theme of the gospel,

  59. really the purpose for which he wrote the gospel,

  60. in chapter 20, verse 30 and 31, say this.

  61. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples,

  62. which are not written in this book,

  63. but these are written so that you may believe

  64. that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  65. and that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  66. That's why he wrote the book.

  67. And that's why he included a number of signs in the book

  68. to bring us to that conclusion.

  69. So this first miraculous sign must have been designated

  70. to make us know who Jesus is

  71. by seeing something of his glory

  72. and to respond to his salvation by faith.

  73. So does this account do that?

  74. That's the question.

  75. This account is about a real wedding

  76. in a real place with real people.

  77. John specifically picked this miraculous sign

  78. over many others.

  79. Jesus did many, many miracles.

  80. If you read the other gospels,

  81. you'll see many, many more.

  82. Why did John pick this one and the ones he picked?

  83. Well, this would build the framework

  84. of John's conclusion concerning Jesus

  85. as the Messiah and the Savior.

  86. But a bit of background before we continue.

  87. The seven signs that John recorded,

  88. which were done in the presence of his disciples,

  89. were actually all leading up to showing us

  90. something about who Jesus is,

  91. that he is the Christ,

  92. and that by believing in him,

  93. we might have life through his name.

  94. So with some help from a commentator

  95. by the name of Merrill Tenney,

  96. in an old commentary back many, many years ago,

  97. he was writing and he was saying

  98. that this first sign

  99. actually demonstrated Jesus

  100. as the master of quality,

  101. accomplishing instantaneously

  102. what would have taken months

  103. to be accomplished.

  104. And it showed Jesus as the Lord of glory.

  105. The second sign in John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  106. healing of the noble man's son,

  107. that's an interesting one

  108. because Jesus healed him,

  109. but he was 20 miles away from him

  110. when it happened.

  111. Well, that demonstrated that Jesus

  112. is the master of space and distance.

  113. And Jesus healed him with his word.

  114. And so the first miracle told us something

  115. about the glory of God.

  116. The second miracle told us something

  117. about the true and living word of God.

  118. The third sign in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  119. the healing of the impotent man

  120. who had been waiting for 38 years

  121. to be put into the water,

  122. into the fountain there,

  123. into the pool,

  124. demonstrated Jesus as the master of time.

  125. And it showed us that he was Lord

  126. over the Sabbath.

  127. The fourth sign was the feeding of the 5,000.

  128. Showed us mastery,

  129. the master of quantity.

  130. Remember, Jesus took one little boy's snack

  131. and turned it into enough

  132. to feed 5,000 men plus women and children.

  133. What did it tell us about that?

  134. Well, Jesus actually preached a message

  135. in the context of that miracle.

  136. He's the bread of life.

  137. The fifth sign, walking on water,

  138. said something about Jesus being

  139. the master of natural forces.

  140. Remember, Jesus was in the boat.

  141. He was asleep.

  142. Storm, don't you care that we perish?

  143. Says his disciples.

  144. He speaks.

  145. The waters go flat.

  146. Peace.

  147. Jesus is the God of peace.

  148. The sixth sign,

  149. the healing of a man born blind,

  150. answered the question

  151. why this man was afflicted.

  152. Did he sin or was it because of his parents?

  153. Well, this demonstrated Jesus

  154. as the master of misfortune.

  155. But showed us that Jesus

  156. is the light of the world.

  157. The seventh sign,

  158. the raising of Lazarus from the dead,

  159. demonstrated that Jesus

  160. is master of death or over death.

  161. He is the resurrection and the life.

  162. So these seven signs together

  163. were chosen that we might believe

  164. that Jesus is the Christ,

  165. the Son of God,

  166. and that by believing

  167. we may have life in his name.

  168. So let's find out

  169. what there is about this first sign

  170. that will lead us to that conclusion.

  171. Unlike some miracles,

  172. such as the feeding of the 5,000,

  173. this one has no supporting dialogue

  174. or discourse

  175. to help us zero in

  176. on the meaning of the miracle.

  177. Does this miracle declare Jesus

  178. to be the Lord of glory,

  179. drawing us to believe

  180. that he is the Christ?

  181. Is that what this does?

  182. I suggest that this miracle

  183. establishes the base,

  184. the groundwork,

  185. on which we are going to build

  186. the case of who Jesus is,

  187. that of his glory.

  188. This case is built

  189. on a human connection,

  190. it's built on the miracle itself,

  191. and then the revelation

  192. of the Lord following the miracle.

  193. So that's where we're headed.

  194. Alright, let's start

  195. with the human connection.

  196. So here we are at a wedding,

  197. Jesus and a wedding.

  198. This first sign

  199. that Jesus performs

  200. is not in a synagogue,

  201. it's not in the temple,

  202. it's not at a funeral

  203. raising the dead,

  204. it's not in an infirmary

  205. healing the sick,

  206. it's at a wedding

  207. in a small town

  208. not far from the town

  209. where Jesus grew up.

  210. It was in a place

  211. where everyone knew

  212. everyone else.

  213. It involved refreshment

  214. and the sparing

  215. of family embarrassment.

  216. We'll get to that in a bit.

  217. Perhaps our first reaction

  218. is to assign

  219. some more spiritual application,

  220. but maybe we ought to resist

  221. that temptation

  222. and read more

  223. into this text,

  224. not to read more

  225. into this text than it's there,

  226. but to read the text

  227. and actually see

  228. what is there,

  229. what is in front of us.

  230. So this was a real wedding

  231. and Jesus,

  232. his mother,

  233. his disciples,

  234. and himself

  235. all were there

  236. to attend

  237. and then to do

  238. such a miraculous sign

  239. actually removes

  240. a picture of Jesus

  241. that some might

  242. think

  243. like some kind of

  244. a cloistered rabbi

  245. or something,

  246. but it wasn't Jesus.

  247. In fact,

  248. it may have added

  249. to the rumored

  250. reputation

  251. of Jesus

  252. being a white bibber

  253. and a glutton,

  254. said some of his enemies.

  255. Anyway,

  256. Jesus' attendance

  257. affirms his approval

  258. of the institution

  259. of marriage.

  260. Well,

  261. that's a needed issue

  262. throughout times,

  263. even today.

  264. It reminds us

  265. that Jesus was

  266. fully human

  267. in every way,

  268. even attending

  269. parties

  270. and family celebrations.

  271. I should make

  272. some observations

  273. about first century

  274. Middle Eastern weddings.

  275. It was a celebration.

  276. Now,

  277. we have weddings today.

  278. We go to weddings

  279. and after the ceremony,

  280. after the exchange

  281. of vows

  282. and so forth,

  283. then usually

  284. there is some kind

  285. of a party.

  286. There is a reception.

  287. There is a time

  288. where there is laughter

  289. and joy

  290. and sometimes dancing

  291. and there's

  292. all kinds of things

  293. happening.

  294. Food,

  295. refreshment,

  296. all kinds of things.

  297. And how long

  298. does that last?

  299. A few hours maybe

  300. and then we go home.

  301. Middle Eastern weddings

  302. were not quite that way.

  303. They could last

  304. even up to

  305. a week.

  306. Can you imagine that?

  307. And then

  308. also at these weddings,

  309. wine was considered

  310. to be a necessity

  311. on those occasions.

  312. To run out of wine

  313. was a serious issue.

  314. It was a social

  315. embarrassment.

  316. And this is interesting.

  317. It can also become

  318. a legal matter

  319. because if

  320. the wine ran out,

  321. relatives of the bride

  322. might, in fact,

  323. sue

  324. their daughter's

  325. their daughter's

  326. husband's family

  327. for running out

  328. of wine.

  329. See, the groom

  330. bore the financial

  331. responsibility

  332. for the wedding.

  333. Now, if you have

  334. daughters,

  335. you would probably

  336. love to have that

  337. one reinstated.

  338. But anyway,

  339. the groom was

  340. responsible for the

  341. payment of this

  342. grand party.

  343. whatever else we

  344. can say about this,

  345. Jesus was

  346. absolutely

  347. in normal

  348. human life.

  349. Now, let's talk

  350. a little bit about

  351. Jesus and Mary.

  352. Recorded here

  353. is a conversation

  354. and then some action.

  355. So, what do we

  356. make of this?

  357. Jesus asked,

  358. or Mary asked

  359. and Jesus kindly,

  360. though nevertheless

  361. pointedly,

  362. rebukes her,

  363. reminding her

  364. that something

  365. had changed.

  366. In verse 4,

  367. when he says

  368. woman,

  369. that's not

  370. necessarily

  371. an endearing term,

  372. though neither

  373. is it necessarily

  374. a derogatory term.

  375. Like, woman?

  376. I doubt that he

  377. said that,

  378. that way.

  379. But Jesus

  380. uses the term

  381. in another place

  382. in the Bible.

  383. You remember when

  384. Jesus was hanging

  385. on the cross?

  386. And as he's

  387. hanging there,

  388. he

  389. talks to

  390. John,

  391. his disciple,

  392. and he also

  393. speaks to Mary.

  394. And he says,

  395. woman,

  396. behold your son.

  397. He wasn't talking

  398. about himself.

  399. He was talking

  400. about John.

  401. He was leaving

  402. the care of his

  403. earthly mother

  404. in the hands

  405. of his disciple.

  406. So, it wasn't

  407. derogatory necessarily,

  408. but at any rate,

  409. it might seem

  410. a bit odd

  411. for Jesus

  412. to say that,

  413. say this

  414. to his earthly

  415. mother.

  416. By the way,

  417. the apostle John

  418. does not name

  419. Mary in his

  420. gospel.

  421. He also

  422. does not name

  423. himself in his

  424. gospel.

  425. Perhaps that was

  426. done so as not

  427. to, for Mary,

  428. so as not to

  429. confuse her,

  430. the mother of

  431. Jesus,

  432. with several other

  433. people named Mary.

  434. If you ever

  435. spend any time

  436. reading the New

  437. Testament,

  438. you probably

  439. come to the

  440. conclusion that

  441. every other woman

  442. in the New

  443. Testament's name

  444. was Mary,

  445. but there's a

  446. lot of them,

  447. but so he

  448. doesn't mention

  449. her name,

  450. but anyway,

  451. what we have

  452. here,

  453. and this is

  454. important,

  455. it's a reminder

  456. by Jesus

  457. that his

  458. ministry shall

  459. ever be free

  460. of any kind

  461. of human

  462. advice,

  463. agenda,

  464. or manipulation.

  465. His purpose,

  466. and he made

  467. clear many times

  468. his purpose

  469. was to do

  470. his Father's

  471. will,

  472. the Heavenly

  473. Father.

  474. That's an

  475. important point.

  476. Though Mary

  477. had precious

  478. responsibility

  479. during Jesus'

  480. earthly life,

  481. she could no

  482. longer view him

  483. in the same way

  484. that she may

  485. have earlier.

  486. There were no

  487. prerogatives of

  488. motherhood in

  489. relation to

  490. Jesus.

  491. In fact,

  492. everywhere she

  493. appears,

  494. Jesus puts

  495. distance between

  496. himself and

  497. his earthly

  498. family.

  499. See,

  500. Mary,

  501. like every

  502. other person,

  503. would have to

  504. come to him

  505. as a sinner.

  506. She would have

  507. to recognize

  508. him as the

  509. Messiah,

  510. the Lamb of

  511. God who takes

  512. away the sin

  513. of the world.

  514. Neither she

  515. nor anyone

  516. else could

  517. claim any

  518. kind of inside

  519. track to

  520. Jesus.

  521. When Mary

  522. approached Jesus

  523. as his mother,

  524. she was

  525. reproached.

  526. After a mild

  527. rebuke,

  528. she shook

  529. it off and

  530. told the

  531. servants to

  532. do whatever

  533. he said.

  534. In other

  535. words,

  536. when she

  537. responded to

  538. Jesus as a

  539. believer,

  540. her faith

  541. was honored.

  542. And then

  543. Jesus said,

  544. my hour has

  545. not yet

  546. come.

  547. That referred

  548. to Jesus'

  549. death on the

  550. cross and

  551. his exaltation

  552. bound up with

  553. that.

  554. In fact,

  555. there are a

  556. number of

  557. places where

  558. he mentions

  559. that term.

  560. If you move

  561. forward in the

  562. gospel,

  563. in chapter 7,

  564. the scripture

  565. says,

  566. they were

  567. seeking to

  568. arrest him,

  569. but no one

  570. laid a hand

  571. on him

  572. because his

  573. hour had

  574. not yet

  575. come.

  576. Chapter 8,

  577. verse 20,

  578. in John's

  579. gospel.

  580. These words

  581. he spoke in

  582. the treasury

  583. as he taught

  584. in the temple,

  585. but no one

  586. arrested him

  587. because his

  588. hour had

  589. not yet

  590. come.

  591. Chapter 12,

  592. verse 23,

  593. the hour

  594. has come

  595. for the

  596. Son of

  597. Man to

  598. be glorified.

  599. Same

  600. chapter.

  601. Now is

  602. my soul

  603. troubled,

  604. and what

  605. shall I

  606. say?

  607. Father,

  608. save me

  609. from this

  610. hour,

  611. but for

  612. this purpose

  613. I have

  614. come to

  615. this hour.

  616. Chapter 13,

  617. verse 1,

  618. this is the

  619. time when

  620. Jesus is with

  621. his disciples

  622. in the

  623. upper room.

  624. Now before

  625. the feast

  626. of Passover,

  627. when Jesus

  628. knew that

  629. his hour

  630. had come

  631. to depart

  632. out of the

  633. world to

  634. the Father,

  635. having loved

  636. his own

  637. who were

  638. in the

  639. world,

  640. he loved

  641. them to

  642. the end.

  643. And then

  644. in that

  645. prayer that

  646. Jesus prayed

  647. to the

  648. Father in

  649. John 17,

    John 17:1

  650. verse 1,

  651. it says,

  652. Father,

  653. the hour

  654. has come.

  655. Glorify

  656. your Son

  657. that the

  658. Son may

  659. glorify you.

  660. So Jesus

  661. was saying

  662. that what

  663. was to

  664. come was

  665. his focus.

  666. This wasn't

  667. that.

  668. The fact

  669. that he

  670. ran out

  671. of wine

  672. wasn't

  673. that,

  674. that wasn't

  675. his hour.

  676. That's not

  677. the point.

  678. But there

  679. was a

  680. request and

  681. there was a

  682. miracle.

  683. And so what

  684. is all this

  685. about?

  686. So let's

  687. look at the

  688. supernatural

  689. demonstration

  690. here.

  691. Let's start

  692. with what

  693. the miracle

  694. was.

  695. Whatever

  696. else we do

  697. with this

  698. account,

  699. Jesus does

  700. do a

  701. miracle.

  702. Now there

  703. was an

  704. Old Testament

  705. connection

  706. between

  707. weddings and

  708. wine and

  709. the coming

  710. of Messiah,

  711. believe it or

  712. not,

  713. in the

  714. Messianic

  715. age.

  716. You could

  717. find a

  718. little bit

  719. of that

  720. in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  721. chapter 31,

  722. a little bit

  723. in Hosea

    Hosea 14 chapter mention

  724. chapter 14.

  725. There's also

  726. some interesting

  727. connections with

  728. this in Amos

    Amos 9 chapter mention

  729. chapter 9.

  730. I'm going to

  731. read a few

  732. verses from

  733. there.

  734. Behold,

  735. the days are

  736. coming,

  737. declares the

  738. Lord,

  739. when the

  740. plowman shall

  741. overtake the

  742. reaper,

  743. and the

  744. treader of

  745. grapes,

  746. he who

  747. sows the

  748. seed.

  749. The

  750. mountains

  751. shall drip

  752. sweet wine,

  753. and all the

  754. hills shall

  755. flow with it.

  756. I will

  757. restore the

  758. fortunes of

  759. my people

  760. Israel,

  761. and they

  762. shall rebuild

  763. the ruined

  764. cities and

  765. inhabit them,

  766. and they

  767. shall plant

  768. vineyards and

  769. drink their

  770. wine,

  771. and they

  772. shall make

  773. gardens and

  774. eat their

  775. fruit.

  776. I will

  777. plant them

  778. on their

  779. land,

  780. and they

  781. shall never

  782. again be

  783. uprooted out

  784. of the land

  785. that I have

  786. given them,

  787. says the

  788. Lord your

  789. God.

  790. In other

  791. words,

  792. Jesus makes

  793. it clear that

  794. his time had

  795. not yet come,

  796. but this is a

  797. solid statement

  798. regarding the

  799. identity of

  800. him coming

  801. ultimately as

  802. the Messiah to

  803. establish his

  804. kingdom.

  805. His glory is

  806. about to show

  807. up.

  808. So the

  809. narrative is

  810. fairly easy to

  811. understand.

  812. Again, it's a

  813. wedding, the

  814. wine is gone,

  815. and the host is

  816. about to be

  817. greatly embarrassed.

  818. Mary speaks to

  819. Jesus.

  820. Why did Mary go

  821. to Jesus?

  822. Was she

  823. expecting him to

  824. do a miracle?

  825. Keep in mind,

  826. what does the

  827. scripture say in

  828. this text about

  829. this miracle?

  830. It was the

  831. first one.

  832. Jesus hadn't

  833. done any

  834. miracles yet.

  835. So it's

  836. probably not

  837. that.

  838. Perhaps

  839. whenever there

  840. was a problem

  841. at home,

  842. she may have

  843. turned to him

  844. for help or

  845. counsel or

  846. advice.

  847. We don't

  848. know.

  849. But certainly

  850. Jesus always

  851. gave good

  852. counsel and

  853. he was always

  854. compassionate

  855. toward others.

  856. Mary simply

  857. said they have

  858. no wine.

  859. Jesus reminded

  860. her of her

  861. place and

  862. his place and

  863. then he gave

  864. the servants

  865. the assignment.

  866. Fill six stone

  867. water pots.

  868. And they do

  869. that.

  870. Now think about

  871. that.

  872. These big pots,

  873. 20 to 30

  874. gallons, and

  875. six of those

  876. are filled.

  877. That's pretty

  878. interesting.

  879. And the

  880. servants know

  881. that they put

  882. water in the

  883. pots, right?

  884. Okay.

  885. So they do it.

  886. So he gives

  887. the second

  888. assignment.

  889. Draw some out

  890. for the master

  891. of the banquet.

  892. I wonder what

  893. they were thinking

  894. right about then.

  895. Oh, this is not

  896. going to be good.

  897. They do.

  898. And the water

  899. is now wine.

  900. But not just

  901. any wine.

  902. The best wine.

  903. So what's the

  904. miracle point

  905. to?

  906. Well, again,

  907. resisting the

  908. temptation to go

  909. beyond the

  910. text.

  911. I think we can

  912. say with some

  913. confidence that

  914. there may be

  915. some symbolism

  916. here.

  917. The water pots

  918. were to hold

  919. water for

  920. ceremonial washings

  921. or cleansings.

  922. What Jesus did

  923. was to replace

  924. that situation,

  925. those ceremonial

  926. cleansings,

  927. with something

  928. new and

  929. something better.

  930. In chapter 1,

  931. verses 16 and

  932. 17 of the

  933. Gospel of John,

  934. Mike mentioned

  935. this a number

  936. of times.

  937. For from his

  938. fullness we have

  939. received grace

  940. upon grace.

  941. For the law

  942. was given

  943. through Moses,

  944. grace and

  945. truth came

  946. through Jesus

  947. Christ.

  948. In other words,

  949. something new,

  950. something better.

  951. So there's

  952. coming a day

  953. when Jesus

  954. shall supply all

  955. that's needed

  956. at a great

  957. banquet at a

  958. Messianic,

  959. as the best

  960. Messianic bridegroom.

  961. Though the time

  962. has not yet

  963. come,

  964. come it will.

  965. Certainly this

  966. is true,

  967. but does this

  968. miracle have

  969. anything to do

  970. with that?

  971. Well,

  972. some would also

  973. suggest that

  974. just the sheer

  975. quantity of wine

  976. might speak of

  977. the lavish

  978. provision of

  979. the age to

  980. come,

  981. perhaps.

  982. But whatever

  983. else we can

  984. make of this

  985. event,

  986. this is the

  987. beginning of

  988. the unveiling

  989. of God.

  990. That is,

  991. God who is

  992. now veiled

  993. in human

  994. flesh.

  995. And this

  996. leads to the

  997. final point,

  998. the divine

  999. revelation.

  1000. Jesus,

  1001. the Messiah.

  1002. Remember that

  1003. John had said

  1004. about these

  1005. signs and the

  1006. design for

  1007. them.

  1008. These signs

  1009. would give

  1010. ample proof

  1011. that Jesus

  1012. was the

  1013. Christ,

  1014. the

  1015. anointed

  1016. one,

  1017. the Messiah.

  1018. The miracle

  1019. was more

  1020. than just a

  1021. great

  1022. demonstration

  1023. of Jesus'

  1024. power.

  1025. This was a

  1026. revelation of

  1027. his deity.

  1028. Keep in

  1029. mind that

  1030. this is

  1031. the bridge

  1032. between

  1033. Jesus'

  1034. private life

  1035. and his

  1036. public

  1037. ministry.

  1038. See,

  1039. people knew

  1040. him,

  1041. but they

  1042. didn't really

  1043. know him.

  1044. Actually,

  1045. this was only

  1046. a semi-public

  1047. because only a

  1048. few people

  1049. knew what

  1050. happened.

  1051. Most had

  1052. no idea.

  1053. They just

  1054. thought the

  1055. wedding host

  1056. had saved

  1057. the best

  1058. wine for

  1059. last.

  1060. And then

  1061. there's Jesus

  1062. the glory.

  1063. John declares

  1064. this to be

  1065. the first

  1066. of Jesus'

  1067. miraculous

  1068. signs.

  1069. What does

  1070. first mean?

  1071. I got

  1072. first in

  1073. the race.

  1074. That never

  1075. happened,

  1076. really,

  1077. but I got

  1078. first in

  1079. the race.

  1080. That would

  1081. be chronological.

  1082. First one

  1083. across the

  1084. line.

  1085. But first

  1086. can also

  1087. mean primary.

  1088. That is,

  1089. most important.

  1090. Perhaps

  1091. John was

  1092. saying that

  1093. this miracle

  1094. was of

  1095. primary

  1096. importance

  1097. because it

  1098. pointed to

  1099. something

  1100. altogether

  1101. new.

  1102. You see,

  1103. something new

  1104. was happening

  1105. here of

  1106. great importance.

  1107. And so

  1108. what we're

  1109. doing is

  1110. we're building

  1111. the foundation

  1112. of showing

  1113. the glory

  1114. of God

  1115. as Jesus

  1116. presents

  1117. himself.

  1118. What John

  1119. said in

  1120. chapter 1

  1121. verse 14,

  1122. we have

  1123. seen his

  1124. glory full

  1125. of grace

  1126. and truth

  1127. is here

  1128. inaugurated.

  1129. By this

  1130. first sign,

  1131. Jesus revealed

  1132. something of

  1133. his glory.

  1134. Though his

  1135. glory would

  1136. be revealed

  1137. in greater

  1138. measure in

  1139. his cross

  1140. work and

  1141. the resurrection

  1142. and his

  1143. exaltation,

  1144. every step

  1145. along the

  1146. way

  1147. shows us

  1148. this course

  1149. of his

  1150. ministry

  1151. is marked

  1152. by glory.

  1153. Particularly

  1154. the disciples

  1155. and we

  1156. who read

  1157. the gospel

  1158. accounts

  1159. are given

  1160. an unfolding

  1161. picture

  1162. of the

  1163. revelation

  1164. of his

  1165. glory.

  1166. It

  1167. basically

  1168. begins

  1169. here.

  1170. So the

  1171. servants,

  1172. when they

  1173. saw the

  1174. sign

  1175. that happened,

  1176. they saw

  1177. that,

  1178. but they

  1179. didn't see

  1180. the glory.

  1181. The

  1182. disciples

  1183. perceived

  1184. Jesus'

  1185. glory

  1186. behind

  1187. the

  1188. sign

  1189. and

  1190. they

  1191. put

  1192. their

  1193. faith

  1194. in

  1195. him.

  1196. It

  1197. was

  1198. early

  1199. and

  1200. there

  1201. would

  1202. be

  1203. many

  1204. more

  1205. signs,

  1206. but this

  1207. is the

  1208. beginning

  1209. of the

  1210. revelation

  1211. of his

  1212. glory.

  1213. That's

  1214. why John

  1215. includes

  1216. this story

  1217. of the

  1218. miraculous

  1219. wedding

  1220. wine.

  1221. Do you

  1222. see

  1223. something

  1224. of his

  1225. glory?

  1226. Jesus

  1227. is starting

  1228. to show

  1229. who he

  1230. is.

  1231. Now

  1232. remember

  1233. these things

  1234. were written

  1235. that we

  1236. might believe

  1237. that Jesus

  1238. is the

  1239. Son of

  1240. God

  1241. and that by

  1242. believing we

  1243. might have

  1244. life in

  1245. his name.

  1246. That was the

  1247. effect of this

  1248. miracle and

  1249. the others that

  1250. John recorded

  1251. on the lives

  1252. of his

  1253. disciples.

  1254. It's not the

  1255. miracles per se

  1256. that caused

  1257. people to

  1258. believe.

  1259. Miracles do

  1260. not in

  1261. themselves

  1262. produce

  1263. faith.

  1264. But the

  1265. miracles revealed

  1266. the person

  1267. of Christ

  1268. Christ.

  1269. And when

  1270. the disciples

  1271. saw who

  1272. he was

  1273. they saw

  1274. him for

  1275. who he

  1276. was.

  1277. They saw

  1278. his glory

  1279. and they

  1280. continued to

  1281. place their

  1282. trust in

  1283. him.

  1284. Throughout

  1285. Jesus'

  1286. ministry he

  1287. manifested

  1288. his glory.

  1289. Some saw

  1290. it and

  1291. believed.

  1292. Others

  1293. were present

  1294. but did

  1295. they see

  1296. it?

  1297. They

  1298. know some

  1299. of them even

  1300. called for

  1301. his death.

  1302. Today

  1303. through the

  1304. pages of

  1305. scripture and

  1306. in the

  1307. proclamation of

  1308. the word we

  1309. can see his

  1310. glory.

  1311. Some believe

  1312. some turn

  1313. away.

  1314. But whatever

  1315. our response

  1316. to the glory

  1317. of God is

  1318. it is glory

  1319. and he is

  1320. God.

  1321. Reject him

  1322. and you've

  1323. rejected the

  1324. God of glory.

  1325. Receive him

  1326. and you have

  1327. received the

  1328. God of glory.

  1329. glory.

  1330. So who

  1331. could

  1332. wondrously

  1333. save you

  1334. and bring

  1335. you all

  1336. the way

  1337. home to

  1338. his glorious

  1339. presence?

  1340. This

  1341. glorious

  1342. God.

  1343. And all

  1344. along the

  1345. way if we

  1346. are paying

  1347. attention we

  1348. can see his

  1349. glory and

  1350. there's more.

  1351. This I find

  1352. interesting.

  1353. Paul picks up

  1354. this theme

  1355. and he says

  1356. this.

  1357. Just listen to

  1358. what he said

  1359. to the

  1360. Corinthians in

  1361. the second

  1362. letter in

  1363. chapter 3.

  1364. And we

  1365. all with

  1366. unveiled face

  1367. beholding the

  1368. glory of

  1369. the Lord

  1370. are being

  1371. transformed

  1372. into the

  1373. same image

  1374. from one

  1375. degree of

  1376. glory to

  1377. another.

  1378. It's not

  1379. just seeing

  1380. the glory of

  1381. God.

  1382. When we see

  1383. it God is

  1384. changing us

  1385. to make us

  1386. more like

  1387. him.

  1388. And so

  1389. as Paul said

  1390. we are being

  1391. transformed

  1392. into that

  1393. same image

  1394. from one

  1395. degree of

  1396. glory to

  1397. another.

  1398. The commentator

  1399. that I mentioned

  1400. at the beginning

  1401. of this message

  1402. had this to

  1403. say about

  1404. these miracles.

  1405. These seven

  1406. miracles then

  1407. are preeminently

  1408. signs because

  1409. they point to

  1410. those aspects

  1411. of Jesus'

  1412. ministry in

  1413. which he

  1414. demonstrated

  1415. his transcendent

  1416. control over

  1417. the factors of

  1418. life with

  1419. which man is

  1420. unable to

  1421. cope.

  1422. Quality,

  1423. space,

  1424. time,

  1425. quantity,

  1426. natural law,

  1427. misfortune,

  1428. and death

  1429. circumscribe

  1430. humanity's

  1431. world.

  1432. Daily

  1433. existence is

  1434. a struggle

  1435. against these

  1436. limitations.

  1437. Christ's

  1438. superiority over

  1439. them as

  1440. revealed in

  1441. these events

  1442. called signs

  1443. was proof

  1444. of his deity

  1445. and a clue

  1446. to understanding

  1447. what the

  1448. writer desired

  1449. to say about

  1450. him.

  1451. So back

  1452. to where

  1453. we started,

  1454. these things

  1455. are written

  1456. that you

  1457. might believe

  1458. that Jesus

  1459. is the

  1460. Christ,

  1461. the Son of

  1462. God,

  1463. and that

  1464. believing you

  1465. might have

  1466. life in

  1467. his name.

  1468. These things

  1469. were recorded

  1470. so you would

  1471. see Jesus

  1472. for who he

  1473. is.

  1474. And that we

  1475. would believe

  1476. and that our

  1477. faith would be

  1478. strengthened as

  1479. we are

  1480. transformed by

  1481. the glory

  1482. of God.

  1483. God.

  1484. So when the

  1485. Bible speaks

  1486. of life

  1487. through his

  1488. name, it's

  1489. not just mere

  1490. existence, it

  1491. is life defined

  1492. by Jesus

  1493. himself.

  1494. In John

    John 17:3

  1495. chapter 17

  1496. verse 3 in

  1497. his high

  1498. priestly prayer

  1499. if you will,

  1500. to the Father

  1501. right before his

  1502. arrest and

  1503. crucifixion, he

  1504. said,

  1505. and this is

  1506. eternal life

  1507. that they may

  1508. know you, the

  1509. only true God,

  1510. and Jesus

  1511. Christ whom

  1512. you have

  1513. sent.

  1514. Do you

  1515. know him?

  1516. And the

  1517. word became

  1518. flesh and

  1519. dwelt among

  1520. us and we

  1521. have seen

  1522. what?

  1523. His glory.

  1524. Glory as of

  1525. the only son

  1526. from the

  1527. Father, full

  1528. of grace and

  1529. truth.

  1530. Is he the

  1531. object of

  1532. your trust?

  1533. Are you

  1534. seeing his

  1535. glory?

  1536. And as

  1537. Pastor Mike

  1538. works our way

  1539. through the

  1540. gospel of

  1541. John, you'll

  1542. begin to see

  1543. glory after

  1544. glory after

  1545. glory stacked

  1546. on top of

  1547. glory of who

  1548. Jesus is.

  1549. And when you

  1550. start to see

  1551. him for who

  1552. he is and

  1553. you embrace

  1554. him for who

  1555. he is and

  1556. you trust him

  1557. for who he

  1558. is and you

  1559. worship him,

  1560. he begins to

  1561. do something in

  1562. you that changes

  1563. you into,

  1564. this is amazing,

  1565. into an image

  1566. like unto

  1567. himself.

  1568. We're just

  1569. getting started,

  1570. but that's the

  1571. picture.

  1572. Do you know

  1573. him?

  1574. Have you

  1575. trusted him?

  1576. Have you

  1577. seen his

  1578. glory?

  1579. Are you

  1580. worshiping him?

  1581. That's the

  1582. question.

  1583. Let's pray.

  1584. Father, thank

  1585. you for this

  1586. text.

  1587. Thank you for

  1588. everyone here

  1589. today that has

  1590. opportunity to

  1591. read from

  1592. your word

  1593. these accounts

  1594. of the life

  1595. of the Lord

  1596. Jesus and

  1597. to see one

  1598. event on top

  1599. of another

  1600. showing,

  1601. demonstrating,

  1602. declaring your

  1603. glory.

  1604. May we not

  1605. only see it,

  1606. but may we

  1607. embrace it

  1608. and bask in

  1609. it, be

  1610. overwhelmed by

  1611. it.

  1612. May you

  1613. cause us to

  1614. bow before

  1615. you, worship

  1616. you with our

  1617. whole heart

  1618. because we

  1619. see who you

  1620. are.

  1621. Thank you,

  1622. Lord Jesus,

  1623. for your

  1624. grace and

  1625. your mercy.

  1626. Thank you for

  1627. the salvation

  1628. that you bring.

  1629. And if there

  1630. are some here

  1631. who do not

  1632. know you,

  1633. Father, I

  1634. pray that you

  1635. would quicken

  1636. their hearts

  1637. to believe

  1638. the gospel.

  1639. That you

  1640. would give

  1641. them new

  1642. life in

  1643. you.

  1644. Thank you

  1645. for our

  1646. time together.

  1647. May you be

  1648. glorified in

  1649. all that we

  1650. say and do

  1651. for the glory

  1652. of your name

  1653. we pray.

  1654. Amen.
