  1. All right, good morning.

  2. Our children are dismissed to their classes.

  3. ! Let's open our Bibles to Deuteronomy chapter 18.

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  4. ! Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 9.

    Deuteronomy 18:9

  5. I'm thankful for the opportunity to preach this week and next week.

  6. We're going to do a little two-week miniseries on the doctrine of Scripture, on its truth and authority.

  7. This week, Deuteronomy 18. Next week, 1 Kings 13.

  8. That'll be a strange story about a false prophet and a donkey and a lion and some crazy stuff that goes on.

  9. So make sure you're back next week for that.

  10. Let's open in prayer and ask for the Lord's help.

  11. Father, as we open the book of Deuteronomy, we are aware that this is your holy word.

  12. And we need your help to understand it.

  13. And we pray that your Spirit would press upon us its truth, its relevance.

  14. I pray that you would help me to be clear and for all of us to be attentive.

  15. And we ask these things in your name. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. Everyone, Christian, non-Christian, past, present, future, wants to know things.

  18. We want to know.

  19. We want to know about the world around us.

  20. And that's because knowledge is a kind of power.

  21. It helps us make decisions.

  22. It gives us perspective.

  23. It can sometimes give us influence over other people and over outcomes.

  24. It creates opportunities for us.

  25. And we want our knowledge to be reliable and true.

  26. And so we look to sources of knowledge that are accurate.

  27. I grew up watching Dan Rather, the anchor of the CBS Evening News.

  28. I know some of you are too young to know him.

  29. Dan Rather spoke with authority.

  30. He had gravitas.

  31. He was one of the anchors of the big three networks.

  32. And when he spoke, people listened.

  33. But then, on September 8, 2004, in the midst of the U.S. presidential election,

  34. Dan Rather reported on documents that had been discovered that called into question one of the candidates in the U.S. presidential election,

  35. George W. Bush, that called into question his National Guard service.

  36. And these documents said that he had disobeyed orders and that his record had been embellished.

  37. But almost immediately after the broadcast was over, the authenticity of those documents was questioned.

  38. The font and the spacing in the documents were not those of a typewriter of the 1970s.

  39. And the source of the documents admitted that he had lied on how those documents had come into his possession.

  40. And a few weeks later, after everything had been sorted out, Dan Rather came on the air and he apologized and stated that he should not have run the story.

  41. But it was too late.

  42. His reputation was ruined at that point.

  43. He could not recover from this serious and significant blow to his credibility.

  44. And a few months later, he stepped down as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

  45. And the next year after that, he was fired altogether.

  46. He had been an anchor, a serious anchor at CBS for 24 years.

  47. So let's do some math.

  48. There are 260 weekdays in a year times 24 years.

  49. That means, and we'll be conservative here on our estimate, that means that Rather anchored the news about 6,000 times.

  50. And if in a given newscast he anchored about 10 stories, that means that over the course of his career he had anchored 60,000 stories.

  51. And yet, when he got one wrong, it destroyed his credibility.

  52. Now, it was a big one.

  53. It was a big one because it was tied up with the presidential election and questions about media bias and things like that.

  54. But one faulty story out of 60,000, and people would not take him seriously any longer as a source of knowledge.

  55. If we have high expectations for a 30-minute newscast on CBS, how much more do we require a reliable word from the Lord?

  56. A word that teaches us about how and why God made us.

  57. A word that teaches us what God values and what he hates and how we're supposed to treat each other and what we're supposed to prioritize in our lives.

  58. A word that warns that we are actually born into a hostile relationship with God and what he has done in the gospel to solve that problem and what we must do to have that solution applied to us.

  59. It's huge.

  60. The stakes are high.

  61. It is critical.

  62. We have to be able to depend on the word of God.

  63. In the Bible, God acknowledges that a word that is authoritative also must be reliable.

  64. And he addresses this issue through Moses in our passage today, Deuteronomy 18.

  65. If you, again, have your Bible, why don't you follow along with me.

  66. In the context here, Moses is giving a series of instructions to the people of Israel as they're right on the edge of going into the promised land.

  67. And Moses calls for obedience and he warns against the consequences of disobedience.

  68. And he reminds them of the resources that God has given to them to remain faithful, God's presence and his power and his word.

  69. And Moses has been an incredible prophet.

  70. He has been God's spokesman who led Israel out of slavery in Egypt.

  71. And he's the one that led Israel in the wilderness and performed incredible miracles.

  72. He was the first one to function as a prophet of the Lord.

  73. He received the word of the Lord and then turned and taught it to the people.

  74. That's what a prophet does.

  75. And he was, in fact, unique among all the prophets of the Old Testament because Exodus 33 tells us that God spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks with his friend.

  76. But then that raises a question for the Israelites.

  77. What are we going to do when Moses is gone?

  78. And here in Deuteronomy 18, Moses answers that question.

  79. And as he looks forward to Israel's entrance into the promised land, he contrasts two fundamentally different sources of knowledge.

  80. Two potentially fundamentally different sources of special knowledge.

  81. Verses 9 through 14 describe the practice of the pagan nations around them.

  82. And then verses 15 to 22 describe God's way of revealing knowledge to his people.

  83. So let's look at each of these halves in turn.

  84. How does this passage inform the way that we think about the truth of the Bible?

  85. Is the Bible reliable and trustworthy in whatever it claims?

  86. We call this the doctrine of inerrancy.

  87. The doctrine of inerrancy.

  88. The inerrancy means that whatever the Bible claims is true.

  89. Whatever the Bible claims is without error.

  90. So let's look at the first section in Deuteronomy 18, 9 to 14.

  91. When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.

  92. Verse 10.

  93. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering,

  94. anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens,

  95. or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a necromancer, or one who inquires of the dead.

  96. For whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.

  97. And because of these abominations, the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

  98. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.

  99. For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune tellers and to diviners.

  100. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do this.

  101. Moses begins by anticipating that the way the nations gain divine knowledge is different from that of Israel.

  102. But notice in verse 9 that these aren't just alternate ways of gaining knowledge.

  103. They are abominable practices.

  104. They are incompatible with God's character, and they're deeply offensive to him.

  105. These rituals provide opportunities for the gods to speak to the people through nature or through physical objects.

  106. One example of this is that the priests of the nations would take a goat, or a lamb, or something like that,

  107. and they would pray over it, and they would perform some kind of a special ritual over it.

  108. And then they would slaughter it, and they would cut it open, and then they would look at its organs.

  109. They would look at the liver, and they would look at the kidneys and the lungs,

  110. and they would say, oh, what do we see here?

  111. Are these normal, or is there any discoloration?

  112. Anything abnormally enlarged or misshapen?

  113. Because the expectation was that by looking at the organs of this animal,

  114. this was the opportunity for the God to speak.

  115. The God could communicate to them through these means.

  116. He mentions in verse 10 and 11, divination, fortune-telling, omens, sorcery, mediums, necromancy.

  117. And notice that Moses does not say here that these things don't work.

  118. In 1 Samuel chapter 28, King Saul asked a medium to bring up Samuel from the dead, and then he came.

    1 Samuel 28 chapter mention

  119. I mean, I don't know what to think about this.

  120. My grandfather in Ohio was a farmer, and when he needed to find sources of water in the field,

  121. he would take a stick, and he would walk around the field, and then the stick would all of a sudden dip.

  122. And he'd say, oh, I'll dig here for water, and there was water there.

  123. When my dad was a child, the cousins would gather around the farm table, and they would chant.

  124. True story, absolutely true story.

  125. They would chant, and the table, the heavy oak kitchen farm table would levitate.

  126. One half of it weighs about an inch or two off the ground.

  127. And then the kids would ask the table questions, and it would tap.

  128. These things work.

  129. They really do.

  130. But what they all have in common is that they are attempts to extract information from the divine world.

  131. They are at the initiative of the people.

  132. The people decide what they want to know and when they want to know it.

  133. They are in the driver's seat of this knowledge.

  134. And they all assume many different sources of gods and voices.

  135. There is no overarching authority here.

  136. Instead, there's all this conflicting information that needs to be sorted out.

  137. Because one person learns one thing in this ritual, and one person learns this thing,

  138. and maybe they're coming from different gods, and it's all under human control.

  139. And it's usually used to support human agendas and to strengthen those people who are already in power.

  140. To strengthen the position of the king, or to strengthen the position of the priesthood, or something like that.

  141. And these sources of knowledge are alive and well in other parts of the world.

  142. In Africa, in Asia, South America.

  143. When I teach at the seminary in Liberia, and we talk about these kinds of issues,

  144. the people are like, well, yeah.

  145. People do this kind of thing all the time.

  146. This is the nature of religion.

  147. Of religious practices, right?

  148. We construct religion to control the situation, to try and figure out meaning for our lives,

  149. to try and gain knowledge for ourselves.

  150. And we want a divine word.

  151. The temptation is to have a divine word that is under our control.

  152. That doesn't demand too much of us,

  153. but that hopefully we can use to benefit ourselves.

  154. And God says in the first part of this chapter,

  155. the people of Israel are not allowed to go to these sources of truth and knowledge.

  156. Look at verse 14.

  157. Moses says,

  158. But as for you, the Lord has not allowed you to do this.

  159. The people of God belong to the Lord.

  160. His word is the only legitimate authority,

  161. and he will speak when he wants,

  162. for his own purposes,

  163. and then he expects his people to obey.

  164. Because he wants good for them.

  165. But how is God going to speak?

  166. Well, let's look at the second half of our passage in verses 15 to 22.

  167. Verse 15.

  168. The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you,

  169. from your brothers.

  170. It is to him you shall listen.

  171. Just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly,

  172. when you said,

  173. Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God,

  174. or see this great fire anymore, lest I die.

  175. And the Lord said to me,

  176. They are right in what they have spoken.

  177. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers,

  178. and I will put my words in his mouth,

  179. and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

  180. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name,

  181. I myself will require it of him.

  182. Verse 20.

  183. But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name

  184. that I have not commanded him to speak,

  185. or who speaks in the name of other gods,

  186. that same prophet shall die.

  187. Verse 21.

  188. And if you say in your heart,

  189. How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?

  190. When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord,

  191. if the word does not come to pass or come true,

  192. that is a word that the Lord has not spoken.

  193. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously.

  194. You need not be afraid of him.

  195. In contrast to the nations,

  196. with their various and frantic attempts

  197. to extract knowledge from the divine word,

  198. the Lord has a gracious gift for his people.

  199. The institution of prophecy.

  200. Moses says in verse 15,

  201. The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me.

  202. Moses had access to the presence of God.

  203. He had received God's word and delivered it to the people.

  204. He mediated between God and his people,

  205. and so he will serve as a pattern.

  206. And the singular here,

  207. God will raise up for you a prophet like me.

  208. It's a generic singular.

  209. It means many prophets, right?

  210. Prophets like me.

  211. God is going to use prophets like Moses

  212. to reveal himself to the people.

  213. He's not going to use magic.

  214. He's not going to use divination.

  215. And the word order at the end of verse 15

  216. signals an important contrast.

  217. Look what it says at the end of verse 15.

  218. It is to him you shall listen.

  219. Not to the magicians and diviners.

  220. You will listen to the true source of God's revelation,

  221. the prophet,

  222. and the word that God has spoken.

  223. God has provided only this one source

  224. of divine knowledge.

  225. In verse 16,

  226. Moses refers back to Horeb,

  227. which we also read in our Bibles

  228. is called Mount Sinai.

  229. He goes back to Mount Horeb,

  230. the original gathering of God's people.

  231. It says,

  232. when you said,

  233. verse 16,

  234. let me not hear again

  235. the voice of the Lord my God

  236. or see this great fire lest I die.

  237. See, at first,

  238. it sounds like the people

  239. don't want to hear from God.

  240. But actually,

  241. they did want to hear,

  242. but they knew

  243. that because he was holy

  244. and they were sinful,

  245. they could not speak with him directly.

  246. They're like,

  247. I don't want to hear the voice of the Lord

  248. because I'll be killed.

  249. He's holy.

  250. They're sinful.

  251. It's too dangerous

  252. to be close to God.

  253. And in verse 17,

  254. God agrees with them.

  255. He says in verse 17,

  256. they are right in what they have spoken.

  257. In God's holiness,

  258. he cannot just have

  259. a direct conversation

  260. with the people.

  261. He needs representatives.

  262. He needs spokesmen.

  263. So,

  264. God says he will raise up

  265. a prophet like Moses.

  266. Look at the second half

  267. of verse 18.

  268. I will put my words

  269. in his mouth

  270. and he shall speak to them

  271. all that I command him.

  272. This is like a job description

  273. for the Old Testament prophet.

  274. Unlike the nations,

  275. it is God

  276. who will take the initiative.

  277. He will decide

  278. when to speak.

  279. It's on his terms.

  280. Unlike the nations

  281. who control the rituals

  282. and perform the rituals

  283. in order to try and

  284. get the God to do

  285. what they want him to do,

  286. the prophet obeys.

  287. The prophet obeys

  288. and serves God.

  289. And unlike the nations

  290. who have this

  291. plurality of deities

  292. all speaking different things,

  293. there's the God of thunder

  294. and there's the God of fertility

  295. and there's the God of the sea.

  296. No, no.

  297. Instead,

  298. there is one God.

  299. There is one God

  300. and his word

  301. is unified

  302. and coherent.

  303. He says,

  304. these are going to be

  305. my words.

  306. And because

  307. they are the actual

  308. spoken words

  309. by the one true God,

  310. they are authoritative

  311. and binding

  312. on the people.

  313. They must

  314. be obeyed.

  315. God will hold

  316. his people

  317. accountable to that word

  318. because it comes from him.

  319. Look what he says

  320. in verse 19.

  321. Whoever will not

  322. listen to my words

  323. that he shall speak

  324. in my name,

  325. I myself

  326. will require it of him.

  327. So,

  328. the stakes are high.

  329. If it is a word

  330. from the Lord,

  331. it must be

  332. believed

  333. and obeyed

  334. no matter what.

  335. But because

  336. the stakes are high,

  337. because the word

  338. from God

  339. is absolutely

  340. authoritative

  341. and absolutely

  342. binding,

  343. the people

  344. have to know

  345. that it actually

  346. came from God,

  347. right?

  348. They can't

  349. get something

  350. false

  351. and then

  352. find themselves

  353. bound to that.

  354. It has to be

  355. known

  356. that

  357. this comes

  358. from God

  359. because it's

  360. the source

  361. of the word

  362. that gives it

  363. its authority.

  364. And in verse 20,

  365. Moses acknowledges

  366. a potential problem.

  367. There is going

  368. to be a temptation

  369. among people

  370. in the community

  371. to fabricate

  372. the prophetic word

  373. because if the word

  374. has that much

  375. authority

  376. in its binding,

  377. well,

  378. let me make

  379. something up

  380. and then everyone's

  381. going to do

  382. what I say.

  383. there's going

  384. to be a temptation

  385. in the community

  386. to invent it

  387. or to make it up

  388. and then attribute

  389. it to God

  390. and say,

  391. hey,

  392. you'll never guess

  393. what God told me.

  394. And Moses says

  395. in verse 20,

  396. but the prophet

  397. who presumes

  398. to speak a word

  399. in my name

  400. that I have not

  401. commanded him

  402. to speak,

  403. why,

  404. why,

  405. why is that

  406. a temptation?

  407. Why is that

  408. a temptation

  409. to fabricate

  410. or invent

  411. a divine word?

  412. Well,

  413. I mean,

  414. from a purely

  415. theological standpoint,

  416. you might want

  417. to make the God

  418. say what you prefer.

  419. You want a God

  420. who acts like you

  421. and thinks like you.

  422. You want a God

  423. who agrees with you.

  424. You don't want a God

  425. that has any rough edges

  426. or says anything

  427. that you find offensive

  428. or demands

  429. too much of you

  430. in your life.

  431. or you might invent

  432. a word of the Lord

  433. for influence

  434. and power.

  435. If you control it,

  436. if you create

  437. the divine word,

  438. then you can shape

  439. people's values

  440. and control their actions.

  441. They have to listen

  442. to you, right,

  443. because

  444. the authoritative

  445. word of God.

  446. Or you might make up

  447. a divine word

  448. to excuse yourself

  449. from wrongdoing,

  450. to redefine

  451. right and wrong.

  452. To say,

  453. well,

  454. I know everyone

  455. thought that was wrong,

  456. but let me tell you,

  457. God told me it's okay.

  458. This is the question

  459. in the Garden of Eden

  460. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  461. when the serpent says,

  462. did God actually say

  463. you shall not eat

  464. of any tree?

  465. There's always a temptation

  466. to invent a word

  467. from the Lord

  468. that supports

  469. our own behavior

  470. and beliefs.

  471. the stakes

  472. are high.

  473. And so God says,

  474. if anyone does this,

  475. if anyone invents

  476. a word from the Lord

  477. or fabricates

  478. a word from the Lord

  479. that I did not

  480. actually speak,

  481. that same prophet

  482. shall die.

  483. The prophet

  484. who invents a word

  485. and attributes it

  486. to me

  487. when I didn't

  488. really speak it,

  489. that prophet

  490. shall die.

  491. It cannot happen.

  492. You cannot allow

  493. people in the community

  494. to invent something.

  495. The people

  496. in the community

  497. of Israel

  498. cannot be expected

  499. to obey a word

  500. that was just invented.

  501. The source

  502. of the divine word

  503. is what gives it

  504. its authority.

  505. So the people

  506. have to have confidence

  507. that it really came

  508. from the Lord.

  509. But that

  510. raises a question.

  511. How do we know?

  512. Someone can just

  513. claim to be a prophet.

  514. They can say,

  515. guess what?

  516. I received a word

  517. from the Lord

  518. and here's what

  519. you all have to do.

  520. It's that easy

  521. to fake it.

  522. It's super easy.

  523. So how are the people

  524. of Israel

  525. supposed to know

  526. if it's a genuine

  527. word of the Lord

  528. or not?

  529. Well,

  530. Moses answers

  531. that question

  532. in verse 22.

  533. When a prophet

  534. speaks in the name

  535. of the Lord,

  536. if the word

  537. does not come

  538. to pass

  539. or come true,

  540. that is a word

  541. that the Lord

  542. has not spoken.

  543. If the prophet

  544. speaks in the name

  545. of God

  546. on his behalf

  547. and claims

  548. that the divine word

  549. came from God

  550. and if that word

  551. does not come true,

  552. then God

  553. did not speak it.

  554. If it does not

  555. come true,

  556. it cannot be

  557. from the Lord.

  558. It must be

  559. fabricated

  560. and invented.

  561. This is based

  562. on an assumption,

  563. right?

  564. It's a pretty good

  565. assumption that God

  566. never gets things

  567. wrong.

  568. Humans get things

  569. wrong.

  570. Humans who invent

  571. or fabricate

  572. a supposedly

  573. divine word

  574. get things wrong

  575. but not the Lord.

  576. He bats

  577. a thousand.

  578. He has a perfect

  579. record.

  580. And notice here

  581. that it does not

  582. specify the nature

  583. or the seriousness

  584. of the error.

  585. It does not say,

  586. well,

  587. if it's a really

  588. important prophet

  589. who spoke it.

  590. Or if it's

  591. a prophetic word

  592. that concerns

  593. a key doctrinal

  594. issue,

  595. then it matters.

  596. It doesn't say that.

  597. It says,

  598. any time

  599. the prophetic word

  600. does not come true,

  601. God didn't say that.

  602. It doesn't rank

  603. the prophetic word

  604. into categories.

  605. Well,

  606. these are more

  607. important aspects

  608. of God's word.

  609. These are less

  610. important aspects

  611. of God's word.

  612. It's a test

  613. that only falsifies.

  614. It only falsifies.

  615. It doesn't,

  616. now,

  617. unfortunately,

  618. right,

  619. if it comes true,

  620. you don't know.

  621. If it comes true,

  622. it could be a coincidence.

  623. It could be,

  624. even a false prophet

  625. can guess

  626. and get things right

  627. sometimes.

  628. But if it ever

  629. is shown to be false,

  630. you know it's false

  631. because God never

  632. gets things wrong.

  633. And if you discover

  634. that the word

  635. is not accurate

  636. and therefore

  637. it did not come

  638. from God,

  639. then it is not

  640. authoritative.

  641. He says,

  642. just disregard it.

  643. Don't worry about that.

  644. He says at the end

  645. of verse 22,

  646. the prophet has spoken

  647. it presumptuously.

  648. You don't need

  649. to be afraid of that.

  650. So,

  651. Moses has just

  652. described for us

  653. two potential sources

  654. of a divine word here.

  655. two sources

  656. for a word

  657. that comes

  658. from the divine realm,

  659. that comes from

  660. outside of our

  661. natural world

  662. and outside of our

  663. experience.

  664. The first

  665. is utterly human.

  666. It might be obtained

  667. by the practices

  668. of the pagan nations.

  669. It's characterized

  670. by human initiative

  671. and control

  672. and manipulation.

  673. Or,

  674. it might be

  675. attributed to the Lord,

  676. but it is not authentic.

  677. It is invented

  678. or fabricated

  679. to serve

  680. the interests

  681. of the false prophet.

  682. That's one source,

  683. the human source.

  684. The second source

  685. is actually

  686. the Lord,

  687. the God of Israel.

  688. He speaks

  689. at his own initiative

  690. and on his own terms

  691. to a prophet

  692. of his own choosing.

  693. And that prophet

  694. serves as a spokesman

  695. repeating the word

  696. of the Lord faithfully.

  697. And these are the only

  698. two options.

  699. These are the only

  700. two possible sources.

  701. And not only are these

  702. the only two possible

  703. sources of the prophetic word,

  704. but these are the only

  705. two possible sources

  706. of Holy Scripture

  707. that we have

  708. in our Bible.

  709. The prophetic word

  710. that is here

  711. described for us

  712. in Deuteronomy 18,

  713. the prophetic word

  714. of Moses

  715. and David

  716. and Jeremiah

  717. and Amos

  718. and Isaiah

  719. and Daniel

  720. and Luke

  721. and Paul

  722. and John

  723. were written down

  724. over time.

  725. That prophetic word

  726. was given by God

  727. and written down

  728. over time

  729. and published

  730. in the books

  731. of our Bible.

  732. And either

  733. the words

  734. that we have

  735. in our Bible

  736. are of a human origin

  737. and the men

  738. who wrote those words

  739. are just simply

  740. doing their best,

  741. they're just trying

  742. to write something

  743. kind of inspiring

  744. for us

  745. and they're just

  746. trying to articulate

  747. a convincing faith

  748. but they're writing

  749. out of a very

  750. limited perspective,

  751. a very limited

  752. historical context

  753. and they're just

  754. kind of doing

  755. their best

  756. to come up

  757. with a plausible

  758. religion

  759. or

  760. this is the word

  761. of God

  762. and it has

  763. its source

  764. and its origin

  765. in God

  766. and if it's

  767. a human source

  768. then those people

  769. in history

  770. that wrote the Bible

  771. are going to get

  772. some things right

  773. and some things wrong

  774. and in some cases

  775. they're going to have

  776. a perspective

  777. that doesn't really

  778. hold up very well

  779. over time

  780. but if it's

  781. from a divine word

  782. then it has

  783. its source

  784. and its origin

  785. in God

  786. and it's rooted

  787. in his character.

  788. Listen to what it says

  789. in 2 Peter 1

  790. in the New Testament.

  791. No prophecy

  792. of scripture

  793. no prophecy

  794. of scripture

  795. comes

  796. from someone's

  797. own interpretation

  798. for no prophecy

  799. was ever produced

  800. by the will of man

  801. but men spoke

  802. from God

  803. as they were carried

  804. along

  805. by the Holy Spirit.

  806. So whatever

  807. Moses is teaching us

  808. here in Deuteronomy 18

  809. applies

  810. to how we think

  811. about our Bibles

  812. and how we think

  813. about scripture today.

  814. Deuteronomy 18

  815. gives us

  816. three links

  817. in a chain.

  818. Three links.

  819. the accuracy

  820. of the word

  821. indicates

  822. its divine source

  823. and the divine source

  824. is what establishes

  825. its authority.

  826. Or let's flip it around

  827. and make it negative

  828. right?

  829. The way that

  830. Deuteronomy 18

  831. puts it.

  832. The text

  833. is invalidated

  834. when it errs.

  835. And an errant word

  836. must have

  837. a merely human source

  838. and a merely human source

  839. has no authority

  840. and must be disregarded.

  841. Its accuracy

  842. indicates its source

  843. and its source

  844. indicates its authority

  845. or if we work backwards

  846. if it errs

  847. then it must be human

  848. and if it's human

  849. it has no authority.

  850. Why should we

  851. pay attention

  852. to something like that?

  853. Dan Rather

  854. anchored

  855. 60,000

  856. stories

  857. but when we

  858. learned that

  859. one of them

  860. was fabricated

  861. we're like

  862. okay

  863. we're done

  864. with you.

  865. So what is

  866. the main point

  867. of Deuteronomy 18?

  868. If we were just

  869. going to say

  870. let's just summarize

  871. this in one main point

  872. I think it's this

  873. God's word

  874. is authoritative

  875. because it was

  876. spoken by him

  877. and we know

  878. it was spoken

  879. by him

  880. because it does

  881. not err.

  882. It does not

  883. make mistakes.

  884. This is what

  885. we mean

  886. by the doctrines

  887. of inspiration

  888. and inerrancy.

  889. God's word

  890. is authoritative

  891. because it is

  892. spoken by him

  893. and we know

  894. it was spoken

  895. by him

  896. because it does

  897. not err.

  898. Now

  899. does this mean

  900. that the Bible

  901. says everything

  902. that it could say

  903. on a given topic?

  904. No.

  905. But it means

  906. that whatever

  907. the Bible

  908. does claim

  909. is always

  910. accurate.

  911. It never

  912. gets things

  913. wrong.

  914. Now let's

  915. take a couple

  916. of minutes

  917. then and

  918. reflect on

  919. what we

  920. lose

  921. if we

  922. compromise

  923. this view

  924. of Scripture.

  925. What if

  926. we were to

  927. say well

  928. I think

  929. the Bible

  930. does sometimes

  931. make mistakes.

  932. I don't think

  933. it always

  934. gets things

  935. right.

  936. I'm not

  937. sure

  938. it is

  939. entirely

  940. from God.

  941. What do

  942. we lose?

  943. Well the

  944. easy answer

  945. if we

  946. just get it

  947. directly from

  948. Deuteronomy 18

  949. is we

  950. lose the

  951. authority of

  952. Scripture.

  953. If the

  954. Bible is not

  955. accurate

  956. then it

  957. doesn't come

  958. from God

  959. and if it

  960. doesn't come

  961. from God

  962. then it

  963. doesn't really

  964. have any

  965. authority over

  966. us.

  967. But I think

  968. we can break

  969. that down a

  970. little bit

  971. and so let's

  972. talk about

  973. three

  974. might as well

  975. do three

  976. let's

  977. just talk

  978. about three

  979. quick things

  980. that we

  981. lose if

  982. we compromise

  983. our doctrine

  984. of Scripture.

  985. Number one

  986. without

  987. inerrancy

  988. and the

  989. authority of

  990. the text

  991. we lose

  992. authentic

  993. revelation.

  994. Sometimes

  995. people say

  996. that the

  997. historical

  998. details of

  999. the Bible

  1000. are just

  1001. trivia.

  1002. It doesn't

  1003. really matter

  1004. if the

  1005. Nile

  1006. actually

  1007. turned to

  1008. blood

  1009. in the

  1010. book of

  1011. Exodus.

  1012. It doesn't

  1013. really matter

  1014. if food

  1015. fell from

  1016. the sky

  1017. in the

  1018. form of

  1019. manna.

  1020. It doesn't

  1021. really matter

  1022. if the

  1023. Israelites

  1024. conquered

  1025. the

  1026. promised

  1027. land.

  1028. That's

  1029. history.

  1030. The important

  1031. thing is

  1032. that the

  1033. Bible gets

  1034. theology

  1035. right.

  1036. That we

  1037. learn the

  1038. truth about

  1039. ourselves

  1040. and the

  1041. truth about

  1042. the gospel.

  1043. That's what

  1044. really counts.

  1045. In fact I

  1046. had a

  1047. professor in

  1048. grad school

  1049. that said

  1050. that.

  1051. He said

  1052. the Bible

  1053. isn't

  1054. factual

  1055. but it's

  1056. true.

  1057. Maybe the

  1058. way that

  1059. literature is

  1060. true.

  1061. It speaks

  1062. something true

  1063. about my

  1064. heart but it

  1065. gets a lot

  1066. of things

  1067. wrong.

  1068. But the

  1069. problem with

  1070. that view

  1071. is that the

  1072. Bible unlike

  1073. other ancient

  1074. and contemporary

  1075. religious texts

  1076. anchors what

  1077. it claims in

  1078. history.

  1079. If the

  1080. Bible's

  1081. historical

  1082. claims are

  1083. wrong then

  1084. it means that

  1085. human authors

  1086. are just kind

  1087. of doing their

  1088. best.

  1089. They get

  1090. some things

  1091. wrong here

  1092. and there.

  1093. And if

  1094. human authors

  1095. are making

  1096. theological

  1097. claims about

  1098. God and

  1099. what he's

  1100. like it

  1101. also means

  1102. that they're

  1103. just sort

  1104. of doing

  1105. their best.

  1106. They're kind

  1107. of guessing.

  1108. I wonder

  1109. what God

  1110. is like.

  1111. This is what

  1112. I think.

  1113. The stories

  1114. of the Bible

  1115. tell us that

  1116. God is

  1117. powerful because

  1118. he actually

  1119. allowed the

  1120. Israelites to

  1121. cross the

  1122. Jordan on

  1123. dry ground.

  1124. It tells

  1125. us that he's

  1126. holy because

  1127. he actually

  1128. killed a

  1129. man named

  1130. Uzzah for

  1131. touching the

  1132. Ark of the

  1133. Covenant when

  1134. it started to

  1135. fall onto the

  1136. ground.

  1137. It tells us

  1138. that God is

  1139. gracious because

  1140. he actually

  1141. showed mercy

  1142. to the people

  1143. of Nineveh

  1144. when Jonah

  1145. preached to

  1146. them.

  1147. So the

  1148. history is

  1149. the anchor

  1150. and the

  1151. foundation for

  1152. the theological

  1153. claims.

  1154. And another

  1155. reason that the

  1156. Bible's historical

  1157. claims are

  1158. important is

  1159. that predictive

  1160. prophecy in the

  1161. Old Testament

  1162. that has been

  1163. fulfilled in the

  1164. short term gives

  1165. us confidence

  1166. about long-range

  1167. prophecies.

  1168. In other

  1169. words, when

  1170. Isaiah gets a

  1171. prophecy right in

  1172. his own time

  1173. period or maybe

  1174. a hundred years

  1175. in the future,

  1176. then it builds

  1177. our confidence

  1178. that when he

  1179. talks about the

  1180. new heavens and

  1181. the new earth

  1182. and God's

  1183. ultimate justice

  1184. and the kinds

  1185. of things that

  1186. Pastor Mike was

  1187. praying about in

  1188. that prayer of

  1189. lament, it

  1190. means that God

  1191. can actually do

  1192. that, that he

  1193. actually will do

  1194. that because we've

  1195. already seen him

  1196. fulfill prophecy

  1197. in the past.

  1198. Second, without

  1199. inerrancy we

  1200. lose our objective

  1201. standard of

  1202. morality that is

  1203. anchored in God's

  1204. character.

  1205. Morality refers

  1206. to objective,

  1207. absolute standards

  1208. of right and

  1209. wrong that

  1210. never change.

  1211. And how do we

  1212. know the nature

  1213. and the contents

  1214. of God's

  1215. unchanging

  1216. character?

  1217. Well, we read

  1218. about it in our

  1219. Bibles.

  1220. Our Bibles tell

  1221. us about all

  1222. kinds of things.

  1223. The right

  1224. treatment of

  1225. women, the

  1226. death penalty,

  1227. the right

  1228. attitude toward

  1229. government

  1230. authorities,

  1231. right behaviors

  1232. of sexuality,

  1233. the right

  1234. treatment of

  1235. people who are

  1236. different than

  1237. you are, the

  1238. right attitude

  1239. toward the

  1240. poor, and

  1241. toward money, and

  1242. children, and

  1243. toward your spouse,

  1244. and toward issues

  1245. of justice.

  1246. The Bible talks

  1247. about all of

  1248. these things.

  1249. And in our

  1250. society there is

  1251. such a huge

  1252. variety of

  1253. perspectives on

  1254. all these matters,

  1255. right?

  1256. And some of

  1257. them are highly

  1258. contentious.

  1259. And unfortunately

  1260. some of these

  1261. values and

  1262. issues become

  1263. associated with

  1264. national political

  1265. parties, and

  1266. then we engage in

  1267. a kind of trench

  1268. warfare, wrangling

  1269. over them in a

  1270. power play.

  1271. And so these

  1272. values and

  1273. morality become

  1274. weapons that we

  1275. use to kind of

  1276. defeat the other

  1277. side.

  1278. Here's a

  1279. ridiculous example.

  1280. A number of

  1281. months ago, do

  1282. you remember

  1283. when we saw

  1284. this little

  1285. miniature culture

  1286. war arise over

  1287. Sidney Sweeney's

  1288. genes?

  1289. Do you remember

  1290. this?

  1291. Sidney Sweeney,

  1292. the actress, did

  1293. a marketing

  1294. campaign for

  1295. American Eagle

  1296. genes.

  1297. People on the

  1298. political left

  1299. complained that

  1300. American Eagle

  1301. was advancing

  1302. white supremacy

  1303. and eugenics

  1304. because they

  1305. said she had

  1306. good genes.

  1307. But then,

  1308. people on the

  1309. right saw an

  1310. opportunity to

  1311. do battle with

  1312. the left, and

  1313. so they defended

  1314. the ads.

  1315. And they said to

  1316. people on the

  1317. left, you're being

  1318. ridiculous.

  1319. And then people

  1320. on the left were

  1321. offended because of

  1322. the way that the

  1323. ads objectified.

  1324. And then, because

  1325. they had to do

  1326. battle with the

  1327. left, the people

  1328. on the right

  1329. praised the ads

  1330. for returning to

  1331. traditional standards

  1332. of beauty.

  1333. And they went

  1334. back and forth.

  1335. It was a ridiculous

  1336. situation.

  1337. It was not our

  1338. society's best

  1339. moment.

  1340. And here's what

  1341. happened.

  1342. What happened is

  1343. that because of

  1344. the demand to

  1345. just do battle

  1346. with the other

  1347. side, conservative

  1348. Christians, because

  1349. they were doing

  1350. battle with the

  1351. left, and they

  1352. were joining the

  1353. right, ended up

  1354. defending ads

  1355. that were sensual

  1356. and fairly

  1357. inappropriate.

  1358. They gave up

  1359. their traditional

  1360. values of sexual

  1361. morality in order

  1362. to win an

  1363. argument.

  1364. When we do this

  1365. kind of thing in

  1366. our culture, we

  1367. are just drifting.

  1368. We are just

  1369. reacting and

  1370. drifting and

  1371. engaging in a

  1372. kind of trench

  1373. warfare.

  1374. There is no

  1375. objective sense of

  1376. right or wrong.

  1377. There is just

  1378. winning.

  1379. There is just

  1380. power.

  1381. We stake out our

  1382. little claim and

  1383. we're going to

  1384. defend that spot,

  1385. even if it's

  1386. drifted from

  1387. what the Bible

  1388. teaches us.

  1389. And the

  1390. problem is that

  1391. ideas of right

  1392. and wrong shift

  1393. with cultures

  1394. over time.

  1395. There was a

  1396. time in

  1397. American history

  1398. when slavery

  1399. was accepted

  1400. and defended

  1401. by the majority

  1402. of the country.

  1403. And now it is

  1404. rightly condemned.

  1405. But now the

  1406. majority of our

  1407. country accepts

  1408. homosexual marriage,

  1409. a position that

  1410. was rejected by

  1411. both political

  1412. parties only about

  1413. 30 years ago.

  1414. consensus,

  1415. social consensus

  1416. is not a

  1417. basis for

  1418. morality.

  1419. What we need

  1420. is an

  1421. authoritative

  1422. scripture that

  1423. does not

  1424. change teaching

  1425. God's enduring

  1426. will and values

  1427. that are in

  1428. effect no matter

  1429. what.

  1430. Scripture tells

  1431. us what is

  1432. right and wrong

  1433. in every

  1434. society,

  1435. in every time

  1436. period,

  1437. no matter

  1438. the circumstances.

  1439. But if we

  1440. do not hold

  1441. to the

  1442. doctrine of

  1443. inerrancy and

  1444. we say that

  1445. scripture just

  1446. kind of came

  1447. from people

  1448. who took

  1449. their best

  1450. guess,

  1451. then the

  1452. authors of

  1453. scripture are

  1454. merely adding

  1455. one more

  1456. perspective to

  1457. the chaos of

  1458. political battle.

  1459. I know what

  1460. this person

  1461. thinks,

  1462. and I know

  1463. what this

  1464. person thinks,

  1465. and here the

  1466. people in the

  1467. Bible, they

  1468. also have some

  1469. ideas too.

  1470. We'll see

  1471. what we like

  1472. the best.

  1473. No.

  1474. No, the

  1475. people in the

  1476. Bible have

  1477. written based

  1478. on God's

  1479. word, and

  1480. those values

  1481. are rooted in

  1482. the unchanging

  1483. character of

  1484. God.

  1485. Finally, number

  1486. three, without

  1487. inerrancy, we

  1488. lose our impulse

  1489. and basis for

  1490. evangelism and

  1491. missions.

  1492. There are

  1493. passages in the

  1494. Old and New

  1495. Testaments that

  1496. teach us that

  1497. we have a sin

  1498. nature that

  1499. separates us

  1500. from God and

  1501. prevents us from

  1502. being in a

  1503. relationship with

  1504. him.

  1505. Are those texts

  1506. reliable?

  1507. Or are they

  1508. only the opinions

  1509. of Isaiah and

  1510. Jeremiah and

  1511. Ezekiel and

  1512. Paul?

  1513. Jesus says in

  1514. John chapter

    John 14:6

  1515. 14, verse 6,

  1516. I am the way

  1517. and the truth

  1518. and the life.

  1519. No one comes

  1520. to the Father

  1521. except through

  1522. me.

  1523. Did Jesus

  1524. really say

  1525. that?

  1526. In Acts

    Acts 4:12

  1527. chapter 4,

  1528. verse 12,

  1529. Peter teaches

  1530. that there is

  1531. salvation in

  1532. no one else,

  1533. for there is

  1534. no other name

  1535. under heaven

  1536. given among

  1537. men by which

  1538. we must be

  1539. saved.

  1540. Is that

  1541. true?

  1542. Is it true

  1543. that Jesus

  1544. is the only

  1545. way to solve

  1546. our problem

  1547. with sin?

  1548. If so,

  1549. then that will

  1550. radically affect

  1551. our relationship

  1552. to other

  1553. religions.

  1554. sins.

  1555. And it is

  1556. a powerful

  1557. motivation for

  1558. evangelism and

  1559. missions for

  1560. people who need

  1561. to know that

  1562. because there

  1563. is no other

  1564. way of salvation.

  1565. Jesus really

  1566. did command us

  1567. in Matthew

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  1568. chapter 28 to

  1569. go and make

  1570. disciples of

  1571. all nations.

  1572. And in these

  1573. statements, the

  1574. authors of

  1575. Scripture are

  1576. not mistaken.

  1577. And therefore,

  1578. evangelism and

  1579. missions are not

  1580. only legitimate

  1581. things for the

  1582. church to do,

  1583. they are

  1584. absolutely

  1585. critical.

  1586. Because our

  1587. practice depends

  1588. on the

  1589. instructions and

  1590. we have to

  1591. know that the

  1592. instructions actually

  1593. came from God

  1594. and that they're

  1595. authoritative and

  1596. true.

  1597. So if we

  1598. compromise our

  1599. doctrine of

  1600. Scripture, if we

  1601. compromise on the

  1602. inerrancy of

  1603. Scripture, then we

  1604. not only lose

  1605. historical trivia,

  1606. you know, little

  1607. historical details or

  1608. geography or

  1609. science that may

  1610. or may not be

  1611. true, we lose

  1612. the divine source

  1613. of Scripture.

  1614. That would be a

  1615. word that the

  1616. Lord had not

  1617. spoken.

  1618. And then we

  1619. lose the

  1620. authority of

  1621. Scripture too.

  1622. We lose it all.

  1623. And we would be

  1624. left to sort

  1625. through the

  1626. statements from

  1627. news anchors and

  1628. political parties

  1629. and to drift with

  1630. the social consensus.

  1631. us.

  1632. And that is not

  1633. what God has

  1634. desired for his

  1635. church.

  1636. He has given us

1637. his holy word as a

  1638. great gift to be

  1639. believed and obeyed

  1640. in all that it

  1641. teaches because it's

  1642. true and it comes

  1643. from him.

  1644. Let's pray.

  1645. Father, we pray as

  1646. we reflect on this

  1647. passage which is so

  1648. clear about the

  1649. source of your word,

  1650. about its accuracy,

  1651. we pray that this

  1652. would settle down

  1653. into our hearts and

  1654. give us an unshakable

  1655. confidence in the

  1656. authority and the

  1657. relevance of your

  1658. word for our lives.

  1659. It is so tempting

  1660. to focus on certain

  1661. parts of Scripture

  1662. that we like the

  1663. best, to ignore

  1664. parts of Scripture

  1665. that we aren't as

  1666. crazy about, to

  1667. reject parts of

  1668. Scripture that seem

  1669. offensive.

  1670. We need a settled

  1671. confidence that this

1672. is our rock and our

1673. anchor in all that we

1674. do in our lives and

  1675. that your word is

  1676. true.

1677. And we thank you for

  1678. telling us this this

  1679. morning.

1680. In your name we pray.

  1681. Amen.
