  1. You may be seated.

  2. And kids, you may not be excused.

  3. You are trapped in this room with the adults.

  4. As you notice, you have a bulletin.

  5. !

  6. 13 through 25, it's on page 1054 of your Pew Bible.

  7. Hear the word of God.

  8. The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  9. In the temple, he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons,

  10. and the money changers sitting there.

  11. And making a whip of cords, he drove them out,

  12. and brought them all out of the temple with the sheep and oxen,

  13. and he poured out the coins of the money changers,

  14. and overturned their tables.

  15. And he told those who sold the pigeons,

  16. Take these things away.

  17. Do not make my father's house a house of trade.

  18. His disciples remembered that it was written,

  19. Zeal for your house will consume me.

  20. So the Jews said to him,

  21. What sign do you show us for doing these things?

  22. Jesus answered them,

  23. Destroy this temple.

  24. And in three days, I will raise it up.

  25. The Jews then said,

  26. It has taken 46 years to build this temple,

  27. and you will raise it up in three days?

  28. But he was speaking about the temple of his body.

  29. When therefore he was raised from the dead,

  30. his disciples remembered that he had said this,

  31. and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

  32. Now, verse 23,

  33. Now, when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast,

  34. many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.

  35. But Jesus, on his part,

  36. did not entrust himself to them,

  37. because he knew all people,

  38. and needed no one to bear witness about man,

  39. for he himself knew what was in man.

  40. May God bless the hearing of his word.

  41. Imagine you and your extended family are at a holiday gathering,

  42. a shared meal.

  43. Your Uncle Richie suddenly stands up and announces that he is a she,

  44. a woman trapped in a man's body.

  45. He goes on to say that he has started hormone therapy two months ago.

  46. Furthermore, he has filed divorce from your aunt,

  47. your Aunt Peggy of 20 years marriage.

  48. And then he says,

  49. Oh, by the way, my name's not Richie, it's Rachel.

  50. Shocked, you look at your Aunt Peggy,

  51. tears streaming down her face.

  52. She quietly gets up and leaves the table.

  53. Do you know what you call that?

  54. That's called a bombshell.

  55. When someone makes this unexpected and disruptive announcement,

  56. but not all bombshells are bad.

  57. Your phone buzzes.

  58. You don't recognize the phone number.

  59. So you ignore it.

  60. A minute later, you hear another ding.

  61. A voicemail has been left.

  62. And so you listen to the voicemail.

  63. Let me get into character.

  64. Hello, my name is Terrence Mayhew.

  65. I'm the estate attorney of your distant relative, Aunt Edith.

  66. Please call me at your earliest convenience.

  67. So you call back.

  68. And immediately, you hear from Attorney Mayhew.

  69. He informs you that your reclusive Aunt Edith,

  70. that you met once,

  71. that she had died,

  72. and that she had made you the sole beneficiary

  73. of her $27.4 million estate.

  74. Bombshell.

  75. Unexpected.

  76. Disruptive.

  77. As in a $27.4 million disruption.

  78. That's not that bad, is it?

  79. This morning, you're going to see Jesus drop a theological bombshell.

  80. A theological bombshell that changes the way we worship.

  81. Unexpected.

  82. Disruptive.

  83. In the best sense.

  84. It's good news.

  85. And so this is how we're going to proceed this morning.

  86. It's outlined in your bulletin.

  87. We're going to answer three questions.

  88. What happens?

  89. What happens in the account?

  90. We'll walk through that.

  91. We're going to see the temple.

  92. We're going to see the whip.

  93. We're going to see the bombshell.

  94. And we're going to see the x-ray knowledge.

  95. And then we're going to ask,

  96. what's the point?

  97. What's this getting at?

  98. And then we're going to ask,

  99. to wrap things up,

  100. so what?

  101. What difference does this make for us now?

  102. So, what's happening in this account?

  103. Let's start with the temple.

  104. The backdrop.

  105. The first thing you need to notice about this passage

  106. is that it starts and ends in verse 13,

  107. and then in verse 23, it's framed.

  108. Did you notice that?

  109. With a reference to the Passover in Jerusalem in verse 13,

  110. and then in verse 23,

  111. we have the Passover feast in Jerusalem again.

  112. It's framing the passage.

  113. It's the backdrop for what this is happening.

  114. The Passover was one of these annual Jewish feasts.

  115. It was a high holiday among the Jews,

  116. and they would pilgrimage to Jerusalem

  117. to observe the Passover.

  118. And if you're a little kind of rusty

  119. on what the Passover is,

  120. in Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  121. it's the 10th plague.

  122. God makes this decree to Pharaoh,

  123. and through Moses,

  124. that he is going to send out the angel of death

  125. as the 10th plague,

  126. the final plague.

  127. And what the Jews needed to do at twilight

  128. was to sacrifice a lamb.

  129. And they were to wipe the blood of that Passover lamb

  130. onto their homes,

  131. and when the angel of death rolled out

  132. to kill the firstborn,

  133. it would pass over the firstborn children of Israel.

  134. It was the Passover.

  135. And so it became a feast

  136. in which the people of Israel

  137. would observe every spring,

  138. every April,

  139. and they would kill a Passover lamb at twilight.

  140. John the Baptist, remember,

  141. referenced Jesus in chapter 1

  142. as the Lamb of God.

  143. So the Passover's going on.

  144. It's a big deal.

  145. And it's taking place in Jerusalem.

  146. Zion, the city of David,

  147. the central city of Israel.

  148. It's where Jewish worship took place,

  149. and during the Passover,

  150. it would swell from 35 to 50,000 people.

  151. It would swell up to about 150 to 250,000 people.

  152. It was a big deal.

  153. And so this passage begins and ends

  154. with a reference to Passover in Jerusalem.

  155. But there's a reason why

  156. that we're being shown this.

  157. Because the temple is in Jerusalem.

  158. It's the central place of Israel's worship

  159. because that's where God dwelt.

  160. God would dwell in the temple

  161. in the Holy of Holies.

  162. He would be present with His people in the temple.

  163. You could say that the whole Bible

  164. is a story of God seeking to dwell with His people.

  165. Remember back in Genesis,

  166. Adam and Eve dwelling with God in the garden?

  167. When Israel was delivered out of Egypt,

  168. God dwelt with them with a pillar of cloud by day

  169. and a pillar of fire by night.

  170. After the giving of the law at Sinai,

  171. they were instructed to build the tabernacle,

  172. which was this very elaborate portable tent

  173. made of animal skin.

  174. And God would dwell with His people as they wandered.

  175. And then there was the building of Solomon's temple

  176. in 2 Chronicles 3.

  177. And the cloud of God's presence

  178. came and dwelt within the temple

  179. in 2 Chronicles 6.

  180. But that temple was destroyed

  181. by Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon in 586.

  182. And then it was rebuilt in 516.

  183. And that second temple,

  184. which was not as glorious as the first,

  185. that second temple was then expanded

  186. by Herod the Great in 20 to 18 BC.

  187. It started the kind of expansion

  188. and the second temple,

  189. the temple of Herod,

  190. became this magnificent,

  191. very elaborate structure.

  192. It was not just the temple,

  193. but it had courts and other structures.

  194. It was incredibly impressive.

  195. And what was believed is that God dwelt in the temple,

  196. in the Holy of Holies.

  197. That temple was central to Jewish worship in Jesus' day.

  198. And Jews believed that the temple

  199. was the dwelling place of God.

  200. And so the temple is the backdrop of this account,

  201. the dwelling place of God.

  202. So now we move from the temple,

  203. the backdrop, to the whip.

  204. In verses 13 and 17,

  205. Jesus comes into,

  206. not just Jerusalem,

  207. but into the temple.

  208. You see in verse 14,

  209. in the temple,

  210. he found those who were selling oxen.

  211. What I want you to see in this little section

  212. is that Jesus finds something,

  213. and then he makes something,

  214. and then he says something.

  215. What does he find?

  216. In verse 14,

  217. he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons

  218. and the money changers sitting there.

  219. Like, what's the big deal?

  220. It's where he found it.

  221. He found, basically,

  222. the first century Amazon.com

  223. in the temple complex.

  224. It'd be fine if it was outside of the temple complex,

  225. but it was in the temple complex,

  226. where God was to be worshipped.

  227. And so the selling of these animals,

  228. oxen, sheep, and pigeons,

  229. they were animals used for sacrifice.

  230. And he also finds money changers sitting at the tables.

  231. These money changers had set up shop.

  232. They had booths.

  233. This was a marketplace.

  234. Do you remember

  235. why Jesus is there?

  236. He had come to Jerusalem for the Passover.

  237. You may be wondering,

  238. why are all these animals and money changers

  239. in the temple to begin with?

  240. Well, remember,

  241. this is the Passover.

  242. And it was big business

  243. for certain people in Jerusalem

  244. because people would make,

  245. Jews would make pilgrimage

  246. into Jerusalem from all around.

  247. And think about it.

  248. I know,

  249. isn't it difficult to travel with toddlers?

  250. Just give me an amen.

  251. Amen.

  252. Could you imagine traveling

  253. with oxen and sheep and pigeons?

  254. That'd be really tough.

  255. And so what pilgrims would do

  256. is they would come to Jerusalem

  257. and buy their animals

  258. to sacrifice in Jerusalem.

  259. But the other problem that raises

  260. is that they were coming with money

  261. from the regions that they dwelt in.

  262. And so they needed to exchange money

  263. in order to get into the temple currency

  264. in order to buy these animals to sacrifice.

  265. And so you have money changers

  266. who are making a buck

  267. by exchanging money

  268. from these different regions

  269. into temple currency.

  270. And so it's a whole operation.

  271. And don't forget,

  272. this city swells

  273. to a quarter of a million people

  274. during the Passover.

  275. This is big business.

  276. So this is what Jesus finds.

  277. Those making pilgrimage

  278. are buying animals

  279. and needing to exchange currency

  280. in order for them to

  281. offer their Passover sacrifice.

  282. How does Jesus respond?

  283. He makes something.

  284. And making a whip of cords,

  285. he drove them all out of the temple

  286. with the sheep and oxen

  287. and he poured out the coins

  288. of the money changers

  289. and overturned the tables.

  290. Verse 15.

  291. A whip of cords.

  292. He's using the whip

  293. to drive out

  294. all of those people

  295. who are selling,

  296. but he's also using the whip

  297. to drive out oxen and sheep.

  298. Have you ever tried

  299. to push an ox before?

  300. The whip is very helpful.

  301. And so he is using the whip

  302. in order to clear the temple,

  303. to clear the temple courts

  304. of what is happening.

  305. And he doesn't stop

  306. with clearing out

  307. the oxen and the sheep.

  308. He makes something else.

  309. He makes an even bigger scene

  310. is what he does.

  311. He pours out the coins

  312. of the money changers

  313. and he overturns their tables.

  314. Jesus isn't being nice.

  315. This might be surprising to you.

  316. This is more like anger.

  317. This is more like being zealous.

  318. Like he's saying,

  319. this is not right.

  320. This is wrong.

  321. Maybe you're not used

  322. to seeing Jesus this way.

  323. Why is Jesus acting this way?

  324. Well, he says so.

  325. He explains to us

  326. why he's doing this

  327. in verse 16.

  328. He says to those

  329. who are selling the pigeons,

  330. take these things away.

  331. In the Michael J. Salvati

  332. translation,

  333. get out of here.

  334. Get these things out of here.

  335. And then he tells us why.

  336. Do not make my father's house

  337. a house of trade.

  338. That's the reason.

  339. Do not make my father's house

  340. a house of trade.

  341. You see,

  342. these business people had

  343. by their greed,

  344. their desire to make up up,

  345. but they had repurposed

  346. the temple of God.

  347. Instead of worshiping God

  348. and praying to him,

  349. it became a place

  350. to line their pockets.

  351. You see,

  352. worship is about God,

  353. not about us,

  354. not about created things.

  355. And so what Jesus does here

  356. is he's very purposefully

  357. in measured steps

  358. clearing the temple

  359. because he is jealous

  360. for God's glory.

  361. He's jealous that God

  362. would be worshipped rightly.

  363. This is a righteous zeal,

  364. a righteous anger

  365. in the Son of God.

  366. Jesus is jealous for God

  367. to be worshipped rightly.

  368. And the disciples see that.

  369. And it's not clear

  370. whether they remember this

  371. after he's been raised

  372. from the dead

  373. or they think about this

  374. on the spot,

  375. but we see in verse 17,

  376. they remember what it was written

  377. in Psalm 69, 9,

  378. zeal for your house

  379. will consume me.

  380. This is,

  381. it's a Psalm of David

  382. and Jesus is David's

  383. greater son.

  384. And David in Psalm 69,

  385. he is being ridiculed

  386. and he's being scorned

  387. because he takes God seriously.

  388. He makes enemies

  389. in Psalm 69.

  390. And Jesus makes

  391. some enemies here.

  392. So what we have

  393. with the whip,

  394. this whole picture

  395. in verses 13 through 17

  396. is Jesus finding something,

  397. making something,

  398. and then saying something.

  399. He is jealous

  400. that God would be rightly worshipped,

  401. which brings us

  402. to the bombshell

  403. in verses 18 through 22.

  404. And in verses 18, 22,

  405. we have a new set of characters

  406. that come onto the scene.

  407. So the Jews said to him,

  408. now you might be thinking,

  409. Jews, hold on a second.

  410. Weren't all those people

  411. in the temple

  412. that Jesus kicked out,

  413. weren't they all Jews?

  414. They were Jews too.

  415. These Jews are

  416. a different set of Jews.

  417. They are,

  418. John uses this phrase,

  419. by and large,

  420. to describe

  421. the Jewish religious authorities

  422. in Jerusalem.

  423. So these are the Jews

  424. that Jesus is now talking to.

  425. This is a group

  426. that's representing

  427. the Jewish establishment.

  428. And they asked Jesus,

  429. hey, what sign do you show us

  430. for doing these things?

  431. They're asking him,

  432. on what basis,

  433. what gives you the right

  434. to do this?

  435. They're asking for a sign.

  436. You know,

  437. when Moses before Pharaoh,

  438. the staff,

  439. became a snake,

  440. serpent,

  441. you remember that?

  442. That's a sign.

  443. I'm not sure if you know this,

  444. but Isaiah walked around

  445. naked for three years

  446. as a sign.

  447. Jeremiah wore an ox yoke

  448. as a sign.

  449. Hosea married a prostitute

  450. as a sign.

  451. It legitimized

  452. that God's stamp

  453. of approval

  454. was on this prophet,

  455. was on this representative

  456. of his.

  457. And so they're asking,

  458. what's your sign?

  459. They're not,

  460. are you a Sagittarius?

  461. Not that.

  462. They're asking,

  463. by what authority

  464. are you doing this?

  465. Are you legitimate?

  466. And Jesus answers them.

  467. He's like,

  468. you want a sign?

  469. And here comes,

  470. here comes the bombshell.

  471. He says in verse 19,

  472. destroy this temple

  473. and in three days

  474. I will raise it up.

  475. That's a theological

  476. bombshell.

  477. What Jesus is saying there

  478. is incredibly profound.

  479. He's not talking about

  480. the temple of Herod

  481. that's behind him,

  482. while he's saying this.

  483. He's referring to

  484. another temple.

  485. In fact,

  486. in verse 20,

  487. the Jews think that

  488. he is speaking of

  489. Herod's temple.

  490. Look what they say.

  491. The Jews said,

  492. it has taken 46 years

  493. to build this temple

  494. and will you raise it up

  495. in three days?

  496. In other words,

  497. wait, wait, wait, wait.

  498. You're going to tear down

  499. this temple

  500. and rebuild it

  501. in three days?

  502. It's taken almost

  503. 50 years

  504. to get this temple

  505. to where it is right now.

  506. It's all elaborate,

  507. magnificent,

  508. magnificent.

  509. And so they're thinking

  510. brick and mortar.

  511. They're thinking

  512. we worship God

  513. in a place.

  514. But that's not what

  515. Jesus was talking about.

  516. And in verse 21,

  517. John tells us

  518. what Jesus was referring to.

  519. But he was speaking

  520. about the temple

  521. of his body.

  522. Bombshell!

  523. That same word

  524. for temple

  525. being referenced

  526. to Jesus' body

  527. was being referenced

  528. for Herod's temple.

  529. What Jesus is doing

  530. is he's reclaiming

  531. the temple.

  532. He's saying

  533. the temple

  534. is no longer

  535. this magnificent structure.

  536. The temple

  537. standing before you,

  538. the temple of God,

  539. God's dwelling place

  540. is now a person.

  541. In John 1.14,

  542. we read,

  543. the word

  544. became flesh

  545. and dwelt

  546. among us

  547. and tabernacled

  548. among us.

  549. And we beheld

  550. his glory,

  551. glory as of the one

  552. and only of the Father,

  553. full of grace

  554. and truth,

  555. full of steadfast love

  556. and faithfulness.

  557. You see,

  558. he is the greater temple.

  559. New and better.

  560. This is a gospel bombshell

  561. because he describes

  562. the gospel

  563. in a beautiful way.

  564. He describes

  565. his temple

  566. being destroyed,

  567. which is a reference

  568. to his being put to death.

  569. And then his being raised

  570. in three days

  571. is talking about

  572. his bodily resurrection.

  573. That's at the heart

  574. of the gospel.

  575. This is a gospel bombshell

  576. that is saying,

  577. no,

  578. it's no longer

  579. about gathering

  580. to meet God

  581. in that place.

  582. It's about

  583. worshiping God

  584. in this person,

  585. the person of Jesus Christ.

  586. It's a theological bombshell.

  587. After Jesus was raised

  588. from the dead,

  589. we see this in verse 22.

  590. His disciples

  591. remember this

  592. particular episode,

  593. this particular account.

  594. They remember

  595. that he said this

  596. and they believe

  597. the scripture.

  598. They're talking about

  599. Old Testament,

  600. Old Testament prophecies

  601. concerning the death

  602. and resurrection

  603. of the Messiah.

  604. We find things like,

  605. regarding the resurrection,

  606. in Psalm 1610,

  607. Psalm 2222,

  608. Isaiah 5310.

  609. These are all

  610. kind of anticipations

  611. of this one

  612. who would come,

  613. who would die

  614. and be raised again.

  615. But not just

  616. the scriptures,

  617. they see this

  618. as fulfillment

  619. of what Jesus said.

  620. It's the sign

  621. that has come true.

  622. You want a sign?

  623. You want to see a sign

  624. that I have the right

  625. to cleanse the temple,

  626. to purify worship?

  627. Here's the sign

  628. that I am going to die

  629. and be raised

  630. on the third day.

  631. Gospel bombshell.

  632. He has the authority

  633. to cleanse the temple

  634. because he is

  635. God's temple incarnate.

  636. There's a new temple

  637. in town.

  638. His name

  639. is Jesus.

  640. There's the bombshell

  641. and now we move

  642. to the x-ray knowledge.

  643. This is in 23-25.

  644. Again,

  645. this is the closing

  646. of this account

  647. and there's another reference

  648. to Jerusalem

  649. in verse 23

  650. and the Passover feast.

  651. But what this has all

  652. now happened

  653. with Jesus making

  654. this bombshell claim

  655. that there's another temple

  656. in town,

  657. an incarnate dwelling place

  658. of God.

  659. God is with us.

  660. In verse 23,

  661. we are told

  662. that many saw.

  663. Look at verse 23.

  664. Now,

  665. when he was in Jerusalem

  666. and the Passover feast,

  667. many believed in his name

  668. when they saw the signs

  669. that he was doing.

  670. And so,

  671. apparently at this time,

  672. Jesus was performing

  673. all sorts of different

  674. kinds of signs.

  675. at the end of John,

  676. in John chapter 20,

    John 20:30

  677. verses 30 and 31,

  678. John explicitly tells us

  679. he didn't write

  680. in this gospel

  681. all the signs

  682. that Jesus did.

  683. He left a bunch out.

  684. And so,

  685. we can be assured

  686. that there's other things

  687. that Jesus did

  688. and people are saying,

  689. we believe in you,

  690. Jesus.

  691. We will follow you

  692. wherever you go.

  693. We'll make you

  694. the king.

  695. They are responding

  696. to him.

  697. They are accepting him.

  698. They are embracing him.

  699. And you would think

  700. that this is a good thing

  701. until you reach 24 and 25.

  702. But Jesus,

  703. on his part,

  704. did not entrust himself

  705. to them.

  706. He was being embraced,

  707. but he did not

  708. embrace them back.

  709. Because he knew

  710. all people

  711. and needed no one

  712. to bear witness

  713. about man,

  714. for he himself

  715. knew what was in man.

  716. The key word

  717. in verses 23,

  718. 24, and 25,

  719. it's repeated,

  720. one word repeated twice.

  721. It's the word knew.

  722. K-N-E-W.

  723. Because he knew

  724. all people,

  725. verse 24,

  726. and at the end

  727. of verse 25,

  728. for he himself

  729. knew what was in man.

  730. The knowledge

  731. that's being talked about

  732. is an X-ray knowledge.

  733. Jesus knew

  734. what was going on

  735. in the inner workings

  736. of the people

  737. in Jerusalem

  738. at that moment.

  739. He's like,

  740. you're not going

  741. to get this by me.

  742. I know what's going on.

  743. I can see

  744. into your hearts.

  745. This is a divine knowledge.

  746. This is the first

  747. Samuel 16,

  748. six and seven

  749. kind of knowledge.

  750. Do you remember

  751. that word?

  752. God sends Samuel

  753. to Jesse's house

  754. to anoint the next king.

  755. And the first

  756. son of Jesse

  757. that comes out

  758. is this guy,

  759. six foot four.

  760. He's got 2.0 BMI.

  761. Good looking.

  762. He's just oozing leadership.

  763. Samuel's like,

  764. surely,

  765. here is God's anointed.

  766. Look at him.

  767. And God says to him,

  768. no, no, no, no.

  769. It's not,

  770. it's not my anointed.

  771. Where man looks

  772. at the appearance,

  773. God looks at the heart.

  774. And what's being attributed

  775. to Jesus right here

  776. is that divine

  777. x-ray knowledge

  778. that he looks

  779. at the heart.

  780. Jeremiah 17, 9 says,

  781. the heart is desperately wicked.

  782. Who can understand it?

  783. Jeremiah 17, 10 says,

  784. the Lord searches the hearts.

  785. He sees into us.

  786. He's got x-ray

  787. divine knowledge.

  788. Here's what this means.

  789. Jesus knows our hearts

  790. right now.

  791. Right now,

  792. he knows your heart.

  793. You can't hide

  794. your inner thoughts,

  795. your desires,

  796. your motivations from him.

  797. All eight plus billion people

  798. on the earth

  799. can't hide

  800. what's going on

  801. in their hearts

  802. from him right now.

  803. He knows what you prize.

  804. He knows what you buy

  805. and sell

  806. and the courts

  807. of your heart

  808. to worship.

  809. You see,

  810. it was the sinfulness

  811. within the hearts

  812. of men and women

  813. that caused

  814. these buyers

  815. and money exchangers

  816. to repurpose

  817. God's house

  818. into a house of trade.

  819. Our sinfulness

  820. in our hearts

  821. has the same effect.

  822. we repurpose

  823. created things

  824. to take the place

  825. and be worshipped

  826. instead of God.

  827. He knows what's in man.

  828. He knows that we're idolaters.

  829. 21st century idolaters.

  830. You see,

  831. Jesus couldn't be manipulated.

  832. He would not allow

  833. what people

  834. were saying

  835. and thinking

  836. and trying to get by him

  837. and convince him of

  838. and give him

  839. all sorts of thumbs up.

  840. He knew what was in a man.

  841. He knew that these people

  842. professing to believe

  843. in his name

  844. were not to be trusted.

  845. This faith,

  846. this belief

  847. was not genuine.

  848. He knows

  849. what's in man.

  850. He knows what's in us.

  851. He knows

  852. what are the inner workings

  853. of your hearts

  854. right now.

  855. And this all took place

  856. in the temple.

  857. In Jerusalem.

  858. During the Passover.

  859. There's the temple.

  860. There's the whip.

  861. There's the bombshell.

  862. And here is the x-ray vision.

  863. You can't fool Jesus.

  864. So what's the point?

  865. What's the point

  866. of these verses?

  867. Well, we've already seen it.

  868. It's the bombshell.

  869. It's this unexpected

  870. and disruptive announcement

  871. to show us

  872. that Jesus

  873. is God's new

  874. and better

  875. dwelling place,

  876. dwelling person

  877. with his people,

  878. which means

  879. God in Christ

  880. has provided for us

  881. a new and better way

  882. to worship him,

  883. to relate to him,

  884. to come into a relationship

  885. with him.

  886. It's new.

  887. This bombshell

  888. is Jesus saying,

  889. I have come

  890. to replace

  891. that temple of Herod.

  892. I have come

  893. to replace

  894. this brick

  895. and mortar temple

  896. with a

  897. flesh and blood

  898. temple.

  899. God's dwelling place

  900. incarnate.

  901. So worship

  902. is no longer

  903. at a centralized

  904. place,

  905. brothers and sisters.

  906. We no longer

  907. need to make

  908. pilgrimage

  909. to Jerusalem

  910. to worship

  911. at a building

  912. that's been

  913. raised and burned.

  914. We worship

  915. a centralized

  916. person

  917. who is alive

  918. and reigning

  919. today.

  920. The implication

  921. is that the old

  922. way of worshiping

  923. has now been

  924. made obsolete.

  925. Jesus is God's

  926. dwelling with us

  927. now,

  928. and it's taken

  929. place

  930. of the old

  931. way.

  932. In 70 AD,

  933. the Romans,

  934. they burned

  935. and flattened

  936. the temple

  937. of Herod.

  938. You know why

  939. it doesn't really

  940. matter to us?

  941. Because our

  942. identity

  943. isn't in a

  944. building.

  945. Our identity

  946. isn't in some

  947. kind of brick

  948. and mortar

  949. structure.

  950. We worship

  951. a person,

  952. not a place.

  953. Because Jesus

  954. died and was

  955. raised,

  956. we worship

  957. a risen

  958. Christ.

  959. The dwelling

  960. place of God

  961. is with us.

  962. It's a new

  963. way,

  964. and it's a

  965. better way.

  966. Now,

  967. we can gather

  968. as a church

  969. wherever,

  970. whenever,

  971. and with

  972. whoever.

  973. Because Jesus

  974. is the new

  975. and better

  976. temple,

  977. do you know

  978. that there

  979. are millions

  980. of churches

  981. worldwide

  982. that gather

  983. in multiple

  984. locations

  985. to worship

  986. Jesus?

  987. Right now.

  988. Do you know

  989. that because Jesus

  990. is a new

  991. and better

  992. temple on the

  993. Lord's Day,

  994. there are

  995. brothers and

  996. sisters

  997. worshiping

  998. God

  999. for every

  1000. minute of

  1001. every hour

  1002. of this

  1003. 24-hour

  1004. period we

  1005. call the

  1006. Lord's Day.

  1007. It's

  1008. nonstop

  1009. worship

  1010. among the

  1011. nations

  1012. around the

  1013. world.

  1014. Eric Tully

  1015. was part

  1016. of a

  1017. worship

  1018. service

  1019. that

  1020. probably

  1021. happened

  1022. four and

  1023. a half

  1024. hours ago,

  1025. five hours

  1026. ago in

  1027. Monrovia.

  1028. And then

  1029. there's been

  1030. worship all

  1031. around the

  1032. world.

  1033. It's a

  1034. better way

  1035. to worship

  1036. because Jesus

  1037. is the

  1038. new and

  1039. better

  1040. temple.

  1041. You don't

  1042. have to

  1043. become a

  1044. Jew in

  1045. order to

  1046. worship

  1047. God.

  1048. He has

  1049. millions of

  1050. church

  1051. congregations

  1052. all around

  1053. the world

  1054. that are

  1055. made up

  1056. of people

  1057. from all

  1058. sorts of

  1059. different

  1060. tribes and

  1061. tongues and

  1062. nations.

  1063. All these

  1064. Jews and

  1065. non-Jews,

  1066. Gentiles,

  1067. who have

  1068. come to

  1069. faith in

  1070. Jesus Christ.

  1071. You don't

  1072. need to

  1073. become a

  1074. Jew,

  1075. but you

  1076. do need

  1077. to trust

  1078. in the

  1079. one and

  1080. only Jesus.

  1081. You need

  1082. to believe

  1083. in him

  1084. alone for

  1085. your salvation.

  1086. You need

  1087. to put all

  1088. of your

  1089. chips by

  1090. faith onto

  1091. Jesus in

  1092. order to be

  1093. saved.

  1094. This is the

  1095. good news.

  1096. You see

  1097. that this

  1098. new temple,

  1099. he was

  1100. destroyed,

  1101. he died

  1102. and was

  1103. raised so

  1104. that you

  1105. could enter

  1106. a relationship,

  1107. an eternally

  1108. life-giving

  1109. relationship

  1110. with the

  1111. God of

  1112. the

  1113. universe.

  1114. It's

  1115. better.

  1116. More

  1117. people giving

  1118. more worship

  1119. to God.

  1120. And so the

  1121. point of

  1122. this passage

  1123. is to show

  1124. us that

  1125. Jesus is

  1126. God's new

  1127. and better

  1128. way of

  1129. dwelling,

  1130. of God

  1131. dwelling with

  1132. his people.

  1133. We have

  1134. unlimited

  1135. access.

  1136. In fact,

  1137. at the end

  1138. of our

  1139. Bibles,

  1140. in Revelation

    Revelation 21:22

  1141. chapter 21

  1142. verse 22,

  1143. the new

  1144. Jerusalem has

  1145. come down

  1146. and John

  1147. shows us

  1148. the same

  1149. writer of

  1150. Revelation

  1151. wrote this

  1152. gospel and

  1153. he shows us,

  1154. hey, hey,

  1155. by the way,

  1156. there's no

  1157. temple because

  1158. God is

  1159. there.

  1160. God,

  1161. our dwelling

  1162. place with

  1163. us.

  1164. So let's

  1165. apply this.

  1166. God,

  1167. so what?

  1168. What difference

  1169. does this

  1170. make?

  1171. Well, we

  1172. have a whole

  1173. new way of

  1174. worshiping.

  1175. Well, let me

  1176. just point to

  1177. three things

  1178. from this

  1179. passage that

  1180. may press

  1181. this truth

  1182. home.

  1183. Jesus has

  1184. x-ray

  1185. knowledge,

  1186. and he has

  1187. x-ray

  1188. knowledge of

  1189. your heart.

  1190. we saw

  1191. in verse 25

  1192. for he

  1193. himself

  1194. knows,

  1195. knew what

  1196. was in

  1197. man.

  1198. He knows

  1199. the inner

  1200. workings of

  1201. our hearts.

  1202. There's

  1203. nothing we

  1204. can hide

  1205. from him.

  1206. That was the

  1207. case in the

  1208. first century,

  1209. and it's the

  1210. case now in

  1211. the 21st

  1212. century.

  1213. He sees

  1214. all.

  1215. We see from

  1216. the book of

  1217. Revelation,

  1218. he has fire

  1219. eyes.

  1220. Jesus is

  1221. alive,

  1222. because he's

  1223. risen from

  1224. the dead,

  1225. he sees

  1226. all now.

  1227. He sees

  1228. you,

  1229. he sees

  1230. all of

  1231. you.

  1232. He even

  1233. sees what

  1234. you can't

  1235. see or

  1236. you don't

  1237. want to

  1238. see.

  1239. He sees

  1240. it all.

  1241. He sees

  1242. your heart.

  1243. And the

  1244. Bible,

  1245. time and

  1246. again,

  1247. describes the

  1248. heart as

  1249. the control

  1250. center of

  1251. your life.

  1252. And what

  1253. controls your

  1254. heart controls

  1255. your life.

  1256. You worship

  1257. from your

  1258. heart.

  1259. You worship

  1260. what you

  1261. treasure.

  1262. Does it

  1263. make any

  1264. difference to

  1265. you that

  1266. right now

  1267. you are

  1268. being watched

  1269. coram

  1270. deo,

  1271. before the

  1272. face of

  1273. God?

  1274. He has a

  1275. clear line of

  1276. sight into

  1277. you.

  1278. Does that

  1279. make any

  1280. difference to

  1281. you?

  1282. It should.

  1283. He knows

  1284. the depth

  1285. of your

  1286. sin.

  1287. But here's

  1288. the good

  1289. news.

  1290. He loves

  1291. you still.

  1292. He sees

  1293. you as

  1294. you are

  1295. and He

  1296. loves you

  1297. still.

  1298. So if

  1299. you're not

  1300. a Christian

  1301. in the

  1302. room,

  1303. He sees

  1304. your sin

  1305. and He's

  1306. done something

  1307. about it.

  1308. He gave

  1309. His life.

  1310. His temple

  1311. was destroyed

  1312. and He

  1313. raised it up

  1314. three days

  1315. later in

  1316. order for

  1317. you to

  1318. have all

  1319. of your

  1320. sins

  1321. forgiven

  1322. and to

  1323. come into

  1324. a relationship

  1325. with Him.

  1326. And if

  1327. you're a

  1328. Christian in

  1329. the room,

  1330. it's really

  1331. good news.

  1332. He loves

  1333. you.

  1334. He still

  1335. sees the

  1336. sin in

  1337. your heart.

  1338. He loves

  1339. you and

  1340. He wants

  1341. to do

  1342. something

  1343. about it.

  1344. He wants

  1345. to purify

  1346. your heart.

  1347. He wants

  1348. to make

  1349. you clean,

  1350. make you

  1351. holy because

  1352. He loves

  1353. you.

  1354. people.

  1355. So this

  1356. x-ray

  1357. knowledge of

  1358. Jesus,

  1359. it is as

  1360. true today

  1361. as it was

  1362. two millennia

  1363. ago.

  1364. The second

  1365. thing I want

  1366. you to

  1367. note is

  1368. not only

  1369. does Jesus

  1370. know your

  1371. heart,

  1372. x-ray

  1373. vision,

  1374. Jesus is

  1375. jealous for

  1376. your heart.

  1377. He's jealous

  1378. for what you

  1379. worship.

  1380. Just as

  1381. He found

  1382. when He

  1383. found

  1384. this

  1385. house of

  1386. God being

  1387. made into

  1388. a house

  1389. of trade

  1390. and He

  1391. was provoked

  1392. and cleansed

  1393. it.

  1394. He wants

  1395. to do the

  1396. same in

  1397. us because

  1398. He loves

  1399. us.

  1400. He wants

  1401. us to

  1402. share in

  1403. God's

  1404. holiness.

  1405. His

  1406. jealousy

  1407. seeks to

  1408. drive out

  1409. of your

  1410. heart and

  1411. life anything

  1412. that is

  1413. competing for

  1414. the worship

  1415. of God.

  1416. He wants

  1417. to release

  1418. you from

  1419. that.

  1420. And if

  1421. He's willing

  1422. to make

  1423. a whip,

  1424. and if

  1425. that's any

  1426. indicator,

  1427. He is

  1428. willing to

  1429. use discomfort,

  1430. pain,

  1431. to be stern,

  1432. even to be

  1433. angry from

  1434. time to

  1435. time,

  1436. out of

  1437. love,

  1438. in order

  1439. to rid

  1440. us of

  1441. the sin

  1442. that holds

  1443. us captive

  1444. so easily.

  1445. He's jealous

  1446. for your

  1447. heart's

  1448. worship.

  1449. He wants

  1450. you to

  1451. worship God.

  1452. In God's

  1453. plan of

  1454. salvation,

  1455. God is

  1456. gathering

  1457. worshipers

  1458. for Himself

  1459. from all

  1460. the peoples

  1461. of the

  1462. world,

  1463. a new

  1464. people.

  1465. It's called

  1466. the church

  1467. who were

  1468. once dead

  1469. living in

  1470. darkness,

  1471. and then

  1472. by God's

  1473. grace,

  1474. through the

  1475. blood of

  1476. Jesus,

  1477. He makes

  1478. them alive

  1479. to live

  1480. in the

  1481. light.

  1482. And so

  1483. when He

  1484. does that,

  1485. He is

  1486. seeking to

  1487. make us

  1488. holy as

  1489. He is

  1490. holy in

  1491. a far

  1492. better way.

  1493. He changes

  1494. our hearts.

  1495. Christ.

  1496. So if

  1497. you're a

  1498. non-Christian

  1499. in the

  1500. room,

  1501. Jesus

  1502. doesn't

  1503. want just

  1504. part of

  1505. you.

  1506. He died

  1507. and was

  1508. raised for

  1509. all of

  1510. you.

  1511. That all

  1512. of you

  1513. would love

  1514. the Lord

  1515. your God

  1516. with all

  1517. of your

  1518. heart and

  1519. all of

  1520. your strength

  1521. and all

  1522. of your

  1523. might.

  1524. So if

  1525. you're a

  1526. non-Christian

  1527. thinking about

  1528. becoming a

  1529. Christian,

  1530. realize to

  1531. commit to

  1532. Jesus to

  1533. put all

  1534. your chips

  1535. in means

  1536. it's all

  1537. in.

  1538. You are

  1539. now going

  1540. to be

  1541. transformed

  1542. into a

  1543. living

  1544. sacrifice

  1545. for God.

  1546. And if

  1547. you're a

  1548. Christian,

  1549. can I

  1550. just urge

  1551. you,

  1552. would you

  1553. please stop

  1554. putting limits

  1555. on what

  1556. Jesus can

  1557. claim in

  1558. your life?

  1559. Stop

  1560. putting limits

  1561. on Him.

  1562. give Him

  1563. full

  1564. reign.

  1565. Give Him

  1566. full

  1567. reign.

  1568. Make us

  1569. holy.

  1570. The third

  1571. thing I want

  1572. you to see

  1573. is that

  1574. Jesus died

  1575. and was

  1576. raised to

  1577. purify your

  1578. heart,

  1579. to cleanse

  1580. your heart.

  1581. The pain

  1582. and the

  1583. violence

  1584. and the

  1585. anger

  1586. for your

  1587. sin that's

  1588. provoked

  1589. in God,

  1590. it was

  1591. poured out

  1592. in full

  1593. on Christ

  1594. on the

  1595. cross.

  1596. And so

  1597. when you

  1598. believe

  1599. in what

  1600. Jesus has

  1601. done for

  1602. you for

  1603. the very

  1604. first time,

  1605. here's how

  1606. God thinks

  1607. about it.

  1608. He thinks

  1609. about all

  1610. of your

  1611. sin placed

  1612. on Christ's

  1613. head and

  1614. all of His

  1615. wrath poured

  1616. out on

  1617. Christ so

  1618. that there's

  1619. no more

  1620. wrath.

  1621. You're

  1622. fully forgiven,

  1623. but it's

  1624. just half

  1625. of it.

  1626. The other

  1627. half is

  1628. God thinks

  1629. of Christ's

  1630. righteousness,

  1631. His holiness,

  1632. as being

  1633. credited to

  1634. you.

  1635. And now,

  1636. in His

  1637. eyes,

  1638. you are

  1639. legally

  1640. righteous

  1641. in His

  1642. sight.

  1643. That's what

  1644. God has

  1645. done for

  1646. you.

  1647. It's a

  1648. far better

  1649. way.

  1650. Jesus

  1651. died and

  1652. was raised

  1653. to make

  1654. you holy,

  1655. both legally

  1656. and

  1657. experientially.

  1658. Have

  1659. your way

  1660. with us,

  1661. O God.

  1662. It's all

  1663. by His

  1664. grace

  1665. to make

  1666. us holy.

  1667. holy.

  1668. You see,

  1669. the death

  1670. and resurrection

  1671. of God's

  1672. holy,

  1673. incarnate

  1674. temple

  1675. is what

  1676. makes us

  1677. holy.

  1678. You can't

  1679. make yourself

  1680. holy.

  1681. Only a

  1682. holy God

  1683. can.

  1684. And so,

  1685. when you

  1686. become a

  1687. Christian,

  1688. you become

  1689. part of

  1690. God's new

  1691. holy temple.

  1692. Christian,

  1693. you are

  1694. part of

  1695. God's

  1696. holy temple

  1697. now.

  1698. You are

  1699. so identified

  1700. with Christ

  1701. that you

  1702. that the

  1703. New Testament

  1704. will start

  1705. talking about

  1706. you as

  1707. being a

  1708. living stone

  1709. in God's

  1710. new temple,

  1711. Jesus,

  1712. indwelt by

  1713. the Holy

  1714. Spirit.

  1715. It's

  1716. extraordinary.

  1717. So,

  1718. we apply it

  1719. knowing that

  1720. Jesus has

  1721. x-ray knowledge

  1722. of our hearts

  1723. because He

  1724. loves us,

  1725. that He

  1726. has this

  1727. loving

  1728. jealousy for

  1729. our hearts

  1730. that we

  1731. would worship

  1732. God alone

  1733. with all

  1734. that we

  1735. are,

  1736. and that

  1737. Jesus,

  1738. His death

  1739. and His

  1740. resurrection

  1741. is what

  1742. accomplishes

  1743. our holiness

  1744. of heart.

  1745. It's all

  1746. by His

  1747. love.

  1748. John 2,

  1749. 13-25,

  1750. Jesus drops

  1751. a theological

  1752. bombshell.

  1753. And for

  1754. the Jews

  1755. of His

  1756. day,

  1757. this cleansing

  1758. of the

  1759. temple was

  1760. just a

  1761. preview of

  1762. what would

  1763. happen in

  1764. 40 years to

  1765. Herod's

  1766. temple.

  1767. It would be

  1768. raised and

  1769. burned because

  1770. of ultimately

  1771. their unbelief.

  1772. But for us

  1773. and the rest of

  1774. the world,

  1775. this bombshell is

  1776. good news.

  1777. Jesus is God's

  1778. new way of

  1779. dwelling with

  1780. us, a new

  1781. and better way

  1782. to worship.

  1783. He changes

  1784. our very hearts.

  1785. So now we

  1786. gather together

  1787. and we gather

  1788. together with

  1789. joy.

  1790. I mean, this is

  1791. a magnificent

  1792. building in one

  1793. sense, but this

  1794. is not the

  1795. temple of God.

  1796. Jesus is the

  1797. temple of God

  1798. and we have

  1799. been made a

  1800. part of Him.

  1801. So now we're

  1802. holy as He is

  1803. holy.

  1804. Let's pray

  1805. together.

  1806. God, thank

  1807. you so much

  1808. for Jesus.

  1809. Thank you

  1810. that we are

  1811. now a part

  1812. of something

  1813. new and

  1814. better and

  1815. there's no

  1816. going back.

  1817. Jesus, thank

  1818. you so much

  1819. for willingly

  1820. dying in our

  1821. place and

  1822. being raised

  1823. three days

  1824. later and

  1825. that you are

  1826. alive today.

  1827. We welcome,

  1828. we welcome

  1829. your x-ray

  1830. knowledge into

  1831. our hearts.

  1832. We welcome

  1833. your loving,

  1834. jealous work of

  1835. purifying us.

  1836. We delight in

  1837. that we stand

  1838. on the ground

  1839. of being

  1840. forgiven with

  1841. confidence

  1842. because of

  1843. your finished

  1844. work.

  1845. In your name

  1846. we pray,

  1847. amen.

  1848. Amen.
