  1. If you would open up your Bibles to John chapter 3, we're going to be looking at John 3, 1-15. I'll read it in just a second.

    John 3 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 1055 of your pew Bible.

  3. Hear the word of the Lord.

  4. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

  5. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  6. Jesus answered him, truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  7. Nicodemus said to him, how can a man be born when he is old?

  8. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  9. Jesus answered, truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water in the spirit, isn't that interesting?

  10. He cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  11. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit.

  12. Do not marvel that I say to you, you must be born again.

  13. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.

  14. So it is with everyone who is born of the spirit.

  15. Nicodemus said to him, how can these things be?

  16. Jesus answered him, are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

  17. Truly, truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen,

  18. but you, you all do not receive our testimony.

  19. If I told you all earthly things and you all did not believe me,

  20. how can you all believe if I tell you heavenly things?

  21. No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

  22. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

  23. that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

  24. May God bless the hearing of his word.

  25. Amen.

  26. Do you see this thing behind me on the screen?

  27. Everyone in the room who sees a number, raise your hand.

  28. Yeah, I figured.

  29. What number is it?

  30. Now, everyone who cannot see the number seven, raise your hand.

  31. We are the few.

  32. The anomalies.

  33. We are the colorblind.

  34. We have this thing in our eyes.

  35. It's an anatomical defect of cones.

  36. We can't discern green from reds or have a hard time doing that at least.

  37. But there's another kind of blindness.

  38. You can take that down.

  39. It's called spiritual blindness.

  40. By the way, I didn't even know what the number was until our dear sister Robin Town told me,

  41. hey, when do you want me to put up the number seven?

  42. I'm like, number seven?

  43. You mean the colorblind test?

  44. Yeah.

  45. There's another kind of blindness.

  46. There's another kind of blindness.

  47. It's spiritual blindness.

  48. And it's not the result of some anatomical defect in us.

  49. It's a result of spiritual deadness.

  50. We are born spiritually blind because we're born spiritually dead.

  51. And the spiritually dead are unable to see the salvation that God has provided in Jesus Christ, the Son of Man.

  52. So this morning, God has a lesson for us.

  53. And it comes from a conversation between this man named Nicodemus, who was a religious leader in Jesus.

  54. The thing is, this highly respected and influential religious leader who knew his Old Testament inside and out.

  55. The thing is, he's in the dark.

  56. He is spiritually blind.

  57. And Jesus tells him the only cure for that spiritual blindness, you must be born again.

  58. This dialogue that we're going to see between Nicodemus and Jesus, it unfolds in three exchanges.

  59. And it's kind of like watching a tennis match.

  60. Any tennis fans?

  61. Didn't think so?

  62. Each exchange begins with Nicodemus serving up a statement or a question.

  63. And then Jesus returns volley with a truly, truly.

  64. I'm going to walk us through the conversation, then summarize the lesson that God has for us.

  65. And then I'm going to apply it to the non-Christians in the room and to the Christians in the room.

  66. Because to be born again is to make a huge difference in our lives.

  67. So now let's look at the first exchange in this dialogue between Nicodemus and Jesus.

  68. And it's in verses 1 through 3.

  69. So John chapter 3, verses 1 through 3.

    John 3:1–3

  70. And in verses 1 and 2, John introduces us to this man named Nicodemus.

  71. And we learn he's a Pharisee.

  72. Now a Pharisee was a certain kind of theological school of thought within Judaism at that time.

  73. The apostle Paul was a Pharisee.

  74. And Nicodemus was a Pharisee.

  75. And he was also a ruler of the Jews.

  76. Did you see that in verse 1?

  77. Which means he was a member of the Jewish ruling council, the Sanhedrin,

  78. which was a highly esteemed position with a lot of responsibility and influence.

  79. So this was a well-educated, accomplished, respected, influential guy.

  80. This guy named Nicodemus.

  81. And in verse 2, he comes to Jesus at night, which is interesting.

  82. So John includes that detail for a reason.

  83. Likely two reasons.

  84. Nicodemus didn't want to be seen meeting with Jesus.

  85. He doesn't want to give people the wrong impressions because Jesus is already making some waves.

  86. But Nicodemus wants to know what's going on with this guy.

  87. Secondly, and more symbolically, John includes this detail because Nicodemus is in the dark.

  88. He's living in spiritual night.

  89. And we're going to see that unfold as this dialogue continues.

  90. So in verse 2, Nicodemus serves up the start of the conversation.

  91. Nicodemus is aware of the signs that Jesus has performed.

  92. Rabbi, which is a way to respect Jesus.

  93. Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God.

  94. For no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  95. So Nicodemus was aware of signs that Jesus was doing.

  96. And we know from the end of the Gospel of John that John doesn't include all the signs that Jesus does.

  97. He says, if I were to conclude that there's not enough books to contain what Jesus has done.

  98. So Nicodemus is aware of signs that Jesus has done that John doesn't record.

  99. But all of these signs were intended to reveal who Jesus was.

  100. So we can conclude this, that Nicodemus sees something unique about Jesus.

  101. I mean, look what he says.

  102. He says, Rabbi, we know that you're a teacher come from God.

  103. That's unique.

  104. And then he goes on to say, and then you do these signs that no one can do unless God is with him.

  105. From God, God is with him.

  106. God is with you, Nicodemus starts.

  107. Now, this is a great way to start a conversation.

  108. Oh, Jesus, I see God's hand on you.

  109. But it's interesting what Nicodemus isn't saying.

  110. He's not saying, Jesus, you are the Christ, the Messiah.

  111. He doesn't see that Jesus is God in the flesh.

  112. He sees Jesus as God with him, not God is him.

  113. And so what we're already getting to see is that Nicodemus has some sense that Jesus is unique,

  114. but he doesn't see Jesus for who he truly is.

  115. He's in the dark.

  116. So in verse 3, we see Jesus return volley to Nicodemus' greeting.

  117. And in verse 3, it's almost like, did Jesus just hear what he said?

  118. Look what he says.

  119. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  120. That just doesn't seem to match.

  121. I see God's hand on you.

  122. And Jesus is like, truly, truly, unless you're born again, you can't see the kingdom of God.

  123. What is going on there?

  124. Well, that little phrase, truly, truly, that shows up 25 times in the Gospel of John.

  125. And here's what that does.

  126. It's Jesus exercising his authority and bringing clarity to something.

  127. It's how Jesus introduces a definitive statement.

  128. It's like Jesus saying, okay, let the Son of Man just be clear on this.

  129. Truly, truly, I say to you.

  130. That's what's going on.

  131. And in this passage, what makes this passage interesting is that there are three truly,

  132. trulies in it.

  133. He is repeatedly clarifying things for this highly esteemed teacher of Israel who's in the dark.

  134. Unless one is born again.

  135. Let me just be clear.

  136. Unless one is born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God.

  137. When he says, unless one is born again, Jesus is referring to some kind of second birth,

  138. some kind of spiritual event that he does not elaborate on here, but it qualifies something.

  139. You've got to be spiritually born again in order to see the kingdom of God.

  140. What is this kingdom of God?

  141. And why do you need to be born again to see it?

  142. Well, the kingdom of God is not this kind of geographic kingdom with boundaries.

  143. The kingdom of God is a reign of God that transcends all geographies, borders, and governments.

  144. In fact, if you want to, I want to give you a taste of the kingdom of God, what it is,

  145. by pointing you back to the book of Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  146. Would you go back in your Bibles to Daniel chapter 7, verse 14?

    Daniel 7:14

  147. It's on page 884 of your pew Bible.

  148. Now, this was a vision given to Daniel, who was a prophet.

  149. And as you're turning there, what we're going to see is that there is a particular kind of kingdom

  150. that the ancient of days, God the Father, is going to give the Son of Man.

  151. I'll start in verse 13.

  152. I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven, there came one like a Son of Man.

  153. Mark that.

  154. And he came to the ancient of days, God the Father, and was presented before him.

  155. And to him, the Son of Man was given dominion, rule, authority, and glory, and a kingdom

  156. that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him, the Son of Man.

  157. His dominion, the Son of Man's dominion, is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away.

  158. And his kingdom, the Son of Man's kingdom, one that shall not be destroyed.

  159. And so what we're told here is that this kingdom of God is a God kingdom that is everlasting and is indestructible.

  160. And the Son of Man has something to do with it.

  161. And what we're being told Jesus is saying here is you can't see that kingdom without being born again.

  162. Before you enter this kingdom, you're a rebel against God and you're dead in your sins.

  163. But when you enter this kingdom, you are made spiritually alive and you are a child of God forevermore.

  164. So how does Jesus' response to Nicodemus make sense?

  165. The only way that it makes sense is when you realize that Nicodemus is in the dark.

  166. Jesus is explaining something to him that he doesn't get.

  167. So here is the spiritually blind Nicodemus looking at Jesus, thinking that he's from God, that God is with him, when it's actually God is him.

  168. So Jesus' response is more like,

  169. Hey, Nicodemus, you do not know who you are talking to.

  170. Because if you were born again, you would see the king of the kingdom standing in front of you.

  171. God with us.

  172. This is the first volley.

  173. Nicodemus serves.

  174. Jesus returns.

  175. Point Jesus.

  176. Second volley.

  177. Verses 4 through 8.

  178. It's pretty safe to say that Nicodemus was not expecting Jesus to return volley that way.

  179. He wasn't expecting Jesus to respond to his greeting and his kind, generous greeting like that.

  180. Because here is this accomplished, seasoned, influential, Bible teacher who sought after in Israel.

  181. And Jesus is implying that Nicodemus can't see the kingdom of God.

  182. That he's got to be born again.

  183. It's like Jesus is saying,

  184. You can't see the kingdom of God when he's staring at you in the face.

  185. Yes.

  186. So in verse 4, Nicodemus serves up his next serve with a question.

  187. Verse 4.

  188. How can a man be born when he is old?

  189. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb?

  190. Now, if you were inside Nicodemus' head,

  191. and you were able to like see what he was thinking on a screen inside of his head,

  192. do you know what it would say?

  193. It would be this alarm.

  194. Err.

  195. Err.

  196. Err.

  197. Does not compute.

  198. Err.

  199. Err.

  200. Err.

  201. He hears what Jesus says about being born again,

  202. and it does not compute.

  203. So he is like all people living in darkness,

  204. tries to make sense of it in a humanistic way.

  205. So he goes to biology.

  206. Literally anatomical.

  207. He's like, wait, I'm like, you know, 54.

  208. How can I be born again?

  209. What are you talking about?

  210. How can I get back into my mother's womb?

  211. He's not getting it.

  212. He thinks born again means something anatomical,

  213. something literal.

  214. He doesn't get what Jesus is saying.

  215. He's spiritually blind.

  216. He's in the dark.

  217. Maybe you are in the dark.

  218. You hear people talk about Jesus,

  219. and you're like, I don't know what the big deal is.

  220. What's the big deal?

  221. Or this Jesus guy is a major crutch for these weakling Christians.

  222. In verse 5 through 8, Jesus responds,

  223. returns volley with a second truly, truly.

  224. Let me just read you what he says in its entirety through verse 8.

  225. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  226. unless one is born of water in the Spirit,

  227. he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  228. That which is born of the flesh is flesh,

  229. and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit.

  230. Do not marvel that I say to you,

  231. you must be born again.

  232. The wind blows where it wishes,

  233. and you hear its sound,

  234. but you do not know where it comes from

  235. or where it's going.

  236. So it is with everyone who's born of the Spirit.

  237. So Jesus returns volley with an explanation

  238. of what it means to be born again.

  239. It's going to be very helpful for us

  240. to understand what Jesus is saying.

  241. So let's unpack this a little bit.

  242. First thing I want you to note

  243. is that Jesus is kind of raising the bar a little bit.

  244. He's talking about moving from seeing the kingdom of God

  245. to now entering the kingdom of God,

  246. which has to do with your will.

  247. To enter the kingdom of God

  248. means you must decide to enter the kingdom of God.

  249. And he says you must be born of water in the Spirit.

  250. In other words,

  251. if you're not born of water in the Spirit,

  252. whatever that means,

  253. you cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  254. You cannot come under God's saving reign.

  255. You cannot experience the eternal life

  256. that is in Christ alone.

  257. You've got to be born again.

  258. If you want to experience God's salvation

  259. that is in Christ Jesus,

  260. you must be born again.

  261. Otherwise, you remain in a state of spiritual death,

  262. spiritual blindness,

  263. and under God's wrath for all of your sin.

  264. So what does it mean to be born of water

  265. in the Spirit?

  266. Well, there's been a number of explanations,

  267. and I'm guessing many of you in the room

  268. have heard some of these.

  269. Some people think,

  270. some Christians think that water

  271. is a reference to baptism,

  272. and the Spirit is Spirit rebirth, regeneration.

  273. Other people interpret this,

  274. this water in Spirit,

  275. as your physical birth.

  276. You must be born of water,

  277. the water that you,

  278. your mom's womb,

  279. the water broke,

  280. that water,

  281. and the Spirit.

  282. But I've been convinced

  283. by what Dr. D.A. Carson

  284. makes a very convincing case.

  285. Have you ever experienced in your Bible

  286. where you're reading something,

  287. and you're like,

  288. I do not know what he's saying here?

  289. One of the best things that you can do

  290. at that point is ask,

  291. hey, is this making a reference

  292. to something back in the Old Testament?

  293. Because that's what's going on here.

  294. Jesus is very intentionally

  295. using water in Spirit

  296. for a reason,

  297. a reason that Nicodemus

  298. should get.

  299. what Jesus is doing

  300. is referring back

  301. to a passage in Ezekiel,

    Ezekiel 36:24–27

  302. chapter 36,

  303. verses 24 through 27.

  304. I want you to turn there with me.

  305. That's on page 860

  306. of your pew Bible,

  307. Ezekiel 36, 24 through 27.

  308. And as you're turning there,

  309. I just want to let you know,

  310. this is Ezekiel's version

  311. of a new covenant prophecy.

  312. It's like Jeremiah 31

  313. where Jeremiah spells out

  314. the new covenant.

  315. that's coming.

  316. Here,

  317. we see Ezekiel

  318. kind of alluding,

  319. prophesying to what will come

  320. with the new covenant.

  321. In other words,

  322. this water in Spirit

  323. is rich

  324. with theological freight.

  325. So let me just read for you

  326. chapter 36,

  327. verses 24 through 27.

  328. Remember,

  329. we're talking about water

  330. and Spirit.

  331. Let's see if you can see it

  332. in the passage.

  333. I will take you,

  334. this is God speaking,

  335. I will take you from the nations

  336. and gather you from all the countries

  337. and bring you into your own land.

  338. I will sprinkle clean water on you

  339. and you shall be clean

  340. from all your uncleanlinesses.

  341. And from all your idols,

  342. I will cleanse you

  343. and I will give you a new heart

  344. and a new spirit

  345. I will put within you

  346. and I will remove your heart

  347. of stone from you,

  348. remove your heart of stone

  349. from your flesh

  350. and give you a heart of flesh

  351. and I will put my Spirit within you

  352. and cause you to walk in my statutes

  353. and be careful to obey my rules.

  354. Did you see it in verse 25?

  355. There's a reference to water

  356. that cleanses from our sin.

  357. Did you see in verse 26

  358. this reference to a new heart,

  359. a new spirit

  360. where God takes the old heart

  361. that is hard towards Him

  362. and He does this spiritual cardiac surgery

  363. and replaces it with a new heart,

  364. a new spirit

  365. that now has new affections.

  366. What God is showing us here

  367. is that this is a prophecy fulfilled

  368. that Jesus is talking about.

  369. That this being born again

  370. by the Spirit, verse 8,

  371. is the coming of the new covenant.

  372. And we see in verse 27

  373. that the Spirit comes to indwell us,

  374. to cause us to obey.

  375. We want to obey now.

  376. And there's no coincidence

  377. that the Valley of Dry Bones,

  378. chapter 37,

  379. follows this.

  380. Resurrection.

  381. This is what it means

  382. to be born again.

  383. To be made a new creation.

  384. The old has gone.

  385. If anyone is in Christ,

  386. he's a new creation.

  387. The old is gone.

  388. The new is come.

  389. It's a distinct and unique work

  390. of the Holy Spirit.

  391. Only the Holy Spirit

  392. can take someone

  393. who's spiritually dead

  394. and make them spiritually alive,

  395. applying the finished work

  396. of Christ to them.

  397. In verse 6,

  398. we see this distinction

  399. of those who are born

  400. of the flesh are flesh.

  401. That which is born

  402. of the Spirit is spirit.

  403. There are two types

  404. of people on the planet.

  405. Those who are born

  406. of the flesh

  407. and are spiritually dead.

  408. And those who are born

  409. of the flesh

  410. and also born

  411. of the Spirit,

  412. second birth,

  413. who have been cleansed

  414. from their sin

  415. and made alive to God

  416. and are children of His

  417. through Christ's finished work.

  418. What we're seeing here

  419. is Jesus saying,

  420. with me comes the age

  421. of the Spirit.

  422. The age of the Spirit

  423. that comes with the new covenant.

  424. And it's set into motion

  425. by the death

  426. and resurrection of Jesus.

  427. In verses 7 and 8,

  428. we read,

  429. He says to Nicodemus,

  430. Nicodemus,

  431. do not marvel

  432. what I said to you.

  433. You must be born again.

  434. Nicodemus,

  435. you've got Ezekiel 36 memorized.

  436. You shouldn't marvel

  437. what I'm telling you here.

  438. And then he compares

  439. this activity

  440. of the Holy Spirit

  441. to the wind blowing.

  442. The wind blows

  443. where it wishes

  444. and you hear it sound.

  445. You can't see the wind,

  446. but you see the effects

  447. of the wind.

  448. But you do not

  449. where it comes from

  450. or where it goes.

  451. You hear its sound.

  452. You see it blowing the leaves.

  453. The leaves rustling,

  454. but you actually

  455. don't see the wind.

  456. You see clouds moving.

  457. And Jesus says,

  458. so it is with everyone

  459. who's born of the Spirit.

  460. You can't see the Holy Spirit,

  461. but you see the effects

  462. of the Holy Spirit

  463. in the life of those

  464. who are spiritually dead.

  465. Let me tell you some of them.

  466. When someone starts

  467. to become aware

  468. that,

  469. that they are doing wrong,

  470. this is John 16, 8.

  471. Jesus said,

  472. the Spirit will come

  473. and when He comes,

  474. He will convict the world

  475. of sin, righteousness,

  476. and judgment.

  477. And so,

  478. when someone is not,

  479. is recognizing

  480. that they're doing wrong,

  481. but they recognize

  482. that they're wrong

  483. is against God.

  484. Not just against

  485. other human beings,

  486. but against God.

  487. That when I sin,

  488. when I do something

  489. that's wrong,

  490. it's grievous

  491. in God's sight.

  492. When you start,

  493. when that starts registering,

  494. I think there's a work

  495. of the Spirit going on.

  496. Or,

  497. when someone recognizes

  498. how sinful they are,

  499. and they're like,

  500. I cannot do anything

  501. about this wicked heart.

  502. I am so sinful.

  503. I,

  504. in God's eyes,

  505. I must be condemned.

  506. There's nothing

  507. that I can do

  508. to dig myself out of this.

  509. Nothing I can do.

  510. I need some kind

  511. of forgiveness.

  512. I need some kind

  513. of new work in me.

  514. That inclination

  515. is something

  516. that you don't

  517. generate yourself.

  518. God's Spirit

  519. grants repentance.

  520. When you start recognizing

  521. your sinfulness

  522. against God,

  523. and you're like,

  524. oh,

  525. that must grieve you.

  526. I want to turn

  527. from that,

  528. and God,

  529. through His Spirit,

  530. gives you eyes

  531. to see Jesus.

  532. Remember,

  533. John 16,

  534. 14,

  535. Jesus speaks about

  536. the primary ministry

  537. of the Spirit

  538. in terms of this.

  539. He will glorify me.

  540. And so,

  541. one of the things

  542. that the Holy Spirit

  543. will do is,

  544. He will convict

  545. of sin against God,

  546. and then He will set

  547. your gaze

  548. upon Jesus

  549. in His finished work

  550. on the cross

  551. so that you can be saved,

  552. so you can believe

  553. in Him.

  554. All of these things

  555. are from the Spirit.

  556. So,

  557. we have the second

  558. serve and return

  559. where Jesus unpacks

  560. what it means

  561. to be born again,

  562. point Jesus.

  563. He's saying,

  564. hey,

  565. this is Ezekiel 36

  566. being carried out

  567. in front of you.

  568. The new covenant,

  569. this great salvation.

  570. The Spirit does

  571. what He wills.

  572. During the summertime,

  573. oftentimes,

  574. we see news clips

  575. of tornadoes

  576. that are ripping

  577. through towns

  578. in Nebraska,

  579. in Oklahoma,

  580. and even Wisconsin,

  581. and they leave

  582. this trail

  583. of destruction

  584. and death.

  585. It is a windstorm

  586. out of control.

  587. Destruction,

  588. death.

  589. The Holy Spirit

  590. leaves His own path,

  591. not of destruction

  592. and death.

  593. new life,

  594. recreation,

  595. children of God.

  596. The Holy Spirit

  597. is a person,

  598. He's at work,

  599. He's moving,

  600. and He brings

  601. new life.

  602. Exchange number three.

  603. verses nine through 15.

  604. In verse nine,

  605. Nicodemus serves up

  606. his last question.

  607. How can these things be?

  608. How is this possible?

  609. It appears as though

  610. Nicodemus is having

  611. his world rocked.

  612. Are his lights going on?

  613. In verse 10,

  614. Jesus starts

  615. His return

  616. with a bit of a rebuke.

  617. Are you the teacher

  618. of Israel

  619. and yet

  620. you do not understand

  621. these things?

  622. Do you not know

  623. your Bible?

  624. Nicodemus,

  625. this is clear.

  626. This has been made aware.

  627. This has been

  628. in your hands.

  629. You have read this

  630. over and over again.

  631. you've just not

  632. had eyes to see.

  633. In a very subtle way,

  634. Jesus is actually

  635. claiming to be

  636. the true teacher

  637. of Israel.

  638. And then we see

  639. in verse 11,

  640. the last of these three

  641. truly, truly,

  642. I say to you's,

  643. truly, truly,

  644. I say to you,

  645. we speak of what we,

  646. this is Jesus speaking,

  647. truly, truly,

  648. I say to you,

  649. we speak of what we know

  650. and bear witness

  651. to what we have seen,

  652. but you,

  653. which is literally

  654. you all,

  655. do not receive

  656. our testimony.

  657. This is really interesting.

  658. Who,

  659. who's the we?

  660. Who's the our?

  661. I mean,

  662. could Jesus be talking

  663. about His disciples?

  664. No,

  665. because a lot of them

  666. really don't get it

  667. at this point either.

  668. Is Jesus somehow

  669. talking about Nicodemus

  670. just kind of being friendly

  671. like Nicodemus was him

  672. when He greeted him?

  673. No,

  674. because when you see

  675. at the end,

  676. but you all do not receive

  677. our testimony,

  678. it kind of defeats

  679. that line of thinking.

  680. So who could this we be?

  681. And grammatically speaking,

  682. from the text,

  683. you know what you do?

  684. You go back

  685. to the last reference

  686. of a person.

  687. And do you know who it is?

  688. The Holy Spirit.

  689. Could this we be

  690. Jesus referring to

  691. the Holy Spirit

  692. in His ministry

  693. under the new covenant

  694. to bring about salvation?

  695. What a we.

  696. Jesus and the Holy Spirit

  697. speaking of what we know

  698. and bear witness

  699. to what we've seen?

  700. They know because they're God.

  701. They've seen heaven.

  702. But you do not receive

  703. our testimony.

  704. This harkens back to John 1.

  705. Where Jesus came to His own

  706. and His own did not receive Him.

  707. They don't have eyes to see,

  708. hearts to believe.

  709. It's further evidence

  710. of the spiritual blindness

  711. that we see in Nicodemus.

  712. But I just want to let you know,

  713. there's a rest of the story

  714. with Nicodemus.

  715. In chapter 7,

  716. verse 15 and 51,

  717. the other Jews of the Sanhedrin,

  718. they're starting to attack Jesus.

  719. In that sequence,

  720. Nicodemus seeks to defend Him.

  721. And then at the very end

  722. of the Gospel of John

  723. in chapter 19,

  724. we see Nicodemus present

  725. at the death of Jesus

  726. and at His burial.

  727. Helping His body

  728. to be received and buried.

  729. That kind of willingness

  730. to be identified with Jesus

  731. at great cost

  732. at that point,

  733. I think it's likely

  734. that Nicodemus,

  735. at this point,

  736. at the end of John,

  737. the lights have gone on.

  738. He had moved from death to life

  739. and he had seen

  740. and entered the kingdom

  741. of God,

  742. the saving reign of God.

  743. In verse 12,

  744. we read,

  745. Jesus says,

  746. I have told you earthly things

  747. and you did not believe.

  748. How can you believe

  749. if I tell you

  750. heavenly things?

  751. It's like,

  752. I've been telling you

  753. what it means

  754. for Ezekiel 36

  755. to be fulfilled here

  756. on earth right now

  757. and how you can enter

  758. the kingdom of God right now.

  759. How,

  760. if you don't believe that,

  761. you're not going to believe

  762. what I've got to tell you

  763. about heavenly things

  764. which I have seen firsthand.

  765. Again,

  766. Jesus is speaking

  767. of spiritual blindness.

  768. You must be born again,

  769. Nicodemus.

  770. In verse 13,

  771. Jesus further elaborates

  772. on what he's seen.

  773. No one has ascended

  774. into heaven

  775. except he who descended

  776. from heaven,

  777. the Son of Man.

  778. what Jesus is saying here

  779. is

  780. no one has had

  781. an eyewitness view

  782. of heaven

  783. except me

  784. because

  785. I am from heaven.

  786. He has eternally existed

  787. as a second person

  788. of the Trinity

  789. and he has eternally existed

  790. with God the Father

  791. and God the Spirit

  792. in heaven together

  793. and he left heaven

  794. and took on flesh

  795. and walked this planet.

  796. He has seen heaven

  797. firsthand

  798. is what he's saying

  799. and then he drops

  800. the title,

  801. the Son of Man.

  802. No one has ascended

  803. into heaven

  804. except he descended

  805. from heaven,

  806. the Son of Man.

  807. This is a title

  808. that Jesus uses

  809. exclusively

  810. for himself

  811. and it is

  812. a big claim

  813. and that title

  814. is used

  815. in a few different places

  816. in your Bibles

  817. but if you flip back

  818. to Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  819. I just want to help you

  820. see what's going on

  821. here in this passage.

  822. Again,

  823. page 884

  824. of your Pew Bible.

  825. Jesus says

  826. or God says

  827. through Daniel,

  828. Daniel says

  829. with these night visions

  830. and behold

  831. I saw in the night visions

  832. and behold

  833. with clouds of heaven

  834. there came one

  835. like a Son of Man

  836. and he came

  837. to the ancient of days

  838. and was presented

  839. before him

  840. and to him

  841. was given dominion

  842. and glory

  843. and a kingdom

  844. that all people's nations

  845. and languages

  846. serve him,

  847. the Son of Man.

  848. His,

  849. the Son of Man's dominion

  850. is an everlasting dominion

  851. which shall not pass away

  852. and the Son of Man's kingdom

  853. one that shall

  854. not be destroyed

  855. everlasting,

  856. indestructible.

  857. This is the kingdom

  858. of God

  859. that the Son of Man

  860. brings with him

  861. when he descends

  862. from heaven.

  863. The Son of Man

  864. is given full authority

  865. over this eternal,

  866. indestructible,

  867. saving reign of God

  868. and the Son of Man

  869. has descended

  870. of heaven

  871. from heaven.

  872. He is the word

  873. became flesh

  874. that has dwelt among us.

  875. We beheld his glory.

  876. Glory is of the one

  877. and only of the Father.

  878. How can these things

  879. be,

  880. says Nicodemus,

  881. the Son of Man

  882. is standing

  883. in front of him.

  884. Ezekiel 36

  885. is fulfilled

  886. in front of him.

  887. That's how

  888. these things can be.

  889. God is being faithful

  890. to his word.

  891. Nicodemus

  892. was looking

  893. at the Son of Man.

  894. In verse 14

  895. we read,

  896. and as Moses

  897. lifted up the serpent

  898. in the wilderness,

  899. so must the Son of Man

  900. be lifted up.

  901. That serpent

  902. in the wilderness

  903. is a reference

  904. to Numbers 21.

  905. It's an account

  906. where Israel

  907. grumbles and complains

  908. against God

  909. and God

  910. disciplines them

  911. by sending fiery serpents

  912. who bite them.

  913. Many of the Israelites

  914. die.

  915. They realize

  916. they've been naughty

  917. so they cry out

  918. to God

  919. and God provides

  920. a mercy

  921. to them.

  922. He tells Moses

  923. to construct

  924. a brazen serpent,

  925. a bronze servant,

  926. and to lift it up

  927. on a pole

  928. and when Israel

  929. is bitten

  930. they are to

  931. look upon

  932. this bronze serpent

  933. and be healed

  934. to live.

  935. And Jesus is saying,

  936. you remember that?

  937. That was actually

  938. in an incredible way

  939. pointing to me.

  940. so must the Son of Man

  941. be lifted up.

  942. We've all been

  943. bitten by sin.

  944. We're all deserved

  945. death because of sin

  946. and God has sent

  947. Jesus as the Son of Man

  948. who brings this kingdom

  949. of eternal life

  950. and the way

  951. to be healed,

  952. the way to receive

  953. eternal life,

  954. to be cleansed

  955. from your sin,

  956. to be given

  957. a new spirit

  958. is to look upon

  959. the Son of Man

  960. hanging on the cross

  961. to be lifted up,

  962. to believe.

  963. And whoever believes

  964. who looks upon him

  965. with eyes of faith

  966. may have eternal life.

  967. You're born again.

  968. That life starts

  969. immediately.

  970. You enter into

  971. a relationship

  972. with God

  973. through Christ

  974. and it's the best.

  975. it's quite a response.

  976. Point Jesus.

  977. Match.

  978. Set.

  979. Game.

  980. Three exchanges.

  981. All responded

  982. by truly, truly

  983. by the Son of Man.

  984. We learn about

  985. the kingdom of God,

  986. what it means

  987. to be born of the Spirit,

  988. that Jesus is

  989. the Son of Man

  990. who's been lifted up

  991. on the cross.

  992. This is the way

  993. to be born again.

  994. You know what the lesson is?

  995. You must be born again.

  996. You must be born again.

  997. And this passage

  998. points to three realities.

  999. The depth

  1000. of our sinfulness.

  1001. Our sinfulness

  1002. is so deep

  1003. that we are

  1004. flat liners

  1005. spiritually

  1006. from the get-go.

  1007. Our sinfulness

  1008. is so deep

  1009. that we have no

  1010. God-honoring

  1011. brain activity.

  1012. We're brain dead

  1013. when we come out.

  1014. So in an

  1015. extraordinary display

  1016. of God's grace

1017. so that we could see

  1018. and enter

  1019. the kingdom of God,

  1020. He gives us

  1021. spiritual life

  1022. by the Holy Spirit.

  1023. We can't

  1024. self-start

  1025. our

  1026. spiritual life.

  1027. life.

1028. So what we see here

  1029. is apart from Christ

  1030. we are all

  1031. in the valley

  1032. of dry bones,

  1033. dead in our sins,

  1034. with only one hope

  1035. to be made alive

  1036. by God.

  1037. And so

  1038. the first thing

  1039. reality that comes

  1040. to the fore

  1041. is our utter

  1042. spiritual sinfulness.

1043. Have you come to terms

  1044. with that?

  1045. Can you see that?

  1046. The second reality

  1047. is

  1048. the glory of Christ.

  1049. The love of God

  1050. in Christ Jesus.

  1051. Behold the glory

  1052. of Jesus

  1053. who lovingly,

  1054. willingly

  1055. left heaven

  1056. to take on flesh,

1057. to live a sinless life

  1058. and was

  1059. willingly

  1060. lifted up

  1061. on the cross

  1062. to die

  1063. for our sins.

1064. He's the Lamb of God.

  1065. His death

  1066. ushered in

  1067. a new era

  1068. of salvation.

  1069. He ushered in

  1070. the kingdom

  1071. of God,

  1072. the saving reign

  1073. of God,

  1074. the age

  1075. of the Spirit.

  1076. Glory be to Him.

  1077. Your sin is worse

1078. than you can possibly imagine,

  1079. but God's grace

  1080. and His love

  1081. is beyond that still.

  1082. The third reality

  1083. is the Spirit alone

1084. is able to give us life.

  1085. The only way

  1086. to enter God's kingdom

  1087. of eternal life,

  1088. the only way

  1089. to see

  1090. and enter salvation

  1091. is you must

1092. be born of the Spirit.

1093. You must be born again.

  1094. You must be able

  1095. to see

  1096. you're so dead

  1097. that there needs

  1098. to be a work

  1099. of the Spirit

  1100. to incline

  1101. your hearts

  1102. to Christ.

  1103. So it is

  1104. with everyone

  1105. born of the Spirit.

  1106. The Spirit alone

  1107. give spiritual eyes

  1108. to the spiritually blind.

1109. You must be born again.

  1110. Are you born again?

  1111. If you're a non-Christian,

  1112. you cannot save yourself.

  1113. There's not enough

  1114. communions to take

1115. that will give you life,

  1116. the life you need.

  1117. You can't attend church

  1118. enough times

  1119. to be born again.

1120. It doesn't come that way.

1121. You can't be good enough.

  1122. You're doing good deeds

  1123. does not give you

  1124. new life.

  1125. Only God's Spirit

  1126. gives you new life.

  1127. There's a device

  1128. called F4 Opter.

  1129. And if you've been

  1130. to your optometrist,

1131. you've sat in front of it.

1132. You sit in a chair

1133. and this big metal thing

1134. comes in front of your eyes

  1135. and it's got

  1136. like thousands

  1137. of different lens options.

  1138. and your optometrist

  1139. will say,

  1140. hey, will you look

  1141. at the letters

  1142. in front of you

  1143. on the eye chart?

  1144. Big E

  1145. and then there's

  1146. smaller and smaller

  1147. lines of letters

  1148. and she will say

  1149. something like,

1150. hey, can you see that now?

  1151. And you're like,

1152. yeah, I can see that.

  1153. And then she'll do

1154. some click, click, click, clicks

  1155. and she'll be like,

  1156. is that clear

  1157. or is that clear?

  1158. And you're like,

  1159. the second one

1160. and then click, click, click, click, click.

  1161. And then she'll go

1162. down to the third line

  1163. and is that clear

  1164. or is this clear?

1165. And so what she's doing

1166. is she's testing the clarity

  1167. by what you see.

1168. Let me run through a test,

  1169. non-believer.

1170. Do you see your own sin

  1171. is against God?

  1172. Yes.

  1173. Click, click, click, click.

  1174. Let's move on.

  1175. Do you see that

  1176. you cannot save yourself?

  1177. Yes.

  1178. Good.

1179. Click, click, click, click, click.

1180. Do you see the Son of Man

1181. lifted up on the cross

  1182. died for you?

  1183. Yes.

1184. Click, click, click, click, click.

  1185. That is the work

  1186. of God's Spirit.

1187. Do you have new desires

1188. for God in your heart?

1189. A desire to please Him

  1190. and honor Him?

1191. Do you want that yes?

1192. The way to be born again

1193. is to put your trust

  1194. in Jesus Christ.

  1195. To believe on Him.

1196. And today, you can do that.

  1197. You simply say,

  1198. Jesus, I need you.

1199. Would you give me the life

1200. that's only found in you?

  1201. Amen.

  1202. Christians,

  1203. do you have

  1204. spiritual glaucoma?

  1205. It's not spiritual blindness.

  1206. It's something that's in the way

  1207. of you seeing clearly.

  1208. Maybe it's materialism.

  1209. Maybe it's your pride.

  1210. Maybe it's your lust.

1211. But what you do is ask

  1212. the Holy Spirit,

  1213. ask your Father

1214. to pour out the Holy Spirit

  1215. upon you

1216. and to revitalize your soul

1217. that you can see clearly.

  1218. There's more I can say.

1219. Those who've been born again,

  1220. they see clearly,

  1221. they are grateful,

  1222. and in evangelism,

  1223. they are dependent

  1224. on the Holy Spirit

1225. because it's the Holy Spirit

  1226. who convicts people

  1227. of their sin.

  1228. Do you remember

1229. that little color blindness test

  1230. that we started

  1231. this sermon off with?

  1232. There's no cure

  1233. for color blindness,

1234. but there is a cure

  1235. for spiritual blindness.

1236. You must be born again.

  1237. The Holy Spirit

  1238. gives eyes to see

1239. and a heart to believe

  1240. the Son of Man

  1241. lifted up for you.

1242. It changes what you see

  1243. in the Bible.

  1244. It changes from you

  1245. looking at the Bible

  1246. as page after page

  1247. of blah, blah, blah,

  1248. blah, blah, blah,

1249. to seeing page after page

1250. of the glory of God

1251. in the face of Jesus Christ,

  1252. the Son of Man

  1253. lifted up for you.

1254. You must be born again.

  1255. Let's pray.

  1256. Father, you alone

  1257. give new life

  1258. to the Spirit

1259. based upon the finished work

  1260. of Jesus,

  1261. and would you

  1262. give new life

1263. to those who are dead

  1264. in the room?

  1265. Would you, God,

1266. use our witness of Christ

  1267. for people to hear

  1268. what Christ has done

  1269. and believe?

  1270. God, we trust you

  1271. would you, God,

  1272. add to our number

  1273. through conversions

  1274. more and more

1275. who move from being dead

  1276. to being alive,

  1277. from being rebels

  1278. to being children,

1279. and for those of us

  1280. who have already been

  1281. born again, God,

  1282. would you just continue

  1283. to reveal the glory

  1284. of God

  1285. in the face

  1286. of Jesus Christ?

1287. It's your name we pray.

  1288. Amen.

  1289. Amen.

  1290. Amen.

  1291. Amen.
