  1. It's great to be together again this morning.

  2. Last week we talked about holding fast to the doctrine of inerrancy in our doctrine of Scripture

  3. ! And the cost of compromising our view of Scripture.

  4. This week we'll continue that theme.

  5. Continue thinking about our doctrine of Scripture,

  6. specifically the temptation to try to bring the Bible under our control.

  7. To try to make it so that it works for our own benefit instead of submitting to it.

  8. Our passage this morning is 1 Kings chapter 13.

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  9. Would you turn there in your Bibles?

  10. 1 Kings chapter 13, if you're using a few Bible in front of you,

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  11. 1 Kings chapter 13, that's page 346, I believe.

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  12. 346.

  13. This is a pretty long story.

  14. It's about 34 verses long.

  15. We're going to read some of it.

  16. We're going to summarize some of it.

  17. It's pretty long, so it would be helpful, I think, if you follow along.

  18. You can navigate there on your device.

  19. Let's open in prayer and ask for the Lord's help.

  20. Lord, we are grateful that you have spoken to us.

  21. We don't take that for granted.

  22. You have not been a silent God who has left us to try to figure out your will and your values

  23. and your plans on our own, but you've given us your holy word.

  24. And we know that this passage is an important part of what you've revealed to us.

  25. We pray for your help now to understand it.

  26. And not only to understand what it means, but what it means for us.

  27. We pray in your name.

  28. Amen.

  29. I went to college in downtown Chicago at Moody Bible Institute.

  30. And I enjoyed my time in the city.

  31. I was from a rural area and wasn't used to the big city, but it was pretty fun.

  32. A lot of great restaurants.

  33. I would go ice skating a lot down at Skate-On State, you know, by the Macy's down there, I think.

  34. Lots and lots to do.

  35. We have a fun rivalry with the Bears.

  36. We like our neighbor to the south.

  37. But, you know, Chicago has a long history of corruption.

  38. Not long ago, I was reading about a law enforcement operation called Operation Grey Lord,

  39. which was a joint undercover operation by the FBI, the IRS, the Chicago Police Department, and even the post office.

  40. All of these groups were working together in order to try and prosecute corruption in the Cook County courts.

  41. Over the course of almost four years, in the 1980s, the FBI set up, it was this elaborate scheme.

  42. They set up fake court cases, fake attorneys.

  43. They managed to get a warrant to put the first listening device in a judge's chamber because that corruption went all the way to the top.

  44. I mean, the ways that they were buying and selling justice.

  45. In the end, they indicted 92 public officials, including judges and cops and even a state representative,

  46. because officials were taking bribes to pervert the rule of law in murder cases,

  47. in sexual assault cases, in drug convictions, and even in things like child custody.

  48. There was all this legal corruption.

  49. I'm sure that's very common.

  50. I don't want to be naive.

  51. I'm sure that everywhere, powerful people are trying to corrupt the law to avoid convictions

  52. or weaponize the legal system to their own benefit in some way,

  53. or exploit loopholes in order to get out of trouble.

  54. And I think we're tempted to do this, too, with Scripture.

  55. Like U.S. federal law or Illinois state law,

  56. the Word of God presents an objective standard by which to measure our actions and hold us accountable.

  57. It indicts us for sin against God and other people.

  58. It holds us accountable with accompanying consequences.

  59. And like we talked about last week, we want knowledge.

  60. We want the power and the benefit that comes from knowing things.

  61. We talked about that last week.

  62. But we also want to do what we want to do.

  63. And so ideally, we would love a word from the Lord that we can control.

  64. We would love to have a word from God that tells us what we want to hear,

  65. that supports our own actions instead of critiquing us,

  66. that gives us a certain kind of power or influence over others

  67. or can be used in some way against our enemies.

  68. We could call that taming the Word of God or domesticating the Word of God.

  69. What are some other metaphors we could use?

  70. We could, you know, cutting the legs out from under it or removing its teeth, right?

  71. I don't know what kind of metaphor we want to use.

  72. But this is related to the doctrine of inerrancy

  73. because as we saw last week in Deuteronomy 18,

  74. an errant word, a word that is filled with errors,

  75. lacks full divine authority.

  76. An errant word is a tamed word.

  77. Its teeth have been removed.

  78. Because as we move away from the doctrine of inerrancy,

  79. we are left with a Bible that doesn't always get things right.

  80. And so if it doesn't always get things right,

  81. then that means that on any given issue,

  82. we can question it and qualify it and challenge it for our own benefit.

  83. And this issue of trying to tame or domesticate the Word of God

  84. is a subject of this really crazy story in 1 Kings chapter 13.

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  85. And it is crazy, but it's also deadly serious.

  86. This is a story about the Word of the Lord.

  87. That phrase is repeated 10 times in these 30-some verses.

  88. 10 times it talks about the Word of the Lord.

  89. That's what the story is about.

  90. And before we get into it,

  91. let's just sort of catch up here

  92. and recall where we are as we drop into the middle of 1 Kings.

  93. Israel has split into the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom.

  94. There's been the secession and kind of a civil war between them.

  95. And in 1 Kings chapter 12, the passage right before ours,

    1 Kings 12 chapter mention

  96. King Jeroboam, the ruler of the northern kingdom,

  97. is concerned that his people are going to travel south into Judah,

  98. down to Jerusalem,

  99. to worship at the temple and to make sacrifices there.

  100. And that's a pretty good concern that he has

  101. because that's exactly what God has commanded them to do.

  102. God has commanded all the people of Israel to go to Jerusalem to worship.

  103. But Jeroboam is afraid

  104. that they are going to become disloyal over time, right?

  105. Because they're going to worship somewhere else.

  106. And so what he does is he creates two calves of gold

  107. and he installs one in the very northern part of his country

  108. and one in the very southern part of his country

  109. at a city called Bethel.

  110. And he creates a new calendar of worship

  111. and it's an alternate worship, right?

  112. Don't go to Jerusalem, just stay here and worship my golden calves.

  113. And Bethel is an important site for worship

  114. because that's where the king has built an idol

  115. and that's where they're supposed to worship.

  116. And he's worshiping, he's making these illegitimate sacrifices

  117. to these idolatrous calves that he's set up.

  118. And that brings us to our story.

  119. If you want to write this on your bulletin,

  120. it takes place in four scenes.

  121. It is a long one, as I said.

  122. The first scene is in verses 1 through 10.

  123. 1 through 10.

  124. The second scene is verses 11 through 19.

  125. The third scene is verses 20 to 25.

  126. And then the fourth scene is verses 26 to 32.

  127. And we'll look at each of these sections

  128. and then we'll put it all together at the end.

  129. Here's what it says at the beginning in verse 1.

  130. And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel.

  131. And Jeroboam, the king, was standing by the altar to make offerings.

  132. And so right away at the beginning of our story,

  133. the Lord sends a man of God to confront King Jeroboam for his idolatry.

  134. And it says here that he's sent by the word of the Lord.

  135. That's the first of these occurrences of this expression, the word of the Lord.

  136. And there's no doubt about Jeroboam's guilt

  137. because he finds him in the act of making sacrifices

  138. on this illegitimate altar that he's constructed.

  139. Now, why is he called here a man of God

  140. instead of the usual word that we would expect,

  141. which is a prophet?

  142. Well, this term man of God is used quite often in the Old Testament.

  143. It's a label that is used for Moses and Samuel and Elijah and Elisha and David

  144. and a number of other people.

  145. And interestingly, whereas the word prophet can refer to a false prophet or a true prophet,

  146. the word man of God is always used of a true prophet of the Lord.

  147. So I think that the reason it calls this person a man of God here

  148. is to distinguish him from a false prophet that we're going to meet later in verse 11.

  149. This man of God is not named or identified in any way.

  150. And that's probably important because it doesn't matter who he is.

  151. It doesn't matter.

  152. He's there to deliver the powerful and the true word of the Lord.

  153. That is his task and his job.

  154. And he's there to confront the king.

  155. And we've got to give him some credit.

  156. That would take some guts.

  157. Because he's on the king's turf.

  158. He is coming to confront the king at Bethel,

  159. the headquarters of the king's idolatry,

  160. right after one of the king's religious feasts,

  161. while the king is making a sacrifice.

  162. This is a place of power.

  163. And now the man of God is coming there to confront him.

  164. And that's what we would expect because God's power confronts every human,

  165. every human power, religious, political, social.

  166. God's word speaks against those things.

  167. And he proclaims God's word against the altar in verse 2.

  168. And he predicts three things, right?

  169. Verse 2.

  170. First, he predicts that a future king named Josiah will be born to the house of David.

  171. Then number two, he predicts that Josiah will kill the idolatrous priest that the king Jeroboam has employed.

  172. And three, that Josiah will desecrate this altar.

  173. But he is predicting something 300 years in the future.

  174. So who is going to believe a thing like that, right?

  175. Just because the man of God says it.

  176. And so in verse 3, he announces a sign.

  177. And a regular sign is just an indicator.

  178. It draws attention to something or it's a reminder of something.

  179. It serves as a promise of something.

  180. And often it isn't miraculous at all.

  181. We have signs in the Old Testament like just a word, someone's word,

  182. or a rainbow in the sky,

  183. or a pile of stones is a sign of something.

  184. It can just be a reminder.

  185. But the Hebrew word here for sign is a special word.

  186. And it would really be better to translate it as wonder or a miracle.

  187. This man of God is going to do something.

  188. He's going to do a miraculous sign to prove the authenticity of his word against King Jeroboam.

  189. And so he says that the altar will split open

  190. and the ashes that have accumulated from sacrifices will spill out.

  191. And that demonstration of power now will validate the long-range prediction of King Josiah 300 years in the future.

  192. Right?

  193. When you see the miraculous altar split open now,

  194. you will know that God's word 300 years in the future will come true.

  195. Now, in verse 4, when King Jeroboam hears this,

  196. his first response is to persecute the man of God.

  197. The word of God is a threat to him.

  198. It's a threat to his program of idolatry and his power.

  199. And so when he hears the speech of the man of God,

  200. look what it says in verse 4, right in the middle.

  201. One translation says that his hand withered.

  202. Another translation says that it shriveled up.

  203. The king has been debilitated.

  204. Then, apparently at that same moment,

  205. if we look at verse 5,

  206. the altar splits open and the ashes pour out

  207. and now we have two acts of God's power.

  208. The king's hand has shriveled up as a reaction to his attempted persecution

  209. and the altar has broken open as an immediate miraculous sign

  210. that confirms the prophetic word.

  211. And then in verse 6,

  212. the man of God restores the shriveled hand of the king

  213. and there's a third miracle.

  214. He heals him.

  215. And now there is no doubt at all

  216. that God's word is true

  217. and he cannot be resisted

  218. because there's been three miracles in about 10 minutes.

  219. Well, it didn't work very well for the king to persecute the man of God.

  220. So in verse 7, he decides to take a different approach.

  221. He invites the man home for lunch.

  222. He says, look at verse 7, he says,

  223. come home with me and refresh yourself

  224. and I will give you a reward.

  225. Well, that sounds pretty nice.

  226. I mean, now he's being invited to be a guest of the king in the palace.

  227. I'm sure the man of God has had a long journey from Judah

  228. and he wouldn't mind some delicious food

  229. and a rest and a beautiful room

  230. and besides, the king says something about a reward.

  231. Use your imagination.

  232. That sounds pretty good.

  233. But the man of God categorically refuses the offer

  234. and he says that God has forbidden him from going home with the king.

  235. Look what it says in verse 9.

  236. Well, that seems strange.

  237. Those are strange instructions.

  238. First of all, why would the king invite the prophet home with him?

  239. And second, why would God specifically command the prophet

  240. not to go home with anyone

  241. and not to eat or drink with them?

  242. It seems weird until we realize that this has attempted corruption.

  243. The king is saying, let's see if we can make a deal.

  244. Why should we be enemies?

  245. He says to the man of God, come home.

  246. Let's talk this through.

  247. I'll feed you.

  248. I'll give you a reward.

  249. Let's see if we can work something out here.

  250. Eating and drinking together imply fellowship

  251. fellowship and fellowship implies corruption

  252. and God is prohibiting the man of God

  253. from eating or drinking with anyone

  254. or returning the way he came

  255. because he doesn't want any interference

  256. with the man of God's mission here.

  257. Any attempted corruption.

  258. If the persecution doesn't work,

  259. then the king thinks to himself,

  260. well, I'll just kind of tame or domesticate God's word.

  261. I'll bring it into my own house.

  262. I'll bring God's word under my own authority.

  263. I'll control it for my own purposes.

  264. But the man of God says, no, I'm not going home with you.

  265. I'm going home a different way.

  266. And look what it says in verse 10.

  267. So he went home another way

  268. and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.

  269. Okay, so far so good.

  270. That's the end of scene one.

  271. God's word confronts human powers,

  272. even the king and his government.

  273. God validates his word with three powerful miracles,

  274. including protecting his man of God,

  275. his prophet from persecution.

  276. And when the king tries to corrupt

  277. or domesticate God's word

  278. and bring it under his roof

  279. and under his authority,

  280. God says, no, we're not going to do that.

  281. His word has to remain free.

  282. It has to be nonpartisan.

  283. It has to be independently authoritative.

  284. All right, scene two, verses 11 to 19.

  285. Verse 11.

  286. Now an old prophet lived in Bethel

  287. and his sons came and told him

  288. all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel.

  289. They also told their father

  290. the words that he had spoken to the king.

  291. And so in the second scene,

  292. we're introduced to an old prophet

  293. who lived in Bethel,

  294. that same town,

  295. that same place of idolatry

  296. that the king had set up.

  297. This is the headquarters of the king's idolatry.

  298. And it does not say here

  299. that he's a true prophet of the Lord.

  300. Prophets were often sort of employed by the king

  301. to tell him what he wanted to hear.

  302. But all it says is he's a prophet.

  303. He's supposedly someone

  304. who receives a message from the Lord

  305. and then delivers it.

  306. And when he hears about this confrontation

  307. that had taken place

  308. between the man of God and the king,

  309. he sets out to find this man of God.

  310. And his sons saddle a donkey for him.

  311. And he gets on the donkey.

  312. And even though the man of God

  313. had obeyed the Lord

  314. by going home a different way back to Judah,

  315. he finds him.

  316. The old prophet finds him.

  317. And he rides up to him on his donkey.

  318. And he finds the man of God sitting under a tree.

  319. Obviously taking some sort of a rest,

  320. you know, on his long journey.

  321. And look at the middle of verse 14.

  322. And the old prophet said to him,

  323. are you the man of God who came from Judah?

  324. And he said, I am.

  325. And then he said to him,

  326. come home with me and eat bread.

  327. I mean, what is it with these hospitable people?

  328. They're so hospitable.

  329. See, the old prophet hears

  330. about the power of God's word.

  331. The power of God's word

  332. to make the king's hand shrivel up

  333. or to make the altar split open

  334. or to heal the king's hand.

  335. And he wants some of that.

  336. He wants some of that power.

  337. And so now he tries

  338. to bring God's word under his roof.

  339. God's word represents influence and power.

  340. And he thinks, come home with me.

  341. Let's talk this through.

  342. See if we can make some kind of a deal.

  343. Let's see if I can use God's word

  344. for my advantage and my personal status.

  345. And again, the man of God refuses.

  346. He repeats the instructions

  347. that were given to him by God in verse 16.

  348. And this is important.

  349. It's important because it tells us

  350. that the instructions were clear.

  351. It tells us that there is no confusion

  352. in the mind of this man of God

  353. about exactly what he was supposed to do

  354. and not do.

  355. He knows what God has commanded.

  356. Do not go home with anyone

  357. to eat or drink.

  358. And then, verse 18,

  359. the old prophet invents

  360. a prophetic word on the spot.

  361. Remember we talked about this last week

  362. in Deuteronomy 18.

  363. What happens when a prophet says,

  364. hey, I just heard from the Lord

  365. and it's a lie.

  366. He invents it on the spot.

  367. Look what he says in verse 18.

  368. I also am a prophet as you are.

  369. And an angel spoke to me

  370. by the word of the Lord saying,

  371. bring him back with you

  372. into your house

  373. that he may eat

  374. and eat bread and drink water.

  375. But he lied to him.

  376. The old prophet says to this man of God,

  377. hey, how would you like a second opinion?

  378. I'm also a prophet.

  379. What a coincidence.

  380. And you may have heard from the Lord,

  381. but so did I.

  382. And he told me something different.

  383. He gave me a different word of the Lord.

  384. And the old prophet makes an explicit claim

  385. to divine source and divine authority.

  386. He says, an angel spoke to me.

  387. Wow, that's impressive.

  388. And it was by the word of the Lord

  389. that this word came to me.

  390. And he wants you to come home

  391. and eat and drink with me.

  392. He is by definition a false prophet.

  393. Because he has spoken a word

  394. in the name of the Lord,

  395. but it is a lie.

  396. It is a word that he has just invented

  397. and fabricated.

  398. And the man of God knows

  399. what God has commanded him.

  400. He has repeated the instructions

  401. twice in full.

  402. He has seen the word of God

  403. validated by three miracles.

  404. And now this false prophet

  405. directly contradicts

  406. what God had told him to do.

  407. It should be obvious

  408. that this is a lie

  409. and it is not really from the Lord

  410. because God would never

  411. contradict himself that way.

  412. But he compromises.

  413. Look at verse 19.

  414. So he went back with him

  415. and ate bread in his house

  416. and drank water.

  417. Maybe he thought,

  418. well, you know,

  419. I guess it's possible

  420. that God's original word

  421. was in error.

  422. I suppose it's possible

  423. that God told me one thing

  424. but now it's been superseded

  425. and he's changed his mind.

  426. I suppose it's possible

  427. that this is a new

  428. and improved word of the Lord

  429. that we all like

  430. a little bit better.

  431. It's more relevant.

  432. It's certainly easier to accept.

  433. It comes with concrete benefits.

  434. I wouldn't mind some lunch.

  435. I mean,

  436. does this sound familiar?

  437. Do we do this?

  438. We have been taught

  439. all our lives

  440. that the Bible is God's word

  441. and we believe that.

  442. And then we hear something

  443. that directly contradicts

  444. what God's word says.

  445. Something from a friend

  446. or something from a book

  447. or someone that we respect.

  448. and it just sounds

  449. so attractive.

  450. It sounds so loving.

  451. It sounds more generous.

  452. It sounds more open.

  453. It sounds more flexible.

  454. Surely that new word

  455. is what God really wants.

  456. Surely that new word

  457. is what God really thinks

  458. or at least what I wish

  459. he would think.

  460. and we compromise.

  461. It says in verse 19

  462. that the man of God

  463. went home with the old prophet

  464. and the word of God

  465. has now been domesticated

  466. and tamed.

  467. Or has it?

  468. Let's look at verse 3.

  469. Scene 3.

  470. Scene 3, verses 20 to 25.

  471. The man of God

  472. and the old prophet

  473. are sitting at the table

  474. enjoying lunch

  475. in direct disobedience

  476. of God's word

  477. and suddenly

  478. the old prophet

  479. who we have been told

  480. is a false prophet

  481. speaks a true word

  482. that really is from God.

  483. This is when the story

  484. really goes crazy.

  485. Right?

  486. Suddenly the false prophet

  487. speaks a true word

  488. from the Lord.

  489. It's a big surprise

  490. but in some ways

  491. it shouldn't be

  492. because God

  493. is not limited.

  494. We read in Numbers chapter 22

    Numbers 22 chapter mention

  495. that God speaks

  496. through a donkey.

  497. We read in 1 Kings 19

  498. that he speaks to Elijah

  499. in the sound

  500. of a low whisper.

  501. We read in Daniel chapter 5

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  502. that God communicates

  503. to a king

  504. by writing on a wall.

  505. And here in 1 Kings chapter 13

    1 Kings 13 chapter mention

  506. he communicates

  507. through a false prophet.

  508. Look at verse 21.

  509. He cried to the man of God

  510. who came from Judah.

  511. Thus says the Lord.

  512. Because you have disobeyed

  513. the word of the Lord

  514. and have not kept

  515. the command

  516. that the Lord your God

  517. commanded you

  518. but have come back

  519. and have eaten bread

  520. and drunk water

  521. in the place of which

  522. he said to you

  523. eat no bread

  524. and drink no water

  525. your body shall not come

  526. to the tomb

  527. of your fathers.

  528. It was not

  529. that the man of God

  530. was confused

  531. about the contents

  532. of the word of God.

  533. He wasn't uncertain

  534. about what God

  535. had commanded him

  536. he just disregarded it.

  537. He compromised

  538. and he didn't

  539. have to do that.

  540. And as a result

  541. the old prophet

  542. predicts

  543. through the word

  544. of the Lord

  545. that the man of God

  546. will not be buried

  547. with his fathers.

  548. Now there's no response

  549. from the man of God.

  550. He finishes his meal.

  551. He saddles

  552. the old prophet's donkey.

  553. And look at verse 24.

  554. As he went away

  555. a lion

  556. met him on the road

  557. and killed him.

  558. And his body

  559. was thrown in the road

  560. and the donkey

  561. stood beside it

  562. and the lion

  563. also stood beside the body.

  564. Wow.

  565. There's this

  566. sudden act of violence.

  567. The lion kills

  568. the man of God

  569. on the road.

  570. And that could be

  571. a coincidence.

  572. I mean we know

  573. that lions are very dangerous

  574. and they were dangerous

  575. in ancient Israel.

  576. But what is weird

  577. and very unusual

  578. is that after killing

  579. the man of God

  580. the lion just stands there.

  581. He doesn't eat

  582. the corpse

  583. of the man.

  584. He doesn't eat

  585. the donkey.

  586. The lion is just

  587. standing there.

  588. It's weird, right?

  589. And it's so weird

  590. that it says

  591. that when people

  592. see this

  593. they go into the city

  594. and they start

  595. talking about it.

  596. Hey, did you guys see

  597. what was on the road

  598. over there?

  599. But did you notice something?

  600. The lion

  601. doesn't eat.

  602. The man of God

  603. ate

  604. against the word

  605. of the Lord

  606. even though God

  607. had commanded him

  608. not to.

  609. But the lion

  610. stands there

  611. on the side

  612. of the road

  613. as a symbol

  614. of the man of God's

  615. compromise

  616. and disobedience

  617. of the word

  618. of the Lord

  619. because even though

  620. it's a lion,

  621. even though it's

  622. just an animal,

  623. it doesn't eat.

  624. And that's the end

  625. of scene three.

  626. All right, quickly,

  627. scene four,

  628. verses 26 to 32.

  629. When the old prophet,

  630. the false prophet,

  631. hears about the corpse

  632. of the man of God

  633. lying on the road

  634. and the lion

  635. and the donkey

  636. standing there

  637. next to it,

  638. he recognizes,

  639. wait a minute,

  640. that's the man of God

  641. that I just had

  642. over for lunch.

  643. Look what he says

  644. at the end

  645. verse 26.

  646. It is the man of God

  647. who disobeyed

  648. the word of the Lord.

  649. Therefore,

  650. the Lord has given him

  651. to the lion

  652. which has torn him

  653. and killed him

  654. according to the word

  655. that the Lord

  656. spoke to him.

  657. Now,

  658. I'm guessing

  659. that this old

  660. false prophet

  661. has probably

  662. invented

  663. every prophetic word

  664. he has ever spoken.

  665. He is probably

  666. a serial liar.

  667. It's probably his job

  668. to just make things up.

  669. But now

  670. that his own word

  671. has come true

  672. when he told the man

  673. of God,

  674. you will not be buried

  675. in the tomb

  676. of your fathers,

  677. he recognizes

  678. that the word

  679. of God is true.

  680. And so once again

  681. in verse 27,

  682. he saddles a donkey

  683. and he goes

  684. to find the body

  685. and he finds the body

  686. of the man of God

  687. and look at the end

  688. of verse 28.

  689. The lion

  690. had not eaten

  691. the body

  692. or torn the donkey.

  693. The narrator

  694. tells us again,

  695. he wants us

  696. to notice this.

  697. The lion

  698. did not eat.

  699. And the old prophet

  700. takes the corpse

  701. of the man of God

  702. and look at

  703. verses 30 and 31.

  704. He laid the body

  705. in his own grave

  706. and they mourned

  707. over him saying,

  708. Alas,

  709. my brother!

  710. And after he had buried him,

  711. he said to his sons,

  712. When I die,

  713. bury me in the grave

  714. in which the man

  715. of God is buried

  716. and lay my bones

  717. beside his bones.

  718. So there's two things

  719. we need to notice here.

  720. First,

  721. the word of the Lord

  722. came true again.

  723. The man of God

  724. was not buried

  725. in his own family tomb.

  726. And second,

  727. God had told

  728. the man of God

  729. not to accept

  730. hospitality in Bethel.

  731. And the irony is

  732. that not only

  733. has he come

  734. to the old prophet's house

  735. for lunch,

  736. but he is buried

  737. in the old prophet's tomb

  738. and he will remain

  739. in Bethel forever.

  740. He will be

  741. a permanent resident

  742. in the place

  743. of the king's idolatry.

  744. That is ironic.

  745. And in verse 32,

  746. the old man

  747. concludes

  748. what all of us

  749. are supposed to conclude

  750. at the end

  751. of this wild story.

  752. Look at verse 32.

  753. For the saying

  754. that he called out

  755. by the word of the Lord

  756. against the altar

  757. in Bethel

  758. and against all the houses

  759. of the high places

  760. that are in the cities

  761. of Samaria

  762. shall surely

  763. come to pass.

  764. The word of God

  765. cannot be stopped.

  766. It is true.

  767. It will come true.

  768. And when we look

  769. over in our Bibles

  770. at 2 Kings chapter 23,

    2 Kings 23 chapter mention

  771. we find out

  772. that 300 years later,

  773. King Josiah

  774. did tear down

  775. that altar.

  776. He did kill

  777. the idolatrous priest.

  778. He burned human bones

  779. on it

  780. to defile

  781. and desecrate it

  782. according to

  783. the word of the Lord.

  784. It came true.

  785. Everything has come

  786. full circle.

  787. The word of the Lord

  788. against Jeroboam

  789. will come true.

  790. Well,

  791. there's a lot going on

  792. in this story.

  793. So let me summarize

  794. two points

  795. that lead us

  796. kind of toward

  797. the main theological

  798. point here.

  799. First of all,

  800. the main conflict here

  801. is an attempt

  802. to domesticate

  803. or tame

  804. the word of God.

  805. First,

  806. the king invites

  807. the man of God

  808. to his house.

  809. He's attempting

  810. corruption.

  811. He wants the word of God

  812. kind of off his case,

  813. get off my back.

  814. He wants to remove

  815. the pressure

  816. of conviction

  817. and condemnation.

  818. And then,

  819. the old prophet

  820. invites the man of God

  821. to his house.

  822. He has a different motivation.

  823. He wants to

  824. harness that power

  825. to use it

  826. for himself.

  827. And I think

  828. this is why

  829. we keep hearing

  830. about donkeys.

  831. Doesn't it seem like

  832. there's a lot of donkeys

  833. in this story?

  834. The donkey

  835. takes the old prophet

  836. to find the man of God.

  837. It stands by the man of God

  838. when he's been killed.

  839. It carries the man of God's

  840. body to the tomb.

  841. I think donkeys here

  842. are symbols

  843. of these compromises.

  844. Second,

  845. despite their attempts,

  846. actually,

  847. the word of God

  848. will not be domesticated.

  849. It will not be tamed.

  850. Even though the man of God

  851. faces down

  852. the king of Israel

  853. in the epicenter

  854. of his system

  855. of idolatry,

  856. in all of his power

  857. and high position,

  858. the king's hand

  859. shrivels up,

  860. the altar splits open,

  861. the king's hand is healed,

  862. God is in total

  863. control of that situation.

  864. And even though

  865. the man of God

  866. compromises

  867. and disobeys

  868. and goes home

  869. with the old prophet,

  870. God speaks

  871. through the old prophet.

  872. He's not limited.

  873. It's not like God says,

  874. well,

  875. I had one

  876. true prophet

  877. and I've lost him

  878. so now there's no way

  879. I can communicate.

  880. No,

  881. then he just speaks

  882. through the false prophet.

  883. His word cannot be stopped.

  884. And when the old man

  885. is killed,

  886. I'm sorry,

  887. when the man of God

  888. is killed,

  889. the lion,

  890. a ferocious beast

  891. that usually probably

  892. can't control its appetite,

  893. does not eat.

  894. And when the false prophet

  895. sees God's word

  896. come true,

  897. he realizes that

  898. what the man of God

  899. predicted about Jeroboam

  900. and his altar

  901. in the future

  902. will also come true.

  903. The word of God,

  904. despite all these attempts,

  905. cannot be corrupted,

  906. it cannot be tamed,

  907. it cannot be domesticated,

  908. it speaks

  909. with absolute truth.

  910. And absolute authority

  911. to every human power.

  912. Here I think

  913. is the big idea

  914. of this story.

  915. The word of God

  916. cannot be domesticated,

  917. it is true

  918. and authoritative.

  919. That's our big idea.

  920. The word of God

  921. cannot be domesticated,

  922. it cannot be controlled,

  923. it cannot be tamed

  924. or leveraged

  925. or harnessed

  926. or corrupted,

  927. it is true

  928. and authoritative.

  929. But,

  930. the man of God

  931. compromised

  932. by assuming

  933. that God's word

  934. was in error,

  935. by assuming

  936. that God's word

  937. was open to debate

  938. and he ended up

  939. dead on the side

  940. of the road.

  941. It's like we said

  942. last week,

  943. either

  944. God's word

  945. in scripture

  946. is a merely

  947. human text

  948. with some good ideas

  949. and some bad ideas,

  950. with some things

  951. that the authors

  952. got right

  953. and some things

  954. that they got wrong

  955. and if that's the case

  956. then we can just

  957. safely disregard it

  958. because it's just

  959. a couple of guys

  960. and what they think.

  961. Or,

  962. the other option is

  963. that God's word

  964. in scripture

  965. in our Bibles

  966. is the independent,

  967. true,

  968. reliable authority

  969. to which we are

  970. all accountable.

  971. And if that's true,

  972. then we must

  973. obey it

  974. and believe it.

  975. And those are really

  976. the only two options.

  977. When we compromise

  978. our doctrine of scripture,

  979. when we say

  980. that the Bible

  981. has errors

  982. and that it gets

  983. some things wrong,

  984. what we are saying

  985. is that at least

  986. to some extent

  987. it is a merely

  988. human text.

  989. We're trying

  990. to domesticate it.

  991. We're trying

  992. to tame it.

  993. We're trying

  994. to kind of

  995. knock off

  996. some of those

  997. sharp edges

  998. so it isn't

  999. as embarrassing

  1000. or so that it

  1001. fits our world view

  1002. or our experience

  1003. a little bit better

  1004. or so that it

  1005. isn't so offensive

  1006. to people

  1007. or so that other

  1008. people will like

  1009. it more.

  1010. And like the man

  1011. of God,

  1012. we know

  1013. that God's

  1014. revelation

  1015. has been validated

  1016. by miracles

  1017. and we know

  1018. that this is

  1019. the word of God

  1020. that has been

  1021. passed down to us

  1022. through countless

  1023. generations

  1024. of the people

  1025. of God

  1026. and we know

  1027. that this

  1028. is the word

  1029. that has been

  1030. recognized

  1031. by the people

  1032. of God

  1033. as inspired

  1034. by the Holy Spirit

  1035. and breathed

  1036. out by him

  1037. and we know

  1038. what it says

  1039. and we know

  1040. what it claims

  1041. but then

  1042. like the old prophet

  1043. someone with

  1044. some other kind

  1045. of authority

  1046. comes along

  1047. a scientist

  1048. or a scholar

  1049. or a politician

  1050. or a celebrity

  1051. or a good friend

  1052. and they say

  1053. well I'm not sure

  1054. the Bible means

  1055. it quite that way

  1056. I'm sure that God

  1057. is a little bit

  1058. more flexible

  1059. than that

  1060. and then we say

1061. like the man of God

  1062. okay let's have

  1063. lunch at your house

  1064. I can think of

  1065. a couple of ways

  1066. that we might be

  1067. tempted to compromise

1068. our view of the Bible

  1069. there are others

  1070. but here's two

  1071. one temptation

  1072. is to compromise

  1073. to protect the Bible

  1074. from being offensive

  1075. the good news

  1076. of inerrancy

  1077. the good news

  1078. of the doctrine

  1079. of inerrancy

  1080. is that we don't

  1081. have to pick

  1082. and choose

  1083. the whole Bible

  1084. is important

  1085. and nowhere

  1086. in the Bible

  1087. are there any

  1088. false claims

  1089. but of course

  1090. that's also

  1091. the bad news

  1092. right

  1093. inerrancy

  1094. means

  1095. that those

  1096. passages

  1097. in Scripture

  1098. that seem

  1099. embarrassing

  1100. or are really

  1101. out of step

  1102. with our culture

  1103. are the authoritative

  1104. word of God

  1105. and must be

  1106. believed and

  1107. accepted

  1108. our culture

  1109. is at the point

  1110. now when the

  1111. Bible

  1112. and the views

  1113. that we hold

  1114. from the Bible

  1115. are viewed

  1116. as evil

  1117. sometimes the

  1118. Bible has a

  1119. sharp

  1120. sharp

  1121. contradiction

  1122. with culture

  1123. that everyone

  1124. has a sin

  1125. nature

  1126. that Jesus

  1127. is the only

  1128. hope of

  1129. salvation

  1130. that marriage

  1131. is between

  1132. only one man

  1133. and one woman

  1134. that it is

  1135. wrong and

  1136. sinful

  1137. to entertain

  1138. ourselves

  1139. with certain

  1140. things

  1141. that consumerism

  1142. is a sin

  1143. and spending

  1144. all of our

  1145. money on

  1146. ourselves

  1147. instead of

  1148. submitting it

  1149. to the Lord

  1150. is a sin

  1151. how do we

  1152. respond to

  1153. that temptation

  1154. to kind of

  1155. tame it

  1156. so that it's

  1157. less offensive

  1158. we have to be

  1159. we have to be

  1160. determined

  1161. to be loyal

  1162. to God

  1163. first

  1164. and to make

  1165. everything else

  1166. secondary

  1167. we have to

  1168. cultivate a

  1169. love for

  1170. scripture

  1171. even the

  1172. moral laws

  1173. we have to

  1174. recognize that

  1175. God prohibits

  1176. things because

  1177. he loves us

  1178. and he wants

  1179. our good

  1180. he knows

  1181. that those

  1182. sins will

  1183. destroy us

  1184. and they will

  1185. destroy the

  1186. people that

  1187. we love

  1188. the second

  1189. temptation

  1190. is to

  1191. compromise

  1192. our view

  1193. of the

  1194. Bible

  1195. in order

  1196. to excuse

  1197. or allow

  1198. for personal

  1199. sin

  1200. one time

  1201. I heard a

  1202. New Testament

  1203. scholar say

  1204. that many

  1205. people

  1206. compromise

  1207. their view

  1208. of scripture

  1209. in college

  1210. because they

  1211. want to be

  1212. sexually

  1213. promiscuous

  1214. we've heard

  1215. these stories

  1216. we've heard

  1217. stories of

  1218. people caught

  1219. in adultery

  1220. or moving

  1221. toward adultery

  1222. and then

  1223. it's amazing

  1224. suddenly they

  1225. find out that

  1226. scripture

  1227. doesn't prohibit

  1228. adultery

  1229. people

  1230. conveniently

  1231. ignore

  1232. what the

  1233. what scripture

  1234. says about

  1235. the sin

  1236. of divorce

  1237. people ignore

  1238. what scripture

  1239. teaches about

  1240. loving our

  1241. enemies

  1242. even our

  1243. political

  1244. enemies

  1245. but

  1246. what we

  1247. need to

  1248. do

  1249. is follow

  1250. scripture

  1251. as the

  1252. absolute

  1253. guide

  1254. to what

  1255. God wants

  1256. from us

  1257. confess

  1258. repent

  1259. do not

  1260. put up

  1261. with any

  1262. hidden

  1263. sin

  1264. that will

  1265. weaken

  1266. you

  1267. don't

  1268. allow

  1269. small

  1270. compromises

  1271. to grow

  1272. and lead

  1273. to bigger

  1274. ones

  1275. in C.S.

  1276. Lewis's

  1277. book

  1278. The Silver

  1279. Chair

  1280. Aslan

  1281. who represents

  1282. Jesus

  1283. gives

  1284. Eustace

  1285. and Jill

  1286. four signs

  1287. that they

  1288. must memorize

  1289. and repeat

  1290. in order

  1291. to be

  1292. successful

  1293. on their

  1294. adventurous

  1295. journey

  1296. and Aslan

  1297. makes Jill

  1298. repeat these

  1299. four signs

  1300. over and

  1301. over until

  1302. she has

  1303. them

  1304. memorized

  1305. he warns

  1306. her that

  1307. once they

  1308. get into

  1309. Narnia

  1310. and the

  1311. adventure is

  1312. confusing

  1313. it will be

  1314. easy to

  1315. forget the

  1316. signs

  1317. and that

  1318. she must

  1319. repeat them

  1320. every morning

  1321. every afternoon

  1322. and every

  1323. evening

  1324. so that

  1325. nothing

  1326. can make

  1327. her forget

  1328. them

  1329. but then

  1330. as the

  1331. children are

  1332. on their

  1333. adventure

  1334. they do

  1335. forget the

  1336. signs

  1337. and it

  1338. doesn't go

  1339. well

  1340. they run

  1341. into all

  1342. kinds of

  1343. problems

  1344. and danger

  1345. and troubles

  1346. because they

  1347. have forgotten

  1348. their instructions

  1349. from Aslan

  1350. the man of

  1351. God in this

  1352. story knew

  1353. his instructions

  1354. he knew what

  1355. God had

  1356. commanded him

  1357. to do

  1358. and he

  1359. repeated those

  1360. instructions

  1361. but he

  1362. compromised

  1363. in a moment

  1364. and it led

  1365. to disaster

  1366. what do we

  1367. need to

  1368. recite

  1369. what have

  1370. we been

  1371. told about

  1372. the nature

  1373. of scripture

  1374. what do we

  1375. need to

  1376. allow to

  1377. sink deep

  1378. down in

  1379. our hearts

  1380. in order to

  1381. fortify and

  1382. strengthen us

  1383. for the

  1384. difficult days

  1385. to come

  1386. I just want

  1387. to end

  1388. today by

  1389. reciting a

  1390. few key

  1391. verses of

  1392. scripture

  1393. about

  1394. scripture

  1395. and these

  1396. will be

  1397. our signs

  1398. that we

  1399. recite

  1400. and remember

  1401. to strengthen

  1402. our hearts

  1403. to accept
