  1. Would you open up your Bibles to Mark chapter 16, verses 1-8.

    Mark 16:1–8

  2. It's on page 1014 of your pew Bible.

  3. !

  4. I can still remember driving our red 1991 Honda Civic 4-door from Riverside Hospital

  5. to our apartment on Doris Avenue.

  6. My young bride, Jenny, sitting shotgun.

  7. And in the back, strapped into our car seat, was our firstborn, Abby.

  8. All seven pounds of her.

  9. We were driving home from the hospital where she had just been delivered.

  10. We safely arrived at our apartment, carried her into our living room,

  11. set her down before our couch.

  12. Jenny and I sat on the couch.

  13. We were looking at this seven-pound little girl, and we were in stunned silence.

  14. Because we were experiencing a number of emotions.

  15. Fear.

  16. Oh, Lord, help us not mess this thing up.

  17. Trembling.

  18. A little shaking.

  19. A little astonishment.

  20. Can you believe she's ours?

  21. Joy.

  22. Mixed with wonder.

  23. But in that stunned silence, we had both drawn the same conclusion.

  24. Our lives have been dramatically changed.

  25. There's no going back.

  26. The Gospel of Mark ends with three women outside of an empty tomb, seized by fear and astonishment.

  27. They were trembling.

  28. They were literally shaking, stunned silence.

  29. They weren't saying a word to anyone.

  30. I mean, this is how the Gospel of Mark closes.

  31. There's some debate on where it closes, but I think this is the best place.

  32. The question is, what happened?

  33. Why were they sitting outside the tomb in stunned silence?

  34. I mean, these three women had been following Jesus for at least two to three years, giving

  35. of themselves, sharing meals, seeing His miracles take place, listening to His teaching.

  36. What are they doing outside the tomb in stunned silence?

  37. Well, here we are 2,000 years after this event.

  38. And we too are standing outside the empty tomb.

  39. We too need to make sense of this empty tomb.

  40. Maybe you came into this building this morning, and you're...

  41. You're thinking, you know what?

  42. I don't know about this resurrection thing because dead people stay dead.

  43. It's how things roll.

  44. You subscribe to a naturalistic explanation of reality.

  45. I'm glad you're here.

  46. Or maybe you've come into this building, and you're like, I don't really have anything against

  47. Jesus.

  48. In fact, I do think that He died and was raised.

  49. But you know what?

  50. I really don't want to give up these things that I like doing that God doesn't want me

  51. doing.

  52. I don't really want to give those up.

  53. I'm glad you're here too.

  54. Maybe you're a Christian here, and you've been living in hiding.

  55. You've been isolating.

  56. You have kind of been avoiding other Christians because either something bad has happened with

  57. the church, or you're ashamed of yourself for something you're involved with.

  58. I'm glad that you're here.

  59. And if you're a Christian who's been running hard, I'm glad you're here too.

  60. You see, at the end of Mark 16, 16, 1 through 8, there is this extraordinary claim.

  61. It's a heavenly announcement.

  62. It's just three words.

  63. He is risen.

  64. And it changes everything.

  65. So let me read this account.

  66. And there are three scenes I want you to be looking for.

  67. Scene one is these three women approaching the tomb.

  68. Scene two are these three women in the tomb.

  69. And scene three are these three women outside of the tomb.

  70. So listen as I read.

  71. When the Sabbath was passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought

  72. spices so that they might anoint him, go and anoint him.

  73. And very early on, the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.

  74. And they were saying to one another, who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance

  75. of the tomb.

  76. And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away.

  77. It was very large.

  78. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white

  79. robe, and they were alarmed.

  80. And he said to them, do not be alarmed.

  81. You see Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.

  82. He has risen.

  83. He is not here.

  84. See the place where they laid him?

  85. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee.

  86. There you will see him just as he told you.

  87. And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them.

  88. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

  89. How do you make sense of this empty tomb?

  90. Well, let's look at this first scene.

  91. These three women approaching the tomb in verses one through four.

  92. So these three women are walking to the tomb.

  93. And this is the tomb in which Jesus' dead body has been laid three days earlier.

  94. So this is the third day since he had been crucified, dead, and buried.

  95. So who are these three women?

  96. Well, we're told their names.

  97. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome.

  98. And what you need to know about them is that they're not new to this whole account.

  99. If you look back at chapter 15, and you look at verses 40 and 41, we read this.

  100. Now this is just moments after Jesus has breathed his last.

  101. The centurion has observed this and has said,

  102. Surely, truly, this was the Son of God.

  103. And we read in verse 40,

  104. There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene,

  105. and Mary the mother of James the younger, and of Joseph, and Salome.

  106. And what we also learn in verse 41 is,

  107. When he was in Galilee, these women followed him and ministered to him.

  108. And there were also many other women who came up with him in Jerusalem.

  109. So these three women were followers of Jesus.

  110. For the last two to three years, they had been making meals for him.

  111. They had been helping him out financially.

  112. They had been listening to his teaching.

  113. They had been watching him perform miracles.

  114. They had shared a lot of life with him.

  115. But they've also seen him crucified.

  116. And two of the three had now seen where he was buried.

  117. In the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.

  118. Mary, the mother of James, is also the Mary of Joseph.

  119. She's actually the mother of Jesus.

  120. It's that Mary.

  121. Maybe you know her as the Virgin Mary.

  122. James and Joseph, well, those are Jesus' half-brothers.

  123. Born of Mary and Joseph.

  124. Of a different father than Jesus.

  125. She had been a follower of Jesus herself.

  126. Notice when this happens.

  127. We see who, now look at when.

  128. In verse 16, 1.

  129. When the Sabbath was passed.

  130. Now remember, in the Jewish mind,

  131. the Sabbath was the last day of the week.

  132. And it was on Saturday.

  133. So what has happened is,

  134. Friday and Saturday has passed.

  135. And now it's the first day of the week.

  136. Which is Sunday.

  137. And it was at sunrise.

  138. Have you heard of a sunrise Easter service?

  139. This is why there are sunrise Easter service.

  140. At sunrise.

  141. So it was the first day of the week on the Sabbath has passed.

  142. It is daybreak.

  143. And what I just want you to notice here is,

  144. Mark seems to be very interested in helping you know what day it is.

  145. He wants to make you sure,

  146. make sure you know,

  147. this isn't Friday the day that Jesus was crucified,

  148. nor is it Sabbath the Saturday,

  149. but this is the first day of the week.

  150. This is Sunday.

  151. Now we've got to ask the question,

  152. why does he want us to know that?

  153. In verse 1,

  154. we see what these women have come to do.

  155. They went to the tomb to anoint him with these spices.

  156. It's just part of the practice of Jewish burial rites

  157. back in the first century of preparing a body.

  158. They weren't able to fully prepare the body on Friday

  159. because technically the Sabbath starts at sundown on Friday.

  160. And so they had to wait.

  161. And so they have come in order to finish preparing the body.

  162. Now this gets at the state of mind that these three women are in.

  163. What are they expecting?

  164. They're expecting to find the corpse of Jesus Christ.

  165. They're expecting to find his body.

  166. They're going to the tomb to finish burial rites.

  167. So that goes to the state of mind that they were in.

  168. They were heading out to the tomb on early that Sunday morning

  169. expecting to find the one that they watched die

  170. and then they watched where his body was laid.

  171. And mind you,

  172. they also saw this massive stone

  173. rolled in front of the entrance of the tomb.

  174. Speaking of which,

  175. this tomb was the tomb

  176. of a guy named Joseph of Arimathea.

  177. If you look up in chapter 15, verse 43,

  178. we see a little bit more about who this guy is.

  179. Joseph of Arimathea,

  180. respected member of the council.

  181. That's the Sanhedrin,

  182. which means he had some influence in Jerusalem,

  183. who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God.

  184. That means he's a follower of Jesus.

  185. He took courage and went to Pilate

  186. and asked for the body of Jesus.

  187. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.

  188. And summoning the centurion,

  189. he asked him whether he was already dead.

  190. And when he learned that the centurion,

  191. that he was dead,

  192. he granted the corpse to Joseph.

  193. And Joseph bought a linen shroud

  194. and taking him down,

  195. wrapped him in the linen shroud

  196. and laid him in a tomb

  197. that had been cut out of the rock.

  198. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the rock.

  199. This Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy man,

  200. a follower of Jesus.

  201. And upon Jesus' death,

  202. he has Jesus' body taken down,

  203. wrapped it in a shroud,

  204. and then placed in his own tomb.

  205. This actually fulfills Isaiah 53, 9.

  206. There was no question that Jesus was actually dead.

  207. In fact, if you were listening,

  208. Pilate was surprised that Jesus had died so quickly.

  209. So he summons the centurion,

  210. most likely the centurion that had just announced,

  211. confessed,

  212. truly this was the son of God.

  213. And that centurion confirms that,

  214. in fact, he was dead.

  215. So they're going to a tomb

  216. that they know where it's at.

  217. And they're looking for Jesus' dead body

  218. to finish preparing it for burial.

  219. Now, let's just ask the question,

  220. why are they going there?

  221. Well, we've already talked about it.

  222. They're going to anoint his body.

  223. But there's another reason why.

  224. They loved him.

  225. These three women loved this man.

  226. They were grieving him.

  227. His death must have been an incredible shock.

  228. I'm guessing that they were in a state of

  229. just kind of that emotional numbness,

  230. where you're like,

  231. is this really happening?

  232. They're going about their duty

  233. because they love him.

  234. In verses three and four,

  235. as they are approaching the tomb,

  236. they remember something.

  237. They remember that stone

  238. that had been rolled in front

  239. of the entrance of the tomb.

  240. It was to keep out robbers and vermin.

  241. And then they start asking themselves the question,

  242. who will roll away the stone for us

  243. from the entrance of the tomb?

  244. Verse three.

  245. How are you going to get in?

  246. How are we going to finish

  247. preparing his body for burial?

  248. And then as they look up

  249. after asking the question,

  250. they behold something.

  251. The massive stone

  252. had already been rolled away.

  253. The tomb had been opened.

  254. Now, I'm guessing at this point,

  255. if these three women

  256. had heart monitors on them,

  257. maybe a smart watch,

  258. I think at this point,

  259. they would have been like,

  260. something's not,

  261. something's strange.

  262. Their heart rate

  263. would have started going up.

  264. I'm guessing they're asking this question.

  265. Who got here before us?

  266. Who opened up his tomb?

  267. What were they going to do?

  268. And so what we have here

  269. in this first scene

  270. is these three women

  271. approaching the tomb

  272. and they are expecting

  273. to find a corpse,

  274. the dead body of Jesus.

  275. Scene two is in verses five through seven.

  276. And this scene takes place

  277. inside the tomb.

  278. These three women enter the tomb

  279. in verse five

  280. and it would have been

  281. this hollowed out chamber.

  282. Most likely,

  283. they would have to step down

  284. into this chamber.

  285. And again,

  286. what were they expecting to find?

  287. The body of Jesus.

  288. And so when they don't find

  289. the body of Jesus,

  290. they are surprised

  291. to find a young man.

  292. A young man wearing white robes

  293. which are reflective

  294. of holiness and purity.

  295. These white robes reflect

  296. where this young man

  297. hails from.

  298. This young man

  299. is an angel.

  300. And when these women come in,

  301. this young man

  302. is sitting off

  303. to the right of the platform

  304. where Jesus' body

  305. had been laid.

  306. And in verse five,

  307. you have one of the

  308. greatest understatements

  309. in the gospel of Mark,

  310. maybe in the New Testament.

  311. Let me just read it for you.

  312. And entering the tomb,

  313. they saw a young man

  314. sitting on the right side

  315. dressed in a white robe

  316. and they were alarmed.

  317. That is an understatement.

  318. Because if you

  319. were with those three women

  320. who had just gone

  321. into the tomb

  322. expecting to find

  323. the dead body of Jesus

  324. but find this young man

  325. in white

  326. with Jesus' body not there,

  327. you're going to be

  328. a little more

  329. than just kind of alarmed.

  330. I'm guessing you're going

  331. to be freaking out

  332. a little bit.

  333. So that heart monitor,

  334. that smart watch,

  335. their heartbeat

  336. just spiked.

  337. Did we come to the wrong tomb?

  338. Who's this guy?

  339. Where's the body of Jesus?

  340. What's interesting

  341. is that these three women

  342. are in the tomb

  343. emptied of the body

  344. of Jesus

  345. and it hasn't yet

  346. dawned on them

  347. what has really happened.

  348. Could you imagine

  349. where their heart rates are?

  350. In verse 6,

  351. the angel speaks

  352. among other things,

  353. angels are messengers of God.

  354. They deliver heavenly news

  355. from God

  356. and look what he says.

  357. He says,

  358. don't be afraid.

  359. In other words,

  360. I don't know

  361. if this is really true

  362. but this is where my mind goes.

  363. There is a reasonable explanation

  364. for all of this.

  365. Don't be alarmed.

  366. And he goes on to say,

  367. Jesus of Nazareth

  368. who was crucified,

  369. you got the right tomb.

  370. This Jesus of Nazareth

  371. who was crucified,

  372. this angel knew

  373. of Jesus' crucifixion

  374. and all of heavenly host

  375. knew that Jesus

  376. had been crucified

  377. and that he had died

  378. and they knew

  379. where he was buried.

  380. They were at the right tomb.

  381. He's like this Jesus

  382. of Nazareth

  383. who was crucified

  384. who you seek.

  385. I know why you're here.

  386. They're there to

  387. finish anointing

  388. the body

  389. of a crucified

  390. and dead Jesus.

  391. And then comes

  392. the heavenly explanation.

  393. This is the explanation

  394. from heaven,

  395. from a messenger of God

  396. of what has happened

  397. and why there is

  398. no body of Jesus.

  399. It's just three words.

  400. He has risen.

  401. He has risen.

  402. He's been raised

  403. from the dead.

  404. He is alive.

  405. He's overcome death.

  406. This is a miracle.

  407. This is God's doing.

  408. And then comes

  409. another understatement.

  410. See?

  411. See?

  412. Look at the place

  413. where they laid him.

  414. It's God

  415. he's not there.

  416. See?

  417. He is risen.

  418. You know,

  419. in Luke's account

  420. of this,

  421. the angel says,

  422. why do you seek

  423. the living

  424. among the dead?

  425. this angel

  426. has just announced

  427. the heavenly reason

  428. for the empty tomb.

  429. He is risen.

  430. He is alive.

  431. He's been brought

  432. back from the dead

  433. to life.

  434. Verse 7,

  435. the angel

  436. is not done speaking.

  437. He's got some

  438. kind of instructions

  439. for these three women.

  440. He goes on

  441. to tell them,

  442. go tell the disciples.

  443. especially Peter.

  444. Tell them

  445. that Jesus

  446. has gone before them

  447. to Galilee.

  448. There you will see him.

  449. Now,

  450. why that's important

  451. is all the disciples

  452. have abandoned Jesus

  453. and especially Peter.

  454. Be sure to tell them

  455. that Jesus

  456. has gone before them.

  457. And then he says,

  458. just as he told you.

  459. I think this is the moment

  460. where these women

  461. with racing hearts,

  462. I think this is the moment

  463. where their circuits

  464. start to pop.

  465. They're just like,

  466. there's just so much

  467. going on here.

  468. Just as he told you.

  469. I was thinking about this.

  470. It's like,

  471. how did the angel say that?

  472. Did he was like,

  473. okay,

  474. he's gone before you

  475. to Galilee.

  476. There you'll see him

  477. just as he told you.

  478. Or was it like,

  479. just as he told you.

  480. Wink, wink.

  481. he's referring to a passage

  482. in Mark chapter 14.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  483. In verse 26,

  484. Jesus has just

  485. instituted the Lord's Supper.

  486. Verse 26,

  487. they go out

  488. into the Mount of Olives

  489. after they've sung a hymn.

  490. And verse 27,

  491. Jesus said to them,

  492. you will all fall away

  493. for it is written,

  494. I will strike the shepherd

  495. and the sheep

  496. will be scattered.

  497. But after I am raised up,

  498. I will go before you

  499. to Galilee.

  500. That's what the angel

  501. is referencing.

  502. Just as he told you.

  503. Remember after the supper?

  504. Just as he told you.

  505. That he would be raised up

  506. and that he would go

  507. before you

  508. to Galilee.

  509. In that,

  510. verses 26 through 30

  511. in chapter 14,

  512. Jesus makes a number

  513. of statements

  514. that come to pass.

  515. In verse 27,

  516. he tells his disciples

  517. that they're all

  518. going to fall away

  519. from him.

  520. And in verse 50

  521. of chapter 14,

  522. they all fall away

  523. from him.

  524. In verses 29 through 30,

  525. Peter's like,

  526. no,

  527. I'll never fall away

  528. from you.

  529. And Jesus is like,

  530. oh yeah,

  531. you will.

  532. In fact,

  533. you'll fall away

  534. three times.

  535. You'll deny me

  536. three times.

  537. And that happens

  538. in verses 66 through 72.

  539. And in the midst

  540. of all this abandoning

  541. and denial of Jesus,

  542. here is Jesus saying,

  543. but I'll be raised up

  544. and I'll go before you

  545. to Galilee.

  546. There's a plan unfolding here.

  547. And I just want you

  548. to notice that

  549. what Jesus has said

  550. about his own death

  551. and resurrection

  552. has now come to pass.

  553. He has risen.

  554. Three times earlier

  555. in the gospel of Mark,

  556. Jesus proclaims

  557. his own death

  558. and resurrection.

  559. In chapter 8,

  560. verse 31.

  561. In chapter 9,

  562. verses 30 through 32.

  563. In chapter 10,

  564. verses 33 through 34.

  565. Jesus has been repeatedly

  566. telling his disciples

  567. that he would be handed over,

  568. that he would be killed.

  569. Then on the third day,

  570. he would be raised

  571. from the dead.

  572. And that is why

  573. Mark is very interested

  574. in you knowing

  575. what day it is.

  576. It's the third day.

  577. And Jesus

  578. is no longer

  579. in the tomb.

  580. And this angel

  581. is making a heavenly announcement.

  582. He has risen.

  583. So if you're putting it all together,

  584. in the gospel of Mark alone,

  585. Jesus prophesies

  586. of his own resurrection

  587. four times.

  588. And it comes true.

  589. And I think this is what finally

  590. blows the circuits

  591. for these three ladies.

  592. Their heart rate

  593. goes off the charts.

  594. Inside the tomb,

  595. these three women,

  596. they're hearing

  597. a heavenly explanation

  598. of why

  599. their dead

  600. Lord

  601. is not there.

  602. He has

  603. risen.

  604. And it's all

  605. according to plan.

  606. Which now brings us

  607. to the

  608. third scene

  609. in verse 8.

  610. Outside

  611. the tomb.

  612. So these women

  613. are completely overwhelmed.

  614. as I think

  615. you would be.

  616. As I know

  617. I would be.

  618. Their expectations

  619. have been

  620. totally

  621. upended.

  622. They were expecting

  623. to find

  624. a dead body

  625. and they find

  626. nobody

  627. an angel.

  628. We read here

  629. that they've been

  630. seized by

  631. trembling

  632. and astonishment

  633. which means

  634. they're literally

  635. shaking

  636. and overwhelmed.

  637. And Mark

  638. closes

  639. his gospel

  640. with these words

  641. for they

  642. were afraid.

  643. That's really

  644. interesting.

  645. The kind

  646. of language

  647. being used

  648. here

  649. describing

  650. these three

  651. women

  652. fear

  653. trembling

  654. astonishment

  655. is used

  656. throughout

  657. the Bible

  658. when people

  659. experience

  660. a God

  661. event.

  662. They either

  663. come into

  664. the presence

  665. of God

  666. or they

  667. experience

  668. one of God's

  669. messengers

  670. one of his

  671. angels.

  672. We see this

  673. with Joshua

  674. we see it

  675. take place

  676. with Isaiah

  677. and Ezekiel

  678. Daniel

  679. John the

  680. disciple

  681. who wrote

  682. the book

  683. of Revelation

  684. in Revelation 1

  685. there's this

  686. incredible vision

  687. of Jesus

  688. and John

  689. literally

  690. falls down

  691. before the

  692. risen

  693. reigning

  694. and radiant

  695. Christ

  696. as a dead

  697. man.

  698. And just to be

  699. truth in

  700. advertising

  701. just later

  702. in the book

  703. of Revelation

  704. John the

  705. disciple

  706. falls down

  707. before angels

  708. in two places

  709. chapter 19

  710. and 22

  711. and he starts

  712. to worship

  713. them

  714. and the angels

  715. is like

  716. no no no

  717. don't worship

  718. me

  719. worship God.

  720. My point

  721. though is

  722. when you

  723. come into

  724. the presence

  725. of God

  726. or one

  727. of his

  728. angels

  729. it's

  730. overwhelming.

  731. Peter

  732. when he

  733. saw Jesus

  734. transfigured

  735. do you

  736. remember

  737. he started

  738. speaking

  739. just nonsense

  740. just

  741. blabbering

  742. because he's

  743. so overwhelmed

  744. by the glory

  745. of Jesus.

  746. So these

  747. three women

  748. are so

  749. overwhelmed

  750. in the

  751. tomb

  752. their circuits

  753. are cooked

  754. their heart

  755. beats

  756. through the

  757. roof

  758. everything

  759. that they're

  760. hearing

  761. is like

  762. this

  763. can't

  764. be

  765. true

  766. but

  767. it

  768. is

  769. true

  770. he said

  771. all

  772. this

  773. and so

  774. they start

  775. like I gotta

  776. get out

  777. of here

  778. I gotta

  779. catch my

  780. breath

  781. I don't

  782. know if

  783. they're

  784. hyperventilating

  785. or not

  786. I'm not

  787. sure if

  788. they're

  789. asking

  790. for paper

  791. bags

  792. we can

  793. breathe

  794. into

  795. them

  796. and catch

  797. our

  798. breath

  799. collect

  800. our

  801. minds

  802. but they

  803. run

  804. out

  805. of the

  806. tomb

  807. the

  808. resurrection

  809. of Jesus

  810. Christ

  811. should

  812. overwhelm

  813. you

  814. not only

  815. are we

  816. talking

  817. about

  818. this

  819. defiance

  820. of a

  821. naturalistic

  822. explanation

  823. of how

  824. things

  825. happened

  826. I mean

  827. dead

  828. people are

  829. supposed to

  830. say

  831. dead

  832. what's

  833. going on

  834. here

  835. is

  836. that

  837. we're

  838. learning

  839. that

  840. Christ's

  841. death

  842. and

  843. resurrection

  844. this

  845. isn't

  846. some

  847. kind

  848. of

  849. freak

  850. accident

  851. or

  852. random

  853. event

  854. this

  855. is

  856. all

  857. according

  858. to

  859. plan

  860. God's

  861. plan

  862. God's

  863. plan

  864. to

  865. save

  866. sinners

  867. did you

  868. notice

  869. that

  870. these

  871. three

  872. women

  873. were

  874. eyewitnesses

  875. to

  876. Christ's

  877. crucifixion

  878. two of

  879. the three

  880. were

  881. eyewitnesses

  882. to

  883. the

  884. place

  885. where

  886. he

  887. was

  888. buried

  889. and

  890. all

  891. three

  892. were

  893. now

  894. eyewitnesses

  895. to the

  896. empty

  897. tomb

  898. they were

  899. the first

  900. to hear

  901. that Jesus

  902. has been

  903. raised

  904. he has

  905. risen

  906. they're

  907. the first

  908. and

  909. now

  910. they're

  911. in

  912. stunned

  913. silence

  914. coming out

  915. of the

  916. tomb

  917. speechless

  918. dumbstruck

  919. they say

  920. nothing

  921. to

  922. anyone

  923. these

  924. three

  925. women

  926. stunned

  927. silent

  928. collecting

  929. themselves

  930. outside

  931. of the

  932. tomb

  933. maybe

  934. they're

  935. doing

  936. controlled

  937. breathing

  938. they all

  939. come to

  940. the same

  941. conclusion

  942. Jesus

  943. is

  944. alive

  945. his

  946. resurrection

  947. dramatically

  948. changes

  949. everything

  950. there's

  951. no

  952. going

  953. back

  954. there's

  955. no

  956. putting

  957. Jesus

  958. back

  959. in

  960. the

  961. tomb

  962. they

  963. were

  964. silent

  965. but

  966. they

  967. certainly

  968. did

  969. not

  970. remain

  971. silent

  972. the

  973. other

  974. gospels

  975. show us

  976. that they

  977. did

  978. exactly

  979. what

  980. this

  981. angel

  982. told

  983. them

  984. to

  985. do

  986. they

  987. went

  988. and

  989. told

  990. the

  991. other

  992. disciples

  993. which

  994. makes

  995. them

  996. these

  997. three

  998. women

  999. the

  1000. first

  1001. humans

  1002. to

  1003. announce

  1004. the

  1005. good

  1006. news

  1007. that

  1008. not

  1009. only

  1010. Jesus

  1011. died

  1012. but

  1013. that

  1014. he

  1015. has

  1016. risen

  1017. from

  1018. the

  1019. dead

  1020. it's

  1021. extraordinary

  1022. three

  1023. scenes

  1024. these

  1025. three

  1026. women

  1027. approaching

  1028. the

  1029. tomb

  1030. these

  1031. three

  1032. women

  1033. inside

  1034. the

  1035. tomb

  1036. and

  1037. these

  1038. three

  1039. women

  1040. outside

  1041. the

  1042. tomb

  1043. and

  1044. they're

  1045. all

  1046. making

  1047. one

  1048. point

  1049. he

  1050. has

  1051. risen

  1052. he

  1053. has

  1054. risen

  1055. heaven's

  1056. exclamation

  1057. explanation

  1058. for the

  1059. empty

  1060. tomb

  1061. he

  1062. is

  1063. risen

  1064. Jesus

  1065. is

  1066. alive

  1067. it

  1068. changes

  1069. everything

  1070. no

  1071. going

  1072. back

  1073. we

  1074. are

  1075. all

  1076. outside

  1077. of

  1078. the

  1079. tomb

  1080. 2000

  1081. years

  1082. outside

  1083. of

  1084. the

  1085. tomb

  1086. but

  1087. if

  1088. this

  1089. is

  1090. true

  1091. that

  1092. means

  1093. Jesus

  1094. is

  1095. alive

  1096. today

  1097. how

  1098. are you

  1099. going to

  1100. make

  1101. sense

  1102. of

  1103. this

  1104. empty

  1105. tomb

  1106. maybe

  1107. you

  1108. see

  1109. the

  1110. death

  1111. and

  1112. resurrection

  1113. of

  1114. Jesus

  1115. and

  1116. you're

  1117. like

  1118. I'm

  1119. not

  1120. sure

  1121. what

  1122. to

  1123. think

  1124. about

  1125. it

  1126. well

  1127. first

  1128. of

  1129. all

  1130. you

  1131. need

  1132. to

  1133. realize

  1134. that

  1135. the

  1136. whole

  1137. Christian

  1138. faith

  1139. is

  1140. based

  1141. upon

  1142. Christ's

  1143. death

  1144. and

  1145. resurrection

  1146. as a

  1147. historic

  1148. reality

  1149. that it

  1150. actually

  1151. happened

  1152. it's not

  1153. a pipe

  1154. dream

  1155. and because

  1156. of that

  1157. this is the

  1158. claim of

  1159. it

  1160. Christ's

  1161. Jesus's

  1162. death

  1163. paid

  1164. all

  1165. of the

  1166. sin

  1167. all

  1168. of God

  1169. for all

  1170. of God's

  1171. wrath

  1172. for all

  1173. of our

  1174. sin

  1175. it's

  1176. if you're

  1177. here on

  1178. Friday

  1179. it's the

  1180. tearing

  1181. of the

  1182. curtain

  1183. from top

  1184. to bottom

  1185. he made

  1186. a way

  1187. through

  1188. his

  1189. death

  1190. into

  1191. God's

  1192. presence

  1193. and

  1194. this

  1195. fact

  1196. that

  1197. he

  1198. is

  1199. risen

  1200. means

  1201. that

  1202. he

  1203. has

  1204. conquered

  1205. both

  1206. sin

  1207. and

  1208. the

  1209. grave

  1210. there's

  1211. a song

  1212. called

  1213. crown him

  1214. with many

  1215. crowns

  1216. listen

  1217. to this

  1218. verse

  1219. crown him

  1220. the Lord

  1221. of life

  1222. who triumphed

  1223. over the

  1224. grave

  1225. and rose

  1226. victorious

  1227. in the

  1228. strife

  1229. for those

  1230. he came

  1231. to save

  1232. his

  1233. glories

  1234. now we

  1235. sing

  1236. who died

  1237. and rose

  1238. on high

  1239. who died

  1240. eternal life

  1241. to bring

  1242. and lives

  1243. that death

  1244. may die

  1245. the death

  1246. and resurrection

  1247. of Jesus

  1248. Christ

  1249. is God's

  1250. power

  1251. for sinners

  1252. to have

  1253. their sins

  1254. forgiven

  1255. and then

  1256. to overcome

  1257. the power

  1258. of sin

  1259. and have

  1260. hope

  1261. in the face

  1262. of death

  1263. it is

  1264. an extraordinary

  1265. event

  1266. so when you

  1267. believe in

  1268. Jesus

  1269. you believe

  1270. that he's

  1271. God in the

  1272. flesh

  1273. that he

  1274. died on the

  1275. cross

  1276. that he

  1277. was raised

  1278. from the

  1279. dead

  1280. what you're

  1281. saying

  1282. is

  1283. I have been

  1284. united

  1285. to Christ

  1286. in his

  1287. death

  1288. and resurrection

  1289. and so all

  1290. of his

  1291. death benefits

  1292. are applied

  1293. to me

  1294. all of

  1295. my sin

  1296. has been

  1297. paid for

  1298. by Christ

  1299. and his

  1300. resurrection

  1301. now means

  1302. I have

  1303. power to

  1304. say no

  1305. to sin

  1306. and now

  1307. because Jesus

  1308. has been

  1309. raised from

  1310. the dead

  1311. I can be

  1312. confident

  1313. that I

  1314. will be

  1315. raised from

  1316. the dead

  1317. death

  1318. doesn't have

  1319. the final

  1320. say

  1321. once you

  1322. believe that

  1323. Jesus is

  1324. God

  1325. in the

  1326. flesh

  1327. who died

  1328. and was

  1329. raised

  1330. for you

  1331. you start

  1332. thinking like

  1333. this

  1334. he was

  1335. risen then

  1336. he's alive

  1337. today

  1338. it changes

  1339. everything

  1340. now

  1341. there's no

  1342. going back

  1343. we live

  1344. for Christ

  1345. that's

  1346. that's

  1347. the response

  1348. this is

  1349. this is

  1350. so amazing

  1351. so how

  1352. are you

  1353. making sense

  1354. of the

  1355. empty tomb

  1356. maybe you

  1357. came in

  1358. thinking dead

  1359. people stay

  1360. dead

  1361. if

  1362. if Jesus

  1363. was raised

  1364. from the

  1365. dead

  1366. you're

  1367. thinking

  1368. then

  1369. well that

  1370. defies

  1371. a naturalistic

  1372. explanation

  1373. doesn't really

  1374. make sense

  1375. and you

  1376. are right

  1377. the resurrection

  1378. cannot be

  1379. explained

  1380. naturalistically

  1381. because it

  1382. is supernatural

  1383. that's the

  1384. Christian

  1385. claim

  1386. he has

  1387. risen

  1388. maybe you

  1389. came into

  1390. the room

  1391. thinking

  1392. I don't

  1393. I don't

  1394. want to

  1395. change

  1396. I've

  1397. heard this

  1398. old old

  1399. story many

  1400. a time

  1401. Jesus died

  1402. and was

  1403. raised

  1404. I think

  1405. it's true

  1406. but you

  1407. know

  1408. I don't

  1409. want to

  1410. submit my

  1411. life to

  1412. him

  1413. I just

  1414. want to

  1415. keep on

  1416. living for

  1417. what I'm

  1418. living for

  1419. do you

  1420. realize

  1421. what you're

  1422. choosing

  1423. you're

  1424. choosing

  1425. temporary

  1426. empty

  1427. pleasures

  1428. distractions

  1429. disobedience

  1430. over the

  1431. eternal joy

  1432. of having

  1433. a relationship

  1434. with the

  1435. living God

  1436. that's what

  1437. you're choosing

  1438. one of the

  1439. things that

  1440. people don't

  1441. hear from

  1442. Christians

  1443. is the

  1444. joy of

  1445. being a

  1446. follower

  1447. of Jesus

  1448. I would

  1449. never go

  1450. back to

  1451. what I was

  1452. before

  1453. never

  1454. never

  1455. now I

  1456. experience the

  1457. joy

  1458. daily

  1459. of knowing

  1460. my Lord

  1461. and knowing

  1462. he knows

  1463. me

  1464. if you

  1465. are choosing

  1466. sin

  1467. over

  1468. Christ

  1469. beware

  1470. you're

  1471. actually

  1472. choosing

  1473. God's

  1474. wrath

  1475. and it's

  1476. all because

  1477. you don't

  1478. want to

  1479. give up

  1480. your sin

  1481. under this

  1482. false

  1483. pretense

  1484. that your

  1485. sin is

  1486. better than

  1487. following

  1488. Jesus

  1489. it's not

  1490. maybe you're

  1491. in the

  1492. room and

  1493. there was a

  1494. moment where

  1495. you professed

  1496. faith in

  1497. Jesus Christ

  1498. and you

  1499. started

  1500. following

  1501. him

  1502. but you're

  1503. just

  1504. miserable

  1505. now

  1506. and you're

  1507. miserable

  1508. because you've

  1509. been hiding

  1510. out

  1511. you've been

  1512. hiding because

  1513. of either

  1514. sin in your

  1515. life or you've

  1516. been deeply

  1517. hurt by other

  1518. Christians

  1519. so you've been

  1520. avoiding other

  1521. Christians

  1522. you might even

  1523. be bored with

  1524. Jesus

  1525. well I just

  1526. want to remind

  1527. you

  1528. that if you

  1529. genuinely believed

  1530. in Jesus

  1531. that means

  1532. you've been

  1533. united to

  1534. Christ in

  1535. his death

  1536. and resurrection

  1537. he has

  1538. risen

  1539. and because

  1540. he has

  1541. risen

  1542. it means

  1543. that these

  1544. things that

  1545. you've allowed

  1546. into your

  1547. life or

  1548. these things

  1549. that have

  1550. deeply wounded

  1551. you

  1552. they are

  1553. they can be

  1554. overcome by

  1555. the power of

  1556. the resurrection

  1557. by the power

  1558. of God's

  1559. grace

  1560. sin does

  1561. not need to

  1562. have a hold

  1563. on you

  1564. Christian

  1565. you can

  1566. experience

  1567. joy

  1568. and I call

  1569. it the joy

  1570. of integrity

  1571. the joy of

  1572. integrity is

  1573. this

  1574. when your

  1575. public

  1576. profession

  1577. of faith

  1578. in Jesus

  1579. overlaps

  1580. fully

  1581. with your

  1582. private life

  1583. when there

  1584. is that

  1585. kind of

  1586. overlap

  1587. there is

  1588. integrity

  1589. unity

  1590. and joy

  1591. but when

  1592. there is

  1593. a gap

  1594. between

  1595. one's

  1596. profession

  1597. and one's

  1598. practice

  1599. it is

  1600. disintegrity

  1601. disintegrated

  1602. and that

  1603. is a very

  1604. difficult place

  1605. to live

  1606. it makes

  1607. Christians

  1608. miserable

  1609. he has

  1610. risen

  1611. turn your

  1612. heart back

  1613. to the

  1614. Savior

  1615. and if

  1616. you've been

  1617. running hard

  1618. for Jesus

  1619. you've been

  1620. sacrificing

  1621. you've been

  1622. suffering

  1623. he is

  1624. risen

  1625. your labor

  1626. is not in

  1627. vain

  1628. press on

  1629. he is risen

  1630. he is alive

  1631. it changes

  1632. everything

  1633. there's no

  1634. going back

  1635. live

  1636. for

  1637. him

  1638. in closing

  1639. I just

  1640. want to help

  1641. you think

  1642. about something

  1643. all of

  1644. Christianity

  1645. rises

  1646. or falls

  1647. on the

  1648. historic

  1649. bodily

  1650. resurrection

  1651. of Jesus

  1652. Christ

  1653. I mean

  1654. that's the

  1655. point of

  1656. Mark 16

  1657. 1-6

  1658. he has

  1659. risen

  1660. if Jesus

  1661. was not

  1662. raised

  1663. he's dead

  1664. his own

  1665. words

  1666. proved

  1667. false

  1668. his death

  1669. accomplished

  1670. nothing

  1671. no saving

  1672. benefits

  1673. his promise

  1674. of eternal

  1675. life is

  1676. actually void

  1677. now

  1678. he was a

  1679. false

  1680. savior

  1681. and if

  1682. that's the

  1683. case

  1684. I'll be

  1685. first in

  1686. line to

  1687. say

  1688. Christianity

  1689. is a

  1690. waste

  1691. of time

  1692. kick it

  1693. to the

  1694. curb

  1695. but if

  1696. Jesus

  1697. was raised

  1698. from the

  1699. dead

  1700. he's

  1701. alive

  1702. his

  1703. words

  1704. proved

  1705. true

  1706. his

  1707. death

  1708. really

  1709. paid

  1710. for our

  1711. sins

  1712. his

  1713. resurrection

  1714. is the

  1715. hope

  1716. of our

  1717. resurrection

  1718. he's

  1719. the one

  1720. true

  1721. savior

  1722. of the

  1723. world

  1724. and that

  1725. means

  1726. Jesus

  1727. is worth

  1728. your

  1729. life

  1730. today

  1731. on this

  1732. Easter

  1733. Sunday

  1734. I want

  1735. to compel

  1736. you to

  1737. make a

  1738. decision

  1739. to choose

  1740. to

  1741. decide

  1742. make a

  1743. decision

  1744. and live

  1745. in light

  1746. of it

  1747. with God's

  1748. help

  1749. either

  1750. Jesus

  1751. was raised

  1752. from the

  1753. dead

  1754. or he

  1755. was

  1756. not

  1757. choose

  1758. give

  1759. yourself

  1760. to it

  1761. he's

  1762. risen

  1763. he's

  1764. alive

  1765. it

  1766. changes

  1767. everything

  1768. there's

  1769. no

  1770. going

  1771. back

  1772. so

  1773. we

  1774. live

  1775. for

  1776. Jesus

  1777. in the

  1778. joy

  1779. of the

  1780. resurrection

  1781. will you

  1782. pray

  1783. with me

  1784. Lord

  1785. Jesus

  1786. thank you

  1787. so much

  1788. for not

  1789. only dying

  1790. for our

  1791. sins

  1792. but

  1793. being

  1794. laid

  1795. in the

  1796. grave

  1797. and being

  1798. raised

  1799. from the

  1800. dead

  1801. Lord

  1802. Jesus

  1803. we

  1804. acknowledge

  1805. that you

  1806. are currently

  1807. seated at the

  1808. right hand

  1809. of God

  1810. on high

  1811. that you

  1812. welcome us

  1813. to your

  1814. throne

  1815. to give us

  1816. grace

  1817. in time

  1818. of need

  1819. we

  1820. acknowledge

  1821. that you

  1822. are

  1823. interceding

  1824. right now

  1825. for all

  1826. of us

  1827. who believe

  1828. in you

  1829. that you're

  1830. building

  1831. your church

  1832. among

  1833. the nations

  1834. that you

  1835. are receiving

  1836. glory

  1837. and honor

  1838. and praise

  1839. and majesty

  1840. from all

  1841. of the

  1842. heavenly hosts

  1843. surrounding

  1844. the throne

  1845. you are

  1846. altogether

  1847. glorious

  1848. thank you

  1849. Lord

  1850. Jesus

  1851. and we

  1852. rest

  1853. in knowing

  1854. that

  1855. not only

  1856. are you

  1857. alive

  1858. but you're

  1859. one day

  1860. closer to

  1861. returning

  1862. it's your name

  1863. we pray

  1864. amen

  1865. a

  1866. ending

  1867. a

  1868. ending

  1869. a

  1870. Thank you.
