  1. I've got to set up a prop.

  2. These are the waters of baptism.

  3. Calm down the days to it.

  4. Here's the question.

  5. What would it take for you to reschedule something on that day?

  6. At that time?

  7. What would it take?

  8. And I'm guessing it would take something important and likely something good.

  9. We've got a baptism coming up in just over a month.

  10. It's Sunday, March 29th, 4 p.m.

  11. Please, please get it on your calendar.

  12. And I'm going to make a case.

  13. If you've got something planned today for that date, you should reschedule.

  14. It also occurred to me that not everyone in the room may know what the New Testament says about baptism

  15. and why get baptism.

  16. Why is baptism so important and good that you'd reschedule your lives around it?

  17. You might be saying, I'm not even a Christian.

  18. Why would I even get baptized?

  19. If you were to become a Christian, soon thereafter, you would need to be baptized.

  20. So just kind of some truth in advertising.

  21. Or maybe you're here and you're like, I'm a Christian.

  22. I even remember when I was baptized.

  23. It still means so much to me.

  24. I remember that.

  25. And you're like, do I really need to listen now?

  26. Yes, you do.

  27. Because you need to be able to give some reasons to people you love, to other Christians for

  28. why they should get baptized.

  29. Whether that is a friend or a co-worker or a child or a grandchild.

  30. Now here's another little bit delicate one.

  31. I'm a Christian.

  32. But when I was baptized, I don't think I was a Christian.

  33. I was an infant.

  34. I was a child.

  35. I was a young adult.

  36. And the church that we were part of at that time, or my parents, were really insistent on that.

  37. They meant well for me.

  38. But when I reflect back on those days and where I'm at right now, I wasn't a Christian.

  39. I didn't put my faith in Christ.

  40. I hadn't turned from my sin and turned to Christ.

  41. So you're asking, well, do I need to be baptized again?

  42. Do I need to be re-baptized?

  43. And here's the case I'm going to make.

  44. You don't need to be re-baptized.

  45. You need to be baptized.

  46. I was baptized soon after I believed in Jesus.

  47. This is another situation.

  48. But I walked away from the faith for years.

  49. Should I get baptized again to rededicate my life?

  50. Nope.

  51. You don't need to do that either.

  52. I fall into that camp.

  53. And the baptism with which you were baptized, that still stands.

  54. You know, baptism is important and good, but it raises some questions, doesn't it?

  55. So what's going to follow, I'm going to give you four biblical reasons of why I get baptized.

  56. And as we go through those reasons, I'm going to kind of address some of the questions that I've raised along the way.

  57. Our problem as an evangelical church in the States is not that we take baptism too seriously.

  58. Our problem is that we don't take baptism serious enough.

  59. So here's reason number one of why get baptized.

  60. The pattern of baptism.

  61. If you would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  62. In your pew Bible, it's on page 961.

  63. The question I want to answer right now, is there a normal pattern in the New Testament of people being baptized?

  64. And the answer is yes.

  65. And it starts with Jesus.

  66. So in Matthew chapter 3, Jesus himself is baptized.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  67. John the Baptist is baptizing with a baptism of repentance.

  68. And Jesus goes out to him to be baptized.

  69. Listen to what Matthew writes.

  70. This is 3.13 through 17.

  71. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him.

  72. John would have prevented him saying, I need to be baptized by you and you come to me.

  73. But Jesus answered him, let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.

  74. Then John the Baptist consented.

  75. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water.

  76. And behold, the heavens were opened to him.

  77. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him.

  78. And behold, a voice from heaven said, this is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.

  79. This is Jesus' public start of his ministry.

  80. Jesus is going public with his teaching ministry at this point.

  81. But it also provides us a model, an example to follow.

  82. Now you might, those people who are pretty sharp in the room, you might be thinking, wait, time out.

  83. Why is Jesus getting baptized for a baptism of repentance?

  84. Because we know Jesus never sinned.

  85. Why would he need to do that?

  86. Well, I'm not sure what all it means, but Jesus says to fulfill all righteousness.

  87. And so I take that to mean as at least setting an example for anyone who would call on him as Savior and Lord and follow him.

  88. What we see here is the beginning of a pattern with Jesus himself being baptized.

  89. So if you become a Christian and you want to follow Jesus, you will begin by following him in baptism.

  90. Now there's more of a pattern we see in the book of Acts.

  91. A-C-T-S.

  92. Acts follows the gospel of John and it's the authorized history of how the early church started and expanded.

  93. In Acts 1-8, Jesus tells his disciples in Jerusalem that they need to wait for the power of the Holy Spirit to be his witnesses in Jerusalem.

  94. And then out to Judea and then further out to Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  95. And so the book of Acts follows that pattern from Acts 1 to Acts 28.

  96. And so as we see as the book of Acts unfolds, various people are hearing the gospel preached and they're responding in repentance and faith.

  97. And then soon after they are baptized.

  98. And so we see this being applied to men and women, boys and girls, rich and poor, ethnicities of all sorts, Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles, and then all sorts of different Gentiles.

  99. People with different education levels, different positions of influence.

  100. As the gospel is proclaimed, as it's going out to the ends of the earth, the gospel is proclaimed, people respond in repentance and faith.

  101. And then they are baptized.

  102. They're not baptized first and then they become Christians.

  103. No, they become Christians first in repentance and faith and then are baptized.

  104. It's a normalized sequence.

  105. Gospel proclaimed, gospel heard, gospel responded to in repentance and faith, and then they're baptized.

  106. Which we'll come to find out, it's a little picture of the gospel.

  107. We see this in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  108. Peter preaches this sermon.

  109. Over 3,000 people hear the gospel.

  110. They respond.

  111. And they're like, what do we do?

  112. We're caught to the heart.

  113. And he says, repent and believe.

  114. And that day, 3,000 people were baptized.

  115. Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  116. Philip is in Samaria.

  117. And he preaches the gospel.

  118. Men and women respond.

  119. And they're immediately baptized.

  120. Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  121. Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch.

  122. Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  123. Paul and Silas, they're having this worship service.

  124. In jail.

  125. There's this huge earthquake.

  126. The jailer runs out.

  127. The Philippian jailer runs out thinking that all of these prisoners are gone and he's going to die.

  128. And Paul and Silas is like, don't, don't, we're still here.

  129. And then he, they lead him to Christ.

  130. He believes in the Lord Jesus and he's saved.

  131. It turns out that Paul and Silas go to the jailer's home.

  132. They clean him up and his whole household believes.

  133. And all of them are baptized on that very day.

  134. Baptized at once.

  135. Acts 18.

  136. Corinth.

  137. Crispus.

  138. Hears the gospel and is immediately baptized.

  139. So all I want to show you here is there is a pattern.

  140. In the New Testament, especially in Acts, starting with Jesus.

  141. There's a pattern of baptism in the New Testament.

  142. And it goes gospel proclaimed, gospel heard, gospel responded to repentance and faith.

  143. And then baptism.

  144. Which now brings us to the second reason.

  145. The first reason, there's a pattern.

  146. The second reason, the command of baptism.

  147. If you would open up, turn to Matthew chapter 28, 18 through 19.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  148. It's in the back.

  149. It's the very last chapter of Matthew.

  150. Matthew.

  151. It's on page 993 of your pew Bible.

  152. So Jesus has been raised from the dead.

  153. He's gathered his disciples in Galilee.

  154. And he commissions them.

  155. He starts by saying, all authority in heaven and earth have been given to me.

  156. That's a claim to him being king of kings and lord of lords.

  157. And then he tells them, go therefore, make disciples of all nations.

  158. Take the gospel to all people.

  159. Proclaim the gospel of what I have done.

  160. My death and resurrection to all.

  161. And as they're going and proclaiming, they are to baptize.

  162. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  163. And teaching them to observe all that I've commanded you.

  164. And so they are to be baptizing and teaching those who respond in repentance and faith.

  165. Now, let me ask you this.

  166. Is Jesus giving his disciples an option?

  167. If you guys feel like it, go.

  168. And if you go and you've got time, would you consider baptizing people who respond?

  169. And those people who may respond, if you've got time to go,

  170. would you consider maybe teaching them all that I commanded?

  171. This is not an option.

  172. This is commission.

  173. This is command.

  174. This is what the church should be doing as we proclaim Christ.

  175. And people respond.

  176. We baptize them.

  177. We teach them.

  178. Baptism is when a new believer goes public with their faith in Jesus Christ.

  179. Let me just clarify something.

  180. So we're not, I don't want anybody mishearing me.

  181. Baptism isn't a command we obey in order to become a Christian, to be saved.

  182. That's flipped.

  183. When we get saved.

  184. When we get saved.

  185. When we believe in what Jesus has done for us.

  186. Then we get baptized out of obedience.

  187. It is the sign of our salvation.

  188. It's the pattern in Acts.

  189. So the church is to baptize anyone who, upon hearing the gospel,

  190. repents and believes.

  191. And believes.

  192. So in Acts 2, Peter preaches this phenomenal sermon, one of the best sermons ever preached.

  193. It's all about Jesus Christ.

  194. And then thousands of Jews who are in Jerusalem at that moment say,

  195. what do we do?

  196. How do we respond?

  197. Verse 31 and verse 38, Peter says, repent and be baptized every one of you.

  198. And in your ear, you're like, why did he leave out believe?

  199. Why didn't he say, repent and believe and be baptized?

  200. Baptized.

  201. Well, think about that repent as just shorthand for conversion.

  202. Just shorthand.

  203. He's just saying, turn from your sin, turn to Christ, and then be baptized.

  204. And that is further kind of confirmed in verse 41, where Luke says,

  205. and those who received his word were baptized, all 3,000.

  206. Could you imagine that?

  207. March 29th, 2026, we have 3,000 people signed up to be baptized.

  208. That would be crazy.

  209. That would be crazy just to try to baptize 3,000 people with all sorts of space and water available.

  210. Could you imagine that?

  211. What I just want you to see here is,

  212. Peter doesn't make baptism optional for those 3,000 who believe.

  213. It's a step of obedience.

  214. It's a necessary step for those who believe in Jesus as Savior and Lord.

  215. Our problem is that we don't take baptism.

  216. We don't take baptism too seriously.

  217. Did I just say that right?

  218. We don't take it seriously enough.

  219. If you're a non-Christian in the room,

  220. you need to be converted before you're baptized.

  221. You need to become a Christian.

  222. And then after you become a Christian,

  223. you're baptized.

  224. So it's what's coming.

  225. It's good.

  226. This raises a rather delicate issue.

  227. Here's the question.

  228. Were you genuinely saved when you were baptized?

  229. Maybe you were an infant.

  230. Maybe you were a child,

  231. a young adult.

  232. And you've come to realize that you were not a Christian when that happened.

  233. Do you know what you call it when a non-Christian is baptized?

  234. Do you know what you call that?

  235. A false baptism.

  236. That's not a baptism.

  237. If a non-Christian is baptized,

  238. that is not an actual baptism.

  239. And I'm going to spell that out for the next point a little bit.

  240. But for now,

  241. we just need to say it's a false baptism.

  242. However well intended,

  243. it did not actually reflect

  244. what was actually going on spiritually within that person.

  245. It wasn't a baptism.

  246. And so if you were not a Christian when you were baptized,

  247. you don't need to be re-baptized.

  248. You need to be truly baptized.

  249. That's your next step.

  250. That's going to require some humility.

  251. But that's okay.

  252. You're going to obey the command.

  253. You're going to live in reality.

  254. It's going to,

  255. reality will then reflect,

  256. your baptism will reflect what the reality is.

  257. And if this is where you're at,

  258. you've got an opportunity coming up

  259. at the end of next month.

  260. So this is the second reason,

  261. the command of baptism.

  262. It's commanded.

  263. The third reason

  264. is the symbol of baptism.

  265. And this is going to help you understand

  266. why we need to avoid false baptisms.

  267. Because a baptism is incredibly significant

  268. in what it symbolizes,

  269. what it points to.

  270. So the symbol of baptism,

  271. and I'd like you to turn to the book of Romans,

  272. chapter six, one through five.

  273. It's on page 1120 of your pew Bible.

  274. But let me just start by saying,

  275. baptism is a little parable.

  276. Better yet, baptism,

  277. someone's baptism,

  278. is a lived parable.

  279. A lived parable of what happens

  280. the moment of your conversion.

  281. And what happens at the moment of your conversion

  282. is something supernatural.

  283. When you believed in Jesus Christ,

  284. at that moment you believed,

  285. the scriptures tell us,

  286. and we're going to see it right here,

  287. you were united to Christ

  288. in his death and his resurrection,

  289. and it changes everything.

  290. So looking at Romans chapter six,

  291. one through four,

  292. and then verse five

  293. is where you start hearing union language.

  294. What shall we say then?

  295. Are we to continue in sin

  296. that grace may abound?

  297. By no means.

  298. How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  299. What is he talking about?

  300. We who died to sin.

  301. Do you not know that all of us

  302. who've been baptized into Christ Jesus

  303. were baptized into his death?

  304. What does he mean by baptism?

  305. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death

  306. in order that,

  307. just as Christ was raised from the dead

  308. by the glory of the Father,

  309. we too might walk in newness of life.

  310. Verse five is the explainer.

  311. For if we have been united with him

  312. in a death like his,

  313. that's what baptism points to,

  314. we shall certainly be united with him

  315. in a resurrection like his.

  316. That's what baptism points to.

  317. Baptism is a lived parable.

  318. It's an act.

  319. It's acting out publicly

  320. what has taken place within you spiritually.

  321. And this is where I'm coming down to the prop.

  322. The waters of baptism.

  323. Let's say we're,

  324. it's March 29th.

  325. It's not,

  326. we baptize indoors in a horse trough.

  327. FYI.

  328. But it's gonna have full of water.

  329. And so at that point,

  330. I'm gonna ask one of the baptism,

  331. baptism candidates,

  332. someone who wants to be baptized,

  333. hey, come on out.

  334. So they come out

  335. and I ask them two questions.

  336. I ask them,

  337. have you put your faith in Jesus Christ alone

  338. for the forgiveness of your sins

  339. and the promise of eternal life?

  340. Yes,

  341. they say,

  342. from their toes.

  343. And then I ask them,

  344. is it your intent

  345. to follow Jesus all of your life,

  346. no matter what,

  347. for the rest of your days?

  348. And they say,

  349. yes.

  350. And then what I say is,

  351. well,

  352. based upon your public profession of faith,

  353. I mean,

  354. it takes guts

  355. to say that in front of a room full of people.

  356. Based upon your public profession of faith,

  357. I baptized you

  358. in the name of the Father

  359. and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

  360. right from Matthew 28.

  361. And then you'll hear me say this.

  362. I'll be holding them

  363. and I'll say this.

  364. As they're going down,

  365. I'll say,

  366. united with Christ in his death,

  367. splash.

  368. They're under the water.

  369. Did you hear what just happened?

  370. So they're already united with Christ

  371. in his death and resurrection.

  372. That happened at their conversion.

  373. But when I'm putting them in the water,

  374. that's what I'm saying

  375. because that's what it symbolizes.

  376. So united with Christ in his death,

  377. splash.

  378. The joke is five minutes later,

  379. I pull them out of the water

  380. and when they're coming out of the water,

  381. you'll hear me say,

  382. they'll hear me say,

  383. and raised with Christ

  384. to newness of life.

  385. So what baptism symbolizes

  386. is our union with Christ.

  387. They are going public

  388. with saying,

  389. I've been united with Christ

  390. in his death and resurrection.

  391. It's a little gospel proclamation

  392. lived out in them.

  393. Is that pretty cool?

  394. Well, that's pretty cool.

  395. And that's why

  396. we've got to be very careful

  397. and thoughtful

  398. in whom we baptize.

  399. What they're saying is,

  400. I was once in the domain of darkness,

  401. but now I've been transferred

  402. into the kingdom of the beloved son

  403. because I've been united with Christ

  404. in his death,

  405. in his resurrection.

  406. And so that's what each person

  407. is saying,

  408. will be saying,

  409. think about it like this.

  410. Think of our baptism service

  411. at the end of March

  412. and then the baptism service,

  413. Lord willing,

  414. if you should tarry,

  415. we do in the future.

  416. They're a series of one act plays.

  417. Again and again,

  418. people saying,

  419. lived parables,

  420. I've been united with Christ

  421. in his death and resurrection.

  422. That's how I've been saved.

  423. It's incredibly meaningful.

  424. And if you're the person

  425. being baptized,

  426. you'll never forget it.

  427. Here's what this means for us.

  428. Our problem

  429. is not

  430. that we take baptism too seriously.

  431. Our problem is that

  432. we don't take baptism

  433. serious enough.

  434. And have you ever wondered,

  435. well,

  436. why is that?

  437. I think

  438. there's this fear

  439. among Protestants

  440. of confusing

  441. a salvation by faith

  442. with a salvation by works.

  443. And so we're a little reluctant

  444. to talk about baptism

  445. as a command

  446. and as extremely important.

  447. And the way we resolve that

  448. is not to stop talking

  449. about baptism,

  450. but it's actually

  451. to talk about the sequence

  452. to make clear,

  453. no,

  454. you're,

  455. you're,

  456. you're,

  457. you're saved first,

  458. then you're baptized.

  459. We don't diminish

  460. the importance

  461. of these things.

  462. Are you starting

  463. to feel the weight,

  464. the theological weight

  465. of the symbol

  466. of baptism?

  467. This is a lived out

  468. parable

  469. and it's making,

  470. making a huge claim.

  471. There's,

  472. people are saying,

  473. apart from Christ,

  474. I was dead to God

  475. and alive to sin,

  476. but now that I've been

  477. united to Christ,

  478. I'm dead to sin

  479. and alive to God,

  480. all by his grace.

  481. Now,

  482. when you see someone

  483. then baptized,

  484. baptized,

  485. there's a very

  486. appropriate expectation.

  487. It's a New Testament

  488. expectation.

  489. It's not being judgy.

  490. It's just following

  491. where the New Testament

  492. goes.

  493. Because if someone

  494. is truly united

  495. with Christ

  496. in his death

  497. and his resurrection,

  498. one would then

  499. expect

  500. that that person,

  501. their desires for God

  502. are going to increase.

  503. their cravings

  504. for God's word

  505. and to obey

  506. their God's word

  507. is going to increase.

  508. Their love

  509. for God's people

  510. and the lost

  511. is going to increase.

  512. Their commitment

  513. to advance

  514. the kingdom

  515. is going to increase.

  516. It's a very powerful moment.

  517. When someone is baptized,

  518. that's not the moment

  519. they've been saved.

  520. that's the moment

  521. they've gone public.

  522. And it's worth celebrating.

  523. Now,

  524. there's two mistakes

  525. we must avoid.

  526. And parents,

  527. I'd really like you

  528. to pay attention

  529. carefully now.

  530. Because,

  531. because parents,

  532. if you're raising children,

  533. you are,

  534. you are on the front lines.

  535. God bless you.

  536. And,

  537. and if you have children

  538. who are expressing

  539. an interest

  540. in,

  541. in the things of God

  542. and even being baptized,

  543. it puts you in a position

  544. where you need

  545. to make some decisions.

  546. You need to be

  547. shepherding your children

  548. very well.

  549. And so,

  550. there's two mistakes

  551. we must avoid

  552. and here they are.

  553. Mistake number one,

  554. we baptize people

  555. too early,

  556. too quickly.

  557. We,

  558. we,

  559. we baptize people

  560. with a false baptism

  561. because they're not

  562. genuinely saved.

  563. Just because

  564. someone wants

  565. to be baptized

  566. does not mean

  567. that they should

  568. be baptized.

  569. What,

  570. what we need

  571. to be listening for

  572. is what's called

  573. a credible

  574. profession

  575. of faith.

  576. Has this

  577. person,

  578. however old

  579. they are,

  580. have they

  581. recognized

  582. their sinfulness

  583. and their

  584. desperate need

  585. in the one

  586. and only

  587. Savior,

  588. Jesus Christ?

  589. Are they able

  590. to communicate

  591. that at any level?

  592. now,

  593. for parents,

  594. I've been there,

  595. the challenge

  596. is,

  597. you're kind of like,

  598. I don't quite

  599. know.

  600. Well,

  601. the church

  602. can really help

  603. and the church

  604. can help in two ways,

  605. both informally

  606. and formally,

  607. informally

  608. and formally.

  609. Informally,

  610. let's say that

  611. you have a child

  612. that's expressing,

  613. they're 13 years old

  614. and they're expressing

  615. an interest

  616. in being baptized.

  617. that's good

  618. that they're interested

  619. in that.

  620. Informally,

  621. go to some

  622. of your friends,

  623. go to some

  624. of your brothers

  625. and sisters

  626. in the Lord

  627. who know you

  628. and know your family.

  629. They know your children

  630. and you're like,

  631. hey,

  632. so-and-so

  633. has expressed interest

  634. in being baptized

  635. and I can go

  636. either way.

  637. I want to err

  638. on saying yes,

  639. but I'm not sure.

  640. What do you think?

  641. Get their input.

  642. Let's do it.

  643. Let's do this together.

  644. Now,

  645. that's the informal

  646. side of things.

  647. The formal side

  648. of things

  649. is this.

  650. Every person

  651. who wants to be baptized

  652. here at Christ the King Church,

  653. they complete

  654. a Bible study

  655. on baptism

  656. in which they

  657. write their testimony.

  658. They got to make

  659. their conversion clear.

  660. And then after

  661. doing that,

  662. they meet with

  663. one of the pastors

  664. who walks through

  665. with them

  666. to be listening

  667. for a credible

  668. profession of faith.

  669. Now,

  670. we're doing this

  671. all together

  672. in order to

  673. avoid this

  674. first mistake

  675. of being

  676. a premature

  677. false baptism.

  678. We don't want

  679. to do that.

  680. Do I have an amen?

  681. We do want to do it.

  682. We don't want

  683. to do that.

  684. But we also

  685. don't want to make

  686. the second mistake.

  687. And the second mistake

  688. is this.

  689. We baptize people

  690. too late.

  691. We withhold

  692. this good,

  693. important,

  694. and commanded

  695. step.

  696. And we

  697. hold it back

  698. because of some

  699. kind of

  700. unsubstantiated

  701. fear.

  702. And so,

  703. if there are

  704. sufficient grounds,

  705. we want to be

  706. able to

  707. say yes.

  708. So,

  709. what this

  710. means is this.

  711. A lot of people,

  712. a lot of Christians,

  713. they're like,

  714. tell me an age.

  715. Give me an age.

  716. Please just

  717. say

  718. that you have

  719. to be 45

  720. before you

  721. can be

  722. baptized.

  723. Now,

  724. the thing

  725. about having

  726. an age

  727. is that

  728. it can

  729. be helpful

  730. in some

  731. degree,

  732. but

  733. it boils

  734. down to

  735. being not

  736. really quite

  737. helpful.

  738. The harder

  739. way is the

  740. better way.

  741. You know

  742. what the

  743. harder way

  744. is?

  745. You enter

  746. into

  747. conversations

  748. with your

  749. children.

  750. You actually

  751. explore

  752. their desire

  753. of whether

  754. or not

  755. they want

  756. to,

  757. that they're

  758. actually

  759. saved,

  760. and why

  761. they want

  762. to be

  763. baptized.

  764. What we're

  765. looking for

  766. is the

  767. Goldilocks

  768. moment.

  769. Remember

  770. Goldilocks?

  771. The bowls

  772. of porridge.

  773. First bowl

  774. was too

  775. cold,

  776. and the

  777. next bowl

  778. was too

  779. hot,

  780. and then

  781. the next

  782. bowl,

  783. the third

  784. bowl,

  785. was just

  786. right.

  787. We don't

  788. want to

  789. baptize

  790. too early.

  791. We don't

  792. want to

  793. baptize

  794. too late.

  795. We want

  796. to baptize

  797. just right.

  798. When a

  799. person,

  800. when they

  801. have a

  802. credible

  803. profession

  804. of faith,

  805. and they're

  806. starting to

  807. demonstrate

  808. some things

  809. that are

  810. only attributed

  811. to the

  812. Spirit of

  813. God,

  814. that's the

  815. sweet spot.

  816. And that

  817. doesn't mean

  818. it's the

  819. same age

  820. for everybody.

  821. You may

  822. even have

  823. seven children

  824. in your

  825. home,

  826. and you

  827. have an

  828. array of

  829. times when

  830. your children

  831. were baptized,

  832. baptized,

  833. because you've

  834. been like

  835. a good

  836. parent,

  837. paying attention

  838. to each

  839. one.

  840. So these

  841. two mistakes

  842. we must

  843. avoid,

  844. and we're

  845. going to

  846. avoid them

  847. by seeking

  848. God's

  849. word,

  850. trusting in

  851. kind of the

  852. wisdom that

  853. he can

  854. provide,

  855. and seeking

  856. help in

  857. that as

  858. well.

  859. It will

  860. strengthen

  861. our church,

  862. and it will

  863. help us to

  864. avoid false

  865. baptisms,

  866. and help us

  867. to celebrate

  868. genuine

  869. baptisms.

  870. Remember,

  871. this is a

  872. symbol,

  873. and it's

  874. a symbol of

  875. incredible

  876. significance,

  877. that we're

  878. talking about

  879. people being

  880. united with

  881. Christ,

  882. and his

  883. death,

  884. and his

  885. resurrection,

  886. and we

  887. want to

  888. take the

  889. right,

  890. appropriate

  891. steps to

  892. that end,

  893. but we're

  894. not going to

  895. be ruled by

  896. fear.

  897. We're going

  898. to be

  899. walking by

  900. faith.

  901. So that's

  902. the third

  903. reason of

  904. why get

  905. baptized,

  906. the symbol

  907. of baptism.

  908. The fourth

  909. reason is

  910. the PSA

  911. of baptism.

  912. The PSA.

  913. Do you

  914. know what a

  915. public service

  916. announcement is?

  917. A public

  918. service announcement

  919. will both

  920. warn and

  921. help.

  922. Back in

  923. the day,

  924. before there

  925. were streaming

  926. services,

  927. you would tune

  928. into the

  929. 10 o'clock

  930. news during

  931. the summertime,

  932. and one of

  933. the anchors

  934. would say,

  935. it's 10

  936. p.m.,

  937. do you

  938. know where

  939. your children

  940. are?

  941. It's a

  942. public service

  943. announcement.

  944. Because the

  945. warning is,

  946. warning of the

  947. dangers that

  948. befall unsupervised

  949. kids during the

  950. summertime late at

  951. night.

  952. Not that anyone in

  953. the room was up

  954. to no good in the

  955. summertime when they

  956. were a kid.

  957. But it also

  958. helps remind

  959. parents to care

  960. for their kids.

  961. baptism is a

  962. public service

  963. announcement of

  964. a different

  965. kind.

  966. Who's it

  967. for?

  968. It starts with

  969. the one being

  970. baptized.

  971. How so?

  972. Well, in

  973. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 10:32–33

  974. 10, verses

  975. 32 through

  976. 33, Jesus

  977. says something

  978. that is

  979. incredibly

  980. helpful.

  981. in where

  982. baptism becomes

  983. a way to

  984. apply it.

  985. So Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  986. chapter 10,

  987. 32 through

  988. 33, page

  989. 969 of

  990. your pew

  991. Bible.

  992. Just as

  993. Jesus speaking,

  994. so everyone

  995. who acknowledges

  996. me before men,

  997. I also will

  998. acknowledge before

  999. my Father who

  1000. is in heaven.

  1001. But whoever

  1002. denies me before

  1003. men, I also

  1004. will deny before

  1005. my Father in

  1006. heaven.

  1007. And what

  1008. baptism does,

  1009. among other

  1010. things, is it

  1011. helps a new

  1012. Christian, a new

  1013. believer, generally

  1014. speaking, to go

  1015. public with their

  1016. faith in Jesus

  1017. Christ, to

  1018. acknowledge him

  1019. before men.

  1020. Something that he

  1021. delights in.

  1022. And so on the

  1023. 29th of next

  1024. month, you're

  1025. going to have

  1026. people being

  1027. baptized, and

  1028. what they're

  1029. essentially saying

  1030. is this,

  1031. hey, y'all,

  1032. not only have

  1033. been united

  1034. with Christ

  1035. in his death

  1036. and resurrection,

  1037. booyah, but

  1038. I delight in

  1039. my King and

  1040. fear him more

  1041. than anyone in

  1042. this room.

  1043. What he

  1044. thinks matters

  1045. most, and I

  1046. am glad to

  1047. acknowledge him

  1048. before men.

  1049. Booyah!

  1050. God, that

  1051. delights our

  1052. King.

  1053. And so this

  1054. PSA, man, it

  1055. is good for

  1056. those who are

  1057. being baptized,

  1058. and they'll

  1059. never forget

  1060. it.

  1061. I still remember

  1062. the day that I

  1063. was baptized as a

  1064. nine-year-old in

  1065. the backyard of a

  1066. church member of

  1067. Valley Community

  1068. Baptist Church in

  1069. Avon, Connecticut.

  1070. Never forget it.

  1071. the next group

  1072. of people that

  1073. benefits is the

  1074. church.

  1075. Christ the King

  1076. Church.

  1077. It's a PSA for

  1078. us.

  1079. Not only will it

  1080. remind us of our

  1081. being united with

  1082. Christ and Christ's

  1083. death and

  1084. resurrection, where

  1085. we're like, oh

  1086. yeah!

  1087. But there's this

  1088. other thing that

  1089. happens.

  1090. Have you heard of

  1091. acoustic resonance

  1092. before?

  1093. There's this thing

  1094. called Christocentric

  1095. resonance.

  1096. Acoustic resonance

  1097. is when you have

  1098. two grand pianos on

  1099. a stage like this,

  1100. and they're both

  1101. tuned, and on

  1102. one, you start

  1103. tapping center C or

  1104. middle C, ding,

  1105. ding, ding, ding,

  1106. ding, ding, ding,

  1107. ding, ding, ding,

  1108. ding, and the other

  1109. grand piano, center C

  1110. starts humming.

  1111. Hmm.

  1112. Because of the

  1113. acoustic resonance,

  1114. the frequency, the

  1115. sound frequencies

  1116. going between them.

  1117. That's what

  1118. Christocentric

  1119. resonance is during

  1120. a baptism service.

  1121. When someone goes

  1122. public for their

  1123. faith, they're like

  1124. tapping center

  1125. Jesus, ding, ding,

  1126. ding, ding, ding,

  1127. ding, ding.

  1128. I've been crucified

  1129. with Christ.

  1130. And for those of

  1131. us who are

  1132. genuinely born of

  1133. God in the

  1134. audience, we're

  1135. like, yes, yes!

  1136. It's Christocentric

  1137. resonance in the

  1138. room during a

  1139. baptism.

  1140. And that's why I

  1141. want to say,

  1142. schedule it.

  1143. Reschedule around

  1144. it.

  1145. Come and be

  1146. encouraged and

  1147. strengthened to

  1148. see what God is

  1149. doing in brothers

  1150. and sisters in

  1151. Christ.

  1152. You will be

  1153. encouraged.

  1154. You will hear

  1155. testimonies of

  1156. people coming to

  1157. Christ and you're

  1158. going to be like,

  1159. amen!

  1160. How glorious he

  1161. uses different

  1162. means!

  1163. But it's the same

  1164. Jesus being united

  1165. to his death and

  1166. resurrection.

  1167. Here's the other

  1168. benefit of it.

  1169. Think about this.

  1170. Members of Christ

  1171. the King Church.

  1172. Think about it like

  1173. this.

  1174. Let's say we see

  1175. someone baptized on

  1176. the 29th.

  1177. And then a couple

  1178. months later,

  1179. they're like, I

  1180. want to become a

  1181. member of Christ the

  1182. King Church.

  1183. Do you know what

  1184. you're going to be

  1185. able to do?

  1186. You're going to be

  1187. able to like, yes

  1188. and amen.

  1189. We did a little

  1190. Christocentric

  1191. resonance.

  1192. I heard their

  1193. testimony.

  1194. This is genuine.

  1195. Of course, let's

  1196. welcome them in.

  1197. It has this church

  1198. building commitment

  1199. effect.

  1200. And so we're going

1201. to try to do some

  1202. more adjusting of

  1203. our practice so that

  1204. this happens more.

  1205. There's one more

  1206. group of people.

  1207. It's to non-Christians.

  1208. Let's say on the 29th,

  1209. those being baptized

  1210. bring non-Christians

  1211. into the sanctuary.

  1212. That's great.

  1213. But while they're

  1214. watching these people

  1215. baptized, they might

1216. be saying, this is a

  1217. little strange.

  1218. This is a little

  1219. weird.

  1220. This is kind of

  1221. some kind of

  1222. spiritual right or

  1223. something like that.

  1224. But then they'll say

1225. like, but I get what

  1226. they're saying.

  1227. I get that they're

  1228. saying this baptism

  1229. thing.

  1230. They're saying I'm

  1231. with Jesus now and

  1232. I'm with the people

  1233. of Jesus now.

  1234. But you know what

  1235. they're going to be

  1236. experiencing?

  1237. A lack of

  1238. Christocentric

  1239. resonance.

  1240. Like, I don't get

  1241. it.

  1242. What's up with

  1243. that?

  1244. But that is

  1245. exactly what we

  1246. want them

  1247. asking.

  1248. What does this

  1249. person know that I

  1250. don't?

  1251. Why would they do

  1252. this and go public

  1253. like this?

  1254. That Jesus, that's

  1255. real business to

  1256. them.

  1257. I wonder what that

  1258. means for me.

1259. And so we have an

  1260. opportunity to start

  1261. proclaiming Christ in

  1262. these little lived

  1263. parables to non-Christians

  1264. and then following that

  1265. to tell these non-Christians

1266. about the wrath of God

  1267. to come and how

  1268. Jesus alone is their

1269. only hope in face of

  1270. that.

  1271. Baptisms are a public

  1272. service announcement.

  1273. They both warn and

  1274. help.

  1275. They are good.

  1276. So why get baptized?

  1277. I've given you four

  1278. reasons this morning.

  1279. Pattern, command,

  1280. symbol, public service

  1281. announcement.

  1282. Our problem is not

  1283. that we take baptism

  1284. too seriously.

1285. Our problem is that we

  1286. don't take baptism

  1287. serious enough.

  1288. Think about this.

  1289. Baptisms reflect

  1290. our Lord Jesus Christ

  1291. building his church

1292. one union at a time.

  1293. If you're not a Christian

1294. your next step is not

  1295. baptism.

  1296. It's conversion.

1297. And I'd be happy to talk

  1298. to you about that.

  1299. If you've recently become

  1300. a Christian or you've

  1301. realized that your

1302. baptism when you were an

  1303. infant or a child was a

  1304. false baptism, don't

  1305. freak out.

  1306. Or you've been a

  1307. Christian for a long

  1308. time and you've never

  1309. gotten baptized, don't

  1310. flip.

  1311. It's time to get

  1312. baptized.

1313. And so what you can do

1314. is you can pick up a

  1315. Bible study on baptism.

1316. It's out there at the

  1317. Connect Center.

1318. You can grab it as you

  1319. go.

1320. Sign up to be baptized

1321. and then we'll set up an

  1322. appointment with one of

  1323. our pastors.

  1324. Christ the King Church.

  1325. Would you please get

  1326. this on your schedule?

1327. We think, we trust that

1328. this is going to be

  1329. good.

1330. That this is going to be

  1331. Christocentric resonance

1332. happening in the room at

  1333. four o'clock on the 29th.

  1334. You'll be encouraged.

  1335. And remember, our problem

1336. is not that we take

  1337. baptism too seriously.

1338. Our problem is that we

  1339. don't take it seriously

  1340. enough.

  1341. Let's pray together.

1342. God in heaven, thank you

  1343. for giving us this

  1344. beautiful, beautiful

  1345. rite, this beautiful

  1346. symbol.

1347. And we pray that God,

1348. you would give us more

  1349. and more occasions to

  1350. baptize people who have

1351. been united to Christ in

  1352. his death and

  1353. resurrection.

1354. And we ask that God, you

1355. would use your word now

1356. to compel the brothers and

1357. the sisters in the room

1358. who need to take this

  1359. step.

1360. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1361. Amen.
